    Barbaro Updates: 219

    updates are here.

Update 1541: Additional coverage leading up to saturday's Fountain of Youth Stakes, which looks like it is shaping up to be a key early Derby prep: Relaxed Tagg ready for potential spotlight and Adore the Gold just may shine like his daddy.

Ramon Dominguez was back racing today (and was blanked): Dominguez back with eye on title, excerpt:

Dominguez galloped horses last week at the Fair Hill training center and was surprised at how well the knee responded.

"There were no problems whatsoever," Dominguez said. "I was expecting some discomfort but I felt absolutely great."

He also demonstrated some great balance when his horse ducked away from the gate right in front of me and Tim!

Update 1540: Some very interesting racing at Nad al Sheba (Dubai) tomorrow that will feature Discreet Cat, Kentucky Derby hopeful Day Pass and recently acquired sprinter Thor's Echo: Tough challenge awaits Discreet Cat in Burj Nahaar and Discreet Cat in unusual prep.

Update 1539: It felt like a lovely morning this morning to be riding horses at Fair Hill. We had bright sunshine and temperatures above freezing. The track opened at 7 am again this morning. I shedrowed Who's Happy before the track opened. She seems to be well after her race last week. Hawty Creek was my first to the track. She did three turns of the track, galloping about a mile and three quarters. She went well. I then decided to stand her in the gate. She stood perfectly. All appears well except getting her into a race. There is a small chance Philadelphia Park may let us back in, but I am not sure if and when that is decided. They have written an "extra" (race) for her for sunday, so we shall see.

Of the remaining five I rode, four went to the gate. Chesapeake City Slew went with Quick Quest and Tim. We galloped them out of the gate, and they did it very well. I think Slew may have some speed (I am sure QQ does too). Flash was another I galloped out of the gate later in the morning and he flew out, much like Slew did. Anyway, with the better weather and it being gate day there was plenty of action out on the track this morning, and the weather just made it a pleasure.

Update 1538: Real Quiet seems to be making some progress at New Bolton: Champion Real Quiet being treated at New Bolton, excerpt:

"The nuclear scan on Friday showed he was carrying heat on both of his hind feet, but no one really had the reason," Jester said. "As of Monday, he had good progress. They did get an abscess to pop out of his hind left foot on Sunday, and he's more comfortable on that now. I'm hoping we get the same thing out of his right foot and get him back 100% here."

Ray Paulick, editor-in-chief of the Bloodhorse writes: Won't Be Fueled Again, which discusses cheating in horse racing and the need for national oversight. The latter appears to be an overwhelming sentiment from those without a direct interest in the current (lack of) organization for horse racing in the US.

After viewing this board for 8 months every morning this is the first time I will be first!

Good morning all FOB !! Hope everyone has a great day! It's very cold here in Vermont but we're supposed to warm up a bit today. Perhaps a prayer for Real Quiet would be a nice way to start the day. Always remembering our great Barbaro-he sure changed a lot of lives didn't he? Hope to get to the 29th celebration. That's enough ramgbling for one day. On with it. Richie

Good morning Alex, FOB & Sweet Heavenly barbaro.

Thanks for the updates Alex... always a pleasure!

I'm prepping to leave for Phoenix tomorrow, so I'm sad to say I may miss some updates for a few days... I'll try to check in from my mom's pc.

    Have a great week everyone!

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I loved reading all the comments yesterday about the upcoming Fountain of Youth Stakes. I'm getting excited about racing - unlike previous years when I only payed attention to the Tripple Crown and Breeders' Cup. Such a deep field in the FOY - it's hard to make a choice.

    ###
Ken Z. - Any word from John Hall yet? (I used to see him in his previous career in the mid-80s in upstate NY and was pleased to see him get to Washington.)

Prayers to all who have suffered loses of loved ones of late - cindy a and Karen in TX, and anyone else I missed. They will always have a special place in your heart.

Good morning Alex, Everyone and sweet one, Barbaro! Thank you for the update article on Real Quiet, Alex. When I read the first article at Bloodhorse, I had a sinking feeling in my stomach, all too familiar feeling. I am praying that the removal of the abcesses will resolve the problem, I'm praying that "L" word does not crop up in the diagnosis!
    Have a good day everyone!

Good Wednesday morning Alex, Barbaro (in heaven) and FsOB

I'm also happy to hear that Real Quiet seems to be more comfortable. Hopefully he'll be well and discharged soon.

    Socorro,

Thanks so much for creating the link to the Web Site for Congress. It makes it easier to get the contact information we need.

I, too, am dismayed that the Rosie cam is down. What is happening, I wonder?

    Lynn G. - have a great trip

Richie - I agree with you - Barbaro DID change LOTS of lives.

I'll check back later for the Committee member list for today. Please take a few minutes to call, email or fax.

Hiya, FsOB! Please don't forget the vigil tonight at 7 PM EST to honour the memory of our sweet prince, Barbaro "Bobbey" Jackson. Yes, Richie, this horse has touched and continues to touch so many lives. Please light up the world with a candle for Barbaro tonight.

To all Nutmegger FsOB: Still no response from Sen. Dodd's office. This weekend, I'll send another letter to him and a follow-up letter to Congressman Courtney (am having a very, very busy week at work). If you know anyone in the 2nd District, please have them call, write, or e-mail Joe Courtney's office.

    Good Morning Angel Barbaro...

You are an Angel to us on earth as well as in heaven...We know you had ACN...and today be filled with wonderful fun.

We miss you and love you...and feel your spirit among all of us...Please Barbaro...show us many ways to get tasks that is unfinished done in positive directions.

    Good Morning Fans/Family of Barbaro...

As Harriette said: Let us pursue the ways that Barbaro has spoke to us and use our gifts to our very best abilities...

Please, fax, email, and call...horses are suffering and we are their voices...I pray that we will be heard and not fall on deaf ears.

Remember the rescues, the ones suffering, all animals large or small...the spoken and unspoken requests, and comfort to those who have lost a loved one or a dear pet.

Let us get the Barbaro Bill passed quickly, find cure for laminitis, help horses that are being abused, in fact all animals...and the lists goes on...We have alot to do...but as family of Barbaro...nothing is impossible...and we will win and prevail...

I thank everyone for being part of this family and I am highly honored.

Alex and Tim as always...thank you....

    Everyone have a blessed day.

Barbaro is smiling...and as he said, when we are tired, get on his back and he will carry us...thus we need to do the same...and carry on Barbaro's Legacy..

    Good Morning FOB’s….

    Here we go again……..

As many of you know, we started a new strategy this week. HR503 is in two committees in the House and S311 is in one committee in the Senate. Because a large volume of calls at once makes a big impression, we’re going to post the names of three committee members each day in the hopes that everyone will call those three people. We will be posting one name from each committee.

So in addition to contacting our OWN representative and two senators, please take a moment to call the following three committee members on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28

Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation
    Trent Lott MS
    202-224-6253
    202-224-2262 FAX

House Committee on Energy and Commerce
    Anna Eshoo CA
    202-225-8104
    202-225-8890 FAX

    House Agriculture Committee
    Bob Ethridge NC
    202-225-4531
    202-225-5662 FAX

Don’t forget to contact your OWN representatives and two senators and ask them to co-sponsor.

When calling the committee members, the object is to ask them to please get it out of committee and to the floor for a vote. You are calling them as committee members and not as your representatives so it doesn’t matter that they are from a different state.

Have a great day and happy calling!!!!!

I'm so glad Dr. Richardson is getting to help another Kentucky Derby Champ. He could have his own show on E!, something about "celebrity horse doctor"....well never mind.

I'm donating my $29 to the UPENN Laminitis Fund today. Since we don't have a 29th this month I'm doing it today. Please remember to give either online or by mail any amount you can to help find a cure for this ugly disease. Remember, doctors we able to treat Barbaro's pain very well, it was lack of proper growth of the hoof that was the problem. Through science and research I'm confident that issue can be addressed.

Barbaro, we need you to be a special guardian angel for Real Quiet. He is being taken care of by Dr. R. Please watch over him. Hope that you are enjoying running up and down the streets of gold complete with your wings and halo. You will always be my champ, my hero, my angel, my miracle. Loving you as always. Good morning FOB. Good morning Alex. A few weeks ago, TIME magazine published an article by one of their regular contribuing writers, Joel Stein, entitled "A Mane Course". As a longtime subscriber to TIME (25 years) to say that I was appalled and disgusted by this jerk's misinformed and arrogant opinion is an understatement. This week's issue published two response letters to this creep's article. As you will see, both are right on target. TIME always gives the other viewpoint, but in this case, apparantly, there weren't any.

"Joel Stein's "A Mane Course" was absolutely disgusting (Feb. 19). To even suggest that horsemeat be eaten in this country just because it's done in other countries is plain ignorance. Horses are not bred to be eaten but to be used for work, battle and sport. They are a big part of history and deserve to be honored, not slaughtered. Jamie Tomchik, Baltimore"

"Although a horse lover and recent convert to vegetarianism, I was willing to read what Stein had to say, but all I got from his article was some sort of nose thumbing. He said that in the U.S. we oppose eating horsemeat because we think "like a 14-year-old girl." He sounds like an 8-year-old boy who pulls the wings off flies for fun. Perhaps Stein should also order some cat, dog and hamster meat. Karle LaFitte, Spring, Texas".

We are being heard. We are making a difference. Let's keep the pressure on our legislators to pass "Barbaro's Bill" soon. Big Boss Hoss is saying YEAHHH!! Love and miss you forever Bobby.
Looking forward to celebrating your B-day in Delaware Park.

    Good morning, all!

    APN...I love it! ROTFL!

Ashley, I second your idea of Dr. R having a TV show. I'm probably the last person in the world to think about such a thing. I've never watched any of the "reality" shows that have been so popular over the last few years. But I'd definitely tune in to Dr. R! I think he has the ability to reach a lot of people in positive, meaningful ways, not just "entertainment".

And speaking of Dr. R, sending my prayers for healing for Real Quiet...and prayers of gratitude that he's in the hands of the best!

Hopefully, I'll be able to send my $29 today. I'm thinking I may get a job offer today - fingers crossed!

Hi gang: took me way less than 5 minutes to call the three committee members chosen for calling today. Everyone was upbeat and polite...and you know, it MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD TO ACTUALLY BE DOING SOMETHING. Don't be afraid about calling. Once you make your first(very brief)call, you'll be primed for the next, and the next....and then we'll put this damned thing in motion and assure that Barbaro's name shines forever (as if it wouldn't already....)as America takes proper care of their horses.

PS: Reading Jane Smiley's non-fiction book: A Year at The Races. She is a Pulitzer prize-winning author who also owns TB's, and this book is an account of her life with her horses, their issues, their qualities. I am finding it a great read. And her other horse book; HORSE HEAVEN is just sublime. I have read it three times, because it is such a love poem to the racehorse...the stars, the strugglers, the claimers: all of them..I daresay you will ALL love HORSE HEAVEN. (And there's nothing in it to make you sad: imagine that.) (Unless a Jack Russell going about her evil deeds
    makes you sad....lol.)

Have a fine day. Keep Barbaro at the top of your thought. Your love for him and your respect for the Jackson's alone will motivate you into action to get these damned. damned bills out of committee and onto the floor!

best to all: jonna in liverpool ny

Dear FsOB (earth angels), A little over 4 years ago my friend and I started a drive to get our 8 mile long dirt road paved. We worked hard, and yesterday in NM, the House passed legislation to give our County the money to pave it, and the Senate passing is due today.

So, we must never give up our campaigning to end horse slaughter. The system does work, even though we get tired and diffused sometimes.

We know this, look at Rosie.

All the farms with cam's are the same folks who are fighting to keep Horse Slaughter.

Hurts me to see it, and say it. But it's true!

Already sent in my $29 this month for the Laminitis Research Fund at NBC. Will do every month.

I love the idea of an Animal Planet show with Dr. Richardson educating everyone on animal medicine. Animal Planet ought to get on it!

Socorro -- thank you for contiually reposting links.

Alex, could you please repost your book recommendations with links so you can get credit? I cannot find the second one.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS thoughts of BARBARO !

He was our hero and our "friend" and I know, as Ritchie said in the first posting, BARBARO truly changed so many people.

Have a wonderful day, all . . . and GO GO GO NBC -- help Real Quiet ! They are ultimately so fragile, aren't they?

    RUN HOOF RUN
    ACN above always ! BARBARO . . .

For a philosophic nudge, as always, by Joe, who works with the realities every day -

    TB Friends today
    --------------------
Wednesday, February 28th... It is so foggy right now you can look out our kitchen window and not see horses just a few feet away. But we know they are there. We can here them sloshing around in a foot of mud...

A week of crazy weather, and not a clean horse blanket to be found. In miserable cold rain yesterday workers put up a new fence, even afer I told them to go home. Pony Boy settled in the barn isle with Jewel on his cd player. Fresh horses from race tracks all have blankets, and field horses dined on soggy alfalfa. It took awhile, but winter is here. Muddy dog paws on the couch...

And bad weather comes at a time when a thousand things are happening at once. Horses at auctions, horses at feed lots, anxious killers at race tracks, and callers who say take my horse or else. Cell phone blackmail. Each morning I have been telling you about specific horses in trouble. Readers respond, and how can we ever say thank you?

Standardbreds race while pulling a cart, and several are available right now. A young morgan gelding with sore feet, and also an older appendix mare with big ankles. A 3 year old wild thoroughbred who has hardly been touched, and an older paint mare who came from Canada. There is a quarter horse gelding who is skinny, and another quarter horse gelding who might be 25. We are buying a thoroughbred mare with a racing tattoo, and also a thoroughbred gelding who once was famous. The killer and his doomed list. 40 cents a pound, plus transportation.

Young readers want to know how can I associate with horse killers? The same way I associate with a cashier at Target. It is nothing more than a business transaction. Here is my money, give me my horse...

And thank goodness for young girls. Probably 80 percent of all adoptions go to horse loving young girls, and there would be no Tbfriends without them. We continue on because girls love horses. Young girls from 10 years ago who are now young ladies. And they still have their horse. They send letters and pictures, a history of dreams which came true.

A visit to any feed lot, and you will find an ex race horse. It does not matter the day of the week. Or the hour of the day. There standing in his own poop will be a thoroughbred hoping for help. It is bad enough the stud chains and whips. The steroids and masked drugs. Making the poor horse run 40 miles an hour on toothpick legs. And if you are a gelding and your racing career is down the toilet, there is a really good chance the slaughter house is your next stop.

Any hour of any day. There will be a thoroughbred at a feed lot.

My favorite letters and phone calls are the ones that say America does not slaughter their horses. Living in la la land. Sometimes not knowing bad means you live a life of good. Nothing really wrong with that. Unless you are a horse.

    Joe

    --------------------

Have a wonderful, nearing spring, day...

And prayers for Cindy a's Phoenix, now with Barbaro in the fields of heaven.

I thought the same thing..I wanted to donate $29.29, but it would only accept whole dollars (bummer)

I also thought maybe we should staggger donations somewhat, due to end-of-month accounts receivable
issues, but then again I like the impact that multiple donation brings. I'm sure some are sending by mail also.

Still awaiting news from UPenn's fund raising partnership proposals via Mary Berger. Has anyone seen any info in that regard.

When we get this bill passed, the prices of horses will drop so, maybe all the breeding will stop. There will not be any money in it.

Thank God, mares only have one foal a year. Unlike dogs and cats.

Hi everyone again. FYI, there's another equine publication I have subscribed to for many years called "The Horse". It is read primarily by veternarians but alot of horse owners find it very informative as well. They are always on top of the latest technology and treatments available to horses. In the March issue is a wonderful article by Kimberly Brown, editor, entitled "Thank you, Barbaro". Some excerpts from Dr. Scott Palmer, long-time friend of Michael Matz:

"He (Barbaro)handled himself well throughout the ordeal. He was patient with all of us trying to help him. He was calm. He was a classy horse, and he took care of himself. He helped us help him. He deserved the opportunity to live".

"Everyone knew it was going to be a difficult prognosis, but that didn't deter the team effort. Credit and thank yous go to the Jacksons. They were motivated by the right issues. They are class people, and they cared about the horse. That's all they cared about. The only reason they wanted to save this horse was because they could. They didn't care if he made it to the breeding shed or not."

Palmer wanted everyone to know this whole process was not an attempt to avoid the inevitable; it was an effort to do the right thing for the horse. "Every advantage medicine could offer was given to Barbaro. That's a tribute to the Jackson's. I think, over time, history will judge that this was the right thing to do. The tragedy is that it didn't work out."

While these were Palmer's words, they echoed the sentiment of the veterinary community.

    Thank you, Barbaro.

Sometimes, I think the non-responsible horse owners think of their horses as toys...
Pull off the shelf to play with them...and then put back on shelf when finished....Otherwords, when they are tired of them...so be it, sell for the best price...no matter the consequence...SAD.

These are not true animal lovers...like us...an animal lover is a lifetime committment...for the rest of the animal/horse life...COMMITTMENT...

Can they not undertand...these are living creatures...and deserve a good life....this just gets my dandruff up...no committment for our loving animal and all they ask is TLC...and we get unconditional love...

    #### Joan Roya--Very true. Too many "owners" look at their animals as just one more "possession" and when they grow tired of it, it becomes someone else's "problem" and they can just move on to the next one and continue the cycle. So the shelters fill with cats and dogs and the slaughter trucks fill with horses. . .I will never understand that total disregard for life.

And speaking of possessions, I look at all the stuff I'd like, but don't need and then spend my money on what counts today--my $29 on the 28th--plus a little something for the baby foals at Last Chance.

I DO need more books from Amazon, however! Alex--can you (in your "spare" time) maybe create a link to Amazon along with the others on the left column so that credit from our orders can go to YOU!?! Thanks!

    REPOST

Smitty - Thanks for the link.

Barbaro - I miss you. I have the book which has a picture of you as a baby and you were a cutie.

I'm going to try and keep up with Bobby's brothers over the next few years and hope one of them can achieve the greatness on the track that Barbaro was denied. I also hope that by the time they race many racing surfaces will have been changed and that there is some progress on fighting laminitis. I also pray that the horse slaughter bills are passed.

I'm praying for Real Quiet. I hope he gets out of NBC soon - at least we know he has the best looking out for him You go - Dr. R.!!!

    Great, wonderful idea.

My mom was very strict with her children, but very, very sweet to all her animals.

So, she passed it down to her children, and my children were taught to treat animals with love and respect.

We have pets. They depend on us for everything. From water to love to food to play. All they want are the basics, but my oh my, what they give back can never be measured.

Crossposting this from Friends Against Horse Slaughter Yahoo Group board. (Hope that's OK.)
I wanted you all to see this, in case it hasn't been posted here as yet. (Haven't read anything here yet today - but in any event - it bears repeating IMO.)

Mayor Paula Bacon of Kaufman, Texas has been one of the true leaders opposing horse slaughter. Her term will expire in May, but she knows her work in not finished and is ready to start her re-election campaign.

Supporters of the horse slaughter plant funded efforts to defeat her in her last re-election. She needs our financial help.

Mayor Bacon has been on a number of national news networks and numerous radio and TV stations telling of the horror of horse slaughter and the stigma it has brought to her town. Instead of growing in prosperity as many communities surrounding Dallas are doing, Kaufman is simply known as, "That place where they kill horses." Mayor Bacon has led the city in repeated efforts to stop the horse slaughter plant's numerous violations to the expensive sewer system, and to control the plant's stench that falls over the town. When the plant ignored these efforts, she asked the City Council to declare Dallas Crown a 'nuisance,' to, in effect, close them down. These efforts, as so many other efforts, have been stopped by a myriad of lawyers throwing paper at the court system.

Mayor Bacon has fought beside us for years. As an elected official, she is perhaps the most powerful voice we have coming from one of the three communities where horse slaughter plants exist in the United States. It has taken a lot of courage, but she has taken a strong stance against the shame that horse slaughter represents. Now it's time to give her our support for all she has done and continues to do. We need her in office, to continue her fight against Dallas Crown and to support our battle in Washington DC as the Federal Bills come to the floor for a final victory.

Your contribution, no matter how small, will ensure that her strong voice will continue in our battle. Please visit http://www.paulabac onformayor. com to donate by credit card or PayPal, or send you contribution to:

Joan and others - I agree with you that bringing a horse into your life means taking on the commitment to provide a good home for the horse's lifetime, but having worked with professionals in the hunter/jumper, eventing and dressage worlds, it's not always that simple. Most owners, including the professionals I've dealt with, are very, very careful to do their best to find good, loving homes for horses who aren't quite suited to the job, don't like the work they're asked to do or are ready to retire. But short of having a contract that states the horse reverts back to them if the new owner can no longer keep it, it can be difficult to assure those horses stay in those homes. People lose jobs, get divorced, lose property to zoning/development and have other circumstances that make them unable to afford to keep a horse. I think the best answer to this is exactly what's happened with the FOB and this site (and many, many thanks to Alex and Tim for allowing this to flourish) - establish a network of people throughout the country to serve as a resource to help those horses find loving homes, work to outlaw horse slaughter and publicize the fact that we're here to help with both!

    Margie,

I like your idea of reaching the children and grandchildren.

In fact, MHR every spring starts their program inwhich we invite the public specifically children of all ages to learn about horses, and their care. It is structured and broken into age groups and they learn safety, basic horse care and the responsibilities of owning not only a horse but owning any pet. Many parents remain dueing these sessions, and they have come away with a new outlook as well. Additionally, in the April-May time frame we will have approximately 100 people children and parents alike coming to MHR for a "A Day with the Horses". The vast majority of these individuals are coming from the city and have never been around horses ever, so this should be not only an informative time but fun for all. There will be many topics covered throughout the day. Hopefully Rosies baby will be here.

    Thank You

I mailed my donation today. I thought the same as you, no 29th this month, so today was the day. I feel I HAVE to do this because I love and miss Barbaro so much, and I want laminitis to end so there will be a day when we won't lose our loved horses ANYMORE because of it. It's just been so very devastating losing Barbaro. And there are countless other horses suffering and people grieving for them because of it. I wish I had a scientific mind so I could offer my services. Unfortunately that isn't the case :(
So I'll give what I can to help those who can find the answers.

    Laurie H.:
I don't know exactly what happened but whatever it was I hope you come back to your friends. I'm not a very good one to talk because I've stayed away myself. It wasn't a comment on here that caused me to stay away, it was an actual email sent to my home computer. I still don't know how she got my email address because I never gave it out.
Laurie don't do what I did. I peek in once in a while and leave a message to Barbaro but I will not leave a comment. This site can go on without me but Laurie you are the heart of this site. You are like everyone's best friend here. More than that you keep Bobby's heart beating for us.
I was wrong to stay away. The best part is, the person who emailed me isn't even here anymore. At least she isn't posting under her usual name anyway.
Don't stay away Laurie. You are much too important of a friend to us and to Barbaro.

Stupid question: Who is working to change the Anti-Slaughter bills to "Barbaro's Bill" and is there any progress on that?

Just speaking the words "Barbaro's Bill" to congressmen, aides and the general public could not help but have a huge effect on getting their attention. And who could dare not support something with Barbaro's name attached. That would be un-American in my eyes.

How can we get this done?

Thanks for posting the info about Mayor Bacon's re-election. She is a courageous and tireless leader who is now facing the threat of losing her seat simply because she wants to end the barbaric, damnable practice of horseslaughter, and to clean up the environment in her city. And to attract new jobs and a better standard of living for the citizens in the process.

GAYLE Lorenzen and DOE, I'm very glad to see you back.

    UPDATE ON HS ARTICLE

    Hi everyone!
I don't know if anyone remembers this, but in early February I posted that I was in contact with Jason Shandler (ESPN) about an article on HS. Well, he's finished, I've read it, and it's really, really good. I hope all of you will be as pleased with it as I am; Jason is an excellent writer, and I think he hits just the right tone with the story. There is an entire section on FOB Steve Rei and NERC! It will probably be posted early next week, and will be featured prominently in the horse racing section of espn.com, which has a large readership.
I will let you all know when it's posted, but hopefully Alex will beat me to it and already have it in one of the updates before I even wake up (I'm in sunny CA).
Have a great day calling Congress. I think this site is made up of so many caring people, and the best part is you put that caring into action to help the horses!

    Welcome back.
It is so sad that this person who has been submitting heckling posts in the evening has chosen to attack our gentlest participant, Laurie H., and to ridicule Laurie's nightly tuck-ins, which give us so much comfort. Whatever this person's agenda is, and whatever she is upset about, it would have been more courageous to speak openly about it. I can't believe that this person's sole agenda was to drive Laurie away.

Just contributed to Mayor Bacon's re-election campaign. It is so critical to have her re-elected. She is courageous and committed.

Cindy A and Karen in TX, I am so sorry for your losses. You and your families are in my prayers....your babies don't need them any longer, but I know it still is so, so hard.

Also, it hasn't been mentioned here lately, but I wanted to be sure that folks who work for companies might be sure to take the time to check to see if their employer will match contributions to UPenn. I was surprised to see that mine does, even though we're way out west in Texas, and does not restrict it so I can donate to the Laminitis fund and double my impact....so cool.

Harriette, your journal today was so uplifting and soothing. Thanks fo much for continuing to share so much of yourself with us.

Leslie in MN here... I think Laurie may be having computer issues or is possibly ill and not doing any computing. I have emailed her and it is not like her to not respond. We had some plans to talk yesterday and I was not able to reach her via computer Over the weekend her city was hit with 30 inches of snow and now there is another blizzard on the way to MN. The snow has also been melting causing a variety of problems like leaking roofs!

I am hopeful that she is simply not able to communicate via computer. I know that Laurie is a sweet and wonderful person, but I dont think that looser person could scare her off that quickly. She is a very strong person with a heart of gold and she loves all of you guys very much.

I hope she can make contact soon. We all need her around here.

I am trying a new approach with Senator John Cornyn and it is, how can he NOW be againist the Anti-Slaughter bill S-311 when the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit ruled that the Texas state law, making it illegal to slaughter horses and sell or transfer horsemeat for human consumption is in effect and "survives the constitutional challenges raised by the slaughterhouses." I also told him that since 1949 and several times thereafter, the Texas Legislature amended the state's Agriculture Code ( Chapter 149) making it illegal to sell, possess and transport horsemeat for sale for human consumption. The people of the state of Texas have never never wanted horses slaughtered, for any reason.
Cannot believe he is so indifferent to what the voters want.
Sent the same info to Kay Bailey Hutchinson

What are other Texans doing and what has been the response?

Was so glad to learn Barbaro loved the warm water of the recovery pool. Will always miss him and his magnificient spirit and eyes that had such wisdom in them.

I was pretty sure that I received a letter from Kay Bailey Hutchinson last year that indicated that she would support the Anti Slaughter Act if it came out of committee. I don't save these notes, so can't be sure. She has supported some of the animal friendly legislation that I have written to her about, breaking with her political cohorts on these issues.

    REPOST

Have a great day and happy calling!!!!!

    ,LETS LOOK OUT

ON THAT PADDOCK AND SEE THE HILLS CARRYING BARBARO;S great LIGHT--
the quiet beauty of a horse who has served well..
maybe eating in the fields doing nothing is a point in the turn
    i can take sometime
    today
to send the new patient at NBC some comfort and
    strength.----------------------
    ---------------------------------------
    maybe a basket?
in his name and a check to the laminitis fund..something , to let him
    know we hear him too
    and dear world,
    --------------------------------------..
there are horses there ,and now someone else in barbaro;s stall..
    i am taken suddenly
    with the possibility
of new energy coming into my heart
    in barbaro's name.
    ..they can stand by barbaro
    and help grow
    the quiet understanding
that barbaro has some great work to do
if i can only hear it clearly
    subtle,powerful energy
i do not want to miss
in the confusion of pain and missing him and agony of what could have
    been
great sages wrote volumes about this..
and letting go may mean filling up
    oh my
to get this heart ache to grow
into a span of gold and silk
    blue and green miles ----...
maybe i make more room in my heart
    for things i dont get
like the sword of cruel actions rendered so indifferently upon the
    innocence
    APACHE
    nameless millions
    of scores and scores
    horses dumped into concrete bins,
    n;are a tear shed

    and now
    in barbaro;s spirited galloping
across far away and unknown galaxy,
i can muster the strength to hold hands .
    to pass dr dean
the green fields he walked in
    with barbaro
and find the mystery of new ways
to lift the heavy emptiness that returns every day
    a familiar place
filled by him just yesterday--it does not have to be empty ...
    'imagine
barbaro and the love of the blue bucket

I emailed Gail Luciani, Director of Communications at NBC, to tell her I was having problems with the laminitis fund link on their site, and I also wrote:

"Just want to alert you that many Fans of Barbaro are donating $29.00 each month on the anniversary of his passing to honor his memory...We love you all and appreciate all you did for him."

She wrote back to thank me for letting them know and she added,

"We are also very grateful to you and to everyone who is remembering Barbaro with this very kind donation -- it's hard to believe it's been a month."

    What classy people they are.

Also checked out the Animal Planet site to see about suggesting a show for Dr. R, but they send you to a link for show producers only and there's a little note saying they are not taking unsolicited ideas. Oh well. Guess the good doc is busy enough; hope Real Quiet is improving. We know he's in the best place he could be.

    Hi Folks:

The BDude is doing good physically these days - eating a lot, purring, running around. He gets confused a lot though.

The Big Dudette (Funny)is hanging in there but she's feeling the effects of long term insulin use. She's not a happy kitty but hanging in there.

Thanks for the prayers & candles for both.

    Hi All
No time to read all the post. Just a quick note from Kennett Square. I returned from NBC at 2:30 what a great visit. They loved the cookies. Libby was so happy over the basket for her kids. The mood was up but busy. I got a lot of hugs. Even a repairman came up to the truck to say hello. It was so nice to see smiles. Where as a month ago, were tears. Thanks for sending me to brighten the day.

    Good day to all -
For those of us who are not insiders in the racing business, but who are curious about the breeding of various horses, either rescued or running in races, the following link is a neat one. You can input the name of any horse who has been registered and get a five generation chart. So, out of curiosity, I ran the name of Photon Torpedo, the horse Joe at TB Friends mentioned yesterday. The breeding chart for Photon includes some interesting horses... That is the second link below. This is a free service, by the way, though a superior version is available for additional cost. But, for an amateur like myself, this is more than adequate.

    http://www.pedigreequery.com/photon+torpedo

Bizarrely busy at work, so cannot do anything except check on the Madonna-in-waiting, and post this. Will try to read later...
Sent several emails, made my calls, and now must run.
Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day - courage and kindness.

    Hi everyone!

Been watching Rosie a lot throughout the day (I'm SO glad I can finally get the cam at work). She has had her chicken brigade and a turkey friend in there with her. She seems sedate...eating a lot of the time and just kinda walking around...and still very pregnant! Poor baby....hopefully she will foal soon!

I hope everyone is having a great day!

Karen in TX - I wanted to add condolences for the loss of your Kitty Boots. My orange and white cat who died in November was named Booter - he had very cool white boots, of course! He was only ten, and I had rescued him as a grotesquely underweight and abused (broken tail, burned pads on his paws) six week old kitten. He grew into quite the nicest cat imaginable - mellow, and tough all at once - and the cuddliest, most loving beastie. Gosh, I miss him so much... - Jean

    Hello FsOB,

Made my calls to Reps and Senator. I actually like doing a few every day. For one thing - it then becomes a habit - make calls every day and also - it doesn't take a huge chunck of time out of my schedule. Besides that - you get to talk to different people every day.

Rosie, Rosie - when will it be?

    TO EVERYONE ....

MY HEART IS FILLED TO THE 29TH DEGREE WITH GRATITUDE!!

I have just read all of the posts that I've missed from yesterday and today, and I am so elated that $29 on the 29th Campaign is so successful. Thank you all so much for latching on to an idea that came to me the day that Barbaro crossed over. It was his inspiration for sure that spoke to me.

I read a post from Laurie, (I think) who said that she 'hoped' to donate her $29 today because she was waiting for good news on a job offer. Laurie, that's terrific, but if you really want to get that job, then you must FIRST donate that $29 because you are then sending a sign and message out to the Universe that you are confident enough that you will get the job offer. When you send out that signal, the Universe responds positively. So if you want more money and offers to come in, you must first give them out. Do it, Laurie!!

So, go ahead and make that donation, Laurie, and then watch the job offer come through for you. It works! It really works that way!!

    ##############

    I HAVE AN IDEA!!!

FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T YET DONATED THEIR $29 TODAY ... I HAVE NOT YET EITHER BECAUSE I AM WAITING FOR THE RIGHT MOMENT, BUT I THINK I HAVE IT NOW.

I AM GOING TO DONATE AT 4:29 PM this afternoon, the actual date of Barbaro's birth. So you might want to follow suit as well. If you can't do it at 4:29, then any hour plus 29 minutes will do the trick ... just be sure to get that "29" in there somehow!!

    REPOST

    Goodnight Fans/Family of Barbaro...

Someday as the good book says: Lion and Lamb will lie down beside each other...I pray man will learn to get along and give all due respect to all of God's living creatures.

It bothers me reading an article that some people are so caught up in making a dollar they inject horses with drugs and snake venom...HOW DESPICTABLE AND SAD!!!!

Please remember all the ones suffering..the spoken and unspoken requests...

Please keep the candles burning for Barbaro and his Fallen Angels...soon...Barbaro's Bill will pass...and I pray quickly...we speak for the ones that cannot speak for themselves.

Prayers to the ones who are struggling, the ones who have lost loved ones or their loved pets.

Remember the rescues, the Fallen Angels, and pray for a cure for laminitis...plus pray for each other...after all we are family...we live in the House that Barbaro Built...

Let us finished the tasks that has been left and fulfill Barbaro's legacy.

This is a good day...Have a bless evening.

    I called all three members.

Trent Lott-very nice young lady answered the phone. She said he was a sponsor of the last bill and would support this one as well.

Ana Eshoo-Supported the bill last session. Her aide that deals with animal issues is out ill today. His name is Steve Kenyan so perhaps we should give him a call tomorrow.

Etheridge-Was a co-sponsor last session. The aide was not sure if he was a co-sponser for this session.

This link is to an article published by the American Vet Medical Assoc. Of course they are opposed to the horse slaughter bill. They cite the issue of what will become of these thousands of unwanted horses as the main reason for their opposition.

The last paragraph indicates they are going to try to draft legislation to address the welfare of unwanted horses. Here is that quote:

"Additionally, the AVMA Executive Board has directed the GRD to help draft legislation addressing the welfare needs of the nation's unwanted horse population as an alternative to the slaughter bill."

Of course, I don't support their position on HR. 503 or S 311. But, I would be very interested to see their bill for unwanted horses.

One more thing for the FOB's to keep up with.

An excerpt from Joe's journal at www.tbfriends.com

Reply from UPenn about taping Dr. R's lecture:

We are indeed looking into the possibility of recording the talk on
DVD. We have some challenges in this area, namely, the limited
space we have and some other key issues, but we've taped lectures in
the past, so we hope that in this instance it can be done.

We will let you know if a DVD of the lecture becomes available.

Thank you for your kind words and your interest.

I hope SOME DAY I can enjoy going back to look at his pictures and read all my books!

My Precious Barbaro: Another day without you and the pain of missing you is still so immense. I know that you are "perfect" now and happy, but I won't be happy again until I go home and see you face to face. Love you so much...

Father, thank you for the "Miracle of Barbaro"

Lost in the Fog: My beautiful angel horse....5 months and still missing you so very much. When my time is up, I pray that our Father will send you and Barbaro to lead me home. Love you and your "crooked blaze".

Father, thank you for "The Fog"

Alex: Thank you for all that you continue to do for us. Love reading your "picture perfect" articles of Fair Hill.

Barbaro Family: Praying all is well with you and yours. Prayers and candles continue for all in need....and the "furry" ones, too. Sorry that I haven't been posting very much. MAJOR computer problems at home....I only have computer access at work and this is "very limited" access to us that work here. May all of your have a pleasant evening.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! To Navidad on the birth of her new "baby" Rain. I remember when the FOB's rescued Navidad last year. She was pregnant at the time and was given that name because she has a mark on her side that looks like a Christmas tree.....such a beautiful little filly now has. Such a blessing that 2 are alive because of the FOB's.

Prayes and candles to Real Quiet.....praying that our Father will give him have a rapid and healthy recovery. He couldn't be at a better place than NBC and our "wonderful" Dr. Richardson.

I haven't been able to catch up with all the comments, so I don't know what is happening with Laurie H. and Sandie.............hope they both come back soon. You guys are missed and need to come back, please.

Welcome back "doe".......nice to hear from your.

Thank you Harriette for sending me "My Journey With Barbaro"........beautiful, just beautiful.

I'll be with everyone tonight for the "candle vigil" for our beautiful bay colt....just miss him so much.

Please keep my "virtual" horse, Mattie, in your prayers and light candles for him when you get a chance. Thank you.

Good evening everyone~ I received this today from a family member who is Sen Kerry's press secretary. I invited them to visit this site to see what we are doing and was told they would. I was assured that Sen Kerry is using his clout to win over those in the Senate that are still 'on the fence' regarding horse slaughter. Here is the press release:

Washington, D.C. – Senator John Kerry today received a score of 100% on the Humane Society’s Humane Scorecard on animal protection issues during the 109th Congress. His score was based on his opposition to horse slaughter, animal fighting and downed animal slaughter.

"The Humane Society should be applauded for its work championing the cause of protecting animals, and I'm proud to receive a 100% rating from the group," said Senator Kerry. "I'll continue to be an advocate for animal rights and work with my colleagues in Washington to ensure the Humane Society has a voice in Congress that recognizes and furthers its important work."

Kerry was a co-sponsor of the Horse Slaughter Amendment, legislation that prohibits the slaughter of horses for human consumption. He also co-sponsored the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act which created felony-level penalties for violations of the federal law on dog fighting and cockfighting. In addition, Kerry was a co-sponsor of the Downed Animal Protection Act which prohibits USDA certification of meat from sick or injured livestock.

Every year the Humane Society Legislative Fund creates a federal Humane Scorecard to give a snapshot of the animal protection issues considered by the U.S. Congress. The scorecard tracks key votes as well as co-sponsorship of pro-animal bills. This is the fourth consecutive time the Senator has received 100%.

Kerry will be honored at a reception Wednesday evening in Washington.~~

Hi all: First off I have to say I am surprised and very pleased that Sen. Kerry is on board with this. I gotta be honest, I didn't like him as a presidential candidate but I guess the guys not so bad after all. I mean anyone that is doing this much for horses and animals in general must be deep down a good soul. Don't know if I would ever vote for him, but I am sure glad he is doing something good with his power. Bravo Sen. Kerry.

Still no word on Rosie's baby yet? Boy that is one stubborn little foal. I hope it's soon.

    ###
    Patti,

I gotta tell you that video was absolutely amazing. What a great horse. I never saw dressage before. I know that one of my partners who takes our retired horses trains some of them for dressage but I really never knew what it was. I tell you one thing though, I'm going to become a fan of it. It's awesome to watch.

I will say a prayer for Real Quiet. He's in good hands though so I am sure he will be okay.

I received another update from Florida on my babies. They are doing great. Two are back in training and may be coming home at the end of March. I can't wait to see them. I miss them so much. My new little guy, Cobra Strike, is so adorable. He looks like you could just kiss him to death. He is the first horse I ever saw with an actual baby face. I probably won't get to see him though until they send him up at the end of May or June.

Well take care all. Come on Rosie, have that baby.

Joan Roya used the phrase "upset the applecart" which reminded me of one of my songs about yet another story from my anecdotage. After Joe (of whom I recently wrote here) died, I bought Simon, an Appy whose registered name was Genuine Fooler. Less than 3 weeks after I got him, it was broken back number 2 for me (L5 in 95). And then I wrote "The Appaloosa Blues" (one of the hooks is "Don't Let Your Daughter Ride an Appaloosa"). The chorus is:

    Genuine Fooler -
I guess I knew right from the start
    (bada Boom Boom BOOM)
    You'd upset my applecart
    You're an Indian pony
    With a wild, wild heart.

    ##########
Made all my calls for today. Aides for all three of the "designated hittees" were cordial and efficient. Rep. Eshoo's aide in particular said they had received "lots" of calls today. Also contacted my 2 Indiana Senators (Bayh and Lugar) and my Rep (Visclosky). None signed on to cosponsor yet. Of the 3 only Bayh was a cosponsor of S 1915, but he has not yet committed to cosponsor S 311.

Thanks to all who've said thanks for various things I've posted lately. I love doing this, and try to disseminate pertinent info. Couldn't find a worthier cause! CJ

Karen TX - Thank you for your information, it is so embarrassing for our two Senators to be so narrow minded. Did you know that (information I found out months and months ago) Beltex & Dallas Crown, pays $3 to the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association for each horse and pays $2 to Texas A & M Cooperative Extension and this goes to its stolen horse preventative education program. So it may be special interest groups keeping the Senators from voting the way the people feel. I told the Senators in faxes that in 1949, and several times thereafter, the Texas Legislature amdended the State's Agriculture Code (Chapter 149) making it ILLIGAL to sell, possess and transport horsemeat for sale for human consumption. Our state would not have done that if the people had not wanted to stop slaughter. That state law is the very one that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit ruled is in effect and "survives the constitutional cchallenges raised by the slaughterhouses." And yet our Senators refuse to get on board. I have noticed (I think, forgive me if I am wrong) that there are more Democratic supporters of the bill than Republican and our Senators are both Republican. I just want to end the slaughter and not have it go into more legal wrangling and it will if the Congress does not pass it.

I just wish we could meet with them to understand (which I wouldn't ) because it is just wrong.

    Miss you forever Barbaro!!!!!!

I just lit a few candles on gratefulness.org for our sweet prince to get things started. Please, if anyone stays in touch with Laurie H, please implore her to return. So many of us miss those nightly tuck-ins (which I read each AM).

    #### To Judy, Friar Tuck, and Jane in CT: Thanks for helping spread the word about calls needed to Congressmen Courtney & Murphy for HR 503. Friar Tuck, I'm sure you'll be very eloquent if you get to place a call to the radio show with Chris Murphy. Jane, thanks for the news about Sen. Kery award from the HSUS. Judy, thanks for the call to Sen. Dodd's office. I'll feel so much better when his name finally hits the list of co-sponsors for S-311.

To CJ, can you please repost the mailing address for contributions to Mayor Bacon in Kaufman, TX? I may've written it down wrong: 1504 Street Houston St. Also re. Mayor Bacon: Does anyone know if the "Profiles in Courage" Award allows nominations from everyday citizens? I'd be willing to help write a nomination for Mayor Bacon, if anyone else thinks that this would be appropriate. She IS a brave lady to take on such nefarious people as the Beltex Corporation.

Repost with snailmail address correction and more specific website URL for contributions

When the plant ignored these efforts, she asked the City Council to declare Dallas Crown a "nuisance," to, in effect, close them down.

Please visit

This might not be a popular notion with SOME horse owners, but I think this is an idea that might be worth some thought...as oppsoed to "snap judgement." It is an idea that would help to insure that every horse bought or sold will have the benefit of a gentle, peaceful passing, when its time comes:

Mandate that horse ownership must be licensed by the State. Just like licensing dogs...LICENSE EQUINES.

Here is an outline of the plan:

Let the cost of the license covers the cost of a state vet administered euthenasia. each horse will receive a chip, and /or tatooed number that registers the owner's information, and, most importantly, the initial license purchase. The owners could also opt to receive a voucher for their own vet if they would prefer to use their own vet's services.

    >>> From the very first time that horse is sold, it has a gentle ending insured...bought and paid for, with the first license.

    >Then, EVERY time the horse changes hands, new information is placed on the info-data, AND a new euthenasia fee is charged to the new owner. (There is a good reason for this cumulative fee, which I will mention later).*

When the time comes, to end the horse's life, the vet comes and deems whether or not the horse can be rescued. This is where rescue, or adoption options can be offered to the owner. If the rescue option is not applicable, then the vet administers the euthenasia, with a peaceful ending to that horse's life. NO NEED FOR THE SLAUGHTER TRUCK. The State could even offer reduced rate of body disposal, if the owner claimes to not be able to bury the horse.

*Since a natural lifespan of a horse can average 25 to 30 years, it is a sad fact that most horses are sold and resold many times throughout their lifetime. If a license fee of $70-$100 was added each time the horse was purchased, that could accumulate multiple licenses fees paid over the lifetime of the horse.

There can also be a minimal transfer fee charged to the seller when ownership of the horse changes hands The additional revenue produced by each license >per sale

The seller-transfer fee receipt will also release the seller from owner responsibility, which is then transfered to the new owner. Ownership can be monitored, and voucher confirmed to each new owner. Owners who "lose" or abandon horses can now be notified, and be made to assume responsibility, since they were the last one to hold the license.

Also, in order to get a horse license, the owner would have to show that he is able to properly provide care for the horse, and will receive pamphleted information on such. This way, an owner will never be able to plead ignorance to basic knowledge of equine husbandry or licensing requirements as an excuse for abuse or neglect.

This would be a win for the State, as well as for the horses.

Yes, it IS an added expense to the owner, but, horses are an expensive responsibility anyway...and rightly so. One pre-paid fee to cover the cost of a peaceful end is a small price to pay, if you have any sort of regard at all for the animal. ( It's the cost of 4 or 5 good pizzas).

No more, EASY COME, EASY GO! Even KBs would be required to pay the license fee for EVERY horse they buy. Eventually, there would be no need to sell sick or unwanted animals cheaply at auction.

The extra cost of purchasing a truckfull of horses would be prohibative to many KBs and hopefully starve them out of the business. It would also make casual selling of horses a bit more time consuming, and not quite so easy to do.

The exception to the cost of the regular license fee would be for State registered and sanctioned horse-rescue organizations. Perhaps they would agree to pay the transfer-fees of the seller if the horse was donated to the rescue org; and they would be allowed to apply THAT cost to a reduced license fee for the horse.

Additionally, along with the payment of each license purchased, the new owner can opt to apply the cost of a "donor-euthenasia fee," at half price, which would go toward the cost of euthenasia of an unlicenced or abandonded horse. This would be a charatable, one time donation which would be a kind of safety net in extreme emergencies for horses that have "slipped through the cracks" if the need arises.

Any thoughts on this? How might we plant this seed?

PS: It could also be mandated, that ALL horses who arrive at a slaughter house (if there are, heaven forbid, still any in existence when this is a reality) must be scanned, and ALL owners, back to the original license holder will be notified, per the information in the licensing data base, that the horse is at a slaughter house. Then, the horse is held for a certain time period, at least 72 hrs, to allow any former owners who wish to retrieve the horse, time to save the animal from slaughter.

This would cause a "back up" for the Slaughter houses and the KBs, that would also serve to thwart their dirty-work.

The most important thing though, is that, eventually all or most horses would have a peaceful ending pre-paid and insured.

For those planning to contact Kay Bailey Hutchinson, I checked the HSUS scorecard regarding the anti horse slaughter act in the Senate last year. While she did not co-sponsor the bill, she did vote in favor of the Horse Slaughter amendment(intended to stop the slaughter via lack of funding for federal inspectors). I plan to acknowledge her positive vote and ask her to step up to become a co-sponsor of the current bill. I think its important to acknowledge any positive direction and try to build on that.

Have no idea, mike - check her website http://www.mayorpaulabacon.com and maybe it says something about it. Her pic is at the website, she's quite an attractive woman; you may recognize her as the former jockey. It's not that common a name, probably is her. Or you can email her at paula@mayorpaulabacon.com and inquire. CJ

    Hello all,

Lighting candles for Barbaro and Dr. R, but don't forget the Jacksons, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado and Alex, without whom we wouldn't have this board!

    Hello everyone.

I am remiss in my manners, without introduction I've been posting a very few times since we lost our beloved Barbaro, yet I've been reading here since around July or August of last year. One question to start with, what is ACN? I've seen that so often but have no idea of what it means and would be grateful to have it explained.

To Alex and Tim, thank you for letting us all be your guests here, you make my day to come here and imagine Fair Hill and learn more about horses and racing, for that and so much more, I am truly grateful.

To Harriette, thank you for the lovely story, and all of your thoughtful posts...your words are a balm to my soul.

To Mary S. thank you for your email replies, your prayers, and lifting us all to a higher vibration. Keep posting if you are able, we all can use your energy.

To Laurie H. 'the tuck in mistress' I didn't get to sleep until well past 2am last night! We all need you to see us safely off to sleep. Let us wrap you in safety as the FoBs have done here when others have needed comfort and shelter on the board.

To everyone, I have found great comfort and strength here, as well as humor and new resolve, I especially enjoy watching Sailor kick up his heels and the psycho chickens that bedevil and watch over our Rosie.

    Peace to all!

Did well on my calls today, until I got to Senator Lott of MS. Guess I had the old folk’s thing. But the girl was nice and I finally got my point across. Lord thank you for your help, with that one!

For those who are following the triple crown, there is a website www.derbytrail.com that is very informative, sponsored by At the Races. They are having a live chat on Sat. morning due to all the big races at Gulfstream. Enjoy all the articles Alex posts, spring brings hope.

Senator Kerry is awesome, I wish everyone in politics had his heart and courage to stand up for the animals. 100% rating is fantastic.

Stephanie - great to see the follow-up on Jason's article.

Hope everyone had time to make a few calls today,
every call is important and that one call could make the difference. I saw a post on the DB regarding Exceller, 10 years ago he was slaughtered. Reading the article in the DRF 10 years ago is what brought me to get involved with stopping slaughter. The account of the girl leading him to the slaughter house is something I will never forget reading, we must get this stopped for good.

Missing you Barbaro, this time last year I was so excited about you, everyone in the press making a big deal about you skipping the FOY to wait for the Florida Derby after winning the Holy Bull. Thankful to have seen my horse of a lifetime.

Thank you for the hug. Just feeling sorry for myself I think! Sometimes this fight to stop horse slaughter is bigger than life. Being from Alabama the senators, are so for slaughter! It hurts me to know that. It is like fighting a brick wall at times. But the hurt makes me go on. And the good old boys of Alabama will know me before it's over.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at March 1, 2007 1:50 AM

Now that it's been a month and a *little* of the shock has worn off, I often think about the little things I miss:

    ACN
    Lael grass
Dr. R's sense of humor and wonderful smile
Rachel at KF always signing off with WE BELIEVE!! (for some reason, I miss this most of all)
The daily possibility of new pictures, new videos.

Time passes, and the updates from Alex don't often include the names I look for and love. I know that's normal and that Alex keeps us up on so very, very much. This is in no way a criticism. I just miss seeing the names: Barbaro, Mrs. Jackson, Michael and Peter, Edgar, Dr. R...I miss reading about them every day - although when there is news about them now, it's very, very special and exciting.

We're all adjusting. I'm grateful to be able to adjust here. Thanks, Alex, and all. Now, I must relinquish control of the computer to my husband for the evening.

I used to sit and read t.s.elliot out loud because I just loved the way it sounded. I couldn't say I understood it all, but I did like the way it felt to speak the words.

Laurie H. - I join the chorus of FOBs pleading for you to come back. I'm not sure what else to say except maybe this - We need you here. I need you here. I hope when I check back later I will find the special gift you give us each evening.

Info on that storm cat colt that died:

Sale colt who died had aneurysm
    By GLENYE CAIN OAKFORD

A $900,000 Storm Cat colt who collapsed and died after breezing Sunday at the Fasig-Tipton Calder sale's under-tack show died of an aneurysm, a necropsy has shown.

A 2-year-old son of Gone to the Moon, the colt was pointing for the March 6 select juvenile sale at Calder Race Course in Miami, Fla. Consigned by Randy Hartley and Dean De Renzo, he had just completed an eighth-mile work in 10.20 seconds when he fell and died on the track. The colt's body was taken to the University of Florida in Gainesville, where a necropsy revealed the cause of death to be an aneurysm that caused the mesenteric artery to rupture. The artery supplies blood to the intestinal tract.

I understand completely. There are days when all the awfulness that happens to animals (and to nice people) hurts my heart so badly and I get really down and discouraged. It seems such an uphill battle. Then, like you, I find the will to go on and redouble my efforts. Right now, I find that the Sailor and Rosie cams give me purpose. Just looking into my own home's five pairs of gentle fur surrounded eyes reminds me that we are all 'light in the darkness' and we must continue to speak for those that cannot. I take heart in words of Steve Irwin's father, who said, "...Pray for the animals, they just lost the best friend they ever had."

I pray, and being a fiesty Italian, I act!

Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold

Make my hands respect the things you have

Some fun things in Alex's links + other newz:

    NOBIZ:
Nobiz Like Shobiz is easy to train, Tagg explained, while Funny Cide is a challenge. "(Nobiz) is a big puppy dog compared to Funny Cide--he oozes class. If you could sit down and design a horse for the Derby mentally and physically, he's the perfect type."

    TEUFLESBERG
-- Jamie Sanders, who has been a familiar sight on the backstretch for years showing off her trick pony, has already started teaching Southwest winner Teuflesberg to do tricks. Whenever she asks “Jo Jo,” as he’s called, if he’s being a good boy, the horse nods his head, after which he gets his usual treat.

    STORMELLO FED EXED TO FLORIDA
After furiously attempting to find a flight to Florida for Stormello, trainer and co-owner Bill Currin finally was able to book a FedEx flight that is scheduled to leave California at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

    SHOWING UP
Trainer Barclay Tagg said Showing Up, the multiple Grade 1-winning turf horse, will likely begin breezing next week as he embarks on his 4-year-old campaign.

Tagg said the first two objectives for Showing Up this year are the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on Derby Day (May 5) and the Manhattan at Belmont Park on Belmont Stakes Day (June 9).

    ENDOWMENT FOR THOROUGHBRED CHARITIES
An anonymous donor has given $250,000 to the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA), the non-profit organization announced Tuesday.
The fund will be used to create a permanent endowment for the organization to assure future grant giving.
“Many of our small family-run rescue and retirement groups tell me without TCA funding, they just could not survive,” TCA President and founder Herb Moelis said. “This endowment will assure their continuity.”

    HARDSPUN OWNER BLAMES TRACK SURFACE
"Losing all the ground was part of it," he said, "but worse, he was out there on the deepest part of the racetrack the entire race. It was obvious there was a real inside speed bias.
"All I'm asking for is a level playing field, and I didn't get one. Unless I see some changes (with Oaklawn's track), I may go elsewhere (for Hard Spun's Derby prep races). Don't be surprised if we do."

I share some of the same thoughts. As we run up to the Derby, I find myself hoping that no one wins the Triple Crown this year. I've been awaiting that 3 race win along with everyone else for the longest time, but I just keep hoping that this upcoming year isn't the year that it happens. I feel like it would just be too painful for words. When I think it, it does seem childish, but I do really feel that way. We all wanted that for our Barbaro, didn't we?

I will be watching however, it's a life long habit that will be hard to break.

On funnier note, I used to work at a Catholic school and we had nuns that ran it. One of the nuns was so enamoured of horses and the Triple Crown in particular, that she used to have a tote board in her office with all of the jockies and horses running each year. She also ran the betting pool.

    REPOST FOR LAURIE H

    LAURIE H

Missed you tonight, but everyone needs a night off once and awhile. We all hope to see you tomorrow.

Today and tonight, peace and quiet reign in the Barbaro Nation. So Laurie, grab your favorite chenille blanket, and curl up in front of a warm fire. Let your furkids curl up at your feet and at your side, under the blanket. As you stroke their heads and gaze into the firelight, you see little gold and silver sparks dancing....your eyes slowly close and your head gently drops. The little gold and silver sparks are YOUR dream angels, come to tuck you in and bring you sweet dreams of a beautiful bay colt with a pink snip on his velvet nose and a white spot for speed on his heel. His legs are long, slender, strong, perfect, and they carry him effortlessly as he and his friends romp through green meadows and hills.

Good night, Laurie H. See you tomorrow.

    Lori M.,

You and I are feeling the exact same way! Thank you for not letting me feel so alone on this. I really feel like a meanie for feeling this way. It just goes to show that life at times is just not fair. Barbaro should have become the triple crown winner and in the end he didn;t even get to live in a field. Makes me so mad. The only thing that helps is the fact that he was so loved.

P.S. I love the nun story!

Lynne Brown, Cheryl Jones and Susan E.,

Thank you for your kind birthday wishes last night. Susan E. it was very sweet of you to tuck Laurie H. in last night, I hope she saw and felt it.

Laurie H. are you out there tonight? I hope so. I really missed your "tuck in" last night. Please come back.

Has someone been in contact with her? I don't have her email address, wish I did. I hope she is okay.

    Rest, Lauri H,

Take a little time off to heal and recoup.

Someone as tenderhearted as you can't help but recoil from the brash cruelty of people who don't understand what it means to try to make the world a little better...a little warmer...a little softer...a little kinder...and more beautiful.

Now you just pull that loving cover up to you, Lauri. Lift up that sweet little chin, tuck it under, and lay your head down tonight, knowing that there is an angel filled meadow just beyond your second nod.

Feel them lift you above the blues, and dance with you in their arms. They will take you to see BARBARO.

Then, with your loving heart, ask God and the angels to heal the sad people here...the ones who, even though cruel, actually know not what they do.

When you wake up, from the warm loving world of your dreams, may you be refreshed. May you be comforted, knowing that you are loved and cared for...knowing that your heart is not just your own....and that all is right.

This is our tuck-in to you, tonight, Dear and precious FOB Friend.

Just saw this on the Delaware Track site....

BARBARO MEMORIALIZED WITH DELAWARE PARK STAKES RACE

Stanton, De., Delaware Park’s Chief Operating Officer, Bill Fasy today announced that it has officially changed the name of the Leonard Richards Stakes to the Barbaro Stakes. Like the Leonard Richard Stakes, The Barbaro, will be a Grade III race for three olds and will be run July 15th during Delaware Park’s Delaware Handicap weekend, July 14 and 15. This renamed stakes race will continue to feature a guaranteed purse of $300,000.

"Our new Racing Secretary, Ismael “Izzy” Trejo, suggested the idea of The Barbaro Stakes, and we all agreed this was a terrific way to memorialize Barbaro’s legacy and to honor the Jackson family and Dr. Dean Richardson ,” said Bill Fasy. Added Trejo, “The deep admiration and love everyone felt for Barbaro was truly overwhelming. To be able to honor such a tenaciously spirited horse, whose remarkable career started here at Delaware Park in 2005, with its own Stakes race, makes the racing family here at Delaware Park extremely proud.”

I loved the story above about the nun running a betting pool and tracking the Triple Crown contenders. It reminds me of the time I converted to Catholicism over 30 years ago now. My father was pretty anti-Catholic and not at all happy about my decision--until he ran across a book on handicapping horses written by...to his great surprise, a Catholic monsignor! My dad, who never missed a day of racing at the county fair and went to Santa Anita as often as he could, was instantly won over!

    FOR LAURIE IN OHIO:

    You posted ...

ROTFL!!! Linnie, you are GOOD!!! Of course, you are preaching to the choir re the power of intention. I sent my $29 in memory of Barbaro and in honor of Dr. R. I was going to figure out a way to do so, job offer or no, but I loved your post so much I had to do it right away.

No job offer yet, just *another* interview (the third!), but it went very well, I think. Should know something from these folks Monday or Tuesday. They're really taking their good, sweet time with this process. I understand why...but I'd really like some income, please! LOL!

I hope all is well with LaurieH. I love her tuck-ins. She puts in writing what I've done with my pets every night for over 20 years, so they're especially meaningful for me.

Don't know if this will post properly. My cat Jeoffrey kept batting at the screen as I scrolled down and is now biting my typing fingers. I just wanted to let folks know about a very sweet note I received. I ordered chocolate Barbaros for my husbands birthday from Kennett Square florists and also sent a carrot basket to the research horses. I received the nicest hand written note from Libby Owen. In addition to regular donations, I think I'll keep sending carrot baskets to those horses who help carry on the mission to beat equine diseases.

Are any folks going to meet at the Barbaro Stakes? I'm afraid I won't be able to get off work for April 29... though I'm going to keep trying.

Come on sweetheart: tuck your legs up like you did when you were just a little bay nugget by La Ville Rouge's warm side. I have brought Laurie's soft blanket of clouds and stars to keep you warm tonight.

We need to send prayers of love to Laurie H. tonight--I thought many times before taking over for her just this one time. But she has so spoiled you, that I felt someone had to tuck you into your cloud for the night. We all need the sweetness of her lullabye and her goodnight to help us to sleep. I too had a tossing and turning night. And missing Laurie's tuck-in surely had something to do with that.

In my heaven, Barbaro, I snuggle you next to the baby elephants I have known. Little soft, pink-gray lost ones who tuck their chubby gray legs up as they curl their tiny trunks under their chins. Sometimes they suck their trunks like a baby's thumb, so don't let that keep you awake.

As you drift off to sleep pillowed with the elephant babies and your celestial herd, keep a warm prayer for Laurie H and send her back to us tomorrow. More people than she knows miss her. Calm her in her dreams tonight and tomorrow, send her back to us, safe in the knowledge that she is needed and loved.

We miss you so, Bobby. I hope I did OK with my substitute tuck in....and that Laurie H. will forgive the indulgence....

All wishing Rosie would foal - she's teasing you...you are not sufficiently sleep deprived..yet. The foaling elves pull mares aside when they become pregnant and teach them all the tricks to make the humans crazy! Some take advantage and others are kind to the humans. I've had mares bag up, wax, cascade out and foal within 12 hours start to finish and I've had mares drag it out for WEEKS. One I even started to call "Cow" because her udder looked like a milk cow - Don't get me wrong - I love her and she gave me wonderful babies. Best advice - keep that sense of humor!

I'm telling you... I have one mare that I watched on camera for WEEKS, every night she would act like she was in stage 1 labor - finally I couldn't take it any more and took her to her doctor - she did an exam and said, "probably another week" she called it to within a day. That mare has my number - by the time she foaled each year I was a drooling, blithering fool. She was well rested, happy and well fed. She is also responsible for three of the most beautiful, talented babies we have ever seen - all worth the wait!

    Rosie, Rosie, Rosie....

Are you laughing at us, or is that sound I hear just the big pine tree scratching on my window screen again?

I'm onto you, Rosie--you and your feathered band of brigandes.

Les poulets are not fluffing and cleaning your pen. They're sabotaging the marestare cam under the guise of friendly fowl ministrations to your quarters. And you, Rosie, you're the seemingly benign mastermind of sabotage. Those chickens can't fly. They need to stand on your back to reach the cam. And they do that while your fowl accomplice, Wilbur, distracts us with his Butterball-ish antics.

You're smart, Rosie, but we're older and we have more patience. We'll see you foal yet, my pretty. Bwahahahahahahaaaa!

When calling the committee members, the object is to ask them to please get it out of committee and to the floor for a vote. You are calling them as committee members and not as your representatives so it doesn’t matter that they are from a different state.

Have a great day and happy calling!!!!!

    TROLL SOUP ADDITION -

Add 29 heads of garlic, just in case one needs to counteract energy originating from a certain cosmic source.....

Best pot to use is either a very high quality ceramic lined pot or a very inexpensive pot that can be used ONLY for troll soup.

    Add to soup...
    a large bouquet of daisies
    Several bay laurel leaves
2 bottles of good red wine (or 4 bottles of Mad Dog 20/20)
    1 teaspoon peppercorns....

Susan E - you are right... the chickens are in on the joke.

    REPOST

    202-225-8890 FAX

    House Agriculture Committee
    Bob Ethridge NC
    202-225-4531
    202-225-5662 FAX

susan e: you made me nearly pass diet pepsi through my nose with the image of the fowl acrobatics upon Rosie's ample buttocks encouraging the Rosie Cam into electronic oblivion.

Between that and the parboiled troll--oy what a smell--I will curl up under my many blankets among the 10 greyhounds and two Irish lurchers, and gaze at the moon--how did it get almost full so fast, my darlings, I will ask them, as I float off to the sussurations (one of my very favorite words) of my hounds as they sigh and snore their way into sleep.

Ken Z. yes: i was lucky to have elephants in my life...I feel ancient some nights, but then I think of helping to bathe our Nini and watch the great heave and swell of her first calf--who also refused to be born on time--as we scrubbed her massive sides...he was possessed for suds and swirling hoses when he finally emerged into the
world....I know that he remembered his mother's baths every morning. He is now in England, making grandcalves for his sire and dam...clever baby that he is...That was all magic. Just like watching Barbaro graze outside at NBC for the first time, watching him fly through the air in the Derby. I jumped out of my chair as he pulled ahead and went into that divine 4th gear he had--Edgar close to his beautiful neck, I said--with all the rest of the world--OH MY GOD> We are so lucky. We lived in his time. We are his legacy.

They say greyhounds are in the air 75% of the time they run. Bobby can wake and fly through the heavens with so very many greyhounds when he tires of his celestial equine host. I send all God's creatures to a gentle rest now and hope Laurie H is sleeping the sweet sleep of greyhounds, foals and fat, pink, baby elephants.

More work to be done in Bobby's name tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow......sleep well, Barbaro Nation. Nothing can divide us.

Well, another night has passed. I hope you and all of your loved ones are safe and warm with another winter storm coming your way. Please know that I have always appreciated you and will always remember your gentle words to Barbaro and how they helped soothe me and calm our worries each night. You need a break now, too. You deserve it, but all of your words will remain in my heart forever right next to my memories of Barbaro. Rest well, Laurie, you are a kind and gentle soul.

Susan E was right - today was a good day.
Alex gave us his amazing insight into the daily life at Fair Hill
We are blessed to get the latest and best new in the industry.
    Work on Anti-Slaughter Legislation continued
We raised more money for Laminitis research
More racetracks are considering safer surfaces.
Prayers for Real Quiet are helping.
We are still showing the world what Barbaro can do.
    FOB's continue to heal.

    Not so great...
We had a second evening without Laurie H.
Many of us miss her and worry about her.
Our more personal posts are our grief and hope that she will come back.

No one who watches this site would doubt that we are driven and inspired to make a difference. I also think most would applaud our sense of humor - I for one am going to continue to laugh as I go through this life...

...now where is the salt - the troll soup needs seasoning.

Nah, no troll this time. Just a difference of opinion. We've had a pleasant two days....I'm going to bed without soup tonight.

Patti Hope your birthday was wonderful

Lori M it's so good to have you here

Lyn, Lynz, Lynne, Otherlyn Linnie (wow that is confusing)LindaH,LindaA, Heather and Dixie, SusanH, Debbie, Barb and Skyler, MikeC if you are still here, Harriette who is probably sleeping, Ken, Ashley, Barb, Sally, Amby, Sherry, Jacalyn, BarbM Glenda Kathie SpiritHorse, Lisa, Marky, Phyllis, Ro and Susan and gosh I HOPE I didn't leave anyone out, this is for Laurie H and all of you and whoever else is reading

Hay bArbaro Did you have fun today? Did you meet Phoenix? I bet he has a lot of things to tell you. You and Apache, and Peanut, the little foal, listen to his stories. Did you meet Storm Cat's Colt? he wasn't much younger than you. The older ones will have so much to share with you

Felix seems to really like wearing his best kiddeninnasoot wear, doesn't he? All shiny and elegant. You all are so beautiful in hevvin, I hope that we can catch glimpses of the sun on your bright shining mane and looooooooonnnnnnng tail.

I think of my dream of Sunday morning in great detail, reliving and relishing every moment. Strange that my own girls didn't visit me before, but they did last night. Did you send them? Angel is almost as tall as you are, and she has those same deep, knowing eyes. Ginger is as sweet as she was when she was here, always nickering, great with the kisses. It was only a moment, but they were with me last night. Were you running with Fog? My girls loved to play but they could never keep up with you and The Fog, not even in hevvin. They are better at "nip rump and runnaway reeeel fas". They were playing that silly game when I first saw them in my dream last night.

Those of us you left behind have to sleep now. We have so much work to do. Some of us who love you are sleeping now. So instead of me tucking you in, which couldn't compare to Laurie's tuck in anyway, could you please tuck us in? And maybe Dr. Dean, your mom and dad, Michael and Alex and everyone who loves you? That's a big job, but in hevvin, all things are possible

We'll pull our covers up around our necks, nestle our heads in our pillows, with our kiddens and doggeees next to us. We'll close our eyes and fall asleep, and turn thoughts of you into dreams of you. I wish that all of us who love you have a dream as I did. It was magical.

Good Night sweet boy. Miss you. Love you soooooooooooooooooooooo much

    Aunty Cheryl

    Best newS in the industry...

How much Eye of Newt goes into troll soup? Does it turn the broth an "off" color?

To all the horses, all the hounds and all the rest..may you have a peaceful and safe night. Good night Barbaro Nation. Good morning to those in Europe and safe gallops at dawn to Alex and all.

    Laurie H.
I miss our late night postings, your tuck-ins and your connection. On the night before we lost Barbaro you and I were up all night, together, feeling the same things as Pogo screamed to the East. I hope your absence is temporary and that you continue to believe. I miss you.

I agree... the soup is not ready, nor is it needed now - unless making it helps Laurie H heal (which is the reason I began the recipe tonight). Should it be needed, it will be ready - and if a bowl makes Laurie feel better then the stench and the stained soup pot will have been worth it.

My horses are safely tucked in, my dog is snoring (being a hound), it is about to snow and Barbaro has touched my heart. Life is good.

Posted by: lynz at March 1, 2007 5:58 AM

Auntie Cheryl ..... glad I stayed up late tonight to receive your message before tucking myself in ....... sweet and amazing dreams to you also .............I think, if we can continue to tuck each other in, it just might be ok.

Good morning and Happy St David's Day to all of you with Welsh connections.

The weather is fine here at the moment, but torrential rain is forecast. The horses will soon be having swimming competitions instead of races if this continues.
I'm sorry to see that Discreet Cat has a temperature and so will miss today's race in Dubai: Cat to Go Straight for World Cup. I trust this is just a minor blip. I hope all those that do run come home safely.

Liz (UK) - Too bad about Discreet Cat but I admire his connections for doing the right thing. Also, thanks for the message from Jo. If you are in contact with her again, please tell her we miss her this time of day!

We are preparing for a major snowstorm here in Maine - sounds like a repeat of our Valentine's Day "blizzard". I hope all who experience this before it gets to us are safe.
