Barbaro Updates: 245

updates are now here.

Update 1692: NoBiz completed his final work for the Wood Memorial on saturday and will ship to New York on thursday: Nobiz Like Shobiz Ready for Wood After :59 3/5 Drill. Street Sense has traveled from Florida to Churchill Downs: Street Sense Returned to Churchill Downs Stable.

Edgar Prado, who had a banner day at Gulfstream on saturday, is offering the saddle he used to win on Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby for Charity: Barbaro's Saddle to Raise Money for Disabled Riders.

Update 1691: At the races! Teresa from Brooklyn (occasional poster) sent this report from Gulfstream Park yesterday:

General impressions of Gulfstream: I didn't go anywhere near the newly-opened casinos and gaming rooms, focusing instead of scoping out betting machines, food/drink, and a place to sit. When I arrived at 12:30 (later than expected due to early morning car trouble on Alligator Alley), I was fearful that I'd look like one of those people who shows up at the Travers at noon and is bewildered that there's nowhere to sit. I was pleasantly surprised to find that parking was easy and that the main building, while crowded, wasn't unmanageable. I wandered past he main building to the tented area, where reasonably comfortable bleachers had been set up, starting at the 16th pole. Those seats didn't fill throughout the day, and I ended up with a front row seat at the 16th pole--prime seating, especially as it was free (as was parking--thank you, slot machines). By about the 6th race, demand had exceeded capacity: long, long lines to bet (I got in line at 6 MTP and got shut out, at least in part because people didn't know how to use the betting machines--did me a favor because my horse lost, anyway), get a drink, go to the bathroom. The place never felt excessively crowded, but nor did it feel like it could comfortably provide the services needed.

For a Grade I day, the undercard was something of a disappointment, aided no doubt in part by the Dubai races and the quality of horses and jockeys over there. With all due respect to Prado's greatness, he benefitted significantly by JR's (Velazquez) decision to ride in Dubai; Prado picked up JR's mounts on Pletcher's horses. Good move by Edgar to stay put! I can't imagine that Pletcher won't give Scat Daddy back to JR for the Derby (JR's been on the horse since he was a two year old), but it will be an interesting scenario.

The Derby set up perfectly for Scat Daddy, who showed that he's figured out what he's supposed to do. As a baby, he came from way off the pace, greenly flying down the stretch and relying on his speed. Yesterday, he stalked nicely and comfortably, and when the time came, he did exactly what he needed to do. When I saw Stormello go to the front and set reasonable fractions through the half, I knew that Scat Daddy would be tough to beat. He was impressive.

Given Chelokee's trips in his last two races, we probably haven't seen what he can really do, but his jockey's got to figure out how to get him in position; at this point, we don't even know whether Chelokee knows how to close when given the opportunity, though he gives every indication of having what it takes.

I'll be at the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct next week, and it will be interesting to see how the field compares. The Wood was won by Bellamy Road in a remarkable 17 length victory two years ago, and last year, over a muddy track, Bob and John narrowly beat a fast-closing Jazil, who came on the national scene for the first time that day.

Update 1690: A quiet morning this morning for me at Fair Hill. I went in late and only had Hawty Creek to take care of, and was not planning on riding her. I cannot see a race in the current book for her so will need to just keep her ticking over until something comes up. I saw Tim when I arrived at Fair Hill. He had just breezed Red Aspen, and was happy with the way she breezed. I think she has one more breeze to go and will then be ready for her debut. Lets hope she continues her impressive career this year. Tim and I also discussed the races yesterday. He's a big Invasor fan, so was happy about that. Anyway, a nice quiet morning, mucking out Hawty Creek and then giving her a good pick of grass.

Update 1689: Godolphin reports that Discreet Cat is suffering from a throat abscess: DISCREET CAT UPDATE. Sporting Life reports: ABSCESS BLAMED FOR CAT DEFEAT, excerpt:

Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford explained: "He was scoped in the week before the race so the problem has materialised in the 48 hours coming up to the race.

"He basically has an aggressive throat abscess which is clearly causing great discomfort and he is on a course of anti-biotics.

"Breathing would have been difficult during the race which explains his performance."

Discreet Cat won each of his three starts in America last term, culminating in victory in the Cigar Mile, and a return trip is still on the agenda.

"The plan remains for him to go back to America to continue his career. Obviously it is disappointing he was beaten but at least we know there was a reason for it," Crisford added.

I spoke to Peter Brette last night. Chelokee appeared to cool out well after his Florida Derby third. He noted Ramon was pretty upset with himself. There are no plans yet for Chelokee, but it is likely he will ship to Keeneland and they will take it from there. Peter was very happy with Chelokee's performance.

Update 1688: Here are some of the media reports from yesterday's racing:

Update 1687: Scat Daddy took the Florida Derby, beating Notional and Chelokee. Scat Daddy is certainly looking like a strong contender for the Derby, but Chelokee ran a terrific race in his first race in stakes company. Ramon tried to bring Chelokee up the inside rail turning for home and the gap narrowed. He had to take up and then bring Chelokee wide, they closed to finish third. Chelokee ran an impressive race in defeat.

Update 1686: Some quick thoughts on the Dubai World Cup evening. Excellent competition from horses around the world. Nice to see horses from Asia, Europe and America competing. Invasor was amazing. Discreet Cat looked like he did not get the mile and a quarter trip. English Channel looked uncomfortable throughout his race. Lava Man still cannot win outside of California, no matter the surface. Godolphin is strugging (and not sure Coolmore even showed up). Great to see the victories and horses we did, from around the world!

Jeannine Edwards just e-mailed a few pictures from tonight's festivities: ABC crew in Dubai for World Cup.

Update 1685: I N V A S O R ... very impressive, Premium Tap was a good second. The rest were far ... far behind, including Discreet Cat who finished last!

Update 1684: Jack Ireland, who is planning to attend the Delaware Park Celebration on April 29, writes about the local horses in the Florida Derby: Florida Derby a big step for local horses.

I just saw a replay of Asiatic Boy in the UAE Derby, that was a dominating performance. I am not sure what happened to Godolphin's filly Folk but there was only one horse in this race.

Update 1683: A quiet morning for me this morning, with six to ride. My leg is no better than yesterday, and felt sore on my first set, riding Hawty Creek out back. She was good, which was a good thing! My second set was Grandma. Tim was on Nautical Agent. As we were approaching the track (Tapeta track) a set was breezing by the gap. This spooked Grandma who then wheeled. That's not good at the best of times, but when you are a little sore and protecting something, it is not good. Anyway, we did survive. Grandma galloped a mile and a quarter in behind Nautical Agent. Tim then went on to breeze Nautical Agent 3/8ths. She looked good drawing away from me and Tim said she went nicely, really lengthening her stride. My next set was Nonpariel, who went across the fields with Tim on Quick Quest. We did two gallops up a hill. They both went nicely. After that I had three more to ride, one to the Tapeta track, and two joggers on the dirt track. A nice low key morning which I survived!

We had a couple of Fans of Barbaro visiting which was nice, I hope they enjoyed their visit and were not to put off by my limp! Now settling in to watch some of the races on HRTV, and of course I'll then look forward to the ABC show. Tim reckons Invasor is a lock. I am not so sure.

Update 1682: The main racing focus today will be on Dubai (World Cup) and Gulfstream (Florida Derby).

Invasor versus Discreet Cat in the $6million World Cup will be a terrific showdown. They did meet at this meeting last year in the UAE Derby, Discreet Cat winning in fine style. Since that time both Invasor and Discreet Cat have been unbeaten, Invasor meeting the best America has to offer. Invasor is coming to the race off a recent win, Discreet Cat has not run since the Cigar Mile in November. It should be very interesting. The undercard is fantastic. HRTV covers the races live this morning, ABC will have a 2 hour special this afternoon beginning at 2:30 pm (and here they are this morning preparing: ABC crew in Dubai for World Cup). Enjoy.

World Cup Connections Confident Day Before Race
It's on! Invasor, Discreet Cat to do battle in the desert in Dubai World Cup.

The Florida Derby is a major Derby prep, used last year by Barbaro to set himself up for his facile Derby victory. Michael Matz has another contender, Chelokee. Chelokee comes into this race off an allowance win, and while he has no stakes experience, he has looked impressive in his two wins. The Florida Derby includes three of the first four finishers of the Fountain of Youth (NoBiz is going for the Wood Memorial next weekend), Scat Daddy, Stormello (who went back to California and now is back in Florida) and Adore the Gold. Notional also comes in from California. This should be a great race, HRTV will be covering it.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

We are definitely into Spring in Maine now - 50s and sunny, but the wind has dried everything out so much we have a high fire danger. We expect some precipitation on Monday.

I'm looking forward to the racing this afternoon and finally seeing Discreet Cat (so handsome!) in action against Invasor (He's the best!). Wish I could see the Florida Derby but I can't so I will just say right now GO CHELOKEE!

Off for another cup of Green Mt.

Good morning all

The Dubai World Cup should be fantastic. I'm hoping for a good run from Sir Percy on the turf and to find out whether it really is a two-horse race between Invasor and Discreet Cat on the dirt.

### Janice

I don't think I shall be able to get to see it live, but I think you can get replays on the Dubai World Cup website. It's a good site anyway to see news about what's going on there.

Please lite candles for Barbaro today...down to about 1100. Let's keep his flame burning!

Safe passage to all riders and horses today and in the weeks and months ahead.

Safe rides for all in the desert...and here in the states this weekend. Thank you Alex, for the continued pix and commentary from Jeannine.

With all that is happening--much of it hopeful--on the horse slaughter front, don't forget the rescue groups who are struggling to care for and feed the horses they've already pulled out of the killer feedlots.

There's need everyday... check out the Rescue section of the Forum, and chances are, you'll find someone who would be happy for your donation--whatever the amount...

I have a soft spot for Joe and Cathy Shelton near Sacramento CA> They are in need of fosterhomes as well as the usual day-to-day stuff for their over 200 horses...

Joe calls it "our wonderful addiction." So it is...

IMHO, we're going to be involved in support and maintenance for so many of these groups more and more if--no, not if, WHEN--S311 and HR503 are passed into law to protect our horses from transport into terrible Mexico or Canada...

Joe Shelton at TB Friends writes a great journal everyday:
http://tbfriends.com/index.php

It's another day to do the right thing. Be kind. Life is precious, life is short...so, mazeltov!

PS: Thank you so much for the Junkyard Stallion post last week. I loved it. We have driving competitions near here every July and we get to see those old type Morgans on many carts or carriages. They are to die for....

PRAYERS AND SAFE HOME FOR ALL BRAVE HORSES WHO PUT HOOVES TO TRACK WORLD-WIDE TODAY!

I was reading an obituary notices for the aunt of a childhood friend last night, and discovered this poem from an anthology published by the deceased woman...it seems particularly appropriate here...I offer it for Barbaro:

"When you are gone I know that I shall think of you when sunsets die,

Knowning that you have long been blessed with darkness and are safe at rest.

And long before dawn floods the sky you will have found the day,

And I, bowing my head in silent prayer, shall find your spirit everywhere."

Prayers that all the horses run swift and come safe today.

Big Red, Barbaro please watch over the races today and keep your brothers and sisters safe. Love and miss you.

Have a good day everyone.

Alex, hope your morning workouts have gone well, now prop up the leg and settle back to watch the racing. Thanks for all the updates this week from Dubai and Florida, you're one of a kind.

ADORE THE GOLD worked lights out before the SWALE. He worked 2 bullets prior to that race. He worked kind of slow prior to the Fountain of Youth and came up short. he's working like a train again now, look for a REAL BIG performance today.
CHELOKEE got a ride like Ray Charles was on him last time. If he came of age in his last(I think he did) and gets anykind of a favorable trip today he WILL be a force in todays race.
I think todays winners will come from the group that ran off the board in The FOuntain or didn't run in it at all.(SEE NOTIONAL)
Could that be the trifecta???

URGENT~ NEW RECALL OF PET FOOD- DRY!

I know this is off-subject, but Hills Pet Food has recalled their Prescription M/D Feline Dry food- 4 lb bags & 10 lb bags. This is the FIRST recall of dry food due to the contaminated wheat gluten. This food is given primarily to diabetic cats (my Mickey included....). Fortuntately, Mickey has not shown any ill effects but needless to say, I have stopped giving it to him. I am waiting to hear from my vet as to an alternative and will post her recommendations later on.

Safe racing for all horses & riders in today's events. GO Discreet Cat in the World Cup!!! Can't decide who I'm rooting for in the FL Derby... too many favorites, too many loyalties. I think I'll just let Barbaro decide!

Have a wonderful early spring day... counting the days til DelPark!!

IMPORTANT NEWS -- ALPO WET FOOD RECALL

For the full company news release follow this link
PURINA RECALL

"Alpo" Brand Prime Cuts In Gravy Canned Dog Food

Voluntary Nationwide Recall

No Dry Purina Products Involved

St. Louis, Missouri, March 30, 2007

Nestl預urina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO? Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17
pet food manufacturing facilities.

Earlier today the FDA announced the finding of melamine in products related to the March 16 Menu Foods recall, and advised Purina of the source of the contaminated supply. Purina then determined that it had received some quantity from the suspect supplier. The company proactively notified the FDA and immediately began this recall process.

Purina is confident that the contaminated wheat gluten has been isolated to this limited production quantity of ALPO Prime Cuts canned products.

The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a ?Best Before Feb. 2009? date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Purina's 5.3-ounce Mighty Dog? pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution on March 16 as part of the Menu Foods recall. ONLY Mighty Dog pouch products and specific date codes of ALPO Prime Cuts canned dog food are being recalled.[continued]

Hoping for safe racing for all today on a big day. Missing the Florida Derby in person for the first time in 15 years to take care of Over Enough. His eye is slowly improving, thanks for everyone's concern. There have been 20 winners of the Florida Derby who have gone on the win the Kentucky Derby. All week on the S. Florida radio stations they have been playing Barbaro's Florida Derby stretch run and saying "last year Barbaro captured the Florida Derby then went on to capture America's heart." Thinking of him especially today.

Dubai races have started, waiting the start of the 3rd race right now.

Thoughts are with all the horses caught in the Illinois "pipeline" hoping people will come to their senses and turn the horses over to the rescue organizations offering to take them.

Good morning, my Beloved Angel Boys. Missing you.

Good morning, Barbaro Nation! I too can't watch the races today, but fervently hope for a safe trip home for all, wherever they run. Props to Collier Hill's connections for making the touch-but right-call.

C'mon Chelokee! Go baby go!

Re: Purina. Glad they proactively announced a recall. I am still terrified, as are all pet owners, I'm sure.

Barb M--I am so sorry you can't attend the Fl Derby today. Hopefully you can watch it from the stable while you're with Over Enough. Please give him a big warm neck hug from me and Lizzie.

Hola Barbaro Nation,

Happy racing everyone, may all the athletes be safe. I just saw a gigantic horse--Kelly's Landing-- win

I know I am among many missing Barbaro so much today.

The petfood recall is tragic and frightening. A big thank you to FOBs like Susan, Cheryl and Laurie and others who keep us informed of all the updates.

Good Morning Fambleee

Alex, so sorry your "laig" is still bothersome. Hope that maybe you'll be able to take some time off of it today and rest and heal. Thank you for the great links.

Thinking good thoughts for our Chelokee baby and for Adore The Gold. Praying for safe rides for eveyone near and afar.

Frightening news again from Purina, who have voluntarily recalled Alpo products. Hope there is some reassurance to all that there is 24 hour task forces all over the country, not just at Menu Foods and the FDA, trying to get to the bottom of this nightmare. Friends and colleagues at UCDavis and CSU in particular are working very hard to find what's gone wrong. So much of the data found so far doesn't add up, i.e., "melamine", and how did it get into the food supply, and particulary the aminopterin. Hope it's all behind us soon and our little ones will continue to be happy and healthy and can safely eat the food they love. That's what's so tragic and devastating. Our little ones are doing nothing but eating their FOOD. Having a real hard time with that..

####anyway...BarbZ will get to your blog today. PROMISE!!

###LaurieH beautiful tuck-in last night, as always

###Nina, glad Butter is happy and I would LOVZE to get puppeeee kisses from her.

won't be able to watch any of the races today so y'all yell for me,okay?

In honor of Secretariat on his birthday:

A son of Bold Ruler out of Somethingroyal, by *Princequillo, Secretariat was a colt that no one thought could run the Kentucky Derby distance, a mile and a quarter, let alone the Belmont's mile and a half. Bold Ruler's foals grew up with a lot of speed, but their best distances were one mile or under.

He was a good looking colt, bright red with a thick neck, deep shoulders, wide sprung ribs with plenty of room for lungs and heart, and a powerful rear end. He was well balanced over all, and his legs were straight. You couldn't fault his conformation. He had a white star and strip on his face, and three white stockings to make him extra handsome. Given that his father was a premier sire and his mother, Somethingroyal, was the dam of more than one stakes winner, including Sir Gaylord, perhaps this plus his near perfect conformation should have foretold his future.

Secretariat's first race was on July 4, 1972, in a 5-1/2 furlong maiden race at Aqueduct. He was pinched back coming out of the starting gate, and nearly went down. There were more traffic problems on the turn for home, but he came charging at the leaders down the stretch to finish fourth. Not bad for a first start with bad racing luck.

He then won a maiden race and an allowance race. Trainer Lucien Laurin then moved the colt up in class, running him in the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga on August 16, which he won by three lengths, coming on strong at the end.

Secretariat finished the year by winning the Hopeful Stakes, Belmont Futurity, Laurel Futurity, and Garden State Stakes. He only lost one other race as a 2 year old, a disqualification in the Champagne Stakes because he ducked in at midstretch, bothering another horse. He had nine starts and seven wins, had won $456,404, and became only the third two-year-old to be named Horse of the Year, after Native Dancer in 1952 and the filly Moccasin in 1965. He was the only two-year-old to be voted Horse of the Year unanimously.

Secretariat won his first two starts as a three-year old: the Bay Shore and Gotham Stakes, both easily. But he was found to have an abcess on his gums just before the Wood Memorial Stakes on April 20. His trainer, Lucien Laurin, decided to run him anyway. Angle Light got off to a nice, easy lead and went on to narrowly beat Sham, while Secretariat came in third.

Secretariat entered the Kentucky Derby as the 3-to-2 favorite (in an entry with Angle Light), but people were not so sure he was the same horse he was the year before, after his defeat in the Wood Memorial. He came out of the gate near the back of the pack, then began passing horses on the first turn, caught Sham at the top of the stretch, and won going away by 2-1/2-lengths, running the first and only Derby in less than two minutes, 1:59-2/5 for 1-1/4 miles.

Secretariat's quarter-mile times for the Derby were astounding: :25 1/5, :24, :23 4/5, :23 2/5 and :23. He ran each quarter faster than the one before. No horse had ever accomplished this in a mile and a quarter race.

In the Preakness Stakes, jockey Ron Turcotte (who rode him in all but two of his races) was wise enough to detect the slow early pace, and encouraged the big colt to stretch out, and stretch out he did, moving to the front as the six-horse field entered the backstretch. Secretariat led the rest of the race, winning by 2-1/2 lengths over Sham. Pimlico's electric timer read 1:55 for 1-3/16 miles, a second slower than the track record. Clockers for the Daily Racing Form, however, clocked the race in 1:53-2/5. Several days after the race, Pimlico officials changed the time of the race to 1:54-2/5, saying that was the time clocker E. T. McLean Jr. had hand-recorded. The time of this race is still controversial, and many feel that Secretariat should be credited with yet another record for his Preakness win.

The morning of the Belmont, he was jumping out of his skin he was so fit, rearing and bucking in the walking ring, rolling his eyes and ready to run. Only five horses were entered in the race to challenge him. Secretariat and Sham both went after the lead at the start of the race and engaged in a six-furlong duel, clocked in 1:09-4/5, an incredible time for a mile and a half race, and the fastest such time in Belmont history. The speed duel finished Sham, who was injured and never raced again, coming in last in the race. With no competetion but himself, Secretariat ran like the wind, going the mile in 1:34 1/5 and the mile and a quarter in 1:59 flat, faster than his Derby time. He won the race by 31 lengths, an all-time record, while running the 1-1/2 miles in 2:24, knocking 2-3/5 seconds off the track record.

Secretariat was the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 25 years.

Secretariat raced nine more times, winning six, coming in second twice and third in his last race. His major losses were to Onion and Prove Out, both trained by Allen Jerkens (ever after known as the Giant Killer). Onion defeated him in the Whitney Stakes, when Secretariat was fighting off a virus, and Prove Out beat him in the Woodward Stakes, which was run on a sloppy track that Secretariat couldn't get hold of.

Secretariat retired to stud at Claiborne Farm, moving into his daddy Bold Ruler's stall. He sired 41 stakes winners, and became a noted broodmare sire, but never achieved the success at stud that he had on the track. Perhaps it is fitting that he remain the one and only Secretariat.

Secretariat was voted No. 35 among top North American athletes of the 20th century by Sports Century, the only non-human among them.

At age 19, Secretariat came down with laminitis, a very serious condition of the hooves. Everything possible was done for him, but he could not be saved. He was humanely put down, and buried at Claiborne Farm.

Dr. Thomas Swerczek, a professor of veterinary science at the University of Kentucky, performed a necropsy of his body. All of the horse's vital organs were normal in size except for the heart.

"We were all shocked," Swerczek said. "I've seen and done thousands of autopsies on horses, and nothing I'd ever seen compared to it. The heart of the average horse weighs about nine pounds. This was almost twice the average size, and a third larger than any equine heart I'd ever seen. And it wasn't pathologically enlarged. All the chambers and the valves were normal. It was just larger. I think it told us why he was able to do what he did."

Secretariat had a heart worth its weight in gold.

The story of Secretariat began with the toss of a coin in 1968 between Christopher Chenery of Meadow Stables and Ogden Phipps of Wheatley Stable. The idea of a coin toss came from Phipps, the owner of Bold Ruler, and Bull Hancock of Claiborne Farms as a way to get the very best mares for Bold Ruler, and when the toss went their way, to add well-bred fillies to their own broodmare band. Bold Ruler was considered one of the important stallions of his time. He could carry weight and go distances like no other horse. After his racing career, Bold Ruler was retired to Claiborne Farms but still was controlled by the Phipps family. This meant he would be bred to mainly Phipps' mares and not many of his offspring would find their way to the auction ring. Phipps and Hancock agreed to forego a stud fee for Bold Ruler in exchange for getting to keep one of two foals produced by the mare he bred in successive seasons or two mares he bred in the same season. Who obtained which foal or even received first pick would be decided by a flip of a coin.

In 1968, Chenery sent two mares named Hasty Matelda and Somethingroyal to Bold Ruler, and in 1969, a colt and filly were the result. In 1969, Hasty Matelda was replaced by Cicada, but she did not conceive. Only one foal resulted between Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal. As stated in the original agreement, the winner of the coin toss could pick the foal he wanted but could only take one, while the loser would get the other two. Both parties assumed Somethingroyal would deliver a healthy foal in the spring of 1970. The coin toss between Penny Chenery and Ogden Phipps was set for the fall of 1969 in the office of New York Racing Association Chairman Alfred Vanderbilt II with Hancock as witness. As Vanderbilt flipped the coin, Phipps called "Tails!" The coin landed tails up. Phipps decided to take the weanling filly out of Somethingroyal, leaving Chenery with the colt out of Hasty Matelda and the unborn foal of Somethingroyal.

On March 30, just ten minutes past midnight, Somethingroyal foaled a bright red chestnut colt with three white socks and a star with a narrow blaze. Almost immediately, the colt was thought to be too pretty, a title that would haunt him early in his racing career and then earn him fame for his beauty as a Triple Crown winner. By the time the colt was a yearling, he still was without a name. Meadow's secretary, Elizabeth Ham, had submitted ten names to the Jockey Club, and all ten were denied for one reason or another. Approval finally came with the eleventh submission, a name Ham herself picked from a previous career association, Secretariat.

The Triple Crown

The Kentucky Derby

Nicknamed Big Red, he won the Kentucky Derby by gradually moving up on the field in the backstretch, then overtaking rival Sham in the middle of the dash for home. Making Secretariat's Derby win more impressive is that Sham's time of 1:59 4/5 would have won any other running of the Kentucky Derby, before or since.

A lesser-known but perhaps more incredible accomplishment of his took place in that year's Derby. On his way to a still-standing record time in that race (1:59 2/5), he achieved the unheard-of feat of "negative splitting", running each quarter-mile (402 m) segment faster than the one before it. The successive quarter-mile times were: ''25 1/5, 24, 23 4/5, 23 2/5 and 23.

The Preakness Stakes

Secretariat didn't wait long to make his presence known in the Preakness. In last place as the horses moved past the stands, Big Red made a big leap forward on the first turn. CBS Television sportscaster Chic Anderson:

But HERE comes Secretariat, he's moving fast, and he's going to the outside he's going for the lead and it's right NOW he's looking for it!
Despite constant left-handed whipping by jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., Sham could not overtake Secretariat, who won by two and a half lengths. The main controversy of the race was its time. The infield flashed a time of 1:55. The Pimlico clocker had informed them that he had clocked a time of 1:54 2/5, while at the same time two Daily Racing Form veterans had clocked it 1:53 2/5 which was faster than the track record (1:54 by Caonero II). Two tapes of the horses were played side by side and were reclocked and slowly examined and Secretariat got to the finish line first on tape. The Maryland Jockey Club discarded both electronic and The DRF time and went with 1:54 2/5 as the official time. In some programs, both DRF and official time are printed.
* In 1999, the Maryland Racing Commission finally awarded Secretariat his rightful time of 1:53 2/5, thus setting the original race record in 1973.

The Belmont Stakes

Secretariat's statue at Belmont ParkOnly four horses joined Secretariat for the June 9, 1973, running of the Belmont Stakes, including Sham, who had finished second in both the Derby and Preakness. With so few horses in the race, and with Secretariat expected to win, no "show" bets were taken. Before a crowd of 67,605, both horses set a blistering early pace, opening a 10-length cushion on the others. But while Sham faded after the halfway mark (ultimately finishing last), Secretariat astonished spectators by picking up the killing pace eventually straining the television cameras' wide-angle capability as they struggled to keep the distant challengers in the same frame. Turcotte has said in documentaries that he could sense the horse wanted to be let loose, and he did so, letting the horse shift into "high gear" and run his own race.

In one of the best-known of American sports calls, Anderson later Belmont Park's track announcer punctuated Secretariat's powerful move on the final turn of the Belmont this way:

...Secretariat is blazing along! The first three-quarters of a mile in 1:09 and four fifths. Secretariat is widening now! He is moving like a TREMENDOUS machine! Secretariat by 12, Secretariat by 14 lengths on the turn! Sham is dropping back. It looks like they'll catch him today, as My Gallant and Twice a Prince are both coming up to him now. But Secretariat is all alone! He's out there almost a 16th of a mile away from the rest of the horses! Secretariat is in a position that seems impossible to catch. He's into the stretch. Secretariat leads this field by 18 lengths, and now Twice a Prince has taken second and My Gallant has moved back to third. They're in the stretch. Secretariat has opened a 22-length lead! He is going to be the Triple Crown winner! Here comes Secretariat to the wire. An unbelievable, an amazing performance! He hits the finish 25 lengths in front!"

In fact, the champion's winning margin was 31 lengths a distance it took careful examination of videotape and trackside photographs to measure. During Anderson's call of the stretch run, the CBS camera had to pull back to keep both Big Red and his opponents in the frame, and as a result caught a poignant image in TV sports history the backs of tens of thousands of cheering Belmont Park spectators cheering and applauding as Secretariat neared the wire. Almost as iconic as the still and video images of Secretariat blowing away the competition was the scene of owner Penny Chenery Tweedy waving her arms in exultation (and relief) in the Belmont owners' boxes. Anderson:

An amazing, unbelievable performance by this miracle horse and look at Mrs. Tweedy! (laughing) She's having the time of her life!
Secretariat's stride at the finish was so powerful that it took jockey Ron Turcotte nearly two furlongs to pull him up. His winning margin of 31 lengths in the long and grueling Belmont Stakes is remembered as one of the most dramatic events in thoroughbred racing history and one of the most incredible individual athletic achievements ever, both human and non-human. Time Magazine, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated featured Secretariat on their covers on June 11, 1973, the first to be featured on all three magazines' covers in the same week. Nobody expected the pure and absolute domination that Secretariat exhibited. If the Beyer Speed Figure calculation had been developed during that time, Andrew Beyer calculated that Secretariat would have earned a figure of 139, a figure that hasn't been touched before or since. [1] Bettors holding 5,617 winning on-course Tote tickets have never redeemed them.

Final race

After three more victories and two second-place finishes in 1973, Secretariat won his last race with another impressive performance. With jockey Ron Turcotte out with a five-day suspension, Eddie Maple rode Secretariat to victory in the Canadian International Stakes on grass and against older horses. He won the race by an impressive 6 1/2 lengths.

Altogether, Secretariat won 16 of his 21 career races and finished out of the money just once in his debut as a 2-year-old, when he was jostled coming out of the gate and finished fourth.

Honors and retirement

Secretariat was voted the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year, the most prestigious honor in racing, both as a two-year-old (the first horse so honored at that age) and as a three-year-old. Secretariat demonstrated his superiority on grass with a win in the Canadian International Stakes against the best horses his age and older from around the world. His performance on grass earned him the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Male Turf Horse.

His race records in the Derby and the Belmont stand to this day; his run in the Belmont is not only a race record but the world record for a mile and a half (2.4 km) on a dirt track. He set a new speed record in each of the Triple Crown races, the only horse in history to do so (although, as noted earlier, he was not officially recognized as the Preakness record holder until 1999).

ESPN listed Secretariat 35th of the 100 greatest athletes of the 20th century, one of three non-humans on the list.

In 1974, Secretariat was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Secretariat became a beloved figure with fans and non-fans of horse racing coming to see Big Red at Claiborne farm, where he stood at stud from 1974 through 1989, living in the same stall which was once home to his sire, Bold Ruler. Secretariat sired a substantial number of major stakes winners, including 1986 Horse of the Year Lady's Secret, 1988 Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Risen Star, and the 1990 Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule, who still holds the race record. His "failure"[citation needed] as a stallion was mostly due to his inability to produce offspring as great as he was an unrealistic expectation, even for a truly great horse. He sired as many as 600 foals during his retirement.

His blood flows through many other notable racehorses, including 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones, and he is most noted as a broodmare sire, being the broodmare sire of 1992 Horse of the Year and successful sire A.P. Indy, Secretariat's grandson through his daughter Weekend Surprise, who was sired by another Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew. Secretariat is also the dam-sire of the great stallions Storm Cat (by Storm Bird), through his daughter Terlingua, and of Gone West, through his daughter Secrettame.

In the fall of 1989, Secretariat was afflicted with laminitis, a painful and often incurable hoof condition. His condition failed to improve, and he was euthanized on October 4. He is buried at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. In death, he received the ultimate honor for a horse he was buried whole. By tradition, the only parts of a Thoroughbred buried are their head (to symbolize intelligence), heart (to symbolize strength), and legs (to symbolize power).

Before his burial, he was necropsied at the University of Kentucky; Dr. Thomas Swerczek, the veterinarian who performed the necropsy, found that Secretariat's heart was the largest he had ever seen in a horse approximately twice the size of a normal horse's heart. Dr. Swerczek states in correspondence:

"Certainly, after performing autopsies on several thousand thoroughbred horses, including mares and stallions, no other horse came close to Secretariats heart size. The second largest heart I found was the heart of Sham, who actually broke the Kentucky derby record, but still lost to Secretariat. Shams heart weighed 19 pounds. The third largest heart I found was stallion Key to the Mint, which was 16 pounds. The majority of all others were smaller, in the range of 10 to 12 pounds. Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat had an average size heart. The heart size seemingly is inherited from the female side of the pedigree. When I performed the autopsy on Secretariat, which was necessary because of insurance and we needed to determine the cause of the laminitis, the cause of destruction, I did a cosmetic autopsy. The reason being I did not want to dismantle such a remarkable specimen and the farm personnel and handlers were present to immediately collect all organs in large plastic bags which were immediately returned to the farm to be buried with the body. Normally, with other horses we can keep all organs and the body for further study, or to preserve large specimens, like the heart, but I was not allowed to do this with Secretariat. For this reason, all specimens were immediately collected and returned to the farm, and I did not get a chance to weigh the heart. However, by comparing it to numerous other hearts I got actual weights on, I am certain the weight was between 21 to 22 pounds. So I considered the heart weight officially as 21 pounds. The heart was in perfect shape, not diseased in any way, but just considerably larger than any other horses I autopsied." (see reference below)

A normal heart size for a Thoroughbred is 8 pounds. The great New Zealand race horse, Phar Lap, had a heart size of 14 pounds. This new information led the way for new research to be conducted on factors leading up to great thoroughbreds and the size of their hearts. Known as the X-factor, it leads to an enlarged heart size being given by the dam to her foal, even as she acquired it from her sire. This is why Secretariat was such a valuable broodmare sire. He passed on the X-gene to his daughters, who in turn passed it on to their offspring.

On October 16, 1999, in the winner's circle at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, the United States Postal Service honored the great horse, unveiling a 33-cent postage stamp with his image.

In 2005, Secretariat appeared once more in ESPN Classic's show Who's No. 1?. In the list of "Greatest Sports Performances" (by individual athletes), the horse was the only non-human on the list, his run at Belmont ranking second behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game.

As he came to the Belmont Stakes in June 1973 with a chance to become the first Triple Crown winner in a quarter of a century, Secretariat led the news headlines in North America. The Big Red Horse made the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated - something that hadn't happened before, or since.

In his book "The Most Glorious Crown," author Marvin Drager rounded up several clips from the millions of words printed about the Big Red Horse. Some writers, perhaps more used to human newsmakers, struggled a bit to define what was so phenomenal about Secretariat.

"He has a neck like a buffalo, a back as broad as a sofa," Time magazine reported. But Newsweek sports columnist Pete Axthelm, who never saw a racetrack he did not wish to attend, glided across the typing turf.

"Secretariat generates a crackling tension and excitement wherever he goes," Axthelm wrote. "Even in the kind of gray weather that shrouds lesser animals in anonymity, Secretariat's muscular build identifies him immediately; his glowing reddish coat is a banner of health and rippling power. Magnificent enough at rest ... when he accelerates ... he produces a breathtaking explosion that leaves novices and hardened horsemen alike convinced that, for one of those moments that seldom occur in any sport, they have witnessed genuine greatness."

While Axthelm was waxing poetic, pithy New York Post columnist Larry Merchant (now better known as HBO's sharp-tongued boxing analyst) clicked off his words in Broadway staccato:

"Secretariat," said Merchant, "is the kind of Big Horse that makes grown men weep, even when they are flint-hearted bettors, even when he goes off at 1-10. He is the apparently unflawed hunk of beauty and beast they search for doggedly in the racing charts every day, and never seemed to find. His supporters rhapsodize over him as though he is a four-legged Nureyev, extolling virtues of his musculature, his grace, his urine specimens." If he were to lose the Belmont, Merchant warned, "the country may turn sullen and mutinous."

The media explosion over Secretariat set an interesting benchmark in the coverage of horse racing. While the sport has never since enjoyed quite the fervor and anticipation in the press as it enjoyed in Secretariat's run up to the 1973 Triple Crown, the nation's media DID learn in that year how to turn out The Big Story about a horse racing hero. We've seen that this spring of 2003, as the New York-bred gelding Funny Cide made a run for glory in the Triple Crown.

In no way whatsoever are the stories of Secretariat and Funny Cide alike. They are horses from opposite sides of the railroad track. But if one was Equine Royalty, and the other is Equine Everyman, that's just part of the story that makes headlines.

Alex, sounds like you had quite a morning! I hope you are feeling better as the day goes on, never a dull moment! ha
May all of the horses be safe in the races and good luck to all of them.
I was busy yesterday faxing all of the committee members and Senators about how important HR503 and S311 are and that our American Horses will not be completely protected until these laws are passed. It is too long to post on here, but I put everything I had into it, so hopefully it will do some good.
The Plaque of Barbaro from the FOB's to Dr. Richardson is just beautiful and so heartfelt. Thanks to Dr. Richardson he helped Barbaro in all ways possible to stay with us as long as possible. May there be a cure for lamitis in the near future, God bless Dr. Richardson and the Bolten Center for helping to save lives.
You all have a wonderful weekend!

Good day to all -
Mr. Brown, I hope that leg feels better as the day progresses. Mornings are awfully tough with that kind of ache.
###
Barb AZ - Just posted again on your blog. That's very cool - as is the fact that you have dragged me kicking and screaming into the 21st century with this blog nonsense!! (Teasing!)
Safe trips to all horses today, and wings on their heels.
Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.
Now, my dog wants to play, and I have to go and do that! Looking forward to the races...
Love - Jean

Hi Susan E.,
I suggest sticking to an organic cat food brand to be sure you're not getting something yucky, at least 'till all this passes. The ugliness of mass produced pet foods is really surfacing. Maybe this will push them to clean up their act!

All the best, have a good weekend, enjoy the races or whatever sparks your fancy!

I don't really know why he came in last. I watched that race a few times. I think he just wasn't having the type of day to want to run. He seemed almost in slow motion there for awhile......

Lava Man :-( I feel bad about him but am greatful that he is OK and cooling down.... Hey look at it this way... To even GET entered into the World Cup a horse has to be one of the best in the world..... Lava Man is surly in that catagorie or he wouldn't have even been there in the first place..............

## Alex I must admit that I was a little worried there for a while toward the end of that race. Premium Tap was running pretty hard and then of course Invasor just gave us what he does best........ He wasn't going to let anyone win so he just turned it up and blazed across the finish line.... :-)

### Alex: Arnica gel. Get it at the health food store and rub in on your leg. It won't sting, bite, itch, smell--it's quite soothing. You may be a bit MORE sore for awhile but it will draw out the bruising (sounds to me like you have a deep bruise there) and you will feel better in a day or two.

Uh oh commercial again....

Posted by: LindaVA at March 31, 2007 9:09 PM

As much as I would have liked to see Lava Man win, I did not want to see him running in Dubai. Sounds like it was the owner's decision -- not the trainer's. I remember Frank Whitely being overruled by the owners of Damascus many years ago. Damascus was trucked off the track with a bowed tendon and obviously never raced again. I pray Lava Man gets home safely and in sound condition.

Yeah, the party "favors" in Dubai have been spectacle on an Olympic Opening Ceremony calibar...
Poor Lavaman...What up with that?

Love the little snip of Barbaro alive and being led down that incline by Dr. R....we have to stop thinking we'll "get over" this loss...it'll change over the years, but as someone else said earlier, The Boy shoulda been there....under Prado..

and I know the NTRA spot on laminitis fund is so poignant, but how many people who don't even know what laminitis is are seeing this spot? Learning about it? DONATING!!

Be interesting to see how much money it brings in....

Stupid question, but do they have special storage(for the lack of a better word) to house the horses on the plane, and is there a crew to watch over them during the flight?

Premium Tap had a devil of a time getting in the gate, which (to me) makes his performance the more impressive...he obviously settled down well after much struggling to get him in the gate!

And Edgar Prado just won AGAIN on A.P. Arrow - that's 5 wins and a place in 10 races - great day, Edgar...although I'm not sure I can cheer for you on Scat Daddy!

Good Afternoon Everyone!
I'm sooo glad to see that all of the runners today have come out of their races safely. I pray that those that still haven't run yet today are safe...all those across the Rainbow Bridge please keep them safe.

I saw one of the races from Dubai before I left for work today. My wife and I were watching and we saw the Barbaro Fund commercial. She got goosebumps and, well, I cried. That is the best commercial ever made. With God's blessing, and this commercial, laminitis will be defeated soon. How can it not be!

We Get It

Ok, if it can't be Chelokee, who is my second choice?? How about Adore the Gold?

In the World Cup I couldn't help myself with the tears AGAIN!!!!! Every commercial was all of the Champs and at the end Barbaro.... with Doc. I made it through a few of them but that was a very strong message..........

Love you Barbaro with all my heart........ You are on TV so much today... Man they are talking about you right now and I am about ready to break down but I WILL get through this......There will always only be ONE Barbaro and it surly appears from watching TV today that out of all of the Champs, you seem to be on top........ :-)

Scat Daddy is the favorite..... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Number 6 Chelokee is Michaels....

Who knows this is going to be a good race.... :-)

Nancy in CT- I hope Lava Man continues to do well in California, it just would be nice to see him shine outside of that state as well.

I like Stormello, Chelokee then Scat Daddy to show.
