    Barbaro Updates: 162

    updates are now here.

Update 1215: The Good Morning America piece: Barbaro Recovers: A True Champion. This includes new video from Penn, filmed yesterday, as well as footage from last friday's visit (the New Bolton fence line and Christmas Tree etc.) of GMA.

Update 1214: I don't think anyone would argue with this: Barbaro...Simply the Best. To follow that up, in the Philadelphia area anyway, In 2006 horse race, Barbaro was the best.

Update 1213: A must read commentary by Dr. Richardson in the Thoroughbred Times: Lessons learned from Barbaro. It concludes:

When the four of us--the Jacksons, trainer Michael Matz, and me--were discussing the gravity of the situation, there were no dry eyes. But the nice thing is that there was one other individual there taking part in the decision who didn't have tears in his eyes. That was Barbaro! Because he was just standing there--looking like a great horse--telling us that he wanted to go on.

That is why we went on then and why we continue to go on now.

Update 1212: I just got the word Barbaro will be on Good Morning America tomorrow as well as World News Tonight:

The GMA piece will air around 7:30 - 7:40am tomorrow (they often change the air time depending on other late breaking news). It will also air on Worlds News Tonight tomorrow night, as well as various other networks around the country.

I know a Fan of Barbaro was interviewed for this piece when adding a poster to the fence line, lets hope that makes the news too!

Update 1211: I cannot imagine this is a good decision no matter how it is spun: Wire To Wire Cut from Revamped ESPN Lineup. And this is some of the spin:

"Wire to Wire is something that we can do without now, but even with all of the revisions, we feel that less is more," said ESPN senior vice president Len DeLuca. "We will be more committed on the jewel events, particularly now that the 'Breeders' Cup Challenge' is in place.

Update 1210: Three new Barbaro photographs from today: Barbaro Photo Album.

Update 1209: New Bolton's update today on Barbaro: Barbaro examined by podiatrist:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was examined yesterday by Dr. Scott Morrison, head of the equine podiatry service at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. "Barbaro is stable and comfortable although we remain concerned about the long term management of his left hind foot," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. According to Barbaro's medical team, Dr. Morrison did some minor work on Barbaro's left hind foot, and made recommendations concerning the management of that foot. "There is no timetable at this moment concerning Barbaro's discharge from the hospital," said Dr. Richardson. "His comfort on both hind limbs is good and his overall condition is excellent."

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, January 2, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 1208: Barbaro has a race named after him: Sir Barton Stakes renamed Barbaro Stakes. The Sir Barton is run on the Preakness undercard, and like the Preakness, is restricted to three year olds.

More confirmation that Hollywood Park benefited from the Cushion Track: Handle, field size increase, thanks to Cushion Track. The article concludes:

Showing Up, the winner of the Hollywood Derby on Nov. 26, was named horse of the meeting.

    Cool!

Update 1207: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). Mrs. Jackson just called (12:30 pm) to let us know, after her morning visit.

I feel that Barbaro should stay at home with the Jacksons. They love him and he loves them. They could give us all news of him and keep us up to date on what is going on in his life every now and then and we would know that he was happy being at home with them. He is their baby and I think that being with them is the best thing for Barbaro and for them.

Posted by: Blodwyn Newton at December 20, 2006 6:13 PM

Alex-All the articles on our boy Bobby are very interesting and informative. It ceratinly looks as if our boy is growing stronger and gaining the needed confidences needed to move on in his next phase of life.

Barbaro seems so at ease with all manner of change. We mostly are creatures of habit, afraid of change. My sister always says that she welcomes change-it is what keeps her on her toes and fresh and makes everything seem brighter. I, on the other hand, am extrememly set in my ways, and am afraid of change-any change. It has come to my realization that change IS for the best sometimes.

We get in a rut, go around in circles, chasing our tails and no end is in sight. Sometimes change is necessary to see the sun for the clouds. Nothing wrong with trying to peer forward straining to see through the murk. Scary, yes. Achievable, yes. Takes some will and some strength but it is attainable. The Jackson's are doers, they are achievers, they above all are going to be the Guardian of our Champion, no matter if he is in their backyard or 1000 miles away. They have accomplished so much in so little time. Our Big Ole Boy has accomplished so much in so little time. They together have CHANGED the WORLD as we know it,for the better.

We here at TWR, all of us FOBs have played an integral part in this movement. They cannot call us a "grass root" movement anymore, we are stronger and larger than any grass roots organization and a force to be reckoned with from now on. Hard work, diligence and prayer have all paid off in our fight. Prayer has also seen fit to help our Bobby, Mike Rea and perform the miracle so desperatley needed for Erin Brennan and our own Linda H. and Mary L. Prayer is still fighting the good fight for Bdude, Felix, Bdudette, Nala, Lola, and Cahill Zeke and the rest of our friends in dire need. Love and Light and Healing to all in need. I pray for you all.

I completely agree that the VERY BEST thing would be for Barbaro to stay with the Jacksons, not have him available "to the public" and have occasional updates on his condition. Let him get back to a normal life.

Create his own website, and have someone maintain it with updates, pictures and reports on his health and condition.

He doesn't need to have the general public hanging over him. He is different, his situation is different and needs to be treated that way.

Please, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, let him stay with you. he loves you.

Posted by: Randee at December 20, 2006 6:18 PM

I don't think the Jacksons' farm is such that sufficient security can be established. People would be trying to sneak a peek - or worse - at Barbaro, whether he was officially available for public viewing or not.

Posted by: Sarah from NC at December 20, 2006 6:26 PM

God grant Barbaro continued healing, and I thank you for his happiness! Please watch over him, Lord. Please guide everyone to do what is best for him. Amen.

The Jacksons are out for the comfort and the quality of life for Mr. Barbaro Jackson. I have seen nothing but the best for our boy and they will see to it that that remains. Plus Barbaro makes friends and will not be so bored in a small area. All the best To Barbaro.......

    Well said Belinda!!!

    Ro & Brady

Posted by: Rosemarie at December 20, 2006 6:36 PM

Seucrity is a huge issue and Lael Farms is not going to be equipped to deal with a superstar presence. A major concern for the Jacksons is Bobby's safety - from his injuries, and from strange people who do awful things for reasons we normal folks can't understand. They will make sure he goes somewhere where he has green pastures, blue skies, people who can take care of him and will love him, where they can visit him regularly, where there are other horses. He loves them yes, but he is a horse first and foremost, and they want him to be a happy, healthy, safe horse.

As to going somewhere where he can touch the public, let's not forget this is a horse who knows he is a star, who had beaucoup charmisa, who turns it own for the press....The Jacksons have a lot of things to think about in deciding what and where the best place is for our boy.

They will do the right thing for him. Have they let us down yet? All they have ever said is that they want him to happy and healthy. I think safe comes into it now as well.

Alex and FOB's -- check this out from The Thoroughbred Times:

Sir Barton Stakes renamed Barbaro Stakes

The Maryland Jockey Club has changed the name of the Sir Barton Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile test for three-year-olds on the Preakness Stakes (G1) undercard at Pimlico Race Course, to the Barbaro Stakes.
Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby presented by Yum Brands! (G1) winner, shattered his right hind leg during last year's Preakness and remains at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center.

Owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the son of Dynaformer won the 2005 Laurel Futurity as a two-year old. Trained by Michael Matz, he won six races at five different tracks on the turf, over the slop, and on fast main tracks.

"We thought it was the right thing to do," MJC President Lou Raffetto said. "Barbaro has become the most popular racehorse in the country because of his courageous battle to overcome such a severe injury.

"This change will allow the next generation of race fans to reflect upon this magnificent and beloved champion during Preakness day at Pimlico."

The Sir Barton Stakes was named after the first horse to capture the Triple Crown in 1919. The Sir Barton Stakes was first run at Pimlico in 1993.

Sarava was the most famous winner, using the race as a springboard to a victory in the 2002 Belmont Stakes (G1) three weeks later.

Lisa, again - you hit the nail on the head.

Down the line, God willing, Barbaro may be able to enjoy the company of other horses, which is probably more important to a horse. He's a herd animal, after all.

I don't think these are final plans, anyway. As Barbaro changes, so may the plans, especially if he can be a stud. But they have to think of everything, and do what's best for him. I read about Dancinginmydreams and all the special things they still have to do for her after all this time.

It might also be that the Jacksons are not prepared to become public property on their farm, and feel like some of those old English families who live in one wing of the castle and endure guided tours day in and day out.

I know they will choose the best possible place for Barbaro. First and foremost, he must be safe, and his health must be maintained--including avoiding laminitis.

Thank you Alex for the update and yesterday's
posting of your visit with Mrs Jackson, Barabro and co. You are sooo good with your descriptions, it's like we are all right with you.

Guys, I have the perfect solution to where Barbaro will go next. I, like others don't feel like it's time for him to be on public display. I think he needs time in an environment where he can heal and have loving care.

Therefore, I offer to take care of him myself.
I am in the process now of moving to a new house and brand new barn my husband and I have spent the last 15 months building. Barbaro can have a great stall with a dutch door so he can hang his head out like Mr Ed and watch what's going on, his own paddock area to take his supervised walks
and grass nibbles and unlimited and boundless love from me!! The Jackson's can just announce they have moved him to an undisclosed location.
I have room for Mocha, too, she can have her own stall next to his, there are slats so they can see one another.. For company also are my horses, a chestnut mare, Lady, a black stallion, Doctor Jazz(Doc), and three geldings..my own Big Bay One, Jackson Browne, a blue eyed paint named Scout, and a 4 year old playmate for Barbaro ,a buckskin named Lucky who gets along with everyone.

For security I have a great fence ,a big gate, two dogs and most importantly, a high powered rifle with a long range scope and laser sights...Did I mention I am an excellent marksman?!

I can call Ms Jackson daily with updates, Alex, too, and all will be happy (esp me)lol...The Jacksons are welcome anytime and when he is well , they can decide his next move..as long as I always can have access to him...I would be the best surrogate mother he could ever have..I spoil my own horses completely rotten, I buy 35 lbs of carrots a week and also red delicious apples, and the stud muffins they like, so Barbaro can just join and fit right in..

    Life is GOOD!!!!

Barbaro's progress has been phenomenal and nothing short of a miracle. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see him out of a hospital setting and back into a "normal" life complete with other "friends" to spend time with and graze with. This is my wish for precious Mr. B. He definitely owns my heart. Happy Holidays to all who post...you have become my "family of friends".

Posted by: Nonie at December 20, 2006 7:18 PM

Barbaro is already a celebrity...there is not much one can do about that except plan for the best surroundings given the situation. And he needs adequate medical care too.

I think Barbaro really enjoys people. Just look at his face in that new picture. I think he kinda digs having alot of hubbub around him. I dont know....Barbaro seems happy in many different places...he is so smart about things.....I think a young colt such as himself might want to be where the action is so to speak....for a couple of years anyways. He is such a dynamic, powerful, horse with brains beyond belief!

I think that..for myself anyway, I'd have to admit, that if some said to me that I could pay 25 dollars to observe Barbaro frolicking at the Kentucky Horse Park or other such facility, and that 1/2 of the proceeds would go toward horse rescue/reseach, I'd be there in a heart beat. I dont see this as exploitation....I see it as a great outcome to a horrific tradgedy....making lemonade out of lemons.

This is just me being honest with myself. I know that this does not represent the views of many of you. I just know in my heart that the Jacksons will do what is best for him. They obviously always have.

Yes Barbaro's progress has been phenomenal and nothing short of a miracle.

But he is going to have to be hand grazed, for sometime yet. He can not be turned out, Dr R said no running nor jumping or horseing around.

Hope you also have a Happy Holiday, and that Santa is good to you! :)

Has Alex said when the board will be closed for Christmas? Is he going home, to spend time with his family?

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at December 20, 2006 7:37 PM

    Well put, Leslie.

He is a ham. And as a horse, he'll like being around other horses. The Jacksons know him even better than we do, and they will make sure he has the best possible life.

I yearn for him to become a stud. That may not happen. I do know, though, that he will have a great time no matter what.

Posted by: J. Carson Black at December 20, 2006 7:38 PM

I can just picture him bouncing around, bucking, shaking, rolling on the ground and just acting silly and happy like the free spirit he is. God has blessed him.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at December 20, 2006 7:43 PM

Well said, Leslie and Jake - Keep him safe, keep him healthy, keep him stimulated, engaged and happy.

I too yearn for him to be a stud. I think he is going to make it eventually...But until it happpens, if and when, the Jacksons will make sure he has the best possible life. He is a great spokeshorse for lots of important causes that mean a lot to the Jacksons and to racing. He is a horse who has loved having a job. I think he and they will find ways to make his big presence felt by many and to continue to do good things for his equine friends and cousins as he continues to heal. They will do everything to ensure he is the best he can be and has the best possible life - happy, healthy, and safe.

Barbaro's Name Replaces Triple Crown Legend on Pimlico Race

    By Mason Levinson

Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Barbaro will replace the name of the first Triple Crown winner for a race on the undercard of the Preakness Stakes, where the Kentucky Derby champion shattered his right hind leg last May.

The Barbaro Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile test for 3-year-olds, will debut at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course on May 19, replacing the Sir Barton Stakes, the Maryland Jockey Club said in a news release.

Sir Barton was the first horse to complete thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1919.

``Barbaro has become the most popular racehorse in the country because of his courageous battle to overcome such a severe injury,'' club president Lou Raffetto said in a statement. ``This change will allow the next generation of race fans to reflect upon this magnificent and beloved champion during Preakness day at Pimlico.''

Barbaro, who was given a 50-50 chance of surviving the ankle fracture that ended his racing career, has been cleared to leave the suburban Philadelphia animal hospital where he has recovered for the past seven months.

Following the injury, the doctors inserted a plate and screws in Barbaro's right hind leg to fuse the bones and covered the injury with a cast from the colt's hoof to hock during the first of many operations.

As the colt was recovering, he developed an inflammation known as laminitis in the left hind leg in July, which forced the removal of 80 percent of his hoof wall.

The Sir Barton Stakes debuted at Pimlico in 1993.

Hello to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

I too am waiting for the update on Our Big Boss Top Horse! Thank goodness for Alex's daily bulletins! If not for you Alex, we'd go bonkers waiting!

Speaking of waiting, there are still over 175,000 people, mostly in King County (which is south of where I am) still without power! What's worse, a new windstorm is due in tonight with winds in some areas expected to get gusts up to 50MPH! It will probably gust up to 40MPH here in Snohomish County. Just exactly what those poor worn out line repairers need, more damage on top of damage still needing repairs from last week's storm! We have already been told that if our electricity goes out in this one, we will be the last to be turned back on, since up here there are around 500 people still out of power from Thursday's storm. As I said, It isn't even winter yet! Aaaaarrgh!

Well, I need to get busy and get something done, such as baking a few cookies, the throw in the oven kind, like Nestle's or Pillsbury's, or something. But I will check back regularly.

Warmest Regards from Laura S. in soon-to-be-windblown Puget Sound, WA!

Well, Bobby, you did it! ACN again (never tired of hearing that!) and NOW you have a race named after you! A stakes race, no less, and an illustrious one at, well, you know which track it's at. It is a huge honor, especially as you have not even been retired a year.

Whenever you leave NBC and wherever you go for the next stage, your Mom and Dad will first and foremost make sure you are safe, happy, healthy, and have top-notch medical care immediately available. That's all I want for you. If I never get to see you, that will be fine as long as those criteria are met.

I wonder if the Jacksons might have him "available" to the public for awhile, then quietly move him elsewhere when the time is appropriate?

My apologies - I see I was at least the third post about Barbaro having a race named after him.

At any rate, thank God for ACN and for Alex. Rock on, both of you Sweet Princes!

Prayers to our family members who need them.

Happy Holidays and let's get geared up for the fight.

Here is an excerpt from an email to we CampaigningforBarbaro Ambassadors from the US Humane Society:

    ...right now, there is
something that activists could be doing to really help
educate folks about horse slaughter. I would
encourage them to write letters to the editors of
local papers in their areas. Letters to the editor
(LTEs) are the most read section of any newspaper and
legislative offices watch the LTE sections to see how
folks are reacting to issues back home. By getting
LTEs on horse slaughter published, we can (1) educate
our community about why this inhumane practice should
end; (2) why they should care about it and (3) what
they can do [contact their Rep/Sen]. Plus the
legislative office of the area will take notice that
the issue has even made it to the local LTE page. (end of email excertp)

Please write your letters and send them everywhere. You'd be amazed what you can accomplish with a calm, collected and educated argument. And everyone we educate - who knew little before - is one more person fighting for our cause - and Barbaro's cause.

God Bless the Horses. We've got to end the slaughter.

    Barbaro examined by podiatrist

    December 20, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA-- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was examined yesterday by Dr. Scott Morrison, head of the equine podiatry service at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. “Barbaro is stable and comfortable although we remain concerned about the long term management of his left hind foot,” said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. According to Barbaro’s medical team, Dr. Morrison did some minor work on Barbaro’s left hind foot, and made recommendations concerning the management of that foot. “There is no timetable at this moment concerning Barbaro’s discharge from the hospital,” said Dr. Richardson. “His comfort on both hind limbs is good and his overall condition is excellent.”

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, January 2, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

I go to the ranch for a couple of hours and come home to find Barbaro now has a race named after him. I've been emotional all week (dear friends in Germany got some bad news), but reading this just made me so darn happy.

Yes, this is a time of change on many levels. But Barbaro is going to work thru this like he always does - just looks forward and steps over the threshold.

I can drive to Pimlico and I think as many FOB's should be there in May as can get there.

I am not a horse expert. My wife and I are dog breeders, showers, handlers, trainers etc.We are animal lovers big time and I did name a dog "Boogretariat" after my all time favorite horse, old buffalo neck himself. In fact I was watching Barbaro and drinking out of my Kentucky Derby glass from the year Secretariat won when he got hurt.I check on Barbaro first thing every morning. What can anyone tell me about the import of the caveat"we remain concerned about the long term management of his left hind foot".I've kept current on all the press releases but this thread has been developing for sometime and it is concerning me.In my life I have lost many wonderful 4 legged companions(aka furkids) and I take every comfortable day as a gift when I have a critically ill friend but I have prayed as much and fretted as much over Barbaro as one of my own.I lost a 12 year old ridgeback on 8-25-06 and during his lengthy struggles Barbaro's name was second only to Angus' on my prayer list. Can someone help?We are all in this together but some have the gift of greater wisdom.Thanks.

Hi Rick, I am not sure but I think his left hind will always be of some concern. Dr. Richardson has said it will never look like a normal hoof and I think they just want to get the best growth possible out of it. It does grow unevenly.
    Can anyone add to this?

    FOBs:

Just saw the 3 new pics and Barbaro is gorgeous. Dr. R. is beaming. These two have such a deep bond - what a blessing Barbaro has been to so many people. Also read Dr. R's e-mail on the DB and THAT picture is just as gorgeous.

For Dr. R to use the word "excellent" is literally a milestone. He has been very careful, very cautious (but realistic) in how he has expressed himself re Barbaro's condition. He seems like he doesn't mince words, but gives a lot of thought as to what to express and how to express it.

We've all been a part of something phenomenal - and we're not done yet.

Remember when they used to call the Barbaro updates on UPenn "the buzz on Barbaro"? I can't get over the feeling that we are being surrounded by electric buzz about him.

Scrolling down and reading comments reminded me of the movies where the news guys would rip off the AP wire and announce "News Flash!" It seems like the news is coming left and right and from everywhere--a race named in Barbaro's honor! Mrs. J getting involved in the new fund! The movie Alex told us about! Emails from Dr. R about NBC! Shopping for a new home for our boy! Wow, I am literally breathless and in tears. And now new photos!! He looks so beautiful. His right hind looks good, I think. His eyes are amazing.

Count me in on May 19, 2007 at Pimlico. I can "see" Barbaro being paraded down the track to the cheers of thousands. He will have conquered another obstacle--being back on the track that "defeated" him (but only temporarily). "19" is my significant number, so it's just perfect.

As for ESPN, I am very unhappy that they are cancelling Wire to Wire. I plan my Tuesday around it, too. Randy Moss is great. What the heck are they thinking? They have a sport that is newly revitalized, with some of the best horses running this year that have been around for quite some time, and they cut BACK on coverage? Looks like we have to write this Len guy and set him straight. There is nothing we FOBs cannot do :)

Alex, I wonder if your head is spinning like ours? Wow, all this, and Bobby playing games with his food and rocking out to the Stones and Zep. Who coulda believed it???

Alex, thanks so much for the photos and the update, and I'm so pleased that our boy Barbaro is being recognized by having a race named for him!! It's only fitting because he has, thru his grace and determination, made a difference in so many ways.

I'm thinking that from what Dr. R said, there are no immediate plans afoot to move Barbaro and I have to say I'm very relieved!!

    Hey Barbaro, sweetie pie.

Who loves ya, big boy? WE DO!! Hope you didn't mind Dr Morrison examining your left hind hoof, and that you had lotsa goodies, visitors of the social kind, and grazing and gazing. Hugs and smoochies, babycakes!

He blooms with health. His coat is gleaming!

It's a little bit of a shock seeing that huge boot on the left hind, but the right hind looks pretty good. Do you see the white stripe on it? That's new, the hair growing back from the scar, I'm guessing.

In the first photo he is standing foursquare and looks comfortable. His expression and Dr. Dean's say it all. Bobby is alert, interested, healthy, and happy. And Dr. Richardson is clearly proud of himself and pleased as punch.

I am so happy that Barbaro got a good report on his progress. Even if he has to go to Roods and Riddles maybe it can be for a short time ( with a life size poster of Mrs. Jackson in his stall and a phone installed in his stall so she can call him everyday so that he can hear her voice so Barbaro won't get lonesome for mom, and the Jacksons could send videos of themselves to play for Barbaro)and then they could secretly move him back home and put him in a high security setting so that he would be safe and happy, but nonone would know, just thinking of ideas for our Barbaro. If he wasn't physically healed yet for stud, maybe R&R could do something like artificial insemination so a Baby Barbaro could arrive too! Wouldn't that be a Happy New Year for Barbaro!

Exellent post Lyn. For Dr. Richardson to use "excellent" with regards to Barbaro IS a milestone.

I'm shocked about ESPN. With the new racing surfaces gaining popularity, good horses, Barbaro's impact on public interest in the sport, just to name a few reasons, one would think horseracing would get more coverage, not less.

Randy, Janine, Jerry, etc, all should consider going to work for another network. Poker and paintball more coverage perhaps?????? Good lord.

Hay to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

What a wonderful report on Our Big Boss Top Horse! He's doing great, but will still be in the horse-pital for awhile. He even had a pedicure on that laminitic hoof! Woohoo! However, I think that his pedicurist is going to have to do his other three hoofies - after all, one's gotta be lookin' good for Christmas!

Speaking of lookin' good, those new pix don't just look good, they look GREAT! Barbaro is quite a handsome horsey, and a real good looker, too! So is the great-looking guy standing next too! Dr. Richardson is a really handsome guy in his own right!

I did not get a picture of Barbaro Emailed to me from Penn Vet either! I suppose it is because I did not send Our Top Horse a note for a couple days, so maybe Barbaro misplaced my Email address. I'll wait a bit, and if I don't get the message and picture soon, maybe someone can send it to me!

    I'll check back later!

Rescue teams Wednesday gave up any hope of finding two missing climbers alive on stormy Mount Hood, Oregon, as the operation became a recovery effort. Friends and relatives of Brian Hall and Jerry "Nikko" Cooke flew over the mountain today in what one searcher called a "farewell flight." A third climber, Kelly James, was found dead Sunday.

Lynda, amazing article! Thanks so much for posting that. The last paragraph got me:

"When the four of us--the Jacksons, trainer Michael Matz, and me--were discussing the gravity of the situation, there were no dry eyes. But the nice thing is that there was one other individual there taking part in the decision who didn't have tears in his eyes. That was Barbaro! Because he was just standing there--looking like a great horse--telling us that he wanted to go on.

That is why we went on then and why we continue to go on now."

Another item of interest....Alex.....Dr. Richardson mentions that only a very few people are allowed to graze him. As if all of us didn't know this already, you so deserve this honor, and it is an honor (even when it's 20 degrees outside!) What trust the Jackson and Dr. Richardson have in you. No surprise to any of us here....!

SALLY in KEY WEST; It kinda scared me too, the leg being bent like that, but I just now remembered that Dr R was saying that when a bone heals, it calcifies (makes extra bone), so mabe it is stronger than it looks.

SKYLER; I loved that last paragraph too. I can jsut see Barbaro standing there with a look on his face that says, "HAY What about me? It's MY foot! I wanna LIVE!!!"

    It's My Life Lyrics
Artist(Band):No Doubt and originally Talk Talk

    It's My Life Lyrics

It's funny how I found myself in love with you
If I could buy my reasoning I'd pay to lose
    One half won't do
    I've asked myself
    How much do you
    Commit yourself?

    Well it's my life
    Don't you forget
    It's my life
    It never ends

    Funny how I blind myself
    I never knew
If I was sometimes played upon
    Afraid to lose
I'd tell myself what good do you do?
    Convince myself

    It's my life
    Don't you forget
    It's my life
    It never ends

    I asked myself
    How much do you
    Commit yourself?

    It's my life
    Don't you forget
    Caught in the crowd
    It never ends

    It's my life
    Don't you forget
    Caught in the crowd
    It never ends

    It's my life
    (oh it's my life)
    Don't you forget
    (don't you forget)
    Caught in the crowd

Good evening everyone! Just got home from work and read the NBC update, read Dr. R's article, and checked out the new pictures. I too broke out in tears when I read the last paragraph.

Barbaro's leg actually looks better than I thought it would and the rest of him looks WONDERFUL!

I was actually more shocked by the big balloon thing on his laminitic foot.

The great thing is, he can balance evenly on the two legs, and while it isn't pretty, he doesn't seem the least put out by it. Again - what an incredible horse he is!

Hopefully, down the line, he will be able to go out to pasture like Dancinginmydreams. I think the bone will be very strong, and he should be all right, but it will be a very long time before that could happen, clearly.

I wonder how he would balance servicing a mare. Again, the jury's still out - and most of this depends on the left hind hoof.

Grow, hoof, grow. Grow grow grow grow!

Soo nice to see new pictures after a 43 day lull!!

Barbaro looks just stunning with his glimmering coat. A great sign of good health. What an improvement from earlier photo's.

It would be great if Barbaro could go home to Lael Stables to be with those he loves and knows but the security issue is a big obstacle. Too many kooky people who could put the Jackson's, Barbaro and their other Horses at a high risk. He has become an icon and that could endanger the whole family.

Barbaro you are beautiful, courageous and we hope you can be a stud!!!! What a holiday gift to see these and hear the news.

Yes...the leg(s) will take some getting used to but he doesn't seemed bothered by it and the look on Dr. R's face says it all.

I'm so happy for the Jackson's. Now they will be able to return to the Preakness with something to look forward to. I look forward to the beautiful smile on Mrs. Jackson's face as she hands over the "Barbaro Stakes" trophy to the winner. What a fitting tribute to "our" boy.

As for (((Bobby's)))) future I have complete faith that the Jackson's will make the right decision for (((Barbaro))) and themselves. (I'm sure they don't want a swarm of Barbaro lovers overrunning their property..not that any of us would do that but there's always a small minority that will think of themselves first)

Susan E. - we have a sweet little tabby cat named Allie. She's very shy, and when she was a kitten, every time we'd pick her up and hold her, she'd get this look on her face as if she were being tortured but had to be polite about it.

So one of Allie's songs is: "Think of England, think of England, think of England, I love you. Don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me I love you."

    Very silly, but it fits.

Back to our mission please - rebutting the anti-slaughter ban people (pro-slaughter people).

From Alex's Update 1200 the other day:
Sharonlynn (Fan of Barbaro) who had this article published on horse slaughter a little earlier has more recently had two more articles published: Letter: Senators must listen to the people and Guest Opinion: Stop inhumane slaughtering of our horses to feed elite Europeans. Please review and add your thoughtful comments. (please go to Alex's update 1200 for working links; or someone make these blue/working, please. THANK YOU)

    UPDATE per CJ:
FOB sharonlyn (Sharon Crumb) reports that her followup anti-slaughter letter (linked up top by Alex in Update 1200) has drawn comments from pro-slaughter people which need to be rebutted. This is the letter dated 12/14/06 in the Wallowa County Chieftain entitled Senators Must Listen To The People. Here'e the link to that one:

Sharon reports there are some FOB's who are commenting after reading Ella's pro slaughter comment. THANK YOU - and KEEP IT UP!

She asked me to post this info on her behalf and hopefully attract some attention to the fact that because our voices are quiet, pro slaughter is feeling they can distort the truth.

FYI, I include here a post in the Wallowa County Chieftain by "Ella" commenting on Sharon's letter, followed by Sharon's rebuttal to it. Please read, and then go to the site and make your own comments, specifically addressing the pro-slaughter talking points. THANK YOU.

OF COURSE - THESE ARE THE SAME POINTS WE WILL NEED TO BE MAKING WHEN TALKING TO UNCOMMITTED OR OPPOSED LEGISLATORS in the month(s) to come.

    Posted: Tuesday, December 19, 2006
    Article comment by: Ella

There are constituents who DO NOT support the legislation. I called my senator and told him to oppose this legislation. I'm sure legislators have heard from both sides and are weighing their decisions seriously and considering the facts. For example:

    1. Horse processing is the most tightly regulated of any animal slaughter, and the only animal that has its transportation
    to slaughter regulated.

    2. Horse processing is the ONLY available source of FEDERALLY SUPERVISED humane euthansia for the nation's unwanted
    horses.

    3. Who is going to pay for and care for the 90,000 unwanted horses ANNUALLY that nwo go to processing facilities? Particularly the dangerous or bad-tempered horses. Do you suggest they be abondoned and left to fend for themselves? Or are all of the supporters of a ban going to open up their homes and wallets to these unwanted animals? Do you think our elected officials want to tell their constituents that the reason they had to raise taxes was to pay to feed a bunch of horses in a retirement home? Let's get universal healthcare for America's children before we start opening nursing homes for horses on Uncle Sam's buck.

    4. Some horse owners consider their animal LIVESTOCK. and the option needs to be preserved for the farmers and ranchers in this country that depend on their horses as assets. No one says that you HAVE to send your horse to a processing facility at the end of its life, but it does need to be there for people who need it. And that is their right to do so as a property owner as long as the horse is euthanized humanely, in accordance with the humane treatment laws that are currently in place.

    5. Maybe they listened to the American Veterinarian Association. They don't support a ban on horse processing because they know that in the long run it will be worse for the welfare of horses.

There are two sides to the story and your readers deserve to know that their representatives are listening to both sides and making informed decisions.

    Reply to Ella:

We all are well aware that people do not support a ban on slaughter. But, when every poll taken has 73% to 93% of Americans saying they want the slaughters stopped, how can you say the Senate listened? Look at the vote in the House of Representatives on Sept. 7, 2006. That vote was 263-146 in favor FOR A BAN ON SLAUGHTER! You called your Senators and so did I every single day since Sept. 7, 2006. Now with these polls, common sense would tell you that majority of calls coming in were to stop the slaughters. What happened here is the "Special Interests" were heard over each Senator's constituents.
How can you have the nerve to say that legislators are weighing their decisions seriously and considering the facts? The Senators did not consider anything relating to this bill. Thanks to some Senators who oppose it and put holds on it and monopolized the Senate floor, one being Conrad Burns, who put in a rider to kill our wild roaming horses and has pledged to not stop until there is not one left running THEIR land and it is their land. These horses were here long before I was.

Your facts are so wrong, horse processing is not tightly regulated. Do you remember the Senate voting to take the funding away from USDA? Then USDA going over them and having inspections privatized? Do you know that European Union law states that each horse carcass is to be inspected for Trichinae at the time of slaughter? QUOTE: Each horse carcass shall be tested for trichinae at the time of slaughter. Now, how is this possible when USDA funding was gone. Oh, that right, they must have decided to go test each carcass without pay. This was an agreement between USDA and EU so does not apply to private inspections as far as I know. Go read about it on the European Union Guidelines for Export. While there, remember to look at the long list of drugs that a horse going to slaughter should NEVER have taken. Bute is among them, the aspirin of horses.

Horse processing is not regulated when it is not being overseen by USDA. It is obvious that you are very pro slaughter but you do not know the facts as you are putting them down here.

Transportation is to be regulated but it isn't. I still am waiting to find out what the driver of the overturned slaughter truck in Missouri was in violation of, outside of his outstanding warrants, he was being fined for transport.

Horse processing is not the only source for humane euthanasia. Go see a video, these horses are shot over and over again with the Captive Bolt Gun and missing the mark, they are ALIVE and in pain when hoisted up by the rear leg, throat slit and bleed out. How can you even stand by that one? There is proof, from video and former workers that these horses are alive at time of butchering. If my government feels this is humane, I am appalled!

When slaughter was banned in California, the cruelty cases went down right along with the stolen horses. Makes one wonder,,,hmmm, I'm not gonna feed my horse anymore because he will be slaughtered soon, that is the neglect.

You ask who is going to pay for the care for the 90,000 unwanted horses a year. Which equals out to 1% of the horse population! Well there are at least 200 rescues, some are NOW going to the feedlots and buying the horses at the meat price to save them. Without slaughter, the killer buyers will not be attending auctions poising as "good homes" and the horse will be auctioned to someone who wants a horse. Families go to these auctions, even bring their kids in hopes of buying a family "companion". Without the killer buyer there to outbid them, these "unwanted" horses will all go to good homes. These horses will be bought for a companion and not a hunk of money from the slaughterhouse in a few hours. I agree with you about dangerous horses, but for 200.00 anyone can have their horse humanely euthanized by a vet and have to carcass removed or cremated. Bad tempered horses!!! Did you ever see what abuse these horses are suffering before slaughter? You really need to read stats and open your eyes to the real problem here. Look at the victims of the overturned slaughter truck in Missouri at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. They are finally starting to come around, some still will not trust a human's hands. So to say these horses will suffer a worse fate without slaughter is so wrong, they are suffering it with slaughter. No horse should be abandoned and it takes a cold hearted person to allow that horse to plow his fields, take him for rides, carry his children and then just abandon him because he serves no more "use". Cold, cold people are supporting slaughter, it's all about money to them. Talk to some Vets. My dogs Vet signed a paper saying she does not want AVMA to speak on her behalf when she does NOT support slaughter of horses. Any real Vet will not support it because they know our horses are full of drugs and in most cases it is 4 days from stable to table.

I'll tell you what, within 3 weeks a big group of us donated money to rescue horses and we raised 10,000.00 and did rescue horses from auction so I for one will give my last dollar to save these poor innocent horses. Face it, we who oppose horses being slaughtered in our country for overseas food consumption, will do everything needed to take care of the horses.

You got to be joking about property rights and all. This has nothing to do with property rights, this has to do with a good excuse to pocket some money on the brutal death of your loyal, trusting companion being slaughtered. And, to feed foreigners, have you no shame?
Tell you what, I want a box put on my federal tax return so I can donate my money each year to the horses that are saved.

I would not welcome my elected officials telling me they have to raise my taxes to feed the horses, not when they did not raise my taxes for allowing all three Belgium owned slaugherhouses to operate each being a 12 million dollar business a year and our government charges them 5 lousy dollars. Boy, I wish I could even make 25,000.00 a year without having to pay 2,000.00 in taxes.

You attack the horses being feed by the United States and say the money should go here and there.

Let's talk about the farmer's relief that Senator McCain blasted the senate for giving so much relief to farmers who were not suffering any real hardship. Let's crack down on the Agriculture Appropriates Bill and save some money that is being misused and apply that to these funds you mention.

How can you say the farmers and ranchers consider their horses as assets? If this were so, then why do they settle for only 200.00-400.00 for slaughter?

People do not need to take their horses to slaughterhouses to end their lives, do it the American way and have a heart, call a Vet and let your horse who served you well in life, die with dignity and peacefully go to sleep, not be poked, electrically probbed, yanked out of a truck he stood 24 plus hours, literally folded in half, wait in line to be butchered, be stabbed in the neck while waiting to go into the kill box, shot in the head with a 4 inch metal bolt, hoisted alive, throat slit, bled out, crying until he loses consciousness. He deserves a pleasant end to his life, by his appreciative family, not slaughter, it is not necessary. Even if there were an epidemic of disease in horses, a Vet could humanely euthanize the horse and cremate the body.

Horses are no different then our cats and dogs, except they are afforded protection where the horse isn't. Why is it right to protect the cats and dogs and not horses. Are you aware that miniature horses are now being used as service animals? Livestock, I think not, we Americans will never call them livestock, I did not grow up eating their meat, as I do livestock cows, pigs, chicken and turkey.

You choose to believe you have property rights to be inhumanely killing horses, property owners in general take care of their property, they do not abuse it.

Go to www.equineadvocates.com and see a slaughter in progress. You owe that much to the truth! [end of Sharon's post in reply to Emma]

Please go to that site and comment. THANKS.

Sorry this is so long. Thanks for listening. CJ for sharonlyn and the horses

    WOW

What great reports today!! New photos....they are wonderful. Thanks for the link, Lynda Hadn't read that earlier. It's a great article
And now we will celebrate the Barbaro Stakes. That is just so awesome.

Great reports except the news of Wire to Wire. what is up with that?? what would be an alternative for those times? gerbil races? ridiculous..

That right hind looks great. Consider how it looked before surgery. It is nothing short of miraculous that it is a weight-supporting limb, and one that evidently has no discomfort at all. Dr. Dean said it would always look different, but it looks pretty darn good to me. As Barbaro gains muscle-mass, it is sure to improve.

    ###
Great to see you here, Rick. So sorry about the loss of your sweet Ridgie. I think that Dr. Dean's comments are more pertaining to the recovery period, and the fact that the left hoof will never be a normal hoof, having had 85% of so removed. Imagine losing a nail down to the growth band, and the growth band has been affected by severe inflamation or injury. It would be very unlikely that the nail would grow out and be identical to the original nail. When a horse has had laminitis, it can be vulnerable to new infection which is one of the reason why Barbaro has had such close scrutiny and why the docs have used terms like "guarded" in describing his diagnosis. There are no "givens" in the recovery process for laminitis, and his recovery, along with the recovery from the horrendous multiple fractures, are absolutely miraculous. Besides having captured hearts all over the world, Barbaro will be "textbook" material along with his veterinary team. It is truly a marvel.

Okay...I'm in for the night. Worked from home today but HAD to go out for a bit. Sheeeeeez. My vehicle is a huge beast that loves bad weather and can climb nearly vertical grades, but when you can't see where you are going, that is another matter. Hope all my CO-NE sisters are safe and staying in tonight. Could we have a check in? Lisa, heard from you in Breckenridge.
Debbie from down south?? TLC in Highlands Ranch? Susan in Elizabeth? Barb lives close to me but I think she's out of town this week. LindaH you BETTER be home! :)

Yes, the Wire to Wire cancellation is bad news - we had a big TBA discussion about it yesterday. ESPN could easily save programming time by dropping the repeat rather than cancelling it outright.

If I could receive TVG I wouldn't be so annoyed, but as I've been watching it since Chris Lincoln was the main host, it's a blow.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I am here! In fact, I've already posted a couple times earlier today on this Board! Hope to keep posting and checking back, if this new storm expecting later today does not kill my power! Yep, this storm is bringing with it winds that could gust up to 50MPH in some areas, mostly north of where I live, but here in Snohomish the wind speeds could possibly reach 40MPH! The problem is that the trees are weak, the ground still saturated from last Thursday's storm. There are still thousands of people without lights and heat, too! Our local electric company, SnoPUD tells us that everyone here can extect power by tonight. Yippeee! Let's hope that no more power goes out when this new wet windy misery comes in!

They have come so far and it seems they are both looking "down the road" to the future. ( or it could be Mocha)LOL. These last few weeks have brought so much change. Dr. R, in his most cautious way, says there are still hurdles to overcome with the longterm care of Barbaro's left hoof. I know we will all be with him every step of the way until he can graze in a lush field of bluegrass or Laelgrass and be the horse with the courage of a lion.

Now that there is a Barbaro Stakes Race in Maryland, years from now, people will be reminded of how great a horse Barbaro was and is.
What a wonderful tribute to a horse who is etched in racing's history.

Thank you Alex for keeping the boards open until Boxing Day. I think of it as our special gift from you. Enjoy the extra holiday. How is it spent in the states? No wren-killing I hope or fox hunting. Eating, drinking and merriment sound like the order of the day!!!

What Great News Today!! New Pictures of Barbaro!!

I was a "bit" concerned but showed the pictures to my soon to be VET daughter and she was HIGHLY impressed with our boy!! Said that was a GREAT "shoe" they put on him and does a lot to help him in balance/walking, strength, etc. She also explained to me why that hoof looks different, but I will have to have her explain it to me again in ENGLISH TERMs.. ha ha. but basically it helps protect the hoof and support the "shoe fitting".

Alex, could you persuade the Wire to Wire people to blog here or set up a blog for all of you to keep us in the loop for equine news? We'd welcome them as part of the family...:)

Off topic - am noticing a neat thing from Stormy...when I walk up to him in the pasture, he comes over to me and gives me what I call a horse hug - wraps his head and neck around me, gets very close and we just hug. Ahhhhhh.....

Am very sleepy so will say goodnight.

    Barbaro might be Kentucky-bound
    By Jody Demling
    jdemling@courier-journal.com
    The Courier-Journal

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro could be coming back to his old Kentucky home within the not-so-distant future.

Barbaro co-owner Roy Jackson told The Courier-Journal on Wednesday that several farms in the Bluegrass State were “alternative plans” for the horse once he is released from the New Bolton Center, where the colt has been since breaking his right hind leg in the May 20 Preakness at Pimlico Race Course.

“We really haven’t finalized plans yet as to where he is actually going to go,” Jackson said. “But (Kentucky) is definitely an alternative. We’re in the process of trying to work all of that out and get things finalized.”

Jackson noted it was progress just to be talking about the fact that Barbaro could be leaving the hospital in Kennett Square, Pa., where his life was in serious danger for several months after suffering the injury.

“New Bolton has done their job for (Barbaro),” Jackson said.

Dean W. Richardson, chief of surgery at New Bolton, said in a release on Wednesday afternoon that Barbaro was doing fine but wouldn’t allude to when he would be released.

Co-owner Gretchen Jackson told several media outlets it could be as soon as the new year or as late as the end of January.

“There is no timetable at this moment concerning Barbaro’s discharge from the hospital,” Richardson said. “His comfort on both hind limbs is good, and his overall condition is excellent.”

Roy Jackson said a key reason for trying to get Barbaro to another destination within a few weeks was the weather in the Philadelphia area.

“We run into a problem here weather-wise,” he said. “With the snow and ice, he can not get out and move around and so forth and that’s the best thing for him now. We’re looking at alternatives where we can send him someplace and they might be able to be hand-walked and so forth. It will be good for him.”

Roy Jackson said there are other places “outside of Kentucky,” that could end up being where Barbaro is sent.

Scott Morrison, an equine-podiatry specialist at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, examined the horse on Tuesday.

A New Bolton release said the doctor did some work on Barbaro’s left hind foot and gave the hospital some recommendations.

“Barbaro is stable and comfortable, although we remain concerned about the long-term management of his left hind foot,” Richardson said.

Alex, Thanks for linking us to the terrific commentary by Dr. R. As someone from the outside looking in, I emotionally relived the past few months. But reading this was completely different then an article/commentary written by someone who really was detached from the situation. Dr. R and NBC were/are on the front lines.

I as really moved by the description about how to proceed after the Laminitis set in. You have that paragragh in your updates so I won't repeat it here. Just that it was one horse who loved life that convinced several extremely knowledgeable people to make the decision.

I have a date with my television early tomorrow so I'll end this here.

Have a great night Mr. B.

Hiya, Bobbey! What amazing pictures of you, sweet prince. Your big shoe on the (L) hind reminds me of ones that I wore during the disco era! Please tell Dr. Dean not to play Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" album for you, OK? I am grateful to see your bright eyes, pricked up ears, and lustrous coat. Your presence is balm for a troubled world. May your evening be a golden one. Please arise in the morning to seize the day as you have seized our hearts. #### Harriette, what a generous heart you possess!
To Susan E.: I love the idea of all FsOB converging at Pimlico for the first Barbaro Stakes in May of 2007. Perhaps those of us who live in the Northeast might try to take the Amtrak down to Maryland together. (We could get rowdy like those conventioneers did on the train in "Silver Streak".) If any of our FsOB from the UK or the UAE could join us, I'd gladly offer to put you up if you'd want to fly into Boston, CT, or RI. We could then train down from New London, CT.
Peace and good evening to all FsOB. RMH ####

    Hello Barbaro,

You have certainly put every Fan in the Christmas spirit today! We received wonderful news about you and then, new pictures!! Thank you Honey! I LOVE what you've given all of us for Christmas!

Now, are you ready for your blanket? Your Fans again tonight, in Colorado and surrounding states, are snuggling in nice and tight in their beds while the snow blows dangerously outside their windows. So, to unite with them, lets pull your blanket up high on your neck and tuck you in good and tight!

Sweet dreams are all yours tonight Honey. But, you won't be alone with your dreams! The gifts you have given us (and kept secret....you little stinker!) will lull all of your Fans into a soothing sleep where hope and reality become one. We love you Honey.

Tonight, let the healing continue and strength carry you through your day tomorrow. Barbaro, will you please give Dr. Richardson a gentle nuzzle to thank him from us for all of his loving care that he has shown to you? Thank you... I'll be here in the morning to check on the update.

Now close your eyes and start on those sweet dreams. I know I'll be seeing you in my dreams... I love you. Now sleep Honey. Good night. XXOOx

Great pictures of Barbaro, he has a presence that is unique - I am not worried about his leg -it may not be perfect but his eyes say it all.

    ## Mrs. Jackson's comments about contributing to a fund to support thoroughbreds from going to slaughter is the kind of concrete information I feel we need to present to congress next year. I thought we live in a democracy - evidently not when one person can stop a bill. I read about the anti-fighting bill in the House last year that had 353 co-sponsors and one member from WI put a hold on the bill and it never got to the floor. This is not my idea of democracy and our animals are paying for it. Very sad.

Thanks to everyone for prayers for Nala - she is eating, playing and running today. It is a relief that she is not suffering from the chemo today as she was yesterday.

Prayers to all the animals who are alone and scared.

Sorry for ESPN cancelling wire to wire. I luckily have TVG and their Sunday night show Finish Line is excellent. Too bad ESPN devotes so much time to athletes who are terrible role models and not to horses who are such a refreshing change.

Barbaro you're looking great - thanks for posting the pictures Alex it's great to see him again. And you're right his right hind hoof does have a big shoe on it - but who cares, as long as Big B is used to it - that's okay. Alex I know that everyone probably says the same thing to you - but thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I enjoy your posts so much and I'm so very happy for you that you have gained the confidence of the Jacksons who allow you to visit Barbaro and for Mrs. Jackson calling you with our daily updates.

Merry Christmas to you and enjoy your time off - will miss your posts - but Barbaro is doing so well, that knowing you will not be posting over the holidays is okay - you really did take on a big task, but as my Irish mother would say "You'll get your reward one day". Happy Holidays to everyone at TWR and to all FOBs.

    dear alex,
thank you so very much for the excellent updates and the photos, the excellent article by dr richardson.---
    .lessons learned from barbaro.
.i had not a dry eye..
looking at the photos wasboth thrilling..a walking miracle and also traumatic
..he is absolutely gorgeous and on that huge frame are four delicate looking legs..the bent quality of his healed leg, is a marvel but it also scared me too..
i have enjoyed the wonderful humor on the board and ##mike,##you are so right about the NBA-
    -dont even mention our knicks--
who ought to all be fired.
i am so ashamed of them.. thugs supreme..
when you see the stellar character of barbaro.
.his long journey and his daily courage..there are not many two leggeds in the professional athletic world to hold a candle to him'
'i see the character of all the nbc team..no one has exploited him --his owners are such extraordinary and humble souls, that they genuinely care about every detail.=.how to help bobby cope..
i see in the picture, that it is quite a challenge to hit all parts of his hooves at the same time..it keeps him veyr present when he moves..he is so smart that way..
i also feel the wash of the seven months of this journey..and the heart and courage of the FOB..
i am so grateful to alex for the creation of this site
    i learn so much --..
    what a world
.you all have become extended family --thank you for caring
..for making so many sacrifices to help all animals.
    .remember cubby? -
-the horses who have no hands to pull them out of harm and hell's way..
    some tapestry.
...joe toils daily with a song in his heart ..frozen water, crazy workmen who smoke near hay.
.and i am sure ,litter, as they put up walls..
i think every leader and politican who open their mouths ,should be recquired to go up in space and look down on our beautiful planet.
.and see that up there,. there is only the grace of nature and the cosmos
..no country has walls ,no boundaries separating people.in their nations...
    earthbound humans .
and then, there are the lessons of barbaro..
    power, grace,enduring grace..
may the diamond dust in the velvet night sky ..spread all over the rooves of your homes.
.may all go gently with themselves..and note the great muscle pounding in their being..their hearts.
.gold and chocolate..??? for sure.. ,blessed holidays to all---

Wow, I was also kind of horrified by the angle of Barbaro's right hind leg in today's NBC update. It's so crooked, it looks like it wouldn't hold his weight without breaking again. But the miracle is, IT IS, and he looks so good, and isn't wearing an IV for pain or antibiotics anymore. Look close, and you'll see what they meant when they talked about the corrective shoe with extended heel on his right hind hoof. That should help to take some of the crook out of his leg over time. Sounds like they've got management of his growing left hoof pretty much down, as well. So grateful to NBC for being upfront enough to show us these pix of our boy as he is now. It's a good sign that things are going well and headed in the right direction!

It has been a long time since I posted. I think Barbaro looks wonderful! While the angle may seem concerning to some - remember it is fused and does not bend like a "normal" ankle. The laminitic hoof looks great too. For those of you who asked about the concern of the left hoof - one concern is the strength of the hoof that grows back, another is the risk of it happening again. It is like losing a nail and then when it does grow back there is deformity in the quality of the nail and it is more susceptable to damage than a healthy nail.
Rick I hope that answers your questions.

That being said...Barbaro amazes me. What a perfect patient. He has done everything right and that is the #1 reason he is recovering. His team and family are wonderful and all the FOB have certainly contributed. I really think that if it wasn't for EVERYONE showing him that we all wanted him to stay with us he might have decided not to stay.

For those of you who are concerned about him going to Rood & Riddle - don't fret. It is a great place with staff every bit as experienced and caring as NBC. If the injury had happened in the Kentucky Derby he would have been sent to R & R. On a long term basis Barbaro will spend his days grazing, with a groom at his beck and call and lots of ladies. Sounds like a terrible job ... but someone has to do it!

All of the people on this site are an inspiration...every time I think that people can't pull together and do the right thing I only need to log in and prove myself wrong. Well done all.

Time to go walk the Ridgeback puppy. Good night all.

Your leg may not be perfect, but it signifies your courage. It is your badge of courage for all to see. You are winning your battle daily. Barbaro looks great in Pamie's video, so I thought I'd let you know that Marilyn's link worked! I had to smile during the video, after all, Barbaro had quite a toothy grin in many of the stills! He also really appeared to be enjoying himself, too! What a horse!

WEATHER UPDATE FOR THE PUGET SOUND AREA IN WA:
We are now under a Wind Advisory, meaning we can expect wind gusts of up to 50MPH! The ground here is soft, and many of the trees are weak and leaning precariously, some with branches barely hanging on so let's hope that our lights and heat stay on! So if you guys don't hear from me for a while, you will know what happened!

Will check back periodically! Good luck to you guys in Colorado, too! BRRRRRRR!!! Don't turn into a bunch of Popsicles and Icicles! We need you next year to help the horses!

BARBARO-Your leg may be a little crooked, you may have a slightly deformed hoof-You are still the Grandest Looking Big Ole Boy I ever did see! Who amongst us can say that they do not have an infirmity or two, or three? Man, I have had casts on! I know how limbs look afterwards! Those of us with arthritis and other debilitating physical afflictions can identify with the awkwardness of your new appearance. You are still the most beautiful horse I have ever layed eyes upon. To me, you are, and always will remain UNDEFEATED CHAMPION!! Love love love you!! Sleep well my pretty Big Ole Boy!!

Linda H. & Cheryl Jones & Lisa Leach-Colorado gals! OMG I saw the weather channel!! How is it possible to get that much snow in that small amount of time? Be careful...

Laura S.-I am hoping things are improving for your neck of the woods, but read you are expecting another storm??? !!! Please be careful...You do not turn into popsicle either!!

It was hot here yesterday, well, almost 70 degrees. Today was foggy, murky-like. It is supposed to rain. Goodnight and all be safe from weather.

Getting used to Barbaro's new look... He's looking just as beautiful as before. If getting past something can make you better and stronger -- our boy won't be scared of anything. His leg and hoof are the marks of a hero. Look at his eyes. They show it. If we want to get even more dramatic, the mark of a shaman is a scar or severe injury to an upper extremity. If the metal is still in the right hind, it's not going anywhere. Trusting that the finest treatments are reminding his hoof how to grow healthier by the day. Good night all!

You have given me the best Christmas present this Christmas, thank you for healing and doing all you should be doing. Just saw the piece on GMA - it was fantastic! Nothing but positives, focusing on Barbaro's will to survive. They showed Barbaro walking, and while he does have a "hitch in his giddy-up", he clearly looks comfortable with his right hind leg and he looked great! As Alex noted earlier, a FOB from New Jersey was interviewed, along with Dr Richardson.

I'm so glad they ended with "it's not about the money." People need to hear and see the truth about the genuine affection for this great horse!

Barbaro definitely has a hitch in his giddyup. And he has lost his athletic peak look from the Triple Crown Campaign. Takes a little getting used to, because we haven't seen him day to day. But, man, he is good, anyways. So good. It's almost enough to get a girl reaching for the tissues the Thursday morning before Christmas. Have a great day, everyone. Peace ~

Did anyone hear what was said on Good Morning America ? Barbaro to be moved, he needs a softer surfeits to walk on.
Was I hearing that right? It looked like the pavement was giving him trouble walking. Is that why they are going to move him. He needs grass to walk on. Are something that gives under foot.
Both Barbaro and Dr. Richardson looked happy and relaxed. Great to see them on TV

There's a possibility we'd try to get him out of the hospital where he'd be able to be walked on softer footing, because at this point his medical care is relatively modest," Richardson said.

Tears are running down my face after seeing the Good Morning America segment. Tears of joy but also bittersweet.

It really is a miracle that he is with us. And that he will go on to do great things, I have no doubt. If I were a betting person, I would bet on Barbaro going to stud. Despite the fact that there will be plenty of waiting to see how the hoof turns out.

    This horse is indomitable.

I look at all he's been through, and he never once gave up. Seeing Dr. Richardson choke up and say that the prognosis was poor, I realize just how near Bobby was to death. But it was that familiar face, those pricked ears, the calm interest in his eyes, the look that always seems to say, "So what? This isn't such a big deal." If he had been most horses, he would have been put down then, and it would have been a mercy.

Secretariat had an enormous heart. Lance Armstrong could handle oxygen as no other cyclist before or since. These sports figures are called freaks. Barbaro, too, is a freak in the nicest sense of the word. There was more there than just his will. His ability to handle pain and minimize it--there was a physical side to his recovery.

Seeing what he has gone through, I understand more clearly why it is impossible to save every horse. As it is impossible to save every human from devastating illness.

Everything worked to save this horse: New Bolton's proximity, Dr. Richardson, the wonderful owners who love him, Edgar pulling him up, Matz's wonderful training, Barbaro's acceptance of the sling, all the people who came together for him, our own prayers and stamina in staying with him, and most of all, the horse himself.

He is *the* story of the year. He is the one bright becon of hope in a world gone dark and ugly. And he reminds us that even when things are darkest, there is always hope.

Cheers, Barbaro. May you find those "receptive mares" and enjoy the life you have purchased with such pain, brilliance, grace, and wisdom.

    So sweet!

It looked on the video like he was lifting his right leg so high because he's used to the weight of the cast! It would be great if Bobby went someplace with a pool for water exercise - as long as it didn't mess with his left foot to do so.

    Keeping the faith..

For those FOBs considering a trip to Pimlico for the Barbaro Stakes ( I loved typing that out!), please consider buying tix early or inquiring about a group package if you have a good idea of how many are attending. Although I used to when I was younger, I no longer go to the track on Preakness Day because I cannot stand the crush of people. However , if you want any hope whatsoever of seeing the races, the best thing is to buy early. I also encourage you all to make it a weekend and come to the track on Black Eyed Susan Day ( the day before). I attend every year and you get to see some real quality horses on that day as well. Good luck with the planning.

Alex, as always, thanks for everything!

Sherry/AZ, sofa bed is ready for you...we'll take Amtrak down in May...:)

Was able to see the GMA video - again, tears were rolling down my face.

    ###
I was finally able to figure out who Michael Matz reminds me of - he seems to have many of the same qualities of a German Senior VP I supported from 2001-2003 - and who I miss to this day. The quiet determination, the quiet knowledge of being on a sure path, having very high standards and integrity, and being tenacious and never giving up. That is both Michael Matz and Manuel.

Anyway, it is a cloudy day here in Chester County so Barbaro should be able to go grazing today. I wish I had a ranch with lots of grassy land for Barbaro to come for the next phase of his recovery.

A Prayer to The Most High God For Our Barbaro

Mighty God, thank You for the priveledge of prayer- for being able to approach Your throne of grace and love boldly, as we do now. We praise and worship You, our Holy God, as we marvel at Your creation, plants and creatures large and small, our Universe- so vast to us yet small to You.

Father, thank You for Barbaro's life. We know that in You we all have our breath of life, our very being and through Your unmerited grace, we take one breath after another, each a gift from You. We thank You for all of the answered prayers on behalf of Barbaro. We know that it is You, through people and circumstances here, that has brought him this far. And so Father we come to You collectively again. We come to offer Barbaro up to You again- that You would again show him mercy and healing. Father, You know all things and indeed, You already know what we are preparing to ask You for Barbaro. Father God, we lift his left hind foot up to You, the one with laminitis, that has been aggresively treated. We pray in the name of Your Son Jesus, the Christ, that You would cause this hoof to be restored to the condition in which You first created it. We pray that you would send You messengers into our realm to accomplish this task. We know that all You have to do is merely think it Father and it will be so. Father, we need You now. Please send Barbaro a Christmas miracle. We pray for all those who are treating him- for the staff at New Bolton, for all the doctors and nurses, for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, for Michael and Peter, for Alex, and for all those on this board. We ask these things in Jesus name, and we will be careful to give You God all the praise and glory. Amen.

I started to live in her shadow until my wise mother told me I had a life of my own to live, and I needed to get on with it. I still miss her very much ,and wish I had her with me, but life says no. She is always with you no matter what. Sweetie try to live your life and things will be OK. Keep all your wonderful memories close. She would want you to be happy, and she will be happy you are.

Good Morning everyone - good morning Barbaro. Just watched your apperance with Dr. Dean. Had to watch it twice because I was crying so hard the first time (tears of joy). You look so fantastic and we are all so blessed this Xmas because you, Dr.Dean, the NBC staff and of course your owners are TRUE miracles. I saw your big smile - I bet that was especially for all of us FOB's - we love you dearly Barbaro. Have a great day.

Susan - Felix is one lucky guy!!!! You are so amazing to stay with him this Xmas. We'll all be with you in spirit. Thinking of you, Lizzie and of course Felix daily. Prayers and Hugs.

Pam, the video made me cry. I've been crying all day. I love that you concentrated on him and his beauty and stregth, and not on that awful day. It was inspiring.

Renee, thanks for the kind words and the knowledge. I'm just stressing about what I may be facing medically right now. She and I talked about everything. I still talk to her, but it's harder to hear the calming "don't you worry, you will be fine".

Even GMA couldn't leave those pictures from the Preakness alone. I wish they would all just STOP using those. It's time to focus on the good things and the progress instead of the past and that horrible accident.

You always find a way to say what I am thinking, and it comes out sounding better when you say it than it would have if I had said it. (What did I just say?? LOL)

Listen, if you're worried about losing your job at the Bistro - FORGET IT!! You're way to good to let go and besides, I don't listen to Kathy J. anyway.

    Love you.

My question is... We all know Barbaro was walking stiff with the cast and I'm sure the splint, he is still doing the same thing. Is this habit and will it eventually go away or is this how the sweetheart will be? It does give him character.

    Cora,

Thanks for the reassurance! Hopefully I will not have to request any time off. I would miss my job at the Bistro so much!

I'm going to mix up a pitcher of Barbarotinis for the lunch crowd. . . or just drink them myself.

Designgirl wait for me I want to spin with you. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Posted by: Renee Antaya at December 21, 2006 5:24 PM

    Renee:

I suspect him raising that leg has more to do with not feeling the weight of the cast anymore. That will take a bit of getting used to.

I think this is probably similar to what the TW horses do after sore-ing.

There is a prayer request thread in "The Sanctuary" for designgirl if anyone wants to add their thoughts to it.

    WE BELIEVE IN BARBARO!

God Bless you, Bobby Jackson! God Bless you!!

Love you so much!! Mints all around!!

For all FOBs in the winter storms, thinking of you, please be careful!

And hugs & prayers to all in need, two legs and four legs. . . .

Ladies - am I the Norm (from Cheers) at the Bistro?? Can I have my own chair to spin on???

Posted by: Donna & Cookie at December 21, 2006 5:27 PM

RENEE part of it may be because he is still getting used to not having a giant cast on it. He had it on for so long that it's probably fixed in his head. Mabe he will walk with it more straight later. I noticed when they showed a front view of him walking that the leg made a bit of a circle and got in front of the other hind leg, and his other leg swung out a bit too, thankfully so, or he would have tripped himself. Hopefully that will correct itself too.

A special chair with your name on it in gold!!

    Posted by: Cora-IL at December 21, 2006 5:31 PM

I think that's probably what the "light physical therapy" he's doing is for. Anytime you're in a cast for such a significant amount of time you (person or horse) need a lot of physical therapy just to get used to using it again.

In a weird way, I was glad to see he's taking it real easy on that leg. If he's being cautious not to use it too much, maybe we won't have to worry so much about laminitis in that foot - I've been worried about that.

I agree! But Renee has the seat at the end of the bar . . . and the area just under that seat (she falls off sometimes). We need to get a special chair for Renee too.

Donna, you can have your choice of any other chair at the bar! Welcome! Shall I mix you up a pitcher now? Renee, for here or to go?

According to this article, the Kenticky Horse Park has been ruled out by the Jacksons as a possible place for Barbaro to go.

    http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=36811

    Quotes;
Jackson, who with his wife Gretchen owns Barbaro, ruled out the Kentucky Horse Park as a possible location where the winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) go once he leaves the equine medicatl facility at the University of Pennsylvania.

“I wouldn’t think that would make a whole lot of sense,” Jackson said of the published report that the horse park in Lexington, Ky. could be Barbaro’s new home once he leaves New Bolton. “I don’t think that would be one of the alternatives.”

To all who enjoyed Jake's post earlier, here is the extended version from her website. It is even more beautiful, and eloquently says what so many of us are thinking and feeling:

    By J. Carson Black

    The Long Road to Recovery
    December 21st, 2006
Tears are running down my face after seeing the Good Morning America segment on Barbaro’s recovery. It is hard to look at the crooked leg, the way he lifts it, and think of how he dominated the Kentucky Derby. But the thing is, he doesn’t seem to mind, so why should we? He is here. He can graze and feel the sun on his back and a breeze in the shade. He can hear soft voices telling him good things. And being an intelligent horse, he has a deep interest in everything he sees. He is alive; more alive than most people.

I selfishly cry for my loss. For his agility and athleticism and ability to run. But I also cry from relief and gratitude, because it looks as if he’s made it. His legs are bandage-free. The catheter has been removed from his neck. He will soon be leaving the ICU on the way to further adventures, and eventually, I believe, he will be able to go to stud.

I look at all he’s been through, and he never once gave up. Seeing Dr. Richardson choke up and say that the prognosis was poor back in July, I realize just how close Barbaro was to death. If he had been most horses, he would have been put down then. And it would have been a mercy. But it was Barbaro’s familiar face that made the difference; those pricked ears, the calm interest in his eyes, the look that always seems to say, “So what? This isn’t such a big deal.”

Secretariat had an enormous heart. Lance Armstrong could handle oxygen as no other cyclist before or since. These sports figures are called freaks. Barbaro, too, is a freak in the most generous sense of the word. There was more there than just his will. His natural ability to handle pain and minimize it—there was a physical side to his recovery.

Seeing what he has gone through, I understand more clearly why it is impossible to save every horse. As it is impossible to save every human from devastating illness.

Everything worked in Barbaro’s favor: New Bolton’s proximity to Pimlico where the Derby winner broke down; the brilliant surgeon, Dr. Richardson; his wonderful owners, Gretchen and Roy Jackson. There was also Edgar Prado’s dressage-perfect ability to pull him up, Michael Matz’s wonderful training regimen, Barbaro’s acceptance of the sling. All the people who came together for him, our own prayers and stamina in staying with him. But most of all, the horse himself.

He is the story of the year. He is one of the few bright beacons of hope in a world gone dark and ugly. And he reminds us that even when things are darkest, there is always hope.

Cheers, Barbaro. May you find those “receptive mares” and enjoy the life you have purchased with pain, brilliance, grace, and wisdom

    Thanks, Jake,for the wonderful words.

The Bistro bar chairs need nets at the bottom to catch the poor patrons that slip out of them. Or maybe cork flooring would do the trick and break the falls!
