Barbaro Updates: 269

updates are now here.

Update 1838: Here are the post positions and morning line for the Derby (initial thoughts, Hard Spun should not be 15-1): Curlin Moderate Morning Line Favorite for Kentucky Derby

ESPNs current lead story: The Church of Barbaro. I enjoyed reading this as much as I did my time with Wright Thompson interviewing! A must read for Fans of Barbaro and a massive thank you to the author!

Update 1837: ESPN2 has the Derby draw show later this afternoon, 5pm. Jeannine Edwards sent this report and photographs (ESPN at Churchill Downs):

Wed morning was beautiful at Churchill. We spent the morning at the barns talking to trainers in the Oaks, believe it or not. Because we have 4 live stakes races on Friday's show, including the KY Oaks, there's alot of work to do that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the Derby. There was a common theme among the guys I talked to in the Oaks.... can't remember how many of them said their fillies are small and slight, but have a huge heart. They don't know the meaning of quit. So one thing's for sure, these fillies will be running their hearts out. Rags To Riches and Dreaming of Anna are the favorites, and neither could be doing any better.

Also caught up with NASCAR driver Dale Jarrett this morning. He and his #44 UPS car, a Toyota Camry, were at Churchill this morning. Dale will be appearing on our Post Position Draw show later today. I think I'll ask him who are the better athletes....jockeys or race car drivers. Although he's probably biased. :) He looks athletic, very fit and trim. And very nice
guy. We'll also be interviewing Louisville mayor Jerry Abramson. The post draw is also a tough show to produce. Logistically it's never easy to shoot, and the circumstances make it very fast-paced (for us, not for the viewers) because things happen quickly. Spontaneity and being able to think on your feet come in handy. Once we get through the draw show there is a cocktail party at Felt Lounge right here on Fourth Street (downtown Lousiville) so we'll decompress.

After today, we can concentrate fully on the races we'll be televising Fri and Sat.

Update 1836: A lovely morning this morning at Fair Hill. I only had four to ride, so nice and relaxing too. First was Grandma, and she went to the Tapeta track along with Tim on Nonpariel. They galloped a nice and easy mile and a quarter together. Real Lace was my second horse, and she also went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a quarter. For my third set I took Nautical Agent out back across the fields. She loved it, its a nice mental break for a horse, and it also helps them going up and down hills. Steve Klesaris had a set out back too as we were jogging around. For my final ride, it was Luke, and I was ponying Tim on Quick Quest. Quest is getting close to running for the first time so he needs to get used to a pony. Quest went to the gate, and broke out of the gate with another trainer's horse, under Jesus Bracho. Quest broke very alertly. As I was waiting for Tim to gallop back around, another set of three broke out of the gate, another Steve Klesaris set, with three jockeys. Two of the jockeys will be at Churchill on saturday hoping to win the biggest race of them all ... Mario Pino and Ramon Dominguez. The third jockey looked to out ride them though, or at least looked better coming passed me ... :)

NPR did a piece on Barbaro's legacy this morning: Ghost of Barbaro Looms over Derby Week.

Update 1835: Pletcher's five Derby starters are now settled in at Churchill Downs: Pletcher's Hopefuls Are in the House. John Shirrefs notes the similarities between his starter this year Tiago and his half-brother and Derby winner Giacomo: Shirreffs Hopes Tiago Can Fill Giacomo's Shoes, excerpt:

"There's so many little connections, it's just great," he said.

Alike in temperament if not experience, Shirreffs can see some of Tiago's older sibling in his 3-year-old chestnut colt, winner of the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) last month.

"Both are very focused and intense horses but they're not real nervous types," Shirreffs said. "They're really racehorses. They love to run."

Saturday night's fundraiser and raffles on saturday and sunday raised $20,500 for Thoroughbred Charities of America and New Bolton's Laminitis Fund!

Keep calling, Cavel is now back open!

Good morning everyone. This is a repost from the discussion board about our Barbaro bithday celebration at LSP on sunday. It's long, but I hope interesting!

Hi all you wonderful FOB,

We had 17 FOB and with family and friends there was a total of 30 people. We had a good mix of blue and green tee shirts with a bit of white. We had several people ask where we got them, and if I had any to sell right there! Also got lots of comments like "I like your tee shirt". FOB Sharon made beartiful Leal colored name tags and Barbaro magnets for each of us. FOB Linda had a banner made that said "Celebrating the Sprit of Barbaro 2007". We hung it on a railing that was just across from our tables.

We met around noonish, ate, sang happy birthday and had our cake, not only for Barbaro, but also for Snifter's Spirit, Lyn Wins beautiful colt. We did this jsut before the races started. Then for each race 3 or 4 FOBs went up to the steward stand to see a race from there. Because some of our group was gone for each race, it was hard to get a picture of all of us. But the view from the stewards stand was awesome! When I went up, I saw the track announer in the next room and I commented about it. So our host took us into the announcer's room to meet him. It was great. I asked him if he ever called trainers or owners to ask how to pronounce a horse's name if it was difficult. He laughed and said the trainers tell him, I only train them, it's up to you to figure out how to prononuce them. He said he googled them on the internet. He also said that sometimes he thought the owners created difficult names on purpose!!

We drew names for our door prizes which were Tom Chapman Barbaro prints, tote bags, mouse pads, and Silver Charm note cards. It was great fun. Thanks jock4hire, not only for getting the items, but for all you humor during the drawings! We wrote our checks for the laminitis fund (here that, Linnie!!) and tried to take some more pictures.

Throughout the day people came up to us to talk about Barbaro, and we told them about Alex and the TWR website.

After the seventh race, the track announcer read the names of the different group who were at the track Sunday. We waited, but no Fans of Barbaro appeared or was announced. We looked at each other and wondered what was going on. Then on the jumbotron appeared "In memory of Barbaro 2003 - 2007". They gave a history of his racing career and told about his galant struggle to live after his injury.

Then there was a full screen on the jumbotron that said "Fan of Barbaro". The announcer welcomed us and mentioned we were a passoinate group of fans that continued to honor Barbaro's memory. I was totally shocked! Then they showed the full replay of Barbaro's Derby win. We were all elated, crying, and of course, helped say "and here comes Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro!"

In the program there was a full page entitled "Lone Star Park Salutes the Memory of Barbaro" Again it was the story of his background mentioning the Jacksons, Edgar Prado, Michael Matz and Dr. Richardson. There was one line that said, "Today would have been Barbaro's 4th birthday, and Lone Star Park is proud to welcome "The Fans of Barbaro" a passionate group of horse racing fans that are equally proud to salute and honor the champion's memory." I was blown away again! I had no idea they were going to include a mention of us. I only knew they were going to honor Barbaro in the program.

One of our Texas FOB is going to make a You Tube video of our day, but it will take about a week. Can't wait to see it.

All in all, it was a great day. We all made wonderful new friends, had a very special day and all because of a gorgeous remarkable bay colt who will never be forgotten.

Run with the wind, Barbaro. Your legacy will live forever.

###Alex & Tim
Hawks are my messengers, I read you saw one yesterday during your training..

The hawk is a dreamer’s sign.
She sings as she flies
She brings a true message
Her voice sings no lies
She drinks of the rivers
To make her voice clear
The trees are all budding
And springtime is near
She wings to the dreamer
Then floats to a tree
Ever singing the message
Of that yet to be...

****CANDLE ALERT****

Good morning, everyone. At 6:40 AM Eastern time on Wednesday, there were 1,609 candles lit for Barbaro. When I came back from Delaware, I found 4,500!! Candles for many of the others we love are also down.

Let's light up the board again:

Hiya, FsOB, on this grey, rainy morning on the banks of the Thames. Wishing everyone a safe and productive day. Wouldn't it be great with the anti-slaughter legislation gets passed before the end of 2007's Triple Crown races?
Alex, please be careful out there today, OK? We don't want you falling off any horses!
Peace to all citizens of the Barbaro Nation around the globe, RMH

#### To Harriette, please know that we were with you in spirit at DelPark last weekend.
To Pam Mross, isn't it awesome about the Queen's plans to visit the Derby this year?. She has never attended the KY Derby per se, but has visited KY previously on non-official visits to look at horses. I remember my Dad saying years ago that the Queen would like to have one of her horses win the English Derby some day.
To Ashley, have a grand time at Churchill Downs! If Edgar plans to ride Scat Daddy, then that's my choice for 2007.
To Kathy in SC, may your recovery from knee surgery progress smoothly.
To Liz in the UK: Thanks for the term "puthery", I have never heard or read that one. Isn't Cornwall magical? There must've been many small celebrations of Beltane yesterday. Yes, the Cornish are proud of their Celtic traditions.
To Mary Dubbink, thanks for the blog site for Mike Rea. I'll drop him a note tonight.
To Shirley in KY: I am so sorry that your Mother suffered a stroke. I missed seeing your notes. Your powers of observation helped your Mother to get clinical care promptly and that is tremendously important. Please know that she and you are in my thoughts! ####

Good morning all

Another beautiful day.

Yesterday there was a winner in Barbaro's colours over here: Enticing, the lovely 3 year old filly trained by William Haggas. She destroyed her rivals at Bath in a 5 furlong sprint, winning by 5 lengths in a record time of 58.75, cutting over a second off the course record. I'm really looking forward to seeing her later in the season. George Washington is reported to be doing very well in training too, which is good to hear. Altogether a good week so far.

## Robyn Hoffmann

Sorry I spelt your name wrongly yesterday. The Queen will be thrilled to see the Kentucky Derby - she has had a number of Classic winners, but the Epsom Derby has always eluded her (she seems to have had better fillies than colts). She can look a bit grim until she smiles, but you should see her face light up when she watches horse racing - I hope you see it when she's with you there on Saturday.

Posted by: Liz (UK) at May 2, 2007 11:57 AM

Good Wednesday morning FsOB,

I was totally shocked - actually gasped out loud to read about Cavel re-opening. We must work harder than ever to get the House and Senate bills passed. Shelley and/or Debra - please post the strategy that the FsOB should take regarding the Cavel situation.

To those FsOB who are posting recollections of the past weekend - thank you so much! It's so enjoyable to read about the celebrations that took place all over the country. I hope some of our Florida FsOB post about the fantastic time we had at Tampa Bay Downs.

Have a great day all!!

We have the power, so let just make our calls and get this job done. Our voices have to be heard.

Have a good calling day!

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Tim and Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I'm late posting as my dial-up at home was being cranky!

I am so disheartened by the re-openning of Cavel. I have yet to read how this happened but I will follow up with my lone hold out of a legislator to get him to co-sponsor. He has aspirations of becoming a senator so I will use that to my advantage!

Peace and prayers to all in need. Remember to treat yourselves gently this week...and always.

Good Morning FOB's

A warm welcome to those of you who have recently joined us.

As you know, on Wednesday, April 25, S311 was voted on and passed in the Senate Commerce Committee. This means it is now released and can be put on the senate calendar for a full vote. While this is WONDERFUL news, our fight is far from over.

We still must get HR503 out of the House Committees. And we still have to get the leadership to put S311 on the calendar. The only way to assure this is by getting more co-sponsors in both the Senate and the House. The more support, the better our chance for moving this forward.

For this reason, we have been asked to keep contacting any of our representatives that are not yet on board. Please remember to NOT place calls to those that are already co-sponsors.

IMPORTANT!!!!!.....It has come to our attention that some of the aides in DC are getting our two bills confused with HR249 that was passed in the House last week. HR249 is for the protection of our Wild Horses. That bill was passed in the House and now has to go to the Senate. OUR bill HR503 was NOT passed in the House but is still in committee. And it still needs co-sponsors.
Please make sure they understand the difference. I was a little worried this would happen but I thought it would happen amongst ourselves…not with the people in DC!!!! If they tell you that our bill is out of committee in the House, please politely explain the difference. This could make a huge difference since some of them are saying that no more co-sponsors are needed!! That’s just NOT true.

We got a tremendous amount of publicity this past weekend and will continue to get more as the Triple Crown proceeds. And all of it is GOOD publicity. However, it is important to remember that our opponents have not become complacent and they have not given up. They continue to make their voices heard and we must be louder.
Many of you are working with other groups also. While all the strategies are good, our success has come by following the directives that are given to us. Our contacts in Washington have asked us to stay focused on those directives.

For those of you are members of the state groups, please go back to Stephanie’s original strategy. It has proven to be very successful and has gotten very good results.

Alex has posted links on the anti slaughter site for your convenience. You can easily access both co-sponsor lists and more information about the state groups.

The momentum is with us…….and never forget, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE! Make those calls and send those faxes for him and all the horses.

If you think one person won’t make a difference, you’re WRONG!!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has”………………………..Margaret Mead

Thanks and have a great day.

Hi Cal,

I know what you mean...There were so many people and so many things to take in that it was hard to talk to everyone. Just being in the same room with you all was the best experience for me. To know that you were all there, in person or in spirit, as we made our journey through the emotional ups and downs of Sunday. It was draining to say the least but it was good to know that if I turned my head in any direction, I could see the Green and Blue Barbaro Nation with my own eyes. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Words cannot do it justice.

Did you know that Ken Z won the bid on the photo of Ferdinand!!? I had wished I could have afforded to buy that, but now that I know it is in Ken Z's hands, I am thrilled. Ferdy was my boy in 86 as well. RIP Ferdy, the FOB will never forget you!.

Special Hi to my new best pal Carol in NY and to Gloria in IL, and Jenny in PR. And it was a blast to meet Debra WI and ShellyA and Linnie....the list goes on and on. Each and everyone of you was a pleasure to meet.

We have much to do.

I woke up to Tom Goldman's wonderful piece about Barbaro this morning on NPR, including the information about the now rescheduled NBC documentary with a sample email from a Barbaro fan which helped push it to PRIME time!! And then on to the widespreading Barbaro effect in so many areas, including safer tracks (i.e., Keeneland, where most of the Derby field is stabled!). It is national news, and it is not going away. What a great wake up call.

#####
Robyn -
I talked to Mom yesterday. She has always loved horses, in fact, watches all the races (from home) and picks the winners. Last year, right after the Derby, she phoned me. She was so excited. She said, "Honey, I picked Barbaro before the race. I watched him and looked at his statistics (she's good with numbers) and I just knew he would win...." She was thrilled and just loved him.

Needless to say, two weeks later, she was terribly upset with the rest of us. And always asked me when we talked how he was doing, and cried in January....

Regarding this year, Mom is from England and when I told her the Queen would be at the Derby, she said she would be sure to look for her on TV - LOL I've a feeling she may not have to look too hard... I wonder if she will pick the winner again? Even if she does, it won't be the same. At least not for me.

EVERYONE -
On another note, whoever manipulated whatever they manipulated to reopen Cavel should be ashamed, if they can feel shame..... It's very disheartening. We have to keep making calls/faxes/e-mails wherever we can to get the word out and urge the passage of the bills to end this nightmare.

Dave & Glenn,
Thanks for the help. Please also see a thread discussion board titles Arlington Park Summer about people getting together at Arlington Park Soiree. We need to support a track that had a horrible safety record last year and they did the right thing by installing polytrack for the horses. Arlington is owned by Churchill Downs so this was a huge step for the industry.

Cup for Barbaro sells for $22,222

By Alex Davis
The Courier-Journal

Bonnie O'Neil won't be at the Kentucky Derby this year, but she already can lay claim to one of the event's most expensive souvenirs.

The New York City resident, a former Wall Street money manager, agreed yesterday to pay $22,222 for a gold-plated mint julep cup with an image of Barbaro etched on its surface. O'Neil was the winning bidder in an online auction organized by Woodford Reserve bourbon, whose parent company is Louisville-based Brown-Forman Corp.

Woodford Reserve is selling 132 of the cups -- one for every Derby winner -- and donating the proceeds to charity.

O'Neil isn't shy about her love of Barbaro. She has an oil painting of the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner hanging in the living room of her Manhattan home. She collects newspaper clippings about the horse's life and has donated money to research laminitis, which eventually led to Barbaro's being euthanized in January.

"He is just the embodiment of the perfect horse," O'Neil said yesterday. "I think horses are a lot more perfect than people to begin with."

Most of the other cups have sold for $1,000 each. Thirty-three were still for sale yesterday afternoon at www.woodfordreservemintjulep.com.

Several winners of the Triple Crown fetched higher amounts, such as Secretariat ($3,600) and Seattle Slew ($2,900).

Courtney Sandora, a spokeswoman for Woodford Reserve, said the price of the Barbaro cup more than doubled in the auction's final hour.

O'Neil owns five dressage horses in Pennsylvania, but she no longer attends live races for fear of witnessing an injury. She doesn't know any of the horses in Saturday's Run for the Roses and has arranged for Gretchen Jackson, the co-owner of Barbaro, to pick up the julep cup for her at Churchill Downs.

Each cup is being filled at the track with a special batch of Woodford Reserve, along with mint from Ireland and organic sugar from Australia. Any cups still remaining Saturday will be sold at the track for $1,000 each.

O'Neil said Jackson is more than welcome to drink the mint julep cocktail that goes with the Barbaro cup. "To tell you the truth," O'Neil said, "I think she needs it."

I'd like to thank Alex, Sharon and all who were involved in planning this past weekend's activities in Delaware. My sister and I had the most wonderful time with all the FOBs and it couldn't have been better. You did a great job and deserve to be commended for all your hard work and effort in getting it organized.

It was wonderful meeting so many like-minded people. Kennett Florist was great as was going over to NBC. I was not well enough Sunday morning to stay at Fair Hill for the whole thing and I deeply regret that. I did at least get over there and was able to see the place. The afternoon at DelPark was great. Thank you again for such a wonderful weekend.

Proud to be an FOB!!!

FOB's FROM WASHINGTON STATE!!!

I posted on the DB board, but in case you couldn't read it, could everyone please Gang-phone Senator Patty Murray today?
She is in favor of anti slaughter but needs a bit more nudging to co-sponsor. Her aide said to have people call in, he's giving her a tally. Remember to emphasize that more co-sponsors are needed and the bills are HR 503 and S311. THanks!

HAY, ALL...DIVE RIGHT IN" and make your wagers on Misty's foaling date. Right now the water in Misty's foaling pool is awfully shallow - we need all of you to show your support! C'mon, guys...Misty is as much "ours" as Rosie - they were both in the original "In honor of Barbaro rescue" and we raised $1,500+ for Rosie's birth pool...doesn't Misty deserve the same attention???

Here is the link for MISTY's BABY POOL

http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages/?msg=8207.1

Misty, along with Rosie (proud mama of Bobby's Lil' Angel) was among the first FOB rescues and lives at Miracle Horse Rescue. Misty, at the age of 26, is a high-risk mama-to-be and is expected to foal within the next 3 weeks.

$5. per wager on the date and time of her foaling (all times are Pacific time zone)...please show Misty the same support we all showed Rosie! Misty will NEVER be up for adoption...she will live out her life at MHR. The person whose bet comes closest to the time of Misty's foaling gets to select the rescue who will receive the proceeds...it would be great if MHR could receive these funds to support Misty in her "retirement"...no more foals for this beautiful old gal!

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING MISTY!

Hello all,
First I want to say thank you to EVERYONE who wrote to me on the DB after I (prematurely) announced I would no longer be posting. A special thank you to LaserRob for starting it. I felt your love and support. Your words of encouragement, well, they meant more to me that you will ever know. I can never thank you enough or properly.
Once an FOB always an FOB. And take it from me, don't ever say you are not going to post anymore, my goodness, I thought I was going to have a mob at my door dragging me back here...LOL
But, no need to drag. I know where I belong and it is right here with my family.
I love you all sooooo much.

### Michelle... thanks...LOL

Now on to fight Cavel. We will shut their doors for good. My heart hurts to think how many horses will go through those doors before the 8th, but I see that #8 and I can only believe that is a good sign that we will win, we have Barbaro's number stamped on it, just like it was on his blanket when he crossed the finish line and we all know how well he did it... need I say the words, by a landslide, and that is how we are going to beat Cavel, by a landslide.
Thank you to all the Illinois FOB who have stepped up to make those calls to their Senators, but rest assured we have your back!!!

###..Harriette, You left out the part about the chocolate...LOL
Guess you need to email me again and give more details, huh?

To all of you I did not get to meet. I WILL be at the next get together, whenever that may be, I hope o see you there.

To anyone I have missed that needs a hug or has something going on, I am sorry I missed you. I have been away and have some catching up to do, but know I love you all and you were never far from my mind or my heart.

Now... Off to get those Senators.

Love to you ALL,

The producer of the HBO documentary that is going to be aired on June 6 was interviewed yesterday on Sirius At the Races and said he can't get through the first 5 minutes of it without crying - said of all the sports stories they have covered Barbaro made the biggest impact
and he talked about our site and all the good that has come from Barbaro.

The post position draw is on ESPN2 today at 5pm, also they have the Run for the Roses, previous Kentucky Derbies airing all week on ESPN Classics.

I have already got some emails from Floridians that we met on Sunday who want to join our calling group to end the horse slaughter.

Another gray has been added to the Derby - Imawildandcrayguy is another Florida bred gray joining Storm in May. Their trainer, Bill Kaplan was on At the Races also and said Storm in May has run against most of the top horses and he thinks Curlin has a good chance to win the triple crown. He is physically imposing and so far has the mental maturity to match.

Bad news about Cavel - we must keep up the calls.

Once again, this morning, TWO of the congressional offices I spoke with thought that 503 had passed last week. They confused our bill with 249, the wild horse protection bill. One of these aides was the actual animal welfare legislation aide for the office....and he was totally confused.

Please continue keeping our bill in the forefront, and where you find this sort of confusion, clear it up right away. We CANNOT lose ground this session because people in D.C. think that our issue has already been dealt with this term when it has not even come out of committee.

And lets all contact everyone we know in Illinois to deal with this emerging Cavel situation. I know that we would all like to make the calls ourselves, but Illinois needs to hear from actual constituents. (Not "zipcode constituents".)

Good morning, Barbaro Nation! We have our work cut out for us with that disgusting announcement about Cavel.

But remember--we're the group that changed network programming. That's all about money. Horse slaughter is all about money. I think TV execs are tougher nuts to crack, because they don't have to to worry about re-election and they're less visible.

So if we can persuade NBC to do the right thang, we can certainly persuade Congress.

Glenn--welcome! Hope to see you here often.

Over the weekend, some of us on the discussion board broached the idea of sending baskets to Barbaro's mom, La Ville Rouge, to congratulate her on her new arrrival, and to Nicanor, for just being him.........and a foal-sized roses and baby's breath welcome to the world for the newest baby brother to Barbaro So, I have asked Kennett Florist to help us with this. Pletcher Takes Aim At 0-For-14 Streak With 5 Derby Starters

By BETH HARRIS
AP Sports Writer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Todd Pletcher is certainly goosing his odds of ending an 0-for-14 streak in the Kentucky Derby. He plans to enter a record-tying five horses in Saturday's race -- a quarter of the expected 20-horse field -- although none of them figures to be the favorite.

"I'm not as excited about having five in there," he said. "I want to have one that wins."

The 39-year-old trainer has come close twice before. He finished second to Barbaro with Bluegrass Cat last year and second with Invisible Ink in 2001.

This year, he's saddling Any Given Saturday, Circular Quay (pronounced key), Cowtown Cat, Scat Daddy and Sam P.

"I still don't feel like in years past that we've brought the best horse to the race," he said. "I'm hoping this year that maybe one of ours is."

Two of his horses -- Circular Quay and Scat Daddy -- are coming off extended layoffs, and history dictates Derby winners run within four weeks of the first Saturday in May.

Barbaro proved the exception last year when he won after a five-week layoff.

Three of Pletcher's previous 12 Derby starters had layoffs longer than three weeks going into the race, so this year the trainer is in uncharted territory. Louisiana Derby winner Circular Quay will have had an eight-week break, while Florida Derby winner Scat Daddy comes in off a five-week rest.

"Most of the final preparations have been a little further out than they would have normally been. So that's one adjustment that we've made trying to improve on our Derby results," he said. "Bring in maybe a little fresher horse than we have in the past."

That represents a change in Pletcher's thinking. This year, he's chucked tried-and-true Derby trends and is relying on the tendencies of his own horses.

"The horses that we train tend to do much better with time between races and I just don't see why that wouldn't apply to the Kentucky Derby," he said. "I know you can take all the historical facts and stats and all that, but if I do that I'm ignoring the most important data and that's on the ones I train."

Except for the Triple Crown races, Pletcher has enjoyed huge success during his 11-year career, giving him the confidence to deviate from the norm.

"I think you just have to be comfortable with what works best for you and for your horse," he said.

Pletcher has won three consecutive Eclipse Awards as the nation's top trainer. His horses earned more than $26.8 million last year, surpassing his previous record by $6 million, and his 100 stakes wins broke the record of 92 set by his mentor, D. Wayne Lukas.

The low-key Pletcher lets everyone else obsess about why he has yet to win the Derby, Preakness or Belmont Stakes.

"I don't think Todd is feeling that pressure because he's having such a great run the last couple years," Lukas said Tuesday. "He's going to win one. But sometimes in sports, you get a long run with some great athletes and great people that don't get the ring."

Saturday, Pletcher will join Lukas, a four-time Derby winner, and two-time winner Nick Zito as the only trainers with five Derby starters in the race's 133-year history.

"He's got a solid bunch," Lukas said. "I don't think he'll have a Nick Zito."

Lukas won with Grindstone when he saddled five in 1996, while Zito was shut out with his five in 2005.

Pletcher's losing streak in the Derby hasn't scared off any of his wealthy clients, whose enthusiasm for having horses in America's greatest race has rubbed off on him.

"These people who are very, very successful in their own endeavors in life, but they're really fired up," he said. "That makes it a lot of fun for us to see how excited they get about it."

ALSO, IL NEEDS OUR HELP! Please click on the new link that Alex has posted in regard to the IL Alert! Calling ALL IL CONSTITUENTS - PLEASE HELP!!

MORNING REPOST

In all, 22 3-year-olds were entered for Saturday's $2-million Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Reporting for Duty and Delightful Kiss failed to make the main body of the field that is based on graded stakes earnings. Twenty horses then passed the entry box.

Selection of post positions will be shown live on ESPN from 5-6 ET this evening. The event will take place at Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville.

In order in which the owners and trainers will go was determined in an old-fashioned pill pull at the racing office. Racing secretary Ben Huffman presided over the process.

Below is the order of selection:

HORSE JOCKEY TRAINER
1. Storm in May Juan Leyva Bill Kaplan
2. Teuflesberg Stewart Elliott Jamie Sanders
3. Hard Spun Mario Pino Larry Jones
4. Liquidity David Flores Doug O'Neill
5. Bwana Bull Javier Castellano Jerry Hollendorfer
6. Street Sense Calvin Borel Carl Nafzger
7. Cowtown Cat Fernando Jara Todd Pletcher
8. Scat Daddy Edgar Prado Todd Pletcher
9. Imawildandcrazyguy Mark Guidry Bill Kaplan
10. Zanjero Shaun Bridgmohan Steve Asmussen
11. Tiago Mike Smith John Shirreffs
12. Circular Quay John Velazquez Todd Pletcher
13. Sam P. Ramon Dominguez Todd Pletcher
14. Nobiz Like Shobiz Cornelio Velasquez Barclay Tagg
15. Stormello Kent Desormeaux Bill Currin
16. Curlin Robby Albarado Steve Asmussen
17. Sedgefield Julien Leparoux Darrin Miller
18. Any Given Saturday Garrett Gomez Todd Pletcher
19. Great Hunter Corey Nakatani Doug O'Neill
20. Dominican Rafael Bejarano Darrin Miller
21. Reporting for Duty NA - also eligible Steve Asmussen
22. Delightful Kiss NA - also eligible Pete Anderson

Yes,! exclaimed trainer Jamie Sanders when Teuflesberg drew the No. 2 pill. Earlier in the week, her colt had been No. 21 on the earnings list. The defection earlier in the week of Merv Griffin's Cobalt Blue got her into the body of the field. ?That's awesome. We needed that. I'm not telling what we'll take because someone is picking before us.?

Sanders was with co-owner Jeff Singer of New York.

Disappointed where Tommy and Bonnie Hamilton, whose two Silverton Hills entrants, Dominican and Sedgefield drew selections 20 and 17, respectively.

?We wanted to be outside, but not that far outside,? Tommy Hamilton said.

Trainer Larry Jones was pleased with getting the third choice for Hard Spun. ?That's huge; that makes it good for us,? he said of Richard Porter's homebred.

I can't believe Dominican is more then likely breaking from the parking lot...Nobiz will be somewhere in the middle.. and poor Great Hunter and Curlin are really going to have to break sharp if things line up like this.

My understanding is that there is now a stay, pending Cavel's appeal, upon the federal ruling that had halted the USDA inspection of the horse slaughterhouses.

I have not seen anything official on this; I am going on the basis of unofficial info that I have seen in the DBs.

Cavel got a "stay", which is similar to an injunction. Basically, they persuaded the Court that since they still have appellate options, the ruling shutting them down isn't final; therefore it's unfair not to allow them to conduct business.

FOB Day at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch

We FOBs are also most cordially invited to visit Longmeadow! They want to make a day of it with us, and will work with us to set up a special visit in advance. Longmeadow is near Union, Missouri, in Franklin County (about a hour plus west of St. Louis).

If people would like to be included in this day, please let me know. I am contemplating either May 12 or May 19 or May 20, and this of course needs to be set up with MO HSUS. I mention these dates as they are near Mother's Day.

Please email me off site if you want to participate in FOB Day At Longmeadow!

Afternoon (psychic) skritches to the BBH, his intended hoofshackle (used to be called legshackle) and all of their frens...We're getting very excited for the Celestial Derby...!

#####
AFTERNOON REPOST SHELLY A, DEBRA WI -- Also,
anymore "fighting Illini" out there? Boy are you needed...

Shelley and Debra

Cheers,

Susan E - these are not post positions, this is the order that the trainers will get to select the post position at the draw tonight. Scat Daddy will be the eighth horse to pick their post position. This morning they just did a draw to see in what order they will select.

Storm in May - awesome he gets the first choice, since he has only one eye it is very important for him to be on the side where he can see the other horses.

As to the confusion noted by Shelley and Debra re some of the aides thinking that last week's passage of HR 249 in the House "took care" of the slaughter issue - even Jack Ireland appears to have been confused; below, an email I sent him:

Subject: Your great piece on Barbaro and the FOBs
To: jireland@delawareonline.com

Hi, Mr. Ireland; I've contacted you before, expressing my applause for your writings about Barbaro. And I do so again, for your piece about the celebration at Delaware Park 4/29 for Barbaro's Birthday. You surely captured the essence of all the good being accomplished by the community of people that came to pass via the internet, all drawn by Barbaro, Of all the coverage I've seen thus far, yours is the most comprehensive, the most sensitive, and the ONLY one to quote Eduardo.

But as a compulsive do-gooder I have to point out an unintentional error that may give rise to some public misunderstanding - so that you can clarify, if you see fit. (Personally, I foresee that in clarifying this you will be calling even more much-needed attention to the status of the horse slaughter legislation - which surely is a good thing.)

You wrote:

"Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., drew loud applause when he said the federal Horse Slaughter Act has passed the House and is now before the Senate."

If that were true, we would all be dancing in the streets!

What passed the House last week was NOT the "federal Horse Slaughter Act" that we have all been calling our legislators about, but rather HR 249, a separate bill to restore protection to WILD horses and burros. That protects ONLY the wild equines. We're thrilled that this important bill passed the House last week, but that was NOT THE slaughter ban bill we are campaigning for - HR 503 in the House and S 311 in the Senate. The Act that passed the House last week, HR 249, does not affect the kinds of horses in jeopardy via the slaughter pipeline, such as those saved by the FOBs - it only affects free-range mustangs and burros.

In your piece, it sounds like THE bill (HR 503) passed the House, which it did not. Am sure you will want to clarify, and confident you won't take offense that I pointed this out.

And if you are going to write something about the status of the slaughter ban regarding ALL (not only wild) horses - the good news is that last Wednesday, S 311 was approved without amendments by the Senate Committee it was in, so now will be voted on by the Senate in the near future. HR 503 (the counterpart of S 311) is still being considered in several House Committees.

And FYI - all 3 plants in the US that were slaughtering horses for human consumption abroad, are TEMPORARILY closed (due to recent US Court decisions); however, horses are still being shipped into Canada and Mexico for slaughter. The federal slaughter ban (HR 503 & S 311) prohibits not only slaughter for human consumption, but also transportation for such purposes. So the ban is needed to CLOSE OUR BORDERS to keep our horses safe from slaughter.

Also - I wanted you to see this piece;

Hoping you may be interested in following up on the foal at Miracle Horse Rescue and the foal we're all awaiting - among the first of the many horses saved because of Barbaro. . . .

Thanks again for all the great press about our favorite horse ever and all the good being done by this incredible community of people, all brought together by Barbaro.

Here is a re-post from yesterday. I don't take any credit for the idea. I think there is a force here who "speaks" to us. He is tall, dark, and handsome and he is the reason we are all here.

Good guess, but it's not Alex!

Anyway, here goes:

It never ceases to amaze me how caring and generous you all are. You give and give and give. The horse rescues and the Barbaro Fund and the Laminitis funds are all thriving because of you!

Before I go on, please be aware that I have given to ALL of the above.

Last week, a thought hit me, and suddenly it seemed like THE RIGHT THING TO DO. No thought process, I just did it. It occurred to me that although he has left us, Barbaro will NEVER really be gone, because he lives in all of us.

I just want to be sure the next generation "Gets it," too. So I went online and ordered a bunch of copies of Shelley Mickle's book, Barbaro: America's Horse. They were not terribly expensive, and I got them for about $5.00 each. I donated several copies to the library and then took several other copies to some of our elementary schools. ALL were glad to get the copies.

Keep on giving, and if this sounds like an idea to you, please consider doing so.

Thanks for ALL you do!

CLARIFICATION REGARDING HB 1711

Just want to clarify calls/faxes being made for HB1711.

Shelley and I are CALLING OUT TO IL Constituents to get a state group together.

It is in our best interest that we get an IL group involved in the State groups NOW and this is what Shelley was trying to get across here this morning. Let's work together on this please?

We all understand that it is important we have as many people calling IL as possible as Cavel's existance affects horse owners nationwide and we all have THAT vested interest in the actions of the IL legislature, however, IL constituents CREATE a HUGE IMPACT! Please IL constituents, let us hear you!!

I hope this helps

HB 1711asked if I was a constituent.

I hope this helps.

Posted by: Debra, WI at May 2, 2007 7:50 PM

Hasn't anyone from Illinois volunteered yet to lead a state call-in group?

These groups are such an excellent way to FOCUS constituent calls, and they have been very successful in other states. Illinois is such a key state in the anti-slaughter movement -- you have the state bill in progress, Senator Obama still needs work, etc. A state call-in group would help all of you achieve your state goals much more quickly.

Stephanie, who coordinates the state call-in program, will explain exactly how to lead the Illinois group; and you can also find out from the other state leaders how much work is involved, etc. Their email addresses are in the sidebar Anti-Slaughter link, and I'm sure they'd be happy to help you decide if this is the job for you.

Please consider being a group leader, if you are one of the Illinois FOB.

I donot know if everyone knows this or not: NBC is re- scheduling Barbaro's documentary for 8:00 p.m. Sat. May 5th I was so sad last Sunday when it got cancelled, but maybe there was a reason after all. What an honor for Barbaro to have his special air after the Kentucky Derby on the anniversary of his greatest racing triumph. He has triumphed in so many other ways and brought people all over the world together to do good for all horses. I get chills waiting to hear and see his story told on Sat. I can't say thank you enough,to NBC.

Good afternoon Alex and FOBs!

Here's a notice I received from Emerald Downs that I thought might be of interest to Washington FOBs:

"Barbaro Day at Emerald Downs:
On Preakness Stakes Day, May 19, Emerald Downs will join with racetracks around the country to honor 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro and raise money for the Barbaro Memorial Fund. Monies raised by the Fund will support equine research projects, including those that focus on laminitis, the painful and often fatal hoof disease that plagued Barbaro for so much of his recuperative period following his injury in the 2006 Preakness Stakes.
The first 5,000 fans will receive a "Riding with Barbaro" bracelet, provided through a donation by Emerald Downs to the Fund. Fans can get even more involved by donating a minimum $5 to receive one of 1,000 Barbaro cookies, supplied by the Northgate Cookies by Design."

The miracle of Barbaro continues...

####Shirley

If 150,000 people can interrupt all of us who work in the Loop to rally for immigration rights, I'll take a take a day to fight for the horses!

The horse will be heard! Look what we did to NBC!

Shirley,
I think that's a great idea! What about folks in Illinois? Anyone there interested in demonstrating outside Cavel?

COUNT ME IN TOO:) I could carry a SIGN:)

I grew body parts this afternoon and called and SPOKE to ELEVEN Il. Senator's Offices, asking for them to PLEASE pass HB1711 ASAP!! We MUST get this horrid stuff STOPPED!!!(I usually just fax so I don't have to speak...there were no fax #'s, so I called and SPOKE:-0...One lady asked which state I was in? "I'm in CA"...she said, giggling..."OH! We've had THREE from CA today." I replied, "We are just trying to help the HORSEY'S"!!! She was VERY nice and said she'd pass my message along:)

If you read Glenye Cain's book "Home Run Horse", you'll remember Vindication's owner Satish Sanan who's spent hundreds of millions trying for a Home Run Horse. Well this year...

CONGRATULATIONS BARBARO AND GALLANT SECRET!!!

Goodnight Sweetheart...you Barbaro has melted a many hearts, and we love and miss you so much. Thank you for being so near, giving us inspiration and support to finish the many tasks that need to be done. Also, for whispering in your Mom's ear, Mrs. Jackson...she is just a noble person, and Mr. J.

Goodnight Family, Fans of Barbaro

Famblee...what a special word, what special friends we are. All of us holding hands in cyberspace, or this weekend and showing love and compassion.

Please call, fax, email. Let us stop CAVEL..this cannot happen. LET US GET THIS BILL PASSED NOW.

Remember our Fallen Angels, the rescues, the horses that need homes, all animals large or small. They give us nothing but unconditional love, thus we need to give back nothing but love and provide loving homes.

Help thy fellow man. Let each of us step up to the plate, because the FOBs are going to hit a homerun. We are being heard, step by step, America needs a wake up call. This earth was created for all of us...and for all animals. No one human or animal should suffer from abuse or neglect.

Have a bless evening...

Please remember Cathy Potter's little dog...Clarissa...not good news...but prayers from all of us will be heard, and I pray God heals her.

Thank you Alex and Mr. Tim...both of you are diamonds.

Remember Fitch, Apache, and others, hear their cries, hear their pleas, and let us take action.

EVERYONE OF YOU ARE VERY, VERY SPECIAL.

Calling ALL MARYLAND FOBs.

I am heading up the MD Call In Group for anti-slaughter legislation and action.

I know our state has many active members and in addition to all of the great rescue work we have done, now we also need to focus on getting our legislators on our side.

Your time commitment is only 10 minutes per day and I will provide you with the names and numbers each call in day.

COME ON, MAKE MARYLAND AND BARBARO PROUD!!

If you are interested in getting on the calling group please e-mail me at the address below.

FOB Nation:

All I can do is applaud you for your generous hearts.

This site is very important, and you all are a great bunch of human beings.

God bless each one of you and bless each one of your works in progress.

My daughter wants to volunteer at an animal shelter this summer, and I feel it is because of the influence that the FOB Nation has on her young heart.

Love and peace
