Barbaro Updates: 267

updates are now here.

Update 1827: Xchanger, who many saw yesterday at Fair Hill is still being considered for the Derby: Maryland-Based Xchanger Likely for Derby. Jeannine Edwards and the ESPN crew are now at Churchill ESPN at Churchill Downs.

Update 1826: Mike Jensen attended our celebrations yesterday, this is what he wrote: Fans of Barbaro gather to celebrate his birthday.

The work tab this morning for the Derby included Steve Asmussen's pair: Curlin, Zanjero Work for Asmussen as Derby Week Kicks Off and Hard Spun: Hard Spun Blazes Five Furlongs in :57 3/5. Clearly Hard Spun's work was fast!

Update 1825: This is a real treat, Barbaro's baby brother, at 7 days old, narrated by Headley Bell: Video of Barbaro's new brother.

Update 1824: Additional media coverage from our celebrations yesterday: Wilmington News Journal Remembering Barbaro, Daily News Barbaro's spirit lives: At Delaware Park, fans join to honor fallen colt and WJZ Fans Gather To Honor Barbaro On His Birthday.

A quiet morning this morning at Fair Hill. I only had four to ride, which suited me after the weekend festivities! First was Quick Quest, he went to jog two miles on the dirt track, his first day out after a breeze on saturday. Tim jogged Who's Happy, she is running tomorrow at Philadelphia Park. My next horse was Tim's Whip Smart. She went out back and galloped across the fields. She was very relaxed and seemed to enjoy it. My final two included a half mile breezer on the dirt track. The filly breezed well and may be making her first start soon. Nice weather this morning to add to the pleasantness of having an easy morning.

Update 1823: Wendy's photographs from sunday afternoon's events at Delaware Park: my afternoon at Del Park photos (they showcase at least one surprise guest).

Update 1822: It will take a few days to fully process this weekend's celebrations, in the meantime here is some more coverage, this time the Thororoughbred Times: Barbaro's birthday celebrated at Delaware Park.

During the formal remarks, Jeannine Edwards read out a note from Edgar Prado, here it is:

BARBARO..... WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NAME TO PRONOUNCE. HE GAVE ME THE BIGGEST THRILL IN MY LIFE.... (SECOND ONLY TO MY KIDS BEING BORN.)

HE CHANGED THE LIVES OF SO MANY PEOPLE.... NOT ONLY BECAUSE HE WON THE DERBY, BUT BECAUSE OF THE HEART, COURAGE AND WILL TO LIVE HE SHOWED, EVEN AGAINST THE ODDS.

HE NEVER GAVE UP, HE FOUGHT SO HARD EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. HE TAUGHT US THAT TO GIVE UP IS NOT AN OPTION.

HE BEGAN THE FLAME OF HOPE THAT NEARLY ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.... BUT WE MUST PUT OUR HEARTS INTO IT, IT IS UP TO US NOW TO ENSURE THIS FLAME WILL NEVER BE EXTINGUISHED.

WE HAVE TO REMEMBER HIM AS A TRUE CHAMPION AND A FIGHTER. THOSE WHO SAW HIM SAW GREATNESS.... HE LEFT HIS MARK ON HORSE RACING.

TO ALL THE FANS..... THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT THROUGH THE ROUGH TIMES. YOUR CALLS, EMAILS, AND LETTERS REALLY HELPED ME STAY ON MY FEET.

BARBARO BROUGHT A LOT OF PEOPLE TOGETHER... PEOPLE THAT REALLY LOVE THE SPORT, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, REALLY CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS. BARBARO STOLE THOSE HEARTS FOREVER.

THANK YOU FOR BEING LOVING, CARING PEOPLE. WE HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE STILL GREAT FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD. WE MUST CONTINUE TO RAISE OUR VOICES TOGETHER..... ESPECIALLY IN THE NAME OF A HORSE THAT WE LOVED SO MUCH AND WHO BROUGHT SUCH JOY INTO OUR LIVES.

BARBARO IS GONE, BUT STILL LIVES IN OUR HEARTS, AND WILL FOREVER. THANK YOU BARBARO FOR MAKING ME A BETTER PERSON. THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THE RIDE OF MY LIFE. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY DREAM COME TRUE. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME LOVE YOU.

I MISS YOU, MY FRIEND, AND ALWAYS WILL. HOPE TO SEE YOU DOWN THE ROAD AND WE CAN BE REUNITED FOR ONE MORE RIDE.

EDGAR PRADO

The Derby work tab was very busy on sunday. Pletcher worked his five contenders, with Angel Cordero in the irons for those working at Keeneland: Steve Haskin's Derby Report: Pletcher Bids Farewell to Keeneland. Tiago , Stormello, Dominican, Tueflesburg and NoBiz were among others that worked: Nobiz Like Shobiz Zips Five Furlongs at Belmont Park.

Comments

Good morning Alex and FOBs.
It sounds like everyone had a wonderful time at the birthday celebrations! What a great way to pay tribute to Barbaro!
Edgar's words are so moving; it's obvious how much he cared for Barbaro.
I was unable to attend any of the celebrations, but my family and I did observe Barbaro's birthday by watching...hockey. :((Oh, well.)
Everyone enjoy Derby Week!

Good morning to all my friends here!

Such wonderful words from Edgar have me tearing up this morning. It was such a comfort to spend a few hours yesterday with my fellow Maine FOBs. We are a mighty force and we will win the wars against laminitis and horse slaughter.

I know this will be a difficult week for all of us. Treat yourselves and each other gently. We can get through all the memories - just focus on the good ones.

Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, for sharing your most excellent horse with us. Thank you, Michael and Peter, for training him so well and valuing his remarkable talents. Thank you, Edgar, for honoring Barbaro. Thank you, Dr. Richardson and all at New Bolton, for all you do for ALL animals. And, thank you, Tim and Alex, for giving us a home. A standing ovation from me for all of you!

Proud Fan of Barbaro forever

Thank you, fellow FOB, for a wonderful Sunday afternoon. You are all heroes for doing what you do and working so hard to make changes. Count me in to help here in Northeast PA!!!

Thank you Alex. You were a great host!

Thanks, Sharon and staff of volunteers for putting together such a phenomenal event!

It was great to see Allie and Rachel from Kennett Florist and their staff; along with some of the FOB I read messages from!

Jeanine Edwards proved that not only was she was honored to be reporting the story of Barbaro, but that she loved him, too!

Edgar Prado's words were wonderful. He is a true gentleman and I'm sure Barbaro was honored to be with him, too!

And the appearance of the Jacksons started my tears and they never stopped!

P.S. I cried a good portion of the way home from Delaware Park to Wilkes Barre!!! Missing him so much!

Good Monday Morning FsOB,

I hope everyone returned home safely from whichever Barbaro birthday party they attended. I can't wait to see all the pictures from Del Park and read all the FOB stories. The Tampa Bay Downs celebration was AWESOME!! I'm sure many of those who attended will post pictures and stories. Thanks to Tampa Bay Downs for the beautiful tribute they paid to Barbaro by having the first annual Barbaro birthday race. After the race they showed Barbaro's picture on the screen, highlighted his achievements and then announced the presence of the FsOB and many of the achievements that have been accomplished including the fight against horse slaughter. If horse racing fans didn't know about horse slaughter before, THEY DO NOW. The biggest thrill, though, was meeting the wonderful FsOB and sharing our love for the big guy.

Now - back to reality! Let's resume the fight to end horse slaughter.

Have a great day all!

Good Morning FOB's,

What a fabulous weekend. We still can’t believe how many wonderful people we met. We’re sure that you’ve already gotten the details by now and hope everyone had a safe trip home. Now it’s time to go back to work…..for BARBARO!!!!!

We are still out of town but will check in tomorrow with our contacts for the latest strategy. In the meantime, keep calling your representatives to co-sponsor and support HR503 and S311.

We got TONS of press this weekend for our cause……now is the time to strike!!! Congressman Mike Castle was at Delaware Park for the festivities. He urged us to keep making those calls and get the others on board.

Please make sure, as usual, that you check the co-sponsor list and do NOT call those already with us!

We’ll have more substantial information sometime this week.

Again, thanks for everything.

Have a great day,

Shelley and Debra

Hiya, FsOB! Wendy and Alex, thanks so much for sharing the DelPark slide show. What a fabulous event, sure wish I could've been there. Mike Rea looks like he's making a super recovery.

I echo Marg in Maine's comments from earlier this AM. I have a wild work week both this week and next and need to pace myself emotionally for this coming Saturday. May you all be gentle with yourselves as well! Peace, RMH

Good Morning, FsOB's!

What can I say about yesterday? It is a time that I will treasure for the rest of my days. I got to meet some wonderful, kind, compassionate people and I am so grateful to Barbaro for just having been here.

We truly are a force to be reckoned with - NBC - the network - is now probably aware of the force that we are.

Harriette, Eva, LaurieH, Martita, Daryl, Susan, Jennie, Margaret - it was such a pleasure to meet you and talk with you. If I've left anybody out, its because I'm still processing everything that happened yesterday. Becky, sorry I couldn't spend more time with you and Stan yesterday...

Edgar's note did me in. Seeing the Jacksons did me in. The documentary did me in. Seeing Michael Matz at Fair Hill yesterday REALLY did me in. I haven't cried yet, but probably will let it all out on the plane tomorrow (will be in the UK till 5/6) - hopefully British Airways will have a movie I can watch where I can cry.

Alex, you looked very handsome in your suit yesterday - you should be proud of everything you have accomplished over the last year. I have had the pleasure of meeting some people who I truly respect in the last year and you are most assuredly part of that small group.

Yesterday all I saw was love, respect, compassion, kindness and commitment. And its enough for me - I will have such stories to tell my grandchildren.

And that is why we are living in the first place - to embody these qualities and show others what can be accomplished when we are guided by those ideals.

I love all of you.

ONS,
Lyn Gilbert

The hockey game went into overtime, so we didn't get to the The Nation's Horse. I was sooooo upset about that.

How we must continue our fight for the horses, keep calling and faxing. I did alot of the over the weekend, just to honor Barbarao.

Wow...what an incredible Sunday we had! Starting at Fair Hill and ending with First Saturday in May...I'm still overwhelmed.

Alex - Thank you SO much for the awesome time at Fair Hill and for all that you've done for us. It was great to finally meet you and to get to chat for a bit!

Sharon - You did an AWESOME job with everything! It was great to meet you too!

To everyone involved in the planning and organizing of our Celebration - THANK YOU!

I just want to say what a really great group of people the FOB are! I wish I had gotten to meet more of you, but there were just so many people. But those I did meet were such genuine, caring people and it really did feel as if we had all known each other for years.

I know all of you that couldn't be there with us were there in spirit!

I hope everyone has a great day today!

Sadly I was unable to attend, but our FOB family is so wonderful. With the pictures and the posts of how wonderful everything was, I feel I was a part of it, even though I wasn't there.

Thanks to Sharon and Alex for a stupendus job. Something so grand and meaningful takes many hours to create, and they did it with love.

I just read Edgar's words.... Amazing man.

Now on to continue the torch Barbaro lit, to save his sisters and brothers. I'll always love and miss him. But I'll keep his spirit alive by fighting to save others because of him. I feel graced that Barbaro crossed my path and grabbed my heart.

##

Good morning everyone,

Happy Birthday Gallant Secret!

Thanks again Wendy for posting the photos from the Celebration. To all of us not able to be there, it was great to see all that occured and to see so many amazing pictures.

Let's continue to make the calls we need to make to get more co-sponsors on board in DC. This week is very important, as the Derby approaches, and more emphasis is put on Barbaro, plus we just received an incredible amount of publicity so now is truly our time.

Take just a few moments today (and it REALLY IS just a few moments) to make some calls. Then, look for futher instructions later this week from Shelley and Debra for our next step. Until then, continue to try to get more co-sponsors.

Alex & Sharon, I wasn't at the celebration this weekend but one doesn't have to have been there to know what an awesome job you did. Applause to you!

Lyn, have a wonderful time in England!

The hockey game ran over the NBC show "Barbaro - A nation's Horse". Does any one know if and when it will be broadcast again?

Posted by: chris byers at April 30, 2007 2:01 PM

Wow what an emotional note. Thanks for posting it Alex. Yesterday was such a sad day with a haze of hope all around. Spending the day with 6 Nurse Mare Foals really was the uplifting experience I needed. Having 6 tiny noses sniff and then wipe their milk in my hair had me laughing til I cried. Those tiny little babies already love people so much, they will be the luvky ones, to never to know the otherside of humans. All because of Bobby, he is their savior.

###Thank you Wendy for posting your pictures, they were great and had tears many times.

##Alex, what a dapper gentleman you are.

I know you had a grand time at your birthday party with your equine frens, and your earthly frens...One thing for certain WE ALL LOVE YOU.!!!
Have a wonderful day.

Happy Birthday Gallant Secret.

Good Morning Fans/Family

Saw the wonderful pictures and you see all the love and compassion that everyone has for each other and for our loved Barbaro...Thank you.

Please come back safe!

While the iron is hot...let us floor them with emails, faxes, and calls. We are making progress and have the greatest opportunity to stop horse slaughter, and stop the dreadful trips over the border. More brutal than ever..

We speak for the ones that cannot speak for themselves, we hear their cries, we hear their pleas, and we will make progress and help Barbaro's beloved sisters and brothers.

Remember the Fallen Angels, the rescues, the ones suffering, human as well as animal, we are family of love...We live in the House that Barbaro built, on solid rock.

Blessings to all...Have a lovely day!!

# The Barbaro documentary is to be aired May 4 at 9:00 pm on CNBC. I believe it is also scheduled to be shown on the Universal High Definition Channel at various times.

# Those of us left at home spent quite a few hours blasting NBC's poor programming plans. I was fortunate enough to see the documentary last night at 10 pm on the universal high def channel. It is a classy, wonderful, well-done piece of work.

It's a shame that NBC originally scheduled it after a stupid hockey game where it takes men over four hours to get enough stupid pucks in the net. It is even more a shame they have chosen to air it on channels where many, many people will not be able to see it.

###Margie

It said espn.com for today, so I'm assuming (you know how that goes) that it will be via the web.

I tried to do a search, but couldn't find anything. I will e-mail UPenn and see if they have any additional information.

If I can find a link, I will post it.

Hope this helps.

Now the ooopss is on me.
Saw the 2nd post, but I will try to get more details, searching espn is not an easy find.

Good morning FOBs. Good morning, sweet Spirit of Barbaro.

I am so thankful to Alex and all FOBs who were blessed to attend the celebration at DelPark this weekend. I vicariously gobbled up all your reports over the weekend and imagined I was there, too. All of us were there in heart and spirit. Thank you so much for sharing the joy of the experience with us.

Edgar's words so moved me this morning. Moved me to tears, in fact. Proof positive again that this horse we all loved so much was surrounded by truly special, God-given people. What a privilege to be counted among his friends.

Have a good day, all of us! Let's keep going.

I surely "get it"!!

What a glorious weekend at Del Park to celebrate the life of our beautiful champion colt Barbaro.

Alex and Sharon, thank you for everything!! An unforgettable time!!

So wonderful to meet so many of the people who I have only spoken to through words before. I felt love from each and every one of you. And equally wonderful to meet new FOB's from all over the country (and world)! And Sabina, Jeannine, and Eduardo (thank you for signing my hat)!!

I will start editing the video right away, that my husband and I shot of the entire weekend, so that it can be shared with all--the FOB's who were there, and those that couldn't be there. I promise not to come up for air until it's done and done right!!

Barbaro--you were honored this weekend in a way that was fit for the hero that you are. Forever in my heart, sweet colt!!

Thanks to everyone for sharing their terrific accounts of the birthday celebration at Delaware Park. What a heartfelt way to honor Barbaro and all the people whose lives are now forever intertwined with his.

There's a line from an old hymn,

"Ever blessing, ever blessed."

That is the essence of Barbaro for all of us who "get it."

Thank you Alex from the bottom of my heart and thank you Sharon and everybody else who worked so hard to make the even at Delaware Park a success. It was wonderful meeting fellow FOB's including someone who lives practically down the block from me lol. Everything was perfect including the weather. Mrs Jackson is even more beautiful in person and you could just feel the warmth from all in attendance.
On the way home i spotted a beautiful rainbow - could that be the bridge that Barbaro and the view-crew used getting back up to Heaven?
Thank you all again - it was wonderful. hope maybe we could do it again

Hope you don't mind if I crosspost from tbfriends. Stories like this inspire me to keep plugging along doing whatever I can do.

Monday, April 30th... On their way to Iraq, but first they collect funds to pay for new rubber mats. Our mare motel is built on a gravel pad, and mats are a must. Cathy and I did the pricing. Mats are heavy and expensive. We were going to mat one stall at a time, whenever cash magically appeared in our checking account. But along with Friends Of Tbfriends, The 312 Airlift Squadron came up with enough money to mat 5 of our stalls. We were speechless, and if you ever met me you know what a feat that is. The following left for Iraq last Thursday. Cathy and I wish you much safety, and you have our daily prayers.

Jeanine McAnaney. Ruth Meyer. Rod Chiapusio. Rod Carpenter. John Bever. Tim Corcoran. J.P. Bordewick. Scott Curtis. Darryl Markonski. Mike Drew.

Think about it. Before flying off to an unimaginable situation, The 312th Airlift Squadron first pulled out their wallets so horses in Woodland, California can be comfortable. I will never forget this story for as long as I live. The ultimate in giving.

Members of Friends Of Tbfriends also pitched in. Ann Marini. Robert Lipsky. Anne Harrington. Christina Kampman. Teri & Dana Paquette. Karen Webb. Cora & John Adelizzi. Mike & Kathy Monaghan. Laura Langford. Lisa Roberts. Marie Jankowski. Jamie Coughlin. Rick & Franca. Teri Sherman.

Cathy and I thank you from the deepest part of our hearts. We are overwhelmed with your kindness.

I would also like to take this time to tell you about Hannah Walsh. Hannah is 13 years old, and she lives in Pleasanton. Hannah has been baking incredible tasting horse cookies, and selling them for cash. And yesterday Hannah and her mom Stephanie brought us the cash. An envelope with $128.00. We will use the money to buy a doomed horse at public auction. Hannah and her warmblood gelding Ben spent Saturday competing at a show in Elk Grove. She has been riding for the last 5 years. Her horse cookies will melt in your mouth. I ate two myself. Hannah is willing to share her recipe, and here we go:

One cup oats or uncooked oatmeal
One cup flour
One cup shredded carrots and apples
One teaspon salt
One 1/2 tablespoon sugar
Two tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup molasses

Mix all ingredients together. Form small balls and place on a greased cookie sheet. Pat them down lightly. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

I am almost certain it is the extra vegetable oil mixed with sugar that makes these cookies so delicious. Even the old gelding Hottie, who is grumpy and picky, gobbled up these cookies.

A 13 year old girl sells cookies so she can bring us cash to buy a needy horse. An Air Force Unit helps with the purchase of our rubber mats. We begin a new week thanking our lucky stars. The road has often been detoured, and a thousand times we almost gave up. Thank you all for helping our horses. And for helping us.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple.. Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

ALMOST NOON REPOST SHELLEY A, DEBRA WI

Cheers,

Where to begin? Thank you, Alex, for this site, for all you do, for making the weekend possible. Even those of us who could not be at DelPark felt included thanks to you, Wendy and everyone else. Tim, for opening your site to all of us, thank you so much.

Edgar, you are so beautiful, and we all share in our love of Barbaro and of you.

I am so grateful for my Famblee here, there are no words to describe my feelings. It is wonderful to be amongst all of you who get it.

To the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, Edgar, Michael, Peter, UPENN & all who allowed us to come along, I will keep you in my heart always.

Barbaro, thank you for being, for bringing all of us together so that we can work together for the well being of horses and to share together with those who do GET IT.

And now John Henry is saying to get back to work. KEEP CALLING. The opposition is pulling out all the stops, so we have to go full steam ahead. The opposition is especially going after the undecided senators who voted aye in committee. We need to keep them.

We are the voice for those who have no voice.

KEEP CALLING. KEEP CALLING. KEEP CALLING.

Alex, Sharon and all those who worked so hard to make the weekend's activities such a lovely and successful time, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I was so pleased to meet so many of you in person. I won't list you for fear of leaving someone out!

Just a couple observations:
THe Jacksons were so gracious and I was so touched to see Mr. Jackson wipe away a tear. And Mrs. Jackson! What can I say? When she folded her hands together and knelt toward us I was overwhelmed.

I was thrilled to see Eduardo. We often forget the special bond he had with Barbaro.

The courage and strength that Mike Rea has is amazing. His huge smile alone would have been enough for me to make the day worthwhile.

Tim Woolley : We NEVER doubted you existed but is was great to see you in person. Continued success and as always, thank you for giving us a gathering place.

Hennegan Brothers: You guys are the best! FOBs, please get the word out so every racing fan ( or non-racing fan) gets to see this funny, exciting, touching and in an odd sort of way, very family oriented ( except for minor "bad language") film.

FsOB, you are all Beautiful Souls.

Until we receive a new calling list from Shelley & Debra, I am calling, and providing for everyone below, the list that the Yahoo discussion group is calling today. Like us, the Yahoo group is affiliated with Habitat for Horses. I thought I would post this list to keep the momentum going until Shelley and Debra are able to get back from the weekend's activities and touch base with the leadership which provides strategy to this site.

TO NEW PEOPLE TO THE SITE: WELCOME, WELCOME!! WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP IN MAKING THESE CALLS AND IT'S REALLY EASY TO DO. When the person in the Senator's office answers, just give your name & say you are calling to urge Senator XYZ to (i) cosponsor S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, (ii) vote in favor of S. 311 when it reaches the Senate floor for a vote. Also, ask them to make sure they make a record of your call and that they pass your message to the Senator. If you're more comfortable faxing, by all means do that. (FYI, please do not call the other Senators from AZ & AK -- they were on a committee that we called last week.)

NBC should have shown it in prime time anyway. Glad the birthday celebrations went well. What a class act the Jacksons are as well as the other people who cared about and loved Barbaro so much. Ok....Reposting from the DB....

Well....Home again and sitting at the computer....I feel as though I was rocketed to the moon and back over the last 36 hours!!!! This weekend at Del Park was AWESOME! I'm still shaking from emotion.....Meeting so many wonderful people, the fantastic fundraiser Sat. night, having gorgeous weather at the track today, and the high point of emotion...the speeches today by the Jacksons, Alex, Kathy Anderson, Tim Woolley, Jeanine Edwards and her reading of Edgar Prado's letter, Mike Rea and even Eduardo!!!!! All UNREAL! I got to give Mrs. Jackson several of the Celebration tee shirts that I made. I hugged and kissed her and thanked her for everything. She wanted to pay for them and when I said No then she said she'd make a contribution! Can you IMAGINE!!!! I hugged her again and told her she'd already done enough. So she patted the shirts and said she'd save them for the museum!!!! I LOVE THAT WOMAN!!!!
*********************************************
Well...the sale of those shirts just accrued another $1,625 for The Laminitis Fund. If you didn't already get yours, go to

www.corvinoballet.org/50306.html

and let's get rid of this disease once and for all!

MORE GREAT PUBLICITY!! This was posted in the Yahoo anti horse slaughter discussion group and mentions the horses headed to slaughter who survived the wreck of the double decker, the FOBs & all of their causes and activities AND the passage of S. 311 out of the Senate Committee last week!!! It mentions the "awful practice in this country of slaughtering horses for overseas consumption and hopes Congress "can pass the bill before the first Saturday in June, when the Belmont Stakes takes place."

What a goal -- passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act by the time of the running of the Belmont. IF WE KEEP CALLING, IT'S POSSIBLE!!!

And how about that healine as the FOB slogan: "The Horse is With You." How perfect is THAT?

Posted by: nancy r. lewis at April 30, 2007 5:44 PM

Hey Guys...I just posted this at the NBC Sports site...

Thank you NBC for really letting us know what you really think about Barbaro being the "nation's horse." It is esp ironic given the touching remarks you used on the highlight promo from those who loved and knew him best.

Barbaro inspired millions of people to not only renew their interest in horse racing, but to actively join in promoting legislation to end Horse Slaughter for human consumption , to seek a cure for the deadly disease of laminitis which ultimately took his life, to insure safer racing conditions for both man and horse, and to sucessfully rescue countless numbers of horses all over the world.

I think the worst insult is that you acted as if you really cared about Barbaro and about us Fans of Barbaro. You led us to believe that Barbaro and his impact on this nation was something that you "got." You didn't even let us know that it would be on UHD later that night and have religated it to the purgatory of all file thirteen shows, CNBC.

It appears to me that "Barbaro: A Nation's Horse..." only meant something to NBC as long as it could sell DVDs
and put on a public charade that it really cared about its viewers.

When the Fans of Barbaro do things such as donating to jockeys' families devastated by catastrophic racing injuries or volunteering to work at animal shelters, hospitals and fund raisers, we do indeed show that we "get it." It is a shame the NBC does not.

Please, take time to visit this link and let your voices be heard by posting a comment...Thanks...

I haven't posted in quite some time but still read everyone's comments. I was unable to attend the birthday celebration and was VERY disappointed to not even be able to watch on TV because of the hockey game.

Even though I have now been able to watch recent races, there is still a big void for me. I will always miss Barbaro!

Gayle

Posted by: Gayle Lorenzen at April 30, 2007 6:11 PM

I had already read earlier that day that the documentary would most likely be cancelled due to the hockey game. NBC should have aired it anytime after 7:00 to begin with instead of following a program that has no time limits. I am really worried about the Kentucky Derby because it is being preceded by another playoff hockey game. Horse racing is always short changed no matter who broadcasts ESPN or NBC.

Posted by: Barbara Hawkins at April 30, 2007 6:17 PM

The video of Barbaro's newest baby brother is too cute for words. Barbaro must be looking down and saying, "Boy, was I that spunky at that age?"

I know I'm supposed to be editing the video from the weekend but I just had to say hi to some FOB's that I actually met:

Laurie in MN, or as I love to call you Laurie-Tuck-In: You are as sweet as the words in your tuck-ins each night. As I told you, don't ever stop writing the tuck-ins. We all need them more than you know. You are a gentle lovely soul.

Gloria from IL: What a special person you are--so easy to talk to, and interesting to talk to, and just a pleasure to meet you.
Please keep in touch.

Balto Deb: I love you sweetie!! See you in chat!! You give great hugs!! Kisses to Seigy!

Ann, Megan, and Joseph: What a lovely family!! Ann, you made me laugh when I was crying, and I thank you for that. Your kids are just terrific!!

Smartycat: You're one special person--I enjoyed talking with you in person finally! You made me smile alot!

Jenny-PR!!!!! You are an unbelievable human being!! Thanks to you I kissed Wolf(horse) right on the nose!! How special for you to come all the way from Puerto Rico!! You made me laugh the whole weekend. Chi-Chi!! Please kiss Coco and Tarzan for me when you get home, and the lovebirds, and Victor!!!

Wendy: You are an engaging person in everything you do!! We must get together when you visit NJ again.

Nancy in CT: Aren't you so glad you came?? And you won that wonderful special hat?? It was so nice to meet you, and I'm happy you decided to come.

Yetta: Thank you for such a beautiful presentation of our t-shirts, name tags, and goodies. I know you worked very hard, and came all the way from Alabama, and it was so nice to talk with you. I hope your hubby's photos came out great!

Alex: Hearing you speak Barbaro's name with your distinguished accent put new meaning to the word elegance. We Yanks just can't say it like you.

Nancy in VaBeach and LindaVA: How great to finally meet you both and your hubbies!! They seemed to enjoy all that was going on. It was such a pleasure to chat in person!!

Sharon Crumb ala Party Planner Extraordinaire: I talked with Frank more than you, and he told me you're already starting plans for next year, and all I can say is Thank You!!

Ken Z and Daryl: Great to have some guys amongst all us women!! Thanks for coming!

Grandma Bea--it was an honor to meet you. What a young Grandma you are!!

Sabina Louise Pearce--it was lovely to meet you. Sorry we never hooked up again for you to speak on the video, but we know your love for Barbaro was special, as all your photos show.

I didn't get to meet Mr. and Mrs. J. as they were swamped by fans, similar to the way the paparazzi swamp celebrities. But they spoke so eloquently, and just having them there meant so much to me, I thank you Mr. and Mrs. J for sharing the day with us.

I spoke with many more FOB's and I don't remember everyone's names, but I love you all, and I feel like we had a family reunion along with a celebration!

OK, back to the edit room!!

Hi, FAMBLEEE!!

Unklealexbrown, you are the BEST! So handsome and distinguished in your suit and tie, and such a gracious host. Thank you for keeping me apprised during the auction. That was ABOVE and beyond the call of duty!

Wendy, thank you so much for the great photos. Made me feel as though I had been there.

Sharon, you did a great job organizing this event. YOU ROCK

All of you who were able to attend the festivities at Delaware, we were with you in spirit. Would have loved to have been there, but you represented all of us in stellar fashion. It was great to see photos of so many of you, and I'm so happy you got to see the Jacksons, Eduardo, Mike Rea(who looks sooooooo good) and that some of you were able to see Michael. Jeannine looked stunning in the photos. Wish we knew all of you who were in the all the photos! What a memorable day!

We had good representation here in CO, and are indebted to Margaret and Peter of Colorado Thoroughbred Rescue for allowing us to get our "horse fixes" and spend the day at their facilities in Wellington CO. It's a grassroots operation, but they are doing great work. We got lots of dog and kitty attention, too. We all fell in love with Domino the harlequin Dane, Ben the moose-dog and tiny Whitney, with her little cow bell. Lots of puppy kisses were given freely, and Ben stole the show with his artful cake-stealing. It was such a great day.

There will be more. We'll need to celebrate the day the bill is signed to end horse slaughter forever. Hope it's soon!

Love to all
Cheryl

Like this list, the two Alabama senators are both pro slaughter. Yes Have received letters from both, telling me about all the unwanted horses. :(
Sent both of them Daryl booklet.

Nancy R thanks for your help.
Everyone could you Please call them, I just did!
Now off to fax and call ARIZONA senators

Sharon Crumb, Alex et al FOB's -- you should be very proud of what you accomplished yesterday. It was elegant, empassioned and genuine. Though I did not attend (I must tell you, it would have been too emotional), I have been an FOB from the beginning, posting and reading many times a day, purchasing and supporting, writing to Dr. R and The Jacksons. I am in awe of what you have accomplished and what everyone here continues to accomplish. How wonderful you all are . . .

Article in Bloodhorse indicating what we know about the pre-emption of BARBARO: A NATION'S HORSE, but the good part is they heard us -- they are scrambling to schedule it this week !!! Well done all !!!

"Barbaro: A Nation's Horse," which was pre-empted April 29 by an overtime hockey game on NBC, will be presented Friday, May 4, at 9 p.m. ET and again at midnight on cable network CNBC. In addition, NBC is scrambling to see if it can find a timeslot to air the documentary this week.

Again, happy birthday Barbaro. Your greatness will continue in Nicanor and your new brother . . . because your greatness was love, spirit, courage and intelligence. If they have that, then they have it all. And if they perform on the track (and I have a feeling they will surprise us all), then that's great too!

WHAT A RIDE WE ARE ON ! We are truly "Riding with BARBARO" !!!!

Many thanks to those that made the day possible, and for all the hard work that went into it. Thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Edgar Prado, Edourdo, Alex, and Tim, Mike Rea and the many other's that were there to honor our beautiful Barbaro.

Could Barbaro's perfect partner be EACH OF US?!

Wow, I am thrilled to see all the great photos, articles, and postings about this weekend's event at Delaware Park! It must have been amazing, a truly once-in-a-lifetime event! I'm so happy for all of you who were able to go! Kudos and props to Alex and Sharon for coordinating the event of the century!!

I was lucky enough to attend the Barbaro birthday celebration and horse wash at Shiloh Horse Rescue Ranch in Sandy Valley, NV (just outside of Vegas) on Saturday. It was wonderful to be out with all the rescued horses, to be able to touch them, feed them carrots and yummy horsey treats, and to even give a couple of kisses on soft, velvety noses. There were pink ribbons tied to the gates of each horse rescued by the FOB's. It felt good to be a proud Fan of Barbaro! I even got to help wash a sweet horse named Angel. Angel had been sent to Shiloh from Colorado because she has no hair at all. They aren't sure why she had no hair, maybe some kind of allergy or even allopecia, however, she was a sweetie. She didn't like the water sprayed on her, but once she got used to the feeling of a wet sponge against her skin, she allowed me to slowly wipe her down. Once she was back in her shaded stall, I fed her lots of carrots as a reward for her patience. The folks at Shiloh will be taking extra special care of Angel and hoping her hair will come back. It was such an experience.

The biggest thrill of the day was seeing two Thoroughbreds! They had both been rescued from slaughter (thank you Jill and Shiloh), and took my breath away! They were so big compared to the other horses! Both were a beautiful chestnut brown just like our Barbaro. One had racing plates, the other was just being brought in. As I was watching him being walked through, I couldn't resist going up to him. He was the sweetest! He easily allowed me to stroke him, and to give him a kiss on his cheek! I could tell he was used to people and felt so comfortable around them. It broke my heart to think he might have ended up with people whom he trusted who would have led him to a torturous end in a slaugher house. Thank goodness for people like Jill at Shiloh, and for the other incredible, caring folks who rescue these magnificent animals and save their lives.

There was a barbecue set-up with raffles held, too. Jill told me 100 plus people had come that day, and they had raised over $1000, and that was only on Saturday!

My heart is filled with love for the compassionate, caring people who have come together to honor Barbaro, and to make a difference in the lives of all horses.

Hello, family -

Wow! Am I tired! The forum pictures from Del Pk are FABULOUS! And we can't wait for the film from Amy - (thank you SO much!) - but we frontier folk out here in northern California had a small but enthusiastic group at Golden Gate Fields, and we had a ball!

It was marvelous to meet so many FsOB, (many of whom are, of course, members of the California calling group), and to celebrate the Boss Hoss's life with them. I was fortunate in that my kids were there with me, and enjoyed themselves tremendously. Sharon Laudel cannot be praised enough for all her efforts, and a committee has already been formed for next year's party!

We were fortunate in seeing NO breakdowns, and one truly nice moment occurred close to the end of the day, in the only stakes race on the program, the Oakland. Running in the race was a horse named Tricky Trevor, and our delightful Lori Y pointed him out to us, as she had seen him run a game race, (in the money, if I recall correctly), behind Smoky Stover recently. It turns out this is a geezer horse - an 8 year old - and I was all ready to be outraged on his behalf. Then I saw him. He looked gorgeous, fit as a fiddle, and full of run. He was also in the number 8 position. : ) To make a long story short, he just gobbled up the younger horses in the stretch, and won going away. And what a delightful punctuation mark that was for our day!

Several of our members took pictures, and have promised to post when they are available. I met people who do not come on this board, and encouraged them to do so, as they would find like-minded souls.

It was a gorgeous day - cool enough for the horses, but clear and pretty. Sometimes, life is just good, and that was yesterday. We had a raffle, a silent auction, great food, good company, our name up in lights, no injured jockeys or horses, and a Hell of a good time was had by all. I think a few people could not be there because, as some of you may be aware, there had been a partial collapse of a freeway very near the track. The track had sold out before the date, but attendance was actually fairly sparse, for the same reason, I am sure.

But, in any case, I don't think there was a dry eye among us as we sang "Happy Birthday" to Barbaro. I just want everyone here to know I thought of the ones who weren't with us - jonna, Lynne Brown, Linnie, Laurie, Miss Dora, Carol Nichols (I think?) who had to stay home to tend her parents, Angel Dee Mirich, Glenda who donated such a beautiful jewelry set for our silent auction - so many of you. I know I cannot remember everyone, and I apologize to each and every one of you whom I neglected to mention. In my mind, I spoke your names like a litany, and thanked the universe for giving me such wonderful friends.

I look forward to hearing more from all of you, and I am so glad that no matter where we were, we were united in our hearts.

I am so sorry for those who were anticipating the documentary, and had it preempted. I have a very limited cable package, but it does include CNBC, and I would be happy to try and record (on VHS: sorry, I'm a techno-moron) the special when it does air... I know it's not the same, but I'm sure we'll find a way to offset the sting.

And now I have to go work - they have this strange idea that since they pay me, I'm supposed to do that thang!

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

- Jean

The statement I want to make to them is that "Hockey will still go on. For this moment in time we wanted to soak up more Barbaro."

This was their documentary... so they sold themselves very short by at least not airing it at the end of the game.

The May 29 connection to Earth's Celebration was so efficient that a record setting amount of LOVE ENERGY was exchanged betweeen the two realities. This has left Earth FOBs and Equine Equivalents blissed out. Since celestial beings are not schedule driven, they are pursuing the FEEL GOOD experience. Dream on, dearest ones.

What a job all involved did this weekend at Delaware Park.
It was wonderful beyond words.
THANK YOU TO ALEX AND SHARON, I have no words to explain just how great a job you did with the event.
Alex, it was great to finally meet you, you are a tremendous human being. I felt so happy for you when you received Barbaro's shoes from the Florida Derby. A GIFT MOST DESERVED.

It was a very moving day right from the banner greeting you before the tent, through the personal wishes of The Jacksons, Edgar thru Jennine Edwards, Jenine Edwards, Alex, Michael Rea and Eduardo(you could see he was touched and shocked). And both films honoring BARBARO.

I hope the Hennigan Bros. win every award they are eligible for. It was the greatest film I ever saw documenting the scenes that go with the races. TRULY FANTASTIC..
The NBC film was graciuosly done and very, very moving. It isn't over done, just TRUE and heart felt emotions..Another great job.

I AM PROUD TO BE A FAN OF BARBARO EVEN MORE IF POSSIBLE THAN EVER BEFORE. IT WAS AN HONOR TO BE THERE YESTERDAY.

As a lot of you, I was very disappointed about NBC's decision to not air the Barbaro documentary yesterday. April 29th is my birthday as well, and the thing I wanted to do most on my birthday was watch the Barbaro special. It was bad enough that NBC chose not to show it Sunday after all, on Barbaro's birthday no less. I assumed it would be on after the hockey overtime periods, but no! It was apparently more important to televise a poker game! I couldn't believe it!

Have a wonderful evening!

The heck with NBC - I am glad they received the anger and disappointment I felt yesterday. They deserve it all.

Hello FOBs and Alex,

What a wonderful job you all did this weekend. I am so proud to be one of you.

Thanks for the great pictures. I enjoyed seeing everyone, even though not in person.

Alex, I heard your accent for the first time, and it is neat...as are you.

Blessings to you all.

Loved the pictures Wendy, thank you so much. It looks like Sharon and Alex did a superb job and what a beautiful group of Fans of Barbaro. Everyone looked so happy and totally caught up in the spirit of the day!!!! What a great day to get to meet each other and the Jacksons, Mike Rhea, Eduardo and so many others.

The Texas FOB got together at Lone Star Park and had a wonderful time celebrating Barbaro's Birthday and meeting each other most for the very first time. Patty arranged everything complete with a visit to the stewards stand, an article about Barbaro in the racing program and a mention about the FOB. Of course we had cake, Barbaro Birthday Cake and a cake for LynnWins horse, Spirit. What a great job Patty did, she did so much I hope I have not left anything out. Sharon did name tags with little Barbaro magnet pictures, Linda had a beautiful banner made that we plan to use everytime we get together in the name of Barbaro and last but most certainly not least jock4hire got Tom Chapman (jockey-turned artist, winning over 2600 races spanning a 20 year career) to donate 2 beautiful Iris Gielee on canvas, one Barbaro neck & head and one winning the Derby. They are beautiful!!! And surprise of all time, I won the Derby win picture. It is to die for and I will treasure it always. My beautiful Barbaro !!!!!! Thank you Tom and jock4hire. She also was able to do tote bags, mouse pads and note cards all with Tom Chapman's Barbaro images, everything was just beautiful.
Leigh came from Austin, Linda H.from the San Antonio area, and another Linda from the Houston area and all of us others came from the Dallas area (some farther that others) I think Route/Runner came about 80 miles to Lone Star. Everyone was so awesome and we had a wonderful time. The track did a wonderful triute to Barbaro that had us all crying by the time they showed his Derby Win. For everyone not there you were in our thoughts.

We all vowed to contine our work in Barbaro's name and make the FOB heard!!!

What a wonderful experience and something to always remember.

We believe in Miracles
We believe in Barbaro

Fans will be able to purchase the Riding with Barbaro wrist bands at Woodbine race track on Saturday. I thought I had read that they could also do this at another track, maybe in Minnesota? What about the other tracks?

Whoever named the documentary "Barbaro, A Nation's Horse" probably had to eat his words as the "nation" was denied seeing it. Hopefully they will make up for it and give the "nation" back its horse!

Thank you Alex for the articles about the event, am enjoying them!

I was away most of the month of April, and I've been trying to catch up on posts. I seem to be missing Harriette's. Does anyone know when she last posted, and if all is well there?

Cindy,

Welcome! This is a fabulous place.

The long shadow hanging over the Churchill Downs racetrack this year isn’t that of the famed twin spires. It’s the shaded silhouette of an equine superstar named Barbaro.

As the anniversary of his scintillating 6 ½-length victory in the Kentucky Derby draws near, the dark bay colt who died in January from complications of the broken ankle he suffered in the Preakness Stakes is easily eclipsing in death the renown he achieved during his brief time the sun.

His life is the subject of multiple biographies and dueling documentaries, and the over/under line on how many times his name will be mentioned during Saturday’s NBC Sports broadcast of the Derby is hovering around 20.
