Barbaro Updates: 170

updates are now here.

Update 1280: Another comfortable day for Barbaro. Tom called and he visited Barbaro this afternoon and had him outside. Of course he was blessed with summer weather! I went back to Fair Hill and took Hawty Creek out to graze while reading my book "The Power of One", it was just too nice a day.

Sweetnorthernsaint was third on his 2007 debut: Chatain Charges to Gulfstream Track Mark. The one mile track record was previously held by Showing Up!

Update 1279: The Daily Racing Form has an article on the new cast on Barbaro's left hind foot: Barabaro gets cast to stabilize hoof. Not only do we learn that this was somewhat of a routine procedure for the circumstances, but also how the cast was applied:

Jackson said that the procedure to put the cast on Barbaro's left hind leg did not require anesthesia and was performed in the colt's stall.

Update 1278: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (friday night). Mrs. Jackson just called (10:10 am) as I was grazing and currying Hawty Creek. Mrs. Jackson had just visited Barbaro and while he was lying down as she arrived, he was soon on his feet.

Today it is hot almost summer weather! Hawty Creek just jogged a little in the shedrow. A nice easy day for her. I galloped Nonpariel with Tim on Farouche. They both went very nicely. I was to breeze a three year old a half on his own. When I got to the track (Tapeta track) there was a set of Graham Motion's about to train. They had a couple also breezing a half. I asked if I could just sit behind them so my horse had something to look at during the work. No problem. We went a nice half and galloped out strongly. It is nice being able to sit behind horses and not worry about excessive kickback coming at you. I asked Fen (on one of Graham's) how fast she thought we went: "no clue" and a grin was her response. I thought we went in about 50 ... it was close enough to that anyway. Fen has been shedrowing Better Talk Now the last few days ... he is in good form.

Can someone explain why the new Bill HR 249 just introduced by Whitfield only protects "wild" horses and burros. I'm confused. I thought he wanted to protect all horses.

I am concerned when Barbaro goes to Kentucky, the people he loves will live so far away. Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson etc. even though they feel he will be well taken care of, animals cannot talk for themselves and you never really know what is going on. It is too bad Barbaro cannot be kept close by when he leave the New Bolton Center. Forever a fan of Barbaro

I'm gonna call Reps. Ed Whitfield (R Ky) and Nick Rahall (D WVa) to commend them for getting anti-slaughter before the House so rapidly (HR 249) - even though this ban would apply only to the wild equines. It is a start, and will get the issue out there. I would imagine this sets the stage for someone proposing the equivalent of last session's HR 503 and S 1915 (applicable to all equines; not limited to the wild ones).

Shelley A, other legislative savvy people with contacts - anything we can be told about what's going on, why the wild equine ban first, is this part of the big picture anti-slaughter strategy, or am I just asking a lot of stupid questions? Inquiring horseloving minds want to know!

I assume we should get behind this HR 249 while at the same time advocating the broader slaughter ban we were trying to get passed last session. Right? Please somebody educate me.

Thanks as always for today's update. Barbaro continues to amaze me. I am so moved by how he really knows Mrs. Jackson. I'm sure that means the world to her as well.

It's been a stange winter (except for the people dealing with all the snow in Denver...), but at least our boy has a chance to go outside more than he might have.

Sounds like the purpose of the bill is to shut the slaughterhouses. For the moment - in the absence of other guidance - we should probably consider it a language thing that we as (for lack of a better word) outsiders shouldn't refine too much upon. More interesting to this outsider is that it was brought up on day two of the new congress. Methinks this is not a coincidence as Mr. Whitfield is fully committed to ending horse slaughter, and (per ShelleyA) was very involved in the late-night-end-of-session S1915 wrangling.

CJ, does this help your enquiring mind?

Good afternoon, all!

Alex, thanks for the wonderful updates. I have to chuckle at that scene of Barbaro whinnying impatiently for his mom to bring him some Lael grass. Is our boy spoiled or what?? He deserves every blade of it--may it help his hoof to grow faster.

#### Cora, I'm so sorry about Gabriella. There is nothing that can ease the sadness of your loss except knowing that she is at peace and happily playing with other beloved furkids.

When we pray for Barbaro, and focus on his physical healing, I humbly ask you right now to include prayers for his peace of mind and continued courage. I also ask you to pray that Barbaro's caregivers are able to clearly hear Divine Guidance as to where Barbaro wants to be for the next phase in his healing.

Thank you God, that right and perfect decisions are made by Barbaro, and for Barbaro.

Dear Alex,

ACN is always what we want to hear. We might be spoiled a bit, and getting used to it, but it is still not to be taken for granted.

Barbaro, and all of his connections remain ever in my thoughts and prayers. And that includes you, and all of the FOBs.

I am sure that you keep us often in mind too, even as you rub and curry that magnificent boy.
So, as you do, please know that you are doing it for all of us. Add all our love to every stroke, and scrtich.

And, even if you are not able to actually do so, please send a little "hug" to Mrs Jackson for us...even if you have to do it, just mentally, while she is in the room.

We always rely on you for so much. I'm hoping that fulfilling this little request is a happy burdon.

ACN! Now the day officially begins (it's almost 2:00 pm here!).

I'll never take that for granted, Bobby.

Re: the wild equines bill coming up first---they're getting rounded up, hounded to death, and slaughtered in huge numbers and in some areas are on the brink of extinction (Thank you, ex-Sen. Burns and cronies). Maybe that's one reason why Rep. Whitfield is acting for them right now.

Posted by: Susan E. at January 6, 2007 7:50 PM

Alex, Glad to see we're able to "Comment" again, and tell you yet again (do you ever get tired of hearing it?) how much it means that you keep us informed about Bobby!! ACN means happy FOBs! To all worried about him moving away from his people, think on the + side. They're doing the best thing for him, he may fall in love with a new mare (or cow?). Like the song says, "When I'm not near the girl I love, I love the girl I'm near." I'm sure he'll be happy wherever, he's got such a great attitude. Love you, Big B!

DRF article on Barbaro's cast:
http://www.drf.com/news/article/81707.html

Mr. J said it was done in his stall not in surgery

Posted by: Mary at January 6, 2007 8:15 PM

Here's the article:

Barabaro gets cast to stabilize hoof
By GLENYE CAIN OAKFORD
LEXINGTON, Ky. – A cast has been put on Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro’s left hind leg to help stabilize his hoof, which is regrowing after developing a severe case of laminitis in July.

Roy Jackson, who bred and owns Barbaro with his wife Gretchen, said Saturday that equine podiatrist Dr. Scott Morrison had visited Barbaro for the second time on Jan. 3 and applied the cast. Morrison, a veterinarian at the Rood and Riddle equine hospital in Lexington, first visited Barbaro at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in late December to examine the laminitic hoof and make recommendations on how to manage it.

"It's just a routine thing to stabilize that foot a little more," Jackson said. "He's doing fine with it. I think any case with laminitis like this, it's a bit of a fragile situation. The hoof grows so slowly, and I think this is a common thing they do with those cases, to put a cast on it for a while. It makes it stand more level and makes it more stable."

Barbaro has been in the New Bolton Center's intensive care unit since breaking his right hind leg on May 20 during the Preakness Stakes. He underwent surgery to stabilize that injury on May 21 but developed laminitis, a common complication, in his left hind leg in mid-July. Barbaro's surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, removed about 80 percent of the hoof, which is now regrowing.

The hoof regrowth will take months, Richardson has said.

"The best comparison I know is that it's like losing your fingernail," Jackson said. "It's a slow process to grow it back."

Jackson said that the procedure to put the cast on Barbaro's left hind leg did not require anesthesia and was performed in the colt's stall.

Jackson declined to comment on whether any decision had been made regarding Barbaro's eventual discharge from the New Bolton Center or a possible destination for the colt after he leaves the hospital. In December, Richardson told reporters that he could envision the horse leaving "in the not-so-distant future," fueling speculation that Barbaro's departure could be imminent.

Mary -
Thank you for posting that article regarding the new cast. I had not seen it and appreciate reading it. I'm no doctor to be sure, but I feel anything that can help stabalize Barbaro right now in order to help him move without fear of further injury while his hoof regrows is a good thing. And he needs to move for his legs to get stronger and to ease any boredom.

From all I've read, it is such a fragile situation still and a lot of care with no corner's cut is so important. And, of course, prayers... Mine will continue.

all posted on that. Yes, it is unusual for me to post two days in row but that is because thoughts of you began to invade my breathing
practice at 3AM this morning. Normally I would
tune out on such invasion but as it was you, I stopped the concentration I was working on and
allowed my mind to dwell on you along with articals regarding you put up on Tim's site. Somewhere in all this mental activity The Fog & his medical and other treatment surfaced. So,
to breifly share with you some of the concepts
that crossed my mind in the wee hours of this day
Both of you were runners prior to physical
difficulties setting in. You both trained appropriately and performed your duties as re-
quested by your people. When The Fog was confined to his familiar stall he was taken out
side to the race track where he could still participate via watching though not walking or runnig on the track. During the couple of weeks that the growth on Foggy ceased to grow and there was no chemo treatment, he very much enjoyed the trips to the track. They seemed to enliven him. You Barbaro are really no different
Such experiences would enliven you as well. Kind of like having Mrs.J. with Leal grass stop
by. The advantage that you have over The Fog is that you can actually walk to a track (depending on how far it is from your stall) and maybe even a segment of the track. Well, presently 5 minutes worth, under strick supervission of course..................The weather in Kentucky is really not that much different from that of
southern Penn. where you presently are.....................Mrs Jackson commented
that she did not think your place was at Lael
Stables because you belonged to the American people and the farm could not accomodate the public. WHY SHOULD LAEL FARM ACCOMODATE THE PUBLIC??????????????? Barbaro, you know you may be an American icon but, you do not belong to the American public. And there is absolutely no
need for the Jacksons to do anything to their
farm to accomodate the public were you to go
to Lael Stables at some point in the future. Which is a point that should not altogether be dismissed as "EVERYTHING HAS TWO HANDLES, THE ONE BY WHICH IT MAY BE DONE, THE OTHER BY WHICH IT MAY NOT...Epictrus". Both you and The Fog had brief preshedualed public appearances, away from your living quarters, before the
physical difficulities, why should that be any different after the difficulaties are in the past? Were there to be any public appearances,
they would be on the Jacksons terms in the best
interest of you, the horse. According to Mrs. Jackson you would probably enjoy a little variety in your life-----who better to select
that variety than you and the Jacksons...when
you are well enough.

Wherever it is that you will wind up in the next step of your treatment, I am really pleased you will not be going to another hospital or a hands on horse farm.

Meantime, keep tuned in to the + healing vibrations and have a pleasant night. Just so you know, no more 3AM diversions. Once does it.

The two abuse/neglect horses I spoke of yesterday, arrived at MHR at 7:15pm last night.

The 9 y/o Paint Mare, needs approximately 150-200lbs. She had sustained an injury in October, on her left hind leg (severe cut from corragated steel roofing) No treatment had been given, so is swollen and proud fleshed that continues to rupture. She will be undergoing a surgical procedure on Thursday, the 11th of January at 11:30am to repair her leg. She is on aggressive antibiotic treatment, has been wormed, and has had shots. She was mildly sedated this morning in order for the exam and cleaning and she was not happy with this. She is also on bute for the pain. Her feet will be done on Thursday as well we she is under as she cannot put full weight on it.

The Gelding 20-22 y/o? is in need of 200-250 lbs. He is extremely shaggy, and coat is very dull and brittle. His feet were between 10 and 11 inches long upon his arrival. He is very friendly, but you can see a wariness in his eyes.
He has been wormed, and shots given.

These two horses in their condition were still being ridden which is horrid.

Thank you for allowing me to share.

How can people treat horses this way. This is so sad. Thank you so much for taking these horses in and caring for their needs. I imagine surgery will be expensive. I'll meet them next week when I come to volunteer.

Hi Folks:

The Bdude had a minor stroke last night but he's recovering now - about 24 hrs later. He's walking pretty good, meowing, purring and eating. One eye is completely dilated while the other is normal. When I posted last night he could not walk and did not know where he was. We thought he was going to kitty heaven but he's on the mend - THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THE PRAYERS AND CANDLES - YOU BROUGHT HIM BACK TO US.

That is just too cute about Barbaro recognizing his Mom's voice! What a character he is??

I just wonder why he still tries to bite Alex every visit?? And if maybe with time subside.

I love horses but don't have alot of knowlege or experience with them. Only jumping & riding lessons when I was a child and no grooming or feeding.

Did e-mail today Carl Levin who's Michigans US Senator and I allways get a reply from him.
Asked about the Iraq war (my son just returned from Iraq and could go right back) He had many near death experiences with some heartwrenching stories of his soldiers he lost. He visited the injured in DC hospital and visited graves in Arlington Cemetary. He traveled from Michigan on leave from Germany with his own money to pay respects. He bought with his own money a playstation for one soldier who is in rehab for 1 year. He is a blessing and those soldiers couldn't have a more caring officer & only 23 yrs old. Sorry to brag but Iäm so proud of what he did for them!!!

Also, have asked Carl Levin on this horse slaughter bill and I expect responses on these both very urgent issues. These are of utmost importance 1)Surge of troops in Iraq 2)Horse slaughter bill. I will be pounding the pavement!!!

Levin & Stabenow are on our side but we have to get the bill done & signed. The republican lame duck congress lost 27 seats and they only worked about 6 months last year!! That is why all those seats where lost & bills left without signing!! We have to make sure that the new elected seats are working?? If not voting will come again.

##Cora, so sorry for the loss of your precious kitty, she was very lucky to have a great mom like you.

## They announced on HRTV today about Rep. Whitfield introducing wild horse bill - I am confident there is a reason for what he is doing as I wondered too why just wild horses - great sign that it was brought up the second day of session. It is unacceptable that close to 100,000 horses were slaughtered last year!

## Bad accident at Santa Anita (no polytrack) today, if anyone knows the outcome for WinrWinrChickndner as she fell and other horses fell over her. Don't know as I couldn't watch anymore.

Edgar Prado won 2 stakes races at Gulfstream aboard Kellys Landing in the Mr. Prospector and Classic Campaign in the Fort Lauderdale. Thank goodness looked like all came home safe at Gulfstream today.

Cora,

I am so sorry for your loss of Gabriella.

My husband and I lost our first kid (cat) in 1998 and I still miss her.

But, after only sad tears for Kola, slowly, smiles started to make their way across my face once again. Memories were on my side.

I swear there are times that I see her just turning the corner out of the room or I can smell her on a blanket (I HAVE done laundry since then!).

Gabriella will always be with you, and, within you.

Take care Cora and John.

Hello Barbaro,

Well, it sure looks like the "Boys of the East Coast" know how to take advantage of an unseasonably warm January day!

Two guys out for a graze and the other reading a book with a good friend. Maybe I should quit my pouting about not having snow and take a few pointers from you guys. I'll start tomorrow!!

But until then Barbaro, you and I need to tuck you into bed. The weather may be warm enough where you are but again, to unite you with your Colorado Fans, please grab your lighter-weight blanket Honey. We won't pull it up so high tonight.

I was happy to read that you were able to go out and graze today. It always feels good to breathe in some fresh air!

Dream only sweet dreams Honey, filled with spearmints, Lael grass and lots of love from Mommy and tender times with your Team. While you sleep Honey, let the healing continue and tomorrow, strength will carry you through your day.

Now sleep Barbaro. If the fresh air of today hasn't made you sleepy yet, will you please say a prayer for Hope? You met her the other night, remember? Yes, if you want to make a wish, you can do that too Honey! But if you have time before falling asleep, please say a prayer...anything from your heart will be heard Barbaro.

Good night Honey. I am so proud of you and love you very much. Good night. XXOOx

#####

Hello Hope,

How are you doing Honey? I read the update on you and the others. It seems you have been carrying quite a burden with you for some time Hope. No, not your foal. Your foal is a gift, God bless it's heart...

Your caregivers have discovered that you are blind. Hope, it's okay. It's better that they know. Now, they can understand even more what you are going through. It really is better...for you.

Honey, things may seem like they're stacking up against you right now. But it is necessary to deal with everything now in order to clear the path to your recovery.

You don't need to worry about anything. We will do any worrying that is needed. All you need to concern yourself with, is getting better.

Barbaro is saying prayers for you tonight. And, I suspect he is making some wishes for you as well. He was inching his way to the window as I was leaving him, that Little Stinker!

So, you've got everything you need Hope. Friends, prayers, love, care, respect, food, medicine, fresh bedding and...wishes!

You are loved Hope. Believe it! Now close your eyes to sleep. Sweet dreams Honey. Good night. I love you. xxoo

Thanks, as always, Laurie.

Alex.....interesting book.

Perhaps we should start a book club. Seriously. I'm sure many of us have the same tastes in literature and, if not, it would broaden the horizons of many.

Though I must say, I'd have to pass on the month we did "War and Peace", 'tis much too long. Also, no chick novels. I just can't see you out grazing a horse, reading anything by Danielle Steele, though her books are good, it's just not a visual I'm getting here.

I say next month, choose Michener, Grisham, Evans, Baldacci, then the month after, something educational or suspenseful, etc.

Good Morning all.

Dull, wet and dreary here. Generally at this time of year race meetings are abandoned because of frost, but the problem is waterlogging at the moment. You can throw the formbook out of the window as well.

Good to know that Barbaro can get outside. The mention of him recognising Mrs Jackson's voice takes me back to the days of Red Rum. After he won his third Grand National, he was on The Sports Review of the Year show. They brought him in to the TV studio where he behaved beautifully as they interviewed his trainer Ginger McCain.
They then went to a link with his jockey Tommy Stack on a big screen. As soon as Tommy started to speak, Rummy's Head went up, he cocked his ears and turned them as he listened to the voice which he obviously recognised. It was a great TV moment.

Sorry to hear about Cora's Gabriella. My cat is currently being kept in at the vet's with an ongoing (not life-threatening) problem. I'm going to have to get some advice about cat care from the forums later.

Posted by: Liz (UK) at January 7, 2007 10:13 AM

Liz,

What a great TV moment that must have been with Rummy! Just having him live in the studio was a wonderful thought...

When I read how Mrs. Jackson described B's reaction when he heard her voice, the thought crossed my mind that maybe they will take that into consideration when they decide where to place him in the foreseeable future. The fact that this was significant enough for her to mention in an interview indicates it made an impression on her! I don't think they have been away from Barbaro that long for some time, and their connection is obviously becoming very strong.

This is going to be an interesting story, for sure...

I just hope they're remembering to keep the hoof fairy happy.

Any more news on Fondmort?

Good morning everyone, and good morning Barbaro.

This week promises to bring....I hate to even write this....an artic front to our area so I'm taking the opportunity today to do some outdoor activities. The outdoor holiday lights are just screaming to be taken down. I can't complain though, with our FOB family in Colorado, western Kansas and western Nebraska. You all need a break.

Nancy in CT: Thanks for the suggestion on Riding Lessons! Right now I'm on "The Footprints of God" by Greg Iles. It is quite an odd book, but nonetheless the plot line has caught my attention and I'm almost done. Need to see how it ends.

Welcome home Jock4hire! Thanks for letting us know how the retirement party went. Old ballet dancing photos? That'll get 'em every time! I found some not too long ago of my brother and will use your suggestion and find a memorable moment to "spring" these on him.

Everyone, make it a comfortable day.

Dear Fans of Barbaro,

Well, the AZ FOB's have done it again! Barb, Sherry, Daryl and Rosemary met for the second time to improve the lives of all horses. We met at a fifties diner and discussed strategies for our anti slaughter campaign.

Daryl is working on a myth-buster booklet we can use when talking to officials, or even our neighbors down the street. It is a point-counter point presentation. If somebody says, “What about the 90,000 horses,” Daryl has an answer! If they counter with, “Well the AVMA says it’s humane,” Daryl has an answer! He is working hard on it and we appreciate his efforts.

Rosemary brought along the letter Sharon wrote for the Tucson Citizen. It is a wonderful letter, well written and very poignant.

But, wait a minute; Daryl is on the phone with Senator Ensign’s aide Mike, using Sherry’s minutes! Here’s what Mike said:

“Our voices have been heard! All the calls we made DID MAKE A DIFFERENCE! He says we need to START CALLING NOW. Don’t wait for a new bill to be introduced. Call your state representatives in the House and the U.S. Senate N O W. Don’t stop and don’t wait!

We continued our meeting with other plans in the making. Earlier in the day we met with a board member from the Arizona State Horseman’s Association (ASHA), a voice they listen to here in Arizona. So now, we will be attending a meeting with ASHA to get them to back us on the issue.

Daryl will be putting together golf tournaments to help out the Last Chance Horse Rescue. Rosemary and Barb also discussed helping out some local rescues.

Sherry is in the process of setting up a meeting with our now famous Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio. He is an animal lover and goes after animal abusers. He is AWESOME!

We will all be contacting law enforcement agencies that use horses in their mounted patrols, to find out what they do with their retired mounts.

It was a very productive meeting and we’d like all of you in other states to GET TOGETHER so we can stop the insanity of horse slaughter.

NOW, get out there and CALL YOUR STATE REPS! ! !

Barb, Sherry, Daryl and Rosemary

Barbaro among Eclipse finalists
Bernardini also in the running

By Jennie Rees
jrees@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro and Bernardini met only once on the track: the Preakness Stakes, in which Barbaro sustained life-threatening leg fractures while Bernardini romped by 5¼ lengths. But the star 3-year-old colts, both of whom are finished racing, are in one more competition.

As expected, they are among the three finalists for the 2006 Eclipse Award as 3-year-old male champion -- finalists for the divisional equine and human awards were announced yesterday.

Barbaro, then unbeaten, captivated the country with his dominant Derby performance before breaking down 100 yards into the Preakness. Bernardini went on to dazzle racing fans with romps in the Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup before finishing second to Invasor in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Early on Bernardini seemed to be the likely Eclipse winner off his three Grade I victories, a triumph over older horses and a good finish in the Breeders' Cup.

Barbaro remains squarely in the hunt, in part because his odds-defying recovery from injuries was the one racing story to resonate with mainstream America. Another factor could be some voter backlash to Sheik Mohammed opting to retire a seemingly healthy Bernardini to stud at his Darley Stud in Lexington, Ky.

Unbeaten Cigar Mile winner Discreet is the third 3-year-old finalist but is considered a long shot.

The Eclipse Awards are determined in voting by National Turf Writers Association members, Daily Racing Form employees and designated representatives of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and Equibase Co.

Voters must rank three horses or humans in each category. While the top three vote-getters are recognized as finalists, winners are determined by the number of first-place votes.

The 3-year-old colt division is the only one whose finalists do not include a Breeders' Cup winner. Seven of the eight Breeders' Cup winners Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs made the top three in their division, headed by Invasor among older males and Juvenile winner Street Sense among 2-year-old colts and geldings. Street Sense is trained by Louisville-based Carl Nafzger.

The other BC winners who are finalists: Unbeaten Dreaming of Anna (Juvenile Fillies) for 2-year-old filly champion, Round Pond (Distaff) as older female, Thor's Echo (Sprint) as sprinter, Miesque's Approval (Mile) as male turf horse and Ouija Board (Filly & Mare Turf) as female turf horse. The only Breeders' Cup winner who is not a finalist is English-based Red Rocks, who won the Turf in his only U.S. start.

The equine and humane divisional winners and Horse of the Year will be announced at the Eclipse Awards ceremony Jan. 22 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
