    Barbaro Updates: 206

    updates are now here.

Update 1483: Today's weather continued to have an impact on racing cancellations: Winter Storm Leads to Cancellations (my students thought it unfortunate it did not lead to cancellation of my class this afternoon).

It looks like Hard Spun will be taking on another Fair Hill horse (I say another as Hard Spun spent two weeks at fair Hill before his last start) in the Southwest: Xchanger ships in for Southwest.

Update 1482: A treacherous morning this morning. Not particularly cold, but ice everywhere. The track may well have been fine, but getting to the track was out of the question from Parlo 1. I ended up shedrowing eight this morning, starting with Hawty Creek, three for Tim (Nonpariel, Grandma and of course Slew) and four more (including Flash). The shedrow was pretty well organized so quite an easy morning really over all. A couple of the trainers in the barn did not made it in (one had no electric in their house etc.) but others there covered for them.

Frank DeFord of NPR discusses naming a race horse and the love of Barbaro: Barbaro's Baby Brothers: What's in a Name?

Update 1481: Bernardini has now begun his new career: Bernardini's First Breeding Is a Success. After reading Home Run Horse I recognize this is a big first step.

Hard Spun is now getting ready for the Southwest: Hard Spun in role of latest local hero. His recent work looks very strong, and of course we consider him local!

On Dubai World Cup news we have news on Discreet Cat: Discreet Cat may skip World Cup prep. Of course we are expecting a clash between Discreet Cat and Invasor in the World Cup.

The weather looks miserable outside, no doubt training will be impacted at Fair Hill.

    Comments

Good morning Alex, Barbaro and everyone! Yes, the weather is horrid here in NJ also, nothing but ice, ice and more ice :( Do take care walking and driving out there, best place to stay is indoors today. Very happy to hear that Bernardini's new career has started successfully!

    Take care out there today!

Happy Valentines Day Sweet Barbaro, Lost in the Fog and to all FOBs, the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, NBC Staff, Alex, Peter, Michael, TWR, all orphaned horses, all sick and injured animals...

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson - you are my heroes. Your donation will save so many horses lives, and will hopefully lead to a cure for laminitis. Dr. Richardson, thank you for the miracle of Barbaro for 8 more months. Dearest Barbaro, your legacy will live on forever!

Happy Valentine's Day, Barbaro! Happy Valentine's Day, Alex! Happy Valentine's Day, fellow Fans!

I'm happy to report that 2 more Maine FsOB contacted me yesterday so we now number 5! I will keep everyone posted on our activities.

Shelley - Congratulations on Mr. Boxcar's place yesterday. Maybe the snow allowed him to be a "stealth" horse...the competition just couldn't see him!

The snow has just begun to fall here in central Maine and we expect close to a foot. Everyone, take care in your travels today. My work has already cancelled for the day so I am free to stay home and contact legislators and compose letters to the editor.

    Happy Valentines Day Everyone.

Alex, thank you for the updates as always.

Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, you continue to amaze me, what grace and dignity you have shown throughout these last 9 months.

The endowment is a good 1st step in the Race for the Cure for Laminitis; however, donations are still needed. Please give what you can.

    ### Charlie Thanks for the info wanted to repost just in case some didn't see it yesterday.

Posted by: Charlie at February 13, 2007 8:45 PM

    Everyone,

What a wonderful gesture by the Jacksons to endow a faculty chair in honor of Dr. Richardson ! They are truly special people.

The way that an endowmed chair works is that the money is invested and the earnings from the investment are used to pay the salary and benefits of the faculty member "named" to hold that chair. This way the original gift is never "spent" but is used to generate income to support the "holder" of the chair, basically forever. In some cases, if earnings from the investment exceed the amount needed for salary and benefits, the balance can be used for research purposes. This is generally a decision made by the donor and the institution. While the chair is named in honor of Dr. Richardson, he may not actually be the faculty member "named" to hold the chair.

Many of you probably know all this and I mean no disrespect, ....so why am I sharing this information??..... because UPENN will still need considerable donations to support the actual research to find a cure for laminitis. $3M is a LOT of money, and will help tremendously, but we should not become complacent. I encourage anyone who wants to help and is financially able, to continue to donate to the Laminitis Fund (or research fund of your choice) so that we may see an end to the suffering and grief caused by this disease.....every bit helps.

    Thanks for listening..... Charlie

Happy Valentine's Day to Alex and fellow Fans of Barbaro. Bouquets of roses and green mints to all of you in memory of our sweet Barbaro.

We are in the middle of a blizzard here in NE Ohio. Freezing temps. and blowing and drifting snow for eight more hours, then the lake effect snow will kick in. I really hope that groundhog was right when he predicted an early spring.

It's a perfect day to send emails and make phone calls to the committees and one Ohio senator who needs to open his heart to anti-slaughter. Maybe today is the day.

    Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Barbaro, may you have the Sweetest Valentine's Day.

Lots of ice here in PA, cold and windy. I guess the ground hog was wrong, not the first time I guess. The road are really bad, but I made it to work. I think it was raining ice cubes last night, they were so big.

Alex, be careful out in the weather today.

Its a great day to call and fax the Senators, even through I heard they shout down DC.

Have a wonderful Wednesday and a Happy Valentine's Day to everyone.

Good morning Alex. Thanks for your tireless efforts. It is very much appreciated.

Happy Valentines Day Barbaro & FOB's.

Spent 1 1/2 hours digging out of my driveway this morning so I could come to work. Very brutal weather here in northern Ohio. Haven't been hammered with snow this bad for a long time.

I guess I will e-mail Senator Voinovich again today. It's been about a week I think since I e-mailed. Still no word on his position. I have contacted 10 friends and they say that they will do the same. I sure hope so.

For all of you who are in the cold and brutal weather-Stay warm and stay safe. Spring is just around the corner.

I'll chime in too - Happy Valentine's Day! Let's let our Love of Barbaro and all things Horse lead us into the antislaughter battle, full-tilt.

Speaking of Love and War - thought you might find this of interest.

    #########
Guess what? Our Slaughter Ban Tactics follow Classic Rules of War.

    http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0212072giuliani1.html

In my emailbox this morning - The Smoking Gun tells of a secret 1993 "vulnerability study" prefatory to Rudy Giuliani's successful run for Mayor of NYC. The gist includes the precise tactics advocated by our experts (such as Daryl Smoliak and NERC and Shelley A's inside sources) for our slaughter ban campaign. Lookee here:

    From the cover:

"The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable."
Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

    From the preface:

Each vulnerability outlined in this work is followed by a rebuttal strategy.... The rebuttal strategies...offer suggestions for answering the attacks of the opposition - and more.

That is precisely the format of our campaign. To make our position unassailable.

    Rah! Go get 'em!

    Happy Valentines Day Barbaro Nation!

Any shedrowing this morning, Alex? Be careful out on the roads.

The Jacksons never cease to amaze me, but then again I wasn't surprised with their unbelievable gesture. Tears of awe this time. If there were a Pulizer prize in (what's the equivalent word in philanthropy for animals?), they should win it.

It's a lousy day here in PA, good day to play hooky from work. :) A second day in a row off for me, actually. Yesterday was the day from hell for us here at home. Our lab had an encounter with a skunk Monday night. Both I and my teenage son have terrible colds, and believe me when I tell you we can't smell a thing! I let Shasta out around 9:00 p.m. and when she came in she was shaking her head and frothing at the mouth. She acts this way when she gets close to a groundhog or rabbit. I suspected a skunk maybe, and after much stiffing by me and my son to no avail, I called my lab-owing neighbor over to smell. She didn't think it was a skunk so we went to bed. The dog even slept with me as usual. Well my poor son went to school yesterday and I got a call as I was driving to work from the nurse saying that his shoes smelled like skunk! He drove home to change his shoes, but ended up staying home (they let school out early). Still driving to work I called my mom, who lives nearby, to go over and check out my house. Needless to say, the house was contaminated! I stopped at work long enough for everyone to turn their nose up at ME! and I turned around and came home. Spent the day decontaminating clothes, sheets, throw rungs, etc., took the dog to Petco for a deskunking bath, and luckily found someone to shampoo the rungs in my whole house before I went to pick up the dog. OMG!!! What a day. My fiance is a truck driver with a great nose, but unfortunately he was in Texas yesterday.

Anyway, I could use another day at home to clean the floors once again and do a pile more laundry. Phew!

Be careful everyone and stay warm!

    Michelle-GBI NE OH,
I don't know what the deal is with Voinovich. I don't see how any human being with a thread of decency could not be against horse slaughter. I bet we will get him on board, but it's just the wait that's agonizing. Forgive me if I've asked you before, what area of Oh. are you from? I'm 20 miles west of Cleveland.

A creature of beauty like no other kind,
You gallop through fields with your body of strength ...
You've traveled your life a journey of length,

I appreciate and respect the Jacksons' profound generosity and positive spirit. Out of every tragedy some good will come, as people then have the chance to improve things and to act with decency and goodness toward others.

Congratulations to Dr. Dean for this high honor. He truly earned it and deserves the confidence the Jacksons have placed in him.

Today I think of Barbaro being freed from his confinement during this nasty weather. But I miss his great presence very badly and still cry.

I wish the world were not reaping the results of our beautiful late fall and early winter with this fury that has been unleashed now. How very blessed, how amazing that Barbaro enjoyed the sweet grass and sunshine. Can I not make the connection - ? And yet, I would not wish this weather on any animal or human out there now. May this pass quickly to a more temperate condition.

HE IS ASKING FOR EVERYONE TO GO TO NPR TO SUBMIT NAMES FOR BARBARO'S BROTHER... and gives his reasons for wanting to honor this newest potential star, already the recipient of so much hope and honor............

GOOD MORNING FANS OF BARBARO! 13 NEW COSPONSORS FOR HR503! Great JOb! AWFB!

    ########
    REPOST
People have been asking why the co-sponsor list hasn't been increasing in regard to HR503 when they are being told by some of the reps that they are going to cosponsor.

The question many are asking is "Should they continue to call these Reps that haven't been added to the list and have said that they will be cosponsoring???
Although it should only take 24 to 48 hours for new cosponsors to show up on the co-sponsor list, it may take more time. Urge them to check the list in 10 days or so and if their Rep isn't listed yet, they should call that Rep again and urge them to cosponsor. Please ask everyone to try and speak with the staffer who takes care of the animal welfare bills as they will put more attention on these issues. The aide has a TREMENDOUS amount of influence on the final decision of your representative or senator.

In the meantime, it is VERY important to keep calling committee members. They are the ones that will get it to the floor for a vote.

So, bottom line is.....keep calling your representatives (HR503), senators (S311) and committee members.

    Hopefully, links will follow shortly.

    Have a great day!!

New Concord is near Zanesville, I have a relative who lives there. All of OH was hit hard.

I encourage everyone in OH and areas hit by this storm to check on neighbors, elderly and of course pets, go lend a hand if needed. Just digging out I have shoveled 6 hours already and barely making a dent.

Happy Valentines Day, Barbaro. You will own my heart forever. Have a wonderful day basking in the greatest Love of all.

Alex, thanks so much for all of your tireless work that allows us to share our love for Barbaro and all animals.

Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, you are the best example of selfless love that I know. I wish you the best Valentines Day ever, even though I know your hearts still grieve the loss of precious Barbaro. I am trying hard to live by your words, to live life today, not in the past or future. Barbaro was such a shining example of loving life. I also commit to do my share to end the slaughter of the innocents, find a cure for laminitis and make racetracks safer.

Dr. R - I pray for you a mended heart. To see the way you gave your heart to Barbaro is an inspiration to me to love easily and plentifully, even when there is great risk.

And to the FOBs, I am so amazed by your love for Barbaro, for animals in need and for each other. I wish you much love today.

Nina, Your dad lives about 150 miles southeast of where I am. No doubt he got blasted in his area also. He's due east of Columbus and my daughter goes to Ohio State and she got it bad there also. She is studying to become a Vetinarian. I'm proud of her(and also broke LOL)considering what I've learned here in the last 9 months.

Make sure you check on Dad today, OK. If he needs a lighter to light the furnace, I'll send him one, since you probably don't have any to spare.

Valentine Day Feedlot Rescue (with our good friends at Grace - Salvations rescuers)

Thank you Tim and Alex for this site. I don't post often, and only found you just over 2 weeks ago, but you all have been a godsend to me. You have been such a comfort during the last few days.

###Susan E. I'm so sorry for your loss. I have lit candles for your little Felix, among others, and asked him to say hi to all my little kitties that have passed over the years. I'm sure they were there to greet him at the Bridge.

###Lisa. So sorry to hear about your filly. She's running with the all the angels.

###Steve. Don't know any history about you and BDude, but sounds like you love the guy very much. You both are in my prayers.

Everyone please be safe in all the cold, snow, and ice areas. Not too bad here, but winter is hardly over yet!!8)

Thank you all for listening. I apologize if I seem to be rambling. Still trying to wake up.
    Take care.

I watched my blue, pale cream fawn and black greyhound girls leaping and bounding through the deep snow this morning. Edie and I have created an anti slaughter postcard as another method of correspondence to our senators and representatives.
It is eye catching, brief, should get through security quickly, and will be inexpensive to reproduce and mail.

See the ***Anti slaughter postcard*** thread
under Anti Slaughter Issues folder on the forum. If you can't access the forum, send an email to antislaughterlobby@earthlink.net for details on how to download...

We hope you find this useful.

What a Valentine's Day surprise! The mailman just delivered my package from Exclusively Equine with the 3 books I ordered the same time I ordered the Blood Horse issue. (I wondered why it came separately?) So, I have lots of reading material for the snowy Maine day - the TB Legends book on Assault, Women of the Year: Ten Fillies Who Achieved Horse Racing's Highest Honor, and Women in Racing: In Their Own Words. I've been busy writing those letters this morning so I'm due a break!

Snow is piling up - 5" since 6 am and still coming down. And cold - 10 or so. Stay safe, everyone. (Mary L. - I'd come shovel if I could!)

Sounds like it's a snowy, icy day for most of us. "Our" blizzard has moved on (to Ohio, for example) and today is sunny, a balmy 15 degrees, and a great deal of snow. My backyard looks like a wedding cake with bunny tracks.

My Valentine's Wish is for everyone to be safe and warm.

    Happy Valentine's Day everyone,

For all of you in the path of this storm, be safe and warm.

My Valentine's gift was unusual to say the least. My car broke down yesterday, in a blowing sub-zero snow storm. In bad times, I always try to see the positive, so as I sat shivering in my broken car, I was grateful for a cell phone, for AAA, and that my car, though broken, provided some shelter against the terrible wind. I was grateful that the car place could fix it that same day.

The final bill was $1,037.62. That's my valentine's present, but again, I was grateful for so many other things yesterday that the bill was easier to handle. Hence, no flowers today.

As I paid the guy at the car place, I asked him kindly if he'd take some of that $$ and donate to a rescue org. He looked at me like I was from another planet. I then asked him kindly to call our state reps instead. He was unaware of the slaughter issue. Not anymore! I sent him an e-mail this morning with the phone numbers, etc, and asked that his staff call as well.

It's all about finding the good through a bad situation.

Take care everyone and make it a blessed day, stay safe.

Good morning and Happy Valentine's Day Alex and all FOB's...stay safe and warm!

A suggestion wrt ensuring we keep the candles lit: Every day I receive a reminder from The Animal Rescue Site to click everyday to help feed an animal. Taking that cue, I've set up a self-reminder in my Outlook calendar that prompts me - every day - to light the candles for Barbaro and others. I include the site link in the reminder as well as notes on those who I am lighting candles for.

It really helps me remember, maybe it can help others, too!

Posted by: Maria K. at February 14, 2007 5:16 PM

I just came across a quote which I think applies to people who do not understand our love for Barbaro/animals:

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened"

Just think of them as people where that part of their soul is unawakened or deprived. There are far too many of them, as we know. These may be very nice, very good people who one day may see the light.

    Good morning, dear ones -

Happy Valentine's Day to all. It is a poignant one, but there is still so much to celebrate, in the name of love.

I value you each of you, and find courage, intelligence, friendship, acceptance and inspiration at this site every day. Thank you all for being part of my life.

I will forever be grateful for having had the privilege of watching the Boss Hoss throughout his journey, and for the truly splendid people who shared him with us. It is delightful to know that there are folks who do the right thing because it is the right thing, and without further motive.

I am grateful for Mr. Brown, Mr. Woolley, and all who make this meeting place and information clearing house possible.

I am grateful for the artists who share here, the wise who post here, and the loving hearts who embrace here.

Everyone in the cold and snow, be warm and safe. All those, like myself, in warmer climes, try not to let the guilt get to you. (Ha!)

Welcome to the new folks, best wishes for Steve and BDude, condolences to Lisa on the loss of her filly, and warm thoughts to all here. I've sent checks now to Laminitis, several rescues, TRF, TB Friends, and am going to make my valentine of the past ***40**** (GULP!) years chicken enchiladas when I get home. He says, "Well, it's nice to know I'm first AFTER the horses..." I do love the man...

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and (((hugs))) to everyone.

Have a Barbaro Valentine's Day - courage, heart and kindness!

13 NEW COSPONSORS FOR HR503! Great JOb! AWFB!

This verifies the information below. It seems that it is taking a little longer administratively to get the list updated. So, as you can see, we're rolling along!!!!

    ########

    ALEX - ALEX - ALEX

Repost - it is so hard to get anyone's attention here. Hope you are safe and warm at your home, taking a well-deserved break.

Alex - I love to vicariously live your morning experiences with your horses. Not being a good morning person, this may be the reason I've never had a horse myself.

But I have a question about gate training. When you are training a young horse, I guess it is partly just a matter of getting them used to being in and around the gate.

As far as breaking from the gate, is there a particular trigger a horse is trained to see, feel, experience, and then break? Or is it just the opening of the gate itself and then they go?

I am wondering why some horses will break through before the actual start, and what might set them off.

Thanks for the info. Thanks for this fabulous site. It's been a veritable lifeline during this heartbreaking experience.

I told my husband the other day--no gifts or flowers--we should donate what we'd spend on those to the animals. So what did I find in my unopened stack of mail? A newsletter from my home town humane society--HEARTland Humane Society! That's a pretty strong sign!

Maria K--I "click" on the Animal Rescue Site everyday, myself. How great would it be if we could set up a similar site where every "click" goes to a horse rescue donation or to laminitis research!?! A great concept!

For those of you wondering about little Erin Brennan, I checked her page at caringbridge.org last night and it sounds like she's doing really well--going to school and anxious for their Valentine party. (For the new folks, Erin is the daughter of Annie from Kennett Florist. She's 6 years old and was diagnosed with a brain tumor.)
    Keep her in your prayers!

Stay warm, everyone! Extra hugs and kisses today for your furry friends (but no chocolate!) :0)

Just hung up from my congressman's office and they are having a meeting this afternoon to make the decision to co-sponsor HR503. They've done a lot of research and gotten lots of calls. The aide in charge said he can't see any reason Congressman Murphy would not co-sponsor and he is going to get back to me later today. As he said, "Hopefully, with good news!"

Also had a great conversation with Senator Landrieu's office today. We now have 21 co-sponsors in the senate. She also said that we have a lot of support in the committee and they would be putting together a "solid strategy" in the next couple of weeks. But they wanted to get as many co-sponsors as possible before taking the next step.

So, all your efforts are starting to pay off. After my conversations today, I REALLY think we're going to get this done!!!!

Anybody heard any word on Hillary yet? From what I've heard she has not committed. I don't understand why one would not co-sponsor this year a Bill that they co-sponsored last year. Is it because she's a Presidential candidate?

We think Vivi's cage was either dropped or fell off the conveyor belt as she was being loaded into the airplane - that may have broken her latch - when she got out of her cage, Delta and airport personnel chased after her - being scared, she kept running - then they got airport vehicles and started chasing after her with those - a scared whippet will run and run and run. And you can't catch a scared dog that can run 35 mph.

I just saw the prior update, and am just so thankful to the Jacksons for making it possible for the horrible disease of laminitis to become an equine research priority. At least we will know someday whether it can be effectively treated, if not prevented. Nothing is certain, given the nature of this disease to suddenly appear in many different ways, but at least now there will be a light of hope shining to let us know someone is trying to stop it.

Thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson from my heart. You can be sure that those who loved Barbaro will help, as well.

My greyhounds come to me too but they know me and if I do chase them - they think it is a game. With Vivi, she was scared - perhaps if they had left her alone, she would have stopped running and her owner, who deplaned immediately upon hearing that she was lost - could have called for her and captured her - a very unfortunate situation indeed. What is sad is that Delta does not claim any fault in this and continues to say that Vivi escaped.

She was seen running from the airport into the marshland that surrounds JFK and she has been spotted in Forest park and other areas around Queens - for an airline worker to have taken her - don't think so - but there is speculation that she may have been caught by someone who either doesn't know she is Vivi and is just a stray or who does know she is Vivi and just doesn't want to give her back. Until they find her or her body - the search and fundraising to keep the word out continues.

    Skyler,

Ha! I know!! Hey Dont say us Minnesotan's never gave ya nothin'....remember we also gave the world Jesse Ventura as a politician too!!

I miss my two best pals from MN Paul Wellstone and Bruce Vento. Both have passed away recently. Bruce Vento was my science teacher in Jr High and he became a US Federal Rep for many years... Back in the 80's he worked hard for Race Horses to ban horse drugging and other rules for track safety betterment issues. The Lasix law was later repealed, as I understand it....but he was a true friend to the horse. I miss him alot and I know he would have fought hard for anti-slaughter legislation. Paul Wellstone also a friend to animals.
Vento died from a rare form of lung cancer due to working as a teenager in an unsafe Asbestos factory and Wellstone and most of his family were tragically killed in a plane crash.
They both would have been FOB's for sure.

Barbaro...You gave us the gift of LOVE.
    Every minute of the day...

We are wishing you fun and playful days running free of pain...missing you every second, but knowing in our hearts...you are happy and free. We know you will have another comfortable night and look forward to each day.

Barbaro Nation...with Barbaro's love he has brought all of us together as family in the HOUSE THAT BARBARO BUILT. We stand united speaking for the ones that cannot speak....

We earnestly pray for a quick passing of the Barbaro Bill...to end this brutal slaughter, to find loving homes, to find cure for laminitis and the list goes on...BARBARO HAS LEFT US TASKS TO BE FINISHED...For us to cross the finish line in flying colors.

Please remember the unspoken and spoken requests..I also pray for Vivi's owners and that she returns safe and sound soon...I know Barbaro would be pleased.

We genuinely thank Mr. and Mrs. Jackson for their gift of love and honoring Dr. R...

In due respect, we will honor Mrs. Jackson by heeding to her requests.

Please help your fellow man in this awful weather, all animals large or small.

All of you are such loving people, and in my heart you all are special Valentines every day.

    HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY.
    Blessings to All.

I wonder if I am looking at the correct paintings???? The painting I see of Barbaro Dog is a single dog with no other dogs in the painting. There are other paintings of dogs by the same artist and they seem to be how Mr Jackson described. If I am looking the same painting, then possible names for Triple B could be:

    Sereno
    Rusteau
    Lentenor
    Morico
    Metamort
    Nicanor

I submitted some names to the NPR guy too. Based on the way he was running the contest, he wanted more of a cross between LaVille Rouge, Dynaformer and Barbaro.

    Here were mine:

    Kid Dynamite (Dynaformer/Barbaro/TripleB)
    BlastfromthePast (Dynaformer/Barbaro)
    Red Explosion (Dynaformer/La Ville Rouge)
    French Fry (Laville Rouge/Barbaro/TripleB)
    Iftheshoefits (Barbaro/TripleB)

    Cathy Potter,

I am reposting my message from yesterday.

I just wanted to share the following email which I received from Senator Clinton today:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act .

As you may know, in 2005 I voted with 69 of my colleagues in favor of an amendment to the Fiscal Year 06 Agriculture Appropriations bill that prohibited the use of federal funds to support horse slaughter under the Federal Meat Inspection Act . This amendment was signed into law in November of 2005.

In 2006, I am working to pass a broader ban on the slaughter of horses. On September 7 th , 2006, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 503 , American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, by a vote of 263-146. I am a cosponsor of the Senate version of this bill, which is now on the calendar awaiting action by the full Senate. I recently joined a number of my Senate colleagues in signing a letter to the Senate leadership requesting this legislation be moved to the Senate floor for a vote without delay to put an end to the practice of slaughtering American horses for human consumption overseas. I believe it is vital that this bipartisan, common sense legislation be enacted as soon as possible.

Thank you again for sharing your concerns with me . Please check my website at http://clinton.senate.gov or updates on this and other issues being discussed before the United States Senate .

    Sincerely,

    Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hoping to get some clarification so I make some sense in the letters I'm sending to senators & reps:

if they are on the committee - like the Agriculture comm, can they still co-sponsor the bill? Or if they are on the committee, are we just asking them to support the bill and bring it to a vote?

    Thanks.

To Susan E.: Thanks, yes, Brent is one in a million.
To Anita: Loved the quote about people who've never loved an animal.
    To Jean Nolan: Amen!
To Renee: Sorry to read about your scary ride in the car. Please stay safe, OK? I'm afraid that all of this "wet" will freeze up tomight.
To Steve: BDude really understands our Sublime One's fighting spirit, doesn't he?
To Dawn: Thank you for the update about Erin, the daughter of one of Alie's staff members at Kennett Square Florist.
Has anyone heard from Mike Rea's family lately?
To Skyler: I'm glad that you are safe. You used a "teachable moment" with the AAA guy and hopefully he will spread the word with other kind folks. Anyone who's heard me talk about the slaughterhouses has expressed total shock. Lord knows I didn't know about them until I entered the Barbaro Nation in 2006.

Thank you for sharing the response from Senator Clinton. Please note that she is referencing the 2006 Bill. To date she has not committed to co-sponsoring. When the Senate failed to bring S1915 to the floor last December for vote, both bills in House & Senate had to be re-introduced and members have to sign up all over for co-sponsorship. It does Not carry over.

Committee members can be co-sponsors. For example here in La Quinta, Mary Bono is a co-sponsor and a member of the House Committee where HR 503 is currently held. Same goes for our Barbara Boxer. She is a co-sponsor and member of the Commerce Committee.

Hi all, fighting a terrible headcold and stiff shoulders from fighting with the snow on my driveway. Ugh. Something Friar Tuck posted a while back struck a chord about influencing your circle to call their legislators. All of the additional co-sponsors that are coming on board are really due to the flooding of calls they're getting. And as committed as all of us is to this cause, we are only single individuals. Calling on our own over and over again isn't nearly as effective as calling our circle of friends, family and colleagues to encourage them to take action for this Bill. The power is in the numbers. Reach out to everyone you know via the anti-slaughter postcard, the links to fact-based information available from this board, to educate others about this horrific practice. Update: Humane Society of Missouri's Horse Heroes

Rescued horses Stan and Dudley DoRight take Humane Society staff for a ride!

    February, 2007

    Dear Karen,

Thank you so much for your generous support of the horses we rescued last September.  I wanted to take a moment to update you on the horses' progress and healing.

It's hard to believe it has been more than four months since we rescued 25 horses and a hinny from an overturned trailer on Interstate 44.  The trailer had been bound for a slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Illinois, but we made a commitment to keep this group of horses safe.

With the generous support of horse lovers in Missouri and across the country, the surviving horses have received care and rehabilitation at the Humane Society of Missouri's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri.

The rescued horses faced an uphill path to recovery but have received the best care available at Longmeadow.  We are thrilled with the progress made by many of the horses, some of whom are now ready to be adopted.

These Horse Heroes have either gone home or are waiting to go to their new adoptive homes:

    • Spanky

    • Freedom

    • Crashina

    • Dudley DoRight

We recently rode two of the horses, Dudley DoRight and Stan, around the indoor arena at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch's Learning Center.  We had a great time!  Dudley DoRight behaved like the gentleman he is.   Stan, a 19-year old Thoroughbred bred to be a racehorse, showed the energy and spirit expected of a much younger horse.

It is so gratifying to see these horses thriving.  They have come so far since last September.

We are sincerely grateful for your support of these horses.  For continuing updates on their progress, please visit our website.

    Kindest regards,

    Kathryn W. Warnick
    President

Love to all family today and every day! I love you sweet Angel Barbaro, always and forever.

Hi All: How's everyone holding up with this nasty weather. Happy Valentines Day to all.

I just gave my choice in for naming Bobby's baby brothers.

We purchased a horse yesterday at the OBS sale and that is exactly what I'm doing with my partners now. Trying to find a name for the new little guy. He is just so cute, he's Roan(actually a medium gray) and he's my Walk's half brother(they have the same dad and my husband keeps telling me that in the horse racing world they are not considered related but to me he's Walk's baby brother).

Anyway, just wanted to check in to see how you guys are doing and to let you know my heart will always be with this website.

Our Bobby was very special and he will never be forgotten. In fact, I just ordered the commemorative issue that Bloodhorse is putting out on Barbaro and also a book on Barbaro.

Hi Karen: I'm still checking in every day just to see how everyone is holding up.

I miss talking about the big guy and watching his progress but I'm trying to come to grips with the fact that he's in a better place and free from pain.

Yes, my little guy is a real cutey and I can't wait until May so I can finally meet him. I miss my horses. I have two basking in the sun in Florida and one in Philly. I can't wait until they come home so that I can give them lots of hugs and kisses.

As long as this site remains open I will continue to visit. We shared so much and this place is still very important to me.

What is she eating on the ground? Alfalfa? Hay? I see the chickens are enjoying it also...it's so funny to watch here at work...chickens, horses, dogs...Will she stop eating for a while before she has the baby?

You stole my heart with those thick brown eyes and black as black mane...

and when you crumbled, I loved you more...yes, even more...

So, let the tears come, and I know they will...perhaps,

They never will end ...Forever a constant in my life...Just like

I'm having a bad day too. I read Equine Heaven's lovely Valentine's Day entry and cried over Barbaro's sweet message to his Mom and Dad Jackson. Later I watched the video of all his races, stopping short of the Preakness. It's when you see his races one after the other that you realize how astonishing he was. He was breath-taking.

I didn't know of Barbaro until after the Preakness, so I followed the wounded warrior here as most of us did. I fully expected him to make it. God, how he tried!

It's so unbearably sad to have lost this incredible colt who never, until the morning of January 29, knew the meaning of defeat. He was like a shooting star lighting all the world around him for a few brief and beautiful moments.

There will never be another Barbaro, and I miss him. I miss him.

    Hello,

I have not posted before, but wanted to pass on this response that I received from Rep. Baldwin today. Sorry for the length or if it has been posted before...

Thank you for contacting me regarding pending horse slaughter
legislation within the 110th Congress. It is good to hear from you,
and I apologize for the delay in my response.

As you may know, over 90,000 horses are slaughtered in the
United States annually and the horsemeat is sold for human
consumption. As a member of the Congressional Friends of
Animals Caucus, I have serious concerns regarding the conditions
    at horse slaughterhouses.

As you may know, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, H.R. 503
is currently pending in the House Committee on Energy and
Commerce. This bill would prohibit the shipping, transporting,
moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or
donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human
consumption. Although similar legislation was passed by the
House of Representatives during the 109th Congress, it was not
passed by the U.S. Senate. This bill is important to many residents
of the Second District of Wisconsin. I have heard from many
constituents, such as you, who have strong views on this issue. I
understand the concerns of many who object to specific provisions
of this legislation. I believe that the way we treat our animals is a
reflection of our society as a whole, and I vehemently oppose any
inhumane treatment of horses. Please know that I will carefully
consider these views as I consider co-sponsorship of H.R. 503.

Currently there is additional legislation, H.R. 249, which restores
the prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild, free-
roaming horses and burros. Upon introduction, H.R. 249 was
referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources, on which I
do not serve. Please know that I will keep your views in mind as I
consider my support of this legislation.

Again, thank you for sharing your views. Your opinion matters to
    me.

    Sincerely,

    Tammy Baldwin

    Hello Barbaro,

Happy Valentine’s Day Honey! Did Cupid play a part in your day today?!

I stayed home from work today as I have something to do which is a complete labor of love. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend Valentine’s Day being my husband had to work...

With all of the "bobbing and weaving" you did around Cupid today, I’m sure you’re ready to call it a day, aren’t you?

Honey, you have Fans that are dealing with some rather extreme weather conditions. Let’s say a prayer that they are all safe and warm, fluffing up their favorite blankets and getting ready to snuggle in for the night. Are you ready? Yes, I’ll wait.
    .
    .
    .
Amen. Yes Honey, they all know you love them...

Now, let’s grab your blanket and get you settled. You know Honey, I don’t think we need the heavier blanket tonight. It is Valentine’s Day...A day to let those you love, know just how important they are to you. A day to hold their essence near if distance should keep you apart...

Tonight, especially tonight, you will find warmth from your loved ones here on Earth. This warmth will cradle you into an enchanting dream vision of your Mommy and Daddy beside you with your Lael grass, Dr. Richardson and his fondest memory of walking outside in the grass with you. Michael, Peter and you conditioning each other for you to reach your full potential. And Alex, who did some "bobbing and weaving" of his own while with you, avoiding your playful nips...

Honey, I love you. So much. Happy Valentine’s Day...

Let’s pull this blanket up high, to unite you with your Fans that are dealing with extreme weather. We’ll wrap the ends gently under your legs. Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days.

Dream sweet dreams Honey. Love will warm you. Memories will hold you...near.

Good night. I’m in love with you. XXOOxx

    Hello Hope,

Happy Valentine's Day Little One! Were you treated to some extra special Valentine goodies? I hope your tummy is nice and full!

I have to tell you Hope, I am sooo excited for your foal! I wonder if it's a colt or a filly...hmmmm. And a name! Your baby's gonna need a name...hmmmmm.

Well, with all of this wondering, I'm getting tired! So why don't we grab your blanket and tuck you in.

The Dream Angels are just aflutter with excitement to start on your dream visions for the evening...

Now close your eyes and follow your Angels Hope. Have sweet dreams and Hope, I love you very much. Happy Valentine's Day Little One... Good night. xxoo

You are soooooooo right. There will never be another Barbaro.... As there will never be another Slew or Secretariat. You know all of the horses that are legends are special in their own way.... Barbaro is for sure a colt that made a huge difference in all of the future horses. He is an absolute doll... It won't be long before we will really be with him. We will be able to ride him and pet him and love him for real..... Just keep the faith and don't EVER lose it......

God took Barbaro for a reason and that reason is starting to become clear to me... As hard as it was for me when he was put down, I cryed and cryed and cryed..... I blamed God, I blamed everyone.... But you know? There was a reason and because of our beautiful Barbaro, the horses that are in foal and aren't even born yet will have a chance for a GOOD life... That is truly what God wanted isn't it?

Barbaro is very much with all of us and he knows it. He will never leave my thoughts nor my heart. Slew never did and neither did the rest. They all have a special piece of my heart. My heart is big enough for all of them.........

(((((Love to my angel Barbaro))))) Happy Valentines day my big buddy and thank you for being YOU............ ;-)

    #### Equine Heaven...

I am coming to you because I have had enough. A few months ago, I started to do a protocol with a skating coach. She was going to coach my own skating, set me up with furthering my education with the Professional Skating Association and put me on board to coach at her rink. Well in the last several months, she has been leading me down this yellow brick road and I cannot take it anymore. I am seeing a doctor to get off of Valium and get healthy. This is not making it easy on me. She keeps me on a string. I need for you to talk to God and find out what it is I should do here. I love to skate and I don't want to stop that. I have two pair of beautiful custom skates and a gold medal in ice dancing. I want to persue my skating but I don't deserve to be treated like she is treating me. She is suppose to be a director of a rink for God sakes......... geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh..... I need some guidence.. Will you talk to Barbaro and get back with me please...... I can't do this anymore.... I am so sad that I feel like slipping away..... No-one deserves to be treated like I have been by her in the last few months.......... She never emails me until I send her an email telling her that I can't work with her anymore. Then BAM she sends me one right away and says I am sorry....... I am in tears not only because of Barbaro but because this person is messing with my life...... I have put my trust in her and I feel like I am on a merry go round that never stops........

((((( Love you Barbaro..... HELP))))))) You are my angel and I will listen to what you have to say because it will be coming from God................. Please talk to God for me big buddy......... I need to do something here and I just don't know how to handle this......

Yes, that is good news about Bernardini. But I feel sad that Barbaro didn't have that, not even just to be alive so he can graze and enjoy the sun.

I miss and love him so. He'll always be in my heart.

I missed reading posts for a day or so, and when I finally come here, it feels so good to see all of you.

Laurie H., oh my, the tears just fall. Such beautiful expressions of love on this day of love. Equine heaven was just, well, heavenly.

Thanks to Trish in NC (2:47 a.m, 2/13) for the "Day of Despair" link. A reminder of how calm and in control of himself our boy was almost from that moment. I just can't believe it didn't turn out the way it should have. It's just not right. Yes, I know...I know...I know...

So happy for the MO horses. Kewl that we can play with little bro names for our boy's siblings.

Alex, this is probably a stupid question, but was there always winter racing in the U.S.? I really can't imagine enjoying going to the track when it's zero degrees out, and I can't imagine the horses liking it or the jockeys either. It's too bad everyone can't rest for the winter. I feel badly for you out there freezing everything off in the early morning hours, too. Gads, today was a bad weather day, wasn't it?

Belatedly, I hope it was a very Happy Valentine's Day for all. How wonderful and generous of the Jacksons to endow the chair at UPenn. What incredible people. I worry about Dr. R--when are we going to see Jeannine's interview? Inquiring minds want to know ;)

    Nina,

Probably not place to say something but I will. Hearing you talk about skating brings back memories of when I first started to play hockey. It was right after the Miracle on Ice in 1980 that I decided to take up hockey. Didn't have a lot of support in my dream so I went to the rink week after week teaching myself to skate(and learn how to effectively use ice packs). Well eventually I got to the point where I played in high school and in college, and the best part was that it was all acheived on my terms. I didn't start as the most gifted skater, but the inspiration I had from the US hockey team win was huge. Part of that drive to succeed helped me not only in sports but in other aspects of my life.

What does this all mean? I don't know. But I look back over the years at inspirational moments and I definitely put the US victory as one and now the whole story behind Barbaro as another. Perhaps they both occured during difficult times in this country and made us feel good, or because they both involved gifted atheletes excelling at the top of their game through courage, desire, and pride. Things we don't see all that often in everyday life.

So sad today, remembering how I was looking forward to being part of the Valentine's Day treats to be ordered from Kennett Square florist. I am hoping I can still order treats for the other horses (the blood donors?) there, sometimes, in memory of Barbaro.

Good night Barbaro. Happy Valentine's Day. I love you too.

Now sleep tight, keep cuddling your little boy after his big surgery and know that you have warmed all of our hearts. I look for your tuck-in each night.
Happy Valentine's Day precious Barbaro and love to all of the FOBs.

Our sweet Barbaro - your message to your mom and dad has broken my heart, again... you are such a good boy, and your spirit is ever more present, leading us on this journey of enlightenment. I am so thankful we have interpreters to bring us the news and keep us informed of your creative goings on and wishes.

Here is news from one of your friends, Joe at TB Friends, who has many thoughts on a daily basis about the state of your brothers and sisters...

    -----------------
Wednesday, February 14th... Happy Valentines Day. We begin with a big thank you to Julie Spriggs who lives near Lincoln. Tbfriends stands for Thoroughbred Friends. We like to concentrate on saving race horses. Or thoroughbreds from feed lots and auctions. But often we will be asked to take other breeds. At the Sacramento track is harness racing, which means the horses are Standardbreds. We love Standardbreds. Their intelligence level can reach the moon. But once again, we are a thoroughbred rescue ranch. Julie Spriggs says whatever, she will help us with any breed. And so yesterday Julie hauled two Standardbred geldings to her cute 6 acre ranch, and today we salute her kindness. Allowing us much needed space. 109 horses on our muddy ranch, with more on the way. Our 13 foster homes are filled beyond belief. As of this morning Cathy and I have 158 horses. Yes we are insane. And at least five times a day I have to say no to needy horses. Or else our population would be in the thousands.

Two weeks ago a thoroughbred mare came to us from a fancy ranch in the bay area. We had to agree to change her name, so the mare is now known as Candy because she is incredibly sweet. A lady bought Candy in another country for big time dollars. But Candy refused to jump, so the lady tells her bye bye. Candy is wonderful on trails. My wife Cathy does not really ride horses, but she jumped on Candy and they had a nice quiet ride through the grapevines behind our ranch. And this past Sunday Candy met her new owner. A young college student at UC Davis, and the two actually rode off in the sunset together. You could have made a Hallmark movie. Candy was to be euthanized if we did not agree to certain conditions. When it comes to life as opposed to death, we always agree to what anyone wants.

Not every free horse is a Candy. But we are sure seeing more of her kind. Well trained and talented thoroughbreds with little value. Almost every day another one becomes available.

A friend at the race track, and her name is Michelle. She feeds and waters our horses until we can arrange transportation. Over the phone Michelle says race horses are being given away like never before. I tell her this is a good thing, right? At least they are not being sold to killers. You will soon read an upcoming paragraph from Michelle. Telling of the questionable people who come for these free horses. She worries for their future.

    -----------------

Where can they all go? Why couldn't we keep the one we wanted, in our selfish desire to heap all love on this beautiful old soul who opened our eyes? I weep for him, for us, for the Jacksons and Matzes and Brettes and Alex and Dr. R... our hearts are laid bare.

Precious equines, from all walks of life, we send you our respect and protection. We ask that your lives be rimmed with beauty and that those of the highest intentions intervene for your protection.

We will never understand you. At last, now, we know that. Godspeed to all of you. May your finset potential be at the helm, now and forever.

Equine Heaven really did me in today. Why, oh why did all this have to happen, why, my God why?

Yesterday at the drug store where I picked up my photographs taken at Golden Gate Fields two weeks ago when Harry Aleo's five year old mare, BRITE 'N HAPPY, raced, a woman standing behind me with her little girl craned her neck to see the pictures of the horse and asked me if she were mine... when I told her about the photos, she said that SHE HAD BEEN GIVEN A TWO YEAR OLD FILLY from the race track who just didn't want to run. She has subsequently sold her to a young teenage girl, because she said the filly knew nothing except the inside of a small stall and running, and although she was very sweet she was not smart. She said the filly kept hurting herself, banged her head several times, hurt a leg, had no reining training - she blamed this on the lack of education of the horse and her isolated training environment. This was a nice woman, (?), well spoken, apparently familiar with some horsemanship, but I was shocked that a two year old from the track could have been expected to have much more training than she apparently did - I would have thought someone knowledgeable would have had more patience and understanding, and I can see how these horses (see my post above from Joe at TB Friends) end up in such places if they are being given away with such facile disregard. One can easily see how a sweet young filly could slide down the slippery slope in the wrong hands... Of course we talked about slaughter, but this was one of those people who felt it had little to do with her busy life...

Thank you all for a wonderful day of loving posts, both for Barbaro and his world and for each other. This site is easily the most comforting place I could ever have conjured up in my wildest dreams, and I for one would never have imagined it would still carry on with an essence of Barbaro and the world which surrounded him, in its most benevolent and all encompassing way.

Happy Valentine's Day, Big B, sweet Baboo. We left here behind do miss you, every day, in every way...

Nina, the more you post, the more I become concerned about your mental health. Today really concerns me!! Please seek some help and talk to someone. .

please also be VERY careful posting too much personal information and your issues on a site that gets over 7,000 visits a day.

Please seek some Medical help soon. I clearly am concerned about your postings lately.

    Hello FOB

Hope everyone had a Happy Valentine's Day. I'm sure Barbaro got a lot of kisses from all the angels, he's just so irresistable after all. (We know the type... tall, dark, handsome, strong, brave, smart, truthful, compassionate, to name a few.) I hope the people of this world will learn from you Barbaro. You have given us so much! All my love to you Barbaro and to all FOBs and thank you Alex for all that you do!

    Laurie H,
    I, too love your tuck-ins.

Have you ever thought about putting them together in a book? I'll bet many FOBs, even those of us who haven't posted often, would like to have the collection.
