Barbaro Updates: 220

updates are now here.

Update 1545: NoBiz worked today, a half in 47 and change. His final piece of work in preparation for saturday's Fountain of Youth. Barclay is pretty high on his horse: Tagg touting Nobiz Like Shobiz entering Fountain of Youth, excerpt:

"Michael Matz had reason to be confident with Barbaro last year," Tagg said. "He had one of the most fabulous horses anyone had seen in a long time and he has him in great position for the Triple Crown. I think my horse could be on that same level."

This is high praise from Barclay who is typically conservative. Barclay was also one for high praise for Barbaro early in his career, after watching him win the Laurel Futurity.

Update 1544: A tough day in Dubai for horses acquired from US interests. Discreet Cat was scratched due to a slight fever this morning. Thor's Echo was beaten more than four lengths in his first start since his DeFrancis win (when he narrowly beat the Fair Hill trained Diabolical who is scheduled to run on saturday at Gulfstream). Kentucky Derby hopeful Day Pass could only manage fourth in his first start beyond a mile. Argentine classic winner stars at Nad al Sheba, Discreet Cat scratched

Update 1543: Another great morning this morning to be riding horses at Fair Hill. Given that there is plenty of rain forecast to arrive over the next 24 hours all horses were to go out to the track today (no shedrowing as that is what we will likely be left to do tomorrow) so we did not start riding until just before 7 am. My first set was Hawty Creek to the track. We were first on the track, and for a change I decided to jog her the wrong way back to the five eighths pole, turn her around and gallop her. She trained well. By the time we left the track the track was very busy for sure. My next two sets were Tim's, Slew (with Tim on Nonpariel) and Nautical Agent, who I had not yet ridden on the track. She went nicely, jogging and hacking two turns. I then rode four more finishing up riding only a little before 11 am. Ron, the blacksmith, then came to shoe Hawty Creek. She had not been shod in about six weeks and was certainly ready for new shoes. We also entered her for sunday. Philadelphia Park took our entry, lets see if the race goes (it was an extra) and then lets see if they let us ship into Philadelphia Park to run. I would assume they would not have taken the entry if they were sure they were not letting any horses in from Maryland. Anyway, all in all, a very busy and productive morning. Now lets wait for the rain!

Update 1542: Delaware Park has named a stakes race for Barbaro: BARBARO MEMORIALIZED WITH DELAWARE PARK STAKES RACE:

Delaware Park's Chief Operating Officer, Bill Fasy today announced that it has officially changed the name of the Leonard Richards Stakes to the Barbaro Stakes. Like the Leonard Richard Stakes, The Barbaro, will be a Grade III race for three olds and will be run July 15th during Delaware Park's Delaware Handicap weekend, July 14 and 15. This renamed stakes race will continue to feature a guaranteed purse of $300,000.

"Our new Racing Secretary, Ismael "Izzy" Trejo, suggested the idea of The Barbaro Stakes, and we all agreed this was a terrific way to memorialize Barbaro's legacy and to honor the Jackson family and Dr. Dean Richardson ," said Bill Fasy. Added Trejo, "The deep admiration and love everyone felt for Barbaro was truly overwhelming. To be able to honor such a tenaciously spirited horse, whose remarkable career started here at Delaware Park in 2005, with its own Stakes race, makes the racing family here at Delaware Park extremely proud."

Great news from Delaware Park. This will of course not have any effect on our planned April 29 visit to celebrate Barbaro.

Discreet Cat is no longer running today at Nad al Sheba after spiking a slight temperature this morning: CAT TO GO STRAIGHT FOR WORLD CUP. The plan now is to go straight to the Dubai World Cup where he will meet Invasor and others. HRTV is showing the races today from Nad al Sheba.

Tim and Alex, again thank you for continuing this forum to get up-to-date information.

RE: UPENN'S Rund Raising Partnership Proposals
"Race for the Cure"

Here is a copy of the e-mail I received from Mary R. Berger, Director of Annual Giving who was gracious enough to let me post it.

Michelle,

Thank you for caring. The form is written and we are working on getting it posted to our website. Other than our website, one way to stay connected is through our magazine, Bellwether. All donors will automatically receive an issue. You might want to remind our message board supporters that even a small contribution to any of our funds will put them on our Bellwether mailing list.
The next issue, due out late Spring, will include a Barbaro feature that I think they all will love. The New Bolton Center also offers an annual lecture to those who contribute to the Friends of New Bolton Center Fund....so I encourage
everyone to stay connected by becoming donors at any level.

Gratefully yours,

Mary

Take care all

*********Anti-slaughter Postcard*********

Hi all-

Edie and I have created an anti slaughter postcard as another method of correspondence with our senators and representatives.
It is eye catching, brief, should get through security quickly, and will be inexpensive to reproduce and mail.

See the ***Anti slaughter postcard*** thread
under Anti Slaughter Issues folder on the forum. If you can't access the forum, send an email to antislaughterlobby@earthlink.net for details on how to download...

We hope you find this useful.
Let's get this legislation passed for Barbaro!

Christian and Edie

P.S. Any feedback regarding getting postcards printed, cost of printing etc. plus any questions,
please email. Thanks!

Good Thursday morning Alex, Barbaro and FsOB,

I'm hoping the news today about Real Quiet is good news.

Rosie, Rosie - still waiting. Hopefully the camera will be back up before any action begins.

Marge - where are you this morning? Bad weather in your area?

I'll check back for the Committee members list for today. Please take the few minutes (and it is very few) to give them a call.

Have a great day all.

The Barbaro Stakes...how awesome. Awesome, just like Barbaro, the Jacksons and Dr. Richardson.

Hiya, FsOB: It's a sunny morning here on the banks of the Thames. Ms. Nikita woke me at 4:30 AM to go outside. I suspect that the neighbour's cat was responsible; she is such a tease(argh!). We expect some snow tonight and then a huge gale tomorrow. This weekend I have to write again to our CT-2nd District freshman Congressman. And I promise to check on the nominations process for the annual Profiles in Courage Award. Wouldn't it be great to nominate Mayor Paula Bacon down in Kaufman, TX?

#### To Liz in the UK: Thanks for letting us know that you hear from Jo. Please let her know how I miss her stories of life in Thornton le Dale, Yorks.
To CJ: Thanks for the corrected address for Mayor Paula Bacon in Kaufman, TX. What a stalwart, courageous woman she is. Our country could use more elected public officials like her!
A good day to all FsOB! Peace, RMH ####

You had an interesting idea about the fee for horse ownership. I've copied your post into a document so I can read it carefully. Easy for me to say since I don't own horses, and many of you do, but I do think the fee for the horse's final outcome needs to be captured at the point where it can't be avoided. However, I can just imagine the reaction of those folks in Texas who already chafe at the idea of the gov't telling them what to do with their "property"! I think they think they're still living in the wild west.

Lit up the board with candles last night for Big B, and will make my calls today.

That's great about DelPk naming a stakes for Barbaro!

Anyone else that wants it, please email me as well. I have had over 100 requests which surprised me. Many are people I didn't recognize.

Not good news here...a winter storm is heading our way here in southwestern Ontario Canada with lots of freezing rain expected...enough to cause power outages as it supposed to coat the power lines.Schools have been cancelled as buses will not be able to handle the icy roads safely. Then later this evening we could get snow.

Hope Rosie doesn't have that baby during the storm as my computer will go down with the power !!!!

STAY WARM...everyone in the path of the storm...PREPARE for power outages!! BLANKETS etc..FLASHLIGHTS and WARM CLOTHING !!!

How wonderful that Del Park has named a Stakes Race for Barbaro !!!! It swells the heart to know that Barbaro is not forgotten, but rather honored and loved as time goes on !

I hope that all of this makes The Jacksons and Dr. Richardson so proud.

I didn't realize that our donating to The Laminitis Fund would get us a copy of Bellwether. That is terrific. The Spring issue will undoubtedly be emotional and poignant.

Have a wonderful day FOB's.

Good Morning FOBs...
Here we go again...!

As many of you know, we started a new strategy this week. HR503 is in two committees in the House and S311 is in one committee in the Senate. Because a large volume of calls at once makes a big impression, were going to post the names of three committee members each day in the hopes that everyone will call those three people. We will be posting one name from each committee.

So in addition to contacting your OWN representative and two senators, please take a moment to call the following three committee members on THURSDAY, MARCH 1

Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation
Kay Bailey Hutchinson
202-224-5922
202-224-0776 FAX

House Committee on Energy and Commerce

202-225-8698 FAX

House Agriculture Committee
J Dennis Hastert IL
202-225-2976
202-225-0697 FAX

Dont forget to contact your OWN representatives and two senators and ask them to co-sponsor.
When calling the committee members, the object is to ask them to please get it out of committee and to the floor for a vote. You are calling them as committee members and not as your representatives so it doesnt matter that they are from a different state.

Have a great day and happy calling!!!!!

When you call kay Bailey Hutchison's office, ask for Brian Knapp. The last time I talked with him a couple of days ago, he said that since it seemed Texas was closing the slaughter houses through state law that was all that was needed. I explained to him that there is still one in Illinois and that the transport of horses to Canada and Mexico must be stopped through a national law. I really think we have a chance with KBH. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation

Kay Bailey Hutchinson TX
202-224-5922
202-224-0776 FAX

David Vitter LA
202-224-4623
202-228-5061 Fax

House Committee on Energy and Commerce

Frank Lucas OK
202-225-5565
202-225-8698 FAX

John Shimkus IL
202-225-5271
202-225-5880 Fax

House Agriculture Committee

J Dennis Hastert IL
202-225-2976
202-225-0697 FAX

Timothy V. Johnson IL
202-225-2371
202-226-0791 Fax

Dont forget to contact your OWN representatives and two senators and ask them to co-sponsor.
When calling the committee members, the object is to ask them to please get it out of committee and to the floor for a vote. You are calling them as committee members and not as your representatives so it doesnt matter that they are from a different state.

Have a great day and happy calling!!!!!

Shelley and Debra

Ditto!

Finally got through to Sen. Hutchinson...line was busy...that is good.

Something I do not understand..they talk about overpopulation of dogs, cats, horses, etc...
If you have a family...you know how many children you can afford...and want..If you have animals...you should know how many can you afford..slow down on breeding.

They are concern what would happen to unwanted horses...slow down the breeding...simple.

And as for stimulants to make dogs, horses run faster...as my husband and I was talking...some animals are born to run..some not...let the ones who can run...run on their own ability...what a messed up world...

Good morning, my beloved Angel Boys. I hear you're plotting to "empty a troff" full of rain, ice and snow all over many parts of the country today. Take it easy guys, okay?

Good morning, Barbaro Nation! Happy March! Here in St. Louis, we have a hybrid lion/lamb weather situation. Sounds like March is coming in like a lion for many of you--good luck, I pray you stay safe and warm. Hang in there. Spring is three short weeks away!

Get well, Discreet Cat. I hope this is nothing serious. I'm so glad your humans are letting you stay in bed today.

Our Lady of Perpetual Pregnancy and her merry Band of Feathered Brigandes have succeeded in disabling the MHR cam yet again. This situation is taking on a distinctly Orwellian aspect....

Barbaro, you deserve all this and so much more.

I would love to see your half brother win one of them this year.

Joan - I don't get it either. When I read that Real Quiet was booked to 80 mares this year, all I could think was, "No wonder he's having a problem with his hind legs"!

But, then again, I am no expert, and am open to reasonable explanations.

Sometimes I feel like shouting, "It's the humans, stupid, not the animals".

Good Morning All. Great news that another race is being named for Barbaro. Wouldn't it be great if every TB track across the country named one after him!

Here's the info once again about Mayor Paula Bacon of Kaufman, TX. Re-cross-posting this [with corrections] from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter Yahoo Group board. I want to give this maximum exposure. Here goes:

Dear Friends Against Horse Slaughter:

Mayor Paula Bacon of Kaufman, Texas has been one of the true leaders opposing horse slaughter. Her term will expire in May, but she knows her work in not finished and is ready to start her re-election campaign.

Supporters of the horse slaughter plant funded efforts to defeat her in her last re-election. She needs our financial help.

Mayor Bacon has been on a number of national news networks and numerous radio and TV stations telling of the horror of horse slaughter and the stigma it has brought to her town. Instead of growing in prosperity as many communities surrounding Dallas are doing, Kaufman is simply known as, "That place where they kill horses." Mayor Bacon has led the city in repeated efforts to stop the horse slaughter plant's numerous violations to the expensive sewer system, and to control the plant's stench that falls over the town. When the plant ignored these efforts, she asked the City Council to declare Dallas Crown a "nuisance," to, in effect, close them down. These efforts, as so many other efforts, have been stopped by a myriad of lawyers throwing paper at the court system.

Mayor Bacon has fought beside us for years. As an elected official, she is perhaps the most powerful voice we have coming from one of the three communities where horse slaughter plants exist in the United States. It has taken a lot of courage, but she has taken a strong stance against the shame that horse slaughter represents. Now it's time to give her our support for all she has done and continues to do. We need her in office, to continue her fight against Dallas Crown and to support our battle in Washington DC as the Federal Bills come to the floor for a final victory.

Your contribution, no matter how small, will ensure that her strong voice will continue in our battle. Please visit

to donate by credit card or PayPal, or send your contribution to:

I appreciate your time and appreciate your support of Mayor Paula Bacon.

Hey Everyone,

Help! I am confused on who to call regarding the anti-slaughter legislation. I called last fall and the way I understood it, it got through the House but never got to the Senate. Am I supposed to be calling my House Representatives again? Or just my Senators? Are we starting back over from the very beginning? Sorry, I'm not up on the procedures but want to call the right people. Is there a specific statement to say to make sure they know exactly what I am requesting?

So wonderful to hear another race being named for Barbaro!!!

I watched the birth of the foal at Highmeadows last night - my first! And I didn't pass out and fall out of my chair! Okay, I did hyperventilate just a wee bit, but...I'm ready for Rosie!

Linnie: Why, yes, I have read Wayne Dyer! LOL! Wading my way through Debbie Ford right now.

Dora J. Crow: Thank you for posting the reminder about the laminitis challenge! I made a note last week to send a check out, put it on my desk...and now it's under some pile somewhere. Goals for today: Clean off desk, mail check to GrandmaBea!

I see Our Lady of Perpetual PRIVACY and her merry marauders have disabled the cam again...LOL!

Busy day, so better run. Will be checking back for updates on Her Pregnantness and Real Quiet.

Great news about the Barbaro Stakes. Hopefully they will continue to give our boy whatever glittering prizes they can think up.

Senator Lott is on board? Could our calls yesteday have done it? Everyone, please call the target list each day as well as your own legislators. In asking the target committee members to move the bill, we may be reminding them that they had planned to re-file their co-sponsorship papers.

I am so glad to know that Jo/UK is still out there. Jo, if you are reading this, please come back as soon as you can. We miss you, and we are all in this together.

Cheryl, thanks for your nice post last night. We needed that.

Laurie H. if you are reading this, I really don't think any of that had anything to do with you. Someone is very unhappy and is expressing her unhappiness in disruptive ways instead of directly. Please don't let it change what you do for us here.

Ruthie
We are starting all over again. Call your senators and representative and ask that they co-sponsor the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (if thtey have not already done so). You will also see on this page, a target list for the day, of committee members. Call these legislators and ask them to move the bill quickly to the floor. Thanks so much for your help with this! Ask if you have other questions, and someone here will post a response.

Maybe someone with contacts at Delaware Park could suggest that July 15th be Barbaro Day at the track.

Perhaps donations to the Barbaro Fund or to the Laminitis Fund could be encouraged. Maybe someone from New Bolton would be willing to set up a booth and take donations.

Hopefully, the anti slaughter legislation will be passed by then. But, if not, this would be a good opportunity to pass out brochures or post cards about horse slaughter. The information could encourage people to contact legislators and give them instructions on how to contact legislators.

Also any horse rescue organizations in the area could pass out literature.

Of course this is all pending the permission of the track. But, I think it would be great PR for the track. It would demonstrate that they care for the welfare of the horses in the racing industry.

Just a suggestion.

As stated by Marilyn we have to start from scratch. Fortunately both the House Bill HR 503 and Senate Bill S311 were reintroduced shortly after the new year began. We are targeting Committee members every day who presently have not co-sponsored. During the day you will also find Blue Links posted which are useful for getting names and numbers. Thanks so much for all your help. We absolutely MUST stop the slaughter of our horses this year.

### Otherlyn , I am intrigued by your post re an idea for licensing last night. I agree that some may be quite against such a notion but I see the potential. I have experience in legislative drafting and was wondering if you would like to discuss development of the idea with me offline with an idea to creating "Model legislation" that could be 'shopped around" to various stakeholders and legislators in each state. (with the help of FOBs of course!)Sometimes a seed planted in one city or state begins to bear fruit everywhere. You can reach me at TerriC324@hotmail.com if interested. Prayers for all creatures great and small

I am overjoyed that Erin Brennan was only food poisoned. I was so worried about that child! (not that it is fun, I have had it as well, i.v. and all)

I have missed all you gals/guys so much. I never realize how upset I get until I am away from you. You are truly the best friends a gal can have. love you all, dang it!

I spoke with Grandma Bea this a.m. She has the sweetest voice! She sounds a little too young to be calling herself a Grandma, IMHO. She is a precious sweetheart, that one is! If ya'll get a chance to speak with her, you will see what I mean.

Rita C. Bangs-You are getting the card/ck I sent you , anyway, do not argue with me, you shall not win!! LOL Love you lots!

Hi everyone!

There was a story in my local paper today that I thought might cheer up some souls out there. I will type it as it was written. It was in the Norwich Bulletin (Connnecticut) local section.

QUICK RESPONSE SAVES HORSE'S LIFE

BY:ED DUNN

The sun was bright, but the ground was wet, mud soaked with melting snow, when Tom Shakun Wednesday recounted his tale of a fallen horse, a timely rescue and a blessing.

Shakun, 70, of Franklin has had Stradivarius, a German rhinelander, since the 22-year-old horse was 9. So, when the animal slipped on ice and could not get up in the field not far from the barn where he is kept, Shakun, who has a heart condition and recently had a new stent installed, was more than upset.

A call to the Franklin Fire Department was answered promptly by "the whole crew," according to Shakun.

"I can't say enough for our volunteer fire company. All those guys have other jobs, and 10 or 15 of them were here," Shakun said.

Fire Cheif Bill Hayes said that day - Feb. 19 - a Monday, was very cold, "with wind that made it feel like 7 to 10 below," when they responded to Shakun's call for help.

Firefighters worked four hours trying to get Stradivarius upright, according to Hayes.

"We wrapped him in blankets and heat packs to stabilize him and keep him warm, but his heart rate dropped," Hayes said.

He said the horse could not survive much longer lying on the bitterly cold ground.

Then, firefighter Dennis Raymond, owner of Raymond's Auto Repair, thought to fetch his wrecker truck. Placing the winch crane's slings beneath the horse, the firefighters got Stradivarius to his feet.

They brought the horse to the barn, where they took off the slings and led him inside. There, veterinarian Dr. Alison Herr-Oliver of the Salem Valley Veterinary Clinic gave Stradivarius an intravenous drip and soon the horse was eating, Shakun said.

Herr-Oliver said when she arrived Stradivarius had "about a half-hour of life left," according to Shakun.

Shakun, whose forebears were Russian, has owned horses all his life. On his 50 acres, he cares for Stradivarius - and 16 horses that board there.

In recounting the ordeal of Stradivarius, Shakun spoke of his parents arrival in Franklin in the 1920's, and said both his grandfathers were horsemen. At the turn of the century, one grandfather raised black horses for the czar.

Reflecting on Stradivarius' mishap, Shakun said he is Orthodox Christian and, two weeks ago, the Rev. Jason Vansuch of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Norwich visited.

"Father Vansuch blessed all the horses," Shakun said, as Stradivarius pushed his nose into a heap of dry straw on the wet ground by the barn and nibbled contentedly. END

I thought it was a nice story to share with everyone. I hope it brings a smile to someone's face today. Good news about Dodd and Liebermann co-sponsering!! I guess I am a "lurker" here. I have posted once or twice. I just want everyone to know how wonderful I think you all are and how much you have helped me and so many others with our grief. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!!

links to a 2004 article which is as timely and relevant now as then; only the number of the pending House Bill is different. I am posting the contents here because the statements by Nick Zito and by Dr. Lydia Gray, DVM, and some of the statistics, can be used as talking points with legislators who are not yet in favor of the horse slaughter ban.

February 5, 2004 - (Washington, DC) Representatives of the National Horse Protection Coalition (NHPC) were surprised to read a report issued recently by the Horsemen’s Council of Illinois defending horse slaughter and attacking those who support legislation to end the cruel practice. The Coalition, comprised of horse industry organizations and leaders, veterinarians, equine rescues and humane groups, is dedicated to ending horse slaughter through passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 857) and owner education.

“When I learned that the Illinois Horsemen’s Council supports horse slaughter and says a ban is going to hurt our industry, I was taken aback,” says Nick Zito, national spokesman for the NHPC and a two-time Kentucky Derby winning trainer. “I have been a horseman almost all of my life, it is what I do every day, and to see them claim to represent the ‘horse industry’, you can imagine I was a bit surprised. Horse slaughter is a dirty mark on our industry, which is why support for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act and efforts to ban slaughter are growing.”

A diverse group of leading organizations from the horse industry publicly and strongly oppose horse slaughter including the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Churchill Downs, Inc., Arlington Park Racetrack, the Texas Thoroughbred Association, the Utah Quarter Horse Association, the NY Racing Association and the NJ Racing Commission to mention a few.

Dr. Lydia Gray, DVM, Executive Director of the Illinois-based Hooved Animal Humane Society, stated, “As an equine veterinarian who also investigates abuse cases, I find it disingenuous that its defenders claim horse slaughter is a form of humane euthanasia akin to veterinary-administered euthanasia. The idea that cruelty cases will increase if horse slaughter is banned is just absurd, and couldn’t be further from the truth. Horse slaughter and equine abuse are two separate and distinct forms of cruelty. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act presents a clear opportunity to end one form of cruelty, and anyone who truly cares about horses should embrace this opportunity.”

Numbers just released in Illinois show that equine abuse has dropped dramatically during the year in which the state’s only horse slaughter plant has been closed. A similar report from California shows that equine cruelty cases have not increased since the state banned horse slaughter in 1998. In addition, numbers obtained from the California Bureau of Livestock Identification show that horse theft has dropped by 34% since the ban took effect in 1998.

“Banning horse slaughter is not only good for the industry, it is the right thing to do for the horses,” says Zito.

Corrine, that's a great story about Stradivarius!
So many there to help the old guy survive!

Glad the Rosie cam is up and running this morning. It was hard to sleep last night not knowing how she was doing. I did see the new filly born at Sagebrush Paints last night. That was exciting, but won't compare to the birth of one of our very own FOB rescues!

Prayers for the recovery of Real Quiet.

Thank you Alex, for everything. I get a lump in my throat about "anything Barbaro" but the "Barbaro Stakes" really has the tears going. Just wish I could be there on April 29th.

###Corrine, thanks for such an uplifting story. I'm so happy it had a good outcome.

So much good stuff today in the Barbaro house. I really hope that senator Lott is on board I called many times yesterday before I got through: The calls and emails are working. Today I followed Shannon's advice and have been an emailing fool. Off to call my beloved Georgia senators.

The stories, all the saved horses, the stakes named after the champ, progress in the anti slaughter campaign have me donkey dancing in the office. Gracias Barbaro. God bless this site.

SUSAN E - there was a wonderful "horse" story on our local tv station a couple of months ago...it seems that all the fire departments in "horsey areas" of the state have been given specific training on how to get horses out of burning barns...it was very heartwarming, especially the interviews with some of the volunteer firefighters who had, prior to these training session, absolutely no experience with horses!

####RE-POST

Fellow FOBs:

I see that Alex has an arrangement for royalties from Barbaro books purchased through his site to go to horse charities.

I have a similar arrangement with zazzle.com. When Barbaro products that I designed (GlendaJo) are purchased, a royalty will go to horse rescue (through me).

If you have any questions on how this works, please email me.

Topics covered by the designs include Anti-Slaughter, Funding Laminitis Research, the Barbaro Effect, FOBs "Paying It Forward", and much more.

If you have design ideas that you would like me to explore, please either post here or email me and I will do what I can to get the design you want added to my line.

Thanks,

Glenda Jo O'Brien

P.S. Special thanks to Rosemary, Nancy, and Laurie.

Check the thread "Barbaro Products" on the discussion board for feedback from people who have purchased some of the products.

HELLO BARBARO NATION!!

I just want to, again, thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for your continued enthusiasm and support of $29 on the 29th Campaign in Barbaro's honor and memory.

LET'S LICK LAMINITIS!!!

And ... since we did NOT have a 29th day in February, I get an extra day in March to do some fundraising for the 'latecomers' who may not have seen my reminders over the last couple of days.

So, even though today is "officially" March 1, in Barbaro Nation it can alternately be deemed February 29th ... So C'MON LET'S DO IT!! Everyone who thought they missed the boat yesterday ... you have another chance to board the ship and take the February voyage. Don't miss out ... here's your last chance for February 29th ...

TODAY IS 'THE' DAY! IT IS "BARBARO 29 DAY" ... UNOFFICIALLY the 29th of February in Barbaro Nation!!!

AND IT IS A VERY SPECIAL DAY FOR ALL OF US!

WHY?

BECAUSE ... Today is the day that WE get to HONOR THE LOVING MEMORY OF OUR BELOVED BARBARO IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY!!!

HOW? "LET'S LICK LAMINITIS!!!"

Donate your $29 for Barbaro!! DO IT TODAY!!!

To celebrate March 1st, today's list now has two calls to each committee member, for a grand total of 6 calls, plus your own reps if you haven't already...

Here it goes:

Shelley A had computer problems and cant get

Good Morning FOBs...

Here we go again...!

As many of you know, we started a new strategy this week. HR503 is in two committees in the House and S311 is in one committee in the Senate.

So in addition to contacting your OWN representative and two senators, please take a moment to call the following six committee members on THURSDAY, MARCH 1

Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation

House Committee on Energy and Commerce

Frank Lucas OK
202-225-5565
202-225-8698 FAX

John Shimkus IL
202-225-5271

202-225-0697 FAX

Timothy V. Johnson IL
202-225-2371
202-226-0791 Fax

Dont forget to contact your OWN representatives and two senators and ask them to co-sponsor.
When calling the committee members, the object is to ask them to please get it out of committee and to the floor for a vote. You are calling them as committee members and not as your representatives so it doesnt matter that they are from a different state.

Have a great day and happy calling!!!!!

Shelley and Debra

Ditto!

Dora, I just read your post:

Hi Everyone, here is the latest - Barbaro's $3,000.00 Miracle stands at $2,900.00 received to date for the Laminitis Fund. Can we make it to $3,000.00 and get another two thousand from the anonymous donor I spoke about previously.

Anyone interested in making this miracle happen please send a check to me: Bea Gobee, 373 SAW CREEK ESTATES, BUSHKILL, PA 18324. The deadline is March 17th.

Thanks to everyone who participated to date. Recipes are being mailed out, please be patient with me - 42 sets have been mailed out to date.

FYI-Monday & Tuesday next week I will be totally out of pocket due to work related obligations. Will not have access to e mail for two days. Hate to see what work and home e mail will look like upon my return.

Hopefully there will be at least $100.00 in my mail box to put us over the top for the $3,000.00. Again, thank you all.

There is a wonderful, beautiful STAR IN THE SKY, who carriest the name BARBARO that is FOREVER, shining down on us and will NEVER, EVER go away. We treasure that star. Grandma Bea, Ladee Elizabeth & Remington Barbaro Gobee.

I couldn't help but be 'amazed' that you have thus far received "$2,900" for the Barbaro Miracle. You want to make it $3,000 but look again at that figure, Dora ... it's exactly $2900!! 29!! Barbaro's Number!!! That figure is very significant ... Barbaro is pulling the strings ... you have exactly $2900 for this Miracle because that's all you need in his name! The number 29!!! Think about it!!!

Now, I must plead ignorance here .... what is this all about? I don't know anything about this so if there is a thread somewhere in the forum, please point me to it. I am so proud and happy for all of you raising this amount of money for laminitis research. Together we will all make a huge difference!!!

You raised $2900! Barbaro's Number! That's exactly why you have that amount!!! It's serendipity from Barbaro up in Equine Heaven! No coincidence whatsoever!!!! Donate this $2900 to laminitis research ... Bobby has given you his blessing with this amount!!

Linnie - It was on the DB under the title, "Barbaro's $3000.00 Miracle". We were asked to raise $3,000.00 in order to acquire an additional, "matching grant" of $2,000.00.

This is a dumb question about horses that I've been wondering about. Alex writes:

"My first set was Hawty Creek to the track. We were first on the track, and for a change I decided to jog her the wrong way back to the five eighths pole, turn her around and gallop her"

How does one tell a horse that you want her to jog, or to gallop. Is it the way you hold the reins, a noise that you make, what. Maybe one of the horsey people on this site can tell me. Sorry to be so dumb, but I've been wondering and decided to ask.

Hello Nation - unusual for me to post during the day but I have a question: How do you respond when folks talk about all the unwanted horses and where they go if they don't go to slaughter. Don't misunderstand this post - I am against slaughter, I just don't know what to say when folks ask this question. I know that this is one of the main reasons AAEP is not in the Anti-Slaughter camp. Breeding horses with purpose is one thing but I'm afraid there are a lot of horse owners who still breed "to see the miracle of birth, etc." without having a set purpose for having a mare reproduce. Surely the FOB's have an answer for me?

###Anita, It is usually done with your leg. Different squeezes mean different things. You can also train a horse to respond to voice commands. They are smart little critters.

Has anyone heard from Laurie H?

Don?t forget to contact your OWN representatives and two senators and ask them to co-sponsor.
When calling the committee members, the object is to ask them to please get it out of committee and to the floor for a vote. You are calling them as committee members and not as your representatives so it doesn?t matter that they are from a different state.

Have a great day and happy calling!!!!!

Shelley and Debra

Ditto!

Cheers,
Friar Tuck

To read more on the training that emergency response teams get for horse rescue visit: www.hagyard.com and click on emergency response. Hagyard is a wonderful clinic in Kentucky that does an awesome job on training the fire fighters!

I really, really think there's a chance to get Kay Baily Hutchinson to co-sponsor. If you only do one thing today, please call her office!!

Unwanted horses

# lynz is a good site.

A study of the relationship between Horse Slaughter and reported cases of Abuse and Neglect
By John M. Holland, is also good!

Thank you, Debbie L.A. and C. Jaffe, for posting the 2004 article with the following excellent quote:

"Dr. Lydia Gray, DVM, Executive Director of the Illinois-based Hooved Animal Humane Society, stated, 'As an equine veterinarian who also investigates abuse cases, I find it disingenuous that its defenders claim horse slaughter is a form of humane euthanasia akin to veterinary-administered euthanasia. The idea that cruelty cases will increase if horse slaughter is banned is just absurd, and couldn't be further from the truth. Horse slaughter and equine abuse are two separate and distinct forms of cruelty. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act presents a clear opportunity to end one form of cruelty, and anyone who truly cares about horses should embrace this opportunity."

----

ILLINOIS FOBs, maybe you can make sure that Dr. Gray has appropriate opportunities to speak out publicly against slaughter, now, while the Illinois legislature considers its proposed slaughter ban.

Good to see you here again - cheering for Laminitis research. As we enter March I will be donating $29.00 on the 29th of March for Barbaro AND I will be donating $29.00 on the 29th of March for Pfacelli - our 9 month old filly who was born on May 29th the same year as Barbaro and was euthanized on March 29th of the following year - at 10 months- because of laminitis- same cause as Barbaro's. Wow - what if folks who could gave $58.00 on the 29th in honor of both.

You touch my heart each time you cheer people on. You go girl!

I don't post much at night but I enjoy your evening escapades.
Doesn't it almost feel sometimes like the breeders don't care where these horses end up. They breed for quantity hoping that a few out of many show a glimpse of promise. Certainly they are not breeding for slaughter like the cattle industry but they are also aware of the consequences of over breeding.
There are definite statistics that prove the number of "unwanted" horses is an inflated one. First...."unwanted" is a term coined by the pro-slaughter side. Of the thousands slaughtered each year, a significant portion of horses are stolen, sold to kill buyers under false pretenses, PMU mares and their foals....this list goes on. You add up the number and the total drop signigicantly.
My Cloud was among the unwanted by his previous owner but guess what he is very much wanted by me. So many of these horses don't even get a chance at a second life.

Is Shiraz and little Sailor still together?
The cam is going crazy, from one to another.

Carol Nichols

I think that camera is doing double duty between Shiraz and Sailor and another mare that is due very soon.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH LYNZ ... For Barbaro and for your baby filly!!! And yes, those of us who can donate $58 in honor of Barbaro and Pfacelli ... DO IT!! JUST DO IT!!

I think that what everyone is doing is so important and wonderful and dedicated and deserving ... We are all individual cogs in the Barbaro Wheel ... alone we are ineffective , but together we form a strong, driven, determined Wheel that will speed its way to Victory!!

ROLL ON, BARBARO NATION ... ROLL ON!!
