Barbaro Updates: 133

updates are now here.

Update 1041: No update this evening. I was out for dinner when I usually get an update. I did want to mention that Ramon Dominguez, who rode five winners from five rides on monday actually extended it to a seven race win streak early on tuesday. That was his record for consecutive winning rides, so congratulations to Ramon.

Update 1040: I caught up with Kathy Anderson this morning, who visited Barbaro yesterday. She also gave an upbeat assessment. She was present when they were changing his bandages (on his right hind) and thought Barbaro looked good. She also noted Barbaro has been moved to a new stall, a little larger, which he seems to appreciate. Michael also told me this morning that Barbaro did go out yesterday.

Update 1039: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). I saw Michael Matz on my second set jogging Rocky. In fact, when I came on the track, Michael said he hadn't heard yet. But as I completed my first turn, he was able to relay the positive news. I am now jogging my second mile on Rocky and watching Graham Motion's horses gallop by. It's a foggy, soupy day at Fair Hill.
updated wednesday 6:55am

Update 1038: Hard Spun won his second race at Delaware: Hard Spun's victories get colt some attention. This will be his last start at Delaware, the meet is all but over. I had neglected to mention that Kentucky Derby favourite Sweetnorthernsaint also ran at Delaware a few days ago: Sweetnorthernsaint glides and again the field was short. I am sure Steve Klesaris did not expect to have to face the Derby favourite with Master of Disaster. Final piece of racing news, Brother Derek may try the turf, I assume they know who may be Showing Up for that race!

Hopefully the Barbaro update will be before 9 am again.
Keep calling.

Good Wednesday morning Alex, Bobby and fellow fans

I hope the weather in the Northeast is good today so that Bobby can get out and graze.

I'm leaving messages already for the Senators and when I get off work I call again and talk to the aides. In between I usually send an email.

Have a great day all!

Good Morning #1 Fan Janice, Alex and Everyone,

It's 55 here on Long Island, weather looks promising, so I think our Barbaro will have a good day outside..

I'm making my calls, but I'm a slouch compared to you Janice!

Just so happy with the NBC report yesterday. B is really full steam ahead on his way to full recovery and a normal horsie life..

Have a great day!

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans! (Morning Janice & Jo & other morning people!)

As reported earlier, yes, we picked up another co-sponsor yesterday - Mikulski of Maryland. Yay!!!

A gray day in central Maine, but it promises to brighten with some sun. I hope and pray that the weather clears enough for our favorite to go graze this afternoon. Such a good report from NBC yesterday - he's able to put weight on that leg even without the brace! To paraphrase Charlote's Web - Some horse!!!

Off to get ready for work.

Christine,

Always glad to say "Hi" to a member of the morning shift. Thanks for the weather report - glad to know big "B" will get to graze. I'm really concerned with the prospect of him being confined so much over the winter. He's a race horse and I can't imagine him having to deal with the boredom of remaining in an indoor stall with no sunshine or grass to graze on. His improvement and weight gain was dramatic when he was allowed to graze.

Hello Marg

Thanks for that information - I didn't know that another Senator signed on. I guess that makes 33.

If a politician or Associate were to read the article and see how many are for the Bill it may give them the extra push. It's really easy to vote, you just click on the right side and that's it. Please note they have the old Bill number.

What it will do, I don't know, but it also gives you an opportunity to leave your comment.

We kept asking for publicity and this is one opportunity.

No you are not the only one. I feel the same way.

I was really relieved at the post last night, I think it was from ShelleyA, that they will be re-convening after Thanksgiving. I feel like it gives us a better chance of having it slip in one day before the end of the year.

My biggest worry is that Frist will just ignore it and it will never get voted on.

Good morning Barbara and Barbara Nation!

Today is hump day, so we hump our fingers dialing numbers and get this bill passed.

Thank you Lord for this day, and your blessings you have given Barbaro and all of us..Please hear the cries of our other heroes, the other horses who are in pain, or have lost their lives in an unforgiven way. God Bless Them.

Food for Thought: I noticed a coach got in a fight at a pee wee game..Our horses, greyhounds or any other animal that is engaged in sports do nothing but give their whole hearts in the game, and ask nothing back but tender loving care..

I still think one way to provide retirement ranches for these magnificent animals is a percentage is given from all sports to provide a long-lasting home and care.

May each of you have a good day, may it be very fruitful and rewarding...

Fan of Barbaro.

Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

ACN - that brings the sunshine out on even the cloudiest day. Barbaro, here's hoping the sun comes out in Chester County today...you need to get outside even for a few minutes...everybody needs fresh air. Shine on you crazy diamond.

LITF, Pine Island, Gallant Secret, Ruffain, Desert Orchid and the animal angels...love you always, my Long Time Suns.

Have e-mailed for today - will follow up later this afternoon and will prep for my nightly vigil.

Martita, your posts make me cry all over again (and there are times when I feel I have no more tears left in me - and then I read something else that brings them to the surface all over again. But if we didn't love, we wouldn't cry.).

Prayers to all those who are sick, sad, lonely...or who have animal companions who are in need of help...or those who have no voice...

It's all about the animals...and compassion...

and Love.

Socorro, thanks, I was curious about the mechanics behind the poll- sorry I spelled your name wrong. You're right, we do still want exposure.

The one comment that this was a fake bill hiding the real (and undesirable amendment filled one) was a little worrisome.

#### Anna in TX - I'm sure that everyone on this site, posters, lurkers, etc... are all on pins and needles. What a long, hard slog it seems to be. You know, were it not for this site, after hearing that the bill had passed the house I would have thought that was the end of the slaughterhouses. I have learned so much on this site!

Posted by: Anita MA at November 15, 2006 1:33 PM

Cora,

Avi's owner is getting her act together to move him to a new place - haven't talked to her recently because she's had family visiting. But he had his first chiropractic session last week and the results were nothing less than miraculous. The Chiropractor verified many of my insights and Avi's movements improved literally in front of everybody's eyes (and not to be too egotistical, but I knew how he would respond to simply feeling better...) Will keep you posted. So many of you have given such amazing support over the last few weeks. Thank you all again from the deepest parts of my heart.

Since I'm doing nightly vigils for the next couple of weeks, if anybody wants Reiki sent to them nightly, please e-mail me at lyn.gilbert@gmail.com and I'll add you to the list. Barbaro's recovery and S1915 head the list, but there is room for everybody.

Mary S, I love reading all your prayers. Please keep posting them for they inspire my own prayers many times over.

Do all of you know how incredible you are???? The last few weeks have literally been a trial by fire and yet we can still get up every day to keep pushing the Senators to get S. 1915 scheduled for a vote. We can do this...we have the momentum.

Healing, Love, Peace,

Please know that you're not alone in your thinking. I lose sleep over it. The despair I feel at the possibility of it not passing is overwhelming.

To all FsOB,

I think what we're lacking to get this job (S.1915) done is LOBBYISTS. I'm serious. At a neighborhood watch meeting last night we had a State Lobbyist as a guest speaker. Wow - did we learn about the hidden side of politics and politicians. I'm certain that our opposition has Lobbyists working hard on their behalf. Unfortunately, I think politicians are more inclined to favor them than the ordinary voter. They think the average citizen has a short memory and won't remember bills that don't pass when the next election comes. So now the challenge - how can we convince them otherwise?

#### Anna in TX - You are so right in asking about WashingtonWatch. On a newscast not too long ago, I read about how some organizations which are against a certain project/bill set themselves up on the web with a misleading name, requesting signatures. For instance, a pro-oil organization would set up a website called, say, "ProjectGreen", with blurbs about energy conservation, etc... and request signatures. So it pays to be careful about what one signs.

Slightly off topic, but about horses:

Rosemary is planning on closing the "window of opportunity" for sponsoring the Missouri horses for Christmas by the day after Thanksgiving. Many horses still only have one sponsor. Currently, 23 states are represented. This is being done in honor of NBC and their work.

If you are considering sponsoring, please remember that time is running out.

FANS OF BARBARO - WANTED TO POST THIS MESSAGE FROM SHELLEY A.! WE CAN DO THIS!!!

NEWS REGARDING NEXT PHASE OF ANTI SLAUGHTER CAMPAIGN

Moving forward, we have been asked to take another approach now that the elections are over and the senate has reconvened. (REMEMBER… the outcome of the elections doesn’t affect our strategy).

You’ve all done a great job focusing on the “Big Seven” and the committee members. It is now the time to enter the next phase of our campaign to end horse slaughter. We will no longer be focusing on targeted senators with the exception of Senator Frist.

Starting from this point on, it is strongly suggested that EVERYONE call their OWN senators: we’ve been told they now need to hear from their own constituents.

It is important to know if your senator is a cosponsor BEFORE calling so that you know what to say and show that you are informed.

Make your message short, firm and polite.
If your senators have already cosponsored, thank them and urge them to press to pass the bill immediately, definitely before the end of the year.

If they have not, please urge them to cosponsor and support S1915

This is the current list of sponsor/co-sponsors
SPONSOR: Senator John Ensign (NV) 10/25/2005
COSPONSORS(28), ALPHABETICAL:
Sen Bayh, Evan [IN] - 12/12/2005
Sen Boxer, Barbara [CA] - 3/8/2006
Sen Byrd, Robert C. [WV] - 10/25/2005
Sen Cantwell, Maria [WA] - 6/14/2006
Sen Carper, Thomas R. [DE] - 9/26/2006
Sen Collins, Susan M. [ME] - 7/26/2006
Sen DeMint, Jim [SC] - 10/25/2005
Sen Dodd, Christopher J. [CT] - 1/25/2006
Sen Feinstein, Dianne [CA] - 2/9/2006
Sen Graham, Lindsey [SC] - 3/29/2006
Sen Inouye, Daniel K. [HI] - 10/25/2005
Sen Kennedy, Edward M. [MA] - 9/25/2006
Sen Kerry, John F. [MA] - 1/25/2006
Sen Landrieu, Mary L. [LA] - 10/25/2005
Sen Lautenberg, Frank R. [NJ] - 7/12/2006
Sen Levin, Carl [MI] - 10/25/2005
Sen Lieberman, Joseph I. [CT] - 10/25/2005
Sen Lott, Trent [MS] - 10/25/2005
Sen Martinez, Mel [FL] - 9/28/2006
Sen McCain, John [AZ] - 9/20/2006
Sen Menendez, Robert [NJ] - 1/25/2006
Sen Nelson, Bill [FL] - 9/20/2006
Sen Reed, Jack [RI] - 9/6/2006
Sen Schumer, Charles E. [NY] - 9/14/2006
Sen Snowe, Olympia J. [ME] - 3/8/2006
Sen Specter, Arlen [PA] - 10/25/2005
Sen Stabenow, Debbie [MI] - 1/25/2006
Sen Stevens, Ted [AK] - 11/1/2005
(the dates indicate when they cosponsored)

The only exception is Senator Frist. As Majority Leader he should hear from EVERYONE to get this put on the calendar. Majority Leader # 202-224-3135

Also, this would be the perfect time to get out your address books and contact everyone you know in every state….family, friends, work related contacts, etc. While this group covers a large geographic area, there are many states not represented. Find people in those states and ask them to call their senators.

You guys have done a GREAT job on the previous phase…..now, as requested, let’s go get them as we move into the next stage of our operation to pass S1915 this year!

Let’s use National Call In Day as the beginning of the next phase in getting S1915 passed with THIS Congress.

FsOB:
First I'm reposting Alex's update 1027:
Mrs. Jackson just called to thank everyone for their support today, and over the next few days, as we continue our efforts re: the anti horse-slaughter bill. [Mon 13/11/06]
Next I'm reposting excerpts from ShelleyA's yesterday...pls note where it says "this can be slipped in any time..."
Special note to Janice, and everybody concerned with whether or not this is going happen...Don't forget: This fight (or race) has been going on for nine long years. This is the homestretch. There is plenty of money and power behind it, just as there is plenty of money and power behind the opposition. Keep in mind: We are watching politics at work, and participating as "civilians", but we are not professional politicians and as such do not (and will never!) know the ins and outs of cutting a deal in the senate. What we do know, though, is that by calling our senators, we are providing external corroboration to the proponents of S1915 that their constituents care about this issue -- thank you Barbaro -- which at this point is an incredibly valuable resource -- and which is why they have asked us to do what they've asked us to do.

REPOST SHELLEY A

Sounds like you all had a very successful National Call In Day! But for us, this has got to be "National Call In Week"!!

However, we have been told that S1915 can be slipped in at anytime. It is one of those things that may not even be announced in advance. That's why it's crucial that we stay on those phones and keep the momentum going!! Get those phones ringing in the morning so they know of the support even before they go to chambers in the afternoon

It should be the same program.....call your own senators and Senator Frist. Keep asking them to get it to the floor THIS SESSION.

What a great job all the FOB have been doing!!!

HARD AT WORK

Laurie H. in Mn.

In case you missed my earlier post: You owe me minutes. I called and called all day. Used your "voice" when I called back. One aide laughed and asked what I was doing. I said I was cheating. I told him I called in earlier in support of S. 1915 and I wanted another message left but wasn't sure if he'd take more than one from a person. He said my girl imitation was so horrible he would include my message. Anyway, I'm on the Mn. and Iowa border. It is so cold I can only say: "I want my mommy!" Oh well! Only there for six days and then Az. Take care!

Posted by: Mary Dubbink at November 15, 2006 2:45 PM

#### Mary Dubbink - Thanks for the link. I had to do a search on the site (on "slaughterhouse" to get to the article). It did answer a question I had in the back of my mind, like "I didn't know Mexicans eat horsemeat, I wonder if they sell it as beef...")

Here are interesting excerpts:

"Mexico does not have a huge appetite for horsemeat like some parts of Europe, but we're told some markets sell the meat masquerading it as beef. "

"The slaughter industry always is telling everyone these horses are old and sick, and this is a humane alternative for them. They fail to point out even government studies show that 90 percent of these horses are sound, good horses," Heyde said.

At least one of the American horses KENS saw in Mexico was clearly nearing the end of a hard life, but most appeared young and healthy. One was pregnant.

Supporters of a law prevent to prevent the slaughter of horses at home and across the border argue the practice is about profit, not humanely ending a horse's life.

The bill to ban horse slaughter was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives a few months ago. The Senate may vote on the bill before the end of the year.

For more on efforts to support the ban, visit www.saplonline.org/Alerts/102506.htm.

Anita, I know everyone is pushing really hard. What I didn't realize was how it was affecting my normal routine- like eating dinner. I'm not lately, and when I log on to read, I notice that my stomach knots up with worry.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at November 15, 2006 2:56 PM

ACN for Bobby!!! Just what I needed to hear!
Alex...thanks for the articles.

Leslie...thanks for the answer to my question about Gallant Secret. I think this must have happened just before I found TWR...I would definately have remembered. I know that Gallant Secret was a very special girl and I often look at her pictures, but now I know why she meant so much to everybody here. How tragic.

I wonder why they didn't use the recovery pool for her and yet it's routine for Bobby. I thought New Bolton used it for all horses coming out of anaesthetic because it's so much safer. That's a mystery. If anyone can link me to 'Barbaro's Dream' I would be grateful.

Shelley...thanks for search tip. I understand how it feels now to be emotionally close to a horse and then lose them. I want to see the horses I've come to know and love run, but there's always that fear that it could happen to them. I've been distraught over Dessie, but if only they could all have his life...that would a perfect world.

Lou Ann...Dessie was something else, wasn't he? The tributes just go on and on and I'm reading every one of them. I'm glad you sent a card to Fondmort! Hopefully we'll have some more good news about him today. My fingers and toes are crossed for his full recovery.

Back to work on this still very murky day!

I'm on a roll again:

Phil Rogers DID ask me to keep him updated, right?? Well, here's what I'm sending him today:

Mr. Rogers:

In the last two days, S. 1915 has gained five more co-sponsors. They are: Senators Clinton, Akaka, Biden, Murray and Mikulski. There are now 33 co-sponsors adding their names to that of Senator Ensign, the original sponsor. This morning I was informed that Senators DeMint and Lautenberg have added their names to the letter Senator Landrieu has sent regarding this bill.

Over half the Senate is co-sponsoring S.1915. It is vital that Senator Frist introduce a motion to proceed on this bill, without amendments. As you know, he is the key person with regards to getting it onto the floor for a vote this year.

American people have spoken and over half the Senate is listening. Unfortunately, our own two senators are still sending the same canned responses as always. Senator Durbin makes no commitment at all. In speaking with one of Senator Obama's aides, I was told that "Senator Obama will probably sign it if it comes up for a vote this year". Unfortunately, as of today, neither of them has shown that they are listening to their constituents. Neither has stepped forward to sponsor S. 1915, and neither has signed Senator Landrieu's letter.

It is my wish that this bill passes this year. What a wonderful Christmas present that would be, not only to the American public, but to our American horses as well.

Thank you,

Cora M. Adelizzi

I haven't hit the send yet, just in case anyone thinks of something valuable to add.

Posted by: Cora-IL at November 15, 2006 3:00 PM

#### Anna in TX - I'm so sorry to hear about the effects to your eating dinner, and how your stomach knots up when you read about this. My own reaction is a welling up of tears and deep sorrow. But just think about all the people working so hard for the ban, that has to lift your spirits. There is so much cruelty in this world, wouldn't it be wonderful if the ban passed this year...

Hi All

This is going GREAT. Five new co-sponsors in the last few days!! And more signatures on Senator Landrieu's letter!! We are seeing signs of progress.

Be aware, the senate is different than the house and that's why our assignment was altered slightly......which seems to be working in our favor.

There are professional lobbyists that have been working on this for years. They need our calls.
So please keep calling your senators, calling Senator Frist and expanding your network of people to make these calls.

As we have been told, S1915 can be slipped in at anytime. It is one of those things that may not even be announced in advance. That's why it's crucial that we stay on those phones and keep the momentum going!! Get those phones ringing in the morning so they know of the support even before they go to chambers in the afternoon

#####
There's a lot be said for "visulization." Some may think this sounds a little over the top. But I've read a lot about this practice. So along with contacting our senators and praying to God and the Angels, try visulizing that you are hearing the news that S.1915 has passed. Really focus on it. If there's enough energy in this direction, well, we'll see won't we? I've been visualizing Barbaro grazing back home with Mom and Dad Jackson.

Barbaro is miraculous and has inspired us so much in so many ways and I think we are all caught up in miracles right now. It's awesome.

Posted by: Pam Mross at November 15, 2006 3:18 PM

ACN, great, great, great! I'm not able to bring up a new NBC update on their website--they still list the Nov. 6 update as the latest. Wonder how all of you got a later one yesterday? My Ohio senators still are not listed as co-sponsors of S1915. I'll call them today, and Frist. Sen. DeWine just got heavily defeated, so maybe he won't try; but I will!

Anna in TX: Also sorry about your dinner probs. This is so difficult to understand . . . unless you factor in the greed issue. It seems like such a no-brainer, doesn't it?

Horses are saved. Breeders become more responsible. Horse owners, and prospective owners, look ahead and plan, rather than just losing interest and taking an easy way out.

The SHs are gov. subsidized. Couldn't those few employees be hired to work with retired horses using monies the gov. has perviously sent to the SHs? Everybody wins.

Can you imagine the support those SHs would receive if they were transformed into retirement villages? And, the positive effect such work would have on the previous employees?

Maybe, I'm just a dreamer, but I BELIEVE IN SOLUTIONS!

Keep up the calls, everyone! We seem to be being heard!

IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN A MIRACLE TODAY, YOU AIN'T PAYIN' ATTENTION!!!

Welcome back to the site.. Reading the posts, I know you are soothing to many of the FOB's.

I would like to add to your quote last night and this morning (post time 1:08) from Romans 8:38-39. This would help "me" with my spiritual concerns:

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God,
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I just read that Hard Spun might run on Dec 2 in a stakes race at Laurel Park, or he will wait until the newly rescheduled Pa Nursery Stakes sometime in mid December. SHELLY, is Mr Boxcar going to possibly be running in it still? Rick Porter said that the race at Delta Downs that they were possibly going to run him in is too much of a jump for him. I am not sure which race that was, but It looks like he may go to Laurel or stay in where he is for now.

Good Morning all FOB's and to the WONDERHORSE himself (Barbaro that is!)Hello to you too ALEX! When will we see a photo of Chappy girl? :-)

Just sharing an excerpt from Joe at TB Friends daily blog:

"A cute dark bay filly came off the slaughter truck yesterday, and there is old mud caked in her mane. I tell the driver Bobby he should put a bell on his truck. Like the ice cream man. He could drive around the county with his bell clanging, and ranchers would race out of their houses to save a horse. Bobby thinks I am looney. He sees fields of horses on my ranch, and calls me the crazy man. And then he gets on Interstate 5 for the two and a half day trip to Texas. 14 horses on the slaughter truck yesterday. As Bobby pulls away the little filly rears and kicks in the driveway. A gleam in her eyes. Her weight is decent, and her feet are in good shape. She is probably a thoroughbred. I name her Honey Bunch, after my favorite cereal. She is wormed and vaccinated. Given a tub of sweet feed. Out to the fields goes Honey Bunch, and Cathy will clean her mane this weekend. Cathy does the makeovers. A whole new look for Honey Bunch..."

FOB's and Joe's blog are my inspiration . . .

Excellent..

Could you modify the line that says "over half the senate is co-sponsoring" and the line that says "American people have spoken and over half the senate is listening"

If we have 34 co-sponsors (which by the way is a tremendous amount of support for a senate bill!)
out of 100 senators, shouldn't that number be closer to one-third or 30%...?

[Of course at this rate with the enthusiasm of FsOB by next week we could well have 50%!!]

Cheers,

######
Friends of Barbaro,

My posts have been few and far between for the past few weeks as my grandmother has been suffering with congestive heart failure.

She passed away yesterday. She was 94 years old and she was my very best friend in the world. When I was growing up she would take me to her sister's farm and she taught me to love and care for horses as well as ride them. Such peaceful, long, picturesque rides we took together. Now the memories are all I have and I will cherish every one of them.

If I know my gram, she's caring for and loving all of the horses in heaven. They are lucky to have her, I know I was.

I am also afraid that Sen Frist will just ignore the bill. When I call his office, I am telling them there are 5 more cosponsors for a total of 33 and please not to ignore our bipartisan request to put the bill on the calendar. ai'm trying anything to get his attention!!

Barbaro...

So you continue to know. God is watching over you as you heal. He is holding you and all your caregivers in his arms. He NEVER lets us go. Keep resting my pal.

You are so LOVED! Scratches on your ears, kisses on your face, and hugs on your neck.

You won't ever understand it, but your life has changed so many. Of course that is God trying to get his message to US. God wanted us to have the EDEN life.

### The sheriff of Maricopa County (greater Phoenix area) is a huge supporter of animal rights and severely prosecutes neglect/abuse cases. I have sent an email and will follow up with a fax and call. My friend bought a beautiful mustang at a mustang/burro adoption - and beautiful Bella - had experienced extensive training at a prison facility in Canon City, Colorado. It is my understanding that many prisons feature programs for re-training inmates to work with horses and animals - for future adoption. I am thinking that perhaps some of our FOB's could do some checking ....... and make new connections for perhaps additional PR - and for more folk to call into the senators .......
These are wonderful programs for animals and inmates alike ...... and a place and opportunity for horses to go to live and prosper.

Sherry,

Animal Planet used to have a program that showed inmates training dogs for adoption. It is a great program and only "deserving" inmates get the dogs. In all cases the program brought peace and calm and kindness to the inmate.

Hi Alex. Sorry it is foggy and soupy. It was 12 degrees here this AM.

Posted by: Margie at November 15, 2006 4:09 PM

Dear Socorro and all FOBs:
I'm glad you enjoyed the story. I've invested myself fully into this project. Barbaro changed my life. I did not know about horse slaughtering before coming to TWR. Sometimes it gets very tough, the sad stories such as the Missouri horses. I can't believe we can do this in what is supposed to be the most civilized nation on earth. As a species I believe it is our responsibility to care for this planet. And a huge component in that care is to nurture and protect all life, not kill it! I will fight to no end to stop this industry. The next step in our moral progression, both as a species and as a nation, is when the slaughterhouses are shut down. I also find I need my sense of humor to negate the sadness of the journey we are on. I am a male, but I cry and I cry hard. And often, as I see the horrors these innocent animals suffer from the dark side of the human heart. I use my humor to stay attached to realities. As an example, American Airlines ships, I believe, the vast majority of "horse meat" (horses ARE NOT meat)overseas. AA has a very large number of employees in Tulsa, where I visit my son for a couple months. So last week I went to their employee parking lot and put Humane Society National Call In Day flyers on every windshield. I also make presentations to small groups about hs. One individual, pro-slaughter, brought up the insane argument about too many horses around if the bill goes through. He wanted a concrete answer on what will be done with all these EXTRA horses. I took the high road. I told him that I had not thought of that angle. I said perhaps he was right and one morning we'd wake up and there'd be horses on our front yards. They'd be having races in our streets. Little ponies dreaming of growing up to be Barbaro. Hundreds of little ponies dreaming of becoming a Big Boss Horse. Visions in their heads of being on TV and biting a CBS reporter. And the problems we would have in getting our morning coffee. Starbucks would be overrun with horses ordering lattes. Most of them in the drive-up lane. And not being able to get a seat in any coffee house because you got these darn ol' horses sitting around reading their Daily Racing Forms. "Hay, did you see Invasor make that move? Pretty good, huh?" An older horse responds, "Sonny, he and any of today's kids would be swamped by Big Red!" On and on and on! And movie theatres. Thank the good lord for stadium seating. At least we can see between their ears. So I told him maybe he was right. Maybe this could turn into "Planet of the Horses!" and we'd all become slaves in a new world order where horses rule. A horse in the White House! A horse in the Kremlin! Imagine that summit meeting! Anyway, sorry for the long post. Just needed to dialogue! It's off to the phones. I will never let Barbaro, Darlin' and all our beloved horses down.
Daryl!

Posted by: Daryl Smoliak at November 15, 2006 4:09 PM

### Ro and Brady - Yes .... I see it as a "win-win" ....... the inmates learn new skills - the animals become more adoptable - and both seemingly find the love and compassion badly needed. Could be seen as great rehap for both inmates and animals -
Off to make more calls/faxes - and to expand my "circle" of connections.

Rosemarie + Sherry - I remember that show on Animal Planet, it was called Cell Dogs. It was a really great show. Some of the inmates had never had animal companions before. They really became attached to their trainees. They had one with male inmates and another with female inmates. I wonder why they have not done more? It really seemed to benefit all involved.

Sherry,
Thanks for that information about inmates working with animals. I have also seen a program on this work being done with all sorts of people - from people in hospitals to those in jail and think it is a great program and very healing for everyone involved. Animals are non-judgemental and accepting which can be very healing for these people and in some cases the only time in their lives they have experienced love and affection.

## Debbie B - I would think the programs are expensive to fund ..... I do know that when my friend bought his mustang, Bella .... the untrained mustangs went for $100 or so ......
but .... the 4 trained (by inmates) were involved in a regular bidding process - and she went to the highest bidder. In this case - $1200 of the $1400 went back to the prison and the rest to the BLM. Another friend recently told me that trained mustangs had gone for less than $500 at an adoption he'd gone to. I, for one, would like to see lots more tax $$$'s head in this direction .... it is so worthwhile for both inmates and animals. Here come the FOB's ....

Just being suspicious and cynical today. I am beginning to realize that there are more and more people out there raising horses specifically for meat. As if there isn't enough food to eat! But what really worries me is this drought here in the west and these people now cannot afford to feed these horses and are just sending them out to pasture to "let nature take its' course". (As was posted by someone in the DB). After S1915 passes, we need to start making sure laws are enforced.

Forgive my naivete but I have never joined a blog. This is important though. My sophmore is working on an assignment due Friday for Honors English. The assignment is to write an issue-based letter to a politician about an issue of great personal concern. My child LOVES horses, hence will be writing a letter about the anti slaughter legislation, addressed to our senator.

Here is where I need your help. With a heavy school load there is not lots of extra time to thoroughly research the House Bill and Senate Bill. We needs links to sites that are fact-based. We all share a common emotional link here. We needs facts that can quickly be crafted into a one page, 5 paragraph letter. I will check this site at 3pm EST for any links to sites about these bills. Thanks so much

Just scanning quickly but do I see that you are talking about Sheriff Joe Arpaio? That man IS the man! He loves animals. In fact, one night one of the Phoenix TV stations ran an interview with his wife. She said he told her not to tell the public about his affection for animals in that it would ruin his tough guy image. She was joking of course. In that piece it showed how he fixed up an old, I think, jail and housed lost dogs and cats. Everyday he brought inmates to care for them. Sheriff Joe, America's Sheriff. Tough on crime, tough on the bad guys, loving and caring for the innocent! It does not get any better!
LOL Daryl!
And looking forward to meeting you!
Hey, maybe we can get a few horses and walk around Arizona Mills. They have those cobblestone floors. Can you imagine the sound of hooves on that floor? And we can take our beloved equine into stores and try on hats and stuff. And wouldn't it be fun to go to the food court and have them stand in front of Paradise Cafe and stare at the carrots?

HARD AT WORK

In case you missed my earlier post: You owe me minutes. I called and called all day. Used your "voice" when I called back. One aide laughed and asked what I was doing. I said I was cheating. I told him I called in earlier in support of S. 1915 and I wanted another message left but wasn't sure if he'd take more than one from a person. He said my girl imitation was so horrible he would include my message. Anyway, I'm on the Mn. and Iowa border. It is so cold I can only say: "I want my mommy!" Oh well! Only there for six days and then Az. Take care!

Daryl, you are adorable! I know that is not usually something a man wants to hear (or read in this case) but I hope you know what I mean! LOL Thank you for all your efforts! Here's a warm hug for you! :)

Cora,
Isn't she lovely. She told me the same thing through her snorts, grunts, hisses and spitting. Grace school would not her in the least.

I just read this post on the message board. It looks important.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON SB 1915 - HORSE SLAUGHTER LEGISLATION

11/16/06 8:17 AM PST

I just talked to Kathryn O'Mara in Senator Ensign's office. Sen Ensign is a Sponsor of the bill. They are working hard to get SB 1915 attached to another bill, not to get it passed as a seperate piece of legislation. She said their best shot on getting it passed is on December's Omnibus bill. This is a bill that is done at the end of the year that encompasses the last minute legislation from many different areas, education, energy, etc. The chicken soup of legislation. She said the best thing to do is to continue to call your Senators, and Senator Frist & Senator McConnell asking them -- not to get SB 1915 on the calender -- but to Co-Sponsor and if they're not willing to do that -- to SUPPORT SB 1915 TO PASS THIS SESSION IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE.

The calls are definately making a difference! Good job guys, I call just about everyday and they definately make note of whose calling about what. Keep up the good work!

A good tip on calling (i used to be a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. for 10 years) is to ask for the person that handles Agriculture for the Senator....and then to really politely talk to them....acknowledge what they have done and to push the above message. If you get a VM, make sure to say Support Horse Slaughter Legislation in your first breath as they will quickly listen to calls and erase.

Pass on the word!

Thanks!

Renee

I could be wrong, but I think Katie is still young enough to not be able to speak/debate politely with someone who doesn't agree with her.

I've had looong conversations with Ellen. She's a gem. She is pro-slaughter, but we have had the most pleasant conversations. I never hang up feeling like I was just in a war of words.
