Barbaro Updates: 293

updates are now here.

Update 1965: Street Sense is scheduled to work tomorrow at Churchill, with a Belmont decision the following day: Street Sense connections to make Belmont decision Thursday, excerpt:

"This will be a work we can go either way with," Nafzger said. "Whatever Mr. Tafel's decision is, we can come off of that work and go either way. He's doing good and he's getting around there okay, but you've just got to see where you are."

Curlin, who is among the likely contenders for the Belmont Stakes, walked the shedrow at trainer Steve Asmussen's Churchill barn one day after working five furlongs in 1:03.20 under regular exercise rider Carmen Rosas.

Asmussen's assistant, Scott Blasi, said the muscular Smart Strike colt appeared to be strong on Tuesday morning.

"He came out of that work super," Blasi said.

Update 1964: Racing's Hall of Fame inductees this year include five horsemen and three horses: Eight Set for Induction into Racing Hall of Fame, excerpt:

Jockeys Jose Santos and John Sellers; trainers Henry Forrest, Frank McCabe, and John Veitch; and the horses Mom's Command, Silver Charm, and Swoon's Son are this year's inductees. Santos, Veitch, Mom's Command, and Silver Charm were elected in the contemporary categories, while Sellers, Forrest, McCabe, and Swoon's Son were elected by the Historic Review Committee, which considers candidates who have not been active in 25 years.

The ceremony takes place in Saratoga in August.

Update 1963: A stunning morning this morning at Fair Hill. Three to ride. First was Fortuna (aka "New Horse") and she went across the fields with Tim on Grandma. We had a nice jog / hack around. Tim was excited, his football team won yesterday and are now back in the premiership. We chatted about that and the horses who ran this weekend, who all seem in good shape after their races. Second out was Gator Nation. He also went across the fields, this time we went solo. He was happy. Tim went to the track on Mediman along with Penny on Luke. Finally I had Nautical Agent, and she went to the Tapeta track along with Tim on Quick Quest. We galloped a mile and a quarter, Tim sitting in just behind me. Once we were done Nautical Agent "high stepped" it off the track, much to the amusement of onlookers including Michael and Peter. A few people still congratulating Tim on his great weekend.

Update 1962: Racing may have a star it so desperately needs. The Tin Man returned to the races yesterday after an eight month break and won another grade 1 race at the age of nine, a feat not accomplished since John Henry in 1984: The Tin Man Still Chopping in Shoemaker Return, excerpt:

"He's better now than he has ever been, loves what he's doing, he's confident and luckily he is healthy and sound," Mandella said. "We turned him out a while back because he just got tired and stiff. After two months he came back fine. We might try the Arlington Million again, but we're also thinking of trying him on the synthetic surface because he has trained very well on it, every work has been good. Anything this horse does is extra satisfactory right now."

In other racing news yesterday, Lawyer Ron finished third in the Met Mile behind Corinthian: Jerkenses Post Met Mile Upset and Sweetnorthernsaint found Bob and John to be a little too tough in Texas: Bob and John Turns Back 'Saint in Lone Star Handicap.

Monday, June 4 (next monday), there will be a special screening of HBO's Barbaro Documentary, at Unionville High School. Reception at 5pm, screening at 6:30 pm. Dr. Richardson will be present. FOBs are invited to attend, on a 'first come first serve' basis, tickets are limited to two per caller. If interested, please call 1-888-873-4574. Hope to see some of you there.

Good morning-

TO EVERYONE WORKING ON ANTI SLAUGHTER...

Please stay focused on our calling instructions!
We need 60 senate co-sponsors (33 more) to get S311 to a vote. This is by far the most direct path to our goal of permanently ending horse slaughter in the U.S.

Getting senate co-sponsors should be our top priority at the moment.

Thanks to you all and please join your state group!

Hiya, FsOB! Wishing everyone a productive day. Tonight I want to check to see if Sen. Obama has signed on as a co-sponsor of S-311 yet. If he has not, I'll send him a note of thanks for his contacting Governor Blagojevich's office last week AND I'll let him know that co-sponsorship of S-311 will help me decide whom to support in the Democratic Presidential primary.

#### To Marg in Maine: Thanks for your kind note about my recently becoming engaged.
To Alex: I hope that your travel to the UK has been very positive.
To Harriette: Hoping that Noah and Cheyenne have a good week. ####

Alex - Thanks for posting the link to The Bloodhorse story on the great Tin Man! As I posted on the Message Board last night, I was at Hollywood Park yesterday to watch him run, and he just took my breath away! He IS a "Star", and he knows it! I wish TVG had shown him in the paddock, before the parade. He looked just magnificent. I also caught his last race at Santa Anita on September 30th - he won that one too. This is one classy old gent, and the crowds absolutely LOVE him - me included!

Good Morning Barbaro

Seems so long to say good morning to the ray of sunshine to all of us. Hope all is well with you and Gallant Secret. Sounds like the love bug has bitten a few in heaven. Have fun, sweetie, we love you, you will never be forgotten because the FOBS ARE HERE.

Good Morning Family,Fans of Barbaro

Family...such a beautiful word. Togetherness, love, compassion, and unity. That is what all you FOBS are and more.

Please, horses are being taken across the borders, worse brutality than ever. Let us join forces and call, fax, and email. Everyone is needed. One extra call, fax, email...can make a difference.

Remember the rescues, the ones suffering, anyone who needs prayer or a helping animal. Pray for animals and children that they will not face another day of neglect or abuse.

Hope everyone had plenty of rest, and now are ready to fight another battle...for Barbaro's brothers and sisters.

Have a nice day.

Good morning Alex and Tim

DEBBIE LA - Thanks for the heads up, the corrected list is below.

Strategy for Tuesday May 29

We must remember that without the federal legislation being passed, our horses are still in harms way. They are still free to be transported to Canada and Mexico. AND, there is no guarantee that a slaughterhouse won't open in another state that might welcome them!! We can't just let the slaughter of our horses be re-located....we must end it once and for all!! Every day is another crisis and they will never be safe until the American Horse Slaughter Act is passed. An American horse ending up in a "kill chute" ANYWHERE is unconscionable!!

That being said, It’s time once again to UNITE if we are going to help make an impact in getting the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act passed.

We as FOB’s have made a tremendous difference when it really counted!! Besides our collective passion, we are STRONG in numbers but that strength will diminish if we continue to go in different directions.

As OUR STRATEGY comes directly from DC, we are asking you all to UNITE now to create that FOB impact. That impact can only work if we are ALL on the same page, targeting the SAME people everyday.

This week, again – WE MUST FOCUS ON THE SENATE.

We just spoke with DC on Friday, May 25th. The latest is that many of the Senator cosponsors from last year say they support the bill but for political reasons have not cosponsored. It is best at this time that in addition to contacting our own Senators who have not yet cosponsored, that we also concentrate on last years cosponsors. In addition, we must also target Senators Obama and Durbin in IL.

As many of you know, there are state groups set up so the Senators/Reps will be heard by their own constituents. Many constituents don’t even know this bill (S311) exists. Therefore there are many states with no FOB groups calling on them, we must help out with those states now!!

In addition, please prepare yourself for another media blitz to happen in the very near future. However, this media blitz will have a twist. We are to send all letters to only South Dakota Media. We must hit South Dakota hard!!! Instructions to follow.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple.. Please tell ten
friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of
getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

AGAIN, PLEASE TELL 10 FRIENDS!!!

Pennsylvania Fans of Barbaro, we NEED your help! As Shelly and Debra have repeatedly told us, we cannot get these bills to a full vote without MORE COSPONSORSHIP. Pennsylvania is a big Ag state, and we are fighting a tough lobby. WILL YOU HELP US?

We have started a Pennsylvania Strategy like many of the other states have. Our team is NOW 45 strong and we’d like more of you to join us!

I am the Pennsylvania State Leader. Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation. You can email me at Lor in PA.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

So let's get out there and SAVE those horses! Call your REPS and SENATORS...do it in loving memory of our Barbaro and all the nameless, faceless horses being trucked into Mexico and Canada and dying brutally...Please contact me and join our team if you live in Pennsylvania and want to help rescue horses from slaughter.

I GET IT.

Thank you Tim and Alex for all you do for us through this board, the site, and its links. You are both wonderful.

###
I apologize for expressing my doubts about the wisdom of running The Tin Man (the grand OLD man ;o) His trainer said he thanked the owners who let him do what was right by the horse. And from the looks of that handsome devil, he really enjoyed what he was doing yesterday.

"Doing what is right" by ANY animal is and should be our prime directive.

###
Have a wonderful four-day week, those of you who got to enjoy the holiday but who, like me, have to return to the mines ;o)

A story to consider. Another example of why we are doing what we are doing for horses in the name of Barbaro.

A farmer had puppies to sell. He posted a sign advertising the pups. As he was posting the sign, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of little boy.

"Mister, I want to buy one of your puppies."

"Well," these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change. "I've got 39 cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. As the little boy pressed his face against fence his eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in an awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up...

"I want that one, pointing to the runt.?

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attached to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well and he will need someone who understands."

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy.

"No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."

THE INDY 500 IS HISTORY! LET'S MAKE HORSE SLAUGHTER THAT WAY TOO...

We're 12 strong but need each and every Indiana FOB to help us contact Indiana legislators. It's quick, it's easy (totally painless, actually) and will help make a difference for the horses.

Email me at cynsear@aol.com to get started!!!

Morning (psychic) skritches to the BBH and all of his fabulous frens in Equine Heaven...!

MORNING REPOST, SHELLEY A, DEBRA WI:

GOOD MORNING FOB'S!!!

List for today: (PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION BILL S311)

Jim DeMint (SC)
202-224-6121 phone
202-228-5143 fax

Evan Bayh (IN)
202-224-5623 phone
202-228-1377 fax

Bill Nelson (FL)
202-224-5274 phone
202-228-2183 fax

Charles Schumer (NY)
202-224-6542 phone
202-228-3027

Barack Obama (IL)
202-224-2854 phone
202-228-4260 fax

Richard Durbin (IL)
202-224-2152 phone
202-228-0400 fax

If you would like to see a complete list of Senators that co-sponsored last year but are not yet co-sponsors this year, we will post that information on the DB under the thread for “Strategy For today”

Thanks for all your hard work and have a great day!!

Shelley and Debra

Cheers,
Friar Tuck

Hello HERD

Just wanted to pass on some notes from calling.
WE MUST REALLY BE HITTING THEM HARD TODAY... WAY TO GO!!!

Senator Obamas line was tied up had to leave a message.

All others knew the bill I was talking about when I gave them the number. GREAT JOB REMEMBERING TO GIVE THE BILL NUMBER. The ones I talked to told ME what it was for...LOL

For those of you who can not afford to call direct like me, please get the 800# from your state leader. It costs nothing to call and is just as quick. PLEASE CALL. And all the aides are really nice, at least in the morning anyway...LOL

If you have not yet called or are hesitant to, please do. The aides are great and this is what they do, so expect you to call. If they tell you that you aren't in their district, just tell them it is a federal issue and you are calling on a Federal level, they will gladly accept your call.

If you haven't yet joined a state calling group PLEASE JOIN WE NEED YOUR VOICE

Thanks for listening.

Love,
Verna

A couple of quick notes from today's calling list:

Sen. DeMint's Agriculture aide's name is Stacey Gilbert. She's the one who's handling S311 there.

Sen. Bayh's ag. aide is Patrick Hayes. He will not be back in the office until June 4. I just spoke with another aide (don't remember his name).

Sen. Obama was still busy!

Sen. Durban's ag aide is Erin (didn't get her last name).

Hope this info helps get our calls to the right people.

Let's get another senator co-sponsor THIS WEEK!! Contact these folks, and contact your own senators who are not co-sponsors. We need to put the pressure on now. We don't have a day to lose -- they could get Cavel up and running again before the week is out. Please help me, FOBs, in Barbaro's memory.

Just another reminder: we all need to be targeting the same people on the same day - there is power in numbers! And the only way to achieve this is for every one of us to follow Shelley and Deb's daily "assignment" which comes from DC contacts. Please make their strategy YOUR strategy so that we don't dilute our efforts!

Florida FOB'S the horses need you.

If you haven't joined our group please do it for the horses. It only takes a few minutes every day to call the list emailed to you. We only have 6 reps who have co-sponsored and both senators co-sponsored last year but have not yet this year. We need to keep the momentum going while the slaughter houses here are closed. The reps and senators in Texas and Illinois have listened to their constiuents and now it is time for Florida's reps and senators to hear us. To join please email me at sirbear@bellsouth.net.

Thankful Misty had a safe delivery of a healthy, beautiful colt, her last baby at age 26.

For those of you who don't read the DB, I started a thread last night regarding one of my favorite fillies, Three Degrees who was euthanized on the track at Hollywood yesterday after a horrible injury in the Gamely Handicap. Her owners were distraught and please pray for her since she joined Barbaro last night. It brought back bad memories of Spook Express' similar injury on the Hollywood turf course years ago.

We are a great group saving all the mares and foals from slaughter, now on to saving the pregnant mares, every little donation adds up and they are running out of time.

HELLO FOB NATION ...

I hope that everyone had a fun, enjoyable, relaxing, safe and happy Memorial Weekend! I certainly did, and I made a great 'connection' down at the pool yesterday with a neighbor/friend I hadn't seen in a long time. She knew about my love for Barbaro and my dedication to his long recovery process at the time, and of course, we talked about all of that yesterday, plus laminitis research, horse rescue, horse slaughter, etc. She wants to get involved also. I never knew that she loved horses also and now she wants to go anywhere that we can see and be with horses down here in South Florida, and there are a lot of places we can go, one of them being Last Chance Corral here in West Palm Beach. So this is definitely on our 'agenda', plus visiting other stables in Davie, here in Delray and possibly taking a drive to Ocala one of these days where the 'big boys' hang out!! All in all, a great 're-connection' was made ... Thank YOU, Barbaro!! I know you made this happen!!!
########################
I missed a LOT judging from just now reading some of Alex's updates.

First ... CONGRATULATIONS TO TIM, ALEX AND EVERYONE CONNECTED WITH RED ASPEN AND WHO'S HAPPY ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL WINS AT MONMOUTH AND PHILADELPHIA PARK ... and I'm very glad that the jockey on "Who's Happy" escaped his 'dumping' without injury.

Congratulations to Gloria for her 'quiz win' and to Horse Feathers Rescue as the recipient of the $100 'prize'.

This is all I've caught up on so far, but I'll keep reading!!

OK, TODAY IS ... THE 29TH OF MAY ... THE DAY THAT WE HONOR AND CELEBRATE BARBARO'S LIFE AND PUT ANOTHER 'NAIL IN THE LAMINITIS COFFIN' ... TODAY IS $29 ON THE 29TH FOR "LET'S LICK LAMINITIS" ...

Again I want to thank everyone who participated in honoring and remembering Barbaro on Preakness Day with their $6.00 or more donations ... I'm sure you were more than generous, and I thank you so much. And, I also want to congratulate again everyone who participated in the various Barbaro Birthday Celebrations last April 29th!! I can't believe it's almost one full month since we were all celebrating Barbaro's 4th Birthday and "Licking Laminitis" with our contributions.

I can't believe how time flies ... just one month ago, on this very date, we were all gathering at various locations around the country to celebrate the Life of Barbaro on his 4th Birthday. And we raised a lot of money in various ways through a myriad of wonderful projects on behalf of laminitis research. And we need to keep on what we've been doing if we want to see an 'end' to this disease in our lifetimes, and it is very 'doable' if we stay vigilant and devoted to what's needed ... education, research and a whole lotta money! Those are the facts ... and we all know that.

The Triple Crown Challenge for this month for those who can do it ... $29 for Barbaro's Derby Win in the month of May; $29 in honor of the greatest trainer in the world - Michael Matz; and $29 in memory of Mending Fences who lost his young life on Preakness Day. Let's not forget this great horse or his connections ...

So, whatever you can afford, please donate your time, your money or both ... $29, $58 or $87 or even $1.00, $5,00, $10.00 ... but please never forget the 29th of each month in honor of our beloved Barbaro ... his legacy must go on forever and his memory must be rekindled on the 29th day of each and every month until laminitis is eradicated, prevented and cured.

ALSO ... IF YOU DONATE THIS MONTH TO THE LAMINITIS RESEARCH FUND, YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE COMPLIMENTARY THE SPRING 2007 BELLWETHER MAGAZINE WHICH WILL FEATURE A SPECIAL 'BARBARO SECTION' DEVOTED TO OUR BOY ... NOW HOW'S THAT FOR AN EXTRA INCENTIVE???

PREVIEW/REVIEW ON HBO BARBARO DOC. AND RUFFIAN MOVIE ...

GALLOPING GHOSTS
RUFFIAN AND BARBARO ARE LINKED FOREVER BY SPEED AND TRAGEDY
by Mike Battaglino

May 29, 2007 -- IF central casting had gotten to pick the name for the latest America's Horse, it might have been forced to go with "Barbara."

That's because you can't outrun the idea that Bar baro's tragic story would have been more wrenching if he'd been a girl.

Champion filly Ruffian also broke down on the track as she was taking the country's imagination for a ride - and the heartbreaking stories more than 30 years apart are (sorry) a dead heat.

The two will be neck-and-neck again next week when HBO unveils the documentary "Barbaro" (June 6, 8 p.m.) and ABC follows with the real-life drama "Ruffian" (June 9, 9 p.m.).

"Ruffian" actually had the jump in this race, with ESPN (which made the movie) revealing its plans for a film early in 2006, months before Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby then was injured in the Preakness.

Now it is impossible to watch one without interchanging the other. From the soft-spoken, true-horsemen trainers; to the elegant, married-couple owners; to the selfless jockeys; to the unyielding media coverage; to the broken legs; to the public's emotional outpouring - it's clear each at one time walked in the other's horseshoes.

Bill Nack, a former New York sports writer, wrote the book on which "Ruffian" is based and is prominent in "Barbaro" interviews.

"These animals become like national pets," Nack says in "Barbaro." "These horses become like the center of a Greek tragedy, and when we see them injured like this we're all part of the chorus, trying to bring them back."

In the spring of 1975, unbeaten Ruffian won the Triple Tiara (the filly Triple Crown), and that summer, in an effort to boost interest in a dying sport, was placed in a "Battle of the Sexes" match race against Derby winner Foolish Pleasure at Belmont Park.

In it, she snapped a leg, and though surgery to save her at first looked successful, she had to be put down.

Sound familiar?

The approach of each program couldn't be more different, though. "Ruffian" is for fans of horse racing, a film with trackside scenes so detailed you can almost smell the . . . hay. And railbirds will enjoy spotting their favorite Belmont and Saratoga haunts, much the same way Jersey goombahs scout their neighborhood diner in "The Sopranos."

"Barbaro" is for fans of Barbaro, an elaborate home movie that's more intimate than the NBC version already aired, with clips from hospital visits particularly poignant.

The endings are the same. The finish line came much too early for these young superstars, making them the Patsy Cline and Buddy Holly of their sport.

But, as Ruffian's trainer Frank Whitely (played by Sam Shepherd) says: "Well, that's horse racing, Mr. Nack. That's horse racing."

Hay Fambleee

Thanks for all the great news, Alex. Congratulations to Tim on his team's success, and I'm just gloating over Tin Man. I love that guy.

I am so far behind on email, my apologies to those I owe responses, dear Glenda, Harriette, and so many others. I admit to being very swept up by Miss Misty who proudly presented her gorgeous baby boy Spirit early yesterday morning, and spent a lot of yesterday getting caught up on much needed rest after spending way too much time traveling, etc., etc., blah blah blah...will get caught up...PROMISE.

Kept up on my calls, my emails, thank you letter to Il Gov., (keep working on Senator Obama, y'all) and got my acknowledgement of my auto-pay donation to UPenn, ongoing rescue efforts, etc., what's next??

Love to all

Hello all!! I feel like I haven't been here in a month.. First, I was without a computer at work on Thursday, then the long holiday weekend plans (4 days for me). I guess I'll have to stay up late for a couple of nights to catch up on all the posts! Hope everyone had a relaxing holiday.

###
CONGRATULATIONS to Misty!! I took a quick peek at baby Spirit & I must say he appears to have been dusted from stem to stern with angel dust.. Wonder who would have done that???

####
Glenda~ I ran home for lunch & your package was waiting for me!!! 'Beautiful' doesn't begin to describe the Baby Ben necklace :-) THANK YOU!! (I'll email you from home later on.)

##
Laurie H~ I'm sure Bart is happy the long weekend is over and his mom is back to work & fussing over him.

#####
Equine Heaven~ can't wait to see what kind of surprises you have next up your angelic sleeves!

You've got it Sophie -- a lot of it is a numbers game. The state calling groups are terrific, but you can only make a major impact if you have the most people possible targeting the same legislators. We should be calling our own reps, of course, but we can't ignore the numbers game. I think we have to have federal legislators BOTH hearing from constituents AND getting hammered with huge volumes of calls from around the country if we want to push the federal bills over the finish line this time.

And Biden is actually asking us to hammer him, SO LET'S DO IT:

Senator Joseph Biden D-DE

THE FIGHT CONTINUES TO SAVE AMERICA'S HORSES....

REPOST:
GOOD MORNING FOB'S!!!

List for today: (PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION BILL S311)

Jim DeMint (SC)
202-224-6121 phone
202-228-5143 fax

Evan Bayh (IN)

202-228-1377 fax

Bill Nelson (FL)

202-228-4260 fax

Richard Durbin (IL)
202-224-2152 phone

If you would like to see a complete list of Senators that co-sponsored last year but are not yet co-sponsors this year, we will post that information on the DB under the thread for “Strategy For today”

Thanks for all your hard work and have a great day!!

Give 'am all shock & awe (like that one!) & don't forget to mention you're asking them to cospnsor S. 311 since your call doesn't go into the tally if you don't mention the bill number.

Congrats to the newest members of Racing's Hall of Fame, to be enshrined August 6 in Saratoga.
Silver Charm, Mom's Command, Jose Santos and John Veitch. John Veitch was the trainer of the great Alydar, he is now a steward and in his interview today stated racing needs to get back to being a sport and less a business because the horses are suffering the consequences.

Anyone who saw ESPN'S OUTSIDE THE LINES was sickened as I was at the evidence they have against some NFL players including Michael Vick that have been running a nationwide dog fighting ring. These athletes making millions and getting their kicks watching innocent animals be brutally injured and killed is horrible. I hope they throw the book at them and the way they tortured these animals to get them to fight is indeed sub-human.

All senators aides said they have been swamped with calls today. Let's keep them busy.

Hi Linnie,
I'm afraid the Baby Ben "pre-sale" necklaces are gone(all the other necklaces that I made are packed up, ready to go to Last Chance Ranch for them to sell at events - to raise money for the nurse mare foals (and I don't have any more of the horse head pendants right now since I bought exactly 50).

I am a member of Team Abercrombie & Fitch Foal Team at Pure Thoughts and we ran a fundraiser called "FREE JEWELRY FOR YOU" on Friday for the first 10 people who responded .... I added a couple more people because we still needed more $$$$ for foal #2 (will be foal #3 for the team!!!) ..... but that deadline was at 6PM EST Monday (yesterday)to get the money in on time for the rescue today, so that is also a "no go".

HOWEVER, when I order the next batch of horse head pendants to make necklaces for a horse rescue fundraiser, I will post the info here and on the DB (I can send you an email if you want). I can "pre-sell" some of those for whichever rescue will get the batch. I will be trying to do that sometime mid to end of June (if my husband doesn't kill me first!)

My zazzle sales were supposed to help support my fundraisers and since I have not sold one single item since....I really don't know when!...hoo boy. Anyway, I am using out-of-pocket $$$ and giving away some of my jewelry inventory (cripes, I have TONS). "Whatever it takes", is my motto .... but Bob might not feel the same way(if he knew ALL the details, anyway! LOL)

So stay tuned! (and thanks for the inquiry).

The wear them to keep the flies out of their eyes. Some horses are more bothered than others, some owners just do not want the flies laying eggs in their eyes, some masks can protect eyes from sunlight and blowing sand or other things. My horse always wore a fly mask when the flies were out. Sometimes year around in Texas, depending on the weather. Some masks have ear protectors but the ear protectors bothered my horse so I just put the repelent on the ears.

I am sure that other reasons apply but this is the major of the reason.

Hello Dear Renee

Hope you had a wonderful birthday!

Some horses are actually bothered more by flies than others. I'm gonna guess maybe it's a supply issue with Stephanie and Rob, but don't know for sure, cuz I haven't heard the question raised before, and didn't know that Rosie did not have a mask. Since they both have foals and they both are at risk for getting bites and infection, I'd think it would be good to have a mask on Rosie as well. I dunno?? Maybe Steph needs some $$ for more masks??

LINDA LEE - you are correct - you got me good! Although I think my "career" as an amateur race reporter started much earlier in the summer....

Many people did not have TVG or HRTV so I was "delegated" to report on races...which was quite a chore because I'm a big baby who watches races peeking between my fingers...try doing that and typing "the call" at the same time...people were VERY kind about my reporting - I guess even a very amateur report was better than nothing! And of course I was reporting for BNN - Barbaro News Network! Looking back on it now, that was a fun and hopeful time (SIGH)....

CROSSPOST!

Texas Legislature Again Rejects Efforts to Legalize Horse Slaughter

AUSTIN, Texas, May 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Last night, the stroke
of midnight marked not only the end of the Texas Legislature's 80th
session, but also the end of the line for two of the nation's foreign-owned
horse slaughter facilities. For four years, proponents of horse slaughter
have tried to overturn a 1949 law that prohibits the sale, possession or
transport of horsemeat for human consumption.

"Texas citizens have been loud and clear in their opposition to horse
slaughter, and elected officials have listened," said Chris Heyde, deputy
legislative director for the Society for Animal Protective Legislation
(SAPL). "This is the second Texas legislative session to shoot down
attempts by the slaughterhouses to overturn a longstanding law against this
brutal practice."

In recent weeks, one amendment was tacked on to an otherwise
uncontroversial bill in the Texas Senate, but was removed when it reached
the state's House of Representatives. Pro-horse slaughter lobbyists only a
few days ago were in search of other bills that could be amended to keep
these plants open, but their efforts ceased when it was clear that they
didn't have the votes.

"Hundreds of thousands of Texans are breathing a sigh of relief that
we've finally driven a stake through the dark heart of the horse slaughter
industry," said Susan Hendrix, vice president of Texas Humane Legislation
Network (THLN). "Even with some of the most influential lobbyists in Austin
working as hired guns for the horse slaughter plants, it was clear to the
majority of legislators that they were trying to defend a practice that was
truly indefensible," she added.

With horse slaughter stopped in Texas and the sole operating plant in
Illinois closed, it is critical that the US Congress act immediately to
prevent American horses from being sent abroad for slaughter. Passage of
the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA), introduced as H.R. 503
and S. 311, is the only way to ensure horses do not suffer even greater
cruelty by being shipped to plants in Mexico and Canada.

"The American Veterinary Medical Association and other groups that
worked to keep horse slaughter plants open have stated that it would be
cruel to send horses to Mexico, and this is the one issue we both agree
on," Heyde said.

SAPL commends the hard work and dedication by Texans who led the fight
in Austin, including THLN, T. Boone and Madeleine Pickens, Habitat for
Horses and country music legend Willie Nelson.

As the legislative arm of the Animal Welfare Institute, SAPL is the
unsurpassed leader in obtaining laws to benefit animals in need, including
the protection of domestic and wild horses. For more information on how you
can help end horse slaughter, please visit
http://www.saplonline.org/horses.htm.

The THLN is a grassroots nonprofit organization that promotes the humane
treatment of animals through legislation, education and advocacy. For more
information about THLN please visit http://www.thln.org.

Mad Cows, Mad Pigs and the Horse Slaughter Lobby
Fur and Hooves Fly at Animal Welfare Hearings
By MARTHA ROSENBERG

Animal protectionists are winning the agriculture public relations battle said former Congressman Charlie Stenholm at House Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry hearings in May.

The recently defeated Texan and former Ranking Democrat on the Ag Committee should know. He was testifying as a paid lobbyist for the horse slaughter industry.

Other public relations challenged industries represented were United Egg Producers, the National Pork Producers Council, Sonoma Foie Gras and the National Association for Biomedical Research.

Also represented were the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, the National Milk Producers Federation, the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, Farm Sanctuary, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and public relations firm, Center for Consumer Freedom.

The hearing on animal welfare and agriculture was scheduled by Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.), the new House Ag Committee Chairman, at the urging of the seven million member Humane Society of the United States. Except for a meeting last year about horse slaughter, the Subcommittee hasn't met over a farm animal issue since 1989 when it looked at veal calf treatment.

In a May 28 editorial, the New York Times accused House and Senate Agriculture committees of "cozy ties to big agriculture."

On the plate, pun intended, were discussions of gestation crates--outlawed in Florida and Arizona and dropped by pork giant Smithfield foods--veal crates, battery cages and other confinement systems and a provision to include poultry under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act instead of the Poultry Products Inspection Act which only requires the "good commercial practices in the slaughter of poultry" that KFC has popularized.

But exchanges soon devolved into veracity bowls.

Not only did pork industry representatives dispute HSUS President Wayne Pacelle's claim that a mad cow like disease could afflict pigs, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), ranking Republican on the Ag Committee and its former Chairman bluntly labeled Pacelle's charge that mad cow disease has already gotten into the US beef supply, "Wrong."

But former Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman confirmed to CNN on Dec. 23, 2003 that meat from a US cow found to have mad cow disease had "gone into other processing plants from the initial slaughter plant." And on January 3 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that 11 restaurants in nine California counties had served the meat to unwitting diners. Identities of the food outlets were protected thanks to a state law.

Both horse slaughter lobbyist Charlie Stenholm and Rep. Goodlatte had blocked a ban on processing downers for human consumption earlier in 2003, assuring the public there was no health risk.

Mad cow is an animal protection issue because its spread is facilitated by processing sick and crippled downer cattle for human food, often dragged to slaughter say activists.

While some lawmakers said they saw no need for the Ag Committee hearings--"producers are vigorously addressing animal welfare issues," Subcommittee Chairman Leonard Boswell (D-Ia) assured the group; "Farmers and ranchers, not activists, should be dictating animal husbandry practices," agreed Ranking Member Robin Hayes (R-NC)--others impugned animal protectionists.

Rep. Steve King (R-Ia), known for taking pro-cockfighting and dog fighting positions, felt compelled to declare his favorite meal "a steak and a beer" and blame former NBA player Bill Walton's knee problems on lack of meat.

And then there was David Martosko of the Center for Consumer Freedom.

"Congress could require U.S. farmers to supply every pig, chicken, duck, and cow with private rooms, daily rubdowns, video iPods, and organic meals catered by Wolfgang Puck," said the Director of Research for the controversial group which defends alcohol, junk food and even cigarettes against legislative restrictions in a kind of the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend arrangement. "But even this wouldn't satisfy activists who actually believe farm animals have the 'right' not to be eaten."

[Another the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend group is the Animal Agriculture Alliance whose Executive Vice President, Kay Johnson, told North American Agricultural Journalists in April, "improvements in animal welfare should be based on reason, science and experience, not on the opinions of activists who have absolutely no vested interest in farm animals." ("Your honor, the witness has no vested interest in the property!!")]

But Dan Murphy of meatingplace hopes Martosko's discrediting of activists doesn't "represent the industry's primary strategy."

"When an industry, or a company, is forced to be reactive and continually defend its business model, the chance of successfully moving the needle on public acceptance or understanding is minimal," he writes on the cattlenetwork website. Especially because food consumers "expect the companies who ask for their business to make reasonable changes."

And public sentiment, unlike the Ag Committee hearings, won't likely die in committee.

Ro Thank you so much for that article, we here in Texas are glad that they listened.

Now maybe, with the Texas Legislature voting it down K B Hutchison, will give in to her constiutents and vote yes or even co-sponsor, what a change that would be for the Senator from Texas to hear the voters on this anti-slaughter issue. Must fax her this information.

Not much hope for John Cornyn, but I have heard he is on his way out anyway (another reason) but now the side for anti-slaughter can join the group getting rid of him, too. That will be my vote anyway.

This note from the Urgent feedlot rescue 5/30

NOTE: The feedlot owner has been in a buying frenzy the past few weeks, paying top dollar for horses. He has been very reluctant to allow us to rescue any. Closure of the plants in Texas and Illinois have had little impact on him, since he sends horses to a Canadian slaughterhouse. In fact, recently he has increased the numbers he is shipping to 1-2 truckloads per week. The closure of the U.S. plants has likely put pressure on Canada and Mexico to increase production of horse meat.

God please - stop this madness.
