Barbaro Updates: 222

updates are now here.

Update 1555: I caught up briefly, by phone, with Peter Brette this afternoon. They were very happy with Chelokee, given his troubled trip and the fact the final time of the race was close to the Fountain of Youth time. Lets hope he can continue to move forward off this, but he did appear to come out of the race well. They also worked Round Pond this morning, she worked a half, and she worked very well. They are pointing for a race next weekend for Round Pond.

I picked up my dog (I was away for the weekend) from a friend who had an old Cheltenham tape in the VCR. They were watching Rathgorman getting well beaten by Badsworth Boy in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The year previously he (Kevin Whyte, now the local hunt's whip) had won on Rathgorman (not sure why we were not watching that tape). Anyway, it was fun to watch, Cheltenham will only be a couple of weeks away now.

I have neglected to mention an old time New York favourite won another stake this weekend, at the grand old age of nine: Old Favorite Evening Attire Posts Stymie Upset.

Update 1554: On the breeding front Borrego (and others) have their first mares in foal: First Mares in Foal to Artie Schiller, Bellamy Road, Borrego. I was a big fan of Borrego having been present at two of his less successful races (Smarty's Preakness and Saint Liam's Breeders' Cup Classic). Over the years I have had the pleasure of "hanging out" with Beau Greely, his trainer. Also of note: Bernardini and Henny Hughes will be doing double duty here and in Australia. Southern hemisphere breeding cycles are opposite to northern hemisphere breeding cycles which creates this opportunity.

Jack Ireland writes about the new Barbaro Stake: Barbaro Stakes a good fit for Delaware Park and notes it will be a turf stake.

Update 1553: Some great racing yesterday all around. Lava Man continued his California dominance with a powerful win in the Santa Anita Handicap. Great Hunter proved to be the best in the Robert Lewis Stakes, beating Sam P who fought hard the entire race. I am not sure how tough this Derby prep was, it included a maiden and a couple who had recently broke their maiden. The big Derby prep in the east was won by Scat Daddy, who got up impressively to beat Stormello and NoBiz. The three were within a half length of each other at the wire with Adore the Gold a close fourth. NoBiz ran erratically, and this is something that I assume needs to be sorted out if he is to showcase his talent effectively. I still believe he is the most talented 3yo we have seen thus far, but winning is the all important thing to do.

Michael Matz's Chelokee was impressive in a troubled trip in the allowance race at Gulfstream. Lets hope he can take a next step up after winning this condition. Steve Klesaris' Diabolical ran well for third in the Richter Scale (that was marred by the tragic breakdown of Bright One). He looked like the winner at the quarter pole but Pletcher's horse, Half Ours, produced more. Pletcher also won the Hutcheson (Edgar Prado aboard King of Roxy) which helped make this his best day as a trainer. Corinthian is looking like a good older handicap horse, he narrowly held off Hesanoldsalt.

HBO is planning a Barbaro documentary: HBO Sports Increases Its Reach, excerpt:

"We are going to try to explain why Barbaro became so significant and important to the American public. The entire country rallied around this horse," says HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg of the project, slated to debut the first week of June.

Update 1552: Another great day for galloping horses this morning at Fair Hill, and it was a busy morning with gate day and plenty of workers.

I ended up riding six this morning. The day started with Nautical Agent, she galloped a mile nice and easily. Tim was out on Gator Nation that set. I then rode Lucky, he also galloped an easy mile in behind Tim on Who's Happy. Then it was Hawty Creek. She was to breeze a half in company with Farouche (with Tim). She went very well, they ended up going a half in 49 and change. It was the first serious work for Hawty Creek for quite some time, but you would not have known it the way she went. Its a shame she could not run this weekend (her race did not go and I understand now Philadelphia Park still has us locked out for a few more days). Anyway it was a good work. I then rode three for Bobby, all of which did some kind of work. All went well. The first was working for the first time, a little quarter mile work and was very cool. All in all a great morning for exercise riding.

I caught up quickly with Mark Shuman who has Xchanger down at Oaklawn waiting for the Rebel Stakes. He was not disappointed with the way he ran in the Southwest, finishing fifth. He will open gallop tomorrow and work next weekend in preparation for the Rebel. I did not realize Graham Motion has two in the Battaglia this afternoon, with Rutledge Cat and Legacy Reserve. Its worth keeping an eye on both of them.

A great day of racing today, enjoy!

Update 1551: As we have noted throughout the week, today's races will be very interesting to observe. The two key cards are at Gulfstream and Santa Anita, with another Derby prep at Turfway.

At Gulfstream Park we have the Fountain of Youth headed by NoBiz Like ShoBiz, the beast from the east ... who is meeting Stormello, who won graded stakes on the west coast. Added to those two we have Scat Daddy, Adore the Gold and Drums of Thunder. This must be the best pre-Derby prep to date. Post time: 5:24 pm. On the undercard we have the Hutcheson, a slightly shorter race (7 1/2 furlongs as opposed to a mile and an eighth) which can turn up a Derby hopeful (post time: 3:54 pm) and a gangbuster allowance race (non winners of a race other than) which includes Chelokee and Sightseeing among others (post time: 2:56 pm). Other Stakes on the undercard include a Sprint race and Fair Hill's Diabolical, returning to the races after his close second to Thor's Echo last fall, and an older horse race which includes Corinthian who was a monster in his first start of the year. I am guessing this is the best card of racing this year thus far.

At Santa Anita Park we have the Santa Anita Handicap, headed by California's best, Lava Man and another Derby prep: the Robert B Lewis Stakes. Great Hunter heads this, Sam P needs to prove his class against stakes competition (he narrowly defeated Chelokee in an allowance at Churchill last year) and Saint Paul needs to run like he is working (his last race was much improved and he is a recent purchase of Baffert's team).

Finally, Turfway Park includes the John Battaglia, another Derby prep, on a synthetic surface. We will root for Rutledge Cat and Graham Motion!

There is racing elsewhere too, but these seem the marquee events / tracks.

Nice to see Dominguez quickly get back to winning ways: Contessa, Dominguez Bag 4 Winners at Aqueduct

Was wondering how our lady, Rosie, faired last nite...the cam is down...again. I hope she is resting well and that she has some company with her, other than chickens or a turkey! Good luck, Rosie-Posie.

Good Morning to all, enjoy your weekend, and Alex, the races today sound fab! I wonder if I will be able to see any on TV? Anyone know if they are to be broadcast? Thanks. Good day to all, and God bless.

***CANDLE ALERT***

Barbaro's candles are down to around 1,500.

There are only about 150 currently list for Lost in the Fog.

Pine Island is hanging in there around 300.

Let's light up the place!

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

It sounds as if this would be a good day to check out the local OTB parlor - lots of great races! I hope all have a safe trip and that our favorites are first at the wire!

Alex - Thank you for the advance notice on the new Breyer Barbaro edition - I missed out last time but not this time. It should arrive in time for my birthday in July.

##
Mary L. - Once again, thanks for the cam photos from MHR - for this MAC user it's the best I can do.

BTW - Late night gourmet chefs - How many Weight Watchers points are in a serving of troll soup? ;-)

##
Lynda P. - Congratulations on your degree. Valedictorian, to boot. Way to go!

Prayers to all in need - especially Sheila and her daughter Chloe.

HEY GUYS,

I have just completed my latest video...

It is entitled IF I HAD MY WAY...

It is dedicated to ending Horse Slaughter...

There is only one picture which may be upsetting
to some, but is in black and white and appears
for a short time in the beginning. The rest of
the video is uplifting...

As always, it is my gift of love to you...
in deep appreciation for all of your efforts...

Alex - Thanks for the updates! I'm headed over to Laurel this afternoon to watch the Horatius Stakes and then the simulcasting from Gulfstream! I started following Stormello last year right before the Breeder's Cup...so I'm really hoping he wins (although I'm a little worried that he had such a grueling trip out there). He's in very good company though! Should be an awesome race!

I hope Rosie is ok...cam is still down. Ugh!

I hope everyone has a great day and safe and happy weekend!

Good morning everyone. A gorgeous, glorious day to you all, safe races to all competitors, and Rosie, DO YOUR THING.

PUH-LEEZE!

###
Vonda, thanks for the candle alert. I light candles for Barbaro, Fog and Pine regularly but have been busy (meaning--I haven't been keeping up MY end of "the torch," so to speak).

###
Anyone notice the similarity in the star on NoBiz's face? Reminds me of a Very Special Horse that has brought us all together.

NoBiz: "The Beast From The East." LOVE it.

###
And again, safe racing to all today. I just cannot watch racing much anymore, but I might peak at Gulfstream today, 5:24 p.m. EST (assumption here--the time on my posts must be Greenwich Mean Time ;o).

Again, Alex and Tim, thank you for this site and for all you do for us.

*********Anti-slaughter Postcard*********

Hi all-

Edie and I have created an anti slaughter postcard as another method of correspondence with our senators and representatives.
It is eye catching, brief, should get through security quickly, and will be inexpensive to reproduce and mail.

See the ***Anti slaughter postcard*** thread
under Anti Slaughter Issues folder on the forum. If you can't access the forum, send an email to antislaughterlobby@earthlink.net for details on how to download...

We hope you find this useful.
Let's get this legislation passed for Barbaro!

Christian and Edie

P.S. Any feedback regarding getting postcards printed, cost of printing etc. plus any questions,
please email. Thanks!

Posted by: Christian at March 3, 2007 1:38 PM

Actually, I hope I DON'T PEAK at Gulfstream today. I'd like to think I'm still on the upward journey.

Will PEEK, though ;o)

## Pamela: Your video is a very powerful statement. I hope people who are yet unaware of what we do to our horses see this and spring into action.

Would also love to see Shake You Down, find a good home.

Thanks
Barb m in Florida and all

Debbie L.A. - Thanks for posting about Shake You Down on Flying Filly. Alot of callers have been calling At the Races about this horse, even hard-core bettors are upset about the humiliation this horse has endured. Going from winning Grade 1 races to low level claiming is terrible and I too hope he gets to retire with some dignity before it's too late.

Good news regarding Bend a Little - the filly who broke down at Gulfstream in the stakes race last Sun. - she was sent to Ocala and the injury is not as bad as they initially feared, she most likely will recover and be bred in the future.

Have a meeting/lunchon this morning, but will be back to see what we can do to help.

Those of us who were on Troll Patrol last not had our fill of Troll Soup. It's very low cal...in fact you can eat as much as you want. Very therapeutic.

Cathy Potter,

I was on when some of that was going on last night. You've got to laugh at those too stupid posts. LOL
Anyway, Ya'll handled yourselves very well! You guys are learning how to tame the trolls! They dry up and blow away when they don't get feedback.

MARG IN MAINE & CATHY POTTER...yes, troll soup is very low-cal, but it's totally EMPTY calories since there is absolutely no nourishment therein!
I was happy to contribute okra to the ingredient list...one way to get rid of the nasty stuff!

Happy Saturday FOB'S!

I was busy yesterday digging out from under 16 inches of snow here in Minneapolis!! Yikes! my achin' back! Need the full throttle dose of Ibuprofen today!

So I just got through reading the posts from yesterday... Mary L-- I about melted into a puddle when I read the "news" from Hope. If reading that made me cry, I cant even imagine Laurie H's reaction. She will be OVERJOYED and beside herself with happiness.

Also, regarding that "thing" that appeared again last night..you know the one that looks like the girl in the Exorcist? Well you guys had me busting a gut...Well done! I was mentioning to Laurie H last week when "little Regan" tried to attack her, The reaction from the FOB was to form a circle around her just like the game "RED ROVER, RED ROVER...Send TROLL-Y RIGHT OVER!"

Too cool!

OK Missy Rosie....Enough is enough now....Lets get down to business today OKAY??? I hope your camera gets fixed...I know its driving your mommy crazy all the time! You can do it. Saturday March 3rd has a nice ring to it dont you think?

Have great day everyone...Talk to you later!

Yes, we are united here and God help the people who try to infiltrate and destroy. Won't work.

Stay safe all. Lots of snow here as well but the roads in my area I think are finally drivable. That being said, I will drive up to see my little love muffin evacuee today. I'm sure he misses his Mom (probably the carrots more!).

REPOST

I have started a new thread in the discussion board under Barbaro about a possible Barbaro birthday party on 4/29 at Lone Star Park near Dallas, Tx for anyone in the area who cannot attend the one at Delaware Park. We'll have a Barbaro party southern division! (Sadly without Alex!)

I hope all horses racing today come home safe.

Marg, it's about 1 point per 1 cup serving, because it's very high fiber. It's best to remove the troll altogether after cooking. That's what garbage disposals are for. Or your local coyote pack.

Hello everyone. The Ceremony last night was short and sweet. No speeches at all. Just some recognitions and then our diploma folders. Mabe one day I will actually SEE my degree! Hahahahaha. The whole thing only lasted one hour, so not so bad.

Sorry to see the dorks last night. I read thru last nights posts. Thanks to everyone for their congrats. I have to say I am in the chat nearly every night and nothing KathyM said was true. we hold nothing but the topmost respect for everyone around Barbaro, and no one will EVER see any of us in there bashing anyone. The only ones who would do that are the trolls themselves.

Wendy, thanks for the wonderful pictures!!! It's really great to see a clear, close-up picture of beautiful Rosie and her pals...and Wilbur.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Rosie hasn't foaled yet...but I really thought last night would be the night. I swear her hindquarters were moving independently of the rest of her body for a while there. Then, at 12:45am, my CPU overheated and shut itself down, and I went to bed. Of course that made me even MORE certain she would foal during the night. LOL! But...it's morning, and there she is, butt to the camera, though that butt looks higher and rounder than ever for some reason. LOL! Soon, Rosie, soon!!!

Are we even sure she's pregnant???? I mean it could be a tummy full of hay... I keep going over to check her camera and no baby.

Is MHR sure she's overdue? She was a rescue and could have been field bred last spring. They wouldn't know for certain when her due date is then...

Just so everyone knows I was only kidding about asking if Rosie is even pregnant.

Next year, Macy's will have a Rosie balloon in the Thanksgiving Day Parade....

Posted by: jonna at March 3, 2007 4:05 PM

Here's my "doofus horse question" for the day: I'm watching Rosie, and right now, it looks like she's holding her right hind off the ground a little. Last night, sometimes it looked like she was holding her left hind up a little. And I noticed another mare I was watching on the cams doing something similar. Is this normal for a mare in late stages of pregnancy???

Of course, y'all know as soon as I saw this I'm thinking, "Oh, no! Uneven weight distribution!!! Get that foot down, NOW!!!" and thinking of laminitis. Oy...

Laurie, she's so big that she's just uncomfortable and has to switch her weight often. Fortunately she has 4 good legs to move the weight around on!!!

(((Laurie)))- I was thinking the same thing but I did not want to mention the dreaded "L" word. I am reassured by the thought that all pregnant mares must go through this same period of "shuffling" their weight around during the last stages of pregnancy.

Good Morning from Sunny CA (Sorry about that!) to my fellow FOB.

Susie-Welcome! Alex is more than an excercise rider. He also has an impressive education and teaches internet marketing at the College level. He has close connections to Barbaro's racing family including the Jackson's, Michael Matz and Peter Brette. He provides us with daily updates on his mornings at Fair Hill training center and also info on Horse racing and anti-slaughter issues. He is truly a Renaissance man. :):):)

Mike Matz had both CHELOKEE and CRUSADER RABBIT entered in the 5th race today at Gulfstream, he scratched CRUSADER RABBIT. Perhaps he didn't want the owners of CRUSADER RABBIT to run against CHELOKEE knowing he couldn't beat CHELOKEE...

I know who I'm betting now.....

It's in the upper 80's and VERY VERY humid at Gulfstream so watch your shoses in the post parades for being washed out...

Good Morning Barbaro Nation!

For everyone who was thinking they wanted a Breyer model of Barbaro - now's your chance. Take a second to email or drop Breyer a note and tell them how much we appreciate them donating $10.00 per model to the UPenn Laminitis Fund.

Safe trips to all horses today.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri in SE Texas at March 3, 2007 4:37 PM

Lynda..

MM has Surprizer Phew in the 1st at Gulfstream, his 1st start in America, was running in New Zealand, the horse has 11 starts with 6 wins. So he wins or doesn't run at all usually.

And in the 11th he has OMIT going on the turf for the first time.He may be the lone speed in the race going 1 1/16 mi. on the turf.

both horses seem to have a shot.

Good morning, family -
Hope all are well today, and that all runners have wings on their heels and come home safe.
## Susie Woodhead - Welcome! We're so glad you are here with us, and look forward to working with you for the good of horses everywhere.
## Skyler - Glad you are well, and hope you and your beasties are keeping your feet dry!
## Wendy - The pictures are magnificent. My husband particularly enjoyed the full feather seduction display by Wilbur with, - as someone earlier noted - Rosie's look of patient endurance as a backdrop. Thank you so much.
##Debbie L.A and cindy a. - I'm glad there were calls made with regard to Shake You Down. I emailed, as well. Did you send a note to Matt? I did, so I'm wondering if he is working behind the scenes...Let me know what's up. My email is jcntripod@yahoo.com, and I would welcome any information you ladies can give me. Sorry I was out of the loop last night - out for the anniversary dinner. Will go back and read last night now.
## - Laurie H. - We're thinking of you with much love. Get well, our friend-of-the-chenille-fuzzy-blanket-club!

Everyone - Have a splendid and safe day. If you haven't read "Saving Leslie Jones", order it and enjoy it when you are able. Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at work...(vis-a-vis our friend Shake You Down). It can be ordered on their website. Good stuff.
Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

##
Marilyn/CA - (raising my hand) I remember test patterns on TV. My father was always trying to adjust our black and white set so that was all I saw first thing in the morning!

Safe trips to all on the track today. I'll be pulling for Nobiz and Adore the Gold in the FOY and all of Michael's horses. (Sorry to see Crusader Rabbit was scratched - he won at 65-1 last time to break his maiden.) Thanks to whoever posted about the FOY being on ESPNNEWS.

I went on a trip to the Grand Canyon for about a week and thought for sure the baby would have arrived upon my return. When I saw she was still "with child" the saying "a watched pot never boils" came to mind. My Grandmother used to say this whenever someone was waiting for something to happen and that something was delayed. Sometimes these old sayings mean something.........

NOT UPDATED, POSTED VERBATIM FROM ORIGINAL

Hi Everyone, here is the latest - Barbaro's $3,000.00 Miracle stands at $2,900.00 received to date for the Laminitis Fund. Can we make it to $3,000.00 and get another two thousand from the anonymous donor I spoke about previously.

Anyone interested in making this miracle happen please send a check made out to me: Bea Gobee, 373 SAW CREEK ESTATES, BUSHKILL, PA 18324. The deadline is March 17th.
There is no designated contribution amount, any amount will be accepted. In memo section please write "$3000.00 Miracle."

Thanks to everyone who participated to date. Recipes are being mailed out, please be patient with me - 42 sets have been mailed out to date.

FYI-Monday & Tuesday next week I will be totally out of pocket due to work related obligations. Will not have access to e mail for two days. Hate to see what work and home e mail will look like upon my return.

Hopefully there will be at least $100.00 in my mail box to put us over the top for the $3,000.00. Again, thank you all.

There is a wonderful, beautiful STAR IN THE SKY, who carriest the name BARBARO that is FOREVER, shining down on us and will NEVER, EVER go away. We treasure that star. Grandma Bea, Ladee Elizabeth & Remington Barbaro Gobee.

I hope all is well with everyone today? I certainly felt that Rosie was gonna foal last night for sure. I had predicted before sunrise, well I was wrong...unless ya'll are holding back on me? Ya'll know I can't see that danged ole marecam...

WENDY---I love your pic of Rosie and Wibur on the forum. I left you a catption. I was laughing so hard I was snorting, I could hear it in my head as I was writing it! Go look! It may not be as funny as I think. You may be too young to get it, do you know Gi-Gi (movie-song "Thank Heaven For Little Girls"?) THAT older frenchman was Maurice Chevalier.

How come I cannot see your slideshow on flikr? My puter says it is done but no pix. It amazes me, if I wanted to look at something gross like nekkid pix(LOL)-I could. But when I want to see some non-nekkid nature pix, I cannot get on! Whats the deal? My puter says "You have performed an illegal action and it will be shutdown" Who are you Mr. Compuserve to dictate Rosie and Wilbur to be illegal? HA!! DAng it!

I posted this a few nights ago. Not sure if you saw it:
(from article)
Trainer Barclay Tagg said Showing Up, the multiple Grade 1-winning turf horse, will likely begin breezing next week as he embarks on his 4-year-old campaign.

Tagg said the first two objectives for Showing Up this year are the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on Derby Day (May 5) and the Manhattan at Belmont Park on Belmont Stakes Day (June 9).

I did okay until I got to thr epilogue in the last chapter 'Time To Say Goodbye' then I kind of went to pieces. I also bought the book "Barbaro...A Nations love
Story" ... but I haven't had the nerve to read it yet. I am a single working mother who is trying to raise a mouthly 16 year old son whose father
wants nothing to do with him. Anyway, I am in tears most days as it is...I am afraid that this book will take me over the edge. I do have a 10 yr old daughter who, at least for now, is a joy.

I also have a 9 month old golden retreiver, who
is a joy and a pain in the neck at the same time.
I could re write the book "Marley and Me" to "Ella
and Me".

Barbaro was like a beacon...he kept me focused.
Now that he is gone I am at a loss.

Dora, I love your caption. Very funny. I knew the FOB's could come up with some good phrases!

Posted by: Wendy at March 3, 2007 8:21 PM

Good afternoon Alex and FOBs!

Just saw a short clip about Barbaro on MSNBC regarding Delaware Park renaming the "Leonard Richards Stakes" to "The Barbaro Stakes." Boy, it was great to see our boy on television again, but also really hard. The clip showed him both pre and-post injury and at the NBC with Dr. Richardson. It was almost like the "old days" when seeing clips of Barbaro on TV was a common occurrence. I miss him...we all miss him.

Yes, the troll reared its ugly head yesterday, but we handled it very well...well done FOBs.

I read on the Mare Stare message board that some of the farms are pulling their public cameras due to people calling and emailing the owners with harassing-type messages. I sincerely hope this doesn't become a widespread occurrence. It's not only a wonderful experience for us, it's very much a helpful tool for the owners who need (sometimes depend) on as many eyes as they can get watching over their mares to make sure everything is going well. Very sad it has come to this for some of the owners.

Time for my "I know next-to-nothin bout horses" question of the day. What does it mean when a foal is "imprinted?" Does it have something to do with getting a foal used to human interaction?

###
Laurie H.-Hope you are feeling better and stronger each day. We're all keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Get well soon sweetie.

Dora J. Crow-Not sure if you saw my post late last night, so again I want to thank you for your "A Welcome Home for You" post. You're such a sweetie, and I appreciate your words.

Lynda P.-Congratulations on your graduation and being named valedictorian...well done!

Welcome to Susan Woodhead and all newcomers.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Please always remember in your comings and goings to be safe out there.

Barbaro, I sure do miss you sweet boy, but you're always in my heart...always.

"Barbaro has had the largest impact for research by any animal of any species. That is his legacy."

The miracle of Barbaro continues...

Posted by: Sandie at March 3, 2007 8:27 PM

Barbaro, still supreme in our hearts. What a truly magnificent horse he was and how incredibly he fought to survive. He was a super horse and I ache for his loss, for what he could not have-a long and healthy future. His owners are a credit to horseracing and Dr. Richardson, with his staff, made a valiant effort to give Barbaro every chance to recover. There are still tears, mixed with gratitude that Barbaro is not suffering. Barbaro, always remembered and loved.

For ANYONE who wants to see the races today without racing TV channels or subscriptions to replays ---

You can go to CALRACING.COM, register for free video replays, and once you are registered, you are given a choice of DATE, TRACK, or HORSE. Gulfstream is not one of their tracks, but if you know the name of a horse in a particular race at Gulfstream or elsewhere, you can input that name, and you are given the choice of all their races to watch! It is quite wonderful to have that facility... there may be other places to watch replays for free, but CalRacing.Com is the easiest I know. The races are up and available about 20 minutes after each race, sometimes earlier.

Just saw a weird race at Santa Anita...lot of bumping out of the gate and Mobo lost his jockey, Julian Leparoux - he's ok! And Mobo went right with the pack and placed in the race...does this count if you're in the money without a jockey???

Lynda P - Did you register for free race replays? When it takes you to the screen for DATE, TRACK, or HORSE, go to HORSE and type in Chelokee... The first race listed is his last, shown as GP (Gulfstream Park), Race 5 or 6, whichever it was...

Posted by: Smitty at March 3, 2007 9:30 PM

Leslie in MN,

Yes, I did see that workout for SMOKEY STOVER... Stover... bullet! And third in that workout was VICTORINA, his four year old stablemate. So glad to see the females on the same scale!

I haven't seen anything on VICARINO or QUITE A RUSH for months now. I hope their recoveries are coming alone without incident. Sure miss seeing them, but they were young. VICARINO was suggested as an outsider for the Derby, but he never ran long before he came up with an "ouchy" in January. So I guess we'll be looking for SMOKEY before long, somewhere...

Posted by: Shelley in CA at March 3, 2007 9:35 PM

DANG they must have just started to show Gulfstream!!!! thanks Shelley CA for telling me!! That was a really wierd race. Chelokee would have to be really good to do what he just did!

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri in SE Texas at March 3, 2007 9:36 PM

I just watched the replay of Chelokee's race on Calracing.com (thank you for that, Shelley!) and all I can say is OH MY GOD...what a spectacular race! Chelokee showed HUGE heart to come back and win...Michael must be THRILLED!!!

Posted by: Sandie at March 3, 2007 9:43 PM

Your're right, CHELOKEE was very impressive... When I was watching the race, I kept wondering where CRUSADER RABBIT was. He must have been scratched today, because he was still in all the entry lists earlier today. Hope he's ok, or maybe Michael wanted to concentrate on just one horse! I always wondered how hard that is to have two horses with two different owners running, but then Pletcher runs two and three in a race together all the time. Increases his odds of winning, I guess...

Posted by: Shelley in CA at March 3, 2007 9:44 PM

For those who use CalRacing.Com, the other nice thing about their replays is that you can watch them in full screen if you choose, and you can also watch the "head on" replay. The resolution isn't as good full screen as the small picture, of course, but it's still better than nothing!

Posted by: Shelley in CA at March 3, 2007 9:47 PM

Yea Crusader was scratched sometime this morning. Dont know why

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri in SE Texas at March 3, 2007 9:47 PM

Re Santa Anita third race...

I always love those horses who run without their jockeys and even do very well! What heart they have, and perhaps it is a sign of good training, but to me it is just very touching. I know the problems they may cause because other horses may be held up or not be given a fair running, but when the riderless horse comes second, and is gaining on the horse leading, what can you say but that he is a really good runner...

HBO Sports Increases Its Reach
By Ben Grossman

HBO Sports hopes to parlay a soon-to-be-announced documentary on ill-fated champion horse Barbaro, a new boxing series in Sunday primetime and a possible deal with uber-producer Mark Burnett into increased stature—both within and outside the company.

The network will soon announce that it is in production on a Barbaro documentary, chronicling the courageous Kentucky Derby winner whose horrific injuries sustained in last May's Preakness Stakes race led ultimately to his being put down in January.

Barbaro's battle to survive became front-page news, garnering so much attention that it created a backlash, as people wondered why the country grew obsessed with a horse.

“We are going to try to explain why Barbaro became so significant and important to the American public. The entire country rallied around this horse,” says HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg of the project, slated to debut the first week of June

Posted by: MJ at March 3, 2007 10:58 PM

OH MY! If only there was a way to contact Ross Greenburg, HBO Sports president, and relate the anti-slaughter facet of BARBARO's legacy.

Plese Lord...help us to to this! Might anyone know how?

Posted by: Otherlyn at March 3, 2007 11:02 PM

Somewhere in the blogs on the Hennigan Bros. site they talk about HBO contacting them because they have so much footage on Barbaro. I bet they got this break. I am so excited!!

Otherlyn-Yep...everything you said is true. If it weren't for Edgar, I absolutely believe we would not have been given the gift of 8 months and 9 days with our beloved Barbaro. He is a hero, although he would never claim to be...he's such a humble man.

Posted by: Sandie at March 3, 2007 11:03 PM

........maybe it can happen through the Jacksons. They surely will be consulted. Might we be able to get the suggestion to Mrs Jackson, not to miss this wonderful HBO opportunity?

Posted by: Otherlyn at March 3, 2007 11:04 PM

The entire arcitle has a link on the forum. Otherwise I am willing to bet alot of money that the Hennigan Bros. are somehow involved.

HBO may not want to take the anti-slaughter approach because this is for HBO sports, but...if they talk about the FOB's and carrying on his legacy, that may be a way to at least get it mentioned. The "no horse left behind" story that Barbaro inspired.

Posted by: MJ at March 3, 2007 11:06 PM

More interesting news!!!! The Delpark Barbaro stakes is on turf!!

Barbaro Stakes a good fit for Delaware Park
Posted Saturday, March 3, 2007

Congratulations are in order for Delaware Park and chief operating officer Bill Fasy, who on Thursday announced the renaming of one of the track's major stake races -- the Grade III Leonard Richards -- after the late Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro.

Yes, the Maryland Jockey Club earlier this year named a stake after Barbaro that will be run on Preakness weekend. Several other tracks are likely to follow, but creating the Barbaro Stakes was a wise move by Fasy and racing secretary Izzy Trejo for several reasons.

First of all, Barbaro broke his maiden at DelPark in 2005. Another thing is that Michael Matz, who conditioned the "Big Fella," began his training career at DelPark.

It's also interesting to note that this stake for 3-year-olds will be run on the turf. Barbaro's first race at DelPark was on the grass. Until Matz put him on the Triple Crown trail, he was considered a standout turf horse.

Will he be the only horse with a race named for him on dirt and one on turf???

Posted by: MJ at March 3, 2007 11:10 PM

##

I'll contact Rachel. Otherlyn.

Posted by: Marky at March 3, 2007 11:12 PM

BARBARO never had a chance to breed, his legacy has far greater scope than mere bloodlines. He is the father of all of the saved horses. Whether they have been saved by the advances in equine medicine, brought about by his injury and treatment, new funding for curing laminitis, safer racetracks, racehorse retirement, anti-horse-slaghter...EVERY horse saved because of BARBARO connected efforts in those fields IS a Son or Daughter of BARBARO.

No blood line...just Life or Death. BARBARO's line LIVES and goes on because of HIM.

Hello all!

I just did watch the total lunar eclipse, and it was wonderful, Tenerife showed us its best clear night to night and when the moon looked like a orange ball, with all the bright stars around it. It was so amazing knowing that somewhere behind all this Barbaro is running free with the wind together with my own Eclipse on that rainbow bridge, I hope you all will be able to see the lunar eclipse just as wonderful as I did.

Hope Rosie gets her baby tonight, that would have been wonderful.

How is baby Sailor doing?? Hopefully well.

Best wishes to all of you and have a happy sunday all of you.

Scat Daddy by a nose in Fountain of Youth
SARAH LARIMER
Associated Press

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Scat Daddy closed with a rush and nosed out Stormello at the finish to win the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfsream Park on Saturday.

With the photo-finish victory, Scat Daddy gives trainer Todd Pletcher a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby. Earlier, Pletcher's King of the Roxy won the Hutcheson Stakes, another Derby prep race, and the trainer finished with five winners on the day.

Nobiz Like Shobiz, the 2-1 favorite considered the top Derby contender, finished third in the nine-horse field.

Ridden by John Velazquez, Scat Daddy won in 1:49.11 and paid $13.80, $6.20 and $2.80. Stormello, who was sent cross-country to take on the best in the East, paid $6.20 and $3. Nobiz Like Shobiz, trained by Barclay Tagg, paid $2.10 to show.

Adore the Gold, who took a brief lead from pace-setter Stormello at the top of the stretch, finished fourth.

jonna,

I can't imagine why you're not getting anything... did you spell CHELOKEE right? Sometimes it's some silly thing like that. Does it work for other names? If not, then you're not at the right place.

I just watched the FOY there, so I know it's still working.

Now the races are over, the dogs are in luck. We still have bright sun (ha! no lunar eclipse here!) and I promised them a good long walk so I have to leave in a few minutes. Otherwise I will have revolting dogs (uh, dogs revolting...).

Hope it works for you! If not, try reregistering - but if you can get any of the replays, can go to the different tracks and dates, then the HORSE name should work.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at March 3, 2007 11:46 PM

It looked to me like No Biz was distracted coming down the strech. His eyes seems to be looking towards his right at the viewing stands.

Evidently a horse name "Bright One" broke down in one of the earlier races and had to be euthanized.:(:(:(

I hope the HBO documentary does justice to Barbaro's life and legacy. It does worry me...

I've had my head in the sand lately except for calling re the legislation and trying to place some dogs and on top of all that 6 gigs in a row (Weds through next Monday) and it is like jetlag with these hours for a 65-year old rock&roller!

re placing dogs - please go to the Forum/ Discussion Board - under category General, thread "Sasha (chow mix) needs foster home."

Amazing coincidence at Forum earlier - I posted info re 2 labs needing forever home - I'd rec'd the info from a friend in Indiana - and got a response from an FOB who'd rec'd the SAME info from a trainer at Santa Anita, and she reported that she heard the doggies were already placed! Wow!

PS - Passing out a 2-sided antislaughter page at the venues where I play in Illinois, with info both about the Illinois law pending and who to call, and about the federal bills and who to call. Thank you to everyone who posted the Calracing.com info. I watched Chelokee (very impressed) and the FOY. I have never seen No Biz run, does he always run down the strech like that? Seemed like he didn't know where to go vs. the other horses who had there heads down and were running straight?

I have to say I was very impressed with Stormello. He just got caught in the end otherwise he had that race in control from the start.

I too watched all of Barbaro's races. Every announcer was impressed with that horse. No one is like him!!

Just sent this off to the Hennegan brothers...

**************************************************

Dear John and Brad-

I saw your lovely Barbaro outtakes from First Saturday in May on Alex and Tim's site. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing your movie, although it may have to be on dvd. (Nearest real theater 3 hours away...)

Just heard about the HBO documentary on Barbaro,
and was wondering (hoping) that you guys are involved.

In the event that you are, I have a request :

Please if at all possible, use this fantastic opportunity to highlight the anti horse slaughter activism that has been crystallizing through the TWR site. It is Barbaro's legacy (along with increasing funding for laminitis research and track safety) and such a fitting way to honor him.

Those of us who have been inspired by Barbaro
to support this legislation can only dream of the results national exposure would bring.

Thanks for listening and best wishes for First Saturday in May and any future projects-

CJ - I am still amazed as well that the Labs that needed a forever home here in California reached a FOB across the country. HOW WONDERFUL IS THAT.

THE HOUSE THAT BARBARO BUILT

I know I am so selfish but I just miss him so and want him back. There are times that it hits me that he is truly gone and I get a sharp pain in my heart.

Hello Family,
I’ve been away for a few days. Had some medical issues going on, glad to report the doc gave me the all clear on the serious problems. THANK GOD!
I just wanted to say thank you to all of you who were praying and wishing me well. It would not have happened w/o you.
I especially want to say thank you to Harriette. You have been a Godsend.
So many of you talked about your “sign” from Big B. I finally got my sign.
Thursday, I was in bed from pain. My 10yr old daughter brought me home a book to read she got from the school library. The name of the book is Five True Horse Stories by, Margaret Davidson. A short book but a great read. I could not believe how some of the stories related to my life since being here.
I wanted to share one of the stories from the book. If you don’t mind.

The story of Justin Morgan, the biggest little horse of all:
Justin Morgan walked along a dirt road in Massachusetts. He was too poor to own a horse. This was two hundred years ago, so he had to walk wherever he wanted to go. Justin had come all the way from Vermont to collect some money a man owed him.
But when he got there the man said, “If you want money you’ll just have to wait. I can give you something else though.” He pointed to two horses in a field nearby.
Justin was a teacher. He didn’t need a horse. And the man owed him much more money than Justin would get from selling two horses. But he had come a long way. Two horses were better than nothing. Finally Justin nodded and started home with the horses.
One horse was big and powerful looking. Justin could sell him. But he shook his head when he looked at the other horse. A colt named Figure. Figure was only about fourteen hands high. That wasn’t very big for a horse.” He’s probably worth nothing at all,” Justin thought.
Figure had run wild for two years. His coat was covered with mud and dust. Justin could hardly tell what color he was. So when he reached home, Justin Morgan washed the little horse. He picked all the burrs out of his mane and tail. Then he brushed and combed him all over until the horse’s coat gleamed in the sun. ”Why, he’s handsome!” Justin’s daughter cried.
It was true. The horses legs and ears were shiny black. The rest of his coat was a nice reddish-brown. His main and tail were thick and long. His back was straight and his muscles firm and strong.
Figure had never been trained. But he learned quickly. Soon he was pulling carriages and wagons. He was so gentle that the youngest child could ride him. And he was smart. “Sometimes I think that horse knows what I’m thinking be
