Barbaro Updates: 150

updates are now here.

Update 1145: Today (thursday, December 7) is Harry Aleo's 87th birthday. Many on this site have learned much about Mr. Aleo through Lost in the Fog. Many congratulations! For those who want to do something to honor Mr. Aleo's birthday, I am sure he would be delighted with any support for GEVA.

More news from Hong Kong. Sue McMullen sent this e-mail:

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has just issued a release concerning samples from Takeover Target taken prior to his arrival in Hong Kong, indicating what they describe as an 'irregularity'. The statement also says that it is normal practice of the HKJC to obtain such samples from all horses participating in the Club's international races and occasionally they show irregularities, in which case further samples are taken for analysis leading up to the race. So Takeover Target will be subject to further testing with the analysis carried out at HKJC's own racing laboratory.

Let's hope the second test is nagative!

The Daily Racing Form highlights a couple of US-based horses running in Hong Kong on sunday, although neither are running in the Vase or the Sprint (the rest of the card is also very strong): U.S. hopefuls are second fiddles in Hong Kong.

Finally, Sue McMullen sent me a couple of pictures to post, one of Ouija Board, one of Dean on Collier Hill: Hong Kong Vase contender Pics.

Update 1144: A quick update from Hong Kong ahead of sunday's Hong Kong Vase. I just spoke to Dean McKeown, Collier Hill's jockey. The weather this morning (thursday morning / wednesday evening in the US) in Hong Kong is pretty humid so they did not work Collier Hill, but let him gallop a pretty strong six furlongs. Dean is very happy with him. I asked Dean what the ground was like, he said they had had a little rain, but the ground was on the fast side of good, which suits Collier Hill. The plan now is to work Collier Hill about a half mile tomorrow. Dean also let me know that Ouija Board looks good. He assumes she won't be doing too much work before the race, she's obviously very fit.

I asked Dean if he had ridden in Hong Kong before. He actually had a contract to ride there back in 1992.

Update 1143: It has been a month since Barbaro has had his cast removed. Another small milestone. Dr. Richardson has received an award for his openness with the media, and consequently enhancing thoroughbred horseracing: Richardson Named TPA's Big Sport of Turfdom Award Winner.

Update 1142: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). Mrs. Jackson left a voice mail as she was leaving from her visit (just after 12 pm).

I was showing someone around Fair Hill. It is fun to do, especially as Fair Hill compares to a typical person's frame of reference, a race track. As part of the "tour" we visited Graham Motion's barn. I did not realize, but Better Talk Now is still here. He was out grazing in the paddock, looking nice and relaxed after his 2006 exploits. They were considering him for this weekend's Hong Kong Vase (against Ouija Board and Collier Hill) but opted to give him a longer break so he can be fresh for his campaign next year. He's a star!

Well, that was funny. It locked up on me just as I posted. Turns out Alex was "turning the page". LOLOL

Let's try that again:

SusanE

I had a similar problem in another Senator's office a week or so ago. I called again and asked to speak to a supervisor. The person I had trouble with was an intern that she "had already had concerns about having on the phone".

She listened and was nice about it. She even told me a few things that had happened with this person.

Don't let it drop. They are not getting paid to be rude to us. Those people do have supervisors.

Lord God, wrap S1915 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. Compel each member to immediately move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all. I have a suggestion -- since Frist's office is unwilling to take calls other than voice mail, and since our issue is too urgent for voice mail, what if we tie up his fax line after we leave voice mails?

Doing my part w/ the fax idea.. here is my today's fax to Sen Frist.

December 6, 2006

To: The Hon. Senator William Frist

Re: S. 1915 American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act

Please bring to vote this week.

Dear Senator Frist:

"I will work with all of my colleagues, whether or not they support this bill, to bring this legislation to the floor for debate ... surely the world's greatest deliberative body can rely on argument in the light of day." [8/29/05, Senator Bill Frist re S. 2590]

If ever there was an emotional and logical argument for the democratic process, your words re S. 2590 were an inspiration. They are as relevant today as they were last August.

The vast majority of Americans want horse slaughter, ?America?s Dirty Secret? to end this year, not next year when the Congress changes from red to blue. If the clock runs out on S.1915 this week, thousands of horses, including tens of thousands of stolen animals, will suffer for the delay. The will of the people was heard in the House in September with the passage of HR 503. Now all eyes are on the Senate.

You hold a powerful position in your service to your constituents. This is an opportunity to use that power to honor our community values in your last days in office. Bringing S. 1915 to the Senate floor is an opportunity for the Republican Party to demonstrate bi-partisan leadership at a time when this country needs to see our representatives producing real, tangible results.

We eat beef, chicken, lamb, and fish here. We don?t eat horses, dogs or cats. Neither do the residents of the National Zoo. It?s as simple as that.

Most of the 40,000 US horses stolen each year are sold to slaughter. This is a cruel and heartless violation of individual property rights.

Tainted Meat: Our horses are not raised and regulated as are food-producing animals. They routinely receive medications both by veterinarians and horse owners that are banned from food-producing animals and are labeled ?Do not use in horses intended for food.? No American horses are intended for food but many are unfortunate enough to end up as food. We need to protect the security of our foreign markets by keeping known carcinogens out of the food supply.

Argument: What will we do with the extra horses? We?ve already absorbed hundreds of thousands of horses a year since 1993 when over 300,000 were slaughtered in 14 plants. We won?t have to find new homes for stolen horses, either.

Argument: We won?t be able to eat beef, either. In 1960, I remember hearing if a Catholic, John Kennedy, was elected President, we?d have school on Saturday. That wasn?t true, either.

American taxpayers are now picking up the tab to police a foreign industry that pays next to nothing in Federal Income Tax while routinely violating USDA transport rules, environmental regulations and whose own representative admitted before Congress in August doesn?t even bother to check if the horses it ?processes? are stolen. We have better things to do with our tax dollars than that!

Please release S. 1915 to the floor for open debate. Let?s let Barbaro and his kind live out their days in peace. Let?s put an end to ?America?s Dirty Secret.? It?s time we showed some backbone to the world by protecting an American icon from French restaurants that boast, ?Eat an American Horse.?

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you, and wish you and your family all the best in the future.

Respectfully,

Susan E,
Sorry to hear that. We have a corrupt congress as far as I am concerned. We need a revolution of sorts, they wouldn't get away with all this if the people didn't let them! This group should not disband if S1915 doesn't pass, go to Cora's site to re-group.

Frist has sold out! He is holding back important legislation that would save thousands of horses, ponies, mules, burros lives, he is no better than the worker at the slaughter house! I am disgusted!

I am told that our chances will improve with the new congress in '07 so am looking forward to that!

Thanks Alex for the updates. Special thanks to Mrs. Jackson for all she is and gives to Bobby and to us.

Designgirl,
Your suggestion went on to the next page when it got changed, so please post again if you feel inclined, thought it was a good idea.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at December 6, 2006 7:15 PM

For anyone that doesn't read Joe's daily journal entries over at the TBFriends site, I strongly recommend reading his entry today. At first blush, it is a reminder, if one were needed, of how grateful we all must be that the Jackson's have honored their committment to Barbaro. That the Jackson's love Barbaro is clear, but the simple predicate is that they know their obligations and they honor them. Would that the same could be said for some others in the industry. Joe's entry today is a reminder that, in addition to working for the anti-slaughter bill and for horse rescue, the overarching challenge is to force the industry to give up that "penny on a buck" that Joe speaks about today. Perhaps the "Barbaro effect" has room for yet one more challenge.

Posted by: Ann (Maryland) at December 6, 2006 7:15 PM

Since we're al telling our disappointing Frist stories, I'd like to add mine.
Once again yesterday I reached William - the aide, and was made to feel that the moment he hung up the phone my call was forgotten about. I seriously doubt he made a note of the call.

It wasn't that much better at Pelosi's or Reid's office either.

REPOST

FOBs

I know I posted an idea for a "plan b" a couple of days ago, and I, like all of you am calling, faxing, emailing and praying that this bill will be heard, voted on, and passed this week.. . BUT -

The thing is this. . . half of Wednesday is already gone and there are no signs that the anti-slaughter bill will even make the floor. What do you guys think about maybe adding to what we normally say when we call. Something like: since it's looking like this bill is being purposely left out of this session, we would like to respectfully ask the Senate if they could AT LEAST put a stop to the sale for, transport of and slaughtering of American horses until the senate DOES review and vote on the bill. This should not be a stretch, in light of the facts that: the House passed it by a majority and its companion bill for the senate has so much support from this session's senators. If "there's no time" to address this bill (or no willingness on the part of Senator Frist), PLEASE at least allow a vote on the temporary stop to all of this until legislation can be brought to the floor, discussed, voted on and passed permanently. Can't we contact the office of the Sponsors and co-sponsors of this bill to ask them to request a temporary stop to this?

What do you guys think?

I have the feeling that Mr. Frist may have the interests of the Tennessee Walking Horse Assoc. in mind rather than the entire Nation that he represents as Majority Leader. It makes me wonder if the wording about soreing were removed, maybe we would have had a better chance with him. Just a thought....

After reading that, no one will ever convince me that horses are treated well on the track...just like the Greyhounds. Same place, same race, same money. If they don't win they are no good, been around the back side of it for 15 years, and know how they think. Some owners and traines are Excellent people like the Jackson's in both sports. Your post was exactly right on the mark. We vote so we can be represented. They are suppose to be working for us because of that. And they are suppose to LISTEN to our concerns, and the slaughtering practice is barbaric and a big one. It's like a celebrity who is nasty to the fans who put them where they are. Not right.

Regarding the video, I have seen pictures... The video would put me over the edge. I don't know how these "people" can do it and live with themselves. I cannot relate to the cruelty.

There is a very wise adage which I have personal experience of to assert as being true: "What you resist will persist." This relates to situations where there is resistance on one side and the other side persists in trying to go "against" the flow rather than with it.

Case in point: When Barbaro was pulled up at The Preakness by a very intelligent and caring Edgar Prado. Barbaro did not resist what "was" at that moment. When Edgar jumped off and pulled him back, Barbaro gave in to the situation at that moment; he didn't fight it or try to run; he gave 'into' the resistance rather than to persist and aggravate his own situation.

When Barbaro had his surgery on the right hind and then developed Laminitis in the left hind, again, look at what he did. Everyone noted how smart he was and that he knew just what to do and he didn't fight the inevitable at that moment. He didn't 'resist' what was happening to him. He gave into it, even embraced it and allowed his doctors and other caregivers to tend to him.

As Barbaro continued his recovery, he wasn't allowed to go into the open field yet and graze; he was kept stall-bound for most of the time, and at other times he needed to go into his sling. Remember those days? Again, it was noted over and over how Bobby would nudge to go into the sling when he knew it was the best for him and his recovery. Again, he didn't fight what 'was' or persist in the resistance of it; he went with the flow and accepted his current condition. He may not have liked it, but he didn't fight it which would have only worsened his status and his condition.

When Bobby continued to go with the flow, he got healthier and progressively better. Yes, he persevered and he was determined and he was courageous and he was purposeful and he was positive with his attitude, BUT he also did not resist what was happening to him at the time and he didn't persist against the resistance. He embraced his condition completely but he allowed time and the flow to be with him instead of against him. And what happened?

Bobby was finally given the green light by Dr. Richardson to go out and graze for 15/20 minutes those first August days. Remember how thrilled we were? Well just imagine how thrilled Bobby was! But again, he 'listened' and 'paid attention' to the instructions he was getting, both verbally and physically from Dr. Richardson. He didn't fight it or try to run away from Dr. Richardson. He knew that he had to 'go with the flow' and not resist it, and he prevailed and he got stronger and better and he had more courage and determination to succeed.

Sometimes, perseverance and dedication and courage and determination doesn't mean trying to swim against the current; it doesn necessarily mean continuing the same steps at all costs. The definition of "insanity" is: Doing the same thing over and over hoping for a different result. Sometimes we just need to DO it differently, or maybe we might need to notice that we are creating even more resistance with our persistence. Sometimes it means to accept that something isn't working right now and to embrace and accept that without going against the resistance, just like Bobby has been doing all along. And maybe that is the lesson we need to learn from him. Give up? Never! Throw in the towel? No! Cast aside the gauntlet? No way! But, we may just need to accept that the 'flow' is not with us today in this moment and if that is the case, then just maybe we need to stop resisting what "is" because both sides are becoming very frustrated, annoyed, angry, short-tempered, etc. as we read here.

Continue on, yes, but with short polite phone calls, faxes, etc. and if you don't see positive results, then, again, accept that patience is a virtue, as Bobby did ... accept that it may not happen this week as Bobby learned to accept so many challenges in his young life, but he always surrendered to his current situation with a resolve to succeed, but he went with the flow and not against it.

There will be many new faces in Congress on January 20th, 2007 and it will be Democratically-controlled in both houses. We know that we have very strong support for this bill to pass on both sides of the aisle, but many of the senators at the forefront who really want this bill to pass; i.e. Landrieu, Boxer, Feinstein, etc. do sit on the Democratic side of the aisle. So, there may not be as much "resistance" then to get this bill through because the "flow" will be with us, rather than against us, and we just might see many more co-sponsors out of the new Congress.

If something really isn't working, then there's a reason for it; if a particular course of recovery for Barbaro wasn't working, then would have had to reconsider, regroup, rethink and reassess and they would have had to come up with something else that does work. It doesn't mean giving up; it doesn't mean giving in; it doesn't mean defeat; it just means paying attention and being aware when we are meeting too much resistance. Fighting back does not equate to success; it equates to "what you resist will persist" and that never translates into victory, especially when it's just not happening that smoothly for us right now.

There are a couple of days left to do whatever we can, but don't despair and don't force it with anger or frustration because January 20th is a brand new day and we just might have to exercise a little more patience and resolve to go with the flow ... just like Bobby has been teaching and telling us all along.

Anyway, that's just my perspective on all of this after reading posts about CSpan, coverage, hang ups, etc.

Good afternoon all:
Here's a re-post. I have changed strategy in my communication with the aides who are evasive! I keep it short, to the point and professional! I have told them I expect, fully expect, this message to reach the hands and ears of the senator they work for. I am also going to make copies of this and send it FEDEX! Overnight! I respect our government! I don't respect those who abuse it! What we have been watching in this session and the one a few weeks ago is a blatant mis-use of time. And a body of government that does not listen to the people. Again, this is not a response rooted only in the lack of action for our bill, but the overall proceedings!
Daryl!

Dear Senator____________
I have been watching CSPAN’s telecast of senate proceedings. In viewing how you are conducting the people’s business I conclude the senate body has no desire to address the issues the American public has put before you. As an advocate for S.1915 my frustration is further enhanced. In regards to this bill, all members of the senate have the facts. I demand you address this, and other issues. The accolades you pay to outgoing members of your body are proper. But do it on your time, not the people’s time. I have heard from yours and other senator’s aides that there may not be enough time to address all the issues. With all due respect, this is an attempt to mask certain agendas by certain members of the body. Time is not an issue. Time management is! Put the politics of S.1915 aside. Listen to the demands of the American people and the House of Representatives, both who have overwhelmingly spoken for a ban of the horse slaughtering industry. You work for the American public. And the people are telling you: get to work!

Linnie,
I'm not feeling like a good girl today, I feel like an avenging angel and it feels very therapeutic. I am not rude to those I'm calling, I am assertive and honest and it feels good! Each of us must do things in our own way, that is how we learn and grow, not by advice. I am learning this with my daughter, the minute I give her advice she shuts down, she has to figure it out for herself. It's good, it takes me off the hook of being the person who has to "fix it".

Ann MD, thank you for suggesting a visit to www.tbfriends.com. One cent out of every dollar wagered.. to retire race horses. And here in NY we are about to have an overhaul in our racing system. Hey, who would have thought we could put a man on the moon a hundred years ago, and we did that!

FOB, it's discouraging watching the political process with a fire in our bellies this week. I'm focusing on Friar Tuck's post: We're just seeing retail politics. It's all about the back room now. How about a few minutes of pure positive focus on making the deal. Forgetting about the faxes, the hired hands on the phones, the voice mails. Though we are passionate, S 1915 makes good logic, too. In our passion it's important to not appear desperate or strident or we'll be written off as animal rights activists on the fringe.
A moment to re-group and focus on those back rooms, where this deal will happen when it does. Miracle.

Hi Bonnie ... thanks for your post but I certainly was not telling anyone what to do or how to behave or to be 'good'. I was simply posting my own thoughts and observations like everyone else is ... we all have that right and I appreciate and read any and all comments that might be helpful to me, personally; if not, then I continue on as you are doing, and I completely and totally respect your resolve and that of others.

Again, I sensed frustration after reading a whole slew of comments here, and I posted my opinion and observation. I spoke with Senator Landrieu's office today and as you may already know, The Senator has been working on a bill OCS/3711 for the past 10 years. This bill is very important to her as well. While trying to get 3711 done this year and being very close now, Senator Landrieu spoke with her aides yesterday and wanted an update on the horse slaughter bill (meaning) things are happening behind the scenes and Senator Landrieu wanted to be brought up to speed. I then asked Senator Landrieu's office what can we do to help this late in the game? CALL FRIST...PUT ALL YOUR ATTENTION ON FRIST NOW. That said, WE MUST STAY FOCUSED UNTIL THE VERY END. PLEASE KEEP CALLING...

How is it that American horses are ending up at the Mexican slaughterhouses? How barbaric and cruel to have a knife repeatedly stabbed in their necks - I watched the video and heard the high pitched cry of that horse. How savage and cruel. How typical of spare all costs ( don'y buy a bolt gun ) to make the most money and hire illiterate brutes who laugh and cheer while the horse they are killing is screaming.

I cannot watch any videos or even read anything that is too graphic, but I was horrified also to find out recently that our horses are going to Mexican slaughterhouses and many uneducated people as to what S1915 really means believe that our horses will still be sent there to be slaughtered regardless of the passage of any bill. Of course, we all know this is NOT the case, but these people are misinformed.

If we have 2 slaughterhouses in Texas why are 8500 a year getting butchered in Mexico? I would think that the Belgian's would want to have that horse meat to sell overseas also. I hate to say it but after seeing today's video the damn bolt gun is less cruel than repeated stabbings.

We need to end slaughter and make sure the horses don't end up in Mexico. If we are not able to end American slaughter in the near future can we at least get our AMERICAN government to outlaw the shipping of horses for slaughter to Mexico?

OK, Linnie. That's a "Gotcha." "Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results!"

Yep, everyone . . . on both sides of the phone calls . . . are getting preturbed. As polite as we try to be, tempers are warming up.

Sorry for my smart alek remarks earlier about CSPAN.

Have to admit that I want what I want when I want it with reference to this Bill. But, I also have to agree with you that, IF we find that we have been pushing a very large rock up hill, we do not have to plunge into despair, or turn to anger and frustration.

We continue to learn how to reach into the Senators hearts, in a positive way, and will reach our goal of helping provide good stewardship for our equine brothers and sisters. I believe this will happen because this IS a common goal.

I believe that were efficatious solutions to the opposition's concerns solidly in place, providing alternative avenues for the opposition's advocates to direct their energies and their investments, that they might be more amenable to our cause. Simply stated, we need to be able to provide viable solutions, not cause more anticipated problems.

I can't believe that any of our Senators feel that slaughter is fun. They are just not convinced that alternative solutions are in place. MHO

Whatever, Linnie, your post certainly made me think (rather than just react!) Thanks for that moment of sanity.

This has been a busy day. Many Senators have received from me "The Grisley End For American Horses" and Susan E's eloquent letter along with calls of "what do we need to do to get this bill to the floor". The gal that answered the phone at Frists really seemed edgy. When I asked her about bringing the Bill to the floor she said they were scheduling the calendar as we were speaking. I respectfully requested to speak for an aide, she told me I could leave my comments with her. After several requests that I speak to an aide she finally transferred me. I mentioned to the aide my concern that Senator Frist might be listening to the concerns of the Tennessee Walking Horse Assoc above the Nation. His response was that they received call from Tennessee that were for the Bill. I politely asked that the Bill be brought to the floor and that Senator take 1 good bipartisan action before he retires. Also called Reid's office. This Bill is still in Committee.

What a beautiful and very perceptive analogy, and probably very true, at least from my perspective. I can't speak for Bonnie, of course, but water flowing over the rock does suit me quite well, and oddly enough, I am a water sign so I relate to it very easily. But the water cannot flow over the rock without the rock's hearty and strong existence in the first place, so I agree completely with your concept. Thank you for stating it so perfectly, Carol.

Chris, I agree with your view on the Mexican part of that video. I'd seen the US version and was not prepared for the Mexican version. The part about fooling the American corporate lunch room... pretending it's beef. I wonder what will happen with THAT now that the news is out.

It seems anyone can sell horses to anyone, anywhere. The key is to stop the transportation. Enforcement will take care of the problem of our horses going to Mexico.

People have spoken of a boycott of Mexican goods and travel while these practices go on. It might be something to consider if S 1915 is delayed till the next session.

May the horses in those places be surrounded with comfort of the highest kind and may their journey be as easy as it can be.

I don't see how people for slaughter can call a bolt gun humane, and a KNIFE? Don't these people have any heart at all? ANY? And the same goes for those that are for slaughter. Susan...Believe in Miracles. Believe in Barbaro.

Linnie,

Once again you get my vote for being a wise and an astute observer of what is happening (or not) on the Senate floor. Much as it causes me sadness and sorrow, I think you have hit the nail on the head. The group that is capable of doing something is sand bagging the Senate and the American public. Continue on with S1915, yes we must. But we have to consider what and who we are up against. I think we need to find the right Senators for 2007. Find a Senator or several Senators that are interested in getting some work done. We need to consider approaching one of them about S1915. Perhaps S1915 might be added on to one of their pet or top priorities they want to get passed. Just a thought.

I understand, I feel the same way at times. Just remember what Friar Tuck said. We have NO idea what is going on behind the scenes. Who knows, maybe this stuff on C-span is all "window dressing". Maybe we will get a nice surprise before this Congress adjourns.

All I can say is, all the ones who seem inhuman/inhumae-remember them when it's time to vote.

Big push to congress for horse slaughter ban
December 7, 2006

Animal-rights groups are making a big push to get a bill banning the slaughter of horses in the United States through as Congress begins to wind up for the year.

The legislation is aimed at shutting down three processing plants but time is running out this year, with Congress set to adjourn at the weekend.

It would also ban the transporting of horses for slaughter, meaning they could not be taken out of the country for this purpose.

However, the bill, which is waiting to go before the Senate, may not make it, with several senators indicating they would block any attempts to have the matter heard before next year.

The industry is worth US$60 million a year, with much of the meat being exported for human consumption in Europe and Japan.

The US plants slaughtered more than 90,000 horses in 2005.

ATTENTION EVERYONE, NEW & ADDITIONAL STRATEGY FOR SB 1915

Posted with the okay of Shelley A, Debra L, Daryl, etc.

Call the Office of the Chair of the Republican National Committee and the White House.

LOGIC: Frist isn't running in 08 for pres and is leaving the Senate, so he has nothing to lose personally by blocking the floor and keeping this legislation from a vote.

HOWEVER, his party suffered losses in the recent election and is at great risk of losing the White House in 08.

So, let's flood the Republican National Committee Chair and Oval Office with calls and faxes today politely and firmly requesting that they contact Frist and get him to put this bill on the floor this week for a voteby the full senate, no more delays.

This rescue story was in the Worcester MA Telegram today www.telegram.com - sad and happy:

Rescuers save abused ponies Hackneys now await adoption

By Ellie Oleson CORRESPONDENT

OXFORD— Five orphaned ponies have been rescued from a filthy barn they had been trapped in for years. They are now living in a paradise of fresh air, hay, peacocks and horses while they wait to be adopted.

Hackney ponies are known in show circles for their high-stepping trot as they pull small carriages and carts.

The coats of these five ponies have been dulled by neglect, but with some loving care and attention, they could be gleaming by next summer, according to Jamie Blash Flamand, owner of Four Winds Farm in Oxford, where the ponies are now sheltered.

The farm is a beautiful horse oasis with several barns, including a large new barn with 11 stalls, and an indoor arena that measures a spacious 80 feet by 200 feet. Peacocks and peahens parade around unchecked, while geese and horses are safe in their large paddocks.

While they wait for adoption, the ponies are housed in a separate, cozy barn with a grassy paddock full of hay and water nearby.

The ponies had lived on another Oxford farm owned by an older couple, whom animal control officers declined to identify.

“After the man died years ago, the woman did what she could. She had no family. The fences were coming down, so she kept the ponies in a barn for years,” said Patricia D. Dykas-Gonet, one of the town’s three animal control officers.

Fellow officer John F. Holden was on a routine barn inspection last week, when he discovered the ponies living in squalid conditions in the barn. He immediately called Sheila S. Donohue, director of animal control, who ordered that the animals be rescued.

“The woman surrendered the ponies. She knew she was in over her head, but she was elderly and alone,” Ms. Dykas-Gonet said.

She said it is unlikely that the woman will face any animal cruelty charges.

“She did the best she could. She is broken up about this. They are flashy ponies with good bloodlines,” Ms. Dykas-Gonet said.

Edward A. Blash and his daughter, Jamie Blash Flamand, were contacted and quickly provided a horse trailer to move the ponies to Four Winds Farm.

“Thanks to the Blash family and the Oxford Police Department, the ponies were safely at the Blashes within hours,” Ms. Dykas-Gonet said.

Mrs. Flamand said she was shocked by the condition of the ponies at first.

“Their hooves had grown out 10 inches and curled back like a genie’s shoes,” Ms. Dykas-Gonet said.

“They were forced to walk on the back of their heels. They were ribby, but have filled out quickly, now that they can eat all they want,” Mrs. Flamand said.

Both women credited Millbury veterinarian Dr. Kris M. Koss, who specializes in large animals, for helping. He examined and wormed the ponies and trimmed their hooves, making them far more comfortable.

“Kris was amazing. He really stepped up,” Ms. Dykas-Gonet said. “Now there’s nothing wrong with those ponies that a little TLC wouldn’t cure.”

Anyone interested in adopting a hackney pony should call the Police Department at (508) 987-0156 for information.

Daisy, about 9 years old, is a dark brown mare with a large white, heart-shaped blaze on her forehead.

“She’s my favorite,” Mrs. Flamand admitted, as she hugged the pony, which came trotting over when she called.

There also are two 13-year-old bay mares — Lucy, who has a white blaze, and Grace, who is “a little crazy, but cute. She’s the tallest of the five,” Mrs. Flamand said.

The two bay geldings are Spike, in his late teens, and Burf, who is about 20 years old and has four white socks.

“They are all driving ponies, broke to drive, not ride,” Mrs. Flamand pointed out. “They would make great pets. They are so cute.”

Each of the ponies stands about 12 hands to 13 hands — that is, 48 inches to 52 inches tall. They have small heads and ears and are less stocky and longer-legged than a Shetland pony.

“I would hate to see them go to anyone who doesn’t know horses,” Mrs. Flamand said. “They could be boarded right here, if the new owner doesn’t have a barn.”

Ms. Dykas-Gonet said the ponies are available for a $200 adoption fee each.

Yes, this is exactly what I mean ... if doors are closing instead of opening right now, then we need to (whether we like it or not) accept "their" agenda as not being "our" agenda. Maybe we will see a miracle this week, but if not, then I'm optimistically positive and upbeat about the doors really being opened and our "cause" being welcomed at the right time and with the right people. I think it's encouraging that we will see so many new faces in Congress, and many of them may be a lot more "friendly" and receptive to passing S1915 if it doesn't pass this week. I will not despair nor will I walk away, but I'm just not one for trying to go through obstacles; it's wasted time and energy. If I see something isn't working, I stop and become "aware" of the lesson that I need to learn because the Universe is always teaching me a lesson. When I pushed and persisted, nothing went right for me. When I persisted in getting a job several years ago, I didn't 'see' the signs I was getting not to pursue this particular job ... nothing was flowing easily but I kept at it. Well, I did get the job but I left 3 months later because it was so not who I was and wanted to surround myself with. But I didn't notice the resistance I was getting, and it was for a good reason, but I persisted. I have since learned when to recognize signs from the Universe, especially where it becomes very obvious that I am meeting resistance or that things aren't happening easily. There's always a reason for it if I'm astute enough to notice it.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm referring to ... stepping back for a moment and trusting and allowing the energy of the Universe to work "for" us. If I keep pushing and resisting then I am shutting down the benevolent forces and positive energy that is trying to break through and lead the way for us.

Thanks for your insight .... very very appreciated and respected.

Alex to re-open the boards after New Years...

He wrote this on the General board at 4:16

"I have spent a few days contemplating my decision to close down this discussion board and the comments on the main site. While doing so I have continued to read everything here, there and in e-mail. Initially I had thought I would shut everything down for good, but I have decided that I will reopen everything after a short break. As of yet I am not too sure what a "short break" means, but likely I will close things down (except for updates) a week or so before christmas, and reopen everything just after the new year. I will then endevour to keep everything open through the "triple crown" series, which ends early June. From that point onward I am not sure what will happen (I plan to retire the end of may).

The above is contingent on prospero's continued support, and the "support" of everyone here.

What you are suggesting is that the Senate issue the equivalent of a TRO. These can be issued by a court to maintain the status quo while it is contemplating a decision; but I'm not sure Congress really has a similar mechanism. Maybe someone out there knows...

Posted by: Renee Antaya at December 6, 2006 10:06 PM

Attention FOBs’! Attention FOBs’!
Susan E. has a great idea! Here it is.
New strategy. It is quite obvious by now the senate is not listening to us. We must do two things. First, we have to literally bombard Frist’s line, e-mail and fax. Second! We are now going to call the Republican National Committee Chair. Call this person and tell him to get Frist to move this bill to the floor! This will show how serious we are and that we are not going to be discouraged. Professionally, explain we are not being heard, the last election did not go their way and this trend will continue as long their elected officials opt to not listen to the people.
Please keep your dialogue professional. No threats. The above statement is not a threat. It is bringing up a fact that is leverage for us. Our emotions are raw, we are all frustrated. I urge everyone to take a deep breath, make these calls and when you are done, make more calls!
We hereby declare Thursday National Call-In Day to the Republican National Committee!
Mr. Ken Mehlman - 202-863-8700
Senator Bill Frist - 202-224-3135
Great idea! Thanks Susan!
Daryl!
ps. If the RNC chair, or aide, tries to re-direct you take no for an answer. Kindly explain we want to be heard and the other methods are falling on deaf ears. Firmly tell him/her this message must get to Frist!

Congratulations, Dr. Richardson, on your latest, and well-deserved, award. We all so appreciate you, and the outstanding work you do . . . in the classroom, in the operating theatre, and in communicating your cutting-edge work and research to the media. Your efforts have elevated equine knowledge and understanding to exceptional new heights. We are proud to "sort of" know you!

C Jaffe:

I can't take credit for the e-mail...wish I could...:) - Joyce Moore sent out the original - I was just putting my 2cents in - but what matters is that those that Joyce e-mailed got the wonderful news and could spread it out to the entire board.

Alex, thank you again for your generous heart and spirit. We owe you big time...:)

Healing, Love, Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

Sweet Barbaro,

May you have a restful sleep that re-energizes your body and soul. Keep healing and doing what the Doc's tell you.I am so grateful to them and the Jacksons' for taking such good care of you. It gives me such peace of mind.

May the Lord continue to watch over you and keep you well.

Thank you Joyce Moore; didn't realize you had started the chain. And thank you Lyn G for your additional 2 cents, haha. Yes, we must spread the word. I posted the news here and sent the email to 3 ladies whose names I hadn't seen on the list, and now will be posting to BarbaroManiacs and MHR Groups. I am so overwhelmed by this news, I can't begin to tell you. I was already trying to talk myself into that I wasn't going to mind "that much" when the anticipated 2 weeks were up.

Alex, we love you and are glad you'll be getting some time off - but RETIRE? you're RETIRING? From all your occupations, or the riding? Somehow I can't picture you "retired"!

KEEP CALLING! CJ

Sorry--off topic but so many kind souls have asked:

We're back from the vet's. Like Bobby, like the FOB's, Dr. Frank is not ready to throw in the towel. Bloodwork will be done, hope to know tomorrow re condition of liver and kidneys....he's lost almost half a pound in a month so maybe his thyroid meds need to be stepped up. He's going back on Prednisone. The fat lady has not yet sung!
