Barbaro Updates: 270

updates are now here.

Update 1844: Wow, what a day (and week) for Tim. Gatornation won the first race at Atlantic City (rather easily) making it two wins today and three for the week! Congratulations to Plane Tree Farm. Here are the charts for today: Gatornation and Mediman.

I spent the afternoon with Mike Rea at Freedom Hills. Mike was very happy with all the weekend activities and excited to have met many of you. He did well today, riding Nina. We went for a trail ride, and it was simply a beautiful afternoon to do that.

Update 1843: Mediman and Jesus Bracho made easy work of the first race at Pimlico, congratulations to Equivine Farm!

Update 1842: ABC news tonight (Charles Gibson) will have a feature on synthetic tracks. It is raining at Churchill and the track was sloppy for training this morning, I wonder how many Derby horsemen would have preferred to be training at Keeneland today?

Update 1841: New York Times has a great article on Dr. Richardson: Year Later, Barbaro's Doctor Looks Back, and Moves On, excerpt:

"From a purely surgical perspective, it was extremely unsatisfying because he didn’t make it," Richardson, 53, said of Barbaro. "Professionally, I think we did the best we could. I'm not at all embarrassed by anything that was done. Personally, I'm very sad that we didn't save him. As a horseman, as someone who really wanted to save the horse, it's extremely dissatisfying."

On the other hand, he added: "Do I think we ended up doing some good things for the profession and the industry? Yes. The increased awareness of the issues of racetrack safety. People adopting horses. Even the awareness of a horse as an animal was increased. I think people became aware of the fact that sophisticated surgery can be done on horses. A lot of people knew that already; some didn't."

Update 1840: A gorgeous morning this morning at Fair Hill. Now that I have survived the wicked winter riding 7 - 8 each day, I am riding 3 - 4 a day during this lovely time of year! Only 3 today. My first 2 were for Tim. Grandma went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a half in company with Tim on Nonpariel. These are a good pair and they are learning their business together. Grandma is doing very well at this point, realy starting to use her self and keep herself well balanced. My next set was Nautical Agent, and I took her out back. We jogged / hacked across the fields. It was simply a pleasure ride. Finally I had Lynda's Precious Partner, and she galloped a mile and a half on the Tapeta track. A simple morning's work. Along the way I gathered some Derby tips for you ... more tomorrow. Steve Klesaris: Curlin. Ricky (Klesaris excercise rider): Scat Daddy (only because he forgot to bet him in the Florida Derby). Mark Shuman: Curlin. Tim Woolley: Street Sense.

Tim has two runners today, Mediman at Pimlico and Gator Nation at Atlantic City.

Update 1839: Two days to go before the Derby and the atmosphere will now be building, the post position draw is complete. Barclay Tagg is now at Churchill (he typically arrives later in the week for the big events) and has always had a lot of confidence in his maturing colt: Confident Tagg Looking for Derby Encore. He would be my preference for a win. I think my pick is Curlin and I'll also snag a couple of 15-1s, Hard Spun and Tiago. To be honest, I think unless Curlin is the real deal, this race is wide open!

As Churchill prepares for their big day, they need to prepare for a guest of honour: Churchill Prepares for Visit from Queen.

For those planning visits to Kentucky horse country, Elizabeth LaBan, FOB, wrote this tour of Kentucky for the Philadelphia Inquirer: Bluegrass Bonanza.

Good Morning Alex and FOB!Looks like a beautiful Derby weekend coming up, but with mixed emotions. It doesn't feel like a year since Barbaro's great victory.........But life goes on without him.Iam trying to find a favorite in the race but Iam a novice in this horse racing world. So let the best horse win. I hope its a Pennslyvania breed horse(hint). We'll see.

Good morning... a repost from yesterday afternoon...

Excerpt from The Church of Barbaro...

"They've turned their sights on federal horse slaughter laws, burning up the phone lines. Their fervor can be mistaken for the handiwork of professional political operatives. One congressional aide, after yet another call, finally asked: Who is funding you? Who is organizing you? Who are you people?

"We're just Fans of Barbaro," the caller answered."

Good Morning Barbaro !!

I loved the article Church of Barbaro ! Oddly enough Sunday when talking to Linnie about how to collect the $29 checks at the Celebration, I picked a large bowl off the table told her it could be our "collection plate" and she could go table to table and pass it around. I told her it would be like an old fashioned tent revival..and so it was, a tent revival/birthday party for our Barbaro.

In case any of you did not read this, while we were celebrating Barbaro's birthday at Celebrations all over the country and silently in our own homes...La Ville Rouge and Dynaformer were busy making a baby!!! YES, it is true. La Ville Rouge was bred to Dynaformer on BARBARO'S
BIRTHDAY!!!

I will volunteer to serve as interim devotional leader in our church until a staff can be appointed..

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!!

Good Thursday morning all members of the Barbaro family

Like many others, I have mixed feelings about the Derby. Without question, it is exciting, but there is that twinge of sadness because of missing Barbaro and wishing he was still with us. However, we must still fight on for the good causes in his honor. Please motivate as many people as you can to place calls to get these anti-slaughter bills moving. The horrific slaughter of our horses MUST stop.

Have a wonderful day all!!!

Good morning FOB's and of course our boy as well. As the Derby approaches we fight on as FOB's. It will be a very emotional day as will 2 weeks later. Barbaro wish you were here to parade in front of your fans! God we wished for that. Enjoy sweetie, we are ALL WITH YOU!

Just thinking of Barbaro watching the race Saturday from above. I can see him now wanting to get into the run. This hurt just doesn't end. God bless you Big Boy!

Hi Alex - I'm catching up from yesterday - wow, what an article on the "Church of Barbaro", a definite keeper.

I wanted to thank you so much for your participation in the party on Sunday. It was a very special day for all of us. Meeting the Jacksons and Mike Rea and his sisters was truly amazing; they are wonderful people as you well know.

I used to work in Philly, right across the street from the Turf club so I could bet on the triple crown (my once a year wagering extravaganza :o)). Now I guess I'll have to go to Philadelphia Park. Thank you for your insight on the horses...I have to put something on Hardspun, but I always like to select more than one horse too. It's amazing that Hardspun will be wearing "Barbaro's" number...prophetic do you think?

Have a good day, all!

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, thanks for the link to the article describing Churchill Downs' preparations for the Queen's visit this Saturday. Very interesting reading. I was in the infield in 1974 when Princess Margaret and Earl Snowdon visited. Needless to say, our paths didn't cross! Also, thanks for Elizabeth LeBan's article. Brent & I are planning a visit to the horse farms in June of 2008, so Elizabeth L's article has some great info.

Wishing everyone a productive day. With the ghastly reopening of Cavel, passage of HR 503 is even more important now!

#### To Harriette, may I be one of the deaconesses in The Church of Barbaro? I am confused, though. I thought La Ville Rouge just delivered on 04/02/07. Has she been mated again (already?) with Dynaformer? ####

Posted by: Robyn Hoffmann at May 3, 2007 12:31 PM

Yes, Robyn she has been bred again on Barbaro's birthday !!! Poor La Ville Rouge has been mostly pregnant for 5 years...The Jackson's are hoping for a girl this time...

Good moring everyone,
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a letter to the Editor, and sent it to all the local papers in my area. It was published in one of the papers, and alot of people called.

Last night there was a artical from the Humane Society thanking and congratulating Senator Arlem Spector for his efforts to stop dog fighting and cockfighting. It was from Michael Markarin, Executive Vice President of the Humane Society of the United States, Washington D.C.

Maybe we should do this and thank all that have supported HR503/S311. I know that I will be thanking Senator Specter in my local paper for his support of S311. I also an going to cut this artical out and sent it to him with a copy of my letter.

Maybe the Senators needs a little thank you.

Have a great day!

Good Morning Sunshine, Barbaro

We miss you, We love you! Your legacy will live on as long as we have a breath of air in our bodies. Run pain free, sweetie. You and Gallant Secret are a match in Heaven, along with your friends.

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

If I May Share With You:

MY HEART:

If I could name all the things I love in this world,
They would number one million and one.
For the heart He gave me I thank God above,
Tho' I must suffer injustices done.

You always want a horse, a dog, or a cat,
Then never give them the proper care.
You drop them off on the side of the road
When the responsibility is too much to bear.

They're left all alone to fend for themselves;
To starve, to suffer, to die.
And for every one of your inhumane acts
I must be the one to cry.

I sometimes wonder why my heart is soft,
Why I can't close my eyes and not see
All the cruel deeds committed by you,
People, who are pitied by me
Because, even tho' you have a heart,
It only beats, it can never feel,
The joys, and yes, pains of loving a pet;
Deep emotions so very real.

So I'll go on loving and caring,
For me that is just a part,
But oftentimes I'll wonder,
Lord, why did you give me this heart?

Have a blessed day...

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Tim and Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

There is one line from Elizabeth LaBan's article that sums up the last year for me -

"But if there is anything present in the breeding sheds and in the air at Churchill Downs just weeks before the Kentucky Derby, it is hope."

Barbaro gave me hope for the future: Hope for another Triple Crown winner, hope for his recovery, hope for better racetrack conditions, hope for an end to horse slaughter. For this hope, I thank Barbaro and every one of his Fans.

Have a great day and prayers to all in need.

Good morning FOB

Harriette, in this church, we all seem to be volunteers. That is one thing that tells me this is my church. You are the perfect devotional leader! We can all be interim and enjoy role change.

We are not "desperate for direction." We seem to know our gifts and are ready to use them.

I'm in the choir, singing praises of Barbaro, the FOB,and the Higher Power that put us all together.

I'm also sitting in the pew marveling at this experience and wondering where it is going!

Blessings to all,

Good morning Alex, even though you have been back for a while, I have to say, once again, how great it is to have you back - you were missed that much.

Good morning, wonderful FOBs. Love all the pictures & articles. The Church of Barbaro is special.

Doesn't seem possible the Derby is in 2 days. I still have snow in my yard! I look forward to seeing each horse run individually, but I wish it were a smaller number. When the number of horses in a given race is this high, I get nervous. God speed and a safe trip to all.

We've got business to tend to. KEEP CALLING.

While changing channels during the intermission of the hockey game last night, I turned on TVG and during the show Lady Luck, they made reference to the FOB's and their celebration of Barbaro's birthyday. It was at about 10:50pm CST, and unfortunately I did not catch the entire segment but they did mention that the group is very active in horse related issues and one of the hosts made a comment to the effect that this is a group that is becomming a major force (not her exact words but you get the idea).

Did anyone else see that on TVG last night?

A WARM WELCOME TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED US!!

As you know, on Wednesday, April 25, S311 was voted on and passed in the Senate Commerce Committee. This means it is now released and can be put on the senate calendar for a full vote. While this is WONDERFUL news, our fight is very far from over. Actually, according to our sources, the real battle is just beginning.

We still must get HR503 out of the House Committees. This could be a problem. The leadership of both committees in the House, the Commerce Committee and the Agricultural Committee are AGAINST the bill. It seems that our best shot is to get the senate leadership to put S311 on the calendar for a full vote. However, the only way to assure this happening is by getting more co-sponsors in the Senate. We need co-sponsors in BOTH the Senate and the House. The more support, the better our chance for moving this forward.

FYI: The House and Senate bills can move separately, and if one passes (say it's S311), then the House could also pass the Senate version. It doesn't matter what the title or bill number is. Both houses of Congress just have to pass identical pieces of legislation, and both 503 and 311 are identical.

There are a few of you that are questioning this strategy and wondering why we are not targeting the committees. We have been informed that nothing will happen without more co-sponsors. For this reason, we have been ASKED to keep contacting any of our own senators and congressmen that are not yet on board. Please remember to NOT place calls to those that are already co-sponsors.

As most of you know, the strategy can change at any time. When we receive new instructions, we will pass them along to you immediately.

IMPORTANT!!!!!.....It has come to our attention that some of the aides in DC are getting our two bills confused with HR249 that was passed in the House last week. HR249 is for the protection of our Wild Horses. That bill was passed in the House and now has to go to the Senate. OUR bill HR503 was NOT passed in the House but is still in committee. And it still needs co-sponsors.
Please make sure they understand the difference.

I was a little worried this would happen but I thought it would happen amongst ourselvesnot with the people in DC!!!! If they tell you that our bill is out of committee in the House, please politely explain the difference. This could make a huge difference since some of them are saying that no more co-sponsors are needed!! Thats just NOT true.

It is important to remember that our opponents have not become complacent and they have not given up. They are more determined than ever! They continue to make their voices heard and we must be louder.

Many of you are working with other groups also. While all the strategies are good, our success has come by following the directives that are given to us. Our contacts in Washington have asked us to stay focused on those directives.

For those of you are members of the state groups, please go back to Stephanies original strategy. It has proven to be very successful and has gotten very good results. The response to our request for an Illinois group has been answered. Right now, Illinois needs our help. If you live in Illinois please contact w.szara@comcast.net

Alex has posted links on the anti slaughter site for your convenience. You can easily access both co-sponsor lists and more information about the state groups.

The momentum is with us.and never forget, WE ARE BARBAROS VOICE! Make those calls and send those faxes for him and all the horses.

If you think one person wont make a difference, youre WRONG!!

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; Indeed its the only thing that ever has..Margaret Mead

Thanks and have a great day.

Good morning and once again, Alex and Tim, thank you for EVERYTHING.

###
Alex, that article was wonderful. Truly wonderful. I emailed the author and thanked him for doing such a fantastic job.

###
Not sure what to d with this year's Derby crop. I've got favorites but mostly because of the jockey on board. Edgar, of course. Calvin, indeed. Mark Guidry (he rode Lemons Forever last year in the Oaks and did a wonderful job. I still loved that story).

###
Have a good day, all, and keep up the good work. I write a column for the local newspaper on horses and horse-related activities in the High Desert and I mention FOBs and Tim Woolley Racing.com every so often.

Again, thanks to everyone. You all are amazing!

Thanks Alex for all the updates.

Just read an article about the Jacksons and the new foal. Some good news in the article..

Even at not quite two weeks old, Barbaro's brother long on legs and spunk

http://www.cbc.ca/cp/sports/070502/s050283A.html

an excerpt:

Roy Jackson says he's closely guarding the names of the other hounds in the picture because they will likely be used to complete Barbaro's family tree.

On Sunday, stallion Dynaformer and La Ville Rouge mated for the fourth time, and Gretchen Jackson says she's hoping it will produce Barbaro's first filly sibling to continue the lineage. And there could be even more family members after that one is born, she said.

Let's all say a prayer for a safe racing weekend..

HURRAH, TWO NEW CO-SPONSORS...but as Shelley and Deb have told us, we must have MANY more co-sponsors on board to get these bills out of committee and onto the floor for a vote...to end the nightmare of horse slaughter forever, to "Do Right By Barbaro!"

Please get your family/friends/acquaintances to help by calling and faxing...provide the contact info to make it easy for them...and if they don't "get it" (like most of the people I know, unfortunately), just apply a bit of guilt and ask them to DO YOU A FAVOR...this strategy has worked quite well for me with people I know in other states where sponsors are desperately needed! It doesn't hurt to ask them to let you know the results...whether they actually spoke with an aide, or sent a fax, or left a voicemail - IT ALL COUNTS!

Thanks to everyone who fights the good fight every day to fulfill the legacy of our beloved Barbaro!

I really enjoyed the article yesterday. Like Debbie Singer, who posted yesterday, I am uncomfortable with the church analogy, though. I have a church where I worship, so I really just consider all of you to be great friends and coworkers -- not parishioners -- and Barbaro to be a wonderful, wonderful horse, fighting spirit, and athlete -- not a god. But I did appreciate the article, in general.

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at May 3, 2007 2:21 PM

First I want to say:

Dear Nancy, I am so sorry for the loss of your sister. Know we all love you and will be here for you when you are ready.

You can go to the DB and leave condolences for Nancy and her sister.

I also saw on the DB last night that Dallas Crown is to reopen on May 29, my birthday of all days!!! I need to know if this is true and if so, how?
I thought it was ruled illegal to slaughter in Texas!

I finally got to watch the video of Barbaro's baby brother 2. I must say, he is quite the sprite. I see so much of Barbaro in him. The way he holds himself, his curiosity and mostly, the way he carries himself when he takes of for a full run, he looks just like Barbaro...shifting gears and just going...
This new little one healed a part of my heart that still hurts for Barbaro.
Little Nicky is quite the looker too. On the DB there is a side by side picture of B & Nicky and the resemblance is just unreal, both with their heads turned and with that LOOK. I would like to think both will go on to great things, but if I had to make a bet now, I would put my money on BBB2. His knees are as high in the air as La Ville's. He is so tall and has quite the stride already. But even if he doesn't, that is fine too, just to watch him move is such a joy, I could watch him all day long, he reminds me that much of Barbaro.
Well I have rambled on enough for today, I need to get to those calls.
Love to ALL,
Verna

Verna, It's good to see you posting. I agree with you about BBB2. I sure would like to see him and Nicanor do well though. Where can I find the picture of Barbaro and Nicanar side by side? How is your sister doing? I hope she is doing well.

Good Mornigg FOBs

I just returned from a trip to Lexington. I went to Keeneland last Friday to see the last day of races. Despite the weather it was a wonderful day. I saw Edgar ride a winner. Very exciting.

Lexington is a wonderful city especially for horse lovers. The farms are breathtaking.

Just catching up with all of the posts and articles. Some have made me cry.

Have a good day FOBs!

HAY, ALL...DIVE RIGHT IN AND MAKE YOUR WAGERS ON MISTY'S FOALING DATE! Right now the water in Misty's foaling pool is still shallow - we need all of us to show our support! C'mon, guys...Misty is as much "ours" as Rosie - they were both in the original "In honor of Barbaro rescue" and we raised $1,500+ for Rosie's birth pool...doesn't Misty deserve the same attention???

Misty, along with Rosie (proud mama of Bobby's Lil' Angel) was among the first FOB rescues and lives at Miracle Horse Rescue. Misty, at the age of 26, is a high-risk mama-to-be and is expected to foal within the next 3 weeks.

$5. per wager on the date and time of her foaling (all times are Pacific time zone)...please show Misty the same support we all showed Rosie! Misty will NEVER be up for adoption...she will live out her life at MHR. The person whose bet comes closest to the time of Misty's foaling gets to select the rescue who will receive the proceeds...it would be great if MHR could receive these funds to support Misty in her "retirement"...no more foals for this beautiful old gal!

Good Morning FOBs...
That's great news about picking up 2 more co-sponsors for S. 311, we need to get the ball rolling more in the Senate AND House for co-sponsors. So keep following the anti-slaughter directives and make your calls!
On another note....I too am having some mixed feelings about Deby Weekend, and perhaps my emotions will be even worse Preakness Weekend. The 2 "big Anniversarys" for Barbaro. Not sure how I will handle the Preakness weekend knowing what transpired last year, but will get thru it. I think I miss B more now than I did when he was first put down....

getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of
getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Hi Jonna,
Please contact Stephanie directly at sbreaux1@verizon.net and she will fill you in on the individual state group strategy.

MORNING REPOST

If you think one person won't make a difference, you're WRONG!!

Susan E and Robyn Hoffman - Over Enough is doing much better, thanks for asking. The vet is coming tomorrow to hopefully take the tube out so he can get out of the stall - he has been in the stall for 9 weeks. He is bright eyed this week for the first time in many weeks. Nala is doing great - finished her chemo and has to stay on her cancer diet, supplements and some other medicine. Her bloodwork and xrays showed no sign of cancer, so thankful for that.

The last horse to win from the 2 post that Curlin drew was Affirmed in 1978 - the last triple crown winner.

Great news on the new co-sponsors, Floridians we need to get going on our 2 senators who were both co-sponsors last year!

Perfect Drift, the warrior horse is running tomorrow on Oaks Day in a stakes race.

Dancing Forever, the colt by Dancinginmydreams won yesterday at Churchill. They announced the story on HRTV after the race and it is also in the Thoroughbred Times today. Dancinginmydreams had a very similar injury to Barbaro and spent over a year at New Bolton, this is her first foal. The headlines reads "Dancing Forever tips cap to Barbaro." Missing you this week Barbaro.

May I ask a respectful question? If La Ville Rouge was already bred to Dynaformer and since the mare travels to the stallion - who is nursing little baby brother while mommy is away? Please tell me it is not a nursemare who had her foal taken away - like the very ones we are saving at the Last Chance Corral. I am really more than a little worried that while we are saving foals in one spot - we are actually watching it happen somewhere else by someone who should know better. I am not a troll - i am a long time poster and have nothing but admiration for the Jacksons so i sincerely hope this isn't the case. Anybody out there know for sure?

Here's a new one:
The Plastic Fantastic Auto-Aide at Randy Kuhl's office refused to take my call DUE TO CONGRESSIONAL COURTESY. I started to tell this little drone that she would be getting LOTS of calls out of the Congressman's area, told her I'd already called MY congressman. (WALSH: no comment there, kind FoBs)--tried to the usual polite explanation about National Issue, National Committee--but she rudely interrupted me MANY times with this CONGRESSIONAL COURTESY BS.
I really needed that. I asked her to explain this CONGRESSIONAL COURTESY to me...but, gee, she wouldn't/couldn't. i TOLD HER i'D ALREADY CALLED MY OWN WONDERFUL CONGRESSMAN....no matter.
Damn, if only I was still a Drinking Gal....I'd be on the J&B on the rocks as we "speak....."

Alex and All,

There's an article in New York Times today, "Year Later, Barbaro's Doctor Looks Back- Moves On" I don't know how to blue line it or I would but it's worth reading. Here is one provocative quote.

"Speaking of Richardson in an interview last week trainer Michael Matz said "'There's things I would have changed"'.

Wish they would have elaborated. In looking back Richardson said today he would have done the original surgery somewhat differently.

There's always more to learn, he did the best given the circumstances.

*****If La Ville Rouge was already bred to Dynaformer and since the mare travels to the stallion - who is nursing little baby brother while mommy is away?

The baby normally travels with Mommy if it is a long distance (states away)- or, if it is a short drive, Mommy gets a car ride and comes back shortly. Is Mill Ridge pretty close to Three Chimneys?

In your calls, and/or if you prepare a fax to send along, PLEASE mention (among other things) that the reason the legislators are NOT hearing from rescue organizations as to their ability to absorb the unslaughtered horse population, is that these organizations are federal 501(c)(3) not for profit corporations - and as such are PROHIBITED BY FEDERAL LAW per the terms of their corporate charters, FROM LOBBYING.

This point applies whether you are talking to Illinois or federal legislators.

My Journey...Riding With Barbaro

From the moment my little silver VW Beetle drove onto the Bluewater Bridge at Sarnia Ont and I sat terrified on the crest for 45minutes while it swayed from the weight of the many cars and 18wheel trucks I felt a special force was with me.....many miracles happened...
I had NO CURRENT PASSPORT(mine was 25yrs old) only a birth certificate and a car with westcoast plates and a westcoast drivers permit....I wasin the middle of a homeland amber security alert!!!!!As I sat I prayed that the US Customs officer would be kind and I asked Barbaro to intercede on my behalf...when I pulled up and my license plate was photographed I continued silently to pray!! I was asked my citizenship...Canadian!!! Please hand my documentation????.....What is the purpose of your trip????....that was my cue ...I replied if I tell you you won't believe me!!!!...she replied..try me!!! Out it all came ...the Barbaro Story!!!I could see her whole demeanor change as I told of all the great things FOB's have done for horses!!!
What came next blew me away!!!....she smiled and said..."I hope you have an absolutely wonderful weekend and now you better hurry I don't want you to miss your plane!!!!!The BARBARO EFFECT!!!!

Everyones journey with Barbaro is different....mine has always been spiritual!!!
Each person I came in contact with along the way...I told the Barbaro ...FOB Story...each time I ended with the anti-slaughter legislation and every response was the same...what can we do to help???? .....phone..fax or email your senators and congressmen and order them to support our bills...everyone was happy to do so!!!!

A Special Moment.....almost all the people had left the big white tent ....only a few of us lingered not wanting to let the memories go!!!! It was approx 8pm but there was still some light at Del Park....I had managed to snaffoo a balloon bouquet...someone told us to go outside to the grassy area at the rear of the tent with our balloons ...there were maybe ten of us ....at the appropriate moment we silmultaniously released the balloons...they all flew high over the track but one balloon separated from all the rest...it headed to the right and soared higher than all the rest....as we sang Happy Birthday Barbaro I visualized the strength of your love....YOU WERE ALL THERE IN THAT PRECIOUS MOMENT WITH BARBARO and I !!!!!!!God bless you all...I Luv Ya !!!

******
To Dee....our special race was the 7th....there was a horse called Way to OZ....I thought of you sweet lady and I wagered on Way to Oz to win place or show...he came second!!! I won a small amount!!! Thank you Dee !!!!

Sorry this is so long....so sorry to all I didn't meet but the ones I did were just as I had visualized them...gotta go for now and do some stuff to deal with the Cavel situation for Angela...Hugs to ALL!!!

JUST AFTERNOON REPOST

I was a little worried this would happen but I thought it would happen amongst ourselves, not with the people in DC!!!! If they tell you that our bill is out of committee in the House, please politely explain the difference. This could make a huge difference since some of them are saying that no more co-sponsors are needed!! That's just NOT true.

For those of you are members of the state groups, please go back to Stephanie's original strategy.

The momentum is with us. WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE! Make those calls and send those faxes for him and all the horses.

If you think one person won't make a difference, you're WRONG!!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; Indeed it's the only thing that ever has......

Thanks and have a great day.

IMPORTANT REPOST...

I LOVE YOU, BIG BOSS HORSE!

Hello all,

Just dropping in from lurking to say thank you to Alex for your hard work in posting all the links, etc.

Ever since getting home from DelPk Monday afternoon, I have had to force myself to focus on work. That's life when you work in publishing. It stinks. I haven't had time to read anything, look at any pictures, etc. etc., not here, not on the forum, nowhere. But I'm having a hard time dealing with this Derby. Somehow I want that moment to be frozen in time. And yet I don't want the glory to be taken from this year's winner because as the Hennegans' film so beautifully shows, it is such a life-changing moment of glory for all connected to the winning horse. They all work so hard to get there.

Anyway, back to work. Guess I'll catch up on everything once the Derby is over :( I just want all horses to travel safely. And I want to look forward to 2009 or 2010 when Nicanor or little bro are ready for the roses!

Good Afternoon to All,

In the last couple of days much has been mentioned about the need for "follow up;" i.e. caring for all the horses we save. I've brought up two ideas for this, unfortunately, my timing seems to have been terrible; my first idea was hidden by the birth of Barbaro's newest brother and the second by the impending DelPark celebration.

To recap:
First idea: Buy Meadow Farm in Doswell, VA and use it along the idea of KY Horse Park and Old Friends AND provide a permanent home for VA's Equine Rescue League. Any ideas and/or help? (I know the barns etc have been purchased by the VA State Fair, but I think we could make a deal.)
Second idea: Buy Hialeah and other tracks that aren't being used or are neglected. Much of the facilities needed, barns etc. are already in place and there is a built in exercise area (the track). These could be temporary homes until the horses are adopted etc.

Please, I need feedback. Are these good ideas? Are they feasible? Am I on the wrong track? Help?

One way of raising funds I thought could be for every FOB to set aside one dollar a week for this. We had about 600 FsOBs at DelPark, that would be about $2400 per month alone! In no time we could have enough $$ to accomplish our goals AND we could have quite a bit to donate to Laminitis Reasearch, other Rescues, etc.

I respect your opinions and love you all. Thanks to Tim and Alex for giving us this forum and the ability to work together for the horses.

Did he forget about Barbaro from post eight last year?

Thank you for the input and support Joan. It really means a lot to me. I'm full of ideas, but I never know if any of them are worth the effort or if they're darn good ones. My ideas are to provide homes, temporary until adoption or permanent retirement homes. So many horses spend their entire lives around a track and a former track or training farm, I think, would be a good place for them.
I don't know, maybe me not being a horse owner, my ideas are not sound. But I'm certainly willing to work with anyone who can help or help them. If Daryl (or anyone) wants to contact me, my email is:

I read somewhere that when he was born that he was so big that they nicknamed him "Baby Huey". lol I'm not happy about post #2 but Asmussen must know what he is doing!! We won't be able to miss that big beautiful red-coated colt as he runs the Derby!!!!

....GO CURLIN!!!

Bobbycakes I love and miss you and the heartache is returning again full force as this year's Derby approaches.

Hello FoBs,

Here's our next mandate~~~~~ safer racing surfacesI I saw this on our local morning news then found the link to it. Michael D., inventor of the Tapeta track, was quite eloquent during his presentation to the FoBs at Fair Hill about how safer surfaces equate to less injuries. California is the first state to mandate the conversion to Synthetic tracks by 2008, how about making this a mandate for everywhere?

Congrats to Tim and Alex. TWO WINNERS today! What a great day. I'm so proud of Mediman and Gator Nation, as I'm sure Tim and Alex are.

D'Anne: Hmm, it is not on today. Probably have to hope they show the interview tomorrow or Saturday.

Are these good ideas? Yes
Are they feasible? Not sure?
Who lives near the tracks, who could take care of the horses?
Daryl Smoliak and Michelle Tolley are the ones to talk too. But I think they are more in to raising funds.
Do you have their email?
Michelle just sent me a great letter to fax the senators.

That is such great news about Senators Inouye and Rockefeller! We so desperately need more co-sponsors, in both the Senate and the House, in order to end horse slaughter during this session of Congress.

I am BEGGING you all to focus as much attention as you possibly can to getting everyone in your state to co-sponsor. Please join your state group if you have not already done so. We even need the silent readers to do this. I know that many of you who don't post here are uncomfortable about privacy issues -- that's why you don't post here -- but I think you can work it out with your state leader to keep your contact info confidential. We just need you so badly in the state groups right now.

And those of you who post regularly and have not yet joined your state group -- PLEASE do this. It is the single most effective step that you, personally, can take to ban horse slaughter permanently in this country.

Congratulation Tim and Alex - two winners in one day (and three this week). Way to go Gatornation and Mediman. That's great news.

###Sophie, I think your idea is great, I know Meadow Farm is being sold off piece by piece, pretty soon will belong to the developers. And the racetrack's that are shutting down would be great too because they're already set up for horses, sadly they sometimes are in prime property locations and the developers gather them up. Keep the ideas coming I like 'em and who knows what can happen.

Debbie L.A.
Thank you. The questions you raise, who lives near etc. are what I need. Like I said, I have ideas, but fleshing them out and making them reality are a weakness I have. I don't have Daryl nor Michelle's emails.

The FsOB family is wonderful.

Judy in Ontario,
Sadly, the developers are buying up our history. Wouldn't it be great though if the FsOB could buy up all those pieces of Meadow Farm and save it? and give horses a home?
Your support means a lot too me. One thing about my mind, it never stops coming up with ideas. LOL My sense of timing in introducing those ideas needs work. And who knows? Something will come out of them for good. Even if I create a spark that works out and saves a horse I'll be ecstatic.
