    Barbaro Updates: 245

    updates are now here.

Update 1692: NoBiz completed his final work for the Wood Memorial on saturday and will ship to New York on thursday: Nobiz Like Shobiz Ready for Wood After :59 3/5 Drill. Street Sense has traveled from Florida to Churchill Downs: Street Sense Returned to Churchill Downs Stable.

Edgar Prado, who had a banner day at Gulfstream on saturday, is offering the saddle he used to win on Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby for Charity: Barbaro's Saddle to Raise Money for Disabled Riders.

Update 1691: At the races! Teresa from Brooklyn (occasional poster) sent this report from Gulfstream Park yesterday:

General impressions of Gulfstream: I didn't go anywhere near the newly-opened casinos and gaming rooms, focusing instead of scoping out betting machines, food/drink, and a place to sit. When I arrived at 12:30 (later than expected due to early morning car trouble on Alligator Alley), I was fearful that I'd look like one of those people who shows up at the Travers at noon and is bewildered that there's nowhere to sit. I was pleasantly surprised to find that parking was easy and that the main building, while crowded, wasn't unmanageable. I wandered past he main building to the tented area, where reasonably comfortable bleachers had been set up, starting at the 16th pole. Those seats didn't fill throughout the day, and I ended up with a front row seat at the 16th pole--prime seating, especially as it was free (as was parking--thank you, slot machines). By about the 6th race, demand had exceeded capacity: long, long lines to bet (I got in line at 6 MTP and got shut out, at least in part because people didn't know how to use the betting machines--did me a favor because my horse lost, anyway), get a drink, go to the bathroom. The place never felt excessively crowded, but nor did it feel like it could comfortably provide the services needed.

For a Grade I day, the undercard was something of a disappointment, aided no doubt in part by the Dubai races and the quality of horses and jockeys over there. With all due respect to Prado's greatness, he benefitted significantly by JR's (Velazquez) decision to ride in Dubai; Prado picked up JR's mounts on Pletcher's horses. Good move by Edgar to stay put! I can't imagine that Pletcher won't give Scat Daddy back to JR for the Derby (JR's been on the horse since he was a two year old), but it will be an interesting scenario.

The Derby set up perfectly for Scat Daddy, who showed that he's figured out what he's supposed to do. As a baby, he came from way off the pace, greenly flying down the stretch and relying on his speed. Yesterday, he stalked nicely and comfortably, and when the time came, he did exactly what he needed to do. When I saw Stormello go to the front and set reasonable fractions through the half, I knew that Scat Daddy would be tough to beat. He was impressive.

Given Chelokee's trips in his last two races, we probably haven't seen what he can really do, but his jockey's got to figure out how to get him in position; at this point, we don't even know whether Chelokee knows how to close when given the opportunity, though he gives every indication of having what it takes.

I'll be at the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct next week, and it will be interesting to see how the field compares. The Wood was won by Bellamy Road in a remarkable 17 length victory two years ago, and last year, over a muddy track, Bob and John narrowly beat a fast-closing Jazil, who came on the national scene for the first time that day.

Update 1690: A quiet morning this morning for me at Fair Hill. I went in late and only had Hawty Creek to take care of, and was not planning on riding her. I cannot see a race in the current book for her so will need to just keep her ticking over until something comes up. I saw Tim when I arrived at Fair Hill. He had just breezed Red Aspen, and was happy with the way she breezed. I think she has one more breeze to go and will then be ready for her debut. Lets hope she continues her impressive career this year. Tim and I also discussed the races yesterday. He's a big Invasor fan, so was happy about that. Anyway, a nice quiet morning, mucking out Hawty Creek and then giving her a good pick of grass.

Update 1689: Godolphin reports that Discreet Cat is suffering from a throat abscess: DISCREET CAT UPDATE. Sporting Life reports: ABSCESS BLAMED FOR CAT DEFEAT, excerpt:

Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford explained: "He was scoped in the week before the race so the problem has materialised in the 48 hours coming up to the race.

"He basically has an aggressive throat abscess which is clearly causing great discomfort and he is on a course of anti-biotics.

"Breathing would have been difficult during the race which explains his performance."

Discreet Cat won each of his three starts in America last term, culminating in victory in the Cigar Mile, and a return trip is still on the agenda.

"The plan remains for him to go back to America to continue his career. Obviously it is disappointing he was beaten but at least we know there was a reason for it," Crisford added.

I spoke to Peter Brette last night. Chelokee appeared to cool out well after his Florida Derby third. He noted Ramon was pretty upset with himself. There are no plans yet for Chelokee, but it is likely he will ship to Keeneland and they will take it from there. Peter was very happy with Chelokee's performance.

Update 1688: Here are some of the media reports from yesterday's racing:

Update 1687: Scat Daddy took the Florida Derby, beating Notional and Chelokee. Scat Daddy is certainly looking like a strong contender for the Derby, but Chelokee ran a terrific race in his first race in stakes company. Ramon tried to bring Chelokee up the inside rail turning for home and the gap narrowed. He had to take up and then bring Chelokee wide, they closed to finish third. Chelokee ran an impressive race in defeat.

Update 1686: Some quick thoughts on the Dubai World Cup evening. Excellent competition from horses around the world. Nice to see horses from Asia, Europe and America competing. Invasor was amazing. Discreet Cat looked like he did not get the mile and a quarter trip. English Channel looked uncomfortable throughout his race. Lava Man still cannot win outside of California, no matter the surface. Godolphin is strugging (and not sure Coolmore even showed up). Great to see the victories and horses we did, from around the world!

Jeannine Edwards just e-mailed a few pictures from tonight's festivities: ABC crew in Dubai for World Cup.

Update 1685: I N V A S O R ... very impressive, Premium Tap was a good second. The rest were far ... far behind, including Discreet Cat who finished last!

Update 1684: Jack Ireland, who is planning to attend the Delaware Park Celebration on April 29, writes about the local horses in the Florida Derby: Florida Derby a big step for local horses.

I just saw a replay of Asiatic Boy in the UAE Derby, that was a dominating performance. I am not sure what happened to Godolphin's filly Folk but there was only one horse in this race.

Update 1683: A quiet morning for me this morning, with six to ride. My leg is no better than yesterday, and felt sore on my first set, riding Hawty Creek out back. She was good, which was a good thing! My second set was Grandma. Tim was on Nautical Agent. As we were approaching the track (Tapeta track) a set was breezing by the gap. This spooked Grandma who then wheeled. That's not good at the best of times, but when you are a little sore and protecting something, it is not good. Anyway, we did survive. Grandma galloped a mile and a quarter in behind Nautical Agent. Tim then went on to breeze Nautical Agent 3/8ths. She looked good drawing away from me and Tim said she went nicely, really lengthening her stride. My next set was Nonpariel, who went across the fields with Tim on Quick Quest. We did two gallops up a hill. They both went nicely. After that I had three more to ride, one to the Tapeta track, and two joggers on the dirt track. A nice low key morning which I survived!

We had a couple of Fans of Barbaro visiting which was nice, I hope they enjoyed their visit and were not to put off by my limp! Now settling in to watch some of the races on HRTV, and of course I'll then look forward to the ABC show. Tim reckons Invasor is a lock. I am not so sure.

Update 1682: The main racing focus today will be on Dubai (World Cup) and Gulfstream (Florida Derby).

Invasor versus Discreet Cat in the $6million World Cup will be a terrific showdown. They did meet at this meeting last year in the UAE Derby, Discreet Cat winning in fine style. Since that time both Invasor and Discreet Cat have been unbeaten, Invasor meeting the best America has to offer. Invasor is coming to the race off a recent win, Discreet Cat has not run since the Cigar Mile in November. It should be very interesting. The undercard is fantastic. HRTV covers the races live this morning, ABC will have a 2 hour special this afternoon beginning at 2:30 pm (and here they are this morning preparing: ABC crew in Dubai for World Cup). Enjoy.

Clash of the titans in World Cup
World Cup Connections Confident Day Before Race
It's on! Invasor, Discreet Cat to do battle in the desert in Dubai World Cup.

The Florida Derby is a major Derby prep, used last year by Barbaro to set himself up for his facile Derby victory. Michael Matz has another contender, Chelokee. Chelokee comes into this race off an allowance win, and while he has no stakes experience, he has looked impressive in his two wins. The Florida Derby includes three of the first four finishers of the Fountain of Youth (NoBiz is going for the Wood Memorial next weekend), Scat Daddy, Stormello (who went back to California and now is back in Florida) and Adore the Gold. Notional also comes in from California. This should be a great race, HRTV will be covering it.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

We are definitely into Spring in Maine now - 50s and sunny, but the wind has dried everything out so much we have a high fire danger. We expect some precipitation on Monday.

I'm looking forward to the racing this afternoon and finally seeing Discreet Cat (so handsome!) in action against Invasor (He's the best!). Wish I could see the Florida Derby but I can't so I will just say right now GO CHELOKEE!

Off for another cup of Green Mt.

    Good morning all

The Dubai World Cup should be fantastic. I'm hoping for a good run from Sir Percy on the turf and to find out whether it really is a two-horse race between Invasor and Discreet Cat on the dirt.

    ### Janice

I don't think I shall be able to get to see it live, but I think you can get replays on the Dubai World Cup website. It's a good site anyway to see news about what's going on there.

Safe passage to all riders and horses today and in the weeks and months ahead.

Safe rides for all in the desert...and here in the states this weekend. Thank you Alex, for the continued pix and commentary from Jeannine.

With all that is happening--much of it hopeful--on the horse slaughter front, don't forget the rescue groups who are struggling to care for and feed the horses they've already pulled out of the killer feedlots.

There's need everyday... check out the Rescue section of the Forum, and chances are, you'll find someone who would be happy for your donation--whatever the amount...

I have a soft spot for Joe and Cathy Shelton near Sacramento CA> They are in need of fosterhomes as well as the usual day-to-day stuff for their over 200 horses...

Joe calls it "our wonderful addiction." So it is...

IMHO, we're going to be involved in support and maintenance for so many of these groups more and more if--no, not if, WHEN--S311 and HR503 are passed into law to protect our horses from transport into terrible Mexico or Canada...

Joe Shelton at TB Friends writes a great journal everyday:
    http://tbfriends.com/index.php

It's another day to do the right thing. Be kind. Life is precious, life is short...so, mazeltov!

PS: Thank you so much for the Junkyard Stallion post last week. I loved it. We have driving competitions near here every July and we get to see those old type Morgans on many carts or carriages. They are to die for....

PRAYERS AND SAFE HOME FOR ALL BRAVE HORSES WHO PUT HOOVES TO TRACK WORLD-WIDE TODAY!

I was reading an obituary notices for the aunt of a childhood friend last night, and discovered this poem from an anthology published by the deceased woman...it seems particularly appropriate here...I offer it for Barbaro:

"When you are gone I know that I shall think of you when sunsets die,

Knowning that you have long been blessed with darkness and are safe at rest.

And long before dawn floods the sky you will have found the day,

And I, bowing my head in silent prayer, shall find your spirit everywhere."

Prayers that all the horses run swift and come safe today.

Big Red, Barbaro please watch over the races today and keep your brothers and sisters safe. Love and miss you.

    Have a good day everyone.

Alex, hope your morning workouts have gone well, now prop up the leg and settle back to watch the racing. Thanks for all the updates this week from Dubai and Florida, you're one of a kind.

ADORE THE GOLD worked lights out before the SWALE. He worked 2 bullets prior to that race. He worked kind of slow prior to the Fountain of Youth and came up short. he's working like a train again now, look for a REAL BIG performance today.
CHELOKEE got a ride like Ray Charles was on him last time. If he came of age in his last(I think he did) and gets anykind of a favorable trip today he WILL be a force in todays race.
I think todays winners will come from the group that ran off the board in The FOuntain or didn't run in it at all.(SEE NOTIONAL)
    Could that be the trifecta???

URGENT~ NEW RECALL OF PET FOOD- DRY!

I know this is off-subject, but Hills Pet Food has recalled their Prescription M/D Feline Dry food- 4 lb bags & 10 lb bags. This is the FIRST recall of dry food due to the contaminated wheat gluten. This food is given primarily to diabetic cats (my Mickey included....). Fortuntately, Mickey has not shown any ill effects but needless to say, I have stopped giving it to him. I am waiting to hear from my vet as to an alternative and will post her recommendations later on.

Safe racing for all horses & riders in today's events. GO Discreet Cat in the World Cup!!! Can't decide who I'm rooting for in the FL Derby... too many favorites, too many loyalties. I think I'll just let Barbaro decide!

IMPORTANT NEWS -- ALPO WET FOOD RECALL

For the full company news release follow this link
    PURINA RECALL

"Alpo" Brand Prime Cuts In Gravy Canned Dog Food

    Voluntary Nationwide Recall

    No Dry Purina Products Involved

St. Louis, Missouri, March 30, 2007

Nestl預urina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO? Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17
    pet food manufacturing facilities.

Earlier today the FDA announced the finding of melamine in products related to the March 16 Menu Foods recall, and advised Purina of the source of the contaminated supply. Purina then determined that it had received some quantity from the suspect supplier. The company proactively notified the FDA and immediately began this recall process.

Purina is confident that the contaminated wheat gluten has been isolated to this limited production quantity of ALPO Prime Cuts canned products.

The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a ?Best Before Feb. 2009? date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Purina's 5.3-ounce Mighty Dog? pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution on March 16 as part of the Menu Foods recall. ONLY Mighty Dog pouch products and specific date codes of ALPO Prime Cuts canned dog food are being recalled.[continued]

Hoping for safe racing for all today on a big day. Missing the Florida Derby in person for the first time in 15 years to take care of Over Enough. His eye is slowly improving, thanks for everyone's concern. There have been 20 winners of the Florida Derby who have gone on the win the Kentucky Derby. All week on the S. Florida radio stations they have been playing Barbaro's Florida Derby stretch run and saying "last year Barbaro captured the Florida Derby then went on to capture America's heart." Thinking of him especially today.

Dubai races have started, waiting the start of the 3rd race right now.

Thoughts are with all the horses caught in the Illinois "pipeline" hoping people will come to their senses and turn the horses over to the rescue organizations offering to take them.

    Good Morning Fambleee

Alex, so sorry your "laig" is still bothersome. Hope that maybe you'll be able to take some time off of it today and rest and heal. Thank you for the great links.

Thinking good thoughts for our Chelokee baby and for Adore The Gold. Praying for safe rides for eveyone near and afar.

Frightening news again from Purina, who have voluntarily recalled Alpo products. Hope there is some reassurance to all that there is 24 hour task forces all over the country, not just at Menu Foods and the FDA, trying to get to the bottom of this nightmare. Friends and colleagues at UCDavis and CSU in particular are working very hard to find what's gone wrong. So much of the data found so far doesn't add up, i.e., "melamine", and how did it get into the food supply, and particulary the aminopterin. Hope it's all behind us soon and our little ones will continue to be happy and healthy and can safely eat the food they love. That's what's so tragic and devastating. Our little ones are doing nothing but eating their FOOD. Having a real hard time with that..

####anyway...BarbZ will get to your blog today. PROMISE!!

###LaurieH beautiful tuck-in last night, as always

###Nina, glad Butter is happy and I would LOVZE to get puppeeee kisses from her.

In honor of Secretariat on his birthday:

A son of Bold Ruler out of Somethingroyal, by *Princequillo, Secretariat was a colt that no one thought could run the Kentucky Derby distance, a mile and a quarter, let alone the Belmont's mile and a half. Bold Ruler's foals grew up with a lot of speed, but their best distances were one mile or under.

He was a good looking colt, bright red with a thick neck, deep shoulders, wide sprung ribs with plenty of room for lungs and heart, and a powerful rear end. He was well balanced over all, and his legs were straight. You couldn't fault his conformation. He had a white star and strip on his face, and three white stockings to make him extra handsome. Given that his father was a premier sire and his mother, Somethingroyal, was the dam of more than one stakes winner, including Sir Gaylord, perhaps this plus his near perfect conformation should have foretold his future.

Secretariat's first race was on July 4, 1972, in a 5-1/2 furlong maiden race at Aqueduct. He was pinched back coming out of the starting gate, and nearly went down. There were more traffic problems on the turn for home, but he came charging at the leaders down the stretch to finish fourth. Not bad for a first start with bad racing luck.

He then won a maiden race and an allowance race. Trainer Lucien Laurin then moved the colt up in class, running him in the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga on August 16, which he won by three lengths, coming on strong at the end.

Secretariat finished the year by winning the Hopeful Stakes, Belmont Futurity, Laurel Futurity, and Garden State Stakes. He only lost one other race as a 2 year old, a disqualification in the Champagne Stakes because he ducked in at midstretch, bothering another horse. He had nine starts and seven wins, had won $456,404, and became only the third two-year-old to be named Horse of the Year, after Native Dancer in 1952 and the filly Moccasin in 1965. He was the only two-year-old to be voted Horse of the Year unanimously.

Secretariat won his first two starts as a three-year old: the Bay Shore and Gotham Stakes, both easily. But he was found to have an abcess on his gums just before the Wood Memorial Stakes on April 20. His trainer, Lucien Laurin, decided to run him anyway. Angle Light got off to a nice, easy lead and went on to narrowly beat Sham, while Secretariat came in third.

Secretariat entered the Kentucky Derby as the 3-to-2 favorite (in an entry with Angle Light), but people were not so sure he was the same horse he was the year before, after his defeat in the Wood Memorial. He came out of the gate near the back of the pack, then began passing horses on the first turn, caught Sham at the top of the stretch, and won going away by 2-1/2-lengths, running the first and only Derby in less than two minutes, 1:59-2/5 for 1-1/4 miles.

Secretariat's quarter-mile times for the Derby were astounding: :25 1/5, :24, :23 4/5, :23 2/5 and :23. He ran each quarter faster than the one before. No horse had ever accomplished this in a mile and a quarter race.

In the Preakness Stakes, jockey Ron Turcotte (who rode him in all but two of his races) was wise enough to detect the slow early pace, and encouraged the big colt to stretch out, and stretch out he did, moving to the front as the six-horse field entered the backstretch. Secretariat led the rest of the race, winning by 2-1/2 lengths over Sham. Pimlico's electric timer read 1:55 for 1-3/16 miles, a second slower than the track record. Clockers for the Daily Racing Form, however, clocked the race in 1:53-2/5. Several days after the race, Pimlico officials changed the time of the race to 1:54-2/5, saying that was the time clocker E. T. McLean Jr. had hand-recorded. The time of this race is still controversial, and many feel that Secretariat should be credited with yet another record for his Preakness win.

The morning of the Belmont, he was jumping out of his skin he was so fit, rearing and bucking in the walking ring, rolling his eyes and ready to run. Only five horses were entered in the race to challenge him. Secretariat and Sham both went after the lead at the start of the race and engaged in a six-furlong duel, clocked in 1:09-4/5, an incredible time for a mile and a half race, and the fastest such time in Belmont history. The speed duel finished Sham, who was injured and never raced again, coming in last in the race. With no competetion but himself, Secretariat ran like the wind, going the mile in 1:34 1/5 and the mile and a quarter in 1:59 flat, faster than his Derby time. He won the race by 31 lengths, an all-time record, while running the 1-1/2 miles in 2:24, knocking 2-3/5 seconds off the track record.

Secretariat was the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 25 years.

Secretariat raced nine more times, winning six, coming in second twice and third in his last race. His major losses were to Onion and Prove Out, both trained by Allen Jerkens (ever after known as the Giant Killer). Onion defeated him in the Whitney Stakes, when Secretariat was fighting off a virus, and Prove Out beat him in the Woodward Stakes, which was run on a sloppy track that Secretariat couldn't get hold of.

Secretariat retired to stud at Claiborne Farm, moving into his daddy Bold Ruler's stall. He sired 41 stakes winners, and became a noted broodmare sire, but never achieved the success at stud that he had on the track. Perhaps it is fitting that he remain the one and only Secretariat.

Secretariat was voted No. 35 among top North American athletes of the 20th century by Sports Century, the only non-human among them.

At age 19, Secretariat came down with laminitis, a very serious condition of the hooves. Everything possible was done for him, but he could not be saved. He was humanely put down, and buried at Claiborne Farm.

Dr. Thomas Swerczek, a professor of veterinary science at the University of Kentucky, performed a necropsy of his body. All of the horse's vital organs were normal in size except for the heart.

"We were all shocked," Swerczek said. "I've seen and done thousands of autopsies on horses, and nothing I'd ever seen compared to it. The heart of the average horse weighs about nine pounds. This was almost twice the average size, and a third larger than any equine heart I'd ever seen. And it wasn't pathologically enlarged. All the chambers and the valves were normal. It was just larger. I think it told us why he was able to do what he did."

Secretariat had a heart worth its weight in gold.

The story of Secretariat began with the toss of a coin in 1968 between Christopher Chenery of Meadow Stables and Ogden Phipps of Wheatley Stable. The idea of a coin toss came from Phipps, the owner of Bold Ruler, and Bull Hancock of Claiborne Farms as a way to get the very best mares for Bold Ruler, and when the toss went their way, to add well-bred fillies to their own broodmare band. Bold Ruler was considered one of the important stallions of his time. He could carry weight and go distances like no other horse. After his racing career, Bold Ruler was retired to Claiborne Farms but still was controlled by the Phipps family. This meant he would be bred to mainly Phipps' mares and not many of his offspring would find their way to the auction ring. Phipps and Hancock agreed to forego a stud fee for Bold Ruler in exchange for getting to keep one of two foals produced by the mare he bred in successive seasons or two mares he bred in the same season. Who obtained which foal or even received first pick would be decided by a flip of a coin.

In 1968, Chenery sent two mares named Hasty Matelda and Somethingroyal to Bold Ruler, and in 1969, a colt and filly were the result. In 1969, Hasty Matelda was replaced by Cicada, but she did not conceive. Only one foal resulted between Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal. As stated in the original agreement, the winner of the coin toss could pick the foal he wanted but could only take one, while the loser would get the other two. Both parties assumed Somethingroyal would deliver a healthy foal in the spring of 1970. The coin toss between Penny Chenery and Ogden Phipps was set for the fall of 1969 in the office of New York Racing Association Chairman Alfred Vanderbilt II with Hancock as witness. As Vanderbilt flipped the coin, Phipps called "Tails!" The coin landed tails up. Phipps decided to take the weanling filly out of Somethingroyal, leaving Chenery with the colt out of Hasty Matelda and the unborn foal of Somethingroyal.

On March 30, just ten minutes past midnight, Somethingroyal foaled a bright red chestnut colt with three white socks and a star with a narrow blaze. Almost immediately, the colt was thought to be too pretty, a title that would haunt him early in his racing career and then earn him fame for his beauty as a Triple Crown winner. By the time the colt was a yearling, he still was without a name. Meadow's secretary, Elizabeth Ham, had submitted ten names to the Jockey Club, and all ten were denied for one reason or another. Approval finally came with the eleventh submission, a name Ham herself picked from a previous career association, Secretariat.

    The Triple Crown

    The Kentucky Derby

Nicknamed Big Red, he won the Kentucky Derby by gradually moving up on the field in the backstretch, then overtaking rival Sham in the middle of the dash for home. Making Secretariat's Derby win more impressive is that Sham's time of 1:59 4/5 would have won any other running of the Kentucky Derby, before or since.

A lesser-known but perhaps more incredible accomplishment of his took place in that year's Derby. On his way to a still-standing record time in that race (1:59 2/5), he achieved the unheard-of feat of "negative splitting", running each quarter-mile (402 m) segment faster than the one before it. The successive quarter-mile times were: ''25 1/5, 24, 23 4/5, 23 2/5 and 23.

    The Preakness Stakes

Secretariat didn't wait long to make his presence known in the Preakness. In last place as the horses moved past the stands, Big Red made a big leap forward on the first turn. CBS Television sportscaster Chic Anderson:

But HERE comes Secretariat, he's moving fast, and he's going to the outside he's going for the lead and it's right NOW he's looking for it!
Despite constant left-handed whipping by jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., Sham could not overtake Secretariat, who won by two and a half lengths. The main controversy of the race was its time. The infield flashed a time of 1:55. The Pimlico clocker had informed them that he had clocked a time of 1:54 2/5, while at the same time two Daily Racing Form veterans had clocked it 1:53 2/5 which was faster than the track record (1:54 by Caonero II). Two tapes of the horses were played side by side and were reclocked and slowly examined and Secretariat got to the finish line first on tape. The Maryland Jockey Club discarded both electronic and The DRF time and went with 1:54 2/5 as the official time. In some programs, both DRF and official time are printed.
    * In 1999, the Maryland Racing Commission finally awarded Secretariat his rightful time of 1:53 2/5, thus setting the original race record in 1973.

    The Belmont Stakes

Secretariat's statue at Belmont ParkOnly four horses joined Secretariat for the June 9, 1973, running of the Belmont Stakes, including Sham, who had finished second in both the Derby and Preakness. With so few horses in the race, and with Secretariat expected to win, no "show" bets were taken. Before a crowd of 67,605, both horses set a blistering early pace, opening a 10-length cushion on the others. But while Sham faded after the halfway mark (ultimately finishing last), Secretariat astonished spectators by picking up the killing pace eventually straining the television cameras' wide-angle capability as they struggled to keep the distant challengers in the same frame. Turcotte has said in documentaries that he could sense the horse wanted to be let loose, and he did so, letting the horse shift into "high gear" and run his own race.

In one of the best-known of American sports calls, Anderson later Belmont Park's track announcer punctuated Secretariat's powerful move on the final turn of the Belmont this way:

...Secretariat is blazing along! The first three-quarters of a mile in 1:09 and four fifths. Secretariat is widening now! He is moving like a TREMENDOUS machine! Secretariat by 12, Secretariat by 14 lengths on the turn! Sham is dropping back. It looks like they'll catch him today, as My Gallant and Twice a Prince are both coming up to him now. But Secretariat is all alone! He's out there almost a 16th of a mile away from the rest of the horses! Secretariat is in a position that seems impossible to catch. He's into the stretch. Secretariat leads this field by 18 lengths, and now Twice a Prince has taken second and My Gallant has moved back to third. They're in the stretch. Secretariat has opened a 22-length lead! He is going to be the Triple Crown winner! Here comes Secretariat to the wire. An unbelievable, an amazing performance! He hits the finish 25 lengths in front!"

In fact, the champion's winning margin was 31 lengths a distance it took careful examination of videotape and trackside photographs to measure. During Anderson's call of the stretch run, the CBS camera had to pull back to keep both Big Red and his opponents in the frame, and as a result caught a poignant image in TV sports history the backs of tens of thousands of cheering Belmont Park spectators cheering and applauding as Secretariat neared the wire. Almost as iconic as the still and video images of Secretariat blowing away the competition was the scene of owner Penny Chenery Tweedy waving her arms in exultation (and relief) in the Belmont owners' boxes. Anderson:

An amazing, unbelievable performance by this miracle horse and look at Mrs. Tweedy! (laughing) She's having the time of her life!
Secretariat's stride at the finish was so powerful that it took jockey Ron Turcotte nearly two furlongs to pull him up. His winning margin of 31 lengths in the long and grueling Belmont Stakes is remembered as one of the most dramatic events in thoroughbred racing history and one of the most incredible individual athletic achievements ever, both human and non-human. Time Magazine, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated featured Secretariat on their covers on June 11, 1973, the first to be featured on all three magazines' covers in the same week. Nobody expected the pure and absolute domination that Secretariat exhibited. If the Beyer Speed Figure calculation had been developed during that time, Andrew Beyer calculated that Secretariat would have earned a figure of 139, a figure that hasn't been touched before or since. [1] Bettors holding 5,617 winning on-course Tote tickets have never redeemed them.

    Final race

After three more victories and two second-place finishes in 1973, Secretariat won his last race with another impressive performance. With jockey Ron Turcotte out with a five-day suspension, Eddie Maple rode Secretariat to victory in the Canadian International Stakes on grass and against older horses. He won the race by an impressive 6 1/2 lengths.

Altogether, Secretariat won 16 of his 21 career races and finished out of the money just once in his debut as a 2-year-old, when he was jostled coming out of the gate and finished fourth.

    Honors and retirement

Secretariat was voted the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year, the most prestigious honor in racing, both as a two-year-old (the first horse so honored at that age) and as a three-year-old. Secretariat demonstrated his superiority on grass with a win in the Canadian International Stakes against the best horses his age and older from around the world. His performance on grass earned him the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Male Turf Horse.

His race records in the Derby and the Belmont stand to this day; his run in the Belmont is not only a race record but the world record for a mile and a half (2.4 km) on a dirt track. He set a new speed record in each of the Triple Crown races, the only horse in history to do so (although, as noted earlier, he was not officially recognized as the Preakness record holder until 1999).

ESPN listed Secretariat 35th of the 100 greatest athletes of the 20th century, one of three non-humans on the list.

In 1974, Secretariat was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Secretariat became a beloved figure with fans and non-fans of horse racing coming to see Big Red at Claiborne farm, where he stood at stud from 1974 through 1989, living in the same stall which was once home to his sire, Bold Ruler. Secretariat sired a substantial number of major stakes winners, including 1986 Horse of the Year Lady's Secret, 1988 Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Risen Star, and the 1990 Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule, who still holds the race record. His "failure"[citation needed] as a stallion was mostly due to his inability to produce offspring as great as he was an unrealistic expectation, even for a truly great horse. He sired as many as 600 foals during his retirement.

His blood flows through many other notable racehorses, including 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones, and he is most noted as a broodmare sire, being the broodmare sire of 1992 Horse of the Year and successful sire A.P. Indy, Secretariat's grandson through his daughter Weekend Surprise, who was sired by another Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew. Secretariat is also the dam-sire of the great stallions Storm Cat (by Storm Bird), through his daughter Terlingua, and of Gone West, through his daughter Secrettame.

In the fall of 1989, Secretariat was afflicted with laminitis, a painful and often incurable hoof condition. His condition failed to improve, and he was euthanized on October 4. He is buried at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. In death, he received the ultimate honor for a horse he was buried whole. By tradition, the only parts of a Thoroughbred buried are their head (to symbolize intelligence), heart (to symbolize strength), and legs (to symbolize power).

Before his burial, he was necropsied at the University of Kentucky; Dr. Thomas Swerczek, the veterinarian who performed the necropsy, found that Secretariat's heart was the largest he had ever seen in a horse approximately twice the size of a normal horse's heart. Dr. Swerczek states in correspondence:

"Certainly, after performing autopsies on several thousand thoroughbred horses, including mares and stallions, no other horse came close to Secretariats heart size. The second largest heart I found was the heart of Sham, who actually broke the Kentucky derby record, but still lost to Secretariat. Shams heart weighed 19 pounds. The third largest heart I found was stallion Key to the Mint, which was 16 pounds. The majority of all others were smaller, in the range of 10 to 12 pounds. Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat had an average size heart. The heart size seemingly is inherited from the female side of the pedigree. When I performed the autopsy on Secretariat, which was necessary because of insurance and we needed to determine the cause of the laminitis, the cause of destruction, I did a cosmetic autopsy. The reason being I did not want to dismantle such a remarkable specimen and the farm personnel and handlers were present to immediately collect all organs in large plastic bags which were immediately returned to the farm to be buried with the body. Normally, with other horses we can keep all organs and the body for further study, or to preserve large specimens, like the heart, but I was not allowed to do this with Secretariat. For this reason, all specimens were immediately collected and returned to the farm, and I did not get a chance to weigh the heart. However, by comparing it to numerous other hearts I got actual weights on, I am certain the weight was between 21 to 22 pounds. So I considered the heart weight officially as 21 pounds. The heart was in perfect shape, not diseased in any way, but just considerably larger than any other horses I autopsied." (see reference below)

A normal heart size for a Thoroughbred is 8 pounds. The great New Zealand race horse, Phar Lap, had a heart size of 14 pounds. This new information led the way for new research to be conducted on factors leading up to great thoroughbreds and the size of their hearts. Known as the X-factor, it leads to an enlarged heart size being given by the dam to her foal, even as she acquired it from her sire. This is why Secretariat was such a valuable broodmare sire. He passed on the X-gene to his daughters, who in turn passed it on to their offspring.

On October 16, 1999, in the winner's circle at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, the United States Postal Service honored the great horse, unveiling a 33-cent postage stamp with his image.

In 2005, Secretariat appeared once more in ESPN Classic's show Who's No. 1?. In the list of "Greatest Sports Performances" (by individual athletes), the horse was the only non-human on the list, his run at Belmont ranking second behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game.

As he came to the Belmont Stakes in June 1973 with a chance to become the first Triple Crown winner in a quarter of a century, Secretariat led the news headlines in North America. The Big Red Horse made the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated - something that hadn't happened before, or since.

In his book "The Most Glorious Crown," author Marvin Drager rounded up several clips from the millions of words printed about the Big Red Horse. Some writers, perhaps more used to human newsmakers, struggled a bit to define what was so phenomenal about Secretariat.

"He has a neck like a buffalo, a back as broad as a sofa," Time magazine reported. But Newsweek sports columnist Pete Axthelm, who never saw a racetrack he did not wish to attend, glided across the typing turf.

"Secretariat generates a crackling tension and excitement wherever he goes," Axthelm wrote. "Even in the kind of gray weather that shrouds lesser animals in anonymity, Secretariat's muscular build identifies him immediately; his glowing reddish coat is a banner of health and rippling power. Magnificent enough at rest ... when he accelerates ... he produces a breathtaking explosion that leaves novices and hardened horsemen alike convinced that, for one of those moments that seldom occur in any sport, they have witnessed genuine greatness."

While Axthelm was waxing poetic, pithy New York Post columnist Larry Merchant (now better known as HBO's sharp-tongued boxing analyst) clicked off his words in Broadway staccato:

"Secretariat," said Merchant, "is the kind of Big Horse that makes grown men weep, even when they are flint-hearted bettors, even when he goes off at 1-10. He is the apparently unflawed hunk of beauty and beast they search for doggedly in the racing charts every day, and never seemed to find. His supporters rhapsodize over him as though he is a four-legged Nureyev, extolling virtues of his musculature, his grace, his urine specimens." If he were to lose the Belmont, Merchant warned, "the country may turn sullen and mutinous."

The media explosion over Secretariat set an interesting benchmark in the coverage of horse racing. While the sport has never since enjoyed quite the fervor and anticipation in the press as it enjoyed in Secretariat's run up to the 1973 Triple Crown, the nation's media DID learn in that year how to turn out The Big Story about a horse racing hero. We've seen that this spring of 2003, as the New York-bred gelding Funny Cide made a run for glory in the Triple Crown.

In no way whatsoever are the stories of Secretariat and Funny Cide alike. They are horses from opposite sides of the railroad track. But if one was Equine Royalty, and the other is Equine Everyman, that's just part of the story that makes headlines.

Alex, sounds like you had quite a morning! I hope you are feeling better as the day goes on, never a dull moment! ha
May all of the horses be safe in the races and good luck to all of them.
I was busy yesterday faxing all of the committee members and Senators about how important HR503 and S311 are and that our American Horses will not be completely protected until these laws are passed. It is too long to post on here, but I put everything I had into it, so hopefully it will do some good.
The Plaque of Barbaro from the FOB's to Dr. Richardson is just beautiful and so heartfelt. Thanks to Dr. Richardson he helped Barbaro in all ways possible to stay with us as long as possible. May there be a cure for lamitis in the near future, God bless Dr. Richardson and the Bolten Center for helping to save lives.
You all have a wonderful weekend!

Barb AZ - Just posted again on your blog. That's very cool - as is the fact that you have dragged me kicking and screaming into the 21st century with this blog nonsense!! (Teasing!)
Safe trips to all horses today, and wings on their heels.
Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

    Hi Susan E.,
I suggest sticking to an organic cat food brand to be sure you're not getting something yucky, at least 'till all this passes. The ugliness of mass produced pet foods is really surfacing. Maybe this will push them to clean up their act!

I don't really know why he came in last. I watched that race a few times. I think he just wasn't having the type of day to want to run. He seemed almost in slow motion there for awhile......

Lava Man :-( I feel bad about him but am greatful that he is OK and cooling down.... Hey look at it this way... To even GET entered into the World Cup a horse has to be one of the best in the world..... Lava Man is surly in that catagorie or he wouldn't have even been there in the first place..............

As much as I would have liked to see Lava Man win, I did not want to see him running in Dubai. Sounds like it was the owner's decision -- not the trainer's. I remember Frank Whitely being overruled by the owners of Damascus many years ago. Damascus was trucked off the track with a bowed tendon and obviously never raced again. I pray Lava Man gets home safely and in sound condition.

Great win by Invasor and Premium Tap, too!

    Hope Lava Man is OK!!

No breakdowns at Dubai? Anyone know...seems like everyone has come home safe....wouldn't that be nice. Nerve wracking.............................

    WOW, INVASOR!!!!!!

Posted by: jonna at March 31, 2007 9:20 PM

JONNA - didn't seem to be any breakdowns, thanks be to God - now we have to wait and see how all the horse come out from their races...especially those who were expected to do much better than actually happened!

I am VERY PROUD of my pal Premium Tap - he led almost from the start, and has nothing to be ashamed of in being bested by Invasor...good boy!!

    WOW...
Boy if your gonna race thats a nice place to do it. I agree, I would have loved to see M&M Jackson and Dr. R.
That commercial tho. I know now, I will never be over Barbaro. I thought I would to a degree. But it will never happen. There may be other great horses, but there will never be another Barbaro.
Hope Lava Man & DC are ok, they really fell off.
Congratulations to Invasor and all the others who won today.
You guys will have to keep me posted on the FL. Derby, Can't get it and with dial up, watching will be imposable.

By the way, I too should have stayed away from this website. Alex posted the World Cup winner before ABC aired it! Oh well. I hope Discreet Cat is ok.
Looks like Lava Man would run better in a different type of race (shorter, dirt?).

Posted by: SabrinaS at March 31, 2007 9:31 PM

Almost forgot. Thought Premium Tap was outstanding and gave Invasor a run for his money. Only thing missing was that infamous flapping tongue. Here's rooting for Chelokee

    Sylvia,

Yes, per your checking the facts, Lava Man is a gelding.

And re: Premium Tap's tongue - at the very end of the ABC broadcast, they were showing Invasor & Premium Tap in slow motion coming to the wire, and lo and behold, you could see Premium Tap's tongue wagging way out as usual!!

Congrats to Invasor! Hope all the others who did not do as well in all the races are healthy and OK.

And congrats to Kelly's Landing! I have been following him for a while and was thrilled to see that win!

    Anybody-------

Stupid question, but do they have special storage(for the lack of a better word) to house the horses on the plane, and is there a crew to watch over them during the flight?

Posted by: Cal at March 31, 2007 10:01 PM

Premium Tap had a devil of a time getting in the gate, which (to me) makes his performance the more impressive...he obviously settled down well after much struggling to get him in the gate!

And Edgar Prado just won AGAIN on A.P. Arrow - that's 5 wins and a place in 10 races - great day, Edgar...although I'm not sure I can cheer for you on Scat Daddy!

    Good Afternoon Everyone!
I'm sooo glad to see that all of the runners today have come out of their races safely. I pray that those that still haven't run yet today are safe...all those across the Rainbow Bridge please keep them safe.

I saw one of the races from Dubai before I left for work today. My wife and I were watching and we saw the Barbaro Fund commercial. She got goosebumps and, well, I cried. That is the best commercial ever made. With God's blessing, and this commercial, laminitis will be defeated soon. How can it not be!

In the World Cup I couldn't help myself with the tears AGAIN!!!!! Every commercial was all of the Champs and at the end Barbaro.... with Doc. I made it through a few of them but that was a very strong message..........

Love you Barbaro with all my heart........ You are on TV so much today... Man they are talking about you right now and I am about ready to break down but I WILL get through this......There will always only be ONE Barbaro and it surly appears from watching TV today that out of all of the Champs, you seem to be on top........ :-)

Nina; That's a big possibility. As far as Chelokee goes for the Derby, Alex, maybe you can help, is it not determined by how much money each horse has acculmulated in the prep races that decides Derby entrants????

Missed all of the TV coverage of the Dubai racing...had horses to tend to. Hope none of them were killed at the track and all were safe afterwards. Just wondering if anyone can tell me...since the UAE is a muslim country in the mideast, were any precautions taken to protect against islamic terror attacks? and how do the women there get by without wearing the head covering and full burka?

Posted by: Tricia G at March 31, 2007 11:08 PM

Jeannine: great coverage of the Dubai Cup! Wow, Invasor looks like a superhorse. I'm disappointed for Lava Man and his connections. Just hope he comes out of the race healthy and has a safe trip home.

Maybe there should be a warning post: don't read if you don't want to know the results when there's a time delay with TV coverage. In some ways it was ok to know in advance - there wasn't as much as of a letdown when Lava Man didn't run well. Of course, I could have just stayed off the Board until later, too!

I agree with Verna and others who commented on the NTRA Ride with Barbaro commercial. I choked up every time!

Glad for Edgar and especially for Michael Matz that Chelokee did pretty well.

Edgar wouldn't have let Chelokee come close to that rail and I agree 100%...... Chelokee and Edgar together, Chelokee would have won that without a doubt.......

Posted by: Nina at March 31, 2007 11:12 PM

If Edgar was up on Chelokee today..no doubt they would have won!!! I don't know if 3rd is good enough for the derby...I think he had to be 1st or 2nd..but soooooo impressive. Team Matz you sure know how to train 'em!!!!

Posted by: Leigh in Austin,TX at March 31, 2007 11:16 PM

This race improved Chelokee's chances to get into the Derby. The field is limited to 20 entrants; if there are more than 20, entry is determined by the amount of money earned in graded stakes. He looked good finishing, having been blocked then swinging wide and charging. Congrats to Mr. Matz, Mr. Prado and Chelokee!

I think it's wonderful that we've all come together-all because of Barbaro-winner of the 2006 Florida Derby.......

Posted by: Remi at March 31, 2007 11:19 PM

OK I just watched that race again. Edgar for sure pulled the Barbaro move going around the final turn. That was very very similar. Chelokee got pushed out of the way from what I saw by Stormello. I am not sure but it looked that way. Then he lost his beat (that was very critical). That is when Edgar took the lead and Chelokee dropped down 3rd..... Now I feel that it was one wrong stride that made the difference on this race. It was no doubt the rail...... Too close......

He did remarakbly well though...... Should have won IMO still............

While rooting for Chelokee, I always feel torn if Edgar is in the same race. Not only is he a fantastic jockey, but he has such a heart for the horses. It comforts me to know that he was the one riding Barbaro that day.

Watching races is still bittersweet, but I feel I need the training for the KD. Champ I saw you everywhere I looked.

Alex Good Night to you and all...it was a great race and I really felt wonderful when one of the commentators said that just because Barbaro won the Florida Derby last year..don't expect the horse that won today to do what Barbaro did..because he was a one of a kind horse and we probably wont see one like him in a long time! I really felt good about that remark because there wasn't enough Barbaro comments today on HRTV for me to be satisfied!!! I really expected Adore The Gold to do something better than he did..but he wont be 3 until the end of May...He has some growing to do...but he is a "looker"! Congrats to Edgar and to Doug O'Neill for their wins! It was a fun day at the races!!

Hi....just a question out of curiousity.......at what point in time is a decision made to geld a horse. Also....when is it time for a filly to become a mare and get pregnant. Is there some rule of thumb for this. Tnx Ellie Az

At lunch today I was explaining about all the races leading up to the KD, the horses who are running and what was going on in Dubai at the races. My husband looked at me and said "when did you learn all of this"?

    elie,

I thought someone said a filly becomes a mare at age 5. Am I correct? Maybe there is an answer in Alex's FAQ's.

Posted by: MJ at April 1, 2007 12:24 AM

    ### ellie

OK I have to answer this. MJ is right about the filly becoming a mare at age 5. RE: the Gelding that one is like a year or when-ever the owners decide they don't want babies. I had an Arabian and a mare and I looked into the pasture one day and said "dad why is Pepper on top of Midge"? LOL my dad said "time to call the vet". Well the next day I came home from school and sure enough Pepper was no longer a colt but a gelding....... I think it goes like this....

Every horse turns a year older in January of every year.

A filly becomes a mare at age 5.

A colt becomes a stallion at age 5.

A gelding is a gelding when you know what is removed.

Anyway..... there was one question about a gelding becoming a horse and the answer to that is a gelding is never a horse, he is always a gelding.... I think I am right.... If I am wrong, it won't be the first or the last time.......:-)

    Cheers

Tricia G. raised some good points. Let's not forget Dubai is a Muslim country and we have a little problem in the Mideast right now. NY Sun had a piece this week about the anti-semitism in Dubai. And practicing Christianity there is problematic. There are a couple of American trainers who probably would not even be allowed in the country. Let's hope and pray everyone and our horses get out of there alive before we go to war with Iran. God Bless. In memory of my seven co-workers killed on 9-11.

BARBARO, sweet spirit horse...you were in all our hearts and minds today as we watched the Florida Derby. You would have been so proud of your "frens" Edgar and Michael - earlier in the day they teamed up for a WIN, and Edgar won the Florida Derby just like he did with you last year, and Michael's Chelokee came in third even though he was badly tied up on the rail and the commentators were unsure whether he "belonged" in this race...but you know about all this, don't you? Your picture was all over the television screen today advertising the fundraiser to stamp out laminitis...it made me cry to see your perfection, it makes me smile to know that you are now returned to that perfection!

I'd love to sing a special song for you, but my singing would give you a tummyache, so I'll just send you the words...Can you feel the love tonight?

"There's a calm surrender to the rush of day
When the heat of the rolling world can be turned away
An enchanted moment, and it sees me through
It's enough for this restless warrior just to be with you.

And can you feel the love tonight?
    It is where we are,
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
    That we got this far.
And can you feel the love tonight?
    How it's laid to rest
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
    Believe the very best.

There's a time for everyone if they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn.
There's a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager beats in time with yours.

FOREVER IN MY HEART, FOREVER IN MY MIND, FOREVER IN MY SOUL - I love you, Barbaro!

Is your filly gettinig restless at all for you? Remember Hope about the bedtime snack, okay? If it helps your filly, it helps you...

Hope, you know all of your caregivers...they are just some of your loved ones...tonight you will be going on an adventure to visit ALL of your loved ones! (MaryL. in Ohio and her daughter better get to bed...they're going to get a visitor tonight in their dreams.)

I would like to think and I believe I am right that in this world the acts of a few do not represent the whole, despite the fact "the few" get more media coverage. I would also like to think that we can rise above our perceived prejudices and wish well to our fellow man and woman. Doing that makes us bigger in heart. It's easy to make someone your enemy, let us try harder to make someone our friend.

Just got a chance to read this months Equus.

There is an article about Barbaro and all of funds being set up to honor him. Next to this article was a short article on the anti-slaughter ruling by U.S Court of Appeals. On next page was the story of the rescue of over 90 horses here in Georgia.

Everyone involved with Barbaro including this site and the FOBs should be proud. And of course there is Barbaro the horse that started it all. He was a great racehorse but his legacy is so much bigger than that.

And yes I cried when I read the article and saw his picture. It caught me off guard.

In case any of you missed my post this morning about the RECALLED DRY CAT FOOD, here it is again: Hills Prescription Feline M/D DRY has been recalled. It is given primarily to diabetic cats, including my Mickey, but fortunately he has not shown any ill effects. However, I have taken it away from him. This is the ONLY DRY CAT FOOD to be involved in the recall. For any other diabetic kitty 'parents' out there, my vet has recommended Purina Prescription DM which I have to go hunt down tomorrow..........This recall does not include the canned Feline M/D so at least poor Mick has something to eat.... This news was like a kick in the stomach because I thought we were safe being on a prescription diet. Guess not! Prayers for all the furkids who are ill due to this horrible problem.

CONGRATULATIONS, SCAT DADDY for the win in the FL Derby! Barbaro was betting on you!
And CONGRATULATIONS, INVASOR, for your win in Dubai. You're quite the man!

    Laurie H,
Thank you so much for the beautiful tuck-in. Most nights I can't get here in time to comment, but maybe tonight I can to tell you that I never miss them and look for them at the end of every day. I so wish I still had little ones to read them to. Maybe someday I'll have a book to read to my future grandchildren?? Hint, hint!!! I know alot of people have been asking for you to compile them. I took some time one afternoon to go back and read your tuck-ins that you wrote over a long stretch of months. It was very bittersweet to be reading your early ones before we lost our Barbaro, and sometimes hard to read, but they are so beautiful and inspriring and comforting.
I will always dream of Barbaro and picture him perfect and healed, and tucked-in at night, too. I am also praying for Hope to have a safe delivery of her foal, and for Rosie and Misty as they are getting ready to foal.
I've been away for 2 days and still no foal for Rosie yet and Alex's leg is still sore. Thank you for taking care of Hawty Creek. I think she might be a favorite of Alex. We need some good news and we need it soon. Thank you so much for the love and comforting words that you send to all of us each night.

CJ - great article indeed! This was an intriguing phrase..."an illegal scheme of the U.S. Department of Agriculture"

Posted by: Nancy in CT at April 1, 2007 2:03 AM

[except from Sneed's column referenced above]

    It's simple.

    March 30, 2007

    BY MICHAEL SNEED Sun-Times Columnist

It's called pet 'em, whack 'em and eat 'em and it's barbaric.

Translation: Butchering a pet for human consumption should be a crime, and it's been going on at the Cavel slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Ill. It began butchering horses for European dinner tables 20 years ago.

That was until 8 a.m. Thursday, when common sense took over.

That was when the controversial plant was ordered to cease killing horses for human consumption by a U.S. district court in Washington, D.C.

Translation: The grisly slaughter of 4,000 pets, race horses, colts, wild horses each month for human consumption in Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy is over for now.

Further translation: But the plant, the only one of its kind now operating in the United States, plans to appeal. (Two plants in Texas were shut down earlier this year by a Texas court.)

"It is a barbaric practice, and the shutting down of the Cavel plant is a tremendous victory for humane advocates across the country," said Jonathan Lovvorn, chief litigating officer for the U.S. Humane Society.

"It is now up to the U.S. Congress to pass final legislation to end this practice for good."

"Approximately 100,000 horses last year have gone to slaughter under an illegal scheme of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It's an enormous breach of our trust to send companion animals to slaughter."

The Cavel side: "I think it's a terrible decision," said James Tucker, Cavel's general manager. "I think it's a vast disservice to the horse industry and most horse owners.

"Without this option it means that some people won't be able to dispose of their animals as they see fit -- a small group of people has contrived to shut down an industry."

Tucker claims the plant will process the meat "we have from horses that were processed before today."

His concern: "Fifty-five people could be out of work if our appeal doesn't work."

Hmmm. Fifty-five people who listen to the sounds of frightened animals sliding in their blood. Fifty-five people who watch the agony of man's companion animals being slaughtered to put on a European table.

Background: Congress took away federal funds going to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to inspect the plants because they didn't want horses going to slaughter for human consumption. "The USDA tried to work around that by issuing a rule allowing the plants to pay for USDA inspection," said Lovvorn. "What just happened is the U.S. district court said nope. It is illegal for them to pay the USDA inspectors ... and the plant can't operate without USDA inspection."

    Great job.

    Bravo.

Addendum: By the way, here is a list of gutless state reps who were responsible for tanking the state's Horse Slaughter Ban bill in 2004. If they reside in your district, you might want to send them a message next time you enter the voting booth: Patricia Bailey, Patricia Bellock, Mike Boland, John Bradley, Dan Brady, Daniel Burke, Lee Daniels, Jack McGuire, Charles Morrow, Ed Sullivan Jr. and Arthur Turner voted "No" -- and James Brosnahan, Marlow Colvin, John Fritchey, Paul Froehlich and Calvin Giles were either excused or didn't vote.

    I'll Wait For You

I got to the gate of heaven today,
    After we said goodbye.
I began to miss you terribly,
    Because I heard you cry.
    Suddenly there was an angel,
And she asked me to enter heaven's gate.
I asked her if I could stay outside
For someone who would be late.
I wouldn't make much noise you see,
    I wouldn't whinney or neigh.
    I'll only wait here patiently,
    And quietly munch my hay.
The angel said I could stay right here
And wait for you to come.
Because heaven just wouldn't be heaven
    If I went in alone.
So, I'll wait right here, you take your time,
    I won't go in while we're apart.
Because heaven just wouldn't be heaven
So, just keep me in your heart.

I was watching the stretch run when Invasor showed what he is made of, on the ABC presentation (and I had not peeked here) - and I want to tell you I was groaning and yelling so that my partner's wife could hear me through her floor/my ceiling. I must say that seeing how that horse looked before, during and after the race, I am really impressed. Truly has "the look" - the bearing, demeanor, we all know it when we see it (haha, like that old Supreme Court Justice's opinion about pornography; impossible to define, but "I know it when I see it.")

As Michael Matz so succinctly and sincerely put it, in essence, there was and is and likely never will be, another one to compare with Barbaro.

But among the living, I daresay this Invasor is one of the most favored few.

(I hope I do not ruffle any feathers with these observations; I love and revere Barbaro no less for my admiration of another worthy one.)

    ##########
Interesting about the name Invasor - it's shared with an Olympic horse. I noticed in a current horse magazine, a magnificant white Spanish horse with the same name. The Pura Raza Espanola (P.R.E.) horse is a registered breed with the Spanish studbook in Spain. see www.prehorse.org "P.R.E. horse Invasor, ridden by Rafael Soto, helped capture team silver for Spain during the 2004 Opympic Games." OK One last time....

Fans of Barbaro. I hope everyone had fun today with all of the races and the tears were there I am sure.. There was soooooooooo much of Barbaro. I'll have to say that it is only the tip of the iceberg. I think that there will be more and more Barbaro as the days and races go on. We have to be strong and just cry through it.. It is OK to cry cause that shows real honest love for our wonderful colt......

#Cheryl I had to pull Butters food. I made her some rice with this protien stuff that my nutritional doc gives ME for my health. It is a cleanser for the liver and internal orgins.... It is all organic. It is expensive but a few scoops in some rice and she will get her protien, cleanse out whatever and when all of thid re-call stuff slows down, I will buy her some food...........

    # Nancy... I hope you got into the races. I think if you watch them you will see that Chelokee should have won that race. Not anything at all against Edgar and I am glad he won but I feel he was on the wrong horse. Sigh........

###Alex.. Your probably beat..... Take it easy tonight and enjoy the evening. You surly deserve it. Hope your leg is getting better......

All horses that raced today..... Whether you won or didn't, it matters none. All that really and truly matters is that you are all OK and safe. Same to the jockeys.........

Edgar.... You are amazing...... I go for you on Chelokee and I feel it would be a win cause you would have Chelokee on the right side of the track LOL......... :-)

Love to all and Barbaro........ You know you are the center of attention all over the word right now and rightly so.......... We will prevail and we will do it for you big buddy.... Thanks for putting angles on all the backs of the horses and keeping everyone safe.... I have a huntch that you had a hoof in that...... :-) Love to all................. Nina...........

    Derby Nomination eligibility rules: http://www.churchilldowns.com/racing_information/horsemen/stakes_nominations_forms/2007kyderbynf.pdf
So, a graded stakes win is important in eligibility and money earned when the field is going to exceed 20, which it always seems to.

I am so sorry I didn't highlight the pertinent parts, just so darn tired today.
Nina, A filly becomes a mare at four
A colt becomes a horse at four, a gelding also becomes a horse at four since most still refer to three year olds as colts even if they have been castrated . Those are U.S. rules, as we all know by now, different rules apply in the U.K. , Australia, etc.

My HRTV disappeared from my DirecTV, so I didn't get to see one thing before I went out! :(

Barb, what's the score? Are you still winning over Chunky?

OK yeah OK I remember now a colt does become a HORSE at four.. Now when does that horse become a stallion?????

A gelding is a gelding and a stallion is the other...all horse...with and without

    Chunky/Punky update:

We've held Chunky to one [painful] point. The rest of the points go to us!

We had Chunky and Punky out today. Heidi sat on the pony (Chunky has always been hers--they were raised together!) while I messed with Punky. We got the way-too-big foal halter on Punky, and at first she fought it. Even with extra holes, it hags on her. But she got the idea, anyway.

We've had visitors EVERY DAY. My husband said we should charge admission!

Punky HAS GROWN A BUNCH! She's at least one hand (four inches) taller. She is now 10 days old. What a cutie! We just thank our lucky stars EVERY DAY!

    Thanks for asking.

    RE CHELOKEE:

Mike Matz' next phone call should be to GARRETT GOMEZ. Send him video of the last 2 races Chelokee ran and say to him, keep him OFF THE RAIL , go wide on the turn and win the Kentucky Derby.
What a terible ride he got AGAIN. Dominguez tried to save ground on the rail and THATS what got him beat again. Chelokee looks like an Alysheba to me. He needs a clear launching pad to accelerate and GARRETT GOMEZ is the man for this horse..
If Chelokee qualifies with earnings and they decide to go to Louisville, GOMEZ will get them the roses.

CJ-great article re HS. Thanks for sharing.

Alex-thanks for the updates. I knew there had to be an explanation for Discreet Cat's performance. But if he had trouble breathing, wouldn't the jockey be able to tell? And, in that case, wouldn't he have been pulled up immediately instead of made to run the race in discomfort?

The article that you posted on the updates mentioned that his throat was scoped earlier this week. Wouldn't the results have come back before the race or maybe the results weren't conclusive.

    Thanks.

Yes, I agree MikeC. After watching Chelokee's race again it was clear he was trapped on the rail with no where to go. They had to stear him so wide and he lost a lot of ground. What I was imrpressed with is how he accelerated down the strech once he had some running room. Chelokee would have easily been second and probably first if he had a better trip. It sounds like his jockey feels bad though, I guess he should.

In my Derby nomination thing, I sent the form LOL and meant to say, the field max is 20, but certainly a lot more are entered, and that is where graded stakes wins play an important part. If you watched PA Bred Hard Spun win, that was his passport in. And money won.
Chelokee didn't have much in the win/earnings column, which is why they may have been saying that, after my "Lemon Drop Kid" fiasco, I NEVER say a horse doesn't belong....any given race!
It is a beautiful morning, and I hope it is for all family. But as Michael M. himself said:
Matz, who trained Barbaro, said he doesn't think Chelokee will have enough graded stakes earnings to qualify if more than 20 horses are entered in the Derby.

    Mary L,
Thank you. I'll keep that forever.

    Love,
    Susan

Posted by: SusanW at April 1, 2007 2:41 PM

I read an article this morning where Michael Matz said he didn't think Chelokee's third place finish was enough to qualify in graded stakes earnings. I sure hope he's wrong. Chelokee belongs in the Kentucky Derby.

Posted by: Ashley at April 1, 2007 2:42 PM

MIKEC; Gosh, we need to get some more money in Chelokee's bank acct!!!!! Why can't his jockey's see that he can stay on the outside and still win????

    ## Alex hows the leg?

    ## Verna hows sis?

##Cheryl.... Man this pet-food recall is getting totally out of hand. I am scared to get her anything until it calms down...I have been feeing her rice with protien liver detoxing stuff in it and she should be getting all the nurtients that she needs from that for awhile.. This Bio-Cleanse is what MY nurtitional doctor gave me to take for a meal supplement when I needed t detoxify things...... Sooooooooo if Butters has anything wrong, (she appears OK) then she this will probably help....

    #### Alex... Is Chelokee home yet? I still really wish that had been Edgar on that horse.

You know I sit here and I think about Edgar and Scat Daddy winning that race JUST like that far turn that he did with Barbaro. Just think... Can you imagine the thoughts that go through his mind on a day where he won a year a go with Barbaro and now in this last race, a dfferent horse but the same type of win..... Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh it would not surpirse me one bit if Edgar wins AGAIN the KD and does it the same way...... That would be a mind blower to some but we all would "get it" cause we all know that Barbaro was with Edgar yesterday aye???????

BARBARO........ There are a lot of champions that have done remarkable things but you my dear have done all of that and more..... You have done what no other horse has ever done.... You are winning that race that needed to be ran a long long time ago............ Thank-You for being the brave brave loving horse that you are and making the decision to run that 7th race........... We all love you big guy......

Hello all! Invasor's win was very impressive, but not surprising. I don't know much about racing, but I wonder why, when Lava Man runs in these big races, he stalks the pace. I read that horses do better at Nad Al Sheiba (sp) when they hold back and close fast. I know they didn't post the fractions, but that pace seemed grueling. It seems that they (Lava Man's connections)would change their strategy a bit when going up against these kinds of horses. Thoughts? No matter though. I love the horse, and the way I look at it is, at least he showed something and was in front for a while. The other American horses were flat the whole time.

Always a Barabaro and Lava Man Fan!!

    Teresa,
I'll go with you, since I have read five different rule books with just about as many differences in definition. So, just by going to the amended Jockey Club rules and American Stud, let's just go with that one. You can look everywhere and find different, but the Jockey Club is the bible, at least here in the U.S.
(they do have some weird definitions for "ahem" horses with different conditions)

Don't forget to email Anderson Cooper at CNN.com. Tell him how wrong it is for Cavel to send away 200 horses who will probably end up in Canada to be slaughtered. We had amassed hundreds of volunteers from Illinois the whole way out to Arizona here to try to place them.

    -----------------

Sunday, April 1st... I wish I knew how to say it. To write so you can feel. I only experience it myself on occasion. Usually later at night, when the lights are dim and horses sigh and the last of their dinner is chewed for the longest time.

A 7 year old girl comes to put things in order. She talks like an adult, and knows words such as nocturnal. Dealing with daily sadness, and often beauty is overlooked. The faces at killer pens haunt, and escape is brought by food and cheesecake and watching Becky Dunaway drive our tractor. Horses come to our ranch to die, and their life slips by unnoticed. Phone call after phone call of horses who need help, killer prices rising, horses from the race track with shattered legs. You get in this groove. Ignoring what is real because nothing ever changes. And then a 7 year old girl takes you away for a couple of hours, and suddenly I am no longer a cynical old fossil. A lifetime of complicated mistrust goes poof. When others have taken advantage, it is not Cathy and I who were screwed over. It was the horses who suffered. Which is why we have always preferred to stay private.

You see I am not explaining this right. I wanted to tell you about horrible conditions for doomed horses, the way we live when a horse comes here to die, food issues which I share with starving horses, and how you can play connect the dots with glowing stars and see anything your mind can imagine.

I wanted to tell you about horses up and down our driveway, how they tug at your heart, and how come John Doe at Starbucks does not share these feelings? And how a 7 year old girl, on a day filled with sadness and racing breakdowns and horses packed in feed lots waiting for the end, how a 7 year old girl comes from out of the clouds to put things in order. I wanted to explain all of this, and after rereading I miserably failed.

I wanted to tell you how life is all we have. Every tiny creature on earth. Brittney shaving her head makes headlines. Paris might do jail time. But you should have seen Brooke and Bunny with the horses, taking a little nap. Enjoy your day, and be sure to hug your horses.

I have his daily page URL in my favorites, so each day I can easily read his thoughts. I hope he can feel the energy from people who are behind him, even if we are not there. The daily post has a major impact; sometimes a horse he describes in the pen he made eye contact with the night before and couldn't get out of his mind touches someone and the money to rescue that horse materializes, miraculously, from someone who read the news. Many remember Abigail from a couple of weeks ago... and foster homes continue to be found, and new owners for broken down, injured and sad horses. He shares good news along with the realities, thank god. He also requests that anyone with questions, help, thoughts, feel free to telephone him at any time. He is a very accessible man and I stand in great awe of someone who can do what he does, on a daily basis, no days off, no vacations from reality.

The URL for the website is

    http://www.tbfriends.com/index.php

His cell phone number is 530-383-2120. He says, "call any old time".

I have been a solid believer in Joe since I first started watching the horses at Golden Gate Fields, thanks to Barbaro, and realized I was seeing the same names from the race track show up as throwaways at TB Friends. That was a great personal dose of reality.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at April 1, 2007 7:18 PM

Thanks, Shelley. I'd had his mailing address awhile back and misplaced it. The man truly is an inspiration. He doesn't always give out the names of the horses that have just come to him from the nearby tracks, but about a week or so ago he mentioned one, "Mr. Thatcher" I think was his name, who apparently was discarded by his people after sustaining an injury. My heart was in my throat, since I'm sure I remember him running at one the tracks up north. (I'm in SoCal) It really "hits home" when you recognize the names or see the photos of these poor, unwanted horses. I just feel that people have no business owning a horse when they make no plans to give him a decent retirement after they're no long able to make money for them. The miserable so & so's! Again, thank God for Joe and his big heart.

Alex and Therese, thanks for the report on Therese's Day At The Track-really enjoyed it!

Here's a nice, upbeat piece about everybody's favorite draft horses (pun intended). I'v never been to opening day, but last year I saw the 'Dales from the 11th floor lobby of my former office. Priceless!

Clydesdales Carry On Tradition Opening Night

(KSDK) -- Opening night for the Cardinals will be a night to remember. Players from the 1967 and 1982 championship teams will be on hand. But one of the highly anticipated moments will be the entrance by the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales.

What would opening day be without them? They're as much a symbol of baseball in St. Louis as the birds on the bat, they help honor every time they take the field. The Clydesdale horses have been synonymous with Cardinal baseball for 40 years.

"It first started back in 1966 when the Budweiser Clydesdales paraded in Downtown St. Louis to commemorate the closing of the first Busch Stadium and opening of the second Busch Stadium," says Kathy Casso, Senior Director of Sports Marketing for Anheuser Busch.

Through the tough 70s, the amazing 80s and the seesaw 90s, the Clydesdale hitch said, "Welcome to another season of hope Cardinal Nation," like few other images.

"Really, anytime you can combine two great icons, you get a pretty effect. It becomes a pretty special occasion," said Casso.

Special occasions and these gentle giants go hand in hand. Based in St. Louis, there are actually five traveling hitches around the country. They get thousands of requests for appearances, and make more then 500 every year. But in St. Louis, Cardinals fans have linked the two.

"I think it's just a matter of seeing the Clydesdales as part of the special occasions time and time again, over the history of this great ball club," said Casso. "That combination if you will. When things, that is moments in time, when those things happen, they associate that those Clydesdales are going to be there."

Dick Rosen is Manager of Clydesdale Operations for Anheuser Busch. He says it will take the handlers about 5 hours just to get ready for the event. "And that will include washing, grooming, braiding and harnessing. Once they're actually ready the harnessing process takes about 45 minutes."

Showtime is a big deal for these 2,000-pound performers, and it's clear to their handlers that they enjoy their work.

"You can see the way they act. Especially when we get into the venues like say Busch Stadium, where it's a large area and lots of cheering people. The horses can sense the excitement from the fans," said Rosen.

Perhaps even more then the first pitch, the lap they'll take around the outfield will ceremoniously kick off the 2007 season, and in St. Louis, we wouldn't have it any other way.

    Old Friends Wallenda Update

Wallenda is flying home. In a finish that mimics his breathtaking, come-from-behind victory in the 1993 Super Derby, this great son of Gulch carried the colors of his generous fans all the way to the finish line. Thanks to all the support from Cot Campbell of Dogwood Stable, the Amerman Foundation, Friends of Barbaro, the Tim Woolley website and hundreds of his supporters, Old Friends raised nearly $2 5 ,000 to assure Wallendas return. The remainder was secured through the trust that United Bank and Trust of Midway has in the Old Friends operation. They loaned us the remainder. And, when he gets home, Wallenda will raise enough on his own to repay the loan. Wallenda will arrive at JFK/ New York on Sunday, April 1, 2007. Hell be quarantined for three days and vanned to Kentucky , arriving on April 4 at Hurstland Farm where hell be test bred and quarantined according to USDA and Commonwealth of Kentucky regulations. Hell be at Old Friends at Dream Chase Farm, his permanent residence, by the end of April. Special thanks to Megumi Igarashi of Narvick International-Japan and Mr. Zenkichi Hashimoto who agreed to retire Wallenda to Old Friends at this time.

Personally, I cant thank you enough for all your support. I know it must be a great thrill to win the Kentucky Derby but I dont think any owner of a Derby winner is as excited as I am today. It means so much. The idea that Wallendas return was fueled by hundreds of fans and the support of enlightened horsemen and women sends a clear message that some people deeply care what happens to these great athletes once their racing and breeding careers are over. And the support for Thoroughbred retirementnot just at Old Friends but at ReRun, the Exceller Fund, Thoroughbred Charities of America, Our Mims, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and dozens of other organizations that support these animalsis growing. People are just beginning to realize that a sport is only as good as how it treats its athletes. I hope you will all come to visit Wallenda and all of our other retirees in the coming months. They are a joy to behold.

    ## In honor of the Dubai Cup I will share this about the Arabian horses..

The following are excerpts from "The Horse: With a treatise of draugh and a copious index" by William Youatt
    Published in 1831

"The Arabs have found out that which the English breeder should never forget, that the female is more concerned than the male in the excellence and value of produce; and the genealogies of their horses are always reckoned from the mothers."

"The Arabian horse would not be acknowledged by every judge to possess a perfect form; His head, however, is inimitable.

The broadness and squareness of the forehead, the shortness and fineness o the muzzle, the prominence and brilliancy of the eye, the smallness of the ears, and the beautiful course of the veins, will always characterise the head of the Arabian Horse."

"The mare and her foal inhabit the same tent with the Bedouin and his children. The neck of the mare is often the pillow of the rider, and, more frequently, of the children, who are rolling about upon her and the foal: yet no accident ever occurs, and the animal acquires that friendship and love for man which occaisonal ill-treatment will not cause him for a moment to forget."

"When the Arab falls from his mare, and is unable to rise, she will immediately stand still, and neigh until assistance arrives.

If he lies down to sleep, as fatigue sometimes compels him, in the midst of th desert, she stands watchful over him, and neighs and rouses him if either man or beast approaches."

"Man, however, is an inconsistent being. The Arab who thus lives with and loves his horses, regarding them as his most valuable treasure, sometimes treats them with a cruelty scarcely to be believed, and not at all to be justified.

The severest treatment which the English racehorse endures is gentleness compared with the trial of the young Arabian. Probably the filly has never before been mounted; she is lead out; her owner springs on her back, and goads her over the sand and rocks of the desert at full speed for fifty or sixty miles without one moment's respite.

She is then forced, steaming and panting, into water deep enough for her to swim. If, immediately after this, she will eat as if nothing occured, her character is established and she is acknowledged to be a genuine descendant of the Kochlani breed. "

"Our horses would fare badly on the scanty nourishment afforded the Arabian. The mare usually has but one or two meals in twenty-four hours.

At night she recieves a little water; and with her scanty provender of five or six pounds of barley or beans, and sometimes a little straw, she lies down content, in the midst of her master's fmaily.

She can, however, endure great fatibue; she will travel fifty miles without stopping; she has been pushed, on emergency, one hundred and twenty miles, and, occaisionally, neither she nor her rider has tasted food for three whole days."

Thanks for the word picture of the Clydesdales on opening day. I was lucky enough to visit their facility near Fort Collins, CO (I hope I have the location right) on my "horse riding vacation" in gorgeous Colorado many years ago. That's when I realized that what I was seeing every day in my lovely state of Pennsylvania were NOT mountains, but just big hills! The friend I went with was a horsewoman for decades, but I wore her out after about three days, so I had to say, "Sorry, but I told you I was coming "out West" to ride, so drop me off, take the car and do what you want, and pick me up when it gets dark!" Needless to say, she and I never vacationed together again. Oh, such wonderful memories of a chestnut horse named Flash.

I hope you are here, because JunJun refuses to wait any longer to thank you for letting Sassytheoffuskat write to him. He had soooooo many things he wanted to write to her about that he told me yesterday that he will have to write a book! He has a title (Mew Sings from junjun the Hansum Blak Kat) and insists that he will write it in his own language. I said, "But, JunJun, what about spelling and grammer?" Then he did that thing that Rosie the horse did, he rolled his eyes, flipped his tail, and made some sort of snort noise at me! And I said, "But, JunJun, people want their children to learn to read proper English!" His reply, "if pepel ken reed Frencht, den day ken reed kat, en sump tymz "proper" izint az gud az awwthen tick!" Well, what can I say to that?

He has chapters that will repeat in his second, third, fourth...., books! He will tell a story from HIS life, then wants to tell a story about a cat friend's life (he wants to know if he can tell about Sassytheoffuskat's life because he thinks that sounds very interesting - he never heard of an offuskat before and thinks other people would like to read about her). He wants Felix stories, and Lizzie stories, and Seamus stories, and Puddy stories, and more....he says they can be funeee storeez or poynt yant, or infor national, or inks spireeng. And of course he will tell Miz Keddee stories. One is called, "Miz Kedee and the frowg."

Then there are other chapters like,"howze rulz - noe skarin da berdz" and "eddy kat - soff pawz", for example. He has so many ideas, he wakes me up and makes me write notes on a tablet by the bed so he/we won't forget them.

Oh, and he says "mind meldz" are when your perzun and you put your foreheads together and just lay there peaceful - and after that there are usually kizzzzzes. He also says that's why most kats have pointy earz (?). He says the kats from Scotchlan have floppity earz but they still know how to do a pretty good mind meld.

Well, since this is a rainy, grey Sunday, now he sez itze tyme fora napt.

Soooooooo happy the horses and jocks in yesterday's races all came past the finish line okay. And LOVED the picture of Dr. R and Jeannine. So wonderful to see that smile again.

    Harriette, again
I will try very hard to remember that written words can have the SAME impact on people as spoken words. My husband loves to watch the "political" shows on MSNBC. Often the people on those shows are mad or trying to get their point across and they get loud and shout over each other and I have to ask him to turn the sound down because it reminds me too much of the "loud house" I grew up in and I can't stand to listen to it even if I am in another room.

I am sorry for the distress I have caused you by "transporting" you to your past. I am truly very sorry and I understand what you are telling me.

YOU CAN ADD THIS TO THE REASONS WHY I LOVE EDGAR PRADO!

Saddle worn by Barbaro in Derby win being sold for charity
    Associated Press
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The saddle worn by Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro will be sold at a charity auction in May to raise money for permanently disabled jockeys.

Edgar Prado, who used the red-and-white leather saddle to guide Barbaro to a dominating victory in last year's Derby, also used it while winning the 2002 and 2004 Belmont Stakes.

The saddle will be auctioned off at the Mint Jubilee Gala on May 4, the night before this year's Derby.

"Barbaro was one of the greatest horses to ever run the Derby," Prado said. "I only used the saddle for major races."

Prado was aboard Barbaro during last year's Preakness Stakes when the 3-year-old colt broke down in the front stretch after injuring his right hind leg.

Prado's ability to quickly pull up and calm the horse helped doctors immediately address Barbaro's injuries. Barbaro underwent emergency surgery after the race and spent several months in rehabilitation before being euthanized in January following complications from the injury.

Prado donated the saddle to the Jockeys' Guild and proceeds from the sale of the saddle will go to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, a division of National Thoroughbred Racing Association Charities. There are 58 severely injured jockeys receiving vital assistance each month from the fund.

I am glad to hear I'm not the only Invasor fan around... I love that horse, he has a heart bigger then he is. I am a HUGE Scat Daddy fan and I am estatic (can't spell) over his triumph in the Florida Derby...

Posted by: Gia at April 1, 2007 10:08 PM

Its a year later and I cannot believe the triple crown is up again. Still saddened by the loss of Barbaro, I have a hard time getting excited about it... I love Scat Daddy, and I think its his Derby to win or lose. Anyone else feeling kinda blah about the Triple Crown.

GIA - I'm having a hard time getting into anything that Barbaro was "into" last year (I cried like a baby watching the FL Derby)...I will watch the Derby, but CANNOT watch the Preakness...and I don't have a Derby choice yet - a lot will depend upon who Edgar ends up riding!

I'm one of these people who believes "it takes as long as it takes..."

Posted by: Nancy in CT at April 1, 2007 10:17 PM

I'm watching the races but not into any one horse. Actually, I think there are many who are good but none is great. In the end many could win. I would not be surprised if the 3 big races this year went to 3 different horses.

I think I will watch the Derby more to see what they say about Barbaro. I will watch the Preakness coverage if they show the Barbaro stakes.

    HELLO FOB NATION AND FAMBLEE:

I have so many things I want to say because I haven't been 'here' since early yesterday and I had to take a 'self-imposed' vacation from this site for a very good reason.

I was going to be out all day yesterday and had to tape the Dubai World Cup so that I could watch it later on without knowing the results. Once I knew who won a race, the excitement would no longer be there for me. I knew that this site would be talking about the races all day long, so I had to stay away until I was finally able to watch them all today and then I came here and read everything. And I've just caught up!!
    ####################################

TRICIA G ... Your "Secretariat" post brought tears to my eyes yet again. Thank you so much ... it was such a fitting tribute to my "First Love" ... I copied and saved your post to my "Secretariat" folder because I enjoyed it so much!!
    ##################

SUSAN W ... I absolutely agree that the American prep races should receive prime time coverage on nationally televised stations and not just via streaming online. Because I have dialup, even if I was home yesterday, I couldn't have watched it online. That notwithstanding, however, I agree with you ... The Florida Derby should have been televised ... I would have been able to tape both that the Dubai World Cup if NBC televised it. Sad to say, they didn't, and I was disappointed.
    ######################

I found out by mistake that Edgar and Scat Daddy won the Florida Derby, but it was no mistake how thrilled I was for Edgar!!! And Chelokee was a very impressive 3rd, and I am so happy for Michael about that.

Edgar had 6 wins yesterday ... HE DESERVES IT ALL! If I had been at Gulfstream yesterday, I would have been a big winner because, just out of sheer loyalty, devotion and dedication to Edgar, I would have been every single mount of his to win ... and all of that money would have gone to laminitis research. I made the wrong choice to do something else yesterday and missed that entire experience, but again, so very happy for Edgar and for Michael and Chelokee, too. I only hope and pray that Edgar is given the mount on Scat Daddy for the Kentucky Derby. I hope it's not taken away from him!
    ##################

Dubai World Cup ... WOW!! BIG SURPRISES!!

Thanks to TWR, Alex and this site, I was familiar with many of the names of the horses/jockeys in all the races .. Thor's Echo came to mind in the sprint, even though he didn't win.

I also recognized names of Kelly's Landing, Iridescence, Red Rocks, etc. I'm feeling like I know more than I ever did ... and I do! LOL, but that's not saying much!!

Lava Man .... what can I say ... my heart was with him but he just can't seem to "get it" outside California. I wonder why his connections even bother to ship him to other tracks, especially so far away as Dubai, knowing his "track record" (pun intended) away from home. Too bad for Lava Man because he's a great racing champion for the West Coast of the US!!
    ###############

    I N V A S O R!!!! NOTHING LEFT TO SAY ... WORLD CLASS CHAMPION, BAR NONE!!

A great 'showdown' between him and Premium (tongue-wagging) Tap ... very exciting. I would have been happy for either of them once Discreet Cat eased up. But I am happy for Invasor's win.

My personal favorite was Discreet Cat, and I'm a little surprised to learn of his throat abscess, only because I thought that horses were thoroughly checked out right before a race and not just a week or two out. Anything can happen on any given day, and I don't understand how this abscess wasn't noted at least the last couple of days before the race.

MAYBE ALEX OR SOMEONE ELSE WHO KNOWS CAN EXPLAIN THIS TO ME .... HOW WAS THE ABSCESS NOT DETECTED?

It's a shame for "Cat" but for him to wind up dead last, you had to know there was something 'amiss' with him yesterday. Even the commentators noted that Dettori 'eased him up' toward the end of the race. I hope he returns in top racing form soon.

Is he a possible contender for the Kentucky Derby? Anyone know this?? Alex, Mikec???
    #####################

THE BARBARO COMMERCIALS from the NTRA during the Dubai Cup coverage ... totally unexpected and such a surprise. The great thing about it being a "commercial" was that we got to see it at least 4/5 times during the 2 hour program. I loved the entire commercial with Seabiscuit, Secretariat, etc. and THEN Barbaro!!! And that last line just got to me ... "Finally, a chance to give back!" I couldn't agree more! Major kudos to the NTRA for an extraordinary commercial for The Barbaro Memorial Fund and "RidingWithBarbaro.org". Seeing Bobby so thin at that point outside grazing with Dr. R just brought it all back again ... and the sadness and sorrow are 'front and center' again.
    #####################

Wonderful Information about DelPark under Alex's link ... Wow! Mike Rea will be there plus a lot of other goodies. I don't know how I will get through that weekend ... but I can't wait for the smiles, the gladness, the joy, and the sadness and the tears ... can't have one without the other, so I will experience it all completely!!
    #####################

Great News that the "Flying Wallenda" is home after actually flying home!! So wonderful to know he will be safe and sound and cared for with lots of tender, loving care!!
    #####################

Laurie H and Ken Z ... Beautiful sentiments, thoughts and emotions from both of you ... thank you for your gifts.

Harriette Brillianthawk .... your posts are always inspirational and spiritual in depth ... thank you.

Dee Mirich ... your writing style is uniquely different and very enjoyable to read ... thank you.

Verna ... Glad that your sister is improving slowly and steadily ... prayers and good thoughts ...

Equine Heaven ... I LOVED yesterday's post about Secretariat's Birthday Bash ... I had tears and smiles as I read through it all ... it sounds like they had a real "thoroughbred" extravaganza up there toasting and eating in honor of Big Red. Slew can cook for me any day, but I wouldn't want Barbaro to be my clothing designer!! LOL ... I'm surprised that no one wore the 'trademark' blue and white blinkers for Big Red's occasion ...

Now, Equine Heaven, you must tell me ... just WHAT was Secretariat's wish?????

I hope I haven't forgotten anyone or anything; if I have, please forgive the omission.

And if anyone is still reading this ... BLESS YOUR PATIENCE!!!

Please pray for the filly (I am so sorry that I did not get her name) who went down on the track during the 10th at Gulfstream...of course, other than to say she went down, the announcers provided no information!

    MJ ...

    Linnie,

Thanks for the info. I purchased my Secretariat beannie from their site as money went to charity. I have been very picky about only buying Barbaro's stuff from sites that give to UPENN, etc.

Oh, I wish I were rich and could buy that saddle!! I saw the auction advertised on CNN.

Posted by: MJ at April 1, 2007 9:26 PM
    #######################

MJ ... I feel just as you do ... I want the money I spend to also have a residual effect in doing some good for laminitis/equine medical research, so I completely understand. Anything you buy from secretariat.com will have at least some of that money going to laminitis, and that's good enough for me.

Regarding the Barbaro saddle that Edgar is auctioning off .... before I read the entire article and just read the headline that it would be auctioned off next month, at first I thought it was going to happen at DelPark and I was trying to figure out a way to bid THOUSANDS of dollars I don't readily have to get it ... good thing I won't have that option before me! LOL .... Of course as I continued to read the article, I quickly learned that this auction will take place the night before the Kentucky Derby; i.e. May 4, at a big charity fundraiser. Unfortunately, I can't make it as I have prior commitments on that date. LOLOLOLOL ... Yeah Right!!!!

Seriously, though, it's just what makes Edgar Prado stand head and shoulders above the rest .... he loved Barbaro so much and it shows in everything he says AND does!!

Nancy in CT ... couldn't agree more with you about Edgar ... thanks for posting the article.

    BARBARO HOBBY HORSE INFORMATION ...

You may recall that we had a 'discussion' several days ago about a hobby horse fashioned after Barbaro that was made and given to Mrs. Jackson by Dee Kegley. An article appeared in the newspaper about it and I posted that we should all order one since she stated that a portion of the proceeds would be going to The Barbaro Fund.

After that, a discussion ensued here about whether Mrs. Kegley had gone through the appropriate channels to get permission, etc. I emailed Mrs. Kegley and here is the response I got from her:

    Hey Linda,

Thanks so much for your kind email. The response from the newspaper article has been wonderful, and I'm truly surprised by the number of folks who have read it on-line. The web version didn't include a photo of the original Barbaro so I've attached a copy (taken with Gracie Boone just before we shipped it).

No worries as to your questions - I share your concerns and work very hard to ensure that everything is done legally and with full agreement. Mrs. Jackson has phoned me a few times but we haven't had an opportunity to discuss details for further Barbaro items. She is pleased at the prospect so I am preparing a formal proposal for her consideration. I will let you know as soon as everything is approved.

    Best Regards,
    Dee

I trust this will satisfy everyone who raised concerns about Mrs. Kegley's character, reputation and desire to do what is ethically and legally 'right' in this situation. I had no doubt to the contrary, but for those who did, at least we know that everything is being handled 'above board' with the principal people involved.

And once this is all approved, I still stand on my initial comment: WE SHOULD ALL ORDER ONE!!

BAEB, you have succeeded in GUILTING me into sending an email to Anderson Cooper cnn.com - here's what I just sent:

Writing with a request for you to follow a story - about the (approx) 200 horses turned away from the Cavel Horse Slaughter plant in DeKalb IL, last Thursday, after a Washington DC District Court ruling that effectively shut down the last horse slaughter plant for human consumption, that was operating in Illinois. (The other 2, in Texas, have been effectively shut down for several months in the wake of federal court rulings.)

The 200 horses turned away from Cavel, are headed back to their points of origin, per orders from the FDA. Various humane organizations had (overnight) amassed funds to purchase them and homes for all of them, but the owners refused to turn them over to be saved.

We are led to believe these horses have not been fed or watered during the entire ordeal.

When they get back to point of origin (as ordered by FDA) they will be headed to slaughter in Canada (or Mexico) - although there are funds and homes available for ALL OF THEM.

I saw your coverage of the Katrina animal rescue. You are a true human being.

PLEASE cover this story and maybe we can make it have a happy ending.

btw - I am a lifelong horse owner, and currently affiliated with the Friends of Barbaro (FOBs) at http://www.timwoolleyracing.com - that is the stable where Barbaro trained before his accident.

Please do something with this. Caroline Jaffe (with all id info they asked for)

THIS IS SOMETHING WE ALL CAN DO without parting with any $. Those are the kinds of things I look for, to do, since I have no $ to spare. THANKS, BARB for this opportunity. CJ

    #### Hey FOB's I need some help here.

I got a voicemail this morning from my step-mom and she told me this in the voice mail "I for the life of me cannot understand why you got so out of orbit and emotional over a horse that you never even knew. This was a very childesh and adults do not cry over a horse. Adults don't shed tears over a horse, particualiraly one that they never even had contact with. It is just out of my comprehension how anyone that is a grown-up would cry over Barbaro".

Well I lost it.... I didn't call her back but did call my dad...... He of course understood because he is my dad but I have been trying to find something on the internet about how many people LOST IT that day and in the last months over Barbaro.... I need an article about the grief that people are going through. I need to be able to show her that I am NOT the only one on the planet that cried over Barbaro. She DOESN'T GET IT!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know of an article that I can send her to help her GET IT!!!!!!

    Thanks

Yes you are right, but Glenda was the poster and she had more than one concern, one of which is that which you have addressed here. ... Fair enough.

Please re-read the email from Mrs. Kegley ... she is just in the stages of submitting a "formal proposal" to Mrs. Jackson, so this is all in the 'embryo' stage right now, so I am more than willing to wait for further information.

As for me, personally, it doesn't matter what percentage goes to the Barbaro Fund because that is between Mrs. Kegley and the Jacksons; should they, individually or jointly, wish to divulge that information, so be it; if not, that's between them. I have no idea 'what' portion of the proceeds from www.secretariat.com goes to laminitis research, but I trust Penny Chenery, as I do Gretchen Jackson and whatever agreement she may make with Mrs. Kegley. If they want it 'public', it will be made public.

I will purchase one of these hobby horses as long as a mutually consentable and legal agreement is reached between Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Kegley.

    ## This really irks the heck out of me. Barbara Livingston had to remove her Barbaro photos again because of THEFT!! I just checked her site, and this is her statement dated 3-27-07:

"I'm sorry, but I've just learned about rampant theft of my Barbaro photos on Webshots.com. "Members" post photos, which Webshots then sells. As a professional photographer I simply cannot put my images at such risk. The world is a strange place. Until I can figure out if there's a way to post my photos where people won't sell them, I'm afraid I can no longer post my Barbaro photos. My apologies."

Alie and Rachel are both "very" warm, genuine and sincere people. When I didn't know if I could aford the banner, Alie told me. Don't worry I will pay for the rest of it. I cried!

That's who they are, Debbie ... I haven't had the pleasure of speaking to Alie because she wasn't there when I called. Rachel was wonderfully warm and conversational even though it was the first time I have ever spoken to her personally. I know why you cried, Debbie .... and it's perfectly understandable.

    Debbie L.A.,

I pitched in a LITTLE. I'd love to see it when it is up, just 'cause "I GET IT !"

Sarah, that truly does STEEENK! I think Barbara Livingston is one of the finest equine photographers in the history of this art form. Her love for the animals shows in every photo. She has been so incredibly generous, not just with Bobby's photos but with those of other horses as well. Why some people feel compelled to steal from her.....grrrrr.

Posted by: Susan E. at April 2, 2007 12:30 AM

Sorry Barbara Livingston, sad to hear that people would do that to her. Anything for a buck. They don't get it!

    FUN!

Trivia contest on Bloodhorse.com, bottom of home page. There's an unspecified prize. If it's $ and an FOB won it and donated it, how cool would that be?

" When Barbaro won the Florida Derby (gr. I) last year and then went on to win the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), he joined a distinguished list of horses who had won both races, including Northern Dancer, Spectacular Bid, Swale, and Thunder Gulch. Who was the first horse to complete that double and in what year?"

Posted by: Susan E. at April 2, 2007 12:34 AM

SYLVIA; Yes, it's a shame that Chelokee may not get to show what he can do because of human connections. I for one will be sick if he can't get into the Derby.

    SUSAN E ...

Linnie, you crack me up! Waiting to post till the races were run so you wouldn't know in advance...you are a true fan! Lizzie sends purrs to Luke.
    #######################

Are you kidding? LOLOL ... There was NO WAY I could read this site UNTIL I watched the entire 2 hours of the Dubai World Cup. I wanted to feel as if I was watching it in "real time" ... and I know if I came 'here', I would be doomed!! LOLOL I was out all day, but when I came online last night, I wanted, desperately, to come 'home' and read, but I knew that all of the winners and other important information would be 'in full view' and I just couldn't do it. I got my coffee this morning, rewound my VCR, and sat on the floor, up close and personal, and watched and rewound and watched again. And only THEN was I able to come here and read the articles, results and comments from everyone!!

Luke, by the way, sends Lizzie, hugs and kisses!! What is going on between the two "L" words? LOLOL

Rosie looks a trifle cranky. There is a member of the Poulet Brigade in her pen and Rosie's nest is built up. And you can see Misty!

Thunder Gulch won the 121 Kentucky Darby.
If we put our heads together we could win.

Tricia--yeah she's built up a mound of straw, ostensibly to foal in....or maybe it's something for her to kick and shred when labor gets intense. The chickens spend a lot of time fluffing it.

It looks like the first horse to win both the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby was Needles in 1956 or have you already figured this out........?

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at April 2, 2007 12:59 AM

    Susan E.

That trivia question on Bloodhorse was certainly a lot easier then the ones Alex asked a couple weeks ago.

Posted by: Dave, IL at April 2, 2007 1:02 AM

Needles in 1956 won the FL and KY derbies.

    Love,

Rosie may go tonight, she is doing the mouth thing.
I am out of here, don't want to be "chating" on the site. But can't wait to see the Banner. Dr Richardson will be getting his card Monday and the banner will make it all come together for him.
So happy about that! We Get it DR R. We had it from the begining.

Bonnie, I hope you are right, but I must ask this question, please ...

I have put several 'things' into my google engine but nothing's come up giving me this information.

Will you please tell me 'how' you worded your search to come up with the answer? I am still trying to learn how to navigate these search engines and always seem to come up 'short' in the results department.

    Thanks so much, Bonnie.

You are correct, but you can still go there and answer. They draw a winner from all the correct answers.

    Hi all,
    Back again.
I was just watching 60 Minutes. It had a segment on Medicare drugs and "all" that went on to get this through to a vote.
OMG I can't believe how the system works. All the back ally, closed door deals. One lawmaker laid it right out on the line and said "they have all the money they could ever need and that is what it tkes to get a bill pasted" speaking of the pharmaceutical companies and the lobbiest, of which, many of the lawmakers found very nice, HIGH paying jobs with after the bill passed.
Watching this at first made me think, we don't have a chance if that is the case, but then, I got mad, that is when I said I am going to dig in even harder and do all I can. I may be only one, but I have plenty of family who are right by my side fighting with me.
Just remember this when you are calling/faxing/emailing...
I have never been that politically active (to this point)so I had no idea "Just" how bad it really was. God help the horses, because these are the people we need to get this done for good.

    Love to you all,
    Verna

PS...Barb, will try to get back to your site tonight, if not will be there tomorrow. No way I'm gonna let the pro out weigh the anti... no way!

    Good night all.

DAVE IL - does this mean that Dynacielo is Barbaro's half-sister...or is the connection through the dam?

Posted by: Nancy in CT at April 2, 2007 1:11 AM

    Hello Barbaro,

We had rain ALL day again today. Very dreary and gray.

I cant wait for the weather to get a little nicer and the grass gets green and the skies are a bright baby blue...somewhat like your Heaven.

Our flowers may bloom in a variety of bright colors with a fragrance people could only dream of duplicating.

And our creeks and lakes may have clear, blue water running through them.

But I believe that everything good and glorious that we have from nature, doesnt quite meet the standards in your Heaven.

I received an email some time ago with a picture attached, called "The Day God Spilled the Paint". The moment I saw the stunning picture, I thought of Heaven...and that that was your world now.

Honey, I know youre happy. Living in that world, bounding with beauty and serenity...I know youre happy Honey. Thank you God.

Are you ready for your blanket? I promise I'll pull it up high on your neck. We'll fluff the folds and let it drape gently around you.

The stars are being a little bashful lately with the weather but soon to return, I'm sure.

Honey, your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days.

Now, dream sweet dreams tonight Honey. Let your friends guide you on their chosen journey and you will be surrounded by beauty and the warmth of love.

Good night Barbaro. Sleep well, sleep tight, and have sweet dreams that make your night just right. I love you...XXOOxxox

    Hello Hope,

We had cold, rainy and windy weather here again today. Driving past some pastures, the horses were still out grazing and I wanted to stop and lead them all back to their barns and dry them off...

I know you were kept comfortable today and away from any kind of miserable weather. Did your filly let you rest at all?!

Should we grab your blanket and cuddle you up? We'll pull it high and again, fluff the folds. The ends will drape gently around you...

Dream sweet dreams Hope. Dream of being a Mommy to a precious little filly that will keep you quite busy Little One!

Good night Hope. You know I love you so much...and your filly too! Good night...xxooxx xoxo

    Hello Hawty Creek,

Sounds like you and Alex had a nice quiet day together. You can't beat that, can you?!

Well, are you sleepy at all that we need to grab your blanket? We'll make it the heavier one so that you'll be nice and cozy tonight while you have sweet dreams.

You're Dream Angels are patiently waiting and they have a plan...Hmmmmm. They're not even dropping hints Hawty. I guess we could call it a Surprise!

Please close your eyes and follow your Dream Team. You will see beauty everywhere you go and feel the warmth of love envelop you upon every turn...

Good night Hawty Creek. I love you... xxooxx

    Linnie,

I put "winners of the florida derby and the kentucky derby" into google and went to horseracingarizona.com to get the answer

Posted by: Dave, IL at April 2, 2007 1:13 AM

Barbaro's connections and FOBs never fail to amaze me. Our beloved Barbaro brings out the best in all of us. Edgar, what an incredibly selfless act to donate the proceeds from the sale of the saddle to permanently disabled jockeys. You, too, are an angel.

I love you, Barbaro & miss you so much. Your saddle, thanks to you & Edgar, will help so many.

A pleasant night to all with this good news.

    Joy FOB Forever

Nope, I didn't have the answer to the trivia question but I do know, heh heh heh!

Posted by: Susan E. at April 2, 2007 1:14 AM

    Linnie,
I think I tried several things - "first horse to win Florida and Kentucky Derby" was one, then I tried "Florida Derby Winners" and I think it was from that list that I remembered seeing the horse Needles on a Kentucky Derby list too. So, I compared the two lists. I'm not 100% sure it's right as the list didn't go real far back. It made me think that the Florida Derby began in the '50's.....? I imagine several people knew the answer but I entered mine anyway. I am not one to collect data on horseracing. It said to check Wed. for the winner.
