Barbaro Updates: 216

updates are now here.

Update 1528: The weather system has moved in, now to wait and see how much snow / ice we get.

A nice survey of the state of implementations of synthetic racetracks in the US: Synthetic racetracks gaining converts, Golden Gate Fields set to make change to safer surface. Golden Gate Fields will be the first US track to adopt the Tapeta surface that we use at Fair Hill.

Brother Derek is going to have some time off: Brother Derek Out of Big 'Cap With Ankle Chip.

Update 1527: The weather at Fair Hill seemed fine this morning, although we are expecting an icestorm this afternoon through tomorrow. Given the pending weather I decided to get on Hawty Creek today and give her a good gallop, she galloped a mile and a half on the Tapeta track and went well. The track seems in great shape, although I am sure it will take a beating with this weather system coming in. I also rode Chesapeake City Slew for Tim, Tim was on Quick Quest. They were to breeze a quarter. Both went very well. Slew just picked his head up a little bit going into the work, but once we got going he levelled out very well and really stretched out. A nice work.

Laurel has already canceled racing today in anticipation of the bad weather moving in: Laurel Cancels Sunday's Live Card.

Update 1526: Aqueduct has now closed the doors on Fair Hill: NYRA bans some shippers to prevent herpesvirus. That makes three tracks at this point I think (Penn National and Charles Town). We had to deal with a quarantine last year and it was a very tense time for everyone. Here is an excerpt:

The restrictions were adopted after a mare that had been treated at the Marion duPont Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Va., had to be put down on a Virginia farm due to equine herpesvirus, said Dr. Anthony Verderosa, NYRA's chief examining veterinarian.

"There's now a lot of potential exposures all over those four states," Verderosa said. "We're just doing this as a precaution to see if anything becomes apparent in those four states in the next week or two, and if it doesn't it'll just fizzle out."

If ever there was a horse race to get people on the edge of their seat it was the Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf Stakes yesterday. A brilliant race won in the end by Jambalaya, who nosed out Honey Ryder: Jambalaya wins spicy Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf Stakes. Basically the fractions for the race were not ridiculously fast so you had about six horses all with a chance inside the sixteenth pole, all running strong. Much more attractive than a field that is strung out at the end with horses that are absolutely exhausted and under the whip.

Comments

Alex you are up early.

Thanks for the update on herpesvirus. I didn't realize that it was that close to OH until I saw your post from the other day. I wonder if it will fizzle out when it hits the artic air. Some feel that the cold sometimes helps to stop the spread, hope so.

Thanks again for your time and dedication, watch out for the ice storm.

Take care,

Grandfather, Great Spirit,

You have been always,
And before you nothing has been.
There is no one to pray to but you.
The star nations all over the heavens are yours,
And yours are the grasses of the earth.
Grandfather, Great Spirit, fill us with the light.
Teach us to walk the soft earth as relatives to all that live.
Help us, for without you we are nothing.

Black Elk (1863-1950)

Heavenly Father,

I am troubled that the Dark One has come to
try to divide and disrupt the good we are trying to do for your animals. Please wrap the Family of Barbaro in your Light, so that no dark spirits can enter .

Anytime good is being done, the Dark One tries to destroy, it has been this way since the serpent
convinced Eve it was okay to eat the fruit that you had forbidden.

Let us not forget why we are here, Lord, let us not engage the Dark One. To engage conversation with evil is only inviting him in. Once he has hold he will twist the truth, turn one against the other and delight in destroying Your goodness.

Help us, Lord. Help us walk in the Light. Listen only to You, keep our eyes only on You, hear only Your words.

Thank you for hearing our prayers. I praise You in all things.

I ask Your protection in the the name of Your
Holy Son.

Amen

Harriette Brillianthawk...very truthfully spoken, beauriful, and wise beyond all our years. Thank you for showing us how.

Have a wonderful Sunday everyone. I have to say, that this is the first weekend since Barbaro has been gone that I didn't sob day and nite. Weekends have been tough for some reason. Time is our great healer. Thank God for all the wonderful, dedicated, and caring people here. Thank God for Alex and Tim who so graciously share their world with us.

ALEX - is the equine herpes virus always a fatal disease?

KEN Z....KEN Z...KEN Z...you must really be a night-owl because I was on really late last night looking for another of your BEAUTIFUL posts...and then this morning discovered I had missed you again! Well, just keep posting your inspiring words to us, and if I miss them at night I'll have to catch up in the morning! Thank you for your gift!

Alex, thank you so much for your continuing updates. I hope the virus issues are resolved quickly for everyone, and especially for the horses.

Gearing up for Monday and a return to working on the legislators to get BARBARO'S BILL passed. Our Barbaro Ambassador Leader, Debra, was supposed to contact the sponsors of the bill and see if we could get it renamed as such. I think if it was renamed that it could carry much more momentum with mainstream America.

We do everything for the horses in loving memory of Barbaro.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I hope and pray that the herpesvirus DOES fizzle out - everywhere. It sounds like a nasty one, with major consequences for all concerned. I admire all who own/care for horses - it's a 365/24/7 job that I know I don't have the resources - financial or physical - to take on at this point in my life.

Does anyone know if the Animal Planet Sporthorse Cup will be be broadcast again? I missed it and forgot to set the VCR. I checked their website and couldn't find another time listed but perhaps they advertised it during the show?

I see many of us are dealing with challenges from the elements again. Please stay safe and come back to us when you can. The Big Bay One needs us all to do his unfinished work.

Prayers to all in need.

GOOD MORNING BARBARO!!

It has been a few days since I have been able to get on but don't think you are not on my mind and in my heart. I don't have access to a computer on a daily basis anymore. I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU so very much. I still can't believe that you are no longer here with us. I know all the FOB's have a very special angel watching over us.

We will continue to fight in your HONOR until all the suffering is over with for your brothers and sisters.

Prayers to all and please remember to tell the people you love that you LOVE THEM....

Love to all.

MARYDEL - Rosie's cam has been down since last night - I think they were having really windy conditions there...but what I REALLY think is that Barbaro unplugged it so the poor girl could give birth with some privacy and decorum - LOL!
Just like you, I'm waiting for news!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at February 25, 2007 1:58 PM

I checked an hour ago for Rosie updates, and there were no messages here. Worried that we'd been shut down! What a relief to see messages this time.

Thank you once again Harriette. Perhaps when you've completed your writings, you could post it on the discussion board, as I really want to read it, but don't feel comfortable posting my email addy here.

YAAAY Jambalaya! I'm happy for this horse I watched running last summer, but sorry for Honey Ryder, as she tried so hard, she's my favorite colour, and she's female against the boys. She would have been my choice if Jambalay hadn't been entered.

Safe trip to all runners and jockeys today, tomorrow and forever.

Good morning all, good morning sweet angel horse. Thanks again Alex for all you do for us and for this site.

We are covered in snow and ice this morning. The weather here in Iowa was terrible yesterday and we have a lot of shoveling and scrapping to do today. Right now it is raining and supposed to change over to snow this afternoon. A real mixed bag.

I miss my angel horse so much. He brought so much light to my day. I am comforted knowing that he is running free and warm and safe.

Happy trails to all. Stay warm today, and enjoy your Sunday.

I hope they show it today. I was out most of yesterday and caught the tail end of it. I only saw three horses and one of them did a perfect run with no faults. I sure would like to see the whole thing. I'm going to do some checking and see if I can find it then I'll post it if I can. If you find it will you post it as well please?

BARBARO, SWEET SPIRIT HORSE...we are expecting snow here tomorrow morning, so I assume that means that all you heavenly equines will be jumping up and down on the clouds and shaking loose the snowflakes - have fun! I miss you so very much, but I am comforted by your perfect healing, and by the fact that you have soooooo many friends at your celestial farm. Give a nicker to Nashua and Chancellor for me, ok? Nashua is your great-great grandpa and he was the first horse I ever loved when I was a little girl, and Chancellor was an awesome police horse -truly a public servant! Thank you for the joy you brought to my life, if only for a short time..."the ride with you was worth the fall, my friend" and I wouldn't have missed a single minute of knowing and loving you. Now it's time for me to BE LIKE BARBARO...I have to find a job and I'm pretty old, but I will hold you in my heart as my inspiration of courage and determination. Gorgeous creature of God's perfect creation, I will always love you and miss you because you are indeed BARBARO - CHAMPION OF MY HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Linn at February 25, 2007 2:54 PM

Good morning Barbaro, Alex and FoBs everywhere.

Another beautiful post from Harriette. Thank you so much. And I completely agree. If we all just ignore the negative posters, they will go away. (And, just for fun, being ignored will aggravate the bejeebers out of them!) They are just trying to get everyone riled up. Let's not let them. Barbaro stayed positive. We can, too.

There are too many good people out there trying to carry on in our big boy's memory. Let's keep it up, without the negative.

Good Sunday to all.

Maid M is forcing me to write this: You're a late November Scorpio, right? If so, you are not, repeat not too old. Your (larger) challenge is to find a situation that both satisfies your (secret)creative ambitions and pays the bill...so when you're being like Barbaro, make sure that you're looking in the right places...cuz seek and you absolutely will find.

Good Sunday, and repost from yesterday:
We foresters continue to be huge advocates of non-engagement when it comes to bickering or sniping. Sure, it'd be nice if it didn't occur, but thus far we haven't found a trouble-maker free ideal world where everybody gets along -- in real life or in cyberspace.

Plus, there are any number of people who visit TWR but don't post, who really don't need to be privy to these, er, interactions.

That said, all efforts to follow bArbaro's direction -- channelled by the inimitable Cheryl Jones -- are most appreciated:

Hi, Linn. The poor little guy has big hooves to fill without Barbaro's name but that is a lovely name. I had submitted names like.... On the Wings of Love, On My Own, All By Myself, Shining Down, Wings of Greatness, etc.

Have a great day. We're (Illinois) digging out from yet another snow/ice storm. When is this winter going to stop. Argh.

I've been watching Shiraz this morning also. Sailor maybe being a little pest about wanting to nurse. I haven't watched them long enough to figure it out. What I will say is Elements sees to be a really well monitored stable. Stephanie is always coming and going. Watch for a while I am pretty sure someone will be in Shiraz stall to check on them. Sailor is still doing his little dance with the front feet. So it could be he just wants to nurse for comfort. His little intestines and poop shoot isn't working quite right yet.

Waiting for a Rosie update, enjoying seeing Shiraz and Sailor once again. He just gets cuter and fiestier every day. Has anyone heard from Mary L? Here in Columbus, we got off easy...some freezing rain late last night, but temps almost 40 by 7am when I got up. A few small branches down, but nothing serious. Sun is shining now, and I'm hoping to get a short run/walk in before the rain resumes later today.

Off to hit the yoga mat. Hope everyone is avoiding the ice and stays warm and safe!

Good morning, my beloved Angel Boys. Sounds like you and your many cohorts had quite the party all yesterday and last night, dumping "troffs" full of precipitation all over your frens down here.

Good morning, Barbaro Nation. Let's stand together today and make this day our finest yet.

Alex or anyone with DRF access, I can't get to the quarantine article. I am saddened about the mare who died and would like to know her name if it was published. Somehow, having a name is always important to me. I hope this virus gets contained fast and does not threaten any more horses.

I would like to peek in on Sailor, the cute liddlehorseinacote (thanks, Christine!). Which farm is he at?

Just read on Bloodhorse, while viewing Derby favorites, that NoBiz and our boy Barbaro share the same bday of Jan 29th, different year, but still very interesting. Perhaps a good omen for Nobiz, who has tons of talent.

Still don't know if I can watch the Derby...gave up horseracing (no one take offense here) after the Breeders Cup last year. I realized I love horses more than horse races. But I find myself so interested and excited about all the Derby prospects. They are all so talented and beautiful. Maybe I will watch the replay, given there are not injuries or breakdowns....I just can't bear to see another breakdown.

I AM REPOSTING WITH ADDRESS:

Hello everyone. Hope this sparks your interest. BARBARO TAUGHT ME TO BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. Believe in Barbaro......his work continues.

We currently have $1,429.00 once the plaque is paid for (I even got the trophy store owner to contribute - ALL THE LETTERING IS FREE, HE WILL NOT CHARGE US OVER THE 100 FREE CHARACTERS - I used my charm and he agreed LOL)

Barbaro's $3,000.00 Miracle goes like this. Someone who wants to remain anonymous for now will donate $2,000.00 to our cause for the Laminitis Fund ONLY and ONLY this person says, IF WE RAISE $3,000.00 total. Then they would donate $2,000.00 so we can present NBC with a check for a grand total of: $5,000.00.

I have been told that if we accommplish this and raise the $3,000.00, and this person's bluff is called and they have to hold true to their part of the bargin, and only then can I reveal who the person is donating the $2,000.00.

We need to get $1,571.00 by March 17th, scary, I just looked at the calendar and that is 3 weeks from saturday. do you think we can do it. We raised and donated $3,812.00 to the Barbaro fund in honor of Dr. Richardson's birthday. Do you think we can get $812.00 less than that, $3,000.00 by March 17th.

I made a promise I would not say more than this, other than the bank account number that is holding the funds for this donation - I call it Barbaro's account contains the numbers: 29 and a 1. 1 29, is this a coincidence.
The life of the dead is etched in the memory of the living...

There is a wonderful, beautiful STAR IN THE SKY, who carries the name BARBARO that is FOREVER, shining down on us and will NEVER, EVER go away. We treasure that star. Grandma Bea, Ladee Elizabeth & Remington Barbaro Gobee

Yes, it means that the jockey's feet came out of the stirrups. It is hard to find them again but not impossible for an experienced jockey.

Hi Shelly A. Well....that would NOT be me....sounds pretty scarey to me....considering I've been on horseback exactly twice in my life...once for about 10 seconds as a little girl, the horse was not used to a child on her back and sadly, it was the last time I was ever allowed on...and then many years ago, we rented horses at a mountain retreat...THAT was fun!!!:)I even 'galloped' a little bit! Mostly on the way back to the resort, 'cause the horse knew food would be waiting.......LOL! Those resort horses have to be really a special personality I think, to put up with inexperienced riders like myself!

Have a great day, Shelly A., and ALL FOB's....

Judy - on one of the mare stare sites - Woodstock Paints - one of the horses was like 15 days overdue and Sippa the most recent was like 24 days overdue. As with Rosie - she was bred in the pasture so the date of conception is an approximate date - she may not be as overdue as we think. She will have this baby when she is ready - now me - I want her to have it NOW!!! But we just need to be more patient - yikes - its making me a wreck - LOL

Barbaro is now effecting how houses are decorated!

Today is my wedding anniversary. To celebrate, my husband and I spent the day togther shopping and picking out a few gifts. My choice? All horse things. My husband was rolling his eyes. I want to turn our den into Barbaro's room. I got a beautiful throw pillow with a bay colt neddlepointed on it, and two brozen horse head bookends. These will go beautifully with the Barbaro pictures I want to frame. The woman at the store told me equestrian is the newest rage in interior design! I told her about Barbaro. She said she thought he had an impact on this trend because people remembered how much they loved horses. See, Barbaro is effecting everything.

I forgot to tell you last night how sorry I am for the loss of your beloved pet. I am so sad for you during this time. I hope you will be able to come here and feel the surrounding support we all have for you. I hope you have family & friends near you for comfort. Take care, and come tell us about your hairy baby when you feel like talking, sweetheart. We all pray for you to be at peace.

I just watched the replay of Jambalya's race on NTRA. Now that's an exciting race!

I can't believe that Rosie is still holding onto that baby! Which means I need to shamelessly promote the pool I started to guess the date and time of the baby's arrival. There's still time to get into the pool! And it's for a good cause!

MJ - a friend of mine is turning one of the spare bedrooms into a Cowgirl room - all things horsie - posters, bedspread - really cool - can't wait until it is done.

Me - I have a print of Barbaro hanging in my living room - would like to get another one - maybe some horsie knicknacks! A horsie throw for the sofa, etc. Not sure how far I want to go!

Rosie IS a crab this morning! We have to repair a panel this morning due to the result of her crabbiness. She is not usually cranky with Misty at all, but goodness she is today. She even gave me the stink eye this morning as fair warning, that she was gonna be a crab. Spending 24/7 with all of the horses here at MHR gives you a great insight of the various personalities, and this is quite unusual for her. I will probably be removing her tail wrap cause she just does not leave them in, however I will leave her tail braided. For those who may not know but the tail wrap is utilized to keep the tail from becoming messy during birthing. Should Rosie get messy, I will clean her up, but it seems the wrap is agitating her this morning and it is just hanging there.

Thanks, I'm trying to finish packing so I can get out of here. I need to head for the airport in about an hour. I don't know that I'll get an email sent to our mutual friend before I leave. (but let them know that I'm serious) I wasn't planning on having to spend an hour shoveling today. Although, I have no excuse for procrastinating on the packing and laundry.

I was hoping that maybe I would see Rosie's baby before I left. I'll guess I'll have to sneak a peek daily when I'm gone.

Thanks for all your help.

### Laurie and Leslie enjoy the MN weather. I actually like snow, so I can't believe I'm leaving when we finally get some to play in.

*********Anti-slaughter Postcard*********

Hi all-

Edie and I have created an anti slaughter postcard as another method of correspondence with our senators and representatives.
It is eye catching, brief, should get through security quickly, and will be inexpensive to reproduce and mail.

See the ***Anti slaughter postcard*** thread
under Anti Slaughter Issues folder on the forum. If you can't access the forum, send an email to antislaughterlobby@earthlink.net for details on how to download...

We hope you find this useful.
Let's get this legislation passed for Barbaro!

P.S. Any feedback regarding getting postcards printed, cost of printing etc. plus any questions,
please email. Thanks!

MJ, I do interior design consulting on a part time basis, and for years my house has been horsey, not tack room horsey,(save that forthe barn). Our masterbedroom has a custom made duvet cover in a Winterhur Museum material that has Gladiateur II in a cartouche and racing scenes of the 1850 throughout, matching envelope pillow shams. French mirrors, antique race horse prints, framed in black, my bathroom is upholstered in Waverly Polo (which is not polo, but has antique race horse pictures on it) . Bronze race horse & jockey on the coffee table with a few of Ed. Bowens books underneath. Have never got tired of adding horses and dogs to my rooms and I'm (ouch) 63. Your room will look great! Also sounds like you got a good guy.
I live on the West Coast so always 3 to 4 hours late (eastern time) posting on this, but thankyou Harriet Brillianthawk for the beautiful poems, songs you post.

Dear FOBs,

The terrible, and dangerously infectious outbreak of equine-herpesvirus is another good reason to stop the transport of slaughter-bound horses from state to state.

It might be a very good idea to add this urgent and timely information to our e-mails and phone calls as we work to persuade our legislative representatives to put an end to the horse-slaughter industry, here in America.

Horses, loaded into the slaughterhouse-bound trucks are most likely not health screened, and the feedlot stock, certainly not inspected. These horses are destined to become red-meat for human consumption.

With the sheer numbers of horses, being sent great distances, across state lines, from unknown sources, and often with an unknown amount of time spent in close quarters in feed lots, the danger of the infection spreading is alarmingly high.

Ban the transport! The USDA, should quarrantine all horse-carrying-slaughterhouse-bound transport trucks NOW!

MJ.
I have always had a "hunt club theme" keeping room, but each year I add more. I have "Baker Blanket" wallpaper with fox hunt boarders. I have a table Christmas tree that I keep up all year because it is all horses and Jack Russell Terriers. The room is gradually becoming a shrine to Seabiscuit, Secretariat, Ruffian and now Barbaro. The centerpiece is the saddle, autographed by Gary Stevens and Chris McCarron that was worn by "Seabiscuit" in the match race with War Admiral. (movie race) There is not enough room for all the horsey things I have collected. It is now moving into the adjoining atrium room. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I am so glad that horse themes are becoming fashionable in interior design, I guess I was just ahead of the trend.LOL.

Re Rosie - this coming weekend is a Full Moon - I don't know if there are any "official" studies about birth rates rising during a Full Moon, but I've talked to some nurses who swear by this...I just want a happy, healthy baby and mom. Have also been watching Shiraz and Sailor and Sailor is just adorable in his blanket...

Here's another from my anecdotage, triggered by the above post: When my old Joe (QH; RIP) had an upper respiratory infection, we had to monitor his temp closely. The barn manager told me that she would position him with his butt facing the window so there was enough light for her to see to get the thermometer into him in the stall; and after a couple of times, when he would see her coming with the thermometer, he would get into position on his own. What a good boy! (Wow, how I miss that critter. Got him in 1982 and he lived until 1995, just short of reaching 27.)

#######
Stephanie - thanks for the updates and explanations. We truly appreciate it - as we do the opportunity to have a window into your world at MHR. We are all, as the tabloids say, infanticipating. You and your helpers are truly angels for the horses.

And an eclipse to boot! If there aren't "official" studies, it's only because nobody bothered. But you're absolutely correct, more babies (human, equine, feline, canine, you name it-ine) are born during Full Moon's than other times.
Many years ago, Maid M was staggered to discover that airlines (yes, as in American, United, Delta, i.e. major carriers!!) keep track of both Full Moons and Mercury Retrogrades...the first because passengers were significantly more tetchy and the second for, er, obvious reasons...

Re full moons...I worked at a psychiatric hospital for ten years. The number of clients coming into emergency services always spiked in the days immediately preceding and following a full moon. We had clincians who monitored the lunar cycle so they could *avoid* scheduling themselves for ES, and those brave souls who loved working during the full moon and volunteered for those nights.

And I remember my mother always saying more babies are born "when the moon changes".

Hopefully, most of all for Rosie, tonight will be the night!

re Post by Nancy in CT at February 25, 2007 7:08 PM, responding to mine about how my Joe would position himself to assist the caregiver -

Yes, he was really something special. Once he had a deep infection in a hock that I had to tread with Ringers (salt) solution; he would stand and let me do it. Very cooperative fella. (He had been with one very loving owner from 6 months old until I got him at 14; was very very sweet.) Joe had some benign tumors that prevented use of a bridle and saddle and eventually even a bareback pad; we used to ride him with a hack and only a towel to keep the rider's pants dry. One of my pals who used to ride him reported that whenever he was about to lose his seat, that horse would "scoop me up" is what he said; Joe would wriggle around so as not to lose the rider. And when I broke my back (L3, '93) in a fall out on the trail, and refused to lose consciousness because I had to hang onto the reins, that horse literally froze - stood like a statue for many minutes until I felt ready to try to rise; and when I finally got up the pain was so intense I collapsed in a heap. At that point Joe no longer stood still; he went into action to force me to get up! I still can't get over it; until I stirred he stood like the proverbial statue, but the minute I tried to get up, from that point on he was nuzzling and bumping me with his head until I finally got up and walked him out of the woods. (Somebody had to do it; couldn't let him loose, there was a busy road between where we were and his barn.) Yes, I walked about a half mile with the broken back; didn't know a person could do that. Because I had done that I just assumed I was badly bruised and didn't go to a doc until the 10th day after the fall, at which time the docs were amazed and showing eachother the X-rays, calling me their ambulatory broken back.) That incident is one of the many many reasons I insist on very long split reins for trailriding.

#######
btw - Skyler's horse (OTTB) who thankfully along with his barnmates was successfully evacuated recently from I think it was a flooding situation, is also named Joe. Hugs to Skyler and Joe.

### FOB's and Alex...

We are all special in our own way as Barbaro was.

"I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court;
indeed, I do not even judge myself." (I Corinthians 4:3)

Today's Word

You are anointed to be the person God has called you to be! The
enemy may try to make you think you have to conform to the opinions
of others, but if you are secure in who God made you, you can resist
those outside demands and pressures that try to mold you into
something you're not. Don't rely on the opinions and approval of
others. Don't let them steal your unique creativity. God made each
of us with a different purpose. As you continue to grow in your
relationship with the Lord, through prayer, worship, and fellowship,
you will gain confidence in the Lord that will free you from the
opinions of man, and allow you to be who God called you to be!

A Prayer for Today

God, I want to live for your approval alone. I need to feel your
strength when I feel tempted to change who I am to conform to this
world. Please help me to remember that You love me just the way I
am! In Jesus' name - Amen.

Blessings to each and every one of you on this board. Nina J

One more funny thing about walking Joe out of the woods that day - when we finally got to the road I stood there on the shoulder, holding him and trying to flag down a car to send them for help to our barn which was just down the road and around the corner; but all the cars kept on going by and the people in the cars were waving and yelling greetings. Finally a guy going by on a motorcycle realized something was wrong and pulled up alongside us; I explained what was going on and he went to the barn and sent back help. Would you believe, Joe's former dad had a motorcycle and Joe was totally used to it so didn't flinch when the bike pulled up by us. The only thing he was afraid of, was geese - of which his former people had warned me. CJ

Happy Sunday, Everyone

Thanks Alex, as always. Glad you were able to get a good workout for Miss Hawty Creek before the weather turned bad. I'm so sorry about the quarantine. Otherlyn brought up a great issue. The USDA should start lowering the boom on transporting. If the tracks are going to take a stand, as has the shows and various other interstate events, so should the USDA. We could use their help, for sure.

Question for you, Alex. Was talking to friends yesterday and this came up. It was kind of funny, but there are two poles of opinion on the pronounciation of "Tapeta". Is is "Tapeta" as in "taffeta" (if you know what that is)or maybe like "tappita tappita tappita" of little hooves, or is it Ta-PEET-a? We all had a giggle over that discussion

##
Stephanie, thank you so much for all you do. I do so hope that Miss Rosie will foal soon. She looked miserable when I last checked. Can't get the cam up today for some reason.

##
Christine yes indeed, little Sailor is an adorable "liddlehorsssessseinnacote" And I'm so glad to know he's actually pooping today. Sometimes it's hard to get things er..going, because when foals are nursing, there's not a lot of howyousay....poop-building material in their intestines. I've often wondered how wild horses manage as they don't have anone to intervene and help the foals eliminate. I wonder if there might be something that could be added to mares' feed in the days just prior to foaling that would help to push the gunk along. Haven't seen that cam either, but I read earlier that little Sailor's still dancing to some extent. Poor little guy. He is so adorable. Always have had a soft spot for those lovely Arabians.

###
Harriette..thank you for your beautiful prayer this morning. Martita Goshen also says "into the Light". Let us follow our muses.

Barbaro, I dreamed of you. Not the first time, but first time since you crossed over. An early morning dream, as I awakened to hear birds singing, for the first time this year. They were tiny little sparrows. God's special little songburbs.

In the dream, the grass was so green. I don't know where it was. I've not seen Hevvin. The sky was so blue, the clouds small and thin, moving quickly. The sun was warm. I could hear leaves in the trees rustling gently in the breeze. I could hear the burbs.

You were galloping soooooooooooooooo fast. Loving every step. Your hooves barely touched the grass. You caught sight of me and slowed, then walked toward me. It was as though I had imagined so many time, had I been able to meet you, touch you, smell you, kiss your velvet nodes, tickle "that" spot under your right ear...You stopped just a foot or so away from me. Those eyes. Unblinking, so wise, so deep. I heard soft rumbling from deep in your chest. Not quite a whinny, not quite a nicker. Very soft. Your lips twitched, I reached out to rub your nose, and pressed my face into your neck. I felt the rumbling then, and you smelled so sweet.

My faith is infinite. I've known in my heart since you crossed over that you are now whole and free. In my dream I HEARD it and FELT it. Then in an instant, I realised that the burbs were outside my window. Were you there too? I didn't want to open my eyes, didn't want to lose the image of you, so close, as I've imagined you thousands of times. My eyes opened with the realisation that you will always be with me, with all of us. Always.

I miss you. I love you sooooooooooooooooooo much

Dearest FOBs:
Tomorrow marks the 4th week without our beloved Barbaro. I would like to ask that we all bond together and remember what he always stood for. Our dearest Barbaro in his short life always stood tall, happy to please, never complained and with a great spark in his eyes. Barbaro loved to go outside, here he always demonstrated his curiosity for his different animal friends along the way. With love he would always appreciate the fact that they were not like him. Barbaro was indeed a very special soul. A soul that has brought us all together teaching us that the HEART is what really matters in life.
So my dear FOBs...I ask that tomorrow we all use our heart to say a prayer...to thank God for allowing us to share in the glory of Barbaros memory and to use our heart to continue forward in the passing of the Anti-slaughter bill and the protection of all horses.
May Barbaro always be proud of us, but mainly may we always be proud of our hearts.

BARBARO ALIVE AND WELL IN OUR HEARTS

Harriette. Your words spoke to me today. I could feel them inside. I prayed your prayer. All will be good now. Focused.
Thank you Father for Harriette. She keeps us grounded and focused and points us to You daily. She is the faith in our family. We look for her daily wisdom as we move forward to do Your work in the name of Barbaro. Bless you Harriette.

MaryL, so glad to see you here. Was thinking of you as soon as I woke up. All is good here, just a cold rain. Glad you didn't get hit as hard as others.

We sure did have a good old time last night didn't we. What fun! I haven't cracked up that much in a long time. Dora you kill me. I just know when you write that book, I won't be able to put it down.
When you get back on line, let me know, I'll give ya' my email so we can talk about all those things we have in common, or you can go to the DB and find me. I'm Verna9060 and send me an email that way.
Have fun out there with the animals, oh and your other half too, don't forget him..:)

####
So Rosie is a grump today huh? Hopefully she won't have to wait on the moon, I don't think I can take another week and I'm not the one carrying the foal..LOL Poor girl.

####
Otherlyn, I agree with you 100% about the spread of the virus and hauling horses from state to state. This would be a good reason to recall all those who have not co-sponsored at this time, some fresh material to give them to chew on, since they don't want to hear us with horrific facts that we have already provided. I'm already working it in my head. I want to be able to do it without putting restrictions on "all" horses being hauled. Have to make them see that not all horses are a danger of spreading, but those in the haulers are much higher....Feedback anyone... I don't haul horses, so those of you who do, especially on a regular basis..some feedback on how not to ban "all" horses being hauled, even on a temporary basis. Have to have this pointed directly at those headed for slaughter....need feedback...

Thanks all and have a wonderful Sunday.

Rosemary, Where did you get that saddle? Was it put in a movie memorbilia auction? OOOOOOHHHH I am so envious! Lucky girl! I ordered one of Gary Stevens hardbound books thru amazon.com that he autographed to put in my "library", a couple of weeks later the seller e-mailed me and said he couldn't find it so he refunded pay pal. Double dang.Oh well the one that isn't autographed is just as readable.

Gled to hear that you all have weathered the storm better than expected - I guess it is coming my way now. Up until 2 years ago Bob and I lived on top of a mountain near Scranton PA (that's an East Coast mountain - not like the ones out West!) but the elevation meant that we got slammed whenever there was a storm of any kind, but especially the ice storms. We would prepare by loading up on kerosene for the heaters, fill the tub with water (for toilet flushing), fill all large pots, pan, and bowls with water for drinking and washing, of course round up the oil lamps and candles and flashlights. When the power went out (as it always did) we would drag the mattress into the living room where we all, dogs, cats, birds, and piggies could stay warm from the kerosene heater. Oh, and before the rule was imposed "Do not open the refrigerator or freezer!", Bob would grab a couple of beers and I would grab the ice cream - no point in letting it go to waste, right???

Sometimes there is a particular freedom in knowing you CAN'T go anywhere so you may as well enjoy what you can. (Walking the dogs was a bit of a trick tho....)

Remember: All for one and one for all, after all, we are FOBs, Forever United in the name of our Brave and Beautiful Barbaro.

Glad everyone seems to be okay.

Excellent point about the equine-herpesvirus and transporting horses to slaughter. This is a new (and very valid) point to make when contacting our representatives.

Maybe today is the day, huh Rosie? Stephanie, thank you for the continued updates.

I hope all FOBs in the path of the horrible weather are safe and warm. Please be careful out there.

Prayers of healing and comfort for all feeling the loss of our precious Barbaro, as well as their own loved ones...time WILL heal the wounds.

Barbaro...I miss you more each day, it seems, but I will carry you in my heart forever. I love you sweet boy.

Some disturbing current facts re fatal breakbowns at GGF and Santa Anita [excerpt from article re conversion to synthetic track surfaces, posted by by Lily at February 25, 2007 8:59 PM]

But what about the many lesser horses who are injured in races and euthanized almost on the spot? There were six such cases in the seven-week Golden Gate Fields season that ended Feb. 11, and there have been 10 since Santa Anita's season opened Jan. 26. There also have been countless horses injured in training.

Barbaro, my heart beats for your heart, honey, always and forever! Run with the angels, honey!
Love you so much, Lou Ann

Hi everyone . . . I have been with you all since January 29th, just became quite overwhelmed and could not seem to post through the grief. There was a beautiful and peaceful "message" from Bobbey the next day so I knew he was indeed "home" and completely healed, peaceful and happy on the other side with Lost In the Fog and our many other precious ones, but the loss down here was still so tremendous.
I checked in every day and was so grateful for all the many beautiful tributes, prayers, and memoriams that were posted - I've added so many to my memory album of our journey with Barbaro. The memory album has brought me much solace.

But even through the darkest hours, this "forever FOB" kept a vigil going, the votives flickering, litanies offered . . . my heart did go to Heaven with Barbaro but I'm hanging in there . . .

Last week something inside said we must stay united, we must keep Barbaro's legacy proud and united. When we refer folks to the TWR site to find solace, to learn, to keep updated with the move to close down the SH's now and forever, they need to see the love, dedication, bonds, prayers and wishes that took the TWR site to its highest moments and held us together through the darkest moments.
We vigiled together regularly while Barbaro was still with us . . . and now though Barbaro is up there in Heaven with our many other precious ones, and yes up there racing with his best buddies, and letting Felix nap snuggled up with him, would it be possible to do a group vigil this week to honor him? We don't have a 29th this month but perhaps Tuesday or Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM like we did before? Light up the night . . .whatever you feel comfortable doing, a prayer, a candle, a favorite poem, your own special words, put out some peppermints, just a united effort to honor Barbaro who brought us here in the first place . . .
I continue to vigil every day but it would be really special to do it together again. . .
And I saw lots of new posters, too, yeah!! Very nice to see!

Maybe we should let Alex select the date and make it official??? Alex . . . a 7 PM vigil in honor of Barbaro . . .

And please hug all your four-legged FOBs for me, too, as you know I love them all.
And for Miss Rosie and Chunky the Pony, I continue the prayers to St. Gerard, Patron of Expectant Mothers, for your safe deliveries!! And for (is it) Shiraz and little Sailor? And, of course, Barbaro's Mom and Dad!

And hugs and prayers to all two-legged and four-legged FOBs in need. . .

Peace and love to all,
FOB forever, Lou Ann in Pennsylvania

LOU ANN - thank you so much for your kind words...and for remembering my furbabies, too! I am scared to death because, despite the law, age discrimination DOES exist...it's just shrouded in other "excuses." I'm taking some time for myself to do some much needed projects...actually I'm radically downsizing all the "stuff" in my little apartment...I don't need all this stuff and so some non-profit tag sale might as well benefit...and also, should it happen that I need to move for a new job, there will be less to move! So, indeed, there is a method to my madness! However, by the first of April I need to do some serious looking because my severance pay runs out the 2nd week of August...
But I will try my utmost to BE LIKE BARBARO...courageous and determined!

Rita,

Yes, I got the saddle at a studio auction that was held at Santa Anita race track. The saddle was signed on the spot by both men. True gentlemen both !!! I also have the pants that Toby M. wore when he (Red) greeted Seabiscuit arriving at Ridgewood after his breakdown. That is my favorite scene in the movie. Red on crutches seeing Seabiscuit in bandages, both limping badly. Had to have the pants, don't know how to display them, but had to have them. It is a conversation starter that is for sure. I have all sorts of props from the movie that surround me daily. I love my keeping room !!!

####
Glenda Jo,
Your post reminds me of winters when our power was out and we were all confined to the keeping room where the fireplace is located. Lots of wood, bathtubs of water and "emergency foodstuff" like potato chips, licorice sticks and ice cream kept us centered around the oil lamps. Card playing was never more fun. It wasn't so bad if you were prepared. Thanks for the memories!!

Glenda Jo and Rosemary, re the "emergency foodstuffs" (in my case, they'd include Conn's potato chips and Suzy Qs!). A couple weeks ago, we had a big snowstorm here in Ohio. The night before it was due to hit, I had to run to the grocery and pick up some goodies for a choir social. Big mistake - the place was packed with panicked shoppers. As I stood in the checkout line with my two measly boxes of Valentine cookies, I glanced at the items on the conveyor behind me: 3 gallons of milk, 2 CASES of bottled water, a couple boxes of saltines and ABOUT 20 CANS OF TUNA, SALMON, and SARDINES!!!! I took a quick glance at the person behind me...my goodness, she looked spooked! It was all I could do not to pat her on the back and say, "It's okay...it's just a snowstorm. It's not NUCLEAR WINTER!!!" ROTFL!!!

My thoughts are with you as you begin your new job search. It's not easy at our age, no matter what the law is, but we "mature" people have a lot to offer and I just know you're going to find what you're looking for.

As I am writing this, I am reminded of the night you were so kind as to keep those of us who couldn't watch it informed of the events on Eclipse awards night. It seems so long ago now. Very good points about the transport of horses & equine herpes virus. Does it pose a risk to someone who eats of an infected horse? If it did, that could be helpful to us.

First of all, thank you again Alex and Tim for all you are doing for everyone here. Love to read about your exploits on the track early in the mornings, Alex. One of my favorite movies is Champions with John Hurt--I love the scenes where they are out early with the horses in quarter sheets, doing the gallops on the hills.

Hope the EHV quarantine is lifted soon--we have it out here too--Los Alamitos race track had two barns under quarantine after two horses died from EHV-1. No word about whether it was the neurological strain.

####
Rosie grumpy?? She's only been carrying that foal for what, six, seven years?? (Just ask her, I bet she'd say seven!) Bless her (grumpy, pea-pickin') little heart ;oD

###
How about cutting to the chase with the name for Bobby's little brother and calling him "Bobbys Little Brother"? ;oD

###
I too have stopped watching horse races. Pine Island's death in the Distaff just about did me in--there is a picture from Barbara Livingston's site of Pine Island and her owner--and the owner is kissing her girl on the nose. Breaks my heart. (I did watch some of the International Racing on TVG yesterday morning--steeplechasing from England. Four "casualties" with no mention of what happened to the horses, though I did see one of them crossing the finish line without a jockey. The others?? Who knows? Too painful for me to watch).

Yes, indeed--safety first, safety before ALL things, and a guarantee that every horse has a safe home after his/her/its racing career is over.

Matz had a horse in the third race at Gulfstream, Cindy's Mom, she finished 3rd with Edgar Prado aboard. Apparently she set the pace and then in the stretch gave way.

Marchonin came in 6th in the stakes race. He apparently was unhurried early and into the final turn was checked and never recovered. He had Mark Guidry up.

Alex...Thanks again for the site and information! We really appreciate you!

Debbie...I watched your tribute to the staff at New Bolton and Dr. Richardson...it was difficult to watch and I suspect it will take me a long time to view without tender emotions popping out of me..but I wanted to take this opportunity to commend you on a very heartwarming presentation!

Does anyone know about getting a 2007 calendar both big and purse size with pictures of Barbaro throughout the whole year? I have been surfing but haven't found anything yet. I want to buy one for my house and one to carry around......

ANN (MD)...thanks for your kindness, although I'm crying again thinking about "reporting" to you all live from the Eclipse Awards...and especially thinking that earlier in the day Dr. Richardson, upon receiving his award, said something like he was accepting the award for "a work in progress" because he wouldn't be satisfied until Barbaro walked out of the hospital...
OMG, I miss that Big Boss Horse...but I'm consoled by the fact that things escalated quickly rather than dragging on...and that Doc and the Jacksons were indeed true to their heartfelt promise to Barbaro...

Dear Friends,

Since we lost Barbaro, I had not been able to function at full capacity for quite some time. The grief had been awful. I have kept up on my calls and anti-slaughter work, but there was no joy or depth in anything. I even tried to write about Belle and Barbaro, thinking that would help to divert from the sorrow, but N O T H I N G
came into my spirit until now.

We have been working through this sad time together. Today, I would like to share another story. The cloud is lifting and "She" has finally been able to pierce the sorrow.

I am grateful to you, and to Barbaro, for the privilege of sharing the "life" in these words.

A HAPPY SPRING DAY:

It was the first day of Easter vacation, which always seemed to be a long and leiserly celebration of spring. It was a little glimps of the long lazy days ahead. It was a nod toward summer, and the end of the school year. I had to wait until Easter Monday, before taking the Comstock bus to Grampa's farm, to spend the week, with Grampa, Uncle Ted, and Belle.

In those days, I never had much to pack into the little metal rollerskate case that served as my weekender valise. Just a pair of jeans, a couple cotton tops, a sweatshirt, and a week's worth of socks and undies would suffice. Somehow I managed to get everything into the case, and onto the bus, which stopped, several times a day, across the street from my house, on busy Stocking Ave. I remember that, back then, spring was always warm and sunny right after Easter. As far as good weather was concerned, once Easter came, we were "home free" until November.

Now, in the impatient and "instant" 21st century, that bus trip would seem to take an agonizing eternity, but, those many springs ago, in 1961, I was quite comfortably accustomed to bus travel. You could ride all over the city, to get to anywhere you might need to go, for 15 cents and a dime transfer. I didn't even mind the frequent stops along the way. I would open the window to watch the familiar world go by, and be happy as can be. This was what it took to get to the farm...just a matter of fact.

The bus ads were colorful and informative. I learned that I would enjoy Coke, have my hair styled at Dodgson's Beauty Salon, and get relief with speedy Alka-Seltzer. The lipstick and nail-file/key etched graffiti, on the back of the seat in front of me, and on the pannel under the window, often caught my eye. The messages there were so innocent and benign compared to today's modern explitive-rich angst. Such a pleasant trip, watching the city shrink and the burbs unfold...absorbing "urban-pop Art," (such as it was)...sight-seeing, on my way to the farm.

Not long after the river appeared on the right side of the road, I would gather my stuff and get ready to pull the cord for my stop, for at the intersection of West River Drive, and Pine Island Road, this leg of my journey would soon end. Here I would get off the bus, and begin the mile hike to Grampa's.

I actually looked forward to t
