Barbaro Updates: 254

updates are now here.

Update 1733: Tim wrote (comments timestamp: 11:27 pm):

Penny and I just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to the Easter basket and for all of the interest and support people have shown towards our stable. Obviously Alex's diligent updates on life at Fairhill has made some of our horses celebrities in their own right . We feel honored that you have taken such enjoyment from their daily activities and would welcome you to visit the barn during the Barbaro weekend. Luke loves peppermints but Grandma is on a fat free diet!

Update 1732: Steve Haskin provides his assessment of the Derby preps last weekend and notes that most of the Derby contenders are bucking some kind of trend this year: Kentucky Derby Trail: Nobiz All Biz as Trail Heats Up.

I just got off the phone with Sharon Crumb, who is organizing the Delaware Park Barbaro celebrations for April 29. The more we go over the events that are being planned, the more impressed I am of the scale of scope of what Fans of Barbaro is becoming. At this point it looks like close to 400 people are signed up for the activities. If you plan to attend, and have not contacted Sharon yet, I think she would like to know by April 15.

Update 1731: Another chilly start to the day for this time of year, although it does feel like it may warm up a little bit this afternoon.

I had a nice quiet day this morning, with only four to ride. I started with two of Tim's, Grandma and Nonpariel. Grandma went to the Tapeta track along with Tim on Real Lace. We galloped a mile and a half. I set off a few lengths behind Tim, and then once we had gone about a half a mile I moved Grandma up to sit within a length and a half of Real Lace. She went very nicely. Next was Nonpariel, who galloped a mile and a half on the dirt, upsides Quick Quest. Nonpariel is just such a nice horse to gallop. She floats across the ground, bows her head nicely and does not take too much of a hold. She went well.

I then took Hawty Creek across the fields. Like after her last race, I only gave her two days off and jogging across the fields is a good way for me to assess how she is after her race. She seemed to enjoy it and is feeling pretty good. She got plenty of grazing time afterwards as well as a good currying. My final one was Dash (who unshipped me the other day). He jogged two miles on the dirt track, and we both survived. My leg is now starting to feel a little better, for a few days there it was not getting any better at all. Lots of "heat therapy" over the last couple of days has helped.

While grazing Hawty Creek I made a couple of phone calls. Barclay Tagg reported all was well with NoBiz after his Wood win. He will try Funny Cide one more time against New York breds at the end of the month to see if Funny Cide still wants to run. Showing Up is scheduled to run at Keeneland on friday!

Update 1730: Jay Privman reviews last weekend's Derby preps in which the big guns (Pletcher and O'Neill) had mixed results at best, and Derby winning trainers (Tagg and Shirreffs) won major preps: Derby preps undergo shakeup, excerpts:

Tagg said he would like to see Nobiz Like Shobiz settle a little better in the Derby.

"It was his first time with blinkers on and he came away from there really, really sharp and got into a bit of a duel right off the bat," Tagg said of the Wood. "Hopefully, he'll learn from that and won't be that rank in the Derby. He came down the lane in [13.44 seconds], and that's not what you want to see in a champion-caliber horse. But yet, they need some of those dogfights if they're going to win the Derby too."

and

"I thought if he ran first or second, that would give us a chance to go to the Derby," said John Shirreffs, who trains Tiago. "For him to win like he did was such a huge leap forward. He wasn't pulling. He wasn't rank. He knows his job. He has the ability to accelerate when you pull him out."

There are now three graded stakes left before the Derby, two this weekend (Arkansas Derby and the Blue Grass) and one the following weekend, the Lexington, which given its proximity to the Derby (2 weeks) is rarely used by proven Derby contenders. Here are the current Graded Earnings Leaders.

Good morning Alex, thank you once again for this wonderful site and updates.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
with 10 inches of snow on my deck & it's snowing now this AM. 6-10" predicted for Thursday.

I hope the Jacksons understand the incredible community and action they started when they decided to try to save Barbaro. I hope it brings some consolation to know how their actions changed so many of us and how they and Barbaro have inspired us to do more and be the best we can. Dr. Richardson and Barbaro's connections are remarkable and they and our dear Barbaro have had an ongoing impact beyond belief.

I have met so many wonderful & dear people thanks to Bobby. You all enrich my life and I thank you.

Cheri, Viet & sweet, brave Hopat Mia, God Speed today. May today's report be what we are all praying for. Barbaro will be there for you.

Have a good day and make those calls. We can do this. Keep calling. Keep writing. There is no finish line.

When I am old
I shall wear diamonds
And a wide brimmed straw hat
With silver and leather on it
And I shall spend my social security
On white wine and carrots
And sit in the alley of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe…

I will sneak out in the middle of a summer’s night
And ride the chestnut mare
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow

When people come to call I will smile and nod
As I walk them past the garden to the barn
And show, instead, the beauty there
In stalls fresh filled with straw

I will shovel and sweat and
Wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel
And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who look down on me

They’ve not yet found the peace in being free
To love a horse as a friend
A friend who waits in the midnight hour
With nuzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am old

Good morning everyone, did Alie post any pictures of the Easter basket or the new sign at UPenn?

This is going to be a great day of calling and faxing, keep up the good work, we can get this done.

Over the weekend, I was able to get 4 new people involved in calling and faxing, the more the better. Most people don't know what is going on with the anti-slaughter issue. Please take a minute and let someone know what is going on with our horses.

Have a wonderful day, and be safe.

Good Morning FOB’s

While the Senate is expected to reconvene today, the House will not be back until the following week. Your congress people will be working in their local district offices until April 13. Most of their local offices should be close enough for you to pay them a personal visit. That can be extremely effective. So if any of you can find the time, go for it!!

It should be a lot easier to get this legislation passed while the slaughterhouses in this country are still closed. If we can make this happen, then they will never re-open!! As you all know, American horses are still being slaughtered……just in a different location.

NOW is the time to make our voices heard. Pro slaughter people are speaking out loud and clear but their arguments are starting to fade as the courts rule in our favor. Emotions are running high and most of our legislators are familiar with the recent developments. With the courts speaking out against these slaughterhouses, it may be easier to get our legislators on board.

Don't get discouraged if you don't see much movement on the co-sponsors. Recess does that.

We both appreciate all the support that you’ve shown to Stephanie in CA. Her program has proven to be quite successful. Please continue to support her and the others who have joined. There are still many states that are not represented and we must reach out to others to get on board. If you know anyone that might be interested, please contact Stephanie at sbreaux1@verizon.net

We have to remember that the human brain is not fully developed until at least 25 years of age. The college kids were working with what they have. They don't get it. Not worth getting upset over.

We have work to do today. The call list and even more important, call your own representatives and senators; they listen mostly to their own constituents. Some have emails that automatically delete all emails from people outside their states. That's why a call or letter is better than emails.

Keep calling.

We DO get it - do it for Barbaro, the inspiration for all we do.

Love you all,

Good morning to beloved Barbaro, sweeet spirit horse of forever!

Good morning to all Fans of Barbaro with pure hearts and noble intentions who strive to maintain the integrity of this board - our home - despite the attacks of the Evil One!

Every call or fax we make, every dollar we donate, every horse we save from the killer buyers, every person we educate about the horrors of slaughter, every step we take honors our beloved Barbaro, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson, Michael Matz & Peter Brette, Edgar Prado, and Alex - our heart and soul who endures much because HE GETS IT!

Today's call list is posted - please, take 15 minutes during your busy day to call or fax - all contacts are tabulated, INCLUDING after-hours voice mail messages for those who may be unable to make contact during business hours or who may be shy or insecure about having direct contact with these aides!

For the love of Barbaro, "DO RIGHT BY BARBARO"...it's all about the horse!

Love you always, Big Boss Horse!

#### PAMELA--Those articles are such an insult to all the students and staff of New Bolton, not to mention Edgar Prado. Obviously, those who wrote them are starved for the attention (Easter baskets!) NBC has received and will stoop to new lows to try to get it. I'm doubly-insulted since I happen to be from Ottumwa, IA! I figure in the time it takes to respond to their weak attempts at humor, I can compose another letter against horse slaughter!

Posted by: Dawn in Omaha at April 10, 2007 1:48 PM

Good Morning FOB Nation

Everyone's words this morning are lovely and touching; anyone reading them can tell how heartfelt they are.

Congratulations Round Pound on your well earned retirement. I'm sorry it had to be under these circumstances, but I know Mr. Matz and Mr. Porter love you and will take care of you. You will be healed and Barbaro will continue to watch over you and your babies forever.

Any FOBs in the Northern Virginia/DC area? We're in the perfect place to have a huge impact on these congressmen since they all live in our neck of the woods.

An idea, can anyone copy/burn/etc. any or all of the HS pictures and youtube stuff? Someone mentioned the other day, if only we could show them (Congress) the truth. We could make a cd/dvd for each member and send it to their offices. Someone would see it I'm sure. We have to keep our horses safe from harm...here and everywhere.

God Bless everyone.

Thank you Alex, Tim, Dr. R, Mr. Matz, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, and most importantly, Barbaro. You lived, loved and were/ARE loved. Without you dear boy, so much would not have been accomplished in so short a time.

This approach has shown positive results, as more reps have signed on to this legislation recently. We have to keep the momentum going!

To make an outright donation, just go to the Miracle Horse Rescue site and you can donate there.

The money for the Rosie Birth Pool was originally set up so the winner could apply it to the charity of their choice...personally, I hope the money goes to MHR and Rosie...but it is the winner's choice.

I hope to be the lady in the poem someday.
That was beautiful.

If you've navigated your way to the Rosie Pool thread on the Discussion all you have to do is post your pick. Don't worry about the money until after she foals. Then you send it to the charity of the winner's choice. Hopefully it will go to Miracle Horse Rescue for Rosie and the foal.

When Tagg says in the article above that Nobiz came down the lane in 13.44 seconds and that's not what you want to see, why is that? Was it too slow or too fast? Is he talking about the beginning of the race when Nobiz wanted to charge right up front?

Good morning everyone!

Alex - thanks for everything.

I was so sorry to see that Regal Band, the dam of Monarchos, died at the age of 20. She was in foal to an Empire Maker colt. It appears that she had a long-term illness.

Regal Band's owner, Jim Squires, is the author of Horse of a Different Color. Very good book...he's a real character. And you have to respect the way that Monarchos beat Point Given in the Derby.

I hope everyone has a great day today.

Wonderful web site for Affirmation Charms (and at a GREAT price with FREE shipping and handling, and NO minimum order). If you aren't familiar with Affirmation Charms, check it out, as this is the most comprehensive list I have seen, the best price I have seen ($6.99 each, in sterling silver), and how can you go wrong with free S & H???

Go to the bottom of the page (just above the "chain selections") to find the "Pull Down Menu" that lists all the options, such as "Believe", "Courage", "Faith Hope Love", "Joy" (the one I wear to try to remind myself to embrace the joy that is at my fingertips, if I choose to see it!), "Peace", "Wisdom", too many to count, and one that could be perfect for you.

You can string them on a chain, a leather cord, or whatever you have available.

If you are interested, they are worth a look. It's also a nice "read", as the site lists suggestions for what the "Affirmations" might mean to someone....no need to buy to get the message.

Rosemarie - If Rosie is restless, it's probably because she wants more food. She's been playing games with us for weeks now. I'm beginning to think this pregnancy is a myth.

I think the U Penn students would have a little more respect for their school. Some things just aren't funny.

I'm praying for the appy mare today. I hope she gets a better prognosis from the Equine Hospital than the regular vet was able to give. From the pictures and the fact that her temp went down and she's eating, it seems like she at least has a very strong will to live and she certainly has taken to Cheri. Good luck today and am anxiously waiting to hear the news.

Jonna, this is a recent post from Cheri on the discussion board:

Thank you for all your prayers and help. I wish you lived closer or few others who could help me in the barn.

I guess in my own silly way I saw some difference to it also. Most people have tunnel vision and only see straight in front of them so they dont get the whole overall picture whether its life, wounds or anything else. So when I look at her pics I see slight changes in it. It has to be 'healing' in some aspect if you will due to having IV meds and care. To what extent I am unsure.

I NEED to know the extent of the damage I am working with and the best course of treatment if she is to have a chance. If she can not sustain life of any quality and would be miserable and in pain long term then we know what the options are.

Ho'pats is eating, her feverish state is down, she is passing manure, she 'hops' over to the gate and knickers at me all the time, she is not lethargic as far as most horses would with an injury as bas as this one. She is alert, eating well, she does have a cough, she still has puss draining--good thing it is--and I wont give up till its time.

I do alot of herbal healings and I also use modern medicine but I still think that there are many other ways of healing that arent even tapped yet. I know that my 'gut' if you want to call it that but I call it my native ways show me there is something there and the horse will 'tell me' what it is she needs and as my uncle said yesterday in a private conversation that the horse has already told me that if I have to make the other choice she is at peace with it and that she 'understands'. Beleive me none of this has been without me shedding numerous tears while working in the barn.

I look back over what happened with Ernie and he would have been put down if I had not followed my gut and done many bags of IV fluids and waited to see what HE told me.

I will update to Mary or try to get here as soon as I get back in. I know the tests arent cheap but I think this mare is worth every dime. So we need to get more in the vet fund or they can donate directly to the vet if they want. I will take her up to EMA--she is not going to Oakridge. I needed to make sure everyone has the correct place where she is going and where the donations go to. It is on my website--www.horsefeathersequinerescue.org

MORNING REPOST

Glenda, thanks so much on the affirmation charms information. My assistant is going through something right now and I wanted her to have something that will help her along the way, help her keep her perspective, etc. She's a doll and so active in our cause. Making phone calls when she can, puts up with my rantings on slaughter, my annoyance when I can't get onto the site. She makes "goody" baskets for her nephew, Joe.

She was there when Barbaro passed, with an arm on my shoulder. A true friend.

Now, she's dealing with something and I want her to have some visible, tangible, reminder of what's important and give her strength.

Thank you Glenda.

CAVEL HORSES MAKE FT. COLLINS, CO FRONT PAGE!

Please add you comments to the following article about the Cavel horses being cared for at a northern Colorado rescue. It's a very favorable article.

http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070410/NEWS01/704100340/1002

My reply was as follows:

letmain hit the nail right on the head. Many people are urging Congress to pass legislation (S311, HR503) to stop the slaughter or transport of horses for human consumption, and one of the main reasons is the experience of the animals in transport and at the plant. They travel up to 36 hours within the US to the plants, without food or water. (Now, they are being hauled to Mexico or Canada.) Once there, they are put in kill boxes, where they smell the blood of other horses; at which point many go beserk and injure themselves and others further. Then, the captive bolt guns used to kill them often miss and have to be administered multiple times. Since the horse's brain is farther back in the skull than cattle, many do not remain unconscious, but are awake when they are hauled up by their hind legs and have their throats cut. No sentient being should spend their last days with this kind of suffering and terror.

Good morning!

I love the spectacular variety of people in Barbaro's family. There is something in each of you that attracts me and offers a point for admiration throughout my day.

There are the Poets, during which I sigh,

the Spiritualists who help me soar,

the Enthusiasts who radiate energy,

the Researchers who present information,

and the Efficient Orgnized Ones, who move me on to cook breakfast,

which I must do now!

Has anyone else received their Sean Clancy book on Barbaro yet? I must say it's a good read. I thought I had read all I could about the Barbaro story but this book offered some new thoughts and tidbits I hadn't read before. Many of them coming from Peter Brette and Edgar Prado. I didn't realize Peter was an ex-jockey (a good one at that!) He described the feeling of being on the back of Barbaro and how it made him want to race again. Anyway, if you haven't ordered your copy, you should do so.

See you in Deleware!

Pigs, cows and chickens are just pork, beef and poultry, and most Americans are OK with that. But a horse is a horse, of course, of course. We don't eat them; we don't let our dogs eat them; and if the Europeans want to eat them, it looks like they're going to have to eat their own.

"Horses are icons in American culture," says Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, which sued to shut down the U.S. butchers that supply horse meat to eager gourmands in places such as France and Belgium. "They took us into battle, provided us with transportation and even carried our mail. They shouldn't be sent to slaughter to be dismembered for overseas consumers."

In their long battle to stop the slaughter of American horses, animal rights advocates have evoked images of Seabiscuit, Barbaro, My Friend Flicka and Mr. Ed. But DeKalb's Cavel International -- the country's last remaining horse meat plant -- was defeated by a far less emotional argument. The U.S. Department of Agriculture failed to follow bureaucratic procedures when setting up a fee-for-inspection program, a federal judge ruled. The plant was recently closed, perhaps for good.

Mounting public pressure has reduced the number of horses slaughtered in the U.S. from 300,000 in 1990 to about 100,000 last year. Horse lovers would rather see unwanted animals euthanized at home than shipped off in crowded trucks to be herded into a "kill box" and rendered senseless with a "penetrating captive bolt" to the skull. Euthanasia and disposal can cost hundreds of dollars, but sending an animal to slaughter generally nets the owner about $400.

The American Veterinary Medical Association has declined to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, saying the methods used by the plants provided a humane way to deal with aged horses that might otherwise be neglected or abandoned. The slaughterhouses argue that the bill would hold them to a different standard than the corresponding link in the hoof-to-hamburger chain. It's a fair point.

Congress tried the back-door approach in 2005, refusing to fund the salaries of the USDA veterinarians who inspect the facilities. But the slaughterhouses cut a deal with the USDA to pay for the inspections, and the butchers were back in business.

Horse lovers were outraged. Former Rep. John Sweeney (R-N.Y.) called the action "a direct defiance of congressional intent." To which we can only say, if Congress intended to ban the slaughter of horses, it should have banned the slaughter of horses outright. Attempts to pass such a bill continue to come up short. But there's more than one way to ... oops, bad metaphor.

We'll admit to some ambivalence on this. Suffice it to say, the U.S. slaughterhouses are probably history, bill or no bill. Chalk up a victory for the People Who Don't Eat Icons.

Great to see the enthusiasm from the state leaders, we can make a difference. The senate is where the bill died last year so let's make every call count as they are back to work today.

Robyn H - Thanks for your concern, you are so thoughtful to be thinking of Over Enough.

Alex - great articles - I wish all horses bred to race could have breeders as responsible as Debonair Joe's. As a patron of Gulfstream and Saratoga (my husband is from there and we spend 3 weeks there every year)for over 25 years, I couldn't agree more with his article. I saw No Biz run in the Holy Bull and he was the picture of professionalism in the walking ring (which is very small and confining). In the Fountain of Youth, they were blaring music and it was 90 degrees and he was a mess. Glad to see him rebound. In fact the horse who ran second to No Biz on Sat. Sightseeing, ran the same day at Gulfstream (came in 3rd to Chelokee) and almost ran over Shug when they started blaring the music. Hope they become more fan and most importantly Horse Friendly. Thanks for your honesty Jason.

I still don't think the articles in the Daily Penn were good natured. I think they were very distasteful and make light of a situation that shouldn't be.

So much energy for the State Call Groups. WAY TO GO!!!!! This is our best chance to increase the numbers of co-sponsors needed to bring the Bills to the Floor for vote. It's fast, simple, the numbers are supplied. All you have to do is make an additional 2-3 calls per day and ask them to co-sponsor the Bills. Please join up with your state group and if one hasn't started....c'mon step up and get one going. Stephanie Breaux will gladly help get your state started and if you don't want to be a leader she will help with that too.

EQUINE HEAVEN...another wonderful, comforting narrative from you, and a special thanks for your sensitivity in giving Jules and Felix such places of honor!

DO RIGHT BY BARBARO - whether you are working as part of a state organization or operating as an "independent campaigner" please CALL-FAX-CALL today...it takes very little time each day to contact the committee members and your Congressperson and Senators...by fax, by phone, or by voice mail this evening! Please remember to thank your legislators who are already on board as co-sponsors...this is a simple way to keep the issue from fading from their minds!!!

Also remember to contact veterinarians (all the info you need is posted on the upper left of this page under the heading "Horse Anti-Slaughter Strategy." It has been a real eye-opener to discover that MANY vets do NOT support the pro-slaughter stance of their "umbrella organizations" and will sign the petition if YOU take a few minutes to provide it!

THE FANS OF BARBARO ARE AWESOME IN THEIR DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT!

Good Day Barbaro, Alex & all our FOB

At last the temps are starting to warm up & there is a wee bit of sunshine out there.

As the days draw closer to the Derby, I find I am increasingly sad & missing our dear Barbaro more than ever.

At the same time, I am in awe of all the great work being done in his name. As Equine Heaven often tells us, Barbaro is proud of all our efforts.

I am sure Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, as well as Dr. Richardson are also both surprised & appreciative of the work being done in Barbaro's name.

Alex, the sharing of your daily adventures make all of us feel close to you, to Tim, to the daily life of the horses you tend to.

And our dear, sweet Rosie. As she teases us with the impending birth of her foal, she brings a smile to our faces.

This is a wonderful place to be. If only the rest of the world could learn about caring, compassion & love like the people share here.

### Ashley--Have to agree with your assessment of the UPenn "spoof" articles. I enjoy a good parody, but really thought those were tasteless, and very reminiscent of some we've seen by national columnists who slammed this story. If it were me and two alums (who happened to own Barbaro) had just dropped a $3 million endowment in UPenn's lap, I think I would've had more class than to let those go to print, for risk of offending all involved.

REPOST - HELLO NEW JERSEY FOB'S. NO CHANGE SINCE YESTERDAY

The score is 7 vs 6. This is a good start but we can improve.

It's time to join the other states that have already organized a calling/faxing strategy to contact reps that haven't become co sponsors of HR503. Let's get the 6 NJ non co signers to join the 7 reps who have already co signed this legislation (SEE BELOW).

This approach has shown positive results, as more reps have signed on to this legislation recently. We have to keep the momentum going!

Please contact me at gingersnap@nj.rr.com if you can donate some time to this effort.

there is no doubt in my mind now
that Barbaro;s time here on earth is more then meets the eye
..he came for running--
an extraordinary athlete
owned by extraordinary individuals
,trained and ridden by extraordinary people
and treated in his injuries by extraordinary healers.
but he also came for what is beginning to happen in all corners of
the horse racing land.
and as we fans have discovered,
for what he has brought many to understand and seek and explore and
create.in their own lives
.his legacy grows liek a tree is fast motion...
.
i read some of the wonderful insights and articulate thoughts behind
the anti- slaughter issues on the forum
.there are remarkable folks out there
who have been working for years on these issues..selflessly and quietly
..there are brave owners of horses realizing suddenly,
that they are important in the mix of the consequences of their
decisions on their farms
..and that is personally so hauntingly brave
to read about their transformation
..it is brave
. those horse owners who are changing the way THEY LOOK AT HORSES AND
BREEDING.AND HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE HORSE OWNER..
FOR SOME OF US
W E ARE LEARNING HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE HORSE LOVER, OR RACE TRACK FAN
OR TV VIEWER AND OTHERS
HOW TO REACH OUT AND ADOPT A LOCAL RESCUE FARM AND OR LOOK AT
RETIREMENT FARMS WITH NEW EYES.
.THE EXCELLER FUND AND HOW RACING FANS REALLY STEPPED UP TO HONOR THIS
GREAT HORSE WHICH IN THE END THEY DISCOVERED HAD BEEN SLAUGHTERED
..
there are so many incidents of creativity and new resolve to reach deep
and do a little thing
..small is beautiful= the nature of faith
..
this is some journey
for me
Barbaro;s story and his life
has not shut out the rest of the world.
in fact
it has made me even more sensitive to the plight of the voiceless around
the world.
and makes some humans espec. some politicians
look clumsy and wooden
somehow Barbaro;s voice is stellar
and i read of so many remarkable horses.overcoming incredible odds.
.maybe i would not have heard about them if it were not for Barbaro
.Ruffian, rosie,cody,hawk..hawty creek,round pond..fitch-- seabiscuit,
smarty jones..afleet alex..
the list goes on..in small famrs--like
joe;s tb farms..--hero.hero
hero,heroes--heroes..heroines..heroines..
quiet ,still powerful,--pure...

carl sagan and albert einstein agreed
that there is
in the visibble and invisible realms,
..a connectedness with nature and the cosmos.
.we are all connected to Barbaro and to all the horses who now are piled
high in the feed lots to starve
..there is no end to cruelty that human's inflict upon them or upon
each other.whether here in our land or fr far away..
on this day with the sun shining
i am so grateful
to work
for barbaro;s voice
he of the
.. the sky
of the grass
of the hay...
.in every horse..in every eye..and heart..here
..in this place
here so many of us come to
.for the light
then,

I don't know if I want to read it from your descriptions but where can I see the spoof by UPENN.

I of course have not read it, but I agreed that anyone that do spoofs of sensitive things need to type it, think about it for about a month, read it for another two months, and then NOT DO IT. You can be guaranteed that there is always someone that gets hurt. Golden Rule applies, "Do until others as you would have them do unto you."

Update on the Critically Injured Appy Mare at Horse Feathers.

First, I misspelled her Name, her name is Ho'Pats Mia (meaning Sacred Female in Lakota)

She will be going to the Equine Hospital tomorrow morning for evaluation and ultrasound and xrays to determine IF her leg has a chance. She is still listed as Critical. But Ho'Pats Mia is showing she wants to FIGHT and live, in all her Pain, she has shown NO aggression, Cheri is able to clean her wounds without sedation and she allows it, and her appetite has been good!! She is a True Spirit Horse.

RE: The Good News about Senator Spector
The Senator's Aide had called me today, and he was very very kind and patient. He asked me about the court decisions, and I found my notes and read the information so that I would get it right.

We discussed the transport to Canada and Mexico, and the horrible treatment and conditions.

He then told me that the Senator is cosponsoring the bill. I thanked the aide profusely, and asked him to convey my deep appreciation to the Senator. I also asked him to reassure the Senator that our family will continue to support him at the polls; and that we wish him well in his pursuit of another term.

I saw earlier postings about this, and am so glad that there was a chance to celebrate on this board.

Shelley A., I believe that your knowledge and your contacts with the Senator's office helped a great deal, and I thank you for your efforts.

I do hope that Senator Casey will join his colleague in cosponsoring. I haven't spoken with his office in the past couple of weeks.

Colorado FOB's:

Stephanie has contacted someone who is organizing a calling group in Colorado. She can give you that person's contact information if you e-mail her at sbreaux1@verizon.net. Some of you may already have done so, but wanted to get the word out to as many as possible. It will be great to organize a group in CO!

Love to all. Forever Barbaro and all that he has inspired,

Hi Alex and FOBs -

As always, thank you Alex for this board where we can gather.

Along with our most important daily strategy to follow, Debra and I would like to ask any of you in Wisconsin to please join in calling/faxing/e-mailing our own WI Senators and Representatives, (and spread the word to others that may not visit here.) We have seven going full speed at the moment, and that's great, but more would be greater.

It is a crucial time, and we can't lose our momentum now. We have to show our government we are serious and it not a passing whim....it is a committed effort. I don't know how you all feel, but Barbaro is alive and well in my heart and keeps me going with our contacts.

Please contact Wisconsin representatives and let them know how you feel regarding HR 503 and S.311. We HAVE to do this for the horses.... We have to speak for them and save them.

Thank you.
Pam

Hi FOB's!

###
Shelley, thanks for the update on Sen. Specter. He had me worried for a while there. Now to work on Sen. Casey.

###
Martita, again, you sew a magical quilt with images of eternity and interconnectedness.

###
MaryL, just saw the updated pics of Ho'pats leg and to my eye, the improvement is stunning. When I send Reiki to her, I feel her love and trust for Cheri (and for all those who are praying for her). This wisewoman horse is showing the same determination and adaptability that Barbaro showed while at NBC.

###
KenZ, my condolences on the loss of Jules. Saw his presence acknowledged at Equine Heaven.

More later. Will try to be on chat tonight after yoga teacher class.

Healing, Love, Peace,
ONS,
Lyn Gilbert

Haven't read any posts yet - please excuse me if this is old news already; but even if so - I want to keep spreading this news. Have also posted (with more links) at Forum/DB under Horse Rescue Issues, thread "7 Cavel Horses Going to Dankai Sanctuary"

CAVEL MIRACLE SURVIVOR UPDATE

SEVEN of the Cavel Miracle Survivors are safely at Denkai Sanctuary (Carr OK)

This is a different group than the 9 Cavel Survivors who went to Fair Dinkum. (Ten survivors were headed there; sadly a 30-yr old succumbed to colic before the trip. He died surrounded by loving people.) Here's a link to a thread at the TWR Forum/DB with update and links to pics of some of the survivors now safe at Fair Dinkum.

http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=7293.41

We now know where 17 of the Cavel Survivors are; 16 still alive. Whew! And per the story below, the rest of the survivors are headed to rescues in Wyoming, Texas and California.

Here's the story (from the Coloradoan-online) about the 7 who went to Denkai:

Seven horses arrive after court halts Illinois facility's operations
By LAURA BAILEY
Laurabailey@coloradoan.com

Call him a miracle or just plain lucky.

Either way, Survivor, a half-blind, 30-year-old quarter horse scheduled for slaughter a week ago, will live to see another day.

On Thursday, he and 30 horses awaiting their deaths at a slaughterhouse in Illinois were spared when a last-minute federal district court ruling halted operations at the plant.

Since then, Survivor and six of his companions, whose meat would have been used for human consumption abroad, have arrived at the Denkai Animal Sanctuary in Carr. There, they will be nursed to health and adopted out to new homes in the coming months.

The horses' tale starts in Wyoming, where an owner sold the herd to a slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Ill., owned by Cavel International Inc. Until last week, the company, which provides horse meat to Europe and Japan, was one of the last operating horse slaughterhouses in the country.

On March 29, the horses had reached the plant and were in kill pens when the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled in favor of halting the U.S. Department of Agriculture' s practice of providing meat inspectors to horse slaughterhouses. Congress previously voted to end funding for such inspections in 2005, but the USDA implemented a rule allowing inspections for plants that paid a fee. After the district court ruling, the owner of Survivor's herd contacted the Humane Society, who paid for their transport back to a stockyard in Cheyenne, Wyo., and began arranging for their transfer to animal rescue organizations.

"We are completely thrilled that we had the opportunity to get these guys out of harm's way," said Nancy Perry, the Humane Society vice president of governmental affairs who flew from Washington, D.C., last week to help relocate the horses.

Perry said she hopes the case will galvanize the public to support a ban on horse slaughter. Currently, there are bills in the Senate and House that would permanently ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the United States.

Many in Survivor's herd, which the Humane Society has dubbed the Miracle Horses, were injured during their journey to and from Illinois. Some have puncture wounds and gashes after spending time in cramped trucks where they were prone to kicking and fighting.

Some are skinny and malnourished. And four of the 30 had to be put down for various reasons, Perry said.

On Saturday, seven of the more fortunate horses came to the sanctuary in Carr, where they will be cared for until they are adopted. The other survivors will go to rescues in Wyoming, Texas and California.

Floss Blackburn, executive director of the Denkai Sanctuary, said despite common beliefs about slaughter horses, many of the Miracle Horses were young and relatively healthy. Most were younger than 16, she said, including Sweat Pea, a 2-year-old Arabian filly, and May, a skinny, 7-year-old mare.

Blackburn is not sure why such young horses were sold for slaughter but she said it is not unusual for uninformed owners to sell a pet horse to sale barns, which in turn sell the animals to contract buyers who send them to slaughterhouses.

It will be a month before the Denkai horses are healthy enough to be adopted, but Blackburn believes all seven will make a complete recovery.

"It's just a matter of time and food and TLC," she said. "They need 30 days for their wounds to heal and their weight to come back before they go to a home, but we can line those people up now."
