    Barbaro Updates: 277

    updates are here.

Update 1875: I just spent a pleasant afternoon hanging out with Mike Rea at Freedom Hills. A lovely afternoon to go for a trail ride, and I really believe Mike is showing more progress.

    Here is today's Preakness release:

BALTIMORE, MD. 05-10-07---For the first time since last Saturday's Run for the Roses, trainer Steve Asmussen confirmed in an NTRA Teleconference that Curlin, the Kentucky Derby morning line favorite and third place finisher, will start in the Preakness Stakes. With his announcement, the 1-2-3 finishers from the Kentucky Derby along with seven possible new shooters, will line-up at Pimlico to run in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

Asmussen said, "We do plan on running him in the Preakness. The only hesitation was waiting for him to go back to the track. Heading off of his first defeat, I was very curious were he would be mentally. You would expect them to be nervous, in little things but he's not shown any indication of that. His appetite has stayed good. He's a big strong horse. Very pleased with how he came out of the race physically and very relaxed going onto the track. Just wanted to make sure it was still him.

"The Derby is an experience like no other. Not only do you have to be good enough, you have to be very fortunate. I think the race Street Sense ran was worthy of a Derby victory and the race Hard Spun ran was worthy of being second. When you look at the race after the fact you beat seventeen of the best three-year-olds in the country at one time. We just didn't beat the other two."

Asmussen also confirmed that jockey Robby Albarado will retain the mount on Curlin.

At Churchill Downs, Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense galloped a mile and a quarter. The Carl Nafzger trainee will work Tuesday and ship into Pimlico on the second flight out of Louisville Wednesday morning. The son of Street Cry will be stabled in Stall 40 of the stakes barn, which is reserved for the Derby winner.

"He'll walk tomorrow and we'll go from there," said Nafzger about his training plans leading up to the Preakness. "Once we get to Pimlico he'll walk Thursday and gallop on the track Friday morning."

Hard Spun continues to rebound from his stellar Derby performance at his home at Delaware Park. Trainer Larry Jones said, "I couldn't be more pleased. He jogged three-eighths of a mile and galloped a mile and a quarter. He's very happy and relaxed right now. It's amazing. This horse ran a mile and a quarter, rode ten hours in a van and now we're in the vicinity of Baltimore and he's doing this well, this early. It's very encouraging. I wouldn't have expected him to be back to this stage until next Monday or Tuesday."

Trainer Todd Pletcher has named John Velazquez to ride King of the Roxy in the Preakness. King of the Roxy has made seven lifetime starts and Velazquez has ridden him twice, to a second place finish in the Saratoga Special and to victory in the Futurity at Belmont Park.

Word from the Fair Hill Training Center continues to be upbeat on the status of Federico Tesio Stakes winner Xchanger. Trainer Mark Shuman said, "He's doing super. He galloped a mile and three-quarters this morning. He's really getting sharp. This horse couldn't be doing better right now. Hopefully today, we'll have a better idea of who will be riding him. It's really become a day to day thing now."

Trainer Jamie Sanders told staffers in the Pimlico racing office that Teuflesberg will van from Churchill Downs Saturday, accompanied by four other horses pointing to added-money events on Preakness weekend.

Bowie-based Mint Slewlep will add the finishing touches to his Preakness preparations when he ships to Pimlico this weekend. Trainer Robbie Bailes said, "Everything is going very well. He jogged two miles this morning. Our plans are to get him into Pimlico very early Sunday morning and train over the track and give him a chance to get familiar with his surroundings. We haven't made a decision on a rider, but that should happen within the next two days."

Hall of Fame conditioner D. Wayne Lukas will start either Derby Trial winner Flying First Class and/or Starbase, second in the Lexington Stakes.

Others considering the Preakness are Withers runner-up C P West, from the Nick Zito barn, and the Michael Matz trained Chelokee, who finished third in the Florida Derby.

Sedgefield, who finished a surprising fifth in the Run For The Roses, has been dropped from consideration from next Saturday's headliner according to Daily Racing Form.

Update 1874: Congratulations to Ramon Dominguez for passing the 3,000 winner career mark: Dominguez gets 3,000th career victory.

Don't forget, Dr. Richardson is on Talkin' Horses today at 2 pm.

Update 1873: Another nice quiet morning for me at Fair Hill, with three to ride. It was a little foggy and muggy, but with recent memories of winter (and a short morning) I was not complaining. First was Grandma. She went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a half. Tim was with us on Mediman. Grandma was a little wound up before she galloped, but settled down nicely in her gallop and walked home very quietly. Second set was Nautical Agent, she galloped a mile and a quarter on the Tapeta, Tim was on Who's Happy, doing the same thing. Both went well. Finally I took Gator Nation across the fields with Tim on Nonpariel. We had a nice hack around the outside of the (2 mile) field, and both were very relaxed. We met another set of horses coming the other way around the field, but no wildlife! Finally I did a short interview with WGAL Channel 8 (NBC), it should air either next wednesday or thursday. It seems they are at Fair Hill all morning, and were at New Bolton Center yesterday. I was being asked about this website and the Fans of Barbaro phenomena, of course I can talk about that all day!

Update 1872: Mike Jensen writes about Chelokee's (not yet determined) near term plan, and also notes Hard Spun is back galloping at Delaware Park: Matz might run Chelokee in Barbaro Stakes, excerpt:

"He'll gallop every day," said Jones, who isn't planning on breezing Hard Spun before the Preakness. "We'll plan on going out there every morning. I actually did a little more with him than I intended to when I went out there because he just felt like he wanted to do a little more. We jogged a half-mile, galloped a mile. Everything went well."

Over at Fair Hill, a few miles away, Matz said he would be watching his horse carefully over the coming days.

"My horse has been taking little steps forward all the time, and I want to keep him that way," Matz said. "And it's a long year and there are some big races coming up. I don't know if he's as good as those first three [Derby] horses. But I don't know that he isn't."

I ran into Mike Jensen last night, attending Dr. Richardson's lecture. It was a great event. Dr. Richardson, a man who is clearly at the very top of his profession, still carries guilt that comes along with failing to save Barbaro, it was evident throughout the evening. His presentation was very interesting and provided some back content that helped me understand a little more some of the "behind the scenes" work that went on throughout the months (pool recovery process etc). Dr. Richardson entertained many questions with ease. We were also able to make a couple of presentations. I presented some cheques from Delaware Park from the Laminitis Fund drive, and Jessica presented the artwork created by Anna (and cheque): Update #4 Dr. R's Artwork Gift. All in all a great evening, meeting and seeing again some wonderful FOBs!

Hiya, FsOB! Sounds like a great lecture by Dr. Richardson last PM. Any news on the situation with Cavel in IL?

Wishing everyone a productive day! Peace, RMH

    #### To Lynne Brown, I loved yesterday's "Lady at the Fence" update. Hard to believe that the horses get Oreos! I wonder if Barbaro ever had any of those?
To David Letell: Interesting idea about Barbaro's newest little brother perhaps being the reincarnation of the Big Bay One. From what I've been taught, reincarnation doesn't usually occur so quickly, but it does reportedly occur sooner if the deceased had significant "unfinished business". I am sure that there are FsOB who have had more formal education about these principles than I have had. But the way this new little guy was galloping around that ring at eight days old.... ####

Here is a nice synopsis of Dr. R's talk I found on the Rockport Harbor website:

I just wanted to post a little about tonight's event I went to. Turns out some folks from here where there like Jean and Lynne (GreenAcres). Jean asked me to tell everyone her DSL is broken so she can't get on line at the moment but wanted to say 'hi' to everyone. And I also ran into Shelly (Mr. Boxcar's owner) and chatted with her a bit. She said Mr. Boxcar was off a bit and he'll be back in a few weeks.

Tonight was amazing. Some of the FOBs were there, Alex from the Tim Wooley site was there too. They sold bracelets, the DVD, and t shirts outside and Mother's Day roses, all proceeds went to laminitis research. The education foundation presented him with donations from everywhere, it was very sweet.

I felt like I came the closest to meeting and knowing Barbaro tonight, minus meeting the Jacksons or Michael. Dr. Richardson gave a great slideshow that spanned over the 8 months. At the beginning of the event, they handed out tissue packets. I think they all got used. It was so emotional listening to him talk about the injury and Barbaro's recovery and then when they decided to stop. He spoke of dealing with the media and explained the only reason we knew of all of that was because of the Jacksons. That unless the owners give permission, nobody knows who goes in and out of NBC. They played the NBC documentary again and everyone got emotional again over it. I felt like I lived the whole Barbaro experience in a little over an hour.

He took questions afterwards. I asked if he thought he'd ever see a cure for laminitis in his lifetime. He said he thinks in 10 years they will have a lot of advances in the technology and the research so he's optimistic. He took questions about the Jacksons, polytrack, the grueling schedule of the Triple Crown (he thinks the races should be spread out more), and some obvious ones that most people know already.

The powerpoint presentation he had was amazing. They had video footage of Barbaro in the raft and him waking up after the anesthesia and taken back to his stall. Of all the visitors. And he was very funny, making jokes about certain things, about dealing with the media and all. It was very lighthearted and emotional at the same time. He said he was half embarrassed to be there because they failed.

It was just wonderful, you felt like Barbaro was there, his spirit was there. The woman in charge had her 12 year old son who wants to be a Vet, give Dr. Richardrson a powerpoint thing he made for him. They played that and I just lost it, it was really very emotional.

Afterwards, I stood in line to get him to sign my BloodHorse with Barbaro on it. He was very nice and gracious with everyone, but seemed humbled by the attention, even after nearly a year of it.

Thank you to Janell for the heads up, I'm sorry you couldn't make it. I'm thrilled I got the opportunity. I took some pictures I'll post later. I'll cherish it for as long as I live. I miss Barbaro every day and tonight I felt like I was with him.

Good morning everyone, Good morning Alex thanks for the article

Interesting about Chelokee. I wonder why Matz doesnt' think he's ready to challenge the big 3 in teh Preakness. He seemed to think he was horse enough to go up against them in the Derby, at least I remember him saying so.

I wonder if this foot abcess had anything to do with it

Still hope he and Edgar and Chelokee are at the starting gate for the Preakness....and that has NOTHING to do with Barbaro.

friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of
getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Good morning, Barbaro, sweet spirit horse of my dreams! I'm glad to read that Wilbur is providing much-needed assistance to you...he was a very important turkey here on earth, and I knew he would find a mission in Equine Heaven...I bet he is so proud to be working with the Big Boss Horse!

Yesterday was a very special day here - we called it the MEDIA BLITZ, and we shared a wonderful letter from your parents (and the parents of many of your pals in Equine Heaven) with newspapers all across the country! Your friend Deb made it sooooo easy for us to do this, and I think the "bad guys" are coming to see that we will not surrender and go away, that just as Edgar said, "giving up is NOT an option!"

I sent the Media Blitz links to people around the country who make calls and send faxes for me, and last night I had TWENTY-FIVE emails from people who thought the letter was very powerful and said they "had fun" sending it to so many newspapers...THANKS, DEB, for making this so easy for us all! For next Wednesday's Media Blitz, I hope all the other FOBs will forward the link to as many people as possible - THE HERD MUST BE HEARD!

Didn't you love the picture that Anna in Texas drew of you and your favorite doctor? It was soooo beautiful, and I know it was another reminder of just how much you love Dr. Dean! And lots more money for laminitis reseach, too...we WILL eventually whip that devil into the ground!!!

I love you, sweet Barbaro - you continue to inspire my days and delight my dreams - you will always remain BARBARO - CHAMPION OF MY HEART!

    Good Morning FOB's

    Strategy for Thursday May 10

We’ve heard that Media Blitz day was a tremendous success. Thanks so much to all of you who worked so hard and sent out those letters. We will have another Media Blitz day next Wednesday May 16. There may be some kinks to iron out but we’re working on that.

In the meantime, it is urgent that we continue to go after co-sponsors!!

Many of you have asked about using the letter to fax to their representatives. Go for it……it is a powerful statement from very powerful people.

We still must get HR503 out of the House Committees. This could be a problem. The leadership of both committees in the House, the Commerce Committee and the Agricultural Committee are AGAINST the bill. It seems that our best shot is to get the senate leadership to put S311 on the calendar for a full vote. However, the only way to assure this happening is by getting more co-sponsors in the Senate. We need co-sponsors in BOTH the Senate and the House. The more support, the better our chance for moving this forward.

FYI: The House and Senate bills can move separately, and if one passes (say it's S311), then the House could also pass the Senate version. It doesn't matter what the title or bill number is. Both houses of Congress just have to pass identical pieces of legislation, and both 503 and 311 are identical.
Our sources have confirmed that to target the committees at this time, would NOT be the most efficient use of our time. We have been informed that nothing will happen without more co-sponsors. For this reason, we have been ASKED to keep contacting any of our own senators and congressmen that are not yet on board. Please remember to NOT place calls to those that are already co-sponsors.

For those of you who have not yet become a member of a state group, please contact Stephanie at sbreaux1@verizon.net They have proven to be VERY effective.

Alex has posted links on the anti slaughter site for your convenience. You can easily access both co-sponsor lists and more information about the state groups. AND the Media Blitz link!!

WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE! Make those calls and send those faxes for him and all the horses.

Click on the link called Media Blitz/Horse Hands Across America and follow the instructions. This is an URGENT call to action to all FOB’s. Action must be taken again on Wednesday, May 16!!

If you think one person won’t make a difference, you’re WRONG!!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has”………………………..Margaret Mead

Thanks and have a great day.

Pennsylvania Fans of Barbaro, we NEED your help!

We have started a Pennsylvania Strategy like many of the other states have. Our team is NOW 29 strong and we’d like more of you to join us!

As you are all aware, we need more co-sponsors to get our Bills in the Senate and the House to a vote. We have a strategy for making this happen. If you’ll join us, we’ll target 3 or 4 legislators each day as a team. A simple call or fax is all it will take.

I am the Pennsylvania State Leader. Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation. You can email me at Lor in PA.

    WE NEED YOUR HELP!

So let's get out there and SAVE those horses! Call your REPS and SENATORS...do it in loving memory of our Barbaro and all the nameless, faceless horses being being trucked into Mexico and Canada and dying brutally...Please contact me and join our team if you live in Pennsylvania and want to help rescue horses from slaughter.

    I GET IT.

    Good News...

Excerpt from Michael Veitch's article in the saratogan
"THE POLYTRACK FACTOR: In most years, one or more prominent Derby hopefuls fail to make the race due to injury.
Not so this year, with prominent juveniles Street Sense, Scat Daddy, Nobiz Like Shobiz, Teuflesberg, Great Hunter, Circular Quay, Stormello and Any Given Saturday all making the race.
The growing use of polytrack and other synthetic surfaces could be a contributing factor"

NATIONAL CALL LIST FOR THURSDAY MAY 10

Nobody seems to be posting a national list lately and I like the idea of SPECIFIC people getting TARGETED to get a goodly number of calls so that they notice, on a given day. In addition to targeting our uncommitted federal legislators from Indiana, and working on the Illinois State Senators for passage of HB 1711 in Illinois, our Indiana group has been using this daily list for our federal activities pending further instructions from the strategists here. The people on these daily lists are all non-cosponsors of HR503/S311. TELL THEM IT IS A NATIONAL ISSUE and ask that your input be considered on that basis though you are not from "their" State.

    UPDATE THURSDAY MAY 10

PLEASE CONTACT Sen. OBAMA AGAIN - ask him to cosponsor S 311 (this, per request from Stephanie Breaux who is assisting the State Calling Groups).

    -Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)

    Fax #: 202-228-4260 Phone #: 202-224-2854

(Note - links to email Sen. Obama are in the Forum post URL at the bottom of this post.)

NATIONAL CALLING LIST for THURSDAY May 10 from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter Please note that these are REPS, so we are talking about HR 503.

And remind everybody you talk to, that the Rescues being 501(c)(3) NFP corporations, are forbidden by federal law from lobbying - the places and shelters are there. WE WILL ABSORB (rescue/rehab/rehome) ALL THE HORSES who can be kept acceptably comfortable and give the rest a peaceful death. Just some ideas; what I harp on.

DAILY NATIONAL LIST: MAY 10, 2007 - re HR 503

    FLORIDA (4th part)

    -Representative Kendrick B. Meek

    Fax #: 202-226-0777 Phone #: 202-225-4506

    -Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz

    Fax #: 202-226-2052 Phone #: 202-225-7931

    -Representative Alcee L. Hastings

    Fax #: 202-225-1171 Phone #: 202-225-1313

    -Representative Tom Feeney

    Fax #: 202-226-6299 Phone #: 202-225-2706

    -Representative Mario Diaz-Balart

    Fax #: 202-226-0346 Phone #: 202-225-2778

Tell aides you talk to that you are IN FAVOR OF HR 503. If not from their State, ask them to please take your input because IT IS A NATIONAL ISSUE. Remind that the House Bill that passed, HR 249, only protects WILD horses; we still need HR 503.

Ask them to cosponsor HR 503 NOW. Remind them that the Senate counterpart S 311 came out of Commerce Committee WITHOUT AMENDMENTS last week.

Stress that the WILL OF THE PEOPLE is shown by the fact that IL HB 1711 passed the Illinois House recently and PASSED UNANIMOUSLY out of an Illinois Senate Committee this week. But even though Illinois seems soon to shut down Cavel with the impending State slaughter ban, the FEDERAL law is needed to CLOSE THE BORDERS to keep the horses from going to CN and MX - and to keep the TX slaughterhouses closed.

    OFFICIAL NATIONAL STRATEGY

The National Strategy we are getting from Shelley A and Debra at TWR stresses the importance of cosponsors in both House and Senate - but also acknowledges the likelihood of HR 503 getting out of those "unfriendly" House Committees is so slim, that we are looking to get S 311 passed by the Senate and then voted on by the House (as the passed Senate Bill). And we need MORE COSPONSORS both in the House and Senate for all this to happen.

So please in addition to these targeted legislators, call any of your OWN Senators and Reps who are not yet cosponsors.

And keep calling Illinois [State] Senators to support HB 1711 per current instructions elsewhere. It's out of committee, but still has to be voted on by the Illinois Senate.

SUGGESTION - any of the legislators you fax today, please include a copy of the Letter from Owners of KD Winners (from yesterday's media blitz) with your fax.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK - WE ARE SO CLOSE!

I will continue to post the daily lists here as soon as I get my daily email digest from Humanity against Horse Slaughter. The latest list will always be in post 1 of this Forum thread via daily (week-day) edits.

Here's the morning repost. Pls join a state call in group!!!!

Regarding the movie 'in the works' about Secretariat ... from an article I just read, the central focus of the movie (besides Big Red, of course) will be on Penny Chenery, as it should be. There have been 'mentions' of Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett or possibly Jodie Foster. Here's the entire article which, by the way, is an excellent one covering an interview with William Nack who wrote "Secretariat - The Making of a Champion". Barbaro and Ruffian are also mentioned in this article.

Racing in the spotlight for right reasons
    1. INDUSTRY STILL RIDING WAVE OF MOMENTUM POST BARBARO
    By John Clay
    HERALD-LEADER SPORTS COLUMNIST

Television ratings for the Kentucky Derby spiked.
    1. The final numbers arrive today, but NBC's overnights showed a 12 percent increase from last year, its best showing in 15 years.

Calvin Borel is an instant celebrity.

The touching scene immediately after Borel's winning ride in the Derby was so moving it whisked the 40-year-old jockey right to the White House for the white-tie state dinner, where he all but upstaged her majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Street Sense is a star. The first Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner to also snare the Derby has the sport thinking Triple Crown bid, though the impressive victor's two closest rivals on Saturday promise they will be at Baltimore for a powerhouse Preakness.

Often lost in the wilderness of the vast sports landscape, thoroughbred racing appears to be experiencing a mini-revival.

    What gives?

"I think it's Barbaro," said William Nack on Monday night, in town to promote his book Ruffian: A Racetrack Romance and the upcoming ESPN movie which airs the night of the Belmont, June 9.
It might seem odd a horse no longer with us, whose life ended so tragically, could increase interest. Except, it's not really the horse. It's the story of the horse, of Barbaro's injury and the long, ultimately futile struggle to save his life.
"It was a national saga, a soap opera for nine months, and people took an interest in the sport," said Nack, who for years chronicled racing so eloquently for Sports Illustrated.

"I think what Barbaro did was show people who know nothing about horses that there are a lot of kind people out there. It was one of the better angles of the nature of the sport."

Disney hopes that is true. Its studio division has just purchased the film rights to Nack's 1975 classic, Secretariat: The Making of a Champion, for a major motion picture release in 2008.
In fact, Nack was with Disney executives, including screen writer Mark Rich, and Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery, at both the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame induction last week and the Derby over the weekend.

"The dramatic center of the story is going to be Mrs. Chenery," said Nack. "And it should be."
A Denver housewife, then Penny Tweedy, she returned to Virginia to run Meadow Stable after her father lapsed into a coma. Her arrival coincided with the farm's Riva Ridge winning the 1972 Kentucky Derby, then the ascension of Secretariat, who became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years, the finishing feat that astounding 31-length Belmont victory.

Rich co-wrote Finding Forrester, The Rookie and Radio, among other films. Who might play Chenery? Meryl Streep's name has been mentioned, said Nack. So has Cate Blanchett, even Jodie Foster.

Nack is particularly proud of how ESPN handled the Ruffian story, and predicts Sam Shepard, who plays the trainer, Frank Whiteley, wins an Emmy.
It's more good news for a sport once starving for nuggets such as this one: Arlington Park in Chicago reported its opening last weekend boasted an increase of nearly 10,000 in attendance, thanks in part to publicity surrounding the installation of Polytrack.

For now, however, the attention shifts back to Street Sense's try for the second jewel of the crown.

"He showed what a seasoned, experienced trainer (Carl Nafzger) can do with a quality horse. And this is a very nice horse," said Nack. "Borel's ride was the most brilliant rail ride I've seen since Angel Cordero won the Derby with a horse named Cannonade in 1974. Cordero hugged the rail all the way around."

These days, for a change, racing is enjoying better news all the way around.

Thank you to all who have joined your state's calling group! These TWR groups are an integral component of Shelley A and Debra WI's daily strategy, and are based on the principle that legislators respond best to constituents.

If you have not yet joined your state group, please do so today! You will receive a daily call list via email from your group leader. It sounds scary to make the calls if you are new to it -- we have all been there -- but it is really very easy. You'll just speak to an aide, a young person who works in the legislator's office. Your group leader can give you guidance, if you have not done the calls before.

The impact of your calls will be maximized by the fact that other TWR constituents of your state will be making calls on the same day. This is a method developed here on TWR from a suggestion by our own Cathy Potter. After honing the strategy here, we arrived at the present constituent-based calling system, which has been extremely effective and successful.

So please join in! Join for the horses.

ANNA IN TX ... I KNEW I WAS FORGETTING SOMETHING IN MY PREVIOUS POST ....

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR MAGNIFICENT ARTWORK OF DR. RICHARDSON AND BARBARO that was presented to Dr. Richardson at last night's lecture! If only I could have been there personally to thank him for all he has done for equine medicine and, of course, for our beloved Barbaro. Your picture "does" speak volumes about the love, friendship and trust that existed between Dr R and "B" ... "being in the presence of greatness" definitely applies to BOTH!! Thank you so much again, Anna!!

    #################

Here's something I found on the discussion boards in the forum regarding the foxhound painting with the names:

"Thanks to those who posted pics of and provided links to the foxhound paintings. I really liked the names and here are the rest of them (after Barbaro and Nicanor, of course):

Calypso, Sabro, Verone, Arcano, Sereno, Lentenor, Morico, Metamort, Linda, and Rusteau.

    Classy, all of them.

    AND THIS ...

    Hey Slew,

I compiled the names from some of the paintings the artist Pirodon did.
And for whoever was looking for them, here they are:

    http://wwwcano.lagravure.com/nouveautes_novembre_05.htm

Our boy's namesake is first on the left. A sensitive, regal-looking hound, if I do say so. (Or maybe I'm just biased:-)

Dont worry about letting the "Hound out the Bag" so to speak. If anyone is to blame for posting that pic it is me. I first posted it last fall when we were all aniticipating Nicanors name. I just could not rest until I found this painting and I was pretty sure I had the correct one. I had posted the web page link in the forum and everyone seemed to have good natured fun with the speculation.

The next name is Lentenor however no one says that the Jacksons will go in a straight line across...maybe they will pull a fast one on us. I understand that all the public attention that Barbaro brought to them may have taken some of the charm and fun out of the name game for them. But given all the good that has come from the tragedy, I dont think they mind too much.

( secretly however, I have been referring to the new colt as "Little Lenty" shhh dont tell! LOL )

Re: your note to me - watt cha talkin bout??? The only thing up and running was me (of all the RIDICULOUS sites to see!!!) when one of our kids at the day care got her arm stuck between a fence post and the cinder block wall of the building. Luckily I remembered seeing a fireman get a dog's head out from between the wrought iron railings on someone's porch once ... dishwashing detergent is the answer!!! We got her unstuck, and I did not have a heart attack due to the not oft used running ability...

    To ALL
For those who don't know the nurse mare story, go to the website for Last Chance Corral. This story is a heartbreaker, but something that we ALL should know about. There is a picture (or was, anyway) that shows someone kissing the squishiest little foal face.... Go see when you get a chance.

I haven't even told them yet, but my next batch of "for FREE" necklaces will be offered to them... I am behind in making them because I got a satin cord that I am not happy with (tried to save $$$ !!!), so I ordered the stuff I normally use and need to "re-do" necklaces and finish up the batch. There are soooooo many worthy organizations out there, but that squishy face got right into my heart.

Love you Barbaro - Thanks for who I have become (and am still trying to become) because of YOU.

OK you guys - y'all are definitely in the wrong line of business! You should be detectives! LOL

I think a nice name for a little filly would be Marakesh (there seems to be an enormous variation of spellings, sort of exotic), that is a city in Morocco - the name means "red city" since the French used to call that city "La Ville Rouge" because of its red fortified ramparts. (I don't know if they are really red or they just seem red with the sun shining on them).

I love reading the names of horses - the one I particularly liked was Imawildandcrazyguy (I think that's spelled right). If I'd had money to burn I'd have bet on him. LOL

    *** Judy in Ct..
I'm glad baby loosa is a little better. I couldn't sleep last night, kept seeing the little guy in my mind. There is a nursemare farm about 5 miles from my house. They provide mares for one of the largest farms in the area. A couple years ago I stopped by, I had seen a baby in the field that was a precious blue-eyed paint, my weakness.
The woman was very nice and she took me thru her barn and showed me stall after stall of babies with no mommies. They were being taught to eat and drink their"formula" from buckets. They were so small and pitiful, they looked no bigger than my yellow lab only on stilts. She had them at least two to a stall so they had company and they did keep them clean and fed,but I worried about not having mommies there to teach them the ropes.

Just another dirty secret in the horse industry..What happens to all those babies??

I pray for your little one. Please tell us the name as soon as you know..

Thanks that is interesting. If I read it right two of the horses are/were MALE.

So does that mean that the Jacksons cannot use the name.

Regarding my recurring posts of a National Calling List - Debra called me to make sure I am not deflecting you from the official strategy, and after our conversation, I preface the lists I will be posting with this:

OFFICIAL NATIONAL STRATEGY - NOTE - FOLLOW WHAT SHELLY A & DEBRA POST FIRST - do this list also only if you have more time. Just talked with Debra; BE SURE not to do what I am asking until AFTER you do what they (and your State groups) call for daily.

With that caveat in mind, here is repost of today's National Calling List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter, and some suggestions re talking points (if you get a chance to talk). I have found many receptive aides.

    UPDATE THURSDAY MAY 10

PLEASE CONTACT Sen. OBAMA AGAIN - ask him to cosponsor S 311 (this, per request from Stephanie Breaux who is assisting the State Calling Groups).

    -Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)

    Fax #: 202-228-4260 Phone #: 202-224-2854

NATIONAL CALLING LIST for THURSDAY May 10 from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter Please note that these are REPS, so we are talking about HR 503.

And remind everybody you talk to, that the Rescues being 501(c)(3) NFP corporations, are forbidden by federal law from lobbying - the places and shelters are there. WE WILL ABSORB ALL THE HORSES who can be kept acceptably comfortable and give the rest a peaceful death. Just some ideas; what I harp on.

DAILY NATIONAL LIST: MAY 10, 2007 - re HR 503

    FLORIDA (4th part)

    -Representative Kendrick B. Meek

    Fax #: 202-226-0777 Phone #: 202-225-4506

    -Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz

    Fax #: 202-226-2052 Phone #: 202-225-7931

    -Representative Alcee L. Hastings

    Fax #: 202-225-1171 Phone #: 202-225-1313

    -Representative Tom Feeney

    Fax #: 202-226-6299 Phone #: 202-225-2706

    -Representative Mario Diaz-Balart

    Fax #: 202-226-0346 Phone #: 202-225-2778

Tell aides you talk to that you are IN FAVOR OF HR 503. If not from their State, ask them to please take your input because IT IS A NATIONAL ISSUE. Remind that the House Bill that passed, HR 249, only protects WILD horses; we still need HR 503.

Ask them to cosponsor HR 503 NOW. Remind them that the Senate counterpart S 311 came out of Commerce Committee WITHOUT AMENDMENTS last week.

Stress that the WILL OF THE PEOPLE is shown by the fact that IL HB 1711 passed the Illinois House recently and PASSED UNANIMOUSLY out of an Illinois Senate Committee this week. But even though Illinois seems soon to shut down Cavel with the impending State slaughter ban, the FEDERAL law is needed to CLOSE THE BORDERS to keep the horses from going to CN and MX - and to keep the TX slaughterhouses closed.

So please PER THE OFFICIAL NATIONAL STRATEGY call any of your OWN Senators and Reps who are not yet cosponsors. Again and again and again.

And keep calling Illinois [State] Senators to support HB 1711 per current instructions elsewhere. It's out of committee, but still has to be voted on by the Illinois Senate.

SUGGESTION - any of the legislators you fax, please include a copy of the Letter from Owners of KD Winners (from ongoing media blitz) with your fax.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK - WE ARE SO CLOSE

I will continue to post the daily lists here as soon as I get my daily email digest from Humanity against Horse Slaughter. The latest list will always be in this post 1 of this thread via daily edits.

(Being unable to contribute $, I'm one of those FOBs who's always looking for non-material ways to contribute to our worthy cause(s). IMO, this is one of those ways.)

REMEMBER DO WHAT SHELLEY A & DEBRA RECOMMEND FIRST, then if you have time, bother these guys too! You never know when you may hit a receptive chord . . .

    #####Linda Lee

I didn't even look to see that several were "male" ... now THAT'S interesting!

Anyway, to answer your question about whether or not the Jacksons could use "Linda" or "Linda Lee" for that matter, I don't know for 'certain', but since there are so many other horses that were named "Linda" over the years, I doubt there would be a problem if they wanted to name any of theirs "Linda" also. But if someone else 'here' is more knowledgeable than I am (which is probably "everyone" here), then please clarify and enlighten how this "name" process really works.

To confuse the matter even more, Linda Lee, I do know that 5 names were submitted by Penny Chenery before the 6th name, "Secretariat", was accepted. I don't know 'why' the first 5 names were declined, but they were and finally they were permitted to name their big red chestnut beauty, "Secretariat." I guess it was the absolute right choice in the end!!!!!

    ### I'm afraid to even ask this question, knowing the answer is going to be BAD (ignorance is bliss) but I've seen references to "Mexican Rodeos" in the post about the current group of horses we WILL be saving and often in Joe's blog at TBFriends. What exactly goes on at these "rodeos"? I'm thinkin' they're not like the NFR! If the info is really disturbing, don't bother to answer, but point me to a website if one is available. I don't want to give anyone nightmares!

I am thinking about Mother's Day. I lost my mom to Ovarian cancer 8 1/2 years ago. I try to honor her memory on Mother's Day. This year, I decided I would donate to TBFriends in her name. If she was here today she'd be proud of the work we do to save our horses and totally supportive.

Here is Joe's post for today, poignant as ever.

Thursday, May 10th... Sarah McDowell phones from Utah last night and says look for her on TV. She is at the playoff game, sitting about a million rows above the basket. Sarah tells me I should be there. The crowd is incredible, and her ears hurt from all the noise.

I was at least 15 acres away from the nearest television. In the north field with dozens of horses, and I tell Sarah she should be here. The San Francisco breeze cooled us off, and the sunset was a postcard. Horses looking for that last bite of grain, and the old man Limo somehow knows about the peppermint in my pocket. Flies were calling it a day. Marvin Gaye returned to us from foster care, and he looks like he could easily win the third race at Golden Gate. Nicholas was once skinny and sad, but now he is healthy and happy and his wife Shellac likes to boss him around. The old mare Bunny pees when she eats, and when Red River Valley eats he moans. Bass recently arrived from an auction, and he has yet to make a friend. So Bass follows me around the field, hoping for one more pat on the back. A small chunk of flesh is missing from the neck of Bambi, no doubt a quarrel with other fillies who are in heat. 103 horses on our ranch, and all seems to be well. Love Songs By Request on the barn radio, and Pinkie likes to poop in his water. Two points. A shower and dinner, and Jordin gets to stay on American Idol. We could not see Sarah behind the basket. But Rachel Ray gives us tips on restaurants we will never visit. Cities we can only imagine, far away from our 103 horses. In Woodland, having our weekly chocolate shake with horrible french fries, and the girl asks why not save every horse who needs saving? Why just thoroughbreds? Um, because we only have 30 acres and usually 30 cents in checking. For someone so young, the world is her stage. She has yet to learn about boundaries. Thoroughbreds bring it all to the table. There are no secrets. Race horses have arrived with their teeth missing, bloody gums, broken legs, ruptured tendons. They never shy from telling you the truth. To own a thoroughbred means you own the purest form of honesty. You may not like what they sometimes say. But once a thoroughbred loves you, there is no escape. He will love you for the rest of his life.

I think about Roger Thomas, and at the boarding stable where I once worked Roger showed up one day to say hi. He had not seen Sadie in more than two years. Roger kept Sadie at his house, but then he moved to an apartment, so he gave Sadie away. At the boarding stable Sadie heard his voice and came running. A happy scream of pleasure, even after more than two years. Roger said they were always close. He gave Sadie a carrot and a quick hug and then he was gone. I felt so bad for Sadie. She loved Roger like crazy, but he could no longer share his time. Often I am told how thoroughbreds are stupid, and they remember little. Believe me on this, thoroughbreds are not stupid. They remember all. Thoroughbreds choose carefully what they will share with you. Their silence is mistaken for stupidity. But they are only protecting themselves from generations of mishandling.

Living with over 100 thoroughbreds, and my wife Cathy and I are amazingly blessed. We have made mistakes. Trusted the wrong people. Hoped for a better outcome. And through it all, having horses means never having a bad day. Just like the young girl over a chocolate shake. Having horses means the world is your stage. You learn how everything is possible...

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

    Nancy and Dawn
I went to a "real" rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming - One of the biggest in the U.S., as far as I know. And highly respected in the rodeo circles.

In between the "regular" events they had the "fun" events....

It was absolutely barbaric. Taking mares from their foals just to see the paniced babies trying desperately to find their mommies.... it was called a "race" to see which foal found her mare first. It was disgusting.

Then they brought in "wild" horses and "teams" of supposed cowboys had to rope one, then with the rope around it's neck, someone had to get on the horse and stay on for a minimum number of seconds. Those poor horses were terrified and the crowd around me was hootin and hollerin and having a GREAT time.... I was with a friend who came on the trip mainly to go to this rodeo, so I could not leave. But I spent more time OUT of the arena seating area than in it.

    Never again.

Sorry if I have offended some rodeo fans, but what I saw that day was horrible and cruel...

    ### Glenda--You're correct. Cheyenne Frontier Days is one of the premier events in rodeo. I used to barrel race in high school rodeo, etc., but I have REALLY mixed feelings about the whole "sport" of rodeo, and those so-called "fun" events are ridiculous. Of course, now I work for a veterinary distributor and have major issues with many areas of the livestock industry--a life of conflict!

$230,000 Raised for Barbaro Fund through Derby Day
    Date Posted: May 10, 2007
    Last Updated: May 10, 2007

Through Saturday, May 5, more than $230,000 had been raised in support of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Charities – Barbaro Memorial Fund, the NTRA announced May 10. Most of the money has come from the sales of blue “Riding With Barbaro” wristbands, available at racetracks around the country and online at www.ridingwithbarbaro.org. Only 30,000 wristbands remain from an initial order of 100,000 placed by the NTRA.

The Barbaro Memorial Fund was created to raise awareness and money for equine health and safety research in the name of Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Barbaro, winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), whose gallant struggle to overcome a catastrophic injury captivated horse enthusiasts around the world. Monies raised by the Barbaro Memorial Fund will support equine research projects, including those that focus on laminitis, the painful and often fatal hoof disease that plagued Barbaro for so much of his recuperative period following his injury in the 2006 Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

In addition to wristband sales, key contributions and support have come from the Triple Crown racetracks (Churchill Downs, Pimlico Racecourse and Belmont Park) and NTRA-member racetracks throughout North America. Other contributors include NTRA Purchasing Partners Dodge, Hallway Feeds, John Deere, Sherwin Williams, Office Max, and UPS; as well as The Blood-Horse, HRTV and TVG. Jockey Calvin Borel and trainer Todd Pletcher have also made cash pledges to the Fund based on their winning performances in the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), respectively.

“We are deeply grateful to all of the Barbaro Memorial Fund contributors for stepping up to support this important initiative for equine health and safety,” said NTRA President and CEO Alex Waldrop. “This is a wonderful salute to Barbaro.”

In all, 35 North American racetracks/organizations are participating in activities benefiting the NTRA Charities – Barbaro Memorial Fund. A TALE OF THE BEST BUDDIES....

Q: What is your fondest memory of Barbaro?

Richardson: Walking with him outside in the sunshine and hearing him munch grass when there was no one else around except the cattle and horses in adjoining fields.

I find such comfort in this simple answer...comfort that Barbaro had not only a skilled surgeon, but also a loving friend!
    ######################

I am not at all surprised at this answer from Dr. Richardson ... If I was him, it would be my fondest memory also ... that was the 'sweetest' time between him and Barbaro ... when it looked like "Bobby" was on his way to a slow but full recovery. My heart still aches for Dr. Richardson .... he is one of the greatest 'people' I have ever had the good fortune of "meeting" ... I will remember him forever.

    Sarah,
At last night's presentation, Dr. R was asked who he thought should play him when they make the movie. He wouldn't give a "real" answer, just a joke to the effect that he knew he must have been looking old and tired in some of his interviews last year when he heard Clint Eastwood mentioned to play him! I laughed then, and got a biggr laugh today when he just posted that Eastwood quote!

    AFTERNOON REPOST

What an incredibly knowledgeable man Dr. Richardson is ... and so 'down to earth' also ... I loved reading his reference to himself as a "pointy-headed academician" ...
    ##############

The one thing I wonder is this, though:

If the Jacksons, by their own admission, claimed that there were no barn/paddock/stable nicknames for Barbaro, and now Dr. R confirms that only his proper name was ever used, then "where" did "Bobby" originate and emanate from? Does anyone know?

Posted by: Linnie at May 10, 2007 8:05 PM

    Linnie,
I thought "Bobby" was his barn name to. I rememeber Dr.Richardson in the past saying he called him by his real name not "Bobby". Good Question. I know greyhounds are not called my their names on the track...its either pooch or pup.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at May 10, 2007 8:11 PM

linnie -- i think it's out of respect that he was referred to as barbaro. that's just my opinion, but from spending alot of time at tbred racing layup facilities and ranches, they just refer to the horse by their jockey club-given name.

I thought the name Bobby came from Peter Brette's son. He was too young to pronounce Barbaro correctly.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at May 10, 2007 8:18 PM

    Linnie and Renee,

I seem to remember hearing somewhere along the way that Bobby came from a young child in the Barbaro circle (maybe Michael Matz's son??), who had difficulty pronouncing Barbaro.

Going back to Update 532, Dr. R's thank you for his FOB sponsored birthday party, he said then that "I am very grateful that there is so much concern out there for Barbaro (sorry, I cannot bring myself to call him Bobby......" I guess maybe he meant that calling Barbaro "Bobby" would be like calling the Queen "Liz"?? LOL

Posted by: Lissa in PA at May 10, 2007 8:18 PM

    ####Renee and Barbara Kerr ...

Thank you both, and yes, I do understand the "respect" factor ...

I guess my question is: How did the name "Bobby" surface in the first place? How did we all find out about it? We just didn't start calling him that ourselves, I don't think. But, at some point, it was mentioned that his barn "nickname" was "Bobby". Yet, M/M Jackson said recently that he didn't have a nickname, he was always "Barbaro."

This is where I am confused ...

Posted by: Lissa in PA at May 10, 2007 8:22 PM

    Good afternoon fellow FsOB:
I recently had meetings with the agriculture aides of Senator Amy Klobuchar (Mn) and Senator Norm Coleman (Mn). I gained valuable insight in which I need to share with everyone, but here is one that must be addressed now.
One of the aides said the price a farmer/rancher can get for a horse has substantially decreased since the two federal rulings shut down the slaughterhouses. He wanted to know my response to that. He cited the American Farm Bureau Federation is informing congress that the price of horses is decreasing and they are saying that as a result we could have a substantial amount of unwanted, abused and neglected horses.
Here's part of what's being distributed through D.C.

"The absence of the slaughter option is taking away a source of revenue and is driving down prices. In the past, a horse sold for meat was
worth $800 to $1,200, according to industry insiders. Steve Kouplen, president of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, says his figures show the ban would cost horse owners $350-400 per animal in salvage value."

Here's how I responded to the question:
"There are many components that make up the
economic climate of ANY industry. To blame one
factor for a decrease/decline of any part of
that industry is irresponsible. One must look
at the entire landscape of the industry and
compute all factors, not just one. Determining
the reason for a downturn also lies within the
application of the correct formula for
finding the cause of the negative economic
    impact.
In this case, gas prices are up, therefore
transportation expenses have risen. And the
cost of hay has been very high for an extended
period of time. Both of these two factors play
into the decline of the value of the horses.
Farmers/ranchers view horses as part of their
business. Viewed in this manner, the machinery
the farmer/rancher purchased for, say, $50,000,
will not be worth $50,000 one year from now. So
the farmer/rancher needs to accept the fact that
business climates change all the time, and they
have to change with it. To stay in business,
any business, you have to change the way you
think. So if slaughter is not an option for
your "business investment," look for other
means of disposal. The American Hippotherapy
Association, in many cases, will purchase
horses. One example that other avenues exist to
not only dispose of the animal, but still make
    a few dollars as well.
Blaming one factor, the absence of slaughter,
on a decrease in value for your "property" is
    ridiculous."

This must be addressed when making the calls. The American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Farmers Union of America and other groups are distorting the facts they present to congress. This is one example.
Senator klobuchar is against the bill and two weeks ago voted "no" in committee. I will post some very useful information I gained from my meeting with the top aide tomorrow.
Senator Coleman's aide said the senator is "inclined" to vote "yes," but is worried about the "slippery slope" and is currently working with other senators on wording that would prohibit "the slippery slope."
But, for now, the decline in the value of the farmers/ranchers horses is not because the slaughter industry has been shut down. Congress needs to know this.

She said no one seemed to know why or how people started calling him Bobby. I told her we (the board) thought (and I said Matz because that is what I had heard) Michael Matz's son couldn't pronounce Barbaro, and so he called him Bobby. She said she didn't think that was true -at least she hadn't ever heard that, and they all wondering (including the Jacksons) why we were calling him Bobby! Funny huh? Just my opinion, but knowing what I know now, I don't think Barbaro would have particularly liked being called Bobby anyway.

    Barbaro vs. "Bobby" ...

I am definitely guilty of calling Barbaro "Bobby" a lot ... in fact, I remember when I first either read or heard that his nickname was "Bobby", it kind of endeared me to him even more because he took on a more 'personal' connection to me. And then when some of us started referring to ourselves as "Bobby's Girl" and were posting the lyrics to the song here, we felt even more connected.

Anyway, I guess whatever "worked" for each of us is what matters most ... however we felt more personally 'in touch' with him is how we related to him, and if the end result was an outpouring of love between "us" and "him", then the 'name' we used is inconsequential.

Personally, I don't think that Barbaro would have cared one way or another what we called him ... I think he loved "Bobby" as much as his "official" name of Barbaro, especially if he was called that out of love, and if one of the "children" called him "Bobby" because they couldn't pronounce "Barbaro", then I am convinced that he loved "Bobby" just as much, if not more, because of the pure love and innocence of children.

And ... remember this famous poetic line from centuries ago ... I think it was Gertrude Stein:

"A rose by any other name still smells as sweet"

... EVEN if Barbaro didn't appreciate the smell of those "steenkin' roses" up close and personal. I'm sure he was very very happy to have won the "Run for the Derby Roses" last year and had to "endure" the blanket of "steenkin' roses" for just a minute or two. Besides, one of my favorite pictures that is framed and on my desk is the one of "Bobby" smelling those roses, so just for a moment, Barbaro did take time to "stop and smell the roses."

For some reason I can remember this like it was yesterday.

It was Peter Brette's son that we were told could not pronounce Barbaro because he was only 2yrs old at the time but he could say Bobby.

I always found that so heartwarming so I do hope it was true.

funny how the slaughter spokespersons still refer to slaughter as 'euthanasia', when it is nothing of the sort.

    eu·tha·na·sia (yū'thə-nā'zhə, -zhē-ə) pronunciation

The act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment.

And dont forget!! We also have Bobbys lil Angel and Bobby's Girl and the soon to be born Bobby's Spirit at Miracle Horse Rescue. These are special and meaningful names to the Fans of Barbaro.

Push for an appointment with the agriculture aide or the person who is on S. 311. You have the right to meet with them. The aide I met with in Minneapolis was originally against S. 311. He told me during our meeting that he was now "conflicted" due to the positive response and positive information sent to him by FsOB. When I left the meeting, he was really leaning towards us.
Meeting one on one, you know they get the info. You also have the opportunity to display your passion. You now have the chance to "sell them." Find their weakness. Everyone has at least one. Senator Klobuchar is a prosecutor from Minneapolis. So I keyed in on the laws being broken by killer buyers, the fines levied against Cavel and Dallas Crown, the fact Dallas Crown was ordered shut down last June by a judge who ruled they were a public health hazard, but they appealed and never paid a dime on the fines. And the fact these plants are foreign owned and that this constant flow of pollution shows a blatant lack of respect for OUR laws. That was a hot button and he said he would make sure the senator got that info.
Brick walls and sound proof rooms are not invincible. Determination and passion can break both. Go get that meeting, dazzle them with irrefutable facts, show them you are serious. They are not used to people like us: people who will not go away!

    Hi Leslie in MN ...

I had forgotten all about these little babies that are all part of Barbaro's legacy ... they were all named "Bobby's ....." so, yes, yes, yes, thank you for that very important reminder.

Besides, I doubt that Barbaro's ego was that 'fragile' that he couldn't accept being called "Bobby", especially if it was meant with only the greatest of respect and love, and I know that it was for every single person or child who called him that.

Thank you, Leslie!!! Now I feel even better!! LOL

Posted by: Linnie at May 10, 2007 10:18 PM

When I had the opportunity last weekend at to speak in a conversation with JennyPR and Eduardo, Jenny explained to me that in her and Eduardo's native language and culture when you say the name Barbaro it is like saying "He is the Best" The top chef would be called "A Barbaro of Chefs"...the top soccer player would be "the Barbaro of players."

So of course now I have even a better idea in my head for the name Barbaro due to this explaination. He was the Barbaro of all time and the Barbaro of our hearts as well.

But to Peter Brette's young son he was a Horsey named Bobby. He touched everyone in a different way.

For me he will always be the Great and Mighty Barbaro and the Sweet and Innocent Bobby all rolled into one magnificent being.

And that is why we loved him so.

Very interesting, Leslie, and I'm glad that you had the opportunity to speak with Eduardo at DelPark.

Yes, Barbaro does mean conqueror, victor, mighty and "Bobby" means lovable, approachable, soft, tender ...

I guess it's all in how we want to interpret our own relationship to him ... for me, personally, I preferred to sense and feel the sweet young colt's softness and tenderness, vulnerability and love most of the time, especially following his accident and laminitis onset, but when speaking of his prowess and accomplishments in horseracing and on the racetracks, it would undoubtedly be "Barbaro" ... "all Barbaro in a sublime performance!"

Yes, he was definitely both ... and that's what made me so special for all of us.

AQHA Director Testifies Before Agriculture Subcommittee
    by: Press Release
    May 10 2007 Article # 9558

The American Quarter Horse Association testified Tuesday, May 8, before the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry on the welfare of animals in agriculture.

The Subcommittee heard testimony from various representatives from animal health groups, the animal agriculture industry, and animal welfare organizations about the status of animal welfare in American agriculture. AQHA was the only equine group to testify before the Subcommittee.

"The Committee gained insight not only on the issues facing animal welfare but also the solutions the industry is working through to ensure that we have a safe, plentiful and affordable food supply," Congressman Leonard Boswell said in a press release. "It's evident that livestock producers are vigorously addressing animal welfare issues."

AQHA Director Leslie Lange was selected to represent the Association. Her testimony, which included submitting a copy of AQHA's Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations that addresses the Association's commitment to animal welfare, focused on the unwanted horse and ways the industry is trying to deal with the issue. Lange, from Colorado, appeared with beef, dairy, poultry and pork producers, veterinarians, the Humane Society of the United States, and a representative from Farm Sanctuary.

    ### Daryl--If you're still here. . .the legal angle is a great one. Just one additional thing that might be helpful when talking legalities, particularly with the HUGE immigration issue--What is the likelihood that the majority of those workers at the slaughter plants are illegal? Here in the midwest, a large portion of workers in cattle plants certainly are, and I would think due to the disgusting nature of the horse slaughter plants, illegal workers might be even higher. I have never found if/when this issue has ever been investigated, but it SHOULD BE!

Posted by: Dawn in Omaha at May 11, 2007 12:00 AM

Response from Rep. Ed Markey on Horse slaughter:

    Dear Faye:

Thank you for contacting me about horse slaughter. It was good to hear
    from you.

Roughly 90,000 horses are sent to slaughter in the United States each
year. There are currently three foreign-owned slaughter houses
operating in the U.S. that provide horse meat for consumption abroad.
    On February 1, 2005, Representative John E. Sweeney (R-NY)
reintroduced H.R. 503. This bill sought to prevent the slaughter of
horses in the United States for the purpose of human consumption. I
joined as a cosponsor of H.R. 503, because like you, I believe that
horses should be protected and treated humanely.

Congress has previously acted to stop the slaughter of horses in the
United States. On June 8, 2005, Representative Sweeney offered an
amendment to the Department of Agriculture appropriations bill that
would have prevented funds from being used to inspect horses for food,
thereby effectively ending the practice. I voted in favor of the
amendment, and it passed the House of Representatives by a vote of
269-158. Similar language passed the Senate, however, the USDA
interpreted the amendment's language in such a way as to allow horse
slaughter to continue, thwarting the will of Congress and the intent of
    the amendment.

Unfortunately, H.R. 503 did not come up for a vote in the Senate and
died in the 109th Congress. In the 110th Congress, Representative Jan
Schakowsky (D-IL) reintroduced H.R. 503, and I am pleased to report
that I am a cosponsor of this legislation, which is currently pending
before both the House Energy and Commerce and Agriculture
    Committees.

In addition, a new bill, H.R. 249 was introduced by Representative
Nick Rahall (D-WV) on January 5, 2007. This bill seeks to restore the
prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free-roaming
horses and burros. The bill would also forbid the sale of certain excess
animals or their remains. I am a cosponsor of this bill and voted for its
enactment when it was approved by the House on April 26, 2007 by a
    vote of 277-137.

Thank you again for contacting me on this issue. Please feel free to do
so about this or any other matter of concern. If you would like to sign
up to receive periodic updates of my e-newsletter, visit my website at
    http://markey.house.gov/ and click on E-mail.

    Harriette,

We just got our Internet back here at home...it was down for some reason.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. May the memories offer comfort and enable you to revisit good times that lead to smiling once again...

Also Harriette, what on Earth were you doing that caused such a fall?! Please take care of yourself and once you find a comfortable way to relax, get some rest, okay?

Take care and sweet dreams to you Harriette...

CONTRIBUTING TO CHILDREN OF THE RACETRACK, THE JACKSONS, AND EDGAR PRADO:

Anna House is the child care center for the backstretch workers at Belmont Park. It's a wonderful place, run by very caring people--they take care of the children of the people who take care of the horses. Gretchen Jackson sits on the board, and various other racing luminaries contribute in one way or another. The connections of Lemon Drop Kid donated money for a playground named in their horse's honor, and I went one day to read to the children in the Lael Stables Playroom.

For the first time, they are doing a benefit in the New York area (they have a huge benefit in Saratoga every summer), and below is the information. If you're interested in attending, please let me know or contact Anna House directly.
The three jockeys mentioned are expected to be in attendance.

In addition, an FOB is collecting money to be mailed to me to present at the benefit; the money will be donated to Anna House in the name of Edgar Prado.

More information can be found at:

Hi everyone and a big hello to my Angel Horse! I have watched the NBC special every day since Saturday. I cry everytime I watch it and my dog, McDuff, always comes over and puts his head on my lap to try and comfort me. I am so thankful that I was here on this earth the same time Bobby was, I remember reading about super horses, Exterminator, Sea Biscut, Man O War, I was around for Secratarient, but Bobby's time with us was so special. He has done so much good for horses everywhere. He really is a mircale horse. I love you so much big boy! God Bless you and keep you!
