    Barbaro Updates: 143

    updates are now here.

Update 1106: As noticed by a few people in the comments, the New Bolton release notes only a light cotton bandage supporting Barbaro's right hind leg (makes no mention of splints). When I visited Barbaro I also noticed this. I decided not to mention it at the time, I thought I would wait for New Bolton to make this information available.

Update 1105: The New Bolton update for Barbaro: Barbaro steadily improving

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to improve following the removal of his right hind leg cast on November 6, according to his medical team. "Barbaro is steadily gaining strength on his right hind limb now that it is out of the cast," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "He is only wearing a very light cotton bandage on that leg and both walks and stands well on it." Barbaro's lower right hind leg had been in a cast since surgery at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital following his accident at the Preakness on May 20. "Radiographs of his fractured lower limb were taken yesterday and look excellent," said Dr. Richardson.

Barbaro's left hind foot, which had laminitis, continues to improve. "The left hind foot is improving gradually and has a long way to go although his comfort on that foot remains surprisingly good," said Dr. Richardson. "Barbaro's attitude and appetite remain excellent, and he still takes short walks outside to graze each day if the weather permits."

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, December 12, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 1104: For Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, would you vote for Barbaro or Dr. Richardson ? Both appear to have compelling cases. December 4 we will know.

Update 1103: It has taken a long time, and who knows, it might be temporary, but as I type this site is on the first page of search results on google for both Barbaro and barbaro.

Alie, from Kennett Florist left this upbeat comment (timestamp: 5:36 pm):

    Hello All
What a beautiful day here in Kennett Square. I just returned from NBC. They were very busy. Lots of people coming in and out. The mood was extremely up. I was greeted by happy faces & even a couple hugs. Mrs. Jackson was visiting & had her bag of grass, for the boss horse. She is just a wonderful lady. I talked to Dr Sweeney we decided where the tree is going to go, in the lobby. Have a great day.
    God Bless
    We Believe
    Alie

Update 1102: Mrs. Jackson just called. Barbaro remains comfortable. Mrs. Jackson had just visited. He was laying down as she was leaving. Of course she brought him his cut grass. There will be an update today from New Bolton.

I did see Peter early this morning before he left for Florida. He will take a couple of days off as he, Kim and Nicholas get re-situated for the "winter". It is a lovely day today again at Fair Hill (and New Bolton I assume). I don't think it could be warmer for this time of year. Seven sets, and I was wishing I had not had the long johns on later in the morning.
update 12:30 pm, tuesday, november 28

Update 1101: Sue McMullen is keeping up with Ouija Board's travels:

Ouija Board has arrived in Hong Kong safely and is reported to be in fine fettle ahead of her bid to win the Hong Kong Vase, one of the Cathay Pacific International races on December 10. She won this race last year and it will be her final appearance on a racecourse. Ouija's amazing run to claim third in the Japan Cup behind what is for many people the world's best turf horse, Deep Impact, adds yet another glittering result to her resume and when she bows out in a couple of weeks time, racing will certainly miss her. Described as positively thriving on all the travelling she does and being in new places, this incredible mare is now on her last jaunt and it will be interesting to see how she eventually settles down to a serene life in the paddocks.

Update 1100: Another great article, this one documenting Barbaro's journey: Barbaro: America's Horse Continues to Beat the Odds Six Months Later. It includes the following excerpt:

Regardless of whether Barbaro is able to recover sufficiently to cover a mare and produce colts and fillies, his sad injury has brought about some remarkably positive events. Through Alex Brown's postings on Fair Hill trainer Tim Woolley's website at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com, thousands of the popular bay colt's fans check in each day hoping to read of any change, positive or negative, in his condition. They maintain a lively comment board and refer to themselves as "Friends of Barbaro"--FOBs. This band of fervent animal lovers has become a force to reckon with as far as mobilizing the public and elected officials regarding animal-friendly issues such as recent anti-horse slaughter legislation. And the horrific and highly-publicized injuries of Barbaro and dozens of other thoroughbreds recently have led track owners to consider using new, improved materials such as Polytrack.

Keep up the good work "Fans" of Barbaro and keep calling!

Jeannette received a Call from Harry J. Aleo--Lost in the Fog.

The Barbaro update will again be after training hours.

GOOD MORNING ALEX and all FOB's. Thanks Alex, for the good articles and updates. They are always very well written and interesting.

I wish Michael Matz and Peter Brette a good trip to Florida, a wonderful winter stay there and much success. I'm sure they have mixed emotions about leaving, but I'm also certain they'll make time to come up to visit Barbaro whenever they can in the coming months..

Looking forward to a very positive update today from New Bolton!

What is it they say on the major league baseball commercial..?

    Barbaro and the 9-11 Connection
    Thousands Follow His Recovery Daily
    By Vonda Sines
    Takeaways
At the time of his injury, Barbaro's lifetime earnings stood at more than $2.3 million.
Our fascination with this horse is linked to the terrible events of September 11, 2001.
Twelve thousand Barbaro well-wishers check the same web site each day. Okay. I admit it. Like thousands of others, I check on Barbaro’s progress at least four times a day. Why has this injured horse captured the hearts of so many people?
Frankly, I’m not a horse racing fan. Or wasn’t. Until this congenial bay colt won the Kentucky Derby, I had never heard of him. Born April 29, 2003, Barbaro was sired by Dynaformer and the mare La Ville Rouge. At the time of his injury during the Preakness on May 20, he had seven starts and six wins to his credit. Lifetime earnings: $2,302,200.

Something happened when my husband and I turned on the news after the Preakness and word of Barbaro’s catastrophic injury flashed across the bottom of the television screen. The horse’s plight was riveting. I was already hooked. Would he—could he—possibly make it?

The initial news was a bit misguided. It concentrated on speculating whether Barbaro would ever be able to sire offspring rather than his survival. In the course of just a few days, however, we learned his owners, Gretchen and Roy Jackson, who own Lael Stables in West Grove, PA, intended to spare no expense to save him, as long as he remained reasonably comfortable.

We all began to breathe more easily after the horse’s long surgery. Baskets of flowers, carrots, cards, and monetary donations deluged the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania vet school, where Barbaro remains stabled in intensive care. A fund was started in his honor. We rejoiced when he was briefly reunited with the jockey who undoubtedly saved his life, Edgar Prado, and when he was courted by the Governor of Pennsylvania.

And then there was July 13 and the dreaded laminitis. I first read about it during one of my Internet searches devoted to uncovering any scrap of news about Barbaro. I happened upon Alex Brown’s web site.

Before the Preakness, Brown led a relatively quiet life exercising horses for some of the trainers who used the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, MD. One of them was Tim Woolley, who has kept a stable at Fair Hill for more than 10 years. Barbaro was stabled and trained next to Woolley’s barn at Fair Hill. Brown also maintained the http://www.timwoolleyracing.com web site, which initially contained racing statistics. According to a local publication, prior to the Preakness, the site received fewer than 10 hits per day on average.

Brown came up with the idea of posting Barbaro updates, which he hoped would also increase traffic to the web site. As a result, 12,000 individuals from around the globe check the site each day, hoping for any tidbits about the fallen warrior. It also has a public comments section and publishes photos and videos. Many of the visitors to the site contributed to a birthday celebration for Barbaro’s surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, in August. The site recently reported that the Jacksons also visit it.

Like others who check the site regularly, I have come to depend upon it for the latest news on this winsome horse. I have read that despite the fact that 80 percent of his left rear hoof was removed, 1 centimeter of what we relate to as human cuticle has already regrown. I found out hours before it hit the general media that his cast was unexpectedly changed because of a small crack. I have also followed the progress of other equine heroes-in-the making such as Lost in the Fog, recently diagnosed with inoperable cancer. I have a whole new vocabulary.

So what is it with this horse? Why are we transfixed?

I believe it’s more than Americans’ love for mighty horses such as Sea Biscuit and Secretariat. I submit our love affair with and concern for “America’s Horse” might well be keyed to what happened to this nation on September 11, 2001. We mourned the loss of innocent lives, and we cheered those who survived against almost unbelievable odds. We embraced the exhausted heroes who came home after fighting so hard to help others. And we mourned the heroes who did not return. For all of us, the Twin Towers represented indestructible fortresses that were destroyed before our eyes.

We learned to cherish the underdog, such as the severely-injured Pentagon civilian who started life over despite the scars. We admire Barbaro’s owners, who did the right thing in giving him every chance to survive. We loved Barbaro as a champion, and we cherish him as a courageous survivor. That’s what is it is about this horse.

Thanks Alex for all the good reading material again. I continue to learn from it.

Please remember to make those calls to the Senators re: S.1915. I've already left messages on their voice mail and then I call again on the way home from work and talk to the aide. Some of the Senators are already back in Washington and more will be returning the rest of the week. Let's make our voices heard about S.1915.

Nancy, thanks for the post of that great article. It really is amazing to think of what this website has done.

    ##
It was with a heavy heart that I read the posts from yesterday that included all of the dissention. We are all united in our love for Barbaro, and have worked hard to make a difference. So much good has been done here. Like others, I used to post a lot and was so inspired by the knowledge, dedication and encouragement of people here. Lets keep that positive energy going. I still read faithfully every day, and learn something new from the people here. I hope that today is a better day for the FOBs here.

Susan E. - so happy to read that Felix ate last night. I heard from Longmeadow and will call you with the details.

Jeannette C. - I read about your conversation with Harry Aleo and all of my emotions from Foggy came flooding back. What a wonderful animal and a gracious owner. He is something special.

Jen - it was good to see you back here yesterday! Your posts are always so informative and helpful.

To everyone - happy Tuesday. May our cause unite us today and accomplish great things for the horses!

    Good Day Y'all;
Lovely post Nancy, nice way to start the day...an update day to boot!! Thanks Alex for the Japan Cup video, what an absolutely exciting race. Oiuja Board sure showed how she can run with the boys. I just pray that she rests up well and gets ready for her final career race on the 10th. Glad to hear she's such an avid traveler and loves the attention. Thanks Alex for all you do. Looking forward to a good report from NBC. Sad that is Michael is heading for Florida but I'm sure he'll make his way back to see his champ as soon as he can. Love to all, especially you Barbaro.

Will continue my prayers for Barbaro.

Alex, what you and Tim have given us with this board and your updates will never be forgotten. It's been quite a year, and if one of my years has a title, this one will be "The Year of Barbaro". From the Preakness forward, my perspective has changed in many ways.

Regarding Mr. Aleo... "He said that he has met the Jackson's and they are the kindest and nicest people you would ever want to meet. He has alot of respect for Barbaro and wishes him well in his recovery" my thoughts are he is right. The Jacksons are extraodinary, and he is as well.

Good Morning To You Loyal Fans Of Barbaro.

I am on my old knees, praying and begging with all my heart that we come together as one voice and use all our energy to get the bill passed.

I thought about this last night, if we fail, and the bill does not pass, the horses are the ones that will suffer. Brutally beaten, unwanted, slaughter with unspeakable terms, no home...
WE HAVE TO SAVE THE SISTERS AND BROTHERS OF OUR BELOVED BARBARO!

I want to personally thank the Jacksons, opening up their hearts and sharing with us this magnificent horse, Barbaro.

With his true determination of wanting to live, he has won on the field, he is winning the right to live, he is winning in all of our hearts...

Now, it is our turn...to come together, not as ones, twos, three, fours, but MULTITUDES...AND BE HEARD..

Let each of us do our very best and help those who cannot speak for themselves...

I pray that our Senators open their hearts and pass this bill.
I pray for God to protect all animals from abuse..large or small.
I pray for God to protect our innocent children.
I pray for Barbaro's complete healing and peace of mind.
And... I pray for each of you.

    Have a nice day..

Good morning everyone, and good morning Barbaro.

Robyn, hugs to Nikita and Thanks for the reminder on Charlie Brown's Christmas. That's a classic and a "must watch" this time of year. That, and Rudolph, Miracle on 34th Street, and A Christmas Story (just to name a few!)

Nancy in CT, a wonderful article you posted and what a great way to start the day. Thank you!

SusanW, my Alysheba/JVB buddy, gourmet pizza sounds delicious, even at this hour of the day!

Here's my quandry for the day, ponder this everyone (after you make your calls) and help me with a resolution:

Last night, my husband went to our outside grill to cook some portabello mushrooms (they taste great grilled). When he opened the grill lid, a mouse looked up at him, then scampered inside of it by the coils. We tried to find him, to coax him out but had no luck. My better half is just as much an animal lover as me and refused to light the grill with our new-found friend inside. Yes, it's a mouse and I'm happy he's not INSIDE, but he was cute. I've named him "Peanut", (OK, so I've gone off the deep end).

Here's my dilemna, help me with suggestions on ways to get Peanut away from the grill, and safely out farther in our backyard, perhaps under a rock garden.....I refuse to kill him, would rather never grill again than risk hurting him.

I need help (men in white coats I'm sure) as well as scientifically proven ways to get this mouse out of our grill.

I was away from the board yesterday and that was probably a good thing. I'll be away today too with my mother most of the day, but will be calling on my cell phone our necessary senators.

Everyone, make it a good, productive day today and focus on the horses. That's why we're here.

    Love to all.

Regarding the Sines article, I especially took note of Dr. Richardson's remark about Barbaro's invitation to a weddding....Dr. R said, "...conyeyed Barbaro's regrets, noting the colt had nothing to wear and that the horse had no intention of ramaining monogamous." A little humor from our favorite doctor.....yes???? On a more serious note in another section: "Through Alex Brown's postings on Fair Hill trainer Tim Woolley's website at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com, thousands of the popular bay colt's fans check in each day hoping to read of any change, positive or negative, in his condition. They maintain a lively comment board and refer to themselves as "Friends of Barbaro"-FOBs.

FOBs ...how can any of you consider leaving this site with the above accolades staring you in the face!!!...Go for the Fight!!!! (((((ALL FOBs))))

    Skyler,

Use a live trap, it won't take long at all if you use the right bait. The easiest, and best bait I have ever used is a glob of peanut butter rolled in bird seed. The peanut butter smell attracts them like a magnet, the bird seed keeps it from making a mess.

One thing about mice, if you don't take them far away, the odds are good he'll wind up right back in the same place. I had this problem with my greenhouse. I read that you have to take them at least 5 miles away or else they will wind up back where they started from.

I'm with you, I think they're adorable and I sure wouldn't kill one. I don't even trap them unless I can take them somewhere where they can either find shelter and food, or have time to build a new nest for themselves. Now that it's getting cold, they don't have much time to build a home, and once the ground freezes all bets are off anyway.

And you thought you were "protective" of your little mousie?? Good for you. More people should learn to care for ALL animals.

Here's the morning repost of the repost of the
    THANKSGIVING RECESS STRATEGY
As noted below, it couldn't hurt to contact the DC offices of the senators as well.

MESSAGE FROM DEBRA WI AND SHELLEYA

It is very important that everyone keep calling to express outrage about horse slaughter and ask for support for S1915. However, the calls should be short and polite. As many of you found out recently, you will only get different messages from each office and it will only confuse the issue.

If we look like we are not politically savvy, we will not be taken seriously. This has become VERY political now and we’ve been told that we will NOT actually be seeing what is happening behind the scenes.

It is true that the local offices are more interested in hearing from their constituents. That has been made clear by many of the calls from last week. We need to get more people involved from the states that are on our list….Nevada, Tennessee, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi.

We would suggest that you also leave voice mail messages, send faxes and e-mails to the DC offices of your own senators and the ones mentioned below:

Contact these Senators to ask for action on The American Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act in any vehicle before adjournment. [Any vehicle means any bill that it can be attached to as an amendment, since there's no time for it to be passed on its own]

    Bill Frist
    Mitch McConnell
    Trent Lott
    Harry Reid

Also encourage and thank our two sponsors for their determination to
    get the bill passed -
    Mary Landrieu
    John Ensign

It is extremely doubtful that there is time for this bill to stand of it’s own. It will all be a matter of strategy and where to place it. Our supporters in DC ARE working on this and are trying to come up with the vehicle that will give us the best chance. That’s politics….it’s how our system works!!

We would both like to thank everyone for their commitment and urge you all to keep on fighting. Remember, no one thought it had a chance in the House and it passed with an overwhelming majority!!

Skyler, too funny. And too strange; last night my mom told me a full-grown bunny got into their dryer vent. She was in the laundry room and heard something. They got bunny out, unharmed, and turned him loose. What's up with the wildlife in Omaha???!!! I hope you can get the mouse out!

For all you nostalgia buffs, the house from the movie, The Christmas Story, is up and open for visits in Cleveland, Ohio. A fan of the movie bought the house where they filmed it and totally restored it to the tune of $250,000. People from all over donated vintage furniture to match what was in the movie and yes, the luminous glow of the infamous "leg lamp" can be seen up and down Cleveland Street. Cleveland is indeed awash in its glow. What a hoot!!!

I just spoke to an Aide is Senator Session's DC office who was not familiar with S 1915. He asked what it was about and where it is currently, progress wise.

Guys, I really think AL needs to hear from us. I can't imagine any of those aides not knowing about this bill.

The guy I talked to was a real sweetie. He didn't give his name, but he has a deep voice. He's really nice to talk to. I enjoyed talking to him and it was a nice break from the "mechanical" types. If you have time, please consider calling the AL senators.

In times of change emotions seem to run high. I am not the only one who feels a loss right now, the way I always do when family leaves for distant places and I know I will not see them again for a while. I always grieve privately, acknowledging the source of the emotion, but also reminding myself that the adjustment is part of life's continuing cycle.

I think we are all a little emotional with the change in Barbaro's daily schedule and visitors, the change in communications, the loss of Michael and Peter to whom we feel so close on a daily basis. We worry that Barbaro will grieve, as well, when part of his family takes leave for the southland.

Let's all give each other a hug, give Barbaro our prayers and nightly scritches and butterfly kisses, surround him with the continuing warmth of the love we all have for him to shelter him from this temporary loss. And Alex, too, for that matter - he will be missing these friends with whom he has established such a close communication for the cause of Barbaro.

And then let's put all this nervous energy into the horse slaughter bill - this is not just a leisure pastime, this is a serious cause with serious implications for many lives. There is not much time left this year, and we may or may not be successful. But giving up now, because we were all at sixes and sevens, losing our base of security because Michael and Peter are going south for the winter, would be something we would all deeply regret.

We need all the help we can get. We can't afford to lose a single committed individual to this cause. And most of us can ill afford to lose a friend.

Believe in Barbaro, the Jacksons do. And they also Believe in You.

    What wonderful posts today.

    ## Haven't been able to post for a few days, need to ask for prayers for my 2 special pets, Nala and Over Enough. Nala as some of you know is my 7 year old pit bull that we have had since 6 months and she is my best friend. The bone biopsy came back that she has bone cancer and will be having her leg amputated on Friday. They then will do tests to see if further chemo or radiation is needed. She is a little tired but otherwise feeling ok, she only gets worried when she sees me crying so I need to try to stop.

My 14 year old gelding, Over Enough is a grandson of Alydar and I rescued him off the track 8 years ago. He was treated 1 1/2 years ago for an ethmoid tumor in his nose, it is benign but had to be treated with formaldehide and is very dangerous. He has been bleeding bad for a few days and will be going back to the vet on Thursday as we fear it has come back. The vet is Dr. Richardson's friend, where he watched the Preakness and saw Barbaro. I am dreading these 2 days coming up, thanks for prayers and thoughts.
Special thanks to Janice in Florida for your unwavering support.

I am still calling senators every day, the 2 full page ad in the daily racing form urged people to call senators Byrd and Thad Cochran. I don't know why but I have been including them in my daily calls. Yesterday the girl in Cochran's office said they have received so many calls she is instructed to tally every day on S1915 and let the senator know, the number I call is 202 224-5054. Don't know what his deal is because he voted against us last time but figure it can't hurt to keep calling him.

We couldn't be at a more crucial time for S1915. It is urgent that we get as much support as possible in these final couple of weeks.

    Good morning all:
Senator Mark Dayton (Mn) is a co-sponsor of S.1915 but because of a clerical error he is not listed as such. This will be corrected Monday bringing co-sponsors to 34. Please call Senator Norm Coleman (Mn). He is leaning towards support of the bill so let's push him over the top!

Okay, So I FINALLY get through to Sen. Cochran's office, and promptly trip on my own tongue. I could NOT say the name of that bill correctly no matter how hard I tried.

The aide was laughing as much as I was, but she said "Don't worry about it, I know which one you mean, I've gotten over 70 calls supporting 1915 already this morning"

So I thanked her for knowing what I was saying, even when I couldn't manage to say it. LOL

Over 70 calls-not bad, not bad at all.

I sent a get well card to Fondmort a couple weeks ago, and just received a reply from the hospital.

They thanked me for my card and wishes for Fondmort and say

HOT FLASH....OOPPPSSS I MEAN NEW FLASH.... LOL
I've exchanged emails with Eddie Kilroy about a collaborative effort scheduled for Monday 12/4, the day the Senators return. I've asked him to rally his pro S1915 listeners over the next few days and we'll have our own Nat'l Call In Day. Of course, for us every day is a call in day but if we can increase the numbers Monday it will remind the Senators that we have not forgotten the mission. The strategy remains the same unless otherwise directed by Shelley & Debra. I told Eddie I would provide names & numbers of our targeted Senators. SO PLEASE TREAT MONDAY AS A DAY TO CALL IN DEBTS, BEG, PLEAD, TRADE FAVORS, whatever it takes so we can tally some really big numbers.

Renee, I think it is Decon. I will never understand its' use, The mice crawl away to expire somewhere. It affects all other critters in the 'chain'. I have rattlers, ravens, and bugs that I would worry about if I used that stuff. Aside from dog poo, I have a healthy eco system on my 20 acres, and it is a safe haven for all of us. I wish I were rich. I could rescue horses as well.

Skyler, we are truly kindred spirits. I've had many a mouse try to visit via vents, bird feeders, whatever. They are such adventurous little creatures. We have these beautiful little buff-colored species with brown ear and feet and the "regular mouse-colored" mice, and they are all so endearing. I don't want them to get in and become cat food, although I honestly don't think my kiddens would really eat them, they'd probably hurt them, as those instincts run so deep. I'd much prefer they "hunt and catch" their toys, which they do very well. I have found a nearly fool-proof method of catching the little guys, with a live trap just big enough for small critters. I put a little cloth or something to snuggle in with a blob of cottage cheese or toast with peanut butter or honey, (just enough to give some added incentive, either one can really gum up a small animal, necessitating a whole new set of remedies) Either is very tempting to the little ones, who think they have new homes in the cages, when they go in to eat and find themselves unable to get out. Then it's off to the open spaces around our little community. We are literally surrounded on all sides, so that's easy. Can't say that I've seen one in a long while, so as far as I know, they don't come back, if let go far enough away from the house. But they are so dang cute it is really tempting to allow them to hang around.

    Skyler,
Don't know if you'll see this but last Sunday on NPR's "Calling All Pets" they gave a simple "recipe" for deterring rodents. Get some cotton balls, saturate them with peppermint oil, which they hate but it does not harm them, and place cotton balls in strategic spots, ie. in this case inside your grill and hopefully it will drive peanut out.

Michael Matz commented how tall Barbaro had become
in his six months hospital confinement, he is now over 17 hands, which is an extremely large horse,
this morning on TV they had a horse, that was the
smallest horse. [bet you were wondering were I was
going with this story]. Thought you'd like this wonderful article.

    The World's Smallest Horse

Burleson Arabians is the proud owner of Black Beauty, the World's Smallest Horse as officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records in 2001. She held her title until 2007 when Thumbelina measured-in at only 17 inches tall.
Black Beauty is listed in Guinness World Records as the World's Smallest Horse from September 2001 until 2007.

Black Beauty was born June 6, 1996 as was an astonishing dwarf miniature horse from birth. Too small to nurse from her mother, her mother would lie down to feed her. At birth it was apparent that she was the world's smallest living horse and possibly the smallest horse in the world that ever lived. She was less than 12 inches tall at birth, weighing less than 10 pounds. She was small enough to fit into a coat pocket.

Black Beauty is exceptionally friendly and always knickers to say hello. She also likes to come into the house and enjoys watching television (Westerns are her favorite) and sharing popcorn. She also enjoys sitting in your lap and being rubbed.

To qualify as the world's smallest horse, Guinness Book of Records required that she be inspected by a Vet and be carefully measured for height by independent witnesses to confirm her status as the world's smallest horse.

Black Beauty is a dwarf miniature horse and at age five years-old currently measures on 18.5 inches tall (at her withers) and she was the world's smallest horse from 2001 to 2007, and the smallest horse in recorded history according to the Guinness Book of Records is now only 17 inches tall.

    Dear Joyce,

Always have room in our hearts to pray for one more. Will begin praying for Alexis immediately. I had my kitty Thaddeus on sub-q fluids for a couple of years, they really helped and gave him a much better quality of life in his last years...perhaps you just need to up the dose? I'll be praying for a good call from the vet.

I don't know what I would have done without all of you when my Zeke was in danger. (hit by car, broken leg)

You all came together in prayer and love, and I really believe that your intervention and care, along with Gods blessings and plan for Zeke, led the way to an almost complete recovery for Zeke. He is doing great, and has about another month till he is off the disabled list.

Joyce needs our prayer and numbers right now.

    ##

    Thank you all.

Alexis is a shepard/something (Elkhound??)mix I adopted from Michigan Anti-Cruelty over six years ago. She is now ten years old and watching her health decline is tearing my heart out.

I've been giving her fluids, doggy meal replacement liquids and NutriCal. She ate a little bit of chicken and hamburger last night but again shows no interest in food today. She's on anti-biotics for a tooth infection and I'm giving her Compazine to control the vomiting.

I know it's wrong, but I am angry with the powers that be. Over the last year, I lost my mom (my best friend), a dear friend, watched several friends battle cancer, lost my job and am undergoing my own health scare. I just want to know when God will be done taking things away from me.

Off to have a long, hard cry...

    Hello All
What a beautiful day here in Kennett Square. Have a great day.

a quick Fondmort update from Sue Mcmullen:

I've just spoken to the hospital. Overall, he's doing very well. He's bright and eating well but when I asked if he's out of danger, I was told that with a broken pelvis you couldn't say that at this stage. Given the nature of his injury they can't allow him to lie down so he has to be watched 24 hours a day, plus he's obviously tied up. But at least he's still with us and it's certainly a more optmistic outlook than a few weeks ago. Fingers crossed.

Thank you Alex for the updates that you give on Barbaro. I read every day to make sure he is doing okay and any other news that pertains to him, the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson or NBC. He is very special and I like most of the others are now taking a look at horse racing and the anti slaughter bill to protect these beautiful animals.

I wrote Mr. Aleo after Fog was gone to let him know so many people were thinking of him and Mr. Gilchrist. It is so sad to put an animal down and it means so much to hear it from others that have been through it. He is a very kind, sweet man and I am looking forward to watching his new horse.

Just hope surfacing the tracks will help to stop the fatal injuries. Pine Island was beautiful and should not have happened either.

Thank you all for writing the news of other horses that are hurting or in dangerof being put down. Yes, I have called the Senators and left messages for them to co-sponsor this bill on anti-alaughter. Hopefully with our calling we can get this passed. Mrs. Jackson has been an inspiration to all and she is to be commended for her efforts.

Barbaro is very special and now has brought people from all over the country and world to watch his progress. Some day maybe we will meet wherever the Jacksons decide to send him and I will remember the names that I have been reading on this site.

Once again thank you Alex and thank you FOB for all your information that you provide.

It just seems the list gets longer each day and can't figure out why its all happening now. Felix, BDude and BDudette, hang in there. Prayers also for Nala and Over Enough.

Skyler, you are showing such compassion for that little mouse. I as well have been labeled as crazy for not killing mice or spiders - and have freaked out when people have...my question to them is - who is the crazy one? the one who wants to try to help preserve life or the one who wants to destroy it?

Alex, what a great article about Barbaro and about the TWR site. For all the angst of yesterday, we can all band together to work for causes that help others - animal or human.

And isn't that what its all about?

    More later.

    Take care, everybody.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FOB AND FRIEND ... SALLY IN KEY WEST! I HOPE YOU HAVE A GLORIOUS DAY TODAY!!
    ################

    NANCY IN CT:

Thank you for the wonderful article you posted ... a definite winner! Especially this:

"Through Alex Brown's postings on Fair Hill trainer Tim Woolley's website at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com, thousands of the popular bay colt's fans check in each day hoping to read of any change, positive or negative, in his condition. They maintain a lively comment board and refer to themselves as "Friends of Barbaro"-FOBs. This band of fervent animal lovers has become a force to reckon with as far as mobilizing the public and elected officials regarding animal-friendly issues such as recent anti-horse slaughter legislation..."

All the more reason to keep this site respectable...

About the little mouse! OH NO!!! And I had the strangest dream last night that my cat found a dead mouse and was trying to REVIVE it! He didn't kill it (my cat's a lover!! LOL) but he was carrying it around hoping it would wake up!!

I don't know what to tell you as far as your dilemma is concerned, but you must keep him away from the grill so that he doesn't end up being "Marinated Mouse on the Grill!!" And knowing you, my friend, that definitely will NEVER happen!!

Yesterday is gone ... all we have is this very moment of "NOW!" We don't even have tomorrow or even an hour from now ... we have this moment of Now! Let's make the best of all the positive energy and love we can 'corral' among the FOB Community and do all that we can to make a difference where it really counts ... for Barbaro and for all the horses. That's a commitment to respect, be proud of, embrace and admire. All else pales in comparison right now. Never Give Up as Janice in Florida posts so wonderfully!!

I imagine that it's a very bittersweet time for all of Bobby's connections heading south for the winter. I can't even fathom being Michael or Peter and having to say "Goodbye for now" to their friend and companion, Barbaro. Just thinking of how they must be feeling brings tears to my eyes, but I know that Bobby will be "fine" and that he will be in the best of hands, the best of care, and surrounded by all the love he could possibly want or need. I trust Gretchen and Roy Jackson, I trust Dr. Richardson and everyone else here who will be the caregivers in the months ahead. Bobby will be "just fine" ... feel it, believe it and know it!!

Here is excerpt if y'all don't mind taking up the space... thank you Barbaro, for your part in this, and to the people who care. Cheers, Susan in Saratoga

    "Synthetic track surfaces, at a cost of at least $31-million for installation at Aqueduct and Belmont main tracks as well as Belmont and Saratoga training tracks;

    To All

HARRY ALEO IS GOING TO BE 87 ON DECEMBER 7(NEXT WEEK)!

I posted this on another thread yesterday (re: Quite A Rush) --

This is for Everyone interested in Harry Aleo's horses; and of course in the late great Lost In The Fog.

Harry Aleo is a true gentleman. They don't make 'em like they used to, that is for sure!

To make a long story short, as I was walking out the door the other day actually it was last Monday or Tuesday a day or two before the races at Bay Meadows last week, when my cell phone rang.

It was "my friend Harry Aleo"

He had telephoned me in answer to a query I had posed before him.
What a delightful conversation we had over the phone for at least 30 minutes!.
When Isaid "You can't be and 86 year old" Harry's answer ---
    "I'll be 87 on December 7!

As I was thinking b about what type of card I should write to "my new Friend"...
    I had a thought.

What do you all think if we each contributed a small amount to GEVA --- the foundation in Northern California that's a home for retired thoroughbreds --- which is Harry's charity of choice. in honour of Harry Aleo's 87th birthday

I know that there are so many claims for donations; I thought it would be a nice gesture for a man who never ignored any one who was kind enough to write to him about LITF. ---And he did so in such a personal and individual way

Donations, in the name of Lost in the Fog, may be made to the Glen Ellen Vocational Academy (GEVA), an equine retirement facility located in the Sonoma County town of Glen Ellen. GEVA provides a home for retired racehorses as well as for horses that are injured or simply in need of a home.

GEVA inc., Equine Retirement Foundation, P. O. Box 2101, Glen Ellen, CA 95442. For more information on GEVA, visit www.glenellenfarms.com/geva.

This is the charity of choice for anyone wanting to donate in memory of Lost in The Fog or to honour Harry Aleo on his 87th birthday December 7, 2006.

I think I might start a new thread with this information in honour of Mr. Aleo;as there doesn't seem to be much response on this thread as it concerns a particular horse of his.
    Happy Thanksgiving week to all!!

I'm so very sorry for all that you've been through and are still going through. It seems sometimes that everything bad happens all at once and life gets pretty overwhelming.

I know how you feel, really. I lost my beloved boxer Bo a year ago (he was 12) and my dear grandmother just two weeks ago. All of that while suffering through health issues myself.

Joyce, keep fighting. Fight for your self, fight for your sweet-sounding pup, fight for happiness. You are certainly in the right place for friends, prayers, well wishes, support from those who have walked in the same shoes - your days in the sun will come. The rain (tears) will stop and you will see sunlight. Until then, you can borrow my umbrella anytime. Blessings to you.

Hi Debbie ... I don't know of any offhand but you might start with www.equibase.com ... many people here are familiar with that site and enjoy it for it's wealth of information about horses, etc. Another good site is www.pedigreequery.com. Try both and see if other links come up for you from either or both of these. Good Luck and have fun!!

    Family,
I have gotten a few emails saying I posted on a thread called "complaints against the main board".
It seems the thread was started yesterday, and I can tell you I have not been on the message boards for a few days due to taking a medication that blurs my vision (as if it wasn't bad enough).
I would never make a comment against anyone on here, and have worked for anti slaughter too.
I didn't even sign on yesterday, but someone did and got my password (which I have since changed).
Time stamp today 1:13 was not me either.
I am dealing with the situation and I apologise to
    family and posse.

HERE'S a great post from someone's blogspot in favor of Barbaro being S.I.'s "Sportsman of the Year" ... now this is uplifting, enjoyable and heart-warming to read ...

    Tuesday, November 28, 2006
    Sportsman of the year
I don't want to get all mushy or crazy on anyone, but Barbaro should be considered for SI's sportsman of the year this year.

Like the Eclipse, the award is based on something more than stats and figures. Some of the "odd winners are: Red Sox Nation (04), Athletes who Care (87), so their is a precedent to not name the guy with the most home runs or most money earned. Like Barbaro they've named figures with similar facial features, athletes on drugs, and athletes prone to break their leg. Furthermore, for representing most of the sports world pretty evenly over the last 50 years the last horse racing person was Steve Cauthen in 1977, so the sport is due for some recognition.

Let's only spend one paragraph on what Barbaro did on the track, as I don't think that's the basis of this article and we all know we could write novels about his racing exploits. He won graded stakes on turf and dirt, won one of the most decisive Kentucky derbies in history, and was one of the most credible Triple Crown prospects in 10 years. Not to mention winning the Derby off a 5 week layoff that hadn't been done since Needles in 1956. There is no question that he was a special horse. I believe trainer Matz when he says we did not see the bottom of the horse. Agree or disagree with the above that's fine, it's not the point.

The point is that Barbaro had a much larger affect on our sport than his races indicate. It was in his injury and recovery that the nation has gone wild about Barbaro: He receives more fan mail than a lot of other sports 'heroes', in his name the UPenn Vet School has raised thousands of dollars, his owners have been championed wherever they go.

And finally, his lasting effect is that any track that switches to a synthetic surface could also be known as 'a track that Barbaro built.' I don't think it's any coincidence that we're seeing more tracks switch to a synthetic surface. True, California was already in the works, but a surface switch is now being championed by anyone attached to racing, or hoping to be attached to racing. In fact, let me rephrase, I don't think it's any coincidence that track surface switches are becoming front page news. It's no surprise that these discussions are front page news (in racing media) because people care.

Barbaro got people to care and help futher change in a sport that hasn't been cared for or changed since 1977 (if you use SI as your gauge), and that's noteworthy and deserving of the Sportsman of the Year award.

I am KVELLING MIT NACHAS once more, seeing Alex posting a report direct from Mom Jackson who was herself in direct contact with the horse's mouth.
    How lucky are we!

    S 1915 progress report:

Today's 16 calls done. Only one answering machine (Harry Reid), and all the aides said they would pass my opinion along (regardless of my State). I want to report that Sen. Ensign's DC aide, Mike (we've probably ALL talked to him already, very courteous and well-informed), stressed that we should focus on CALLING OUR OWN SENATORS. And one of the other aides (I think Sen. Lott's) said they have been getting a lot of calls in favor of S 1915.

When I said "in any vehicle," one of the aides (can't remember who, sorry I didn't take notes, I usually do, but was calling with cats in lap) said he didn't know where the talk had come from about tacking it on as an amendment to something else; he said that is not going to happen, said it can't happen, that whole bills are not tacked on as amendments; said the only way it would be voted on would be on its own, out of the Committee onto the floor. (That is the opposite of what Shelley A has reported, isn't it?) Also said not to expect to hear anything about scheduling until next week.

From all of which, all I can deduce and recommend is KEEP CALLING your OWN senators, and don't worry too much about what we hear in the nature of prognostication. Spread the word and the relevant phone numbers to your non-horse-site contacts in your own respective States.

Keep it up! This can happen. This should happen. This must happen.

    Cathy et al:

Cat food has really improved over the years. I can remember when I was small, there was this one brand that looked like a dark brown glob, it was supposed to be tuna, but I swear it smelled more like a cat box. The cats always loved the stuff. I could never figure out why they'd even eat it.

Cat food nowadays looks and smells good enough to be on a dinner plate. No, before anyone asks, I haven't tried any of it, but my cats sure love the stuff.

ACN is great news, night by night...day by day. As Barbaro continues to lift us up, we too, will continue to lift him up...with our prayers and in "his work" on behaf of the horses and eachother.

United, we stand. Look to Barbaro as our connection. Take strength and inspiration from him. Whatever problems and differences seek to divide us, shake 'em off, like the biting, buzzing annoyances that they are.

Undefeated Barbaro looks toward the wire in this long home stretch. We are with him in every campaign.

Please keep calling and e-mailing to promote S1915. Have faith in the cause. Stay connected to eachother. And remember that Barbaro needs our strength just as much as we take inspiration from his.

National Day of the Horse is coming in December.....Believe!

I feel that they are still using pain management to keep Barbaro comfortable, and maybe quiet. I believe he is relaxed, and at ease in his surroundings. I'm no expert, just a guess. They cut back a little on Fondmort's meds so he would feel a little discomfort, just to keep him from moving around too much.

Susan E - so glad for you and Felix, on seeing your 2 o'clock post reporting Felix is eating and feeling better. Let's hope he's adjusting to the pain meds and that they do their job for a long time to come. Did you get my email re certain natural additives to consider? Offer still stands (re Esiak). Re eyedropper vs turkey baster to get liquid nutrients into him, I've always preferred an oral syringe over an eyedropper; more flexibility re how much to push how fast. Can get as a human baby item, or from your vet or pharmacist. And down the line, can get pasty nutrients (such as baby food, pureed food) into him with an oral syringe that you couldn't with an eyedropper. ttyl - much love, CJ the craziest catlady

SusanE I am SO HAPPY!!! Good boy, Felixkiddeninnasooot. My kiddens love that new Fancy Feast too. It smells wonderful, too. I've always thought that the true test of a quality food is how it looks after it has been sitting for a bit. Mine generally like the gravy off their canned food and then go back and nibble at it. Some stuff doesn't even bear a reasonable resemblance to how it looked when it came out of the can. This new Fancy Feast formula doesn't "sit" long enough to be examined after a couple of hours in the dish. That has to say something for the quality. My crew turns up collective noses as some of the premium food that is a lot more expensive but scarf this stuff up like starving hyenas.

I have no connection with Purina or the manufacturers of cat food, nor do I play anyone on TV who does.

Hay, I'm getting hungry. Does anyone have any crackers??? :)

wow, when it rains, it pours, doesn't it. My prayers for you and your babies. I have such a soft spot in my heart for little pit bull girls, especially when they laugh all the time and wiggle their cute little roly-poly behinds when their tails go out of control. I know she'll do fine with her surgery, and will be anxiously waiting to hear of her progress.

Have a HUGE soft spot for TB boys too (no DUH) I pray your boy will be healed. Sounds as though he is in great hands, if only by association :)

Take care. Love to all of you

All you catfood lovers out there: My Sydney has ALWAYS been a dry food eater. The other day we got a sample of Fancy Feast in her new bag of ONE. Gave her a tablespoonful . . . OMG . . . now she expects a tablespoon as an appetizer every evening. I'm getting the "feline food shark" thing, too . . . for the first time in a long time. We both deserve it!!

    NATIONAL DAY OF THE HORSE-
    Thanks for the reminder, Otherlyn!

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:1:./temp/~c1089Ic2Hx::

    "RESOLUTION

Designating December 13, 2004, as National Day of the Horse and encouraging the people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States.

    Whereas the horse is a living link to the history of the United States;

    Whereas without horses, the economy, history, and character of the United States would be profoundly different;

    Whereas horses continue to permeate the society of the United States, as witnessed on movie screens, on open land, and in our own backyards;

    Whereas horses are a vital part of the collective experience of the United States and deserve protection and compassion;

Whereas because of increasing pressure from modern society, wild and domestic horses rely on humans for adequate food, water, and shelter; and

Whereas the Congressional Horse Caucus estimates that the horse industry contributes much more than $100,000,000,000 each year to the economy of the United States: Now, therefore, be it

    Resolved, That the Senate--
    (1) designates December 13, 2004, as `National Day of the Horse', in recognition of the importance of horses to the security, economy, recreation, and heritage of the United States;
    (2) encourages all people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States; and
    (3) requests that the President issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States and interested organizations to observe the day with appropriate programs and activities."

If you didn't get a chance to read Joe's message yesterday on TB Friends, I would like to share a couple of things that Joe wrote:

"We said goodbye to Treats, and we hardly knew him. Treats came from the killer pens on Saturday, covered in urine and poop, and after a quick bubble bath left for his new home with Claudia of Sacramento. Earlier this year, Claudia went with us on two public trips to the killer pens, and she rescued two horses. An Arabian mare who could hardly walk but now she is healthy, and a quarter horse gelding who carries her grandson all over the apple orchards. Claudia saw the photos of Treats on the morning journal, so she immediately phoned to say her trailer was hooked up. And before the rain became serious Treats was at his new home enjoying a warm stall and a hot bran mash. Three days ago Treats was doomed. But now all he has to do is cry out a little, and someone will come running. It's service with a smile. Alabama on his barn cd player....

It is November 27th, which means we say Happy Birthday to Allie of Salt Lake who today becomes a teenager. Allie writes us long letters, and last year she rescued a thoroughbred race horse from a small track near Cedar City. She named him Wind, because the killer asked Allie how much cash she had and Allie showed him some money which blew away in the wind. A mad scramble, and the gelding stood still. Most of the money lost and Allie cried, so the killer says take the horse anyway. Without the wind Allie could not afford him. The wind and tears melted the heart of a horse killer."

Now that I am, shall we say, called to action, I have built upon that knowledge on my own. And as you say, the Senate needs to be reminded of what they themselves wrote and that we keep track of what they do.

For those of you interested in Harry Aleo (owned) and Greg Gilchrist (trained) horses. here is news of Harry's two year old firebrand colt, VICARINO, from the San Francisco Chronicle yesterday:

" Vicarino, who set a track record of 1:07.34 for 6 furlongs in the Harvest Festival Futurity on Oct. 13 at the Big Fresno Fair, is one of seven 2-year-olds nominated to Saturday's Winners Foundation Stakes at Bay Meadows. "

It would be (another) wonderful birthday present for Harry if Vicarino puts on another show like his stablemate, QUITE A RUSH, did last week.

I believe it is possible to get live video from Bay Meadows, and it is certainly possible to see the race replays for free by using CALRACING.COM.

Edie - who asked above how to see Showing Up's Race 6 at Hollywood Park on Sunday, go to CalRacing.Com and register for free. You can then access the races for both Hollywood Park and Bay Meadows, by choosing the date, the venue and the race number.

    Carol in SD,

Re Harry Aleo's QUITE A RUSH: There is a folder in the forum under Horse Racing entitled "Harry Aleo's filly Quite a Rush" which has some good info in it, and some links which are quite wonderful.

One of the links can be accessed by going to this message:

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=timwoolley&msg=2105.23

If you will click on the connection there, it will take you to the 32 photos of the Lost in the Fog Memorial at GGF. Harry's three year old, SMOKEY STOVER, is shown being schooled in the paddock by Fog's groom in photos 19, 20 and 21. QUITE A RUSH is in photos 22 through the end, showing her getting set for her maiden race, racing, and then in the winner's circle with Harry and his wife, Greg Gilchrist, etc.

You can access more information about any horse, including QUITE A RUSH, by going to

    http:www.pedigreequery.com/

At that site, after you type in the name you want to query, be sure to click on the little icon(if there are two, one is a photo) to the right of the horse's name in bold after it brings up the information. That has further info on the horse.

    Carol in SD -

I think that link to the slide show of Lost in the Fog's memorial and Quite A Rush's maiden race that I gave above does not work. Try this one:

This is a slide show, several others photos are from her race and win.

    http://www.finalturngallery.com/LITF-Memorial-Day/Race_3_Quite_A_Rush_Wins

You can go forward and back on the slide show, and see SMOKEY STOVER on 19-21-21 (has no saddle).

    Hope this works...

Pray they do something, like go after the Alabama senators :) As I told them, Most Alabama people have no clue this atrocity is happening in the U.S.

Alex, as far as who I would vote for, it is too hard to choose. They need to have 2 categories:
SportsHUMAN of the year and SportsHORSE of the year :) Then both of them would be honored. I do have to say though that Barbaro may have a slight lead in my heart - he is just such in inspiration and a true hero in the face of such adversity.

And, don't they know that we need a bigger report after waiting two weeks? Like, what is the brand of guaze they are using to wrap his leg, and how many times does he get up and down a day, and how many centimeters is the left hind now, and how many more ounces did he gain, and are his favorite apples red or green this week, and . . . I'm just being silly.

So happy he's continuing to do so well. What a mammoth inspiration, no?

Another thing they like to live in is a cement block with the big holes in it. They don't like mothballs or cayenne pepper or hotsauce either.

Shelley in CA, thanks very much for the information. I just saw Showing Up's race. Watching him run down the stretch made me think he was in a rush to get somewhere else. He and Mr. B were stable mates. I wonder how they got along?

Alex thanks for the valuable update about Our Mr. B. Both he and Dr. R have established enormous legacies, and it is difficult to choose between the two. Would it demean either one to have them share the award?

This afternoon I watched part of The Electric Horseman. I had seen it some time ago, but this time I was looking at it in a different way. Robert Redford was saving one horse from greedy people, but everyone involved with HR 503 and S1915 are trying to save many horses from greedy people.

Mr. B, I hope you had a good day and were able to get outside. You keep the progress going and we'll keep the candles glowing.

I am in pain. I have contacted 1/3 of the Senate today, most by email due to budget issues. But so what if my wrist hurts and my back aches? No one is going to put me in a tight little truck, deprive me of food and water and sleep, prod me and beat me and whip me, and then hang me by my leg and cut me up while I scream.

But that is not to demean or discount the EXCELLENCE and dedication of the New Bolton Staff - each and every single one of them. I cannot express my gratitude for their devotion and expertise, and discipline in keeping Barbaro on the right track (pun intended). They must be so happy and proud that they've protected him and led him along, through the woods, at times very dark. They should be.

Hi All: Thanks so much for your well wishes and prayers for my little Rosie. She done good. I spoke to the trainer today who said she came out of the race absolutely perfect. In fact she came out of it so good that he said it doesn't even look like she raced. He said for her next race, he wants to stretch her out a bit. It will probably be after the new year at Philadelphia Park. We also heard from her jockey who can't get enough of her. He said that she is a total professional and it's like she's been doing this for years. He also told us, he doesn't think she reached her full potential yet and can turn in to a champion racehorse. I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of her. She is just such a sweetheart and I love her so much.

Oh, I loved all the names for the Barbaro/Rosie foals. Wouldn't that be something? A Dynaformer/Stormcat combo. I can dream can't I?

Anyway, I have tons of pictures of Rosie but I'm really not sure how to post them. You can, however, check out her baby picture at our Fantasy Lane website. It's www.fantasylanestable.com. Go into the class of 2006 and you will see her as well as GlideNSeek. Walk is there as well in the class of 2005. I believe his win picture is on the main page.

Take care all and thanks again.

In the letters I fax, this is the paragraph I use:

"The Senate Resolution that approved the Day of the Horse (December 13) encourages the people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States. To protect these incredible icons of America, we must pass a permanent ban on the slaughter of American horses for foreign export."

IF you want a printer-friendly version of the full DAY OF THE HORSE resolution, click this link and then click printer-friendly in the upper right-hand corner. I had to reduce it to 75% to fit on one page.

Update 1104: For Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, would you vote for "Barbaro"
go to Barbaro left hand side of that page.
    What is it!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at November 28, 2006 11:40 PM

Alex, They called him Dr W Richardson... Not Dr. Dean Richardson :)

Posted by: Shannon & Zeena at November 28, 2006 11:42 PM

    Alex,

Did any of the horses get hurt at Fairhill today? I heard there was a shoting at the Double Trouble stables and a stable worker is in critical condition at Christiana Hospital.

Posted by: Jill E at November 28, 2006 11:42 PM

Oh, one more thing, I think it's an impossible choice between Dr. Richardson and Barbaro. They're like peanut butter and jelly or ham and eggs-you have to have on with the other.
Couldn't there be two Sportsmen of the Year? I know they could make an exception given the remarkable actions of both Barbaro and Dr. Dean.
Anyway, I'm glad I don't have to decide!!!

OOOOOPPPPSSSS...I think some of those last names might be names for other categories...BREEDERS...
So I am confused...there are BREEDERS mixed in with TRAINERS...

    Where did you get it?

Posted by: Pamela at November 28, 2006 11:44 PM

Or I dunno...B is out of the splint.. thats all that matters :) Go Barbaro!

Carol, It's too bad that it seems all the horses who are good are all retiring. Retiring due to injury is one thing and I expect that, However it just seems that the list goes on and on. Henny Hughes, Berni and now Sharp Humor etc. It's getting rare to see a good horse over the age of 6-7.

Good afternoon to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!
    ########
Here is the first order of business completed by me up to this point in time. I have Emailed the following Senators. They are: Stevens 4 times, McCain 8 times, Snowe 4 times, Smith 4 times, Bill Nelson 4 times, Frist 8 times, McConnell 6 times, Pryor 6 times, Cantwell 4 times, and Murray 4 times. I too have felt a burst of energy today, and decided to take advantage of it! May possibly try for more later, but need a break right now.
    ########
Yes, it is COLD here today! In Snohomish, it was all of 23 degrees F earlier, and when the sun goes down, it will get colder still. There is a warm front expected to come in on Wednesday going on Thursday, which will make for some nasty travel conditions with additional precipitation until the warmer air settles in and starts to melt all the ice and snow that is still on the ground and roads!
    ########
Nancy in CT, very nice essay on why Barbaro is such a popular horse! I couldn't have said it better! Another reason I think the Big Guy has held us for so long is that with all the bad stuff going on everywhere, he is one of the few entities providing hope and positive feelings for all of us here and in the world! What a Horse!
    ########
More later. Now to light some candles and take a break!

Warmest regards from Laura S. in the frozen tundra known as SNOW!-homish, WA! BRRRRRRRRR!

    Socorro,

Thank you for the wonderful photos of Showing Up and the Jacksons at Hollywood Park on Saturday. Will you please thank your son for some wonderful action photography, and also for those candids of people watching Showing Up! Did he know that was Roy, standing back there, and Barclay also Showed Up in a number of the photos! Barclay doesn't like to go (er, "come", in my case) to the West Coast, so it was a real honor that he accompanied his new wonder horse (after watching his OTHER wonder horse, NoBiz, on Saturday!). These owners and trainers are definitely committed to their charges, and don't we love them for it...

It's been an excellent day and I hope we rattled some senators' cages today... knowing we WON'T go away.

NO splint - WOW !! The miracle grows.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at November 28, 2006 11:49 PM

I loved that Dr. Dean thinks the comfort on the growing-growing-growing hoof remains surprisingly good. Dr. Dean is a superb doctor. Once again, when the laminitis stuck, he must have been under intense pressure and just did what he does best. And although I am awe struck by his skill and haven't a clue how he does what he does, HE DOES IT... And no splint... WOW

And besides a having a brilliant doctor and staff, there are so many prayers wrapped around Barbaro, well, the power of prayer truly goes a long way. I continue to send my daily dose.

I am so happy to read New Bolton's update on our miracle boy, just wonderful.....I do have a couple of questions that hae been plaguing me though. Since Bobby has done so well, why does it seem that in recent injuries similar to his, more owners don't opt to try treatment and instead euthanize? My guess is that is probably the financial factor. When a bone breaks the skin in an injury, is there always NO hope? Could heavy duty antitiotics ever better the prognosis??? Also just want to say that as much as I would love to see Bobby be a Daddy, I worry about the physical effort for him to do so on a compromised set of legs. For now, I am just grateful for our Miracle.

Thankfully many people and horses have departed for the winter, but still...when we think of what could have happened; what did happen is horrifying enough...Alex, I am grateful you and the horses are all right. I devoutly hope the stable worker who was shot will recover fully. Was this some sort of domestic incident?

What a delightful article by FRANZ LIDZ (that Alex linked to via Dr Dean's name)...I cannot believe that I missed it all this time, today...just one more plug for reading glasses!LOL

I thoroughly enjoyed the story of MR LIDZ/DR DEAN/and the PET LLAMA....
Can you imagine having the honorable, but "genially grouchy" Dr Dean on hand to take care of your LLAMA? Such FUN! I am sure there is one REALLY grateful LLAMA in the neighborhood...and the star treatment afforded to all of those who are admitted to NBC certainly must have helped.

HHHMMMMM...now where can I find a LLAMA SUIT so I can meet my hero!? Although pretending to have gastric distress and spitting is hardly my idea of a way to impress your idol!

Carol in SD, and anyone else interested in Harry Aleo's VICARINO (and QUITE A RUSH) -

If you go to this website of photos taken by Robbie in Fresno at the Big Fresno Fair, you can see pictures of VICARINO as well as more photos from LOST IN THE FOG's memorial where QUITE A RUSH raced.

    http://www.rmurimage.com/

If you click on the Lost in the Fog name on the left side of the cover page, it will take you to the photos. VICARINO in Fresno is in the bottom middle section - also more photos of Harry and Russell Baze, the "almost" (maybe tomorrow) winningest rider of all time, who is both QUITE A RUSH's and VICARINO's jockey.

Just off the phones for the day with Senators. My calling cards have no minutes on any of them!! Tomorrow I'll plead for Jim to buy me a replacement!Thought this might be an uplifting note of interest : My friend Claudia in Md. wrote to me and has taken her Anti-slaughter complaints to her good friend a county Commissioner and he's promised to make some waves at the lower Gov't levels and said, "let's see if we can't get it to work it's way on up to the top!!" I thought this was a note worthy of mentioning! Hope Claudia gets the time to make it over to visit the board here!!

Alex, what's this I read here? Some of the Fair Hill folks goin' postal, or what? Never heard about what happened till now. Hope all are fine and not comin' back in packin'!! WoW!

Hope things are quiet at Fair Hill. I hate to think of anybody being hurt in a place that brings such peace to so many people.

Alex, I did notice the quote from Dr. R. Seems Barbaro knows what to do - AGAIN. His intelligence never ceases to amaze me. So many of us have commented that Barbaro knows what he needs to do to recover. That intelligence and instinct will get him thru this winter with Michael and Peter down South for the next few months. I think Mrs. Jackson is going to be sure somebody is there to see him every day. I'd volunteer...:)Knowing that 30% of the left hoof has grown is also very encouraging.

Prayers to all those who are sick, sad or lonely or who have sick furbabies. Now I have to hug my girls, Nomi and Tara.

THE HORSE RACING BLOG THAT CELEBRATES YELLOW JOURNALISM AND THE TABLOID MENTALITY.

    Tuesday, November 28, 2006
Hey Bernardini, Watch Out For Those Third Party Candidates?

What do Ross Perot, Ralph Nader and Discreet Cat have in common?

All have played or could play the spoiler in a contested vote. In 1992 Ross Perot garnered almost 19 percent of the popular vote, helping to send George H. Bush into retirement and giving Bill Clinton the White House. In 2000 Ralph Nader’s name on the Florida ballot distracted enough Democratic votes away from Al Gore to give George W.Bush the Presidency.

So given these strange outcomes, is the following proposition that far fetched? In a highly unusual year what is the possibility that Discreet Cat, after an almost freakish performance in the Cigar Mile could actually get a few votes for champion three-year old and possibly deny Bernardini the Eclipse. Ironically this scenario would have votes for Godolphin cancelling out votes for Darley.

The third party effect can be seen in the latest poll for the three-year old championship on the National Museum of Racing site. Barbaro leads by six points over Bernardini with 6 percent going to “other”.

    Could "other" be Discreet Cat?.

When I posted the link to Horsephotos.com, I mistakenly said there were only two pages of photos. There are photos on five pages, that I counted. Since everyone may not go to the end, I thought I would at least post this incredible shot of SHOWING UP:

    SHOWING UP FLYING

It is easy to see how he can fly by horses with "normal" strides...

(Ok, now back to work for the "other" Shelley!)

    Hello All
Mary from TX., is on her way home tonight. We had a lovely visit with her. But it made me think. That Barbaro has created an amazing world. We have now met about 100 of you in person & hundreds more online & via the phone. The experiences will last a life time. Thank you all for touching our lives.
Alex & Tim thank you for allowing us this opportunity.
Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Thank you & the gracious staff of NBC for sharing with us.
Please keep Erin & Annie’s family in your prayers. Also a girl named Gracie at NBC, And Harry J.

I find it hilarious that SI refers to Dr. Richardson as "genially grouchy." That sounds like what my mother calls a "left-handed compliment!"
For Sportsman of the Year, I agree totally with the comment after Barbaro's article - it should go to TEAM BARBARO - the Big Boss Horse himself, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado & Doc!

Sleep tight, big boy, and dream beautiful healing dreams of all of us who love and pray for you - you are such a hero to us...the Triple Crown would have been wonderful, but what you have accomplished through "your people" makes the Triple Crown denied seem trivial. Love you, gorgeous!

Hiya, Bobbey! Splintless at last on the (R) hind, sweet prince? What amazing news. Before watching "Charlie Brown X-Mas" tonight, I boughtt you a special holiday card. It has the Grinch on it and says that you make my heart grow three times its size. And you certainly do! Have golden slumbers tonight and rise to seize the new day. Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

    #### To Nancy, Skyler, Sue W., Julie, & Linnie: "Charlie Brown X-Mas" rules! I love the way that the kids dance and how the stars twinkle in the sky. I remember watching it for the first time ever in 1965 when I was in the 5th grade. I laugh, cry, & yell every year.
Happy Birthday to Sally in Key West!
A belated birthday to D'Anne, Joan Roya, & Leigh.
Great news from Susan E., Steve, & Therese about Felix, BDude, BDudette, & Zeke! I love the visuals of Felix chowing down on "Fancy Feast" (hopefully served in a crystal goblet, as on TV).
To Joyce M.: Please accept virtual hugs from your fellow citizens of The Barbaro Nation. I am so sorry that Alexis is having problems right now. Please hang in there, Joyce!
To Designgirl7: So glad to see you back again. I'd asked about you several nights ago. You've been missed.
I hope that Linda, H., Mary L, Dora Crow, & Martita are doing well tonight.
To Barb M.: I am sorry about Nala's cancer. I hope that your horse's condition stabilizes soon.

    Bonnie,

You've got it - ! I always had a special fondness for Seabiscuit and his Bay area roots here, so he is a permanent part of my memory banks. I haven't heard this from anyone else, but Showing Up appears much more laid back than Barbaro ever appeared to me, and looks like a very unassuming horse who explodes when faced with ultimate competition. I wonder what Barclay Tagg saw when he first took a look at him. I've never heard one word of Showing Up acting up or being "fragile" as someone termed George Washington, and that also reminds me of Seabiscuit who just took the train...

    And the LOOK ... !

Well, Russell Baze didn't get the record today, still needs three wins to pass Lafitte.

He was interviewed today at the races, and he was so funny and self-deprecating. He was asked about his longeviety, and he said it was due to being lucky enough to never land in such a way that it prevented him from getting back on the job. Asked what he would do after he breaks the record, he said he guessed he would be back the next day on the next horse... and he just wished he would hurry up and do it so everyone could get on with their lives! Of course, he has Lafitte there waiting, plus crews from HRTV, TVC, local TV and press crews, etc.

    Such a nice guy.

That reminds me - the pictures of a smiling, happy Edgar Prado on Price Tag was well worth finding on the horsephotos.com site, after seeing his agonized concerned face in several races we remember...

Yes, Shelley, maybe it's the way he runs or the look on his face. Curious! You know Seabiscuit made his home not too far from me, outside Ukiah. It's interesting that they choose such an out of the way place, especially for the 1940's! Nice country, the family must have really liked the remoteness of it.

To Susan E.: Hope I'm doing this right. I've been reading some of the posts on Felix. I was wondering, how old is he? My first cat lived to be 20 years old. I have two more now a male 3 and a female four. They are just the cutest and funny as all heck. I don't have any children so they along with my five birds and of course my horses are my babies. I love them all to pieces and would do anything for them.

I don't know what is wrong with Felix but I will say a prayer for you that whatever it is that is wrong with him, he'll be okay.

    Take care, Lorraine

    Posted by: lorraine S. Staten Island,NY at November 29, 2006 3:48 AM

It is actually very beautiful country around Ukiah where Seabiscuit is buried. I have a friend who has been building a new house near there for the last five years, and I have grown to love the beautiful yellow hills dotted with oak trees, wild flowers and yes, ticks and poison oak! It's not quite as wet as you are further north, so the vegetation is much more open. I understood when I read where they had buried Seabiscuit, I could almost feel the soft air and golden light under the oak tree.

Barbaro, you are the champion heart. Small steps big guy. No more splint and holding your own; steady and balanced in stride, "excellent" from Dr. R. who is always so cautious. You are our miracle. Can't help wondering where you would be now in your recovery if the dreaded "L" didn't occur. Keep growing that hoof wall, rest, grow strong beautiful boy. Today I am doing a happy dance because by all reports you are growing stronger with each day. Snuggle in your straw and look forward to tomorrow's visits, grooming, hand-picked grasses and treats from those who love you. Butterfly kisses from Bella, Gracie and me.

Shelley, Any idea where the name Smokey Stover came from? I have a whole story about the name Stover that's very funny!

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at November 29, 2006 4:21 AM

    Hi, Robbie -

Yes, few days I get like this! I think the racing seems frivolous and distracting from the real mission here this week - with regard to horse slaughter, the fight is so much more serious and life threatening, in much higher numbers of risk. Talking to senators' offices is seeing your politicians at work, and the frustration level cannot be allowed rise too high or it is self-defeating. Now we know how the high priced lobbyists found their value... I did miss talking to Katie.

So on a day when it is possible to sit and telephone, sit and fax or email, the horse racing is just a connection to the one and only Barbaro... his world.

Rarely do I have the opportunity to do other than read late at night, and it was fulfilling/frustrating. Joyous to connect with the Jacksons, and with Harry Aleo, and then there is TB Friends, on the other end of the spectrum. Light and dark, as martita says.

Hope you're doing very well, too - posted Richard's site again for people to see Vicarino and Quite a Rush... thank him again for us.

    Bonnie,

I don't know where Smokey Stover got his name, although the "Smokey" part is self-evident. Maybe we should hear the "Stover" story...

Another of Harry's horses, Brite n'Happy, has a very understandable name, from High Brite out of Happy Love - but just don't know about Smokey.

    I'm all ears ...

I was just on the net looking up "smokey stove". It appears there was a cartoon character named that, so that could have been where he got it. I'd have to look at Smokey's pedigree to see if there's a connection there. He sure is beautiful!

Just an old family story that made me think twice when I saw the name "Stover". My Dad had racehorses, non of them were named Stover, but all the cats at the barn were named Stover. In other words all cats to him were a stover, as if it was another word for cat. I can't ask him where he got that as he has passed on. As a kid when I got a cat, my Dad would always call it Stover, even if I had another name for it. I don't know what the word signifies, I'll try looking it up. It may have had something to do with a cat in his childhood.......?

Thanks Shelley for all you hard work on HS1915. I am still calling, although we're suppose to call our senators it seems to be a moot point to call Boxer and Feinstein but I still do and they are better at fielding calls it seems that some other offices. For the most part I am glad we have them as our Calif. Senators.

    Bonnie,

After googling Smokey Stover, I remembered that it was an old comic strip, and googling took me right to a page extolling the virtues of the screwball comedy which is no more. Considering the strip was in the media from 1935 and knowing Harry's age, I would suspect the name of the horse is partially for his color and partially for the past enjoyment of that character...

It certainly makes sense to me. And yes, he is a beautiful horse who immediately draws your eye - interestingly enough, though, he looks like a softy with that gentle eye. Vicarino, on the other hand, looks like a giant killer with one thing in mind - !

    Shelley -
I just told Richard that you posted his site again - and said thanks again.
Also told him of the current campaign regarding the anti horse slaughtering bill. He had a good idea:
That the owners of race horses (that are "discarding" their horses)
be held financially responsible for the horses they want to discard by funding the retirement ranches which they can then use as a charital deduction. That way it is a Win-Win situation.

It's a great idea! Perhaps you might want to draft a letter to our Senators introducing the idea. It would probably have to be a state related issue. Or write to the organization for retired thoroughbreds and research it, don't know the exact name of it but Shelley may.

BARBARO-Special goodnight to you Big Ole Boy! Stay warm and safe in your stall. Have wonderful dreams. I am so elated to hear of you only wearing a bandage now on your pre-broke leg! It will be so soon you will forget all about your little hoof growing back, it will be here in no time. You have come so far, and still have hurdles to jump (oops-get over) You can do it. You are a strong Big Ole Boy!

Robyn Hoffman-I appreciate your asking about me. My cousin has had another stroke, and we are unsure of what the outcome will be now that he has had two in less than 72 hrs. He was on the way to have more tests ran when 2nd one hit him.

On a more positive note, I have learned that most, NOT ALL, of my hospital bill, MRI bills, CT scan bills, Dr. bills, have been lowered thru the hospital's Indigence Fund. Thank goodness, it is such a weight off my mind, but they still want some beaucoup dollars, just not as much as previously billed. Thanks for your advice on that subject.

PRAYERS TO ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, FOR I LOVE YOU GREATLY-ONE AND ALL. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES.

What a wonderful article!! I truly laughed out loud when I read about Ogar's cud being poison ivy. Meanwhile, Dr. Richardson and the rest of the team caring for Barbaro, starting with Barbaro himself and the Jacksons on down to those who clean Barbaro's stall deserve to be nominated "Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the Year" for 2006. Enough with spoiled, rich, crybaby human athletes!
