    Barbaro Updates: 148

    updates are now here.

Update 1134: Michael Dickinson is a Bloodhorse chat guest this thursday: Talkin' Horses with Michael Dickinson. Feel free to submit your questions ... about the synthetic tracks and the Tapeta surface. Brian Meehan has been named international trainer of the year in England (for obvious reasons there is no similar award for US-based trainers).

Trivia question: what is the connection between Brian Meehan and Michael Dickinson ?

Update 1133: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). Mrs. Jackson just called and she had just visited Barbaro. All remains the same.
update 12:10 pm, monday, december 4

Update 1132: No Barbaro update yet this morning. It was a chilly morning at Fair Hill, bright sky but a brisk wind. I rode six, which is a comfortable number in the winter I think. Hawty Creek went out back for a jog around, she felt good after her work over the weekend. I took one to the synthetic (Tapeta) track. The track just seems to get better.

Tim breezed a couple of horses yesterday on the synthetic track. This was the first time he had breezed on the track and he breezed Whos Happy and Real Lace. Both went very well I think. Tim thought the track felt great for the respective breezes (Tim rode both of them). Tim did mention Michael Dickinson was again at Fair Hill yesterday to see how the track was, as was someone from Philadelpia Park. This evening temperatures are supposed to plunge into the 20s so that will present a nice early test to the track in the morning.

Keep calling. Eddie Kilroy left this in the comments (timestamp 12:23 pm):

Hey HORSES!!! Today's the BIG ONE!!! CALL!! CALL!!
CALL!!! GET YOUR GRANMA TO CALL. SLAM the SENATORS! We have to get S1915 to the floor this week. Frist is getting heat from the Walking Horse people, which you know is strong in his home state, so work him hard, My listeners or pro active on this issue. I expect them to work hard today. You folks are so special, being FOBS, as I am. So let's do for Barbaro and his Buds. By the way Dean and Eric are looking at digital imagings of two of our horses that have some lameness problems. Your good thoughts are appreciated. Eddie Kilroy

Update 1131: The Barbaro update should be sometime later this morning. Not much horseracing news as things are definitely quietening down on that front this time of year. Our last major race coverage of the year will be the Hong Kong Vase, which is this weekend. Ouija Board looks in good order as she prepares for this race, which is her final race: BOARD FLYING AHEAD OF FINAL TEST.

I wanted to thank Jen for providing the Barbaro updates on sunday. After I quickly went into Fair Hill to take care of Hawty Creek, I took the day off and headed up to New York City. While doing that I was hoping the Jackson's would call with updates (thank you!) and Jen was very happy to post them to the site after I called them in. My visit to New York was great. Oddly as I was leaving I was on the subway, I looked over and thought I recognized someone. I leant over to my friend and said "I think I know that guy" ... just as "that guy" leant over and whispered to his wife "I think that's Alex Brown". Small world, Victor was an MBA student at Wharton when I used to work at Wharton.

Time is now very short, Congress is returning, the next few days are super critical in our quest to have congress vote and pass the anti horse slaughter bill. We are operating under the notion that today is a national call-in day, inspired by "Fan of Barbaro" Cathy, working with Eddie Kilroy. Please call, fax etc. and have your friends do the same.

THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

Here is the most effective way to take action during this crucial and very critical two-week period beginning on Monday, December 4, 2006:

Contact both of your U.S. Senators and ask them to please urge the Senate leadership to deal with this issue before adjournment.

    ALSO….Please contact:
Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist (TN)
    (202) 224-3344
    Fax: (202) 228-1264

Senate Minority Leader, Harry Reid (NV)
    (202) 224-3542
    Fax: (202) 224-7327

Senate Majority Whip, Mitch McConnell (KY)
    (202) 224-2541
    Fax; (202) 224-2499

In addition, please contact both the Republican & Democratic sponsors of S.1915 and ask them to please work to get this to the floor before adjournment:
    Senator John Ensign (R-NV)
    (202) 224-6244
    Fax: (202) 228-2193

    Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
    (202) 224-5824;
    Fax: (202) 224-9735

Finally, an important addition to your contact list is incoming House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi (CA). During the hearings on this legislation in the House of Representatives earlier this year, Congresswoman Pelosi supported and voted for the bill. Please ask her to contact her colleague in the Senate, incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (now the Senate Minority Leader) and ask him to urge outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to bring this bill to the floor for a vote before adjournment.
Nancy Pelosi has the right to say that the House has already voted on this bill, passed it with 263 voted and consequently, does not want to have to deal with this issue again next year. ask her to get involved this way.
Congresswoman and incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

    Fax: (202) 225-8259; Email: sf.nancy@mail.house.gov

PLEASE START MAKING THESE CALLS IMMEDIATELY....WE CAN'T BE SURE HOW LONG CONGRESS WILL BE IN SESSION....IT'S VERY POSSIBLE THAT WE MAY ONLY HAVE THIS WEEK!!!!

Jock4 hire, thanks for the story of how Jim got his nickname. Even though it is funny, it also shows what a kind heart he has to think he was really going to help that guy's old lady with her health. Glad to know he is a home grown guy.

Well off to call the senators. Thanks Cathy Potter and Eddie Kilroy for setting it up.

    #### Alex, hope you enjoyed your trip to NYC!
To all FsOB: I sent Sens. Dodd & Lieberman e-mails last PM, asking them to contact Sen. Frist to get S1915 to the floor for a vote before the close of this session. Both of them are co-sponsors of the bill. Perhaps if one or both of your senators support this bill, you might ask them to do the same. Peace to each of you. ####

Nancy Pelosi is a new addition.

My Dear Friends of Barbaro, Alex, Mr. Matz, Mr. Aleo, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson, Dean Hendricks, Dr. Sweeney and the staff of NBC. I have failed to post for such a very long time due to illness and exhaustion.

I have marveled how you all have moved and knitted a nation together on the issue of horse slaughter. I wish to apologize for being unable to join in the fray in a meaningful way and to carry out my responsibilities as an old BarbaroManiac.
The following can wait--telephone calls remain at the top of the agenda.
Permit me to ask: Has there ever been a coming together of all the "estates" of horse racing?A great gathering for the purpose of full and frank--discussion with the bark on--on just about everything.I would like to toss out for your expert consideration the following proposal.

In Honour of Barbaro and In Memory of Lost in the Fog, Pine Island, Gallant Secret, etc.

    THE MINK AND MANURE CONFERENCE

DATE: To be determined by the people named above to ensure max attendance
LOCATION: Lexington, KY would be a natural and expected site. I would also like to make the case for the campus of the UPENN and all the human resources that the institution could bring to the table. More important, I thought that it might inspire a unique coming together of the Vet School with other University departments.

As a possible run-up to the conference to spread the work and garner public attention--how about a Horses and the Arts event? An open to the public event featuring films selected by UPenn students; premieres of plays, poetry recitals, monologues about horse racing/ownership/slaughter, etc.

    Suggested Coference Program
DAY ONE: Words of Welcome: Mrs. Gretchen Jackson

    OPPORTUNITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF OWNERSHIP
Possible topics of discussion: Process: the buy and selling of horses; HORSE AS PROPERTY--responsibilities and opportunities at birth and early years, racing years, retirement.

Brooms and Grooms: Housing, Salary,Immigration; Horse Care from the Bottom Up--A Groom's Perspective and Insights

Trainers' Table: Pracitces and Procedures; Innovations: The Barbaro Effect; Health Checks/Procedures Before and After Races

Possible Roundtable Discussions: Between Owners and Trainers, Vets, etc. with a goal to the fashioning new agreements, policy and procedures.

EVENING: BANQUET: A Celebration of Champions: Human and Equine

DAY TWO: THE HORSE OF THE 21st CENTURY
Breeding and Attributes; It's the Legs, Stupid; Speed at all costs?
Workshops that will bring all constituencies in meaningful discussion.

Masters of the Arena: A gathering of senior race track officials to plan the race tracks of the future: Synthetic Tracks: What's Next?; Report Initial Findings re: the tracks; Equine Care: MASH for horses trackside? Number of Equine Ambulances needed on site, etc.

WE THE PEOPLE: Rescue and Anti-Slaughter Groups
My Friends, you are the experts, fill in this slot.
Roundtable discussions that bring owners, rescue organizations, vets to draft policy and procedures that are so badly needed.

EVENING: Tall Tails and War Stories Cocktail Reception: Hosted by the Friends of Barbaro
Special Program: Voices of Youth--Vet Students: A Perspective, Engineering and Business Students: The Economics of the Horseracing Industry; Race Tracks as a Study in Physical Plant.

DAY THREE: Arts and Science of Equine Care: VETS Day
--The First Draft of Medical History: Barbaro--A Case Study: Dr. Richardson

The good Folks at NBC can design this section.

I would love to see a forum with reps of all constituencies coming together, including reps of the insurance industry, to engage in deep discussion regarding track side care and euthanasia policy and practices.

    CLOSING: Hail and Farewell Reception

    DAY FOUR: Morning
Press Conference: Release of Agreements/Accords/Summary of Discussions

I love you all. I love Barbaro.

Praise the Lord and Pass the Carrots,
    Lillian Petroff

Good Monday Morning Alex, Bobby and fellow fans,

I made my first round of calls to the Senators and will call them all again after work. I know this is a busy time of year for everyone but unfortunately, we don't get to choose the time to get S.1915 passed. The only choice we have is to call or not. Please everyone - it doesn't take long to do - the aides don't want a long conversation. They want to get off the phone quickly.

Have a great day all - calling, emailing and faxing.

    Good Mornning, FOB's!

I have just finished the morning e-mail communications and will follow up this afternoon after I work with the boys.

Everybody, we need to flood the Senate with our communications. This is the time, this is the place.

Do it for the horses, do it for ourselves, do it for Barbaro, do it for the Jacksons, Alex, Tim, Peter/Kim, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado.

Then we'll go to the SH's, tear them down, and help erect sanctuaries, memorials and gardens and rescue facilties.

Lillian Petroff, I LOVE your conference concept and suggestions. You thought this thru and I would love to attend if this can be created.

Many thanks to Shelley A, Socorro (I like you...), Cathy Potter, Marilyn/CA, and those (there are too many for me to remember right now and I do not mean to offend by not acknowledging everybody's efforts...you are all special people who care) who have been tireless in their efforts to keep this board informed of what we need to do to get our elected representatives to listen to us.

Eddie Kilroy, glad to see you back and will send prayers for your horses...:)

Thanks, as always, to Alex for posting all of this and for being so patient for so long. You deserve to have your life back.

    More later.

    Go for it.

Good Morning FOBs....Today is the day with Eddie Kilroy. I just heard him talking about it on XM's Willie's Place. I didn't hear the whole thing having just go out of the shower but he was saying something about the pro-slaughter, BIG MONEY and he and Willie Nelson receiving threats. The he played the song OLD HORSE. I've begun my day in tears. Please call.

HOT FLASH....OOPPPSSS I MEAN NEWS FLASH.... LOL
I've exchanged emails with Eddie Kilroy about a collaborative effort scheduled for Monday 12/4, the day the Senators return. I've asked him to rally his pro S1915 listeners over the next few days and we'll have our own Nat'l Call In Day. Of course, for us every day is a call in day but if we can increase the numbers Monday it will remind the Senators that we have not forgotten the mission. The strategy remains the same unless otherwise directed by Shelley & Debra. I told Eddie I would provide names & numbers of our targeted Senators. SO PLEASE TREAT MONDAY AS A DAY TO CALL IN DEBTS, BEG, PLEAD, TRADE FAVORS, whatever it takes so we can tally some really big numbers.
    Thanks for your help.

    To Darlin:
As the senate reconvenes this week horse lovers everywhere, and especially on this site, will give every effort to end the horrors you and your equine brothers and sisters have suffered from the dark side of the human heart! For months Fans Of Barbaro have resolved to end the horse slaughter industry. We have worked tirelessly and will continue to do so until that industry is shut down. It is in your memory and spirit that will be with us for each call, fax and e-mail today. You will never be forgotten by the good people at TWR. Our promise to you is one day your brothers and sisters will be free from the horrors that took your life.
Here’s the update on 10-20-06 from the Missouri Humane Society announcing Darlin’s death!

    Darlin
Darlin (10-20-06) We are very sad to report that, at the recommendation of her veterinarian, Darlin was humanely euthanized last night. Her injuries were very severe and she was not progressing as we had hoped. Her right rear hoof was sloughing off making it difficult for her to stand and she had suffered permanent damage to her spine. The veterinarian assessed that she was in a great deal of pain and that she would not be able to recover from her injuries. When we heard this grave news, our hearts sank. We had been hopeful that Darlin could pull through and recover fully. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the veterinarians and staff who lovingly and expertly cared for Darlin and the Horse Heroes who supported her treatment during this difficult time.

Thank you for being a Horse Hero!
You've given some great horses a second chance.

Good morning Barbaro, Alex and all FOBs.

I know we've all been working very hard on getting our senators to get this bill to the Senate floor for a vote and we will continue to do that this week as well. Like all of you, I want nothing more than to see this bill pass the Senate. But considering that our time together as a group is growing limited, I thought maybe I should ask . . . do we have a "plan B"?

I hope and pray we won't need it, but what if the worst happens and the bill doesn't make the floor before recess? Should we consider a plan B? Have we ever taken any steps to reach out to our state governors? If the Senate should fail us, should we consider reaching out to individual state governors to try to get more states to pass laws that ban the slaughter, transport to slaughter or sale of any horse for slaughter. Maybe since only two states have slaughterhouses, we might be able to put our strength into getting those two states to ban horse slaughter. This could possibly force the shut down of the existing slaughterhouses. Then, the other states may follow simply out of not wanting new slaughterhouses in their backyards.

Again, maybe this has already been proposed and I just missed it. If that's the case, I apologize for wasting time with this post. If not, what do you guys think? I'm still working, hoping and praying for the senate to pass the bill. I just thought while we were all still together that we might take the time to discuss a "plan b".

REPOST-_Great story to start the day

    Diminished Body, Persevering Spirit
Nurturing Medical Staff Keeps Barbaro Alive

    By John Scheinman
    Special to The Washington Post
    Tuesday, October 17, 2006; E01

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- In the middle of the night, when a rhythmic routine settles over the intensive care unit at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, nurse Jamie DeFazio marvels at the patient in her care.

"Sometimes it's just the two of us sitting there," she said. "He's easy when he's sleeping. You can pet him, and he's not the macho guy, and you say, 'Horse, do you even know how many people care about you?' I think he knows he's special, sitting there one-on-one with him."

Five months after he shattered his leg moments into the Preakness Stakes, Barbaro no longer looks like the majestic animal whose quicksilver blend of speed and stamina won the Kentucky Derby and made him an overwhelming favorite to capture racing's Triple Crown.

Yet, Barbaro has overcome enormous odds thanks to some of the most advanced medical care ever given to a horse -- and to a small group of doctors and nurses who have fed, washed, walked and otherwise nurtured him.

When Barbaro arrived at New Bolton, he had massive injuries to his rear right leg -- a fractured cannon, sesamoid and long pastern bone. Most horses would have been euthanized. Instead, a complex, painstaking operation followed that included the insertion of a titanium plate and 27 screws in an effort to stabilize the leg and save his life.

The lower half of his leg remains encased in a large, heavily taped fiberglass cast. His left rear hoof, removed in surgery in July after the onset of a life-threatening case of laminitis, a debilitating inflammation, continues a creeping regeneration that will take at least six more months. A protective boot over the stump recently was replaced by heavy bandages.

Largely confined to a stall in the intensive care unit, the bay colt's battle for life has left visible marks. His muscular frame has atrophied. His left side is scarred from blistering during surgery and a bulbous sore from lying down when he couldn't stand. When he is led out for daily late-afternoon grazing, he lurches gingerly. Still, the staff at New Bolton is hopeful.

"He was a tremendous physical specimen," said Dean Richardson, the chief surgeon who performed the surgery the day after Barbaro broke down and has shepherded his recovery. "For all his problems, he's in excellent physical condition."

    An Unforeseen Buzz

DeFazio, who grew up in Kennett Square and went to camps at New Bolton as a child, was watching the Preakness on television the afternoon of May 20 when she saw Barbaro pull up at Pimlico Race Course. "I thought, 'Oh, my gosh, it's over, and it's going to be devastating for our community, especially since I live" near Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, she said.

DeFazio, 27, works the midnight to 5 a.m. shift at New Bolton every other week. She was scheduled to work that night. After the race ended, DeFazio took a nap -- missing further coverage of the tragedy on the evening newscasts -- then got ready for work. When she arrived at New Bolton at 10 p.m., she learned that the horse in her care would be Barbaro.

"When I got in and saw him, I was just awestruck," she said. "He looked like an athlete in his prime. I half wanted to cry and half was excited. You didn't know how to explain it: He's a horse -- one of our patients -- but he's Barbaro, and he won the Derby, and he's all over the news, and he's right in front of me, and I need to make sure he makes it through the night."

Much of the country also was fixated on Barbaro's plight. While many people just wanted to see the Derby winner survive, others debated whether he was only being saved for a chance to earn millions in stud fees. The Jacksons, who had never seen one of their horses suffer a serious injury, said they would have gone to the same great lengths for even the lowliest gelding.

The first few weeks of Barbaro's stay were extremely hectic at New Bolton, one of the two top equine clinics in the country, as television trucks filled the parking lot and reporters camped for days in the hospital lobby.

"It took some getting used to," said Kasey McCafferty, 27, a nurse in the neo-natal intensive care unit. "When you came in the driveway, you had to show your ID. We've had other big stories, but nothing that continued on for so long."

Even now, the hospital lobby remains crowded with giant get-well cards covered with children's signatures. Care packages arrive daily with cookies, chocolates and treats for the staff and carrots for their famous patient.

"It's kind of odd because we've gotten used to it now, but it's very surreal," said Liberty Getman, a third-year resident physician who fills in for Richardson when he is elsewhere. "You can't go anywhere wearing a New Bolton shirt. You can't go to the grocery store or anywhere without being stopped and asked how he is. When you leave here, it becomes more obvious."

The intensive care unit has eight stalls with wooden doors and cinderblock walls. Five are used for neo-natal care in the spring, when most thoroughbred foals are delivered, and Richardson said "it is totally jam-packed" at that time. Now, however, in the fall, it is cool and quiet. Barbaro has his own stall in a corner.

The building has a carefully monitored room temperature and people must wear designated scrubs and coveralls and dip their shoes in a disinfectant wash upon entering and exiting.

Richardson or, more often, Getman, checks on Barbaro each day at 6 a.m. to see how he got through the night and to change his bandages. Four times a day, nurses feed him alfalfa, grass, hay and grain enriched with supplements. They monitor vital signs twice daily and give him antibiotics for his left foot, which, though not infected, remains an open wound.

Barbaro is groomed every day and receives visitors, his extended human family. Gretchen Jackson brings freshly cut grass from her nearby farm in West Grove. Trainer Michael Matz visits regularly. Richardson occasionally allows Matz into the stall to groom Barbaro and apply front bandages. Matz wraps the legs just as he did when the horse was an undefeated 3-year-old with Triple Crown potential. Edgar Prado, his jockey, makes it down from New York from time to time.

The highlight of the horse's day comes when Richardson leads him outdoors to graze.

At night, the lights are dimmed and Barbaro and the other I.C.U. residents receive periodic checks. The Derby winner rarely stirs, Richardson said. "He's a good sleeper."

    A Model Patient, Mostly

Like many top-class racehorses, Barbaro is alert and inquisitive. On a recent afternoon, he flirted with a cow penned at the hospital. Barbaro only backed away when his new playmate attempted to administer a slobbering bovine lick to his face.

"He has a lot of personality," Richardson said. "Sometimes he's a firebrand, jumping up and down and trying to rip your head off, and sometimes he's very sweet. He's very complete."

Barbaro has gained respect at the hospital for his perseverance, though he has at times drawn the line. He loathed the masseuses brought in to work muscles that were knotted because of a lack of exercise. He fussed and bit and threatened until they decided to leave him alone.

"He's like a crotchety old man in a hospital," DeFazio said. "You come in with the medicines, and he says, 'What are you doing in here?' He makes faces at you. I wouldn't say he's cranky, but mouthy."

Richardson, who early on said the chances of Barbaro's survival were no better than 50-50, continues to be cautious about his recovery. "You've still got a long way to go to know whether he'll grow a foot that will allow him to be a stallion or live in a field," he said. "We're better than I thought we'd be in early July when he foundered, but it brings you back to earth when you think about it every day."

No figures have been released on the cost of his treatment the past five months, but it reportedly has run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Although Barbaro's racing career is over and his ability to stand at stud is uncertain, he has been bringing in money -- for the hospital. Even before he had arrived, New Bolton administrators had begun to compile a wish list for its future.

The hospital, Executive Director Corrine Sweeney said, has been delivering "21st century medicine in a 20th century facility." Now there is the Barbaro Fund, which began with an anonymous donor pledging $500,000 and has raised approximately $1.2 million. The money will go toward the prevention and cure of laminitis, medicine and new equipment.

"It will immediately benefit the patients," Sweeney said. "No one wanted this tragedy to occur, but once it did occur an awful lot of good things happened."

And they continue to happen to Barbaro, the odds-defying patient who happens to be a star.

"I will be able to look back," McCafferty said, "and say to my children and grandchildren, 'I worked with Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner.' "

Here is the most effective way to take action during this crucial and very critical two-week period beginning on Monday, December 4, 2006:

Please ask her to contact her colleague in the Senate, incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (now the Senate Minority Leader) and ask him to urge outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to bring this bill to the floor for a vote before adjournment.
Nancy Pelosi has the right to say that the House has already voted on this bill, passed it with 263 voted and consequently, does not want to have to deal with this issue again next year. ask her to get involved this way.

    REPOST: Any thoughts?

Try this one. Massage it to your liking!

    Dear Senator
Regarding Bill S.1915! This anti-horse slaughtering bill must be passed. The American people have spoken. Every poll taken across the country has shown overwhelming support for a ban on horse slaughtering. Congress passed H.R. 503 by a huge margin. Get the politics out of it! These animals are tortured and mis-treated. The facts are in and well documented. I urge you to read Senator Mary Landrieu’s letter addressed to Senator Bill Frist which supports, in part, this statement.
The American public has been in the dark about this issue. No more! As the facts have surfaced, more groups will form and lobby elected officials until legislation is passed to end the horse slaughtering. As a proud member of Fans Of Barbaro I can assure you as our group expands in numbers and we continue to educate the public on what was formerly known as “America’s Dirty Little Secret,” elected officials will spend a vast amount of time on this issue. And it should not be an issue for one simple reason: Dignity! Every living creature on our planet has the right to die in dignity. The documented proof of horse slaughtering shows inhumane treatment resulting in a disgraceful lack of dignity. America needs to step up! Horse slaughtering is not what America is! We are a nation of compassion. And the next step in our moral progression as a nation, as a species, will come when the slaughterhouses are shut down.
In closing, our species have been given many gifts. We have the ability to grow morally, we have the ability to grow intellectually. We have been charged with the responsibility of caring for this planet and all that is here because we can. Combined, these gifts mean we are responsible for the protection and nurturing of life, not killing it! Horse slaughtering is a gross abuse of the gifts we have been given. The time is now to take a step forward to live up to what we can be as a species and to fulfill our role as the greatest nation on earth, The United States of America!

I have a few of these. Put the senator's name at the top, sign it at the bottom. The very last line, under my name I put:
"And thank you for serving America!"
    Hope this helps!
    Daryl!

I have finished all my morning calls and emails to our list so I am calling a list I have of southern Senators.

Senators Nelson ( Fla.) and Pryor of Arkansas asked for my zip code and sounded dismissive when I didn't have one for their states. So just a thought , have a zipcode ready when calling other states. Some do ask.

Oh Daryl, thank you sooo much! I wasn't sure if I should ask for a copy of a letter from someone. I don't expect anyone else to do my work but I'm very limited on time here at work for any thing other than business.

Thank you again Daryl. I will be copying and pasting like crazy now.

70 Horses Seized, Some Dead, And Marland Farm

    By DAVID DISHNEAU
    Associated Press Writer

SHARPSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Animal control authorities have seized a 35-acre farm, saying they found dozens of horses dead or dying from illness and maltreatment.

No charges had been filed against the owner of the farm, but authorities were treating the property as a crime scene, said Paul Miller, executive director of the Humane Society.

Authorities were sent on Saturday to investigate reports of a dead horse at Windrinker Farm, near the Antietam National Battlefield. They found more than 70 horses in various stages of poor health, plus the mostly skeletal remains of at least five other horses.

About 20 of the horses were sent to facilities throughout the region for further care, and one of them later died, said Miller, who also serves as a Howard County animal control officer.

Windrinker Farm owner Barbara P. Reinken, 61, denied mistreating the horses but conceded she had more than she could handle.

"The only thing I had wrong, I had too many horses, that's all," Reinken, a registered nurse, told The Associated Press Sunday.

Neighbors told the AP that dozens of horses at a time would sometimes get loose and graze in yards, fields and orchards. Bonnie Holmes said she called the Humane Society last month when as many as 30 horses got out.

"I'm so happy to see they're being taken out of here," Holmes said.

Miller said investigators found little feed on the farm except pasture and volunteers brought in bales of hay for the horses.

    ALSO, Please contact:
Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist (TN)
    (202) 224-3344
    Fax: (202) 228-1264

Senate Minority Leader, Harry Reid (NV)
    (202) 224-3542
    Fax: (202) 224-7327

Senate Majority Whip, Mitch McConnell (KY)
    (202) 224-2541
    Fax; (202) 224-2499

In addition, please contact both the Republican & Democratic sponsors of S.1915 and ask them to please work to get this to the floor before adjournment:
    Senator John Ensign (R-NV)
    (202) 224-6244
    Fax: (202) 228-2193

    Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
    (202) 224-5824;

Making calls while waiting for update, and wanted to repost this:

From sharonlynn's post at December 4, 2006 7:46 AM, which appears near the very end of the last batch of comments; and from a couple of mine on the same topic; want to repost here and now for maximum exposure.

    [excerpt from Sharon's post]
Thank you fellow Fans of Barbaro who commented to my story. I got us a start, we got to keep it going so people can be aware. I asked the editor to please keep it running until we get the bill passed. It's up to you guys and those who do a google search. Thanks C J. for keeping it going.
Link is up in Alex's updates. [note from CJ: here is the ULR, will someone pls make blue; the link is in Alex's update 1124]

Here's some of what I posted previously re this:

Respectfully suggesting that many of us go to the letter linked by Alex up top, and add your comments below as well. Many voices - reminds me of that wonderful Dr. Seuss classic, "Horton Hears a Who," which was made into a powerful animated TV special that I will never forget. Anybody else remember that one? Our whole Barbaro Nation phenomenon reminds me of that concept, actually. Many voices.
    * * *
Friendly reminder - please add your comment to Sharon Crumb's great anti-slaughter opinion letter published the other day in the Wallowa County Chieftain, blue-linked in Alex's update 1124 up top. Apparently as long as people keep commenting (space below letter), they will keep it online. I was checking to see if mine was printed (it was) and then saw a number of comments from FOB's and other names I didn't recognize; seems like ALL are pro-S1915 (anti-slaughter). Thanks to Carole Shaw, Cora, Otherlyn, Lorraine, Mary, Jo Edwards, Margaret, Dawn, Julie B, don't know what other commenters are FOBs - ALL deserve a big THANK YOU for your well-chosen and moving words.

This is an excerpt from one of the Comments, posted Dec. 1 by Charmaine Jens; contains some specific info that is really compelling, that I hadn't heard before.

Horses are acquired for slaughter without disclosure from the buyer, contributing to both consumer fraud, and horse theft. Many of these horses are faithful & trusting pets, whose owners unknowingly sell their horses at auctions to killer buyers, unaware of what their fate is. Such was the case of Kojak, the noble white Lipizzaner who was abandoned by his owners at the stable where he was kept, only to find himself at a cattle auction to be bought by killer buyers & sent to slaughter -- there are only 3,000 Lippizan's left in the entire world! Thankfully, he was saved by a loving family thru a series of emails between individual's in Colorado & California in an effort to save him before being purchased by killer buyers. And Jill Henneberg, USET 1996 Olympic Silver Medallist, who said, "I bought Nirvana for $600, her meat price, and she took me all the way to the Olympics. I won the medal for my country on a slaughter horse. I wouldn't take a million dollars for her today."

Really puts the kibosh on the argument that the slaughtered are unusable and infirm, doesn't it!
[end of exceprts from my posts re sharonlynn's letter]

Thanks for the thanks, Sharon - and I am still "keeping it going" with THIS post!

    #########
Faye - thanks for your wonderful report [posted December 3, 2006 11:09 PM] about your reconnection with horses due to Barbaro and this site, and I am KVELLING MIT NACHAS about your impending adoption of those two wonderful MHR horses, General, who we've heard about before, and Zamara [f/k/a Chika] the TB mare who was rescued in Oregon; as Stephanie's hubby Rob says, between the two of them, they have one good eye! REPOST!

Eddie Kilroy is willing to read our emails on the air. Would you consider giving him permission to read your beautiful piece "Please Come Back For Me" today as he rallies his listeners to call their senators? If so, please email it to him. I think it would be very effective in getting some people to the phone who might be sympathetic but not yet committed to making the calls. Thanks for all you do!

I have contacted all the important ones on Shelley and Deb's post.. working on my State..

Need some calls to Voinovich if some have time to do so, posted both numbers below:

    Voinovich, George V.- (R - OH)

This is a simple point, but if we get switched to voicemail, we need to remember to have the first words out of our mouths be, I am calling IN SUPPORT OF S. 1915. So that an aide who is not listening to whole messages doesn't tally us onto the wrong side of the issue. This is especially important this week, since the pro-slaughter people are making lots of calls.

    THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE

As we all know, all of our efforts to pass S1915 are culminating in these final days of 2006...

I WOULD LIKE TO ISSUE A CHALLENGE TO ALL FOBs to use the contact information on our lists and GET IN TOUCH WITH THESE SENATORS...

THIS IS SO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT...We have come so far and worked so hard. NO ONE HAS WORKED HARDER OR BEEN MORE FOCUSED THAN THE MEMBERS OF THIS BOARD. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU has made it a point to see that this legislation is passed. That is something we all can be PROUD of.

So I am ISSUING THIS CHALLENGE...THAT WE SPEND EVERY LAST WANING BREATH OF THIS YEAR IN DOING ALL THAT WE CAN TO LET THEM KNOW WE ARE HERE AND WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL S1915 BECOMES THE LAW OF THE LAND.

EVERYONE OF YOU MATTERS...through each FAX, each EMAIL,each PHONE CALL...one step at a time... thus building a coalition of those who will not stop UNTIL THE SLAUGHTER ENDS...

THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE...LET US REDOUBLE OUR EFFORTS AND ANSWER THIS CHALLENGE TO DRIVE OUR POINT HOME...S1915 MUST PASS...

WE CANNOT LOOK BACK AND WONDER IF WE LEFT OUT A SINGLE CALL OR FAX OR EMAIL...

    WE CAN DO THIS!

Barbaro - Big, Beautiful, Baby Barbaro,
Since the comments and forums will soon be gone I wanted to tell you once again how much I love you, and will continue to pray for you. You are a champion of champions! I pray God gives you a long, pain free, wonderful life. How awesome it would be if one day I would get to meet you in person!!

It's really quite amazing all that you have accomplished over the last 6 months, plus. You have saved the lives of many other horses, and changed the lives of thousands people. You've brought people together who may never have met. Brought about so many positive changes in the horse world, as well as the world in general.

Because of you Barbaro, and because of the TWR site and Alex, I met another amazing horse named "Sir Roula", aka, "General". I owned horses many years ago, and have managed to ride off and on over the years, but never thought I would own horses again. Many know who "General Sir Roula" is from my previous postings - the 17 year old blind race horse that had been badly abused, left blind and starving. He is now being loving cared for - and guess what, I'm even riding him. He trusts me, and is lovely under saddle.

Then came the horses from the Oregon auction that arrived at MHR a few weeks ago. There was "Chika", also a TB racehorse, blind in one eye. She's a 7 year old dapple grey mare. I felt the tugs on my heart to adopt her. So believe it or not, I am a horse owner again. I rode her for the first time last week.

I wasn't looking for a horse, never dreamed I would have them again. If I had been looking, I would have been looking for a black Arabian. But God had other plans, he brought these two precious souls into my life for me to love and take care of. So now I am actually looking for a place to rent where I can have them in my own back yard.

So Barbaro, I just wanted to thank you, you changed my life. You've brought new friends into my life. You've taught me many lessons. I thank your mom and dad, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, and all who cared enough to give you the chance at life. I thank all the awesome people in your life, the list is long. They are all heros along with you.

And Alex, I also thank you, for without this board, none of this would have happened. I know you've put up with alot of ugliness, and don't blame you one bit for ending it. I will continue to check on Barbaro daily - thank you for still making that info available.
I pray for you too, that you will have a long, healthy, prosperous life. May God bless you beyond your wildest dreams.
    Hugs!

Pelosi is second! She's a mighty powerful voice. "Don't make me have to repeat these efforts!!!" Super strategy!

Then the rest of the the list. And then all of it again! Keep SLAMMING!

Here's the email I sent to Rep. Pelosi, if anyone is looking for a template.

RE: Senate Bill 1915, Horse Slaughter Ban

    Dear Madame Speaker-Elect,

Earlier this year you supported and voted for the House version of SB 1915, which was HR 503.

As you know, SB 1915 has been tied up in committee for several months, and time is short. Every week thousands of horses are stolen, sold and bought under false pretenses, and slaughtered for human consumption overseas while this legislation languishes in committee.

Please contact your colleagues in the Senate, including Senator Harry Reid, and ask him to urge outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to bring this bill or HR 503 to the floor for a vote before adjournment.

As Speaker-Elect, you have the authority to remind the Senate leadership that the House has already voted on this bill, passed it with 263 votes, and consequently, the House does not want to have to deal with this issue again next year. The House vote reflects the will of the voting public.

Please help get this legislation voted on and passed this term. Polls consistently show the overwhelming majority of Americans oppose horse slaughter for human consumption and want it stopped.

    Thank you.

    Your name here

I just emailed Eddie Kilroy. I focused on the first-time callers, and described how simple the process of calling is. I hope he will read my email on the air, to reassure people who may worry that calling will be scary!

I happened to address the zipcode issue in my email to Eddie's listeners. Here's what I said about that:

"If they ask for your zipcode, give it, say you are not from the senator's state, but that the horses in your state are affected, so it is a national issue, and you hope that the senator will help move the bill. Very easy!"

(I ALWAYS give my zipcode when asked.)

    Thanks Alex for the updates..

Just noticed the following article on Comcast.net. (not to take away from the calling in to Senators, etc.,)

Md. Farm Seized; Sick, Dead Horses Found

SHARPSBURG, Md. - Animal control authorities have seized a 35-acre farm, saying they found dozens of horses dead or dying from illness and maltreatment.

Miller said investigators found little feed on the farm except pasture, and volunteers brought in bales of hay for the horses.

Let's all say a prayer for them...

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for getting on board with Eddie Kilroy. I don't know what hours he is on air. I hear him 5AM PST but he will get the emails and the more the merrier.
I'll be listening again tomorrow AM to hear what he has to say. If you have Direct TV Willie's Place is channel 811. Anyone who may still want to email Eddie, remind him that tomorrow is the HSUS National Call Day. Maybe he will extend his courtesy another day.
Thanks again to the greatest family.

    FOBs:
This will be a fairly long post but it is an important one. Two and one-half weeks ago I visited Sen. Norm Coleman's (Mn) office in St. Paul. I asked for the aide on S.1915. The lady e-mailed him in D.C. with my phone # and request that he call me back to discuss the bill. Since then I called many times, no response. This a.m. I called again. The gal knew who I was and I firmly told her no more vm box. I told her of my intentions and in part quoted the following letter.

    Dear Mr. Hickey:
Two and one-half weeks ago I visited Senator Coleman’s office in St. Paul. I explained the reason for my visit and asked if there was a specific person who was assigned to S.1915, the anti-horse slaughtering bill. I was told you were the contact. The person I talked to e-mailed you as I was talking with her. The date of my visit and e-mail sent to you was November 13, 2006! The e-mail contained my phone number and a request to contact me. In response to not hearing from you I called you November 18th and left a voice mail message. Still no response. I have called you four additional times.
Working for Senator Coleman you represent him and, possibly, his actions. If I am to fall on deaf ears from his aides then I must assume I will fall on deaf ears to him. I am an American citizen! I am a lifelong resident of Minnesota. I supported and voted for Mr. Coleman when he was mayor of St. Paul. I supported and voted for him as U.S. Senator. I have a voice and stance on S.1915 and I want, no demand, that I be heard. The senator and all on his staff work for the American people. How dare you ignore my repeated requests, as stated in my voice mails, for information regarding the senator’s position on this bill, and if he has any concerns about supporting it.
Your continued silence promotes the following action on my behalf.
    1. I am writing a letter to Senator Coleman on your lack of response and my feelings about that
inaction. Please trust that this will be done and that letter will see his hands.
    2. I am posting this letter on a website that Fans Of Barbaro, a nationwide group of people who are fighting for S.1915, can see how government officials ignore the right of the American people to be heard.
    Daryl Smoliak
    Proud U.S. and Minnesota citizen
    Proud member of
    Fans Of Barbaro!

He called me back. He was very nice. Lesson one: don't take guff from people who work for us! I will stress again he was nice and informative. I asked if the senator had any concerns. He said he, and other senators, are questioning if the bill passes, what's next, chickens, etc? I gave him my answer, and I believe I satisfied him because we talked about wording on the bill that could say, "for horses only." Good start. Then I asked him about the toxins in horsemeat and the fact the USDA knows there is a problem and they are, in fact, experimenting on 42 horses to find a way to make horsemeat safe. He said he heard something about the study, but that was it. So here's the problem we face, to a large degree: the aides and senators, for many reasons, don't have all the facts. It's up to us to educate them. Otherwise, they go into sessions with unanswered questions. So how can you vote in favor of something if you have doubts in your mind? Sharon Crumb and I are e-mailing Mr. Hickey all the USDA documents. Senator Coleman voted last year in favor of horse protection legislation. This is the kind of info that could garner his vote. He is a good and compassionate man. How can you keep the horse slaughtering industry alive when you know there are toxin problems in horsemeat?
He also said Fans Of Barbaro really know what they are doing, or something to that effect. He said the bill was getting a lot support from us and we are doing a good job. He also said it was going to be tough to get this to floor this session. Well, maybe with the info on toxins the senators could see this issue in a whole different light. Anyway, this is why it's important to get to the aide who is assigned to S.1915. My mistake was not getting tough earlier. That won't happen again.
Please add Senator Coleman to your call list. Ask if you should leave a support message for David Hickey or if she will pass it on.
    Senator Norm Coleman - 202-224-5641
David Hickey - aide assigned to S.1915
    Daryl!

The picture that inspired me last night to really get busy after crying buckets and buckets of tears is little Dabloon lying on the ground starving. He was rescued, thank God. I sent the picture with my message to my Senators. It is located on the Discussion Board under "911 Alert Hourglass is almost empty." Post 2904.7 from Indyonline. I also gave copies to my husband to fax at work. The pictures tell everything! Keep calling, faxing and emailing--for all the other 7 month foals that will end up at the slaughter houses.

Maybe if I just pretend I forgot what the backers wanted, they'll forget it ever happened. (Yea, right!) Do have to have the people's votes, after all. Susan E. and everyone:
Here's the latest update on the USDA horse experiments. Sharon Crumb has been all over this.

Research Project: Establishment of Serological Reference Standards and Validation of a Digestion Method for Trichinella Larvae in Horsemeat
    Location: Animal Parasitic Diseases

    Project Number: 1265-32000-076-01
    Project Type: Trust

    Start Date: Feb 01, 2005
    End Date: Feb 01, 2007

    Objective:
The International Commission on Trichinellosis (ICT) provides science based recommendations to national and international regulatory agencies and directly influences international trade agreements, control programs and food safety initiatives. At its 2004 meeting, the ICT stated that the major impediment to harmonizing serological surveillance for trichinellosis on a worldwide basis is the lack of standardized reference sera for different species of animals, and it pledged to work towards development of these standards. The data collected from both domestic animals and wildlife surveillance activities are trade barriers. The major problem with serological tests is the lack of standardization among the different tests used in various countries. Countries with poorly operating tests may make inadequate food safety decisions or enjoy export privileges based on false negative results. USDA, in collaboration with CFIA and EU researchers, will develop defined serological reference standards for use in swine and horses on a worldwide basis. Establishment of International Serological Reference Standards according to OIE guidelines for use in surveys and trace-back investigations, and validation and harmonization of Trichinella digestion assay for horsemeat will be accomplished.

    Approach:
Groups and doses: A total of 42 horses will be used. Three groups of 12 horses each will be orally inoculated with 1000,5000 or 10,000 Trichinella spiralis larvae respectively. Six uninoculated horses will be kept as controls. Slaughter schedule: Four horses from each dose group & two controls will be slaughtered at 3,6 and 12 months p.i. The control horses killed at 3 months will provide a source of negative tissue for digestion test validation work. Determination of larval load in tissues: Representative bulk muscle samples (100g) from up to 4 sites will be digested from each horse. (14 horses x 12 digests each = 168 digests on site at the first slaughter date). Tissues for digestion test validation: Horses from 3- month slaughter date will provide infected & negative tissues. Larval load will be determined as previously described and tongue, diaphragm, masseter and neck (or other) muscle containing

Hello to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

THIS IS A RED ALERT! RED ALERT!!!!!!
I have just talked to a very knowledgeable aide in Senator Patty Murray's Everett, WA, field office! She told me that the 109th Congress will only be working til THIS FRIDAY! So unless there is an extension of another week, THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2006 will be the last day of the 109th Congress! This means we need to enlist as many people as we can to make S1915 a done deal and slam dunk the Senators BEFORE the 8th!

However, if S1915 is not voted on, it is NOT the end of the line. It just means we have to put the heat on the new members as well as the veteran members of Congress to get the bills voted on. The quickest way to accomplish that will be to back either measure, as the text of both bills is identical. We are absolutely NOT back at first base or square one because of this. This means we will have to work hard when Congress starts up for its 110 Session on January 4, so contrary to popular belief, our efforts will NOT be in vain! So for now, let's concentrate on this week, and we will cross this new bridge when the time comes.

Best of luck to all of us and each other. We have a challenge ahead of us! THINK POSITIVE!

This has probably been mentioned and I apologize if this is a repeat.

Today is the first day I have called a lot of Senator's offices. I just talked to Scott in Senator Ensign's office. He told me that the Senator is working really hard to get more sponsorship and encouraged me to call my own Senators again. He even told me their names! That was so sweet of him. So what that I already knew their names--he was very kind.

I feel so stupid cause I hardly know anything about the issues. All I can barely say is

Help get this bill to the floor and vote to end all horse slaughtering.

But at least now I'm trying.

    Dear Senator Frist:

As the Senate session approaches the end of the year, we are fighting a difficult war, to put a stop to the slaughtering of horses in the United States for human consumption overseas. We are told to deal with the facts and not compassion because politicians don't care about compassion. If anyone would read the facts and see the images of horses in a slaughterhouse, they would understand our compassion, and horse slaughtering would have stopped a long time ago. So, YES, we are COMPASSIONATE about seeing S.1915 pass because of the facts. Your colleagues in the House of Representatives have seen the facts, and whether or not they are compassionate as we are, they have voted overwhelmingly in favor of this Bill.

While politics are being played, horses are being slaughtered. You are an intelligent man and you know the facts. Those politicians that are trying to convince themselves that slaughtering is the humane thing to do are only fooling themselves and showing their true selves to the voters.

We will continue to fight for S.1915 and someone will make a difference. Please be the person that makes a difference. You have the POWER to put S.1915 on the floor. Whether or not the Bill passes or fails, you did your job. You can always look back and say to yourself you did the right thing. Facts have been presented and ignored. Our voices are being ignored.

Please place S.1915 on the floor. The majority of voters aware of slaughtering horses for human consumption are against it and many more will become aware in the coming years of what once was “American’s Dirty Little Secret” and the person who put an end to it. Please be that person.

    Respectfully,

    MARGARET -

    You're doing great.

My parents strongly supports the Bill, but never called any official before. So I told my parents what they needed to say. At first my mom was reading, by the end she was swinging her hips and smiling as she made her calls.

Papa didn't have a smile and at the end he too had a smile on their face.

    Practice makes perfect.

    Margaret
I am so proud of you for making the calls! We really need you!

For Senators Ensign and Landrieu, we have been asked to thank and encourage them to keep moving the bill. I know it may seem like a waste of effort to call senators who are so obviously for the bill, but there are so few senators listed by name on our list, and these two are named, so we know they are very important. Top people in the anti-slaughter movement have advised ShelleyA and DebraWI to pass this request along, so it's best for us to just do this and know that, somehow, it all fits into the strategy.

Again, it is so great that you are making the calls!!

Here's another canned response I got from Frist's office along with my reply.

    Dear Friend:

Thank you for contacting me. After twelve years of proudly representing Tennessee in the United States Senate, I will be retiring from the Senate and returning home at the end of the year. I am proud of the progress, growth and change our country has experienced during this time.

One of the great difficulties of preparing to leave office is recognizing the limited time that is left to address matters of concern to Tennesseans. Therefore, it is with deep regret that I write to inform you that I will not be able to respond directly to your correspondence in the short time remaining.

It has been an honor to represent you in the United States Senate, and I am eternally grateful to the people of Tennessee for entrusting me with the privilege to serve.

    Sincerely,

    William H. Frist, M.D.
    Majority Leader
    United States Senate

    Dear Senator,

As Senate Majority Leader your responsibilities extend beyond the Tennessee state lines. I am once again asking that you recognize the importance of your role in government as well to the American people as a whole.

The anti-slaughter bill, H.R. 503 was overwhelmingly passed by the House earlier this year and clearly states the views of all Americans. As a final testimony to your distinguished career, please get S.1915 to the floor for a vote prior to your departure.

FYI Just got this from Rob Burk at Md Horse Industry- Can someone help- these are some of the 74 horses rescued in Sharsburg, MD....
To all interested parties, the following request was put out by Days End
    Farm Horse Rescue:

Days End Farm Horse Rescue (Lisbon, MD) currently has 20 horses that have
been brought to their farm from an animal control case in Washington County.
Washington County Animal Control is looking for housing for an additional 40
horses. Best case scenario is one place to put them all. Should not be with
other horses as no vaccinations or coggins have been given/taken. Most are
stallions or pregnant mares or the babies. The current animal holders are
willing to lease property if available.

Contact Kathy Schwartz if you are able to assist in any way (ie facility,
    donations, volunteers, etc.).

    ALSO...Please contact:
Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist (TN)
    (202) 224-3344
    Fax: (202) 228-1264

Senate Minority Leader, Harry Reid (NV)
    (202) 224-3542
    Fax: (202) 224-7327

Senate Majority Whip, Mitch McConnell (KY)
    (202) 224-2541
    Fax; (202) 224-2499

In addition, please contact both the Republican & Democratic sponsors of S.1915 and ask them to please work to get this to the floor before adjournment:
    Senator John Ensign (R-NV)
    (202) 224-6244
    Fax: (202) 228-2193

    Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
    (202) 224-5824;

    (202) 225-4965
    Fax: (202) 225-8259; Email: sf.nancy@mail.house.gov

PLEASE START MAKING THESE CALLS IMMEDIATELY....WE CAN'T BE SURE HOW LONG CONGRESS WILL BE IN SESSION....IT'S VERY POSSIBLE THAT WE MAY ONLY HAVE THIS WEEK!!!!

You are so right. It used to be the case that we were the only ones calling the senators, but now that the pro-slaughter people are also calling, we need to be very careful to make sure that the aides understand which side we are on. Sometimes I say "I am FOR the bill. Which means I am AGAINST the slaughter."

The last thing we need is to be put in the wrong column by a confused aide!

    Heather...I'm really sorry about Opie.

I was having a chat with my kids walking to Club the other night and one of them had just lost their dog and was sad. We were swapping our losses and sad stories and I said that's the hardest part of having a pet...they just don't live long enough, and wouldn't it be nice if they could live as long as we did. One little boy suggested I get a tortoise for my next pet because they live til 250, "but you wouldn't be able to throw it a frisbee or a stick"!

It's after 5:00 on the East Coast, but this is a great time to call the local offices of all legislators who are not in the Eastern time zone! That would include Senators Reid, Ensign, and Landrieu, Congresswoman Pelosi, possibly Senators Frist and McConnell? In addition, it is a good time to call the D.C. offices and leave voicemail; and, of course, email programs and fax machines can be contacted any time.

    All,

I just got the following response from Senator Schumer. For some reason I got 3 copies of it, AFTER his standard canned response.
    ____________

Thank you for your letter regarding S. 1915, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. You will be happy to know that I am a co-sponsor of S. 1915. This bill recently passed the House of Representatives, and **I am hopeful it will be debated on the Senate floor soon.**

Throughout my legislative career I have maintained a strong commitment to protecting the rights of animals. I am a co-sponsor of S. 304, the Sportsmanship in Hunting Act which amends the federal criminal code to prohibit knowingly transferring, transporting, or possessing a confined exotic animal for purposes of allowing the killing or injuring of that animal for entertainment or the collection of a trophy.

I was also proud to support the passage of P.L. 106-152, a law banning the interstate trade in "crush videos." Under this law, it is illegal to engage in the interstate commercial distribution of materials depicting animal cruelty, specifically the crushing of small animals by women wearing high-heeled shoes.

In recognition of my efforts on behalf animal rights, last year the Humane Society of the United States awarded my voting record on animal welfare legislation a score of 100%. Although I am proud of the accomplishments made on behalf of animal rights so far, I am aware that there are still many animal welfare issues remaining to be addressed. Rest assured that I remain strongly committed to protecting animal rights.

Again, thank you for contacting me. If my office can be of any assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Lillian Petroff: Welcome back....missed you. Hope you are doing okay now.

Heather: So sorry about little Opie....I kept the prayers and candles going for him 24/7. I guess our Heavenly Father decided it was time for her to go home to our Father's kingdom. I hope Foggy was there to greet her at the Rainbow Bridge.....I know that you are going thru a rough time right now, but I will continue to pray for you and Randy. As per Shelley A. -

    (202) 224-3135
    (202) 224-3344
    Fax: (202) 228-1264

Senate Minority Leader, Harry Reid (NV)
    (202) 224-3542
    Fax: (202) 224-7327

Senate Majority Whip, Mitch McConnell (KY)
    (202) 224-2541
    Fax; (202) 224-2499

In addition, please contact both the Republican & Democratic sponsors of S.1915 and ask them to please work to get this to the floor before adjournment:

    Senator John Ensign (R-NV)
    (202) 224-6244
    Fax: (202) 228-2193

    Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
    (202) 224-5824;
    Fax: (202) 224-9735

Finally, an important addition to your contact list is incoming House Speaker,Nancy Pelosi (CA).

Nancy Pelosi has the right to say that the House has already voted on this bill, passed it with 263 voted and consequently, does not want to have to deal with this issue again next year ask her to get involved this way.

    Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi
    Incoming House Speaker
    (202) 225-4965
    Fax: (202) 225-8259
Email: NANCY PELOSI - E-mail Link
    Non-constitutents: E-Mail: AmericanVoices@mail.house.gov

PLEASE START MAKING THESE CALLS IMMEDIATELY....WE CAN'T BE SURE HOW LONG CONGRESS WILL BE IN SESSION....IT'S VERY POSSIBLE THAT WE MAY ONLY HAVE THIS WEEK!!!!

I VERY much appreciate that he is taking time with these horses. So many trainers either push or feel pushed by owners to run their babies too soon. I think Michael probably trains for good owners.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at December 5, 2006 12:16 AM

JO; Yea, I think it's hard on them too. I wish the Jockey Club would change the way they do ages. Like, instead of having them change ages in the January after they are born (for instance, if a horse is born in April of this year, in Jan he is 1) make it that they turn one the next year (horse born in April 2006 becomes 1 in 2008). I know it sounds goofy, but then at least they would be more grown up. Barbaro was barely three when he won the Derby.

I was so sad to read about the horsefarm owned by a 61 year old registered nurse where there were 70 horses found in various stages of very poor health. Most were starving, about five had already died and another died later today. The Humane Society was called by a neighbor and many of the horses have been sent to various farms for care and many people in the area began bringing hay. The nurse said she couldn't feed them all but had not abused them in any way. Maybe she felt she was rescuing them and it got to be too much for her to manage financially. That is one thought I had anyway.

Good night Big Guy! may the angels watch over you and surround you with healing light and love. Many hugs and smooches on your beautiful nose. The best to everyone at New Bolton and the Jacksons.

I will never forget watching the HR503 vote with this community as long as I live. Always the link of our love of horses, and all animals has been there. It hasn't been perfect, but no group is.

I'm not smart enough to understand much but I'm darn sure of this: What got started here is worth celebrating, and worth continuing on the other side of this chapter and verse. I hope to stay in touch with you guys, for the distance. Please keep the beat & thank you for being true Friends of Barbaro. Who would have thought we would have come so far since that day in May. I will miss this place. Thank you, Alex, for everything. It's good to know ye all.

    Susan in Saratoga,

Great post, I agree with you 100%.

It's gone by so fast. Seems like only yesterday that you brought us the news of Jennys On Radio.

    Hello Barbaro,

Your Fans delivered another day of making you proud! Phones ringing, faxes going and emails being sent all day long by your Fans. Add to that, the Teamwork and communication was phenomenal!

I had a hard time sticking to the task at hand with my day-job! It was wonderful to "Refresh" Tim's site and see all of the communication for the good of the horses.

I'm sure many of your Fans are all cuddled up in their beds right now and tomorrow they will be ready to continue the fight.

Believe in your Fans Barbaro. They're not a group that gives up. Believe Barbaro!

Well, let's grab your blanket. The moon is shining so bright here tonight in Minnesota. It's gorgeous!! I hope you're able to enjoy it as well Honey.

Now please pull your blanket up high on your neck. The night is chilly. Tonight while you're dreaming your sweet dreams, may God let the healing continue and allow strength to carry you through your day tomorrow.

Sleep well Honey. May your dreams tonight become part of your day tomorrow. I love you Barbaro. I will always be here. Good night. XXOOx (You better get used to the "extra one" Honey)

I know some of you don't visit the forum but I saw a great post from our Mary from Ohio I would like to repost here. says so much.. hope this is alright..

    *********
I have mostly stayed quiet these last few weeks as I felt it was best too, but please take a moment to "listen" to me... (I have also been dealing with my mothers health and new health issues with myself) BUT i have been reading and posting some..

There is so much striff and discord lately. In battling cancer for the 2nd time, I have learned to live each day at a time.. You don't know what tomorrow will bring, so you learn to take ONE DAY at a TIME..

I suffer from a lot of lonely and depressing times in the past 3 yrs.. My computer was my only connection to the "outside" world..(as long as it did not act up on me!) but I was still alone and "lost" in a way.. I keep a lot inside, as I also have other "hats" i have to wear taking care of my elderly mother, etc..I have to be the "strong one and not show emotions. But was still maddening to be stuck inside 4 walls and no one to talk to or listen..

BUT in May i stumbled upon a site that was talking about Barbaro (I had watched Barbaro and Brother Derek during their 2 yr old campain)... during the pre KY derby and afterwards.. That site was TWR... then that horrible horrible day. things really took off there..

I was hesitant for a long time to post as I did not feel I had much to offer but I visited every day and so enjoyed what was being Posted. Then I saw a great post I had to respond to, I still remember who it was to this day.. Shelley A. From that time on and sharing in everyone else's love of horses and in Barbaro, I found many many many great "friends", never have met but still I call them friends.. Those people have helped me in so many ways that I can NOT begin to thank them all. You all gave me meaning, joy, concern, support, love and understanding during my chemo time. You brought me out of the darkness and showed me that yes there are people in this world that still care, even "faceless" ones.. Today if I get into my "dark place" as I call it. I know if I need to , there are good, caring people that will be there to let me cry, vent, and be mad as heck and just talk..

I have also been hurt by others on the forum, and let things get to me and cause me grief and sorrow. There have been times when I did not realize it but I also hurt some others and that really hurt me, that is not what I want to be remembered as.. That period was so full of concern for Barbaro's laminitis and the discord that was beginning then on the comments...

It was a good friend I met thru this site (TWR) that "listened" to me, and after much soul searching and crying and being upset and wondering why.how to "fix things", I got a email from one of those people that was hurt by things said. BEFORE I tried to explain things, she said in that letter.. I FORGIVE YOU.. such powerful words.. She is a great and gentle caring soul... I will not say her name but she will know who I am talking about..

So I am going to take those words she said to me.. and pay it forward..

To Those that sent hurtful emails to me. I FORGIVE YOU...

TO those that I may have hurt unintenally by me or from discussions taken from my Yahoo group. Please Forgive me and the others..

Now I have ONE thing to ask of all of you that are fussing, fighting, hurt, upset by things said on this forum or the comments.. Please.. pay it forward, reach out and say I FORGIVE YOU.. I am SORRY.. please forgive me..

Finally.. TO ALEX. I support whatever you decide to do, but THANK YOU for what you gave to all of us.. I shall never ever forget it.. Because of your site and the love of Barbaro.. I found purpose and friends and something to keep my mind off of the treatments, the "dark" place.. YOU SAVED ME.. simple as that.. your site allowed me to reach out and find people that cared, that have the same passion for horses as I do. I don't know where I would be today without your site..

To those that allowed me into your world and hearts. .THANK YOU.. You have helped me beyond words..

I am a person of no monetary value but you and all the others showed me that I can still help, be important and supportive.. That you did not have to have money to help (even though many times I wished I did to help out more)

I am not a big Holiday person.. I have lost soo soo much around this time of year and it is still hard for me.. If I could, I would go and hibernate until the day after christmas.. BUT this song was my dad's favorite song (he has been gone now for 7 yrs) and another good friend I met at cancer treatment place, I lost her a month ago.. I think it will help what is going on. It all can start with YOU.. either here, or on the outside world..

Please take these words into your heart. Do it for The horses, do it for youself.. Pay it forward..

LIFE IS TOO SHORT.. enjoy, share, reach out, love and have peace.

Thank you all for what you have given me.. from the bottom of my heart .. Let it begin with ME.. Join me please......

Let there be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
    With God as our father
    Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
    In perfect harmony.

    Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
    With every step i take
Let this be my solemn vow.
    To take each moment
    And live each moment
    With peace eternally.
Let ther be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.

    (child)
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth

    Hi Daryl!

I was trying to "fly under the radar" tonight knowing you were on the board! But alas, you found me!

If by "working hard" you mean driving the Beer Cart around the course, hey Buddy, I'm there!!

    Daryl,

Are you in Arizona now? Your greeting of "Enjoy the cold in Mn." has me wondering.
Seriously, the golf tournament is something that I will definitely plan on!
Let me know when and how I can help!! You have my email address.
And, thank you for your help and impersonation of a woman! That goes beyond the call of duty, but then, something tells me that you usually do go beyond the call...am I right?!

    VIGIL FOR BARBARO??

FOB's: How about a vigil for this weekend, or a time when people think is best during this busy season. Sunday? It will be a celebration of this message board communuty, too, and a chance to share that special magic once more during a focused vigil. Barbaro has come a long way with a little luck of the Irish, and plenty of good doctoring & stud muffins. He has more healing to go before he walks out of the trailer at Lael Farms. What say you?

Bobby, sweet Velvet Nose, time to tuck you in. Another day has flown by...we're still getting used to cutting back to one update...we're spoiled.

So sleep well and heal. Dream of long, happy, healthy lives for all animals in safe, loving, forever homes. Dream of a strong, healthy hoof for you. And dream of a new site where all your friends can gather to say good morning, and good night, and to celebrate all of your triumphs.

Be careful getting up and down, and no clowning. Have ACN so we can see you for ACD tomorrow!

You will always be the Champ and the Sportsman of the Year. And I'm still going to stand in line to kiss you on your velvet nose.

Good night, love. Good night, Barbaro Nation.

A comment about the SI Sportsman of the Year Award ...

I, too, am very disappointed that this award did not go to Barbaro; I felt certain he would win it for many many reasons, all of which we can expound upon ad infinitum and without hesitation. But that was not to be, for some reason.

However, please do not disparage the winner, Dwyane Wade, unless you know who he is. This young upstart basketball player was the single-handed reason that The Miami Heat won the Basketball Finals in June. He is an incredible team player, very respected and extremely talented. Just because Barbaro did not win is no reason to denigrate the incredible athlete who did win. Once again, it's not Wade's fault that Barbaro didn't win, just as it was not Bernardini's fault that Barbaro wasn't able to continue racing. Please, let's not go down that blind alley again. The votes were not cast by Wade but by sports fans across the nation.

Nothing would have made me happier than to see Barbaro win this award, and I am sad that he did not, but I do not take anything away from the greatness and talent of Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Let's all be true "sportsmen" in acknowledging the winner ...

    Congratulations Dwyane Wade ...

    ACN for Barbaro, fabulous!

Tomorrow is National Call-In Day on S 1915, according to Karen Sussman, president of the International Society of Mustangs and Burros, who put out an appeal on HER website today: "Please take the time to call, as it is critical to 90,000 plus horses that face slaughter yearly." So, FOBs, call tomorrow, too. She posted the same list of senators to contact that we've seen lately on this site. I'll be dialing again tomorrow!

I was so proud to be part of the group of people who donated to TB Friends for their Thanksgiving. You can read the comments Joe made after the visit yesterday with all the goodies - these people, Joe and Cathy, are making a real difference, and it is very poignant to know that they are doing it all on their own. I frankly do not know how they manage - Joe works on neighboring ranches when needed, and his wife's employer (a mainstay for their funding) has instituted a one day a week voluntary layoff, so they have even less than usual.

They have new lovely TB gelding from the track, and his hooves needed trimming when the visitors arrived yesterday. One of the visitors is a shoer/trimmer, so she took him in hand, and Joe says he is gentle enough for kids to ride. Joe whispered to another of the visitors when the gelding let her work with him without a minute's hesitation, and he said, "no one has ever abused his trust".

That is what we are doing - maintaining this trust, for Barbaro, for the Jacksons, for all the horses on the trucks and in the pens. I am so proud of all everyone has done today, and will do tomorrow.

Barbaro's vigil has been every Saturday at 700pm for the past several months - and before that it was every other Saturday at 700. I guess I just like the idea of all of us being on the same page, because I believe there is great power in all of us coming together at the same time. I know most of us pray for him constantly anyway. I would still vote to keep it Saturday at 700.

SI is way too macho a magazine to give the award to a horse. They may see themselves loosing their credibility to so honor a horse, after all a horse is just a "stupid" animal, right?

Hope y'all know I'm being sarcastic when I said "stupid" animal above. Horses, of course, are not in any way stupid, they're very smart. But, this might be what Sports Illustrated thinks.

Even Affirmed when he won the Triple Crown in 1978 did not get the Sportsman of the Year nor Secretariat!

I'M A BIG NBA NUT THOUGH-I CAN NOT REMEMBER THE LAST TIME A TEAM LOST THE FIRST TWO GAMES IN THE NBA FINALS, THEN WENT ON TO WIN 4 CONSECUTIVE STRAIT TO GET THE TITLE, LIKE MIAMI DID.

    Dear Barbaro,

I haven't written to you in a long time, so many others do, I just wanted to ease the traffic jam. You are in my thoughts many times through the day, and your example applies itself to so many facets of living it becomes a bannister over uncertain steps.

If the sound of a pebble striking bamboo opens the Zen mind, surely a horse, a living, striving, creation of God, serves man well, being larger than life.

Barbaro, you struck a chord that resonates in the hearts of thousands, maybe millions of people. Imagine how full the sound if that chord could be heard!

That vibration has touched young and old, brought tears of sadness, hope and joy. We have jumped into the air punching our fists in jubilation with your every victory!

Now we are shaking the halls of power and avarice with the truth of abominable suffering.

Thank you, my wonderful friend, dear Bobby.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans!

Downright COLD in Maine this morning, but it's the season for cold. We had our first snow yesterday - less than an inch, but it's snow! Has it snowed in Pennsylvania yet?

I made my contacts yesterday and will do so again today. I cannot remember the last time I was so passionate about an issue. It feels good. It is something I can do that does not cost me anything but my time. It is the least I can do to honor this horse that has come to mean so much to all of us.

    Off for more Green Mountain.
