Barbaro Updates: 292

updates are now here.

Update 1961: Gloria (IL) won the quiz (update 1960) and Horse Feathers Equine Rescue Inc. will receive $100. Gloria recently visited.

Sightseeing is no longer being considered for the Belmont: Curlin back to work; Sightseeing drops out

Update 1960: The Daily Racing Form covers Red Aspen's win yesterday. $100 to the horse welfare charity of choice of the person who can identify two errors in the article: Monmouth: Redaspen takes Politely

Street Sense galloped at Churchill this morning, a decision re: the Belmont will be made on wednesday. Curlin breezed 5/8ths at Churchill and is on schedule for the Belmont: Easy Work for Curlin at Churchill; Asmussen 'Very Pleased', excerpt:

"I was very pleased with him," said Asmussen. "I just try to be pretty rhythmic with where we're at with him. I feel that the familiarity for him with what we're doing keeps his state of mind where we want it to be -- nice and relaxed. With everything that's been asked of him over a short period of time, I want to keep everything as close to normal as I possibly can."

Update 1959: The mood at Belmont Park was sombre on saturday morning in the wake of Andrew Lakeman's accident: Breakfast at Belmont. My tire is fixed thanks to Dave, Hawty Creek's owner. Hawty is doing well on the farm. A long anticipated arrival arrived last night!

Update 1958: A somewhat muggy morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had a flat tire so had to call Tim to see if he could come and pick me up. No problem there. Red Aspen and Who's Happy looked good in the barn when I saw them this morning. My first to go was Gator Nation, he went out to the fields with Tim and Whip Smart. We jogged around the outside, chatting the whole time about yesterday's events. Tim was thrilled in the manner of Red Aspen's victory and Victor Molina's ride. He was also very enthusiastic about how Who's Happy is progressing. She is growing into a very big filly. Second out was "New Horse", she went to the dirt track to gallop a mile, jogging back to the 5/8ths first. Tim came with us but continued jogging back when I turned around and went to the gate, he was on Quick Quest. New Horse galloped very nicely. Finally I took Nautical Agent across the fields. She loved it, we spied a fox. All very tranquil. I then had to find a way home, which meant walking to the starting gate, and finding someone willing to give me a ride to the gas station (needed milk and coffee) and home. Thanks Kirsty.

A nice pre-race article on Red Aspen yesterday: Redaspen poised for Politely, excerpt:

Woolley, a native of England, moved to the United States in 1988 and obtained his trainer's license in 1995. He has a 14-horse string at Fair Hill, where he put the finishing touches on Redaspen's Politely preparations.

"She had a nice 6-furlong breeze last Saturday, and she is doing very well," he said. "I am very happy with her."

...and I know he is now _really_ happy with her.

Update 1957: Pletcher worked some of his stakes horses on Sunday, including his filly Rags to Riches. No final decision has been made with regard to the Belmont: Rags Breezes, No Final Decision Yet On Belmont. A filly that can beat the boys, Vodka: Vodka First Filly Since 1943 to Win Japanese Derby.

Update 1956: From Monmouth Park's web-site and including a photo: REDASPEN RALLIES TO TAKE POLITELY ON TURF AT MONMOUTH; JERSEY GIA OUTDUELS PURE DISCO TO WIN OPEN MIND HANDICAP, excerpt:

"She loves Jersey turf," Woolley said. "Everything went right today. In turf racing, you never know if you'll get all the breaks. We'll be back in a few weeks for the Eatontown Stakes (Grade 3 on June 16)."

Today's charts: Red Aspen and Who's Happy.

Update 1955: Who's really Happy ... Red Aspen rolled! What a day for Tim and his owners! Red Aspen, under an exceptional ride from Victor Molina, showed she was for real ... She came by and won by two lengths in the co-feature at Monmouth. Her third stakes win, first for 2007.

Update 1954: Who's Happy ? We are, with another nice win for Happy, three in a row. The pace of the race was a little slower, she was thus kept closer to the pace and won by a length. She dumped her jockey coming back after the race, but all is well. Tim has now just arrived at Monmouth to saddle Red Aspen.

Update 1953: A busy day for Tim today, he has two runners at two different tracks. Who's Happy runs first, in the seventh race at Philadelphia Park (3:07 pm). Red Aspen runs in the co-feature race later in the day at Monmouth (5:23 pm). Lets hope for good running and that Tim is able to be in attendance for both races!

Update 1952: Two 2006 Derby contenders are in the entries on monday. Sweetnorthersaint is in Texas: 'Saint Plays Favorite in Lone Star Park Handicap and Lawyer Ron contests the Met Mile, a banner race at Belmont: Met Mile perfect fit for Lawyer Ron.

Takeover Target returned to winning ways yesterday in Australia, ahead of his plan to return to the UK and defend his King Stand Stakes win of last year: Takeover Target returns to form in Doomben 10,000, excerpt:

"He's a great little horse," owner-trainer Joe Janiak said of the seven-year-old Celtic Swing gelding. "I can't tell you how I feel, I'm so excited. He galloped at Coffs Harbour [his new stables on the New South Wales northern coast] last week. The track was very heavy, but I thought he'd improved two lengths on his last start."

Update 1951: Great Hunter is out of the Belmont after his good work: Injury KO's Great Hunter From Belmont Stakes as is Mario Pino: Gomez Replaces Pino on Hard Spun for Belmont.

Andrew Lakeman apparently has no brain damage, but spinal trauma. It will be a few days before we know the extent of the trauma. He arrived at hospital with an immediate need for a blood transfusion, which he received. Ed Fountaine (New York Post) let me know, he had heard from Charlie Haywood, president of NYRA.

My day at Fair Hill races was fun (although I did not see any of the races). I hung out and chatted with FOBs and others while selling Barbaro merchandize and Robbie Walsh raffle tickets. Nonpariel ran second in the first race, I then convinced both Carl (her jockey) and Tim to buy a raffle ticket. The trainer of the winner of the race (who was also the owner) donated the purse to the cause. All in all it was a fun day hanging out, even trying to pursuade someone who was pro-slaughter that it was simply not right (but what would we do with the 500,000 horses slaughtered a year ?... I guess an example of the misinformation that is out there!)

Update 1950: Today is going to be hot, and it was a little muggy at Fair Hill this morning. I had five to ride, three for Tim, bookended by two breezers for Linda. First was Linda's Pistol, and he breezed a half a mile on the Tapeta track with Tim on Quick Quest. I was on the inside, setting the tempo. We went nicely together quickening up a little the whole way. A nice "in hand breeze". Second to go for me was Mediman, she galloped a mile and a quarter on the Tapeta track. She went nicely. Tim was on Real Lace and flew by me down the backside. My third was "New Horse", she is a nice grey filly and she also galloped a mile and a quarter on the Tapeta track. She was a very kind horse to gallop, a nice easy way about her. Finally for Tim I took Gator nation across the fields. He enjoyed it, just jogging and hacking around. My last horse breezed 3/8ths on the Tapeta track. I was instructed to go easy, about 38. I went easy ... in 40! Oh well, close enough.

Carl 'rider error' Desormeau, riding Tim's Nonpariel this afternoon, took a fall off his first set this morning. He blamed it on his tack. Lets hope this is not repeated this afternoon!

Andrew Lakeman is still with us, I understand his injuries are very serious. Positive thoughts. Tim knows him, he used to work for Michael Dickinson down here.

OK, off to Fair Hill Races, hope to see a few of you there to catch up! Thanks Jack: Injured steeplechase rider on mend. I also think Sean Clancy may be doing a book signing.

Update 1949: Andy Durnin, freelance exercise rider at Hollywood Park for Richard Mandella, told me The Tin Man was looking great in training (he does not gallop him) after an extended break. The nine year old is now back in the entries: The Tin Man seeks to make history in Shoemaker Mile.

Chelokee is unlikely to contest the Belmont Stakes: Chelokee unlikely for Belmont Stakes excerpt:

"He's been back galloping the last couple days and he looks good, but I don't think we're going to run," Matz said. "There's still a lot of racing left to go this year and I want to try and keep this horse going the right way."

A new Affirmed exhibit is to be opened at the Kentucky Horse Park on June 7: Affirmed exhibition to open at Kentucky Horse Park.

I can't tell you what a difference it will make. When I call in Ohio to Congress, I never have to say the Title of the Bill, due to the great calling efforts of the HERD®
The aides know what I'm talking about even before I say the title.

Since the new strategy of calling the out-of-state congresspersons started, I found that most aides did not know the bill by the number.

We need to change this in every state.

We need those cosponsors.

The aides IN EVERY STATE need to be aware of HR503 and S311 and what we are trying to accomplish so they can pass the calls to the representatives.

(Shelley Debra & Steph) strategy is working but it will be more effective if they get calls from constituents. THIS MEANS FROM YOUR STATE

Steph makes it fun and easy to set up. Once up and running it is like Ground Hog day, you just keep repeating the lists and share feedback.

So please step up and join a state group.

So every state is represented.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Tim & Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I can attest to the education needs re: S311 & HR503.In our first day yesterday, the Maine Mob encountered aides who were not familiar with these pieces of legislation. We need to get to them before the other side does!

##
Congratulations, Robyn, on your engagment! (Announced in last night's Comments.)

Good morning all! I wanted to mention this article I saw while reading about the jockey who fell. This horse was a graded stakes winner - winning a total of $688,580 and he dies like this. It makes me soo angry and just breaks my heart. He deserved better. The race horse industry needs a governing body or watch dog group!

Multiple graded stakes winner Inesperado (Fr) was euthanized after breaking down in a $9,675 claiming race on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

The eight-year-old Zayyani (Ire) horse was racing for a $4,000 claiming price. Ridden by jockey Carlos Silva, Inesperado was rated in sixth and broke down shortly after the half-mile pole before being vanned off.

Prayers for Andrew Lakeman. Alex thanks for the link on the the new Affirmed Exhibit. KY Horsepark has some excellent exhibits and I undertand that John Henry's trophies should be arriving soon from his owner's estate.

Good morning everyone, and a rousing THANK YOU!!! to Alex and Tim. Someone wrote the other day that Tim, you are "in the background," but to me you are first and foremost in our hearts.

Alex, you know how we feel about you.

Thanks again.

###
Quote from the link about The Tin Man:

[the trainer] said there is a good reason why The Tin Man was given an extended break from racing following a 2006 campaign that also included a runner-up finish in the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1) at Nad al Sheba racecourse.

“He was tired, period...”

Forgive me here, but perhaps the horse is telling you something??

In my view (and I am NOT an expert here), just as there needs to be some consideration of the age that colts and fillies begin racing, so should there be some thought to how LONG the horse races.

Just a thought.

Cross post from the DB: Cavel hasn't given up, this is sickening:

Owner of DeKalb horse slaughterhouse sues over state ban

Published May 26, 2007

Cavel International Inc., a Belgium-based company that operates a horse
slaughterhouse in DeKalb, filed suit Friday in federal court seeking to
nullify a state law that closed down the plant.

The law, signed Thursday by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, prohibits the import,
export, possession and slaughter of horses intended for human consumption.

Cavel's suit argues the law is an unconstitutional exercise of the
state's police power because it does not protect any legitimate health
or safety interest.

The suit seeks a temporary restraining order that would allow the plant
to continue operating while the suit is being litigated.

Any lawyer types in Illinois:

If Cavel is claiming the law in Illinois doesn't address legitimate health interest, can't that be countered with the fines they haven't paid! for their discharges into the water etc? I do believe that is a "legitimate health and safety" concern.

Let's keep this hell-hole shut so we can turn it into Barbaro Park and B&B!

Good morning-

TO EVERYONE WORKING ON ANTI SLAUGHTER...

Please stay focused on our calling instructions!
We need 60 senate co-sponsors (33 more) to get S311 to a vote. This is by far the most direct path to our goal of permanently ending horse slaughter in the U.S.

Getting senate co-sponsors should be our top priority at the moment.

Thanks to you all and please join your state group!

This news of the lawsuit is not surprising, and I think the state of Illinois should do okay on this one.

It is relatively easy for a state to show that it has a legitimate health, safety, or WELFARE interest (note that Cavel appears to have conveniently omitted the term "welfare") in promulgating regulations that exercise its inherent police power. Avoiding animal cruelty is generally considered to be a legitimate public policy, and a legitimate state interest -- this is why a state is permitted to tell a dog owner (or, for that matter, a horse owner) that he can't torture his animal. I think that this principal would extend to a state's ability to determine that horses cannot be slaughtered for food, in a state where horsemeat is not even eaten.

Hopefully the judge will deny the TRO...But that is out of our control.

What we do have control over is the political process that will (we hope) lead to a permanent federal ban of horse slaughter for human consumption. Let's stay focused on getting more co-sponsors, which is the task that we have been assigned by the people who are coordinating the anti-slaughter strategy at the national level. We can be VERY helpful to the strategists if we stick to this plan.

JOIN A STATE GROUP

Proslaughter will continue to circumvent the state laws, will continue to try to operate in other sates, will continue to transport horses to Mexico and Canada

Until a National Ban is passed. To do this:

WE NEED CALLING GROUPS IN EVERY SATE

When we first started calling aides in OHIO I would ask them to support HR503 or S311, most of the time they asked what the bill was about. Since our calling group started after the 2nd week or so, I no longer have to say the bill’s name, just the number. The aides now know our message. And what a wonderful felling when I hear, “I have had several calls today about that” I say really (LOL).

Since the new strategy of calling the out-of-state congresspersons started, I found that most aides did not know the bill by the number. This must mean that they are not hearing from anti slaughter groups enough.

We need to change this in every state.

We need those cosponsors.

The aides IN EVERY STATE need to be aware of HR503 and S311 and what we are trying to accomplish so they can pass the anti slaughter message to the representatives.

(Shelley Debra & Steph) strategy is working but it will be more effective if they get calls from constituents.

Steph makes it so easy.
Not political, it is just a simple call stating to support the end of horse slaughter.

ANTI-SLAUGHTER SUGGESTIONS

Please allow me to make this suggestion:

When possible this weekend, please go down the Senators list from A-Z and leave messages on their voice mail asking them to please co-sponsor S. 311. Voice mail does not ask any questions and will make it easy for us to leave messages.

Starting Tuesday morning, please help by flooding the Senators' phone lines, that list will be posted by Shelley and Debra. As a group we can accomplish this fight for the horses. This cannot be done on individual basis as was shown by Thursday.

###Cal Not my state. Washington does. I just wondered cause I am so sick of all of this that I want to jump on the boat and put my 2 cents in here.

My husband has finally decided to get involved as well. He is a an attorney and so he may be able to get somewhere with all of this. He is really familiar with rebuttle (which is what I see happening to Illinois?). He has been lurking this site for a long time and he decided to get involved a little bit.

He is trying to keep me in check LOL. I lose it when these horses get hurt or put down as you well know.

I will call my dad today. He loves horses too, we had them all our lives. Race horses, Arabians and some ponies. My dad always always made sure that the horses always got the best of care when they were ill.

Thanks.....

Glad to hear you are ready to jump in. Of course we are looking for all people to join. The best grassroot efforts are those from a diverse group.

I have several callers who are not FOB and are not part of the OHIO Group per say, they are other horse people who I just e-mail the list and they call when they can....and I know others who are a part of the OHIO group and belong to other anti slaughter groups. So anyone can join.

Ask your dad if he decides to join to put "JOIN OH GROUP" in the the subject. Also, coworkers can be very good people to ask to join. We really need every caller we can get.

Everybody, please read Nancy Lewis' post at 4:31 pm and make the calls. You can record and not have to talk, which is nice for a change. Please call and email and fill up their boxes.

Try to do it soon because they could fill up over the long weekend with other issues and we want to make sure ours gets in there. Please and thanks.
Wishing everybody a great weekend.

I'm an old timer and haven't "met" most of you yet, but I read and admire your posts and your work for horses. I like your passion and determination. I just like yall! !

Posted by: Bobbie B. at May 26, 2007 4:59 PM

Good morning, all -

With any luck, I'll push "send" before it's noon on the East coast!

I sincerely hope for the best possible outcome for Mr. Lakeman. Being a horse person, as well as being a horse, seems to carry with it a great deal of danger. Best and most healing thoughts for all involved.

### Laurie H - Every good thing to you and to Bart. Hope it's not TOO traumatic. I had to laugh about the pillow case, since that was the only system I could use on several of my recalcitrant, semi-feral cat adoptions over the years! It's dreadful, but to see a thouroughly disgruntled cat head, with that malevolent, slit-eyed look, peering out of the top of a pillow case is - well - FUNNY!

jonna - I believe I read on the DB thread, at some point, that Angela was taking the weekend off, and getting away. I, like you, cannot imagine what she and Dawn went through. I was sick, and that was without seeing the horses. My niece, whom I had alerted to the situation, went by the plant the other day, and said it was surreal - like a scene from a horror movie. Noise, stench - awful. And to have seen the beasties, and be denied - well. There are no words. Anyhow, I hope she is finding some well-deserved rest, and peace.

To all running and riding today, safe trips, and wings on their heels. And a good thought for that gallant old warrior, Inesperado. :(

### - Harriette, you really could have left out the brownies yesterday morning. I have this unbelievable CRAVING now for brownies, and since my admiration for horses does NOT, at least in the theoretical, extend to wishing to emulate their dimensions in the hip, I have an axe to grind with you, girlfriend! If I am to be of any use at the B&B, I need to remain ambulatory. If I start my days thinking of brownies, they'll have to being a new fund for human laminitis, since my feet will fold under their burden!

Be well, all. Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

Love - Jean

HAPPY MEMORIAL WEEKEND TO ONE AND ALL ...

I hope "Yours" is safe, healthy, happy, enjoyable and FUN!!! Do what you love and love what you do!!!

IT'S JUST 3 DAYS until the 29th of the month, and our $29 on the 29th Campaign is doing so very very well, and I thank all of you so very very much for all that have done, are doing and will continue to do.

This is far from over, but we are getting there ... every dollar counts more than we can imagine.

Again I want to thank everyone who participated in honoring and remembering Barbaro on Preakness Day with their $6.00 or more donations ... I'm sure you were more than generous, and I thank you so much. And, I also want to congratulate again everyone who participated in the various Barbaro Birthday Celebrations last April 29th!! I can't believe it's almost one full month since we were all celebrating Barbaro's 4th Birthday and "Licking Laminitis" with our contributions.

For May's $29 on the 29th 'drive', I thought I'd offer another Triple Crown Challenge for those who can do it ... $29 for Barbaro's Derby Win in the month of May; $29 in honor of the greatest trainer in the world - Michael Matz; and $29 in memory of Mending Fences who lost his young life just one week ago today on the undercard of The Preakness Race.

So, whatever you can afford, please donate your time, your money or both ... $29, $58 or $87 or even $1.00, but please never forget the 29th of each month in honor of our beloved Barbaro ... his legacy must go on forever and his memory must be rekindled on the 29th day of each and every month until laminitis is eradicated, prevented and cured.

The link to Laminitis Research Fund at UPenn:

http://www.vet.upenn.edu/giving/giving_ways.html

ALSO ... IF YOU DONATE THIS MONTH TO THE LAMINITIS RESEARCH FUND, YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE COMPLIMENTARY THE SPRING 2007 BELLWETHER MAGAZINE WHICH WILL FEATURE A SPECIAL 'BARBARO SECTION' DEVOTED TO OUR BOY ... NOW HOW'S THAT FOR AN EXTRA INCENTIVE???

Posted by: Equine Heaven at May 26, 2007 5:28 PM

I JUST HAVE TO SAY ...

THANK YOU SO MUCH EQUINE HEAVEN FOR ...

SECRETARIAT & RUFFIAN'S PENDING NUPTIALS!!!

Even though it "is" a "Heavenly" fantasy and dream, reading the 'saga' of their upcoming wedding still gives me chills and tear-filled eyes! I hope I never wake up from the "loveliness" of it all!!

Now ... if only Equine Heaven could just 'continue' this dream request (Hint Hint!) ... The Wellmont Stakes Race is coming up, and what better way to celebrate the speed of Big Red's "Wedding" to the equally speedy Ruffian than to have him fly around the track on the wings of love beating his own track record time and margin of victory !!!!

Posted by: Linnie at May 26, 2007 5:35 PM

Am I correct in my thinking ...... that the donations sent Dawn/Angela for the unsuccessful Cavel rescue ........ have been transferred to the Moms and Babies/rescue where approximately $6000 is still needed ????

### Cal... I will do it if my husband lets me. He is trying to get me to calm down still. I am still really upset about Mending Fences for some reason. I don't know why I can't get over that particular stallion. That drove me over the edge. I had to go to the hospital on that one.

I am better now though. I need the weekend to re-group... My dog had to go to the dog-tor yesterday and it has just been one thing right after another.. I will try to get this going next week. My masters program (that I am on medical leave for) is politics all the way so I could actually be a lot of help probably. Our governor and some of our senators do lectures in some of my classes. I am starting back up with school in the fall for one more class then going on to another masters..... Egaaaaaaaaads......

Email me with details.... I will be gone most of the day but I'll get it laters.... Do you have my new email?????

Love to Barbaro.....

Linnie,

Secretariat is floating on "cloud nine", so to speak, ("cloud 8" was being fluffed), so is Ruffian....they were destined to be together...

As far as the "All~Is~Wellmont Stakes" coming up on June 9th (your Earthly day and month)...it's left up to the "Powers That Be", and no matter who wins, Heaven's Gate Farm will be celebrating, all of the animals, in perfect harmony...........

LEE

I have been trying to remember where I saw a piece of art that is soooooooo similar to your "vision" and I finally found it!!!!

Go to DB - do advanced search for post 9865.1 and you will be stunned to see a beautiful piece of artwork by kelli hoffman. Stunned not because it is beautiful, but stunned because of the similarity to what you described.

I agree wholeheartedly that Anna is a wonderfully talented artist, but the "style" you seemed to be envisioning is kelli hoffman, I think....

Hope this helps......let me know if you see this post - I will look for a post from you tomorrow morning.

Many of the Senators' voice mail boxes are full in their DC offices -- this seems to be particularly true of the group of cosponsors from 2006 who have not yet cosponsored this year. If that's the case, call their local offices.

RE: Yesterday's FREE JEWELRY FOR YOU!!! fundraiser: Thank you most sincerely to the participants. You put our team "Pot" (money that the team members themselves contributed), over the TOP! Which means that we will be able to save a nurse mare foal in honor of Abercrombie & Fitch. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Participants - if you did not receive my email last evening, please send an email to me ASAP (GlendaOBrn@aol.com) so I can get the info I need to proceed with "bracelet selection" - ooooooooooooooh, the FUN part for me! then the mailing, the FUN part for you!

######
To ALL:

If you don't know about nurse mare foals, please read about this cruel practice (not "gorrey", but, yes, sad) on websites for Last Chance Corral (in OH) and Pure Thoughts (where the Teams were formed in order to take in foals FROM LCC, so that LCC can make room to SAVE MORE FOALS). This is an issue that anyone involved in horse rescue should be aware of.... You may or may not end up joining us in holding up our banner, but,

Knowledge is ALWAYS power.

There are several "open" teams where everyone is welcome to join. Judy from CT and I are on Team Abercrombie & Fitch, but you may see familar names on other "open" teams, and we ALL could use your help!

Thanks for listening.

E-CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS

Mary S posted this site on the Forum....on this Memorial Day weekend, regardless of our own opinions on the war in Iraq, I believe it is an absolute necessity that we honor our troops. A RE-POST FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND CROWD!!!

AIN'T TOO PROUD TO BEG

I hate a "hard sell"........but for a good cause, I will do what's necessary.

DO NOT SKIP OVER THIS POST - I NEED YOU TO READ THIS, THINK ABOUT WHAT IT SAYS, THEN ACT ON IT!

You say you care about anti horse slaughter...you say you care about horse rescue.....you say you care about the Jackson's. I need you to "put your money where your mouth is"....and the reason I can say this WITHOUT any guilt, is because I am NOT talking about a lot of money here!

People want to know what our plans are for "all the horses" when horse slaughter ends. The answer is - WE WILL TAKE CARE OF THEM! We will support horse rescue and adoption and education. WE WILL STEP UP....WE WILL MARCH ON. That's what we say, right?

WELL, WE ALREADY HAVE HORSES TO TAKE CARE OF....AND TO PUT IT SIMPLY, WE AREN'T DOING AS GOOD A JOB AS WE SHOULD. IT DOES NOT HELP TO "RESCUE" AND THEN NOT "MAINTAIN". SORRY, BUT IT'S TRUE.

We should not need some fancy "Tribute" to move us to help, but we have an FOB who busts her butt to make US LOOK GOOD with her innovative, creative tributes. I am asking you to go to the DB TODAY to read the information on the thread for the Father's Day Tribute for the MO Horses.

To those of you who have been regular contributors, sincere thanks, but DON'T STOP NOW! And for those of you who have not participated, WE NEED YOU - THESE HORSES NEED YOU. It is NOT expensive to be part of this solution....you can contribute $5.00 for one horse.....no one even knows how much you contribute - what they DO know is that you cared enough to participate. That is what counts - that is what makes you part of the solution. BUT, HEY IF YOU CAN DONATE MORE, then do it!!! The point is - do SOMETHING.

Go read the information. Think about what these horses have gone through. Then ACT.

I KNOW YOU HAVE $5.00........if you didn't, you wouldn't have internet access. (To be honest, I don't have $5.00 to spare right now, but come June 1 - yipee, I'll be ready to roll!!!)

If you read all the way through this, I thank you. If you go to the DB and make a donation for the MO horses for the Father's Day Tribute, then God Bless You.

Respectfully,
Glenda Jo O'Brien

Tomorrow is even worse, going over to the old house to clean and Monday too.. I am NOT happy...
I'm going to go finish off those brownies...

Posted by: Harriette Brillianthawk at May 26, 2007 9:00 PM

We will prevail on this issue if we stay strong and never give up. Pro slaughter hasn't ever come up against anything as tough as the FOBs!! Why are we tough? Because we have the ultimate inspiration -- even as tough as we are, we can never match the courage Barbaro showed us. But we do this for him and in his memory, and in the memory of every terrified, shaking horse who was abused by those people. That's why we are strong and why we simply WILL NOT go away until business is taken care of.

Posted by: Elizabeth Thompson at May 26, 2007 9:01 PM

Happy Weekend FOBs,

So Cavel is at it again. Not surprising. They won't go away until they know they are up against a determined, committed group of people who will NOT go away EVER. If anything, our numbers will grow. They keep filing lawsuits - that has to get expensive at some point.

Don't anyone get discouraged. Most good causes don't reach their goal quickly or easily. We're here to hold each other up. Let's keep calling, emailing, faxing, writing or whatever method of communication you do best. The politicians must hear our voices.

Have a great, safe holiday weekend!!

### Glenda in NE PA - Thanks for the truly excellent Churchill quote. And yes. I will be contributing, as I have every month since February! Sometimes it's $20.00, and last month, my birthday helped me make it quite a bit more, courtesy of my wonderful children! But your point is well-taken, and every $ 5.00 helps! And it must be said that Rosemary creates exquisite tributes. Thank you also for your own wonderful fundraiser for the foals. I will email you tomorrow - I've been on the computer all day, it seems, and the cats, dogs and husband are all looking pouty! Also, my grass needs cutting...

### Elizabeth Thompson - You are quite a motivator, and I thank you. Keep up like this, girlfriend, and you'll be doing the St. Crispin's day speech from Henry V as we storm the battlements and close down the slaughter houses! "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers..." - (well, okay, mostly sisters!).
### Glenda in NE PA - Thanks so much for the work on the foal rescue, and for making it so much fun to do the right thing.

### Nancy in CT - Thanks also for the link for cards to the service people. As the wife of a former Marine, who was in another essentially purposeless war, I am grateful to those who can separate their personal feelings - (and I absolutely agree with you re: Iraq, as does my fella) - from the need to support those who are in our service. I've just followed your suit, and appreciate the easy-peasey link.

Right at this moment I would not mind having a nice little motor boat..........but I suppose I'd look like quite the jackass sitting in it out there in the backyard while balancing a plate of potato salad and hot dogs on my lap, huh?

Anyway, there is a nice breeze coming thru my windows while I type, so that will do for now.

Thank YOU for your comments and your many, many contributions.

Would you like to be part of the book project??

Posted by: Harriette Brillianthawk at May 26, 2007 10:41 PM

### Glenda - Thank you, thank you, thank you for the first real laugh I've had since Tuesday. I will TREASURE the picture of you in the yard, in the motorboat. It doesn't matter that it's not really happening. It is the ability to ENVISION it that is the gift!

In the process of this remodel, we found a hobby horse my husband made for the kids when they were little. Since its head is carved from a piece of wood that was originally only 3 inches deep, it resembles a horse in profile, but from the front looks like nothing so much as a slightly irritated Doberman with unusually long ears, and was far, far too heavy for the babies when they were young. However, the other night, as we were recuperating from the fact that the "remodel", thus far, consists of a new roof and a black hole where my bathroom used to be, Claire, my bipolar and wonderful 27-year-old daughter, picked up the hobby horse - (she's in a manic phase right now, thank the powers that be!) - and started galloping around the yard, singing "Happy Trails to You". John and I were laughing so hard we were almost sick. We are feeble-minded when it comes to entertainment - perhaps fortunate, since we have no money!

Anyhow, my point is that as you cruise your backyard, we'll be in the front yard, doing trail rides...

Thanks for all your kindness.

Is it you who came up with the chocolate AND peanut-butter grilled sandwich?????? I mentioned it to my husband last evening and he made a "puke face" at me.....but I'm gonna try it & SOON.

Do Princesses have wands - I thought it was only Fairies and Witches - like the Good Witch of the North, Glinda, right Dee?

I think maybe a scepter with dragonflies fluttering about it would be best for Harriette. The dragonflies wouldn't all have to be there at once - that way the could be out delivering messages, BUT at all times at least three would be circling. Can you see it???

Harriette, can you see it? I can.

I do like the dragonflies, tho...Saw one this morning..and I have watched two yellow butterflies all day fluttering around my yard. They have been here all day, always together.

Lyn, if you are really Lyn and serious I would be
so honored to have you join our book project.

Glenda / Harriette,
I came up with adding peanut butter to the grilled chocolate sandwich, but I've yet to try it. I can't be held responsible if you don't like it. But I am going to try it. But I do know I have had grilled peanut butter sandwiches, and they are awsome. Another thing that is good, is a peanut butter sandwich chased with chocolate milk. Sounds gross, but it's terrific. I'ts always about the chocolate.

Miss Harriette:) I see you scurrying around with your dust rag in one hand and a mop in the other....and a perfectly 'perched Tiara' sitting upon your head:)

Perhaps the two yellow butterflies are in fact, Barbaro and Gallant Secret coming to pay you and the kids a visit:) Anyway, that is what pleases my head:)

Hi sandra - next Saturday, but Lynn has to have the funds cleared by Tuesday or Thursday (its a T day - sorry I'm tired). It is a cash sale. I would say send what you can asap, but let them know on the forum the dollar amount so it can be counted towards the total. She has also said to go ahead and send checks if you have to, and what has not cleared she will cover until they do. Yes, a mighty nation - for the love of a horse.

Alex, thank you for all of the updates. Yesterday's news on Mr. Lakeman was better than the day before. I fervently hope the news will continue to get better for him.

It's great to hear about the ongoing activities of the '06 Derby contenders. There were so many wonderful horses in that field. Lawyer Ron is a personal favorite of mine. I'm glad to hear Sweetnorthernsaint is back at it and in good form; we didn't hear much about him after the TC races last year.

For all who love Barbaro
and for the hundreds alive now because of this devotion. A poem by ee cummings
************************************************
i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)

i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

Posted by: jonna at May 27, 2007 4:46 PM

Okay, my computer just nickered at me.

Like others, the squeaky hinge, door slamming, barking........regular occurances.

Once, a long time ago, and never since, a meow. (Miss Kitty?)

Last night two separate sounds I did not understand - like words in Spanish.

But, today, just now, I got nickered at.(Barbaro? Bobby?)

Danged if I know what it means, but I heard it clear as a bell.

We are an amazing group and WE ARE A POTENT NEW FORCE IN THE BATTLE TO END HORSE SLAUGHTER IN AMERICA.

So now we can settle in, enjoy the holiday weekend & recharge to resume the battle next week...BUT ONLY AFTER WE CONTACT THE 9 SENATORS LISTED BELOW WHO COSPONSORED IN '06, BUT HAVEN'T COSPONORED THIS YEAR. For those of us who chose to lobby the entire TX & Illinois legislatures in addition to following the official strategy, contacting only 9 people will be a piece of cake.

JOHN HOLLAND TOLD AN FOB THAT CALLING FORMER COSPONSORS IS A GREAT PLAN AND WE SHOULD ALL BE REACHING OUT TO THEM, so get in the habit of calling them in addition to following the official strategy and doing whatever else you are doing to end the slaughter of American horses.

Tell them that being "for the bill" isn't enough & that, if the events of last week showed us anything, they showed that ONLY FEDERAL LEGISLATION WILL KEEP AMERICAN HORSES SAFE, AND TO DO THAT WE NEED COSPONSORS.

Remember: You MUST say you are contacting them to urge them to cosponsor S. 311 -- if you don't mention the bill number, your call/fax/e-mail won't count in the tallies. And if their DC phone mail boxes are full, call the local offices, and if you still can't get through, e-mail them or fax them.

Horsey Humor

IDENTIFICATION OF THE FEMALE EQUESTRIAN

* Easy to locate, she's either off on the horse or out in the barn.
* Upholds the double standard: smooches with the most bewhiskered beast, but recoils when hubby needs a shave.
* Owns one vacuum cleaner and operates it exclusively in the barn.
* Economy minded: won't waste money on permanents, facials or manicures.
* A culinary perfectionist: checks every section of hay for mold but doesn't blink when she petrifies dinner in the microwave.
* Easy to outfit: no need for embarrassing visits to uncomfortable little boutiques. You can find all she wears at your local tack store.
* Features a selective sense of smell: bitterly complains about hubby's sticky-sweet cigar smoke, while remaining totally oblivious to the almost visible aroma of her barn boots drying next to the heater.
* A master at multiplication: she starts with one horse, adds a companion, and if it's a mare, she breeds it.
* Socially aware: knows that formal occasions call for clean boots.
* Easy to please: a new wheelbarrow, custom boots or even a folding hoof pick will win her heart forever.
* Shows her affection in unusual ways: if she pats you on the neck and says "you're a good boy," believe it or not, she loves you!

Nancy in Ct--yep, gotta love a horse named after a 70's rock band. Plus, he's a grey. And, he's a Missouri boy! His Derby bio said he gets the winters off and lives on his owner's farm in Missouri. He's probably spent the spring covered in mud. Barbaro and Felix and the gang have been dumping a lot of troffs this weekend.

### Thanks, Kathy B - I have never figured out the alarm thingies, and am afraid that if I try, I will be awakened at 2:00 a.m. by a noise I can't shut down coming from my computer.

####### Jonna - thank you for posting the ee cummings poem at May 27, 2007 4:46 PM. How appropriate! He is one of my alltime idols; discovered him in the 50's. Saw him in the early 60's reading from his works "in concert" at the auditorium attached to Orchestra Hall in Chicago. The one I'm always quoting is "O Sweet Spontaneous Spring" - will go find and post. Also "What if a much of a which of a wind" which greatly influenced me as a lyricist. Excuse me people for being Off Topic - my way of getting away from it all.

The news from MHR was so sad; I talked to Stephanie this morning, called as soon as I read about it. But get this - she said MHR was expecting two new abuse/neglect cases. What a bittersweet twist of karma, eh?

Been corresponding with Lillian Petroff, who says she reads "everything" but just doesn't have the strength to post (health concerns). She sends her best and is with us all the way in the fight against horse slaughter. And of course she ended her last email:

###### must clarify - the sad news from MHR is that two horses were lost Saturday - Sierra had to be euthanized due to Laminitis; and Suzy - one of the blind horses - died in her sleep at age 40. When I read a post in the MHR group digest that said "Sad day at MHR" I immediately thought something bad had happened with our impending Misty; but no, it was the news of Sierra and Suzy.

JEAN NOLAN - guilty as charged! Actually the full title I gave her is "Misty the Magnificent Matriarch of the Miracle Horse Maternity Ward!"

and, yes, she's on high alert now, so we're all hoping for a baby during the daylight so we can watch on marestare.com! It's only 3:51 pm in NV, so we've got a good chance...

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO GET HBO, tonight at 9 pm Eastern Time....HBO has produced a movie of "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee"...I read the book when it first came out (maybe in the early 70's??) and it was an epiphany moment for me! From the trailer I saw, it won't be an easy movie to watch but looks very well done!

Posted by: nancyinct at May 28, 2007 12:13 AM

Angela sent Lynn $4000 from the Cavel attempt (not $6000) due to the number of refunds requested. We are short the $2000, so we are not finished fundraising after all. Please go to the DB for details. Will you please donate to help reach the goal for the mares and foals!

WOW - what a day at the races for Tim! Alex thank you for the up-to-the-minute coverage. I needed a break from watching racing today - been watching cooking shows (!) - and was sooooo happy - KVELLING MIT NACHAS is more like it - to read that both Who's Happy and Red Aspen won their respective races.

#####
Jonna and any other ee cummings fans - here's the one I was looking for; IMO it really says it all:

O SWEET SPONTANEOUS by e.e. cummings

O sweet spontaneous

earth how often have

the
doting

fingers of
prurient philosophers pinched
and
poked

thee
, has the naughty thumb
of science prodded
thy

beauty . how
often have religions taken
thee upon their scraggy knees
squeezing and

buffeting thee that thou mightest conceive
gods
(but
true

to the incomparable
couch of death thy
rhythmic
lover

thou answerest

them only with

spring)

LAURIE H - what's the news on Bart?

Posted by: nancyinct at May 28, 2007 12:49 AM

Bummer about Cavel monies.

### Nancy in Ct - Oh, mistress of alliteration!

### Laurie H - Two things. One, who is Miss Claire? That is my daughter's nickname, so I HAVE to ask! And...how's Bart?

### C Jaffe - THANK YOU for the cummings! I loved that poem passionately, and somehow middle age knocked it out of my head! You are a mensch!
