    Barbaro Updates: 135

    updates are now here.

Update 1051: I just spoke to Peter who had spoken to Michael, who visited Barbaro this afternoon. Barbaro remains comfortable and got to go out today and graze. Another good report.

Alie from Kennett Florist had this to report in the comments (timestamp: 6:30 pm):

NBC is a great place today. Everyone was in good moods. The cupcakes were a big hit. The weather today is soooo nice. You don't even have to wear a coat. Barbaro & the donor horses got treats too.
Alex, have a great birthday- cheers.
    Alie

Alie ... I did! I spent most of the afternoon reading the many birthday cards I have received. Some very kind words, thanks.

Update 1050: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). I just spoke to Peter (12:05pm) to confirm.

Fondmort continues to improve: Fondmort up and on the mend. This short article includes a nice photograph of Fondmort, his trainer Nicky Henderson and the staff at the equine hospital. It remains a day-to-day situation.

Bernardini versus Barbaro for three year old of the year. The topic of conversation is heating up. Here is one vote for Barbaro (from someone who does not get to vote but ...): Vote here is for Barbaro.

Update 1049: Dr. Richardson is at a conference for a couple of days so the morning update will be from Michael's visit the evening before. I saw Michael coming off the track from my first set and he said Barbaro was well last night. Michael also got to see his left hind foot and expressed satisfactioon with what he saw. The rain seems to have cleared out and there is a nice cloudless sky this morning. Lets hope we have some dry weather now. I am about to get on Chappy.
    update friday, 7 am

Update 1048: My birthday party was fantastic, what a great surprise last night, and your generosity appears unbounded! Included in the gifts was a lovely album which I am sure will take me a nice long time to read through, a Fred Stone print of Barbaro, and very generous cheques for Freedom Hills and Lost and Found Horse Rescue Foundation. The latter I am particularly psyched about given their recent needs noted here: Help needed now. I'll need to call them this morning and alert them to your funding. Wendy took pictures.

As I noted yesterday, Graham Motion trained his 1,000th winner: Trainer Motion reaches 1,000-win milestone. Here is the quote from Graham:

"It was nice to have it happen here," Motion said. "It is pretty nostalgic because this is where I started. I was actually driving around the backside earlier on and went by my old barn.

"It was nice to do it here with Adrian, who has been with me from the start," Motion added. "It is not something you aim for but it is neat to do it. I have had backing of some tremendous owners throughout the years and the owners that got me started were right here in Maryland."

I also wanted to note there is a charity auction this saturday being held to support the MO horses that many here have also been supporting. The following is some text that explains what is happening with the auction:

The St. Louis Horse Heroes Charity Benefit will be held Saturday November 18th at the Lakeside Cafe at the St. Louis Zoo. Doors open at 6:30pm with a live auction at 9:00pm. ALL proceeds from this special event will benefit the Humane Society of Missouri, Missouri Equine Response Service, and the Eureka Fire Department Mounted Search and Rescue Team. Call Dawn or Lori at Homestead Equine 636-451-4655 to RSVP, make a donation, or to bid on any of the donated items available. Charity dinner and auction event tickets are $65 per person.

On September 27th a double decker semi carrying 42 horses bound for slaughter over- turned in the median on I-44 near St. Clair, Missouri. The Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch was called and immediately dispatched a team of veterinarians and volunteer rescue workers from Missouri Emergency Response Services to help free the severely injured horses. Twenty six horses were rescued and all have experienced severe trauma, including cuts, lacerations of their legs, head trauma and partial paralysis. They are being medically cared for and rehabilitated so they will now have a second chance at life. St. Louis Horse Heroes is a non-profit organizations formed by a group of veterinary professional in the St. Louis area including Homestead Veterinary Hospital, Foxcreek Veterinary Hospital, Equine Medical Associates, and Mid-Rivers Equine.

Subsequent to receiving the above notice I am told that they are at capacity with the attendance of the event (great news). If you want to see a list of items and bid, contact Dawn or Lori at the above number.

Dawn had sent me a couple of Barbaro hats for Michael to sign, they will be auctioned off. I also contacted a friend of mine who works for Godolphin. They sent over a jacket (signed by Frankie Detorri), a pen and hat. I have bid on those gifts!

The Barbaro update should be before 9 am.

Have a brilliant birthday, dear Alex! You have meant so much to so many here that you are well-deserving of all the gifts and tributes and gifts you received last night...now if "we" could only deliver S1915 for you today. I wanted it yesterday for my birthday, but would be more than delighted for November 17th to be THE DAY!

Happy Birthday Alex. I left my birthday greeting in the wee hours of the morning, so it is now part of yesterday's comments, but I meant everything I said. We are so lucky to have found TWR and you. You have enriched so many of our lives. I hope you truly understand how grateful we are. You are the man of the day!!! Relish every moment. Passing of S1915 will be icing on the cake. Cheers!!!!!!

TGIF - I've got a routine now. Email senators and send, then phone calls before nine. Keep on with as much spirit as we had on Monday.

Dearest Barbaro, sleep in because the weather is not that great. Michael will visit and groom you and change bandages, and you can expect treats and pampering. Rest and strengthen your leg and grow that hoof wall. Butterfly kisses to you from Bella, Gracie and me.

Next week is the last week I will be asking for donations for the Missouri accident horses' Christmas Stocking honoring the New Bolton Staff.

The following precious horses only have one sponsors name on their picture card. It looks a little sparse. They are: Bazonka Donk, Spirit, Crashina, CC, Liberty, Freedom, Dudley DoRight, Buckwheat, Gidget and Darla.

Email me at jroe19@adelphia.net if you would like to make a contribution and be included in the stocking. Dr. Sweeney will be presenting it to the staff at the Christmas Party.

A heartfelt thanks to all of you who have sponsored a horse or given to the general fund.

It's a Christmas present that keeps giving...
to the HSMO, the accident victims, and the staff of NBC. Peace and Goodwill to all.

    there is something comforting
about the bright green moss growing in a box by my kitchen window..
soft and delicate but closely ,,underneath, there are thousands of strands connected together..in a layered carpet..that feels like a kind of silk....
i have to think of something grand like this when reading posts that reflect omy own desolation from the battles to wake up dead politicians who use all this legisdlation espec our s1915- for their own needs..
    i am not roilling over..
    JOYCE , YOUA RE right
.i got those same replies too..or i can feel they hold the phone away from their ear..like frisk aide..this is a travesty and a tragedy..but it is a challenge for us..and in the day to life of Bobby..it is more then a fair match..he is fighting for his life..and so the invisible thousands upon thousands of other horses....
]so prayer is where i am going BEFORE my next round of calls.
what is it that they want
..can we figure this out ???
    the soft spot..
    tehn,we are in.
.bless you all for the efforts and it aint stopping me ..
. i had hoped we could give alex this as a birthday present
    ..HAPPY BIRTH DAY ALEX..
    .
but the great ones have asked for even more definition I suspect.
    .so deareat Barbaro,
, ENJOY THE SPLOTCHY SUN WE ARE Promised ToDAY
KNOW THAT WE WALK IN YOUR HOOVES..AND MAY THE GOLD OF THE GRASS AND THE UNUSUAL WARMTH SPIN YOU SOME OUTDOOR TIME.
.BLESS YOUR FOUR LEGS AND HOOVES AND YouR MIGHTY HEART
. BLESS ALL THE TEAM AND EVEN THE LITTLE MICE WHO LINE UP WIith BUG EYES TO WATCH YOUR EVERY OMVEMENTS
..MAYBE I ASK ALIE AND RACHEL TO INCLUDE IN THE NEXT BASKET AN OFFERING TO THE LITTLE CREATURES..HA HA..RIGHT.and THAK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT JOB ON ALEX'S BIRTH Day..
IT IS TIME TO MAKE THOSE PRIMORDIAL SAND AND SToNE BROWNIES FOR SENATOR ..AHEM--FRISK.
    ---- THE MOSS.-

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALEX!! Glad your party was a hit!! You deserve all of this and much more. All your Fans of Barbaro wanted to do something to show our appreciation. It took a lot of sneaking around through emails, but it was a success!! Without Debra Barton as our leader and Gloria Nussbaum none of the "tribute" would have been possible. This was just a small token of our

Hay, Barbaro - give an extra push on growing that hoof, but do it so that it grows out nice and uniform. Hope you get to enjoy some sun, seems like it's been raining forever here, though warm for November. In fact, the local TV weather forecaster said that we were the warmest spot in the United States this AM!(even warmer than Florida and CA). So y'all come up to Massachusetts and get warm.

    Happy Birthday, Alex!!

    ...and good morning, all!

I've been missing in "body" here this week but always with you all in spirit. Alex, what fun pictures, looks like you had a great time. I'm so happy to have been a tiny part of the great tribute Debra, Gloria, Betty, et al put together. Wishing you happy times, Alex, and many more to come. Thanks for all you've done to bring us all together in the name of Barbaro.

And our dear sweet Barbaro! A good-looking left hoof (thanks, Michael) and bigger digs, eh? Are you still officially in ICU? Praying that you continue to grow that hoof, heal that toe, and stand evenly on all 4 legs.

Is everyone hit by the storms OK--Dora? D'Anne (NC)? Others? How are our FOB animals--Felix? Maizie? I apologize for not having been able to keep up with posting, or read posts this week. Sending prayers for all FOB humans and animals in need of hope, help and healing.

A belated shoutout to Martita for her dance being mentioned on NPR by Dr. R! The danceman himself must have been impressed!

Good day to all--the sun is finally re-emerging just for Alex's bday! Off soon to continue making calls...

    Hi, FOB's!

Alex, so glad your party was a hit. Loved Wendy's pics. I hope today is a very special day for you. Thank you for all you have done, for all the kindness you show, for your infinite patience, for being the gracious host at Fair Hill...and just for being our WebDaddy. Give Chappy a hug from me (and one for Luke as well!). The sun came out for your birthday today...:)

Barbaro, if Michael is happy with your hoof, I'm happy with your hoof. The sun is shining very brightly today in Chester County so I KNOW you'll be outside grazing today. Those nasty storms have passed on.

FOB's - contact your Senators and the ever-present Senator Frist. We can do this. We can be the force that ends horse slaughter in this country once and for all. We will be heard. Period.

    Vote here is for Barbaro

ECLIPSE Award voters face a difficult decision in the coming weeks - is Barbaro or Bernardini the year's top 3-year-old male?

There are two schools of thought here, one being that Barbaro's contributions to the industry off the track far outweigh anything that Bernardini accomplished on it.

Then there is the argument that Bernardini, with six consecutive victories, eclipsed the 2006 campaign put forth by Barbaro.

It's a tough call. I can sympathize with each side's argument, but if I had a vote I'd go with Barbaro.

Barbaro's heart-warming tale has been so remarkable and so touching that it's virtually impossible to ignore what the gallant colt has meant to horse racing. He's brought attention to the sport that ordinarily it would not have gotten. And when you consider we're talking about an industry that can use all the positive publicity it can get, that's no small feat.

If you just look at the numbers, Bernardini comes out on top. He won five graded races this year to Barbaro's four, but Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby with such dominance it still resonates with viewers more than six months after the 6 length victory - the Derby's largest
winning margin since Assault won by eight lengths in 1946.

Barbaro was 6-0 at the time of his injury, better than Bernardini's 6-2 mark following a runner-up effort to probable Horse of the Year Invasor in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Barbaro beat a Derby field that, going in, was considered one of the strongest in recent memory.

While Bernardini's resume is impressive with victories in the Preakness, Jim Dandy, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup, the cold fact is the son of A.P. Indy didn't face much competition in the latter three races. The victory in the Gold Cup came against only three horses in what amounted to a glorified walk-over.

The purpose of this argument is not to knock Bernardini in any way. He is a talented colt who, regardless of the opposition, was good enough to rise up and beat older horses in the Gold Cup, one of the most storied races in the U.S. It's possible horse-racing fans were treated to the opportunity of watching two of the greatest 3-year-olds ever this year.

But let's face it. How many times does an unbeaten Kentucky Derby winner break down in the Preakness and then capture a nation's hearts with a battle for his life that is so courageous, it still commands headlines in sports sections not only in this country but around the world?

I don't have an official vote, but here's one check mark next to the name of Barbaro.

Sorry, in a hurry and had not read the article, I was just going to vote.

I started to read the article and the next sentence after what you posted is an obituary of a person, who happens to have the same name as my Papa (we are from the surrounding aread) and my heart dropped!

Sadly for that person, but the age was not the same as my Papa's (If something happened to Papa, I doubt this is the way I would find out).

Good morning all: I just talked with Senator Kyl's (Az) aide. I asked if he was getting a lot of calls. He said yes! I will re-post what Mary S. posted yesterday. And then please bombard him with calls!
    Daryl

I apologize that this is so long. It is an email I got from In Defense of Animals. I thought it would be good information for our calls tomorrow since they specifically name Senator Kyl of AZ as someone asking to be called in support of S1915, and also give his phone number.

While the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA) enjoys wide support among both the public and legislators, the Senate has yet to approve their version of the Act (S 1915). If approved, the AHSPA would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international transport of live horses or horseflesh for this purpose.
The Senate is just about to reconvene after a long recess, and we need to get this bill up for a vote before the session ends. An estimated 2,000 horses are trucked to slaughterhouses and brutally killed each week this bill awaits action in the Senate, so we cannot allow our leaders to stall any longer. In light of this, one of Senator Jon Kyl's (R-AZ) constituents called his office on Tuesday, November 14th urging that he introduce the bill. She was told that, if Senator Kyl receives a lot of calls in support of the AHSPA, he will do what he can to get it to the floor.
Please call Senator Jon Kyl's Washington office immediately at (202) 224-4521. Let him know that you support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act and urge him to get S. 1915 up for a vote or attach it as a rider to another bill before the Senate adjourns.

    This is interesting

I just did my first round calls. I spoke to a girl in Durbin's office that I have spoken to many times. We wound up discussing the young man that I had problems with yesterday.

Turns out, he's one of her many interns. She was telling me that they were just discussing him, and he isn't going to be working the phones. In her words "he lacks phone etiquette". She was pretty shocked when I told her how yesterday's call went.
Can't say I'll miss talking to that boy. He's actually worse than Katie, and you have to go some for me to say that. LOL

Posted by: D'Anne in NC at November 17, 2006 2:59 PM

Jo - Clayton is a clone - but not an exact replica - you have to mix DNA with either a male or female - it states it in the article about how Clayton was made. It is very interesting.

If Barbaro was cloned - that horse could not be able to race or be a sire/dame to a TB racer. Its in the rules.

Its a great idea - clone him like crazy so this world would be full of Barbaro's - what could be better!!!

Since it has been said that this has been the best year for 3 year olds in racing's recent history and we saw two of the best ever in one year, then perhaps the sports writers should consider another unpresedented move....... name them both. Barbaro and Bernardini together.

He won five graded races this year to Barbaro's four, but Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby with such dominance it still resonates with viewers more than six months after the 6 1/2 length victory - the Derby's largest winning margin since Assault won by eight lengths in 1946.

    Don't listen to her, Alex.

You are a very handsome, distinguished looking gentleman, and as for that "later in life bit", well, you have a long way to go before you have to worry about that, so you just keep right on riding. But PLEASE, never, ever let go of that neck strap. LOL

I agree about the people on this site they have true "empathy"...Empathy is a strong emotion. It can drive us to come alongside those who are in similar situations. It can cause us to care in a deeper way for those with whom we share a concern or a difficulty. This is a perfect example of why we FOB's are so close and why Alex is very important to us as he offers a site to keep us informed and together!!

Barbaro Team: May you have a beautiful day and a great weekend. God bless you and yours.

Prayers to all in need and the "furry" companions, too.

Alex: Have a very Happy Birthday............thanks again for all that you do.

That would be fun but I'd have to ride behind because it's been a long time since I've ridden a motorcycle...last time I did I was 15 years old and I had all the neighbors calling my mom and dad saying...You'd better get that girl in tow or she will turn out NO GOOD!!! So I lost my first motorcycle and haven't owned one since. Now horses are another story!!!

WOW!!! SEE, THE TIDE IS TURNING ...

YET ANOTHER IN FAVOR OF BARBARO OVER BERNARDINI ...

    - Bernardini will likely win the Eclipse for the top three-year old despite a growing sentiment in favor of Barbaro. But if he does, it will be without the vote of the Star-Telegram's Gary West, who writes: Bernardini's premature retirement represents a perversion of values and yet another insult to the sport and its fans.

    Greed of breeders shortchanging fans
    By Gary West
    Star-Telegram Staff Writer

    Betrayed again.

Like a flimflam man, Bernardini invited us to invest our emotional capital in him; he enticed us to hand over our hopeful savings. He made promises, sweet promises, about what we might expect in the future. And then he cut out, like a slick veteran of the grift.

After only eight races, Bernardini has been retired.

He may be named the year's champion 3-year-old, but he'll have to win the Eclipse Award without my vote. Bernardini's premature retirement represents a perversion of values and yet another insult to the sport and its fans.

With his easy victories in the Jim Dandy and Travers, Bernardini promised he could accomplish much, and he hinted he might, just might, possess greatness. But he never got there. And he never fully revealed his talents. Mollycoddled and babied into the Breeders' Cup Classic, he finished second as the even-money favorite.

To take a racehorse, a creature that for hundreds of years has been bred to do nothing but race, off the track before he has had the opportunity to fulfill his potential, before he's even full grown, is contemptible. I refuse to reward contemptible behavior, and so I refuse to vote for Bernardini.

Moreover, if horse owners are going to persist in retiring potential champions prematurely, then horse racing should reconsider its championship standards. Governments, teachers, parents and employers all use incentives to encourage desirable behavior; similarly, they employ penalties to discourage detrimental behavior.

And the premature retirement of its stars is detrimental to racing.

But, of course, the odious practice has become commonplace. Point Given, War Emblem, Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex - they all earned championship honors as 3-year-olds and then disappeared from the track to become stallions. War Chant, Fusaichi Pegasus and Empire Maker flashed inspiring potential as 3-year-olds, but they, too, quickly left the stage.

This perversity has its provenance, I believe, in 1967, when a handsome chestnut son of Raise A Native sold for a record $250,000 at auction. It was, for the time, a stunning price. And two years later, that handsome chestnut, named Majestic Prince, won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Until then, the foremost breeding operations, such as Calumet, Greentree, Claiborne and Darby Dan, had dominated racing's highest levels of competition. But Majestic Prince proved that a person with a bankroll could buy a potential superstar, and he showed breeders they could make a fortune by selling rather than racing. And so they soon began to focus not on the racetrack, but on a smaller oval, the sales ring.

From there, it was only a small step to realizing that a hot stallion could earn more, much more, than a racehorse. And Bernardini, no doubt, with his $100,000 stud fee, will earn more next year than he would have earned at the track.

This retirement is especially abhorrent because Bernardini's owner, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, is worth billions.

Many owners, of course, try to explain the premature retirement of their horses by citing the insurance costs of racing or the irresistible profits of breeding. Some say their horse "has nothing left to prove," which has the unmistakably hollow ring of nonsense, and the more creative tend to discover some compromising ailment, which always arouses suspicion.

But rationalizations soon appear silly when dressed up to look like explanations. And the true reason for most premature retirements remains greed, specifically the subordination of the sport, its fans and even the horse to profit.

But can profit be the motive here? Or could it be that the most prominent horse owner in the world is simply more focused on breeding than racing?

Neither attitude deserves encouragement. And so the flimflam artist doesn't deserve my vote.

    From Thoroughbred Times.com:

Lael Stables purchases Chilean Group 1 winner Eres Magica

International bloodstock agent John Fulton closed a deal on Thursday to purchase Chilean Group 1 winner Eres Magica on behalf of North American owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stables from owner-breeder Liliana Solari Falabella's Haras Don Alberto.

The Jacksons's homebred Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (G1). The three-year-old Dynaformer colt shattered his right hind leg in the Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 20 and developed life-threatening acute laminitis in his left hind foot in July. Barbaro continues to fight for his life at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

Eres Magica, a promising three-year-old filly by Stuka out of the Stagecraft (GB) mare Magica Aventura, scored a two-length victory over males in the 2,400-meter (11.93-furlong) Clasico El Ensayo (Chi-G1) (Chilean Derby), the first leg of the Chilean national Triple Crown, on November 1 over the Club Hipico de Santiago turf course.

Eres Magica won four of seven career starts in her native Chile, including three group victories. Fulton said Eres Magica will be shipped to Miami next week to begin her acclimation period before resuming her racing career in the United States.

A trainer has yet to be determined for Eres Magica. The Jacksons have horses in training with both Michael Matz, who conditioned Barbaro, and Barclay Tagg, trainer of Grade 1 winner Showing p.—Michael Burns

    Happy Birthday Alex,

I will drop you some Sam tomorrow before my hike. Finally some sunny fall weather on a Saturday!!

Now for my time honored tradition of the Friday Funnies.

Reasons Riding is Better Than Sex

You don't have to sneak your riding magazines into the house.

If you are having trouble with riding, it's perfectly acceptable to pay a professional to show you how to improve your technique.

The Ten Commandments don't say anything about riding.

If your trainer takes pictures or videotapes of you riding, you don't have to worry about them showing up on the Internet when you become famous.

Your horse won't keep asking questions about other horses you've ridden.

It's perfectly respectable to ride a horse you've never met before, just once, or, ride many horses in the same day, whether you know them or not.

When you see a really good horse, you don't have to feel guilty about imagining riding him.

If your regular horse isn't available, he/she won't object if you ride another horse.

Nobody will ever tell you that you can go blind if you ride by yourself.

When dealing with a riding trainer, you never have to wonder if they are really an undercover cop.

You don't have to go to a sleazy shop in a seedy neighborhood to buy riding stuff.

You can have a riding calendar on your wall at the office, tell riding jokes and invite co-workers to ride with you without getting sued for harassment.

There's no such thing as a Riding Transmitted Disease.

If you want to watch horses on television, you don't have to subscribe to a premium cable channel (but you might need a video tape).

You don't have to be a newlywed to plan a vacation primarily for the enjoyment of riding.

    Cheers

Since the Holidays kick off next week here in the States, I am submitting this for all to read and enjoy.

    The Christmas Horse,

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, but they sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day's end.

Crossly, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. "Why do you not at least dispose of "The Old One". She is no longer of use to you. It's been years since you've had foals from her. You should cut corners and save where you can. Why do you keep her anyway?"

The old man looked down as his worn boot scuffed at the barn floor and his arm stole defensively about the Old One's neck as he drew her to him and rubbed her gently behind the ears.

He replied softly, "We keep her because of love. Only because of love."

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley. So it was, that because of the leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smouldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One".

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire's fury. By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife. They thanked those who had come to their aid, and the old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as he clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana.

Brokenly he whispered, "We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us, therefore, climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared."

And so, he took her by the hand and helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his hand. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they looked up and gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty before them. Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy as he pulled his wife forward. There, beneath the tree, was their Christmas gift. Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping daintily through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares pressed uneasily against the "Old One" as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine.

And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of those she loved. Her body was brittle with years, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift - Because of love. Only Because of love.

    Cheers

CALLS TO SENATORS THIS MORNING (DC offices)

Sen. Frist--referred to voice mail, left message

Sen. Kit Bond: spoke with Whitney. She was very nice and receptive. She does not yet know how the Senator may vote. She does think the bill will get to the floor by the end of this year. She thinks it is still in committee.

Sen. Jim Talent: They have been getting lots of calls in support. The Senator is still assessing the legislation. His concern is protecting the horses, and avoiding loopholes that may lessen protections. His other major concern is the fact that major vet organizations are opposed to the ban--why are they, and can their concerns be addressed.

I told Sen. Talent's aide (forgot to get her name) that our group would be happy to fax some information on these topics to the DC office.

I AM AT WORK, CAN'T USE THE FAX FOR THIS, AND HAVE TO LEAVE SHORTLY FOR AN APPOINTMENT. COULD I IMPOSE ON SOMEONE TO FAX pertinent, well-written information addressing the Senator's concerns to Sen. Talent's office? I am very encourage that he wants to protect the horses.

The FOB's are sponsoring the Mo accident victims in honor of NBC and the work they do.

Each animal will have a picture card with the names and states of its sponsors on the back. Rosemary has a wonderful, unique stocking (which
you can see a photo of in the thread in the forum) which will be presented to NBC. It will have the photo cards and some small treats in it.

In addition, a letter from HSMO will be written to the staff of NBC stating that FOB's sponsored the accident horses for Christmas in honor of the staff. The letter will be framed and given along with the Christmas Stocking by Dr. Sweeney to the staff.

Sponsoring for Christmas is a one time thing. They have preset amounts, the lowest being $25.00, but they also have an "other" where you can fill in your own amount.

If you decide to sponsor, after you have chosen and sponsored your horse(s), hit the contact us button on HSMO and send them a message stating that you are sponsoring in honor of NBC for Christmas. Then go back to the thread and tell Rosemary who you sponsored, as well as how you would like your name and state to read on the card.

That's all there is to it.

HE IS GOING TO VOTE FOR BARBARO. He also didn't like the fact that Bernardini was retired so early in his career for no good reason.

I Received This From Senator Ben Nelson Of Nebraska This Morning. He Sort Of Hedged A Bit I Feel But Perhaps He Will Join Our Team. I Have Asked Him To Co-Sponsor The Bill But He Did Not Respond To That. He Will Hear From Me Again And Again On This Matter. He Could Make A Difference For Our 4 Legged Friends In This Matter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank you for contacting me regarding proposals to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. I appreciated hearing your thoughts on this matter.

How to handle the tens of thousands of elderly and unwanted horses is an emotionally charged issue. While horses are not raised for consumption in the United States, processing is often seen as the most viable method for the disposition of horses who are infirm or no longer serviceable. However, I appreciate your concerns that this is not a humane option, and America should not slaughter its horses for the dinner plates of Europe and Asia. The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, S. 1915, has been introduced to permanently prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption. This legislation has been referred to the Senate
Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, of which I am a member. I will keep your thoughts in mind as we proceed with our work in the Committee.

Thank you again for contacting me with your comments. The legislative process will only work with the input of concerned citizens, and I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts
    and ideas.

    Sincerely,

    Ben Nelson
    U.S. Senator

I just read the article about the vote for Barbaro.

I thought it would be a tough choice between Barbaro and Bernardini, and I do think the people who vote will likely pick Bernardini, by dint of his consecutive Grade One victories and the Jockey Club Gold Cup, where he faced older horses. (Albeit, only two.)

But the writer reminded me once again what courage really is and what stamina actually means. He reminded me what qualities there must be to transcend horse racing altogether, to lift it into the regard of the whole world.

I don't have a vote, either, but my nonvote goes to Barbaro.

If I am correct, they all have at least two sponsors. Pick any horse(s) from the list to sponsor. They can all use the help.

To let HSMO know that you have sponsored, after you fill out the form for sponsoring, look in the upper right hand corner of the page. Hit the contact us you will see there.

It opens a web form contact, Tell them which horses you sponsored, and that you are sponsoring In Honor of NBC for Christmas. Then tell Rosemary on the thread.

I just called Senator Kyl's office and spoke with a nice aide. It only took a couple of seconds. Yay!

I am reposting Mary's and Daryl's post from earlier today:

Senate is not on Cspan today

Yesterday the senators recessed, for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Will return December 2, I think was said.
They worked for what, three-days. We don’t want to over work them! They just got back from a two-week fall break.

Per Frist calendar Tuesday bill HR 5385, Wednesday bill HR 5384, Thursday the US India Nuclear cooperation bill.
We know the only thing got to the floor was India’s bill. Didn’t see if it was passed or not.

Someone ask today, why the Vet’s are opposed to the bill? Looked all day, thought I had saved that. The vet who perjury herself, in the hearing of HR 503. Anyone have that?

Faxed Sen. Jon Kyl a nice letter, along with Frist. Email Sen. Burns and Sen. Baucus. Still fighting the fight.

Alex hope you had a great birthday!

    Debbie L.A.,

The US-India Nuclear Deal did indeed pass. The next thing on the agenda isthe Ag bill HR5384, with a couple of senators wanting to make amendments before it goes to the floor for a vote.

They are resuming work on Monday 04 Dec, and will take up HR5384, and vote on it around 5pm on Tuesday 05 Dec.

It must be REALLY hard to put in as many working days as they do--and get paid so much for not doing anything but quorum calls.

FOB's I think we are all in the wrong businesses.

    Good afternoon all:
I just spoke with a nice lady in Senator Talent's office. I addressed the senator's concern about the vet organizations being against the ban! I believe this is a legitimate concern. It must be addressed in a positive factual way. I have requested a meeting with Senator Talent. The nice lady is going to see what she can do. Please call Senator Talent's number and keep up the pressure. I am really going to push for a meeting and if successful any FOB is invited. The aide tried to discourage a meeting in the beginning because A. She did not think the bill has a chance to get to a vote and B. the senator was defeated in the election. I explained B by saying should S. 1915 go to vote by the end of the year, he votes. She agreed. I also said there was conflicting information on whether it gets to a vote or not. I told her I don't care what I hear. If there's a pin hole of a chance we are crawling through. We can't give up! Barbaro wouldn't!
See the post by Susan E. at 5:18
    Senator Talent (Mo) - 202-224-6154
But here's the Kansas City number. This is the lady who is trying to help. Let's help her help us! Call, call and ask for a meeting!

She's a friend because I thanked her for the K.C. Royals beating the Detroit Tigers at the end of the season alowwing my Minnesota Twins to win the division title. We had a good laugh!

I think it is good news that the US-India Nuclear Deal was voted on, and the Ag bill is up first on Dec 4. I hope and pray that Sen Landrieu finds a way to attach S1915 to it so we all can watch CSPAN on Dec 5 and cheer for the passage.

Happy Friday everyone and Happy Birthday Alex!

I've been gone this whole week and just now trying to catch up on everything, no time to read any posts right now but will take time to make the calls to my senators.

    Socorro, have a safe trip!

I asked colleagues of mine earlier this week scattered throughout the country to call their individual senators and have heard from some of them. So, little by litte, more calls are being made and more states covered.

Will try to read some posts later this afternoon and tonight. But for now must do some work. This darn work thing. It gets in the way of what's really important.....Barbaro and all the horses. I somehow made it through the week, albiet barely, without my daily Barbaro fix. It was difficult, believe me.

Take care everyone and prayers to all the FOB's.

Just received this from Humane Activist Pamphlet:

Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) reliable champion of animal welfare legislation in Congress. He's a cosponsor of legislation to end the slaughter of horses for human consumption, protect pets, etc.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg. (D-NJ) has sponsored, cosponsored every pro-animal bill that has come before the Senate since he was elected...

Said Sen. Conrad Burns is one of the worse enemies of animals, etc.

So, we all as one...continue fighting..for Barbaro, for his brothers and sisters...and get this bill passed..

Posted by: JOAN ROYA at November 17, 2006 8:43 PM

I only had a minute to check-in. Is it really true? They've gone until Dec. 4th? What the hell kind of job is that - work a couple of days and recess as our horses are dying - I'm speechless. Is it true? What is our plan now?

Also from the pamphlet: Texas oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens has lent his powerful voice on behalf of horses killed in America for human consumption. Pickens and his wife, Madeleine Pickens has spearheaded trying to get the bill passed. Quote: He let the legislators know the slaugher of America's horses for foreign dinner plates is a "Black eye on our state in Texas and nation that demands action">

No we don't stop, keep calling, Faxing and emailing.

The aides work harder than the senators.

If our bill is still in the committee? Would it not help to call the committee members, and ask why they can not get the bill out, and on to the floor for a vote.

I was told yesterday, I could call anyone I wish to call.

Are we still to say no changes to the bill?

    Is it still in committee?

The two aides in Alabama know my voice by now!

GEE think I will go call Katie at Burns office.

I sickens me too. In fact, I told Sen. Nelson's aide that very thing. He said "you're preaching to the choir here - we (including Senator Nelson) are doing what we can to get it scheduled". When I asked the likelihood of that happening, he said it was impossible to predict. He said it depends on how the parties will be able to work together. He said, if not, then it has to be worked on next year. NEXT YEAR????? I don't want to hear that.

The fact that the senators are in recess does not mean that they are not working. Many of them will continue to work through much of the recess, even though there is no open session. And most of the work that they do is not done in the meeting rooms even when they are in session, so if it looks like they just sit around and do roll call votes, etc. -- basically do nothing -- I really don't think that is an accurate impression of their workday. It definitely is an impression that is easy to get by watching C-SPAN, though!

Anyway, yes, our plan is to make our phone calls, still. Everyone should be calling Senator Frist and their own two senators. I know it may not seem like enough, because we are used to making lots more calls, but it is what Shelley was advised that we should do. So, I guess, beyond that, the most useful thing we can do is keep spreading the word through flyers, etc., and asking other people to make those three phone calls, too. The more people, the better!

I don't know where Shelley is today, and my email is down, so I can't check. Socorro is flying to the US right now. So this is a day when we need to do without their guidance. I know we all miss them!

    ### For those who pray

I have been feeling a special need for prayer for S1915 today.

We are up against a group of five or six senators, our own secretary of agriculture, two lobbyists and a powerful Washington law firm. This group will alledgedly do what it takes to kill S1915 and continue horse slaughter in the US. Or I have read that they will.

Please pray especially hard that the Lord will work his wonders and defeat their evil machinations. They would probably scoff at our prayers. They scoffed at Samson until the building started to fall.

I have read that there is a boatload of special interest money involved in this bill and some people will do anything for money. We are up against some real power here. But the biggest power of all is God.
There is a verse in the Bible that says that if God is with me, who can be against me?
So I am asking for unceasing prayer for 1915 to pass. Thank you, and bless you all. BB

The Big Bay One got to go out to graze with Michael. How lucky are you, huh? Hope you behaved yourself and didn't kick up your heels like Miss Round Pond!

I'm glad the read that Fondmort seems to be holding his own. Such a handsome fella!

I'm celebrating Alex's birthday here in Maine with a microbrew. Cheers, Alex and thank you once again for all that you do for us.

Hi All: I received some great news today that I wanted to share with you. My trainer had my baby Walk(Just a Walk in the Park) jog next to the barn today. He was 100% sound. The trainer wished he could run him tomorrow as he looked that good. Walk will be visiting Dr. R on November 19th with his MRI scheduled for the 20th. Hopefully, the results will confirm it. If all goes well, he will be making his 4 yr old debut in 2007. If he's as good as he was before he got hurt I'm sure you are going to see something special. I'm just so happy, I was crying as I was reading the email. Walk is extremely special and gifted and he needs to strut his stuff. Anyway, thanks for all the prayers for him. They seemed to have worked.

Now for my little Bobby: Your friend will be visiting you again soon. Grab his karma my sweet one. Let his healing powers come to you. Baby steps, my friend, lead the way home.

Hiya, Bobbey! I've missed reading about your progress all this week while I was out of town, sweet prince. Sounds like you have a larger stall now, which should make getting up and lying down easier for you. It was a treat to read the 11/14 news from NBC. I hope you had a great day grazing today. Tomorrow is your "splish/splash" day, enjoy! Kita and I shall walk down to the borough post office on Sat. to mail your Thanksgiving card. Hi Sally: Walk's full name is Just a Walk in the Park. He is a 3 yr old Ecton Park colt. He made his debut and broke his maiden impressively as a 2 yr old. We were offered over a million dollars for him but turned it down. He ran in the Huntington Stakes and bucked shins coming in third. We laid him up until 2006 where he made his return in the Gilded Time Stake coming in second. He must have gotten hurt again then as he developed a hike every time he jogged. We sent him to Dr. R who spent a lot of time with him and found that he had a sprained tendon in his foot and we were told to rest him until the Spring and see what happens then. As you can imagine, this is now great news. We still plan on resting him until the Spring and he will be shipping out to Ocala after he is done with Dr. R. He will not resume training until he returns to us sometime in March or April. His expected debut should be sometime in the summer of 2007. Thanks for the well wishes. Lorraine

    Susan E.
I would love to meet you and talk with a senator. But I just got off the phone with Senator Talent's aide. She said she talked with his top aide on S. 1915 and that it will NOT BE INTRODUCED THIS SESSION! She said there are too many other issues and time is short. And because Sen. Talent was defeated in the last election he could not help in this issue. Now understand I don't buy into any negative news: NEVER! I have heard conflicting information all this week and none of it means anything. The only thing that matters is there is hope. If the opening is the size of a pinhole, we crawl through the pinhole. I'm not giving up on Talent. Monday I'll call his St. Louis office. And I am trying to arrange meetings with other senators as well. Today I went to Senator Norm Coleman's office in St. Paul. Had a great meeting with an aide. Senator Coleman has not voiced his position on S. 1915 as of yet. But he has voted in favor of horse protection legislation in the past. I requested a meeting with him, either in Minnesota or Washington. Monday I will request additional meeting with key senators.
I'm for trying anything (of course being professional and with class) to achieve the
impossible. No one is going to tell me the bill will not be introduced while the senators still have sessions this year and that the "senator can't help." You have a bill that is waiting to be introduced and you are still on the payroll. Do your job! And you can start by listening to your constituents. She also said they are cleaning out their desks and other items so the aides are busy. As Steve Martin used to say, "Well excuuuuuuuuse me!" Your senator got defeated so everyone is taking their ball and going home? How about the fact there is still work to be done and you still work for us until the end of the year? I'm tired of lame brain, weak excuses. Go ahead clean out your desks while 2000 horses die every week. I still think it would be a great idea to take that 17 hands, 1100 lb. powerpack into the senate chambers for a display of power, passion and spirit! Ok, so I'm ranting! We all work so hard on this and then get brush-offs! Fine! For me it's only more motivating. Anyone reading this with information about senators that need to be contacted, let me know! I have a full tank of gas! And I'm not talking about my car!
    LOL to the FOBs

Today I learned something that might interest you all...at least I thought it was pretty cool.

I took my lab, Zeke, back to his ortho doc today, who did his surgery when he broke his leg. Now, both my dogs have had surgery by this doc, and we have been seeing her for 4 years. But today, they were very busy, and put me in her personal office. While Zeke and I were waiting for her to come in, I started reading her many, many diplomas hanging on the walls. There was one on the wall from UPenn. When she came in, she did her exam on Zeke, checked his leg, and called her assistant to come get him for his xray (Dr. Hayes weighs in at about 80lbs soaking wet...she's tiny, and Zeke is a strapping 130)
I asked her if she went to UPenn. She had. I asked her if she knew who Barbaro was. She had'nt. I explained to her the whole story; his whole "stardom" story. Then I mentioned his Dr. She say's " Oh, I know him!!!" I asked if she and Dr. R were collegues, associated somehow, and she say's " Oh, No, I studied under him!!! (No visuals, here, Pammie!!!)
She went on to tell me that she was a student of his during her 3rd year, back in 1987, and that he was brilliant, yet incredibly difficult and scary if you were his student. She said he has an aura about him of knowledge and self-confidence that she has never since experienced. She said, although it was a grueling study, she learned alot from him. I was so intrigued by all of this, that I just wanted to keep talking to her. I never, ever, would have guessed!!! So, as it turns out, Zeke and Barbaro's storys continue to intertwine in the most bizarre fashion!!! By the way, Zeke's doctors' name is Andrea Hayes. She's an orthopedic surgeon who lives in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, and she practices at two locations that I know of. One is in Western Springs, the other is Brookfield, ILLINOIs.

Sorry for the long post...I just had to let ya'll know. I was so excited to learn that Zeke's doctor, once upon a time, rubbed elbows with DR. R

    Cool.

Therese: Have had experiences with 3 different vets who studied under Dr. Dean - The consensus was that he was very tough, expected a lot, was a bit of a hard a** but someone who left an impression for a lifetime and was always professional and top notch....Someone who kept some distance from most patients and students...Yet each was convinced he is deeply committed to and truly loves Barbaro...They each wondered if Bobby had changed Dr. Dean's style....

Julie L-don't give up on having a horse. It was my dream every Christmas and birthday to get a horse, never happened. I'm now 50, and for just under 2 years have gotten to look out my window and see the most incredible Polish Arabian out there. He's a gem-and looks a whole lot like Mr Barbaro by the way. When my son said he was getting one of the horses from the horse therapy program he works with, I was scared and excited at the same time. I'd never gotten to be around horses, and with my son being 22, and the horse housed on my property, I knew there was a lot of horse care in store for me in the future. But I'll tell you what, there is no creature on earth like a horse. This has been a dream come true for me. I started taking riding lessons, and still am taking them because I've found you never learn enough. Owning a horse, ok, my son sharing ownership of his horse with me, is an experience I just can't describe. And it came later in my life than most. But there is no feeling that compares to going out to the pasture and having him come over to greet me, and look me in the eyes as if he's saying "so tell me, how was your day today??" This guy is one in a million, I know that. The farrier does 70 horses, and he's her favorite. Everyone loves this guy. He's special, but he needed to be for my sake! Wonderful wonderful creatures. They are wonderful, and maybe your time will come. When and if it does, enjoy. It's the ride of your life!
A word on Woody, she continues to absolutely beat the odds. She is still frisky, energetic, loves romping in the pasture, ran down the stairs today faster than I could. The 3 months the vet gave her are just about gone, so I'm thinking she has some special powers helping her out. thanks again all for your thoughts and prayers for her. They seem to be working!!

Chunky my sweet little pregnant Pony - Mommie loves you - yes you were bad to run off with that hoodlum but these things happen and she knows that. She was a young girl herself. She understands that lust gets in the way of love. I'm sure if you promise her to behave after Chunkette is born she will let you keep your baby. At least until she is trained to be a good pony. If someone loving comes along and wants to take her to a good home you have to understand. But if you are a really good girl, she may let you keep your baby. I'm voting on keeping the baby - but you will have to do your part - get a job with a cart - carrying around kids or whatever so they have a good time - make some money to help support the baby - she will let you keep Chunkette!

    Hello Barbaro,

I'm so happy that you got to go grazing today! Ahhhh, the fresh air! I'll bet it felt so good to get out for awhile.

And now you get to cuddle up with your favorite blanket and dream the most amazing, sweet dreams. The stars will shine down on you, lighting the way to your memories of family and friends. Tender times of love.

Let the healing continue through the night and strength carry you through your day tomorrow. I'll be here in the morning to check your update. But you know my heart is with you always.

Now cuddle up and close your eyes. Sleep well Barbaro. Feel the love, live your dreams, as sweet as they are! Good night Honey. I love you. XXOO

Chunky - you need to change that and fast - what kind of name is that for a baby pony? What about Trigger for a boy and Sweetie Pie or Sugar for a girl?? What is the hoodlum's name? Maybe a combination of Chunky and his name. Maybe a name in honor of Barbaro that brought your mommie to all of us. Barbie if its a girl or Little B if its a boy?

Punky - wasn't there a show on TV a while back called Punky Brewster? She was cute but Punky for a pony? I think you need to put your hoof down on Punky!!

No Chunky Bubba - thats worse than than Punky! OK you were a bad girl - so lets come up with some bad girl names - Hot to Trot, you could call the baby hottie or trottie - no thats not good. Let try Out for a Good time - you could call the baby Goody, no thats doesn't work, Lil Bitch - nope doesn't work with the kids, Love Baby - that has possibilites, or Lust Baby, naw - not good for the kids, Love Baby is the only thing I can think of. Wild and Wonderful?? In the Heat of the moment?? Wild night out? ok - I'm going over the edge here. Let me think about this and I'll get back to you. I'm sure there is a perfect name out there for this baby!!! XXOO and SCRATCHIES.

Thank you Karen. Walk is really something special and we just love him so much. I don't know how to explain it. He just has that look in his eye. He tries so hard and gives everything he has every time he races. That's why we were amazed when he ran in the Huntington that he did as well as he did. He just missed second and he really didn't lose by much. He had bucked shins on both front legs and he just kept on going trying to win. I can't even imagine the pain he must have been in. Like one of my partners always says, this horse would run through a wall for us. That is why we are so glad we turned down the million. Yeah it was alot alot of money but we are glad we turned it down because he is our baby and maybe someone else might not have taken care of him the way we do and his injuries might have been alot more serious.

Walk is the first horse I actually bought. That's why he's my baby boy. We were originally in the claiming game but then we decided just to buy them outright. I personally have two other horses in this partnership both 2 yr olds. Ambling Rose who made her debut on Election Day and did outstanding and Glide and Seek who will be making his debut as a 3 yr old in 2007. There are other horses in the stable that I do not own. Distant Bells who is a gorgeous three year old filly and Honest Appeal also three. The name of the stable is Fantasy Lane and they are a great bunch of people who genuinely love our horses. One of my partners is an attorney for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. She has taken practically all of the horses we have retired.

I also am partners on another filly with Karakorum racing. Her name is Karakorum Elektra. She should be making her debut shortly.

I originally got into this as a 20th wedding anniversary present for my husband. Now I can't stop buying them. It's fun and I love them. They are just like overgrown dogs. The trainer is always yelling at us. He tells us if we want a pet, buy a dog; but then he laughs because our horses get to him too and deep down we know he loves them. Anyway, that's my story. Sorry to be so long winded but I love talking about my babies. Take care

Back to slaughterhouses and the paranoia surrounding them by the owners... Today on Terry Gross' Fresh Air program she interviewed Greg Kinnear, who is starring in the new movie, "Fast Food Nation". Inasmuch as it is a fictionalized story of the fast food industry, the filmmakers needed to use realistic footage for the movie. According to Kinnear, trying to find a slaughterhouse here in the U.S. which would allow outsiders was virtually impossible, and the whole industry is very paranoid. The filmmakers had to go to Mexico to find a slaughterhouse which would allow them to film, and of course Kinnear said it was a truly horrible place.

This paranoia exists not only with the horse slaughterhouses, but also the livestock. I know that Temple Grandin had a very hard time gaining access and winning respect with her program to calm the cattle on the way in. These industries are extremely defensive and with good reason.

I understand Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa is the one who wants to put a hold on the anti-slaughter bill, and that confirms everything I ever thought of him. He and Conrad Burns...

Rest after your outing today and dream of walking without splints or boots very soon. Snuggle into your straw and strengthen your leg and grow that hoof wall. Shelley,
A new study just came out about breast cancer. It was done with thousands of women, those who ate red meat more than once a day opposed to those who ate it maybe once a week. I can't remember all the facts but basically those who had a regular diet of red meat had a much higher incidence of breast cancer.

All these things help our cause little by little. Red meat is already suspect for heart disease and all sorts of diseases. So, it is no wonder that the slaughter houses are paranoid. I can't see Americans giving up their steak or the Belgians their horsemeat real soon but when studies like this come out people may take more cautions and turn to chicken, fish, tofu, etc. Just another way of looking at the problem!

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at November 18, 2006 4:35 AM

Okay, just saw Daryl's post. Lovely. Two completely different answers from the same LAME DUCK senator on the same day.

CALLING ALL SENATORS AND AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY PEOPLE: LISTEN UP AND LISTEN GOOD

We are NOT going away. The longer you delay and play your games, the stronger, more informed, and more numerous WE get. We are teaching people about horse slaughter every day, and guess what? They don't like it and they don't want it here.

And guess what else? Many people opposed to horse slaughter are getting turned off by the entire slaughter industry. It's called being mad and having enough. Is this really a good thing for YOU from an economic and PR standpoint?? I think not. We have long memories, faxes, DSL, and lots of phone minutes, and we're not afraid to use them.

So stop delaying. Get this bill out on the floor and get it passed. The longer you delay, the worse you look. And most of you will try to run for office again, won't you??

Richard Linkletter, the director of "Fast Food Nation", was on the Stephen Colbert show tonight. When Colbert asked him (in the way only he can) what was wrong with the fast food nation we have, the first thing Linkletter said was, "Beside the fact that it is cruel and inhumane to animals...".

I know that some of the pro-slaughter lobby is terrified that we will wake up and smell the stench of their dirty little secrets and that if the horse anti-slaughter bill passes it will somehow effect the cattle and other livestock industry. For that reason, as much merit as there is to connect animal abuse everywhere, I know we need to disconnect these two industries when we push for this bill. However, I do think this accounts for much of the heavyweight lobbying on the other side. Imagine how the livestock industry is looking forward to this new movie...

It looks to me like they're trying hard to avoid letting it out of committee, with the excuse that there just isn't enough time. This is one time when we must pray for another miracle.

Re Harry Aleo and Greg Gilchrist horses, here's a bit of news on VICARINO, the 2 year old colt who is so fun to watch:

"Because of a low blood count, Vicarino will miss Saturday's Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue at Hollywood Park. Trainer Greg Gilchrist said he'll point Vicarino to the Winners Foundation Stakes on Dec. 2 at Bay Meadows."

Before that time, however, QUITE A RUSH, Harry's 2 year old filly who made such a splash at GGF on Fog's memorial day, will be racing Wednesday, Nov. 22, Race 3, at Bay Meadows. Also in the same race will be another Aleo 2 year old filly, ON DUTY, in her second race.

QUITE A RUSH will be ridden by Russell Baze, Fog's jockey, who is only 16 wins behind Laffit Pincay's all time record of 9,530 wins.

Good morning, Alex, Shelley and the early-risers! It's a gorgeous, blue skied and sunny morning here. Did anyone see the Leonids last night? We went out for a while but only saw a few weak ones...nothing like the Orionids last months.
