Barbaro Updates: 168

updates are now here.

Update 1272: The morning started off decent weather-wise (its warm) but the rain seems to be coming and its now quite dreary. Tim has Secretly Taken running in the fourth race at Laurel, she left the barn at 9 am this morning. .

The dirt track was closed this morning, so we only had the Tapeta track and outback. I wanted to gallop Hawty Creek this morning so she went to the Tapeta track, and galloped well. I had about four more on the synthetic surface, including one breezer, it really is riding well lately. The breeze went a little quicker than anticipated. The trainer asked if the track was riding fast ... I guess it was, but unlike when dirt is fast (hard) they seem to bounce across the top of this synthetic surface ... it just feels good. I took Tim's Medi Man to the track. She galloped in company with one of Pat Graham's horses, under David Bently. Dave is an x champion jump jockey over here, and current clerk of the scales at Delaware Park. It was an impromtu gallop around (we had not planned it) but it was good to catch up! Nonpariel went outback today, she was again very good.

Update 1271: While winter racing is certainly not as high-profile as racing the rest of the year we do have some interesting four year olds running today and tomorrow. Today Jazil, the Belmont Stakes winner in his last start, makes his 2007 debut on the inner track at Aqueduct, the 8th race. He will be a short-priced favourite in this allowance race, not a betting proposition. He will use this race as a springboard to his new campaign. Last year's Kentucky Derby favourite is making his 2007 debut tomorrow at Gulfstream: Sweetnorthernasaint, 'Contender Clash in Hal's Hope. Ramon Dominguez is heading to Florida for the mount on Sweetnorthernsaint.

On an international note the globe trotting, but now retired, Ouija Board begins another long journey to start her new career: Ouija Board Says Farewell To Gainsborough Stables.

Update 1270: Dr. Dean Richardson, with a little help from his star patient, makes a football prediction: Barbaro vet Richardson says Buckeyes win.

Update 1269: Another comfortable day for Barbaro. Tom called and he had Barbaro outside grazing today (thursday afternoon), and it was a beautiful day to do that! Mrs. Jackson is now on her way over to visit Barbaro with her grand children.

Update 1268: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). I just spoke to Mrs. Jackson who visited Barbaro this morning, bringing him his Lael grass. The Jackson's had been away for a few days over the holiday period.

Additional momentum for synthetic tracks with another good Turfway meet: Turfway Park Holiday Meet Posts Healthy Gain. The article includes the following:

"Our business has steadily increased since we installed Polytrack in September 2005," said Robert N. Elliston, Turfway Park president and CEO. "But after a couple of recent meets, we also rightly attributed some of the increase to such factors as the effects of Hurricane Katrina, renewed agreements with certain OTBs, and the fact that we did not have to cancel races last winter. There are no such factors behind the numbers for this meet, so we see even more clearly the impact of Polytrack on our business. These numbers represent the betting public's growing interest in Turfway Park racing, plain and simple."

An interesting boost for New Zealand racing: New Zealand Group 1 race gets enormous purse increase. I have never been racing in Hawke's Bay, but did spend a wonderful New Year there a couple of years ago.

Hi Folks:

Happy New Year to All.

BDude is doing good after a few bad days last week. Big Dudette is having trouble getting around. BIL Jimmy passed away 12/27/06. Thanks to everyone who lit candles.

Glad to see that everyone is back - but mostly the Jacksons so that they can go see Barbaro and bring his his favorite treat from home.

Handsome boy, I have been seeing alot of articles and news about you lately, you are quite the news icon. You look fantastic and I think you are getting around as well as can be expected while you get used to how your leg works now. Keep doing everything that you are supposed to to get that hoof growing faster and healthy. Thinking of you always. You remain in my heart and in my prayers. BIG horsie hugs, kisses, ear scratches, nose rubs and MUCH LOVE!!!

Thank you Alex for bringing continued joy to my life daily with your updates and recollections of Fair Hill. You are the best!!

I don't know if it is the fact that everyone is back and all the news is good concerning Barbaro, but all feels right in the world today!!

Barbaro, the hitch in your step is your badge of courage. I think, as you get used to the shoe, you will walk better and better. You are walking and grazing and looking fine, that is what is important!! Grow that hoof, strengthen that leg.
Butterfly kisses from Bella, Gracie and me!!

I'm so glad you got to spend so much time with the Big Boss Horse -- when he moves to his new home, there's going to have to be an arrangement made to appoint you as Barbaro's Personal Spokesman . . . Hay Guys!

Glad to see that the Big Dude is doing better.

Susan E., how is Felix the Panther Cat doing? I hope he survived the holidays in good form!

We're expecting a storm in sometime tomorrow. It is loaded with rain and some wind. Typical for January weather for the Pacific Northwest.

Great to see that everyone is gravitating back to this board! Now we have three places where we can gather to talk stuff up.

Let's keep an eye on the 110th Congress. Maybe we FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere can get something done to save the horses!

Warmest Regards from Laura S. in Drippy Washington State!

We love you and pray for you and all your family, and team. So thankful that Alex has been coming to visit you and tend you too. He helps us so much with his updates of you, and his words draw a picture for us of you and your care.

Hello To Everyone and To The Beginning Of A Great 2007.

This is a beginning of a year that had good news for Barbaro, Erin (tumor shrinking) and the continure progress of Mike.

OK Guys no where but UP from now on!!!!

Maybe we lost some dead wood in Congress and our efforts for the horses will show more results. This issue alone would encourage supporting another party if they can save the horses from slaughter. So PEOPLE IN CONGRESS listen up if you want to stay in power, the price is to save the horses in the United States of America. And pass S.1915!!!!!

Thanks, Alex for everything and hope your holidays were great.

Barbaro, thought of you every day and prayers for you every night. So glad to hear of your visitors and now we are back to a more traditional routine. Love you boy.

To anyone, the plans are to follow the previous plans concerning S.1915?? Right? Now that this retail season blitz is over my business is back to normal and I can do twice again what I have been alble to do and with less stress. Yea!!!!

Question: Do we have to start over with the House and then the Senate to get our bill passed?

I noticed the parades over new year's day. Beautiful horses paraded down the streets...yet these beautiful horses being slaughtered...?????

I am so happy to see Barbaro's family back on the board....

Answer = Yes. This from ShelleyA/Debra,Wi on the Forum

From Debra, WI & Shelley A

Ok, Everyone,
As we continue to work on the new strategy to put in end to horse slaughter, here's something we can do while we wait for some good information from DC.

Until we have more to go on, please use the following strategy and start making your calls to your Senators and your Representative and simply explain the issue and that you would appreciate their support of the ban.

Here's an email I received today.

--------------------------------------------------

Hey Debra—

Happy New Year! Hope you are doing well.

The Congressional session begins this Thursday (Jan. 4th) and we are working to get a new horse slaughter bill introduced. Unfortunately, we have to start all over – new bills, new co-sponsors – everything from square one again.

Since Congressional sessions are 2 years long, this initial stage will be critical in getting legislators to co-sponsor and support a bill. When I have more of an idea of timing, I will let you know.

Actions you can take in the meantime (while Congress is getting settled…) is to call your 2 Senators and your Representative and simply explain the issue and that you would appreciate their support of the ban. We can’t do too much until a bill is actually introduced and I have not heard if/when that will be yet. I also haven’t heard who it will be yet that will introduce the bill, but we usually try to have both a Republican and a Democrat as primary co-sponsors of the bill. Once I hear anything, I will let you know.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, thanks!

ACN, and all's well in this best of all possible new years.

So glad to be back on this Comment Board, and trust that civility and humanity will prevail.

Alex, am thrilled (Kvelling Mit Nachas) that the Forum did remain open over the holidays, because it facilitated the recsues of numerous otherwise-doomed horses - because of you and Barbaro. Though I am unable to post there, it was a comfort to be able to read what was going on this past week or so.

############
Hi, everyone. Wanted to get the New Year off to a good start by posting some material you may wish to utilize when you embark on contacting Reps and Sens to get horse slaughter ban enacted.

This is a link to one of several published anti-slaughter op pieces by FOB Sharon Crumb. Please take special note of FOB Joyce Moore's comment in rebuttal to a proslaughter commenter named Ella. I am copying Joyce's published comment below, with her permission of course, and her invite to use whatever part or all you would like to, in your upcoming activities with the legislators to get horse slaughter ban passed. AND please add your antislaughter comments to
the linked letter of sharonlyn's, to keep this piece alive on the internet.

Joyce Moore's rebuttal to antislaughter commenter Ella. (Note - the pro-slaughter talking points which Joyce has addressed, are common to most of these people.)

Here is Joyce's letter:

Although I previously responded to the original article on December 4th, after reading a post dated December 19th, I feel it is necessary to once again respond and clarify the true facts of horse slaughter. Five issues were pointed out in the December 19th response, each of which needs to be countered with the truth.

Horse processing is the most tightly regulated of any animal slaughter, and the only animal that has its transportation to slaughter regulated.

This claim is beyond absurd. Although regulations are on the books, they are NOT enforced. Horses are still transported in double-decker trailers designed for cattle. Horses are not sorted by weight, age, condition or gender. Stallions are transported with mares and foals
with the foals typically being trampled by larger horses. NO measures are taken to prevent the all too common injuries and deaths experienced by horses being transported to slaughter. Further, transportation usually occurs under the cover of darkness in an
effort to hide the injuries and extremely poor care that the horses receive during transport. Additionally, although the AAEP and AVA have offered guidelines in regard to providing adequate care during transportation (i.e. food and water) no records are maintained regarding the care the horses supposedly receive during transport and the guidelines have yet to be enforced.

2. Horse processing is the ONLY available source of FEDERALLY SUPERVISED humane euthansia for the nation's unwanted horses.

This is an outright lie. The only method of humane euthanasia is lethal injection given by a licensed veterinarian. Being struck several times with a bolt is not euthanasia, it is torture. Being slaughtered while still alive and feeling pain or having a live foal drop to the floor when a pregnant mare is cut into pieces is
certainly not humane. Considering that veterinarians are subject to strict licensing procedures, how can they not be considered `federally regulated'. Further, it is extremely rare for an inspector to be present when a horse is killed or slaughtered so it is ridiculous to claim that the process is supervised in any way.
Additionally, the `inspectors' are no longer paid by the government but by the cattle industry due to funding being cut off over a year ago in an attempt to end the slaughter of horses. Unfortunately, the spirit of that piece of legislation was completely ignored. The
cattle industry now receives between $3 and $5 for each horse that is slaughtered.

3. Who is going to pay for and care for the 90,000 unwanted horses ANNUALLY that now go to processing facilities? Particularly the dangerous or bad-tempered horses. Do you suggest they be abondoned and left to fend for themselves? Or are all of the supporters of a
ban going to open up their homes and wallets to these unwanted animals? Do you think our elected officials want to tell their constituents that the reason they had to raise taxes was to pay to
feed a bunch of horses in a retirement home? Let's get universal healthcare for America's children before we start opening nursing homes for horses on Uncle Sam's buck.

To begin with, slaughtering horses has nothing to do with universal health care. This is not a choice between two topics. Although some 90,000 horses were slaughtered in 2005, this is down
from 300,000 that were slaughtered just a few years ago. The huge decrease in numbers can be attributed to public education. Horse owners are now aware of this dirty secret and no longer believe the story given by dealers who state that the horse is `going to a good home'. Some 200,000 horses were absorbed by the industry or were truly humanely euthanized without a single penny coming from the government. Dangerous or bad-tempered horses are usually the result
of human ignorance and mistreatment. While many can be retrained and learn to trust again, some cannot. Those that can not should be euthanized by a veterinarian, not slaughtered. Regardless, the fact remains that the vast majority of horses sent to slaughter are young and reasonably healthy as there is no money to be made on old, thin horses. As a constituent, I would be ecstatic if our elected officials would
spend money on something honorable for a change.
It is ridiculous to assume that the 90,000 horses that were slaughtered in 2005 would have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves. The majority of the horses were obtained by kill buyers under false pretenses, were stolen or were considered `by-products' of the Premarin industry. Enforcement of current laws regarding
animal care along with stiffer penalties for not doing so will create a safer environment for ALL animals.

4. Some horse owners consider their animal LIVESTOCK, and the option needs to be preserved for the farmers and ranchers in this country
that depend on their horses as assets. No one says that you HAVE to send your horse to a processing facility at the end of its life, but
it does need to be there for people who need it. And that is their right to do so as a property owner as long as the horse is euthanized humanely, in accordance with the humane treatment laws that are currently in place.

Dogs and cats are considered personal property along with horses. Instead of humanely euthanizing our dogs and cats, should we begin
to slaughter them and send their meat to Korea or China? Horses are NOT raised as food animals. Very few farmers rely on horses to bring in the crops and most farms use tractors now. Those whose livelihoods depend on horses need to be held accountable. Over-breeding is not an excuse to continue to slaughter horses. Slaughtering horses is one more symptom of what is wrong in
this country. We have truly become a throw away society and do not value life, human or animal. Again, slaughter is NOT the answer.

5. Maybe they listened to the American Veterinarian Association. They don't support a ban on horse processing because they know that
in the long run it will be worse for the welfare of horses.

The AVA may claim to care about the horses but apparently they don't give a hoot about them or the people consuming them. The AVA is well
aware that many medications, such as bute, cause cancer in humans. Only recently has the USDA begun to investigate the substances used in equine medicine and the effects of those drugs on humans. This goes to heart of why the slaughter plants are foreign-owned. The guidelines for animals used in the food chain in Belgium and France are very strict. To get around the regulations, they operate in the
US.

There are two sides to the story and your readers deserve to know that their representatives are listening to both sides and making informed decisions.

This is the only statement I can agree with. Do the research and go watch the slaughter process. [end of Joyce's letter]

Hope you all can make some use of this material.

Dear Barbaro,
Hay big boy! Lookin' good! Happy 4th TB birthday.Grow that hoof......

I joyfully acknowledge my fellow FOBs. Missed you all. A Happy New Year to everyone.

Anti-horse slaughter: there is a good article in the January issue of Perfect Horse magazine, the Last Word column by Betsy Lynch. It has some thoughts on what may have hindered approval of this bill. Most notably, people want to know what other humane alternatives would be available to deal with unwanted horses. I know here at work, if you want something done and you have solutions in hand, you often get what you want. I talked to the trainer of The Garbage Man. He has several horses available. Some for a little money some for free. I think I'm going to need some foster homes, if anyone can help out it is greatly needed. Or better yet adoptors.

I'll post details on the forum.

Hi, everyone. Happy New Year from El Salvador. I just wanted to say, Alex, that you kept me in stitches with your clarifications of who you were tying up, rubbing down, grooming, etc.! I love your style of writing and appreciate your willingness to write of your experiences, not only with Barbaro, but with horses in general. God bless you and everyone else connected with Barbaro. Alex you continue to be the best at what you do. I wish I could find someone like you in my life. We could all benefit from cloning you. Your Mom and Dad should be very proud of you. Well, enough of that, don't want you to get to puffed up.

BARBARO sweet boy keep on keeping on. You are doing all the right things. I have looked at pictures of you, your Mommy (not Mrs. Jackson), and your brother and I am amazed at the beauty of all of you. How could anyone not love a HORSE!

"But just don't take my word for it.

Ohio is pretty close to the Bluegrass country where my current favorite patient was born and where Barbaro won the equivalent of a national championship. I figured I would ask his educated opinion since he has a lot of time on his hooves right now to think about these things.

I gave him a fair choice: an apple in one hand and some grilled gator bits in the other, and the decision came quickly. He figures the Buckeyes are the closest thing he has to a hometown team, plus I think his fashion sense is offended by the Florida colors."

This is too funny and cute! Is it any wonder Barbaro adores his vet?

Posted by: Susan E. at January 4, 2007 11:23 PM

Dr. Richardson is a riot! He's a pretty clever writer, very humorous.

And thank you Alex for taking Barbaro out grazing. It sounds like he had a very nice day and you did too.

GETTING STARTED ON HORSE SLAUGHTER CAMPAIGN....

This would be a good time for us to all find out who our new representatives and senators are. There have been a lot of changes since the election. Get to know your officials and find out who their aides are that would handle this issue.
As usual, we will keep you posted on anyformation that we receive from our DC connections.
Obviously, they will not be addressing this for a while but it will help to get our ducks in order and know the people that we're dealing with.

Here is an e-mail that Debra got the other day...

Wonderful to have the comments back, so great to see everyone posting!

I spent a glorious day with my horse. Like the weather up in MD/PA, the weather here in the midwest was excellent, providing a great afternoon with my love muffin, even if he rolled in the mud left over from the melting snow.

I work with many people from Florida. Already I see Gator items all over the office, Gator posters, Gator signs, yada yada yada. This week has been casual dress all week and I have seen mulitiple Gator attire around.

Not that I don't like the Gators, it's just that I am a hugh Kentucky fan. Hence, I will be cheering for Ohio State. I have to agree with Dr. Richardson's assessment of the game. I think his article was excellent, as well as entertaining to read. In fact, I'm going to print it out and post it in a very noticable place in my office tomorrow....right next to the largest Gator poster that's up!

Go Buckeyes!!!!!

Posted by: Skyler at January 4, 2007 11:31 PM

This is one time I will be cheering for Ohio State - the Big Ten is a tough conference - but Dr. Richardson got the score wrong. Ohio State is going to walk all over those Gators.

I have a quick favor to ask--a good friend just underwent a double mastectomy today and I'm headed to the hospital to check in our her. She'll start chemotherapy as soon as she's able. I've started a candle group under "JenP" at gratefulness.org (which I wouldn't have known about without this great group!) The FOBs have been so great at lighting candles, I thought I'd ask for your help on this one. Jennifer's fiance just got back to the US after two tours in Iraq, and they were planning a spring wedding when she was diagnosed with very aggressive breast cancer. Instead, they had a small wedding on 12/23 before her surgery. He's only able to be with her for 10 days. Thanks for your prayers--she's a great gal!!

Hi everyone it is so great to be back for a New Year! I hope everyone had a happy holiday with Christmas and New Years. Thank you Alex for starting this site again for all of us who love horses and love Barbaro. Thank you for all of the updates on Sweet Barbaro during the break.
Time to start calling and faxing about the horse slaughter issue, I feel that this time we will be heard even louder now. I had the opportunity to meet 3 different people over the course of the holidays, each were horse owners which was unknown to me until we started talking and they showed me pictures, one person had show horses that were beautiful and has a ranch and is against HS, the others owns horses and are against HS too, so coincidences just don't happen on purpose, there will be more voices to add for our horses now.
Barbaro, this year will be wonderful because you are walking now and getting better, thanks to everyone who kept the candles burning for Barbaro and continue to do so, miracles do happen.

Hello Barbaro,

The weather has been unseasonably warm for both you and I. For me, I'm starting to miss the snow and cooler air. I love having four seasons! But Winter is one of my favorites.

I've been told that I am a "Windowsill Winter Lover". I don't ski, snowmobile or skate. I like to be inside with hot chocolate while the wind is whipping and snow is falling. I love the beauty of Winter.

But, there is the dark part of Winter. And because of that, I am thankful that this Winter has been mild for YOU.

I am so relieved that you are still able to get outside and do a bit of grazing without slippery ice around you. I am also pleased that your Mommy can still bring you Lael grass that you enjoy so much. Because of you Honey, I am happy that the Winter has been mild.

So, are you ready to grab your blanket? You got to go grazing and had fresh picked grass brought to you by your Mommy. You were a busy boy today! And, your eyes look alittle sleepy Honey.

While you sleep, let the healing continue and tomorrow, strength will carry you through your day. You will have sweet dreams tonight Honey filled with memories of today, loved ones faces and tender times with your Team.

Now close your eyes Barbaro. Sweet dreams are two winks away... Remember, I love you. Good night Honey. XXOOx
___________

Hello Hope,

How are you feeling Little One? Are you getting a bit more comfortable with all of the attention? Love? Affection? I hope you're able to see the blessing in everything your angels offer you.

Please close your eyes Sweetheart. It's time to put this day to bed. Your dream angels will help lead you to wonderful times with friendly faces...just wait and see!

I will look for an update tomorrow Honey. Good night Hope. I love you. xxoo

A very Happy New Year to you!!

Great article on Bloodhorse.com about Sen. Tom Buford, in KY, introducing a bill that would leave a trail to embarass owners who sell their horses for slaughter. I think he's on to something - he's trying a new approach to end the practice of slaughtering these wonderful, noble beings! I'm hoping this new year turns the tide in our favour - it's been a loooonnnng time coming!

Alex, once again, cheers for everything! I've missed the postings, but hope you had a nice break!

Healing thoughts to Barbaro - keep it up!!! In the home stretch now!

Love to all,

Julie Z. (in Houston)

How wonderful to come home from work and find the board back up. I've missed the ability to "touch base" with everyone, even though the updates have been wonderful. Thanks, Alex.

One more example of Eclipse Awards going to folks involved in the Barbaro story.

Writer wins with Barbaro Series

Surely there will be an award in there for the "subject" of all these kudos.

Bobby, so glad everything's back to normal (except maybe your hairdo). Give my love to Mrs. J and the kids the next time you see them.

Goodnight dearest Barbaro, you had quite a day. Things seem back to normal and it is time to rest and heal now. Grow that hoof and strengthen that leg. You are our champion heart always. Butterfly kisses from Bella, Gracie and me. G'nite, sweet boy.

Valentine's for MO Horse Heroes Project has a thread on the discussion board. Here is the letter I got from HSMO stating they gave us our own url to donate or sponsor the accident horses for Valentine's Day.

Hi Rosemary,

Your site is set up and it should be working! Check out www.hsmo.org/fansofbarbaro and let me know if this will meet your needs.

Your members can donate to any of the horses, or to all of the horses, through this donation form. (They can click to the other page to read the descriptions of the horses.) Then we can easily run a report on the gifts generated through your project.

The only thing you need to tell people to do is to use this form, and NOT the individual forms set up for each horse. If they use the “Willie” form to donate to Willie, we will have no way of knowing that they are part of the Fans of Barbaro group.

Thanks again for all of your support!

Jen

This mission of love will run until February 7th

Good late night to my favorite Braveheart, Keeper of Our Dreams, Barbaro... and good early morning to those European friends, Jo and Liz, Marg in ME, and Alex of the Sunrise. What a rich reward to read each and every beautiful post to and in honor of our gorgeous, mindful, intelligent and courageous patient.

I am even more convinced this year of miracles includes the very rare, extremely mild winter in the NE which has allowed green grass to continue within reach of Barbaro, sunshine to heal his body, fresh air to quicken his senses. Unfortunately, I hear that the ski resorts are resorting to pagan rituals to return snow and freezing temperatures to the region to save their winter business, so there may be a change in the weather. Light and dark, as martita says - there is a balance in nature.

Blessings to all in need, tonight and tomorrow...

Re Harry Aleo's horses, if you have not been following in the forum:

VICARINO won handily last weekend, VICTORINA runs Saturday in Race 7, and SMOKEY STOVER runs Sunday in Race 3, all at GGF. GGF is doing their best to get good races going for Harry, and his horses are quite the celebrities at the track!

All the races are available on Calracing.com, should anyone like to watch live video or race replays.

I was happy to see that one of the Honorable Mentions in the Eclipse Awards turf writing category was the author of the beautiful piece on Lost in the Fog, one of many we read last year about this magnificent horse lost too soon.
(The winner and other Honorable Mention were about Big B, of course!).

Good (very early!) morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans! --Morning, Shelley in CA.

I have missed the public greetings to you, Big Bay One, but I know you were well cared for by everyone while we were on break. We just need to get Alex back to finish up on the mane. Hey, maybe he can trim those whiskers at the same time?

And, as a former resident of Ohio, I guess I have to go with the prediction out of NBC - Go Bucks!

Alex and Tim, as always, thank you for being such gracious hosts. I will be cheering on Secretly Taken in the 4th at Laurel this afternoon! Safe trip!

Good morning Shelley and Marg.

It's good to be able to greet you here again. I expect Jo and the other early crew are around somewhere. Some bits of news from over the pond - poor old Lester Piggott spent Christmas in hospital with a heart scare, but seems OK now; one of the UK's biggest racing clubs The Elite Racing Club has sent a filly, Ocean's Apart, to Graham Motion to train and race in the US, so I hope Alex will keep us informed of her progress; and Ouija Board has left Ed Dunlop's stables to begin the preparation for her new career as a brood mare. She hasn't left for the States yet, but should be doing so shortly.

Posted by: Liz (UK) at January 5, 2007 9:41 AM

Speaking of Lester Piggott, I am surprised more of these guys don't end up with heart scares... the anxiety and stress, and the beatings up they endure, would do anybody in. It will be fun to follow Ocean's Apart, would be interesting to know why they sent her over rather than keeping her for racing there - !?? And then we get to have Ouija Board right here, that will be really special. So glad she has fully recovered from that little scare. Let us know when you hear of her imminent departure...

It's nice to be here again. Hope you are not suffering more intense winter than usual... lots of speculation over here about why the 40-50 year incidence of this lack of winter in the Northeast US, with the opposite incredibly heavy winter in the Rockies and Midwest... Scientist here in the Bay area speculated that our bad weather pattern may not only be a result of global warming, but that this bad weather will only be a precursor to worse than we can speculate because it will create its own more intense results. Just glad I won't be around in 50 years... At least this is the year Barbaro benefits, with walking outside privileges...

GOOD MORNING TO SWEET, COURAGEOUS BARBARO & TO OUR SAINTED ALEX & TO ALL FAMILY HERE!

An advance welcome to the elegant Ouija Board - the USA will be honored to have you here, and I wish you a healthy and happy life in your new career as a mommy!

I'm a pro football fan, don't really watch college ball...BUT, if Dr. Richardson wants Ohio State that's good enough for me - GO BUCKEYES!

Barbaro - if Uncle Alex doesn't pick your mane to your pleasure, I'm sure our Dora J in Alabama would be happy to come up and snip you into style!

Happy Friday, all!

### Shelley in CA

You are probably asleep by now, but nice to hear from you again. I was just remarking today how we seem to have gone from November to February type weather without any significant winter cold here. It could of course come late like it did last year, which plays havoc with wildlife who already think it's spring. I don't know about horses, if it affects their coats. I have seen quite a number, albeit rugged-up, grazing in the fields, as the grass hasn't stopped growing. But, yes, it must be good for Barbaro to get out into the fresh air.

As far as Elite Racing is concerned, I think they see sending a horse to America as an interesting experiment...and it gives the members an excuse for a holiday I suppose:

Hiya, Bobbey! Wow, you've reached the end of another "work week of healing". You know what that means: Tomorrow is bath day! Has Alex finished trimming your mane yet? There are lots of FsOB who would be happy to stand in for him to finish your "'do", sweet prince. Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita (who is still asleep on the sofa).

#### To Maribel, I hope your cat, Jimmi, grows his coat back quickly.
To Kim in Nicholasville: Please don't forget that Louisville won the Orange Bowl this week. It was so awesome to see Muhammmed Ali serving as honourary team captain prior to the coin toss. Ali demonstrates that he has the courage of Barbaro as he grapples with Parkinson's Disease.
A good morning to all FsOB! ####

Good Morning all FOB's!

Dear Barbaro (you gorgeous horse),

I am thrilled that you are a finalist in the Eclipse Awards for best three year, but you are so much more than that to the horseracing industry. I just have a sense that there will be some kind of special recognition of you and your accomplishments during 2006. And if there isn't, then shame on the people who put together the awards show. They would have missed a perfect opportunity to shine the light on one of the brightest stars to enter the industry in years. What other horse in recent memory has attracted the attention of the world and of people who don't even follow horse racing?

I'll get off my soapbox now! Have a fun day full of treats, grazing, spoiling, loving and healing.

Thanks, Alex

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at January 5, 2007 1:09 PM

Since Alex posted an article on Ouija Board and there has been discussion about her today, I posted on the forum over the holidays that Lone Star Park has renamed one of their stakes races to the Ouija Board Hanicap. They hosted the 2004 Breeders Cup where she won the fillies and mares turf race in excellent fashion, so they wanted to honor her with a race named after her. It's a $200,000 grade 3 turf race for fillies and mares that used to be called the WinStar Distaff.

I think it's great that horses are honored while they are still alive, just like Pimlico did with Barbaro.

Well, I know nothing about football but I've read Dr. R's article and all these posts, so this complete ignoramus is going to weigh in. Since I'm always for the underdog (I think Florida is the underdog here) and I lived in Florida for a while (my favorite state, it's WARM) I'm going with the Gators, whoever they are!

Sorry, Barbaro. Just grow that hoof, baby.

G'morning, y'all-
I've been thinking about this for a long time-I'd like to find a charitable organization to donate a piece of artwork to for the purpose of selling prints to help raise funds to aid in getting horses in danger of slaughter adopted.

I don't have the wherewithal to actually do a bunch of printing, but I'd be happy to donate the artwork if y'all can help me figure out who to contact, then I can choose an organization.
