Barbaro Updates: 146

updates are now here.

Update 1123: It was nice to watch the winners' circle celebrations for Russell Baze on HRTV (not sure what they thought of Russell's headware). Both Greg Gilchrist and Harry Aleo were present for the celebrations. It just seems that everyone thinks very highly of Russell, a good person and a family person. As Tom Chapman put it "9531 and counting". Very cool.

Update 1122: Congratulations to Russell Baze, winning the fourth at Bay Meadows with an inspired "wait and wait and up the rail" ride on Butterfly Belle.

Update 1121: Russell Baze is currently 0 for 2 on the day, to break Pincay's record he needs one win. Follow Russell's progress here.

Barbaro is getting coverage in Jamaica. I also think this article was in a China paper. If anyone has the link, please post in the comments.

Update 1120: I just called Mrs. Jackson and Barbaro had another comfortable night (thursday night).

This morning was a little dreary (but warm), but it does seem the rain is now really starting to move in. Tim has a runner this afternoon at Laurel (Gatornation) so hopefully the weather is not too aweful. I rode a couple of horses on the new synthetic track this morning (Tapeta). It just simply feels good underneath you, and it is very consistent. It seems everyone's feedback remains positive, although a few have decided to wait to provide a more concrete verdict when we get some cold weather. Anyway, so far so good for sure. Michael Dickinson was again at Fair Hill to observe and get direct feedback.

Yesterday I mentioned that horsehats had a new Barbaro hat (update 1115): Barbaro Fund Hat. I noted the hats were limited edition, here is more detail (comment from superfecta 2:56pm):

In case you were wondering about the Barbaro hats, they are making 400 and we've already reserved 50 of them here at work, so ordering sooner rather than later is the way forward.

Keep up the good work!

Update 1119: The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase, to be run next sunday, December 10, is the final big global race we will follow. Among the runners are the globe trotting Ouija Board, third most recently in Japan, and (also the globe trotting) Collier Hill, who most recently won the Canadian International under regular jockey Dean McKeown. Ouija Board arrived in Hong Kong shortly after her third place in the Japan Cup, Collier Hill arrived this morning. I called Dean McKeown to catch up quickly on Collier Hill. He said he has been training well. Dean will actually arrive in Hong Kong on tuesday to help with the final preparations of Collier Hill, and assuming I can connect to his cell phone, will provide us some updates. Dean did mention that these two met in Dubai early in the year. Collier Hill beat Ouija Board in that race. Dean noted that Fallon came in for some criticism for his ride (Fallon won the Hong Kong Vase on Ouija Board last year) but Dean thought it was more to do with it being very early in the year for Ouija Board. Clearly we are now at the end of the season, and of the two, Collier Hill will be the fresher. It should be a great race. More information and updates on the race to follow.

I caught up with Barclay Tagg. Both Showing Up and NoBiz are now relaxing in Florida after their tremendous weekend exploits. They won't be running for a little while so will be kept ticking over under light exercise. Stormy Kiss, Jackson's runner tomorrow is ready, and as I called was being visited by the acupuncture lady.

No Barbaro update yet, but will endevour to get one later.

Update 1118: Russell Baze tied Laffitt Pincay's record yesterday: Baze Ties Pincay's All-Time Win Record! and here is the card for today. He has seven mounts including some favourites.

Fair Hill has Xchanger in today in a million dollar race: Officer Rocket, Xchanger to meet in $1-million Delta Jackpot.

It seems a bit dreary out this morning (although warm). I am guessing the weather will mean riding on the new Tapeta surface! The Barbaro update will be later this morning.

Cheryl, great job on video. We have got to work hard to save these horses from slaughter. I'm so tired of foreign own company coming here and taking what is ours. Greed that is all it is. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr On a lighter note Barbaro have a wonderful day sweetie. I hope you can get out today. Grow Hoof Grow. Have a wonderful day ---- Marilyn/ohio

Alex-

Your decision is understandable... thanks for all the time and energy you've spent keeping us informed about Barbaro, who we all care so much about.

Apologies for the actions of a few
(you know who you are) who have spoiled this for everyone else and I hope you enjoy the peace of mind and freedom that not having to monitor the comments and forum areas (like a kindergarden teacher) will bring.

Please know that the vast majority of people who come to this site do appreciate and respect all of your efforts.

Cheers -
Christian

Morning FOB's
I appreciate having this website to keep informed. I laugh at the acronyms that have developed from this website, FOB, ACN, NBC. I now use GHG (grow hoof grow)

Wishing lot of comfy nights for sweet boy and lots of hoof growth.

Thanks to all

NANCY, we love him and want to kiss his nose because he represents every good value there is in life with none of the bad mixed in, as we've all had to learn to tolerate in others.

Add the fact of his achievements, his purpose in his life - to WIN, his innocence in doing exactly what he was meant to do, and his exquisite appearance...

Peace to everyone.

Good Friday morning Alex, Bobby and fellow fans

congratulations to Russell Baze!!

Martita,
Your wonderful posts are always uplifting to read and I have enjoyed every single line of every single one.

But today the uplift won't last too long as I realize there is a clock ticking right now that is counting the time to shutdown. I think of that with a heavy heart. There are so many people I have grown to love and admire and appreciate.

However, the most pressing issue is the shutdown of the slaughterhouses and I will continue the fight anywhere for as long as it takes to get the job done. I've already left messages for the Senators and then after work will call them all again and speak to the aides. It's is a daily ritual.

TGIF - everyone. Have a great one.

Good morning, our ray of sunshine, Mr. Barbaro

We are always happy to hear nothing but good reports and your strong will...YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A WINNER!!!!

We graciously thank Mr. and Mrs. Jackson for their big hearts...

We thank Dr. R, NBC, Alex, Tim and Numerous Others...

I thought about this last night...I was so restless.

Today is December 1st...TWO WEEKS...For us to make a DIFFERENCE!!!!

On the thread it mention the slaughterhouses are killing 3,000 horses a week, that is 12,000 or more a month...

You know if they have speed up the process those horses are been brutal..I MEAN BRUTAL...probably not even stunned before they face slaying...

FOLKS...This is a wake up call...WE HAVE TO DO THIS...

Please call, fax, email, whatever it takes...

I called Texas to Sen. Hutchinson's office yesterday, and they said they WERE NOT getting many calls.

FANS OF BARBARO...WE ARE HERE BECAUSE OF HIM...

WE ARE HERE TO SAVE HORSES...THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS...PASS THIS BILL, TODAY!!!!!

Whatever comes your way, turn the other cheek and focus on that 12,000 horses who has already lost their lives...

WE NEED EVERYONE OF YOU...WE ARE IN THIS TO THE FINISH...

God Bless!!!!

Martita, I came to look for your words this morning. I was not disappointed. You are so right. We have lost, we all know that, but we have gained so much as well. We must make a promise to use this knowledge well. If we have a second chance somewhere else then we must not look back, rather ahead, and focus on our champion heart, Barbaro, and the battle he faces daily. We must use our knowledge and not give up the battle to right the wrongs of horse slaughter. We owe it to Barbaro.

Good morning dear Barbaro. The weather is changing here and soon will be heading your way. I hope you get to graze a little or at least enjoy your Lael grass and the company of your wonderful owners. Stand straight, stay balanced and do your PT. Obey the Doc's orders and grow hoof grow. Butterfly kisses big fella.

Alex, I am sorry it is a gloomy day at Fair Hill. Reminds me of the words of Shakespeare, "The sun for sorrow will not show its head." We are all a bit gloomy today sorry to say.

With all the rain coming, thank goodness for the new tapeta track.

Phone, fax and email. Monday is only a weekend away.

Good Morning Big Guy! Will miss sending u a morning greeting on this site but I'm sure u will know that so much love is coming ur way and prayers for your continued healing . I hope you get out before the storm arrives. They say it is going to be a wopper. Are you enjoying your new stall? My guess there will be more room to spend your day. I'm sure you will have a visit from Mrs. Jackson with your fresh picked grass. Many hugs and smooches on your beautiful nose and many healing happy days ahead Big Guy.

Alex, I am not as good with words as some of the other posters, but know how much I appreciate all you have done for the Barbaro fans and for horse fans all over. It surely has been a great deal of work and I apologize for my post late last night that was not appropriate in that it became meanspirited toward Renee. I'm sure it is these kind of postings that have been quite frustrating and discouraging to you. But I hope you know there are so many people who appreciate the updates on our favorite and beloved horse.

Thank you to all of Barbaro's care givers in the Medical sense at Bolton Center especially Dr. R.

A huge thank you to the Jacksons. What love and care you have given this beautiful champion and most of all the chance to live and to heal. I'm sure you continue to grow in admiration of this magnificant horse and to admire and love .
him even more than any of us ever could

Thank you to Barbaro's special buddies Michael, Peter and Edgar. Edgar you surely saved Barbaro's life on the track that day and Michael your love for our forever Champ is so evident and your class through all of this has been nothing but admirable. Peter your care, brushing, changing bandages, visits, time, etc. are I'm sure one of the things that has made Barbaro,s days better.

There is such a warm and loving community that has gathered to support Barbaro and all the horses that need care.

Let's make sure that we keep those phones ringing in Washington all day,on Monday, endlessly, to support S.1915. Together we DO make a difference.

Good Morning Family
I'm reposting. Don't forget our collaboration with Eddie Kilroy for Willie's Place/Fans Of Barbaro Call In Day on Monday.

HOT FLASH....OOPPPSSS I MEAN NEWS FLASH.... LOL
I've exchanged emails with Eddie Kilroy about a collaborative effort scheduled for Monday 12/4, the day the Senators return. I've asked him to rally his pro S1915 listeners over the next few days and we'll have our own Nat'l Call In Day. Of course, for us every day is a call in day but if we can increase the numbers Monday it will remind the Senators that we have not forgotten the mission. The strategy remains the same unless otherwise directed by Shelley & Debra. I told Eddie I would provide names & numbers of our targeted Senators. SO PLEASE TREAT MONDAY AS A DAY TO CALL IN DEBTS, BEG, PLEAD, TRADE FAVORS, whatever it takes so we can tally some really big numbers.
Thanks for your help.

Lord God, wrap S1915 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. Compel each member to immediately move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all. Thank you God for Your mighty Presence in the passing of S1915.

First to Renee,
You have been one of the worst offenders on this site and have single handedly provoked the unacceptable chatter on this site. And the worst part of this is you just don't get it. You need some MAJOR help because "being yourself" just doesn't cut it with most people. I have refrained from making any derogatory comments against any individuals on the site because I was so offended myself by your comment when I first posted on the site. I'm sure you will find my comments offensive but I will not have knowledge of your response since this is the last time I will be posting on this site. You have been a slap in Alex's face throughout this all especially over the past few weeks. You have destroyed the vision he had for this site and has worked so hard to maintain. One might say that by expressing my feelings here I am no better than you and your offensive writings however it is something I felt I must do and needed to be expressed under the circumstances

##################
Phyllis,
This is disgusting and very hurtful. Take a good look at yourself.Attacking people is a bad characteristic, are you proud of yourself? I never used any foul language or posted something I was afraid to have people see,I had fun with others here. If I did I was wrong. Others have posted worse than me...but who cares! We work hard, and have fun, due to some stuffed shirts we can't do that. I love Barbaro with all my heat,I am sick and tired of being targated by mean spirited heartless troublemaking individuals, who only come on to start trouble, like this. If I had caused trouble Alex would have removed me from the board like he did others. I will not participate or stoop to the low level some come from here. This is what causes trouble anywhere, it makes people defensive and arguments break out. I know where the trouble is coming from. Shame on all of you.I have meet some very special people here an will continue to talk with them. I really don't know if I am able to forgive you, you have me in tears and have hurt me deeply.

Here is my challenge to the FOB...If I have caused trouble and offended you as certain people have stated, just say it and I will leave. I belong to another forum and have never been treated so harshly. I am myself, a person a being. I don't know how to be anyone else and don't want to be.

Good Morning Barbaro and all FOBs!

Alex, thanks again for the update and for all of the hard work you do for us. You have been a most gracious host, an extremely knowledgeable guide and an tireless source of friendship and good will to all of us. We came here seeking information and answers about Barbaro and his wonderful progress and you provided that to us - but you gave us so much more as well. We have all gained education and insight into many different facets of horses and horse racing thanks to you. The articles you provided to us, the answers you always gave us and your endless patience has changed us. We will leave here knowing more about Barbaro, horses, racing, track conditions, current and world events regarding horses and even politics because of you. You also gave us the priceless opportunity to befriend others who, like us, are completely in love with Barbaro. We came here as strangers. We talked together, learned together, prayed together, cried together and found consolation together because of you. We have joined together as one powerful group to fight for the freedom of all American horses because of your work and the passion you've inspired in all of us. Your incredible generosity is greatly appreciated and hopefully we're all better people for having had this opportunity.

Thank you Alex, for being such a wonderful friend to us all. It's been a real pleasure.

Good morning FOB, Barbaro's misstep at Pimlico may have been an accident, but bringing this group together was not. The Friends of Barbaro helped create the miracles we have seen these last months. In any community there will be those who focus on the bigger picture, and those who focus on themselves.

My wish is that these next two weeks stay focused on the bigger picture, Barbaro's journey to health, the passing of S 1915, following news in the racing industry, and finding a way we can stay connected on another board when this miraculous chapter ends.

Alex, heartfelt thanks for all you've done for Barbaro, for racing, and for the people who care. Truly, I will miss the positive postings that seemed to add something to the news. All in all, this experiment in an unmoderated board has to be called a rousing success and proof positive that the internet can be used for the common good. I wish you all the best in your good work and look forward to the day you post "Barbaro is going home."

God bless all, Susan in Saratoga

POSTED BY SHELLEY A
IMPORTANT NEWS......

As you all know, Congressman Whitfield was instrumental in getting HR503 passed in the House. I just spoke to his office and was assured that he is seeing this through and is still involved in the "negotiations" with the senate.

I was told that the list we have been given (reposted by Socorro at 8:47) is the list that we must stick to.....that they are the ONLY people, at this time, that can make this happen.

I was advised not to expand this list but to stick with it and keep calling.

There were some questions earlier about who we should be calling. I hope this addresses those concerns.

I was also assured that I would be notified if there should be any additions or changes to this strategy.

Alex, thank you so much for all you have done. You've opened a whole new world for me and I'm so sad that it has come to this. Is there a way to keep this open to items already posted but block new posts? There is so much valuable info.

To those that caused this by using this site for their personal communications with their incessant banter and inappropriate comments, I hope you're happy that you've ruined it for all of us that come here for information. Instead of blocking you from posting, Alex opened a chat room so you could chit chat and yet, you still continued to post on the main site and aggravate everyone looking for updates on important issues. That was a wonderful way to show your gratitude to Alex and the regulars to this site. As your last hurrah, an apology for getting this site shut down, would be nice.

I wish you all well and thank you for the eye opening information you've provided. I'm proud to have been a part of this phenomenal group and the good we have done. I'm thankful for the opportunity to electronically meet so many wonderful people.

If you'd like to stay in touch, please email me @ stumpstwr@earthlink.net. Ignore the message from earthlink - I'll get your message.

Thanks Alex & everyone. It's been a slice.

It would be so nice if in the two weeks left this site would be a tribute to the Jackson's and what they have done to keep Barbaro with us. They are the bottom line in all of this. They own Barbaro and they decided he would get all of the care possible. Because of them we have him too.

Vicki-I have apologized on this main board, and on three different threads of the forum. I understand that I am considered partially to blame for chit-chat. I feel horribly guilty, sick and sad. I own my role in this play. Everytime I sign on, I get to be blamed with more posts, oh not by name, mind you, but I still feel just as guilty. I still feel just as singled out, as if you or anyone else called me by name. I am sorry. I am sorry. If I could rectify this situation I would, but alas, I cannot. Alex, thanks for all your work, both as a source of information and as a host. This is the first site I check in the morning, and often the last I check at night. I haven't posted more than a few times, and don't always read all the comments (sorry, folks...one of those schedules, no disrespect intended) but it's been a great place to learn about many things, including other peoples' feelings and opinions.

I've called and written my Senators more than once, each, and will try calling them again Monday, but they're rigidly entrenched in their industry-taught views. (Guess they think I'm rigidly entrenched in my "animal-lover" views.) I don't expect either of them to budge a millimeter.

Good morning, FOBs!

So sorry to hear that the posts will be closed down. Understandable, but I’ll miss the chance to exchange ideas with all of you. Thanks to Cheryl’s reminder this morning, I printed off the HSUS flyers. I fly to Vegas for a convention tomorrow and remembered that the NFR is this week, so if even a handful of horse lovers see them and take action, it will be worth it. Ditto for the folks that visit Red Rock Canyon outside Vegas and enjoy the wild horses and burros! I’ll be posting one at the Visitor’s Center there on Sunday.

A week ago, it was “Black Friday” the BIG one for retailers, and it really got me thinking. I look around my house and see all the clothes I don’t wear, the CDs and DVDs I rarely play, the books I haven’t read. . .raise your hand if this sounds like you! Reminds me of a quote I once saw: “I buy things I don’t need with money I don’t have to impress people I don’t like!” If each of those hundreds of thousands of folks around the country who headed out for all the “deals” on stuff nobody really needs each gave a dollar, five dollars, ten dollars to a horse rescue, humane society or homeless shelter, the effect would be mind-boggling! We wouldn’t need to worry about “unwanted horses”. The generosity of folks who visit this site is just incredible, so I’m asking each of you to keep carrying on The Barbaro Effect in this season of BELIEVING and “pay it forward”.

Just a few ideas:
-For your friends and family who would appreciate it, sponsor an animal from Best Friends or your favorite shelter or donate to a horse rescue in their name. (For those who wouldn’t appreciate it, spend a few bucks less on their gift and donate the rest!!)
-Ask friends and family to do the same for YOU, instead of buying more stuff you don’t need.
-Make sure NO ONE you know buys a puppy/kitten for a Christmas gift! Instead, ask them to wait a few months and then head to their local shelter to adopt an animal that someone else got for the holiday and has already abandoned.
-For every card you send/receive, toss a dollar into a jar to donate to your favorite horse rescue. Or make another call to your Senators!
-Ask your employer to hold a food drive for a day for the homeless shelters AND animal shelters in your city.
-While you're watching TV, knit or crochet a bunch of scarves and donate them.
-Send a card with something tucked inside to help out Mike Rea and Erin Brennan and brighten their day!
-Goodies for the NBC staff, the donor horses and the BIG BOSS HORSE!

My favorite police horse, Chocolate Chip, always wore a Santa Claus hat this time of year when he was on patrol, and I picture Barbaro doing the same, spreading all the good things he stands for. Now wouldn't THAT make a great card? (Chip, by the way, was retired with honors and now lives on the farm of the officer who was his partner. A well-deserved retirement that ALL police horses should have.)

Blessings to you all and keep BELIEVING.
Strength and sunshine and nothing but love to my buddy, Barbaro.

I just got the WORST response letter I've ever gotten from a Senator. I don't want to list the individual's name, but it was such a ridiculous response I HAD to share! The letter starts out by thanking me for writing and being interested in political issues. It continues with the "I've supported this and that and worked really hard on that . . . blah, blah, blah". Then, it closes by telling me that "the bill I'm interested in is being addressed at the Federal level, and I should make contact at that level."

Help me out here guys. Could it even be possible that this Senator really does not know anything about this legislation? I want to contact his office by phone, but at this point, I'm not sure what exactly to say. Was this senator just giving vague answers perhaps? Didn't want to get involved in discussing this particular bill? If that's the case, why respond at all? I've gotten so many positive, upbeat responses from all of the other offices I've written and emailed and faxed, but nothing like this.

Advice?

Good morning all:
Here's a suggestion, just a suggestion! Those of you who are intent on bickering, apologizing, whining, etc. exchange e-mail addresses and take your fight to the luxury of privacy. Set up a temporary e-mail address for safety reasons if you must. But keep your personal stuff off this site. No more! There are wonderful, hard working people here who honestly care about horse slaughter, S.1915 and other horse issues. Your "stuff" drags us in it's wake. I'm an example. I should not be posting this. I should be talking about strategy for the next two weeks. So here's my final say which includes a challenge. Keep your stuff off this board because what you are doing is total disrespect for everyone. Stopping horse slaughter is very dear to Mrs. Jackson's heart. Let's see if you have any respect for her at all. If you do, your stuff is off this board and we will applaud you. But also stay here for S.1915. You are needed. We all are. But we only need team members with the focus on safety for America's equine.

HI to all,

So sorry to hear about the upcoming shut down.

In an effort to simplify finding email addresses, I have set up a discussion under Help/Site Issues called Email Address Directory.

This wasn't set up to be another discussion, just a directory of names and addresses.

Designgirl:
Post the senators name. Then call back. Ask the person who answers the phone if the senator has a specific aide assigned to S.1915! If so, get transferred and talk to that person. If you get a VM tell him/her to call you back. Now here's the key. Ask if the senator (or the aide) if he/she has any specific concerns. If they say yes, find out what they are, answer to the best of your ability then post the highlights on this board. Then we can all call. If the senator does not have someone specifically assigned to S.1915 talk to the person who answered the phone! Find out how much he/she knows. Post that info here. That's the process I used with Sen. Dayton's (Mn) aide. He had a few concerns, I addressed them, he seemed pleased, I know he was actually. Not that what I did made a difference, but Sen. Dayton is a co-sponsor and will be listed as such Monday. Anything helps. And keep calling the senators on the list being posted here. Debra and Socorro are right on!

RIGHT NOW THINGS ARE NOT LOOKING SO GREAT....WE NEED EVERYONE'S HELP REGARDLESS OF THE PERSONAL FEELINGS ON THE BOARD. T

HIS IS NOT ABOUT US....IT'S ABOUT THE HORSES THAT WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE.

IT'S TIME TO DIG OUR HEELS IN AND STAY FOCUSED ON THE ISSUE AT HAND IF WE HAVE ANY CHANCE OF WINNING THIS BATTLE!!!

I'M CONFIDENT THAT YOU WILL ALL PUT ASIDE YOUR DIFFERENCES AND WORK FOR THE GREATER GOOD!!

Many have asked how I am enjoying CA and I get sidetracked, sorry.

CA has had the most beautiful mornings and days I have seen in over 25 yrs. Wake up to a sunny day and able to see downtown Los Angeles from over 22 miles away, that is how clear it was for a few days.

If it were not for the millions of vehicles and buildings, you would think it was paradise. Beautiful mountains and hills, clear blue skies, cool weather during the day, and gorgeous sunsets.

If you guys need to relax, come back here and picture yourself as if you are here in CA, minus the millions of homes, buildings, and automobiles.

Cheryl Jones - because of you I have learned Barbarospeak.

Laurie H. - because of you I see Barbaro tucked in at night with angels at his side.

Mary S. - because of you I hear the eloquence of prayer.

Martita - because of you I have rekindled my imagination and find beauty and possibility in all things.

Mike - because of you I envision the race of a lifetime for a big bay colt with a wonderful ending yet to be written.

Daryl, Shelly A. and all who work tirelessly for S1915 - because of you I have found a voice to speak that which needs to be spoken.

To all who have organized fundraisers, rescues and gifts - because of you I have received more than I could ever give.

Because of all of you I know the weather across the nation without the Weather Channel. I have learned to make bourbon balls, care for sick pets and relocate mice. I have obtained invaluable information about horses and racing. And I have learned about all of you, and I know that I am not alone.

Kennett Florist - because of you I have been involved with the most appreciative people in the world.

Dr. Richardson and NBC staff - because of you I have seen an unparalleled dedication and an unbridled joy at the smallest of steps.

Mr. & Mrs. Jackson - because of you I have seen the personal side of Barbaro's owners and the unmatched love you have for him.

Alex - because of you and Michael and Tim and Peter - I have been allowed into Barbaro's life, to see in my mind's eye his personality, determination and courage.

Barbaro - because of you I have found a brighter light, a higher purpose and another world. I have had it all. All because of you.

God bless you all.

I have been off this board for days. I've only skimmed today - so I am sorry if I am missing something important, but I had to say this. Please let the people that say they are leaving -please let them leave.

Stay focused on S1915 - when you make the calls SEE the senators listening, see them being moved to do the right thing, see this bill being passed - expect the best to happen. Our collective consciouness can bring about wonders -don't use your resources on the junk that can appear on this board. You can't do your best work focused on people causing such upset - let it go - in the name of BARBARO - let it go - for yourselves, and for the hightest good of this board.

But I know all about cliques on message boards, and they are alive and kicking with what is known as 'girl gangs' ... just a bunch of women who bully their way around a message board

Girl gangs or cliques are formed out of insecurity and ego trips ... a need for power and control, and when they see that slipping away, they resort to name-calling, attacks and a desire to preserve their enclave at all costs. Heaven forbid anyone who goes against them and you will then see the whole entourage come out in full force in defense of "their" leader, whoever that may be; sometimes it's more than one person, but if you watch long enough you will see who belongs to these cliques; it becomes very apparent after awhile.

SHAME ON ALL OF YOU.

WE ARE HOME.

The trip was very scary, but the nurse and Continental Airlines did everything possible to make my dad's trip as safe as possible. There are so many kind people. Total strangers came up to us on the plane to pray and offer their support.

My emotions have been a jumble. One thing I can count on: everytime I checked here I would cry tears of comfort and support. My family is very close and my dad has always been our rock.

All of you have sustained me and you are angels that sent hugs accross a big ocean. Here comes the mush: I love you ALL for doing it..... and my family members share that feeling. It felt like we had a village of Americans around us praying and hugging us.

My dad is in the hospital and still very ill, but the fact that he is still with us and back in his home country is a miracle. He told us that he did not want die away from "his America". Whatever happens now is a blessing. Dad got his wish.

To all who have gone through the same or going through it now: I pray that you will receive the same compassion we did.......and thank you for your words of wisdom.

The Barbaro effect has now blessed my family. I have no words to thank my FOB family. Just know that when we lost hope we would read your messages. God bless you all.

Subject: [NHPC eAlert] Letter from Willie Nelson- Please Cross Post

Dear Friends,

Following passage in the House of Representatives, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is pending in the Senate. As you know, the measure would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international transport of live horses or horseflesh for the same purpose. Efforts from concerned constituents like us have made all the difference in this fight - please continue to contact your Senators.

We hope the bill will be voted on by the Senate when Congress reconvenes on December 5th, but there will be limited time available and only issues seen as essential are expected to be addressed. We need to be sure Congress recognizes that this legislation is critical, as approximately 2,000 horses are being hauled to slaughter and brutally killed with every week this bill awaits action in the Senate.

Please contact both of your Senators today, urging their co-sponsorship of S. 1915, the Senate companion bill to H.R. 503, and requesting a vote on the legislation when they return on December 5th, which is their last chance to vote.

Thanks, Willie Nelson

P.S.

To find your Senators, go to: http://www.compassionindex.org/search.htm or call the Capitol Hill operator at (202) 224-3121 and request to be connected to their offices.

Hey Guys!

As we all know, all of our efforts to pass S1915 are culminating in these last days of 2006...

I WOULD LIKE TO ISSUE A CHALLENGE TO ALL FOBs to use the contact information on Socorro's/Debra in WI's list (2:47) and GET IN TOUCH WITH THESE SENATORS...

THIS IS SO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT...We have come so far and worked so hard. NO ONE HAS WORKED HARDER OR BEEN MORE FOCUSED THAN THE MEMBERS OF THIS BOARD. Each and every one of you have made it a point to see that this legislation is passed. That is something we all can be proud of.

So I am ISSUING THIS CHALLENGE...THAT WE SPEND EVERY LAST WANING BREATH OF THIS YEAR IN DOING ALL THAT WE CAN TO LET THEM KNOW WE ARE HERE AND WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL S1915 BECOMES THE LAW OF THE LAND.

EVERYONE OF YOU MATTERS...through each FAX, each EMAIL,each PHONE CALL...one step at a time... thus building a coalition of those who will not stop UNTIL THE SLAUGHTER ENDS...

LET US REDOUBLE OUR EFFORTS AND ANSWER THIS CHALLENGE TO DRIVE OUR POINT HOME...S1915 MUST PASS...

LET US NOT LOOK BACK AND WONDER IF WE LEFT OUT A SINGLE CALL OR FAX OR EMAIL...

WE CAN DO THIS!

Just called Coleman's office as you asked and the very soft spoken gal that answered told me that Senator Coleman just hasn't made his views known yet. She said she'd be glad to give him my message which was, "to please help to get S.1915 to the floor for a vote. Even if you're neutral on this issue, it deserves to be heard as hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake here. So please at the very least don't hold up this very important piece of legislature! Help to make sure it is at least attached to something else so we, the American people can at least have our say!She said yes Ma'am I'll certainly give him your message. And,. . . Thanks for Calling Senator Coleman, and he'll be glad to hear your views.

So,. . . I don't know if it's what you expected to hear, but I'll call again later if I haven't run outta minutes by then.

And hey all, Smile, it'll give your face something to do,

Hello dear friends,

I am sad beyond words that the comments and discussion will be shut down. For the first time in my life, I have other "horse people" to talk to. The overwhelming majority of people I've met through TWR are wonderful, caring, intelligent people. I don't know what I would have done not knowing about Barbaro and getting these daily updates, being able to ask my stupid questions, and being able to DO something to end horse slaughter.

Alex--I am so grateful to you for your hard work and time that you've spent keeping us informed. Words are ridiculously inadequate to express my thanks.

Barbaro--not since Secretariat have I been so totally head over heels nuts about a horse. So many have been so inspiring--but you---you are something else and a half.

I don't know what I'll do without all my FOBs. Without being able to say "hay, Barbaro". Without Mary S and her prayers. Cheryl and her wonderful postings. And so, so many of you that I've enjoyed chatting with. You will all stay in my prayers.

I will continue to work against horse slaughter. But I will truly miss being able to "bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."

Peace,

For Alex;

Thank you for your dedication to every detail in providing us with all kinds of information vis a vis Barbaro, horse racing in general and other related equine information.

I have enjoyed all the international articles that have been linked over the last six months.

I have learned a tremendous amount from you and from all of the "connections" that you have linked for us.

If this were a college course in equestrian life and issues, I doubt I could have gleaned any more!

You are so knowledgable, experienced and willing to impart what you know to all who are interested.
Thank you so much. I look forward to learning more from you amd the updates and links that you will continue to provide.

Sincerely,

Message from Mocha:
Good mooorning people:
Please keep working hard for Barbaro. Everytime I see him he is so upbeat. But he seemed a little sad yesterday. I asked what was wrong. He said his army of FOBs were dropping the ball, sad news took them away from helping his equine brothers and sisters. I said give them a little time. Emotions run deep in animal people like FOBs. They are genuinely sensitive. He agreed. So to really pick him up I took him to Dairy Queen! I bought him a Moolatte. They have a new one, I'm not making this up. It's called "MINT MOCHA!" Bobby cheered up and said to me I was the true Dairy Queen! Ah, a man, er, horse after my own heart! Bobby's all better. Now keep him that way and call, call, call!

Good morning Barbaro, I am glad that you had another comfortable night. I hope you were able to go outside this morning to graze. The weather will be better on Saturday and Sunday for you. So, have a nice weekend. Hopefully you can go outside and maybe see your friend Mocha. Too bad you're not here in southern California. It's sunny and warm. Keep getting better Champ and stay happy. Take care of your legs and listen to Dr. Dean and your nurses. Keep healing that left hind hoof and I will continue to pray for your full recovery. Love you much!!!

It's sad that the comments here will be shut down. We will not be able to send you messages, especially when the Barbaro's Message Board in the upenn website is not working, just like in the last two days. Anyway, I am glad that Alex will continue to post Barbaro?s updates in this site.

Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson for not giving up on Barbaro.

Thank you, Tim/Alex for the daily updates. I don't post messages here regularly, but I visit the website daily to check on Barbaro's condition. We greatly appreciate the updates.

Russell Baze ROCKS!! Hope today will be the day. He is such a gentleman, so humble and grounded. Looks like a great lineup for him too.

###

I'm so proud to be part of this group of people who are so committed to ending the despicable practice of horse slaughter, for enlightening so many who were unaware of the practice, and who have gathered legions of support and forletting our officials know that we are behind them in passing this measure. It is so good to know we ARE making a difference. Like the starfish thrower, but not for "just one" but for thousands.

Next week will be THAT WEEK. I feel it. I will devote every second I can to see that it happens, and am so proud to be in the company of so many who are equally committed, and those who are doing everything they can, when they can, even if it's just one call, one fax, one email, it will make a difference.

Prayer to all who need them, for safe tracks, for safe rides and for peace
Love to all

Thank you Lord for Alex, the Tim Woolley Racing, for Fair Hill, for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, for Michael and Peter, for Dr. Richardson and the staff at New Bolton and others too numerous to mention. I pray that you will continue to bless each of them and keep them safe. Father, I thank You that, out of all the stewards you could have picked to be the overseers of Bobby, that you selected Roy and Gretchen. We now see why. Thank You for healing Bobby, and for all the work You are doing through him. Thank you for all the people on this board, some of who lie in the background, for their love, devotion, and prayers. Bless each of them Heavenly Father and take care of all needs each may have.

Barbaro, so happy to hear you had another good night. I am so grateful that your mommy is calling Alex with daily reports for us now that Michael and Peter are heading south.

#####
Speaking of heading south, I sure wish I could! We got about 6 hours of freezing rain & sleet, followed by about 8 inches of snow. I am hibernating, but am in desperate need of - you guessed it - bread! I refused to be one of those silly "grocery raiders" the day before this mess came in, so now I am even sillier without my essentials. Thinking of having mini-sandwiches on crackers as a suitable alternative.

Bruno, my obnoxious mini-horse (choc. lab) ran outside full steam ahead after squeezing out the front door when he wasn't invited and promptly slid across the driveway and landed square on his rump. I thought he had hurt himself when he didn't move for a few seconds, but then realized he was unsure about what to do next. This is his first ice/snow event. His brother the more experienced pointer, stood in the front doorway peering out, almost as if to say "now, junior, what did you think would happen?" After gingerly sliding back inside, now he won't go back outside and I'm wondering how long he can go before an accident. Ugh.

There's over 500,000 people in our area without power, and I'm thinking about the animals and hoping they are ok with this frigid cold. I was kept up last night worrying about how to keep my fish tanks at an appropriate temperature if we lost power (I'm such a geek) and luckily, we are still on. If anyone else got him by this killer winter storm, please stay safe and be careful. It's a great day for drinking cocoa, calling Senators, and sending Xmas cheer to our animal and human friends!

Re the closing of some of this site, I think this represents a new beginning for the FOBs. Alex has taken on so much and now it's up to us to take the reigns. He will still give us our daily Barbaro news (thank you!) but we now must organize well, and quickly, to keep our group together and moving forward. Great things have been accomplished - and will continue to be accomplished. Keep the spirit strong!

Here's a picture of the world's smallest horse
Thumbelina.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/newley/266882408/

The World's Smallest Horse

Burleson Arabians is the proud owner of Black Beauty, the World's Smallest Horse as officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records in 2001. She held her title until 2007 when Thumbelina measured-in at only 17 inches tall.
Black Beauty is listed in Guinness World Records as the World's Smallest Horse from September 2001 until 2007.

Black Beauty was born June 6, 1996 as was an astonishing dwarf miniature horse from birth. Too small to nurse from her mother, her mother would lie down to feed her. At birth it was apparent that she was the world's smallest living horse and possibly the smallest horse in the world that ever lived. She was less than 12 inches tall at birth, weighing less than 10 pounds. She was small enough to fit into a coat pocket.

Black Beauty is exceptionally friendly and always knickers to say hello. She also likes to come into the house and enjoys watching television (Westerns are her favorite) and sharing popcorn. She also enjoys sitting in your lap and being rubbed.

To qualify as the world's smallest horse, Guinness Book of Records required that she be inspected by a Vet and be carefully measured for height by independent witnesses to confirm her status as the world's smallest horse.

Black Beauty is a dwarf miniature horse and at age five years-old currently measures on 18.5 inches tall (at her withers) and she was the world's smallest horse from 2001 to 2007, and the smallest horse in recorded history according to the Guinness Book of Records is now only 17 inches tall.

Standing just 17 inches tall, she is never going to be a champion show-jumper.

In fact, the tiny mare is so small she would struggle to leap over a bucket.

But such things are of little concern for feisty Thumbelina who has just been officially recognised as the world's smallest horse.

The five-year-old received the title from the Guinness Book of Records after her astonished owners realised she was never going to grow any bigger.

She was born on a farm in America to a couple who specialise in breeding miniature horses.

These popular show horses usually weigh about 250lb and reach a height of 34 inches when they are fully grown.

But when Thumbelina was born, it was immediately clear she would never grow to this size.

At birth she weighed 8lb - the weight of many new-born babies - and eventually she grew to a mere 60lb.

Thumbelina's extraordinary size has been put down to dwarfism, which makes her a miniature of a miniature.

But despite this massive difference in size, it is feisty Thumbelina who rules the roost over the stallions and racehorses on her 150-acre farm.

'When she was born, she was so small we thought she wasn't going to make it,' said Michael Goessling, whose parents Kay and Paul bred the miniature horses.

'She weighed eight pounds when she came out and she looked very ill. We feared the worst.

'Because her legs are proportionally smaller than her body and her head, she has to wear orthopaedic fittings to straighten them a lot of the time.

'But we love her and wouldn't want her any other way.'

At a mere 17 inches tall (four hands), the mare measures up to the shins of the 'normal' horses in the paddock.

The Goessling family have bred miniature horses for the past 15 years on Goessling's Goose Creek Farm in St Louis, and these usually stand at 34 inches at the withers - the ridge between the two shoulder blades.

But the owners of the mini horse began to realise they may have bred a record-breaker when she stopped growing after a year.

'My parents have bred hundreds of miniature horses, but we have never had one as small as Thumbelina,' Mr Goessling said.

'She was just a complete fluke and we call her a mini mini.

'When she was young she found the dog kennels and decided she wanted to bed-in with the dogs, rather than with bigger horses.

'She spends all her time playing with the spaniels, but we have to try and stop her grazing on grass, because she is not allowed to eat too much.'

Thumbelina survives on a cup of grain and handful of hay, served twice-a-day.

Normal horses lives for about 35 years, but she is only likely to live up to the age of 17 because of her size.

She has the ability to become pregnant and give birth to foals, but her owners have decided not to allow this to happen.

Mr Goessling, 39, said: 'There could be complications during the pregnancy, so we think it is better to avoid the risks.

'And although we love Thumbelina, we do not think it is right that the gene which creates dwarfism in horses is carried on through future generations.'

The tiny mare has become sometime of a celebrity in her home town in America, but Mr Goessling insists they will never sell her, no matter what price is offered.

'She is too precious to us to sell,' he added. 'I think my parents would sell me before they part with Thumbelina.

'She has that special Wow factor, which you only get when you physically see how small she really is.

Daryl,

No, but thanks so much for the offer to help. You don't need to though really! However the offer sure did touch me and it's sure appreciated!! I might've taken you up on it yesterday, as I was desperately wanting to call Senators! Could it be I'll have withdrawals from calling Senators after we get this bill passed?

Jim came in awhile ago with a new card for me to make my calls with. It's only a $5.00 card, this is why I said that, cuz he usually buys $20.00 cards for me. He shakes his head not understanding how important our phone calls are or how I can run out of minutes as fast as I do when I'm only on the phone for a couple of minutes usually per call.

Oh when I called Senator Coleman, "I did ask" to speak with the Aide who speaks for the S1915 bill. She said, I can take your call. She didn't tell me there was anybody else. I'm trying to think of topics to bring up that I've not already covered with all these Senators Aides already.

And, . . . Frist has had a lot of calls and many e-mails as well from me for one and I know many others are calling. Since he's retiring I don't think they care to take much note of our calls. I don't know what's up with that. But he wrote me a letter stating his upcoming retirement. I don't think I've got him mixed up with someone else.

Keep On Smiling,

While I have no deep-seated wish to be perceived as a heartless Friar, Monday and Tuesday are huge for S1915 on behalf of Barbaro -- the chief reason we're here -- and it'll be easier to focus on our assignment if everybody isn't weeping into their collective beer.

Btw: There's still at least two more hours to make calls today...not to mention faxing, e-mailing, and leaving messages on the weekend.

REPOST....

Before I get back to work I just read the following on the DB and thought it would be good to post it here.

crossposting:

URGENT! JUST RECEIVED:
"Please pass this on to anyone you think should know.

I just spoke to Steve Kline in Frist's office. Long conversation. He told me that they are receiving calls from Tenn constituents, for and against. And a lot against S. 1915. We really need to bombard him with requests to get this to the floor, because he told me that he is not sure how they are going to do it with the time and all the other issues that need to be voted on.

He did say that the petition would help, but we are going to need a lot of signatures."

Here is a link to the petition. Please share this with EVERYONE you know who supports Senate Bill 1915 to end horse slaughter.

Please forward and cross post everywhere!

We need to stay focused on Barbaro, too. Our encouragement is part of what keeps him going.

Friar Tuck is right. We have so little time left to give to S. 1915...And we will all find a way to stay together anyway, so it's best for us not to worry about that too much for now. There is a whole team of techie FOBs trying to figure that out so that the rest of us can concentrate on this!

Let's keep those phone lines humming...

Someone asked for DAVID LETELLS' story about how the Fog was named....Thank you David Letell..

Here it is:

"There is an old mexican tale about certain creatures that have the ability to
desaparecer, to disappear, vanish and reappear. This story was told about
a young colt, who at that time had'nt been weened and was still nameless. When the signal was sent out for the horses to come eat, all showed up but this little colt,
the entire crew of stablehands throughly searched the entire meadow, but were unable to find
this lost colt. The crew was at their wits end, when all of a sudden , this little colt walked out of the fog and appeared,as if by magic the stablehands were amazed and believe that this little colt was blessed with special powers and had the ability to desaparecer and was one of gods special creatures. Lost in the Fog went on in his career to win many races and shatter many track records, last year he won the Eclipse Award as the nations top sprinter, which makes me believe that the stablehands
were right, in their belief that he is one of gods special creatures....

## Update in Nala and Over Enough - to everyone who has them in their thoughts and prayers - thank you!
Nala just came through surgery, having her leg amputated and I am going to see her, she should be able to come home tomorrow. She was so scared but I am grateful she is awake now. We will pray that the cancer can be treated and that her pain can be managed. She is a tough girl.
Over Enough had his treatment for a huge ethmoid tumor yesterday. The vet called me at 8:30 last night to let me know he came through it ok and is doing fine today. He will be coming home tomorrow also and needs to go back in a month. The vet had an office in residency with Dr. Richardson at UPENN and I was very confident in him, he wanted updates on Barbaro as he works 24/7 and hasn't checked lately.
Don't know what happened with closing the board as I have been busy with my sick kids and haven't read any posts. I hope something can be done so we don't forget all our friends and animals that we need to help and have been helped or saved because of us. And most importantly passing S1915. Please let me know if I missed anything important regarding S1915.

###ALEX, FORGIVE ME FOR THIS LONG POST#####

DEAREST BARBARO...
ACN will remain the first thing we look for each awakening morning. Your Inspiration continues to be profound and will continue to keep us united. This is not goodbye...
Alex has opened the door to the wonderment of what "Love", "Passion" and "Compassion" among all of us Fans of Barbaro united, can do for our country. You will continue to remind us every single day of "ALL THAT IS GOOD IN LIFE".
You have given so many, whom at times have felt as if they stood alone or different, because of their love for animals, a place to come and feel at home. I've learned that I'm not so different...that life is kind and that there are so many others willing to sacrifice in your honor to help others.
You truly are the 8th WONDER of the world Bobby.

With that said, I can't help but post one of the very first articles I read about you posted by Carole Shaw on the Tim Woolley site.

***********FINDING A FOLKHERO IN BARBARO***********

Once upon a time, in 1938, came the makings of a legend named Seabiscuit.
He exemplified America's struggle during the Great Depression and
became a symbol of Hope to everyone because they clearly understood their
struggles of heart and spirit to overcome the worst hardships. Here was a runt,
an imperfect blacksheep thoroughbred who showed the world the championed
underdog can win! The unforgettable lesson taught is -- the heart has
deep untapped potential to beat unbelievable odds in adversity's face, if
lovingly cared for, despite given terrible circumstances.
Seabiscuit proved that struggling Americans could beat those odds too!
He became their symbol of Hope for the 20th Century. Soon, there would
come another folkhero with his own legend in the making for 21st Century
America.

Fast Forward 68 years to 2006. Again, Americans are struggling to put
their families' lives back together after catastrophic natural disasters
ongoing and a war that divides us. Along comes our folkhero Barbaro who -- with
shattered leg, 5 surgeries, temporary complications from infection --
unites us as his team to work together harder for good. Barbaro's will to
survive gives us all back our faith in God and Hope in mankind's caring and
sharing attitude to improve life for others.

Self and differences put aside, resting from our struggles, we once
again see the same ignited Light of Hope rekindled in giving our Special
Barbaro a second chance to live comfortably. This same mindset is what built and
made America strong. Today, this attitude prevails in our 'Love Marks' for
Barbaro who returns LOVE one hundredfold like Seabiscuit did years ago.

As history repeats claiming her folkhero, we realize all folkheros
appeal to us because they make positive changes and influence people to act.
They bring out the best of human nature. See how Barbaro positively
impacted others in just weeks. New path is being pioneered with cutting edge veterinary medicine and care for all animals with the BARBARO FUND (www.vet.upenn.edu). Horse Racing and Track Officials are seriously reviewing and changing their practices, taking action to prevent
serious injuries to jockeys and horses alike. Did you know weekly 35-some jockeys
are injured? In past two weeks alone, too many champion horses were
seriously injured (with 2 being put down) too!

The above incidents have led E.P.O.N.A. (Equine Protection Of North
America) to step up to the plate in Epping, New Hampshire. They are now a
pipeline for the Anti-slaughter of Horses Bill (www.eponarescue.org linked to
www.saplonline.org, legislative director Chris Heyde, Society for
Animal Protection Legislation). And, E.P.O.N.A. assists in direct adoptions
of premarin mare foals and retired thoroughbred racing horses across
America and Canada.

While Barbaro recovers, immense obstacles are being overcome as
Americans recover. His struggle and our struggles become easier to understand.
He is just like one of us. That is what grabs our hearts so much.

In the immortal words of Seabiscuit's trainer Tom Smith and owner
Charles Howard, "You NEVER THROW AWAY a whole life just because it gets banged
up a bit." We believe Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, are of
the same mindset including Dr. Dean Richardson and his medical team.
Barbaro's same fiercely, fighting spirit and champion heart inspire us to go that
extra mile for him while he does the same for us. Just as Seabiscuit
helped fix his broken down family and American hopes, Barbaro fixes the broken
parts in all of us. Barbaro is giving us a second chance back!

So, Barbaro, we will sit and rest awhile with you when our hearts and
souls get weary. We will sing softly these words from R. Loveland and B. Graham
-- "You Raise Me Up" -- to you!

"You raise me (us) up so I (we) can stand on mountains.
You raise us up to walk on stormy seas.
I (we) are strong when you are on my (our) shoulders.
You raise me (us all) to more than I (we) can be,"

You are the right folkhero and a legend in the making. Our prayer, may all
see the living proof you are our folkhero answering America's call to
act. We salute you Big Guy for showing us what we can really do, together,
beating seemingly unbeatable odds. Keep winning this new kind of race
against time. Blessings and Love heading your way, today, and every
day!!!

Dedicated to Barbaro, The Jacksons & extended families, loyal fans,
Woolley et al, Michael, Peter, Edgar, Dr. Richardson, Barbaro's care team &
staff, plus everyone who wants to know "Why does Barbaro Grab Us So?"

Barbaro is living proof that this works.

Don't Quit

When things go wrong as they sometimes will.
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill.
When funds are low and the debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to cry When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about.
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

I hope the racing assn. has a special eclipse award his year for ownwers..They do have an owners award but i'm not sure if it's for the most wins only. I don't think so...

IF I am correct is there ANY DOUBT that Mr and Mrs Jackson win it hands down.

They SAVED possibly the greatest horse of all time. They didn't have to, BUT THEY DID. They went the extra mile. AND because they did they just may have revolutionized the racing world with the new racing substances.

FOR THIS ALONE THEY DESERVE THE AWARD...

BLESS YOU BARBARO..AND BLESS YOU MR& MRS JACKSON. THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU...

OK, i'm off the soap box.

I am very sad that Alex has decided to shut down the discussion boards, however I do understand his reasoning. On several occasions I have offered to help him with the site, but got no response. I know that it is a massive undertaking to monitor a board and I am sure he is a bit overwhelmed by the many posters he has to keep up with here. I have enjoyed answering questions for several people about horse racing. It is a marvelous sport and I hope that you continue to learn about it. We will continue our nightly vigil for Barbaro as we have been since July 15. I truly wish people would not be so quick to criticize others, and place blame where it is not necessary. We have wars going on in many parts of the world, it's a shame some have chosen to rage one here, where it effects so many other innocent people that just want to come together for the same common cause for a magificent horse.

What is the best argument to battle with Senator Cornyn? He states that the bill would conflict with Private Property Rights Law so he's not backing this bill. What's the best to the point argument I can use against his concerns?

Jock...I would point out that individual owners will still be able to dispose of their horses
as they sit fit (abuse laws not withstanding, of course). The bill only prohibits slaughter of horses for human consumption.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at December 1, 2006 9:42 PM

Good Afternoon.....I hope you will excuse my unawareness, but I am not very well informed re the use of the computer and web sites,etc.. That being a given...can someone explain why a site has to be monitered or whatever it is that seems to be so much work involved. Believe me, I am not being critical of Alex in the least. He has opened so many doors to people re horses, etc. I am just wondering why we cant go on with the site without a monitor or host. Is this possible.

Another subject....I talked with Megan in Sen Burns office yesterday. As she says...."you people are just wasting your time calling Sen Burns....he is not going to change his mind on this." But she also said that she believed that he would do nothing to stop the bill in whatever form it eventually takes from being voted out of the commerce committee so it can be voted on by all the senate.

That seems to be slightly good news. Now to try to figure out what we can do to help this political process........IMO calls to the people who are most active on the bills behalf?????

From talking with Sen Ensign aide, it is like preaching to the choir, in his words to call this office. I just think we should let the ones who are co sponsors and who would vote yes need our calls, even more than the hard core opponets.

BTW, did you notice that both airports in chicago and dallas were having so much trouble due to weather today. I got a small measure of pleasure from knowing how close the h/s plants are to both these locations. Sorry if this offends anyone.

Any suggestions for anything else I can do to help with S1915. This is driving me crazy and all I seem to do is cry.

Sorry for so long a post. Tnx Ellie Az

Jock4hire:
With all due respect, do not waste your time with him. Stick to the Sen. Colemans and the list Debra and Soccoro post. Burns cannot be turned away from the dark side! And his opponents in the senate know this and they are strategizing against him and others who are against the bill. We have to trust they know what they are doing. The rumor has it, and it may not even be rumor, is that Senator Ensign is holding the bill so no one can hurt his efforts to get it to the floor. Trust the senators on our side. They know much more than we do. They need our support. Senator Landrieu's aides are hard at work behind the scenes to figure out a way to get this done. I understand the concern that horse owners would now be burdened with the cost and effort included in disposal of a horse carcass. For the most part, this is something that responsible owners consider before purchasing any animal, no matter what the size. I am told that the disposal is not an easy matter. Most horse owners help each other out with this sad task. Methods of disposal generally depend on the attachment of the owners to the animal, and funds available. I believe most bury their horses. In any event, their places of burial depend on local laws and city ordinances. Many owners hold their horses burial site as just as sacred as that of their other animals who shared their lives with them.

FOB's

I think Cornyn's concerns have to do with the all mighty $$$. That w/out the slaughter houses the price of the horse would drop so significantly that it would affect these owners Private Property Rights. I personally don't think it's going to cause any prices to drop except those of these KB's maybe. But a 4,000.00 horse will still be a 4,000.00 horse. I need some good ammunition to argue this point cause my opinion I don't think is gonna do it, . . .

One good thing - Burns is out in January. There were, apparently, a lot of ethical issues regarding him, so it's no surprise he wouldn't be on the side of the angels - especially if there's money involved.

To all and to Jock4hire:
Senator Landrieu's letter to Senator Frist clearly states that a passage of the bill does
not infringe on the owners' private rights. Use this. It's powerful ammunition! Download the letter. Go to the discussion board. Click on "advanced search." In the box type in landrieu In the left menu you will find it in many places. Just keep trying! And remember, every excuse the pro-slaughter people throw at you is weak, they have no foundation. Where I live there is a company that comes with a big truck and carries away your dead horse. It is then buried in a big grave where the ordinance allows such a burial. Not all ranches/farms have the ability to bury big animals but there are services in most areas that can do it. The ranch where we had our horses chose to have a dead horse removed as they did not have the ability to bury it. You need a back-hoe and a tractor and as Pamela said you have to check your local ordinance to find out what you can do.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at December 1, 2006 10:02 PM

Jock...So many of the opposition's concerns were proved to be baseless when California passed its own anti-slaughter legislation. I believe that the current practice of horse slaughter for human consumption artificially inflates the market value of the horse. This is simply because other countries do not allow the practice. Once this price inflation happens, and money changes hands, there is a fundamental desire on the part of the slaughter industry to keep that price inflated.
It is almost like saying...I make more money when I manipulate the market for horses through slaughter, so let's not stop the slaughter because I won't make as much money. But for some pro-slaughter people, this is their only concern. Horses are viewed as strictly livestock, not pets or valued family members, and their worth is measured only in the amount of money they can bring in.

Posted by: Pamela at December 1, 2006 10:04 PM

I counter the Property Rights claim by informing them that we are already governed by many laws that dictate how we can dispose of our property.

We are not allowed to simply throw our trash in the street, even though we own it. There are laws which tell us how we are allowed to dispose of all of our 'personal property', be it a car, computer, environmental waste, or a horse.

We also must obey laws which dictate how we can use our personal property. I may own a vehicle, but that doesn't give me the right to dis-obey traffic laws.

Regrding carcass disposal, I ask them if know how the 100,000's of cats and dogs are disposed of each year after being HUMANELY euthanized and how many pounds of carcasses are disposed of. Not a single aide has been able to answer these questions. I tell them that a typical horse weighs about the same amount as 15 labradors. I also ask if they have information at all regarding the environmental impact of the horses that are humanely distroyed each year. Again, they can't answer.

In my area, we are technically not allowed to bury horses but this law is extremely difficult to enforce. Some use rendering facilities for disposal and some excavating companies have licenses to bury animals in mass graves.

Joyce,
Where I am we can not bury any animals in our yards, dogs, cats. Nothing.

One more note,

When I had the pleasure of talking to dear Katie, she brought up the property rights issue and stated that horse owners should be able to sell or dispose of their horses in any manner they choose. I told her that I own several guns but the goverment has no problem telling me who I can sell a gun to or how I can dispose of it.

Wanted everyone to know I found a great website:

http://www.theequinesanctuary.org

They are in California and if you go to their site there is a video to watch-have to look around for it a bit.

There is information on this site about the reason horsemeat has become so popular in foreign countries. It's because of MAD COW DISEASE! Many people in Europe don't trust their beef because of the disease and have turned to the foreign horsemeat market (that being mostly from the US) for a source of meat. This explains a lot to me, maybe some of you already knew about this. It's a real money maker abroad now that MAD COW is on the scene!

Senator Cornyn IS only interested in the $$$$. I am a native Texan, from Houston living in Dallas and I am quoting him from an article by Todd Gillman in the Dallas Morning News, from 9/22/06 " I am on record as opposing the horse slaughter bill because I believe it represents a taking of private property by the federal government. If you've got a horse that's worth 200 bucks and federal government passes legislation that makes it worth zero, and actually ends up costing you money, to me that's a 'taking'.." The fifth Amendemnt bars the government from taking private property without just compensation". An owner unable to sell a horse for slaughter could spend hundreds of dollars for euthanasia and burial or endering.

As I have state many times in the earlier months Senator John Cornyn I believe does not want to abide by the wishes of the people that elected him and vote to stop this practice. It is illegal in the state of Texas to sell horse meat for human consumption but the federal government has helped them, the foreign interests get around this with a loop hole. Also, the Texas and Southwest Cattle Associations receive $3 per head of horse that goes through the Texas slaughter houses. (Blood) money for Texans and two of the nations slaughter houses are here in the Dallas area, Fort Worth and Kaufman. So Senator Cornyn is truly interested in the special interest groups of this state! Makes me sick but he is all about the $$$$$. I even understand that the plants don't really pay much taxes because they are foreign owned. It is pretty pathetic and the people here in Texas are not in favor of this but it really has been kept a secret.

Wish there were some way to change his mind but how would you go against someone so "bought"????

It is a disgrace because in 2004 the US Senate assed Resolution 452 declaring December 13 as the National Day of the Horse. The purpose of this day is to encourage the people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history and character of the United States. Wonder how SENATOR CORNYN voted on this issue????

Sorry to be so long winded but it needs to be restated and restated because it is Senators like him that refuse to recognize the will of the people that elected them. That is wrong!!!!

Cremation is also an option, but due to the size of a horse it's a rather pricey option if you want the ashes back. Mass cremation is currently used for small and large animals. Composting is also gaining in popularity.

On disposal
There are many, many horses who die every year through natural causes. Disposal of them does not seem to be an issue. The number of slaughtered horses (who would no longer be slaughtered and eaten, but would be disposed of in the usual ways) is a drop in the bucket, in comparison to horses who die annually in the U.S. from other causes. Ninety thousand horses are slaughtered each year, but hundreds of thousands die in other ways. I think the figure is somewhere around 900,000.

To everyone:
Here's Senator Landrieu's letter! It's powerful in that it addresses some of the rebuttals we hear. And it clearly states the bill does NOT infringe on private property rights!
Daryl!
P.S. This is so great to see everyone working so hard! I am proud to be a part of this group! And Socorro once posted it's okay to list your activities on S.1915, it's not bragging. It may motivate people. With that in mind I printed 1000 HSUS flyers, 300 have been put on windshields, more would have been except for that nuisance blizzard that I had to employ my putter to get ice off my car. Tomorrow and Sunday the rest will meet the resting place of windshields of Tulsans!

The Honorable William H. Frist, M.D.
Majority Leader
United States Senate
S-230 The Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20510
The Honorable Harry Reid
Democratic Leader
United States Senate
S-221 The Capitol
Washigton, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Frist and Senator Reid:
We are writing to urge you to pass legislation in this Congress that bans the commercial slaughter of horses for human consumption overseas.
On September 7th, the House passed H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, by a vote of 263-146. The bill is now on the calendar awaiting action by the full Senate. H.R. 503 and its companion, S. 1915, will put and end to the despicable practice of slaughtering American horses for human consumption overseas. The Senate is on record supporting an end to commercial horse slaughter -- 69 Senators supported an amendment in the FY 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill which prevented funds to be used for the inspection of horse meat in the United States. A similar amendment passed the House by a vote of 269-153 and was retained in Conference. Unfortunately, the Department of Agriculture circumvented Congressional intent to end the practice of horse slaughter and has allowed inspections to continue on a fee for service basis. A poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies in August found that nearly 70% of Americans oppose the slaughter of horses for human consumption overseas.
There is great deal of misinformation being circulated about this legislation and its impact on horses and the agriculture community. Although horses have never been part of our food chain, nearly 90,000 horses were slaughtered last year in three European-owned plants located in the United States. The horsemeat was exported largely to France and Belgium where Europeans eat it as a delicacy. Those who defend this practice and oppose this legislation believe that if this legislation is enacted, America will be faced with an “unwanted horse” problem. They want Americans to believe that ending the commercial slaughter of horses will create an unmanageable burden on owners and horse rescue groups, which would lead to suffering among horses. This belief is contrary to the evidence. Twelve years ago 300,000 horses were being slaughtered and that number is down to 90,000 with no evidence of increased abuse and neglect. The reality is fewer horses are being slaughter with no extra burden.
California has served as a test case. In 1998, California banned the slaughter of horses and the interstate transportation of horses for slaughter. There has been no evidence that the ban resulted in an increase in the number of abandoned, abused, or mistreated horses. Instead, since California banned horse slaughter, horse theft in that state has decreased by 34%.
Additionally, contrary to claims that horses sent to slaughter are old and infirmed, the USDA’s own statistics demonstrate that the vast majority (92.3%) of American horses being sent to slaughter are healthy and many of them are stolen or taken under false pretenses—a gross violation of private property rights. Most owners taking their horse to auction are unaware their horse may end up at a slaughterhouse due to a cadre of self-described “killer-buyers” that regularly visit horse auctions to buy horses for slaughter.
This legislation does not prevent a horse owner from humanly euthanizing their horse and does not infringe on private property rights.
As the leaders of the Senate, we believe it is vital that you allow this common sense legislation which is clearly supported by a bipartisan majority of our body the opportunity for passage before the year is over. A bipartisan majority supports this legislation and wants to end it once and for all.
We owe it our constituents to end this practice. Therefore, we urge you to ensure passage of The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act this session. Thank you for your consideration of our request.
LeSincerely,

Joyce,
Yes, they don't mind because they don't see immediate affects of those toxins, however, with mad cow disease it is really horrible and will ruin someone's life if it doesn't kill them. Eating cows that have "mad cow" can affect the brain, nervous system, make people crazy, etc. I'm not making excuses for them eating horsemeat I am giving the information about why it has become so popular. It is expecially popular in Belgium where mad cow disease was the worst. Hopefully, when they get rid of it the request for horsemeat will drop. Horsemeat is not popular in Britain as they were able to control problems with the disease.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at December 1, 2006 10:34 PM

On property rights
Horse owners do not have an absolute right to do whatever they want with their horses. The government already regulates this in many ways. For example, I would think that in most jurisdictions you can't kill your horse by dragging it with a vehicle until dead. There are cruelty laws that prevent this.

The government regulates property usages in many, many ways, and all that is required by way of justification is a legitimate governmental purpose.

Debbie,

I've pretty much already exhausted the stolen horse point. That was one of the first things I did use to make my point to some of the Senators. Because I've personally been a victim of horse theft. In Ca. before they passed the law to ban the slaughter of horses in that state. I can not accept that my own animal might have been sent to the KB for any reason because he was a show horse and in show condition when taken. But I don't think that'd be any reason to stop some punk that needed a few hundred bucks for his next score or whatever!! The thought sickens me and I can't bear it and have tried not to think of it at all. However it has haunted me too many times throughout this involvement and I've been forced to accept that this is not only possible to have happened, but it is probable.

Cora,
Was Durbin in the last election? He hasn't taken a stand because he doesn't want to go out on a limb in his home horse slaughter state! Shame on him! Think I'm gonna call Dick Durbin! But, because you're from Illinois you've got more of an "in" than I do, keep pushin'!

Way to go everyone working on this, it feels good, it feels empowering to speak up for our speechless equine friends!

Off to work!

Hi, FOB's!

Everybody ready for the big S1915 push next week? We can be heard - now is our time, now is our chance.

####
Well, its just hit me that the site is closing.

####
I got to the ranch before the storm hit. Every single horse was talking to me. All of them. That has never happened before. Even the Appaloosa came over to me and gave me an embrace over the fence. Even the boys were a bit subdued (hungry is more like it. When I got the hay to them, they dove right in...). They know me all too well.

Barbaro, we're doing all this for you now. I know there are a lot of people thinking of how we can continue the momentum. Our group has to continue in some way, shape or form.

Steve Rei, have joined...:)Hugs to BDude and BDudette.

####
Becky Fredericks, will e-mail you tomorrow- the lights are starting to flicker here and I can't guarantee power will stay on. Will send Reiki to you and the Meezers tonight around 7.

Barbaro, just want to tuck you in early tonight. Its been awfully windy - hopefully you can get outside tomorrow - it will be colder but it should be brighter than today...:) and tomorrow is bath day...how much better can life get?

To bad slaughtering isn't under the animal cruelty laws or could it be? Wonder if that would take an act of Congress!!!!

Sorry,

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at December 1, 2006 11:25 PM

Renee,
From the bottom of my heart I am so sorry for my post last night blaming you and hurting you. I have felt very sad since and all through the day today. What I said was uncalled for and not the kind of person I choose to be and not the kind of energy I want to put out into our universe. So forgive me for being so inconsiderate of you and your feelings and really venting about something I truly know nothing about in your regard. Hopefully my apology will help you to heal from this and to know that you have been a significant part of the site and of the efforts to pass the horse slaughter bill everyone has worked so hard on. Wishing you the best life has to offer and once again sending my sincere apology. Phyllis

As of last night, I have a forum in place for any that wish to continue friendships or have a place to communicate about the ongoing projects.

I admit, it may need a little tweaking here and there, but nothing major that can't be done on the fly. It is fully functional at this time.

You don't need to sign up to read posts, but you do need a valid email address to register.

Anyone that is interested can email me by clicking my name here, or sending an email through the forum.

Went to my local newspaper today. The 2 ladies didn't know the U.S has 3 hores slaughter plants. Gave a letter to her, and a flyer from the Humane Society. Praying she will print it!
Call the 4 senators and my senators. Faxed all day.
Now I'm out of here, it's Friday and wine time.
Good night all.
Night my sweet Barbaro. Sleep well and heal!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at December 1, 2006 11:35 PM

Karen
Under the Constitution, the federal government has the authority to legislate only certain things, like Interstate Commerce. This is why the slaughter bill is in the Commerce Committee. The ban is actually a ban of TRANSPORT to slaughter for human consumption, and, I believe, of transport of horsemeat out of the country. (It's been a while since I read the bill.) This is the kind of thing Congress does have the authority to regulate. So no, I don't think Congress could enact a nationwide slaughter ban on the basis of cruelty. Local governments can regulate cruelty, but I don't think cruelty laws can be nationalized. Someone here probably knows more about this than I do, but I think that's the gist of it.

Love you, Barbaro so much. I thought of you today and gained needed strength.

Congratulations to Russell BAZE!!! that is AWESOME! Congratulations to Lafitt Pincay Jr, as well, for holding the title for so long, and for being so gracious and supportive of the "new kid". You gentlemen really epitomize what professional athletes are all about, and could teach a thing or two to many in other sports disciplines. You both have my admiration, as does Edgar Prado and so many who really earn admiration from so many for all the right reasons.

Here's to many more Winner's Circles, Russell!!

THRILLING NEWS about Russell Baze! From a much earlier update from Alex, it really sounds like Russell is one of the "good guys" of the racing world...and I have no doubt that Foggy was whispering encouragement in Butterfly Belle's ear!

TORNADO SIGHTING IN NORTH-CENTRAL CONNECTICUT - warnings in place!

I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT ALL THE WELL-MEANING PEOPLE who have already started message boards for us to use "when the time comes." If you were around when Alex last shut down the comments (temporarily), the same thing happened and people were scattered all over the place (cyber-wise)...I know that I personally could not keep up with all the different boards that people made available. ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR ONE SITE FOR ALL??

BARBARO, you gorgeous hunk of horse...did you get outside today? It was a bizarre 68 degrees in southern CT, and now the winds are howling. Curl up and get comfy, demand more treats, nip gently, and have a peaceful night's sleep with dreams of fillies and studmuffins and hand-picked Lael grass...and HEAL, HOOF, HEAL! I love you, dear boy!

have kinda just glossed over the posts on the subjects of "disposal" and "mad cow", in particular.

To add to Marilyn/CA's post, part of what is wrong with this issue of "disposal" as it relates to a person's "rights", is that the underlying cause is lack of education. Stepping aside from the various municipal and other agency rules governing burial on privately owned land, where have we gone wrong in educating people that as caretakers of horses, they have to anticpate that they will at some point, sadly, expire. And when they do, they will have to be buried or cremated, or (this sounds so awful, I hate to even put the words in print) "disposed of". It kind of goes back to things we've talked about at various times. Caring for horses, in health, sickness and death, costs money. If you can't bear those costs, well....I won't even say it, we all recognize that same old issue. So the problem is fueled by lack of education, to a large degree, and that some are just blindly ignorant to the fact that those costs are real and present, and are as much reality as those wonderful rides on trails, in the corral of the family home, whatever. The absence of education and blind naivete extends way back to the most simple basics of what to feed, what constitutes the need for vet care RIGHT NOW, not going online to find a quick, free fix, or asking your favorite feed store proprietor if there's something that can be bought cheaply as a fixall, ignorance of costs of things like teeth floating, how critical that is in young horses especially, shoeing, proper tack, stabling, all the associated requirements...oh I could go on and on. It is horrifying to know how many pleasure horses are in homes in which the caretaker is absolutely clueless. Not malevolently, just plain clueless. I'm afraid that it is these caretakers who are the ones who are duped into thinking that the guy who comes around with a truck is really a nice man who is going to help them out, or when a beloved horse expires, there's a "fix" as far as what to do with the body is concerned. And we know all to well that many of these horses are surrendered to rescue organizations because the caretakers simply have no concept of the costs of care.

Not a point to be made here, just adding to the discussion and giving my take on the scope of the problem

###
concerning Mad Cow. Without giving any proprietary information, I'll just share with you that I work in risk management, and my biggest client is involved in food service all over the world. One of the markets is Japan's part of the industry.

There have been embargoes on import of beef off and on throughout this year because of "mad cow" (BSE) There have been no exports of BSE infected meat, but the doors have been opened and closed several times, and the USDA is really stymied. Not to get into a whole discussion about whether the fear of infestation is justified or not, if just doesn't seem like a plausable or acceptable reason to replace beef with horse. Certainly none of here can comprehend that.

Again, not for any purpose but to share thoughts. And to hopefully alleviate any concerns that there may be risk of "mad cow" in our food supply. There isn't

Love to all

FOB's,

Carol in San Diego, Thanks for that article on Russell! One of the best ones I've read on his accomplishments. Cleverly done with the Ripkin / Rose comparisons! I enjoyed this one.

Debbie, No need to say you're sorry. I'm a big girl (well not much more than a jocks weight) but old enough to know how to deal with losses. I've had many awful losses but there is something about horse theft, ya know? You can't ever really come to terms with a loss you don't understand how it came to be lost in the first place. It's an unsettling feeling. In those days I was still pretty young and had no clue about horse slaughter. It's only these past months working on this bill I've been reminded. Don't feel bad for me I'm really okay.

Karen, this was years ago in Ca. and yes the police came out, and took a report and all that. They didn't give me much in the way of any "hope" of ever locating him. They didn't fill me with any false hopes in other words. They were very curt and polite, and felt sorry for me sure. That was all I remember of the police's involvement. I went to every farm, horse show and auction over the next 2 or 3 years in So. Ca. and a few times to No. Ca. to look for him, after that happened. I looked for him everywhere I went. Today I hope I'm helping him in the way of this work I do on this bill, so that my Bright Love may find some sense of comfort. It is for his memory, and all those beautiful horses still living and facing a horrible fate with these murderers that wield bolt guns, chains, and the butcher's knives, for they are still viable worthwhile horses who deserve our concerns and our love and affections. I'm going to continue to fight for for them. Too important to me now not too.

I'm Doing it Smiling!

jock4hire,

I hadn't read all of Senate Resolution 452, National Day of the Horse until recently. This is the part that really drives me to contact the Senate when I don't have any energy left in the day (see words in caps) . . .

"Whereas the horse is a living link to the history of the United States; Whereas without horses, the economy, history, and character of the United States would be profoundly different;

Whereas horses continue to permeate the society of the United States, as witnessed on movie screens, on open land, and in our own backyards; Whereas horses are a vital part of the collective experience of the United States and deserve PROTECTION AND COMPASSION;

Whereas because of increasing pressure from modern society, wild and domestic horses rely on humans for adequate food, water, and shelter; and Whereas the Congressional Horse Caucus estimates that the horse industry contributes much more than $100,000,000,000 each year to the economy of the United States;"

http://www.fund4horses.org/info.php?id=483

Too bad the Senate doesn't have a Horse Caucus like the Congress does . . .

Like Nancy, I have been concerned that there are so many efforts to start alternate sites. Anyone thinking of starting one might first want to go to the forums, where there are some threads on this issue. Someone is trying to start a Prospero/Delphi site because we are familiar with the format; another person is thinking of organizing a group chat to coordinate efforts...lots of good stuff going on there, and, hopefully, everyone can work toward ending up with a single site.

I understand and respect your wishes, but I'm very sad.

All the Best,

Posted by: Debbie at December 2, 2006 2:55 AM

Karen, Yes they are pretty trusting and caring and they depend on us because we humans have not given them any other choices, not really. I've been proud to be one of these caretaker's of the horses. Wish everybody felt even a fraction of what I've felt in my responsibilities towards our friends the horses. Then there wouldn't only be just a chance for this bill. There wouldn't have ever been one to have to fight in the first place. Think for a minute how powerful we could be with our voice, if every one on the planet just felt a fraction of what each of us here feels about the horses. It's really so much when you really think of that in serious terms! Thanks to you all for a progressive, successful day. When you lay your head on your pillow tonight ready for dreams to take you away from this slaughter, and this sadness, just say these words to yourself before you sleep,(tonight you can mean them)!!

Bobby, sweet Velvet Nose, time to tuck you in. It's very quiet here on Comments tonight. A sad quiet. But Bobby, all your friends here are working hard for the horses, and we're working hard on finding a way to stay together to celebrate you, and to work for the common good.

I know you've had a lot of big changes late: the cast is gone and your legs have to adjust. Michael and Peter are gone. Your daily routine has changed after 6 months. Hang in there. You are loved and cherished and thought about more than ever. Change can be good.

So sleep well tonight and heal that leg and that hoof, and keep your heart happy. Dream of of new website where your friends can be together and be happy. Be careful getting up and down, no clowning, and have ACN because tomorrow is bath day!

If anyone is out there--Good night, Barbaro Nation.

To my paisana Rosemarie: I think that your contacting Ron Reagan, Jr. would be brilliant. He is very eloquent and was raised by a great horse lover.
To Joyce: Thinking of you & Alexis.
To Steve: I'll send you an e-mail before the week concludes to learn more about the Google site. May BDude rise to great a new day with gusto and improved appetite.
To Skyler: The winds are howling here and we lost Internet connection earlier tonight, but here in far eastern coastal CT we are safe right now. Thank you for worrying about everyone in the Nutmeg State.
To Alex: Thank you for another day in which to send a message to Bobbey. I am so grateful for the daily updates about Barbaro. And without this site, I'd have never known that horse thefts and horse slaughter occur in 21st century America and therefore would never have contacted legislators about the pending legislation. I hope to some day have the opportunity to visit Fair Hill Farm; it sounds like a truly enchanting place. And whenever Barbaro gets to live in a place that allows for public visitation, I plan to go see him in person. I hope also to be able to volunteer next year at a horse shelter in CT, if they permit novices to do so. Again, many thanks to Alex and to all FsOB! Peace. RMH ####

I hope the people who are computer literate will be able to find us a place like TWF. I don't think we really knew what we had until it is gone.

Dearest Barbaro, your life has undergone constant change. First your injury, then the dreaded "L" and now losing your buds, Michael and Peter and the daily routine you followed with them. We, your fans, are having to readjust as well. We got too comfortable and thought this was a permanent place to come and talk and visit with you. Now we have to find a new place and that makes us sad. So why would we be surprised to hear you were unhappy not so long ago. Dr. Anderson says you seem happy again and maybe you will show us that we too will be happy again. Barbaro, Good night sweetie. Sweet dreams while that left hind hoof heals and grows back. Not only do I love you to pieces, but I endlessly admire the courage and tenacity you show us all every day; and you only 3 years old!!! I'll be sending you a special basket of goodies, care of your favorite florist, for Christmas. And remember I'm praying for you each and every day. GROW HOOF GROW!!

Alex,

Thanks for this wonderful website. I'd be lost without it. You are far and away the BEST for putting so much information out each and every day.

Hello Barbaro,

I just got home after starting my day at 4 a.m. You know that "donkey" day I had yesterday? Well, today it was "donkey drama" day. But, the stress is over and I couldn't wait to come here to tuck you in for the night! This is my reward for such a trying day!

Is New Bolton all decorated for the holidays? Hopefully they have a Christmas tree where you can see the star on top. Stars are meant to make wishes on them. Did you know that Honey? If you can see the star on the tree, don't let the opportunity pass you by!

Each night before we tuck you in, look at the star shining bright on top of the tree and make a wish that's dear to your heart. But don't tell anyone your wish. Not even Dr. Richardson or it will never come true.

Do you know what your wish is tonight? Shhh. Don't tell, remember?

Let's grab your blanket and settle in for the night now. With your wish made, the sweetest dreams are soon to follow. The healing will continue through the night and strength will carry you through your day tomorrow. (Bath day!)

I'll be here tomorrow to see if Alex has had a chance with an update. If not, I'll be back! I'm never far.

Now close yor eyes and start on those wonderful dreams. I'm sorry I'm so late tonight Honey. I waited all day to be able to tuck you in. I love you Barbaro. Good night. XXOO

Congratulations to Russell Baze today... on our various TV stations, he had more of his humble and self-effacing comments. Like he said, there are many who have won Eclipse awards, and many in the Hall of Fame, but none of them is the "winningest jockey", and he will enjoy it while HE is it.

I among others have been looking for news of Fondmort recently, but have not found any updates. However, I did find one INCREDIBLE photograph to share (Alex, maybe you'll be the only one to see this...):

AMAZING FONDMORT

I do miss Jo (UK)...

Good morning Shelley and the night owls and early larks.

Unseasonably warm here in south west England, now calm, but I think gales are forecast in some parts later.

I'm sure I saw that jump of Fondmort's; it was the second last at Cheltenham last March. It was the end of a long race and it was a massive leap. Haven't checked my facts, but I think he won the race. Hoping he wins the current one and has a long and happy retirement. No update so far today, but I take that as good news.

One fact that was mentioned today was that if Ouija Board wins in Hong Kong, she will be the biggest money prize winning racehorse Britain has ever produced, overtaking Singspiel ( another Breeeders's Cup winner). What a girl! But I just hope she comes home safe and sound.

Good morning, Barbaro...my sweet baboo and wonder-horse. I'm sorry I haven't been saying that for a few days...I've been here checking on you, but just coming to terms with what's been happening and all of this coming to an end soon. I feel close to you when I talk to you here...this is your place, and I'm going to miss that.

Good morning, all.

Shelley...thanks for that amazing picture of Fondmort! I've added him to My Space slide
show :-)

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans! (Morning, Jo & Liz!)

I hope the storms have passed you by this morning, Barbaro and that you will be able to go outside again today.

Like Jo, I had to take a few days off from posting. I know Barbaro didn't know I wasn't posting but it just didn't feel right. So, I'll return, at least once a day until we are done. I have been checking in and reading every day. Most importantly, I have been contacting the focus group of senators. I recieved a reply from Senator Frist last week that basically told me that since I was not from Tennessee, he could do nothing to help me as he needed to concentrate on his home constituents in his brief remaining time. I will be responding once my blood pressure returns to normal.

Alex, as always, thank you for all you have done and contine to do for us. And, please, pass along my thanks to everyone who assists you in getting us those all-important updates on the Big Bay One.

Marg
