    Barbaro Updates: 138

    updates are now here.

Update 1072: I just spoke to Peter (5:40 pm) and while he had not heard from Michael yet this afternoon he knows Michael was visiting Barbaro. Peter assumes all is well given that he had not heard anything.

Fleet Indian has undergone surgery: Fleet Indian Has Fetlock Fused, Injury Occurred in Breeders' Cup and it is sad to report that Diesis has been euthanized: Champion and pensioned sire Diesis euthanized at age 26. Diesis was a great racehorse and sire.

Update 1071: A few links of interest. The first looks at the journey of Mike Rea. It provides much background of Mike's life, and is within the broader context of the Barbaro connection: Beyond Brokenness.... The second contrasts Fair Hill and Philadelphia Park. And finally, here's Barbaro's Baby Brother (note: a couple of months old I guess).

Update 1070: I just spoke to Andy Durnin at Hollywood Park. He breezed a few horses this morning on the Cushion Track and was happy with the surface. Lets hope the woes of the weekend are behind them.

Alie from Kennett Florist left this comment (timestamp: 6:01 pm):

I just return from NBC. All was great. Everyone happy & excited to see treats for man & Horse. There was a stampede by the staff, for the carrot cake, and chocolates. Corrine & I served it up.
I talked to Mrs. Jackson as I was going in. What a wonderful lady. The weather is sunny but a little cool. I would think the big guy will get out today. Have a good day. God Bless.

Update 1069: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (monday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was leaving the track from my first set. He had heard from Dr. Richardson. It was a chilly morning this morning for sure. Long johns are now required wear.

I caught up with Barclay Tagg by phone. Showing Up boarded a plane at 8:30 am this morning to head to California for the Hollywood Derby on sunday. He worked yesterday, I think in about 1: 02. A nice easy work to set him up for the weekend. NoBiz worked on sunday for his race on saturday (The Remsen). Barclay said it was a good work, he walked yesterday and galloped this morning.
update tuesday, november 21, 10:45 am

Ouiji Board is now in Japan getting ready for her race this sunday, the Japan Cup. Our final piece of stakes news for the weekend races, Red Aspen worked yesterday in preparation for the April Run Stakes at Laurel. She worked well (under Tim as usual). The April Run Stakes will likely be her biggest test to date.

Update 1068: A great article on synthetic tracks by Mike Jensen: Barbaro injury a 'wake-up call'. Much of the article includes quotes from Fair Hill people Kathy Anderson, Michael Matz and Graham Motion. (Michael Dickinson used to train at Fair Hill and owns the tapeta surface which Fair Hill is putting in place.) Here are a couple of excerpts:

Asked about the possibility of local tracks such as Philadelphia Park and Delaware Park going to an all-weather artificial surface, Motion said, " They'd be foolish not to jump on the bandwagon. Delaware has struggled with their entries all year. It changes it around. All of a sudden, if they get a Polytrack surface, they become the track that everybody wants to run at. It's that simple, really.

"I can't believe it wouldn't be worthwhile for them to do it. They go from being a place that's struggling to fill the entries to a place where everybody is going to want to be."

"Bigger fields means bigger handles," said Matz, who conditioned Round Pond to a victory in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, becoming the first trainer since D. Wayne Lukas in 1999 to have a Kentucky Derby winner and a Breeders' Cup winner in the same year. "Bigger handle means more people coming out to watch the races. And eventually, more people go to the casino. I just wish they would look at it that way."

    and

There are a lot of angles to consider - tracks in England tried a number of surfaces before hitting on the preferred one - but Motion said he sees one ultimate bottom line. He pointed to a newspaper on his desk at Fair Hill with a photograph of Pine Island off her feet rolling on her back during the Breeders' Cup. It was an image used in newspapers all over the country.

"Look," Motion said, "this is what we're trying to get away from."

The Barbaro update this morning may be delayed to after training hours, I am not sure yet. Please keep calling.

BARBARO - you gorgeous hunk of horsey...congratulations on your six-month anniversary. If anyone had told me on May 20th that we would have reason to be celebrating now, I would not have taken that bet! Bless you for your patience, endurance, courage, and intelligence! I can't think of a better way for you to celebrate yesterday than to have your dear mom and your heroic Edgar hunkered down in the straw with you. I love you, big boss horse!

Good morning Barbaro, Alex, and friends...I am still so up-lifted picturing Edgar and lovely Mrs. Jackson sitting with you in the hay...letting you keep the weight off the legs when you feel the need. You are the Champ Barbaro. We are all beginning the next six months of recovery with you...every little centimeter along the way. God be with you as he keeps you surrounded in the healing light of love and energy.

Good morning, Barbaro, and everyone. Hope to hear ACN for Bobby.

Nancy, I will say a prayer for Felix.

And while I'm here, I want to once again thank all of you who said a prayer for Bob and me when he had his heart surgery two weeks ago. He's been home eight days (goes back for re-evaluation and some tests next week), and seems to get a tad better each day; he was weak at a kitten when he first came home. He is obviously limited to what he can and can't do.....which means I have nurse, maid, and chauffeur duties in addition to my usual house and barn chores. As a result I've not gotten too much time on the computer. You're a great group and I'm glad to be part of it. God bless all of you.

The Jacksons are wonderful people, but I am worried about Barbaro - when he is better being sent to the Kentucky horse park. Even though he will get the best of care - I am sure he would love to be around the Jacksons, trainer and most important Dr. Richardson - all who love him. How often can they visit him in Kentucky? Even though the Jacksons said he may be back when he is old to PA. he may need to be around those who love him and who he loves. I know security is a issue, but even if they put aside some acres near them with high security for this wonderful horse.
I could never send my animal away and not see every day.

    Love always to Barbaro

Good Tuesday morning Alex, Bobby and fellow fans

Again more great reading material Alex. Thank you for providing it. There seems to be momentum now for polytrack. That warms our hearts. Now - if only we could get the same momentum for S.1915. I am grateful that there are so many FsOB committed to the cause and pray that all will have a successful day of calling.

    ***** STRATEGY FOR THANKSGIVING RECESS*******

We were unable to get our bill to the floor before the recess and, as of now, it doesn’t look like it will be attached to the Agriculture Appropriations Bill.

This is NOT acceptable and we have been asked to raise a public outcry by flooding the phone lines

It’s final crunch time and we’ve been asked to remain focused for the next two weeks.

Contact these Senators to ask for action on The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act in any vehicle before adjournment.

John Ensign = phone @ office in Las Vegas - 702-388-6605

Please call the above local offices in addition to the DC offices.

Also, contact your own senators both locally and in DC.

It is urgent that we get as much support as possible in the final weeks of our mission. I’ve got to be honest with you guys, it’s not looking great!!!

    Good morning all
Waiting for the good word about King Barbaro this morning! Well, king of our hearts anyway.

    Julie,
Cecil looks very comfy in that pic. They are all precious. I'm glad you posted a pic of Lola. It helps to visualize when prayers go out for her.
    Joyce Curry,
I'm glad your hubby is getting stronger, for his sake and for yours. I know you have your plate full. Try to take care of yourself too. God bless you both.
    DoraJ,
I'm a dental hygienist, I wish I could have had Parker for his first dental visit. I work for a general dentist but we have about 25% kids in the practice. They are so much fun to work with. Usually much easier than adults. I don't have kids so I really get a kick out of talking to them. Anyway, I'm glad his visit went good.

Also, about KY horse park...It's a great place for a horse to live, check out their website. IF the Jacksons send him there it WILL BE in his best interest. Everything they have done has been in his best interest and I promise you that will not change. I love Barbaro but they raised him, raced him, petted him, fed him hand picked grass and pretty much visited him DAILY. Oh, and did I mention gladly paid his HUGH medical bills? In light of that I have to say they probably love him more than I do and definitely KNOW him personally better than any of us. It's their decision and I feel very confident that whatever they decide WILL be best for Barbaro.

Alex, I sure hope all the tracks go synthetic. I don't know a lot about it, but there are too many injuries on what they have now. Again, I don't know anything about all that, but I know it breaks my heart every time a horse is put to sleep/death because of injuries due to racing.
On a more positive note, I hope Barbaro had another comfortable night! Kudos to Mrs. Jackson and Edgar for their visit. I know that has to please Barbaro!
Hang in there, Barbaro! Grow, hoof, grow!!!!
Well, my biscuits are due out of the oven so I have to cook breakfast. But I'll check back later to see that Big B is doing quite well.

    A little snippet on Fondmort...

The best news to emerge from Seven Barrows yesterday, though, was that stable favourite Fondmort, seriously injured two weeks ago today as he was poised for his first run of the season, is continuing to progress in hospital. Almost too well, in fact; the vets looking after the 10-year-old must now introduce a little discomfort - nature's own regulator - into his life, for his own good. "He's so well he wants to move," said Henderson, "but he mustn't be allowed to, so his dose of painkillers has been dropped."

Fondmort, who fractured his pelvis, will not race again, and fingers in his yard are still tightly crossed for his recovery. "He still wants another week at least on 24-hour attention," said Henderson. "The vets don't want him left alone at night. The danger will be when he gets to that stage."

JOYCE CURRIE - glad to hear that Bob is progressing well...just like Barbaro, little baby steps toward the greater goal. I didn't realize that you have horses (lucky girl!), so you are really overextended right now - hope you have some extra help!
FYI - Felix is Susan E's elderly cat who is having surgery this morning for a tumor on his leg (hopefully it has not invaded the bone)...and Maizie is my elderly cat who has designated herself his girlfriend!

To Kathy Smith re sending Barbaro to the Ky Horse Park.

I understand your concern but please know that the horses sent to the Horse Park are as pampered and loved as you can imagine. I have had the privilege of visiting with Cigar in person there ( one of the great thrills of my life was being photographed next to him in his paddock.) The horses in the "Star" barn get assigned specific grooms who become very attached and know each and every one of the horses' "quirks." I also understand that their connections are allowed liberal visitation times. In short, if the Jacksons ultimately make the decision to send him there, he will be very well taken care of.

In reading the B'more Sun article, it seemed to me that Mrs. Jackson was saying the Kentucky Horse Park option was because they couldn't handle the security needs and fan traffic that having Barbaro at Lael Farms would entail. I've been to the Kentucky Horse Park (getting a nuzzle and a lick from John Henry while I was there!) and it's true that the horses are loved and pampered. Nonetheless, I think Barbaro needs to be with the people HE loves best, who have helped him through this time of pain and crisis. I don't think he would be doing so well were it not for the Jacksons, Peter Brette and Michael Matz being there with him every day, despite the excellent care and attention from New Bolton. I'd rather have Barbaro living a happy private life at Lael with Mrs. Jackson's daily presence than have the opportunity to see him myself.

Maybe those of us who feel this way should send a letter to the Jacksons? I'd volunteer to organize such a thing but my computer skills don't go that far!!

Christy from Last Chance for Horses posted on DB that many horses went to slaughter from New Holland sale last night as there were very few private buyers. Please God, we need to stop this.

Wanted to acknowledge Hirapour, an old warrior who came in third to McDynamo in the steeplechase this weekend. He pulled up lame after finishing third and is now retired. All the best to him in his new life - he deserves it.

PLEASE KEEP CALLING, FAXING, SHOUTING...PASS THIS BILL...PASS THIS BILL!!!!!

I have mixed emotions about our loved Barbaro...
He loves, the Jacksons, Dr. R, Peter, Michael, and is so use to them....

Also, Kentucky Horse Park takes care of their horses also...If they decide later on when Barbaro is ready to move him to Kentucky...maybe someone he knows will go with him for awhile til he gets use to his surroundings.

The Jacksons, and Dr. R...always does what is right and my faith is in them. We all pray for guidance and hope we always have an update because this makes my day.

Good morning everyone. Some really great interesting articles lately

Re: Barbaro at the Kentucky Horse Park.

It occured to me reading that article that Mrs Jackson has truley become to understand that He is America's Horse. We have been discussing his "destiny" all along. Even though they "own him" ,they have always eagerly shared him
with the public. I think they know that even though they love him, that they must let him fulfill his new potential and his new role as Thorougbred Racehorse Ambassador of Forever. I am sure they will protect his interests and his safety. I get the feeling that Mrs Jackson wants to give back some of the love that has been shown to Team Barbaro and Barbaro himself. I believe they known that he will be well cared for, and it will be for the greater good. If it turns out that Babby is not happy there, I am sure they can move him.
Anyways...thats just the feeling I got when I read her comments. I'm sure we'll hear more as time progresses.

    Have a great day everyone.

I would not mind selling it, etc...I would love to get a place now...if had to, here in Texas instead of the RV living..and maybe have a few acres...til we can retire years from now back to Tennesee and the small farm...

Called Senator Chambliss's office in Atlanta

    770-763-9090

The young lady's name is Brittney, very nice. Steven Meeks is the State Director and the person we need to talk to about S.1915. He will not be in until Monday, but if everyone could flood his voice mail stating your support for S.1915, it might help.

I know Steven personally and am hoping that with the floods of calls, we will be able to make a statement as I will be begging and pleading for Senator Chambliss to cosign.

PLEASE CALL 770-763-9090 and ask Brittney to please transfer you to Steven Meeks' voice mail

This would mean alot, it's not for me, but for the horses.

If there are any Senators that you would like for us to contact, please post and we can join together.

It's OK Renee. I couldn't hurt a fly, but I love target shooting. It is dog dumping season here in northern NM. I try to rescue 2-3 dogs on the highway each morning. I can NEVER get them to come to me because they are so traumatized. As a result, by 8AM each day, I am very angry with humans and it takes me a while to 'chill'.

    ###Margie

Had a chiropractor girlfriend and while she was in CA on vacation she was driving along the freeway and spotted a person throwing a dog out the window of the car in front of her. She stopped her car and also the immediate traffic, picked up the little guy who was mildly injured and brought him back to NC. He is the sweetest little guy you ever did see. She named him "Freeway"!

Renee, yes, it happens every year. Young people come here in the Spring to tune in, turn on, and drop out. While they are here they gather puppies that are offered throughout town, in boxes or carts, usually with a sign - FREE!. Then as soon as the weather starts getting cold, the summer people start leaving and these dogs get dumped at the last rest stops on the way out of town, or just left behind to fend for themselves. It's a spay and neuter problem as well as disregard for the animal. Both Tom and Lucky are dumped rescues. All of my dogs over the years have come into my life this way. And they have all been extremely special and very entertaining.

D'Anne, Lucky was tossed out of the back of a pick up, a big box full of puppies. This is common also, to dump pups and kittens out in the sage for the coyotes. Anyway, I was able to get Lucky because he was very injured. For days I tried to get the others, but none of them would come to me. They just kept running. Eventually, they all 'disappeared'. Lucky's injury is lifelong.

    There's no place like home.
I'm very concerned about the Baltimore Sun Article's quote from Mrs. Jackson
"He's too much of America's horse now," she said. "I don't believe we could handle all the things that would have to be done - the preparation for visitors, the security. I think the Kentucky Horse Park, it might just be where he needs to go."

I know the Jackson's have made great decisions to this point, but I don't believe it would be in Barbaro's best interest to go to Kentucky Park. I would hate to think that due to Barbaro's celebrity status that he would be not be able to go home. Kentucky Park Horse Farm sounds too commercial and I'm sure any true fans would respect his and the Jackson's Privacy to allow him to return to his comfort zone "his home". I have great respect for the Jackson's; however, I hope they change their opinion on this one. To our sweet Barbaro, and inspiration for his fortitude, strength of will, and character, many more comfortable days and grow-hoof-grow.

From Update 1064...I did ask her about Edgar's visit. She mentioned that when she was with Edgar visiting Barbaro Barbaro was lying down, feet forward eating the grass Mrs. Jackson brought along. Edgar was able to sit down next to Barbaro and talk to him. In Mrs. Jackson's words ... he loves the horse, its a true relationship!

Help me with something. I envision his legs stretched out straight in front of him. A horse can do that? Any pictures available of a horse laying with his legs out front.

Made my calls this AM. I got some feedback from some of the aides: Landrieu's office said "it is one of her top priorities". Ensign's office said "we are hoping for the best". Landrieu's office in lA said "we are getting a lot of calls about it so she is well aware." Nobody said it was a dead deal, but nobody said it was a shoe-in either way. So, unless it is January 1st and we have resorted to starting over, we must keep calling every single day. Believe me, I'm just as sick of calling as everyone else, but we have to make it part of our daily agenda, just as brushing our teeth is. KEEP CALLING! THERE IS STILL HOPE!!!

Kathy J--how sweet!!! What is your Beagle's name?

That is how I found little baby Lola 7 years ago--dirty little tiny abandoned kitten in a ditch, her face covered in spider web. She MARCHED out of that ditch, walked right up to me and said Mow-Mow!!! Like, "HEY! I need a little assistance here!!!" And, like Kathy's Beagle, the light of the house ever since.

    Felix

There will be no surgery today. Xrays show the cancer has gotten into the bone. When he wakes up, he's coming home. Vet will forward Xrays to specialist for second opinion, which will take about a week. Vet advises against amputation given his age and overall health, plus cats need their back legs. At this point, Felix probably has one-two months, maybe less depending on pain. The monster is still growing.

    At least we tried.

I am so, so sorry, and in tears, to hear the news.

But please, even though it is so hard, try to have faith, Tyrone (The long haired black kitty on my site) had cancer in his hind leg too. He was given only a couple of months but lived an ENTIRE YEAR! The lump was huge but Tyrone was not in pain and trudged on. As Cora said, Felix will let you know when it is time to go. Tyrone let me know and it was a beautiful, peaceful day.

And when that time comes we will all be here with you to help you through it.

I lost four of my cats to different types of cancer, and my Gabriella has kidney cancer as we speak. Every animal handles it differently (also, no doubt depending on where the cancer is). Whatever you do, do not discount the idea of giving medications to ease pain, cause remission, etc.

Gabriella has been on a basic antibiotic, Clavamox, which has been giving her relief from the discomfort and bleeding. I noticed a couple days ago that it doesn't seem to be as effective any more, but I'm hoping Peter will be able to give her something else.

He kept my Jessica going for a year, and I had another last for several months.

    Keep good thoughts!!

Barbaro has always struck me as a horse that knows what he wants and he knows how to get it.

When he wants to cross the finish line first, boy does he do it.

When he needs to communicate to humans, he just looks 'em straight in the eye and says "hey what about me? huh?"

When he knows that cooperation is needed for his own good, he does not fight.

I have the greatest confindence in Barbaro that he will take care of himself in every phase of his life. He has shown us time and time again that he is very adept at living life and giving it his all.... no matter what he is faced with.

I believe that his connections are vividly aware of his spirit and will always let
    Barbaro BE Barbaro.

I have 10 dogs because of idiots that didn't bother to have dogs spayed and neutered. People dump dogs around here too. I just can't take anymore dogs, don't have the finances. When I find them now they go to the vets office and most times get a home but if not they have to be euthanized. It makes me want to puke but I just can't financially take care of anymore. God bless all of you that take in strays.

I think you were the one asking about horses laying down with their legs stretched out in front. Yes they can do that. I saw 3 or 4 this morning on my way home like that in the pastures. It does look funny though. I don't think they do that very often. I rarely see my do it.

Hosestly I don't think it would fair to you. Every animal is different. Bailley lived for six months after her hind leg amputation and loosing an eye. Her attitude was excellent and I had to keep mine up for her. They have a very special way of letting us know. I was told as long as they eat and drink it's good, mine did on her last day, so each one is different. A big HUG for you Susan.

    Susan E,

I am so sorry about Felix. It is true that you will know when it is time. I've had to put two of my own down . I stayed with them and it was very quick and peaceful. I am not sure how old Felix is or if the cancer has spread, but cats can do very well in most cases with a back leg amputation. I know-- my Buster had his right leg amputated at the hip last December at age 7 and he runs, jumps and climbs as well as he always did ( if a little crooked!)A second opinion may help with that decision. If you go that route, you'll need to make some accomodations re the litter box and keeping him from too much climbing for the first couple of months. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Hi All
I just return from NBC.
God Bless.

    Hello all,

Let's do this today, make the rest of our calls/faxes/e-mails in honor of Felix, Daryl's cats, bdude, Daisy, and all the rest that admittedly I can't name right now (I'm STILL trying to catch up on posts from being gone) I apologize for this but know that every one of those fur kids is in my heart right now.

Felix knows that this is very important to his mom, so let's go for it and do as many calls as possible this afternoon.

    Love to all.

Also, Renee co-mom, glad you're better!

I may be in the minority, but I really hope that the Jackson's do not send Barbaro to the Kentucky Horse Park.
The turnout is small, limited and while I'm sure the breeding farms aren't equipted for the size crowds that can be expected with a Barbaro in the barn, the Kentucky Horse Park isn't the right fit, either.

I hope they keep looking. I say this with all the respect of a loyal fan, too.

Susan E...I'm so sorry about Felix. When my Cody was diagnosed with bone cancer the vet told me that she would let me know when it was time, and she did. The bone specialist gave her 3 weeks and it was 3 months later when she told us she was hurting. I'd made a promise I wouldn't let her suffer. It's going to be very hard letting go. Just pamper him, spoil him with all his favourite treats (Cody loved breast of lamb and sausages!) and let him know he's loved.

When I called Senator Ensign's office today, the aide said to be sure to call your own senator and ask them to sign his letter which asks that this be brought up for a vote. I thought that was what Senator Landrieu's letter did but she didn't seem to know anything about her letter. But she really stressed asking your own senator to sign Senator Ensign's letter. Anyone know more about it? Thanks.

Another comfortable night. Two weeks out of the cast. What a good boy!

Half a year - unbelieveable. But truth to tell, from the moment I heard the announcement that the connections were going for the "save" - I have had no doubt.

    ##########
Reflecting on finding homes for adoptable horses/dogs/cats:

ZONING LAWS create a thorn in the side of all animal rescuers, dog and cat as well as horse.

Example - the other night I ran into a horselover who announced that he & his family had just found some property in Michigan where they were hoping to be able to keep horses, but the local zoning laws prohibited it - they required I think 2 acres minimum to keep a horse. If the zoning laws were changed/relaxed, more people would be able to adopt horses who will need rescuing especially after HS is banned.

And with household animals (dogs/cats) - many municipalities have an arbitrary (example, 3 or 5) animal maximum per household, which
eliminates lots of good homes for shelter animals who need adoptive homes.

One place we can start in seeking to end the madness both of HS and unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable household animals for lack of shelter space, is to create more potential homes by changing the arbitrary and oppressive zoning laws.

Just my opinion - it IS a factor that needs changing.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

Hope Peace Love Music & RESPECT - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

Any insight why Reid is the holdup?

Posted by: cathy potter/california at November 21, 2006 7:09 PM

    Jo in the UK,

Thanks so much for the update on Fondmort...

Posted by: Jo (UK) at November 21, 2006 1:55 PM

It sounds like good news to me! Fondmort is a beautiful horse. I felt a kinship between he and Barbaro when I first read about his attitude and spirit. Still sending prayers and lighting candles for his complete recovery.

Joyce, so glad to hear your Bob is getting better. One day at a time just like our Bobby, your Bobby will get back to normal. Hope it's soon.

Blessings to all who need them today. Lord please watch over Felix.

Renee, How many greyhounds do you have? My brother and his wife now have four beautiful, sweet greyhounds. My sister-in-law traveled to Florida to adopt their latest puppy a few months ago. Apparently, the guy who owned the mother greyhound decided she wasn't good for racing anymore and wanted to get rid of her. When she was rescued it was discovered that she was pregnant. (The guy who owned her didn't know this. Good thing too, I would hate for the mother or any of her puppies to end up with him) The greyhound rescue organization contacted my sister-in-law and now we have another "baby" in the family. They truly are the nicest, sweetest, most gentle dogs.

Thank you Alex for the great articles yesterday. I just love Mrs. Jackson and Edgar Prado. Great visual of them sitting next to Barbaro talking to him. What wonderful people!

Posted by: Karen in Las Vegas at November 21, 2006 7:10 PM

Those stupid zoning laws do nothing to protect animals, and they don't prevent animal cruelty or abuse.

The only thing they DO prevent is to prevent good, caring people from adopting more animals.

Towns and municipalities would benefit from changing those rules. More animals means more vaccinations, more county, state or whatever tags, more purchases in stores-again more taxes.

They should go after people who abuse animals, NOT penalize the ones who care about their critters!!

    Stupid politician tricks strike again!!!!!!

SusanE - healing energy and prayers for you & Felix. Do NOT give up -- definitely get a second opinion and see what your options are.

My Lyla had salivary gland carcinoma and for many reasons we opted not to do surgery. Doc said she would live maybe 6 months, she lived 18 months, and enjoyed a VERY good quality of life. Prednisolone helped quite a bit, as did hand feeding. Believe me, I was her slave the entire time!

Yes, I'd also be interested in hearing about Reid as the holdup--when I spoke to his aide in Washington about 20 minutes ago, he said to call Frist, who as Commerce chair is the one who needs to make this move--could this be the specter of partisan politics???

Posted by: Sallie at November 21, 2006 7:21 PM

    Hi Karen,
I am on my second one. They are the sweetest most docile dog. I just love them. Believe it or not they use them for medical experiments due to their docil nature, and you can do anything to them. Medical Universities like to get
them. Breeders too, due to the money they can make, then they get euthanized due to overbreeding.(59,000 a year) The industry is better than it use to be but still has a long way to go. The abuse and starvation is horrible to see. Sorry for running at the mouth.

    Good afternoon all:
Middle of the day. Let’s have some fun news stuff. If you have seen the pic with Barbaro and the cat, well, that’s my cat. He is my spy and he reports everything Barbaro! Last night Barbaro snuck Mocha into his stall for a little music, dinner and a movie. Here’s the text version of the audio my cat sent back:
B: Come on in, Mocha! M: Thanks! My what a big pad you have.
B: They don’t call me The Big Boss Horse for nothing! Hey, would you like to hear some music?
M: Sure B: What kind of music do you like? M: Oh, anything from Mootown! Hay, you do have a TV! How’d you manage that? B: I had my butlers and maids bring it in a while back so I could watch the Belmont and I had them leave it. M: Cool! Hay, have you thought about what you are going to do after you get out of the hospital? B: Well, I thought I’d go into acting, you know, movies and such! But I gave that idea up. M: Why? B: Well, those people are weird. They’re always telling you to break a leg. Ain’t happening! Been there, done that! M: Do you get mad at Dr. R when he leaves you for a few days? B: Oh yeah! But I get even. I steal his golf balls and put funny marks on the surface with my teeth. That makes ’em fly funny. I hope his handicap is going up! M: And I heard Mrs. Jackson said you might be going to Kentucky? What do you think of that? B: It’s a beautiful state but I’m worried about dinner! I’ve never eaten Blue Grass!
Hay, maybe I can move into Kennett Florist! I can eat all my treats right there and then they won’t have to travel back and forth to NBC. M: But there’s treats for Dr. R and staff! What about them? B: Hmm! Tough one!…… Got it! I’ll make sure everyone gets their treat but Dr. R. More payback for leaving me alone! Scarred golf balls and no treats! Got ‘em! M: I can’t believe you have such a tough streak in you! B: Hay, I’m a competitor! Undefeated on the racetrack, Kentucky Derby Champion! Don’t mess with me!
M: What have you been watching on TV lately? B: CSPAN! Waiting for the senate to get to S. 1915! M: Are you worried they won’t get to it? B: Well, you never know what’s going to happen. But I’ve got my army on it! M: You have an army? B: YUP! My army of FOBs!
M: What’s a FOB? B: Fans Of Barbaro! A group of nationwide people who are loyal to me and dedicated and hard working to end that stupid cruel industry! M: Sounds like wonderful people!
B: The best! M: You are a lucky horse! B: Yes, I know! Hay, can you excuse me for a moment? I have to mark up a few more golf balls!
Hope you enjoyed the report! By the way, I need donations to pay for the raise my cat demands!

For Karen's HELP on PMU Foals:I don't know how to make Blue Links. Any MONSTERS out there?

Winter has come early in Alberta—and that’s bad news for the mares and foals living on PMU ranches there. No longer needed for the production of hormone replacement therapy drugs, these equines need a place to go, and fast.

Because there is not enough grass to leave the animals on pasture, several of the PMU ranchers have decided to wean their foals at the end of the month. Any foals who have not been adopted by November 30, 2006, will be sent to auction—and an uncertain fate.

The California-based Animali Farm is working hard to find good adoptive homes for the more than 100 foals and mares facing the November 30 deadline. If you can give one of these equines a second chance, or if you would like additional information, please visit Animali Farm online or email animali@aol.com. You can also call them directly at (805) 938-0174.

If you cannot adopt a horse, please forward this email to all of your horse friends. The only way to get these babies adopted is to get the word out to enough people, and we need your help to do it.

Thank you so much for caring.

    Cora,
With 10 dogs and 5 horses I'm breaking all the zoning rules!! I think I can have legally 4 dogs and 2 horses even though I have 55 acres! Very, very stupid. Fortunately, the rules are not strickly enforced. But if someone complained...
I've also had greyhounds, the only dogs I've ever owned that I went and found instead if them finding me! Great, great pets. They are very quite, gentle, mannerly dogs. They don't know alot of common things if you get them off the track, like TV, bed, steps. I've had to teach all of them how to go up steps, they haven't been exsposed to much except at the track.

    Back to the phone!

Funny you should say that about steps. It took me, John and my neighbor to teach Lily how to do steps. Funniest thing I'd seen in years.

She was so timid when he first got her, but now that he's had her for a few years her personality has really come through.

    They sure are neat dogs!!

I was this close (visualize thumb & index finger one quarter inch apart) to getting an acre when the real estate market here took a dump. Everything was predicated on selling my house for x amount. Would have enough room for a couple rescue horses. I have to believe it wasn't meant to be at this time but another opportunity will present itself.

    Hello everyone,

My mommy took me to see another surgeon today and I gave him heck. But he told my mom that, if she could keep me quiet for a couple of weeks, I might avoid surgery. That is what surgeon #1 said too. So this is good news. Please pray for my mommy that she can keep me from getting the "crazies" during the day so I do not reinjure myself.

I'd also like to thank you all for praying for me, and for today could you divert all my prayers to my furry friend Felix? He needs them more than me today and I know he will have extra quality time if we just all pull for him.

    Lots of love and head-bumps,

Subject: Time Is Running Out for 100 PMU Foals--Please Help Us Spread the Word!

Forward this email to a friend

View the list of adoptable foals
Some of the foals who need homes: [end of email from ASPCA][links in the email I got did not copy]

Just wanted to pass this info on to you all here, and would appreciate if someone could please post at the Forum/Discussion Board where I still cannot post. THANK YOU.

Susan E--my heart goes out to you, my friend. I lost two kitties to cancer. Remember, it's not the length of our lives, but the quality. Little Felix will enjoy your love for as long as possible. And a cat can live without a hind leg. My neighbor's cat had a hind leg amputated, and he is still alive. Odie is 21 yrs. old. Please know that you and Felix are in my prayers.

And friends--I think Kentucky Horse Park is a great idea, provided Barbaro is not busy with the fillies. I visited John Henry and Cigar there. It brings tears to my eyes to think of the incredible generosity of the Jacksons. They have been selfless since day one. They restore my faith that there are good, fine people in the Thoroughbred industry. God bless all of the farms who have graciously allowed visitors to see these magnificent animals. Every day, despite the bad things we hear about, I see so much good news about people who truly care for their animals.

The sentence in your last post makes me think of the Anne Frank's words "Despite everything I still believe people are really good at heart"

    Good afternoon all:
I called Senator Reid's office in D.C. I asked specifically what the senator's position is. The aide said he THOUGHT he was for the bill. I asked if one of his aides who are assigned to the issude for research could call me back. He said calls would be returned to only Nevada residents. He said, hold on...., Nevada residents only because he did not want to spend taxpayer money on LD calls. Yeah! Then I called his office in Nevada. The gal was very nice, said they are getting a lot of calls. She also said the senator looks at calls on a particular issue in two ways: Nevada residents calls and calls from around the country! She assured me the calls are making a difference. So it's simple. Call, call, call!

Thanks! WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

I was a vegetarian for years but came to realize I felt better eating meat, well fish, chicken mostly. There's a great book "Eat Right For Your Blood Type". It provides information on the kind of foods suitable for the different blood types. I find it very fascinating and sure enough Type B should eat meat. Type A on the other hand is most comfortable as a vegetarian. What blood type are you- if you don't mind me asking?

Hi JO (UK) - Thanks much for the update on Fondmort, I did send him a card and note, and included a note to his people, too. Was wondering how things were, thanks so much!

    JOYCE CURRIE -
So glad to hear about Bob, wish I was nearby so could give you a hand with something - don't forget to just take a few minutes to sit down for YOU, too, it's important! My Dad (81) actually had three open-heart surgeries (via sternotomy) so my Mom and I understand and are thinking of you and Bob, prayers, too!

ALEX is right about those "long-johns" (smile), I had not heard anyone call them that other than my Dad. I just finished planting the last of my bulbs and just about froze my bottom off. Gotta go get my hands warm!!

Lots of prayers and hugs to all who need them, furry and people friends, love you all.

Hello to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

Holy Cow! We just had a BIG (for WA state at any rate) thunderstorm move through here! It was spectacular, with thunder and lightning, pouring rain! It is now gone, but what a show!

So far I have Emailed a bunch of Senators: Frist 6 times, Obama 2 times, Durbin 2 times, Cornyn 2 times, Hutchison 2 times, McConnell 2 Times, Landrieu 2 times, and Ensign 2 times.

Somebody whose name I don't remember offhand, suggested, via this board, that we call, fax, Email, etc. Obama, Durbin, Cornyn, Hutchison, Boxer, Feinstein, Baucus, Burns, and Grassley, as well as the ones called for in Shelley's Thanksgiving Recess Strategy instructions, hence, the new names. I feel that anything will help in advancing S1915's chances for passage. Still looking for a format that will sound persuasive without being overdramatic, so I am open to suggestions as to what I can tell these Senators in my Emails!

Well, Back to more Emailing, now that the wind has died down and the thunderstorm is gone!

    Cheryl,
Don't know if you saw my post above to Julie L. talking about blood type and diet. It's based a book that has as its premise that considering your blood type there's certain foods that help you feel better and loose weight. What is your blood type?

    ******************************************

    Julie L.
The so called "universal Blood Type" is the Type O. This is the oldest blood type, indicating that your ancestral heritage is linked to a certain geographical area where certain foods existed that your ancestors ate. I am a type B which is not as old. It is a fascinating idea that I can really relate to! Type O's can eat meat, fish, poultry. They are the original Hunter-Gatherers. However, if you feel better not eating meat I would really pay attention to that, or check out the book and see what is right for you.

I love the baby brother video. Has he been named yet? "Baby Brother" is a great name.

Mike's article touches my heart. I know that God is holding his child in his arms every minute of every day.

    Pamela,

Since you ask, here is a quote from the first paragraph on the Blood Type A. "Type As flourish on vegetarian diets-the inheritance of their more settled and less warlike farmer ancestors. If you are an average American with Type A blood, you might find it too big an adjustment to move away from the typical meat and potato fare to soy proteins, grains and vegetables. Likewise, you may find it difficult to eliminate overly processed and refined foods, since our civilized diets are increasingly composed of convenient toxins in brightly wrapped packages. But it is particularly important for sensitive Type As to get their foods in as natural a state as possible: fresh, pure and organic." From "Eat Right for your Blood Type" Dr. Peter J. D"Adamo

    Everyone,

I contacted Harry Reid's office. Since he is Nevada's Senator, I will keep pushing for his support of S1915. The aide I spoke to in his office was very nice. He will be asking Senator Reid to respond via email as soon as possible. As soon as I get the response, I will post it here.

Let's not lose steam now Family! We're gettin' closer! Keep calling, faxing, and praying! We are a powerful group, we have seen miracles happen. Let's make this one happen!

At the copa (co!) copacabana (copacabana)
The hottest spot north of havana (here)
    At the copa (co!) copacabana
Music and passion were always in fashion
At the copa.... they fell in love

    His name was rico
    He wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw lola dancing there
And when she finished,he called her over
But rico went a bit to far
    Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
    But just who shot who?

    Repeat chorus

At the copa... she lost her love

Her name is lola, she was a showgirl,
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it’s a disco, but not for lola,
Still in dress she used to wear,
    Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her tony
    Now she’s lost her mind

    Repeat chorus

At the copa... don’t fall in love
    Don’t fall in love"

    Hey Barbaro sweet prince!

Bet you had a good day huh? got out to graze and gaze, munch on goodies, hobnobbing with visitors, and now it's time to hit the hay! Tucking you in, fluffing the bedding, turning on the nite lite, whispering a lullabye in your beautiful ears!...Hugs and smooochies, babycakes!

    Hi everyone....

Seems like everyone is buzzing about the new little man in our lives....or as Julie L has affectionately named him "Baby Boss Horse", which is adorable for an adorable big colt. Are we sure he is only a couple months old, cause he looks like a handful already? Wow. Is he a looker. My screen was a little dark, but he seems just full of himself. Lovely boy. Regarding the family reunion...I don't know if Barbaro would be up for those antics of a little brother.

Hope everyone is hunkered down tonite. It's pretty chilly here by the lake. Enjoy your evening everyone.

Blessings to those in need, and special blessings to the Big Boss Horse, and the Baby Boss Horse!

Hiya, Bobbey! Tonight I read the story about the injuries that you and Mike Rea sustained earlier this year. It brought tears to my eyes! You are both such incredibly courageous spirits. May your evening be a good one, sweet prince. Please rise to great the new day with gusto! Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

    #### Excellent news, Jo, about Fondmort's continued progress. What a miracle!
To Julie L.: The news about Lola sounds encouraging. Hang in there.
To Susan E.: I am truly sorry to read of the feedback from Felix's surgeon. Please treasure your days with him and know how fortunate he is to have such a caring human as his "Mum".
To Daryl: Loved the Barbaro/Mocha conversation!
To Dora & Julie: Here you go! Bourbon Ball recipe of Elizabeth Apperley Hoffmann, a 7th generation Kentuckian (1908-2002). (Please note that I make double this recipe for ~ 60 bourbon balls.) One cup each of the following: vanilla wafer crumbs; powdered sugar; & crushed walnuts. Three TBSP cocoa. 1-1/2 TBSP of Karo corn syrup. 1/4 cup*** of Maker's Mark Bourbon. Mix dry ingredients, then add syrup and Bourbon. Cover the mixing bowl and store in frig for ~ one day. Then roll the Bourbon balls by hand and roll into extra powdered sugar. *** Being a "booze hound", I double the amount of Bourbon for each single batch. Therefore, a double recipe uses one cup of Maker's Mark in my tipply kitchen. Please warn any abstemious souls NOT to eat these. ####

    Hello Barbaro,

Did Michael get a chance to visit you today? If he did, I hope you boys enjoyed being outside and grabbing a little fresh air.

Well, Honey. It's that time and you know why I'm here. My family and I are calling it an early night so I hope you don't mind...

I see your blanket in the far corner of your stall. Why don't you grab it Honey and cuddle up, nice and warm. Pull it up close to your neck.

Soon Thanksgiving will be here and I wish many loving visits for you Barbaro. May every loved one treat you to something yummy. After all, it will be Thanksgiving for you too!

Now close your eyes and dream the sweetest dreams Honey. Tomorrow will bring visits and treats, grazing and smiles. May the healing continue through the night and strength carry you through your day tomorrow.

You know I love you. I wish you good night. Sleep well Honey. You are loved. XXOO

The most important thing is that your Blood Type is B. The RH factor plays a minor role when considering right foods for yourself. I am a B and generally they can eat vegtables, some meat and dairy, etc. The book has lists of all the beneficial foods, plus some recipes. "Eat Right for Your Blood Type", Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo

On one leg of my trip, Gatwick to the US, I sat next to a man who turned out to be responsible for training police officers in Afgahnistan. He was coming home for a break. Turns out he owns three horses and was shocked to hear about the SH. He was under the impression they had been shut down. He was going to share this information with his son in Colorado who also owns horses.

Have been having problems with my computer. My son gave me his laptop as a gift, he is a sweetheart. I offered to buy it from him and he won't let me pay him.

All the Aides I talked to, where very supportive. The young lady in Senator Reid's office sounded very sympathetic and said she completely understood.

    DEBBIE L.A. and DORA -

Tomorrow I will be calling your Senators in Alabama and add several more to my list of Illinois and MN.

Many of you may have cell phones that may include no charges for calls made after a specific time, PLEASE take advantage of those plans and call other Senators and leave messages on their voice mails. Calling after hours there won't be anyone asking for your address. PLEASE CALL THE SENATORS.

    FRIAR TUCK -

Thank you for your support and posting the the strategy and phone numbers early in the morning.

Love the recipe for the bourbon balls; made me laugh. Years ago someone brought an enormous tin of b'balls to the office at Xmas. The kitchen was in a little alcove...I came around the corner and found two secretaries kneeling on the floor in front of the utility table, cramming bourbon balls into their mouths by the handful and giggling up a storm.

Naturally, I had to take the tin and its remaining contents somewhere safe, for the good of all... :)

I want to thank everyone again. Please forgive my doing so generally; everyone has been so kind and solicitious; too many to name! It has been a very rough day, but then, too many of us have had rough days, weeks, and months over the past six months. Having a place like this to come to, and friends like you, makes it better.

Bobby, sweet Velvet Nose, I'm going to tuck you in now. Tomorrow will be a campaign day for you and the horses. Meanwhile, I am thrilled at your progress! Sleep well and heal, and dream of all of your wonderful friends who care so much. Be careful getting up and down, and no clowning! Have ACN, and I'll see you tomorrow for Thanksgiving Eve day and ACD!

Just a thought - it took Big B four months to grow 25-30% of his hoof, so that means that it will take approximately seven more months to have a full hoof. That is unless the growth speeds up which it could as things start to heal. So, it could be next late spring or early summer that he's fit to leave NBC. That's a long haul for anyone but if you just take one day at a time then it's not so daunting!

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at November 22, 2006 5:23 AM

Evening, all - those of you still up, and those who will read in the morning. Today on TB Friends Joe mentioned that he, out of season, really, had just found a new wasps' nest. After reading today's page, someone went back to July, 2004, and found Joe's archived page referencing hornets found then, and reposted it on the forum. It is so funny and poignant that I thought anyone who doesn't go to the forum would enjoy it...

    (2124.290 in reply to 2124.289)
    =========================================
I had to post this archive based on Joe's comments about the wasps in today's diary.

    -----------------------------------

Tuesday, July 13th...(2004) I am writing this the night before, as the shoer is coming very early Tuesday morning. So anyway, remember when I was saying that Monday sucks, and already we have had a broken water float and escaped horses? Well things went way downhill from there. I have only a couple of rules in life, and one of them is I never take my shirt off in public. My breasts keep getting bigger and I would never want to scare a small child. But on Monday I was all alone on the ranch and the sun felt good so off came the shirt while I was working. I was sweeping spiderwebs from the side of the barn when I hit a hornets nest. There are stakes winning racehorses on this ranch who would not have been able to catch me because I was running so fast. I still got nailed by a couple of angry hornets. Twice on my left arm and once on my fat belly. Man that hurts. And never again, not even in the shower, will I ever take my shirt off. God is telling me something.

Nlotsofbutter has a badly broken ankle and the vet says she needs stall rest for about 100 years. I like to take stall bound horses for a daily walk. It is good mental health to let them see some daylight and talk to the pasture horses. Well Nlotsofbutter got a little excited and swung her head and smashed me in the face. This has happend to me dozens of times in my life. A big fat horse head crashes into my big fat nose. Man that hurts. I was bleeding so I put Butter back in her stall and went in the house to wash my face and weep. We have this cupboard that hangs low over the counter and I smack into it at least once a week. Of course today was the day and man that hurts. My stars saw stars. I hate our stupid kitchen. And I especially do not like Mondays. I think we should go to sleep on Sunday night and awaken on Tuesday morning. People would be nicer. There would be no wars.

The killer told me this little two year old colt from Bay Meadows was only 15 hands. Maybe if he was in high heels. He is probably 14.2 and he arrived today with his freshly bowed tendon. We named him Wee Wee (sorry) and he will be gelded later in the week. He is very sweet and very scared. I cannot believe this horse was in race training. When you close your eyes and imagine a racehorse Wee Wee would never appear in your mind. What were they thinking? Wee Wee is tiny so he only cost $410.00 to save from slaughter. Money well spent.

Have a great Tuesday. Stay away from those hornets.

    Joe

    Hi Shelley,

Thanks for the information on Wendy's photos.

California is fine, the driving here is the best anywhere, too many cars, but the drivers are courteous for the majority of the time. Today it appeared that we had some smog. During the day, I am warm and at night I freeze.

Spending alot of time with my parents. My son is finally getting some days off from work. He stayed home and watched movies with me. Trying to catch up because he is always busy.

California time is hard to get used to, always has been, I prefer UAE time, I feel like I am behind in time.

By the way, where in CA are you? I had thought of going to see Showing Up in Hollywood Park this Sunday, it will be my son's birthday (26th).

Posted by: Socorro at November 22, 2006 7:19 AM

    Hi, Socorro -

I'm up in Oakland, just on the east side of San Francisco Bay above Golden Gate Fields where Lost in the Fog lived. The weather here is a little cooler than down where you are, especially in the summer when the fog comes in through the Gate and up into the hills where we live. Right now it is in the 60's usually during the day, and down into the 50's at night. Compared to UAE weather, even LA probably feels cool!

I always found traveling west to cause much worse jet lag than traveling east. Have you recovered or did you make liberal use of melatonin or other novel substances to help you through it?

What a GREAT idea to go to Hollywood Park on Sunday, to celebrate your son's birthday, watch Showing Up, Brother Derek, and the others race, and THEN report to us all! How cool could that be? That's also where you can see the other horses race on the new Polytrack surface... Wish I were down there so I could go with you...

Here's an article about the Hollywood Derby in which Showing Up is racing -

    http://www.ntra.com/content.aspx?type=news&id=21951

(I have Jo's email about blue links... next time!)

Glad to have you here - but I better get to bed. That terrible cold crud going around got me last week, and if I don't stick to my p's and q's and get to bed on time they all say it will come back with a vengence... it's a tough one this year.

Oh, my gosh!! Does Barbaro's baby bro look like him, or what? He even has an abstract heart for a star, just like our Bobby! He is adorable! If he can run as well as he is handsome, he'll be quite the little winner! Thanks, Alex, for the video - too cute!

Good evening, Bobby. I definately don't think he's any cuter than you; just don't want you to feel left out, but he is your brother. I'm sure you are proud of him already!

I loved the article about Mike Rea and Bobby! It is wonderful! I hope everyone signs the petition for Mike. What an inspiration he is!

Bobby, I hope you're sound asleep, dreaming sweet dreams. It is really late, so I'll do the same. I love you, precious One, always!

Posted by: Judy B at November 22, 2006 7:42 AM

One more item for those able to watch racing tomorrow, Wednesday - either live or on video, from Bay Meadows...

Harry Aleo has two fillies racing in the 3rd race, his QUITE A RUSH who won her maiden going away, and ON DUTY, in her first race.

QUITE A RUSH reminded lots of people watching her of her late stablemate, LOST IN THE FOG, so she has a lot of sentiment riding with her.

Russell Baze will be riding Quite a Rush, as well as five others tomorrow, so he will be even closer to Lafitte Pincay's record (by less than 12) if he has any wins tomorrow.

    Miss you, Fog...

Nancy J. Have a safe journey and enjoy your visits with your sisters. Barbaro is international. I'm sure you will hear about how he is doing.

    ####
Susan E. and Felix, enjoy every moment you have together. My good friend's cat, Magic, had a cancerous tumor on her face under her eye. She opted to not go with surgery. The tumor grew, but Magic had a year and a half that the vet never thought possible. There are never guarantees. I am sure you will never take one moment with Felix for granted. That is a very good thing.

Dearest Barbaro, sleep soundly and peacefully. Get all the rest you can to strengthen your leg and grow your hoof. Baskets of treats and grooming and a bit of grazing will be ahead of you today and visits from people who love you so much. You are the champion heart, Barbaro. Butterfly kisses from Bella, Gracie and me.

Safe traveling to all FOBs heading out for Thanksgiving.

Hope you feel better. Now I am excited about wanting to go to Hollywood Park, just hope that is what my son is willing to do.

I remember we went to San Francisco thinking it would be as warm as it was here in So. CA and worn shorts and no sweaters in August one year. My mother bought all five of us matching sweatshirts saying "SAN FRANCISCO" and looked as if we were part of a TOUR.

    Hope you start feeling better.

    Socorro,

(I had a beautiful tortoiseshell cat named Socorro, so never mind that I think of you in those interesting colors, as well as the color of sand and wind {better than Mistral})

With regard to your San Francisco trip, we who live here still chuckle at the "tourists" in the summertime, freezing on the street corners waiting for the cable car, a horribly cold ride downhill to Fisherman's Wharf with the wind whipping that fog tinged air through those open sides... my husband loved the summertime sailing here, though, and designed boats specifically to meet those hearty summer breezes which were everywhere known as San Francisco Bay boats, stiffer than the usual summer sailing boats.

You remember what Mark Twain said, that the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco...

Los Angeles was having a heat wave when we left for San Francisco, but after that trip we learned never to go anywhere without coats. I know why you and your husband would laugh, sweatshirts and shorts, just didn't go together.

Sounds as if you had many good memories. WOW! Your husband built sailboats, what more could you ask for?

Meant to ask you, how did you come up with the name Socorro for your tortoiseshell cat?
