Barbaro Updates: 165

updates are now here.

Update 1232: Merry Christmas! My christmas begins by heading in to Fair Hill to ride Hawty Creek. A couple of nice Christmas articles:

Jack Ireland writes: Here's hoping Barbaro is Horse of Year. Of course we would all like that here I think! Realistically its not too likely but I think he clearly performed most impressively on a single day (KY Derby) and is now capturing everyone's imagination with his performance in his most important race.

Steve Haskin writes: Merry Christmas, Barbaro. It includes the following excerpt:

"Barbaro's been receiving lot of Christmas cards and holiday cards," said Jennifer Rench, New Bolton's marketing and communication coordinator. "He received a beautiful winter blanket from Churchill Downs with his name and the Derby logo embroidered on it. And his fans sent a Christmas tree for Barbaro and for New Bolton Center with beautiful glass hand-painted ornaments on it. On each one is a fan's name and where they're from. The tree is in the lobby of the hospital.

"Gift baskets have been coming pretty much every day, filled with carrots, apples, peppermints, and horse treats for Barbaro, and for the other patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Barbaro loves peppermints. Last week, he received a gorgeous wreath made out of carrots. It was really incredible. Some people have also sent gift baskets for the staff, containing things like coffee and chocolate."

Update 1231: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). Mrs. Jackson just called after her morning visit with Barbaro.
update 9:00 am, sunday, december 24

Update 1230: Japanese superstar Deep Impact is now retired after a facile win in his final start: DEEP MAKES LASTING IMPACT. Lets hope he can follow in his father's footsteps and become a sensational stallion.

Update 1229: This is the article Mike Jensen was working on when I caught up with him at New Bolton last week: Barbaro could receive the best present of all. It includes the following excerpt:

Sweeney pointed to a peppermint wreath in the corner of her office, and Churchill Downs sent a winter blanket for the recovering Kentucky Derby winner.

Other fans have written Christmas carols for Barbaro and sent them to New Bolton. Someone delivered a wreath made of baby organic carrots and a Christmas tree of green apples.

He has also received a custom-made halter, an embroidered blanket, a Santa hat, and even his own stocking.

And what else do you get for the horse who has everything?

"There's now a star named Barbaro and a star named New Bolton Center," Sweeney said. Both are in Constellation Hercules, named and paid for by "Grandma Bea" in the Poconos.

When I was visiting Barbaro yesterday someone mentioned a lovely bouquet of yellow roses had recently been delivered. As I was getting ready to leave I saw another gift arrive (more edible).

Update 1228: My fifth visit with Barbaro.
Today I was to meet Tom (the Jackson's farm manager) and make sure I am familiar with everything that needs to be done with Barbaro as the plan is for me to substitute for Tom on Christmas day. I got to New Bolton a little early so I could hang another poster on the outside fence. Once completed I went to the ICU. I was not sure if Tom was already inside so I put on the appropriate wear and went inside. Tom was not there yet, and Barbaro was fast asleep. I left him be and went back outside to wait.

Tom arrived shortly thereafter along with his wife Kathy. We had quick introductions and then went inside. Tom went to work with Barbaro, cleaning him up and getting him ready to go outside. Once he was ready I led Barbaro outside and we walked up to his grazing spot and he dropped his head to graze. Tom Kathy and I were chit chatting as Barbaro continued to graze (talking about Barbaro of course). I then led Barbaro around for about five minutes and then continued to let him graze. It was a nice bright afternoon with a bit of a breeze. Barbaro has a blanket on when he goes outside and is just very relaxed. We stayed out for about forty minutes in total, I then led him back inside to his stall.

Once inside I tied Barbaro back up and Tom went back to work tidying him up. Along the way I met a couple more of the staff working in the ICU, one of whom will also be there for christmas day. Another very pleasant visit with a very cool horse. We left Barbaro at about 2:45 pm (having arrived at just after 1 pm) and I am making this update from New Bolton before heading up to New York for the afternoon.

Gator Nation was fourth at Laurel today, only just beaten for third. Tim said he cooled out well after the race.

Update 1227: Mrs. Jackson called (11 am) after her morning visit with Barbaro. Barbaro remains comfortable. He was laying down when Mrs. Jackson arrived, he got up and enjoyed his Lael grass.

Was lighting candles for The Fog and Barbaro.
First time Barbaro was not the first name on the list of groups. Td2 is now first, who is that?
Anyone know?

Way to go Barbaro, laying down when Mrs. Jackson arrived, up to enjoy your Lael grass. You have a great mom!

I posted this last night but thought it would be neat for many of you horsy folks that have spent many a holidays like this. It was sent to me by the wonderful lady who adopted my Jessie....you can see why I'm thrilled with the home she got!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL........

It's the night before Christmas, we're out in the barn
Blanketing horses to keep them all warm
They're eating their dinners, tucked in cozy stalls
Not aware that it's Christmas or any special day at all

They can dream of spring pastures from their pine-scented beds
No visions of sugarplums dance in their heads
But we people are thinking of merry parties and such
Maybe feeling a little sad at missing so much

This season is special but the horses don't know
We've got work to do before we can go
We finish the chores and head on inside
To get ready for dinner and our own yuletide

It's nearly midnight, the carols are sung
I remember a story I was told when I was young
How at midnight on Chris tmas Eve
The creatures of the barnyard can speak to us with ease

I am called to the barn, I wade through the rain
I know I must go, I can't really explain
I slide open the door, pause for a while
Then slowly walk down that dimly lit aisle

A nicker from Casey, a wink from JD
Sleepy old Alibi waking to see
Tucker rustling his bedding, a snort soft and light
Each horse gave a greeting as I walked through the
night

I thought about parties bright lit and warm
The ones we don't go to 'cause we have the barn
And vacations and holidays that we don't get
When we're working long hours for bills to be met

Walking all the way to the end of the aisle
I stop to stroke Bonnie, it brings me a smile
She snuffles my face, hot breath on my skin
It starts me to thinking about my horses, my kin

I could be at parties with laughter and mirth
But where I am right now is the best place on Earth

Hello fellow fans,

Wonderful to hear ACN

I posted this very early this morning and thought I would post again. Very touching, I thought.

The Horses Prayer;

To Thee Master I offer my prayer; feed me, water and
care for me, and when the day's work is done,
provide me with shelter, a clean dry bed, and a
stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort.
Always be kind to me. Talk to me, for your voice
often means as much to me as the reins. Pet me
sometimes, that I may serve you more gladly and
learn to love you. Do not jerk the reins, and do not
whip me when going uphill. Never strike, beat or
kick me when I do not understand what you want, but
give me a chance to understand you. Watch me; and if
I fail to do your bidding, see if something is wrong
with my harness or feet.
I cannot tell you when I am thirsty so give me
clean, cool water often. I cannot tell you in words
when I am sick, so watch me, that by signs you may
know my condition. Give me all possible shelter from
the hot sun, and put a blanket on me, not when I am
working, but when standing in the cold.
Never put a frosty bit in my mouth; first warm it by
holding a moment in your hands.
I try to carry you and your burdens without a
murmur, and wait patiently for you long hours of the
day or night. Without the power to choose my shoes
or path, I sometimes fall on the hard pavements
which I have often prayed might be of such a nature
as to give me a safe and sure footing. Remember that
I must be ready at any moment to lose my life in
your service.
And finally, O Master, when my useul strength is
gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or
sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured or
starved to death; but do thou, my Master, take my
life in the kindest way. And your God will reward
you here and hereafter. You will not consider me
irreverent if I ask this in the name of Him who was
born in a stable. Amen

I too want to wish all my FOB family the most wonderful holiday season ever! I have come to know so many of you and the depth of your compassion for those needing your love and prayers. You are all amazing wonderful people.

Alex - what can I say that hasn't been said. You are a wonderfully multi-talented man who keeps the estrogen level on the board under control (no small feat either buddy). You are much appreciated and I wish for only the best for you and yours. Have a wonderful holiday!!!

Good Morning everyone. It is a beautiful day here in Vegas as it is each day we have good news on our boy! I am probably heading to Shiloh to drop off some blankets and treats for the horses from all FOB's. I am also taking the Barbaro beanie baby with me for them to keep to bring them luck in the new year. May all of the best of health and happiness be with all of you, Barbaro's caretakers and family, all of the horses needing a bit of luck right now, and our boy, it is all uphill in 2007. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.

Precious Barbaro: Thanking our Father for the best Christmas gift ever......YOU. May He continue to keep you in good health and continue to work His miracle in your healing.
Father, thank you for the "Miracle of Barbaro"

Lost in the Fog: Missing you during this holiday time.........I thank my Father everday for sending you to us. I know you are so happy running and playing with your friends in our Father's beautiful pasture. Will continue to keep your candles glowing.
Father, thank you for "The Fog"

Barbaro Family: May our Father give you and your family---furry ones included--a very Merry Christmas. This is one Christmas that I will remeber for as long as I live because I have the love and closeness of my Barbaro Family. Have a great day everyone.

Candles and prayers to all in need and to all our "furry" companions that need healing, too.

Thank you Alex and Mrs. Jackson's for the "wonderful" updates on our Precious Barbaro.

###
Debbie in L.A.: I think that Td2 must be someone in the military. This is the impression I got from reading some of the prayers.

FYI: Even thought Dr. Richardson says that Barbaro's healing is due to "science"......I remember him stating one time that when he is around Barbaro that he can sense that he is in the "midst of greatness"...sounds like something that comes from our Father. Just my opinion.

Re: SAN FRANCISCO ZOO

An unfortunate accident at the San Francisco Zoo, the tiger injuring its keeper, brought to light the fact that they still use horse for feed. Those who watched the Congressional hearings this summer for HR 503 heard the National Zoo testify they no longer do, because of the public outcry of its visitors. HS Industry reps hinted that passing HS legislation will make it unprofitable to supply zoos, and put an end to that, too.

I emailed the following to the San Francisco Zoo. Below is contact info for the zoo. If you decide to send a message, please be mindful of representing ourselves with compassion, empathy for the injured keeper and constructivenes.

NEWS PIECE

SF Zoo emails:

marketingmail@sfzoo.org

mediarelations@sfzoo.org

animals@sfzoo.org

"I am writing with reference to the unfortunate incident with the tiger that injured its keeper. My very best wishes for your employee's complete and speedy recovery, and to her family at this difficult time.

Her health is the most important thing. Yet the incident couldn't help but publicize the fact that your zoo still feeds horse meat. The National Zoo testified before Congress last August that it no longer uses horse as a food source, in response to the overwhelming wishes of its visitors. The vast majority of Americans want to bring an end to the inhume practice of horse slaughter, and legislative efforts are underway in DC to do that in 2007.

Please consider the appearance that your practice of feeding horse meat conveys to the public. If something good can come from this unfortunate incident, maybe it can be honoring the community values of American with regards to horses. Just a suggestion, but perhaps the National Zoo in DC, as the standard bearer for the country, could be a source of information about more humane sources of feed for the animals in your care.

Again, my sincerest wishes for a speedy and complete recovery to your employee and support to her family.

Thank you,

I have my Christmas miracle -- Barbaro is truly on the road to recovery. Thank you God for all the good you have done this year. Thank you Barbaro for putting the spotlight on the anti-horse slaughter legislation; everyone will work hard for it to pass next year. And thank you God for my little maltese Pepi, who is now on the long road to recovery from his ACL surgery. If Barbaro could recover, I know my dog will be fine! And we will never forget The Fog and all horses who passed this year.

Merry Christmas to Alex, Bobby and all members of the Barbaro Nation.

I have been blessed by all that has happened since the day of the Preakness. Although the injury to Barbaro was horrible, thankfully he is still with us and is on the mend. The discovery of this site has truly been life changing for me. I feel honored to be part of this great group. I read the following recently and thought I would share it. I feel it is appropriate considering the battle we are in to close the horse slaughterhouses. From CNN.com--kewl!

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Bono -- the Irish rock star, anti-poverty campaigner, and philanthropist -- has been awarded an honorary British knighthood, the British Embassy in Dublin said on Saturday.

"The British Embassy in Dublin takes great pleasure in announcing that Her Majesty The Queen has appointed Bono to be an honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work," according to an embassy news release.

The British ambassador to Ireland, David Reddaway, is to give Bono -- a member of the rock group U2 -- an "insignia of this honorary award" after New Year's in a ceremony in the Irish capital.

The embassy pointed out that titles such as "Sir" or "Dame" do not come with such honorary awards, "conferred on citizens of countries of which The Queen is not Head of State."

Bono is an Irish citizen. Bob Geldof, the Irish rock star who organized the Live Aid concerts, got the same award in 1986.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the award is well-deserved for Bono's "remarkable" humanitarian work and for his "outstanding contribution" to music with U2.

"I'll leave it to others far more knowledgeable than me to talk about U2's music. All I'll say is that, along with millions of others right across the world, I am a huge fan.

"But I feel a little more qualified to talk about your personal commitment to tackling global poverty and, in particular, to Africa," Blair said in a letter to Bono posted on the prime minister's office Web site.

"I want personally to thank you for the invaluable role you played in the run up to the Gleneagles G8 Summit.

"Without your personal contribution, we could not have achieved the results we did. So thank you and I look forward to continuing to work together to maintain momentum on Africa, and ensure leaders around the world meet the promises they have made."

I love how he describes your Kentucky Derby performance "...the first demand of the racing world is that 3-year-olds be at their best on the first Saturday of May. Dearest Barbaro:

My love to you, and all your family. I am so thankful for all those that love you, and care for you so tenderly.

So thankful for all the updates that are given to us each day. How greatly they are appreciated.

Bless your heart, I know you are not yet used to the new shoe that has been put on your right hind foot, but you will get more adjusted each day. Please walk carefully and take good care of yourself. You are smart, as Dr. Richardson said, and learn quickly. Please stay safe, and warm during these cold wintry days.

You can't help but know that we all love you. With all the tenderness and love that is going into your care by your family and caregivers, I believe you understand you are special, and very much loved.

I am not anxious for you to leave New Bolton, but when you do, I pray that you will continue to receive as much love and care as you have become accustomed to. May God bless you always.

ShelleyA.- I read your poem posted yesterday and was compelled to reread it today,And this angel who adopted your Jessie wrote this awesome reading? Amazing!

Janice-Your anonymous poem is spoken from the real working farm man/woman's position. It is such a true take on what is right with farmfolks who can and do take care of their beloved animals. They give their lifeblood to keep their farm and their animals safe from harm. They are the backbone of our country.

Instead of hurrying off to go bask in the glow of ballrooms and expensive champagne, they instead bask in the glow of lantern light in a barn, surrounded by the sweetness of hay and chickens and horses. This is my version of "It's a wonderful life" I would much rather pet a horse, play with a goat, feed the chickens than dance with some stuffshirts that are wasted on sweet champagne and smell of escargot!

AHEM--I totally got the poems backwards--the one post to Shelley A. goes to Janice and vice versa--SORRY I posted without verifying which poem was the one about the barn!! DANG

THEY ARE BOTH great poems regardless if I did make the stupid mistake!!

A friend sent me this email about theanimalrescuesite.com, which seems to be legitimate (looks like it's for dogs and cats). If you click on the donation box, the website's sponsors will donate to the rescue fund. There is no charge to you when you click on it. I'm going to bookmark the site so I can click on it often. If anyone knows of any problems with this charity, please let us all know! Here's the email I received:

"Subject: Rescue Food for Animals

I have checked this through www.snopes.com and it is a legitimate need.

Subject: Rescue food
Please, pass this site along to everyone on your mailing lists.

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. (Weight Watchers is one of the sponsors!)

Here's the web site!

Click on this link, and when the site opens, click on the purple box that says Feed an Animal for free. That's it! Pass it along to people you

Happy Holidays to Barbaro, Roy & Gretchen Jackson, Dr Richardson & entire staff @ NBC, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Grooms & Hotwalkers, Alex, Tim & Kennett Square Florist..Merry Christmas to anyone & everyone who has been with Bobby since his birth..Love from Clearwater, Fl.

Rushing off, but for the moment I want to thank Susan in Saratoga for taking the time to remind the SF Zoo about the ethical considerations of feeding horsemeat - and the potential negative aspects for their own publicity machine - after the injuries to a tiger trainer. Every opportunity to remind the public about horse slaughter is another potential push to end this practice. Susan - maybe you should send this letter directly to the SF Chronicle...

Secondly, in reading Dr. R's comment that Barbaro's ongoing recovery is just "science", I can't help but recognize all the little miracles along the way. The fact that NBC and Fair Hill have not suffered an intense winter from the middle of November, but instead have had and are having a relatively gentle lead into this darkest of seasons - 60 degrees today?? - is also a miracle. It has allowed Barbaro to experience a Christmas at NBC while also going outside to graze during the day, helping those muscles regroup, helping him regain his step, soak up some real sunshine. To me, it is all a miracle. It is giving the Jacksons adequate time to make the right decision, to enjoy the holidays, and to bask in the public gratitude which is so well deserved. This is a winter which will be remembered for a very special holiday gift, and indeed it is a miracle.

To all, stay safe, stay healthy, it is an honor to be here with you.

Hi All,

I was in a gift shop here in Ct and came across a small horse key chain that when you squeeze is belly says...Giddyup, starts to laugh wildley then says neigh and starts to laugh widley again. He is the funniest thing I have. He is Brown with a black mane, and white face and his tongue is hanging out of the corner of his mouth and he is smiling. He is a must have for horse lovers. He will be going to work with me.

NANCY JOHNS - prayers for healing for Marilyn and her family, although those of us who are owned for four-legged babies know that it doesn't come quickly. I hope she can be consoled at the thought that although Chester has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, he is whole and healthy and romping happily - perhaps with my one-and-only dog, Chipper, a beagle/fox terrier mix (BEST of each breed, fortunately not the worst) who lived from 1965-1981.
To my this is just the worst time of year for any type of tragedy, but we've certainly heard lots of sad news right here on this board...it's all part of the "plan" I guess, but I can't begin to understand!

I hope you read all the comments to you RE the link for Pammie's video "Simply the Best". Check out the names of the people who wrote the comments telling you not to be upset, explaining the problem with the particular site name, letting you know that you are one of us - those who love Barbaro and want the best for him in every way possible. These are some of the finest people who "inhabit" this site and I hope it is their comments that touch your heart and give you back your Christmas spirit. I usually don't have time to read the "comments" section and stay over on the Discussion Boards as a result, so my name is probably not familiar to people in this area, but I recognize the names of people like Cheryl Jones, Rosemary, Ann, Cora and many more and they are people I would be proud to have come to my defense if (when!) Barbaro has something to sing today.

Carrots roasting by an open fire
Nurses tending to my toes.

Dreaming of
my days wire to wire...
I won every race
- that Michael ever chose.

Everybody knows
I wanted to be triple king.
But,
it wasnt to be so.
Now,
it seems,
I'll do far greater things
than I could
ever dream
to know.

I know that it's
been tough some days,
You've kept my spirits up
with all your loving ways.

To ev’ry F O B,
You're in my heart.
I know that you've been
right here with me
from the start.

And so,
I'm offering this simple phrase
to every single
one of you.
Altho’ it's been said
many times,
Many ways;
I love all of
you too.

one of the biggest lessons i am learning alongside BARBARO and FOB,
and the creator and bridge builders ALEX AND TIM,
that there just might be another dimension--fourth,fifth,string
theories,another dimension in which
to travel
...beyond our imaginations..based in faith, love, and trust--
look out,not down, dear hearts.
..this hope,
manifested before our eyes
proclaims in my eye's mind,
that barbaro will not have suffered in vain, nor anyone else in his family
,close and beyond boundaries
grateful beyond measure
the snort, sniff and tongue of articulating his mints and muffins and
cubes.
..always brave,always listening
god, is in the details..the say..'

my hero, through and through
the doctor,as fine as man as you could want,
who walks strongly by his side ..the rider who brought him there..
followed only-- his heart and soul
the jacksons ,
filegre golden souls... walk the other mile, thousands for time to note..
look out,not below..bless all bless close, bless over and above.
barbaro

Barbaro get a vote for 3year old colt of the year

Go down to the bottom of the page.
Pine Island gets his vote too!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at December 23, 2006 11:01 PM

Three-Year-Old Colt or Gelding: Barbaro. Racing is fortunate when it has one standout 3-year-old but last year was one of those rare occurrences when it had two. Alas, they competed against each other for about eight seconds in the Preakness, before unbeaten Barbaro was pulled up with a career-ending injury. Bernardini won that day and established his own measure of greatness in the Travers before finishing second in the BC Classic, making the choice a very difficult one but, for better or worse, the first demand of the racing world is that 3-year-olds be at their best on the first Saturday of May. Barbaro was and he met that challenge with a performance for the ages.

Three-Year-Old Filly: Pine Island. Through the year, she matured into another classic filly from the Phipps stable before tragically breaking down at the Breeders' Cup. Her style was a steady drive from the half-mile pole to the wire and her talent and tenacity carried her home first more often than not against the best of her division, highlighted by her heroic charge down the stretch in the Alabama. She will be missed. Runners-up: Wait a While, Bushfire.

Came on to wish everyone the merriest and best of all holidays, and I do, but having read Dr Dean's comments (the link above) about crediting science alone for the saving of Barbaro, now I want to relate something about that night last May when we all struggled with the shock and dismay of the Big Boss's awful accident. I didn't know anything of Dr. R; not even his name; I knew nothing of Bolton Center. I didn't know where they were taking the Boy; only that he had not been put down and they were going to operate. As I went to bed that night, I began to pray. It's the kind of prayer I prayed that I wish Dr. Dean could know about.

I have prayed many different sorts of prayers in my life; some perfunctory; some selfish; pretty intense but selfish; some by rote; some rather obligatory because they were suggested. This time was very different, and I am prepared to say that in my entire long life I have never, ever prayed more earnestly, from the heart and soul. I can't explain that; this for a horse and one I had seen run only once before. What I can explain is what I did not pray for -- I did not pray to God to "save Barbaro" or anything like that, as if He were an entity Who could have waved a wand or pointed a finger and wrought the miracle.

What I prayed for was that the hands of the surgeon would be strengthened and that he would be enabled to use his clearest and best mind and heart and all his knowledge and experience and expertise to the very best advantage to help this gorgeous, gallant, beloved creature. I prayed the same for all those helping and surrounding.

Benjamin Franklin said that the longer he lived the more convincing evidence he saw that God governs in the affairs of men...If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, he asked, is it probable that an empire could rise without His aid?

I too believe that God governs in the affairs of men. I believe that God works through men, through people. Whence comes the spirit and the strength; whatever we call the Creator, I don't know and haven't the words. But I think many of us see the hand of God in the saga of Barbaro from the moment we recognized his greatness in the Kentucky Derby to the accident and beyond, to all the good for him and other horses and animals and our own selves that has occurred.

Dr. Dean does not want to call it a "miracle", and that's o.k., because he's right that it was never anything that came about as if by magic; some unseen force pushing a button and bingo!

At the same time, it is not possible or believable that the saving thus far of Barbaro could have been accomplished without the special strengthening help, even the resolve, that has come to one who was receptive, from a place, a dimension none of us would dare to describe.

Science of course! Dr Dean is a man of science devoting his life to the cause of animal healing and welfare. He himself cannot determine exactly what will succeed and what will not, who will be saved. But he does his best, and who is not to say that when an extraordinary case presents, an extraordinary application of support is not there too through the earnest prayers we offer up?

Dr Dean had a remarkable insight too when he thought of managing the Boy's pain to give him a chance at life that others would not have thought of or considered. Is this insight a common thing, a common event? I don't think so. Something borne of inspiration is not easily explained in strictly human terms. Even human beings are not easily explained! Nobel prize-winning scientists tell us they cannot even explain the human nervous system, how it works.

There is more to life than what we can see or know or touch...

So my prayer and prayers have been to lend all possible support and inspiration to those who can help Barbaro and love him. I may not know exactly to Whom I am praying, but I know Someone has been listening. MLE

Thank you so much for the continued updates on Barbaro. I have been following his progress since that horrible day in June. He is truly a champion and I am thankful the Jackson's love this magnificent animal. He is a source of strength for all of us as his will to live is unbelievable. What a lesson in courage for all of us to follow. God's blessings to Barbaro, the staff who have faithfully tended to his care, his devoted owners, and to those people who have simply fallen in love with him.

When we pray for Barbaro, and focus on his physical healing, I humbly ask you right now to include prayers for his peace of mind and continued courage. I also ask you to pray that Barbaro's caregivers clearly hear Divine Guidance as to where Barbaro wants to be for the next phase in his healing. Please SEE this happening, and expect the very best for Barbaro.

Thank you God, that right and perfect decisions are made by Barbaro, and for Barbaro.

Does anybody know when the boards will be shut down?

I'd like to wish everybody Happy Holidays before that happens.

Posted by: Barb AZ at December 24, 2006 12:42 AM

I'd like to wish a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all, known and unknown. In a year of so much horror and tragedy, we have much to be grateful for as we count our blessings this holiday season. Our beloved Barbaro is here. He has survived, endured and triumphed. Whatever the science involved, Barbaro would not be here without his extraordinary heart and will. That he was able to summon both up, over and over, day after day, in the face of overwhelming challenges is nothing short of a miracle.

There is another miracle, too. The older I get, the more awed I am by the ripples that are sent out by the tossing of a single stone into a pond. Alex tossed a stone into a pond when he began his Barbaro updates, and look at the ripples that flowed from that single act. Like a beacon of light, it has drawn each of us here from places all over the globe. With strength of numbers, we can influence political decisions regarding horse slaughter. Others can come here and tell us of horses in need, and so the dollars of the many can do what the dollars of one could not. I sometimes wonder whether even Alex realizes just what an enormous ripple he created by the single stone he tossed that dreadful day in May. So many things came together that day. That Alex was one of them has been our blessing.....and a miracle for all the horses.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!!

I TOTALLY agree with you, Mary Evans, on the nature of prayer and miracle...

How very ironic for Dr. Richardson to deny the one thing of which he is a supreme example, in my opinion. Could we have asked for more of a miracle than Dr. Richardson himself?

The confluence of all the prayers and love and dedication and support which have graced Barbaro are now emanating into support and change for horses everywhere. The ripple effect, the Barbaro legacy, has touched TB Friends, Mike Rea, the Grace Foundation, MHR, Kennett Florists, innumerable equine rescue sites, race tracks across the country, furry and probably feathered friends galore, and especially those among us who have grown in awareness and dedication to work for positive change wherever and however we are able.

And then there is Alex - could he have imagined he would be the lone caretaker, cool walker of the most famous horse in the land on the Christmas Day which we all imagined and hoped would be a landmark day for Barbaro? How many wishes have come true...

Alex, BARBARO'S COOL WALKER : I thank you for all you have done for us as a community which has enabled all of the above, and I can't IMAGINE a better gift.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at December 24, 2006 1:17 AM

I guess we West Coasters better put our evening plans on hold until we see the ABC World News tonight (in about 45 minutes). Can't wait to see the report on new track conditions and the Barbaro effect.

By the way, here is Jerry Klein's take on the switch in California to the new surfaces. He obviously buys into the effect these surfaces will have on the speed handicappers.

-------------------
"The last major race meeting in California to be contested over mother earth begins on Tuesday when Santa Anita opens shop for its 70th season, offering practitioners of speed handicapping a final chance before the state goes totally Poly. Yes, three-and-a-half months of breathing easy when your horse has the lead at the eighth-pole, no matter how fast it's had to run to get there, and then its all-synthetic, all of the time."
--------------------

That certainly seems to imply there was a built in bias to the dirt tracks, doesn't it?

Posted by: Shelley in CA at December 24, 2006 1:22 AM

Mary Evans-how well stated the "miracles" & "science" response. I don't think it's at all uncommon for doctors/scientists to deny existance of miracles and I guess Barbaro's healings were not, as you stated, pushbutton. However, there is absolutely no denying that more has been at work here than just good medicine. Too many things have had to occur, and have occurred to get Bobby this far. I'm a believer and it may be simplistic, but I see God's handywork everywhere, even in the beautiful red bird sitting in our tree today. We lay people probably do use the term "Miracle" a lot looser (sp) that those in the medical field, but God hasn't strayed too far from that beautiful boy in Kennet Square since May 20th. God also did a heck of a job blessing Dr. Richardson with such skills and talent, and guiding him to a realization that it was animals, not acting, that was to define his life.

Don't know if this has been posted yet! From the San Jose Mercury News via the P. Inquirer. Nice mention, Grandma Bea!

Christmas gifts arrive for Barbaro, who soon will be moved
By Mike Jensen

The Philadelphia Inquirer

PHILADELPHIA - Lately, the delivery trucks have picked up their visits to the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, bringing - what else? - Christmas presents for Barbaro.

``Big," hospital director Corinne Sweeney said of the increase in shipments for New Bolton's star patient. "Boxes and boxes. The big item is peppermints."

Barbaro isn't expected to be at the Kennett Square facility for too much longer. His surgeon, Dean Richardson, has told Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, that there's not much more he can do for the horse, whose next stop could be a horse farm in Kentucky.

His owners are in the midst of figuring out where Barbaro can be secure and comfortable and still have access to top medical care.

As for whether Barbaro could end up being a stallion in some limited capacity as soon as next year, Richardson said, "That's actually going to be outside of my decision-making."

But if breeding ends up being a reality, whatever the timetable, it makes sense to be near the mares, the surgeon said.

"If he's going to be a stallion, he has to be properly stimulated," Richardson said, pointing out that there is a learning process for young horses.

Gretchen Jackson said last week that such a decision about breeding can't be made just yet. No decision has been made on a next stop, she said, although discussions are on-going.

"We don't even know if the horse can mount a mare," she said. "The first thing is getting him out of there."

After winning the Kentucky Derby by 6 1/2 lengths, the largest margin in six decades, Barbaro fractured his right hind leg in three places in the Preakness. The next day, Richardson inserted 27 screws and a titanium plate into the limb at New Bolton. In July, laminitis set in, in his left hind foot, and Richardson had to remove 80 percent of the hoof. It's been slowly regrowing.

The weather is a big reason the discussions have stepped up about moving Barbaro. At one time, there had been discussion, she said, about taking Barbaro to his old barn at Fair Hill as a first stop. That offered some pluses, since Kathy Anderson, the horse's veterinarian when he was a racehorse, has her office attached to the barn where trainer Michael Matz has his horses. Even in bad weather, there is plenty of room for Barbaro to walk within that barn. Plus, he could be easily transported to New Bolton. However, since Matz now is in Florida training his horses for the winter, that isn't a likely scenario, Jackson said.

As for Richardson, approaching the end brings all sorts of mixed feelings, he said. Barbaro obviously has become a huge part of his life during the last seven months, not just the care of the horse. He's excited that the horse is at least to the point where they can consider that Barbaro go on to a more normal life away from the hospital.

"Don't get me wrong, we treat the horses great," Richardson said. "But it's still a hospital."

Hello Barbaro,

It sounds like you had a nice, relaxing day. Things are a little busy here at our house right now. Tomorrow, Christmas with the families start and end on Monday.

My kids are getting ready to visit relatives. I gave Emma (Sheltie) her bath tonight and Bosko (French Bulldog) has been trying out all of his new toys to see which ones he wants to take visiting.

Sandy Paws (Santa Claus to children!) came to our house early because we're going out of town. I would ask if you've been a good boy Barbaro and if Sandy Paws will come by your stall on Christmas Eve night, but I know the answer! You have been such a good boy I'm sure Sandy Paws has something very special for you!

Why don't we grab your blanket and cuddle up for the night. I hope your Team at night has Christmas carols softly playing for you to be able to hear. Some of them are so beautiful. I will tell you which one makes me think of you, tomorrow Honey.

So while you dream sweet dreams, try to imagine what Sandy Paws might bring you. Remember, it will be something special! And while you sleep, the healing will continue and tomorrow, strength will carry you through your day.

I will be here checking in throughout the day tomorrow. I love you Honey. Now close your eyes and wait for your dreams...sweet dreams are always worth waiting for! Good night. XXOOxo

Time to tuck you in sweet boy. Snuggle in your straw, grab your blankie, stretch out. Have happy hoof growing, Lael grass and peppermint eating, beautiful mares in love with you dreams. I will check on you tomorrow. I love you very much Barbaro. You are my inspiration.

BARBARO - CHAMPION OF MY HEART
I hope you are cuddled up under your warm blanket and dreaming of all your friends who love you so much...and of all the treats you love so much! Tomorrow night is Christmas Eve, and if you watch out your window you might just see Santa and his reindeer heading your way! I know you will have a very special Christmas because lots of presents are waiting for you, Mom & Pop will visit - and maybe the grandchildren - and Uncle Alex will come to take care of you and maybe you can graze with him again. Sleep well, gorgeous boy, and your hoof will grow a little bit more overnight...I hope you have some goodies lined up on your windowsill in case you get the munchies during the night. You are a glorious creature of God's creation, and you have inspired so many benevolent acts by your courage and endurance.
I LOVE YOU, BIG BOSS HORSE!!!

## Lisa and Janice - Nala is doing great. She is eating well and her attitude is good. She gets around on 3 legs very well, doesn't act like there is anything wrong with her. She goes for her next chemo treatment in 3 weeks, in the meantime she is getting lots of vitamins, supplements and love. Good thoughts from Nala to Ceasar, Lisa's 3 legged dog who survived cancer. Nala will be having a special Christmas. Thanks for everyone's support, thoughts and prayers, it has really helped.

Over Enough goes back to the vet next week to get scoped to make sure they got everything. So far he is doing perfect!

I have my wall paper set as the Derby Winning photo, and tonight,in spite of all the good news, and the miracle of your very survival,
I don't know why,but I am sad.
To look at the muscle tone, and the ease of your

So lift me up my FOB's.It is all very confusing.
God creates this beautiful,perfect,animal.
And then, lets him get hurt,in his prime.
So I guess,he was meant to do more than win horse races. And he has .....
And we would not know that you can sweep peppermints from a window sill without dropping any on the floor.
But in my dreams, you are running.Running wild in a field.
And I wish that you could, and so I want to cry.
Sorry my friends, tonight it just makes no sense.
But I love him.My horse friend.Barbaro.

I wanted to relate something that I saw early this morning. I know this is better served over at the forum but I don't have my password with me--so I can't get in.

A lot of people have been talking about where Barbaro should go during the rest of his convalenscence. I know that he shouldn't go up by Elko NV along I 80. It was -2 this morning at 6:30. Some snow but was it cold!!!!!

Me, I'd think about Southern CA. Someone like Bob and Beverly Lewis. I think they have a ranch in SoCal. And they'd have people that know about rehabbing after Charismatic.

Central Florida can get cold and it does snow on occasion. I don't know about Southern Fl.

Merry Christmas all. I probably won't be back before the New Year. Have a wonderful holiday and a safe New Year.

Good Morning to the early crew.

Have only had time to whiz through the posts from overnight. They reminded me i forgot yesterday to wish those who are sick and comfortable Christmas and a return to health in the New Year.

It's mild and misty here again today and is likely to be the same tomorrow. I have never seen a white Christmas, it's usually only damp.

A big honour and responsibility for Alex tomorrow. I'm looking forward to the report. There was a piece on TV last week about Persian War, a great hurdler from the sixties whose lad used to sleep in his box - in a sleeping bag, on the straw - as security had to be so tight around him when he was racing. I was just thinking of the huge numbers of volunteers there would be to do the same for Barbaro.

Jo, has your banner arrived yet. Did you take a photo of it before you sent it?

Good morning, Liz and the early gang!
I think there'd be no end of eager offers to sleep in Bobby's stall with him...I know I'd be on the list! :-)

I have no idea if Alex got our banner...I've asked a few times but he's never said. I wish I had taken a picture of it, but I didn't think beyond getting it sent as soon as possible, so I hope it did arrive safely.

Really grey, damp and murky here this morning...that gorgeous frost just a memory now. Doesn't look like we'll be getting a white Xmas after all!

Posted by: Jo (UK) at December 24, 2006 10:52 AM

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans!

Morning, Liz and anyone else up at this hour!

Barbaro, you Christmas star! You had another visit from your best link to the outside world, Alex! And he'll be back with you on Christmas Day. How wonderful for both of you! I hope Alex spends lots of time telling you how many people are out here sending you prayers and positive energy, but I think you're smart enough to realize that by now.

I also saw the piece on ABC last evening about the synthetic surfaces. The only negative comment came from a handicapper. I think they will all "get over it" when they realize it really will make for better racing and fewer breakdowns.

I will await ACN from AVCH ("A Very Cool Horse").

Say hello to Aunt Libby and her donor horse family for me, give your parents a great big kiss and a loud nicker to let them know how wonderful they are...and most of all, sweet boy, have yourself a Merry Little Christmas - may the Christmas star shine brightly through your window tonight. I will miss you so much when Uncle Alex goes on vacation, but you are always in my thoughts and prayers even when we can't talk for a few days. Thank you, heavenly Father, for the gift of your dear Son this season, and for your heavenly grace bestowed upon our beloved Big Boss Horse. I love you - just imagine me kissing your velvety nose.
Love and joy come to all the Fans of Barbaro, and safe home to all who will be traveling this week.

Brenda,
Try as we may, we are all still realing from the loss of Barbaro's potential...on the track that is....I think winning the KD is small potatoes compared to what he has just done.

Have ya ever had a chance to watch Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer? He says that animals "live in the moment" They have an ability to move on from the past as long as the people that surround them "let go of the past" as well. Often times he finds that an animal is depressed or does a bad behavior because the human with them is also sad or reinforcing the bad feelings. I dunno, it makes sense to me when I see him. He says that positive energy is key around animals.

Sometimes I think that is why back in July we just kept telling ourselves over and over and over to stay postive and loving toward Barbaro. Recently, I found my healing in writing those Christmas Carols. I felt I could be a little melancholy, but then I started to feel light hearted and joyful and mostly thankful that he was still here. Time for me to move on from the past and live in the moment WITH BARBARO.

Dont you worry about Barbaro, Brenda. While its true he wont race again, he's got a lot of other things to do yet...some would argue that anything he does now will far surpass what he did on the track. There is something about this horse...something we cant explain...Only the Universe knows what is store for him. We just need to pay attention and follow the leader.

Bobby will find his way...that is what animals do...that is why WE LEARN FROM THEM. Be happy for Barbaro. His latest victory of survival is a great accomplishment.

People are calling it a miracle.
I call it Barbaro.

Good Morning Sweetheart-hope you have a wonderful Sunday. Watch some pigskin, enjoy the Lael grass, sweet hay, and mints. Santa comes tonight.

Link below to a neat story about Walmac Farm and their readiness for Barbaro. I've visited the barn mentioned below and it's amazing.
