Barbaro Updates: 139

updates are now here.

Update 1077: Another comfortable day for Barbaro today. I know, I saw! My first visit thanks to Mrs. Jackson. I spent more than an hour with Barbaro, talking with Mr. and Mrs. Jackson. I will post more tomorrow about the visit, but most importantly he (Barbaro) does look great. His coat is shiny, he has a clean eye and great weight.

Update 1076: WGAL Channel 8 did a follow up piece last night on horse slaughter: Follow Up: Horse Slaughter (usual warnings apply, but well worth seeing). It includes a great profile on Lost and Found Horse Rescue to which many of you contributed for my birthday last week. I am also in it very briefly. Thanks again to Lor in PA for helping get this coverage and to Susan Shapiro for making it happen. Keep calling.

Update 1075: Sue McMullen just sent this e-mail regarding European runners at Hollywood Park this weekend:

Friday's Citation includes Rob Roy, formerly with Sir Michael Stoute, who is now in training with Neil Dysdale in the hope he will have better luck in the US. Rob Roy missed the kick in the BC Mile but finished very strongly and should have gone closer. Also in the Citation line-up is Godolphin's Ashkal Way, plus some former English-trained horses, Three Valleys, Rebel Rebel and Bravo Maestro.

The Hollywood Derby includes the improving Dark Islander, son of Singspiel who got better with age and scored his greatest victories, including a Japan Cup, as an 'older' horse. Trained by John Hills, who saddles Clinet for the Matriarch Stakes, Dark Islander won the Grade Two Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita and it will be interesting to see if he can step up again and run well in this field.

Ivan Denisovich, who missed the cut in the BC Mile, also runs in the Derby and Ballydoyle will be hoping for a big run from him to pay for all the air fares as he travelled home after his abortive attempt at the BC, then went back to the US to run in California. This will be another encounter with Showing Up who has already beaten him, in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington.

As noted Neil Drysdale now trains Rob Roy. Neil is one of the leading trainers in the US (trained Fusaichi Pegasus etc.), an englishman and also a new father! Neil once had a string of horses at Fair Hill. I freelanced for him a little. His assistant trainer, John "the quiet man", who ran the shed at Fair Hill and is still with Neil, also worked for Mercy Rimell, just before I joined Mercy's stable for my first job in racing.

I saw Michael Matz in the local sandwich shop (Prizzios). He is planning to see Barbaro this afternoon and take him outside. He will be at Fair Hill in the morning before heading out to Kentucky to saddle Sangrita tomorrow afternoon.

Keep calling.

Update 1074: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night) and chilly morning this morning at Fair Hill. I saw Michael Matz coming on to the track for my second set. Michael also noted Barbaro is now weighing in at 1,135 pounds. As I suspected it was a pretty busy morning, and it also looks like the guys working on the Tapeta surface (the track inside the main dirt track) are moving right along too. About 2/3rds of the track now has the new surface laid on top of whatever else they needed to put down. I am wondering if they will finish it before the rain comes!
updated 10:30 am, wednesday, november 22

Update 1073: I am guessing Michael Matz will be heading back to Churchill Downs this week: Prep win good sign for Sangrita. If Sangrita can win this grade two stake for Michael's wife, D.D., then Michael will have had a great year at Churchill Downs. Actually I guess he already has had a great year there, but this would be icing on the cake.

Del Mar has gone with the Polytrack. It will be installed in time for their summer meet, which like Hollywood Park, is ahead of their mandated schedule (end of year, 2007). A short excerpt:

"Polytrack is going to make our racing surface a safer place for our horses and riders," said Joe Harper, Del Mar's president and general manager, in a statement. Work is expected to begin on the one-mile main track in January, pending final approval.

The Barbaro update will likely again be after training hours this morning. It is likely to be busy this morning in anticipation of some very wet weather coming through later today and tomorrow. Lets hope we do not get all the rain they expect so racing can stay on the turf this weekend (Red Aspen).

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans!

(Morning to all you "left coasters" still up!)

I'm watching the replay of Wire-to-Wire as I type and they're reviewing the Breeder's Cup - still waiting for the mention of Dr. R. and any news on the Big Bay One.

I'm off work until Monday so will be vigilant in calling and emailing those senators. They need to hear from those of us in the hinterlands.

Will check back later for the ACN report.

Sam

You asked the question about where I saw that Mrs. Jackson said when Barbaro is better they are considering to sending him to the Kentucky Horse Park - Because it is Americas horse and the public would be able to see him. It was in an article on this site and also mentioned in the Discussion Board and Chat. She said Barbaro would not be going to their farm near NBC because of security - He is such a wonderful horse - I would want to keep him close to me no matter what the security would cost - and the people could see if they keep him out grazing - even if they have to purchase more property for him - He is well worth it.

Good Wednesday morning Alex, Bobby and fellow FsOB

Everyone excited about tomorrow??? I wonder what Bobby gets for thanksgiving dinner. Just being silly here - of course he'll get his usual favorites!

Still making calls to Senators - I called this morning even though they are not in the office - I leave voice mail messages. I guess the staff won't be back until Monday. I will leave messages every day until the voice mail gets full or they return, whichever happens first.

Have a great day all! I'll check back for the update.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! We have A LOT to be thankful for.

Barbaro, you are loved very much. I thank God for your continued recovery. I hope you get out today - Alex reports rainy weather on the way.

Barbaro's baby brother is beautiful and he looks excellent. He has very big horseshoes to fill, but maybe the Jacksons have another great champ on the way..

Alex, your articles are interesting and enjoyable. Thank you for everything.

Good Morning to all!!!

And good morning to the sweetest boy on earth.
(Besides Zeke, of course)

Barbaro, I was looking at photos of you pre-injury, and post injury last nite. You have maintained such stature and grace in spite of your injuries. You are amazing in both body and spirit. No one could ever match your beauty. You are soooooo handsome. Like candy for the eyes.

We are all so proud of you.

Hope you get out today, and have some special time with those you love.

Greatful day to all. We are so blessed, and what a wonderful Thanksgiving we all will have....we have so much to be thankful for.

Good morning Barbaro and the Wonderful Fans of Barbaro.

Mr. Barbaro, we are hoping you had a wonderful night and have rays of sunshine inside and outside for you today.

I noticed Sen. Frist may announce run for Presidency...maybe this may be a catch line for us...to get bill passed.

Please, continue doing all you can do to get the bill passed...We are doing this for Mrs. Jackson, heart of gold, Barbaro, winner in spirit and on the track, and all of the other horses...sisters and brothers..that have suffered or needs a loving home.

Everyone have a good day...as on Rawhide, moving, moving, let's get those (instead of cattle) calls a moving...ha.

Shelly inCA thanks for the heads up on Quite a Rush, I hope I can watch her today. I'm off but my cousin is in the hospital so I'll have to go check on him today.

Susan E, Prayers for you and Felix
I just read about Denise being ill, I light candles and send prayers.

Debbie L.A. Girl, do you every sleep? Your on here late and early. You must have an unlimited energy supply, glad your working on our side for antislaughter.

Did ya'll post those bourbon balls on the Barbaro cookbook thread?

I just read ,from the end of the 138 post, someone had reposted a Monday from TB Joes site, it was hilarious! I really enjoy his diary, whomever introduced us to his site, Thanks.

Good morning from the Left Coast...I am assuming the time that appears on the posts is GMT because from the looks of the times, "we never sleep."

;o)

This is indeed going to be a Thanksgiving where we have so much to be thankful for, from the start of FOB, for ALL the FOBs, for Alex, for this site, for NBC and their wonderful staff, and for the candles we light and the kinship we share for the horses who are no longer here.

I have shed many tears this year--joyful one as well as those in sorrow--as have we all.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Posted by: KAY at November 22, 2006 1:45 PM

Barbaro, honey, here's a big hug((())). I'm so excited that people are actually talking about where you're going to go when you are "out of the woods", (as Dr. R. says).

Happy Thanksgving to everyone, and from me, one heartfelt sigh of thanks that Barbaro is doing so well.

Posted by: Anita MA at November 22, 2006 1:47 PM

A Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! Can't help thinking about the security issue for Barbaro at the Jackson's farm. We can't see the perimeters and parameters of the place unless we have been there, which I have not, but I have read it is 179 acres. How could this be secured with less than a small army? Maybe surround the whole with "electronic fencing" such as is used for dogs? Would that deter people? The Jacksons would still have to live with hoardes of people, hundreds and hundreds, descending on their space all the time, unless there be one gate at the end of a long, long trail...Maybe it's not actually impossible, but still one does not know enough to be able to see what the Jacksons see!
Meanwhile, I am calling the Senators and will not give up, and urge everyone to do the same. LOL, Mary E

Good Morning Barbaro, sweet Barbaro, and all FOB's:
Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all: FOB's, Alex and all of TWR, the Jackson's, Dr. R. and the entire staff at NBC, the wonderful folks at KF, Edgar Prado, Bobby's Baby Brother, and all else who visit this site, and all those who have the love for Barbaro that encompasses so many many people. May all your blessings continue throughout the entire holiday season. Prayers and special thoughts to all those in need.

BELIEVE IN MIRACLES
BELIEVE IN BARBARO
I DO!!!

P.S. Barbaro, when the day comes that you are healed, and if I ever got the honor to see you in person, I don't know that I would be able to handle the magnificence that is you. I would probably be crying so much that I'd have a hard time seeing you through the tears. But I still look forward to that day, sweet Prince. Happy Turkey Day!

The girl is Sessions DC office still sounds like she needs some serious sleep. No interest in what she is doing at all.

I had to leave a message at Shelby's DC office.

For the locals, I used the offices in the Capital. Session I had to leave a message, Shelby's is already full.

Think I'll try a different local for Shelby.

Good morning, all!

Catching up on responses to the last day or so (I seem always to be out of sync with posting and reading, forgive me...)

##### Robyn

For 10 years I've been freelancing for an educational curriculum company as a project mgr/editor. A few changes of ownership and lousy management have kept things rocking, not in a good way. I just landed a big project for next year that will keep me going for 5 months, but let's say, when I go into a clothing store now, it's like, what is this place for? Weird. You get so used to cutting back on everything, you no longer give yourself "permission" to buy anything.

Bourbon balls! Ah, when I lived in Kentucky, I used to smuggle Rebecca Ruth's bourbon, mint and rum chocolate balls back home to Conn. (back then, they couldn't ship them interstate). The company is still in operation, and I ordered some for myself a few years ago. Brought back yummy rummy memories ;)

##### Bonnie
Thank you for disclosing what Lael means! I've been wondering that for months. Loyalty (in Gaelic) is absolutely the perfect description of these wonderful folks.

##### Dora
Robyn's advice sounds good. Hang in there, you have a golden heart for people and animals. The big project I mention came a few hours after I had pleaded earnestly with God, saying, I really, REALLY need some income--it was amazing and completely out of the blue. And yes, I pray every day for S.1915 and for Barbaro to recover fully.

#### Susan E.
I'm so sorry for Felix. Don't give up yet. Our prayers surround you both.

#### Lynda P.
Wire to Wire airs here in Conn. at 2pm EDT on Tuesdays, and again Wed. mornings at 5:30am. Dr. R must have gotten to me, I had two separate dreams about him last night. And no, I'm not telling!

Zoning issues--my town requires 5 acres for horses. Sure, it's now suburban sprawl but it was rural when my mom and I moved here in '57. When my letter about slaughter was published in the local paper, I got a call from a local horse owner asking me to sign her petition to try to get the zoning req changed. I said sure, but never heard from her again.

Praying for ACN and a wonderful, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Safe travels to those in transit, horses running, people flying, family reunions, etc. Remember, hold your furkids close and kiss your favorite relatives earnestly. And for those you're stuck with, fake it ;)

I'm going to start my calls today with, "I want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and ask the senator to...blah blah blah..."

Might as well spoon on the gravy thick!

We pray for an end to the vicious slaughter of our beautiful horses. Thank you Jackson's, Dr. Dean, Alex, and all who contribute to the well being of our boy! Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

The Kentucky Horse Park is a wonderful place. The workers will get the horses out of the stalls, so you can take pictures.
Tell you all about that horse. And the money helps with TB rescues, I think. Anyone know how many horses are there?

Well, I had to leave a message at Shelby's Birmingham office too, but at least it's another call that gets recorded.

Here is the best recipe I've found for cooking the big bird:

Go buy a turkey.

Take a drink of whiskey (scotch).

Put turkey in the oven.

Take another 2 drinks of whiskey.

Set the degree at 375 ovens.

Take 3 more whiskeys of drink.

Turn oven the on.

Take 4 whisks of drinky.

Turk the bastey.

Whiskey another bottle of get.

Stick a turkey in the thermometer.

Glass yourself a pour of whiskey.

Bake the whiskey for 4 hours.

Take the oven out of the turkey.

Floor the turkey up off of the pick.

Turk the carvey.

Get yourself another scottle of botch.

Tet the sable and pour yourself a glass of turkey.

Bless the saying, pass and eat out.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE !!

Got to run, but just wanted to encourage everyone to flood the Senator's Voice Mail today (unless, of course, you can catch some poor aide still working). I really believe we can do this.

How goes it, Bobby? Since the cast has come off, I feel a "need" for more in-depth news. And, a few pics! But I have to remember that no news is good news, right Alex!?!

Good morning FOBs! I am sitting here surrounded by work on my desk but had to stop a moment to check in.

Jo - I like the turkey recipe. I'll be sure to follow it tomorrow.

To everyone - have a wonderful holiday and keep calling those senators! The horses don't get a break, so neither do we!

Hi Alex & All...

For all of you wondering about Sabina, she was at Ryerss with her Mother on Saturday. She is wearing a brace, but looks great! She's just amazing!

Sabina groomed her Toby, who has been missing her very much, and then took her out to exercise her a lunge line. There is no doubt in my mind that she will be riding again soon.

Sabina & her Mother are so appreciative of all the cards and flowers from FOBs. Her Mother said that all the good wishes were like a "great big hug" for Sabina and helped her recover. You FOBs are the best!!!!!!

Below is a link to my Webshot albums and there are new pictures of Sabina and Toby taken on Saturday in the top album.

I hope Alex, and all of you, have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving. We truly have a lot to be thankful for this year.... Barbaro & Sabina to mention two.

Jan; Hahaha I havent had any dreams of Dr R, but I had one of MM. Usually Wire to Wire is at one my time (CST) but for some reason, mabe it was on way earlier here because it didn't come on at 1pm.

Can't wait for Sangrita to race tomorrow! That's going to be a really good race. I just know she is going to win.

Good Morning Most Magnificant Champ in all the world! I'm sure everyone at Fair Hills and the Bolton Center are bracing themselves for the Nor'Easter. Hope you are able to get your walk and outdoor adventure before it hits us. Think of you always Big Guy and have your picture on my refrigerator and since (SAD TO SAY) I open it more aften than I should, I see many times each day there and in my minds eye. Continue to get well and to know how much loving and healing energy are sent your way each day. Many hugs and Kisses on your beautiful nose. Love you Big Guy.

One more item for those able to watch racing today, Wednesday - either live or on video, from Bay Meadows...

Harry Aleo and his trainer, Greg Gilchrist, has two fillies racing in the 3rd race, his QUITE A RUSH who won her maiden going away, and ON DUTY, in her first race.

QUITE A RUSH reminded lots of people watching her of her late and greatly missed stablemate, LOST IN THE FOG, so she has a lot of sentiment riding with her.

Russell Baze will be riding Quite a Rush, as well as five others tomorrow, so he will be even closer to Lafitte Pincay's record (by less than 12) if he has any wins today.

Shine on, Fog...

Good morning, Starshine! I hope you had ACN--the day does not officially begin till the magic words are posted.

Jo, love the turkey recipe!

Jeanette, thanks for the update on Sabina. She is doing so much better than I expected--great to hear!

Felix and Lizzie send hugs to the Dude cats and Lola and Nala and Opie. Get well and stay well.

Felix had a rough night and is having a rough morning. It is clear his leg is giving him a lot of pain. Couldn't give him pain meds yesterday because of all the anethesia, but gave him some about a half hour ago and hope they work. Now that all the fur mats have been removed, I can see once again how terribly thin he is, especially behind the rib cage. He is still eating well. The second opinion concurred with the first. Watching him struggle on three legs and seeing how thin he is makes me realize the vet is right about not amputating. I don't think Felix could withstand the surgery and recovery at this point.

So, today is my first official day of unemployment and I am free to be home and take care of my baby. Things happen for a reason. I am going to buy some meat and cook it for him for Thanksgiving--it will be the first meat in this house since I went veggie on Labor Day weekend. Perhaps a little Cornish hen--he loves Cornish hen.

More later, ya'll. You are the best.

Susan E., my prayers are with you and Felix and Lizzie. Snuggle with Felix today and talk with him. XXXOOO

Susan E

A trick that used to keep mine eating for a while:

Mix together cooked ground turkey and cooked white rice. You can moisten it with a little chicken broth. You can even put it in the blender to get it to the consistency of baby food. Mine would take this for a while after they quit taking baby food for me.

Also, I have found that liverwurst/braunschweiger works really well. I always have to get the commercially made stuff for them because my home-made has onions in it, which are NOT good for cats.

SUSANE: Poor Felix, I hope the pain meds work. He will love the meat! Have a great day with him. With you home all day it will make him feel better.

Good morning, Handsome. I just saw a video of your baby brother. He's a little imp, I think. And he looks a lot like you.

You should be getting your basket of goodies soon - enough to last you through tomorrow because Alli said she was closing shop for the holiday.

I hope you enjoy your treats, Champ, as much as I enjoy thinking about your eating them.

Stay well, be safe.
I believe in you, Barbaro.

Remember to take time to call/fax/e-mail. Time is running out.

Take care all and make it a comfortable day.

MESSAGE FROM DEBRA WI AND SHELLEYA

We had a long discussion last night regarding some of yesterday’s events and needed to ask for your help. It has taken us time to build relationships and establish trust with our contacts in DC. When everyone starts to interrogate aides, it undermines that trust and could possibly lead to us loosing our sources.

It is very important that everyone keep calling to express outrage about horse slaughter and ask for support for S1915. However, the calls should be short and polite. As many of you found out yesterday, you will only get different messages from each office and it will only confuse the issue.

If we look like we are not politically savvy, we will not be taken seriously. This has become VERY political now and we’ve been told that we will NOT actually be seeing what is happening behind the scenes.

It is true that the local offices are more interested in hearing from their constituents. That has been made clear by many of the calls from yesterday. We need to get more people involved from the states that are on our list….Nevada, Tennessee, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi.

We would suggest that, over the holiday weekend, you leave voice mail messages, send faxes and e-mails to the DC offices of your own senators and the ones mentioned in our post

Contact these Senators to ask for action on The American Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act in any vehicle before adjournment.

Bill Frist
Mitch McConnell
Trent Lott
Harry Reid

Also encourage and thank our two sponsors for their determination to
get the bill passed -
Mary Landrieu
John Ensign

It is extremely doubtful that there is time for this bill to stand of it’s own. It will all be a matter of strategy and where to place it. Our supporters in DC ARE working on this and are trying to come up with the vehicle that will give us the best chance. That’s politics….it’s how our system works!!

We would both like to thank everyone for their commitment and urge you all to keep on fighting. Remember, no one thought it had a chance in the House and it passed with an overwhelming majority!!

Posted by: ShelleyA at November 22, 2006 3:58 PM

God Bless Joe and all the Joe's and Jill's like him...for the love they give the horses, the ones in need, the ones who need tlc, the ones whose life has been spared.

LET US GET THIS BILL PASSED...Then we can move on and find homes for these loved ones...

Posted by: JOAN ROYA at November 22, 2006 3:59 PM

THANK YOU....SHELLEY A & FOB'S

Thank you Shelley for posting our message this morning and for chatting with me in length last night.

I just want to add that in building those key relationships in DC which is helping us all, most of the time Shelley and I were able to get important up-to-the-minute information that the general public was not getting until Approx. a week later. That being said, we were able to jump on the the new strategy which was giving us approximatley 7 additional campaign days vs what we had/have left. I hope this makes sense everyone.

I finally just wanted to say that I?m so proud to know all of you wonderful people and also very proud to be a part of
HIS STORY....(BARBARO)...HISTORY:-)...with you all.

God Bless

HAPPY Thanksgiving to the Big Bay Boy Barbaro !

Alex et al -- sincere thanks for all of your care, your precious time and the extreme effort you put into keeping us all updated on this journey that unites us all in love and care for Barbaro, more humane policies, and general equine appreciation and care. It makes us all better people.

It is wonderful to see and be a part of a positive unified feeling, a movement spurred on by beautiful and strong Barbaro.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Dean, Gretchen and Roy, Alex and everyone at NBC -- and all of the people whose comments I read regularly here and everwhere else who show compassion, hope and belief. That is a powerful thing -- as powerful as the innocence and strength of the boy who is fighting for his life resolutely, elegantly and with powerful willful spirit.

May we all possess at least a bit of that in each of our coming days.

Happy Thanksgiving to us all. Keep up the fight !

Let us not forget the accident horses. Here are the latest updates on the horses.

Willie's update (11/20/06)
Willie is such a good horse. He is easy to catch now and looks forward to his daily walks. His weight and over all health are improving. He has been de-wormed and started on a vaccination program.. He picked up all 4 feet for the farrier to trim. We have had to stop giving him treats from our hands as he is starting to bite, looking for them.

Sue's Update (11/20/06)
She has been so good about having her bandages changed. We also have found out that she is not pregnant. Yahoo! She let the Farrier check her hooves, but did not need any trimmed off. Goes out with Mortie for exercise.

Mortie's Update (11/20/06)
He has not been the best about having his bandages changed. Although the vet said that he had been good about it at their place. He has started kicking the wall (hard) several times before giving in. He has also developed a snotty nose and had to be started on medications. He was the horse featured (changing his bandages) in the St. Louis Post article. View the slide show on the St. Louis Post website where Amanda, Ranch Manager, did an awesome job. So he is a star! Goes out with Sue for exercise

Stan's Update (11/20/06)
Stan went to the veterinarian chiropractor for an evaluation and adjustment. Found his left pelvis, both lumbar vertebrae and his withers out of alignment. He got adjusted and now has exercises to do. Then he got his teeth floated. He had hooks on the front of his upper molars and on the back of his lower molars. He continues to put on weight and is looking good. Goes out with CC for exercise.

Hocks' Update (11/20/06)
The wounds on the inside of his hocks are really healing well. The puncture wound on his right hind has also healed up. He appears sound in both back legs - amazing considering the wounds he had after the accident. He is also becoming easier to catch. He loves his daily walks and is very sensible about things he sees. If he would let us catch him, he could go out into a bigger pen. Maybe he just likes the personal attention.

Bazonka Donk's Update (11/20/06)
He has come back from the veterinary hospital. They used the laser to de-bride the wound on his right rear and it went very well. Even though his wound is still large, it is amazing how well it has healed and that it did not get infected. We changed his wrap and that went well (with a little tranqualizer and feeding him stud muffin treats). His tail is his worst weapon and he knows when to swish it right into your face! Ha!

Mama's Update (11/20/06)
Mama is such a sweet horse. She is so good about her bandage changes and her wounds are healing well. Veterinarian found that her teeth had recently been filed and were fine. We will be keeping her here at Longmeadow until the foal is born so we can handle any complications that might come up. Goes out with Gidget for exercise.

DD's update (11/20/06)
DD continues to be a sweet girl. Had a visitor come to the Ranch that helped at the triage area after the accident and she said that DD was one of the horses that was laying down a lot. She was glad to see her doing so well. Veterinarian floated her teeth and pregnancy checked her. She is not pregnant. Yahoo!!!!! Goes out with Darla for exercise

Princess' Update (11/20/06)
She continues to have her ups and downs. She has been difficult to work with on treating her wounds. Friday she was cooperative and we were happy (although she was more princess-like this was unlike her usual attitude). On Saturday (11/4/06) she was not feeling well. She went to the veterinary hospital and she had a small colon impaction. Was given fluids and it passed early Saturday morning. She had her teeth floated and is missing an upper molar. X-rays of her right hind leg showed no problems with bones, just a soft tissue injury that has some lymphatic issues. She will always have the enlarged fetlock/pastern area. She is sound on it and if she is trained for riding she may be limited on what she can do. She has come home and goes out for exercise with Frankie.

Dudley DoRight's Update (11/20/06)
He is full of energy and very demanding about what he wants although he behaves. He was not good for the farrier and tried to kick him when he picked up a front foot. Although he will let us pick up all four hooves. Will work with him a little more and try again. Checked his teeth and they had been done recently. We think he may be a standardbred instead of a thoroughbred. He is still an awesome guy.

Frankie's Update (11/20/06)
She is getting better about the leg wound cleaning and living near the potbellied pigs (six are in her barn). She is actually very interested in them and wants to sniff them, which the pigs do not like. She started limping on her right fore and we suspected an abscess. The farrier found an abscess in her bar. So now we are putting a soak boot on her and she is surprisingly well behaved for it all. She had her teeth floated and they really had some points on them. She also was pregnancy checked and is not pregnant. Yahoo!!! She was going out with Princess for exercise, but has to stay in until her abscess is healed.

CC's update (11/20/06)
CC got a visit from one of his sponsors from Dallas, Texas. He was taken out of his stall and behaved very well for all the petting. He has become friendlier and pins those ears less often now.

Sweetie's update (11/20/06)
The infection in the wound on her left foreleg finally responded to antibiotics. She was able to come home to the Ranch on November 9th. She is very easy going except for when we doctor the leg wounds. We will be getting to know her now. She will be going out with Mortie and Sue for exercise.

Spanky's update (11/20/06)
The farrier trimmed his hooves and he was very good. He did not act like the ringbone and arthritic knees were a problem. He also went to the veterinarian chiropractor and she adjusted his right pelvis. He has good range of motion in all his leg joints. He has exercises to do and is very good about letting us do them.

Buckwheat's update (11/20/06)
Buckwheat continues to do very well on his right rear. It appears that he has an old injury to his left front leg and shoulder. So he walks very strangely each leg goes a different direction. It will be interesting to see what the veterinarian chiropractor finds on him..

Darla's update (11/20/06)
Her blood work came back normal. So we can safely say she is over her pneumonia and its complications and is healthy again. She stood for the farrier and was very good. The veterinarian floated her teeth and pregnancy checked her. She is not pregnant. Yahoo!!! She is very well behaved and lets us doctor wounds without anyone holding her. She goes out with DD for exercise.

Crashina's update (11/20/06)
A veterinarian pregnancy checked her and she is not pregnant. Yahoo! The veterinarian chiropractor checked her adjustment and found her in good shape. She is very level headed for being just four years old. But we have found that if you leave a brush or halter laying, around she will pick it up in her mouth and carry it off.

Liberty's update (11/20/06)
A veterinarian pregnancy checked her and she is not pregnant. Yahoo! She was fair for the farrier to trim her front hooves, but doesn’t like her back legs messed with. (Finally found something that upsets her!) She is low in the pecking order and just moves out of the way for the other mares

Clueless Too's update (11/20/06)
He now has a stall in the Learning Center. So he spends his night in the stall and his days in the indoor arena with Crashina, Liberty and Karma. He is doing well and is eager to go to his stall. Of course, he is getting a supplement in addition to his hay and he doesn’t have to put up with the mare’s moodiness. He is still a pest!

Spirit's update (11/20/06)
A veterinarian pregnancy checked and she is not pregnant. Yahoo!!!! She is not very easy to catch and is very wary of the treats being fed and the hand attached to them. She was difficult to give vaccinations to. She doesn’t like to be touched behind her withers or on the legs, so we have some work to do with her. Moved her to a stall in Safe Stay barn so we can do more one on one work with her. She is already a little easier to catch to go out for exercise and to come in for lunch.

Karma's update (11/20/06)
A veterinarian pregnancy checked and she is not pregnant. Yahoo! She was pictured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and on Channel 4 TV with Donna Saverese. Was very well behaved. She doesn’t like her legs and feet touched, but if you stay with it she does know how to pick them up. She can kick pretty good with her hind feet. The farrier got her to pick up all four, but she really didn’t need anything trimmed off.

Freedom's update (11/20/06)
Freedom continues to do well. He went to the veterinarian for a chiropractic adjustment and did not need anything. The farrier trimmed his feet. He stood just fine for both of them. Very well behaved

Jackpot's update (11/20/06)
We have had several people contact us and mention that they thought he looks like a Morgan (horse breed). We had though that, too, as he was very even over his top line. So we are changing his breed from Quarter horse type to Morgan Cross. He is still hard to catch, but a gentleman to work with, except he doesn’t like his back feet touched. The farrier was able to trim the front hooves

Gidget's update (11/20/06)
Gidget is such a good mare that you don’t even know she is there. She had her teeth checked and had several molars missing or very short. She goes out for exercise with Mama.

Lets all remember them this holiday season.

Good morning Sweet Bobby, Alex, and family,

ACN - a great way to start the day!

I am thrilled that Del Mar is installing Polytrack!! Alex, thanks so much for sharing that info. with us! As soon as I read about it, I quickly sent an email to Mr. Harper thanking him for the decision to install the track. I was so excited to know that something is being done there to help our horses and jockeys safe! I hope Churchill Downs will follow suit.

Let's all try to get in some more calling and faxing today before Thanksgiving!

I want to wish each and every one of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. We all share in our love for Barbaro, we are united here because of him, because of our beloved Alex. For this, for all of you, I am truly thankful.

## Everyone have a blessed Thanksgiving, thankful for Barbaro, his dad and mom, Dr. R, Edgar and all the wonderful animal people that have come together here.

Leaving many voice mails and faxes still work. We must stay positive and get S1915 passed. I will be handing out many flyers on Friday.

Sorry for Susan and Felix, he knows he is loved.

A jockey at Calder was suspended only 15 days for causing a 5 horse accident on Sunday where 5 horses went down, including Shug McGaugheys' 2 year old maiden. One of the horses, Chester's Image had to be euthanized. The jockey that was suspended cut off Chester's Image who clipped heels. Prayers for poor Chester and all horses involved.

Good Morning to all!

RE: WGAL TV 8 (Lancaster, PA), SUSAN SHAPIRO, did a FOLLOW-UP REPORT to the earlier investigative report she did on the HORSE SLAUGHTER ISSUE.
WGAL TV 8 aired the update last night (Tuesday, 11/21/06) on the 11:00 PM NEWS BROADCAST. Susan Shapiro did an EXCELLENT JOB!
There were shots of FAIR HILL TRACK, OUR #1 ALEX, also the horrible New Holland, PA auction and actually pointed out one of the killer buyers (how can that man even sleep), and then she interviewed KELLY YOUNG from LOST & FOUND HORSE RESCUE, JACOBUS, PA, and showed some of the rescue horses there!! Interviewed a young lady who adopted a rescue from LOST & FOUND. Some great footage from Susan's visit to LOST & FOUND! LOST & FOUND is a very special place!
(Jacobus, PA, is just a few miles south of York, PA, easily accessible from I-83.)
There was also undercover footage shown from the SH's and they warned it would be graphic. I am not able to look at that so did have to close my eyes to those parts.

If I remember correctly it was LOR from this site who made the contact with Susan Shapiro at WGAL TV 8, so hoping LOR saw the follow-up, too.
(Hi Lor!)

I alerted Alex and he asked me to post here so you all could see.

From past experience, WGAL TV 8 has always done a really good job, and so HATS OFF TO SUSAN SHAPIRO for the excellent report.

WGAL TV 8, Lancaster, PA, broadcasts to the Susquehanna Valley, but we have COMCAST and for us it's Channel 3.
I've not had a chance to get to their website yet but hopefully maybe there will be a clip or something.

Respectfully reported for ALEX and ALL OUR EQUINE FRIENDS.
and, of course,
WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES! WE BELIEVE IN BARBARO!

Hi All,

Yesterday when making my calls to senators I stated that if the bill was not passed this year we (FOBs) would be calling every day until it does, for the rest of our lives if need be.

The silence on the other end of the line said it all - I envisoned them thinking about fielding calls from us forever. Maybe that will get them to take this seriously.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL and your families. My pies are in the oven and the bird is safely in the fridge. Everyone have a good time and a very safe trip to and from.

Barbaro, sweetie, your keep healing and we will keep praying. God bless you and all of your caretakers, Alex, Tom, Peter, Kennett Florist and all who need help or are hurting in any way.

We have much to be thankful for.

Posted by: Deborah A./ Colorado at November 22, 2006 5:15 PM

Another comfortable night - one after another after another after another - ad infinitum. May the progressive miracle continue. And thanks to Tim and Alex and all of Barbaro's incredible connections for allowing us all to witness it day by day.

After making the suggested calls (my own two from Indiana, Frist, McConnell, Lott & Reid, and last but not least Landrieu and Ensign - all of them both in DC and local offices) and getting SPECIFIC ADVICE from Ensign's DC aide - I prepared and sent the following email to all my Indiana contacts. Respectfully suggest a similar email may be in order from each of us to our contacts in own own respective state; provide the easy phone number contacts in the email. Here's the Indiana version:

(subject line)
Calling Indiana Senators re Horse Slaughter Ban Bill (S 1915)

Time is running out. An aide to Senator John Ensign, originator of the horse slaughter ban bill, advises that the most effective strategy NOW is to have as many people as possible CALL the U.S. Senators from their own states. We want S 1915 to PASS (without amendments) before the end of the year.

Here are their phone numbers:

Sen. Evan Bayh (co-sponsor of S 1915)
DC phone - 202-224-5623
local phones:
Indianapolis - 317-554-0750
Evansville - 812-465-6500
Fort Wayne - 260-426-3151
Hammond - 219-852-2763
Jeffersonville - 812-218-2317
South Bend - 574-236-8302

Sen. Richard Lugar (not a co-sponsor yet - ask him to sign on - but he did vote for comparable legislation in the past)
DC phone - 202-224-4814
local phones:
Indianapolis - 317-226-5555
Evansville - 812-465-6313
Fort Wayne - 260-422-1505
Jeffersonville - 812-288-3377
Valparaiso - 219-548-8035

Please make as many calls as you can to all their offices. Tell them you are an Indiana resident, and want to see S 1915 passed without amendments before the end of the year.

Remind them that HR 503 (House counterpart) passed overwhelmingly on Sept. 7, but the Senate version (S 1915) is stuck in a [Commerce] Committee. Every week that the Senate does not act, an additional 2,000 horses are slaughtered for foreign human consumption.

Ask your Senators to do whatever they can to get S 1915 to the Senate floor for a vote before the end of the year. If it is not passed by the end of the year, the anti-slaughter people will have to start all over.

THANK YOU for all you do for the horses.

Love - CJ [end of email I sent to Indiana contacts]

Please take heed what Sen. Ensign's DC aide told me - have people call their own senators. THANKS.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

Hope Peace Love Music & RESPECT - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

Thanks for that great report and KUDOS to Lor for making that contact.
I'm just thinking back on my conversation with Mike at Ensigns office. He's like the FOBs old friend by now. I was saying that I didn't understand how the pro-slaughter people could say that slaughter was humane, that it was brutal. That's when the waterworks began. When people see this stuff on TV it's got to ring true.

Hello everyone,

My dad passed away from leukemia two years ago, but every Thanksgiving that he was here, he recited this prayer before dinner. So in honor of my dad I will share it with all of you and wish you ALL a very happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you for your prayers for my Lola!

Oh, heavenly Father,

We thank thee for food and remember the hungry.

We thank thee for health and remember the sick.

We thank thee for friends and remember the friendless.

We thank thee for freedom and remember the enslaved.

May these remembrances stir us to service,

That thy gifts to us may be used for others. Amen.

Cora and Renee,

It makes me think perhaps Renee has led a sheltered life, to blush at a drawing of the parts of a horse, perhaps in a convent where there weren't any male animals or male humans. I admire your innocent Renee! I had two older brothers so by the time I was six I had seen it all and in my estimation it's nothing to write home about. Or maybe you're blushing at something else, the fetlock joint?!

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at November 22, 2006 6:26 PM

Dear Sweet Barbaro:

My prayers continue for your comfort, and healing.
I understand that you are now lying down more in your stall. I think this is good. Taking all the weight off your left foot, and all your feet realy. I love knowing that your owner, Mrs. Jackson comes to sit and talk with you. This is so comforting for you I know. She must be one of the kindest, and loving people in the world.

I am proud for you, and thankful for all your team that cares for and loves you.

Wishing you love, comfort, and happiness.

Poor Renee
Maybe we should all send her books, drawings, charts, so she can "see what she is missing".

Here is a message (again) from ShelleyA today-everybody please take note!

Hi all: Just wanted to let you know Walk is hanging out with Barbaro again. Dr. Richardson spent time with him and was pleased with the way he jogged. Seems my baby is now totally sound. He already had his MRI done and Dr. R said he is much improved. He is waiting for confirmation on this but the news could not be better. We had originally planned to rest him in Florida until the Spring. However, Dr. R suggested that we not turn him out in a paddock as he has been cooped up so long that he might go wild and hurt himself. Instead, we will have someone riding him. He is way ahead of schedule and should be ready to go in the late Spring to early Summer. I can't tell you how thrilled I am.

Hi Bobby: Did you get to share your carrots with your friend Walk? I hope while he was there you gave him some good pointers on how to be a champion like you. You take care big guy and keep up the good work. Your growing bigger and stronger every day. It's only a matter of time before you will be on your way back home. I believe in you and I always will. Love ya.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone. There are just so many reasons to be thankful for. Bobby is definitely at the top of the list, along with Dr. R and all the wonderful people at New Bolton and of course my baby Walk. It's been a hard six months but with all you guys to share with, it's been great.
