    Barbaro Updates: 205

    updates are now here.

    Update 1480: From Upenn:

Roy and Gretchen Jackson Endow Chair for Equine Disease Research at Penn Veterinary Medicine School

    Feb. 13, 2007

A $3-million gift from Roy and Gretchen Jackson, owners of Barbaro, will endow a chair in the name of Dean W. Richardson at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

In acknowledging the gift, Penn President Amy Gutmann said, "Gretchen and Roy Jackson have already done so much for veterinary medicine through their commitment to giving Barbaro every possible opportunity to recover from his catastrophic injuries. People throughout the world now understand that veterinary medicine --- and Penn veterinary medicine in particular --- shares in the advances that define today's biomedical science. Now, with this generous gift, Gretchen and Roy Jackson not only promote continued progress, but they pay tribute to the doctor who, like them, gave his heart to a magnificent horse."

"This endowed chair," said Joan C. Hendricks, the Gilbert S. Kahn Dean of Veterinary Medicine, "is a strong recognition of the power of translating fundamental scientific advances into new real-world treatments. With a new faculty position dedicated to the study of equine disease, we will be better positioned to fight deadly conditions like laminitis."

The endowed chair is the cornerstone of a major new Penn Vet initiative to fight laminitis, which afflicted Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. Laminitis is a severe, painful condition in horses that can be fatal. The laminitis initiative will foster training programs and studies for new treatments of equine diseases.

"We are very pleased to make this commitment in support of the School of Veterinary Medicine's research of equine diseases," Gretchen Jackson said. "Our close relationship with Dr. Richardson over the last eight months persuaded us to name the chair in his honor. We are indeed grateful to him, and we especially look forward to a future without laminitis."

Roy and Gretchen Jackson have a long and close connection with Penn and the School of Veterinary Medicine. Both are Penn graduates, and they have been dedicated supporters of Penn's athletic, medicine and veterinary programs for many years. In addition, Gretchen Jackson serves on the Penn Vet Board of Overseers.

"I am deeply honored by this generous and important gift," said Richardson, chief of surgery at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital and leader of the team that treated Barbaro. "The Jacksons' remarkable philanthropy will translate into better outcomes for injured and ill horses in the future."

The Penn School of Veterinary Medicine is a leader in the development of new treatments and technologies to improve the health and care of both companion and large animals and is at the forefront of training students and veterinarians in diagnosing, preventing and curing animal diseases.

Update 1479: Horseracing lost a wonderful person yesterday: Trudy McCaffery, 62; horse breeder and owner worked to improve racing. Trudy McCaffery was also breeder of Round Pond.

Update 1478: It seemed relatively warm this morning first thing (low thirties I guess) but then a "wintry mix" descended upon us and made riding a cold task. First set was Hawty Creek, the weather was still decent and we did three laps of the Tapeta track. She basically ended up galloping about a mile and a half. She went well, but got a little steemed up coming home as the horsepath was pretty busy with horses by that time. I will likely start getting on her a little earlier over the next few days. I rode three for Tim, Chesapeake City Slew, Grandma and Medi Man. Each went well as the weather got progressively worse. The "moister" was horizontal and a mix of snow and sleet I guess. OK when it was on your back, but when coming right at you it was pretty miserable. My last three sets were shedrows in the barn (phew)! Anyway with the weather we are likely to have its likely the track may not be in use tomorrow. Wednesday is typically one of our gate days for gate schooling, that has already been cancelled.

I think I missed this article: Prado honors Barbaro for his 'courage, will to live', which quotes Edgar Prado, including:

"Barbaro was a very special horse, not only because he provided me with the greatest achievement in my career but also because he showed he was a horse with a lot of courage and a lot of will to live," Prado said. "He fought for eight months and nine days, but unfortunately the laminitis was just too strong."

Update 1477: Ed Fountaine writes a nice piece about NoBiz: 'BIZ' IS THE BUZZ. The following is an excerpt:

Recalling the first time he saw the "Biz" as a 2-year-old in Florida, Tagg - hardly a gushing, love-struck schoolboy-type, as we learned when he trained Funny Cide to win the Derby and Preakness four years ago - said: "Before he jogged three steps, I called (owner-breeder Elizabeth Valando) and told her 'this is the most gorgeous horse I've ever seen. If he's not a Triple Crown candidate, they've never made one.' "

I remember Ed relaying this comment to me when we had dinner a month ago. The Daily Racing Form has a nice recap of the Derby situation for those who ran in the stakes last weekend: First pieces of Derby puzzle fall in place.

An FOB created scrap book for NBC is under development, if you want your name listed please add here: Names for NBC Scrapbook.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I'm happy to report that I have connected with two other FOBs here in the racing wasteland that is Maine. If there are any others lurking out there, please track down my post on the DB titled "MAINE FOBs CHECK IN HERE". I took it upon myself to organize a state-based group and would like to see more organization at the state level.

Laurie H. - Last night's tuck in was very poignant. A room with a spectacular view!

    ##
Shelley in CA - I can picture your husband, Bogart and Barbaro sitting around up there and they're all talking about how wonderful you are!

Morning Barbaro, miss you greatly but am continuing your work by fighting to end horse slaughter. Got a letter from my representative yesterday. The letter was not so negative as in the past. He is listed on the Compassion Index as supporting the bills to end horse slaughter as are my two senators. Am encouraged at this. Will continue on in your honor.

Hiya, FsOB! I need to head off to Little Rhody soon to get a lot done at work today. Tomorrow's weather sounds iff-y for southern New England. My letters to Congressman Joe Courtney will go in the mail today.
To Marg in Maine: If you don't get a lot of response to your proposal, might you consider a "FsOB of New England" instead? Just a thought...
If there's anyone in CT who may not be able to travel to Delaware Park on 04/29 but would like to meet here, please let me know. Peace, RMH

Good Tuesday Morning Alex, Barbaro in heaven and all members of the Barbaro family,

I'm still in denial I guess - just wishing that I'd wake up and find that the euthenasia report was a nightmare or someone was playing a trick on us (sick trick, right?). Sooner or later acceptance will come. But in the meantime I'm still resolved to fight on to close the slaughterhouses, rescue horses and improve life for all horses.

Shelley A - my prayers for a safe run for our nephew Mr. Boxcar.

To all FsOB in the bad weather areas - take extra care today.

Try to have a peaceful day all!

Hi FOB's...I've never posted here before, but I read what you guys have said these last few months...Barbaro's spirit has given me courage to face lots of things lately...I had to put down my 3 yr. old filly this past November...I cried for weeks for her & I still cry when I come here...
But it's a good cry, I'm definately not alone in my sadness at the passing of this wonderful animal...Thanks for all you folks, you are truly an inspiration...I know God will ask Barbaro to give us all a ride around those green pastures in heaven when we get there...God Bless Barbaro, the Jacksons, his "posse", all who worked so hard to save him at NBC, & all the FOB's

Its snowing lightly here in Chester County and I'm prepping to go into Philly to the Tut exhibit. I'm looking forward to a couple of days of down time to just clean out a lot of old stuff, get organized and catch up on correspondence.

got a copy of the pic of Barbaro and Messaging (Bloodhorse). Its so beautiful. Makes me feel hope for Spring coming.

Harriette, good to see you back.

Alex, take care at Fair Hill...give all the horses hugs for me.

Robyn Hoffmann (12:22 PM) - I might consider that but we are so isolated up here in Maine that it just takes too darn much time to travel "down South". It sounds as it you have a pretty sizable number of FsOB in CT and I think there are a few in MA. I will keep the suggestion in mind, but for now I'm just concentrating on my own state. I'm not a great organizer of people so I want to start small!

    Good Morning FOB's

People have been asking why the co-sponsor list hasn't been increasing in regard to HR503 when they are being told by some of the reps that they are going to cosponsor.

The question many are asking is "Should they continue to call these Reps that haven't been added to the list and have said that they will be cosponsoring???
Although it should only take 24 to 48 hours for new cosponsors to show up on the co-sponsor list, it may take more time. Urge them to check the list in 10 days or so and if their Rep isn't listed yet, they should call that Rep again and urge them to cosponsor. Please ask everyone to try and speak with the staffer who takes care of the animal welfare bills as they will put more attention on these issues. The aide has a TREMENDOUS amount of influence on the final decision of your representative or senator.

In the meantime, it is VERY important to keep calling committee members. They are the ones that will get it to the floor for a vote.

So, bottom line is.....keep calling your representatives (HR503), senators (S311) and committee members.

    Hopefully, links will follow shortly.

    Have a great day!!

Good Morning Alex, FOB & of course, our sweet hero & inspiration, Barbaro.

Alex, I do so enjoy hearing about your mornings. There is something so positive & encouraging in your descriptions of your daily happenings. As much as we all miss & mourn the loss of Barbaro; life does go on.

Harriette, if you posted late yesterday, I missed it. But I am so glad to see you back with us. You are in my prayers. The prayers for all to find the peace Barbaro has found.

FOB, someone on the chat board had mentioned sending post cards. What a great idea! I have purchsed 25 pre-stamped & am beginning with all the senators & members of the house (irregardless of the state they are in) to ask them, in memory of Barbaro, to support the anti-slaughter bills.

How proud I am of everyone who helped save the foals. I am sending a small contribution. I wish I could do more, but every little bit will help. Together, through our good works, we will keep Barbaro's name alive.

My thoughts often go to the Jackson's, Dr. Richardson & his entire staff; those who were involved with Barbaro daily. This time of transition must be most difficult for them.

Peace be with all of us. To our angel, Barbaro, I hope we are making you proud.

Carol, I guess will depend on the track of this storm if you will get this stuff or not, winds have really picked up here in the last hour.
Sheriff dept has ordered all vehicles off the road except for emergency vehicles. Saying if you go out and get stranded, they can not guarentee help coming as there are just too many roads that are impassible now.

I have been working to keep the snow from piling up against my patio door off the deck, just don't want it to build up and break the glass, that will make it really cold in here!!

I guess it is too late to get out of "dodge" now!!!

We had that snow here in Kansas last night. A whopping 5-7 inches. So, they closed all schools BEFORE the snow even came, everyone is taking a vacation day (husband included) and they are warning not to go out.
Being from PA, this is just a dusting to me. :)Though I was annoyed when my phone, computer, and DirecTV went down last night while Tivoing the Westminster show. But it is pretty outside, and sure beats that depressing rain we had yesterday.

##Nina, Ha, I tricked them last night, I only put part of my supply in the cupboards and hid the other so we'll have some for tonight when the snow comes. They were very good, no mess. What's happened to your lighter?

##Laurie H. A room with a view, treats and a warm blanket, what more could one want. He's our very special boy. Thank you again for tucking him in.

Have a safe day everyone and be careful to all those in the storm's path.

Cal I am in Western Ohio.. (mid ohio/westen)..

How is the weather up your way?? the storm is tracking North to North east, the WORST is not here yet!! We are now having THUNDER Snow!! Really weird to here thunder and snowing!! My dog is freaking out!!

Was a major accident in my county, 2 semis have jack-knifed and emergency crews are having a rough time getting to the scene, they have called out snow plows to help get them there..

Hi all from Cancun, vacation filled with much sadness. I was on the beach last night thinking of our boy and watching the stars. Glad to see you all are still here. God Bless Edgar Prado, I never realized his mother had died just a year ago. Two tremendous burdens for him to carry. Take care all.

Cal I understand about getting to old for this stuff!! I have to be so careful what I do because of my shoulder (had rotator cuff surgery in Sept) and my back and hip. But I am the only one in the house who can do this (keep the snow off the doors!) Hoping my neighbor helps out if it gets too bad.

My son is stuck at work and can not get home, daughter stayed home from College (OSU) and has a SUV if I need anything.. I just worry more for my mom if we lose power as she has some major health problems (COPD, Bronchitis, High BP).. Police brought her one medicine for her in case we can not get out by Friday. but if we lose power, she can not use her nebulizer, but we do have some inhalers that she can use..

Had to go to the basement and repair a basement window that cracked because of the snow piling up!! not broke but cracked. good ole Duct tape comes in handy. think I will venture out and try to remove some of the snow from the windows there..

    FUN FUN (NOT!!)

Was up at Aqueduct this weekend and was able to watch Edgar Prado RIDE - amazing. The Whirlaway proved Summer Doldrums talent. Wanted to meet Edgar, but was busy in the barn with dozens of horses all over the place!

Talked to the Company Commander about video taping the unit singing the Barbaro cadence song. Oh my - he was pretty hard on not allowing me to do it - saying he does not not want the troops in any media attention and showing training in any way. I was a bit set back by this as I did not think much harm would be done. I understand, but I am not going to give up! I will keep trying to convincne him it is for a great cause.

    Fondmort Continues To Progress
    Sun 12 Nov, 12:22 AM

Nicky Henderson issued his most positive bulletin on Fondmort since the popular chaser suffered a dreadful injury earlier this week.

The 10-year-old sustained a broken pelvis in a gallops accident on Tuesday.

It was later discovered he was also suffering from internal bleeding.

But after undergoing treatment at the RVG Valley Equine Hospital in Lambourn, Fondmort now appears to be showing steady signs of a recovery.

"There's been a really good turnaround and he was really bright this morning," Henderson said.

"He has been given the best care and attention, and is still on 24-hour watch, but they've done a fantastic job with him.

"It's still fingers crossed, but there's been a major improvement," the Seven Barrows handler told Racing UK.

Sorry if this was already posted.

    Light candles at "FondM."

    Thanks!

Weather here is cold & windy with a fine snow. Mostly blowing, not much accumulation yet. If you all would put up a BIG snow fence in your neck of the woods to keep it from coming here, I would greatly appreciate it. I would owe you big time!

    ####
JOAN ROYA, I told Nina to tie the lighter to her belt loop. I don't know what else to do. Sending her lighters all the time is getting expensive. LOL

Also if anyone can help out Horse Feathers Rescue, we are trying to raise enough money for Cheri to get hay for her horses.
She got in some REALLY emaciated horses (some are BABIES) and they are eating like crazy.. One young appy foal has come down ill with a respiratory illness (NOT strangles) hay is in short supply and high demand .. She has a contact to get hay but needs to get the money to get it order before it is gone

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but we lost a wonderful person in horseracing yesterday. Trudy McCaffery, who campaigned the magnificent Free House, as well as Came Home and Bien Bien (she was the breeder of Round Pond), died of cancer yesterday at 62.

She had remarkable class. She loved Free House so much, and would do anything for her horses.

I remember when Free House won the Swaps. Another horse in the race, Hello, broke down. The cameras were on Trudy, on what should be one of the best days of her life. But Free House's triumph was instantly forgotten, and Trudy was near tears, talking about Hello and his connections.

She had a horse named Bosque Redondo, who broke down in a race. Like the Jacksons, she did everything possible to save him. It went on a long time, but eventually he succumbed. We know all too well the bad things that can happen suddenly.

Anyway, I'd like you to take a moment to remember Trudy, who will have her ashes sprinkled at Vessels Stallion Farm, where her gallant Free House rests.

I knew Trudy and this comes as quite a shock. I knew her through the folks in racing that I used to cook for. They were very good friends. I can't believe this....I had lost touch and had no idea she was even ill. Trudy was everything Jake said and more. She was full of life. Loved her Jack Russells and was one heck of a golfer. She always thought of me and brought presents back from big races. A jacket & hat from the Arlington Million, a beautiful blanket from the Breeders Cup when Came Home ran. Bosque Redondo broke down in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar which Came Home won. Trudy was all about saving Bosque. I'm just in shock...racing has lost a wonderful horse advocate.

Cathy, how wonderful that you knew her. I felt as if I knew her, just from seeing her on television. She truly was the class of any field.

How could I have forgotten it was the Pacific Classic where Bosque broke down? I remember being so happy that little Came Home was able to go the mile and a quarter - he was my Derby pick that year. I think it wasn't that much of a shock because I remember Trudy saying, "He'll be all right. We'll take care of him."

    And she did.

Of course, as we all know, even if broken bones mend, there are so many other things that can happen.

REPOST Shelley A and Debra, WI

    Shelley and Debra

    Cheers,

That was a bittersweet time for Trudy. Lane's End had purchased an interest in Came Home for big bucks and it was exciting to know he was going to stand at such a prestigious Stallion Station. Still....she was adamant about Bosque getting the best possible care. I just can't believe this. I lived at the horse farm in Rancho Santa Fe 6 mos out of the year. Trudy lived nearby and came over nearly every day. Always brought the dogs to run the farm. Hung out a lot at the farm. Sometimes kept a horse there also. She was also quite a rider in her younger days I hear. Sorry for talking about this so much....like I said.....this is a real shock. I really liked the lady and enjoyed her company.

Cathy, the best thing is to remember her. There are two good articles on her - one at Bloodhorse and one at ESPN horseracing. They said she didn't want anyone to be unhappy, but just donate to the foundations she supported - for retired horses and for safety issues on the track.

Remember how much she loved Free House? There was even talk of Free House being enamored of a certain mare, and they were always in neighboring paddocks.

A trip down memory lane for anyone who remembers Silver Charm's Triple Crown run: Free House won the Santa Anita Derby over Silver Charm, was third in the Derby, and a nostril away from winning the Preakness (he lost both to Silver Charm).

Have B. on my screen saver. He is shining in the sun, surging out of a leap, caught in mid-surge, weight fully back on his hocks, ears up, mane flying, front legs whole and ready to catch him in his next leap. He's in the porta-paddock. I love to see him like this every morning. Vibrant, shining, so young, powerful, driven, ecstatic, alive, alive, alive. I will always remember his this way.

I called all the politicos again, Clinton aid said they were getting A LOT of calling on S311. I still think Clinton ought to co-sponsor again and said so. Nice girl/woman on the phone....

Ordered a treat basket for Libby's kids up at NBC. Got Rachel on the line, it was WONDERFUL to speak with her. How they miss him. But they must keep going..busy with wretched V-Day. We talked about being so privileged to have lived in the Time of Barbaro. I offered that things will be cited that way, ie: Before Barbaro, we did things this way, AND After Barbaro, the slaughter houses were closed, etc. you get the idea. Many of us will measure the rest of the world's events, your lives, against Barbaro's life and death. Like 9/11.

Anyhow. Waaay too manic today. Hope all the FOB's are well and keeping the pressure on their legislators. That's what we pay them for: RESPONDING! ACTING! WE WILL DO ALL THESE THINGS IN BARBARO'S NAME. And if you're out there reading, Mrs. J, give Mr. J. his props too.
What a team you two make....

Cathy, they're online now. At bloodhorse.com. And also, if you go to ESPN, select horseracing - they have a horseracing page.

Also, I'm going to check out Thoroughbred Times (online). They should have something, too.

She was a very special person. Anyone could see that. And her horses were lovable, too. Free House with that bold, white-ringed eye and white vapor coat, and little Came Home - named because he was by Gone West, and they tried to sell him as a yearling, but he didn't make reserve, so he "came home". Out of Nice Assay, as I recall.

You're right about Came Home. She was so lucky the he did not sell. And there were others...you mentioned Bien Bien who had a pretty good career but there was also Bienamado (os something like that).

Good morning my sweet and brilliant Barbaro!
    Still missing you so deeply!
Can’t believe it’s been two weeks already!

Good morning Alex and Barbaro Nation!
Hope everyone is surviving the snow!
We got lucky down here in the southeast corner of Virginia-cold, but no snow (so far…holding my breath)!

    #####

Verna 1- thank you for your touching words yesterday. You spoke from my heart! It’s as if you were my spokesperson! It brought many tears. Thank you.

    ####
Did everyone see the following article from Bloodhorse.com yesterday? “Owner/Breeder McCaffery Dies; Bred, Raced Free House by David Schmitz.” I don’t know how to link (blue ink), so if someone else can, or Alex, if you have time… She was only 62, with so much more in life to accomplish! So sad.
    I didn’t know this:
"McCaffery was represented as breeder by her first Breeders’ Cup winner in 2006. Round Pond, a filly she co-bred with Toffan, won the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I) at Churchill Downs."

    Also:
"McCaffery, who loved golf and was good at it, played a big part in racing outside the owner’s box. She founded Kids to the Cup, which introduced youngsters to racing, and served on the board of directors of the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation. Named for the late Southern California trainer, the foundation raises money to help backstretch workers."
"In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation, P.O. Box 660039, Arcadia, Calif. 91066-0039."

Since Mr/Mrs Jackson wanted the racing world to be aware of the backstretch workers, this could be a good cause for all of us to donate to in honor of not only Barbaro, but also of the Jacksons.

I still think of Barbaro everyday, but now it puts a smile on my face. I know that he is happy and healthy in God's hands and running and playing hard with all of those before him.

Sweetie from Mo Humane Society has a candle page called "Sweet"...if you can please light some candles for her...

    Sweetie's update (2/8/2007)
Sweetie is available for adoption. She is trained for riding, but limps on her left fore and left rear. She had a chiropractic adjustment done and we hope with time that she will be a riding candidate. It is hard for her to trust people, but is getting better each day and she tries to do what you want her to. Her right rear heel has to be x-rayed as she is limping on it. She had some pretty deep cuts on the outside of that pastern and hoof. We are hoping it is not too serious.

Judy (Ontario CA) ... The plaque is "on hold" until I hear back from the Development people at NBC. Jane (from NBC) sent me a very nice email which I posted on the site about a week or so ago. Perhaps you missed it. Anyhow, my request has to go before several people before it can be approved. From what I understand from Jane, there are so many people wanting to honor Barbaro in so many ways that they are a little "overwhelmed." She said that any final decisions regarding memorials for Barbaro at NBC will be up to the Jackson's. I agree with her and am waiting to hear further. In the meantime, I have been making donations to the Laminitis Research Fund at NBC in my "personal" efforts to honor our Precious Barbaro. At least I feel like I am doing something to carry on his legacy.

Judy, if you ever email me and I do not respond right away, please know that it is only out of a lack of time and never a lack of interest. I am so sorry!

P.S. Can you send some of that CA sunshine here to Greater Cleveland? We could use it!

    Hi all-

Edie and I have created an anti slaughter postcard as another method of correspondence to our senators and representatives.
It is eye catching, brief, should get through security quickly, and will be inexpensive to reproduce and mail.

See the ***Anti slaughter postcard*** thread
under Anti Slaughter Issues folder on the forum. If you can't access the forum, send an email to antislaughterlobby@earthlink.net for details on how to download...

We hope you find this useful.

Daryl here is the letter I wrote to Time, and Gloria responds to me!

    Time Editors:
In response to the article by Joel Stein, dated 2/8/07.
It is unfortunate that writers no longer research all the facts of an issue. Respectfully request Time, and CNN, to allow the facts on horse slaughter be presented to your readers and viewers. You have permitted one point of view. Responsible journalism dictates you permit the other point of view. Why? 80% of Americans have no clue this atrocity is happening in the U.S.A. No one that I have talk to knew of this! And I have talked to a lot of people in the last eight months. Everyone said NO we stopped that in 1957. That is what I thought too!

On May 20, 2006 A horse name Barbaro broke his leg, and I started looking on the internet for information of his condition. And I found a site that did updates everyday. In reading this site I found out about three horse slaughter plants. And the most shocking part is that these horses have become "What's for dinner?" in France, Belgium, Italy and Japan. And this was upsetting to me.

Some information said only sick and old horses were killed, this is a lie. Do you wish to eat an old are sick cow? We eat beef, pork and chicken. No where can you sell horse meat in the USA.

Please do some research and I feel you will feel the same way as I do. As soon as a horse is born, we put halters on them, they are taught to trust us and be our companions. It is an extreme betrayal of trust that we even consider sending them to slaughter.

Now I call, fax and email my senators and House of Rep. Asking them to pass bill H.R.503 and S. 319.

You could help stop the slaughter of our American horses. You could be a voice to tell the people.

Go to the Humane Society of the United States site, view the video of the way the horses are killed. It is truly anything but humane method of euthanization.

I am truly ashamed of how our senators and House Rep's, bury there heads in the sand. And do not hear there own constituents.

    Thank you,

    A Fan of Barbaro

    Deborah Jones

    Bay Minette, Alabama

Hi All. Hi, my sweet, Barbaro. Miss you and love you big boy.

I just had to post this funny snippet from the TB Friends home page. Made me chuckle thinking about this:

Tuesday, February 13th... Last week a gelding from the race track in Sacramento came to us, and his name is Hoover. At 5:00 this morning I found Hoover inside our tiny tack room. Carrots and horse cookies scattered all over the place. Leg wraps were tossed outside. The barn radio was unplugged. A new bag of cat food is now trash. Hoover is a prankster. The snap to his stall gate was still in place, so Hoover is obviously an escape artist. Hoover has a new home in Walnut Creek and he leaves us soon. It is going to take hours to clean up his mess...

    :-)

Have a wonderful day all, and happy training to all our beloved horses in heaven.

    Hi all F.O.B.'s

I just recieved an email from "bloodhorse.com" about my book order. They are offering a commemorative magazine for Barbaro that can be order from them. I'll cut/paste the email for those interested on my next posting.

I haven't received any answer yet from Pimlico Race Course, after emailing them Sunday about PolyTrack.
(I found addresses on their web site). What a Tribute to our Champion if they could install it at least for the 2008 season.

    Stay warm, remember:

##Nina, I can't say where he is hiding his stuff, but I think it may be all gone, I'm finding pieces of paper and cores now hidden. I guess he thinks out of sight, out of mind. Ha!

There are no adequate words of appreciation for what Mr. and Mrs. Jackson have done in endowing this chair in honor of Dr. Richardson at UPenn.

Not only have they provided funding for establishment of the chair itself, but the magnitude of their donation will also make it possible for the endowed chairholder to set up a first-class research program. That is going to be the key in finding more successful treatment options--and hopefully someday a CURE--for laminitis.

And we all know this was truly a gift from the heart.

This story still continues on the roller coaster ride of emotions huh? Sometimes it just hits ya like a ton of bricks....some really bad times and some really good times.

This is one of the good times.

I just remember some reporters trying to insinuate that there was insurance money, and stud fees, and vet bills in the "millions" and it was all just rich people playing with their money. It infuriated all of us!! These are decent caring people, who pay attention to what is going on around them.

I’m sure he felt a great loss for Barbaro also. They seemed so close! When ever I see pictures of the two together, Messaging seems to have such a calming energy. He seems to keep Barbaro focused and confident. Dear Lord,

Thank you for the unselfish love Gretchen and Roy Jackson have shown for Barbaro and their gift to U Penn to further the learning and research about
    laminitis.

What I pray for now, Lord is that many young people will hear that calling to go into reseach.

Maybe someone like Dr Richardson who took a horse course as an elective class, and fell in love with all things horse.

Maybe some boy or girl sitting in a classroom right now that have been touched by Barbaro's passing and want to be the one to unlock the the answers yet to be found about the actual cause of this affliction. Not only let there be new treatments, but a cure, Lord.

We know, Lord that reseachers are special people. They work long tedious hours, thinking outside the box working from every angle. Some dedicate their whole lives to finding a solution to a problem.

I pray for those people. I pray all over the world great young scientists will be pulled into veterinary reseach so that future horses will someday not have to suffer and die from laminitis.

Thank you Lord, for Barbaro, and for hearing our prayers. Continue to hold the Jacksons and Dr Richardson in your healing.

We ask this in your precious Son's name and for
    His glory.

    Amen.......

    Everyone,

What a wonderful gesture by the Jacksons to endow a faculty chair in honor of Dr. Richardson ! They are truly special people.

The way that an endowmed chair works is that the money is invested and the earnings from the investment are used to pay the salary and benefits of the faculty member "named" to hold that chair. This way the original gift is never "spent" but is used to generate income to support the "holder" of the chair, basically forever. In some cases, if earnings from the investment exceed the amount needed for salary and benefits, the balance can be used for research purposes. This is generally a decision made by the donor and the institution. While the chair is named in honor of Dr. Richardson, he may not actually be the faculty member "named" to hold the chair.

Many of you probably know all this and I mean no disrespect, ....so why am I sharing this information??..... because UPENN will still need considerable donations to support the actual research to find a cure for laminitis. $3M is a LOT of money, and will help tremendously, but we should not become complacent. I encourage anyone who wants to help and is financially able, to continue to donate to the Laminitis Fund (or research fund of your choice) so that we may see an end to the suffering and grief caused by this disease.....every bit helps.

    Thanks for listening..... Charlie

I do not know if this gentleman favored the slaughter ban or not, but regardless, his death affects our cause one way or another.

    From CNN.com

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rep. Charles Norwood Jr., a seven-term Republican congressman from Georgia, died Tuesday after battling cancer and lung disease. He was 65.

Norwood died at his home in Augusta, Georgia, early Tuesday afternoon, his office said. The House interrupted debate on an Iraq war resolution for a moment of silence in his honor.

Norwood suffered from a chronic lung disease and later developed metastatic cancer that spread from his lung to his liver. He had declined further treatment last week and returned home to Georgia to receive hospice care.

Norwood received a lung transplant in 2004.

Last year, doctors discovered a small cancerous tumor on his nontransplanted lung. They removed the cancer with surgery but then discovered more on his liver when Norwood returned to Washington after easily winning re-election in November.

Norwood, a folksy dentist, never held public office before winning a seat in Congress in 1994.

In his State of the Union address last month, President Bush wished Norwood a speedy recovery.

    Charlie,
Thanks for the explanation on an endowed chair. I for one really didn't understand it, but knew it had to be wonderful because it honored Dr. Richardson and was given by the Jackson's. I for one will continue my donations to the Laminitis Fund and the Barbaro Fund.

    Miss you Barbaro

    Hello FsOB,
Great news regarding Dr. Richardson - congratulations to him, he certainly deserves it. The Jacksons are wonderful. God bless them, Dr. R, and, of course, Barbaro who continues to inspire us in so many ways.
I've been e-mailing my senators and congressmen as well as the house committees (cannot call/fax from my office during the day)and plan to send a load of letters to others who I cannot contact via e-mail. For those of you who can call during the day, please do so. Speaking with the aides does make a difference. Let's not let the Jacksons and Barbaro down.
Have a great afternoon everyone and those of you up north and in the mid-west, stay safe and warm. Prayers to those who need them.

Congratulations!!!!

Charlie thank you so much for explaining what the endowment means. What an amazing gift and an honor for Dr Richardson, he deserves it and more! The Jacksons have proven, though they didn't need to, that they are caring, loving, and generous people. Wow. My donations to the UPenn laminitis fund will continue every month. It's the very least I can do to make a difference.

FOB's...an earlier posting mentioned the florist near the N.B.Center and that if you wanted to send flowers or gifts they were the closest.

It gave me an idea. Why not send something to the New Bolton Center for tomorrow.

So just this afternoon I called the florist and ordered a small plant for Dr. Richardson to be delivered tomorrow. I hope it's something that will brighten his day. The card will read To: Dr. Dean Richardson, "In Memory of Barbaro" and from a FOB and my name & address.

If you're so inclined, you could call and have something sent. I asked if they had a lot of orders going out tomorrow, but the answer was a few things, but not many.

    It's Kennett Florist ph#: 610-444-6040

    Dear all FOB!

I just have to say, how happy I feel to see what the Jackson just did for all horses that have had to die due to and that suffer due to laminitis, this is just amaizing!!
The best gift that could be given to our beloved Barbaros memory!!
I had a horse suffering of this illness and do know a little bit about it, and find it wonderful that somebody do something to try to avoid this in most cases final illness. I would have done the same if I have had the money to do it, but just to know that people like the Jacksons does this helps a lot!!
Wonderful people, bless them and I am sure that Barbaro is very proud of his owners looking down from the Rainbow Bridge.

Hi everyone - it's been hard for me to post here but you all are still in my heart. I check Alex's updates each and every day and read through the posts as much as I can . . . have not abandoned you or this site . . . Barbaro was and is my lifeline.
Being with you all the last eight months was like having the comfort of an old favorite quilt, and I am still here, it just affects everyone differently.

We are getting hit with this storm as I speak, I am about one hour from NBC, Kennett Square, near York and Lancaster. The several inches of fluffy white isn't bad but it's sleeting and freezing. Please everyone be safe if you are on the road, I'm saying a prayer for all of you to be safe.

Yesterday I bought a single red rose to put by my photo of Barbaro, and today I worked on my memory album of Barbaro . . . it includes so many of the tributes from all of you through our earthly journey with Barbaro.

Today I read Alex's post that Mr. and Mrs. Jackson have endowed a Chair in Dr. Richardson's name, oh that is sooooo beautiful. I salute you Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and in Dr. Richardson's name is so perfect. I salute you, too, Dr. Richardson, always.
Some of my favorite photos in the album I've created are of Dr. Richardson and Barbaro.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, now and forever. I know you are running free with the angels though honey, I love you so much!

So holding hands and paws with all of you tonight, I'm with you . . . it's just the words have been difficult to get out.

    Hugs and prayers,
    FOB forever,

The Jacksons have provided a rainbow amidst the dark clouds of grief for Barbaro! May Dr. Richardson, NBC, U Penn and all who fought for Barbaro enjoy this honor! Laminitis will have a cure! I'm sure Dr. Richardson feels very sad, but he was remarkable through it all. And now he can keep searching for the cure for laminitis... I believe this is a part of his destiny.

    God bless them all...

    Hi, FOB's!

    ###
Well it is snowing here in Chester County. Had a great time with King Tut today...

I am stunned by the Jackson's continued generosity and desire to give back. They are truly incredible people and I pray I can emulate their example of compassion and action. I know someday there is going to be a vet (or more than one) who will have been inspired by Barbaro and the Jacksons who will find the cure for laminitis. If this is the cornerstone for laminitis research my question is this:

What else are they going to do/create/establish? No matter what, it is going to be awesome.

Alex, any word on how Messaging is?

    ###
Shelley, congratulations to Mr. Boxcar's impressive and safe race today. Please give him a hug from me.

    ###
Am going to call it an early night and just settle in and let the snowstorm do what it will. I have food for me, the cats, lots of chocolate mint frozen yogurt and I don't have to go anywhere tomorrow or Thursday. Will re-write my fax letters and get them out tomorrow and kick my contribution to the anti-slaughter campaign up a notch.

Steve Rei, prayers to you and BDude and BDudette. We're here for all of you. Prayers to all those with furbabies who are not feeling well.

Barbaro, prayers to you and the other animal angels as well. You are moving things from where you are so more animals can be healed. What a beauitful legacy.

    Healing, Love, Peace,

    Steve,

One of our kitties we found in a dumpster and we feared she was dead. She had a very bad head injury (just a tiny little thing at the time) and wasn't expected to make it. We had to keep her in a very small cage because she could only LEAN on the sides, and if she stood up, she went in circles. So we tried to prop her up. It was so sad.

But we and she persevered and she grew stronger and stronger. Months afterword, she still could not walk down the hallway straight. Eventually, she learned how to walk in a straight line, but to this day (eight years later) she still has a head tilt. She jumps up on the table in an arc, because she still can't jump straight.

My best to you and Bdude. we love you both, as well as Bdudette. I will pray and light some more candles.

I just wanted to share the following email which I received from Senator Clinton today:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act .

As you may know, in 2005 I voted with 69 of my colleagues in favor of an amendment to the Fiscal Year 06 Agriculture Appropriations bill that prohibited the use of federal funds to support horse slaughter under the Federal Meat Inspection Act . This amendment was signed into law in November of 2005.

In 2006, I am working to pass a broader ban on the slaughter of horses. On September 7 th , 2006, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 503 , American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, by a vote of 263-146. I am a cosponsor of the Senate version of this bill, which is now on the calendar awaiting action by the full Senate. I recently joined a number of my Senate colleagues in signing a letter to the Senate leadership requesting this legislation be moved to the Senate floor for a vote without delay to put an end to the practice of slaughtering American horses for human consumption overseas. I believe it is vital that this bipartisan, common sense legislation be enacted as soon as possible.

Thank you again for sharing your concerns with me . Please check my website at http://clinton.senate.gov or updates on this and other issues being discussed before the United States Senate .

    Sincerely,

    Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

Lynne Brown Yes I did see your response, thank you, but didn't see PK's about why mares and fillies are called "distaffs". I DID read somewhere, forget where at this moment, though, that the term "distaff" has several meanings, one of which "any group of females". Strange, no? If you wouldn't mind reposting PK's findings, I'd appreciate it! Thank you!

Thanks for your kind comments about my posts to bArbaro. At some point, I may post more, and hope that you and everyone else hear bArbaro in quiet moments, at times when you need comfort or inspiration, and at times when we may forget how precious life is and how it can be taken away so quickly.

Everytime I look at photographs of him, I look at those incredible eyes and am in total wonder at how those eyes communicated. We can't "hear" him now, of course, but those eyes spoke volumes meant to go to our hearts.

bArbaro, it's still "today" in hevvin, and to you, it's always "today", so when we see you again, it will be as though you never left us. Did you and Felix run around all silly again today? Did you touch nodes with Bilbo Bunny? Did Opie try to boss everyone around? She probably wouldn't "boss" you because you are Boss Horse. Do you all laugh at Opie's baby sister DixieMinPinhonorarykiddeninnasoot? She really is a little comedienne.

Your mom and dad gave such an incredible gift today, sort of a Valentine's Day present maybe? It sure did show their love for you. Happy Valentine's Day, Precious Boy. We'll all have you in our hearts forever.

Miss you. Love you soooooooooooooooooooo much

I've been sitting at my desk struggling with trying to put together a good - not canned - letter to send to our "esteemed" legislators against horse slaughter, and trying to figure out how many people to send it to, when I saw the news on the Jackson's endowment.

Wow. What incredible people they prove themselves to be over and over. What a shining example.

So hope it helps Dr. Richardson get through this - I am afraid he is not doing so well, missing B.

Alex - I love to vicariously live your morning experiences with your horses. Not being a good morning person, this may be the reason I've never had a horse myself.

But I have a question about gate training. When you are training a young horse, I guess it is partly just a matter of getting them used to being in and around the gate.

As far as breaking from the gate, is there a particular trigger a horse is trained to see, feel, experience, and then break? Or is it just the opening of the gate itself and then they go?

I am wondering why some horses will break through before the actual start, and what might set them off.

Thanks for the info. Thanks for this fabulous site. It's been a veritable lifeline during this heartbreaking experience.

Hiya, FsOB! Don't you sense the amazing positive energy today? What a great contribution has been made by the Jacksons - to create an endowed chair at an Ivy League institution! And by doing so to also honour Dr. Dean Richardson as well - really first-rate. But then the Jacksons seem to be incapable of anything but exemplary actions, don't they?
To Jeanine: Thank you for sharing the positive reply that you've received from Senator Clinton. Very exciting! I am crafting my letter right now to Sen. Chris Dodd, who has also announced his candidacy for the Presidency.
A hearty welcome to The Barbaro Nation for Lisa, Lynn G, & Torunn Dahl.
To Marg in Maine: I certainly understand your reasons to try to mobilize within Maine. Please keep us posted, OK?
To Joan Roya: I live just over the Gold Star Bridge from New London, CT. Do you still miss CT?
To Mary L. and to Lou Ann: Please stay safe in the snow, OK? It's not snowing here yet, but the air is very, very crisp and Ms. Nikita is excited.
To Alex: Thank you for sharing the link to the interview with Edgar Prado. I never knew of his Mother's illness and death. Her loss makes his Derby win and the subsequent passing of Bobbey just that much more poignant.
Beautifully inspiring postings from our Barbaro Nation's poet laureates, Martita G. & Harriette B.

BRAVO for the Hillary Clinton response. I think copying it and sending along to the other 2008 Presidential Candidtate hopefuls might kick more of them, who are not currently co-sponsors, into gear !

CHERYL JONES-Thank you for your response and writing a little note to bArbaro:) and best of all, including me in it! It really made me cry/smile. Today has been harder than some for some reason...thanks again, Cheryl! xxooxx

    O.K., here is PK's definition:

The term distaff is also used as an adjective and is used as a descriptor for a female grouping (e.g., the "distaff side" of a person's family refer's to the person's mother and her blood relatives). This term developed in the English speaking communities where a distaff spinning tool was used often to symbolize domestic life. The term distaff has fallen largely into disuse in recent times, although its antonyms of sword and spear to describe a male grouping is even more obscure.

One still-recognized use of the term is in horse racing, where the American Breeders Cup run by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association where fillies compete in a seperate race referred to as "The Distaff".

So the term refers to a race, not the Fillies themselves.

Now, I had to print that out, 'cause I would never had remembered it all. PK is very knowledgeable, my goodness! When I looked in FAQ's on the front page, it read: distaff is a female horse. That is where my question began in the first place. You were right though Cheryl, it is somewhat an 'antiquated' term.

Thanks again for your bArbaro post tonight, I will save it:) Sleep well, have nice dreams, maybe of our Bobby!

I have a question. Has anyone had an erroneous charge on their credit card from a school in PA? Not Univ of Penn. After contributing the $29 to the Barbaro fund, purchasing books, and Kennett Florist charge, I have a fairly large charge that I don't remember making. The phone number is for a person I don't know in PA and I was just wondering if anyone else has had a problem? Let me know if you have anything similar. I've left 3 messages for the person and they haven't called me back. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

What a generous donation by Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and an honor for Dr. Richardson. They are making Barbaro very proud for sure.

Sorry to hear about Trudy, the races between her Free House and Silver Charm were replayed all day on Sirius At the Races. I remember her face after Free House won and Hello got hurt, it was like Edgar winning on Round Pond but could not be happy because another horse was hurt. And I followed Bosque's surgery and he lived about 8 months I think before the dreaded laminitis set in. Cathy Potter - glad you got to know her.

Florida Rep. Cliff Stearns is very pro-slaughter and is on the Energy and Commerce committee so everyone can call him. I have been engaged in conversation with his aide since before the House vote last year, dealing with her was similar to Katy (Burns). He was chairman of the AG committee that tried everything to not allow HR503 to get up for a vote. His district is Ocala, Florida, self-proclaimed "Horse capital of the World." She would refer you to his website that tells all about the 100,000 unwanted horses and over-population. I have since re-educated her slowly about the myth of "unwanted" horses. Very sad for Ocala, a city whose only income and business is horses to have their rep so pro-slaughter. I hope some FOB'S can follow up with calls to his office.

Hope BDude is doing better, hang in there little one.

Mediations surgery was successful in Ocala with the help of the recovery pool. Hope for a long life for this 3 year old filly.

    Mr. and Mrs. Jackson,
Thank you for taking the reins once again to help all horses through your most generous gifting of a chair in honor of Dr. Dean Richardson to continue much-needed research in diseases such as laminitis. You are an inspiration to all who know and love horses. May you one day be rewarded with a cure for the insidious disease that took our Barbaro's life.

I occassionally purchase items from the Wireless catalog and got an email from them today advertising a framed photo of Barbaro in the Derby autographed by Edgar. Price is pretty steep--$229--so I sent them an email asking if they would consider making a donation to The Barbaro Fund or a thoroughbred rescue for each one sold. I'll let you know if I get a response!

Since Pedigree is matching any donations on their website tonight (during Westminster) to save homeless dogs, I figure THEY are worthy of my money this evening!

Have a great night FOB family--stay warm and out of the storms. . .

WOW! A Three Million Dollar Gift to UPenn to help try to find a cure for laminitis! That is absolutely fantastic! Thank you so very much Gretchen & Roy for your generous gift to help our dear horses. You are two wonderful folks.

Now it will be up to our dear Dr Dean Richardson to find the answer to why hoof laminae loses its "stickiness" and then to find a way to prevent/cure it. If anyone can do it, he can.

Barbaro is very pleased with the three of you.

I would like to second Alex's comment above about Trudy McCaffrey, ROUND POND's breeder and wonderful horsewoman who lost her life at the young age of 62 to lung cancer.

She reminds me so much of Gretchen Jackson - and a low point in her racing career was the loss of her beloved Bosque Redondo, to an eeriely similiar situation to Barbaro's.

Her daughter says, "She’s with our dad now and with Bosque Redondo,” Hoffman said. Bosque Redondo broke down in the 2002 Pacific Classic, which was won by stablemate Came Home. Surgery was performed on Bosque Redondo, but several months later he foundered and was euthanized.

In addition to the quite outstanding success their horses had on the track, she and her partners bred horses who were known to be very durable. One champion mare started 65 times and gelding Areyoutalkintome made the 42nd start of his career on January 27.

In 1999, McCaffery founded Kids to the Cup, a charitable corporation dedicated to the attraction, development, and education of young racing fans by bringing them to major events. McCaffery brought a group of Kids to the Cup members with her in ’02 when Came Home won the Santa Anita Derby and Bosque Redondo won the San Bernardino Handicap (G2) on the same card.

In 1992, McCaffery was awarded the NTRA Commissioners Cup for her contributions to the industry. In 2004, she received the Racetrack Industry Program’s Clay Puett Award, recognizing outstanding contributions in the racing industry.

"Her efforts on behalf of the industry, including her wonderful Kids to the Cup program, is equaled perhaps only by her accomplishments as an owner/breeder," said NTRA President Alex Waldrop.

In keeping with her personal philosphy, instead of flowers she requested donations in her name be made to a charity which aids backstretch workers.

I am sure her influence will be missed in the racing industry.

Barb m and cathy potter -

I see you had Trudy McCaffery honored already with your comments... I just got home and was so struck by the news. Thank you for your comments in her honor. These people, like the Jacksons, may have been overlooked in the past for their great contributions in keeping the compassion and humanitarian aspects in the forefront of racing, but I am certain it will not be the case in the future! Another Barbaro legacy...

Resting place for Barbaro's ashes still being determined

    By Sandra McKee

PHILADELPHIA // Two weeks ago, shortly after Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was cremated, owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson said they would take their time determining where Barbaro's ashes will rest.

Among the ideas they are considering is a local or regional museum honoring horses from southeastern Pennsylvania -- such as Derby winners Barbaro and Smarty Jones and Afleet Alex, who won the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes.

Charles Zacney, a partner in Cash Is King Stable, which owns Afleet Alex, said Tuesday he believes the museum will become a reality.

"I think it will happen," he said. "It is just a matter of when, a matter of taking the next step, which I think is a face-to-face meeting or a conference call among all the interested parties to discuss how to go about doing it."

Zacney said he has been contacted by an organizer about getting the project under way and added that the feedback he has heard, especially from Pennsylvania breeders, has been positive.

As for the cost, Zacney said: "I don't know, but it's an idea that can come together through fund-raising projects. It's just a matter of someone taking the forefront."

That someone, Zacney suggested, could be Gretchen Jackson.

"Mrs. Jackson would be perfect," he said. "It was more her idea, but we haven't discussed it formally. I think the Jacksons would be perfect out in front because of the recognition they've gotten from Barbaro."

The Jacksons have also been offered the options to place Barbaro's ashes at the Kentucky Horse Park and at the Kentucky Derby Museum, where four deceased champions rest.

"We haven't heard anything yet about their plans," said museum director Lynn Ashton. "The Jacksons are taking their time, and good for them. They're not rushing into anything.

"While we would be excited and look forward to having him here, we'd support any decision they'd make."

The Jacksons did not return messages Tuesday. Meanwhile, the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania announced Barbaro's owners donated $3 million to endow a chair in the name of surgeon Dean Richardson, who handled Barbaro's care for the eight months he was hospitalized after his catastrophic injury in the Preakness

    Hello Barbaro,

Something tells me you did some grazing today. Maybe with a friend or two, busy sharing secrets...

Honey, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Have you been introduced to Cupid yet? No?! Honey...

First of all, Valentine’s Day is all about Love...mostly romantic love. Yuck! you say?! Well then, I need to fill you in about Cupid...

Honey, he’s a little pudgy Angel Baby. He carries a bow and beautifully sparkling magic arrows. They sparkle so brightly that they actually glow! He takes aim and if an arrow gets you, you will be in love!

But Honey, now this is important...the arrows come in two different colors, pink and red. The pink arrows are for Crushes. Crushes can feel so much like real love. Your heart skips a beat when you see or think about someone special. But Crushes usually don’t last too long.

The red arrows are for a deeper or true love. Honey, let me explain real Love to you this way...if someone special and you are grazing and there was only enough lush green grass for one of you, you would rather let them have the green grass than to have it yourself. Seeing them happy, makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Your heart actually skips a beat! This kind of love usually lasts a long time, if not forever...

Now, what are you going to do if you see Cupid tomorrow?..... RUN?!!! Barbaro!

Well, are you ready for your blanket? I think we'll use the warmer fuzzy one to unite you with your Fans that are dealing with harsh winter weather.

Let's pull it high on your neck and tuck the ends in gently around your legs. Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your day.

Honey, dream only sweet dreams tonight. The bright shine in the stars reminds me of the sparkle in your eyes...

I love you Barbaro. Good night now... Shhhhh. XXOOxx

    ######

    Hello Hope,

I was scooting through the Forum earlier tonight, and I stumbled on the thread that has a close-up picture of you. You are absolutely precious Little One. I love your colors! I realize that you are still healing. Deep pain and hurt takes time...

I was thrilled with your picture!

Hope, are you ready for your blanket? Are you going to be getting any of the winter weather that is concerning many? Let's cover you high on your neck and gently tuck the ends under.

Dream sweet dreams of beauty, healing and everlasting love. Please close your eyes Hope. Your Dream Angels are anxiously waiting Hope...

Good night. I love you so much... xxoox

I can't believe Barclay Tagg's comments that if NoBiz is not a Triple Crown candidate, then there has not been a Triple Crown candidate.
After last year when Barbaro was declared a Triple Crown Candidate only to break down in the Preakness, no one is going to want to hear another horse promoted as a Triple Crown possibility.
Furthermore, it is so insensitive of Barclay Tagg. Barbaro has been gone for only two weeks.

I've been thinking a lot about how the funding to fight laminits would be used. In Barbaro's case, pain management was not the problem. Dr. Dean used the appropraite cocktail and Barbaro felt okay. I think the biggest thing we needed help on was when Barbaro's hoof was trying to grow back after the hoof wall resecion. If we could learn how to get the tissue to grow uniformly would help. I know science can do it. Just remember to send funds of $29 on the 29th of each month. Do it for Barbaro. He was so close to being ready to come home!
