Barbaro Updates: 197

updates are now here.

Update 1439: The fifth clip from the Hennegan Brothers (First Saturday in May): Barbaro grazing at Fair Hill after the Derby.

Update 1438: How much trouble did Invasor have to overcome? He clearly prooved a worthy horse of the year for 2006 in his 2007 debut. MUCH the best in a very troubled trip, winning going away with ease.

Update 1437: NoBiz Like ShoBiz won the Holy Bull by two lengths. He ran green, switched leads late and looked like he was lugging a little. If this horse learns to run straight and focused then we will see something very different perhaps. He is at the top of his division. Scat Daddy was off the bridle early. The field was strung out in the end.

Update 1436: NPRs Scott Simon: Barbaro Death Touches Admirers.

I am fascinated at how those who have reported on the Barbaro story have been directly effected by the story. Jeannine Edwards provided us her perspective. Jack Ireland, who has followed the story for the Wilmington News Journal provides his: 'Big Fella' showed class from start to finish. I had a nice phone coversation the other day with Jack, much of which is reflected in this article.

Hawty Creek is back in the entries, for tuesday at Philadelphia Park (I just returned from grazing her). Breeders' Cup and Eclipse Award winner Miesque's Approval ran a dull race in his 2007 debut, getting beaten by a never threatening four lengths.

Update 1435: There was a light layer of snow on the ground this morning, and on the Tapeta track. I was curious how the track would handle this throughout the morning especially since it is a saturday and saturdays usually mean plenty of horses working. My first set was Hawty Creek and she galloped across the track as the first horse to do so in the morning. The track felt fine and Hawty Creek felt great ... it was cold however. My second set was a work, 5/8ths no less ... I worked in company with Jesus Bracho and really the track was good. Subsequently I worked a couple more and my last horse was coming off the track at 10 am, and still the track was good. The one problem with the track is it is getting very busy and there are definitely a few near misses in the mornings with horses ducky and diving away from each other etc. but I don't think anything bad happened today. You did have to keep your goggles down for most of the morning to avoid snow blindness as once the sun got up it was very bright. No superbowl gossip (its hard to really think it is the superbowl this weekend) but a couple of comments about Brett Favre's return for one more go at another superbowl ring! Lynn and Denise visited, it was nice, but I was soooo busy (seven horses ridden and looking after Hawty Creek) I could have been a better host.

Here are a couple of must reads:
Horse racing community won't forget Barbaro ...lets hope not, there is much work to do!
Cohen: A champion dies, reflects on how Barbaro has effected us.

Update 1434: A Tribute to Barbaro from a Fan of Barbaro: Barbaro Tribute.

A couple of Fans of Barbaro are planning to visit Fair Hill this morning, wrap up! It looks like it will be a busy morning.

Update 1433: Here is the fourth clip of Barbaro from "The First Saturday in May": Peter on Barbaro galloping at Fair Hill. Very cool.

Gary Stevens speaks out in response to a very poorly written article in LA Times. I have met Gary a few times and he has supported this site with his comments.

Good evening FOBs!

Posted by: chris byers at February 3, 2007 2:06 AM

Okay, I hate to say this, but now we're into conspiracy theories here.

Edgar doesn't strike me as the type who would look and not yell.

I don't believe this at all. Horses do take bad steps. Looking to blame people at this point does no good. It's not going to change anything. They won't pull the whole Preakness to a stop if a horse breaks prematurely through the gate, even if he's the modern-day Secretariat.

Please please please, let it go. It's beginning to sound like the theory of our own government flying planes through the twin towers.

I hate this.

There is no reason to stir this up. I don't believe it of the any of them - the good people who worked the gate, the vet, the trainer, the owners, the jockey, the network, the CEO of Pimlico.

This makes me mad.

Please stop.

HEY GUYS....

Upon reflecting on this week's events, I hope you will take a few moments with me. The very nature of grief has caused me to re-examine many things and to put others in perspective.

I know the realities of this week, and I know its pain. But, for me, I have come to an inescapable conclusion that I hope you will consider.

I don't see BARBARO as gone. All I have to do is read this board, and he is here. I see him in all of you...in your stories and in your prayers. I see him in your anger and and even in your fear. And I see him in your hopes and dreams for tomorrow.

My friends, we are BARBARO'S legacy. Where we go, he follows, and, when we speak, it is his thoughts and his voice that sounds.

BARBARO never knew the word QUIT. It is an essential part of his legacy that we, too, put this word to rest. His courage is our courage, and his love, our love.

We must make this legacy one of PRIDE and DETERMINATION. Whatever your choice may be...MAKE IT COUNT. We all have our parts to play in this LEGACY. Our work on THE BARBARO BILL (HR 503) has only begun... Others, who started the petition for SAFER RACETRACK SURFACES have only , perhaps, a few turns before thundering down the stretch to the finish line...and MIRACLE HORSE RESCUE, an organization hand picked by this group, has the wonderful prospect of FOALS ON THE WAY as well as MANY horses waiting to be loved.

To sum it up, WE HAVE WORK TO DO...A LEGACY TO FULFILL. BARBARO did his part...NOW IS TRULY OUR TIME.

We came to know and love BARBARO as few others. His days were our days, and his nights were our nights. The JACKSONS took us in and allowed us to love their boy...DR RICHARDSON gave us the incalculable gift of TIME with our dear BARBARO.
RACHEL AND ALIE gave us peace of mind that our hero would be well tended... ALEX gave us our updates...MICHAEL MATZ gave us a horse ready for any challenge...and NEW BOLTON gave him a place that was more than a HOME.

WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO HAVE LIVED IN THE TIME OF BARBARO. As an amateur historian, I cannot fully express how lucky we are. People for all of eternity will talk about BARBARO THE GREAT...BARBARO THE MAGNIFICENT...AND BARBARO THE UNDEFEATED.

It is up to us to make this legacy take a shape and form that does honor to BARBARO.

Whatever you chose...MAKE IT REAL...MAKE IT COUNT...and MAKE IT YOUR OWN...

WE ARE BARBARO'S LEGACY...LET'S SHOW THEM WHAT WE ARE MADE OF!!!

....FOR WE HAVE LIVED IN THE TIME OF BARBARO....

In Re:Crying and Tears
I printed an inspirational type book for a nice Pastor named Jack.
Well Jack came in to see me today, and I told him about Barbaro. And how sad I was etc....
Jack told me this story, and it sure helped me.Hope it helps the rest of my Fob's too.
Jack told me about a woman who lost her only daughter. The woman was devastated by her loss.
All her friends tried to help, but her grief was overwhelming. She cried, and lost her love of life. For her life had been her little girl.
One night she fell asleep exhausted, and dreamed she was in heaven.
There was a parade,of little girls,in white dresses, all holding bright burning candles.
She looked for her little girl, and sure enough, she was there.
The little girl had a candle with no flame.
Why isn't your candle lit, asked the mother???
It was Mommy, said the little girl. But your tears
kept putting it out.!
I don't know who Jack got this story from or who to credit for it.
But maybe we should try to move forward now,and be brave like Barbaro was when he faced the unknown.
For I wouldn't want to be the one to put his candle out.
Thanks Jack.

I've learned something very interesting. I've always believed that 'it's a small world'. But more and more, I find it truly is.

I once felt that certain people were just out of reach- be it a certain societal class or monetary class, what have you.

In the last three quarters of a year, I have learned how very reachable most 'strangers' are. That is very promising and heartening, to me.

(repost for west coast friends...)

I'd like to share a very special song with you - I'm going to post the lyrics here in case the link below doesn't work for you...if you can cut/paste it, it appears that you can listen as well as read the words. The only times I've ever heard this song were when the choir of the church where I work sang it...and it captured me immediately!

Kleenex time - sorry, all! Remind you of anyone we know and love?

DEDICATED TO MY DARLING BARBARO - HE FLEW TOO SOON, BUT HE LIVED WELL!

There's a place I call my own where I can stand by the sea,
and look beyond the things I've known and dream that I might be free.
Like a bird above the trees gliding gently on the breeze,
I wish that all my life I'd be without a care and FLYING FREE!

But life is not a distant sky without a cloud, without rain,
and I can never hope that I can travel on without pain.
Time goes swiftly on its way, all too soon we've lost today,
I cannot wait for skies of blue or dream so long that life is through.

So life's a song that I must sing, a gift of love I must share,
and when I see the joy it brings, my spirit soars through the air.

Like that bird up in the sky, life has taught me how to fly.
For now I know what I can be, and now my heart is
FLYING FREE!

(sobbing!!!!)

"All human life has its seasons and cycles

and no one's personal chaos can be permanent.

Winter, after all, gives way to spring and summer,

though sometimes when branches stay dark

and the earth cracks with ice

one thinks they will never come,

that spring, and that summer, but they do, and always."

Action Called For!

Action delivered. The AZ FOB’s have been very busy this week, despite the tears and anguish.

On Tuesday, we met with the Glendale Equestrian Club to deliver our spiel to ban horse slaughter. It was a small meeting, but at the grass roots level, you hope that even one person will pass on the information. It will also be in their newsletter, which goes out to all members.

Today (Friday) was just about the most incredible day of our lives. The Sheriff of Maricopa County here in Arizona, is known all over the United States, the world, and even on Mars, according to Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Just google him, if you want to know. (He is the one who keeps the inmates in tents in the middle of the desert and has them wear PINK underwear!) They get thousands of hits every day on their website. Today, we got to meet him!

Somehow, Sherry managed to get an appointment with him, so we all trudged into his office, not quite sure what to expect. We made our introductions, and explained why we were there. Little by little, Sheriff Joe became interested. He asked why politicians don’t back the animal welfare issues. Americans LOVE THEIR PETS! Sheriff Joe goes after animal cruelty cases and is the only law enforcement division in the state that has a separate animal cruelty unit. “If I ever catch anybody abusing a horse in Maricopa County, watch out!” Those are his own words.

We were scheduled for a half hour of Sheriff Joe’s time. As the meeting progressed, he called more and more people into the meeting. By the time he was done, he had three of his staff personnel in there with us.

When Sheriff Joe understood that the Europeans were eating American horses, he became “inflamed,” as Sherry put it.

Finally, he asked, “What can I do for you?” Can you believe it? He is on our side! He has agreed to write a letter of endorsement for both bills to every member of the 110th Congress, and Daryl will deliver them personally to Washington, D.C. ! He also agreed to do a 20-30 second public announcement and also a video endorsement which he will put on his website and said we could download it to our site, and others. Sheriff Joe will talk to Senator Kyl himself to get him onboard. AMAZING!

We came out of the meeting floating on air. Barbaro could not have been more proud of us! We are hyped and ready to keep up the good fight here in Arizona and the horse world !

Respectfully submitted by, Barb Daryl, Sherry Melissa and Rosemary, of AZ

I'm thrilled to hear tha Joe Arpaio was more than receptive! He can be a very good ally. When he gets mad about something...

But, let's not let him put horses in pink underwear.

I LOVE it Pamela. I am so worried that Barbaro will soon be forgotten and I am committed to Barbaro's legacy. We are the ones who can make this happen. We owe it to him.

The one thing I have learned this week is that his death has not diminished my feelings about him one bit.

just read gary steven's letter and it hit the mark SO well---i've had a building frusteration over the past week reading these negative smears disguising itself as serious journalism. this was not the only one but the fact that it was in the LA TIMES --it definately needed a serious rebuttal(spell?) from someone like gary stevens--well done gary!! one other point--concern and out pouring of grief for a horse DOES NOT have to be mutually exclusive from concern for other serious world events.....so to those who beg to differ--find another soap box for bleeping sakes.....and you get a life.....

Alex, thank you so much for posting the beautiful words from Kathy Anderson. And the link to Gary Stevens website--I always thought he was a class act, and this just affirms that belief!

Barbaro, our beauty, my heart still aches for you. Run free, dear colt.

My dear FOB, I found this poem by Rod McKuen to share with all of you. May it give comfort to those who need it.

An Outstretched Hand

Each of us was made by God
and some of us grew tall.
Others stood out in the wind
their branches bent and fell.
Those of us who walk in light
must help the ones in darkness up.
For that's what life is all about
and love is all there is to life.

Each of us was made by God
beautiful in His mind's eye.
Those of us that turned out sound
should look across their shoulders once
and help the weak ones to their feet.

It only takes an outstretched hand.

Sleep peacefully tonight, my friends. None of you are alone.

Peace,
Kathy from Toledo and the cats

Barbaro, still missing you terribly but promising to finish what you started and stop the brutal slaughter of your brothers and sisters. I have found some comfort knowing it was your decision to go home. And peace knowing you didn't leave us on that cold track in May and were surrounded by love the past months with your mom, dad and Dr. Richardson. We all got to know and love you so much. Thank you for your brave fight and I am honored to have had you part of my life through this site.

I have the picture of Barbaro with his four feet off the ground and Edgar signed it for me at Calder on December 30. I will cherish our conversation and the picture forever. I hope Edgar is healing also.

Nancy in Ct,

Thanks for the song. IT means so much for each of us to find our own special meaning and rememberance for our boy. Thanks for sharing. WOnderful..just wonderful.

Jake.. I totally agree.

We dont "DESERVE" any type of answer. THis is childish and this type of posturing is not what we are all about. Barbaro sacrificed everything so that we could all come together and make a difference for all the horses and everything and eVERbuDDy that he loved.

I will go to the mat..into the dirt.. to defend the kindness and professionalism of Michael Matz, Edgar Prado,Peter Brette, Kathy Anderson, and Mr and Mrs Jackson. I am really sick of all this C-R-A P!!! Cut it out. Cut it out now!

If you are so concerned about this then you better go out and become a track veterinarian and make the determinations yourself... instead of your weak armchair theories that you have no first hand knowlege of.

I have tried my best not to act out on some of these wild A** opinions, but this has begun to become ABSURD!

I guess I must have entered my ANGER phase...I apologize for coming on strong but Barbaro deserves better than this.

I WANT TO SHARE WHAT I CONSIDER ENCOURAGING NEWS. IN MY POSTS, I HAVE ALWAYS USED TEXAS IN MY DESCRIPTION, BUT WHAT I HAVE ALWAYS LEFT OUT WAS THE KAUFMAN PART, YES KAUFMAN, TEXAS, HOME OF ONE OF THE THREE US SLAUGHTER HOUSES. I OWN A SMALL RANCH HERE WHICH I SHARE WITH TWO MINIATURE HORSES, THREE RESCUED DOGS, THREE CATS AND THREE GEESE. AS I SAID IN MY POST DEFENDING THE JACKSONS, I AM A DIRECTOR OF A MEDICAL SCHOOL IN DALLAS WHICH IS 45 MILES FROM HOME. EVERY DAY, I DRIVE BY THE CROWN PLANT ON MY WAY TO AND FROM THE OFFICE. EVERYDAY, I AM REMINDED OF THE HORROR WHICH OCCURS THERE.

I SPOKE WITH THE MAYOR OF KAUFMAN THIS AFTERNOON AS I KNEW THE COURT OF APPEALS DEADLINE WAS TODAY. SHE IS VERY MUCH AGAINST THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE AND HAS BEEN VERY AGRESSIVE IN HER DESIRE TO SHUT THE PLANT HERE IN KAUFMAN DOWN. WE MAY NOT BE AS BIG AS FORT WORTH WHERE ONE OF THE OTHER PLANTS IS LOCATED, BUT AS SHE TOLD ME, WE ARE A PROGRESSIVE TOWN THAT HAS PUT ITS FOOT DOWN AND SAID NO TO CROWN. WHEN I TALKED TO HER, SHE HAD NOT HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT CROWN HAD APPEALED THE LATEST DECISION BUT SHE DID TELL ME THAT THEY HAD NOT SLAUGHTERED SINCE LAST MONDAY.

I AM FIFTY YEARS OLD AND NOT THE TYPE WHO IS GOING TO PICKET WITH SIGNS. I BELIEVE THAT THE WAY WE GET THINGS DONE IS TO BE PRO ACTIVE WHILE MAINTAINING OUR INTEGRITY AND OUR MORALS. WHEN WE, AS A GROUP, TRY TO GET THINGS ACCOMPLISHED, WE ARE REPRESENTING THOSE WHO CANNOT REPRESENT THEMSELVES. WE ARE NOT ONLY REPRESENTING THE MARES, FOALS, RETIRED, SLIGHTLY INJURED, SICK AND SOMETIMES STOLEN HORSES WHO ARE SHIPPED OFTEN TIMES IN DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS TO THESE SLAUGHTERHOUSES, BUT WE ARE REPRESENTING BARBARO AND PEOPLE LIKE THE JACKSONS, DR. RICHARDSON, MICHAEL, ETC WHO THROUGHOUT ADVERSITY HAVE MAINTAINED THE HIGHEST OF STANDARDS AND INTEGRITY.

I'M ASKING FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT AS WE TRY TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE HORSES, NOT ONLY HERE IN KAUFMAN, BUT THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. WE HAVE THE TASK OF TAKING CARE OF THOSE THAT CANNOT TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES.

GINNY
KAUFMAN, TX

I BELIEVE GOD LOVED BARBARO ENOUGH TO GIVE HIM TO THE JACKSONS AND THEN THE JACKSONS LOVED BARBARO ENOUGH TO GIVE HIM BACK TO GOD.

I received my Kentucky Derby book today and it is beautiful. Beautiful pictures of our Barbaro. I am trying to spread the word around about the slaughter houses in Texas. I told my doctor today and she didnt even know we had them in Texas. She is on our side now. Its a small step but small steps become big steps. They have been illigeal in Texas since 1949. It has never been enforced. I am really worried about the horses being taken to Mexico. We will fight for our cause until we get results. I miss Barbaro. still every morning my first thought is check to see if he had a good night and several more times a day for eight months. God Bless Barbaro and God bless Mr. R. and especially Roy and Gretchen Jackson for sharing him with us. God Bless you all for the work you are doing in Barbaros name. thats Dr. R not Mr. R.

FOB's:

It was one of the saddest moments of my life to read "Barabro euthanized" on this web site when I got to work on Monday morning. Like many of you, tears have been plentiful since then.

Throughout the summer and into the new year, even though I couldn't see Barbaro in person, just knowing he was alive and doing OK was always enough to put a smile on my day. Seeing him outside NBC, eating grass, being a horse, how wonerful. Then the bad week, then the worse weekend, and finally the end. One of the few comforts was from the Bard, who used the English language like no other; "Good night sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." Rest Barbaro, and know that we loved you as if you were are own.

A sorrowful week had continued through yesterday when I read about Barbaro's baby brother, and was delighted to see the photographs of him at http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=4639.1

How beautiful and full of promise he is. And maybe, just maybe, on that first Saturday in May 2009, we'll hear a call from the announcer that goes something like "he's Barbaro's brother...and he runs away from them all..."

After reading Gary Stevens' extremely well-put letter to the editor of the LA Times, I wrote one myself, seconding all that Gary said and also saying that I will never buy another LA times as long as T.J. Simers is employed there.

Maybe if others did the same, Gary's letter would have even more impact.

What Pamela just wrote truly exemplifies everything we’re dealing with here. So beautifully said Pamela. You make us proud.

I honestly believe everything in our lives happens for a reason. While at this time, the grief here is tremendous, we now what we need to do, the reason for it all.

The Jacksons were meant to own Barbaro, Michael Matz was destined to train him, Dr. Anderson to treat him while he was in training at Fair Hill, Dr. Richardson, while at New Bolton.

And Alex was meant to be our guide, our advisor, sometimes our “parent”, our leader, and always our inspiration.

We’ll get this job done, as Pamela said so well, we live in the time of Barbaro.

We won’t let him down.

Thank you all for writing to and sharing with us.

Leslie in MN,
Love your post! Amen.

Ginny in teaxs,
I don't know how you can drive by that plant every day! What courage. Loved your saying about God giving us B and the Jacksons giving him back. Beautiful.

Dr. A.,
Thank you for the beautiful description of Barbaro. That is how I have always pictured him.

Gary Stevens,
What a well written letter. There are a few other morons out there. Just do a google search and you will find them. Tommorrow night I will write them letters inspired by Gary to stand up for what is right.

Hennegan Bros.
I can hardly wait to see your movie!

AZ FOB's,
Thanks for the inspiration. I went to a few on-line communities last night that I use to frequent and talked to people about horse slaughter. They were horrifed. Pointed them to the petition and their senators.

Alex, thanks again for this website. You know, you have a dream job...getting paid to ride beautiful horses every day. If I had my life to do over again, I'd try my hardest to become an exercise rider like you. I didn't get into horses until 4 years ago at the age of 44, even though I've loved them all my life. Now I have my own drean horse, a beautiful Arabian mare, and my priorities are where they should be...my horse.

Gary Stevens.....thank you Gary for writing to the LA Slimes newspaper...they truly are slime.

Mr. Stevens letter was not in the LA Times letters to the editor today, will look tomorrow first thing and post to let folks know.

Wow the new Hennegan Bros footage of Barbaro awesome. Also today I looked up Nobiz Like Showbiz who runs in a race Barbaro won last year. Whoooo Nellie but he looks a bit like our Prince B, he is one handsome dude. His breeder is a woman as well.

Dear Alex,

Thank you for making my evening in part with most of the week being true red white and blue. The red part from crying my eyeballs out, the white what little showed through, and the blue for Barbaro's heavenly run in flight across the sky.

When I read Gary Stevens words, I STARTED TO LAUGH SO HARD, the tears rolled down for not mourning Barbaro but because it sounded exactly what I wrote about Definitions for Flaming Holy wars, leud/rude trolls, and flamebait for my comments ethics under our mission and about us sidelinks. Thank you so much for making me laugh as I really needed one. I just LOVE THIS EXCERPT from Gary's letter...

Simers refers to looking up the definitions of courageous and courage on dictionary.com. He should have looked up the words ignorance (the state or fact of being ignorant; lack of knowledge"), and arrogance ("offensive display of superiority or self-importance") while looking up the words, determination ("the act of coming to a decision or of fixing or settling a purpose"), will ("purpose or determination") and heart (the center of the total personality, the center of emotion, spirit, courage, or enthusiasm), all of which a champion is made of and which Barbaro and his connections have displayed to the utmost! He might want to make note for future reference that squirrel is defined on dictionary.com as a "bushy-tailed rodent". Please tell me and your readers where he was ever able to find a connection between the two!

YEA> Barbaro would CLEARLY BITE SIMERS FOR SURE!!! Winning TEAM For Barbaro...believe he is smiling and snorting back a big one!
CL for Bobby's Heavenly Heart: running free.

PS: Thank you very much for posting Dr. Anderson's letter...It really helped to know that she saw Barbaro as a hero just like me.
BE safe, and know Barbaro won't forget you.

I'm glad I came on tonight.

I was not going to--I need to spend more time with my Felix right now. But once he left my lap to go eat (!) I found myself crying again, thinking of Dr. Anderson's post. She last saw Bobby looking out his window at other horses. He fought so hard and so long, did everything asked of him and more, and just wanted to go be a horse, but his body would not let him. I'm still crying.

It is very comforting and inspiring to come here and see what our AZ Fobs have been up to, and to read the words of Ginny from Kaufman and Pammie. Ginny, I do not know how you do it, passing that hellhole every day. We are going to get that place shut down for good--this year.

It doesn't look like anyone answered your question. No, TB foals are not taken from their moms at 10-14 days. I think this was in response to why Barbaro wasn't born and raised at Lael?

Because the TB industry requires live cover the mares it is much easier to breed the mares on the farms where the stallions reside. When the foals are born they stay with their moms until they are 4-6 months old. When the babies are weaned they stay with other weanlings, etc. Horses are herd animals and that gives them the opportunity of play with other kids their own ages.

I requested that they fire him for his complete disregard for the feelings of the people who loved Barbaro & cared for him as well as for the beautiful, courageous horse he is/was. Your response was wonder, you obviously time & put much thought into it. Thank you again....every word was true. Simers should be fired & the LA Times is not a paper I will associate with since they put their stamp of approval on such garbage.

#### Forgive me for even giving TJ Simers another moment on this board, but having seen his February 1st column, a portion of which I've attached below, I think it's time that EVERY jockey, trainer and horse-racing professional in this country follows Gary Stevens' example and NAILS this guy! Pass it on, Alex!!

The excerpt:
"It's the oddest thing, the e-mail just keeps pouring in, and while I try to look at as many as I can, it's embarrassing the way everyone just wants to say nice things about the column on the dead horse.

Some of the e-mailers went a little over the top in ridiculing the dead horse, and while I was shocked, I think it's important everyone get their say.

Frankly, I thought some people might disagree with the column, but I'm flattered by all the praise. If there has been a dissenting opinion or two, I apologize if it has gotten lost in all the Page 2 tributes, and will try to be more observant."

His disrespect to Barbaro's connections is unforgivable and it has gone on all week.

Hello Barbaro,

In the past, I have come to you to tell you how I feel about some things, what I've heard or read about you or done during my day.

But now, you know everything about me. You know my thoughts, my actions, and the reasons for my behavior.

You see everything. You are everywhere. You live within each of us.....everyone.

Your loved ones and Fans are still in pain. We join together to offer comfort and loving memories. Each of us wanting to give more than we receive...

We're slowly finding our way. We may take different paths, at different speeds, in different ways. But you are our destination. Your inspiration, will, determination, strength and love.

Tonight the Minnesota air is dangerously cold. And it will continue for some time. But I will find comfort and warmth while wrapped up in my favorite blanket and thoughts of you...

I love you Honey. I miss you too... The video clips are a huge comfort and I play them many times. I am thankful that the brothers have released them.

May you have sweet dreams tonight Honey when you finish your race. I will see you in my dreams...and they will be so sweet, because of you. Good night Honey. I love you. XXOOxx

#####

Hello Hope,

I hope today was a good day for you. I look at your picture many times...you are precious.

I imagine it's nice and cozy in your stall with comforting straw strewn about ready for you to lay down and fall asleep.

Let's grab your blanket and pull it up high. The air is downright cold tonight.

Your Dream Angels are busy getting their things together to carry you off where beauty and love grows.

Please close your eyes Hope. Dream of your foal, your beautiful blessing... Shhhhh.. Good night Hope. I love you. xxoo

Hugs back to you Renee & all of you dear ones-

Sweet evening in Heaven Precious Barbaro-thanks for the snow you're sending down. It's so beautiful.

I am still struggling with words & feel like I'm stumbling through the dark & everything's been moved. My heart is still so heavy thinking of Our Boy & missing the little tidbits we'd gobble up as Alex typed them. Oh Alex...words are never enough! I'm sending you a warm hug, as I know you are mourning as well.

Although I don't know when I'll ever get caught up on reading the posts, I eagerly absorbed the posts regarding "signs" people have been getting. Is it possible for someone to set up a section entitled "signs" on the discussion board? I would love to be able to read & contemplate them all, one after the other. I've been feeling a deep need for a sign of reassurance & hope to receive something like this myself...and hopefully soon.

I haven't had the courage to view the beautiful tributes & I don't know when I will. My Mom & I were talking the other evening about how we still can't look at Lassie stories since our dear collie passed many years ago. I hope all of the tributes will be archived somewhere for posterity.

Anyone out there have an extra Breyer Barbaro still in the box? There aren't any left & eBay prices are crazy. I kept delaying the purchase as I couldn't afford it -- as they say, 'He who hesitates...!'

Bless you all & have an evening of peace & comfort.

Nitey nite Baby Face -- I miss those big brown knowing & soulful eyes of yours.
I love you Barbaro, always!

Wendy, thanks. No, its never too late to learn to ride or own a horse. The bonding is amazing...my mare owns my heart. I met a 70 year old man who got himself a baby mule. That mule got BIG, and the old man has a handful, but the love that mule has for the old man and vice versa is so very touching. There's nothing on this earth that compares to the bonding and love you get from a horse/mule/donkey/zebra/zorse/zonkey (yes, I've also met people who have pet zebras and zonkeys/zorses).

A happier evening to all here I hope. I was lost in work all of Monday and Tuesday and did not know the sad news until late Tuesday night when a dear friend mentioned how sorry he was to hear. I was on the web searching as soon as my phone line was clear. Sigh. Laminitis is such a horrific condition for horses and there is no way for them to be comfortable when multiple feet are involved. I remember how devastated I was when I heard about Secretariat. We do go on though. Even those who now find themselves stumbling from their pain will find eventually the happy memories will push the pain from their hearts. Till that day hang on like Barbaro did - facing each day's challenges squarely and with grace. Getting through one day at a time will lead to one week and so on. before you realize it you will be smiling thinking of his antics. Each will heal in their own time.

Below is a poem I wrote after the loss of one of my furkids. I hope it will give a bit of comfort to those who need it. Writing it helped me heal.

The Angels Are Among Us

The Angels are among us,
swirling gently round our feet
Sparkling eyes shine just like stars,
coats soft, they smell so sweet.
Like new mown hay in summer dew
or leaves burning in the fall
A fragrance triggers memories;
but I stop before I call.
The one I'd call has gone away
to the Rainbow Bridge named place
I'd forgotten in my heart of hearts
I can no longer kiss her face.
Heart in tatters, I break down,
face buried in my hands
And sob for those who've gone ahead
into that Rainbow Land.
But while I sit in misery
a warmth wraps all around
My inner being and warms my heart
as I sit on the cold ground.
Feather soft breeze brushes by,
caressing cheek and skin
Tears are gone - I feel at peace,
sadness gone upon the wind.
See, we are never left alone,
though times it feels that way
The misty shadows once known to us
keep all dark things at bay.
Guarding those they've left behind
though they're no longer seen
Is a job they do with love and care -
away, they've never been.
Walking with our every step,
with us all throughout the night
Our little angel guardians
hold us always in their sight.
So if you're lost and feel alone,
you just can't keep the pace
With problems in your home or job:
Just think about their face
Then raise your head and whistle out
into the sky and bide
Your special Angel will be right there,
forever by your side.

Alex, I'm sure we all appreciate Gary Stevens very well written letter. I hope something comes from it at the LA Times.

FOBs, please be careful when reading articles about Barbaro. Just today I've been able to read some of them, and I've come across some really awful stuff out there. People who can write that kind of trash seem to be lacking some vital part of being human. I'm reminded of the sentence at the end of the wonderful video Debra Lopez from Wisconsin submitted to this site just after Barbaro's Preakness injury:

"If you have never loved an animal, your soul remains unawakened."

Maybe that's what is lacking in some people who can be so cold and cruel to those who loved this magnificent horse. I feel sorry for them. From now on, I'll only read articles that Alex provides links to here. Thank you again, Alex.

Good Evening FOBs:

Good Evening Alex:

My post this evening is in response to Gary Stevens. I have followed Gary for years now. I would like to say that I have had a deep respect for the man as a world class athlete, as a father, and as a devoted husband.

Right before he retired, he was racing in Europe. I do not remember all the details, but he refused to race because his mount seemed to be bleeding from his nose. All He_____ broke loose, and he was going to be forced to cease riding pending an investigation. What moved and impressed me about this man, is he was completely willing to face suspension because he made a decision that was best for the horse. It was not the popular decision, rather the safe decision for the horse. He was willing to face heavy fines and suspension, to save the horse.
Now, the LA Times author spews out foolishness and Gary steps up to the plate and again follows his conscience.
I applaud and respect him even more for supporting Barbaro, the Jackson's, Michael, and most of all us, FANS OF BARBARO!!!!

He is a wonderful example of what is good in the sport of thoroughbred horse racing and what is humane. He is a tremendous asset to the sport and has shown deep compassion for everyone who has loved Barbaro so very much.

Gary wherever you are, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your fortitude and compassion!!
Thank You!!

I will continue to be inspired by the effect Barbaro and his connections have played in so many lives.

God Bless You Sweet Barbaro,

Debber

Hello. This is my first entry. I have visited the site almost daily but usually linked to gratefulness.com to light candles for Barbaro, Pine and Foggy after reading the daily announcement regarding Barbaro's condition. I visited the hospital message board daily to send a message or to read others messages as it helped me feel connected to Barbaro and not so alone in my feelings toward him. While many family and friends were concerned about Barbaro, they could not relate to my "extreme" devotion to him. (Sound familiar?) On Monday while at work I was thinking about Barbaro almost constantly and was dreading checking on him when I got home due to the discouraging updates over the weekend. A co-worker had gone home to have the cable connected in her new apartment and when she returned she came to my desk and said "Elisabeth, I'm sorry about Barbaro". I knew immediately what she meant by that and promptly burst into tears which continued for the rest of the work day. I received some curious looks and several hugs. I have had a Barbaro screensaver at work and everyone knew I was enamored of him. The same co-worker had bought me a Barbaro beanie for Christmas and he sat at my desk, too. I cried so hard during the hour ride home that I feared I might veer off the road due to poor visibility. On Monday and Tuesday nights I awoke in the middle of the night and lay there for what seemed many hours and did not cry but tried to process what had happened and pray for Barbaro. My emotions have run the gamut from moment to moment and day to day as have yours. I have been reading your messages since Monday feeling the need to have some connection with those who feel the way I do about Barbaro. Everyone I know is sad about what happened, but I know that I cannot pour out my heart to them as they cannot grasp the magnitude of the grief I am experiencing. So when I read from several people that they had come here often and were posting a message for the first time, I decided that when the time was right I would do so as well. Thankfully today there were a few less physical tears which is a relief because my eyelids appear to be permanently swollen and my sinuses congested. The reason I feel good about communicating today is that last night, inspired by many of you and your calls to take action, I emailed everyone I know to ask (again) that they PLEASE consider signing the anti-slaughter and synthetic track petitions in Barbaro's memory. This morning I brought a donation of tack and other riding equipment that has been sitting around since my daughter stopped riding a few years ago to our local H.O.R.S.E. for their sale tomorrow. My daughters and I are going to stop there tomorrow and decide which horse in their care we will sponsor. When I saw the horses today I coulnd't help thinking that Barbaro lived in them. This weekend I also plan to spend some time putting together my Barbaro memory album with all of the stacks of articles, photos and updates I have been collecting since Day 1. I think it will be very therapeutic and terribly heartwrenching at the same time. Every year I have a Kentucky Derby party but due to my schedule had a Preakness party instead this year...I taped the entire coverage of the day from ESPN to NBC. I am not sure I will ever view it, but I neither am I able to destroy it. Thank you for giving me a forum to recount my story. I feel honored to be among you. A blessed night to all!

Going back in time....I found this article just after Barbaro won the Derby. It's really very, very nice and it illustrates how Mrs. Jackson was really connected with Barbaro from the beginning. Also, rumors that they turned down offers as high as $5 million dollars to buy him.

The pantherman and I thank you. He got a not-good report at the vet yesterday but he's hanging in there. I regret to say I have not lit any candles, even for my own baby, since this past Sunday...Felix still needs them, as do all our candle subjects....

The Jacksons both graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. Gretchen Jackson (class of '59) also earned a master's degree in pastoral counseling from Neumann College. Roy (class of '61) was a three-sport star athlete whose UPenn career was cut short after his sophomore year because of a heart condition. Dear Barbaro,
##### :)

My 4 yr. old daughter just asked me if it was YOU who was making the snow that is falling from the sky right now.

I said Yes, and God is helping Barbaro get well tonight up in heaven.

Christine smiled and asked me to tuck her in and remind God to make sure Barbaro has his blanket to sleep with tonight because it's cold outside.

Christine said her prayers with daddy, I turned off the light and said goodnite.....as I closed the door to her room, she said, "Goodnite Barbaro, I love you".

Shedding a heartfelt tear.....me too.

Thank you, Sarah. I'm going to go light some candles in a minute. For some reason, I haven't been able to face them...

Bobby, my sweet Velvet Nose, time to bid you goodnight. Today has been rough again and I'm still having anger with a world that wouldn't let you beat this. Or the forces of nature, I guess, that designed you to be so beautiful and strong yet fragile.

We will keep doing our part to help your beloved Dr. Dean and others find preventions and cures for laminitis.

As for you--flare those nostrils, give a mighty snort, shake the ground with your hooves, and go punch a hole in the wind.

I love you.

Alex,

Thanks, once again, for your dedication to this site, to horses and horse racing, and all of us! Please tell Gary Stevens we send a huge Thank You for his letter - hope it makes Page 1!!!

Unfortunately, there will always be people who, for whatever reason, don't like or understand animals. More is the pity for them. At this stage for me, all I can do is try to make them understand, or at least have some respect for my views. Beyond that, I will continue with the gift that God gave me - a love and understanding of animals and a drive to help them. It is my passion; always has been. And, life without passion is meaningless!

Barbaro has woken a passion in many - and he re-lit the fire in what is important to me. That fire will get a lot more accomplished than all these goofy, lost people who mock and insult Barbaro and what we're doing. As much as I've wanted to respond to the ones who have invaded this site, I have chosen to channel my energies elsewhere because these people aren't worth it. EACH OF US HERE - our time is worth so much more!

Hang in there, everyone! We've got one hell of a Guardian Angel looking out for us now!!!! Big B. is hauling butt, leaving a trail in the clouds!!

OK, climbing down off the soapbox now.

Hope everyone has a good weekend! you all are so very special!!

Hoping everyone who was "Hands On" with Big B. are breathing a bit easier and doing OK. We're all with you in heart and spirit!

Love to all,

Ga. Crash Victim Says Dog Saved Her Life

By ELLIOTT MINOR
Associated Press Writer

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- A south Georgia woman bloodied in a car wreck says she owes her life to a German shepherd who -- thankfully -- just wouldn't stay in his yard.Advertisement

Shannon Lorio says that after her car careened down an embankment, the wayward dog found her bruised and battered on the vehicle's trunk, pulled her by her shirt collar, dragged her about 50 yards through briars to a highway and let her lean against him so she could flag a passing motorist.

His new name: Hero.

"That dog is always going to have a special place in my heart," Lorio said Friday. "He's my hero."

Hero's previous owners have signed him over to the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society since the Jan. 26 accident because he kept wandering off.

He won't be in the shelter long: Not only have at least 50 people offered to adopt him, a dog trainer has agreed to see if he has the right stuff for search and rescue work.

Lorio's car tumbled backward down an embankment in a remote, heavily wooded area. She said she lost control on a curve and was thrown onto the trunk.

"I was bleeding from my face and my nose," she said. "All of a sudden, I felt a presence -- a really huge presence. He was straddling me. I have watched too many horror movies about werewolves and vampires. I thought he was going to eat me."

Instead, the dog licked her face, she said.

The 2-year-old dog, weighing 70 pounds, dragged the 136-pound Lorio to the highway, then stood by to help her summon help before she collapsed, she said.

Lorio, 36, of Pavo, said she can't adopt Hero because she already has six dogs, but she's showered him with gifts including a huge bone and a stuffed animal.

"If he ever needs anything, I'll be there," she said.

Dog trainer Heidy Drawdy, of Thomasville, will take Hero next week to see if he's cut out to be a search and rescue dog.

First item on the agenda for the wandering canine: obedience training.

I thought everyone would love this sweet poem on our BARBARO.
We printed it out and have it up at home!

The world is colder today.
The sun is not as bright.
We have lost our star, our light, our hope.
Barbaro is gone.

Do not despair.
Remember his golden light.
The hope, the determination, the courage.
Know that goodness and miracles followed
Wherever he passed.
He did not pass us by.

Remember now the good times.
The blazing speed,
The glorious shine of his eye,
The look that promised tomorrow.

Then look to the sky on a brilliant sunshine day.
You will see him
Running fast and free
Daring the clouds and stars with his speed.
Daring the sun and wind with his heart.

Know that he was a miracle
A bright and shining beacon of hope
The confirmation that all things are possible.
There will be a better tomorrow
For Barbaro, for humanity, for all things beautiful.

He made it happen,
He brought us together.
He was Barbaro.
The spirit of Barbaro will never be lost.

To Jo in Chantilly, I'm in Sterling, VA. Maybe we can meet up!!

Thanks you guys for your support. I stay so busy between the ranch and school that I haven't had time to post as much as I would.

One thing, if you don't know much about Horse Slaughtering, please read about it, educate yourself, tell your friends. We know as peoples emotions subside after a week like we have had, they tend to forget, but we can't forget, we need to educate those who don't know. There are so many educational sites, one that I visited tonight www.justsaywhoa.org/index.asp

I don't know anyone having to do with this site, but it is very forthright in how it handles the slaughtering of horses. Definately educational, sometimes graphic, if you choose to look at that, but it is imformative and gives ideas on ways to help. There are others too.

I would just want to remind everyone that no matter what, we must represent the spirit of horsemanship with integrity. Stay proud, yet humble. We will win!

Have a good evening...bed time for this ole gal!

As always, I believe God loved Barbaro enough to give him to the Jacksons and then the Jacksons loved Barbaro enough to give him back to God.

Good night, my frineds.

Okay - some one ask for signs - here's one. One of my horses used his big prehensile lip to unlatch his stall, went over to the giant jar of peppermints and removed the lid and wiggled out about a pound - ate them wrapper and all. And...not only was he not sorry...he swore Barbaro made him do it. LOL - what are you going to do (get a better latch). If you listen carefully you can hear him laughing!!!!!

It was great to laugh here today. Thanks to all who added ingredients to the Troll soup. Seems that people are starting to heal. Blankets all around - it is SO cold tonight! It is so nice to be part of the Barbaro Nation - always a warm place.

###
Ken Z. - your little one sounds wonderful.

Chris B - Glad you are feeling better.

A toast to Gary Stevens - well done.

A toast - to all the Barbaro connections - for doing all the right things for all the right reasons.

Alex, Alex, Alex...How can we ever thank you enough for continuing to help us through this time, this past year! You better continue working out so that your head can hold your crown with all its stars that I know is waiting for you in the far distant future! I have enjoyed all the links to the articles, but I want to comment on the one from ESPN's Bill Finley. He said that we have all fallen in love with Barbaro mainly because he is a horse. "We only seemed to care more about Barbaro than any other horse or horses because his story got told. Had a $5,000 claimer suffered the same catastrophic injury that day, had he been owned by terrific people who cared about his well-being and had he gone through an eight-month battle for survival, no one would have ever known about it. I can't imagine, though, that people would have cared any less had that story been splashed all over the sports pages for eight months. Call me naive, but I truly believe that." He is so right about that, but he needs to look closer at this site and the discussion boards to see how much time, energy and money that FOBs have contributed for the purchase of horses in feedlots across this nation, to the rescue group in Missouri for the care and purchase of the survivors of the semi-truck accident in September, to research sites for horse and other animal health issues, to mail, fax, and email members of Congress about the horse slaughter bills in the House and Senate. Even though these haven't been splashed across the nation's headlines, untold thousands of dollars have been spent on these concerns--all in the name of Barbaro. Now that our collective awareness of the issues surrounding our beloved horses have been aroused by our interest in and, yes, unexplicable love for a horse named Barbaro, let us continue to do those things that bring about good changes in this world. God bless Barbaro, all who have touched him, and all who have been touched by him.

Great new article at MSNBC. Way to long topost here . It is called, "Horse Racing Community Won't Forget Barbaro".

A few quotes from Mrs. Jackson..
“He’s been so loved by the public, we think it’s right to keep his memory alive,” co-owner Gretchen Jackson said.

“We love the thought there could be talent there,” Gretchen Jackson said. “This is something that’s promising, but my emotion is connected to Barbaro. It’s a miracle that we had a horse like Barbaro.

Also, talks about Laminitis fund at UPenn, Rood & Riddle, Anti-slaughter, new track surfaces and the Museum idea.

Hello all...

We finally had a little snow tonight here in CT, and it seems we're going into the deepfreeze. It seems fitting that the world is a little colder with our boy so far away hovering over us, racing his "frens" amidst the clouds.

I've spent hours sitting here scrolling through your posts, and missed you all day long. It's so comforting to come here and see new posters and old friends as well.

Dr. Kathy's remembrance was just gorgeous. The image of Barbaro gazing out of that window will stay with me for a long time.

Gary Stevens ROCKS. He is class all the way. I hope they fire that idiot at the paper.

I'm so surprised that there are so many people who seem to be jealous of a horse! What does that say about them...

Way back, Kathy's 12:35 pm poem was stunningly beautiful. More tears...

Nancy in CT's song is lovely as well, and I wait for the next posting from Equine Heaven! Made me smile.

AZ FOBs, what a wonderful and successful day you had. Such fabulous news going forward. We WILL get Barbaro's work accomplished on his behalf.

Anna in TX, so sorry about your daughter's dog. As someone posted, Barbaro is there to meet him and show him around. I think that's a very comforting thought for FOBs who have lost furkids recently. I mean, talk about the best of company!!

Tricia's clock on the wall, Lyn and Cheryl--all these signs. Well I can't shake the image of those fat robins on my front lawn Monday morning. When that happens, I find it very comforting because you know that some essence is there communicating with you, telling you there is more to this life than meets the rational eye.

Finally, last night (I think, I have no idea what time I'm in anymore), Renee said she thought my dream meant I should plant a tree, and Spirit Horse said she thought I was the drooping pine. I think you're both right. I have been feeling like I was "rode hard and put away wet" all week, and it's been hard to deal with the depth of these emotions. I need to go to bed now and sleep...Renee, what kind of tree should I plant? (don't tell me apple or pear, I'm not that skilled a gardener LOL)

Good night all. You are so amazing. Prayers for all.

He only likes to stick his paws in it, though, he prefers running water(like out of the faucet)I am buying water bottles w/small mouths to keep grey paws out!

Your horse's wrapper & all story is hilarious! hope no stomach ache arises...would not be so funny then. Take care. Goodnight.

ANNA-I read about you daughters dog Achilles accident. That is really awful thing to happen. I am so sorry for her. It is so to deal with this I hope she is going to be alright.

Tiger tiger in the night

Candles lit, oh what a sight

A horse, a cat, we care not how

Our love for them is bigger now

We tuck them in, we sing their song

We sing to them the whole night long

The ones who've left us shake their heads

They wonder why we cry in bed

You silly ones, they seem to say

Our lives were great, you made our day!

Now dry your eyes and come with me

I'll sing to you of mysteries:

There is a place, you know it too

It's tucked right here inside of you!

It's where you'll find me every night

Your heart, a growing beam of light

So sleep in comfort love and grace

And wake up with a smiling face

For love is good and love is right

Says tiger tiger in the night

Wishing you all a good night and a better tomorrow.

Jane- A fruit tree is not that different to plant than an ordinary tree. It just has to have more nutrients and mulch and stuff to keep moisture in(perlite, vermiculite etc) in the hole, and the hole must be a little deeper and moist at first. It also has to be kept watered more often at first. Seriously, if my sister can do it anybody can. :0)

Susan in Saratoga-why you make me cry before I go to bed?

Posted by: Dora J Crow at February 3, 2007 6:10 AM

Goodnight my Precious Barbaro. Now you are watching over us every night. Did God tell you how many prayers he listened to about you? Did you see all your candles? And the signs and posters on the fence and all the articles and pictures and videos about you? Wow, you are a really famous horse down here!
You knew all along how much we love you, didn't you? You knew what you were doing, too! Maybe we didn't think our prayers were answered, but they were because you got to stay with us for almost 9 months more to show us courage and grit and you made us smile and you taught us what we need to do next. And now you are healed!

Just one more thing, please ask God to watch over your Mom and Dad and Dr. Dean and Alex and Michael, Peter & Edgar. They are hurting now more than we are. Nighty night, Sweet Prince. I'll talk to you tomorrow in my heart and I will always love you.
An FOB FOREVER!

Hello to all.
I've been lurking since I found this site on Monay morning at work. I'm embarassed to say that it ever occurred to me to even look for a site giving daily updates for Barbaro. I have relied only on what I heard on the radio or tv.

After reading so many posts (at work...shame on me) I was so comforted by everyone's words. I was as devistated as you all have about the sad news. It has comforted me more than you know to read these posts. Few people at work seem to have been as affected as I have been.

I want to thank you all again for your wonderful words. I would also like to thank Alex, as he seems to be the one everyone is giving credit to for this site.

Like the rest of you, I send my thanks to the Jacksons and Dr. R. and all the staff at NBC for all their dedication and selfless work. Thank you all for listening.

Take care you handsome boy. May God bless you and keep you.

Too cool Susan

###Dora,
I never sleep - I run my own business so insomnia is part of the deal. Sir Lip (not his real name) is just fine although he did get in big trouble for not sharing with the other 4. Uncle Pogo had a massage today and his therapist said - best he's felt in 8 years! Maybe a little heavenly intervention?

Peach yogurt? Sounds great. Ahh...paws in your drink. Is that better than them drinking out of your drink? Not too sure on that.

Posted by: lynz at February 3, 2007 6:17 AM

Saratoga Susan-
I am sure you have seen me write about Boo & Sweetness. I think of them everynight when I go to bed. They always slept on me, since they were itty bitty 1 pounders. It is still hard to get used to them not being there anymore. It was 2001 for her, 2003 for him, but still am unused to not sleeping with a cat. (My Grayson, Ki-Ki, and lil Buddy live in the country at boyfriend's house, along w/my dogs) No more pets here the dad said! Your poem made me think of them, it is really sweet. I love it, Susan will also, I am sure. Thanks!

Yogurt, pudding cups, M&M s and porkrinds(boyfriend gives him!) My grey tuxedo bratcat is quite the enigma. He will even reach for black coffee, as your horse does tea. I shudder to think if it is hot, I do not drink coffee, and hope that the boyfiend (LOL) makes sure its not hot!

We are starting to laugh more. There has been unknown and uncertainty here for months - now we know...doesn't make it easy but it does help us to heal. Barbaro is free!

My personal soap box: You also need to know that some folks who lurk may say unkind things. If they do - do not respond. See posts in update 196 around 7:40 - 8:40 pm. for ideas.

Also, the people here are amazing. They have raised lots and lots of money for laminitis research as well as putting and keeping several critical issues in the news (better tracks, ending horse slaughter, etc.)

So welcome.

I do not think Dr. Richardson has made a posting as of yet. Only Dr. Anderson, Jeannine Edwards, have so far.

###Dora, As a equine surgeon friend of mine would say "that cat ain't right!" Funny, but not quite right! Me...I'd go with "he's a little touched."

Sounds like Grayson and my Ridgeback puppy Zamu would have a blast. Keep away is his favorite. Ice cream on his ears. (although tonight as he played keep away with the stolen tube of bute for Ms. Lu - I was somewhat less than amused.)

Pogo loves black coffee too! It has to be REALLY hot - and he only drinks it from his surgeon's cup. Come to think of it - he is the only horse the surgeon lets drink from his cup!

Dora:

Thank you for responding.

I did not think he had, but a few postings back was the comment that perhaps he had.

Take care,

Debber

Such fine posts, a letter from Dr. Anderson and a ripping response from Gary Stevens to the L.A. Times - good soul food, and therapeutic... and Sheriff Joe - what a coup! It's funny how I assumed in the past that people in such influential places already knew the facts about horse slaughter! Good on the AZ FOB's...

Oh yeah I forgot to tell the AZ FOBS what a terrific job!! Pats on the back big time for your guys/gals accomplishments today. You did a great thing contacting Sheriff Joe (hope I got name correct) My daddy is named Joe, guy at TB friends is Joe, some guys here named Joe. It is a good name for animal rights protectors.

Lynz-
My sis used to have a Ridgeback. Got him from pound in Memphis, huge giant, but sweet scared meekhearted thing. She loved that dog, had to give him away when they moved to smaller place. He was so scared of her black oriental shorthair (well I was too) he was the only cat that could scare the beejesus outta ya. His teeth hung out like a vampires. His name was Sylvester, Ugh, meanie..
Well, thats about it for me. I stayed up too late last night too, got up too early this a.m. seeya tomorrow. sweet dreams. kiss POGO for me, I would like to see a picture of him sometime.

Lynz -- Heavenly intervention is the word of the week... paws in drink? ... better than their whole face?

Good night Barbaro Nation. Wherever you may be I hope you are safe and warm.

May the spirit of all the four legged creatures that have touched all of our lives watch over us.

Thank you Alex

I have a little concern and I want to tell all of you about it.

I know over time it will get easier, but I am a bit concerned for Dr. Richardson. I am a nurse, and I have watched him very closely since this began. Perhaps it is my many years of being around the emotional aspect of someone's passing. We do learn over time to cope more efficiently.

Interesting that the movie "Steel Magnolias" was airing this evening. Although men are geared differently than women, they too feel deeply. Again, I know over time he will be ok, but I just wanted to say this. I have so much respect for him. I only wish medical doctors for we humans were more like him.

Thanks for your understanding.
