    Barbaro Updates: 137

    updates are now here.

Update 1067: I spoke to Peter Brette earlier this evening who had heard from Michael who visited Barbaro this afternoon. Michael had Barbaro outside. It was another upbeat report.

Update 1066: A thorough article on the problems Hollywood Park is having with its Cushion Track :Track maintenance problems persist. It is refreshing to see how open they are about the problems they are having and how they believe the problems are attributed to their own efforts at maintaining the track, rather than the product itself. Lets hope they move up the steep learning curve quickly. I was told this morning the track was in good shape for training.

Update 1065: A wonderful article from the Baltimore Sun celebrating Barbaro's six months of recovery: Still legging out life as long shot. It includes the following excerpts:

When the demands that come with owning Barbaro become too much, Gretchen Jackson simply goes to see her horse.

"I go there and just sit down in the bedding in his stall and talk to him," she said last week. "He's a very gentle stallion. He allows me to be able to do that, and I find it very relaxing. I look at those legs and think about what they were able to do, to think how they carried him to victory in the Kentucky Derby."

    and

"He bit me accidentally one day. I know it was an accident. He was as surprised by it as I was. He tried to put his head on my chest to say he's sorry."

McCafferty paused and smiled a little sheepishly.

"People say, 'What is she talking about?' But it was in his eyes. It was, 'Oh my gosh, I didn't mean it.' ... He's just a cool horse with a unique personality."

    and

As for today, on the six-month anniversary of Barbaro's arrival at New Bolton, Jackson said nothing special is planned.

"It's the same as any other day," she said. "We're all just going to keep plugging along."

...but of course Edgar surprised everyone with a visit!

Update 1064: Mrs. Jackson just called to thank everyone for your continued efforts to move the anti-slaughter bill forward.

I did ask her about Edgar's visit. She mentioned that when she was with Edgar visiting Barbaro Barbaro was lying down, feet forward eating the grass Mrs. Jackson brought along. Edgar was able to sit down next to Barbaro and talk to him. In Mrs. Jackson's words ... he loves the horse, its a true relationship!

Update 1063: Its six months since the Preakness, six months of recovery, and Barbaro had a special visitor this morning ... Edgar Prado. I believe this was Edgar's fourth visit, and Edgar actually provided me with this morning's update. Edgar noted Barbaro had put on a little weight (since his last visit), had a bright eye, and was actually trying to bite him a little! Edgar then waited around to meet with Mrs. Jackson, who visited Barbaro with cut grass etc. Barbaro was more tranquil during that visit (according to Edgar). I actually drove over to New Bolton to meet Edgar. He was with his wife Lillian and son Luis. He was very relaxed and happy to see Barbaro.

Update 1062: The early update is again from Michael's visit last night (sunday 6 pm visit). Michael was again positive in his assessment of Barbaro when he visited. I saw Michael as I was finishing up my first set and coming off the track.

It is a nice crisp morning this morning. As I was coming out on my first set I noticed a heron wanting to share the pond, adjacent to the horsepath I use, with the many geese. Of course this created quite a lot of noise. Red Aspen is scheduled to work after the break. She is pointing for a stakes race at Laurel this coming weekend.

Update 1061: The Hollywood meet did race sunday after problems with the track were addressed saturday morning: Hollywood Races Sunday After Addressing Cushion Track Complaints. Lets hope this is a problem that is resolved. The Fair Hill Tapeta track should be in place within the next couple of weeks, especially if we have some dry weather.

Russell Baze is now only eleven winners shy of Laffitt Pincay's all time mark of 9,530 winners: Baze Teams With Hollendorfer for Triple. Barring accidents I am guessing Baze will eclipse the record before I gallop my first horse on the Tapeta surface!

We had a Fair Hill visitor on saturday, although I confess she did not visit the barn. This is her report (posted in Barbaro Updates: 136 timestamp 5:10 am):

I spent a magical morning at Fair Hill Training Center Saturday. (Sally, the manager and Alex were both so patient and helpful with emailing me regarding a possible visit). As I was driving to the Center during a crimson sunrise, I drove past woodlands, ponds with geese, meadows, heard morning birdsong....and that was only the beginning. As I arrived and looked down the hill in the early morning light, I could see two horses and riders on the track for their morning workout. I walked down towards the track and found a nice spot to absorb the incredible privelege of this experience. This spot happened to be where each set entered the track from their barns. I was so close, I could look into the horses' eyes as they walked within a foot of me, I could hear the horses breathing, their hooves hitting the plush deep cushion of dirt track and I even had the privelege of hearing the riders talk with their mounts. I was struck by the beauty of these magnificent creatures...their athleticism, unique personalities and amazing training. Each rider greeted me with 'Good Morning' despite their busy workday and it was easy to discern their proficiency and how incredibly tuned into their mount each rider was. It was like watching the horse and rider move smoothly as one. It was so amazing to be so welcomed and able to get so close to such incredibly talented horses and people. One trainer asked me if I was cold because it was a bit colder than it had been recently. My honest answer was "I am too awestruck to be cold". I stayed until the track equipment came out to groom the track after the morning workouts were over and it seemed like I was there five minutes at most. I bet it sounds like I am totally enamored...I will simply have to go back again soon before I suffer withdrawl!

I was spotted on TV in Oklahoma (posted in Barbaro Updates: 136 timestamp 4:36 am):

Hey, Alex! Our local ABC affiliate just ran an anti-h/s story. They mentioned Barbaro, and you, Alex, were interviewed.

Afterwards, they ran the 2 OK senators' numbers for people to contact. Fantastic!

I am not sure when the Barbaro update will be this morning, but hope it will be before 9 am.

Hoping for ACN! Rock on, Sweet Prince!

PLEASE CALL AND FAX YOUR SENATORS. Barbaro and the horses need us to do so.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans!

    (Morning, Jo! Welcome, nazni!)

An afternoon graze with Peter and I'm certain you had other visitors, too. You ARE one special horse!

I see Shelley has posted a recess strategy to follow - I'll be calling and emailing as I'm baking! And I don't leave the house on Black Friday (retail term for the day after Thanksgiving!) so I can do the same that day. And, I have been toying with writing a letter to the editor to the major newspapers in this state (all 3 of them LOL!) because we are so far off the beaten path that I'm certain horse slaughter is not a known fact here in Maine.

Good Monday Morning Bobby, Alex and fellow FsOB

Thank you Shelley A for pointing us in the right direction with this new strategy. I have already left messages on ans. machines and will call back so speak to an aide when I leave work.

Is anyone going to reveal who the Saturday visitor to Fair Hill is? The visitor certainly has a way with words and the description of Fair Hills was so enjoyable to read.

    FsOB:
From Maid M: This week, Thanksgiving notwithstanding, is all about quick (or sudden)
    changes, alterations, or unexpected
modifications in packaging that could initially give pause, since it's not what/how/the way you thought it would be. Never mind. Down the line (mid-Dec)these shifts could well end up fast-tracking a goal, ambition, objective.

    With this in mind:

    REPOST, ShelleyA

    ***** STRATEGY FOR THANKSGIVING RECESS*******

We were unable to get our bill to the floor before the recess and, as of now, it doesn’t look like it will be attached to the Agriculture Appropriations Bill.

This is NOT acceptable and we have been asked to raise a public outcry by flooding the phone lines

It’s final crunch time and we’ve been asked to remain focused for the next two weeks.

Contact these Senators to ask for action on The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act in any vehicle before adjournment.

Bill Frist = phone @ office in Nashville- 615-352-9411
Mitch McConnell = phone @ office in Louisville -502-582-6304
Trent Lott = phone @ office in Jackson - 601-965-4644
Harry Reid = phone @ office in Las Vegas - 702-388-5020

Also encourage and thank our two sponsors for their determination to get the bill passed -

Mary Landrieu = phone @ office in New Orleans - 504-589-2427
John Ensign = phone @ office in Las Vegas - 702-388-6605

Please call the above local offices in addition to the DC offices.

Also, contact your own senators both locally and in DC.

It is urgent that we get as much support as possible in the final weeks of our mission. I’ve got to be honest with you guys, it’s not looking great!!!

PLEASE…..BE POLITE BUT BE FIRM. LET THEM KNOW HOW STRONGLY WE FEEL ABOUT THIS!!! WE MUST PUSH ON.

Everyone please take time to read ShelleyA's post on new strategy for Thanksgiving Recess.
We now have new people to call, fax and email. Plus continue with your home state's senators as well. We have to bombard these senators with our wishes. This is a very important two week period.
Barbaro has held the course for six months now, we can hold our course for two more weeks.
    ####
Prayers for Marky and her dad, Susan E.'s friend Sharon, Erin, Mike Rea, Linda H., FOB's family and friends and furry ones.

This is the last week to sponsor a MO accident horse in honor of the NBC staff for Christmas.
It's easy to do and will help those poor, precious horses have a better life. Just go to www.hsmo.org and click on Horse Heroes. After you sponsor or donate to the general fund, email me at jroe19@adelphia.net and tell me how you want your name and state on the horse's picture card. Cards and goodies will go into a special stocking for presentation to NBC staff by Dr. Sweeney and a framed thank you acknowledging FOBs from HSMO will also be presented. Thank you to all of you who have most generously given to these horses for the NBC staff during this most special time of year. You are all simply amazing!!

Thank you always Alex for your many kindnesses to us.

You have achieved so much in the past six months for yourself and for other horses; in some mysterious way, I believe that you know it, sweet prince. May this Monday be a sun-filled one with quality grazing time for you. Please accept a kiss from Ms. Mocha if she offers one, OK? Thanks so much for the link to the fantastic article in the Baltimore Sun. It's so encouraging to read. I do hope when they think Bobby is able they will consider sending him to a warmer climate where he can continue to graze and feel the sun on his back and the breeze of fresh air. I'm guessing that being stall bound for a race horse is somewhat difficult. But - of course the people in charge know what's best.

JANICE, I am grateful to the Baltimore Sun. They have always run very good articles about Barbaro through it all and have always had an upbeat tone.

I agreed with you from the get-go about B going down to Florida. No doubt there'd be more good time outside for him to enjoy than he'll have up here in the winter, but the timing just isn't right. I can't see Dr. R letting him go anytime soon.. He's still in the middle of it...

Whatever's best for him - we love you Barbaro!

I wish we had time to get a petition of millions of names...

I am so proud of Barbaro and so proud of the Fans of Barbaro...We speak as one for the ones who cannot speak for themselves...

Good morning Barbaro, have a wonderful day of growing your hoof!
Special thanks to JO (UK) for some of the quotes about article for Dessie. Wow, did the writer capture the spirit of marveling at special moments watching horses run. Have felt those moments and thanked God for the opportunity to witness--spiritual experience that lasts--Personal Ensign in the BC, Tiznow in the BC Classic, John Henry whenever he ran, and of course the great Affirmed/Alydar Triple Crown races, especially the Belmont, and oh, yes, the magnificent Secretariat at the Belmont. Anyway, the post helped to remember--thanks.

Morning, Barbaro! Time to rise and shine on this beautiful fall morning...Hope you get lots of visitors and treats today, sounds like a good day to go outside, too. Get some rest, don't overdo it.

God bless Barbaro, make him stronger every day.

Lyn, that article about subdivisions built around horses...There is one they are going to build not far from here, I believe it will be around Plainfield, IL, where they have a big central stable surrounded by all the new houses they will build, so you can keep your horse right there. They will have barn managers, trainers, etc. What a great idea!

    Morning Yall,
I really learned some things from the Baltimore article. Gretchen Jackson says Barbaro is no where near ready to be moved anywhere so I guess Florida for the winter is out.

She sits on the bedding in his stall ! That is pretty good for a colt/soon to be stallion. It shows what a gentle, loving horse he is to her.He is truly miraculous.

I laughed when the nurse described him after his accidental bite on her. She knows him well enough to read his eyes.
What a wonderful article on Barbaro.

I've made quite a few calls already because I have to go to the doctor this morning. See yall later.
Barbaro, you're astounding on your Six month anniversary. You're still here, fighting , and stronger than ever. love ya, big guy.

    GOOD MORNING ALEX -

Hope you had a good Birthday.

Thankful for BARBARO's continued recovery. Everyone please let's use BARBARO as inspiration of not giving up with the Senators.

If there is a will, there is a way!

    QUICK STORY:

Missed my flight in London and was told I could not be placed on a flight different from my route. Was able to leave Gatwick (UK), but last leg of the trip was going to be a 12 hr layover on standby, not guaranteed when I would get on. Begged and begged, they said it could not be done.

Arrived in the US and was going to wait for my layover. Experience has taught me that if there is a will, there is a way and it all depends on who you talk to, so I went to the ticket counter and explained my situation. With absolutely NO PROBLEM immediately was placed on a flight to LAX, my previous destination was Ontario (CA).

    Please remember:

IF THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY - DON'T GIVE UP

Yay Socorro...! And that's exactly Maid M's point...where there's a will there's a way...and if it isn't on the Ag Appropriations bill, well maybe there's another place for it...

    Here's another repost.

Six month anniversary skritches, carrots, apples,
and extras to undefeated champion world class big boss horse of forever, Barbaro Jackson...!
    Keep up the amazing work!

6 months have flown by and it's so good to have such upbeat reports these days. Also, very sad that others are not so positive...very sad about the numbers of breakdowns we hear about all the time. While trawling through stuff trying to find more info about this, I came across an article in the British press Reactions to deaths may bring fresh risks which also has an interestig end piece about the 'Maktoum effect' on racing worldwide.

    Good morning everyone,

As noted above, please be aware of our new strategy. Time is of the essence and we must make the required calls diligently and with passion.

We will do everything possible to make this happen for our horses. Please, everyone, take time out today to call/e-mail/fax your home senators and the leaders listed here:

Bill Frist office in Nashville: 615-352-9411

The local offices seem a bit confused. I had three different offices for my senators ask me, AFTER I said my part, if I was in favor or against. DUH!! What do they think "support" and "co-sponsor" mean"? Two of these were Obama's local offices, one was one of Durbin's locals.

Then, another local, I think it was McConnell's but I'm not sure any more, after asking him to take action.....in any vehicle" asked me the EXACT same thing.

I guess that means it's Monday. LOLOL

It just pisses me off that they are hearing big money and not the people who voted them into office. Last time I looked at the Washington Watch poll we were 77%. So the way I see it....we have to slam them even harder the next 2 weeks. I say we designate our own National Call In Day when they return. Any takers?

JANE in Ct-Thanks for you thinking of me. I have been quite down in the dumps. Seems every weekend has been bringing new hospital bills from Aug. I had previously filled out charity applications (since I am unemployed as of Feb.) I think they wait till one is approved before they send another, just to see what my breaking point will be. I am just sad.

Marky-I am so praying for you and your dadk, in Amsterdam. I know he will have wonderful care there. I hope that he will be up and around soon and your family will have many more times together under much better circumstances.

Susan E.-Good luck with Felix and his impending surgery, glad you made the decision. I pray he will be fantastic afterwards!

Lynda P.-I have been reading about your fab Lasik and am SOOO jealous. I am still hating on my progressive lens glasses.(for close up, far off is GREAT)

Linda H.-So happy to see you are able to post and are still recovering well from your surgery and I have my heart set on your full and fantastic recovery.

My dad has neuropathy so bad in his legs too, its too bad they do not have kitty support stockings for lil Bdudette's legs! They have helped my dad tremendously. They are like lady stockings, thigh highs, really cute! He has to wear garters that my aunt makes for him, his legs are sooo skinny!! (I do not have that problem, I take after mom side-big legs, LOL)

Socorro-Welcome back to this side of the world, my dear one! I hope that all is well now that you have arrived, and that you have no further problems with flights and layovers anymore. Have fun with your family and have a glorious visit!

    Cora and everyone
Now that we are calling local offices as well as D.C. offices, some of the aides are bound to be confused, as they will be unfamiliar with the legislation. Let's make it very clear to them; beginning our comments by saying

I SUPPORT S. 1915, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

If the aides are still confused after that, we should make sure they understand that we OPPOSE horse slaughter for human consumption. It is easy for aides to be confused if they don't know which way the bill is written. But our FINAL, recap statement should again be that we support the bill. Hopefully that should clear up any confusion and get our tallies recorded correctly.

We all know what to do now, from Shelley and Friar Tuck's posts. Here is the gist of it again:

    ***

Contact these Senators to ask for action on The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act in any vehicle before adjournment.

Bill Frist = phone @ office in Nashville- 615-352-9411
Mitch McConnell = phone @ office in Louisville -502-582-6304

Mary Landrieu = phone @ office in New Orleans - 504-589-2427
John Ensign = phone @ office in Las Vegas - 702-388-6605

Please call the above local offices in addition to the DC offices.

Also, contact your own senators both locally and in DC.

Hope you all had a great weekend!
The St. Louis Horse Heroes Fundraiser was held Saturday night, and I'm still waiting to hear a final tally from Dawn at Homestead Vet to report to you. They sold out the event--350 tickets at $65--so some good $$ even before the auction started!

I have to give a HUGE, PERSONAL THANKS to Alex for his wonderful support of this event. Busy as he is, after I contacted him, he not only arranged for a great donation from Godolphin Racing of a jacket autographed by Frankie Detorri (plus a cap and pen) BUT also put in a great bid for those items! He was also kind enough to ask Michael Matz to autograph some Barbaro caps I mailed him and ship them to St. Louis for the event! Alex--you're an amazing, amazing guy and I can't thank you enough for your help!

    Hi D'Anne!

I'm doing well - stitches still sting, the nerve endings reattaching are like pins and needles, but I feel stronger.
Next step is chemo - I'm hoping Mary L can give me some pointers on that one. I will be using accupuncture for the side effects. Will start sometime in December - one session every 3 weeks for 4 sessions.
In all, so far so good.
    Thank you for asking!

Renee - I am so glad you are feeling better - it seems like colds are worse than the flu anymore. Both colds I had this summer floored me. Take care of yourself, ok?

Cora, Tom is part circus dog, part lab. If he thinks he is going out, or if the leash becomes visible, kennel chaos begins. He does cartwheels, leash is tangled in the legs, and I broke my falling by using the doorway and my little toe. The doorway and Tom are fine. LOL til it hurts!

Well, I'm glad Tom is alright, the door, oh well, but a broken toe hurts like the blazes.

Hmm, maybe we should see about getting you into NBC, perhaps an adjoining stall with Barbaro. Bet that would make you forget about that toe real fast.

Yes Cora, if I did get a stall next to Big B., I'm sure I'd keep reinjuring the toe so I could stay longer. On the nurses report it would say, "She keeps trying to kick the stall door open". But we would all know the real truth.

    Mitch McConnell office in Louisville:502-582-6304
    Trent Lott office in Jackson:601-965-4644
Harry Reid: office in Las Vegas:702-388-5020

These next two weeks must be focused on this. Do it for Barbaro and all the horses not as fortunate as him.

You're not the first person who has used my name and some form of the word "demented" in the same sentence before. LOLOLOLOL (Just never mind, you guys. I can hear all those "wheels" turning on that one already. NO comments required!!) LOL

If I could be sure I'll have a foal, I think neo-natal is a great idea. I'd get to meet Barbaro, plus get my own horse out of the deal. It doesn't get any better than that.

    Posted by: Cora-IL at November 20, 2006 6:26 PM

Unbelievable that today is 6 months to the day for Barbaro.

The Baltimore Sun article brought tears to my eyes, Mrs Jackson has a very loving heart.

I am working from home today calling the senators, I decided the horses needed me more than my office did so I am off to make my phone calls!

    I hadn't considered that.

    your caretakers and doctors.
your great soul before me..and the manifestations of an interior

    ..that is enough in itself---..
as we mortals struggle to find ways to get our politicians to be
accountable to deeper values that in the end sustain the power of love
    and care,
i hear the beating of these big wings
    ...above and below my feet
    ...the clouds parting..the sun,pours out--
the will to honor all creatures

Cora, you are going to have such a difficult delivery. I just hope the foal isn't in breach position. You'd be recovering at NBC for months!

    MRS. JACKSON -
Thank you for all that you are doing. We never know what direction our lifes will take. Something horrible can become something positive and that is exactly what you have done with Barbaro's situation. Our love and respect to you, Mr. Jackson, and BARBARO.

    FRIAR TUCK -
Thank you, we will find a way.

Now that I am at my parents, I will put them on the phone when I am finished.

    ########

    CATHY POTTER -
Yes, I hope we will be able to get together. Perhaps we can go to some of our local racestracks and pass out flyers.

    DORA CHOW -
Thank you, it is nice to be here. Hope you have been feeling a little better and things have taken a turn for the best. When it rains it pours, but it has to stop some time, believe it does.

    NAZNI -
Sorry to have left you as you arrived, time flies faster than you think.

Cool...Mrs. Jackson called to thank us for our slaughter efforts!

So, most of us have 8 calls a day now. Four to badger, two to thank, and our own two senators to badger or thank, as appropriate.

    We can handle that!

I get sixteen in all that.

    Posted by: Cora-IL at November 20, 2006 7:29 PM

    Good afternoon all:
I just spoke with Damian in Senator Landrieu's office. I asked him point blank what we can do as private citizens to help the senator. I told him what we have been doing and he said that is the correct strategy. Find out who has not committed and stay after them. He said Senator Landrieu is extremely pleased with the support she has recieved from the public. The aide said she is very committed to getting this bill to a vote and they feel it's a no brainer to pass should it get that far. So that's good news. Now we have to somehow double our efforts. Here's an idea: if you don't know where your senator or senators stand, call and ask, directly, for the senator's position on S. 1915. If you find a senator who has not committed or is against the bill post it here. Then everyone start calling that senator. Let's start with Senator James Talent (Mo). He is undecided on his position. He was defeated in the election. I'm getting the runaround from his Kansas City office. He has two concerns which can be easily addressed. I offerred to meet with him, the aide said she would try to set that up. She called back and said she talked to his top aide who said the bill has no chance so the senator can't help. She said they were busy closing their offices and cleaning their desks but she would forward my message. This is the type of attitude that we have to stand up against, and stand hard. I have called his D.C. office and St. Louis office. I relayed the story to those people and I said that while the senator may be leaving office he is still on America's payroll and part of his job is to listen to Americans. I told the aide to get me an audience with the senator and I don't care if I have to go to D.C. He's a vote we can use! Please call him: lots!
    Senator Talent - 202-224-6154

Thanks so much for the fabulous article on Bobby in The Baltimore Sun. Sandra McKee has written some great articles on Bobby's progress during these past months!!
    ###################################################

It was wonderful and so heartwarming to read of Edgar's visit with Barbaro and that he actually provided the update for Alex!! Way to go, Edgar ...and Bobby!! The "love affair" that exists between Barbaro and Edgar is nothing short of amazing ... Bobby feels so comfortable that he can lie down, feet forward eating his hand-picked grass while "talking" to Edgar! How's that for trust, friendship and pure, pure love! Bobby has that for Edgar as well as Mom and Dad Jackson, Michael, Peter and of course, Dr. Richardson, the Wonder Vet of the Universe!!!

Alex, thanks so much for providing this wonderful insight into Barbaro and his "family"! Loved reading it and also the comments from Mrs. Jackson expressing her gratitude to everyone ... but it is US who owe this great debt of gratitude to the Jacksons for all they have done for Bobby, equine research and awareness and for all of the Fans of Barbaro who want so much to remain as close as we can to Bobby's recovery and progress! Thank YOU so much, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson for this privilege!!
    ##################################################

Well, dearest Annointed One, it's no secret that you are progressing so very very well these days and having the time of your life with all of your visitors! Most selfishly, I would love to have you here in The Sunshine State for the winter, basking, grazing and gleaming in the warm Florida Sunshine. But that decision isn't mine, is it? But it can be YOURS!! Just nuzzle Dr. R's ear and whisper those "sweet nothings" that he loves from you so much and then just catch him offguard and say:

"Hay, Doc, remember this song from way way way back?" (with a few minor lyric changes:)

    "BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE"

    I really can't stay
    I've got to go away
    I know that it's been
    So very nice

My mother will start to worry
My father will be pacing the floor
    So really I'd better scurry
Well Maybe just a Stud Muffin more

    The "Maniacs" fear
    I'll be too cold here
    I want to be where
    It's nice and warm

I've got to say no, no, no, Doc
At least you have to know that I tried
    I really can't stay
    Doc, it's so cold outside!

    I simply must go
    The answer is "No"
    This welcome has been
    So nice and warm

But winter is freezing cold here
I won't get out to romper and graze
My trusty Doc, I want you to be near
Vacation with me for a few days

    I've got to go South
    Now don't start to pout
    You've really been grand
    But don't you see

There's bound to be ice tomorrow
At least there will be plenty of snow
Now, you don't want to wallow in sorrow
Release the reins and just let me go

    I really can't stay
    So take me away
    To Palm Meadows Farm
    I'll be so warm

Now Michael will walk and groom me
And Peter will be right at his side
I've got a lot of "Maniac" fans there
And maybe I can give them a ride

    I really must go
    Doc, 'cause it's cold outside

    Doc, it's soooo cold outside!!

Good morning FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!
We are having a fairly decent day here in the Pacific Northwest, some sun with blue sky, some clouds, but with more rain on the way. I'll take whatever sun I can get!

Marg in Maine, I am curious - what brand of coffee do you brew? Is it Starbucks? Tully's? Seattle's Best? Or (Yeeccch) Folgers or Maxwell House?! I guess you can tell that I live in one of the biggest espresso capitals in the country! There are Starbucks all over the country, so there should be a store near where you live. Give it a shot!

Bdude, thank you for posting your site again. I am so sorry that you and your sister are having such a bad time lately. There is no good time to be ailing, but it is even harder when it's over the holidays. Hope you and your sister get to feeling better soon. It has to be a big worry for your owner Steve, too!

Well, gotta go and make those calls and Emails, etc., be back later!

    Hay everyone!

Thanks for the updates, Alex. Great story. Thank you for the links. I think many of us can relate to Mrs. Jackson, and would never question that connection with a horse that is so loved. I don't doubt for a minute that Barbaro speaks to her. All I can say about those who may be doubtful is that they have never loved or been loved by a horse

Speaking of loving a horse, I love you Mr. Barbaro Jackson. Can't believe it's been six months since that horrible day. And you are here and you continue to amaze and inspire. You are such a shining star and affirmation of why so many of us have unquestioning faith.

Mr. Prado, you are my hero. You are as instrumental in this wonderful horse's survival as Michael Matz is, and as the incredible team at NBC is. Your brilliance on that terrible day six months ago saved his life, and I hope you know that. You have my love and admiration

Barbaro Family it's a quite week at the senate offices, some already have full voice mailboxes, but the fax machines go on! Don't lose heart.

Will check in with you all later. Hope everyone is well. Prayers for all who need them, and love to ALL!!

If you want to email him go to XM Radio. Search for Willie's Place in Country Music. I hear Eddie at 5-7AM PST.
Eddie has said that it is the "Big Money" that is fighting against. I reiterate that it is a sorry state of affairs that our elected officials listen to the money and not to the people. So if it takes a monstrous effort on all our parts to CALL, CALL, CALL & CALL again for the next 2 weeks, we just have to bite the bullet and JUST DO IT.

    ### ALL FOBs,

The following is an excerpt from a local newspaper article titled "Lobbyist: Cattlemen face political challenges":

"Frankhauser said ranchers will want to work to defeat a bill outlawing the slaughter of horses for meat. The bill could be disastrous for the beef industry in terms of how to dispose of old and unusable horses, he said."

Terry Frankhauser is the Cattlemen group's executive vice president. This was said at a meeting of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association in regard to the new challenges facing the cattlemen now that the Democrats have taken control.

Try as I might, I could not see the logic in the statement that the passage of this bill would be disastrous for the cattle industry. (Except for the kickbacks they receive). Would people not then have to eat MORE beef???

WE HAVE TO WORK DILIGENTLY TO PASS THIS BILL BEFORE THE CATTLEMEN CAN GET THEIR BEARINGS and begin to campaign more heavily against it. CALL, FAX, CALL, EMAIL, CALL.

As much as we love Barbaro, I don't think even we realize just how special he is as is this entire passage. If you really think about the journey over the last six month (without dwelling on the Preakness - still chokes me up), when you think about the immdiate, excellent care he received, when you think about the wonderful Dr. Richardson and his NBC staff, when you think about Edgar, and Michael and Peter and Alex and Tim, when you think about the love from Kennett Florist and all of us who care so much and last but far from least who owned Barbaro...the Jacksons. Without the Jackson's, if someone else might have owned him, well, who knows? But they were meant to own him and decide to help him recover.

If this is not a miracle, I don't know what is. Thank you God.

    Deborah A;
The problem is the cattlemen do have their bearings. For years they have worked behind the scenes to forge political alliances, gotten bills passed in their favor, etc. on and on. All that is about to change. Not only because the political climate is changing but also because people like us are becoming aware of the facts, facts that have been hidden in "America's Dirty Little Secret!" They are more afraid of public knowledge of the facts than anything else. That's why we have to stay together and continue to do what we have been doing. It's only a start, but the start has pro-slaughter people scrambling.

    #######

So the "cattle industry" is threatened. Talk about naive, that is just plain STOOOOOOOPID. Capital STOOOOOOOO capital PID. I can't believe that these people are that dumb. Do they read? do they send their horses to slaughter? How about little daughter's first horse who has grown old. "sorry little daughter. Your beloved mare is going to end up on someone's dinner table, but don't cry, she is old". How's this. Cattleman's horses are rustled, end up in a big old truck bound for Texas or IL or Mexico or Canada, whatever. Aw don't worry about it, Mr. Cattleman. They'll end up on someone's dinnerplate, that will save you the time and trouble of having them humanely euthanized when they become old and sick. They aren't old and sick now but they will be."

What kind of humanity are we dealing with here? I don't usually inflict my values or principles on others but I AM SO GLAD I DO NOT EAT MAMMALS, ESPECIALLY CATTLE!!!!!

Deborah, I have been around cowboys/ranchers/cattlemen/cattlewomen and some of them do care about their horses, truly. But they care for different reasons than we care for our animals. Their general perspective is to see ranching as a money making business, it is their livelihood. They don't have horses for pets, their horses are vehicles to get them around. Their attitude is very rigid about this, they see treating a horse as a pet as a weak-minded thing. It is a very macho industry. So, it's not like they are intentionally mean, it's just that they are not animal lovers like we are. The cattle they raise are to be killed and eaten.

Another point of view - I no longer eat red meat because I had breast cancer. In fact a recent study came out that showed women who had a regular diet of red meat, ie. more than once a day had a much higher risk of breast cancer opposed to women who ate it once a week. This study was taken from thousands of women.

Anyway, I'm sure you know all this. Don't mean to go on and on!

    Good Afternoon FsOB,

I see that several have posted about having a terrible cold. Well, you can add one more to that number. I always thought I was immune - gee, guess I'm not.

re: Calls - I was surprised by the aide in Frists office. She put me on hold a long time. Then when she picked up and I said I was calling about S.1915 she said "and what bill is that?" It floored me. I thought she would know. Well, she did by the time we hung up. I noted the importance of the horse in the history of this nation, the importance of the horse in our country today. Then went on about the need for passing, etc., etc. Then from her I started getting "OK Mam, OK Mam" several times. She did want an address as well. McConnel's office also wanted an address. Trent Lott was interesting. She was the first to say that they'd received lots of calls today (GO FOB's). Reid's office was polite but distant - just that the information would be given to the Senator. My own 2 Senators aides continue to say that they are already co-sponsors and pro S.1915. I told her that being a co-sponsor won't do any good if it doesn't get scheduled for a vote or attached to another bill as an amendment. Nelson's office claims to be doing everything they can and that I'm "preaching to the choir" to call them. I'll keep calling anyway but always friendly and polite.

Let's keep calling fans - they need to know we're not going away.

    ### Bonnie,

Thanks so much for another point of view.

Several years ago for about 15 years we had both cattle and horses on our farm/ranch. We branded calves, hauled them to summer pasture and to the sale. But, maybe having been a city girl before, I never could NOT have loved our horses, even though they were used sometimes for work. They each had a name and a personality and we treated them with respect. Never could I remotely imagine sending them to such a death. They went to a good, forever home when we moved (we have since moved back to the same place - long story).

We are now working to get the place back in shape so that I can someday bring home two abandoned or unwanted horses to live out their days with us.

As for the rescues, that is still in the wee stages, but I am sure it will come to pass eventually, I am not a tenacious Cancer crab for nothing!! It may take hubby and me a couple of years to fix everything - we are not as young as we used to be. But thank you for your gracious thoughts and I will keep you posted.

    Much love. Debbie

    Deborah,
I think I know about where you are. My daughter lives in Taos, N.M. in northerly NM. She has driven through southern Colorado, says it's very pretty. She lives on a horse ranch about 20 min. no. east of Taos, works in town then rides, gives lessons and cleans stalls at the ranch. I would say she has a pretty nice yet busy life! Wish I still had horses, well perhaps in the future, at least one to ride now and then would be nice!

Like to share this wonderful story about Barbaro as he's been healing at Bolton for six months.

Barbaro - A Legacy of Hope

"After watching Barbaro’s breakdown in the Preakness Stakes, my enthusiasm for racing, like that of many others who love it, suffered a crushing blow. For the first time in thirty years of painting Thoroughbred racing, I had lost my enthusiasm. While other artists hurried to paint Barbaro, I told my wife that I didn’t know if I could paint this horse, or any other horse ever again. My feelings, along with most of the industry, were that Barbaro was not going to survive this type of injury.

"Then something strange happened. The combination of a dedicated animal hospital, a race horse with an amazing spirit, and the eternal hope of his owners caused me to look at this tragic event in a much more positive light.

"At this time, no one knows the future of this very special horse, but because I am a story teller, I knew that I had to paint him, if only to show the dogged determination of both man and animal in the fight for his survival." - Fred Stone

Here's a difference in attitude. When I talked with Senator Landrieu's aide he said the senator listens to all Americans. He said as senator she realizes that she must address issues that affect people from around the country so she does hear. When a senator's aide says to call your own state, remind the person, politely, that your senator has the title United States Senator and this is a national issue, not an issue that has state line borders.

I was wearing my goggles that the clinic gave me to sleep in and I had my eyes shut most of the time. When I got home I saw what I looked like with the goggles oh, OH MY GOSH yuck! I am glad I just have to wear them sleeping.

Nighty, night, Barbaro! Sounds like you had such a good day as you pass the six month mark on your miracle road to recovery. I'm sure you know what a great mom you have with Mrs. Jackson and such a great friend as Edgar. You are truly blessed, sweetie. Time to tuck you in all nice and cozy in your thick cushy straw. Sweet dreams, hunny, get lots of zzzzz's.

God bless Barbaro, thank you for all you have done for him, please continue to hold him in the palm of your hand.

I enjoyed reading the article about Mrs. Jackson and Barbaro. However, I was troubled when she said that she doubted he'll come back to their farm when he's well because of the security needs etc. As much as I would love to see him at the Kentucky Horse Park, I think it is more important that he be with the people he so clearly loves and who have gotten him through this injury. I really believe that their love has been an important part of his healing, and I think he'd be terribly lonely for them. I don't think any of his supporters on this website would want him to be anywhere other than the best place for HIM even if it meant that he would live a private life and not be accessible to his fans.

Thank you Alex for all the wonderful links and updates today.

I can only imagine what Edgar was feeling when visiting Barbaro today six months after the accident. It all came back at him during the Distaff at BC and I hope he was happy seeing Barbaro doing so well today. Barbaro with Edgar sitting by him as he munched on his Lael grass. What an image!! Second only to Mrs. Jackson sitting with Barbaro when she needs quiet time. I remember doing my best thinking just sitting on my Gannon in his stall when the rest of the world was crazy but his stall was a comfort zone.
True horse people are the same everywhere.

Barbaro, the nipper, or biter, his teeth say one thing, his eyes another. "Did I do that????" LOL
I hope everyone wears their bite wounds as a badge of honor. Ahhh, to be bitten by Barbaro! What a story to tell.

Alex, I'm glad you got to talk to Edgar today. He is a man to be admired. The whole Barbaro team is so special. Now we have to keep up with our emails and calls for the next two weeks. Mrs. Jackson gave us her personal thanks so that should help us keep moving to end horse slaughter this year. Together we can do it.

Roberta - I agree with you - I think he needs to be with the Jacksons. I would love to see him - perhaps there could be a couple days a year the public would be allowed to visit.

Would Mrs Jackson fly to Kentucky to see him every week and feed him and love him? I guess she probably would. But he needs to be home with mom and dad.

    IMPORTANT!!

Will someone please point me to what/where I need to sponsor horses for NBC for Christmas? I looked at the DB and saw a thread and read some of it but I can't find the link to actually doing what's needed to be done.

Will someone please post the instructions/directions again? I know that time is running short and I now find that I am able to contribute and sponsor my Frankie and Clueless Too. What do I need to do and where and how do I let you know to include me in the Xmas Stocking?

    Thanks!!

Posted by: Linnie at November 20, 2006 11:58 PM

Count my vote in too, I say he needs to be with his Mom and Dad, the Jacksons. If I never see Barbaro in person, if I never touch his velvety nose, if I never stroke his mane, I would still be just as happy to know he is healthy, happy, and surrounded by the people whom he loves and those who love him. The public can adore him from afar, just like movie stars. But we all know Bobby is bigger than a movie star!!

ALEX, I liked your choice of words..."celebrating six months of Barbaro's recovery.." That was a very good way to put it.

EDGAR PRADO, God bless you, you're the MAN.

I agree with Roberta, Sally and Mary. Somehow I feel Barbaro belongs home with the Jacksons. But the key is that he always and forever has lots of interraction with humans - he likes it and thrives on it. Yes, we'd love to see him, but whatever's best for him comes first.

Posted by: Christine at November 21, 2006 12:03 AM

I couldn't agree more with doing what's the very best for Barbaro ... on all levels. Whatever emotional attachments he now has formed should be continued without "amendment!" LOLOL

Of course, if spending time in a warm climate during the winter IS the best for Barbaro, then, of course, I would want to see that happen. But if this would be ill-timed, then he needs to be where he will receive the best care and love and recovery possible!!

Posted by: Linnie at November 21, 2006 12:04 AM

    Linnie,
Go to www.hsmo.org and click on the Horse Heroes. From here scroll down and pick out the horses you want to sponsor. You will be prompted to fill out a form and send money. When done, click in the upper right for Contact Us, and fill out the webform to let them know you sent money to sponsor [enter names of horses you are sponsoring] in honor of NBC for Christmas. Then go the DB - "MO MAMAS SMAX SPONSORS FOR NBC" and let gannonrose know who you sponsored and how you would like the card filled out.

e above is per Cora-IL (thanks Cora!!)

    Linnie:

Regarding sponsoring a horse for Christmas:

To sponsor a horse, go to http://www.hsmo.org/

When you get there, click on Horse Heroes. That will take you to the page with a picture and update for each animal. At the bottom of each
description is a link to sponsor that animal. Clicking that link and following their directions is all it takes to sponsor.

Once you have done that, click on "contact us". I believe it is at the top of the page. Send them a note saying that you are sponsoring whichever
animal(s) you pick "In honor of NBC for Christmas".

Then go back to the MO Xmas thread and post a message to gannonrose. Tell her what animal you sponsored and how you would like your name to read on the card. Each day, she updates the first post so it shows everyone who has sponsored.

Each animal will have a picture card with the names and states of its sponsors on the back. Gannonrose has a wonderful, unique stocking (which
you can see a photo of in that thread) which will be presented to NBC. It will have the photo cards and some small treats in it. In addition, as
you will see on the thread, a letter from the HSMO will be written to the staff of NBC stating that FOBs sponsored the accident horses for Christmas in honor of the staff. The letter will be framed and given along with the Christmas Stocking by Dr. Sweeney to the staff.

I think I covered everything, but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I'm always happy to help.

Amen Roberta... I agree. The best for OUR horse is to be with his family. Their love has gotten him this far. My LOVE from afar has at the very least kept the Jackson's, Dr. Richardson, Michael, Peter, Alex (and all others) going on and on each day.

I am perfectly happy knowing that he is back home, eating his grass and walking on his land.

What he deserves is to go HOME. Afterall, when we are sick and when we are better, "There is no place like home". Someday going home will be the next medicine for his healing.

Don't send him anywhere but HOME for me (the public). He does not need to be in a trophy case for me. The Jackson's can LOVE him for me just fine.

    Linda,
I understand your idea and I would like to see him with the Jacksons too and at the same time am a little reluctant to counter Mrs. Jackson's wishes. She knows best about what is going to work for them and Barbaro. It sounds like she's concerned about his overwhelming notoriety and how they would handle that at their ranch which is not set up for that. It would be a big change for him to go to KHP. Well, it all remains to be seen!

With so many working on the anti-slaughter issue, I thought some would appreciate reading this too. Possible good news for many dogs and cats. Let's hope this proposal passes, as well as S.1915. Looks like animal rights and welfare issues are beginning to gain some ground. Who knows, maybe the EU passing this ban will have some impact on the Senate passing S.1915. You never know.

If the Jackson's decide to send Barbaro to the Ky horse park it would be a wonderful place for him. It's beautiful there, he would see alot of doting fans and I promise you the staff there will pick up the spoiling of Barbaro where NBC and the Jacksons left off. He loves people and attention and he'd get plenty of it there. He would have his own large paddock to be turned out in daily , I think they stay out at night and get stalled during the day. Then a couple of times a day he will be brought out to see his fans, he'll think he's in a post parade. He'll love it!
It never ceases to amaze me at how generous the Jackson's are with this horse.

    Guys

KHP isn't some kind of freak show. It's a place where retired/pensioned horses get to spend their lives being cared for, being loved, being horses. Does that really sound SOOO bad????

If Barbaro recovers enough to stand at stud, he'll go to a stallion station anyway. They take pretty good care of their horses too. Dynaformer, his sire, another biter (well worse than Barbaro, but still a biter) lives at Three Chimneys. They have loads of experience handling stallions.

Someone mentioned Cigar and John Henry being at KHP. From the sound of it, they were pretty happy.

I really think the Jacksons will do the best for Barbaro, they have so far.

I guess I also don't see him at Lael. It's a smaller place. Are they equipped to handle a young, strong stallion??? Do they have the staff on hand for that??? I sure don't picture the Jacksons doing it themselves.

Seriously, they will do what is best for Barbaro. Whatever they pick, he'll do fine, just as he has with everything else. Remember, he was born in KY, trained in FL, and spent time going between FL and PA. Then there was all the different people and places when he was racing. He thrived on all the change. He'll be fine whatever they pick for him.

I'm more worried about seeing him get better than I am about what happens after he gets better.

Little info on the Kentucky Horse Park. It's just outside Lexington to the north. The park is a showcase for the horse, all horses. Many, many breeds live there. There is what's called the Hall of Champions, which is where Barbaro would go. John Henry lives there (he's about 31), as well as the great Cigar, Da Hoss (2X Breeders Cup winner), and several horses. Those guys go out several times a day for a "Parade of Champions" show. They all have a paddock to play in as well. The barn itself isn't much to look at when you're used to seeing Three Chimneys, Lanes End, etc; however the staff really love the horses. The park is closed in the winter time to visitors, but of course the horses are all still there. The park will, in 2010, be the first venue outside of Europe to host the World Equestrian Games. Each year it hosts the Rolex Three Day event, a MAJOR eventing competition. John Henry has lived there for years, I would guess Funny Cide might wind up there as well. The place is beautiful, costs about $15.00 to get in. Web link is: kyhorsepark.com. Amazingly when it first opened you could go there and not see many horses, but it has developed into a world class place.

Here is the link to Kentucky Horse Park. I believe Mike C went there recently to see John Henry and Cigar. Am I correct FOB's that John Henry is 32 years old?!! WOW!!

Hi to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

Well, it's pouring down rain again here in the Pacific Northwest! I didn't think the sun would stay very long, so I feel that we will break the monthly rainfall total for December soon.

I made my Email contacts today. Some of the Senators I hit once, some twice, and Frist six times. I will do it again tomorrow. It took me awhile, because I had trouble coming up with something to Email to state our importance without going overboard. If any of you let me know what you Emailed to these Senators, please let me know your formats; I'd be delighted!

Renee gone to bed already? (Don't) Walk Away Renee, you won't see me follow you back home...anybody remember that song? The Left Banke did it originally, but I like the Four Tops' version better!

Everybody take care, and more Emailing tomorrow, if not later tonight. Remember that you can Email 24/7!

I am being selfish I guess. I hoped someday to see him. I live in Maryland. I most likely would not be able to afford to go Kentucky.

I know the Jacksons will do the right thing for their horse. They have gotten him this far. I trust their love. I know they are strong family people. Afterall they named him after a dog in a picture from Mr. Jackson's parents.

It just came to me that this is the perfect site to pass along information on one of the few places I donate money. My son volunteers here, and our horse came from this therapy program. With all the talk of sponsors for the Missouri horses, and yes, they need help so much, just wanted this horse world to be aware of another place that is always in need of donations too. If you have a minute, take a look at the program. I take riding lessons from the gal that runs the program every week, so I get to see first hand how my money is spent, and how much it benefits both kids and adults in need of this special attention only horses can give. I know there are many horse therapy programs out there, in many states. This is the only one I'm familiar with though, and it has certainly made an impression, and a believer out of me. Even if you only take a peek at their website, it gives you a feel for what these incredible animals can do. Enjoy! The photo album is full of warm fuzzies. http://www.pathwaysaat.org/ yes, we are calling senators, and word has been passed along to many now by my husband.

Thanks for the description Kim. The place sounds quite nice, it would be good for Barbaro. He loves to ham it up, so being in a show sounds perfect for him!

KHP is a great place, but I am still hoping he gets well enough to go someplace like Three Chimneys. I would love to see little Barbaros someday.

If he can't stand at stud-then KHP would be a super place for him. I just hope he gets well enough to do ALL the things a happy young male wants to be doing.

I keep picturing what his foals would look like. Little "mini-B's" running around all over the place.

    Kim,
I know you live near Lexington so your standards for a horse barn are way above what I'm used to in Louisiana but ummm that barn at the KY horse park looked pretty good to me. LARGE stalls, paneled wood walls ,real wood no less. Girl, that's what we call classy accommodations in these parts! LOL
Also, I noticed that all the horses in the hall of chaimpions had women handlers... interesting. It was also evident that those women were very proud of their charges and loved those horses dearly.
If anyone gets a chance to go to the hall of champions, do it. It's very emotional to see those heros of horse racing. Bring your tissues!

Also, you may wish for them to see if your bill approaches "spend-down" thresholds for AL Title XIX. And finally, if all else fails, you may wish to ask that they bill you at a rate that a managed care health plan would have reimbursed them. Many health care consumers in the USA are unaware that uninsured folks are frequently forced to pay for hospital care at a higher rate than a health plan would negotiate for its enrollees. Forgive me for sounding like a "health policy wonk" and former advocate. I apologize, but I hate to think that you are losing sleep with worries.

Just for the record, once Barbaro's left NBC, I want you all to know that, I don't need to touch, or hug Barbaro; my thoughts/prayers and love will still be the same. My love for Barbaro will never falter, wherever he is!

IF he's healed and happy at home (Lael Farms) with all of those who love and have loved and cared for him, I'm thrilled for Bobby, his family, and for Bobby's joy, FOREVER.

Mom Gretchen, Edgar, Michael, Peter, Dr. Dean..you've all aided Bobby's healing by your love and devotion. I do not want Bobby to ever be apart from any of you. NO MATTER WHAT.

While I love you, Bobby, always...I want YOU to live every day with the constant love of your Mom, Dad and everyone else who's been a part of your healing and daily life. The serene love of those who have sustained you through all of these trying times.

Mom and Dad Jackson, PLEASE listen to all of the Fans of Barbaro ... we love Barbaro sooooo much, that we don't want you to make a choice that would take our dearest Bobby away from YOU. We don't want to see him in a 'presentation' mode, anywhere. Although the world dearly loves your darling baby, we do NOT want Barbaro to EVER sacrifice his happiness, love and comfort to become some sort of 'icon'.

Gretchen and Roy: Please set your boundaries. Do not allow your lives to be overtaken. Bobby is just comining home. No worries. You will determine what is appropriate, and what is not. He's your baby, he's just coming home..to be loved, and comforted...

    Bobby will need time, safe,

I think it's just another tremendous, non-selfish move on part of The Jacksons to share Barbaro with us all by considering to place him at The Horse Park when he's able.
The Horse Park is the ULTIMATE for warriors. They are well kept, have nice paddocks to romp in and , hey, ITS KENTUCKY--LEXINGTON..its the VATICAN of the racing world. Its the epicenter of the racing world.Horses are king there, people take a back seat. MAN O WAR is buried on site. Its a great gesture on The Jacksons to considering it. Putting BARBARO there would have them lined up for miles to see him.Pay him his just dues, like a king.

I've been with you, you in my thoughts and prayers every day since that terrible mis-step. But you have won many more victories there at NBC then you would have on the track. You have a higher purpose beautiful boy and all your fans will be waiting for the day that you leave NBC for happier days in green pastures. Stay the course Champ and your nation of fans will always be here for you. Jo -

Do you remember we were talking about the jockey who was thrown after his ride, Dr. Ramos, hit the rail at Golden Gate Fields earlier this year? And how he just dazzled the doctors by coming around so quickly, and walking out of the hospital? You had asked if we had heard what happened to Dr. Ramos after that incident, although no one had heard of anything negative.

Well, circles within circles, guess who's photo is on TB Friends today??? If you check Joe's page, hopefully still up when you read this (unless you checked earlier today!), there is a photo of Dr. Ramos, now working as a lesson horse, with two of his friends who walked over to Joe's place!

You could blow me over with a feather! That makes me REALLY happy...

    URGENT UPDATE on Slaughter bill

(if you visit this site, there are graphic pictures on slaughter there)

    http://www.equineadvocates.org/

S.1915 must pass in 2006 for the American horse slaughter ban to take effect in 2007.

A failure to pass this bill will result in the continuing escalation of horse slaughter with no end in sight.

f S.1915 does not pass in 2006, then America's horses will continue to be brutally slaughtered, as depicted in this photo of a Texas slaughterhouse. We can make history by passing this vital legislation if every American who cares about horses gets involved now. Outgoing Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, must be urged to bring this bill to the Senate floor for a vote before Congress adjourns. Please take the time to act now. This is literally a matter of life and death.

THE CLOCK IS TICKING!... With the 2006 elections behind us, we must now concentrate on passing the Senate version of The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act so that it can be signed into law and take effect in 2007. The House of Representatives made history by passing its version (H.R. 503) on September 7, 2006 (To read more about it, click here...)

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! There is now no time to rest or waste. Unless the Senate version of the bill, S.1915, is passed in 2006 before Congress adjourns, the entire process will have to start all over again. Worst of all, America's horses will continue to be brutally slaughtered. We are now closer than ever before to ending the cruel and un-American practice of horse slaughter in the United States and the transport of live equines from the US across the Canadian and Mexican borders for the purpose of slaughter. We have just a very short period of time between the end of the 2006 elections (now history) and the time that the Senate adjourns for the year which could be in November or December of 2006. There is very little time left to get this done, so everyone has to really get involved now!

Here is what has to happen in order for S.1915 to pass this year:

    * Outgoing Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, has to introduce a motion for the bill to come to the floor for a vote. He must be urged to do this and it must happen through you, the voters, and with the urging of the sponsors and co-sponsors of the bill and his other colleagues in the US Senate. To find out more about S.1915, including the list of co-sponsors and other important information, click here. To read the full text of the Senate bill, click here.

    * Although there are reportedly enough votes in the Senate to pass this bill, there still needs to be at least sixty (60) Senators committed to voting for it to avoid a block of this legislation by Charles Grassley of Iowa (who has already made it clear that he intends to try to kill this legislation), outgoing Senator Conrad Burns of Montana (who attached the Burns Amendment to a 2004 spending bill which privatized America's wild horse and burro herds), and others who have ties to special interests that want to keep horse slaughter legal.

    * The current status of this legislation is that it is on the Senate calendar, but a date has not yet been determined for a vote. We can and must make that happen. Please take the time to fax, call and email your two Senators, and also urge your family and friends locally and across the country to do the same.

This is what you must ask your Senators to do:

    1. Urge outgoing Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, to make a motion for S.1915, The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to come to the Senate floor for a vote BEFORE CONGRESS ADJOURNS.
    2. Vote for S.1915 WITHOUT AMENDMENTS.
    3. Try to get at least SIXTY (60) SENATORS to vote for S.1915 to prevent a block by opposing Senators... And just as they did in the House of Representatives, to vote for it WITHOUT AMENDMENTS.

To obtain the contact information for your two Senators or any Senator in Congress, visit: www.senate.gov. Note: Even if one or both your Senators are on the current list of 28 co-sponsors of S.1915, you still must contact them and ask them to work hard for its passage.

How you can provide additional help

After you have contacted your own two Senators, and your family and friends across the country to do the same, here is some additional action you can take to help make a real difference to get this legislation passed in 2006:

    * In order to get S.1915 to the floor for a vote, outgoing Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist must introduce a motion to proceed. Call and/or fax him and urge him to do so. Also, please contact Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Whip, to support this legislation and get it to the floor for a vote.

    Senator Bill Frist (TN): (202) 224-3344; Fax: (202) 228-1264
    Senator Mitch McConnell (KY): (202) 224-2541; Fax: (202) 224-2499

There are a number of other key players in the Senate who need to be contacted in order to get this bill to the floor for a vote. Please contact these Senators and urge them to do that:
    * Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and John Ensign of Nevada introduced this bill, but need encouragement from you and your respective Senators to really work for this legislation and get it to the floor for a vote:

    Senator Mary Landrieu (LA): (202) 224-5824; Fax: (202) 224-9735
    Senator John Ensign (NV): (202) 224-6244; Fax: (202) 228-2193

    * There are three remaining equine slaughterhouses in the US - two in Texas and one in Illinois. Please contact the four Senators from those two states and urge them to vote for S.1915 without amendments:

    From the State of Illinois:
    Senator Barack Obama (IL): (202) 224-2854; Fax: (202) 224-4260
    Senator Dick Durbin (IL): (202) 224-2152; Fax: (202) 228-0400

    From the State of Texas:
Senator John Cornyn (TX): (202) 224-2934; Fax: 228-2856
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (TX): (202) 224-5922; Fax: (202) 224-0776

    * In 1998, 60% of the California electorate passed Proposition 6, the first state initiative in history which banned the slaughter of horses for human consumption. The two Senators from that state should be big supporters of S.1915 because their constituents are solidly behind it. Please contact Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein and ask them to work hard to pass this bill:

    Senator Barbara Boxer (CA): (202) 224-3553; Fax: (202) 228-2382
    Senator Diane Feinstein (CA): (202) 224-3841; Fax: (202) 228-3954

    * In addition, please contact key Senators, Harry Reid, the Senate Minority Leader, from Nevada and Ted Stevens of Alaska and urge them to work hard for the passage of this bill without amendments:

Senator Harry Reid (NV): (202) 224-3542; Fax: (202)224-7327
    Senator Ted Stevens (AK): (202) 224-3004; Fax: (202) 224-2354

    * Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa has already taken steps to try to kill S.1915, just as his colleague, Congressman Steve King (IA) tried to do in the House of Representatives. Fortunately, King's efforts were soundly defeated and we want Grassley's to fail as well. Please contact him and ask him not to stand in the way of this vital legislation:

    Senator Charles Grassley (IA): (202) 224-3744; Fax: (202) 224-6020

    * We know that Senator Conrad Burns of Montana is a strong proponent of horse slaughter and will probably try to block S.1915 and kill it. Please contact him and ask him to remain neutral, particularly since he has been voted out of office and will not be back next year.

    Senator Conrad Burns (MT): (202) 224-2644; Fax: (202) 224-8594

Also, Senator Max Baucus of Montana should be contacted and asked to support S.1915 without amendments:

    Senator Max Baucus (MT): (202) 224-2651; Fax: (202) 224-0515

    Hi All

I suppose the time difference is a bit of a problem in our being online at the same time.

Soccoro, thanks for your message. I am sure you are having a wonderful time with family, and Mum's cooking. Wild Wadi was great fun, but did miss having you and Geoff on the trip.

Hope all goes well with Barbaro.

    Best Regards

    Nazni

6 months - hard to believe. Barbaro's heart of a champion has gotten him, and all of us to this point. This story is from last month, but I will always see it as a reminder of how far Bobby has come, and how far he has to go. It's Jerardi's story about Barbaro's Steady Doc. God Bless Dr. Richardson.

Atta boy, Barbaro! You are a daily dose of miracle medicine.

Bobby, tomorrow is Felix's surgery and today was my last day on that nasty job, so I have not been able to read our friend's posts and don't know the latest. I did see your updates. What's this about you lounging around, with supplicants kneeling next to you in the straw sweet-talking you and feeding you grass? You are quite the spoiled colt, and you deserve it. I cannot help but picture you in a toga and a laurel wreath on your head, however. Hedonism, thy name is horse!

Well, time to tuck you in, Sweet Velvet Nose. Sleep well and heal, and tonight, if you would, dream of a healthy, strong Felix coming out of surgery tomorrow. Be careful getting up and down, and no clowning! Have ACN so you'll be rested for another strenuous day of being pampered tomorrow!

Good night everyone, catch up with you later.

Thanks Cora, your instructions for MO Mamas Sponsor Horses for Xmas to honor staff of NBC is flawless.
    ####
Mary in Wisconsin, I have your information and added you to the list for Jackpot. Thanks Mary.
    ####
Linnie - Thanks so much. You are on the list for Frankie and Clueless Too. I knew you were from Florida. I am getting good at this match FOB to state thing.

Pam, I thought the same thing you did. I don't want Barbaro to become a side-show where people parade past him and gawk. He is too majestic for that. I would like him to enjoy some freedom to just be a horse. He deserves it. I would gladly sacrifice seeing him for his mental and physical health. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see him, but at what cost to him would it be for a constant parade of fans who would equally love to see him be the course of his day. This will be a tough call for the Jacksons to make. I know they will think only of his best interests as they have always done.

Good night sweet Barbaro. You are greatly loved. Grow stronger every day and do you PT daily to strengthen your leg and grow that hoof. Bella, Gracie and I send butterfly kisses your way.

Jane in Ct- thanks for listening to my rants. It is very much appreciated. I am sorry you too, have been out of service as well. Hope things pick up for you really soon. Prayers will be on for you tonight too.

Cindy A.-Parker got a pretty good report from endocrinologist. He has to have a new bone scan on his hand to determine if his bone growth-plate age has caught up with his actual age. My sister starts her anti viral meds tonight, liver biopsy showed it is positively auto-immune hepatitis. Enzymes still high as the devil, but liver is still functioning. Thank God! Oh, Parker went to dentist for first 3 yr old exam visit too! Diane said he did great!

Robyn Hoffman-My other sister, Mary(nurse) said you are absolutely correct about the prices they charge uninsured folks. She is dealing with quality control insurance/billing implementation etc. now, instead of emergency nursing.
I have gotten a response from a couple of the charity apps, they rerouted them to indigence app. people, (since I am not employed-charity app. do not apply). The medical indigent app. has been approved for partial of the actual hospital bill, but of course, does not cover Dr. bill/MRI/CT scan bill/numerous other bills I am recieving now. Your information is so important and helpful to me. Thank you for helping me out. It has made me lose sleep and is driving me a little crazy. I am now making copies of all bills coming and sending copies of the letter informing me of the financial assistance/adjustments along with letters enclosed explaining the situation--after I called and got a name of a contact. Thanks again for caring, and sharing You are a major help.

    BARBARO-I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH

TO ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, PRAYERS FOR EACH ONE OF YOU, ONE AND ALL.

Robyn Hoffman-another thing, PLEASE-You need to post that recipe for those bourbon balls on the forum. Do ya have one for rum balls also? Man, I have not had either one since, 1982 when I was in Data Processing and there was WAY too much rum and bourbon in them!! WHEW!!

Good Night Precious Barbaro, so glad you got to see Mom today, really cool how she sits down with you, you are so loved. Then buddy Edgar coming to see you. Peter too. You are so precious and we all are so inspired by you. Our hero. I love you so much. Candles are lit, prayers said and time to tuck you in. Sleep tight big guy.

Sweet Warrior Foggy, forever in my heart. I love and miss you awful, sleep tight sweet prince.

Thank you Mrs. Jackson for your message to us, we will get this bill passed. We need to, our horse's lives are depending on us and we won't let them down!

Good night, sweet prince, after a day of wonders - lying in state, surrounded by such good and wonderful friends as Gretchen and Edgar, munching fresh green grass. I can only believe you deserve the very best, and you are enveloped in the cocoon of their love for you.

On this anniversay, we mark the first half of many years of wonders to come. It is a blessing to be in your world. Thank you for your courage, your passion, your intelligence - if we could all

    Be Like Barbaro...

the world would be a better place.

    Love you madly.

Good morning, Barbaro...my sweet baboo and wonder-horse. What a great day you had yesterday! :-)
Hoping for a good report later today. I love you, sweetie XOXOX

Shelley...I remember Dr.Ramos! It was Chance Rollins who nearly died in that accident and has made miraculous recovery, but I've always wondered about Dr.Ramos and what happened to him, and it's such news to know that he's safe, but who'd have thought he'd end up where he is!! That's made me very happy! :-)
