Barbaro Updates: 215

updates are now here.

Update 1525: Alie, from Kennett Florist, posted this comment (timestamp: 9:55pm):

Hi All
It is still verrrrrrrry cold in Kennet Square. We have another storm watch for Sunday into Monday morning. I can't wait for it to warm up. We have been busy catching up form Valentines Day. I am getting close to seeing my desk again. Of course you know how to clean your desk is to put on someone else's. Like Rachel's, it our little joke. We are very excited about April 29th. It will be so cool to meet so many of you in person. It will be a busy weekend. We have kennett high's prom on Friday. Sat we are open as normal. If all goes well the art fundraiser will still be held for laminitis and I will be helping Marge & Shelia with that. Sunday we will be with you all at DE Park. I am trying to get the word out to local FOB who are not on the net and staff at NBC. I told the Jackson's about it. Gretchen called me to catch up, on Thursday morning. They are still away but will be back soon. It is funny how this week was so hard on me. It all hit me: nothing will ever be the same again. My car even wants to turn into NBC. I have been making that turn almost every day for 8 months. I miss talking to Dr Sweeney & staff daily. I also miss seeing Gretchen often. I talked to Dr Sweeney this week, even on her vacation; we needed to be in touch. I think that last week none of us had really talked. So this week we were missing the bonds that Barbaro had made in our lives. Not just to FOB's but each other. This whole experience has changed us all. I have never thought in my wildest dreams this could have happened. I have no words to describe it all but wow. I want to thank you all for being apart of this. We will away love and miss the boss horse. Good night from Kennett Square & KF
Alie

This is interesting: From Barbaro Fandom to Political Activism ...

and this is more interesting: Slaughterhouse opponents told Cavel has 3 months to make fixes.

Update 1524: Just spoke to Peter Brette in warmer Florida. They worked Aunt Henny, Chelokee and Round Pond today. Peter said they were very happy with how each of them worked. Chelokee went 5/8ths really well. Round Pond's work was very good, she sat in behind horses and switched to the outside and was very strong. Both Aunt Henny and Chelokee are likely to run next weekend.

Update 1523: Who's Happy was third this afternoon at Philadelphia Park. It was another sprint race, and on a speed favoring track, the winner went wire to wire. Happy ran well, but Tim now thinks it is time to stretch her out. She is a big filly and looks like she will go long.

Fans of Barbaro are gathering at Delaware Park on April 29: Fans of Barbaro plan DelPark celebration in April. While this event is still in the planning stages, I am pretty psyched about it. Delaware Park is a pretty race track. The grove, where the barbeque will be, is in a perfect spot right by the paddock area.

Update 1522: A brutally cold morning again at Fair Hill this morning. The wind drove the temperature to the single digits I assume. I ended up riding seven this morning. I started off by shedrowing Hawty Creek (I am now quite glad she did not get in for monday, we are in for some more bad weather over the next couple of days I think), and then rode Naughtical Agent around the horsepaths with Tim (on Lucky). I then went to the track with Chesapeake City Slew, Tim was on Nonpariel. They both galloped really well together, Slew was taking a very strong hold. For the next set Tim and I took Grandma (me) and Quick Quest. Again they both galloped well. I was in front on Grandma, and as we were galloping out of the turn coming down the lane a horse in front of us spooked at the gate, ducking in, the rider lost his irons and thankfully did not fall off in front of us (as Grandma would have surely then propped). Anyway, all was well, good to see a world class jockey (Ramon Dominguez) showing excellent balance! The rest of my rides on the track were reasonably uneventful. A few trainers (Motion and Lawrence for example) were breezing horses on the Tapeta track this morning. The track seemed to ride well.

It seems Jose Santos' injuries are worse than they first appeared after a spill at Aqueduct: More Bad News for Injured Santos; Dominguez Returning. On Dominguez, the article notes:

According to the jockey's agent, Steve Rushing, Dominguez suffered bruising to the bone which has healed in the past three weeks. He will begin exercising horses Saturday and is expected to be accepting mounts at Aqueduct by Wednesday.

Well he was exercising horses at Fair Hill, and thankfully did not fall in front of me which may not have helped in his recovery!

Tim's Who's Happy is in at Philadelphia Park this afternoon, the sixth race.

Update 1521: The University of Pennsylvania's Barbaro message board has now been closed, they have created this Barbaro page in its place: Remembering Barbaro. They have graciously included a link to our discussion forum from the page.

Smarty Jones had a small complication resolved quickly: Smarty Jones Treated for Minor Reproductive Tract Blockage.

On the work tab yesterday, aside from NoBiz, we also had Lava Man in California: Lava Man whistles in Big Cap workout.

Fair Hill's Tapeta track is scheduled to open at 8 am this morning. Hawty Creek did not get in for her race on monday at Philadelphia Park. They did not use the race. Her next race might not be until the middle of March at this point!

Happy Weekend Alex, Barbaro, and fellow FsOB

Thank you Alex for all the information. I'm going to check out "Remembering Barbaro" right away.

I just woke up to the sound of "and here comes Barbaro - the undefeated Barbaro". I can't believe I was dreaming of that. I wonder if that means something.

Checked on Rosie - camera is down. I wonder if anything has happened there.

Have a great weekend everyone! Let's get geared up for our anti-slaughter fight next week.

Good Morning Alex and Janice.

This is still the first stop in the morning for me. It not only has been my Barbaro compass for the last 9 months, and the place to hear and read of great stories, and a place of friendship, love, dedication, and hope...it has become like a second home. In fact, it is the house that Barbaro built, and should forever remain a place of friendship, love, dedication, and hope. That's the way B would want it.

Alex, looking forward to the "Remembering B" page. Thanks for all your effort. I really appreciate it. Say hi to Hawty from all her FOB's today, will ya? Thanks!

Good morning Alex, FOB, & Sweet Heavenly Barbaro.

It's a cold one again this morning... be careful Alex.
Sorry to hear that Hawty Creek did not get into the race on Monday.

I am so glad that NBC put your link on their Barbaro page!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Be safe & God Bless!

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans! (...and Janice, Therese and Lynn!)

Glenda Jo - My condolences on Piggy Ziggy. All creatures great and small nestle in our hearts forever.

As someone posted last evening, my Mac keeps me safely away from the marestare cams but I love reading all the updates and thanks to Mary L. we can see the snapshots she shares. Some very endearing photos!

Off to start my day in breezy, nippy Maine.

Hello Therese, Marg and Lynn

Therese - I echo what you've so said so beautifully. Marg - thanks for posting about "Piggy Ziggy". I didn't know.

Glendo Jo,

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. We had 5 of them years ago when our kids were young and they were delightful pets. I remember how heartbreaking it was when they passed on. Too bad they have such a short life span.

Have a great day everyone. I'm heading to the farm.

Good morning Alex. Thanks for all you do.

Good morning FOB's. It's the dawn of a new day. Positive Vibes to all.

Barbaro's candles at 3480. At the number one spot. Nothing new to him though.

Have a great day.

Good Morning, FOB's!

###
Will be leaving for the Horse Expo in just a few minutes. LIssa, I'm 5'4", medium auburn hair, wearing jeans, a light blue blouse and will have a beige hooded jacket...I hope I run into you.

###
Glenda Jo, prayers on the way.

###
Laurie H, another beautiful tuck-in.

###
Mary L and Sally, you two are sources of wonderful horse info while we watch the new moms (and Rosie, we'd LOVE you to join the ranks of the new moms...hint, hint.).

###
Skyler, strength, comfort, Reiki on the way to you. Take care of your horse and the others who had to be evacuated. They must be so scared. Please give them lots of hugs from me.

Good morning all (actually it is now afternoon here)

I'm sorry, Glenda Jo, about Piggy Ziggy.

For everyone absorbed by Rosie at the moment, I was just browsing through a book and came across this old horseman's saying about foaling time:

She bags up her udder a few days before
She waxes and slackens some hours before
She sweats and she fidgets some minutes before
She foals

Have a good weekend everyone

Posted by: Liz (UK) at February 24, 2007 12:56 PM

Liz,
That's a great saying - thanks for posting. Since the camera is down for Rosie this morning, I have no clue if the baby has arrived! Assuming the baby hasn't arrived yet, then the pool is still open for people to get in. So far there is $200 in the pool to be donated to the rescue/charity of the winner's choosing. Check it out here

Thanks for keeping us posted, Alex, we do appreciate it.

Sweet Prince, we miss you. Rock on in the pastures of Heaven. Please know we will get your work here done. We will end horse slaughter in American once and for all. We'll do it in your name.

OOOOOOH, poor Smarty Jones! I'm so glad he is in a facility that is very attentive to all the horses and that his problem was discovered promptly and resolved easily! Smarty, you little devil, you sure make beautiful babies, and I'm glad you'll be "back in action" soon! I check on you regularly and will never forget the thrilling ride you gave us....so close to a Triple Crown! Thanks to all involved for their resolution of his "private" problem...

BARBARO, sweet spirit horse, I love you and miss you as much today as ever! We are going to have a snowstorm on Monday, so I know that means you are running wild, bouncing on the fluffy clouds...and having fun! Please send every here a message that you are having "ACD" because that's the atmosphere we must have here to accomplish everything we need to do in your honor! The peace and harmony you are enjoying in heaven needs to be present on this board...and then great things will happen to DO RIGHT BY BARBARO! Your spirit inspires me in the same way that your physical presence did...I'm an old lady who needs to find a job, and I'm trying hard to BE LIKE BARBARO...courageous and determined! Thank you for gracing my life, even for such a short time...you are forever BARBARO - CHAMPION OF MY HEART!

i just checked on sailor and he is reported to be improving and feisty.
They are not sure if he did what he was supposed to but the report said he seemed much more comfortable.
I am so glad.I have become attached to that baby.

I'll lend you for a little while
My grandest foal, he said.
For you to love while he's alive
And mourn for when he's dead
It may be one or twenty years,
or days or months, you see.
But will you, till I take him back
Take care of him for me?
Don't cry for the horses
that life has set free
A million white horses forever to be
Look up into heaven
You'll see them above
The horses we lost
The horses we loved
Do you hear that soft nicker
Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses
Love the ones that are here.

Another day, another chance to get it right. Let's all stay positive today...we owe this to the Jackson's, to Barbaro's legacy and most of all--after all--to Alex, who has to moderate this group.

Best of luck to all waiting their foals, courage to all with animals who are ill, or who have recently lost a beloved companion animal...and safe rides to all racing this weekend--two and four-footed alike.

Keep sending out that white light, reiki and prayer for success with our war against the slaughter houses...and our funding of research for the sure of laminitis.

(PS the chances to educate are endless--I was at the Vet's yesterday with one of our greyhounds, and the talk wound very easily from greyhound racing to the plight of many horses with no where to go after they race, or who are just plain not wanted. There must have been 6 people in this conversation...and now they know what happens to unwanted horses in America...I wear my Barbaro hat everywhere...you just never know when you'll have the chance to let people in on America's dirty little secret) Be well , be kind to each other, have a fine weekend all: jonna

Does anyone have any news on Rosie? It appears as though the cam is down.

For what it's worth, we foresters continue to be huge advocates of non-engagement when it comes to bickering or sniping. Sure, it'd be nice if it didn't occur, but thus far we haven't found a trouble-maker free ideal world where everybody gets along -- in real life or in cyberspace.
Plus, there are any number of people who visit TWR but don't post, who really don't need to be privy to these, er, interactions.

That said, all efforts to follow bArbaro's direction -- channelled by the inimitable Cheryl Jones -- are most appreciated:

LINDA S, little Sailor does seem to be doing much better. He is a feisty and assertive little guy..He's been imitating Mama, then trying to burst out in a run, kicking, and nursing. He's so cute in his little coat, and so full of himself already! He's beautiful and a good little horse.

I think of the Big Horse every day with love.

Sorry Hawty isn't going to be able to run when you had hoped. I'm sure that is a dissapointment. Hopefully something soon for her.

I guess there will be alot more posting going on here since U.P. closed Barbaro's message board. Now you're really going to have your hands full!

Vicki,
I second that! I thought that late last night, that more people will be coming here. Only good things today! :)

Smarty Jones, you pulled me through a bad time in my life, get well soon and I will get to see you soon!!
Anyone have an address for Jose Santos, besides the Jockey Club one?

Laurie,
Did you notice Shiraz made her bed again?
Love to all, and Good Morning!!
Susan

Posted by: SusanW at February 24, 2007 2:02 PM

Susan W: Shiraz? Do you mean Rosie? Actually, I didn't get a chance to see if she'd made a bed. The cam was only up for maybe ten or fifteen seconds - just long enough for me to see her facing the camera, still huge, still looking so very uncomfortable. Sigh...I was really hoping to see *two* in there this morning...

Laurie,
I couldn't get Rosies' cam up, so I went to Shiraz. Last night she was pawing her straw into the corner, Steph (?) came in to rake it back...this morning I see a big bare spot on the stall floor where she must have been at it again..

Susan

Posted by: SusanW at February 24, 2007 2:14 PM

Yeah, Susan, she (Shiraz) did have a bunch of straw pawed away from the center this morning. Looks like her owner just came in and put it all back in place. Sailor looks a lot stronger this morning. Does anyone know if his digestive problem is resolved?

Laurie

Posted by: Laurie at February 24, 2007 2:16 PM

Good morning, all!

I'm happy that Smarty Jones is OK but sad for Jose Santos. I hope he will progress quickly in his healing.

Odd, but I just saw those robins in my yard again. I don't know what that means. I was listening to Celtic music at the time, too.

Lovely, lovely words...

Guess I wiped myself out last night crying for Big B. Didn't get up until 7:15 this morning! (LOL, yeah I know that's early to most folks, not me though...)

I pray that all will have a blessed and peaceful day, safe travels to all racing, and welcome to all posters from UPenn. Barbaro inspires us all to be better people, to do all we can to make life better for horses and all God's creatures.

Thank you, Alex, for everything.

Good Morning Everyone Started the day with my coffee and paper on my sunny patio in S. Florida until I read the article about the use of dog fur discovered on designer garments at high end reputable outlets. Also shown was a picture of dog pups putting a face on this horrible industrywide deception. Maybe we could find a major journalist to post a story in the national news regarding the current horse slaughter debacle, heaven knows we have a surplus of eye opening pictures. Maybe this would draw more attention to the public then just pleading with out federal politicians which could swell our ranks. Hope everyone has a great day and REMEMBER BARBARO!

*********Anti-slaughter Postcard*********

Hi all-

Edie and I have created an anti slaughter postcard as another method of correspondence with our senators and representatives.
It is eye catching, brief, should get through security quickly, and will be inexpensive to reproduce and mail.

See the ***Anti slaughter postcard*** thread
under Anti Slaughter Issues folder on the forum. If you can't access the forum, send an email to antislaughterlobby@earthlink.net for details on how to download...

We hope you find this useful.
Let's get this legislation passed for Barbaro!

P.S. Any feedback regarding getting postcards printed, cost of printing etc. plus any questions,
please email. Thanks!

REpost: Grandma Bea's address follows

Hello everyone. Hope this sparks your interest. BARBARO TAUGHT ME TO BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. Believe in Barbaro......his work continues.

We currently have $1,429.00 once the plaque is paid for (I even got the trophy store owner to contribute - ALL THE LETTERING IS FREE, HE WILL NOT CHARGE US OVER THE 100 FREE CHARACTERS - I used my charm and he agreed LOL)

Barbaro's $3,000.00 Miracle goes like this. Someone who wants to remain anonymous for now will donate $2,000.00 to our cause for the Laminitis Fund ONLY and ONLY this person says, IF WE RAISE $3,000.00 total. Then they would donate $2,000.00 so we can present NBC with a check for a grand total of: $5,000.00.

I have been told that if we accommplish this and raise the $3,000.00, and this person's bluff is called and they have to hold true to their part of the bargin, and only then can I reveal who the person is donating the $2,000.00.

We need to get $1,571.00 by March 17th, scary, I just looked at the calendar and that is 3 weeks from saturday. do you think we can do it. We raised and donated $3,812.00 to the Barbaro fund in honor of Dr. Richardson's birthday. Do you think we can get $812.00 less than that, $3,000.00 by March 17th.

I made a promise I would not say more than this, other than the bank account number that is holding the funds for this donation - I call it Barbaro's account contains the numbers: 29 and a 1. 1 29, is this a coincidence.
The life of the dead is etched in the memory of the living...

There is a wonderful, beautiful STAR IN THE SKY, who carries the name BARBARO that is FOREVER, shining down on us and will NEVER, EVER go away. We treasure that star. Grandma Bea, Ladee Elizabeth & Remington Barbaro Gobee

CHECKS CAN BE WRITTEN TO BEA GOBEE & SENT TO:

######Hi Laurie,

I sure hope it was not one of the FOB's who called and think they know it all. I think Stephanie has been monotoring the situation with great care. There is always one or two who ruin it for ALL. I wiah Sailor and Shiraz all the best

Posted by: Trish in NC at February 24, 2007 3:05 PM

I'm sad about not seeing Sailor. I watched him being born and it's one of the few things that has made me happy since Barbaro's passing.

Laurie
I ABSOLUTELY agree with your post!
I am amazed at the gall of these people...Where do they come off thinking they know better via a cam picture than the excellent skills of Steph who obviously dearly loves Shiraz and Sailor?
I LOVED watching Sailor......:(

Sue H

I'm sorry to hear that. It's very generous of these owners to allow us to watch.

These are very knowledgeable horse people and if WE are watching the horse this close rest assured that THEY are too.

Hopefully, if they leave the cam in with this new mare the same won't happen again.

I agree Ashley. It made me smile to see Shiraz and Sailor. It's been rough since we lost B. I still have a hard time looking at his pictures, and forget about seeing the video's. I may have to back off the mare stares if this is what happens. I really miss the little guy, he reminded me of Rudolph when he would go leaping across the stall:) He is precious, good luck to Steph. I know I'm truly disgusted with what people have done to ruin this for us.

I'll miss His Cuteness. I'm so glad I got to see him one more time this morning. Did anyone see when he was nursing this morning, he stretched one back leg out as far as he could and he fell over? And I loved how he imitated his mom trying to bob his head up and down. I'm so glad he was feeling better, and I might be crazy, but it looked like he had grown just a little, too. Come on, Rosie, we are so anxious to see your little one now.

Good morning, my beloved Angel Boys. Are you giggling madly up there as you continue to empty your "troff" over my head this morning? I will consider this incessant rain as a gag gift from you!

Good morning, Barbaro Nation. It's a good day to get a lot of positive things done.

RE Shiraz' foal cam:

The matter of the phone calls to the owner was resolved two days ago and all is now well on that front, so no need to worry about it now!

Maybe the barn only has one cam, since they're very expensive, and maybe the cam was moved to the mare about to foal to cover her foaling?

I am very glad to hear Sailor is feeling better. Let's hope Rosie foals soon!

Posted by: Susan E. at February 24, 2007 3:22 PM

Get well soon, Jose Santos. This is sad news indeed.

Alex, thank you for keeping this site open.
Cheer up, March is only a few days away and Hawty will be in the winner's circle before you know it!

Re-post:

O.K. folks, here is the letter. I'm basically asking horse feed companies to help out horse rescues after the slaughter houses close. PLEASE feel free to use it, or change it, but PLEASE SEND IT!

Dear _________________,

I am sure you aware of the anti slaughter bills currently in the House (HR 503) and the Senate (S311) to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. The passage of theses bills would have a huge economic impact on your company.

Although figures vary, if horse slaughter were to end in this country, there would be approximately 35,000-50,000 more horses in the horse community. Just imagine the positive effect this would have on your company!

Our concern is that many of these horses will need to be housed temporarily in horse rescues. They will need to be fed, and they will have other needs as well.

It would be a wonderful gesture for your company to step up to the plate and promise to help these rescues out. By donating a small percentage of your profits or a small amount of your product to non-profit 501 (c) (3) rescues in all states, you could give back to the horse community. I’m sure you are well aware of the great advantages of donating to humane causes. The public always loves it!

Americans love their pets and animals. If you should decide to help these rescues, your company would be highly respected for your efforts. It’s ALL GOOD PRESS!

Please consider this proposition. It would look even better if your company were to come out with some sort of announcement BEFORE THE BILL IS PASSED. GREAT public relations stuff!

Your consideration in this matter would be greatly appreciated and I would be glad to discuss with you how your participation would benefit America’s horses.

[End letter.]

The contact info doesn't always go through when I post, so you can find the info at the forum. It's under horse rescues, "Please send this letter."

You can mail it, or email it. JUST DO IT ! ! !

To All FOB!!

The NERC newsletter thought that it might be interesting to interview some of you FOB for our newsletter and to publish them to our newsletter.

This would be an interview with specific questions but general enough to apply to all FOB.

Something fun to do and a way to get the FOB some of the attentions that we believe are so richly deserved.

The Interview is a typed out series of questions for you to answer. You would simply respond to each question as you care to. The questions are based on your own feelings and thoughts about Barbaro, rescue efforts, and horse slaughter.

If you would like to be interviewed and care to share a bit of yourself with others, please respond to this post!! write to jock4hire@gmail.com

Thanks for your Attention!

Heard from Skyler this morning. All the horses and the barn cat have been evacuated and are safe. Sounds like it was quite an ordeal and the horses were very anxious about being moved suddenly. Let's hope all others in the path of that flooding are safe.

Oh I hope they go back to Shiraz and Sailor soon - I have become so attached to them as well.

Hi Barbaro Nation,

Ahh the NBC website is so very nice..the photo of Dr. R and Barbaro makes me cry once again. One problem the link at the page of social work to the site that is a society does not work.
NBC was my daily routine and sending big B his get well message. I am glad this is here. The message board amazes me with the creativity of people and the work to help animals and people. I actually saw a message this week from a person who lived in the Kimberley and worked with jackaroos and I assume jillaroos as well. Small world this Barbaro Nation. TY Alex! Have yet to read the Secret but somehow i get this feeling Barbaro and the works he has left for us is part of the Secret.

Good Morning Alex, FOB & our hero Barbaro.

Alex, I knew so little about horses & racing before I began reading this thread so many months ago. How much I have learned to appreciate what everyone involved does to care for these beautiful creatures. I am especially appreciative of being able to come here, much because of your dedication.

Harriette - you are surely one of the most compassionate human beings God ever put on this Earth. We are all raised emotionally & spiritually by the touching words you bring to us.

All our FOB - I am so in awe the unity & sharing which takes place among us. Reading about the rescues on the message board reaffirms my faith in the good within all of us. I am in awe of the dedication of all the people who daily devote themselves to e-mailing & faxing about the anti-slaughter bill. And to those who have found creative ways to raise money for the cure for laminitis. We have a wonderful circle of caring people.

Our sweet Barbaro - in his physical life, he was a magnificent, regal horse. In death, his memory & the works done in his name will far exceed the accolades of being the winner of the Kentucky Derby. In such a short life, he has truly touched the hearts of so many people. And it is that binding love which keeps us moving forward, in his name, to honor his life.

And, as we have all come to learn, it seems like everyone involved in Barbaro's life is as exceptional a person, as he was an exceptional horse.

It is a privlidge to be here with all of you.

I just received an e-mail, Subject: PASSING FORWARD from Susan Chiellini, Believe in Barbaro. She received it from Steve Rei, Esq. President, National Equine Rescue Coalition

BLISTER BEETLES HAVE BEEN FOUND IN ALFALFA HAY IN THE BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA AREA-ORIGINATED IN COLORADO.

This hay originated in East Colorado. As of today, 2 horses have died and 7 are being treated at Coosa Valley Equine Clinic. Several of the 7 may not make it. The toxicity of these Beetles is extreme. The 2 that died were fed hay yesterday morning and dead by noon. This hay was sold by a reputable "hay man" who has bought over 150,000 bales of Alfalfa from the "harvester" in Colorado for over 10 years. Very unfortunate incident.

If you are in Alabama and reading this, or if you have purchased hay that may have come from CO inspect your hay for the red striped Beetle.

There's no telling where this hay may have ended up.

A NERC member asked him to pass along the following information on Blister Beetles: They are just as lethal dead, if not more so than the live ones!(and harder to notice, especially if they got chopped in the hayer.)

Mr. Rei's contact info:
http://nationalequinerescuecoalition.com
Tel: 508-478-4077
Fax: 508-986-7088
E-Mail: rescuecoalition@gmail.com

I don't know about hay or these beetles, I just thought I'd pass this along to those of you who might have horses and bought hay recently.

Guess we need to enjoy them while we can.

The phone call did happen this morning...I had been setting up an email for an 11 year old girl who has a tremendous passion for horses with the permission of her mom to see Shiraz and Sailor, Belle and Little Valentine and a few others...and had been following the message board this morning when I saw Stephanies post, she was just in the stall calming Shiraz and her other mares through a blizzard outside, baby Sailor was nursing calmly and Stephanie was in the stall...NOW, I by no means am a horse expert...I have been fortunate though and have owned two in my life and spent much time in my younger years with horses. Horses DO NOT behave like people...THANK GOD, and Stephanie is magical with them...My Goodness, I could only wish that people who know nothing about horses could simply keep quiet and LEARN!!!

Farewell to Northern Baby, a 31 year old son of Northern Dancer, who passed away this past week.

Northern Dancer is the horse that started it all for me. (Boy, does THAT date me!) His small body and huge heart captured my attention when I was a pre-teen, and I've been 'hooked' ever since. In those days, the CBC carried all the big races.

Today, it's very difficult to find horse racing on the TV anymore. My satellite company doesn't carry the racing network, and I have to rely on the Score to get me my 'fix'. Each year we get fewer hours. In fact, I wasn't able to watch the Breeders Cup races for the first time EVER, because they were only carried by a high definition channel. No high definition in our house.:>((.

Safe trip to all the horses and jockeys today and tomorrow, and forever.

No Judy we will not induce Rosie. Our veterinarians said Bobby's Lil Angel will arrive when he/she is ready. As long as her water has not broke (which it has not) then there is nothing to concern ourselves with at this time.

FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN SHIRAZ AND BABY SAILOR

I just went on Steph's message board and although I am very unfamiliar with how they work it appears that in addition to a person calling this morning that Steph is also saying Shiraz is very protective of Sailor and can see other horses from her stall and is having problems with that.

BUT, she did say they may move Shiraz and Sailor into Magic's stall so Shiraz can't see the other horses AND maybe tomorrow or earlier the cam will be on them again.

I hope I read all that right.

Good morning, my friends -

It's nice to see all the regular folks on the board this morning.

All best wishes to those travelling or racing today, four-legged and two-legged. Best to Skyler and the beasties. Our Lady of Perpetual Pregnancy is still...EATING! How edifying!

I have not had time to monitor the board in the last couple days, and reading through briefly see I have missed various losses. I'm so sorry for all. These little ones leave bruises on our hearts.

Harritte - Wonderful posts this morning, as always.

Barb in AZ - Thanks again for the wonderful letter. I am emailing it this morning to several feed companies, and to PetSmart. PetSmart has been terrific in our area, making many donations.

The nephews and nieces in Illinois and Wisconsin are making calls, and are beginning to get a handle on how evasive aides can be! But they are bright kids, (the family, I mean), and tenacious, so keep plugging away.

A reminder to all the Irish that since the Barbaro $3000.00 miracle final date is St. Patrick's Day, we all need to make sure the green (pun intended!) gets to Bea! This is a piece of cake...

In the meantime, thanks to Mr. Brown and Mr. Woolley for continuing to graciously host this site. I can't imagine what I would do without it, and I don't think I am alone. I have cultivated selective deafness (blindness?) vis a vis some of the postings that appear, and count that a small price to pay for the marvelous access we have to information and education, as well as the chance to actually do something for horses everywhere. In addition to that, this is a place of friendship and good will, commodities that are sometimes in short supply in a hard world. So, I am very grateful, and happy to be able to continue to do this work, of which the Boss Hoss and his family approve.

The Rosie Watch is a great educational tool for our friends, as well. The entire staff of my office, (seven women and four men), are now ardently waiting for Rosie to give birth. Perhaps her slowness is part of the great plan! The more they watch, the more chance we have to talk about where she came from. Literally NOT ONE PERSON in the office even knew that there were slaughter plants in the country... So you just hang on and take your time, Rosie-Girl!

Anyway, thanks to all the people who post here, and remind me that the world is not ALL hard, and love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged. Have a Barbaro day, all - courage and kindness.

- Jean

www.nationalequinerescuecoalition.com/

Daryl says that the majority of the people in congress have Sheriff Joe's letter. Someone sent it to Senator Landrieu's office and they have been forwarding it to other offices.

But we need to have the public do the same ! ! !

When do they take the "High Alert" off the Alert Monitor? I'm assuming that one still there is for the Starlight foal that was just born early this morning. I just figured out the monitor, and want to keep it up for Rosie. I've missed all the other births so far, but the foals have been precious to watch. Is low alert for after the water has broken?
Thanks for all the help and knowledge you've been sharing.

Jean...
I think you may be on to something there. How wonderful your office has Rosie addiction now too...LOL
I am also glad you were able to educate them on horse slaughter. Until this site, I did not know it was going on and have been working everyday since to put an end to it. The Barbaro effect in action.
Congratulations to you. Wonderful job.

No our vet does not check her. The last time he saw her was January 11th. There is no need at this time for him to check her out. We have experoemce with foaling and should I have a question I do contact him. Rosie is not distressed AT ALL and she is progressing as she should be. As i have mentioned before our vet is five minutes away, and should we see a problem, we WILL NOT hesitate to contact him. Thus far there are no problems.

No mistakes were made intentionally with Barbaro. In fact, I don't think any mistakes were made at all. Everyone associated with him did everything humanly possible to ensure him a pain free happy life.

I pray all those who worked so hard to give Barbaro the life he deserved will take comfort in the fact that no one could have done any more for him than they did. They all must have loved and respected him a great deal to give as much of themselves both emotionally and physically as they did.

Those people will be grieving for a long time to come. My heart, prayers and respect goes out to them, every one of them.

Shiraz/Sailor Updates

This is the link to the updates on Shiraz and Little Sailor:

When I last checked, the most recent posts were on page 42. It seems Sailor is feeling better today!

Owner at Elements Arabians (Stephanie) did receive more annoying phone calls this AM and has moved the cam to another mare in foal.

She may move the cam back to Shiraz and Sailor, possibly tommorrow. Meanwhile, she will continue to post updates at the link above.

Continued Prayers for All Creatures Great and Small,

Drew

Oops! And I forgot to thank all who have successfully negotiated the Shiraz/Sailor marestare message boards. I am so glad to know both are doing well...

And a big thank you as well to Stephanie Pierce, Socorro, Sally and the maternity ward staff at MHR for all their updates. You are all so KIND! And patient with those of us for whom equine birth remains - (well, for a while anyway!) - a mystery!

Verna - I work at a small business, owned by an Italian family. They are devoted to beasties, and are in a great harrumphing swivet over the issue of horse slaughter now. Thanks for the kind words, but this is a direct result of Barbaro, the Barbaro Nation and most importantly, the horses themselves, who, if people will slow down and pay attention, speak so movingly on their own behalf! Rosie's story is just one of thousands, but I sure was delighted the other day when one gent, a man in his 50s, came over very quietly and asked me, "What happened to her other foal?" I almost started crying on the spot, but instead, showed him pictures of Bobby's Girl, and was able to assure him that she was well, and happily at home. THAT'S education!

Re: Shiraz and Sailor,

Don't know if this has already been posted: there's an early-morning message on their board that says Sailor was so annoyed when his mama wouldn't let him nurse that he turned around and tried to kick her. She relented. Sounds as though he's doing better!

The owner says she may put the cam back up tomorrow. I sure hope so, I miss the little guy.

Jean, Now don't be modest. Take your compliment. Had you not introduced them to Rosie and the issue of HS, they would have never known. So glad to hear they are in a huff about it, thats a good thing, more will be said and more eyes opened... why, all because one person (you) were watching Rosie and the Barbaro Effect spread to them and I am sure they will spread it to others. It has been said here so many times, all it takes is for one person to say something and watch out, the effect takes hold and before you know it, from that one person, many are educated. You did good, as have so many here, we just have to keep plugging away to put an end to it. I love when FOB's post their stories on how something positive has come from what they did. Gives us all hope and determination to keep going.
Thank you for sharing Rosie with your office. It would be nice if all offices would be so kind as to allow it, just imagine the effect that would have. Good job to you and all who are getting the word out. We have great momentum, lets keep it going, I am still sending out the flyer I made up and have had wonderful responses to it. Education, education, education.. the more who know, the more who will speak out.
Great job Barbaro Nation if I haven't said it lately.

I dont have a cam for this cheap webtv. Chief is back in bed asleep on his drugs. he isnt afraid of wind but we havent had a thunderstorm yet so I wont know if the elevil will help him or not. Mirth,

Don’t know if you had a chance to look the website over (maremulligan.com) but it is just huge. You have to join so you can comment and look around. To join you have to agree to certain rules of conduct…….(that would sure cut down a lot of our problems here) and then if you misbehave there are moderators that simply remove the inappropriate message. (Again that would sure help with our problems here.) I took some time to read about Stephanie from Elements. Wow what a smart lady, very pretty too. This is a first class operation! Ever notice in the stalls…..they are cleaning just as soon as a horse makes a deposit on the floor. Hope people take some time and read on the web site. That is a group of top of line people and they have all the latest technology in place to run top of the line sables. Felt a little like a country bumpkin that stumbled into the highbrow end of suburbia.

As I know we have more/different readers on weekends, I would like to take the liberty to repost something from yesterday (and I can't keep up as well anymore, either!) which hit me so strongly I would like to share... this does not strike me as a criticism, just as a very thoughtful comment. I love the foal cams, too, and they are another valuable source of information. (As an aside, I have started a long slide away from breeders to those who work with rescue, specifically with dogs long before horses - I wonder if Miracle Horse Rescue is the ONLY organization NOT in the breeding business on the foal cam sites???).

Here is Mary's post from yesterday:
----------------

My intention has been to only post on Mondays out of love and rememberance. I always felt I was here only to focus on raising the vibration of this board for Barbaro, and to help Barbaro with his healing. I've not been here in a while.

There is a story I read, about a stallion that had twisted intestines. The owner didn't have the money for surgery. The vet left her some drugs for pain, and said to let the horse roll - that without surgery the horse would somehow have to reposition his own internal organs, a long shot at best. The horse stood for hours - all through the night as the "herd" called out to him -not whinnying as much as wailing, almost chanting. When they ran out of steam, he called out to them, and they would start up again. All night the herd continued to neigh in deep, long waves of sound, and the horse grew progressively stronger. In the morning, to everyone's amazement he was OK - he never did roll or lie down. The vet said he had heard of only one other horse that pulled through without surgery. The owner knew an animal communicator, and asked her to ask the stallion if he knew why the other horses were calling to him. He said "in order to perform the miracle, I needed the vibrations of the herd to dispel the human nonsense that it was impossible".

I've said many times Barbaro called each of us to be here - to be the best we were created to be. Barbaro is the best - do you understand what that means? Not only a winner on the track, but the best with his life. He was not passive - he did not suffer fools easily, but he was smart enough to know when he needed help, and he accepted it. I am so sorry in the end human errors were made and he lost his life - but it was his physical life - his spirit is still present and strong as ever. Please believe me - this is true. Follow the example he set with his life.

This board was opened for all things Barbaro. Updates, and horseracing. Then when the "best" started moving in us, it evolved to include horse slaughter, and track safety and reform in the industry. So I am wondering now - what does this board represent? Does every member of this board make a contribution to the higher good of the board? I don't mean posting all the time, or even working on specific projects - being a better person is what Barbaro called us to do - doing anything less is not honoring this board or the horse - that is the contribution, all else evolves from being the best we can be.

While watching the cams is distracting and enjoyable in that regard, what does it have to do with Barbaro and his legacy? If we followed every horse the FOB saved that is all this board would be doing. I believe that belongs in the forum, and this board needs to get back to fighting for what Barbaro's short time on this earth brought forth. What was the one thing that stands out? Of all the things he did, what do you think he will be remembered for? Courage, will to live, a warrior horse, a warrior spirit - to raise awareness for the spirit of the horse. To "dispel the human nonsense". Seek out the areas where the spirit of the horse is not being honored or recognized. That means improving the horseracing industry to honor and respect the horses upon whose backs millions are made. To bring about better conditions, on and off the track - to protect them from slaughter, and give them a safe haven after they retire. To see them as the magnificent beings that they are.

If each of us does our best, and keeps the vibration of this board, Barbaro's board, up - then the horses will be helped. If we loose focus, or focus on our egos, then they will not be served - for that matter, no one will be served.

Love, Light and Protection for The Spirit of The Horse

For those of you wanting a positive vibration to end every day - or to start it! - you can do very little better than visiting the forum site, "Thoroughbreds Need Help ASAP" under the Horse Rescue folder. These thoroughbreds as well as several beautiful mules (you won't believe Delilah Caroline!) were rescued from a NY feed lot several months ago, and this is the ongoing daily dairy of their journey. Each day's post is accompanied by spectacular photographs of their new lives in northern Florida, a beautiful spot right out of paradise. Today there is even a gorgeous photo of the resident hawk, Adeline.

For a bird's eye view of how life can be changed, with a little bit of humor, philosophy, horse and ranch husbandry as well as dog doings thrown in, you cannot go wrong. For me, reading Andrea's posts is like dessert for my day.

It was a fantastic work."

Alex - thanks again for the wonderful morning updates, always with such pertinent and compelling information, and filling us in on the start of your day at Fair Hill. But there's one phrase I didn't understand - what does "propped" mean in that context, that Grandma would have propped [if the rider had come off right in front of her]?

###########
Today's close call for Ramon Dominquez when he lost the irons, but not his seat, per Alex's description, reminded me of one of my most memorable riding experiences, one that absolutely changed my life - an "epiphany" I think it's called. I was already an experienced rider, but had never jumped. In the mid 70's in my mid 30's I was taking my first ever jumping lessons - on my first "adult" horse, a "made" former school horse I had just bought (from the infamous Richard Bailey); that horse (my horse of a lifetime, Sonny) knew how to take care of students like me and knew on his own exactly when to take off for each jump. In a lesson, going over a 3-jump in-and-out combination (not very high, but still a challenge to me at the time) - I lost one stirrup. I was in 2-point position at the time, in the process of going over/through the combination - and when I lost that stirrup, I was thrilled and amazed to find I did not lose my balance, and we completed the combination. The savvy teacher then had me take the rest of the lesson without stirrups. From that moment on, I realized I was not "stirrup dependent" and became a confirmed bareback rider. CJ

I thought you were the only non-breeding facility on the Mare Care website. Thank you for your commentary above the cam... this is one more example of the force for good, the legacy of Barbaro. Maybe this will be another way to raise awareness and hopefully encourage adoptions to allow more rescues - and the circle continues...

And the name of your facility says it all - it definitely stands out on the page at Mare Stare.

Hugs to Rosie, if and when she can tolerate them again! She's certainly surrounded by a big blanket of well wishes.

As I said to Jean earlier. I love to hear about how our efforts on the issues are making a difference. I went over to the DB to see how my Anti HS flier was doing and here is a response I got to it.

This is VERY good, Verna. I have never seen a flier that shows a horse that was euthanized in a truly humane manner versus a horse that was brutally slaughtered. The pro-slaughter advocates claim they provide "humane" euthanasia but the picture of the horse at the slaughter house proves them wrong in such a clear and graphic way that no one could argue with it!!

I also like the fact sheet's clear and simple explanation of what a kill buyer is and how they obtain horses and the fact that the overwhelming majority of the horses they buy are in good condition. These are the kinds of facts that so many people don't know and need to be educated about. Great Job!! I hope lots of people use your flier because you worked very hard on it and it shows!!

For those of you who would like to us it or just take a look it is under "anti horse slaughter folder" "faxes & fliers" post # 31.
Please feel free to use it if you like it. The horses mentioned (pictured) are still alive in the flier. Their death is in print form, just to provide there are differences in the way horses are treated at the end of their life. So you don't have to worry about it being to graphic.
Thanks for everyones input. I felt the need for this and put it together so it could be put out, whether by email, fax or printed as a flier.
I have sent it out and received great feed back.

Thanks to all FOB's for all your hard work on all the important issues that we are working so hard on.

COMMENTS if I may...
Some comments and observations from someone who has been here and seen the good the bad and the ugly of this board. (and just because I'm an "orginal" FOB doesn't make me not like any newbies. WELCOME TO ALL!!) But I feel I can comment with some knowledge....but remember, this is just MY opinion.
This message board was established originaly for reporting on Tim Woolley racing and then later added the purpose of reporting on Barbaro. Along the way other issues came to light: horse slaughter, rescuing horses, lots of training and racing aspects. And lately birthing. The mare cams may have nothing to do with Barbaro directly but it is our love for horses that has brought us all together here and made us all aware of many different aspects of horses.
I think this board would move along smoothly if a few things occur:
1.Ignore and scoll past what you don't want to read about.
2.Post NOTHING negative unless it has a POSITIVE linked to it.
3.REALIZE that we are all very different people. 4.Agree to disagree, in a kind way. It can be done.
5. Take any heated or major controversial issues to the discussion boards. That's why they are there. Take ANY discussions there that you may want...they allow for much more interaction than the main board.
Mary S., I respectfully disagree that there is no room for witnessing the foaling on this board. And I do so congenially. I respect your opinion,I hope you will respect mine, too.
AND before anyone might get upset, just remember, these are ALL just MY opinion that I wanted to share because I love the friends I have made here and I love ALL the information and education I have recieved here.

ALL of this because of a horse named Barbaro.
For Barbaro and the Jackson's and Alex Brown, I will always be greatful. Always.
Thanks,
Nancy in Va Beach :)

Welcome to all new readers, especially those referred from NBC.

We share your love for Barbaro, and miss him very much.

Since this is the weekend, there will not be as much posted on the campaign to end horse slaughter, but if you read this comments section during the week, you will find posts from Debra WI and Shelley A, who are our board leaders on this issue. They are in constant communication with the national anti-slaughter leadership, and they keep us informed on the most useful things we can do, at the grassroots level, to abolish horse slaughter nationwide. We all hope you will join us in this important work if you are new to the issue -- and that you will share your expertise with us if you have been working against slaughter all along.

Fellow FOBs:

I see that Alex has an arrangement for royalties from Barbaro books purchased through his site to go to horse charities.

I have a similar arrangement with zazzle.com. When Barbaro products that I designed (GlendaJo) are purchased, a royalty will go to horse rescue (through me).

If you have any questions on how this works, please email me.

Topics covered by the designs include Anti-Slaughter, Funding Laminitis Research, the Barbaro Effect, FOBs "Paying It Forward", and much more.

If you have design ideas that you would like me to explore, please either post here or email me and I will do what I can to get the design you want added to my line.

Thanks,

Glenda Jo O'Brien

P.S. Special thanks to Rosemary, Nancy, and Laurie.

P.P.S. As so many of you have done, I will re-post this during the week so that everyone who might be interested gets a chance to see it.

Hi, Nancy. I might just add to your post for our new FOBs, that the interest in the Rosie mare cam is because she is a Friends of Barbaro rescue so there is a huge interest in her well being as well as the birth of her foal. She was pregnant with this foal when she was rescued.

We are all looking for a happy ending with good health for Rosie and her baby - if she ever delivers!

Those foals we are watching today are the ones that will be no longer in peril once the Horse Protection act becomes law.

Learning about ALL aspects of horses is good. TB's were once foals too, so now we can better understand what goes on.

I am glad MHR has a cam for Rosie.. We helped saved her and the others and now her foal will be born, forever safe from harm...

Thanks Barb, Jean, Vicki and Maribel. I always hesitate to post my opinion but just felt the need to today.
And Vicki, good reminder on who Rosie is, anyone new coming in would be lost!!
May she have her new baby SOON and may EVERYTHING go well! I really need to get stuff done around the house but the cam watching is getting in the way...but that's just me being selfish!!!!
