Barbaro Updates: 171

updates are now here.

Update 1288: Keeneland's 8 day Janaury sale began on monday: Point Ashley joins Hill 'n' Dale for $1.8M. While the average prices were up on the first day, the number sold was down, and the buyback rate was up.

California seems to me a pretty progressive state with respect to its horse racing industry. It has mandated synthetic tracks and it also maintains data on horse breakdowns. 2006 did see a dip in a number that had been rising significantly: Thoroughbred fatalities down in 2006.

The weather seems a lttle chilly this morning, but more cooperative for training!

Update 1287: Tom called and confirmed Barbaro was comfortable when he visited and groomed him early afternoon. He was unable to to take him outside, likely due to the persistant rain we had this morning.

Later this afternoon the weather did brighten up. I went back to Fair Hill to take Hawty Creek out to graze. I had decided this morning to not do anything with her presuming the weather would be more cooperative later. It was bright and sunny, while a little windy. Anyway, she grazed away and seemed to enjoy it. Another trainer in the barn also seemed to have a similar idea (not do something in the morning but in the afternoon) as he had a couple of his horses turned out in porta pads (round pens).

Breeders' Cup has decided to add three new races to its program, making it a ten race card over two days: Breeders' Cup Adds Three New $1-Million Races. The new races are: Juvenile Turf; Fillies and Mares Sprint and Mile Dirt. I am sure there are lots of reasons why this is a good idea, but this addition does come in the wake of TV viewership of Breeders' Cup declining by close to 50% this year.

Update 1286: Mrs. Jackson just called, and she visited Barbaro a little later this morning than usual (about noon time). Barbaro remains comfortable.

Update 1285: Rain, rain, rain and more rain. Certainly disruptive weather to regular training. The dirt track was closed, the synthetic track open and the fields too wet. I rode five in the shedrow, and am guessing I completed about ten miles jogging around the shed. These included Medi Man, Nonpariel and The Kielbasa Queen. First set I did venture out to the synthetic track on Who's Happy. That track really soaks up the rain and remains very bouncy (galloping on the dirt would have been horrible if the track was open anyway). As I was coming back from the track, leaving the tunnel, there were a couple of deer grazing by the pond, which itself was full of canada geese.

Gatornation looked fine after his race yesterday. Hawty Creek also appeared no worse for wear after her work yesterday. Her legs and feet are nice and cold, the trick with her is to encourage her to maintain her appetite. She ate pretty good last night, we will see in the next couple of days.

Update 1284: More details of Barbaro's left hind foot, Dr. Morrison's visit last wednesday, the work he did and why: HoofBlog article details new cast. Here is a lovely poem: The Greatest Winner.

It seems Hawty Creek was not the only one working yesterday. Invasor worked a half in 48 and change at Belmont: Invasor Tunes Up for Donn Handicap and NoBiz Like ShoBiz worked 5/8ths at Gulfstream in 1:01: Nobiz Like Shobiz Works as '07 Debut Nears. From these articles you will also note Jazil's next race is planned to be the Gulfstream Park Handicap, March 3, and that Funny Cide has now returned from a short winter holiday to begin his 2007 training.

Update 1283: Another comfortable day for Barbaro. I just spoke to Tom who visited Barbaro this afternoon. Tom groomed Barbaro and took him out for a nice pick of grass.

Update 1282: Gatornation was fourth today at Laurel. He was only beaten about two lengths for everything and almost looked a little unlucky in running. The winner seemed to get a little close to him, and while not taking away his running room seemed to get to the place Gatornation was trying to get to a little quicker.

I went back to Fair Hill to take Hawty Creek out for a pick of grass, and a good grooming. She seemed quite contented after her work and was happy grazing away ... until she heard the local hunt. The hounds were "speaking" and the horns were blowing. Of course that got Hawty Creek's attention, but no worries, the hunt has not caught a fox since we landed a man on the moon.

Barbaro wins another award, Post Gazette's animal of the year: Let the fur fly: Time for the running of the animals, 2006.

Update 1281: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). Mrs. Jackson called just after 10 am after her morning visit.

Hawty Creek worked this morning, her final piece of work before she runs (hopefully). I had a jockey work her, Jesus Bracho, who has just returned from a short stint riding in Saudi Arabia. She worked on the synthetic track (again) and went a half mile in just a tick over 49 seconds. She worked quite easily and was hardly blowing after the work. Her owner came to watch with his son Justin. Tom, the Jackson's farm manager, also came out to see the work. We went to breakfast afterwards to catch up. It did not take Hawty Creek too long to cool out, I will go back to Fair Hill in an hour or so to take her out for (another) pick of grass and groom her.

I saw Gatornation this morning getting ready to head to Laurel, he is running in the first race.

ACN and to hear it so early in the day! Thank you Alex for faithfully giving us updates and reports on Barbaro and other horsey items of interest.

#########
TVG (602 on DirecTV) is now showing racing from England and Ireland. Long long flat races - some 2 and 3 miles - and some steeplechasing. Lots of unfamiliar names, interesting stories. Apparently broadcasting racing from overseas is a new regular feature for TVG. Check it out.

##########
Stephanie - bless you and MHR for the work you do. Looking forward to before and after pics of the two new rescues who have been placed in your care by the authorities in the wake of a horrific abuse-via-gross-neglect situation. Anybody who doesn't even see fit to name their horses, and then continues riding them in the condition these critters were in - both starving; one with 10-11" hooves; the other with an untended lower leg wound that is requiring surgical treatment following several months of utter neglect - has no business being allowed to care for anything, human or animal. What is wrong with people, anyway? So glad you are able to take them in and do what is required to restore them to physical and emotional health. Please do keep us advised.

When we pray for Barbaro, and focus on his physical healing, I humbly ask you right now to include prayers for his peace of mind and continued courage. I also ask you to pray that Barbaro's caregivers are able to clearly hear Divine Guidance as to where Barbaro wants to be for the next phase in his healing.

Thank you God, that right and perfect decisions are made by Barbaro, and for Barbaro.

Do horses typically eat leaves off a tree? I found this cute photo of Barbaro nibbling from a tree the morning after the Derby win. He's too cute.

Alex, hugs to you for all you do for all of us.

FOBs - please rev up for the renewed battle to end horse slaughter in American. We again need to work together. Please contact your Senators and Representative to indicate your strong interest in getting this bill re-introduced this session. We must work hard and tirelessly!

The horses need us now more than ever. Over 100,000 died brutally in the slaughter houses in 2006. The SHs hear their death knell and are killing record numbers. We have no time to spare!

United we stand because WE BELIEVE!

Hello, Alex. I haven't posted here before. I always check your site while at work, and we aren't permitted to post. I check your site daily, and sometimes multiple times per day for Barbaro updates. You do a fantastic job.
Thought you'd be interested to know that the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette chose Barbaro as "Animal of the Year". This was written up in an editorial during the latter part of last week. Unfortunately, I don't know what became of the paper with that editorial--I had meant to keep it, copy it, and send it to you.
Thank you for your consistent and very impressive work on this site.
Barbaro is always in my thoughts, heart, and prayers.

TVG keeps showing a clip of Barbaro's Ky Derby win, and what strikes me the most is the closeup of Edgar Prado patting Barbaro on the right shoulder as they keep the impressive lead at the finish. TVG has been replaying this clip a lot the last few days and I've been meaning to mention it.

But today they went on to show clips from the Preakness of the false start and then the pull-up (I don't call it a breakdown, myself, because HE NEVER WENT DOWN, thanks to Edgar Prado) and the beginning of the long ambulance ride - hating to see this (it was part of TVG's Year in Review) - but remembering how and why I got here to TWR Comments, where I am privileged to be. Typing in tears still and again.

[Re-post]

Dear Fans of Barbaro,

Well, the AZ FOB's have done it again! Barb, Sherry, Daryl and Rosemary met for the second time to improve the lives of all horses. We met at a fifties diner and discussed strategies for our anti slaughter campaign.

Daryl is working on a myth-buster booklet we can use when talking to officials, or even our neighbors down the street. It is a point-counter point presentation. If somebody says, “What about the 90,000 horses,” Daryl has an answer! If they counter with, “Well the AVMA says it’s humane,” Daryl has an answer! He is working hard on it and we appreciate his efforts.

Rosemary brought along the letter Sharon wrote for the Tucson Citizen. It is a wonderful letter, well written and very poignant.

But, wait a minute; Daryl is on the phone with Senator Ensign’s aide Mike, using Sherry’s minutes! Here’s what Mike said:

“Our voices have been heard! All the calls we made DID MAKE A DIFFERENCE! He says we need to START CALLING NOW. Don’t wait for a new bill to be introduced. Call your state representatives in the House and the U.S. Senate N O W. Don’t stop and don’t wait!

We continued our meeting with other plans in the making. Earlier in the day we met with a board member from the Arizona State Horseman’s Association (ASHA), a voice they listen to here in Arizona. So now, we will be attending a meeting with ASHA to get them to back us on the issue.

Daryl will be putting together golf tournaments to help out the Last Chance Horse Rescue. Rosemary and Barb also discussed helping out some local rescues.

Sherry is in the process of setting up a meeting with our now famous Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio. He is an animal lover and goes after animal abusers. He is AWESOME!

We will all be contacting law enforcement agencies that use horses in their mounted patrols, to find out what they do with their retired mounts.

It was a very productive meeting and we’d like all of you in other states to GET TOGETHER so we can stop the insanity of horse slaughter.

NOW, get out there and CALL YOUR STATE REPS! ! !

Barb, Sherry, Daryl and Rosemary

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Mike Jensen for winning his second Eclipse Award. The Article titled "The Man Whose Job is saving Barbaro", was published May 28, 2006. What a great accomplishment! Way to Go Mike!

Posted by: Vicki Jasch at January 7, 2007 8:28 PM

Linda H,

The AQHA is pro slaughter. Their refusal to change their stance and the fact that they have ignored all the letters I've sent, has caused me to end my association with them.

I hope the FOB's will follow my lead and refuse to be a member of any organization that is pro slaughter. Please end subscriptions to any magazine that does not share our views. Money talks.

Has anyone else noticed a trend in our oppositions' point of view? Since they cannot argue that horse slaughter is inhumane, they are now focused on the perceived financial impact of keeping these horses off of dinner plates.

Without addressing the money issue we may be hard pressed to get legislation passed. They don't seem to understand that horse slaughter has dropped by 2/3 in recent years without requiring a single penny from the government. We need to focus on this in our communications with our Reps and Senators.

Barbaro Fans, F.Y.I:

The new IN TOUCH magazine features a story on Barbaro. I was shocked as they usually just write about Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, i.e. However, under the heading, INSPIRATIONAL, there is a picture of Barbaro and Dr. Richardson and another pic of Barbaro in his harness when his laminitis was really bad. It talks about Barbaro's miraculous recovery and how Mr. Jackson said he might go to Kentucky. Anyway, I just wanted to share with fellow F.O.B.'s because if you are like me, I love anything with Barbaro in it. I think it's on page 65. I was so happy to turn the page and there was Barbaro, handsome as ever~:)!

Sarah thanks for posting that article. Makes me a bit nervous when Dr Morrison said he is putting more weight on the right leg - but he knows what he is doing and I'm so glad he did the cast - hopefully he can distribute his weight evenly now - would hate for the L word to hit the right leg.

OK - now everyone - tell me I'm worrying about nothing - please!!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful Barbaro, hope you are having a nice relaxing Sunday, stay snug in your quarters - very damp, not much sun, and thought I saw a snow flurry just a few minutes ago. Have some crunchy apples, Stud Muffins, and a couple of your favorite mints.
Your Mom, God Bless her, brought your yummy Lael grass this a.m. I understand.
Barbaro, I lit another votive for you this morning before Mass, it's burning for you in the Holy Family niche, in the church - extra beautiful just now, very majestic just like you, with the creche displayed and, of course, the Magi today for the Feast of the Epiphany.
I would love to feel your beautiful and attentive ears, bet they're like velvet, and give you a kiss on your nose, but please know I send you many e-hugs and continuing Novena for you 24/7. Love you so much. Have your photo displayed under the gaze and protection of Our Lady.
My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro!

Not sure if anyone caught the Pennsylvania Farm Show footage Saturday night (PCN channel 21 - Comcast - Susquehanna Valley), Governor Ed Rendell was touring the Farm Show (now in progress) and came upon a tribute to you, BARBARO!! Apparently there were photos of you for people to take along, Governor Rendell had one, and made some lovely remarks about you and what a champion you are! #### You are not worrying about nothing! We have known since at least August that Barbaro is NOT out of the woods until the LH is acceptably strong - Dr. Richardson said that in the Talkin Horse segment in August, and he has repeated it many times over the past months. We started having vigils every Saturday after the Doc Steady article came out in October:

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/15747455.htm

and in this article Dr. Richardson said:

"If his foot doesn't come back and have a reasonable structure, it's not going to work. So we need him to get the foot to a reasonable structure and it is not an easy thing to do. Part of it's going to be the way he heals and some of it's going to probably be just dumb luck and another will be attention to detail."

No - you are not worrying about nothing. All of that said, I still really believe our collective prayer and positive consciousness make a big difference for Barbaro - we just have to stay focused and positive.

Finally, Susan E., how is Felix the Panther Man Cat? You haven't mentioned him for awhile. I hope all is as well for him as can be expected, in keeping with his situation. Please keep us posted!
######
Ooops! Almost forgot - what should we ask our Representatives and Senators regarding reviving S1915? We need to use appropriate language, that which will really get this thing rolling again! I am open to suggestions on this!

Thanks and Warmest Regards from Laura S. in Wet Windy Wild Snohomish, WA!

AZ PEOPLE - you rock! I especially look forward to the idea of a "myth-buster" booklet - think that would be very helpful for all of us who want to be sure to give the right responses.
Thanks for what you're doing...and it sounds like you have fun being together, too!

I have been more worried ever since we saw the newscast the other day. Somewhere in the middle Dr. Morrison does say that if Barbaro can also grow the hoof then he will be a miracle horse. I watched that part a number of times. He wasn't defeated when he said this, but he also wasn't optomistic like Dr. R. Yes, Dr. R is very realisitic but he also believes he can pull of the impossible. Dr. Morrison doesn't hit me as that kind of Doc. Please believe me in that I am not putting Dr. Morrison down at all for what he said. It just made me so very worried.

All,

Thank you for all your kind words. Our meeting was so much fun, except for the times we spoke about the slaughter. Needless to say, there were some tears shed. But what a wonderful thing that Barbaro brought us all together. Sherry and Rosemary are a lot of fun. Daryl is just plain EVIL! (LOL)

For National Television Feature

"Honorable mention in the National Television Features category went to ESPN for its feature on Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, which aired during ESPN's Belmont Stakes coverage on June 10 of last year. Heather Lombardo was the producer."

OK, let's add this up:

2. Honorable mention for writing was about Barbaro.

3. Television Eclipse Awards for Live Racing - was about Barbaro.

4. Honorable mention for Television Eclipse Awards for Features - was about Barbaro.

The article with Dr. Morrison's comments scare me too. I will continue to pray that Barbaro is okay. He has come so far. I just hope he can go the distance as he always has in the past.

Linda, and Joyce,

I'm not disputing what you're saying about the AQHA, but when you speak about the AQHA, you're talking about an awful lot of people who belong to this particular organization. I work at the track with Q'horses and Q'horse people, and many of them (most in fact) are AQHA members. I have yet to meet a single one who is pro-slaughter. Some that I've talked to, have no position either way, but most are not pro-slaughter. Not the ones I've spoken to anyway. My anti-slaughter poster still hangs in the jocks room at LSP, and has been there since just after the Q'horse meet began. My point is that you're condemning a whole organization for what could very well be only a handful of people that are pro-slaughter. Please take care in who you're attacking okay? I just feel you're being a bit too general. The AQHA is not one person.

Hay Bobby, I am so glad to hear you had ACN. I too felt some trepidation upon reading that article and hearing Dr. Morrison's interview, but you are very healthy and that counts for a lot. We will not give up and we know you certainly won't! It takes a long time to grow a new hoof. One day at a time.

Steve, I am so glad to hear Bdude is rallying! He is a strong, brave little guy.

Laura S, Felix was doing well till today. He is having a very bad day today and he's deteriorated. If he isn't better by tomorrow I will have to let him go. He seems to be telling me....

Well I'm not a member of the AQHA and don't care to become one. What individuals say on behalf of an organization may only be their opinions and not a whole bunch of people. I too have yet to speak to a vet that is pro-slaughter. But the person who has a business in their name may very well say whatever they want for their organizations. It just seems unfair to put the AQHA's very good and well known name out there to be condemned. Considering it speaks for just too many people, in too general of a way. I've seen nothing on their web site that says they're pro-slaughter. So I think they must be reluctant to speak at all on the issue. And this is a very good thing if they are indeed pro-slaughter. I'm attending the AQHA awards banquet on January 15th in Dallas, as Jim won the leading jockey of Tx. award for 2006. I'm planning to ask everybody I can as to their views and how they came to their views. I'm not going there to fight with anyone but I will if need be!!

Here is what the APHC has posted on their web site as to their pro-slaughter views. It's kinda easy to argue each of these points. We've been doing it for 6 months now. Why don't we write them a bunch of letters arguing their views? Whatta ya say FOB's? Wanna try? I'm gonna but here is the link for you. ApHC Pro-Slaughter letter After all there's been on TV these ppl are still calling slaughter humane and calling horses livestock. Sarah, you will not be the only one having a fit. Oh, and lets add that the Jacksons better win Owners of the Year for everything they have been thru. So many people would have been turned off to racing if it wasn't for Barbaro, the Jacksons' Michael, Dr. R, etc.

Does anyone know if we can see or listen to the awards live?

Good night Barbaro, sleep well and continue to heal.

Hope you are faring better with your weather now, than previously were. I have not been watching too much news, too depressing. Dad was stationed in Montgomery at Maxwell AFB during time of Texas Tower deaths/incident. He said he remembered hearing about it afterwards but did not know details until I informed him of them in article you showed me. He was to say the least-SHOCKED by the negligence of the higherups to come and remove these poor unfortunate souls from their untimely, gruesome and senseless deaths.

I tried to find info on LSD USS Cabildo, Dad said he had heard of it, but I cannot find anything. I probably am not searching in correct way. Having compuserve dial-up and no great search engine capabilities seems to make finding good articles imposiible. Makes me feel dumb as a brick. I been missing all you gals and guys! sorry so long...:(

Hiya, Bobbey! I'm sorry if your day at NBC was a rainy one. We had a gloriously sunny day here on the eastern coast of CT. Ms. Nikita had a nice walk up the hill to the battlefield, so this made her very happy. "All creatures great & small." May your evening be filled with refreshing slumbers and may you rise to great another work week of healing. Grow, hoofie, grow! Now we need to come up with a list of all the organizations who DO support the anti slaughter bill. That will make me feel better! I bet that list is much longer that the list of those who don't support it. Let's start with every horse rescue organization in the US! Then let's move on to every humane society group in the US. I didn't notice but one thoroughbred group mentioned (in Indiana) nor was there any mention of an Arabian horse group, an Appaloosa group, Warmblood group, Dressage Organizations, Jumping Organizations, Hunters Groups, etc., of which there are many. None of these and many, many more are not on the black list.

Dora, we are going to have more rain with wind, then a COLD front is coming our way! Whether or not we get snow, and if so, how much, will depend on the timing of the Arctic Blast coming in from Canada. A friend, a fellow rider just emailed me this:

I Ride

I ride. That seems like such a simple statement. However, as many women
who ride know, it is really a complicated matter. It has to do with power
and empowerment. Being able to do things you might have once considered
out of reach or ability. I have considered this as I shovel manure, fill
water barrels in the cold rain, wait for the vet/farrier/electrician/hay
delivery, change a tire on a horse trailer by the side of the freeway,
or cool a gelding out before getting down to the business of drinking a
cold beer after a long ride.

The time, the money, the effort it takes to ride calls for dedication.
At least I call it dedication. Both my ex-husbands call it 'the
sickness'. It's a sickness I've had since I was a small girl
bouncing my model horses and dreaming of the day I would ride a real
horse. Most of the women I ride with understand the meaning of 'the
sickness'. It's not a sport. It's not a hobby. It's what we do
and, in some ways, who we are as women and human beings.

I ride. I hook up my trailer and load my gelding. I haul to some
trailhead somewhere, unload, saddle, whistle up my dog and I ride. I
breathe in the air, watch the sunlight filter through the trees and
savor the movement of my horse. My shoulders relax. A smile rides my
sunscreen smeared face. I pull my ball cap down and let the real world
fade into the tracks my horse leaves in the dust.

Time slows. Flying insects buzz loudly, looking like fairies. My
gelding flicks his ears and moves down the trail. I can smell his sweat
and it is perfume to my senses. Time slows. The rhythm of the walk and
the movement of the leaves become my focus. My saddle creaks and the
leather rein in my hand softens with the warmth.

I consider the simple statement; I ride. I think of all I do because I
ride. Climb granite slabs, wade into a freezing lake, race a friend
through the manzanita all the while laughing and feeling my heart in my
chest. Other days, just the act of mounting and dismounting can be a
real accomplishment. Still I ride, no matter how tired or how much my
seat bones, or any of the numerous horse related injuries, hurt. I ride.
And I feel better for doing so.

The beauty I've seen because I ride amazes me. I've ridden out to
find lakes that remain, for the most part, unseen. Caves, dark and cold,
beside rivers, full and rolling, are the scenes I see in my dreams. The
Granite Stairway at Echo Summit, bald eagles on the wing, and bobcats on
the prowl, add to the empowerment and joy in my heart.

I think of the people, mostly women, I've met. I consider how
competent they all are. Not a weenie amongst the bunch. We haul 40ft
rigs, we back into tight spaces without clipping a tree. We set up camp.
Tend the horses. We cook and keep safe. We understand and love our
companion, the horse. We respect each other and those we encounter on
the trail. We know that if you are out there riding, you also shovel,
fill, wait and doctor. Your hands are a little rough and you travel with
out makeup or hair gel. You do without to afford the 'sickness' and
probably, when you were a small girl, you bounced a model horse while
you dreamed of riding a real one.

Top award and homecoming for Barbaro?

Support in the US for Horse of the Year honours for Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is growing, with many commentators noting that, beyond his impressive but short racing career, his greatest performance in past months has been his courageous recovery from a shattered leg and laminitis.

Although there is no timeframe for it, Barbaro may be leaving the New Bolton centre where he has been undergoing treatment since last May. Where his new home will be remains under question. He needs a facility where his recovery can continue and he is close to veterinary care if needed, and where the climate enables him to move around, especially during winter.

Before Christmas Barbaro was examined by Dr Scott Morrison, head of the equine podiatry service at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. Morrison did some minor work on Barbaro's left hind foot, and made recommendations concerning the management of that foot.

Dr Dean Richardson, Barbaro's main veterinarian, said Barbaro was stable and comfortable but doctors are concerned about the long term management of his left hind foot, which is prone to laminitis.

However, he said: "His comfort on both hind limbs is good and his overall condition is excellent."

Hello Barbaro,

So, today you got to go outside with Tom and graze a bit. I'm happy for you! We all know how you enjoy being outside.

Today, I tried following you lead and spending time outside. I decided to take my two kids (dogs) for a walk. It would be Bosko's first!

I carried Bosko to the end of the driveway. Emma's not too struck on going for walks. Well, after setting Bosko down, he's tugging on the leash to start down the street. Emma is tugging on her leash to go back to the house! We then had a "wishbone" effect happening with me in the middle.

Neither dog was giving in. My relief finally arrived when Emma slipped out of her collar, leaving me to hold one empty leash.

Hoping nobody saw this whole thing, a neighbor comes out their front door, laughing, and while holding a bottle, asks me if I need a drink!

Barbaro, I'm so glad that your outside time has more dignity to them! I need to rethink going for walks with the kids!

Are you ready with your blanket? I noticed today that you received a request from Lisa in Colorado to use one of your heavier blankets! Lisa is feeling the chill of all the snow that they are dealing with.

Okay, I'll tell her Honey... Lisa, you may use Barbaro's heaviest blanket anytime. All he wants in return: a kiss! You can find the blanket UNDER Barbaro! He figures this way, he'll know when you're there, so he can get his kiss! Take care and keep warm Lisa!

Okay Honey, let's pull your blanket up a bit higher tonight. While you sleep, let the healing continue, and tomorrow, your strength will carry you through the day.

Your Dream Angels are patiently waiting. It seems they have plans for you to have some of the sweetest dreams imaginable!

I love you so much Honey. I'll be here in the morning. Now close your eyes and sleep. Good night. XXOOxo

#####

Hello Hope,

I hope your day was a day for building strength for you. Buiding up your health, trust and love. It's a tall order, I know, but you now have everything you need to do this.

Your friend Barbaro wanted me to tell you that he has been busy making wishes, saying prayers and...lighting candles for you. It seems that you have gotten into Barbaro's heart as well!

Now close your eyes Hope. Start on your sweet dreams filled with love. I will look for an update tomorrow, okay? I love you. Good night. xxoo

A (hopefully) small worry here: Barbaro "knows his people, too," notes Mrs. Jackson. Will he have heart pangs from missing any of the PA regulars in KY? Please don't let him get down in spirit.

Funny thing is--I really DO have a sister named Mary Ellen AND a brother named John-boy (well-John) of course cannot forget lil Diane the baby sis. :0)

Steve and Bdude & Bdudette-I am tonight wishing I could be a fly on the wall to see that sister boppin you around. My Sweetness always did the same to her brother also, when he was not 100%. It is weird, I did not know others did it too.I thought she waw being mean, but she was showing concern and what I deemed as encouragement to GET UP, and act yourself, bucko! Sweet kitties.

Susan E.- I can barely respond about your Felix I am so despaired for you. I wish I could send you a giant hug and a large cup of hot chai latte to sip on. Please hold Felix and just FEEL him, SMELL him. You have to remember the good happy sweetness of him. I love your gentleness.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned - apologies if it has. The February 2007 issue of Ladies' Home Journal has a really nice article featuring Gretchen Jackson and Barbaro. There is a photo of Mrs. Jackson with Barbaro right after his Derby win and another photo of Mrs. Jackson giving Barbaro his Lael grass. I believe Dr. Richardson is in the background of that picture. I had not seen either of those pictures before and the article even mentions the "Barbaro Maniacs"! The article reads like it was written a while ago, but it's very nice and positive. It's on page 62 of the magazine and is entitled "The Horse That Love Saved".

...another aside on racing, Harry Aleo's horses, to be exact -

VICARINO won his stakes race last weekend;
VICTORINA barely lost (by a head, and gaining...) her stakes race yesterday; and
SMOKEY STOVER won his allowance race today, by 10 lengths!

QUITE A RUSH is scheduled for a stakes race at Golden Gate Fields next Saturday, the 13th. She is apparently recovered from a little overwork during November/December, preparing for stakes races which didn't happen.

BRITE N'HAPPY had a fast workout yesterday, so she should be up again soon.

There's more in the forum under the various horses' names...

Fascinating information on Barbaro and his hooves... much fuel for thought and prayer. I hope he makes it out of NBC before the weather gods change their minds about the NE.

The Eclipse Awards will be fascinating, too. Just think - if you took every aspect of Barbaro out of the awards as announced, there is very little left - ! He has rightfully dominated the racing news and also brought this humanitarian and compassionate journey into the general public's living rooms. Should he and his connections win the awards we think they should, it will again make news, in a very good way, and sustain the positive angles of horse racing directly attributable to them... track safety, equine medical advances, anti-horse slaughter and TB rescue issues, humane alternatives to track injury, etc., etc.

I hope, in the meantime, the powers that be concentrate on keeping the hoof fairy happy...

Another comfortable day...atta boy! Now you snuggle down, stretch out those wonderful legs of yours, and have a peaceful, healing night's rest. Sweet dreams precious boy. You're in my thoughts and prayers and heart. I love you Barbaro.

The miracle continues...

I visit this site twice a day but have never commented. I too have become concerned about a move for Barbaro. He loves his family so much I pray that he won't long for them and become depressed. I think that it will be difficult for everyone to send Barbaro on to the next part of his road to full recovery. Kentucky is a beautiful place with lots of lovely sweet grass but dear Mrs. Jackson won't be there every day to give it to him. He is certainly loved around the world and there will be people stepping up with loving care no matter where he goes, but I do worry about this. Alex, can you address this or could someone? Thanks

Jock4hire,

I did not condemn any individual in my post regarding the AQHA, I condemn the viewpoint of the organization as a whole. I was a member of the AQHA for nearly twenty years, received weekly emails and monthly magazines from them as well as having spent several years as a ring-master for national and state level QH shows. THEY ARE PRO SLAUGHTER.

The AQHA has repeatedly spoken out in favor of continuing horse slaughter regardless of the viewpoints of its members. I have sent them dozens of emails and letters over the past few years and haven't yet received a single response back from them.

You are correct in your assumption that many members are still unaware of the opinion of the AQHA or other registries. If legislation is not passed by the time show season starts, I would suggest that we (with approval of the show management) hand out flyers and get the facts out.

Good Monday morning Alex, Bobby and fellow fans,

Shelley A.

Thanks for posting the information we need to get started with the slaughterhouse legislation. I have already contacted my Congressman and 2 Senators. I have been waiting patiently for this "GO" signal. I have also followed the suggestion of another FOB and created a sheet of labels re: the issue. I put a label on every single item I put in the mail. These are very sturdy labels. I hope the message gets read by many while the mail is on the way to wherever it's going.

Have a great day all!

URGENT ALERT! 110th CONGRESS OPENING SPECIAL CALLING AND FAXING
CAMPAIGN IN SUPPORT OF THE AHSPA

ASK LEGISLATORS TO END HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THE US

As you surely already know, the 110th Congress started last Thursday
and now legislators are back in their DC offices. Since this is a new
legislature, all the bills from the 109th Congress are dead and now
we have to start all over from zero.

While we await the reintroduction of the American Horse Slaughter
Prevention Act (AHSPA), the pro-slaughter forces are already

I also ask you to pray that Barbaro's caregivers are able to clearly hear Divine Guidance as to where Barbaro wants to be for the next phase in his healing.

Thank you God that Barbaro finds his right and perfect home, where he is loved beyond measure, and also receives the best possible medical care.

Looks like we have our "marching orders" from ShelleyA. Time to call our Senators and Representative and urge them to co-sponsor the Ban on Horse Slaughter. We already know that Whitfield has introduced a bill protecting the wild horses. Let's hope this Bill passes asap as the wild horse and burro populations are being descimated by the BLM as we speak.

Today, Monday 8th, please call and fax both your two US Senators and all the Representatives from your state requesting them to cosponsor and act on the AHSPA as soon as it is reintroduced and keep
calling and faxing during the week.

In addition, please forward this alert to all yours contacts (family, friends, co-workers, etc…) and ask them to do the same.

It is very important that as many people as possible contact legislators during the next week in order to counter the lies and the pressure of the pro-slaughter forces and their expensive lobbyists and to make the new Congress clear that Americans want horse slaughter for human consumption abroad banned.

Below is an updated phone and fax directory of the 110th Congress, including contact information for both Representatives and Senators sorted by state (click on the State):

## I have written a letter to the new governor of Florida to ask for his help in putting pressure on our state reps and senators to get the horse slaughter passed. Florida has the 2nd highest horse population in the country and we have many reps returning who are against us. Will see if I get a response.

I received an interesting email from EQUINE ADVOCATES, too long to post right now but everyone please go to www.equine advocates.com and read the information about why the bill didn't pass and what must be done differently this time.

Attention All FOB's!!

I work with an anti-slaughter organization who has been working on trying to get a national ad campaign off the ground.

Their targets would be the following:

People Magazine
USA Today
Vanity Fair
AARP
Reader's Digest
Newsweek
Time
Some of their members should have been lobbyists, that's how talented they are. They have already been featured in smaller publications and their stories even hit the AP Wire. :)

However, like anybody else NOT connected with the Pro Slaughter side, funding is a major issue. In order to get to any of the above publications, the ad would have to be designed by a professional advertising company, even though a draft/idea is already there. And that would just be for starters.

Do we have anyone here who has connections to a reputable advertising company who would like to either donate their services or be a part of a huge anti slaughter campaign? <
