    Barbaro Updates: 134

    updates are now here.

Update 1047: Wendy's report from her visit to Fair Hill this morning. Make sure to check the photos.

Update 1046: I just spoke to Peter who had spoken to Michael who visited Barbaro earlier this afternoon. Peter said Barbaro remains comfortable. Peter was pretty upbeat.

Update 1045: When I was at Graham Motion's this morning Sue noted Graham was two winners shy of the 1,000 mark. Well according to Sue's News Graham has now reached 1,000 winners with two more winners today, Everyman and Lucky Bachelor. Both winners ridden by Ramon Dominguez. Congratulations to everyone at the Motion barn!

Update 1044: A quick update on the Fair Hill Breeders' Cup horses. As I was grazing Hawty Creek, Round Pond was turned out in one of Michael's paddocks. She looked very calm and happy with her head down grazing. All was peaceful ... until someone came to catch her and bring her in. Then she started performing, I am guessing she just was not yet ready to return to the barn.

I went over to Graham Motion's barn once I was done. Lisa was finishing tacking up Better Talk Now and took him out for a very light jog in the fields out back. I walked out to watch along with Sue, Graham's office manager. He was very relaxed and happy, picking grass along the way as he was walking out and back from his short exercise. Sue actually maintains a news section on Graham's site: Sue's news. The november 14 entry includes pictures of the now retired Film Maker!

Update 1043: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was coming on to the track for my second set on Chappy. He had heard from Dr. Richardson. I was the first out this morning on the track just after six am and the moisture laying on top of the sealed track reflected the moon and a bit of the sunrise which in turn provided a nice source of light. I did also see Barclay Tagg as I was coming off the track on my first set. He is pleased with both Showing Up and NoBiz as they prepare for their respective stake races next weekend. Barclay said NoBiz is scheduled to fly to Hollywood Park on Tuesday.
    updated thursday 7:15am

Update 1042: The weather will determine the timing of the Barbaro update this morning. While it does not appear to be raining this minute, it is forecast to do so. If training is not effected by the rain, the Barbaro update should be before 9 am.

Noting the weather impacting training, we are still awaiting the completion of our synthetic training track (Tapeta). It should be complete by the end of this month, but of course the weather may also impact the completion date. The surface has recently been introduced at the Godolphin training center in Dubai: Godolphin opens synthetic training track. I am really looking forward to not having to gallop on a sloppy hard dirt race track!

It is nice to see the traveling queen Ouija Board has been voted European Horse of the Year: Ouija Board Honored With Second Cartier Horse of the Year Award. She is now preparing for the Japan Cup, to run a week on sunday.

    Keep calling!

Good Morning all, greetings to you Alex .Rain, rain and more rain here in Florida over the night...now we get a short burst of cool weather, more autumn like. As we natives say, give it five minutes and the weather will change. Great to hear that the big boss horse has himself some new digs. Just think how exciting it can be when you move into a new place, especially if it's bigger. He'll have more room to move about and get that right hind back in shape with more circulation and movement in the muscle and strengthening of the bone. I remember Dr. R. saying that bone actually can grow back stronger than before the injury. It will no doubt peak his curiosity as perhaps our boy was getting a bit bored with the same surroundings..don't we all from time to time. Lots to do today with the Senators...call, call ,call. Peace and love to all of the FOB's and may God bless the souls and comfort the spirits of those who stand in the pens and feed lots, they are all precious creatures that deserve to be saved. Oh Yes, Congratulations Ouija Board, you are the Queen!!

Posted by: Bonnie Lee at November 16, 2006 11:09 AM

I love you, Ouija Board...and from the response to you at the Breeders' Cup I'd say that lots of other Americans feel the same way!

COULD THIS BE THE DAY??? Keep those calls and faxes going...I'll be checking from work during the day.

Barbaro, you great big hunk, I hope you're enjoying your new stall and that you have all the amenities you deserve - a sunroof, cable and dsl access, a new computer with a keyboard to fit your hoofies, a shelf full of flannel jammmies and nightshirts, a window through which you can chat with Mocah...and how about a push-button, on-demand treat dispenser? Stick with me, kid, and you'll be even more spoiled! If you're missing anything, just paw the ground and Dr. Dean will make it happen! I love you more every day, and bless you for the friendships, knowledge and good works you have inspired!

Where in FL are you? I'm on the Space Coast. Do you know that some FsOB are meeting at Calder race track on the 25th. We'd love to have you join us. ALL FsOB are welcome. It hasn't been discussed much because of the urgency of S.1915.

    Good Morning everyone...

Howling wind woke us up this morning. it is just bustin out wild. really intense high wind.

Hope our boy had ACN...I have pretty much come to depend on it! Need to stay guarded, however. We still have a long way to go with that left rear.

Stay strong like the wind today, Barbaro, and know you are loved.

Good morning to all, Alex doesn't sound hopeful about the weather, so Bobby might have another day in the stall. At least it is a new and larger stall. I hope he has a different view of the area to keep him entertained.

Could it be the day ?? I can't help but speculate although I don't want to get too excited yet.

The weather here near Charlotte is wild and I'm afraid of losing power and being out of touch. Today of all days!! I'm hoping the worst is over but there is really destructive weather around. Good luck to any near here where it is coming next.

Barbaro, waiting for ACN to start my day right. I love you big guy. Bye.

Morning Barbaro! Keep on keepin' on healing..smile.

I got this email response from Debbie Stabenow's office regarding S 1915

    November 13, 2006

    Thank you . . .

. . . for contacting me regarding your support for protecting horses from slaughter for human consumption. I share your views on this matter.

I recently cosponsored an amendment that bans the use of tax dollars for inspection of horses intended to be slaughtered for human consumption. This amendment would effectively end this practice. I am pleased to share that this amendment passed the Senate and was also passed in the final version of the Agriculture Appropriations Bill that was signed by the President on November 10, 2005.

I am also a cosponsor of the Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915). As you know, this bill would give the Secretary of Agriculture broader authority to investigate situations where a horse may be slaughtered for human consumption. This bill is currently pending before the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. You can count on me to continue supporting efforts to protect the welfare of animals.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to do so again if I can be of assistance to you or your family.

    Sincerely,

    Debbie Stabenow

    United States Senator (Michigan)

INSTRUCTIONS AS PER SHELLEY A. -

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS BEFORE 9:30 a.m. CONTINUE TO ASK THEM TO COSPONSOR S.1915

Starting from this point on, it is strongly suggested that EVERYONE call their OWN senators: we’ve been told they now need to hear from their own constituents.

    SENATORS – CONTACT INFORMATION

It is important to know if your senator is a cosponsor BEFORE calling so that you know what to say and show that you are informed.

    CURRENT LIST OF COSPONSORS

Make your message short, firm and polite.
If your senators have already cosponsored, thank them and urge them to press to pass the bill immediately, definitely before the end of the year.

If they have not, please urge them to cosponsor and support S1915.

The only exception is Senator Frist. As Majority Leader he should hear from EVERYONE to get this put on the calendar.

Have done the Senate contacting so here's to some forward movement...

Designgirl, my condolences to you. If you keep your heart open, you'll feel her with you. As either you or other people on the board have said, she's grooming all the horse spirits now (and there is a long line of them waiting for her special touch.).

Lou Ann/PA, check your e-mail. Thank you for all your lovely, supportive words. Had me in tears.

    Sherry/AZ, also check your e-mail.

LITF, Gallant Secret, Pine Island, Desert Orchid, Ruffian, Secretariat, and all the animal spirits - you shine so brightly, my Long Time Suns.

Barbaro, I bet you've got your new stall decorated JUST the way you like it. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Alex, you are again captivating us with your descriptions of the sunrise at FH. Somehow, someway I'm going to see a sunrise there. I'll figure out how to get there that early. Thank you and Tim for all that you've done over the past few months. So many of us have had our eyes and hearts opened in ways we never anticipated. Never.

Gotta go...having lunch with friends today.

Good morning Barbaro...glad to hear you have a new, bigger stall. We wondered how long it took your "people" to detach and move all your cards, letters, posters and signs to your new location! Whew! And did you remember to fill out your change of address form? :-)
We have been contacting our Florida senators and thanking them for being co-sponsors of the bill. Martinez sent us a nice e-mail thanking us for our "kind works of support...It is an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Florida in the United States Senate. I appreciate your encouragement and look forward to continuing my work on issues of importance to Florida and the nation.".
Here's to having good news on s1915 very soon.

Here's hoping our bill passes today.

Just out of curiosity, with regards to calling before 9:30, would I be correct in assuming 9:30 eastern, as opposed to local??

    Kathy J.
Just in case we miss each other out here this morning - Thank you for keeping me informed if anything happens while I'm out today. If anything comes up that should alter our calling/letter writing instructions, would you please call and let me know that as well? I have the senators programmed into my phone so I can continue with my calls. Thanks Kathy, I'm so grateful for your friendship.

I just got this e-mail from Senator Frist.

    Dear Carol,

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for S. 1915, the Virgie S. Arden Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Iam honored to serve you as Magority Leader of the United States, and it is a privilege to respond to your concerns.

I have heard from many Americans who are concerned about the slaughter of horses for human consumption. In 2005, it is estimated that more than 90,000 horses were slaughteres for human consumption in foreign countries, primarily in Europe and Asia. Congress has been debating whether to ban such slaughter for some time. You may be interested to know that I support an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill, which was signed by the President into law, that restricts the slaughtering of horses for human consumption at federally unspected plants.

The Virgie S. Arden Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is currently being considered by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Please know that I undrstand your concerns, and I will certainly have your comments in mind should this legislation be considered by the full Senate.

Again, thank you for contacting me.

Did anyone else get this e-mail?

Roy and Gretchen Jackson sold their 3-year-old filly No Fair at the Keenland November sales....

No Fair, a three-year-old broodmare or racing prospect, brought the second-highest price of the session. David Mueller and Paula Mueller purchased the bay War Chant filly, a winner of three of seven career starts, for $240,000 from the consignment of Mill Ridge Sales, agent.

No Fair won her previous three starts prior to the sale for trainer Michael Matz and owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, owners-breeders of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Barbaro. No Fair is out of Grade 3 winner Little Sister, by Valid Appeal, a full sister to Grade 3 winner and sire Valid Expectations

    Happy Birthday Nancy in CT

Emails and first round calls are done. Senator Obama's aide said they are getting a LOT of calls. (Her emphasis, not mine)

Senator Durbin's aide must be as well. She cut me off in mid-sentence, then, in response to a comment at the end requiring an answer from her, she replied "I'll see that he gets your message" and hung up on me. Well, I never....LOLOL. Guess that means she's getting a lot of calls. (smile)

    Bobbycakes...velvet nose...beautiful steed...huggies and kissies!! Keep healing !

Keep calling! We have to stop this cruelty!!
Cruelty is any harmful action taken against another living entity that disregards its consciouusness or awareness. Cruelty exists in three distinct realms: Cruety against mankind, cruelty against animals, and finally cruelty against nature! Let's STOP Horse Slaughter...cruelty against horses by getting S1915 passed NOW!!

Please light candles for Bobby, Mike, Erin, Linda H, Felix, Lola, Kitty, Babs, OPie, the rescue horses, the unrescued horses, S 1915, and all our human and animal friends who need some extra help.

    Good Day FOB's,

Senator Feinstein from CA has a nice gal named Liz taking calls in DC. I also contacted Senator Boxer and last but not least Senator Frist.

Senator Frist's person said that they have been getting lots of calls and that "he is aware." Emphasis on the word "aware."

It's only 6:15am here so I am trying to get the calls in before 9:30am EST as recommended. Thanks Socorro!

When I called Frist's office this morning, I only got a few words out and she immediately sent me to voice mail. I just have to wonder if Frist ever knows about these voice mails. I gave my opinion on the bill and asked him to schedule the bill on the senate floor for a vote ASAP and also asked for his support on it.

Called my two senators, told the aides to have the senator to co-sponsor the bill S1915 and get it to the floor for a vote. One aide said the bad weather we had yesterday in Alabama is now in DC. She is from Mobile, told both girls we are watching the senate on TV. Ask Why is nothing getting voted on? they don't know?

Mary thank you for your prayers.

Alex thank you for your update, ACN

    Nancy happy birthday.

Good morning to all the FOB, great day to pass the bill S1915

Durbin's office must be having problems today.

In my second round calls, to a different aide just now, I thought I was going to wind up arguing with the guy. He asked for my city and zip, I gave it to him. He err'ed and hmm'd a lot. I asked if there was a problem.

He said, it's just that your phone is coming up as an outside call, I'm just trying to find out if you really live in IL. I said yes, that I am calling from a cell phone. He demanded the number. I said, "Look ,I live at Belmont and Cumberland. Belmont is parallel to Addison, which is Parallel to Irving which....I think my anger was coming through, because he cut me off and said "Okay, I believe you may I have your message"?

I have never had that kind of problem with that office before. They are generally unfriendly, but not outright rude. Pretty funny considering we're calling DC. Wouldn't ALL the calls come in as outside calls, based on that????

    Posted by: Cora-IL at November 16, 2006 2:25 PM

    Cora,

There is such a contrast between senator's aides. I called the New Mexico senators at someone's request because they were not getting many calls. When I finished my speil, she aksed for my county. I told her I was from Texas, not NM, and that I was calling all senators because it was a national issue. She said we are always glad to talk to anyone even outside their state. She was very, very pleasant. I used to live in Illinois, so I have been calling those senators also. I know what you mean about them not being very courteous. I hope it's because they are tired of hearing from us!

Big B. called me last night. The truth is, he was evicted from the smaller stall. Too many late night poker parties, cigar smoke, loud music, noisy tap dance recitals, and the nurses station was too close, and most were offended by his recent beachwear. He is ashamed of his behavior and asks for forgiveness. I told him it was OK and that we understand that his joy at his continuing recovery is making him act goofy. He loves us all, and I said we all love him very much.

    Hi All -

To Carol Nichols - I received the same response yesterday.

    Martitia - Golden words again.

Mary S - Thank you so much for your prayers.

In thinking about Barbaro this morning and the Senate, I flipped to the date on my inspirational calendar. I love Emily Dickinson and one of her poems appeared for this morning. I thought, how appropriate for right now...

Hope is the thing with feathers
    That perches in the soul,

The NM aides I talked to were really nice as well. It's usually only Katie in Burns' office that isn't. I'm thinking the aides are getting frustrated at the phone, but then, isn't that the job they agreed to do when they got hired?????

Even in TX calls the aides were very nice, and I expected your senators aides to be a bit cold, here I am from out of state, and I support 1915, but they are always very polite.

That one in Durbin's office is either new, or extremely flustered.

    Posted by: Cora-IL at November 16, 2006 3:26 PM

When i called Hillary Clinton's office yesterday, I got a live little person. I told her how excited we were that the Senator had come on as a co-sponsor of S-1915. She said, "We're excited too!"

So now, Dick Lugar is babbling on about Indian nuclear testing. Too many short white guys running this country, IMHO. Please let S1915 up on the floor today. TODAY!

Dear God: please remember and shelter your servants, the horses--those that were loved, those that were discarded, those that weren't fast enough, those who couldn't jump high or far enough, the premarin mares and foals, all that are terrified. All that are lost. Please get this terrible industry out of our country. Please move your public servants to feel the urgency The Barbaro Nation feels....And God, could you do this today?

I definately agree with everything Jeri said earlier this morning. I am so happy my friend, Roseann, alerted me to this website five months ago. It is awesome, and the Friends of Barbaro help to make my day, every day!

I agree with Jeri that I do love Barbaro as if he were my own. He certainly has a huge place in my heart. Heck, I have five framed photos/limited editions of him in my house!!! (I do have seven of my own precious pinto. She is the apple of my eye!)

I also second Jeri's assessment of all of Barbaro's "people". They are just wonderful, with huge hearts and a great love for horses. I wish every horse could be surrounded by these heros. To...the Jackson's, Michael, Peter, Dr. Richardson, Dr. Anderson, Edgar, and all who have touched Bobby's life from NBC, you are an inspiration for everyone.

Alex, you are a saint! Your first miracle was bringing all of us together to pray for Bobby and...He lives! Your second miracle is how this website helps other equine causes. It is possible, that because of this website, horse slaughter will, very soon, be a thing of the past in this country. Thank you just doesn't seem to be enough. (Of course, your birthday is coming up!)

To all our fallen heros; Ferdinand, Exceller, Ruffian, Go For Wand, Lost in the Fog, and now sweet Pine Island, to name a few, Rest in Peace.

    I love you, Bobby, forever.

I don't know that they will say ANYTHING about S. 1915 on the floor. I don't think they mention every little add-on, on the floor. If the Ag appropriations bill passes, I think the only way we will know whether S. 1915 is tacked onto it may be through the inside track. Shelley will let us know what has happened.

Remember that if S. 1915 does not pass this way, WE DO NOT GIVE UP!! We are the FOB. We move onto the next plan; the co-sponsors can still try to get S. 1915 onto the floor.

If you are still on, you are getting the tornado weather we had yesterday. Be careful! It came up within a few seconds warning and demolished a whole bunch of apt. houses, some houses, a huge skating/video/preschool combo place called Fun Zone & Learning Zone, messed up our main Post Office branch.

STEVE & BDUDE-The weather was not as scary as Ivan was, when a tree(small tree) fell on our house and another broke in front yard. This time was more horrible for everyone else that was injured /involved. They thought no deaths, but one car accident was believed to be caused by water ponding on interstate. So many folks had to be evacuated to shelters, could not stay in their homes, or what was lef of them, so sad. Nov. is fast becoming a tornado month for us every year, we have one, or a hurricane-OMG!

BDUDE-You are the bestest burm!! I am so glad you are eating and acting like your old self again! Keep up the excellent progress, lil man!good work!

    Janice from Florida:
Glad you enjoyed the post. Now picture this! Go into any sports bar today. Everyone is mad as they want to watch football, hockey, etc. But they can't. All sports bars are overrun with horses. They have demanded every TV be tuned into CSPAN! Imagine the conversation when the camera is on Burns. One horse asks, looking at Burns, "Is that what they mean by disaster relief?" Another horse responds, "No, that's comic relief! Disaster relief came last week in Montana came when they voted in a new senator!" Then the camera picks up Senator Clinton. All the horses rise as one, raise their glasses and in unison yell, Hip, hip Hayray!" And they continue to do so as the camera spots all the good hearted senators who care for our equine friends. One horse proclaims he's been a democrat all his life. Another horse says, "Son, we are all American horses. We deserve to be treated with honor and dignity as we have done so much for this country. Our ancestors spilled their blood to build this nation. Now it's time all Americans stand up and give us the respect we have earned. Democrat, Republican! Don't matter son! We are American horses!" All the sports junkies, with tears in their eyes, begin hugging horses and everyone begins singing Auld Lang Syne! Sports bars will never be the same! And America will be a better place because the horrors of the slaughter industry will be gone forever. I, for one, will put up with the inconvenience of an over crowded Starbucks. I will hold the door open for any horse and he/she can have my spot in line!

    *************IMPORTANT, EVERYONE LISTEN UP!
    ***********************************************

Just this moment I got off the phone after speaking directly with an aide to Sen. Frist. Of course, I first expressed our desire to have Sen. Frist, as Senate Majority Leader, put S 1915 on the floor for a full Senate vote during this Session. After this, I decided to take a bolder step and I told the aide that I had "heard some discussion" that S 1915 might be attached as an amendment to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill and come to the floor in that manner.

HERE IS WHAT HE SAID ...

"I CAN ONLY TELL YOU WHAT I KNOW AND THAT IS THAT S 1915 IS STILL IN COMMITTEE AND NOT ATTACHED AS AN AMENDMENT TO ANY OTHER BILL."

I then repeated to him "From what you know, but can you tell me if what you know is bonafide information?"

    HE ANSWERED:

"YES THIS IS BONAFIDE INFORMATION, S 1915 IS STILL IN COMMITTEE AT THIS TIME."

    ##################################################

So, take it for what it's worth, but this is exactly what he told me in very succinct language. So we need to keep calling, faxing and emailing Frist.

I have also called Nelson and Martinez here in FL and expressed the same desire to get other colleagues to co sponsor and to press Frist to get this vote on the floor in this session.

Posted by: Christine at November 16, 2006 4:19 PM

Sorry to make you all wait but I wanted to verify my facts before I posted. Apparently, facts change from minute to minute according to how quickly the senate moves.

It has been announced that the Senate will get to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill LATER today. However, that will just be to address the Disaster Relief amendment that is part of that bill.

Senator Landrieu's office has confirmed that our amendment has NOT been filed yet and that is being discussed now.

Right now the India-Ameica bill is being addressed and is expected to take up much of the day. So, even if they get to the Ag bill it won't be until much later in the day and may not be resolved during this session.

I've also been informed that there is a lot of support for our bill but that it might take more time. They are still very hopeful that it will get there, just not sure when.

Basically, this is directly from Frist and Landrieu's offices. HOWEVER, THEY WERE BOTH ADAMANT ABOUT STRESSING THAT THINGS COULD CHANGE AT ANY TIME!!!

There are approximately 100 seats in the Senate. How many, so far, in the Senate are in support of the bill. Anybody know. Trying to figure out what our chances are when it comes to vote.

    ### Margie, your visual of Barbaro's late night activities are hilarious. Thanks for the laught.

All I kept thinking about last night was the image of that poor mare at Joe's waiting for her banana. Beautiful soul, how could anyone ever harm her or the others. Thank you, God, for leading us on this path and showing us what we can accomplish.

The barrel racer is not the first clonsed horse.
Two or three years ago, in Italy, a Haflinger mare was cloned, producing her filly, whom they named Promotea, after Prometheus. She was all over the news for a while, but I can never seem to find anything about her any more.

    Hi Pamela ...

I have to guess that you are referring to my post earlier and my conversation with an aide to Sen. Frist.

Rest assured that I was VERY CAREFUL not to divulge any "confidential" information as to sources, etc. It was a very general comment that I made to him.

Having said this, however, I find it very strange that you would mention this here now since we have ALL been posting on this very public board for the last couple of days now ALL of the information that we have been given and learned IN DETAIL. We have talked about the Agricultural Appropriations Bill ... we have talked about it possibly being attached to an amendment to this bill to get it passed. NONE of this information was kept secret or even behind the privacy of the chat rooms and discussion boards. ALL of this information was disclosed right here, out in the open, on this board. Where do you think I learned all of this from? LOL

I am an intelligent woman with a great deal of standards and principles ... I know 'what' to say and to 'whom' I should say it. But thanks for the vote of confidence anyway ...

Thanks, Shelley, for the great information. This, pretty much, corroborates what Frist's aide told me earlier today, even though I had hoped to hear differently. So, as of right now, this has not been filed as an amendment, but that could change at any moment, hopefully. Frist's aide was quite certain about the information he gave me, so I guess that it was "bonafide" coming directly from the Senator's office.

Thanks to whoever posted that article about the cloned barrel racing horse. If you have never had the chance to watch barrel racing do try to do so. It is very exciting. One cowgirl sets out from one end of the arena and runs a pattern (pyramid) around the barrels, whoever gets the fastest time wins. There is a time penalty if you knock over a barrel. Charmayne and Scamper were just the best! They were actually from a little town just north of where I grew up and Scamper was a working feedlot horse when she found him. She really loves him and its so cool that she obviously still has him and loves him enough to do this. To have watched Scamper at his best was just amazing, he was the superhorse of his sport.

Because the only information that any of us could obtain would be information that was publicly acknowledged and posted right here on this forum which, by the way, is attached to every single "Google Alert" for Barbaro and other racing news. So, anyone reading this board could find out all about the Senators, the Ag Appropriations Bill, the proposed attachment as an amendment, etc. It's all here as you so carefully and intelligently explained to all of us yesterday in full detail. I thank you for that education ...

That's why we don't release any information until it has been verified. Sometimes we have to wait for the verification. Please be patient. We do pass everything along as it changes.

    BARBARO VS. BERNARDINI ...

HAY ALL ... MIKEC ... YOU WILL LOVE THIS ...

    Wednesday, November 15, 2006
    Barbaro vs. Bernardini
In the only Daily Racing Form story that my coworkers will read (or care about) this year, we were told that Barbaro's leg can fully support his full weight.

Speaking of Barbaro, Dan Illman has done a look at Barbaro vs. Bernardini on his FormBlog.

Illman compares Bernardini's six wins this season where he defeated 11 stakes winners and 9 graded winners with Barbaro's four victories this year where he defeated a staggering 25 stakes-winners, 17 of which were graded stakes winners. Keep in mind that a majority of Barbaro's winners were faced in the Kentucky Derby, so if you don't count the Derby it brings his numbers down to earth -- but why wouldn't you count the Derby?

Illman's stellar research reveals the following numbers:

    Bernardini
    1/7/06 maiden special weight - didn't win
3/4/06 maiden special weight - no past or future stakes-winners*
4/29/06 Withers - no past or future stakes-winners**
5/20/06 Preakness - Sweetnorthernsaint (G2 Illinois Derby, etc), Brother Derek (G1 Hollywood Futurity, Santa Anita Derby, etc)Platinum Couple (won Damon Runyon Stakes)Like Now (G3 Gotham, etc)Diabolical (winner of Gallant Bob Handicap, Nick Shuk Memorial Stakes, Stanton Stakes), we won't mention Barbaro's name for fear of being stoned out of the place.
    7/29/06 Saratoga - Sunriver (G2 Peter Pan)
8/26/06 Travers - Bluegrass Cat (G1 Haskell Invitational, etc.)High Cotton (G3 Northern Dancer Breeders' Cup, etc.)
10/7/06 Jockey Club Gold Cup - Wanderin Boy (G2 Brooklyn Breeders' Cup, etc.)Andromeda's Hero (G3 Fred Hooper Handicap) Dylan Thomas (G1 Irish Champion Stakes, G1 Irish Derby, etc.)
    ******
    Barbaro
1/1/06 Tropical Park Derby - Lewis Michael (Grand Canyon Handicap)Mr. Silver (Appleton Juvenile Turf Stakes, Sophomore Turf Stakes)Can't Beat It (G3 Calder Derby, etc.)Rehoboth (Carl Rose Classic Handicap, Carterista Handicap, American Dreamer Stakes)
2/4/06 Holy Bull Stakes - Doctor Decherd (Aventura Stakes)Sunriver (G2 Peter Pan)Fagan's Legacy (Pilgrim Stakes)Saint Augustus (What a Pleasure Stakes)Big Lover (Ride the Rails Stakes)
4/1/06 Florida Derby - Sharp Humor (G2 Swale, etc) Sunriver Saint Augustus Rehoboth
5/6 Kentucky Derby - Bluegrass Cat (G1 Haskell Invitational, etc.) Jazil (G1 Belmont Stakes) Brother Derek (G1 Hollywood Futurity, Santa Anita Derby, etc)Showing Up (G1 Secretariat Stakes)Sweetnorthernsaint (G2 Illinois Derby, etc)Deputy Glitters (G2 Ohio Derby, etc)Point Determined (G3 Affirmed Handicap)Seaside Retreat (won Charlie Barley Stakes, Display Stakes)Lawyer Ron (G2 Arkansas Derby, etc.)Cause to Believe (G3 El Camino Real Derby, etc). Private Vow (G2 Kentucky Jockey Club, Futurity)Sinister Minister (G1 Blue Grass Stakes)Bob and John (G1 Wood Memorial, etc.)A. P. Warrior (G2 La Jolla Handicap, San Felipe Stakes)Sharp Humor Keyed Entry (G2 Hutcheson Stakes)

Hell of a post by Illman.

    Illman doesn't note:
    * High Finance, who was on the early Derby Trail, placed.
**Doc Cheney was the runner up in this race. Doc Cheney later came in second to Showing Up in the Dweyer (GII); he also finished 9th in the Florida Derby -- won by Barbaro.

I just read Joe at TB FRiends' page today. This is doing on a shoestring what we all are hoping will manifest through passage of this bill - today, tomorrow?? How very overwhelmed and grateful I am that we are given this window into the world of horse rescue every day, and it includes the pain as well as the glory.

In just a few sentences Joe made clear the horrible conflict of having to deal with the KB's, to stay within a respectful circle of communication, in order to save the few he can. He mentions Felix, the KB who traded the crippled mare for the Ruffian plate, and how the people at the track think Felix is a trainer. The dirty little secret is not even known to people who work with these beautiful horses at the track! We know cynicism and profiteering and shady deals happen everywhere, but in just a few words Joe has revealed the extent of this deception. What is Felix going to do when this bill IS PASSED - ?!!!

Honey Bunch was the one taken off the slaughterhouse truck on Tuesday - and she lay her head alongside Joe's when it was time to eat yesterday. He says she is incredibly kind...

Only have a few minutes, but had to touch base. Prayers and calls, calls and prayers.

    Dear Ms. Howard:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for S. 1915, the Virgie S. Arden Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I am honored to serve you as Majority Leader of the United States Senate, and it is a privilege to respond to your concerns.

I have heard from many Americans who are concerned about the slaughter of horses for human consumption. In 2005, it is estimated that more than 90,000 horses were slaughtered for human consumption in foreign countries, primarily in Europe and Asia. Congress has been debating whether to ban such slaughter for some time. You may be interested to know that I supported an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill, which was signed by the President into law, that restricts the slaughtering of horses for human consumption at federally inspected plants.

The Virgie S. Arden Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is currently being considered by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Please know that I understand your concerns, and I will certainly have your comments in mind should this legislation be considered by the full Senate.
Again, thank you for contacting me.

    Dear Senator Frist,
Thank you for your reply to my letter. Though I appreciate the fact that you voted for Public Law 109-97, that particular law only removed the government's financial responsibility for inspecting the horse slaughterhouses. It did not stop nor did it permanently slow down the process of slaughtering 90,000 AMERICAN horses annually for sale and consumption in foreign countries. 90,000 is the the total of just American horses slaughtered annually, not the total internationally. A law must be established to totally ban the horse slaughter for human consumption, such as "The slaughter of horses for consumption is hereby banned."
Though I have no objection to other cultures eating horses, I do object to them eating AMERICAN horses. I object to the inhumane transportation, treatment and slaughter methods used to kill these horses. There are many other reasons to ban slaughter for human consumption, but these are the most compelling for me.
I am well aware that the Virgie S. Arden Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is currently being considered by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. That is the reason that I wrote you. Unless this bill has enough cosponsors or makes it out of committee, it has no chance of being enacted. I know that you are aware of that, and I am requesting that you cosponsor the bill and/or see that it makes it out of the committee and put on the floor for a vote. As the Majority Leader of the Senate, you have the power to see that something is done about this. I would appreciate any consideration that you can give towards getting this bill made into law.
    Thank you,
    Cyndie Howard

Hi Anita...the Bill that was signed by the President only made the Federal Funding of the USDA for the inspection of the Slaughter Houses against the law. It was believed that this would stop the slaughter. However, a loop-hole allowed them to circumvent this law by granting the Slaughter Houses the right to privately pay for these inspections.

The current Bill will make Horse Slaughter illegal
    outright.

Just an FYI...the cattle industry pays for these inspections currently....

    Hi Everyone--

Sorry--I have not figured out how to "link" to a story, so I'll just hope you can copy and paste these! Both are stories on recent animal legislation--the first on a bill against animal fighting. The second is about the bill aimed at animal activists (extremists).

    http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=2652909&page=1

Regarding the cloned barrel horse--I read that article with interest yesterday. Ironic, isn't it, considering we are told how many "surplus" horses there are that we need to slaughter them to control populations?

I have mixed feelings about this issue, but was quite happy to see that the "Savings and Clone" company that went into business to clone "beloved pets" went OUT of business. With over 4 million cats and dogs euthanized in this country every year, there is no reason to "clone" a pet when there are so many wonderful animals waiting in shelters to be adopted. Same goes for all the "designer" dogs that have become "trendy" the last couple of years! Why purposefully breed more mixed-breed dogs? Just food for thought. . .

Missouri Horse Heroes benefit is Saturday night at the St Louis Zoo. Some GREAT auction items, including photos of all the rescued horses, and LOTS more (thanks, Alex!!!!)

    KEEP CALLING, FAXING AND PRAYING!
    KEEP GROWING, HOOF!
    Strength and sunshine to Barbaro!!!

hi first of all lots of love and hugs to our sweet horse barbaro. just asking that all horse lovers call their senators at 2022243121 to vote for the american horse slaughter prevention act. s.1915. over 100,000 horses slaughtered each year for human consumption. if we push now, there is a chance the senate will hear this bill before the session ends. this could save over 2000 horses a week.

Posted by: hilary thomas at November 16, 2006 6:10 PM

    Linnie,

Those are some amazing stats. In a single race Barbaro blows away 14 graded stakes winners in the Kentucky Derby while Bernardini only beats 3 in two separate races (Preakness and the Jockey Club Gold Cup). And I am not counting Barbaro as a horse that Bernardini "beat", he broken down and did not finish.

Also interesting is that up until the Preakness, Barbaro had beat 3 graded stakes winners and Bernardini none! One can only wonder if Barbaro had not broken down and won the Preakness, the difference between the two horses would be a moot point.

Very interesting insight...thanks for sharing this.

Posted by: Nancy J in CA at November 16, 2006 6:12 PM

Forgot to add to the last paragraph that if we did exclude the Kentucky Derby, the stats still show Barbaro is the better horse.

Alex, it's good news to hear that many owners, trainers, jockeys and exerciser riders are preferring the synthetic track. I am determined to watch (and wager on) horse races ONLY if they are on the synthetic surfaces. I just do not have the stomach for any more Barbaro and Pine Island tragedies.

I truly do hope that the writers who are voting understand the real "facts and figures" here on this. I also agree with you that Barbaro did not compete in The Preakness, for all intents and purposes; therefore, he could not have 'lost' a race in which he never competed.

Shannon, I don't have a Derby program, but if memory and information serve me correctly, I do believe that all horses carry a weight of 126 lbs for this race; not sure either about fillies, but I know all the colts must carry this weight. In fact, I am looking directly at a copy of Secretariat's Belmont Stakes Program and all horses carried 126 lbs. for that one, so I'm sure it's the same with the Derby and Preakness as well. I'm sure that someone will correct me if I am mistaken!! Thanks !!!!

Not taking a thing away from Berni, and if he had won the BC Classic, I wouldn't even be in this conversation because he WOULD deserve the Award, but now everything is "suspect" at least in my opinion as to which horse really deserve 3 year old Champion and I don't think that "when" they raced should be nearly as important as "how, where and who" they raced.

Thanks to all of the countless FOBs that have offered their prayers and condolences regarding the loss of my Grandmother. Before she drifted into a coma, she asked me everyday about how Barbaro was doing and wanting updates on the anti-slaughter bill. I would tell her of all the things we were doing, and I showed her the responses I got from Senators offices. It was one more thing we shared together.

If there's any way she can help from heaven, she's doing it. She would never stand for cruelty to any of God's creatures - man or horse. She's an angel on our side still praying we can somehow stop the awful slaughter of horses. We can do this.

I will take note of your concerns and pass them along to my family and colleagues who may or may not be interested because, as you know, there are more important things going on in my life. Rest assured that I will thoroughly investigate the issues. However, I simply can not guarantee that I will be able to come to a conclusion regarding your worthiness prior to election day. Well, I have to agree that the writer of this blogpost certainly has his facts straight, but I doubt that anyone on this site was ever in Bernardini's camp to win the award UNTIL he proved himself in the BC Classic. I certainly wanted to give Berni a fair shake and felt that he should not be disparaged or discarded simply out of love and loyalty to Barbaro, because 'that' is blind loyalty without treating each horse with due respect for his accomplishments. I was one of those people who did come to the defense of Bernardini, and I would do the very same thing again because I felt that he was being unfairly maligned at the time by some people who just didn't want any horse to beat Barbaro's record. And that, to me, was biased and unfair. I still maintain that to this day.

Having said all of this, however, Bernardini did not win the BC Classic and now all of the facts are tumbling out about a variety of statistics which do substantiate the hard facts that Barbaro is the better horse on the racetrack, but this could only really be determined after his showing in the Classic and who he raced against, the times, track distance, etc. The facts are the facts and not out of blind love or loyalty, but out of fairness, equality and enlightened facts and information, just coincidentally, the horse that I do love and that I am loyal to deserves this honor ... and that, unequivocally, is Barbaro!

Good comments, Greg ... always appreciate your posts.

Hi Marilyn/CA -- I have requested that The Nebraska Senators Co-sponsor the bill but have not heard a reply back from them. Senator Nelson owes me one so I will try and see if he remembers. I will get on the phone right now and see what they have to say. It does sort of sound like perhaps Sen. Frist is perhaps jumping ship. I sure hope not though. Alot of us are depending on him especially our 4 legged friends.

D'Anne-I totally forgot about you going to the devil dentist! You know I am eared more of them than anything in the world. I did not go for over 20 yrs. When I finally did go, I had to have my old fillings replaced with guess what?--root canals! ahyessireebob...thought I would die. I chose a dentist that gave sedative pills, after I had it done and found out I paid $4oo.oo for a valium, I was hot! Next time I braved shots w/out pill. Well I will not go into how I almost hit the tech and almost got politely asked to leave-HAHHA. All turned out ok. I am not near as fearful now.

In Nebraska We Have Term Limits On Our State Senators. They Can Only Serve 2 Terms And Then Empty Their Desks Out And Go Home. Best Thing That Ever Happened. This Should Be The Norm I Would Think Instead Of Making Career Politicans Out Of Them. Lots Of Them Cry The Blues But It Does Bring Fresh Blood Into Our State Governing Body. Washington Needs A Good Shakeup To Get Some Of The Career People Out Of There Also. This Last Election Showed Some Of Them They Can Be Replaced.

Dawn......asked for a copy of this. I had printed it out, so I typed this copy for her. I can't post in the forum so I'll put it here. Hopr its OK with everyone. Thanks.

Tuesday, November 14th....Going through the motions. Our vet Lisa Wallace and I have this thing about the number three. Three times bad things will happen, & then life permits a break from the sadness. Yesterday the crippled old mare Blondie said enough already, & Lisa helped end her suffering. On Saturday the starving mare Babs was euthanized & now we pray number 3 never comes. But we know how number 3 lurks. Been through this a thousand times...

Blondie came from Animal Control, & she had suffered unbelievable toeture. The things people do to animals. Blondie lived in our yard, & she knew how to tell time. Each morning at 5:30 Blondie would be at our back door, waiting for a banana. Blondie had yucky teeth, so carrots & apples were a challenge. But she loved her bananas. Especially if you put one on a peanut butter sandwich. The old blind mare Georgia & Blondie were a twosome. Last night Georgia would cry out, but we know she knows.

Grieving is the easy part. No one at the back door at 5:30 is the hard part……

The killer truck comes soon,& I always choose the pathetic. My wife Cathy says I choose the pathetic because it is the pathetic which needs us most. 97 horses on our ranch, 40 or 50 cats, & 9 dogs. Bunches of chickens & ducks. All of us once unwanted. Pathetic leads the way.

Play Misty For Me also lives in our yard, & she keeps kicking at Blondie to rise. Get up please. The rain was cold, & I covered Blondie in tons of blankets. Misty would pull off the blankets & stare at Blondie. I cover her back up, but Misty pulls the blankets off again. Finally I realize Misty needs her saying goodbye time…..

We are a silly little ranch. Rock & roll & two day old doughnuts. In the background are insurance agents & contractors & day to day dealings with horse killers. But it is the animals which count the most. Watching them grieve. Watching them say so long. Enemies cuddle together when the rain comes. All the torture & abuse Blondie went through, yet ther was not an evilthought in her soul. Horses teach us about forgiving…..

My Luck they will get into this issue while I am having my MRI at 5.. just will be my luck!!

I sent this to some others about the support we had with my Ohio House rep with trying to defeat the animal terrorist bill. He was the only one to stand up and argue against it..

I am so proud of my Ohio Rep!!! I have been in contact with him all thru this ordeal with the Anti-slaughter bill, he is such a great advocate for animal rights (and our rights)

He emailed me this past monday and said he would see about getting Senator Dewine to co-sponsor the bill and also sign the letter. Nothing yet back from him on this, but keeping my fingers crossed.

Mr Kucinich also has been to the TWR site and was HIGHLY IMPRESSED with our support and organization!! I also sent him to our Campaigning for barbaro site also.

His words were "you all should be very proud of yourselves!!"

(he also said he had a couple of other supporters come here also to see what the FOB's are all about)

So people in "higher power" do come and visit and are impressed with what we are ALL doing...

Keep up the good work!!! Sorry I have not been posting much but have had some health issues come up that I need to deal with, and also my Mother (she is 87) has been ill.. this time of the year worries me with her... she has COPD and other health issues and has some issues with breathing problems the last couple of days..

so if you have a spare minute, please just say a small prayer for her.. She goes to the dr's tomorrow am, and I hope they do not put her in the hospital...

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at November 16, 2006 8:34 PM

The moment that Barbaro was retired the media was looking for another KING to CROWN !!!!

They were the ones always pushing Bernardini !!!

Our FOB'S were very astute in evaluating things and quickly deduced that Bernardini really had no competition in his races with the exception of the Breeders Cup which of course we all know ...BERNARDINI LOST !!!

Unfortunately some media do not like to admit their mistakes.....

HORSE OF THE YEAR...should be more appropriately renamed !!!
It seems it has become HORSE WHO MAKES THE MOST MONEY IN THE YEAR....
IF it really is HOY....there is no doubt who deserves HOY and that is a no contest....

BARBARO meets all the qualifications in spades..
Maybe that is the problem...HE HAS NO COMPETITION FOR HOY AS IT DOESN'T EXIST !!!!!

I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE BARBARO RACE "BIG RED"
THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A RACE!!!!!

Am getting in a post - just got home and haven't been able to track the storm.

Re Sen. Frist's response: I received something similar from Sen. Santorum - that he's in a time of transition and that Sen.-elect Casey may be the better person to contact.

Heck no. As far as I'm concerned Sen. Santorum is still MY elected representative until 12/31 and he darn well better show up when S1915 is presented for a vote. He is still expected to do his job and I will not accept his attempts to weasel out of this one. I will compose a letter to him overnight stating this in as respectful terms as I can.

Lights are flickering so I'd better sign off.

He refused to "play ball" with Muny Light and the banks. It cost him the reelection, but he is working his way back up the political ladder. He was quite a force at the 2004 Dem. Convention. If anyone can convince DeWine to co-sponsor, I'm betting on him. Hope you hear from him soon. He is one of the few politicians with integrity in tact!!!!

    ## The girl at the commerce committee number said today they are very optimistic at getting S1915 up for a vote. She said they will be working through next Wed. Does Shelley or anyone know for sure if they are working next week? First time I have heard that tone
from her, good news I hope.

If anyone is interested, on the DB under help needed now, I donated in honor of a TB that raced for 10 years and Lost and Found saved him from slaughter. She sent his pictures and a list of other TB's they have saved recently. I have followed racing my entire life and have friends that are owners and trainers but I am floored at the number of TB's that get hurt and that's it. This list is a drop in the bucket - will never understand how these horses are treated as disposable items, dump them off for slaughter or let Joe or Kelly from Lost and Found figure it out. Hope this will change after S1915 passes.

He's not disheartened because he already knows how "they" are going to react ... he doesn't let it get him down. He says what he has to say and he bounces right back and just avoids people who don't support or encourage him. He's strong and self-confident and he definitely "goes his own way!"

I can't believe it ..I look outside and we have been having fluffy white clouds, sun and almost balmy breezes...I have to guess ...that the mountains split this awful weather and we escaped....thank goodness! I'd better check with my relatives in Greensboro and see what's going on in the Eastern side of the State. They are close to Raleigh . I have been partly dosing and peeking at CSPAN and watching for Ensign's bills to come up in about 20 min. I was hoping that one of them is S1915. It may be too much to hope for... Just a "heads up" that we should all take the above comment with a POUND of Salt as to the fact that it was "the" Emmitt Smith posting it today. From what I've seen on TV and read, Emmitt, Cheryl, Mario and Karina have been on a whirlwind schedule all day with media following last night's program. I highly doubt that Emmitt Smith would have time today to seek out the NBC site just to post a message to Barbaro. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I do find it pretty improbable.

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but I have my doubts about this one!!

Obviously a prankster. Two days ago there was Sarah Jessica Parker also with a post that sounded off.

news from an inside source in DC: the senators have an event this evening, and will not be working late after they move the India/nukes bill...she felt that S1915 will be moved to after they go on break:

"Here's the problem. The Ag spending bill HR 5384 was supposed to come up Wednesday afternoon but got stalled, as you know.
Among several complications: Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, raised objections to a possible amendment that would ban horse slaughter. I don't see it on the list of 60 amendments, but it could still come up.

Ag approps could still come up today, I'm told, but it's doubtful. It would be after this India Nuclear Bill, which hasn't even come up for final passage. Senators have an event tonight, so they're not going to work late. It's likely they'll kick it over until tomorrow or wait until December. But they have not said."

So there we have it. Keep prayers coming for passage before the break....but this person has been in the Beltway for over 25 years....

Joyce Moore( posted at 7:31) your letter to politicans running for office is "priceless" and should be sent to all, the only thing I would add is a paragraph that even "if we should decide to committ to them as a voter it would only be after they "committed to do what they say they will do" if we vote for them. Perhaps they should have to sign a contract making them to what they say they will do. How many get elected on what they say they will do and then they "forget" why they were elected.

If any of you guyses tell me that colostrum will help me in this direction, then I will go for it, so I'm waiting to hear from you sometime today, if at all possible. Thanks!

    *************IMPORTANT UPDATE*****************

Just hung up with Senator Landrieu's office to check status. This is the OFFICIAL update....

The Agricultural Bill will be brought up tonight but ONLY to introduce Senator Conrad's amendment as they promised him they would. They will then recess and not be back until after Thanksgiving break.

Senator Landrieu's staff will be regrouping next week to figure out the best strategy for S1915. They may decide against adding it to the Ag Appropriations Bill because that looks like it might have trouble passing.
They will, of course, figure out where it has the best chance of passing. I have been told that they will not be making any final decisions on where to put S1915 for at least two weeks or right before the senate recovenes. However, they will be working on this through the break.

I strongly suggest you keep making your calls as we've been asked to do. If there is any change in direction, I will let you know immediately.

There's still good reason to be hopeful. Senator Landrieu's staff and others are diligently working to get this legislation passed. These kinds of delays are not unusual.

I want to STRESS that there is NO indication from anyone that this cannot still happen!!!

Posted by: ShelleyA at November 16, 2006 10:54 PM

Just checking in for an update. Jeez - I had hoped that I was going to read that IT PASSED. But not to be today. We'll continue the same strategy that we've been using.

Wendy's photos are great!! I hope she sends more. Next best thing to being there.

    Hi, FOB's!

The tornado watch expired at 6 p.m. - but the flood watch and high wind watch are still in effect here in Chester County. No power failures (some flickering lights...)Now I'm worried about "the boys" but I'll be at the ranch tomorrow...but the cats and I are OK. Are the other MD, DE, PA, NJ, NY people OK? My one cat who is traumatized by storms just came out of her hiding place so I know everything is OK. Kathy, Linda a, Lou Ann, thanks for keeping track of me. Storms are heading northward (northeast???) so all those in its path, please be careful.

Wendy, LOVE the pics of your trip to FH. Isn't it an awesome place????

Must go prep for tonight's vigil. Take care everybody.

D'Anne- I do not know where in NC, but 7 people were killed by the tornadoes there. My dad saw it on the news channel, not sure which one, sorry. It was really bad there. They finally determined ours at a f-2 tornado, winds at around 130-155 miles per hour cut a swath at 4.5 miles in Montgomery, and did damage in Pintlala, and in Pike County it blew apart a water tower holding 250,000 gallons of water and destroyed their volunteer fire department as well. I hope you get in touch with your relatives and that they all are faring as well as I did. Good luck sister.

I am so glad you are alright, it was frightening for me yesterday. My aunt from Apache, OK called today, they had only received the winds and cold weather it brought in, no rain or tornadoes thank God.

Amazing, isn't it, how we pay our Senators to waddle back to Washington for a lame duck session for a few days and then fly back home for a 2 week Thanksgiving break! They need to keep their hind ends there and get some work done for a change and stop racking up frequent flyer miles at taxpayers' expense! What a life. . .

    Laura in Mt Laurel:
I'm glad the fun posts crack you up! We all know what a critical time this is and that the time is short. And the deeper the passion, the more the anxiety. Stress relief is required! Smiles are important. We have to keep our sanity, keep our eyes on the target. Keep calling because WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE! I have talked to aides who say we truly are. I asked one aide if we could bring Barbaro into the senate chambers and testify. He could show them the true soul of America's horses. He could give the senators who stall a demonstration of his bionic right leg. A few tables and chairs flying around might just be an eye opener. The aide said it would be a great idea. He said horses aren't allowed in senate chambers but he said he would see what he could do! I offerred free golf lessons and tickets to next years Kentucky Derby. He laughed. I said I wasn't joking, then we both laughed. He said he has talked to a lot people with drive like I displayed. I said my drive was rooted in getting done that which is morally correct! He said good luck to Barbaro. I said thanks, but get the senators moving or the Big Boss Horse just might show up for said demonstration. He said he would take free tickets for that!

Those of you who get the syndicated column "The Animal Doctor" in your newspapers will be pleased to read that we have an advocate in its author, one Dr Michael Fox. He directly addresses the AMVA opposition to the bill, calling is "unconscionable." He notes that as a member of the AMVA himself, he feels his voice and reputation were "neither represented nor served, but essentially betrayed" by the AMVA and were better represented by the testimony of the Association of Veterinarians for Anial Rights and the National Horse Protection Coalition. He sums up his lengthy defense of the bill by saying "..We should consider the American Horse Slaughter Protection Act not as a threat to the American way of commerce and industry but as an epxression of the emergence of a true democracy of compassion." WOW! Powerful Stuff!

I'll try to find it on line in my copious free time...! HA!

Thanks, ShelleyA, for the additional update.

Although I'm not enamored with the current status, it does re-affirm my 'faith' in people being honest and telling the truth as did the aide in Sen. Frist's office this morning when I spoke to him and he stated that this bill was "still in committee." I wanted to doubt him because I wanted to believe what we read from Sen. Clinton; i.e. that it has already been slated on the calendar. But, in the end, Sen. Frist's aide was completely honest and forthcoming with me.

So, onward and upward, the fight continues on!!! We will not be defeated by our own hand!!

    Horse attacks real estate agent:

November 15, 2006 BEDFORD, Ind. - The real estate business can be a real beast sometimes, Erika McKinney has learned.
McKinney was showing a house in Bedford when a horse bit her hand and then head-butted her into a tree. She was treated at the hospital but wasn't seriously hurt.
Diana Ritter, McKinney's client, says she's never seen anything like it. She says she was afraid the horse might come over the fence.
Veterinarian Klent Brown of the Animal Hospital of Bedford says it's unusual for horses to attack people.
Friday wasn't the first time McKinney has had a run-in with an animal while on the job. A llama once charged her while she was showing another home.
McKinney, who owns three horses and a pony, wasn't deterred by either attack.

For Designgirl: I lost my mom back in 2000 to leukemia and still miss her greatly! When Mom died, I suddenly felt old - I was no longer somebody's kid! She was my friend, confidante, nurse, doctor, a great cook, and she was always there for me when I needed her. Sounds like your Gram was a great lady! You can take heart in the fact that your Gram is now knitting coats for the horses in heaven, and grooming them as well. 94 Years Old! Wow whatta gal! My hairy child Lil Buddy (gigantic siamese toothless blue-eyed wonderboy) told me that he is very frightened of thunder. He always scrams when he sees lightening or rain, cause he knows what is coming next! BOOM!!!CRASH!
He runs, body slinking and tail low and
he hides underneath a curtain that disguises a little nook with shelves on it near the boyfriend's bathroom. I always know where to find my 16 lb mass of quivering furry flesh when it is thunderbooming outside! Poor thing! He needs some prozac I think, glad you only scoot underneath the covers lil man. I go to the Penn Website almost every day because I love Barbaro so much & I will continue to do so until he can go home. I feel that all our love and support is sending healing, positive energy to him and his progress seems to support that theory. He is so loved and he must sense that. I just wanted to say that I appreciate all the updates more than you know. I don't think I could love Barbaro more if he were my horse. Thank you again!

    ## We will keep calling and faxing. We have to follow Barbaro's role and stay positive, determined to end the horrific slaughter. Maybe the passage of S1915 will be a Christmas present for all of us, the best thing we could ever get.

Xtra prayers for little Opie and Felix tonight and God please protect Barbaro and all animals who are alone and scared.

Beautiful pictures of Round Pond, Filmmaker and Better Talk Now. They are special.

I'm in Louisiana, about 35 miles north of Baton Rouge.
The rain and really bad stuff was Tues. night but all day Wed was VERY windy and that lasted all last night. But there was really no damage, just when it's windy we lose electricty. I'm in a rural area. Lots of trees and debris to fall on power lines.
    Thanks for your concern.

My power flickered a couple of times yesterday after 4 pm but went off about 7:30 pm until about 2 am this morning. That really hacks me off too. I'm glad ya'll are ok, sounds like it was really bad for you guys.

After seeing Wendy's pix of Round Pond, I hope and pray that Bobby gets to do a little stud duty and that Round Pond is on the short list for dates. What magnificent babies they would make.

I have not been able to read or post today, but will try to catch up. I have just returned from the hospital. Many friends stopped by to see our friend Sharon and cheer her up. The tumor was cancer, Grade 4, the worst kind, very aggressive, and they were unable to remove it all. She is going to start an aggressive course of chemo and radiation on the 27th. Glad to see nothing "happened" while I was having my MRI and unexpected visit to the ER..

mental note to self.. never have MRI and not take anyone. (daughter got stuck in Columbus with Dense Fog in the area, so I drove myself) Something about this session of MRI (lasted an hour) just threw me for a "loop".. last I remember it was done, slide me out and I sat up..I remember telling her I felt weird. guess I passed out and hit my head on the sliding "bed"... when I came to, I was in the ER at the hospital. talk about scarey!!!!

ER doc says sometimes those MRI's will bother some people and do this. Took xrays of my "head".. guess they found I do have one. ha ha.. no concussion, just a big goose egg and headache from it.. They "almost" wanted me to stay overnight, but no way I said, My mother is ill and needs supervision.. so they let me leave after my daughter got here.. Her and my ex are to pick up mom's car later on...

So maybe this will knock some sense into me?? ha ha. nahh.. still stubborn..

Keep up the good work guys.. Keep calling and faxing and bugging the buggers out of those important senators. they do know who the FOB's are!!!

I apologize that this is so long. It is an email I got from In Defense of Animals. I thought it would be good information for our calls tomorrow since they specifically name Senator Kyl of AZ as someone asking to be called in support of S1915, and also give his phone number.

While the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA) enjoys wide support among both the public and legislators, the Senate has yet to approve their version of the Act (S 1915). If approved, the AHSPA would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international transport of live horses or horseflesh for this purpose.

The Senate is just about to reconvene after a long recess, and we need to get this bill up for a vote before the session ends. An estimated 2,000 horses are trucked to slaughterhouses and brutally killed each week this bill awaits action in the Senate, so we cannot allow our leaders to stall any longer. In light of this, one of Senator Jon Kyl's (R-AZ) constituents called his office on Tuesday, November 14th urging that he introduce the bill. She was told that, if Senator Kyl receives a lot of calls in support of the AHSPA, he will do what he can to get it to the floor.

Please call Senator Jon Kyl's Washington office immediately at (202) 224-4521. Let him know that you support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act and urge him to get S. 1915 up for a vote or attach it as a rider to another bill before the Senate adjourns.

Cora, I really found out that MRI machine (bed part of it) was HARD.. at least I was semi dressed, ha ha.. They let me put on the "mens" pants along with those icky gowns. I hate my leges being cold.. I was upset because they did not bring my clothes over, but was MORE upset as I had my Secretariat book inside a Barbaro Bag(special FOB sent me :) ) at the Imaging center.. I would have cried if they lost either of those!!!

I have NEVER fainted like that before... sure was a weird feeling waking up and wonder where the *%%% you are.. Need to change my emerg contact, they called my mother when I got there (still OUT) and upset her and had her scared but she called my daughter and Julie called and then called mom to reassure her. My mom has a hard time hearing on the phone, she is almost deaf and wears hearing aides.. I think I was more upset knowing they called her like that, esp as ill as she is and not feeling well.

So got that changed, so my daughter is now my emerg contact followed by one of my sisters...

    Barbaro,
We stand with you as you show us all, how to be more than we were. How we can be the best, how to be brave, to be strong and how to simply stand up in the face of overwhelming odds. Before you took this assignment, a tragic number of your friends had their life’s cut cruelly short because of HS and because of the poor conditions on the American horse tracks. You, Barbaro have showed us how to stand up, to be heard, and to make a difference.

    Laura,
Not sure exactly what you need to know about colostrum. I just know it really good for the digestive track. It is the same milk the human and animal babies get upon the first nursing session after birth, full of natural anti-biotics, helps establish good flora in the gut, vitamins, very essential for enfant growth and helpful for adult humans as well.

You can certainly feel free to call whoever you want. I am merely relaying a message from the people who have been working on this legislation. They asked us to make certain calls and not to focus on others.

The long and short of it is, I don't know why. I simply trust that they see the big picture and know what needs to be done.

    Laura,

You're welcome. I have a friend who sells raw milk with colostrum in it and she swears it helps people with digestive problems. The other thing that really helps me are Probiotics which is a supplement with acidolphilus (sp?) and several other "friendly" bacteria. Prescription drugs, ie. anti-biotics really wipe out the friendly flora in the gut. I avoid them!

I live in northern California, on Humboldt Bay in Arcata. It's very beautiful, redwood trees, dramatic coastline, rivers and it rains a lot! Last year we got 60" of rain! Where in Wash. do you live?

Lael Stables purchases Chilean Group 1 winner Eres Magica

International bloodstock agent John Fulton closed a deal on Thursday to purchase Chilean Group 1 winner Eres Magica on behalf of North American owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stables from owner-breeder Liliana Solari Falabella's Haras Don Alberto.

The Jacksons's homebred Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (G1). The three-year-old Dynaformer colt shattered his right hind leg in the Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 20 and developed life-threatening acute laminitis in his left hind foot in July. Barbaro continues to fight for his life at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

Eres Magica, a promising three-year-old filly by Stuka out of the Stagecraft (GB) mare Magica Aventura, scored a two-length victory over males in the 2,400-meter (11.93-furlong) Clasico El Ensayo (Chi-G1) (Chilean Derby), the first leg of the Chilean national Triple Crown, on November 1 over the Club Hipico de Santiago turf course.

Eres Magica won four of seven career starts in her native Chile, including three group victories. Fulton said Eres Magica will be shipped to Miami next week to begin her acclimation period before resuming her racing career in the United States.

A trainer has yet to be determined for Eres Magica. The Jacksons have horses in training with both Michael Matz, who conditioned Barbaro, and Barclay Tagg, trainer of Grade 1 winner Showing Up.—Michael Burns

It would be fun to follow a filly for a change. She sounds very talented, can't wait to see her photo. All the way from Chile! Must be kind of daunting for a horse to leave her home and come all that distance to a strange land and strange people who don't speak Spanish. Well, maybe they can get her around some Spanish speaking people!

    Laura-
Here is a site telling you about Probiotics. I eat yogurt made by Stoneyfield Farms, it is the only yogurt in US that has 6 live active cultures(and it is organic, and they give part of their profits to promote the earth's restoration. This yogurt really helps my stomach, look it up on website too- Stoneyfield.com

SORRY have not been able to read the Posts, but did manage to see Wendy's pictures. Gorgeous pictures and what an experience for you Wendy to meet Tim, Alex, and Michael, but most of all Round Pond and Better Talk Now (no offense intended).

Tim and Alex, what a life! I am certain along with the joy of working with the horses, alot of heartaches come along. To wake up every morning and know you are going to a job you love, money can't buy that.

    Thanks for sharing.

Bonnie MacRaith, Snohomish is an Indian name. It is north of Seattle, and somewhat southeast of Everett, in Snohomish County. Yes, It rains a lot here, too, and we also have rivers, tall Douglas firs (similar in appearance to redwoods). Snohomish is sometimes referred to as the antique capital of the Pacific Northwest. I don't live directly in the town itself, but that's where our mail comes from. Easy to find on a map of western Washington State.

I wonder if the Jacksons are thinking of Eres Magica as a mate for Barbaro? With a name like that she must be impressive!

The first of the pictures that Wendy took shows Better Talk Now with a bit with a flat round disc on the end. Is this a special bit or does it have some kind of a purpose?

    Maribel, thanks

Hard YES, cold .. nope.. they are nice and warm them up for you now!! at least they do at our Imaging center.. Give you footies to wear to keep your feet warm, and another PLUS.. a nice heated blanket for your legs.. ahhh. did the same thing when I had my surgery you got these wonderful heated blankets when they took you in (until they put you out)..

Now to train my dogs to do the same thing for me at bed time.. room is always chilly here..

Still got a HUGE goose egg on my head. tried to lay down for a bit but head hurts and just can not find a comfy enough pillow to use.. Plus worried about mom and have a "ear" open for her (room is right behind mine) as she was wheezing more tonight .. least no complaints about chest pain. but still.. 87 is still worrisome this time of year, esp with her history of COPD/Bronchitis..

shame ya know.. All those years they took care of us.. Now roles are reversed.. I am my Mothers keeper and caretaker.. Not complainin.. just a damn shame to get this age and not be able to enjoy life more.. she rarely leaves the house.. (well me either.. ha ha. .except for the torture chamber PT)..

So using this time to work up some more emails to send out to Senators tomorrow AM and a few others.. Almost got them done and set up to auto send at 7am...

Keep on working on the senators and calling, etc. They know who the FOB's are!!

    Hugs!!

    Nancy,

Alex could explain more but I believe the discs prevent the bit from sliding out the side of the horse's mouth. Each horse has a different mouth and how the bit fits their mouth is crucial. The horse's mouth is genrally pretty sensitive so the discs may hold the bit in place so the bit stays put.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at November 17, 2006 5:13 AM

BONNIE; Yes, she couldn't be going to a better place, but I wonder why they got her? That's different going to Chile to buy a race horse. Mabe they Do think she has the right Pedigree for Barbaro. I can imagine that no matter what farm he goes to, they will retain some breeding rights to him.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at November 17, 2006 5:17 AM

    Lynda,
Yes, Chile does seems like a far-flung choice but I imagine one has to get creative in finding possible breeding talent so that things don't get in-bred. The fact she beat a pack of guys is rather humorous! Barbaro better look out! She might be kind of wild!

Dora Crow in Montgomery, AL, thanks for the tip about the yogurt and Probiotics. I am writing this stuff down as you guys pass it on to me. I eat yogurt, too, but sometimes feel that is not enough. I guess I will have to try all of these remedies to see which one does the best job for me.
    ########
Dora, the best I can find out about your city being named "Monkey town" is that is is a CB radio slang term for Montgomery, AL, used by truckers to let each each other where they are going to or coming from. Possibly there is more than one city/town that goes by the name Montgomery, so that's what CBers use for your city. The term "monkey" in this sense may mean something else, but maybe the Urban Dictionary can tell us all what that means. Best to do that, in case that word turns out to be uncomplimentary.

Regards, and thanks again for all your help!

will the donut pillow fit my head?? ha ha. gosh forgot about those things!! Last time I had to use one was 25 yrs ago. My daughter bday was this week.. 13th.

she was born on Friday the 13th, at 10:13am,I was in labor to delivery for 1 hr and 13 minutes (quick I was) weighed 3lb 13 oz (premie). and was in the hospital for 13 days..

    Laura,

I have a pretty severe digestive problem. I do eat yogurt but I also take, twice daily, about a teaspoon in powder form of probiotics. You can also get it in capsules. Keep it refrigerated even if it doesn't tell you that on the lablel. In fact when you buy it it should be refrigerated. Go to a good health food store and get a good quality brand, they are not cheap but it has helped me. I don't know exactly what you have but if you want to email me I would be glad to share what I know with you about digestion. bmacraith@humboldt1.com

Thanks bonnie.. when Mom is not sick she does okay. Mostly what i do for her is clean, cook her meals and laundry. and the other normal household stuff that needs to be done (as I am able!).

when she is ill like now, I am almost like a mother, you worry and want to stick around. My daughter does help when I need it, lot lately! since my surgery.. but she is in school during the day.

We have a life line device.. I have my dog (maggie mae) trained that if she can not rouse mom or if mom falls, etc.. she can go over and hit the red alert button. That eases my mind when I am at PT 3 days a week. but wed and again tomorrow I have rearranged my PT times so my daughter will be here when I go. Just peace of mind for me.

ahh fun and eating out and movies. gosh I have not done those things in a couple of yrs.. Just not "feasible" for me to do those things .. someday.. most of my "entertainment" is my connection to the internet, with my sometimes cranky/likes to blue screen/whine older computer. I tell you, without that and also all the great people that I have "met" through this site .. I truelly would be "nuts" by now.

Helping as I can with email, etc on the Slaughter bill has been fabulous, but at times meloncoly. Makes me miss being with Horses.. someday will have one again. Been trying to get my "fix" of horses by wanting to volunteer at the local rescue here but &*&%%% doctor has not released/okayed that yet. and without that, they won't let me help.. so hoping Tuesday when I visit the dr again, he will allow me to do so. I sure enjoy the ones on the forum that are sharing their "horses" and experienc.. Esp Ms Maggie from MO.

Well suppose I should see if I can find a comfy spot and get some rest. check on mom one more time before I do so

Gnite all!! Thanks for all your well wishes for my mom. Keep her in your prayers. (her name is Lois). That she feels better soon and dr finds nnothing serious tomorrow. . 5 yrs ago this month, she was in the hospital all thru New Years with health problems similar

    Bonnie MacRaith,

I have an older female dog that came from a puppy mill, when rescued she had 20 pups she was nursing. Anyway, she has a lot of digestive issues and with each meal I feed her multi-strain probiotics and full-spectrum enzymes. The enzymes help her digest starches, fiber and protein more easily. I mention this as I understand a similar formula for humans can be helpful for those with stomach, intestinal, or bowel issues. I don't give her a special dog formula, I just buy her stuff from Whole Foods or from an online site called Swanson Vitamins. I thought I would mention this in case it helps.

It's a good thing I referred you to the Urban Dictionary for the definition of the term "monkey" in your city's nickname! There are a gazillion definitions for it, many unprintable on this Board. Given your geographic location, and the city's history, I'll let you draw your own conclusions; please don't be offended by what you read! I have lived in the deep South, mainly Portsmouth, VA and Gulfport, MS. Some of the best food in the country can be found there! Grits with butter, salt and pepper! Yummy! Fried okra - slurp! Gumbo - Ooh la la! Shrimp fresh off the boat and boiled with special spices - Wow! And super-friendly people like you and D'Anne of NC, whose postings on food make one's mouth water, plus all the wonderful info on stuff to help my poor digestive tract! The list goes on and on!

Well, I could go on and on, too, but I have to get up real early tomorrow and it's gonna be a long day!

By the way, can you tell me where I can find a Barbaro Beanie Baby?

Thanks again for all your help! It's greatly appreciated!
