Barbaro Updates: 223

updates are now here.

Update 1560: A quick update on Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet who is currently at New Bolton Center: Real Quiet Mending, excerpt:

"He's doing well, and looks good and bright-eyed," said syndicate manager Mike Jester March 5. "Dr. (Dean) Richardson is treating his right hind foot with antibiotics to guard against infection. He might be going home soon."

Update 1559: Excellent article from Sandra McKee, Baltimore Sun: Surgeon works on life after Barbaro, which includes the following excerpts:

"I wasn't going to go," said Deborah Cronin, an equine and small animal vet from Califon, N.J. "There are a lot of feelings on my part about Barbaro, and I wasn't sure I wanted to relive them. But my friends talked me into it, and I'm glad they did. It was a very heartfelt and warm speech. He spoke very well about the events leading up to the end. ... He cleared up a lot concerning why the end came so fast."

and

"Things aren't pre-Barbaro normal," he said. "There still are follow-up stories, and I've had at least 1,000 letters since he died. For a long time, they were coming at a rate of about 100 a day, every day, and those are the ones just addressed to me.

"If they're addressed to me, I read them. It's good. It's bad. Some are straightforward, but some are so eloquent and heartfelt, they reopen wounds."

Update 1558: The Barbaro Stakes, to be run at Delaware Park in July, will be a grade 3 event on the dirt, not Turf as was noted ealier.

Update 1557: This morning it felt cold at Fair Hill. Temperatures appeared around freezing, but the wind was pretty unpleasant all morning.

After a day off yesterday I rode seven today. Hawty Creek was first, and I just jogged her around the shedrow for ten minutes. I did not want to do too much with her as we are basically in a holding pattern waiting for a race which won't happen for at least a couple of weeks. In my absense yesterday her mane was pulled (shortened) and she certainly needed it. It is quite short now though!

After Hawty I rode two for Tim. Lucky followed Tim on Nautical Agent, we galloped a mile and a quarter on the Tapeta track. They both went nicely. Lucky is doing all things well for a baby (2yo). I then rode Grandma, who I had not ridden for a while. She also galloped a mile and a quarter, leading Tim on Quick Quest. Both galloped nicely. The four more I rode also all went to the track and all galloped about a mile and a quarter. A nice uneventful morning aside from my last horse who put in a massive buck near the beginning of the gallop just as someone was overtaking us along the rail. Fortunately she managed to catch me too after sending me into near orbit! I did observe a couple of riders this morning either getting run away with or close to it. I would attribute that to a combination of monday morning (horses are usually a little more energized after a day off) and the wind.

Update 1556: Fans of Barbaro were busy this weekend with horse rescue and were able to help save multiple horses (see NOW HELP tropical blossom for example). In this spirit make sure to continue to make your calls.

The Horse of the Delaware Valley (you need to be a subscriber) includes a cover story: "The Torch is Passed". Its cover includes a picture of Man in Havana (and Emily).

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I see you all were busy saving horses yesterday while I was out enjoying the snow here in Maine. I am, unfortunately, one of those with a larger heart than wallet, so my heartfelt thanks to those of you who continue to give so generously. I give of my time and for now, that is what I can afford.

I was so hoping that Aunt Henny could give Michael a second win this weekend. I hope she came out of the race in good shape.

Prayers to all in need. Hope you're feeling better, Laurie!

Good morning, FOBS! Thanks, Alex for keeping us informed.

PLEASE CALL AND FAX YOUR SENATORS AND REPS TODAY. Please also follow the new strategy Debra and Shelley (and everyone else who crossposts for that matter) will be posting.

United we stand. Let's do this for the horses, in loving memory of our Barbaro.

Any news on Fitch?

In the words of Mary S.,

Fitch is protected
Out from the front, out from the rear,
out from the right side and out from the left. Protected from above and protected below.
Fitch is surrounded by the veil of protection that is God's own pure love.

The Light of God surrounds him
The Love of God enfolds him
The Power of God Protects him
The Presence of God watches over him
Wherever you are Fitch, God IS.

Love, Light and Protection for Fitch.

Good morning all FOB's!

This is for all FOB's who cannot go to Delaware Park on 4/29 for Barbaro birthday party. I have started a thread on the discussion board under Barbaro for all who live close to Lone Star Park near Dallas. Please reply to my message if you would like to meet there to celebrate Barbaro's birthday. It's the southwestern division of Delaware's party.

Miss you angel Barbaro. Run with the wind.

Morning Barbaro. It has not got any easier. Seem to miss you more as time goes on. Thanks Alex

Hiya, FsOB! Brrr, is it ever cold here on the banks of the Thames this AM. The wind was howling so much early this AM that it sounded like a "hoot owl". Tomorrow & Weds. AM are supposed to be even worse. Argh!

To Patty in Dallas, CJ, and any interested FsOB in TX: Please see my posting from 03/05 at 1:55 AM. It is one the page that starts with Alex's Update # 1555. I am willing to write a nomination to the Kennedy Presidential Library's Profiles in Courage Awards program on behalf of the work of Mayor Paula Bacon in Kaufman, TX. But I would be very grateful if any of you have links to any newspaper articles that document her work trying to get the Beltex slaughterhouse closed in Kaufman.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and productive day. May we all strive to "Be like Barbaro!". RMH

The horse is a holy creature

sent to this earth to remind us of the Divine

He is uniquely connected to us.

He is our benevolent companion

and our guide

to the beingness we have forgotten.

His four strong legs carry us when we are weak

from the burdens of life.

His beauty inspires us

when our eyes are weary from crying.

His spirit uplifts us when our hearts lie dormant

Let us not forget.

Let us not abandon him

or any of his kind.

Let us not relegate him to a beast of burden

but acknowledge his unselfish gifts.

Let us always care for him as long as his legs touch the earth

and beyond.

He is our reminder of what grace is

He is our return to grace

Only by awakening to the true awareness of the horse

can we ever expect to understand him.

He speaks to us in the language of the heart, not the mind.

His true self is only given to those who seek to comprehend

Only those who ask

rather than demand

will receive his undying loyalty and generosity of spirit.

Awaken

to the message of the horse . . .

Harriette- Well done as usual.

Anyone have any news on Fitch? What is wrong with mankind that someone could do this to to an animal? I am so angry right now. I cannot come up with words to express how I feel. Size me up for the orange jumpsuit gang also.

###Cal, I'm with you. When I read of things like Fitch, the blood of my warrior grandfathers pounds in my veins.

To all who abuse animals I say there is no good room in hell. Think about that.

GOOD MORNING FOB’S

We are now joining with Habitat for Horses and following their strategy until we receive directions from DC. It is our understanding that, at this time, the most effective way to move this legislation is to target the committee where we have the MOST support. If we can get it out of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, we have the highest chance of getting HR503 to a vote. We already know that the Agricultural Committee is NOT a friend to our cause so we must continue to push the people that WILL help us. If we can get it passed in the House, we have a much better chance of moving forward in the Senate.

As before, we will be posting a new list of names each day. It was proven to be very effective last week and our efforts are to be applauded. The list will be provided to us from Habitat for Horses each day. This little “tweek” in strategy may just be the ticket to success.

Following is the list that has been targeted for calls on MONDAY, MARCH 5.

We will let no one tear down the House that Barbaro Built...and we will do our best to be steadfast on your mom's (Mrs. Jackson) request...and get the anti-horse slaughter bill passed SWIFTLY..

Run, sweetness, run...

Good Morning Fans/Family of Barbaro..

Looks like you were very busy, and alot of wonderful things have happened...saving one, horse or several horses should make everyone's heart swell with pride and joy. Thank you.

Please fax, call, email...let us get the ball rolling..we have so much to get accomplished...and we are speaking for the ones that cannot speak for themselves.

Every footprint there is a hoof print...Let us show mankind that there is compassion and love...

Remember the Fallen Angels, the ones suffering in bad weather, the spoken and unspoken requests, all of the rescues, and as Barbaro says, love one another...we are family.

I thank Alex and Tim always...their kindness will never be forgotten...

Please be with the ones who has lost a loved one or a loved pet...and remember all the animals that are suffering...

Have a wonderful day.

Good morning, all!

I'm sorry I missed you all this weekend--had to work--but I'm afraid to ask what happened with Fitch? And in one short weekend you guys saved another group of horses? You are just amazing.

So happy to see Evening Attire win again. We need horses that stay around, healthy and competitive even if it's been awhile between wins.

Will make my calls and light my lilac candle at 10:30 this morning in loving memory...

Posted by: Jane in CT at March 5, 2007 2:10 PM

Hi Shelley in CA.,

Well it has been awhile. Glad to know you aint mad at me for whatever the reason could be!

Thanks for the Congrats on Jim's continuing wins. He doesn't win them all but by golly he sure does try to every time outta the gate!!

He raced yesterday at Blue Ribbon Downs in Ok., and today he races at Harrah's Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, LA. and then back to Manor Downs in Austin, TX. We've been doing quite a bit of travelin' lately! I don'think any of these tracks do live broadcasting for us internet users! If I learn differently I'll sure let ya know!

All puppies are doing good. My dogs were kinda whiney in Austin last week with the heavy duty winds we had there. They had us red tagged for Tornado's, but thankfully we didn't get any. The big puppy "Riches Bad Boy" is turned out and lovin' every minute of his retirement!! I'm looking for another horse to use for ponying work. But can't spend much money since I don't have any. Missed a great deal last week from a trainer that was getting outta the biz. Sold his 12 year old pony horse for $300.00 and he's sound too! Oh well will keep on lookin' for the good deal.

I've not been keeping up with the board too much either over here as I've been so busy with the NERC web site and the work therein.

Know what you mean about life getting in the way and the not enough sleep stuff. Such is the way of us workin' class folks! Beats the beejeebies outta the alternative.

Hope your dogs are over their trauma and back to normal. Kids like that grow up to be that and a whole lot worse sometimes. Hope these particular Juvenile Delinquents get theirs sooner rather than later!

I always keep the Faith and the Hope right at the forefront of everything!!

Smile, it'll give your face something to do!

Hello, Everyone,

I want to call your attention to a New York Times op-ed piece this morning called: We Eat Horses, Don't We? Sorry I can't seem to print out the link, but it's in NYTimes.com/opinion. Intersting, if heartbreaking, article about horse and animal slaughter in this country. I'm vegetarian, myself, mostly because of the horrific way farm animals are treated all their lives in this country.

Best to all of you and great FOBs.

To learn about Fitch, a 7 month old colt who was horribly injured when he resisted the thieves who were trying to steal him from a rescue facility and was therefore DRAGGED down a concrete driveway...on the Forum under the heading "Horse Rescue" there is a thread titled "Young Colt (Fitch) needs your help"
In the first message there is a link to the rescue with graphic pictures of the incident...NOT for the faint of heart. There are also candles lit for Fitch on gratefulness.org

Yes, sign me up for the "orange suit brigade". I mostly lurk, but after reading about what those "humans" did to that little horse, I'm insensed. IMHO, these excuses for warm-blooded animals should be dragged down a long concrete driveway tied to the back of a horse. Oh, does that hurt? You have road rash? Too bad. Here, lets pour some salt in your wounds, you SOB's.

Lock me up. I'm sorry, there's no excuse for such "human" debris.

I pray for poor little Fitch, and all who are in pain.

UPDATE ON FITCH (copied from the Forum)

We did not get a call through the night which means Fitch did not take a turn for the worse. He is still down. he seems to be having trouble getting up when he attempts it. He does seem to be in pain. This was at 8 am and the doctor was not in yet , he had been checking on him throughout the night.

Tracy is on her way to the hospital now to be with Fitch and we will keep everyone posted. AS soon as we have an updated reoprt from the doctor we will let everyone know.

Please keep Fitch in your prayers...this is a crucial time for Fitch.

Rachel: Here's the link to the NYT Op-Ed article. (I hope it works.) I agree, it's an "interesting, if heartbreaking" look at pieces of American history that some of us may not have been aware of previously.

We Eat Horses, Don't We?

Exerpt: "There are solid reasons to object to horse slaughter. But to imply that it is somehow un-American doesn’t go the distance. Americans have eaten it, even enjoyed it, though never so much to keep it coming in times of plenty, except at Harvard. Horsemeat has been a traditional hardship food. Those seeking to ban it in Congress would serve best by ensuring that we never miss it."

I suppose we could tie our campaign to ending world hunger, but that seems like over-reaching to me (especially since the current situation has nothing to do with European or Japanese hunger.) At any rate, it's good to be armed with facts, however negative they may be.

Alex, thank you for the racing updates. If it weren't for you I wouldn't know squat. The papers here do not seem to deem racing important enough to write about much less give an update unless it's derby week.GRRRR... so at least you save the day, thanks again. Sounds like it was a good challenging race, I hope all the horses come out safe and sound.

##Please sign me up for the "Orange Brigade". It just breaks my heart how some people can even think of treating animals cruelly much less acting upon those urges. SICK SICK SICK.

Good morning, all

I'm a sad girl today. As hard as I try (and as easy as it usually is) to be happy, positive and uplifting, sometimes things just weigh my heart down. Today is one of those days: Fitch, the horses who broke down racing over the weekend, the Bluffton College baseball team, concerns about hubby's health and what he may not be telling me...I'm over my grief limit today.

Saturday night, hubby went to the video store and came back with a horse movie to watch with me - "Dreamer". We enjoyed it, and I thought it was incredibly thoughtful of him to specifically look for a horse movie.

APN for Rosie, I guess...it would be so wonderful and uplifting for all of us to welcome her new foal soon...not to mention a huge relief for her and the folks at MHR.

I intend to spend much of today in prayer and meditation...and rest assured all of you and the things we are fighting for will be there.

Posted by: Laurie at March 5, 2007 2:57 PM

RANDEE; I don't think there is any truth to that at all. The reason why he hasn't ran is because he is a very immature horse. It has taken him quite a while to learn to run, and he still isn't all that fast. He seems to like to run 5 furlongs in 1:03. That's not going to win you anything. I just had a workout for him about a week ago.

When I think of the love offered Barbaro in his time of need, the only humane thing is for Fitch to have been treated the same way.

Unfortunately there are some sickos out there, so I felt compelled to do what little I could to help Fitch in his recovery.

I hope the next posting from Jennifer will bring good news about Fitch's condition.....irregardless I think it would be great if us FOBs could reach into our pockets and help Fitch. Or at the very least, let's light a candle for Fitch, as we have done for Our Boy, Sweet Barbaro!!

I am so incensed regarding the cruelty which was inflicted upon little Fitch. I researched the South Carolina Code of Laws and discovered the following information:

SECTION 47-1-40. Ill-treatment of animals generally.

(B) Whoever tortures, torments, needlessly mutilates, cruelly kills, or inflicts excessive or repeated unnecessary pain or suffering upon any animal or by omission or commission causes the acts to be done for any of the offenses is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be punished by imprisonment of not less than one hundred eighty days and not to exceed five years and by a fine of five thousand dollars.

Let's pray that these monsters are caught!

Good morning FOB's...wishing you a wonderful day. I am in awe of everything that is accomplished but this group. So much love and dedication to our animal friends. I feel as if I am home.

I have a small request: This Saturday, I have my first volunteer day with a horse rescue group in Leesburg, VA. Although I love horses, I am not an expert in their care. I am lookng for basic tips on what to do/what not to do when approaching horses, especially those who may have been abused or neglected. I'm sure I'll get some basic instruction when I arrive at the rescue, but prefer to do some homework before hand. I'm going to start a thread on the discussion board and welcome all comments and advice.

Peace and love to all...

With a new day comes clarity. The best we can do for that boy is to stop HS. Without this "industry" horse theft would decrease dramatically.

Please pray and donate but even more importantly make a call or send and email. See Shelley's post above--timestamp 1.15 pm--and help prevent this cruelty in the future.

REPOST

HOUSE COMMITTEE ON ENERGY & COMMERCE (FOR HR 503)

Representative Rick Boucher
Phone #: 202-225-3861
Fax #: 202-225-0442

Good Monday morning. Snow flurries and very cold here--if no accumulation, fine with me. It is March, after all.
I want to ask the more knowledgeable, "horsey people" FOBs about an organization that sent me a request for donation, and statements to sign and send to my senators. No problem with the signature part; don't know how they got my name (maybe New Bolton??), and don't know anything about them.
It took me three days to open the envelope because I feared a very sad photo--and I was right. The website is also very sad, so don't go there if you are like me, and take these things as a knive to the heart.
The organization is Front Range Equine Rescue. They talk about a horse named "Cloud". The support the anti-slaughter bill, of course, but they also want to stop roundups of wild horses. Dear God! Why would anyone round up wild horses--but I know that is true, awful as it is.
Does anyone out there know about the group? I'd just appreciate your feedback.
Like Marge, I can't just donate and donate, but I like to give something, even if small, to something legit as well as worthy.
Thank you.

Good Morning Family Of Barbaro
Like so many I am incensed over the story of little Fitch and agree with Marky that the theft of horses will drop significantly with the end of HS. Another thing is weighing heavily on my mind right now which is the export of our horses to Mexico to slaughter. Folks, if you think HS is bad here the horror in Mexico is unimaginable. More and more of our horses will find their way across the border if the plants here close. The Bills to ban horse slaughter also ban the transport of horses to slaughter. We have to get on board with our new strategy of calls to the Committee most likely to support us. PLEASE....volume is now hugely important. We need to get everybody and anybody who will listen on board making these calls. Go through your address books and hook people up to the names and numbers to call each and every day and ask them to do the same. Don't forget the White Mare and what she had to endure in Mexico.

Maria K.

First of all- good for you for offering your services to the horses, they will benefit and you will too! My suggestion would be to tell the people at the ranch that you need orientation and that you're not familiar with how to be around a horse so they give you full instructions. Each ranch handles things differently but basically keep in mind that many horses exhibit fight or flight response to what they perceive as a threat of any kind. You sound like a gentle person so I doubt you'll be running at the horses waving your arms! My "rule of thumb" is to always let a horse know where you are when you are near them, never approach them from behind, do not stand behind their back legs, move slowly, look into their eyes with confidence and love, keep your feet out of reach of theirs. If you show fear they will see it, if you don't feel confident pretend you are! Have fun!

I tried to get to the site to see pictures of Fitch but they would not come up. Perhaps that is a good thing because I have so much trouble watching horseracing anymore. My heart breaks for those horses injured and gone, and my sympathies go to those who loved the horses and are now bereft.

And I light candles.

Keep up the good works on behalf of the animals that are so in need of our help. I'm doing my part as well. It is minor in comparison to what some of you awesom people are accomplishing, but every bit helps, no?

Socorro posted such a great idea -- that you include her legislative links in your updates each day. I have been surprised to read recently how many new posters have been reading your updates for months, and never noticed until now that there was a Comments section. So they have missed out on all the anti-slaughter discussion and strategies. For all the other readers like these, who have not yet discovered the Comments section, please consider daily posting of Socorro's links in your updates. Socorro can probably email them to you in html format that you can easily cut and paste. I think Mrs. Jackson would be very happy and grateful if you could provide this information each day.

I want to congratulate Cathy Potter for coming up with a winning anti-slaughter strategy, and Shelley A and Debra WI for adopting it here on the board.

A couple of weeks ago, Cathy came up with the idea of our targeting a few committee members each day, so that our calls would be consolidated into an impressive grouping. Shelley and Debra began posting selected target committee members each day.

Now, Habitat for Horses has seen what we are doing, and is so impressed by this idea that they are adopting it as their strategy as well. They have refined the strategy by focusing on the particular committee that is friendliest to our cause, where our calls will do the most good. So Shelley and Debra are now posting Habitat for Horses' selections, inspired by our board's strategy.

Please make these calls, today and each day. It will take no more than a few minutes of your time, and it is the volume of ALL of our calls that will make the difference in moving the bill to the floor for a vote.

Reading about little Fitch makes me ashamed I live in South Carolina. It is appalling what was done to that defenseless little colt. Those who did it will burn in hell. I hope when they are caught they get a particular judge I know of when they go to trial. He will make them wish they had never even thought about taking horses and doing what they did to him.

Great work FOBs on the rescue this weekend. I was out of touch and just read about it this morning.

Is that all Rosie does is eat? I swear I've never seen her face! Maybe that's the problem, she can't stop eating long enough to have that little one. At the rate she's eating, it may come out a full grown horse.

Posted by: doe at March 5, 2007 4:52 PM

This was a difficult weekend when our hearts have been touched by several individual horses at risk.

There are so many horses out there who are at risk, and this is why we are working so hard to end slaughter. I just want to repeat a mantra we have used on this board before, when we have been overwhelmed by sadness at particular instances of horses at risk: We can't save them one horse at a time. We don't have the money or the resources to do this, and it can become overwhelming to think about our powerlessness to do so.

This is why our overall strategy is to pass the legislation that will end the travesty of horse slaughter for foreign human consumption, and put an end to ALL of the heartbreaking stories. Each horse is special, and there are so many horses who stories we don't hear. Please don't become overwhelmed. This is tough stuff, and the important thing is that we all continue to work toward ending slaughter.

If you do choose to donate to a rescue, use ordinary caution in making sure it is a legitimate charity, such as Rosie's MHR, for example. If you wish instead to donate your money to the very important cause of laminitis research or some other cause altogether, or if you can't afford to make a donation of any kind, this is fine. Our efforts toward passing the legislation are really the most important thing we can do for the multitude of horses whose stories we will never know.

We can't save them one horse at a time, but WE CAN SAVE THEM ALL.

### Maria K., Good for you for getting involved! Bonnie MacRaith has set you on the right path.

Lucky for you there is a wonderful exhibit on "Genuine Risk" (the second filly to ever win the Kentucky Derby -- 1980) at the Loudoun Farm Museum in Sterling. Genuine Risk is the oldest living Derby winner and enjoys her retirement close by (to you) in Upperville, VA. The exhibit includes a how-to on how-to groom and tack up a horse.

Remember no sudden movements.
Turn you cellphone off or at least down low.
And I always talk to them and let them know what we're doing. "Hey Red, we're putting your blanket on." "Signal Tower, here's some fresh, clean water." You'll be an old hand in no time.

PS: East of the Mississippi, ranches are usually called farms -- at least in our area. Wink, wink: Bonnie MacRaith

REPOST FROM DISCUSSION BOARD FROM JEN REGARDING FITCH:

I just got off with the doctor. Fitch is not doing as well as he had hoped.

As I told you Fitch has been very very sick. As a result, his red blood cell count is low. His glucosamine is at 15 and should be around 100. So as a result it is very hard for Fitch's body to fight and to heal. Of all the horses there, Fitch was the one who is so frail and fragile and always has been. He has been sick, he was invested with worms and we nearly lost him once because of a severe case of pneumonia when he arrived. This is the one horse that doesn't have any fight left in him and for this to happen to him... it is just too much. As I said yesterday Fitch doesn't have any fight or will in him and the doctor confirmed it today.

The doctor asked Tracy today "how far do we go. I know you are a rescue and I don;t know the limitations..." Tracy told him that we go until he (the doctor) tells us there is no hope or that Fitch is in severe pain and nothing can be done... we go!!! I told him... pretend his name is Barbaro... that is how far we go. Fitch has been given a raw deal in life and we made a committment to him to change that and we fully intend to.. Tracy is working herself day and night for this baby, at his side constantly and taking care of the other horses... she has a wonderful family and I am glad they are part of our family.

So what the doctors says is... If they can keep Fitch on virtually basic life support for the next three days he can gain the strength and his body can fight his injuries. Fitch needs a transusion immediately... Tracy is going home to get Tonka to be the donor. Tonka is a big mule who is hands down the most gentle of all the horses, he is healthy and strong and a true gentle heart. We got Tonka from Another Chance 4 Horses, who had pulled him form the pens at New Holland. Tonka almost got adopted but then at the last minute didn't..we could never figure out why ... now we know why...

Fitch cannot seem to support himself and stay standing so this is what needs to be done.. We need to just hope and pray that over the next few days he can regain his strength and fight.. I will keep everyone posted as I get the updates......

Please keep the prayers coming, this little man needs them desperately... He needs to have a chance to live and enjoy life.. He deserves to know that life does get better than what he knows!!!

Thank you.

Thank you for the update on Fitch, and god bless all of you. "Treat him as if he was Barbaro"...he deserves it and more.

Come on, Fitch. Don't give up, baby, don't give up.

Barbaro, please help this baby. It is too soon for him to join you. He hasn't had a chance at life yet.

I don't know is anyone remembers the 70 horses in Maryland that need help?
They are in Hagerstown Humane Society.

The State is not going to support these abuse horses, and the Humane Society need help.

Iam going to try to get 100 bale of hey to them, but I need help, I can't get the transporation to haul the hay.
Can anyone help get the hay there. I have a farmer that is going to sell me the hay, but will not haul to Hagerstown.

Thank you Jen for the detailed update on Fitch.

My heart is breaking all over again today in reading this last update... We are so thankful that he is in your loving care, and we will all pray for him to be able to fight thru this. I pray that Barbaro will lean down and whisper in his ear "You can do this, there are so many that love you- please fight". I just want him to know that he is loved.

It is kind of like the line that Edgar Prado used once before - If all the tears shed for him could heal him, he would be fine by now.

A warm welcome to all NEW FOBS

It is not one of our happiest days in the Barbaro Nation. Today marks 5 weeks since we lost our champ. The past weekend brought stories of cruelty and frantic attempts to save a few horses.

Despite this we continue to honor the legacy of Barbaro. Join our family and pray, donate or even better call your senator or a committee member.

Let your voice be heard as a citizen. Scroll up to a post with timestamp 1,15 by Shelley and Debra. Help us stop cruelty.

All this courtesy of Barbaro.

My heart is breaking for little Fitch. I don't think that this is the appropriate forum to talk about what I would like to say and do to those that hurt hi - it just makes me SICK!!!!

Barbaro, you watch over this little one and give him some of your strength, courage and figt. He really needs you now to inspire him from above.

Please Lord, look after Fitch, let him beat the odds and those who tried to destroy him. He can be proof that those inhumane, poor excuses for human beings cannot take animals down out of hate.

On another note....
For goodness sake Rosie, let's have that baby :)

My thoughts and prayers are with little Fitch. I wish I was a judge and had the low life in front of me. They would be drug behind a pickup truck for miles until the life was out of them. Then I would sentence them to hell. Sorry to be so violent . I work with abused rescue dogs and they are burned with cigarettes, etc etc. They are all Gods creatures and it is our responsibility to care for them. Am really missing Barbaro. God bless the Jacksons who did everything that was possible for Bobby. There is a saying 'we are sending you on a journey free from pain. not because we didnt love you but loved you too much to force you to stay.' Run free Barbaro

All questions welcome. Yes, anybody can call the Reps on today's list...they are all on the HOUSE COMMITTEE ON ENERGY & COMMERCE (FOR HR 503) --
Say that you support the bill (meaning you're against slaughter) and politely request that they take the necessary steps to move HR 503 out of committee and to the House floor for a vote asap.

Anything you think should be added to the above?

Great thanks for the links...yes, it would be great if they were posted daily at the top of the page...it would make it significantly easier for newcomers to access them...

The young Prince blinked as the clear bright light met his eyes. Only a moment before, he was in a dimly lit place, filled with love, but clouded by a greying cover of saddness.

Only a moment before, he was in great pain, but felt no fear. For there, he did see the familiar faces, sights, sounds, and smells of what had been his home for so long.

He noticed the cloud surrounding the many gentle people, who loved and cared for him...who came here now, to be with him, and he wondered...but only for a moment.

The cloud thickened and covered them. The light quickly dimmed, then everyone was gone. There was only clear bright light all around. It was true light, with crystaline essence of every prismatic element. All colors so pure and alive that he blinked at the startling contrast to everything that he had ever known.

He felt a quickening all over his body. He felt stronger and more alive than he ever had...and his feet didn't hurt anymore. With this realization, he began to run. He outran even the brightness. He was free! His companion was the wind itself, or so it seemed, for as he ran, he knew he wasn't alone. He was ONE with the wind.

...to be continued

See Friar Tuck's advice to you, above. The only thing I would add is, don't be demoralized if they ask for your address, as several of them are doing. Horse slaughter is a national issue, and you are calling them not as a constituent of their district, but as a citizen who is concerned about a nationwide problem that their committee is addressing. You don't need to be from their district, or even from their state, to give them your input on this issue.

Alex - thanks for all your updates and support!
Glad to hear you finally got a day off from work!

Laurie H., I'm so glad to hear that you're home and getting well. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Jen - Thanks for the update this morning on little Fitch. I sent in a donation yesterday and have lit candles for him. I hope he gets some fight into him and can overcome all he's been through. Thank you for not giving up on him. he's so young and this is so cruel...crying again.
We must lift him up to the Lord in prayer for the healing of his little body.

Yesterday, I was glad to have a small part in donating and saving the 4 (5?) horses for Columbia Basin Horse Rescue. It made me happier after such a sad weekend of news, to know that this morning they're not headed to Canada for slaughter, but instead to freedom and forever loving homes.

Stephanie, I'm glad you're getting some sleep! Rosie will be living in 2 zip codes if she goes through all the equine food groups! C'mon Rosie, save some food for your friends!

Thanks Barbaro for giving us the strength to do your good works. We miss you and always will.

CORRECTING ERROR IN PHONE NUMBER OF REP. CUBIN

Shelley A, Debra, Friar Tuck - all who post numbers to call - and all who call:

Just "doing my duty" - and when I reached Rep. Stephen Buyer's phone and talked to his aide Casey, a very nice and helpful young man, he advised that the phone we have listed for Rep. Barbara Cubin is wrong; he was taking the calls for her as well because Rep. Buyer's phone is erroneously listed in our calling info for today, as her phone number. He provided the correct number for Rep. Cubin, which is:

202-225-2311

Don't worry, your calls already made, will be counted - Casey is so nice that he has been tallying calls for HR 503 on his Rep's phone and passing the info on to Rep Cubin.

Please correct the info in your future posts. I will also post this at Forum.

What wonderful work was done in Barbaro's name this weekend! Pulling 4 horses out of the SH pipeline! I love following these rescues at the Forum. Wish I could help financially, but at this point all I can give is my time and attention.

Hope poor little Fitch will make it and that his ordeal will serve to focus attention on what is wrong with some people.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

Hope Peace Love Music & RESPECT - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

###########
PS - this afternoon is my worst time ever, every 8 weeks, when it is touch and go whether Blackie (comfortable/cripple) will be able to stand on the "bad" front leg long enough for the farrier to trim the opposite front hoof. Since her condition is getting progressively more extreme, it's harder every time. Wish we had a sling available just for the trim! Appointment at 4 pm CST, for those inclined to send good thoughts.
Remember, it was Blackie who caused me to find MHR and then bring MHR here - so Blackie is Rosie's baby's godmother, just as sure as Barbaro is the godfather. And so I tell her every time I see her. CJ

I read about poor Fitch, and just donated via Paypal. I'm not afraid to say I'd like to hang the SOBs myself who did this. I pray that this little guy can hang on and overcome all this. If a horse isn't safe inside a rescue facility, where can he be safe???

I also made my calls. I think it would help if we knew what states these reps are from. The previous lists had that information. In case you have the chance to have a real conversation with them, it helps to be informed.

I had a momentary shock when I saw that Rosie was welcomed into equine heaven--must be another Rosie? Other than that, it was so delightful to read about the cloud switch controversy. Equine heaven, in the midst of so much sadness, you make me smile every day.

Hi Alex,

I'm chuckling about your massive buck this AM, and the feeling like you're being launched into orbit...nothing quite like it, is there, to get your attention and your blood moving? My bet would be with the wind as much as anything...the saddlebreds used to use it as an excuse for being terrified of everything that moved...especially after a day off :o)!

Cheers, yourself!

"I told him... pretend his name is Barbaro... that is how far we go." Bless you, Jen, for trying your utmost for Fitch!

Dear God, we ask your mercy this day on a baby colt named Fitch, a glorious child of your creation. If it be your will, give him the strength to survive his injuries and thrive in a safe home. Lord, he is only a baby and hasn't even had a chance to live yet. Please wrap Fitch and his caregivers in your loving embrace and give them strength and courage and wisdom to help him heal. We ask this in the name of Him who gave our beloved Barbaro an eternal home in the kingdom of heaven. AMEN.

Surgeon works on life after Barbaro
'Some [letters] are so eloquent ... they reopen wounds'
By Sandra McKee
Sun Reporter
Originally published March 5, 2007
PHILADELPHIA // It has been more than a month since Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's fight against injuries suffered in the Preakness Stakes and ensuing complications ended in death Jan. 29 at the New Bolton Center, and life for his surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, has yet to return to normal.

Still, a question about how Richardson, who had spent every day with Barbaro for eight months, was feeling brought an incredulous laugh.

"I'm a grown man," Richardson said. "I'm supposed to be in control of my emotions."

But it seems he still isn't quite yet.

Many of the 350 who listened to Richardson speak about Barbaro on Thursday at a "Vet 2 Vet" session during the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Annual Conference, a continuing education gathering for veterinarians and veterinary technicians, said that Richardson had to compose himself several times during his talk.

St. George Hunt, a Wayne, Pa., vet specializing in small animals, noted how emotional Richardson was during the presentation and how much Richardson and Barbaro had done for veterinary medicine.

"As a vet, he opened the world's eyes to how well-trained and skilled and impassioned we are," Hunt said. "We're all deeply indebted to him and Barbaro."

After his initial protest, Richardson allowed even the sympathetic letters he is continuing to receive cause him pain.

Richardson has responded to some of the notes, but said to answer all of them would be impossible. "I am supposed to be doing surgery and teaching," he said.

In early February, he had a scheduled speaking engagement in Palm Beach, Fla., and said he found it difficult to talk about the horse who had become so special to him. He was hoping his speech at the Penn conference would be easier, as he included medical information to try expanding an understanding of Barbaro's case in the medical community.

"But it's not easy," he said.

He has not taken any extended time off since losing the horse to laminitis that eventually spread to all of the champion's feet, though Richardson did add four days to the Florida trip to play golf with friends.

Asked whether he has felt less stress during the past month, Richardson looked a little blank.

"Stress?" he said. "It goes right by me, I suppose. It hasn't been that long since we lost him. I wish he was alive. I'd take the stress in a heartbeat. But, I guess, on a day-to-day basis, there is less stress. But we do have other patients."

At the moment, Richardson is again treating a Kentucky Derby winner.

The 1998 champion Real Quiet, who had been standing at stud at Dr. William Solomon's Pin Oak Lane Farm in New Freedom, Pa., arrived at New Bolton Feb. 19, suffering from lameness. Since then, a nuclear scan identified a problem in his back feet, where his pulse was high and there was a lot of heat in both feet.

Richardson was able to get abscesses to pop out of each of Real Quiet's hind feet last week, and is to give the horse a bone scan on both hind legs today.

"I'm cautiously optimistic - until we get [the] scan results," said Mike Jester, syndicate manager for Real Quiet, who receives condition reports from Richardson. "He had been quite lame in both hind legs, but when I saw him Thursday, he was walking comfortably. Dean is very happy with his progress."

Jester said he could not say enough good things about Richardson and his dedication.

"None of us needs to lose another Kentucky Derby winner," he said. "None of us needs another heartbreaker."

JULIE Z

GREAT to see you again. Thank you for the article updating us on Dr. Richardson. While it hurts to hear how much pain he still has (and to know the Jacksons, Michael and Peter are probably still feeling that way too), it is uplifting at the same time to hear about the level of caring in the veterinary profession.

I am hopeful that more veterinarians may join us in the anti-slaughter fight. I am going to talk to my vet of 20 years--I already know his tech is on board. And I am going to take some materials to the emergency hospital where my Felix went to sleep; they were all very, very kind and compassionate there...

Blackie and CJ, good luck today. CJ, let us know how it goes.

Matz 3-year-old Chelokee wins despite trip

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Welsch, Daily Racing Form 3/3/2007 Back to story

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Michael Matz, who became the biggest story on the Kentucky Derby trail and beyond a year ago with Barbaro, may find himself back on the Derby road again this spring following Chelokee's game victory over a strong field of first-level allowance 3-year-olds going a mile and one-eighth here Saturday.

Chelokee, a son of Cherokee Run owned by the Centennial Farms, overcame a strange trip to post his second victory in five starts. Chelokee finished full of run under jockey Mark Guidry after dropping back to rear of the pack around the second turn to defeat the highly regarded pair of For You Reppo and Sightseeing.

"We could have run him in a stakes but I thought this was the best way to go, in an allowance race, and let him show us if he wants to go the next step," said Matz. "This was a pretty good field he beat, especially for him to make a move like that today over this speed-biased track. I'm real pleased and I think off of this effort he deserves the chance to do something good."

Matz, who won the $1 million Florida Derby here a year ago with Barbaro as a prelude to his smashing victory in the Kentucky Derby, would not commit to any specific race for Chelokee's next start.

"He came back a little close today, in just three weeks," said Matz, "so we'll see how he comes out of the race first before deciding where he'll go next."

Good afternoon FOB’s

I meant to write this yesterday, but did not have time. After reading the post that Mary s. wrote (time stamp March 4, 2007 7:10 PM) my emotions stirred up again. I am feeling much the same way as she does. I am sorry to see her leave. I hope she returns.

I am angered by the fact that we all prayed so hard for so long only to have Barbaro be taken from this world. This was a journey that was supposed to have a miraculous ending. The only story is this era that we all live in, that had offered us any bit of hope. Look at the news around us. I cannot find anything that offers hope. For God’s sakes, look at poor Fitch’s story. I hope that maybe this poor creature will turn out ok.

I’m angry that we have to kiss our elected officials A@#es to even get them to respond to our calls, letters ands e-mails. Don’t they work for us? We are the one’s who put them where they are today. I know of one Senator from Ohio (George Voinovich) who still hasn’t responded after 5 weeks of e-mails. I know I will not vote him back in next time around.

Thanks for “listening” Proud to be an FOB

Are the forums down? I can't get anything to load since 12:53pm CST. A post I made 15 minutes ago still isn't showing up?

I've got $15 bucks in the pool, all dates that have passed. Think I'm gonna have to pick another time here pretty soon cause I want to win and send the money for Rosie's baby care.

Hi everyone, got very swamped as in busy, but always with you and holding hands, paws, hooves with all four-legged FOBs, too!

God Bless you, Jen, for what you are doing for FITCH, for the care and the love. Dearest Fitch, I so wish I could sit with you and comfort your precious head in my soft lap. But may you feel St. Francis near honey comforting you . . . and may you feel Barbaro's soft nuzzle to give you strength.
My heart hurts for this poor baby . . . unspeakable cruelty . . .I am losing what faith I had left in humans.

HARRIETTE - your beautiful words, they sustain me . . . . thank you

OTHERLYN - simply beautiful . . . I can't wait to read the rest, thank you

JULIE Z - thank you for posting the article from the Baltimore Sun about Dr. R, thank you so much, I hold him in my heart every day.

MARTITA - as always, you sustain us, too, thank you

St. Gerard please continue to watch over and bless dear ROSIE and CHUNKY, all expecting equine Mom's, may they be safe, their pregnancies healthy, have very safe deliveries, and may their foals be healthy and strong.

My heart beats for your heart, BARBARO, always and forever, run with the angels honey! Love you so much!

Bobby Jackson, I must ask . . . are you and dear FOG up there running wild race Marches this morning??? The March winds are positively howling down here and I had a little hunch you boys may be racing the wind up there.
Felix, I bet you're snoozing in Barbaro's warm golden straw while he's out racing with Fog. We know you are the sleek panther kitty - don't you forget to send kitty whispers to your Mama and sister Lizzie, they will hear you...

Alex, love hearing about your mornings with the horses!! I think those horses love you to pieces and they secretly enjoy finding ways to
