    Barbaro Updates: 233

    updates are now here.

Update 1621: Premium Tap completes his last major work before the Dubai World Cup: Premium Tap Drills, Gets Go-Ahead for World Cup. This work appears more typical of a non north american work where the specific time of the work is less important to the appearance (trainer) and feel (rider) of the work.

Gary Stevens makes an interesting career move: Nakatani Says Stevens to Become His Agent.

Update 1620: This morning I went over to Lael Farm to pick up a copy of Kentucky Derby 132 Review, which is essentially a photographic essay of Barbaro's Kentucky Derby victory. It is the first time Churchill Downs has produced a photographic review of their Derby, and they plan this to be the first of many. They could not have timed that decision better, the pictures are awesome and the captions work nicely. Reading through it (it is a quick read) you also learn a little Derby history; for example the Kentucky Derby is the longest continuously running sporting event in America. Leonard Lusky, the editor for the book, will be on hand at the Barbaro Birthday Celebration at Delaware Park.
    edit: added continuously

Update 1619: A very bright sunny and very chilly morning at Fair Hill. I went in to gallop Hawty Creek since she had not been out of the barn for a couple of days. We went three turns of the Tapeta track, galloping about a mile and a half all together. She went well. I then got on one for Tim, Grandma. Tim was on Quick Quest, and we galloped a mile and a quarter. Tim had a few going out today, but I did not feel like hanging around, its just too cold for this time of year!

Invasor had his final piece of work on friday in the US in preparation for the Dubai World Cup: Invasor right on cue with bullet work in preparation for Dubai World Cup. He worked 5/8ths in just under a minute with the plan to ship out to Dubai on tuesday. He will be part of a 14 horse US team (down from 19 last year): Invasor, Lava Man among 14 American-based horses headed to Dubai.

Update 1618: The following are the racing press reports of the three Derby preps on saturday:

    Tampa Bay Derby
    Champ survives thrilling duel
Street Sense Noses 'Saturday in Tampa Bay Derby
Street Sense edges Any Given Saturday in thrilling Tampa Bay Derby finish

    Rebel Stakes
    Curlin romps in Rebel
Curlin Sweeps Into Derby Picture With Rebel Rout
Curlin surges clear in second career start to win the Rebel Stakes

    San Felipe
Cobalt Blue comfortable San Felipe winner
Cobalt Blue Gets the Green in San Felipe
Cobalt Blue two-length winner of San Felipe Stakes

Update 1617: Cobalt Blue took the San Felipe in a wire to wire performance. It was a short field, but a good performance for the first time around two turns off a lay-off. Both Cobalt Blue and Curlin (Rebel) now need to proove themselves against seasoned triple crown prospects, but they both performed well today for sure.

Update 1616: Curlin was very impressive in his first start since breaking his maiden, running away with the Rebel. Xchanger set the comfortable pace, but weakened along the rail.

Update 1615: Street Sense and Any Given Saturday, in a head bob for the Tampa Bay Derby, a new track record and a brilliant stretch dual. Smart ride by Calvin Borel.

Update 1614: Rachel, from Kennett Florist, left this comment (timestamp: 10:33pm):

Happy St. Patrick's Day FOB Family! Everyone is Irish today!
What a week it's been. Sorry to hear of the twins, Blackie and Molasses.
I've been determined to post regularly, but it seems that time finds a way of getting away from me. Alie has been away all week on vacation (about time... she really needed a break), so I've been flying solo. We had a couple trips to NBC this week for the donor horses and ICU animals. It was nice to see the staff. We miss our daily routine.
So on Monday, I get a call from someone who works with NBC (the network) telling me they are doing a piece and Barbaro and Mrs Jackson told them she should come visit the shop. With Alie away, they were stuck with me. Before I knew it I had a mic taped to me and was being interviewed. Good grief, I can't even remember what I said... hope it made some sense. I was trying to mention every horse cause I could think of, mostly we talked about all of the wonderful FOBs. It's airing on April 29 at 5:00, which I think was posted earlier this week.
Wednesday and Thursday we had the great opportunity to meet a few of the fans that had come for Dr R's lecture. Thank you all for taking the time to stop in the shop. It was a tiny taste of what is to come on April 29th. We are so looking forward to meeting the faces behind the voices we've been talking to all these months.
I spent most of today shovelling out the sidewalks and driveway at the shop, since Alie's hubby, Steve usually takes care of that, I had to bite the bullet and dig. I am looking forward to warm weather. My son has been pestering me to get him on a horse for months now (his enthusiasim for horses has grown these past few months). Alex, you need to hook us up! :)
By the way has Alex mentioned we're auctioning him off for the Relay for Life this week at The Whip?? I sort of roped him into it, but thanks for going along with it Alex. Should be a fun night... Good food, beverages and men... what more could a gal want?? And it's all for a good cause.
Well, I think we're all caught up. Thanks to all who continue to send cards to us and treats to animals and two legged creatures at NBC. I will try to post a little more regularly. Love to you all!
    WE BELIEVE!!

Update 1613: I just spoke to Peter Brette. Chelokee worked a half mile today, a good work in 48. He open galloped some before going into the work. He was upbeat about the work and says the current plan is for the Florida Derby.

Jeannine Edwards provides a little more insight into her forthcoming interview with Dr. Richardson: Dr. Richardson lecture. Jeannine and team will on ESPN 7-8 pm east coast time today covering the San Felipe, with recordings of the Tampa Bay Derby and the Rebel Stakes.

Update 1612: Thank you Richard Zwirn for sharing your grief: Hope Springs.

Update 1611: The track was closed this morning and the horsepaths were not useable either so another day in the shedrow. I ended up riding six, so that means jogging about twelve miles. Hawty Creek was first to shedrow. She is doing well and I really need to get her in a race. We (her owner and I) forgot to enter her for a race today at Philadelphia Park. That actually turned out to be a good thing, they cancelled racing. Lets hope they write the race back next weekend and we enter. The two I shedrowed for Tim were Nonpariel and Grandma. Both were fine as were the three more I rode. One of the other trainer's in the barn, who I ride for, had a horse in at Laurel today. He was running a temperature this morning so had to be scratched. That's the problem with this time of year and the major swings in temperature, its easy for the horses to get sick. Anyway, a quiet morning without incident so a good thing. Hopefully now the weather will warm back up a bit, it is bright sunshine but we do have a snow covering and likely that will be here for a day or two.

Update 1610: The final trivia question, which was worth $100 to the horse rescue of choice of the winner, was won by Glenye Cain Oakford (Daily Racing Form writer and author of The Home Run Horse.) Glenye's response:

If I have my history straight, Renny prevented Bregawn from planting his feet, as he was wont to do, by walking him around at the start.

Incidentally, about Michael Dickinson: he also saddled a world-record 12 winners in a single day on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) of 1982.

Two horse rescues will benefit with a cheque for a $100 each (Glenye offered to also send a $100 contribution), they are Kentucky Equine Humane Center and Old Friends.

The Gold Cup at Cheltenham yesterday was won in emphatic style (despite a slight error at the last) by the heavy favourite and seemingly superstar Kauto Star: KAUTO EARNS A GOLD STAR, excerpt:

"This isn't just good for me, it is good for racing and he is a real superstar.

"All the talk about his jumping has been a load of rubbish, why couldn't people just concentrate on the fact he had won all his five races this season? He has silenced his critics now.

"Ruby knew what he had to do and I just told him to go out there and do what you do best.

"I told him to just have faith in him and that is what he did. It feels brilliant, it's absolutely unbelievable, I cannot tell you how nerve-wracking this last month has been.

    Happy St Patrick's Day everyone

Just lost what I posted, I'll try again! Hope everyone has a good weekend. We've got racing here, but everyone is still buzzing about Cheltenham. If you want to see Kauto Star's run , there is this video of the Gold Cup. I hope I don't lose it this time.

It's good to know that Bregawn is doing his bit for the rescue horses (with generous help from Alex). This is a really lovely article about him: Pure-hearted Bregawn still going,24 yearson from Golden day.

I think I'll quit while I'm ahead now. Have a good weekend everbody.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

Top of the St. Patrick's Day morning to all from snowy Maine!

I don't feel badly about losing yesterday's trivia contest to Glenye Cain Oakford and kudos to her for matching Alex's contribution! I read her Home Run Horse last year, before Alex highlighted it, and loved it.

    Off to make coffee.

RIP, sweet Molasses. You're a healthy horse again up there with the Big Bay One.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!

Thanks for the updates Alex. Now it's time to start digging out. Looks like maybe a foot of snow or a little more here in the Poconos.

    Have a great weekend!

    Marge,

Could you give me the link/website info to the pet food recall list...your blue link does not work. I just fed my labs some Iams this morning, and I think they are on the list (heard on tv in other room!)

    Thanks.

Congratulations Glenye! Your book just arrived yesterday, I'm enjoying it immensely.

We're awaiting a new arrival in my small community - a descendent of Bold Ruler (with some appy and quarterhorse thrown in). I've got my video batteries charging up.

    FOB's

If you go to the forum, there are hardly any threads under Barbaro. I can't post there or I would start one myself.

Posted by: MJ at March 17, 2007 1:35 PM

    Good Morning FOB's,

Shelley - Whew last minute memory jog for me!! I nearly forgot to come over and tell ya!!

Today is that Stake Jim qualified that colt for a couple weeks back in Ok. I'd mentioned it the day of the Trials if anyone recalls. Jim won his Qualifying Trial with the second fastest time of the day. The trials were for today's $220,770.00 G-II
"Choctaw Blue Ribbon Futurity Finals" at 350 Yd. and is the 5th Race, set to start at 2:52 p.m. Jim is riding #6 Illegal Te and please double check the pp# if you're gambling. He is at 10/1 MLO! Not bad considering Jim hasn't been out of the money in quite awhile. We really like this youngster for the win, but I sent my bet across the board and a modest win ticket on top of that. Cuz I do know for sure Jim isn't going all that way cuz he needs the practice. Looking at the field we really do think he's got a good shot at winning it.

The Futurity might be televised even though it is for Quarter Horses, if not you might be able to watch the race at YouBet.com but I'm not sure about that as I've not checked.

Yes it was my plan to be there in OK for today's stakes but my sweet little Dooh Dah dog isn't feeling very well since about 8:00 p.m. last night, and I didn't want to leave her all alone for 12 or 14 hours today. Being the good Mommy I hope I am, I opted to stay home and take care of her. Ya'll send your good luck wishes for Jim will ya? This would be a decent paycheck for him if he wins the race, and it might even buy me a ticket to Del. Park for the B'day Bash if,.....he wins!!

Oh and Jim also rides the 4th race which is the G-III "Choctaw Blue Ribbon Derby Finals". He's 15/1 MLO in that one and riding the only filly in the race. I can't recommend her for wagering as I'm not at all familiar with her PP's and Jim hasn't been on her before. But thought I'd mention it as it's also a stake and she did qualify to be in the race so we do know she is fast.

Win, Lose, or Draw today, keep good thoughts for safe uneventful trips!

Hope you can get to watch the race somewhere. Cross fingers!!

    Go Get The Money!!

wow..the b-day celebration is in the Delaware paper. He even called us FOB's.

By JACK IRELAND, The News Journal
    Posted Saturday, March 17, 2007
Barbaro celebration starting to take shape

Sharon Crumb, who is organizing the Fans of Barbaro birthday celebration April 29 at DelPark with Fair Hill (Md.) horseman Alex Brown, said the event has the support of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association in Kentucky.

Crumb said the NTRA wants to make sure that interested people go through Crumb and Brown for all information.

"We are sure that the Jacksons and Barbaro's good name will now be protected," Crumb said.

Crumb said artist Nick Martinez, who is selling a print of Barbaro's Kentucky Derby win that has been approved by the Jacksons, will attend and have a table in the DelPark Grove that day.

The FOBs have planned this outing to celebrate the life of Barbaro and his actual birth date, April 29, 2003. Cost for the barbeque lunch in the grove is $34.22 a person and payable to Crumb.

    MJ,

If you go to the forum under Barbaro and click on the little purple number underneath the topic, it will show you all the categories for conversations about Barbaro. I think right now its says like 28,526 meassages. When you first go in there it is only showing the topics with the most recents posts or conversations. Try that and see if it works for you. It can be a little tricky to find stuff in there.

Hope everyone is starting to have a good day. Still dark over here on the west coast. I think it is going to be in the 70's today. Our weather is getting pretty nice, however I had to bump the heaters this morning cause it was chilly when I woke up.

OK I want the book. I have heard enough about it now that I need a link or whatever to go and fetch it.

    ## Alex hope your having a safe exersise ride. I like the trivia questions. I got caught up on my homework last night so I am able to work on trivia questions. Those are FUN!!!!!! Love to do research, finding out so much information along the way that is not relevent to what your looking for. Another one Alex??????? :-)

Have to work today, not usually here on the weekends.

###I am so sad to hear about Molasses, I had prayed so hard that he would recover, and those poor twins who didn't make it, so very sad. Glad to hear that Sassy will be ok.

##I hope all the horses racing today come home safely, we are hearing too much sadness here lately.

##Alex, thanks for the updates and all the interesting articles, I have learned so much. Hope your morning excercises go well in this crummy weather.

###Barbaro, please take Molasses, Blackie and the twins under your wing and show them all the special spots. I miss you big boy so very much.

The Colorado/Nebraska Barbaro birthday celebration is firming up for April 29th.

It will be a picnic on the deck at Colorado Thoroughbred Rescue just north of Ft. Collins...early afternoonish. ...and a visit with the horses, of course. It's a small, but high quality rescue that currently houses FOB rescued racer, Luna Joe (soon to be adopted!) Lunch, birthday cake, treats for the equines, great hosts, and 2 or three very affectionate rescued horses.

It appears some car pools are forming from the Denver area. More details as things develop.

We's love all the Colorado FOBs to attend. Post here or on the General section of the discussion board on the thread called Colorado/Nebraska FOBs if you need information. I'll search here for items addressed to me.

It's going to be a great day!

Hi! To Liz - thanks so much for the link to the Gold Cup! What a race! The more I keep learning, the more admiration I have for these super talented horses and their steadfast riders. I've always been so scared of jumping - lol! It's such a shame the jockeys do not ever get the credit they deserve for the athletic, demanding, incredible jobs that they do.

Good morning to all, and Happy St. Patrick's Day! Sorry to be so late in responding to all of the very kind posts about The Home Run Horse--thank you! The book WAS a lot of fun to research, and I spent a lot of time happily snooping around the wonderful old books in the Keeneland library. Then, too, in my job I'm lucky to come across some of the Thoroughbred world's great characters and stories that really want telling. So it's especially gratifying to hear from readers who have enjoyed the ride along with you!

Thanks also to all of you for your efforts on behalf of horses!

    #####

I wonder if Rosie could be carrying twins???? There was a farm in Delaware I think (Maryland perhaps). It was on Animal Planet several years ago--as a warm up to the Derby. Turns out one of their mares was pregnant with twins. One died in utero. But the other foal "Patrick" lived. I think mom carried him for something like 13 1/2 months. I just know it was a LONG LONG TIME.

Busy today. I'll check and see if I can find the video and get back to you guys with details tomorrow...

Have fun all. Happy St Paddy's Day. And Barbaro I think of you often.

    REPOST - ASKING FOR HELP!

I have never been one to get involved in political issues - said I never would, but I bet a lot of us have said that before and look at us. I strongly believe in what we are trying to accomplish now. It's in my heart constantly as I know it is in many of yours. The hardest thing for me besides the issue at hand is the lack of time I have to devote to doing all of the things I want to do to help end the slaughter of our beloved horses.

There are some things I can do and this is one of them. I, once again, would like to ask everyone's help to get our mayor, Paula Bacon, re-elected. We are not talking about the availability of a large re-election budget here - Kaufman is a town of approximately 15,000 and as most of you know, home of Dallas Crown. Paula has worked hard to get this plant shut down for quite some time now and is currently up for re-election. I notice how wonderful the FOB's have been in rescuing horses who are in danger of going to the SH's, one at a time, the faithful have come through, but I am asking for you to please help someone who is in a position to help many horses stay alive! We need her to stay in office, especially with all of the legislation coming up, both in Texas and in Washington.

I am posting a website that will give you an indication of what we are up against here in Kaufman. Even though this particular article was written in 05, things have not changed. Crown is still determined to kill our horses, Paula is still determined to save them. I have also posted her website where you can make a contribution. Any amount will be appreciated. We are a little town, fighting a huge battle with a Mayor who is on our side. Please, my friends, let's keep her in office.

Mike C are you sure? I just got in my Mailbox a notice from DRF that he may run in the Lanes End!!!

    http://www.drf.com/news/article/83304.html

    Lane's End looking full up
    By MARTY McGEE
Racing officials at Turfway Park are expecting a full field for their signature event, the Lane's End Stakes, the Grade 2 race set for next Saturday at the Florence, Ky., track.

Hard Spun, the once-beaten colt who arrived at Turfway last Sunday from Oaklawn Park, looks like the probable favorite in the $500,000 Lane's End. A winner of four races to open his career, Hard Spun finished fourth at Oaklawn Park in the Feb. 19 Southwest Stakes, and trainer Larry Jones subsequently said he was not satisfied with how the colt was handling the Oaklawn surface, leading to his decision to ship him to Turfway.

Aside from Hard Spun, the lengthy list of prospects for the 1 1/8-mile Lane's End includes the Todd Pletcher-trained duo of Bullara, a recent eight-length allowance winner at Gulfstream, and Twilight Meteor, a two-time stakes winner on turf; Chelokee, a game allowance winner on the March 3 Fountain of Youth undercard at Gulfstream for trainer Michael Matz; Catman Running, winner of the March 3 John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway; and Joe Got Even, second as the favorite in the Battaglia.

Other possibles are Approval Rating, fourth in the Battaglia; Brainy Benny, a Bill Mott-trained colt who raced three times on Polytrack in England; For You Reppo, a Helen Pitts-trained colt who was second to Chelokee in the March 3 allowance; Helios, a Paraneck Stable colt based in New York; Love Dubai, who recently was acquired by Equirace.com and Mike Maker, the same owner-trainer team that won the Lane's End last year with With a City; Sedgefield, runner-up to Twilight Meteor in the Feb. 24 Hallandale Beach on the Gulfstream turf; Sports Town, third in the Feb. 10 Whirlaway at Aqueduct for trainer John Terranova; and Starbase, seventh at 34-1 in the Southwest for D. Wayne Lukas.

Only 12 horses can start in the Lane's End. Last year, a minor controversy ensued when 14 horses were entered and the likely favorite, Strong Contender, was excluded because of a lack of earnings.

The Lane's End will be televised live on ESPN. Four other stakes will be run on the undercard, led by the $100,000 Rushaway Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race also for 3-year-olds. The other secondary features are the $150,000 Bourbonette Breeders' Cup Stakes, the $50,000 Queen Stakes, and the $50,000 Hansel Stakes.

The Rushaway is under consideration as an alternative race for several Lane's End prospects, including Joe Got Even, according to trainer Phil Sims.

    Hello everyone:

I am re-posting this urgent request on this main board - Please see under "horse rescue" folders under "LCC needs help to save nursmare foals: 3/16/07"

***MATCHING CHALLENGE TO SAVE NURSEMARE FOALS***

I AM MAILING A DONATION TO THE LCC FOR $125 - WHO WILL MATCH THIS AMOUNT TO SAVE A FOAL? (AVERAGE COST IS $250).

THIS IS AN URGENT REQUEST FOR THE FOBs - We have been a great support system for the LCC in 2007, and their work continues to save more lives.

Heather at LCC told me tonight (3/16) they picked up (9) babies yesterday and more will come tomorrow - Victoria looked at her book and said this will make (64) foals saved so far this season! She also said there will be more of these urgent calls to pick up more babies in the next few days as this is the "peak" of the foal season, since more TB mares are ready to leave their farms to be re-bred - THE NURSEMARE FOAL SEASON IS IN FULL SWING. And funds are needed.

I HAVE A LOT OF FAITH IN OUR GROUP - PLEASE DONATE ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN!

Below is the address where you can mail donations:

    LAST CHANCE CORRAL
    Victoria Goss, President
    5350 Pomeroy Road
    Athens, Ohio 45701

THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH FOR ANY DONATIONS OR HELP YOU CAN GIVE THIS WONDERFUL FOAL RESCUE!

I read that he was heading to the Florida Derby and thus would have been on practically the same schedule as the one Barbaro took last year..I would think he wouldn't try the polytrack yet in hopes he wouldn't mess things up by hitting a foreign surface.

I guess we'll just have to wait n see.

Mayor Bacon is a woman (and politician) that truly cares about horses and what becomes of them. She supports the work of rescue organizations everywhere. I recently received a heart-felt email from her offering condolences when we had to euthanized one of our horses following a tragic injury. A contribution to Mayor Bacon's campaign will have far reaching positive consequences in the fight to end horse slaughter.

It's a gloriously beautiful day here in SE Texas. I wish we could send some of this sunshine to the Northeast where you have had ENOUGH cold weather. Alex, thanks for your morning updates and all you do for horses. I'll think warm thoughts for you today.

When we got the news of Molasses passing, shortly followed by the death of the twin foals last night, I cried and cried. I thought I just need not to be here anymore...some days it is so hard. But as I went to the Forums last night, we were saving stallions in MD, nursemare foals, injured, non-saleable horses in brokers lots....and praying for all the horses that we can't ransom. As the beautiful Irish blessing posted earlier says, the FOBS were "a blessing in each trial". So, even with all of the tears last night, I went to bed knowing that things are better today because of what we do, and that we will just have to keep facing the pain to keep doing what we do....for all the pretty horseys.

May all of the racers and their connections have a safe day.

Regulars, if you're out there just lurking, could you drop us a line and let us know you're there?

Good luck and safe racing to all horses and jocks today!

Well let's hope and pray today is better after all the heartaches of yesterday, Happy St Patty's to all. So how about a farmer joke to cheer us up. I think we can all identify with this one....

The Iowa Wage and Hour Department claimed a man owning a small farm was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent to interview him. "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent.

"Well, there are my hired hands. One has been with me for four years; the other for three. I pay them each $600 a week, plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a month plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit that works here about 18 hours a day. He takes home $10 a week and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every week," replied the farmer.

"That's the guy I want to talk to; the half-wit," said the agent.

The farmer said, "That would be me."

SUSAN E - thanks for the loving, gentle kick in the butt this morning! The death of Molasses yesterday really threw me over the edge...following so closely on the heels of the horrifying experience of Fitch....I have cried and cried so for these babies and was thinking, "I can't do this any more!!!"

Somehow Barbaro's death, as heartbreaking as it was and still is, seems easier for me to absorb because he was loved and treasured and spoiled (by all of us as well as by the Jacksons and his caregivers!) and God knows everything humanly possible was done to save his life...laminitis, however, is as yet beyond the realm of human endeavor in so many cases. I continue to offer daily blessings to the Jacksons and Dr. Richardson for honoring their promise to him, even though the pain of losing him has not diminished one bit for me.

HOWEVER, the "death by horrific abuse" of Fitch and Molasses (as well as tooooooo many others!) seemed the final straw for drawing on my diminishing emotional strength!

I've been making my calls and forging ahead with the "veterinarians' campaign" and look forward to the Delaware Park event, but I really haven't posted much the past few days...I felt like I couldn't endure one more nightmare!

...but thanks to you, Susan, I am now saying, "Well, if I think it's tough, WHAT ABOUT THE HORSES?" So here I am, "bloody but unbowed" and I offer heartfelt thanks to Susan and to Lizzie, who obviously whispered in her ear about me!

Love to all, Happy St. Paddy's Day...I just ordered a Galway crystal vase for the fundraiser on April 28th to honor Lael - which means LOYALTY in Gaelic - Stable...and eternal love and honor to Barbaro - CHAMPION OF MY HEART!!!!

    Happy Saint Patrick's Day Everyone!

In the words of John Lennon, "If you had the luck of the Irish you'd wish you was English instead"! I think things have changed a lot for the Irish since that was said!

I miss posting as being from California the board is often closed by the time I get to it but still enjoy reading as many posts as I can.

I saw a great kids show on PBS where they showed a big western round up where they still use horses. All the horses they were using came from rescue groups and they made a big deal about it too! They even mentioned slaughter in a delicate way, since it was a kid's show, but I thought it was great education for our younger folk. That's the place to start!

I am so way protective of her that I just can't stand it when I hear stuff like that RE: pet products.

#Alex why doesn't the weather want to behave for you over there geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh one day it is sunny and the next day it is snowing? Sounds like the west coast hahahhahahaha!!!!!!! I hope it gets nice and stays nice for ya.....
Anyway.. trivia question?????? Those are fun....

The horses here run in the rain a lot. The jockeys hate it and so do the riders but the horses love it. It isn't cold, just wet and they love it cause they can stay cool.... The track is sand so it isn't that slippery when wet. Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh I think that they need some treats. Maybe I'll go give them some laters or tomorrow......

Thank you Alex for sharing your morning and for the link to Mr. Zwirn's article. It was just so touching. It's heartening to know that there are "small scale" breeders such as he is who breed for the love and integrity of the horse. It is evident that his children will grow up with his values.

###SusanE Hope all is well with you. You are busy with your work, and all, and I haven't seen too much of you recently. Concerning the number of posts, you are right, they have diminished. I'm taking a bit of a break as well, as it's just so tiresome to get email criticizing posts, such as those I wrote on the topic of horse meat in pet products, about a specific manufacturer, and from yesterday, about posts to Sandie concerning her Maine Coon kitty. It's just annoying, and wearing me down. Maybe that's the objective. If so, I don't have the energy anymore, so I'm going to be reading more than anything

Cheryl: I'm sorry if I contributed to your feeling weary about these comments with my suggestion about Iams. It was something that I'd heard about a year ago, and I thought it would be helpful to point out, given the humane inclinations of folks here.

I had meant to post yesterday (and ran out of time) that I've done a pretty thorough search of major media, and I can't find anything that confirms PETA's allegations about Iams. I was surprised, actually, at how little coverage there was of the issue at all. I'm surprised, too, that PETA would go so public without supporting evidence, even given how radical they are.

So: I take back my misinformation about Iams. But I would appreciate people posting info about cruelty-free pet food, as I can't find any that explicitly states "cruelty-free" on their products.

Good afternoon Barbaro, Alex and all FOB's. There is so much heartache on the board, and there are so many good people suffering in grief. So many here, some better known than others, some quieter than others, seen and unseen. Yet each doing what they can, how they can, each to their own ability and their own capability. Each of us bound by our love for a magnificent horse named Barbaro. And, then, some come to create heartache, it always being easier to hurt than to help, to hate than to love, to destroy than to save. There will always be those, but in the end they will never win. For the winning is not to be found in what they do. For all who are suffering in heartache, I wish I was the poet of a Martita or a Harriette. But I am not. Poetry can help at difficult times, though, so I offer this from another.....

    Perhaps these thoughts of ours
    Will never find an audience.
    Perhaps the mistaken road
    Will end in a mistake.
Perhaps the lamps we light one at a time
Will be blown out, one at a time.
Perhaps the candles of our lives will gutter out
Without lighting a fire to warm us.

Perhaps when all the tears have been shed
The earth will be more fertile.
Perhaps when we sing praises to the sun
The sun will praise us in return.
    Perhaps these heavy burdens
    Will strengthen our philosophy.
Perhaps when we weep for those in misery
We must be silent about miseries of our own.

    Perhaps
Because of our irresistable sense of mission
    We have no choice.

After reading the comments section ... a few more thoughts ...

Harriette ... your Prayer of St. Patrick is brilliant ... and I'm going to post it again:

    The Prayer of St. Patrick

    I arise today
    Through the strength of heaven;
    Light of the sun,
    Splendor of fire,
    Speed of lightning,
    Swiftness of the wind,
    Depth of the sea,
    Stability of the earth,
    Firmness of the rock.

    I arise today
    Through God's strength to pilot me;
    God's might to uphold me,
    God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
    God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
    God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
    God's shield to protect me,
    God's hosts to save me
    Afar and anear,
    Alone or in a mulitude.

    Christ shield me today
    Against wounding
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

    I arise today
    Through the mighty strength
    Of the Lord of creation.

    ###########################

Laurie H ... Thank you for another glorious Tuck-in last night ... your softness, compassion and love continue to shine through like angels floating on gossamer wings in the moonlight ....
    ##########################

For all the losses we have experienced with Fitch, Molasses, Blackie, the baby foals ... remember Gretchen Jackson's words and they will make it all seem bearable and will give us the resolve and the reserve to go on ...

"Grief is the price we pay for love ..."

    ######################################

Without sorrow, there can be no joy
Without pain, there can be no comfort
Without tears, there can be no happiness
Without loss, there can be no gain

Everything is cyclical ... what goes up, must come down. We cannot experience any extreme emotion of one kind unless we also experience its polar opposite with the same intensity. How can we know 'black' unless we have 'white' as a comparison? How can we know abject sadness unless we have known glorious happiness as a comparison?

So to all of us who have cried oceans and oceans of tears for Barbaro, Fitch, Molasses, Blackie and all the other great and small creatures who have left us, I say to that "Rejoice" in those oceans of tears because that can only mean that you have smiled miles of happiness with sparkles and twinkles in your eye for the magnificent love you have given and received.

Indeed, Grief IS the Price you Pay for Love!!!
And there is gratitude in all of it ... look for the silver lining and you will find the blessings tucked gently inside ...

Barbaro Is Over The Rainbow. His Presence Is Showing Up Beautifully.

Posted by: Dee Mirich at March 17, 2007 7:05 PM

    Good morning, Family -
I didn't read last night - busy with daughter's birthday - but am saddened this morning to learn of the loss of Molasses. What a dear old fellow...
The twins, heartbreaking though they are, are in the course of nature, and so do not hurt quite as much. Or maybe, because I lost twins myself, I am just personally insulated against that loss.

But, oh, my very dear ones, there is such strength here. I am of two minds about the blessings of computer technology and instant communication. It seems to me that in previous times, one of the benefits of being less connected was that one did not have to know and absorb all of the ugliness and pain in the world on a daily basis. 30 years ago, we would all have known about Barbaro, but few of us would have been aware of Fitch or Apache, and barring owners, vets and barn attendants, none of us would have been watching foals be born. So, in our brave new world, we have these things at our fingertips 24/7, and there is a resultant accumulation of grief, stress and anger. It simply wears one down. Everything begins to look gray, (or, in deference to our Webmaster, grey!).

On the other side of the equation, what do we have? Rosie - the eternally pregnant horse who should have been long since dead, if her fate had not been affected - by you. How many horses are alive today because of all of you? What are the totals? 300? 400? How would we have come together without this gift? How would we have known about so many issues relating to horses without this site?

And yes, the saved and the cherished are just a drop in the bucket. But each individual entity has a chance at happiness, has a chance at comfort - because of YOU. Molasses is tragic, but he died with love around him, not shoved to the side, left to die in his own excrement, alone and frightened. The problem with life, and with knowledge of the world, is that it can be utterly overwhelming. Many people in the world see pain, and respond by building a wall around themselves, not permitting the pain to penetrate. (I am speaking here of people who simply walk away from what they see, not of those who deliberately neglect and abuse.) I cannot judge them, because I have not had their experiences.

I can, however, comment on the courage of those who choose to allow the curse of empathy to have its way with them. I can admire the warriors for the voiceless, who force themselves to continue fighting for what they know to be right, and who have not given up on the dreams of Eden. That is what I see here. For all of the steadfast, whether they post or not, for all the lunchtime callers, for all the rescue volunteers, for all those who deliberately put themselves in the way of great emotional harm and reel under its burdens and battle flashes of misery, I wish you one moment to balance the scales. Please allow yourselves to be aware of how much you achieve. Please allow yourself to metaphorically "be" fat and pregnant and sassy Rosie, Our Lady of Perpetual Pregnancy herself, with her head firmly in the feed bucked, (CHIF), and her friend next door, waiting in Stephanie's maternity ward, without a care in the world. She may be a drop in the bucket, but to her, as for all of us contained in the bubble of our own experience, she is the ONLY drop. Consider what her options were a few months ago, and consider what you all have achieved. And there are how many more for whom you have accomplished the same miracle, with dollars, or love, or prayers, or candles, or gentle hands and voices, or tender ministrations, or by simply having the guts to envision a different outcome.

Drops in the bucket, individual grains of sand on an enormous beach, but to them, dear and warm and delicious-smelling horsey entities, the entire universe.

As we used to say, "You done good."
    ##
A special aside to Cheryl Jones. I have not yet read the folderal on the board last night, so am unable to comment on what was said. But I must say this, Cheryl, echoing what I believe Robin Hoffmann wrote yesterday. I would NOT have handled January 29 without your post. I would have turned inward, as I have done with every sorrow in my life, and put on my brave face, which is VERY brave and quite stoic, and gone on, never allowing my own grief to reach the surface. I would have intellectualized, and stayed safe within the boundaries of my bubble. Instead, because of your post, I wept as I have not since I was a child. Every sorrow in my life was grieved for, and I am a better person because of it. Please, Cheryl, do not let anything remove you from us. We need your voice. And I, too, love snakes!

I celebrate each of you warrior souls. May the road rise up to meet you, and the wind be always at your back, and may you find love when you look around you.

Safe trips to all runners today, and wings on their heels.

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, with much love -

    - Jean

Great news, if accurate, that the six reps mentioned by C Jaffe have re-upped their co-sponsorship of H.R. 503!

There are still more than FOUR DOZEN House members who co-sponsored last session, who have yet to file their paperwork -- plus a dozen or so Senators. I am really hoping that we can get them ALL back.

Meanwhile, congratulations to the FOB who seem to have gotten Abercrombie, Bartlett, Michaud, Eshoo, Fattah, and Diaz-Balert back on board! We'll look for their names to be added to the official list in the coming week.

###Jean Nolan...what a beautiful post. You said so eloquently what I was thinking. And Linnie, and Ann and all of the other warriors, you words and hearts are the reason I can go on in this effort. The understanding I find here I can't find anywhere else. People around me are tired of hearing about another hurting animal from me...as Jean has said, they have built a wall around themselves and will not let the hurt in. So thank you all. It is only together that we can keep going.

###Cheryl Jones, I didn't find this site until a couple of days after Barbaro passed on, while trying to find solace somewhere. Since that time, you have inspired me, informed me, and kept me steady when the board seemed to turn a little crazy....and always in a loving, respectful manner. I hope you know how valued you are and how much we need you.

I have seen your post here several times now and, apparently, no one has responded to you, so I will take this opportunity to do so now ...

To my knowledge, there is no available tape, DVD, etc. of this race except what is available to view via the internet. There are many 'avenues' on the web where you can watch Barbaro's Derby Race. Unfortunately, because I have dialup, I have not yet seen a replay of that race or any of Barbaro's races, for that matter, so I understand your desire as it is mine as well.

Having said all of this, the only other thing I can suggest is that you browse ebay to see if anyone is offering it. I do not approve or condone of anything being taken surreptitiously, but if it's out there for sale on ebay and you want to pay the price for it, then that is your choice.

I don't think that anyone else here has anything more to say about it, but their comments are more than welcome.

Thank-You for your beautiful post. You know there was someone on this board on the 29th (forgive me for not remembering) that said one thing to me that was the thing that got me through that day. I was blaming God for Barbaro's death. Man was I mad. I emailed Sharon and everyone and was so mad that I thought God had totally turned on all of us by taking Barbaro but as one person posted, "maybe it was Barbaro's prayers that God answered", not exactly like that but almost. That really really hit me. Your right.

So much has been accomplished because of Barbaro. That horrible day I could not for the life of me understand why. Why Barbaro. But now as I look back and I see all the "good" that has come out of this, I understand. I told God I was sorry and next time, I will "try" not to question his motives. We all know they are good.

Your post is wonderful and it says it all. The 7th race that Barbaro is "still" running he WILL WIN with all of our help. He never lost that race. We thought he did then, but he is winning a race that makes the Triple Crown look like pebble on the beach. He is winning the race that NO other horse has EVER won! The race for all of the horses. That in my book is something that words simply cannnot express.

    Cheers

Jean Nolan, Linda M in TX and everyone ...

It's the strength of ALL of us that emboldens us to go on ... I am just one spoke in a very large wheel called TWR and the 'home' that Alex has given us here. Without Alex, we would be Barbaro orphans looking for some warmth, compassion, understanding and love but not really finding it. Right now for all of us, "Home is a Wounded Heart", Alex and TWR are the "Home" and the hub of the wheel ...we are the spokes that keep the hub and wheel moving, churning and turning.

Each spoke is as important and necessary as the one that precedes it and the one that follows it ... they 'depend' on each other for safety and strength. All of us 'spokes' are virtually meaningless if left to stand alone, but together we make the hub important to the wheel itself.

Each and every one of us is a sparkling facet in a multi-faceted diamond ... we all "shine with our own kind of light" and we are all necessary, unique and valuable to the cause as a whole, and to our individual passions.

To quote a wonderful lyric from a Neil Diamond song that is one of my favorites ... "Yes I Will"

    "Plainly it's a circle
one that ends and then begins,
    and begins again.

    Yes I will
    'deed I will.
    If I may
    If I might
    If I can ..."

    ###############

    Cheryl Jones ...

    Yes YOU can
    'deed YOU will

Don't let the naysayers bring you down ... not everyone is going to like what you say or agree with it, and yes, some may criticize you from time to time ... it's just everyone expressing their strong opinions and each is entitled to do that, whether we like it or not, and whether we appreciate it or not. As they say in France, Cheryl ... "Cie la Vie" ...or as Frank Ol' Blue Eyes Sinatra sings ... "That's Life!!" Don't let anyone ever get you down, Cheryl ... just keep being you!!

Thank you so much. It was one of the hardest things for me to get through during filming without breaking down. I just focused on how much Barbaro, the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, Edgar, Alex and everyone else who went on this journey means to me. And the causes we can now work on. When we were done, I cried so hard. Thank goodness Debra had the tissues... I wanted so much to express my deep feelings without losing it emotionally and not saying what I felt.

Darling Molasses--I am devastated. HIs passing was the best possible given the circumstances he had faced for so long. God bless the wonderful, loving people at Shiloh. I sent him so much Reiki last night, and in the middle of the night also. I guess by then he had already transitioned. When sending the Reiki, I was hopeful, because things actually seemed to be much better--and now, reading the news, I guess that he was already healing in Heaven.

I received a letter today from one of the veterinary practices that I faxed the Vet form and cover letter on Thursday. In contrast to the kind vet who treats cats, the letter informed me that the vets are "keenly aware" of the issues I raised, but, "as you noted, we are not a large animal practice"...so I gather they didn't sign, and were blowing me off, while realizing that I had used their services, and might need to again in the future. Disappointing.

Today I discovered a "banking discrepancy" that apparently occurred last Saturday. I had checked activity last Saturday, but it must have been before this item cleared. Naturally the phone numbers I was to call all said, "after hours". I left a couple of messages; and am not comfortable. There should be some sort of 24 hour provision for security issues; not just some recording and message system. If anyone has a spare moment to say a brief prayer for me in this regard, it would be appreciated. I don't know what to expect.

Thank God for the new photos of Ernie, and for his being so much better. He looks beautiful; just adorable, and the little cap is a jaunty touch. Ernie's recovery is indeed a bright, hopeful, and wonderful thing--something good has happened afterall.

    Hello to my Fellow FsOB:)

The following is my 'contribution' for St. Patrick's Day....it has always been my favorite..

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon you face, and rains

    fall soft upon your fields.

    And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to alllllll of you:)

    **IS THERE ANOTHER RAINBOW?

Oh, the snow has given way to sunshine, peeking through my window, MORNING GLORY you brighten up this day....

What fortunes lay ahead, we don't know as we venture outside to gain the sweet scent of Spring air not far away...

And looking up towards the sky, I wonder what my
Big B is doing just now? Is there a green Meadow at your feet? Maybe an apple orchard, and a generous apple tree shares with you a succulent daytime snack?

Oh, but let's not forget, YOU think of US too now...you see us in our journeys, wondering what paths we'll follow today.

You recall old friends, stablemates, thoroughbreds and humans alike.....do you miss them too? Or do you accompany them along their own respective paths, yielding them guidance from above, bringing them peace and protection.....

yes, you know it's so true, the memory is always GREEN....even for us Leprechauns on Our Special Day.....

And Michael and Peter, and Chelokee....their work, you recall so well times well spent.....to say 'thank you' for a gift, you speak it through the memory of your own eyes.....

Barbaro, so savvy, such grace, protect and guide us now....bring humility to their cause, for triumphs await them, as triumphs await all of us..

in this Life, this Human Glory, which is YOU,

    Sweet Prince....Dearest Barbaro.

Ann,Jean,Linnie,Pam....Thank you for your kind & thoughtful words. Most of the time people make fun of me, they say I have a soft heart, that I am too emotionally attached to animals, that its because I can't have kids that I love them so much. I could go on. Yesterday was another very sad day, each time it seems to be harder to deal with & take longer to function again.

Your words brought on tears again, but you made me feel proud. Proud to be a "softie". Bless you & thank you again.

    Dear FOB Frens:
    #
Chery Jones--please don't leave! B. wouldn't want you to go. You are special, and it wouldn't seem right if you weren't here!

    #
Lynne Browne--LOVE that Irish Blessing, and thanks so much for posting it...also thanks for the good wishes re: banking thing..more on that in a minute.

    #
Susan O--Life is always so much more "difficult" for the tender hearted and sincere. Those who feel deeply feel more pain, and feel it more sharply. Yet, I believe that God has special joys for someone such as yourself. The darks seem darker, but the brights seem brighter. The sorrows seem less surmountable, but the joys seem so much more joyous. Be very kind to yourself..as kind as you would be to others; and I believe there would be no greater kindness than that.

    #
Jean Nolan--thank you so much for your kind words about the banking thing, and in general. You are always so knowledgeable, and so kind to others. Happy St. Paddy's to ye, and may your Irish Eyes sparkle today.

    #
Corrine, thank you. Your posts are always selfless and concerned. All the right instincts shine through.

    #####
RE: the Banking Thing: I am a fool. I forgot a transaction I made last Saturday...and the telephone banking reconciliation service stated it in different terms than it used to, so it threw me for a loop. You know the "Easy Button" on those office supply store commercials? Well, I have no Easy Button...all my buttons lead straight to "Panic Button." A few years ago, there were several identity theft attempts on me right close together--so, other people would take it in stride, and be glad that nothing catastropic came of it. Me? Oh, well, I can make a catastrophe out of my worst fears. I jumped to a conclusion. My dear husband (God sent him to me to keep me from going completely "Away With the Budgies"--Alex will know what that means). He remembers more about what I do than I do--he figured it out! I called the automated system again, and sure enough. The Post Menopausal Memory had lapsed again, leading to jumping with both feet on the Panic Button.

Sorry to have asked for prayers...save those prayers for the dear Horses--they need them; I just need ginseng and the glass of Red Wine I am sipping while I look out at bright blue skies, white, white snow, and birds feeding at our feeders. God, I am so lucky--and so thankful for everything, and for my beautiful FOB family. I love you!

    Cheryl,
I'm so sorry that anyone sent you criticizing emails over your advice to me about my kitty Mason. First of all, your advice was to me, not anyone else, so it really shouldn't have been an issue for others. Secondly, everything you said was absolutely correct and I appreciated every word. I knew in my heart that something was not quite right with Mason, but there was a part of me that was in denial because the thought of anything bad happening to him was just too much for me to bear. It was your advice that got me off my rear end and to the vet. Well, I'm glad I did. He has developed more bladder stones and there are also several in his urethra. He's not totally obstructed, but the vet is going to go ahead and perform a perineal urethrostomy on Mason first thing Monday morning. So Mister Mason is going to become Miss Mason, after all. So to you Cheryl, thank you! (And everyone else for their kind words, thoughts and prayers for my baby boy.) Again, I'm so sorry that you received criticism over your advice about my kitty. You were NOT wrong!

###Linnie, Susan E. and Lorraine-You also had some very nice words for my Mason last night, but I didn't read them until after the board had closed for the evening. Thank you so much. It means a lot to me. (By the way, Lorraine, I'm so happy to hear that Squirt is doing all right. I remember posting to you about him last summer and I've been lighting a candle for him every day since, hoping that he was all right...I'm SO happy that he is!)

Happy St. Patrick's Day Alex and FOBs!

    #
Linnie: thanks for reposting Harriette's beautiful poem. And thank you for what you wrote, also. Thank you for your steady flame. I loved Secretariat, too, and love him still. I can still see him, that big chest, those long legs that didn't seem to touch the ground, that mane and tail flying, lengths ahead of the pack. I am not a racing fan, but when he ran, I watched, and when he ran, I cried at his sheer beauty. Barbaro was his heir apparent. I never saw him race; only film clips of the Derby. But when I saw that, I cried...may they both run full out, run for the joy of it; run in races with the wind, run, run, run in the sun and through fields of wildflowers.

Annie from Texas--Wheeling Girl--I have felt the same way..many, many, many times. But "keep coming back; it works when you work it" to borrow a phrase from a support group. It's not how many times you withdraw; it's how you promote your own healing, and how and why you venture back. You're still in the fray--Spritual Warriors are not impervious; they just throw themselves into the breach for the love of others.

Where did you go to school, Annie? I went to Edgington Lane (defunct now); Woodsdale (don't know what now); Triadelphia High School (now middle school, or jr. high, or something); and West Liberty State College. Also WVU for a while, but no-grad there.

I know GC&P road, alright, I commuted via "the Cow Path to Culture" every day.

    ### nancy r. lewis - You are very kind. I'm a helpless victim of my Irish heritage, which means I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to talk! Seriously, I appreciate your compliment more than I can say, and I thank you.

    ### Sandie - I'm so glad to read that Mason is going to have the surgery. It worked a miracle in 1975 for one of our cats, who had been in dreadful pain with the same condition. He had the surgery and went on to live a comfortable and happy life for many years. Best of luck to you and Mr. Mason. You'll both be in our thoughts.

For St. Paddy's Day: may I humbly suggest Lay's sunflower oil DILL PICKLE flavored potato chips! Well, you figure dill pickles are green. Ohhhh, what a flavor--and when you open the bag, the aroma is transporting. So here I sit, getting "tiddled as an owl" on "Rouge Bicyclette" wine, and dipping into the dill pickle chips whilst I catch up on the thoughts and doings of the most full hearted people I can think of. My cat, Lulu, is sleeping in the 37 year old armchair that every cat we have ever shared our home with has taken over. Her ears are up, though she sleeps...waiting to hear the sound of DINNER!

I love how all of us heal each other while we try our individual bests to fight the good fights. I think it's a testament to the goodness of heart of the FOB's that so many find it anguishing, punishing, and almost unbearable to read about and see the horrors inflicted on the helpless and innocent; and yet...after absorbing and processing, there is an unfailing effort to fight on. I keep seeing the "Three Monkeys": See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil...and I interpret that a different way now than I did when I was younger. When I was younger, I took that as an admonition to refrain from negative actions. Now, I see it as also a form of denial and of shrinking from truth and reality...we want so much to shrink, but we can't. And that is the product of individual conscience. Bravery is not the absence of fear; it is the overcoming of fear by doing what you fear while fearing it. The rescuers are the truest of Heroes; the purest of saviours; the most courageous of the brave.

"They also serve who only stand and wait"...who wait for the call; who wait for the cue; who wait for the orders and the direction to act. Some of our family direct, some of our family follow the directions..none is lesser; all is vital. Where one stops and lies down to rest, another will step foreward and carry on. And so it goes: a living fabric, a cooperative of shared love and anguish, a family of mankind dedicated to the greater good, with no expectation of reward other than the accomplishment of that good. Altruism.

Susan E, Nancy in CT, Jean, & All,

Thanks so much for 'inviting' me back, I've never posted much but read here a lot and feel very much an FOB and part of this family.

I love the way this board cycles. Sometimes it's on fire because we've had great news from HSUS, or new sponsors have signed on to the anti-slaughter bills, or Pamela is feeling particularly wacky.

Some days members of this family are in trouble and we join hands and rally 'round them with loving support.

Sometimes, like today, we're feeling introspective but willing to share anyway. That helps us all.

It's been a helluva ride since May 20. When we lost the light of our lives on January 29, things got a whole lot harder, and many of us are struggling. Heart-breakers like Fitch and Molasses add to our pain.

The irony of all this seems to be that our redemption is mostly to be found in horses: ending slaughter, rescuing an individual horse from a slaughter truck or various cruelties. Holding on to Navidad's foal Rain at Shiloh, and little Ernie at Horsefeathers. We can't unlearn what we already know, and putting our heads in the sand doesn't seem to be our style.

On March 3, the dear little mare I sponsored at my local rescue had to be euthanized and I was heart-broken. This past Tuesday I was able to adopt a beautiful Thoroughbred from the same rescue, although I don't have nearly enough experience. But it will work out because I'll have excellent help. And I'm going to be all right.

I honestly don't know what it is about horses that saves us. But when you lay your hand on their warm flesh, you'll know what I mean.

Please, any of you who haven't done so, try to find a horse to touch. Go to your local rescue or horse facility, stop beside a pasture with a carrot in your hand when you drive out to the country. I promise it will ease your mind and give you the stength to carry on.

    Love to all,

    #
Ann from Maryland--gald your new computer allows you to communicate as you wish!

Some of our "herd"--The Bambi Family are here now, eating the "Critter Crunch" and the birdseed that we put out for birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and the Bambis. They are so much like horse, the Bambis, though they are more closely related to cows. They hear me typing, and are looking in the windows, first fleeing the feeding area; and now inching closer. Lulu the cat has left her armchair, and is sitting under a window, looking at the Mourning Doves in the feeder closest to the house. There have always been Mourning Doves, since my husband and I were married. They appeared in the gutters of the old farmhouse in Lackawanna County, right by the bedroom window when we first married in July 1970. He said that before I came to the house, there were no Mourning Doves. At every house we have lived in, there have been Mourning Doves since. And deer, when we have not been in more urbanized areas. We don't care what bushes they eat; we don't care what flowers they eat...although my husband dearly would love to have poppies bloom before being ingested. Their coats are still somewhat winter greay, though the shedding has begun. The burnished golden red of Summer will be clothing them soon. Mid March musings; past mid life ramblings and reflections on a life partly well spent; partly foolishly...yet now I am glad for the foolishness too, and regrets seem to have dissipated, thank God. What would we be without our full hearted follies, our misspent escapades, and the actions of our half formed intellects?

Hi, Ellie! My Gosh, "Little Washington" Yes, that is what we all called it, and some still do! I grew up in Wheeling, and now I live in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh. Ross, to be exact.
So, you are in Tucson! Not the hottest, sunniest part of Arizona, is it? You didn't get that "fever" that newcomers to Tucson get, did you?

I have a good Wheeling friend who now lives in Phoenix, and she loves the heat and the sun. She has three (maybe four now) donkeys, and a peacock and peahen, and wild crested chickens. Sounds like Eden, doesn't it?

Where, exactly do you hail from? West Alec? Or Little Washington, now the proud home of the semi-pro baseball team the Washington Wild Things?

    Good to hear from you!!

    Hi, Barbaro Nation.

Just back from my niece's wedding shower....lovely day!

Such beautiful posts today. Today demonstrates how we can just talk to one another, as well as do great work together. Today demonstrates how we can have different viewpoints, but still enjoy one another and this unique community we've built and nurtured all these months.

I hope we have many, many more such days together!

SueM......thanks for responding to my inquiry. I was born and raised in Washington. My brother still lives there, about 1/2 mile west of the Wild Things ball park. I have been in Az since 1970. I think you are referring to Valley Fever and no I have never had it. I live on 10 acres of mostly desert area about 15miles south of Tucson towards the Mexican border.

We have currently 6 dogs, but no horses. I would love to have a few, but am getting too old to properly take care of them. We have a rescue
about 10 miles from me and I have been thinking about volunteering some there so I can get some of the joy that horses would bring.

We have our fair share of rabbits and ground squirrils (sp). A few rattlesnakes from time to time, but never been bitten...Thank God.

I am hoping to get home this summer. I have a friend who lives in Coraopolis. Is that near you?

Winter is back again for you rite? Tucson is hot but not as bad as Phoenix or Lake Havesu or Bullhead City.

Have a good nite and hopefully you will get to watch the races on ESPN in about 10 min.

    Bye Ellie Az

I am here. Just had to take a break for a family emergency.
Doesn't look as though my sister is going to make it. The hospital has been great to do all they can for her, but said last night " I know you all have strong beliefs(In God & prayer) But she is not going to leave here, with all four major organs gone"( Heart, lungs, kidneys & liver)
I don't know when the decision to disconnect life support will be. Right now I just have a lot going on at home. I have not left you and never will. I have a lot of catching up to do.
I will be posting my thank you to all who posted to me. Right now I just can't think straight.
Love to you all and will be back when I'm able.
    Love,
    Verna

Hello again, Ellie. So good to hear from you! If you have never been bitten by the rattlesnakes, they must recognize you as good people. My ex-forester husband told me they strike when they are afraid.

Oh, yes, winter is back for us--three to four inches of snow, and temps back down to the 20's, after having a couple of days in the high 60's. Mother Nature has gone Schizophrenic on us.

"Corrie" is not that far from us: we had a dear relative who lived there. It's a nice community.

You know, your thoughts about horse ownership should be adopted by more people: you know what you can handle, and what you can't. Sounds like by volunteering, you can do more for more horses than you could by taking on one...I'll bet you could offer a lot of love and support to some very deserving animals.

I'm so glad to converse with you, Ellie...that's a great name. I had a friend named Ellie from Sligo, near Eighty-Four, but unfortunately I lost touch with her. She's an artist and now an art teacher. Very much an animal person, so it must go with the name!

    Good night and God Bless!

Pam - (and, of course, Debra!) - That was a wonderful piece. Truly amazing. And you did such a terrific job, Pam, articulating what so many of us feel. Thank you for representing with such clarity and heart.
    ###
Sue M - You said something quite profound, I think. "What would we be without our full hearted follies, our misspent escapades, and the actions of our half formed intellects?" There is, appropriately enough today, an Irish song that speaks of that feeling, "and the merry-hearted boys make the finest old men." And before that, the comment about courage lying in overcoming fear, not lacking fear. My mom used to say that only an idiot lacked fear, but a hero overcame it. Thank you for identifying the introspective and conversational aspect of today's board, and for making us all your companions as you look about your home.
    ###
Mirth - I am so sorry to learn of the loss of your mare. If it was posted previously, I missed it - or, (here we go with PMML!), had forgotten. In any case, I send you every warm thought. Bless you for choosing to fill the hole in your heart with another needy beastie. You are one of the reasons I'm proud to be here.

Mr. Brown - You are so patient with us as we do the girl thing, and talk about our feelings! Thank you.

    To Everyone ...

Oh my, you've really brought me to tears yet again ... I went out for a few hours and came back to read quickly before I'm off to the races with ESPN in a few minutes.

What beautiful words of support and thanks for my posts here ... I am so humbled because I only write what's in my heart and from what I have learned over the years. But your kindness is overwhelming and I graciously accept it with much humility.

I agree with Nancy in CT ... there are too many awesome posts here today to try to single each one out, lest I forget ... Nancy ... you are a model diplomat, and I 'tip' my Barbaro hat to you. You are fierce in your resolve, intensity and passion for animals ... I understand how you feel and think ...
    ##################

Ken Z ... Your poetic talents come straight from your heart and soul ... so touching, so warm, so beautifully scripted ... thank you so much for sharing such a personal part of yourself with all of us.
    ###################

OK, here's one subject where I have no humility whatsoever and a couple of you have mentioned Secretariat here so this gives me a big open door to walk through when I talk about him.

I loved him so then and I love him so still. No other horse before or since Secretariat - UNTIL BARBARO- could make me cry uncontrollably. Not for his death, which, of course, I bawled my eyes out for days, but for his gargantuan heart and majestic stride when he ran. Just watching him run in all of his races makes me cry like a baby, over and over and over and over. I don't know what it is, but I just watch him run, and I cry.

The Belmont Stakes is the quintessential horse race of "Poetry in Motion" I have ever seen, and that Bob Coglianese photo of him leading the field by 31 lengths and Ronnie Turcotte just turning around as if in disbelief is beyond description. Perhaps the greatest sports photograph ever taken!!!

31 Lengths and still pulling away ... still pulling away .... each furlong was fastest than the preceding one and if the race was 2 miles long, he would have caught up with his running mates for the SECOND TIME!!

He had heart, he had soul, he had spirit, he had elegance, he had determination, he believe in himself, he never gave up, he never looked back. He was a miracle!!

And 33 years later, another 'heir apparent' stepped up to the plate with the very same attributes ... and his name was BARBARO!! And he did it all in his very short earthly life ... he talked the talk and walked the walk and he was destined to follow in Big Red's footsteps ... there is no doubt about that for me at all ...

And now, he and Big Red are united in a much more important race ... I have no doubt that they are the closest of buddies up there in Equine Heaven ... soul mates for sure. Mrs. Jackson said it perfectly ... "he's up there running around with Secretariat."

And so he is ... and so they are ... and my heart is full and I am blessed to have 'known' them both in my lifetime.

Please let's not forget Big Red's Birthday on March 30th ... 37 years old up there in Heaven ... I hope we all pay a very special tribute to him on his big day!!

Oh, VERNA--I am so sorry for the pain and anguish you must be feeling. "Let Go and Let God" is the phrase that comes to mind, and it seems that this is where you are right now.
Strong beliefs in God and prayer don't mean that our prayers are answered in accordance with what our frail and limited human perceptions are: God is in charge, and His ways are not always understandable to us. Our prayers for others, despite what we say we want, inevitably become a request for what God wills for the best interest of the individual involved. I pray for comfort for you, and your family, and I pray for peace and God's Grace for your sister.
I am so sorry that you and your family have had to go through this. God be with you , and bless you , and give you all comfort and peace. His ways are mysterious, because we are finite: He is not.
    Love to you,

Just to recap Jim's results quickly the Choctaw Blue Ribbon Derby Finals Jim rode Strawfly Sister in the G-III stake. He finished 3rd!! Way better than he'd figured on. He said they even had the boys scared till the last 50 yds. or so. He was very impressed with this filly.

The Choctaw Blue Ribbon Futurity Finals were going well till Illegal Te hit a soft spot in the track (Jim said it felt more like a pothole) about 100 yds. from the wire. Jim said that's what cost him the race!! He only got beat a neck and finishing 2nd. Illegal Te pulled up good and Jim was concerned when he'd hit that spot in the track. All in all Jim was very pleased with both his mounts and said they'd given him all they had to give, and he couldn't ever expect more than their best effort. The owners were tickled with Jim's efforts and thanked him for taking care of Illegal Te after he'd taken that very bad step as they'd noticed it in the race. They really appreciated that Jim didn't push him hard for the win after that to get the money as they'd rather have the horse sound. And 2nd money isn't bad anyway. Another impressive owner. Wonders never cease on this board huh? They came back safe and that's what counts most!! They've all earned their oats this day!!

    Smile,

    Sue M
This will be my last post, as the board is on such a positive note today and I don't want to take away from that.
My prayer for her is for her to get what it is she wants.
She told my brother-in-law just days before this happened that she only wanted to be on life support if it would help her. If not, she did not want to live "that way". She had prayed two weeks ago and said Father if you are done here with me on earth please take me, otherwise, reveal to me your need for me to be here. She had lost the use of her legs about a month ago after a 20 year battle with over 20 back surgeries.
So, I pray for her to be at peace, here on earth or with our Father. I don't like to see her this way. Thank you all and I will mention each and everyone of you when I can, for being here for me.
Now, please go on back to the beautiful posts and lift your spirits as high as you dare go. Each and everyone of you are a blessing and so deserve this day to be happy and upbeat.
I do love you all. Have a beautiful day/evening/night.
    ###
Alex. I can't even begin to express my thanks to you for bringing us all together. Without you where would we be. You are a true gentleman and friend to us all.

WOW!! What a race Curlin ran in the Rebel Stakes in only his second start!!! I didn't realize that horses can run in such high stakes races after their maiden race, but I guess it's all up to the owners, trainers, etc. I thought they had to move up through the ranks more.

And Curlin wore #8. I can't believe how many winning horses wear #8 ... they just showed a bunch of races that I can't remember but the majority of the winners wore #8.
    ##############3

VERY CLOSE race at Tampa Bay with Street Sense and Any Given Saturday!!! Exciting for us, but very dicey for the owners/trainers, etc.

Verna--there is no negativity in speaking feelings from the heart; there is no "bringing down" by speaking of love and feelings of loss. Everyone is here for you; speak what you feel, and say what you want: your sister is a wise woman; she said what she wanted, and spoke her truth. She has given her family her wishes. What a strong, wonderful woman. And so are you.

    Love to you,

    *******************************************
There have been a lot of tough times and emotional strains these past two months and I notice fewer and fewer posting. I know some regulars have said they need to take a break and regroup. I hope that that is the case with most people whom I don't see here anymore, and that they are not gone permanently....so much work to be done.

Regulars, if you're out there just lurking, could you drop us a line and let us know you're there?

Posted by: Susan E. at March 17, 2007 4:46 PM

    *********************************************

    To ALL the "New Regulars":
I'm afraid that the only "regulars" who are welcome back are the ones who "go along to get along". I hope I am wrong about that, but....

This venue seems to be going in a direction that will ultimately end with a small group of people who agree with each other, along with a few delusional folks, and some people whose posts are largely incoherent.

What a shame...this used to be something other than a rolling "billboard" of the same posts over and over and over again. They ARE currently STILL interspersed with genuinely INTERESTING, INFORMATIVE posts, but sooooo many, tooooo many "Oh you are wonderful!", "No, you're the wonderful one!", By the way, let me tell you this wonderful thing I did and how much money I gave to thus and such."...

I know this opinion won't be popular, but when a true "regular" like Susan E. notices and voices the FACT than there are "fewer and fewer (people) posting", maybe there is something wrong here.

Now, of course, Cheryl Jones would be welcome no matter where she goes - I'm not sure if I know a finer person. No tongue-in-cheek here, I am completely serious. If you drive HER away, then there really is something SERIOUSLY wrong here. And you will have lost a true treasure.

Think about all of the names that are missing. If you sat down and listed them all on a piece of paper, I think you'd be startled.

Oh, and you needn't "inform" me that I am NOT welcome back; I don't need any more of the kind of "informing" I got before my departure.

But, you might want to think about just what kind of venue you want this to be - and work toward that goal, because if people keep leaving, who will be left to do the work?

    Sincerely,
    Glenda Jo O'Brien

Sue M. - I am so glad your "banking" scare is over. It is so coincidental that this morning I too was frantically trying to determine where a large transaction occurred, and for what, last Friday. Did someone have my banking info, did I sign a debit card slip that was incorrect, was there a fraudulent transaction? And as I ripped through all of the receipts I have carelessly spread around my so-called office (really just a paper repository designed to hide the filing from sight for a year or so) I realized what the transaction was and BREATHED. Perhaps a result of my "half formed intellect", which I think is designed to ensure that I don't take myself too seriously, as I can do the most comical things without trying!!

Your posts have been beautiful and healing today, as have so many others. Thank you.

Linnie, thanks for reminding me so frequently of Secretariat. He was the first racehorse I fell in love with...I watched the tape of the Belmont over and over...I've yet to see anything that compares. Then Ruffian was the last racehorse I fell in love with...when she died I lost a piece of my heart and couldn't watch races anymore...until Barbaro, the beautiful Barbaro, and I lost my heart again. I will be remembering Barbaro, Secretariat and Pfacelli next week with a contribution as I will be traveling on the 29th (and my company matches so we'll get a double triple :-)) Thanks so much for keeping the laminitis fund front and center for us.

Could an animal legal advocacy group such as ALDF or In Defense of Animals become involved to bring criminal charges against the owners of slaughter-bound horses who let these horses literally starve to death? This is animal cruelty. I would like to see legal justice done for these poor horses.

Verna~ I am so very sorry about your sister. My thoughts & prayers go out to you & your family.

It was if we all exhaled in unison and what a marvelous feeling it is!! I can't wait to meet so many of you at DelPark for the Birthday Party of the Century for the Horse of the Century.. our Barbaro. I know he will be all around us & giving each & every one of us a nip & a nicker and nodding his approval. Sweet dreams, all.

My sweet colt~ we're coming up on 7 weeks since you went to Equine Heaven. The tears still flow freely & I have yet to bring myself to read the special edition of Bloodhorse with your beautiful face on the cover. I miss you, Barbaro, yet I feel you in my heart as you give me the courage to fight for the health, lives & rights of your fellow horses. Give my love to my first horse love, Ruffian, and tell her to lend you a helping hand in winning the heart of Gallant Secret. I love you, precious angel, now & forever. A domani, bello cavallo....

I, too, am very concerned about the missing "frens" at the same time welcoming the newcomers. Just recently I went through all my email lists and (again, without mentioning names) was shocked and very unhappy to see how many people are no longer with us...

Thanks, everyone, for your 'reminders' about the Elite 8 ... I missed several good ones ... the ol' memory ain't what it used to be for sure!! I wish I was 18 again and feeling as I feel today about horses ... I would BE doing something in this industry ... I don't know what but I'd be there ...

Linda M in TX ... Thanks for YOUR wonderful memories, and yes, I forgot about the beautiful Ruffian ... I was watching that day ... in horror and disbelief ... watching as it all unfolded right before my eyes on television ... a piece of my heart will always be with Black Beauty, Ruffian ...

Also, please don't thank me for keeping laminitis front and center ... thank Secretariat, Barbaro, Pfacelli, et al who gave their lives so that others could live. All we can do is raise awareness for research which takes dollars, and I will never ever stop doing that!! Never!!

You are so kind with your double triple crown challenge for Secretariat, Barbaro and Pfacelli! Wow! That's a lot of money for our boys and girl!! Thank you so so so so much!!

    ####MJ,
I am with you. I watched the short clip advertising next week's interview and as soon as I saw Dr. R taking Barbaro out to graze, I lost it completely. My husband was sitting next to me and I just broke down. I could not control the tears. Reopened the oh so slow healing wound. I guess I had better have a fresh supply of Kleenex for next Sat. Oh how I miss that boy.

Posted by: Pat at March 18, 2007 1:16 AM

STOCK MARKET ALERT...buy stock in Kleenex before next Saturday's interview...I couldn't even get through the brief preview without the waterworks overflowing...and Dr. R's eyes don't have that old sparkle...we're going to have to all build each other up during the day in preparation for Jeannine's interview, that's for sure!

    Hello Barbaro,

Today is St. Patrick’s Day and I hope you had the chance to meet that lucky little Leprechaun. And, hopefully you spotted some four leaf clovers while out grazing in your pastures of emerald green grass.

People like to wear green shirts, ties or jewelry on this day, each year. You’re not the type to wear too much green are you Honey, other than your sage green blanket? You the type who likes to EAT green!

So, are you ready for your blanket? We'll pull it up high and keep the cooler air away from you.

Tonight, dream sweet dreams of all of your loved ones on Earth and your Dream Angel friends in Hevvin (thank you Auntie Cheryl Jones!)It seems that the mischievous one has rounded up that Leprechaun and wants to introduce you...

Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days.

Sleep well Barbaro. Yes, the "green" will go away tomorrow... Good night Honey. Sweet dreams...I love you so much. XXOOxxo

    #####

    Hello Hope,

Have you gotten the feel for this St. Patrick's Day thing? How lucky do you feel tonight?

How about lucky enough to know that sooo many people love you and can't wait for your filly to be born? Lucky and loved enough to have a tummy full of treats before going to bed each night?

You're very lucky, blessed, loved, cherished and more Hope. Much more...

Let's grab your blanket and cuddle you up. Tonight you will dream sweet dreams and plan wonderful days with your little one.

Now close your eyes and start on those dreams, and plans, Hope. You and your filly hold so much promise and love Hope. I see wonderful things for you two...

Good night Little One. I love you very much. xxooxxo

    Hello Hawty Creek,

Today is St. Patrick's Day but I would like to extend your holiday to your race day that is possibly coming up very soon.

You need to know that the Fans want and need for you to finish your races safely. Yes, the idea is to finish as fast as you can, but the bottom line, finish safely. Okay?... Thank you Hawty.

The air is cooler where you are so we need your warmer blanket tonight. Please keep it on through the night... It's going to be pulled high on your neck to keep any nasty drafts away.

Dream sweet dream Sweetheart. Let Barbaro tickle your nose while you sleep... (he seems to get a kick out of that!)

You are loved Hawty. Good night. xxoox

    Good night Hawty. Stay healthy

    OH LAURIE H ...

WHAT A FITTING TRIBUTE TO BARBARO, HOPE AND HAWTY TONIGHT ...

I truly believe that St. Patrick's Day brings out the best of everyone ... maybe it's the awe of the 'real' St. Patrick, or just maybe it's the green beer or corned beef and cabbage. Whatever it is, today was a day of cameraderie, hope, love and friendship among all of us ... I hope it lasts forever!!

AND FOR THE ITALIANS AMONG US ...

Monday is St. Joseph's Day ... a Very Big and Important Saint's Day for Italian-American Catholics! We don't "do" corned beef and cabbage like the Irish, but we do offer:

    Roasted Leg of Lamb
    Roasted Potatoes
Pasta ... there ALWAYS must be pasta!!!
Salad with REAL olive oil and vinegar dressing
All kinds of nuts and fruits
    Torrone Candies

    And for dessert ...

    Espresso with Sambucca or Annisette

A variety of Italian pastries including:

    Sfogliatelli
    Cannoli
    Baba Au Rhum
and St. Joseph's Pastry named for him!!
    Lots of Red Wine !!!

We dance, we sing, we celebrate and we get drunk, too!! Just like the Irish ... It's the world of "I" this month ... Irish St. Patrick and Italian St. Joseph!!

    Mangiare!!!!!

I love that the commentators said all Barbaro fans will not want to miss next Saturday, and then he quickly said and who isn't a Barbaro fan!!!

You can tell Dr. R is either teary eyed or had been. He says he is proud of how they took care of Barbaro but if anyone is to blame it is him. Just seeing the videos (nothing new) of B at NBC made me cry.

Posted by: MJ at March 18, 2007 1:50 AM

May I say something at the risk of ????

I know that several people have mentioned that many former posters have left, and yes, that is very unfortunate and sad.

But ... one of the reasons that people have left is not due to the way they were treated 'here' on this site at all. They left because, there was a time, when Alex was closing down everything and gave us substantial notice to this effect. During that time, some of our 'members' started their own websites because they wanted to keep it all together, and many followed to other websites for that reason.

Please let's not blame or judge the good people here for those who have left. No one makes anyone else leave unless they choose to. There were several other websites started during the interim when we thought Alex was closing up shop, and many of those people went elsewhere. That's all there is to that.

Message boards are a strange breed ... and you must toughen and thicken your skin to survive ... you will not be liked all of the time; you will not be agreed with all of the time; you will have to grow and understand that everyone is unique and different and to lash out and lay blame is counter-productive and serves nothing positive. So, if people have left here for other sites, wish them well, be happy for them and choose for yourself where/how/when you decide to post at any of them.

Personally, I really don't see too many people 'gone' ... yes, there are a few who have left, but new people have come in also .... people come and go on message boards all the time ... I know from experience, but you cannot have a thin skin and low self-worth and a huge ego to survive this experience.

I do believe there is a whole host of reasons why some people left TWR, everything from too many religious-oriented posts to people "flaming" at one another and everything inbetween. It's true that you need a pretty thick skin to stay afloat. I am sorry that people like Mary S. have left but I know that many of these folks are doing work for the horses outside TWR and I wish them all the very best!

I mostly visit TWR to get up dates on strategy for ending slaughter and names of people to call - that is my passion at the moment. Of course, I can't forget Rosie and her enthralling and ingrossing story.

Bless all the Beasts especially our sweet horses!

    Bonnie ...

Thanks for your post, and I do agree with your viewpoint ...

Mary S left of her own accord ... she posted that her time 'here' was done for several reasons, and we accepted that as her wish. I hope that was her wish and her desire, because we cannot 'read between the lines' of what someone says; we can only go by 'what' they say and respect that as their choice for their own reasons.

Having said this, and believe me I am not a victim nor do I want to be seen as one because I will never accept that for myself .... but I was completely shunned, ignored, villified and taken to task on another message board. And I was also betrayed and exposed in a national 'tabloid'. Not me, personally, but comments that I made on this other message board that, all of a sudden, found their way into The National Enquirer. Why? I spoke the truth but others were out to get me because they felt threatened in some way. And people who feel threatened because of their own self-esteem issues will do whatever they can to villify and blame someone else and, burn them in effigy at stake. Well I was burned in effigy, theoretically speaking.

When I had had 'enough' I left ... not because anyone drove me out but because I made a conscious decision about what was right for me, and only me. I blamed no one; I castigated no one, and I judged no one. It was my time to make a choice, and I chose to leave that site because I knew that I would not be accepted any longe there. Too many egos at stake; too many insecurities in play. They wanted to take me down, and they felt that they did. But it was my choice to stay or go and I chose to go. I am not a victim; I am not a martyr ... I made a choice that was best for me, given the circumstances.

It turned out to be the best decision I ever made because I landed 'here' in the land of Barbaro and horses and I am 'home.'

ARGH I just dumped a huge email to ya'll. But maybe that's for the best. The gist:

    #######
Had a wonderful chat with Joe at TB friends. Ohmygod, they are truly amazing people. I'm becoming a Joe-blogologist....Hope Peanut made it through the night, Joe.
    #########
I almost killed this a haughty bitch at GH Outreach late in our day--who actually runs an equine management program at a local school AND TOLD ME THERE WAS NO HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THE US.You can imagine....I only hope the overdressed, idiot went home and made herself ill at the slaughter sites...but she probably did not.
I informed her ALL OF HER STUDENTS could be making a difference, making calls. I had a tough time keeping The Fist of Death in my pocket. Peter, an old, old friend who knows my temper, did amusingly step back when I told her in no uncertain terms THAT SHE WAS MISINFORMED. I am pretty sure he didn't want to get any brain matter on his new sweatshirt....
    #######
This is our Outreach weekend with my wonderful Vols and 6-8 greyhounds at The Mall of Wretched Excess. I am wearing my Barbaro cap till slaughter is over...and it does generate talk...which is good, unless of course you wind up killing the idiot you are talking to. They still send people to jail for that, right?
    ##########
stay on the Board. Alex and Tim gave us this gift. Look what we are accomplishing in Barbaro's name. Yes, his races were heaven-sent and the Derby a gift from God, but in his death, this big bay colt will rewrite history.
    ##########
Be strong. Forget about YOUSELF> IT IS ALL ABOUT THE HORSES. (and for me, the retired racing GH too.) Support each other, be kind, life is so short and precious. Verna knows that: Verna i send my comfot to you and your family...

Alex...so glad to read of your ride with Grandma this morning was 'uneventful' :)

I would GLADLY trade you some of our VERY unseasonable WARM temps to 'even things out' for us both! It was 86 at my house yesterday afternoon.....way toooooooo warm for March 17!

I am a very grateful FOB to have this website to come to every day....I was, for the most part, just reading here until January 29. My writing time was spent at UPENN Message Board for Barbaro..it was the first thing I did every morning for many months...then here to read on and off throughout the day and into my West Coast nights.

Without this comments page, I don't know how I would have heard of horses in need of rescue or prayers. I wouldn't have 'met' such wonderful people as Laurie H., Ken Z., Harriette, Skyler, Friar Tuck..so many others! I wouldn't have known about the books! I learned I must order Kentucky Derby 132 on this page, from so many of you discussing it...or to pre-order from Amazon, the books (three) about our Barbaro...that was in December those were being discussed. I would never have learned about Nurse Mare Foals or Cheryl Jones' letters from bArbaro had it not been for this website, I am SURE I first learned that there IS Horse Slaughter in our country because of this website! And wouldn't have been able to help STOP it without this website!

I would never have met Joe the Horse, Scout, or Lady if it werent for this website! I wouldn't have known about Ernie:) or the others which have crossed the bridge if it weren't for this website!

I wouldn't have known about Alie & Rachel at Kennett Florist, I wouldn't have known who to call to send treat baskets whenever I was able.

I wouldn't have formed friendships via e-mail from so many parts of our country without this website.

I, like all of you, am grieving the loss of a horse I never met...but formed a bond with over a period of time...a very deep bond. I miss him terribly, every single day! Without this web site, I am quite sure my grieving process would not be progressing in such a healthy way as it is being able to read here, identify with feelings others are having...sharing my "two-bits" from time to time.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I am ONE Friend of Barbaro who is extremely grateful for this website...and though I may be considered a "newby"...I've been here all along, and hoping that it stays up and running a very long time to come! I need Alex' book suggestions, I need the "language" of 'horse people' so I can learn well, for instance....what Irons are...is there a difference between "distaff" and "mare", I am very interested in learning about these amazing creatures and the language which goes along with them. Until Barbaro, I never knew of the races which identify Kentucky Derby entrants...I never thought about how they arrive at Churchill Downs!
Watching ESPN yesterday, because of Barbaro..., I actually recognized trainers names...and some names of horses!

I didn't mean for this to turn into a 'novel', I started out by just commenting to Alex re: weather and I guess allllll of the above has been 'lurking' in my heart! I just wanted to say how VERY glad I am this site is here and I want it to STAY:)

    Everyone have a WONDERFUL Sunday!

    Morning All:

Sue M. Pittsburgh - I lived in Pittsburgh about seven years - Greentree - Upper St. Clair - Monroeville - Natrona Heights. My husband is still an old Steelers fan. Pittsburgh is a nice city - enjoyed going to the THree Rivers Arts Festival every year and the look out on Mt. Washington. Haven't been back in many years.

Many wonderful thoughts and messages here today.
We all get feeling rather down and weary, I know- been there; I then think about Barbaro and his eight months of struggle - he soldiered on - and in turn gave us more time to be together. If he had given up; maybe our time with him would have been over much sooner.

I wish you all a good day and brighter tomorrows.

ALEX - just trying to catch up - now, what's this about you being talked into being "auctioned off for the Relay for Life" at the Whip? What's this all about? Tell, Tell!!! (See Alex Update 1614, quoting Rachel from Kennett Florist.)

    ###########
One more feelgood story to share before I try to catch up on yesterday's TWR stuff. I posted this at the Forum, under Horse Rescue issues, the thread is called, upd8 - gentling of former bronc Bobo.

Another heartwarming rescue story. Came across an update on Bobo, the rescued rodeo bronco who was justifiably afraid of people when he arrived at Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue (home base of poor little Fitch). In his former life he never knew a kind human touch and had been "handled" with cattle prods.

Great info for training frightened horses who never had any positive experiences with people, complete with great pics.

    http://www.pthr.org/bobosstory/index.php

This story goes to show that even the most unsocialized and justifiably frightened of horses can be gentled to the point where hopefully he may even wind up being adoptable. But in any event, he will be a happy horse with a forever home, forever free from the threat of slaughter, abuse or neglect.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I'm much later than usual as I was out clearing the front walkway. After our 8" of snow then heavy sleet and finally rain yesterday, it was most definitely a process and not an event!!! (Chop, chop, chop. Shovel, shovel, shovel. Repeat countless times!)

Great news from yesterday about Rep. Mike Michaud from Maine signing on as a co-sponsor again. I'd like to take credit, as I DID just contact him again last week but I don't think it was me alone. My mission this week is to determine which aide in Rep. Tom Allen's office is in charge of this issue and get them moving in the right direction.

Alex - Thank you for posting the article by Richard Zwirn. So moving. It reminds me very much of my current book - "Counrty Life Diary - Three Years in the Life of a Horse Farm" by Josh Pons. I'm only up to Derby Day of the first year but it's a fascinating read and I recommend it.

Good racing yesterday but no one I could fall in love with except maybe Cobalt Blue. We'll see.

I've been posting less, but still here in spirit even when work pulls the leash. Hoping all my friends here are feeling the breath of spring, and know that what is being done here for the horses is truly amazing. Keep up the magic, proud to know ye, Forever Friends of Barbaro!

    Happy Sunday everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful St. Patrick's Day! In my family, it is a HUGH day so this morning was spent sleeping in a bit extra. We had a large corned beef and cabbage meal that my mother prepared for all of us (we helped!) and I had my required HARP.

Today is an equally big day here. My love muffin Joe goes home. Should be interesting and I'm leaving soon so I can be with him. For those of you who don't know, Joe is my horse and he has been at a farm (horsey camp) due to flooding in his area a few weeks ago. He stayed there after the initial threat had passed due to some additional concerns (ice jams....Joe calls them ice yams), on the river nearby. All appears to be well so today is the day!

I'll write later tonight when we get home. Everyone, make it a glorious day, a memorable day!
Find joy in the littlest things possible, look for it always.

#Alex this is a thought that came to me one day. I think that all Fans of Barbaro should know thisas well. If things start to get weird on this board, it could very well be pro-slaughter people trying to get this board shut down. The reason that I bring this up is because things have been going very well. If stuff starts going in a different direction that is something to consider. I never really looked at it that way until a very dear friend told this to me in an email. It makes a lot of sense.

Sooooooooooooooo I pray that things keep going well and everyone gets along as we all have but if by some chance a troll gets in here think of it that way. Nothing more than a pro-slaughter person would want to cause trouble in an aniti-slaughter website...... :-)

Everyone have a relaxing day. Tomorrow it is back to work on those political people.

    Cheers

Thank you for posting Richard Swim's story. I certainly felt he pain, as if I were standing there beside him and his family. I guess we have to go through the terribly sad times to appreciate the terribly good times, but I sure wish there were another way...

Good afternoon, my Beloved Angel Boys! I've been talking about you both nonstop this long family weekend.

Good afternoon, Barbaro Nation! Spring is literally around the corner, that nasty snow will leave soon, and hope and promise is in the air. It is a time of rebirth for everything good.

Safe trip home today, Joe! I told my parents all about you the other day and how Skyler rescued you. So glad to hear you will be in your own stall tonight. The Platte is still running very, very high at the Ashland-Gretna area (I have never seen so much water in it, it usually looks like puddles connected by sandbars!) but the snow is gone! So grab your mom's shirt and enjoy the ride. You're going home.

And we're going to keep working so that someday soon, any horse in this country who steps into a trailer or a truck is going home.

I take it you live in District 19 in NY as you mention Congressman Hall. Funny thing - John and I have a history dating back to the 60's (nothing romantic). He played and I worked at the Cafe Wha - he was the guy you could count on no matter what. When I took too many "happy" pills, he was always there to take care of me. After I left New York, we lost touch, but occasionally I would hear a song of his on the radio.

I only recently became aware that he is now a congressman (saw him on tv). What a major coup for NY!!

He is very Pro-Environment (listen to his song Power) and I think he would be a wonderful advocate for anti-slaughter. That is, if you guys get him going on it.

Getting him Darryl and Michelle's pamphlet would be a good thing as I am sure he is hearing from the pro-slaughter people regularly.

I tried to e-mail him but because I don't live there it wouldn't send.

Let me know if there is anything I could do to help you guys get him on board.

    Sue M and Others,

You mentioned ALTRUISM - that definity caught my eye. There is a very interesting book "The Altruistic Personality, rescuers of Jews in Nazi Europe" written by Samuel Oliner. He is a professor here at Humboldt State Univ. (northern California). He is a survivor of the Holocaust. He and his wife, Pearl, traveled back to Europe several years ago and interviewed many of the people who helped Jews escape the Nazis, either by hiding them in their homes in remote villages or helping them get out of the country. This happened in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc. The interviews showed that some people were able to do this and some could not. I've gone to several talks he has given - he gives the example of being at the scene of an accident, some people can help and others look the other way. He is not critical of the people who cannot help but he does talk about the altruistic personality as one that cannot do nothing, cannot look the other way. A short documentary was made of these interviews. One woman in France, now very old, was asked why she hid children in her home during the Nazi occupation at the risk of loosing her life. She looked confused by the question and said, "How could I not do something, it never even entered my mind!"

My point? There are many altruistic personalities on the TWR site and if the horses were people the rescuers would be highly honored publicly but since those "rescued" are horses we don't have such a high profile. So, to all of you I say -I honor and treasure what you/we are doing. These acts of courage do not go unnoticed by the devine universal presence and people who care.

    Have a scintillating sunday!

Alex: This is interesting: "The Kentucky Derby is the longest running sporting event in America." Does that mean continuously run? This admittedly chauvinistic Saratogian (Susan in Saratoga, where are you?) takes pride in the fact that the Travers is the oldest horse race (first run in 1864)and also the oldest North American sporting event, but there were six years in which it wasn't run. The first Kentucky Derby was in 1875.

For the many who have expressed interest in the history of horseracing, I recommend "They're Off!: A History of Horse Racing in Saratoga" by Ed Hotaling. The writing isn't great, but the information and history is terrific. It also inevitably talks about racing history in a broader sense, so if you're a fan of the game, you'll find much to interest you.

No dates, as of yet. Main thing is to let the relevant reps know, via their constituents, that there is tremendous support for anti-slaughter, and that said reps should co-sponsor HR 503 or S311. Concomitantly, it's important to contact the relevant committee members (thus the daily posts of names) to urge them to get the relevant bill(HR 503 or S311) onto the floor for a vote.

    Hello Family!

Thank you Alex, for sharing your day, as always.

Happy Sunday, and THANK YOU ALL for your lovely messages and email to me. I'm not leaving and will continue to post. Those of you who wrote concerning specific subjects, Sandie and Teresa especially, it wasn't your fault. Really. Your thoughtfulness really touches me

##Sandie, I'm glad Mason will be having surgery and hope for a quick recovery. Don't worry that your little boy will be any less a little boy. He'll still be your Mason.

By the way, he is, unwittingly, I'm sure, now a poster boy for responsible breeding. Don't think this was mentioned before but Maine Coons have a predeliction to urinary tract disorders, bladder and kidney stones and kidney failure among the worst of them. I believe you said he was a rescue? What do you want to bet whoever surrendered him did so because he may have been showing early signs of kidney/bladder disease? If I only had a nickle for every surrender for undiagnosed genetic or breed-specific disorders, like Mason's, or hip dysplasia, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, whether it be for dogs, cats or horses, I could build a rescue/sanctuary of palatial proportions that would be a home for thousands. If only.....

You are all so dear to me, and Harriette, we need your inspiration. I especially loved your message written in the Cherokee language yesterday. Verna, you are family. Don't ever forget it.

    Thinking of Dee with love.

To top it off, I received a beautiful card from Mrs. Jackson yesterday. Written in Lael-green ink, on St. Patrick's Day. The messages from hevvin continue.

    Will check in later.

Be free and fly with the wind without fear of pain or injury. That's the only part about this whole tragedy that helps me smile - envisioning you romping, rearing, and rolling around in the green grass with the sun shining down on your shining coat.

    ####Lynne,

It's great you know your frens' names!! Yes,call to them by name if you see them even if they aren't right by the fence. If you stand there and get their attention, they might eventually come to you. Especially if they get a whiff of apples in the air!

Even if my horses are no where in sight I can go out and yell "SCOUT" and pretty soon here they ALL come. They know my voice and they know I'm the chow wagon...lol

    You're doing great!!!

    Nancy CT,

You may also want to look into Wellness brand cat food. I switched my brood of 4 kitties over a year ago after much research into what pet food is really made from. (eek,...just Google 'animal by products'and start reading..=(

Wellness is made from all human grade ingredients (i.e., everything in it is what is sold for human consumption, with no fillers, grains, preservatives, colors, flavorings). Bit more expensive, little harder to find, well worth it. My kitties LOVE it! And I feel good about what I'm feeding them.

Household preference is Chicken & Herring, canned.

The owning company is 'Old Mother Hubbard', with the brand being 'Wellness'. Google either to find a location near you that sells it.

    Good Luck!!

Finally read "Barbaro's Race Ends" in the U of Penn magazine (Pennsylvania Gazette) March-April issue. Nothing here we haven't already seen, but it's a good piece. The whole story with plenty of details on the outpouring of support for Bobby, a Sabrina Pierce photo of Barbaro and Dr. R, quotes from Gretchen Jackson at the news conference. Here is one quote: "On January 30, a sign put up at the Kentucky Derby Museum read simply, Barbaro, thanks for the dream."

Sandie~ I heard your Mason is going to have THE surgery.... It will be hard to have him out of your house for a bit, but in the end, you'll be glad you did this for him. Mickey is no less the 'man' than he was prior to the surgery. He stomps around and does the typical Maine Coon talking at all hours. No UTI's now for close to 4 years (knock on wood!). Purrs to Mason from Mickey..

One thing about the after effects of the surgery... because of redirecting the plumbing, the long hair on the backs of his legs tends to get icky. Mickey loves to take a bath, but in between I use unscented baby wipes back there...

Nancy CT - weighing in on the wet cat food. We are 100% wet food here, too. "PetGuard" brand (in some grocery stores natural food sections) without by-products. My cat loves the Beef, made with Coleman natural beef.

I also feed mostly raw, frozen Nature's Variety / Prairie, recommended by a holistic vet who also recommended digestive enzymes with that. Good luck!

    Teresa -- here I am!

"The Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs is the oldest major thoroughbred horse race in America. The first Travers took place in 1864 at Saratoga Race Course. The race began when bare-knuckles boxing champion and US congressman, John Morrissey held a four-day meeting at Horse Haven. The meeting was so successful it was decided to build a racetrack right across the street.

John Hunter and William R. Travers were said to be the organizers of building the Saratoga Race Course in 1864. Travers also owned and bred many of the best horses. Together, Hunter and Travers owned a horse named Kentucky, the first winner of the stakes."

Sorry Churchill, multiple sources / sports historians say the Derby is not the oldest continuous sporting event in the US. "The first annual Canada vs. USA cricket match, played since the 1840s, was attended by 10,000 spectators at Bloomingdale Park in New York. The USA vs.Canada cricket match is the oldest international sporting event in the modern world, predating even today's Olympic Games by nearly 50 years."

CROSS POSTING FROM DISCUSSION BOARD (Rescues)
    URGENT!!!

    Hi Everyone,

I have never posted a posting like this...so please excuse any errors...

There are 3 horses (Thoroughbreds) going to New Holland on Monday...

They are mares (there is a 4th, but we think her breeder will take her back).

If anyone has room PLEASE let me know...the seller wants $450 per horse ($1350 total for all 3...UNLESS other mare is not saved by breeder, but we are PRAYING he will take her back if not I will let you know ASAP)...I do not have room here nor the funds to save them all...so I am asking for help on behalf of these girls...we need to find a place to put them and then raise the needed funds by Monday morning...

If we can find a place for them, or spread them around, donations can be sent to my paypal address and we will pay the seller.

They were owned by an 80+ year old couple and they sent them to the sale...the hauler does not want to take them to the sale...but he can not keep them at his farm. He has been kind enough to take pics of them and send me the descriptions given to him...he has offered to haul them for basically his cost...

If you can help PLEASE call me or email me 717-965-7901 or email jo@saveahorsenow.org I have pics of them...they are numbered to match below...

I am off to bed, been otr all day...if donations are sent, please send them to angelacreshorsehaven@yahoo.com please put NEW HOLLAND MARES in the subject line (or drop me an email to let me know) if we do not find a place for them or something falls through ALL donated funds will be refunded...that way everyone who wants to, can donate and not have to wait till the morning till we find somewhere for them...

    Thanks!

    Jo

LOVING the post by Bonnie MacRaith at March 18, 2007 6:49 PM re The Altruistic Personality.

The altruistic personality cannot do nothing, cannot look the other way.

"How could I not do something, it never even entered my mind!"

Bonnie - I really love your post, re "The Altruistic Personality, rescuers of Jews in Nazi Europe" by Holocaust survivor Samuel Oliner, professor at Humboldt State Univ. (northern California). Decades later, he and his wife traveled to Europe and interviewed people who'd risked their lives during WWII hiding and sheltering and saving otherwise doomed Jews.
The following is from a documentary made from the
    interviews (copying from Bonnie's post):

One woman in France, now very old, was asked why she hid children in her home during the Nazi occupation at the risk of losing her life. She looked confused by the question and said, "How could I not do something, it never even entered my mind!"

Sounds like the horseloving FOB's to a tee!

NancyJean/Huntington Beach:) I know any animal can sense our fear...though I am more EXCITED and NERVOUS....but Harriette said they can sense that...I remember you wrote after I posted my first "meeting" with my frens...and I wonder if in your area, there might be a Horse Rescue? I know they are always looking for volunteers and there would be lots of people there to help you get acquainted with being around horses...look in your phone book, or call your local Humane Society, they may know.

I like dogs....dogs and I communicate VERY well, no matter thier size or breeds...horses are just so BIG:-0 and when they become 'excited' they "romp" and because of thier size it does scare me a little....BUT my frens are on the other side of the fence from me...so that helps alot! I am excited for you to try to find somewhere to meet a horsey fren!! Keep in touch and let me know how it's going:) Maybe together and with help from "those who know" you can become as comfortable as being around kitties and me the doggies:)

    Rosie Update:

Rosie is fine, my friend and EQUINE Veterinarian Dr. Jessie Arnold) was over yesterday afternoon, along with Sally Spencer and Cathy Potter. Dr. Arnold said it is not uncommon for mares to go over at all, baby is moving. There is nothing to be concerned about. If there were a problem, then Rosie would become ill, would not eat, drink etc. Additionally, the breed dates we were given could have been wrong. Dr. Armold stated it is not uncommon for a mare to go over, as it is the foal which determines when it is coming, and she said the little one just is not done cooking. She said it could be anytime. Additionally, the record for the longest mare in foal is 418 days. All is well with Rosie.

    dear Alex,
great postings on the up to date racing and adventures with hawty
    creek ..
    and that beauty, cobalt blue..
we make our way through March,--
    to FOB'S
--in the wake of the porcelain warrior presentation..
    when great trees fall....
    they bring me the thought
that great souls, any souls, do not die
there is a heap of old roots..
and somewhere from the old tree now sleeping and held by the ground,
    the great one,releases a seed
in the moss it rolls into a crack/
by spring the sun and rain warm and bathe it
    it begins to grow-
    older roots reach under
to support the little seed's fragile, tender roots..
through the storms ,the leaves fall and cover the little seedling
    protecting it from the cold

but when the tree that falls is a great young strappling,
    with really vibrant and powerful,limbs
its fresh new leaves bursting in all splendor across a hill or a pond,
    it is a different thing..

i am asked to summon other wisdom.
listening to dr richardson and watching how deeply he cares for doing
    something ,anything
the right way.in his way--totally committed-
.his title hanging over his head and barbaro's
    ..unspoken to
but the film footage casting a shimmer on his face as he turns away to
    negotiate his tears
his side remark, that the has failed barbaro
    ..i AM really listening now
in the invisible and the visible weave of it all-- clutching my
    grandfather;s hanky
..he needs to say this and i will hear it
    FOR him...

and that the beginnings of his talk introducing the difficulties of
    mending a shattered leg .
.that it is a long journey from the xrays fo the masked leg
to the screws and plates implanted in the limb.,all fixed and healed
.the sequence beautifully captured by nancy and lyn..me--
i struggle and steep in the textures of the night
    a sense the room
    full
    with weighted respect
    ,sorrow,grief and happiness
to know of barbaro and to have the chance to repair ,to build, to
    create his legacy
    ..to serve
.the room was filled with that feeling.
.you all were there and not there.
this talk, a process in long list of sorrow
the future..to translate ..what he did ..that is what dr dean spoke
    of ..
..the kindness in chairs around me.
.gretchen jackson next to my left and to my right several horse farm
owners who had had their own share of losses
..i held the space for the man in front of me and the couples behind me..
.two things i would underline that i got from the evening.
that dr dean wanted to convey the complexity of his care and surgical
    operations
that barbaro had many happy times in his new journey of healing.at NBC.
,..his real joy of eating grass and pulling dr dean all around the
    pasture
..the quiet communion between the nurses ,the staff and gretchen';s
    daily visits
.and between himself and barbaro as noted in the photos of them together.
....he went from what happened,. to how they dealt with it all and the
quality of his life at NBC AND THEN CONCLUDING with several points
about the uniqueness of equestrian medicine ..its costs and its
    research and its demanding nature..
..the image of barbaro';s hoof filled with laminitis
    .very clearly compromised and infected.
.and the long hours of preparation and dance that evolved through out
his care and those main surgeries
..the icu team well oiled and responsive to every breath..of the horse
    and the surgeon..
i also realize that the territory and perspective dr dean comes from
is not from where many of us sit
    ..
he has a job to do and he is responsible naturally, for everything he
    does.in his medical vet world..
there are people who have to analyze each other and themselves in the
professional context of their world to make themselves even better as
healers..to solve laminitis for example, imagine
the joy of finding a cure for this
he noted the many different protocols for each form of laminitis
    .as in any profession-
his responses to laymen questions ,sometime emphatic and
    cursory,caustic,.edgy..
do not deal with the questioneer as much as his territory .,his
    repsonsibilities, his perspective..
    i realized
it is rare for so much sharing to go on about a patient;'s welfare on a
    global forum
..this could compromise the patient and his care , the staff and other
of their patients well being ..
    WE HAVE HAD ALEX.
...so making a dvd of the talk is not like a performance.to be recorded
.it has huge implications..and as do his responses to innocent questions
    form the public..
that barbaro is a giant in equestrian history
    also adds complications..of communication..for sure...
for the fans that may have felt dr dean
did not literally address the title in a philosophical discussion
    ..how could he

    so soon?
can anyone really eulogize barbaro yet?
so much has happened in the eight months
and it has been some experience
the public has been able to be a part of his story BECAUSE of a lot of
    greatness around B
generosity of the owners and the dexterity and intelligence and craft of
the doctors and staff at NBC..
    all a unique experience.
so what i can i add? about that night?
    /
..is that hearts were suspended .open raw..
.i saw how noble an effort dr dean. made
to thank everyone, form NBC and himself,
to all those who have supported barbaro--the fans..
and his care. and also to thank everyone for their gifts to the barbaro
    fund.
.which he mentioned with an element of delight--.he seemed very proud
    of that
w.ell done fans of barbaro..for sure.
i asked him towards the end of his q and a.
what is the bottom line, for you..what will you take from this
    experience in your life?
and he soberly and quielty added-=.

''i look back-- on my training . the educaiton.''
--impolication maybe that he was grateful for all the vet education-
-..'' and how much people love their animals.''------
    -

    simple and to the point
in essence, the effort on his part
to move forward is extraordinary and i say premature
..the shock has not worn out or been lived out yet
.. and the nbc staff has nobly set in motion all the right things to
enable healing ,to get to ork and continue the legacy..NOW
but the truth of the matter is
that moving forward does not mean leaving barbaro behind.
.it means to be accountable to oneself ..in a new way in light of the
tragedy lived through and it takes time
..because we have been in the time of when barbaro existed.
    therefore,
.we have something amazing to incorporate
FROM THE PHYSICAL OF HIM TO THE INVISIBLE OF HIM
    into our lives

    my prayer is that this
    in the end
dr dean and all involved in his life of love and joy can reap that grace
    and forgiveness.into their hearts..
..how to do tht may be the journey..tha tis exciting and a mystery ,too

so, from the talk, i got a whole sense of the honor of serving this
great intellect og barbaro;s --the great athlete and personality
yes, his absence brings up that his job is done on some level and his
    surrender informs my life
in ways i havent a clue
    right now.
i do know that dr dean and the staff, worked tirelessly to save barbaro
in true excellence..on so many levels.
    . we all know that.
.the rest grows complicated in the grieving process.and
maybe bearing witness is a great service to him
..that is what i got from the jacksons silent and steady presence that
night[..bearing their own sorrow with quiet elegance.wanting to
    sup-port nbc and dr. dean.]
    ..the fans of barbaro
in the audience during that talk. and yet so simple..maybe we are here
    to hear his pain
..and help him forgive himself for his severe judgment of himself...
    i embrace dr dean
..in his valid, profound, sorrow and feelings
that IN HIS OWN EYES, he didnt measure up
    and THAT
    may really be
the measure of this man..his greatness.
    in the light,
    martita.

    Hi All,

Hey just so there isn't a misunderstanding, I was being sarcastic yesterday about nobody caring about my posts. I see things got possibly misread and my sarcasm fell by the wayside.

Also, I didn't mean for it to sound that I was unhappy about the new posters. All are welcome in Barbaro Nation, if they be a Fan. Always can use more friends. I was just remembering some old times and having a rough day and haven't been altogether myself these past few days. Please forgive me if anyone was offended it was certainly unintentional. You here are family to me and I wouldn't hurt anyone here for anything. Not on purpose. Not my style. Just missing some ol' pals Shelley in Ca. I hadn't seen either and it was she not Shelley A I think that had asked about the race yesterday. Whew when senility sets in it comes fast. The nice thing about senility? It's all new to me!!

On calling horses by their names:

Gonna have to look this up for the details, but as I recall -

a tragic Greek hero tried to drive Apollo's chariot but the horses wouldn't listen to him - chariot got too close to the sun and he perished. The version I read pointed out that he didn't know the horses' names so they refused to obey his commands. Anybody remember this one or do I have to hit the books? Oh - that's right - in the 21st Century, it's hit the google, not the books! CJ

    Martita,

Once again you seemed to have reached down into the soul deep within my core and brought me some balance here this day. Beautifully written as is your usual way. How I treasure so many involved on this board but ya know I'm just not usually gushy about it publicly. You do seem to give me that warm fuzzy feeling with your posts and I'll never forget you. No I'm not leaving just stating the simple fact of it. BTW,... Linda lovehugs in or. has something I wanted to show you. Thanks for the awareness.

    Enjoy Your Day Everyone!!

    Hi Laurie H:)

Pretty Neat-0, Huh? Well....I will give this "call them" thing a try....I at least won't be too embarrassed, I hope, as the cars drive by pretty fast...they won't have time to realize my calls are falling on "deaf ears"...and on the "quiet road" part of the pasture not many folks around to watch me be such a 'novice'....:)
I am bound and determined though, to get close enough physically and spiritually to hopefully feel them breathe on my cheek!!! THAT would be the BEST:)

So glad you're back Miss Laurie:) I don't get to respond to your tuck-ins as I'm not home until after the board closes most nights..I help an elder person....but I DO read them:) and I DO love them:) and you...xoxo

Posted by: CHERYL G NO HORSE SLAUGHTER at March 18, 2007 10:50 PM

I submitted this article to The San Gabriel Valley Tribune the day after little Fitch died. They printed it today in the Sunday newspaper in the Opinion section. Just another idea of how we can get this subject out to the public and hopefully make a difference.

    End Horse Slaughter

A baby died last night. A defenseless, helpless baby. He died at the hands of ruthless thieves and killers.

It was not a human baby, but in God's eyes he was one of his creations - a creation entrusted to mankind to watch over and care for.

Fitch was a seven-month-old colt who had been abused most of his life. The rescue facility, Pure Thoughts, had saved him from a kill buyer.

During the middle of the night, someone tried to kidnap him. Because of his mistrust in humans, he would not go willingly. They dragged him across the concrete, resulting in separation of his rib muscle from the bones, a twisted intestine, hernia and broken teeth. He fought for his life for two days, but died from his injuries. He died in the arms of the people who had rescued him.

The purpose of the kidnapping? To sell the colt to a slaughter house.

Over 100,000 horses are slaughtered each year in this country. It is a painful journey and an even more painful death. Over 30,000 of those slaughtered are stolen from private owners and rescue groups.

Consumption of horse meat by humans is outlawed in the United States. Slaughter houses are not. These are Belgium-owned companies, and they ship their meat to foreign countries where it is sold as a delicacy.

Earlier this year, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act was introduced to both the House and the Senate. If passed, horse slaughter for human consumption would be prohibited immediately.

No horse slaughter means less kidnapping. Less kidnapping means animals like Fitch will have a chance.

I hope these bills pass. I would not want Fitch's painful death to be in vain.

    hAy bArbaro Nation!

Greetings from Mom and Dad's in Omaha. Still receiving daily emails from my Lizzie via her "prison guards'" computer....apparently my cat has become a revolutionary!

Today I learned that my cousins in Iowa bought a horse for their children. I do not know where they bought the horse, but he is 20 years old! Rob, my cousin's husband, grew up on a farm and wanted a gentle older horse for his children. I told my family that that is a horse who would likely have been a prime target for a killer otherwise. I am going to send some materials to my cousin and try to get her on board. I think I recruited my nephew's girlfriend today; maybe she can turn my nephew around. I haven't been able to.

Joe the Horse, I can't catch up on posts till later, but I hope you had an uneventful journey home to find your stall full of fresh straw and a bucket of carrots.

A FABULOUS LETTER ... YOU DESERVED TO BE PUBLISHED ...

I hope your efforts manifest one thousand fold in saving the horses from this horrible fate.

Martita, your words bring the soul to life, more particularly, Barbaro's soul. Your post today brought Barbaro's journey into the light, gave the journey itself a soul of its own. And how privleged are we to share that soul! Somehow, whenever I read your words, I feel love and acceptance, of Barbaro's eternal being, and our struggle to learn to live without his physical presence. The words that seized my attention were these: "but the truth of the matter is
that moving forward does not mean leaving barbaro behind." That's it; that says it all: carrying him with us will enable us to go forward.

From my innermost being, thank you, Martita.

    Lynne Browne:

I know how you feel .... I want and need so much to touch, feel, smell a horse, but I'm a little scared too because my one and only experience on a horse had a third party involved .... bramble bushes that I was introduced to. But I'm sure that was my fault due to my horrible 'steering' abilities. I haven't been on or near a horse since then, but I want to and I need to be. I am hoping I get that opportunity when I travel to DelPark next month ... it's something that I must do to feel closer to Barbaro and all the horses. I know that you understand.

I am so proud of you and the steps you are taking ... mine would be small baby steps too, but it would be a start, and that's all I need and want right now.

Skyler ... JOE THE HORSE IS COMING HOME!! Please keep us posted on all the details ... I am so happy for you and for Joe, too.

If you find that story let me know.. Yes I think it very important to call the horses by their names at all times.

When I first started talking care of the horses at the farm where I board there were several horses there the owner had never bothered to name. I couldn't believe such a thing.
He is not a nice horse owner, always yells and slaps at the horses doesn't have any patience when they don't do what he tells them..

I said how can they, they don't know who you're yelling at, they don't not only don't know their
names, they don't have a name.

I wrote a poem about one of them, a beautiful stallion palomino, he was four years old..no name.
I call him Trigger, of course, growing up in love with the original Trigger/Roy Rogers..

So, yes, Lynne, call your frens by their names, who cares if cars are going by, because horses are prey animals they have very keen senses of sight , smell and hearing.

I read a saying once that said in every horses life one deserves to have a little girl to love them..I think that goes with BIG girls ,too.

Posted by: Harriette Brillianthawk at March 19, 2007 12:21 AM

Harriette!!! :) I too grew up 'in love' w/Roy and Trigger and was sooooo envious of Dale:) You know, she got to be his wife! Of course, I was 8 or 9 years old.....LOL But I had a 'big time' crush on Mr. Rogers....then years later in my 30's I found out he had Trigger STUFFED and in a Museum...STUFFED? I was disappointed:/ I was actually kinda horrified at the thought!

Nice to know another 'girl' here shared my adoration:)

Hiya, FsOB! I have a telephone appt. booked with Mayor Bacon from Kaufman, TX, for tonight at 8 PM EDST. She sent everyone her fond regards when we spoek briefly by phone on Friday. She is sooo grateful for the efforts on the part of the FsOB to close the horse slaughterhouse in Kaufman. Sad to say, the appellate court decision has NOT resulted in this "plant" being closed yet. I am planning to nominate Mayor B. for a "Profiles in Courage" award.

To Bonnie MacReith: Your posting about altruism was very profound. Very poignant, especially due to the death of Lucie Aubrac (a great heroine of the French Resistance, earlier this week).

To Susan in Saratoga: Thank you for the link to the article from UPENN. What a stunningly beautiful photo of Barbaro and his dear friend and surgeon, Dr. Dear R.

To Linnie: I can't remember whether you live in CT. Do you enjoy zeppoles on Saint Joseph's Day?

Has anyone heard from Jeannette Cavalier lately?

To Mary L: Thank you for the photos of Ernie, outdoors with his friend Viet. Really haeartwarming to see on a sad Saturday.

    Hello Barbaro,

Today was pretty uneventful and slow for me. The air has a cooler feel to it today but I won’t complain...

Honey, I don't know if this has been brought up on the board or not, but, did you ever throw Peter off of you or run off on him while training? I still wonder about things you might have done...

Are you ready for your blanket? With your wide selection to choose from, let’s grab your favorite one, okay?

Favorite blankets always seem to offer more comfort than anything else...

We’ll pull it high on your neck and tuck the folds under your chin while letting the ends drape softly around you. Dream sweet dreams of loved ones, tender times and a tummy full of treats.

Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days.

Good night Honey. You know I love you very much. Now please close your eyes and drift off to sleep... Good night. XXOOxxo

    Hello Hope,

I'm getting excited for your filly Hope... I'm sure no one is more excited than you.

I know you're getting such wonderful care from such loving people. They wait too Hope. They are so excited as well!

    Can you sense their anticipation?

Are you ready for your blanket? We'll use the soft one tonight with a little extra fluff to go with it. Let's pull it high on your neck and lay the folds under your chin.

Good night Hope. Close your eyes and have sweet dreams tonight. Hopefully your little one lets you sleep soundly through the night... Good night. I love you. xxoox xxo

    Hello Hawty Creek,

It sounds like Alex is pleased with your training and it's progress. And Sweetheart, the Fans are pleased that you are keeping Alex in the saddle!

Let's grab your blanket and get you cuddled up for the night. It sounds like it is a bit cooler there tonight.

We'll pull it high on your neck and fluff the fold beneath your chin.

Dream sweet dreams Hawty. Close your eyes and dream of finish lines and treats for your tummy.

Good night. You know you're loved Hawty. Shhhhh. xxoo

    C. Jaffe,

Are you thinking of the Greek myth about Helios, the Greek god of the Sun, who daily drove the Chariot of the Sun across the heavens? His chariot was driven by four horses, Pyrois, Eos, Aethon, and Phlegon. The youth Phaeton once convinced Helios (his father)to allow him to drive the chariot but the young man couldn't control the horses and they raced wildly, coming too close to the earth, and the young Phaeton perished. (anyway it goes something like that.....not sure about the reference to the horses' names though???)

If you are still around. I read you concerns about Rosie. I just returned from my visit to MHR and can assure that Rosie is yes, overdue but fine. She looks great albeit quite hefty, eating.....oh but we all know that, and shows no signs of being in any distress. Dr. Jesse, an equine vet, joined us for dinner, looked Rosie over and said she was fine. I learned a lot about mare prenancies over dinner. It's not unusual for them to be overdue this long. Babies are born when they are ready....Jesse said "cooked"....LOL. Inducing labor is NOT....I repeat NOT an option. There are exceptions but NOT for Rosie. She was pleased with Rosie and said everything looked fine. We even saw some kicking action going on. So, Marie, don't worry...I think this baby is just waiting until he/she is "done cooking".
