    Barbaro Updates: 296

    updates are now here.

Update 1991: If you appreciate horse racing, or want to appreciate horse racing, please watch this video of the tongue-wagging Authorized and jubilant Franke Dettori: Epsom Derby 2007.

Update 1990: Real Lace made her 2007 debut this afternoon at Pimlico. She finished second, after leading most of the way. The race was originally scheduled for the turf, but due to the wet weather was switched to the sloppy dirt. She cooled out well, and will hopefully move forward from this nice effort. Race chart.

Update 1989: Hard Spun will be joining Street Sense at Darley: Street Sense, Hard Spun to Stand at Darley Upon Retirement.

Update 1988: A quick reminder, Dr. Richardson will be appearing on HRTV tonight, at 9 pm eastern. DVDs of the show will be available at some point in the future.

Update 1987: Perfect Drift did not fire in the Californian yesterday, nor did Kip Deville who was being wheeled back very quickly after losing to The Tin Man last week: Buzzards Bay Scratches Out Californian Win. Lets hope Buzzards Bay, a previous winner of the Santa Anita Derby, can maintain this form in the Hollywood Gold Cup later this month.

The Belmont has a new entrant, the Digger: Little Known Digger Now Likely for Belmont. This is a result of Street Sense's defection. Slew's Tizzy completed his final work in preparation for The Belmont and Hard Spun shipped to Belmont Park yesterday: Slew's Tizzy Breezes; 'He's Ready,' Says Fox, excerpt:

Slew's Tizzy had his final major pre-Belmont Stakes workout Saturday morning at The Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington, Ky. The colt breezed a half mile over the facility's conventional dirt track for trainer Gregory Fox.

"I got him in :49 flat," Fox said. "I worked him from the mile pole to the half mile pole at the end of a two mile gallop. It was very impressive."

Slew's Tizzy is one of six confirmed starters for Saturday's 139th running of the $1 million Belmont Stakes (gr. I) for 3-year-olds at 1 1/2 miles.

Slew's Tizzy has racked up back-to-back stakes victories since April 21, taking the Lexington (gr. II) at Keeneland and Lone Star Derby (gr. III). Fox says he hasn't changed the colt's training regimen heading into the third and final leg of the Triple Crown.

"We've pretty much done the same thing with him," he said. "His work today, that's what we did before Texas."

Update 1986: It looks like Street Sense is going to be retired to the breeding shed after this year's campaign: Street Sense sold to Darley.

Update 1985: Delightful Kiss, who beat Chelokee in an allowance race in Gulfstream early this year, won the Ohio Derby for his first stakes victory: Delightful Kiss Plants Ohio Derby Upset.

Here is Sue McMullen's Epsom Derby report in The Sunday Herald: Star jockey shines in dream ride.

Update 1984: Authorized goes into the history books and Frankie Dettori break's his Derby duck: DETTORI SEIZES THE MOMENT.

Update 1983: It does seem summer is here. We have been locked into some warm weather for a while now. Fair Hill was beautiful this morning. I had four to ride. First was Linda's Pistol, who was breezing 5/8ths with Tim on Whip Smart. We breezed on the Tapeta track, I was on the outside. I was cruising to about the 3/16ths and then came off the bridle and had to push Pistol out down the lane to keep him close to Whip Smart. Both actually worked nicely and Pistol kept running despite getting a little tired (it was his first 5/8ths). Of the four of us, I think I was tiredest of us all! Second out was Gator Nation. He galloped a mile and a half on the Tapeta track. He went nicely on his own. Tim was on Real Lace jogging around the dirt track. An easy day for her as she makes her 2007 debut tomorrow. Next was Nonpariel, we went to the dirt with Tim on Quick Quest. We took them both to the gate to stand, and they both stood very well and relaxed. Nonpariel seems in good order after her first race last saturday. She galloped around nicely after standing in the gate. Finally I had Nautical Agent. She went to the Tapeta track to gallop a mile and a half. She was pretty sharp today galloping, she must have thought she should be breezing. Any, at one point I had to change my hands (I had too long a hold of her) and when doing that it made her a little keener, but at least then I had a little more leverage and could settle her down. She "high-stepped" it all the way home. Another pleasant morning's work.

Update 1982: First run in 1780, the Epsom Derby is run today. Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore team have eight entries: BALLYDOYLE PLAY THE NUMBERS GAME (remember they lost Holy Roman Emporer at the beginning of the year to a stud career). Many think it might be Frankie Dettori's year, he has yet to win a Derby: AUTHORIZED TEAM RARING TO GO. Either way, this mile and a half race, on an undulating turf track, still attracts a huge amount of excitement in Europe.

Back home a couple of runners of note are appearing in California, Perfect Drift (Perfect Drift Leads Contentious Californian) and Lava Man (Lava Man gets back to work.) It is also the Ohio Derby today: Cowtown Cat Expected to Rebound in Ohio Derby. An interest day of racing for sure!

Edit: misread the wikipedia entry or the date of the first running of the Epsom Derby. Thanks Liz! Note, Lava Man was working, not racing.

    Good Morning,

Just finished reading today's posts. Wow! Lots of great stuff. Have a few kudos:

    Susan W @ 1:57pm: Well said!
Cal @ 2:47pm: I agree 100%. Failure is NOT an option!
Donna in Canada @3:20pm: Right on! These horses ARE wanted!
Glenda in NE PA @ 4:28pm: Absolutely! We turn a setback (we are never defeated!) into a victory!
Leslie in MN @ 7:39pm: OUTSTANDING! Ferdinand is smiling.
Harriette Brillianthawk @ 5:26pm: I'm with you! AND mad as hell for many of the same reasons.

One thing does bother me a little. Some of us are talking of taking some of our efforts secret. I think that is a terrible idea. TERRIBLE! Secrecy and deception are only tools for the enemy. We MUST be open in what we do. If we're not open, then the enemies argument becomes "See? They're hiding. They must be doing something wrong. We don't hide. We're reviled for what we do, but we're open and honest about it." Secrecy leads to suspicion of wrongdoing. We have nothing to hide.
Besides, the rescue efforts can be used to strengthen our argument that these horses are NOT unwanted! We openly show the world who we are and that we want these animals!
Yes, having an "open playbook" makes our fight more difficult. But, doing the right thing the right way is not an easy road. I mean no disrespect to anyone; we are angry, frustrated and hurt.

We are strong. We are family. We are the voices crying out in the wilderness for those who cannot speak for themselves.

We are soldiers in battle. Some of us are, or were, uniformed soldiers; we know battle. We know how to win!

Take this weekend for some R&R, rest and relax. Find your peace with our travails. None of us are alone in this war. We will march to VICTORY!
Monday we will inundate Congress with phone calls, faxes, emails, and everything else with righteous anger! Shock and awe! There is strenght in unity, and united we are.

For Ferdinand. For Exceller. For Barbaro. For Ho'pats Mia. For Fitch. For every horse on a truck or a track.

    With love to my famblee.

Sophie, FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. I've been trying to remember the movie where this line was used. I believe it was Apollo 13. Harriette was dead on with her post. I'm glad to see some people step up and go to bat for her.

    Hey Cal,
I think you're right, "Apollo 13" sounds right to me. Or was it "The Right Stuff?" lol

What Harriette said struck me. We're out here doing hard, emotionally draining work every day. Yet, all we get from these "leaders" are platitudes and praise. I'd love to see the Jackson's in DC on the 20th&21st, and Mrs. Chenery, et al. lobbying with us! Where are our catered lunches to say "thank you?" Sure is frustrating.

Harriette's incredible. She always has the right thing to say.

It's not that old!! The Derby was first run in 1780 - won by Diomed. Here's hoping Frankie can do it at his 15th attempt. There were lots of tears for Henry Cecil's record-equalling eigth Oaks win yesterday. He got three cheers more than once and there was hardly a dry eye anywhere. The only thing that would top that at Epsom today is for Frankie to win on odds-on favourite Authorized. The course is sold out, with I think, one hundred thousand expected to attend.

Posted by: Liz (UK) at June 2, 2007 11:41 AM

I think the confusion is that the first recorded race meeting at Epsom was held in 1661.

Posted by: Liz (UK) at June 2, 2007 11:49 AM

    Hay guys,

I know we've had plenty of bad news yesterday, and we are frustrated about what has happened lately. But the slaughter of horses will end. Several years ago there were 15 plants operating. Now we are down to one which is hanging by a thread. We ARE winning. I talked with the Tarrant County assisstant DA in charge of the Beltex case yesterday. They have until June 16th to try to convince the Supreme Court that they really should heard their appeal. If that fails, they are pretty much dead in the water. So is Dallas Crown. The only way they can reopen is if the TX legislature pases a law allowing it again. They don't meet for 2 years. They may try again if the federal bills are not passed, but after being closed for 2 years, and with all the lawsuits that would follow if a law were to pass, I think they are closed forever. Yes horse slaughter will end. It is only a matter of time.

We will continue to fight and we will win. Think of all the people who have been at this for years. We are the calvery and their reinforcements. So let's engage and get this done!

    BTW. I love you guys!!

    ***IN THE NAME OF BARBARO***

I think when we get discouraged, it's good to remember the reason this site exists and the reason why we're trying to save horses and make tracks safer. As the caller exlaimed in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, "It's all Barbaro!"

Barbaro did not give up when the going got BEYOND tough. He just kept trying to get better until physical problems made it impossible for him to survive with a quality of life.

I think each of us should just take a few quiet moments today, then pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off...then get busy again. That's what Barbaro would want.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Tim & Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I've only skimmed yesterday's posts and I probably missed someone else saying this, but I suspect that our high-profile people in this fight (the Jacksons et al) are working very hard in invisible ways to get this legislation passed. I have faith that we will win this war despite the seemingly negative outcome of the most recent battle. Big picture here, folks. I really liked Shelley A's suggestion to take a deep breath and take some time off this weekend.

To insure that we leave no FOB behind......!!! LOL!!

We have been collecting money for gifts to Michael Matz, Peter Brette, and Chelokee to celebrate the winning of the Barbaro Stakes.
If anyone still wants to donate, there is a second round of gifts that are yet to be presented.
The FOBs have already presented gift baskets to Michael, Peter, and ..of course...Chelokee, in addition to rose bushes for outside planting. But due to the great FOB response, there will be more presented in celebration of this great moment in horse racing!

If somehow you missed this opportunity and would still like to participate, please contact Kennett Florist with your donation. The deadline for donations is one week from today, Friday, June 8.

    LOST IN THE FOG TRIBUTE

Sunday June 10, at Golden Gate Fields, LOST IN THE FOG STAKES OF $50,000 will be held. GEVA is planning a booth to raise funds in Memory of the Champ. If anyone would like to donate to GEVA, Pam could use the help. I will be attending and would like to take any donations from FOB's to surprise her. She does not like to ask for help. On that note, I would be happy to take any donations I can gather in such a short notice to her on Sunday. My mailing address is Nona VanDamme

    ### I have been wondering for some time--where are the "Big Guns" and why, during this Triple Crown season, with all of the press and media coverage of horse racing and Barbaro and mentions of the work of the FOBs are they not taking this opportunity to get their names and our cause OUT THERE?
    T. Boone and Madeline Pickens--WHERE ARE YOU?
    Willie Nelson--WHERE ARE YOU?
    Bo Derek--WHERE ARE YOU?
A few years ago a "coffee table" book was published showing celebrities with the favorite horses. Robert Redford was on the cover. I'll find a copy at a bookstore today and make note of the notables, because I'd like to know--WHERE ARE YOU?

Those of us here in the trenches, the grass-roots effort to end slaughter WILL GET IT DONE, but it would sure be nice to have a few folks with the name recognition, bucks and "star power" to make it in front of a TV camera working on this issue even a fraction of what we are.

Posted by: Dawn in Omaha at June 2, 2007 2:05 PM

    i AGREE.
We need some big star power to help us bring this cause--and the attendant media --to the halls of Congress....people like Robert Redford, Julia Roberts, Cheryl Crowe, Oprah i think too.
They all have much pulicized LOVE for their gazillions of acres and their ranches with HORSES.

I don't think we will get help from the racing industry. There are many--i hope--who are working behind the scenes...like Stacy Hancock and I am SURE the Jacksons...gotta be.

But we need some high profile help. Let's put our heads together and see who else we can think of...and then get those letters out. IT CAN'T HURT.

We need a spokesperson...if not several...we need PSA's like the networks do to promote safe sex, drug use, etc etc...

Apart from that though, I have just finished poop scooping the turnout yard...12 greys and two lurchers here today. Two boarders---whom I fostered, and love to pieces and two foster dogs...one of which thinks it's OK to walk up to a table and chew on the corner. That gets the kaibosh (sp_ fast...but he's only a week off the track...and a GREAT big black mush-hound.

Anyhow. Have to figure out this new airconditioner....or I will scream and put the old one in for now..That, as y ou can imagine, involves a great deal of lugging and wrestling and I am already SO HOT.....

Love to all the FoBs; Shelley is right, do something nice for yourselves this weekend. New callers, call those answering machines~! No fear of flying in that scenario..

    So:
    I AM HERE.

    ### Kansas rescue (and I'm sure a bunch of others on the threads today, folks, if you can lend a hand). This one sounds like a sure deal at $300 per head. . .Let's hope so! I need to know some sweet souls are saved this weekend.

PSAs are being worked on, but not sure of the status there. Once I get my hands on them, they'll be emailed to all the Clear Channel stations--for whatever that's worth!

Jonna--give your hounds a hug from me.

Everyone try to have a great Saturday and I'll check in this afternoon. YOU ALL ARE AWESOME!

    SPOKESPEOPLE/CELEBS AND AGENTS

We'll probably need to work though agents....and that's a pain. I had to do this a couple of times when I was in Advertising Account Land. Let me dig around...ask some of my old buddies which way to approach this...

Posted by: jonna at June 2, 2007 2:28 PM

I wonder if Oprah Winfrey would be a good person to contact. She seems to be an animal lover...might even do a show on the senseless slaughter of our horses.

Heres an very unique story about another great horse sired by the mighty stallion, Dynaformer, Barbaro's, sire, thought you FOB's might find intresting.

An even dozen, including seven graded winners, are entered Saturday for the $250,0000 Californian (gr. II) at Hollywood Park, led by 8-year-old Perfect Drift, a winner of $4.6 million in his lengthy career.

Perfect Drift will aim for his 12th career victory in the Californian, final major stepping-stone to the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) on June 30.

Perfect Drift, who finished third in the 2002 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) behind War Emblem and Proud Citizen, will be starting at his 13th track. The Kentucky-bred son of Dynaformer, who has started in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) five straight years.

See Patty in Dallas's post above...Look how far we've come. The process is glacial, but the ultimate goal -- A bill to amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes -- is closer than it's ever been.

Remember: Even though there's just been a period where the slaughter plants have been closed in the US, slaughter itself hasn't stopped -- the horses were just transported elsewhere.

Press-wise, the people mentioned above are as committed to anti-slaughter as they've ever been. And the Cavel case will be played out in a major market, with major press coverage...so many more people are about to get clued in to America's Dirty Little Secret.

    Cheers,

I've said it so many times you MUST be tired of hearing it, but we would NOT have to worry about setbacks such as TRO's, we would NOT have to worry about raising thousands of dollars for emergency rescues and then being crushed when the efforts are unsuccessful, we would NOT have to worry about who has infiltrated our home...if only EVERYONE on the board and EVERYONE on the forum would work for the ultimate passage of HR503/S311! That is the ONLY action that will permanently protect our beloved horses!

DO NOT DESPAIR...think how many mighty armies have lost major battles, BUT WON THE WAR! We have to toughen up and not let setbacks derail or demoralize us - WE ARE A MIGHTY ARMY HERE TO WIN THE WAR!

Please take a few minutes this weekend to leave voice mails for those Senators who previously sponsored, but have not yet done so...be sure to mention S311! We need less Senate sponsors than House sponsors at current count, so let's blitz those senators and get this bill onto the floor for a vote!

    Godd Morning Dear Barbaro Family,

I just finished reading all of yesterday's posts. I AM HERE! Although, for the most part, I tend to stay in the background. One of the "Silent Ones" as Harriette calls us.

As with many of us, Barbaro was/is a life changing experience. And the days & months which have followed his death have only made us stronger, closer.

We have grown in many ways. We have had huge successes. I love looking at all the new foals born to rescued mares on the DB. I have printed many of their pictures to remind me not to become complacent until slaughter is defeated.

We have also had days like yesterday. Discouraging, disheartening. Yet there is something good to be said about yesterday. It has raised our consciuosness as individuals & as a group. It has made us ANGRY. Channeled anger is good! It has caused us to refocus & renew our energies. It has given us a new & stronger determination to succeed. It has brought us back together. AND WE WILL SUCCEED!

Angela, do you know the name of the judge in the Cavel case? I think we should innundate his/her office with both phone calls & letters & maybe a copy of a press releas about one of our foals (maybe Little Willie) born to a rescued mare. While it it true, they don't always read their mail, if there is enough of it, they will be made aware of it.

Maybe we should try to contact a local TV station & send all the letters there. If we all mailed our letters within a certain period fo time; we might generate enough interest for thme to run a news story & present the letters to the judge (hopefully on camera). It would show our strength & our determination.

In all likelihood, we won't get to talk to the judge if we call them. And who knows if the information from our phone calls even gets passed on? But it sure would be fun to tie up their phone lines for a few hours!

I fully agree with the idea of contacting some celebrities to get their support. As antiquated as the mail system is; maybe a concerted effort, where we all send the same letter, with the same pictures, they just might make it into the hands of a celebrity. It's certainly worth a try.

Although there was much to be sad about yesterday, I think we have come out of it ready to dig in our heels & go into battle together with renewed fervor & determination.

God Bless you Barbaro. Our work will go on in your name. God Bless us, the Barbaro Nation.

The latest on Andrew Lakeman, from Jerry Bossert in today's NY Daily News:

"IMPROVING: Jockey Andrew Lakeman's condition has been upgraded from 'critical' to 'guarded,' North Shore University Hospital spokesman Terry Lynam said. Lakeman was injured in a two-horse spill at Belmont on May 25, suffering 'severe spine trauma,' said Hayward, the NYRA president who was allowed to see the 32-year-old last week. Lynam wouldn't provide more details, only saying that Lakeman's injuries are 'not considered life-threatening.'"

I just e-mailed Oprah. I have to tell you it wasn't easy to write all that needed to be addressed in less than 2000 characters. I had to go back and deleted some lines, over and over again. I believe Oprah is based in Illinois. Any body else want to e-mail her? I can send you a copy of what I wrote. E-mail me if you would like it. That way you can address other important points that I couldn't get in, so that all points get across.

Please. You lobby politicians, you don't lobby judges. Let's let the system work. Judges are not swayed by public opinion or emotion -- they just interpret the law, and they do not look kindly on people trying to influence their decision. This is understandably difficult, but right now we cannot get involved in the judicial process.

Once more, regarding press: This is playing out in Chicago, the second city. The local paper, The Chicago Tribune is already on it.

Instead, make those calls and send those letters to your federal legislators. As Mrs. Jackson said "Let's end horse slaughter for once and for all by getting the federal legislation passed. It can't be ended one rescue at a time."

COVER STORY from The Washington Post.com

    A Dark Horse Tale
30 Years Before Barbaro, Another Legendary Run Ended in Heartbreak

    By Leonard Shapiro
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Sunday, June 3, 2007; Page Y05

The nation mourned when the great Barbaro was euthanized less than nine months after winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby. Many also wept three decades ago after the undefeated filly Ruffian went hoofbeat to hoofbeat with 1975 Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure in a match race one fateful Sunday afternoon at Belmont Park.

That storied race, which ended in tragedy 600 yards from the starting gate, became the inspiration for "Ruffian," a bittersweet made-for-TV movie that airs the same day as the Belmont Stakes, both on ABC.

William Nack, 66, a longtime Sports Illustrated writer who lives in the District, served as a consultant and is a main character in the film. As a young reporter for the Long Island newspaper Newsday, Nack covered most of Ruffian's short-lived career.

It's merely coincidence that the Ruffian story airs a year after Barbaro's plight: The film had been in development for several years.

"Ruffian" follows the filly's career through her early training all the way to one of racing's darkest days, when she shattered bones in her right foreleg and had to be put down less than 12 hours later.

The film captures the allure and backstretch mystique of the racetrack, as well as the often quirky characters who populate it, including Ruffian's crusty trainer, Hall of Famer Frank Whiteley Jr., played by actor-writer Sam Shepard.

Shepard, who breeds horses on his Kentucky farm, didn't meet with Whiteley but watched archival film and television interviews with the trainer and also spoke to some of his associates.

Nack said Shepard really crawled into Whiteley's skin.

"Frank Whiteley was known as an irascible, difficult guy to deal with among the press," Nack said.

Once, Nack said, when Whiteley was hosing down a horse, "I kept bugging him for an interview and he finally got tired of it and turned the hose on me. But truly, I never had a bad moment with him. You just had to pick your spots."

Veteran actor Frank Whaley, who portrays Nack, spent several days with the sportswriter to get an idea of his mannerisms, his typing style and his speech patterns before shooting began.

"The more I read about the story, the more we learned how much Bill was influenced by the horse and how he influenced the story," executive producer Orly Adelson said.

"He gave us an outside look from someone who actually participated in the story. He was amazing in the process, a part of every decision. He knew how it looked and how it felt, and that was a great advantage for all of us."

The movie was filmed over a six-week period in 2006 in Shreveport, La., with several scenes also shot at Belmont Park in New York. Five horses were used to portray Ruffian, all of them geldings.

Nack's character serves as a narrator, and some of the dialogue in the film comes from his Newsday stories, particularly his description of Ruffian:

"She looked like an outside linebacker . . . with muscles on her eyebrows," Nack wrote. "She was built like a watch, a study in balance . . . with a neck and head so refined, like a drawing by da Vinci."

One of the film's more compelling scenes comes shortly after Ruffian's breakdown. Nack dashed across the track that day, and in the movie version, he narrowly escapes being trampled by Foolish Pleasure, who kept galloping all the way to the finish line to complete the match race and collect the winner's check of $225,000.

"I didn't even think about the other horse, but here came Foolish Pleasure," Nack said. "I could feel the wind of the horse and I heard [jockey Braulio] Baeza yell. I think he yelled my name -- 'Hey, Bill.' I just know the hair stood up on the back of my neck."

Nack made it to the other side of the track and reached Ruffian before her trainer, being driven around the racing oval in a car, was able to get there. Nack saw the veterinarian approach, "and he had blood all over his hands."

"I asked him what happened, and he told me she'd shattered her sesamoids," Nack said. " 'Why all the blood?' I asked. He said the bone had just exploded out."

The film re-creates how surgeons at the track hospital tried to save Ruffian long into that night.

The horse began thrashing about when she was coming out of anesthesia, reinjuring her foreleg and also fracturing her elbow. She had to be euthanized.

Ruffian was buried on the Belmont infield the next day, and a plaque marks her grave at the historic racetrack.

Nack, who has written a memoir, "Ruffian: A Racetrack Romance" (ESPN Books, 2007), also was on hand at the 2006 Preakness the afternoon Barbaro broke down.

"It was deja vu," he said. "Barbaro almost made it, and you'd like to think that Ruffian would have had a helluva better shot at surviving today."

We must try to initiate legislation, in all ot the states that border Illinois, that would prohibit transport of slaughterbound horses, out of or through thoses states. Huge fines for violation, with confiscation of horses and vehicles would land-lock Cavel, and dry up the supply of victims.

To get this done might be take awhile...however, it would work.

KathyK's suggestion is verrrrry verrrry good...lets co-ordinate, yes?

Harriette, I am still here. I agree with most of what you said yesterday. I think a lot of us are emotionally tired. Words of encouragment help. We may ans will lose a few battles but we will win the war. As to the post about Oprah that would be great. However, I wonder if they would do it due to the violence and ,of course, that is exactly what people need to see. Heaven forbid the horses keep going to Mexico. We need widespread media attention showing it like it is. Most people are not even aware of this needless slaughter of Gods cratures. God bless the people on the front line that take care of the rescue horses. How tired and emotionally drained they must be. We must pray for them.

Patty in Dallas - I agree with you we will WIN, we just have to keep our eyes focused on the goal!! Have COURAGE to forge ahead and stay UNITED as we stay the course. "United we stand divided we fall". It's called, True Grit!!! And we have got it, Barbaro showed us the way by example, now lets keep going.

Also, I wonder what method is being used to ship the product from the horses that are going to Mexico, to Europe??? I thought American Airlines was no longer shipping. Is it UPS or DHL??? Who ever, I say we also let them know that the 76-80% of Americans that are against slaughter will not be so likely to do business with them when they know who is taking over from American or who ever. Lets do a campaign of faxing, phoning and e-mailing who ever this is. I am going to try to research this.

Oh by the way I e-mailed Oprah about 8 months ago and go no answer what so ever. Maybe if lots of us e-mailed it would bring her attention to this. But my 1 e-mail did nothing. Stop and think how many hundreds or thousands of requests she must get each day.

    ###
Jonna - I agree with you, even wondered when the news reported several weeks ago that T. Boone Pickens had donated so many many millions to a college (now do not get me wrong I think education is very important and he has a right to do what he wants with his money but if I had had a wish ), why couldn't he have donated even a little bit (only 1 million or so,LOL) to the anti-slaughter fight (maybe he does but it is sure needed now, as a final death blow to the pro fighters, and to our elected officials that this is over for Americans) at this point I would not be averse to buying (since the lobbyistist are paying someone anyway) some votes under the table if we had the capital (well not really)to bring this horror to an end.

Sometimes, I get the feeling that some of the "power people" are all talk just for the sake of "looks". After all they are really just human beings with all the problems we have in our lives and that can sometimes bog you down. They are not magic and for all the people that are "fans" of theirs and would listen there are probally as many people who are not "fans" and would not listen to their opinion. Maybe their "celeb" status works against anyone paying attention to them, especially where the Congress is concerned. You know it is a "power struggle" sometimes about who has the "most power".

    Sorry this is so long.

Due to popular demand, I am going to relate to you what happened to us last night. I emailed the story to a few of you, and you felt it deserved to be “published.”

Before I begin, you have to understand a “silver lining.” The silver lining refers to the good part of a storm cloud. The storm cloud represents bad, or evil. I always look for the “silver lining” when dealing with the slaughter issue, due to the roller coaster nature of this battle. I have to find some good in some of the bad in order to get through it.

My daughter didn’t understand the expression. I imagine most of you do.

Here is our experience from last night:

We had a rough night here last night. All of our animals (all thirteen of them, if you count the duck!) are fine. But a dog was hit by a car in front of our house. I HEARD it from inside. I ran out, but the car had kept right on going. I was SO mad. At first, I could not find the dog. I had heard a very quick yelp from her when she was hit, and my dogs started barking like crazy. She staggered out from just beside my truck. I called to her and she came right to me, and then flopped over onto my feet. I yelled for Heidi, who came running, and she stayed with the dog so I could go in the house to call the humane society.

A beautiful pit bull with a collar, but no tags. Heidi and I did all we could, which was not much, as we could not move her. We comforted her and she wagged her tail a few times. The humane society said they would be right there, and they did come fairly quickly, about 20 minutes, but the poor dog died just before their ambulance arrived.

Just when you think there is NO good news, I realized that my daughter and I were BOTH in tears, just caring about a dog we didn't know. I told Heidi I was glad she could cry about it, because a lot of people wouldn't care that much. LIKE THE GUY WHO HIT THE DOG AND KEPT RIGHT ON GOING !

So the good news, for me, is that Heidi "Gets it." I know that the next generation WILL have others who get it, too.

    The silver lining is there.

There's been a lot of talk today about contacting those with 'clout'. Yesterday, I thought of Erin Brokovich. Remember the Julia Roberts movie?? I have gone to Erin's website & the following is her philosophy. She also states she reads EVERY letter she receives. What does everyone think about writing to her & asking for help/advice?? Is it worth a shot??? I think the fact that Cavel was/is contaminating the water in DeKalb might be the fact that prompts a response from her. After all, she DID take on the mighty & WIN!

    ***ERIN BROKOVICH'S PHILOSOPHY***

    Philosophy
    June 2, 2007
People ask me all the time what I think and what my opinion is.
Well, here are a few of my thoughts and beliefs:

Everyone believes, because of the movie, that I am an environmental activist. I am often referred to as the environmentalist with cleavage.
I do care a great deal about the environment but my real work and my greatest challenge is trying to overcome deceits that end up jeopardizing public health and safety.

I am an advocate for awareness, the truth, and a person's right to know. I believe that in the absence of the truth, all of us stand helpless to defend ourselves, our families and our health, which is the greatest gift we have. As with everything, some people always go too far, too far to the right, too far to the left, and this is true of environmentalism and now, in many instances, our issues fall on a deaf ear.

Often times we don’t think about or worry about or understand what is happening to another until it happens to us. Deceits have no boundaries. Disease doesn’t recognize the color of our skin or our political parties affiliation. When it comes to cover-ups and destruction of our environment, we our all up for grabs.

A lot of times I am motivated or become very inspired by a cliché. They make me think and more often than not can be true. For example, "an informed citizen is the only true repository of the American will" - Thomas Jefferson. Oh how right he was.
I believe that our perception of things become our reality. It is how you choose to see yourself, your character, that can actually determine your fate.

Most people don't know that my favorite movie is not "Erin Brockovich" but "Pay It Forward". All of us should pay it forward but not with the expectation of seeing a reward, that is not why we do it. Pay if forward because it is the right thing to do, reward or not.

If you follow your heart, if you listen to your gut, and if you extend your hand to help another, not for any agenda, but for the sake of humanity, you are going to find the truth.

Nancy in CT is 100% correct!!! WE NEED to get that legislation PASSED!!! WHEN we get the legislation passed in the very near future.....ALL MONIES CAN BE SPENT TO AID RESCUES....think of the truly powerful impact that would have on equine welfare in general!! We could have put our $350,000 into expanding and updating the rescues for example!!!!Wouldn't that be a gratifying experience ???? So well it is wonderful in the interim to save as many as we can ...the ONLY ANSWER to SAVING THEM ALL is....PASSING THE LEGISLATION!!!!!

The enemy has a divide and conquer mentality so it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that WE DON'T BUY INTO THEIR PHILOSOPHY!!!! WE ARE IN THIS TO WIN!!!!!

    BELIEVE !!!!

Your post is a source of optimism and hope - and a call to arms to get this done. Thanks.

    I BELIEVE.

    # Dawn, I know Bo Derek met with the Illinois Governor recently regarding the anti-slaughter bill passed by the state legislature - so I think she is very active. Don't know about the others. There's a chance they are working actively but not getting press coverage.

    Aloha,
I've spoken with Stephanie and have agreed to head a call group in the islands. Are there any other folks from Hawaii on the board? "Snowbirds" and other Pacific Islanders are also welcome. Just drop a line at sentz@hawaii.rr.com

I'd also like to thank all of those from the discussion board who send such kind words and loving thoughts at the death of my old, beloved Irish Setter Tucker on Preakness Saturday. I truly appreciate all of your support. I take some comfort in knowing that he is once again able to do his favorite thing, to "run like the wind". I even have hopes that he has some equine company on his runs. Again, thank you. Your kindness is greatly appreciated

The Chicago NBC station / channel 5 did 2 pieces on Cavel, I saw them and I live in the NW. So this suggestion was not made without president! Don't forget all the info that is scattered thru out this website, not just the horses, but illegal waste? drug smugling, plus illegal aliens, forgien owned companies that don't want to abide by our laws. As the early post pointed out a lot of people close their minds if they think it is all/only about the horses. However there is so much more that could be used to gain national attention and save the horses in the process. Cindy

Maybe we need to unleash China on the slaughter folks.....

Now we need to be concerned re: our toothpaste...

FDA: Throw away toothpaste made in China By KEVIN FREKING, Associated Press Writer
Sat Jun 2, 5:59 AM ET

The government warned consumers on Friday to avoid using toothpaste made in China because it may contain a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze. Out of caution, the Food and Drug Administration said, people should throw away toothpaste with labeling that says it was made in China. The FDA is concerned that these products may contain diethylene glycol.

The agency is not aware of any poisoning from toothpaste in the United States, but it did find the antifreeze ingredient in a shipment at the U.S. border and at two retail stores: a Dollar Plus store in Miami and a Todo A Peso store in Puerto Rico.

Officials said they are primarily concerned about toothpaste sold at bargain retail outlets. The ingredient in question, called DEG, is used as a lower-cost sweetener and thickening agent. The highest concentration of the chemical found in toothpaste so far was between 3 percent and 4 percent of the product's overall weight.

"It does not belong in toothpaste even in small concentrations," said the FDA's Deborah M. Autor.

The FDA increased its scrutiny of toothpaste made in China because of reports of contamination in several countries, including Panama.

The agency is particularly concerned about chronic exposure to DEG in children and in people with kidney or liver disease.

Agency officials said they had no estimate of how many tubes of tainted toothpaste might have made it into the U.S.

"Our concern today is potentially about all toothpaste that comes in from China," Autor said. "Our estimate is that China makes up about $3.3 million of the $2 billion U.S. toothpaste market."

The agency also issued an import alert Friday for all dental products containing DEG. The alert means toothpaste from China will be stopped at the border, she said.

Companies that make brands previously found with DEG will have to prove the toothpaste is free of the chemical before it's allowed into the country. Meanwhile, all other brands of Chinese-made toothpaste will be stopped for testing, something the agency has been doing since May 23.

The import alert posted by the government says DEG has been improperly used in a variety of sedatives, syrups and cough medicines worldwide. Most recently, a cough syrup containing DEG resulted in more than 40 deaths in Panama last September.

The alert says the agency found DEG in three products manufactured by Goldcredit International Trading in China. The products are Cooldent Fluoride, Cooldent Spearmint and Cooldent ICE. Analysis of the products revealed they contained between 3 percent and 4 percent DEG.

The agency also found the chemical in one product manufactured by Suzhou City Jinmao Daily Chemical Co. in China. Analysis of that product, Shir Fresh Mint Fluoride Paste, found it contained about 1 percent DEG.

China's food safety problems have in recent months become a matter of international concern, a situation reflected in trade talks between Chinese and U.S. officials in Washington last week.

Most notably, on March 15, FDA learned that certain pet foods were sickening and killing cats and dogs. FDA found contaminants in vegetable proteins imported into the United States from China and used as ingredients in pet food.

I have been skimming the posts, and I didn't seem to see it, but someone may have already posted this, but HBO is doing a special on Barbaro Wed. 6/6/07, I think at 10:00 pm. I can't wait. If someone has already posted this info, I apologize. I was just so excited when I saw beautiful Barbaro. I think there may be a movie about Ruffian coming on soon, alas, I need to look more on the net to see when as I am curious to watch it since her story was similar to beautiful Barbaro's. My heart breaks for both of them.

Hope the horse slaughter stops soon, sorry to hear about the reopening of the Cavel place. Makes me sick to my stomach. I will do anything I can like email senators here in Tenn.

I love you, beautiful Barbaro!!!! I miss you soooooo much!:)

Love the unity and cohesiveness here. We WILL win!

Otherlyn: Great idea. Let's do it!!

Let's bombard Oprah with emails. Let her know what's going on in her own state! Remember, like a politician, a "personality" will listen to numbers. If enough "fans" ask for a story, she'll do it...or risk her fan base! Power in numbers is wonderful.

Today I received my greeting cards that I ordered from Anna ( Discussion Board- General-Greeting Cards for Barbaro Fund). If you have not viewed Anna's artwork, please do yourself a favor and check it out!
After seeing these cards I had an idea that I wanted to share. I am going to purchase a rubber stamp kit of various greetings for Birthday, Get Well, Thank You, etc. Using these rubber stamps, Anna's note cards can become whatever type of greeting card that I need. (Whenever I HAVE to send a card or note, I struggle with the wording. I'm lousy at writing under pressure! So these stamps will make my life just a little less "rattling"!)
No more money spent at Hallmark or any other card place! I see the benefit of this in many ways. First sending Anna's artwork is a present within itself. How lucky for anyone to receive that in the mail!
Secondly it helps spend my money in giving back to the causes that are near and dear to me. I do believe in "economic power", targeting who and where my money is spent! Why spend money at Hallmark when I can purchase Anna's cards and raise monies for the Laminitis Fund?
Thirdly, sending a FOB created card helps raise awareness of the issues that we are fighting for.
    Thanks Anna....your work IS Amazing!

Selling off these horses and not having them race very long is one of many things that is killing horse racing as a sport. All sports are built around fans who pick and then follow their favorites. In this sport you barely get their names down and they are off the market.

Posted by: MJ at June 3, 2007 1:14 AM

(IN REFERENCE TO THE LINK I POSTED AT 12:59 am...I'm not the type who would normally post about a donation, but this is such a great story I wanted to share it!)

Most of these donations (for the Kansas horses) are out of my league, but I do have a great story (and a donation of $25.75 to offer)...until the Kentucky Derby I never wagered on anything in my life, and being unemployed would say that this was a hell of a time to start gambling!

However, I opened an account at bodog.com with the princely sum of $20. with the understanding that any winnings would be used for horse rescues. Call it beginners's luck or whatever - I have no system, I don't pay much attention to odds, I don't bet often, and I mostly just listen to my gut - but this is my 4th donation made from my profits!

This one was really special - I bet on DELIGHTFUL KISS to PLACE in the Ohio Derby today...the little devil WON at huge odds, so my "place" wager brought in $23.60!

So, all friends of the Kansas beauties, please send a great big cyber-kiss to DELIGHTFUL KISS!

Hello all and before I start let me say I KNOW your frustration over Cavel and the fact that the bills are not yet passed by Congress. I just wanted to address some comments that I am sure were made in frustration and anger yesterday which have been nagging at me ever since.. Some of you are angry at what you perceive to be a lack of effort by some high profile people to work on the horse slaughter efforts ( e.g. Dr. R , the Jacksons , and others). I just want to give you some food for thought based upon my own knowledge of why some people cannot take on a public profile for a cause. I am NOT saying this applies to any of the people mentioned in posts yesterday and today but I want you to think about what could keep people from taking a public stance on issues. This is based on my own experience and the experience of friends and colleagues.

First, a person may have an employment contract that prohibits them from becoming a spokesperson (or taking any public role) in any "political" action. This often happens with people employed by non-profits, educational institutions and even some large publicly traded organizations.Other people may be more subtly coerced into not taking on an issue at the tthreat of losing a job. ( I have real experience with this one at the hands of a former , probably certifiable, boss!)

Second, a person(usually a government employee but it can include govt contractors) may be prohibited by state or federal statute from engaging in certain "political" activities, including lobbying .

Third, a person may be very active behind the scenes on an issue by funding a cause or hiring a lobbyist to be the public "personna" on a cause.
These are just a few examples. I know no one meant any real malice when they said things out of anger and disappointment, but I am just putting this out here so you can think it over.

TerriC - GREAT POINTS TO PONDER! I know that when I was asking anyone I knew to call-fax-call, my daughter-in-law (who has a high position in a major insurance company) said that they weren't allowed to make "political" calls of any kind on company phones...or to use the fax machines or corporate email accounts for political purposes. Of course, she solved the problem for me by using a fax machine at a library...

Thanks for your post, Terri! I think we need to worry more about what WE are doing, and not so much about what we "perceive" that other people AREN'T doing...

    Friar Tuck and MJ
Thank you both for pointing out that it is inappropriate to contact the judge in the Cavel case. A judge is unable to consider ANYTHING other than the case before him (e.g., the papers that are filed, the facts as described by the parties, the applicable law), and it is considered very poor form for people to call a judge's office advocating one side or another of a case. It would just look like the callers were trying to improperly influence the judge, or like they didn't quite understand the function (and impartiality) of the legal system. Not even the PARTIES are permitted this kind of contact with the judge's office. Everything that is presented to the judge has to be formally filed, so that both sides can see what is said, and can respond to it.

It IS appropriate to call legislators, though -- since their whole purpose is to make policy decisions that consider, and reflect, the interests and the political will of their constituents.

Wonderful words, Ken Z. from N.Y.. Are you new to this web site? FOB from California, when will the pictures from Hollywood Park ever be available? We had such a wonderful time with Dawn. Thank you, Tim and Alex for this web site.

Blessings to you, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, you have so much more class than the owners of Street Sense. I guess the bottom line is all about money. Fortunately, there are those that are not.

The last week was so very difficult for all of us.

Just as a reminder, if you are really "down" or burnt out concerning anti-slaughter activities , a lot of work still needs to be done in Barbaro's name regarding track safety. If you are taking a brief break from the rescue efforts, why not consider turning your energy to track safety for a while?

    Good morning FOBs,

Just a reminder to those that have HRTV tonight
6/3 at 9PM EST they will be having a special about Barbaro on Inside edition. I've read that Dr. Richardson was interviewed for the show.

I also had a chance to speak with a standard bred (harness racing)trainer yesterday. We were discussing Artsplace who passed away in 2006. Artsplace was a champion harness racing horse who passed away at 18. The horse passed away from laminitis and was at New Bolton Center. The trainer said that Artsplace was in the stall next to Barbaro. She said that Mrs. Jackson would give him treats when she visited Barbaro. I guess that he was one of the horses that Mrs. Jackson was talking about when she said 4 horses were euthanized for laminitis during Barbaro's stay at New Bolton. The trainer also said it is rare for a standard bred to get laminitis. I guess because of the stockier legs. Artsplace had put on a lot of weight which caused the problem.

Also the CBS evening news will be having a story about "Old Friends" which will be aired on Thursday 6/6. This is a portion of the email that I Received from Michael.

"Richard Schlesinger, a terrific correspondent with the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, and his producer, Chloe Arensberg, visited the farm last week. They spent several hours with the retirees.both human and equine.and they anticipate the story running on June 6 -the Thursday night before the Belmont Stakes on the CBS Evening News. They got some great shots of all the horses but, especially, Ruhlmann, Swan's Way, Bull Inthe Heather, Special Ring and, of course, Popcorn Deelites. Mr. Schlesinger had a great rapport with the horses and I'm sure that'll come out in the piece. We'll keep everyone posted if there are any changes."

Barbaro, just remember that I still love you and think of you every day. Have a great day in horse heaven.

Good morning all: yucky night in upstate ny fans and a ,little AC unit chugging away. 14 hounds all down, me tossing and turning. Re-trashed mt sore knee moving a HUGE dead TV out onto the porch--yes, yes, ask for help...most of us single chicks know that doesn't always --ha ha --work. anyhow. The knee paid me back 10 fold last night.

despite the ministrations of Pre (a boarder...sweet and sweet potatoe pie) and Jessie: my fluffy lurcher from Ireland--I wound up in the kitchen twice bleary eyed trying to think how many more Aleve I could take before I bore hole into my aging stomach....

GAAACK> Then, around 3:30 :huzzah! skunks! Apparently staging a passion play in my front garden, complete with the requisite special effects aka: l'odeur....

I opened the back door to discover that it was WAY cooler suddenly, opened door, opened windows, moved fans to strategic positions, turn AC to FAN, and then settled in (ha) for what was only another 1.5 hour of sleep/

Let me tell you how I do on sleep deprivation....
one can only imagine...and naturally, at those hours of the morning, I think of the foals flown to Japan., I think of the mare from the pregnant Beltex lot, with her purple halter that someone lovingly added to her picture.

You know where all that train of thought goes...no where good. no where productive...

so now we're all awaiting the anointing of the 14 bowls of dog food with assorted additives for assorted dogs. And then, huzzah, my dear friend and her wonderful famblee will come and lug the new TV (bigger and better)out of the van and help me set it up...I can do this myself, they insisted...sigh. Their other kids will meet their new GH this morning as well...a big black kid named Bart--a name I think they'll change...Bart: blech. He hardly knows it. I am sure he had a call name....he did 140 races, and they had to call him something....and it wasn't Bart.

OK off to the kitchen. It'll be cooler here today, it's classic syracuse gray skies. we may get a little rain...that's ok too...a good day to re-coop and read and get ready for calling on Monday. We have so much to do.

    I AM HERE.
    I GET IT.

Good Sunday morning to all FOB!

I have a message of hope for all who are upset about the TRO decision for Cavel. If you think we had a bad week, think about what the proslaughter side had to deal with. They lost all hope of getting the Texas plants to operate again, and a law was passed in Illinois to ban horse slaughter. These are crushing blows to them. Ous is only temporary. They are doomed.

We are good at keeping this issue before the Senators and Congressmen with our calls. That is what we have been asked to do.

Let's Roll!!! I am so invigorated about calling, I can't wait.

Thanks again Alex for all you do.

    HBO tells Barbaro's sad story
    By Dick Heller
    June 3, 2007

HBO's promotional hook for its latest "Sports of the 20th Century" documentary could have been, "If you liked Seabiscuit, you'll love Barbaro."
There is a unifying theme between "Barbaro," which premieres Wednesday night on the pay cable network, and the 2003 film adapted from Laura Hillenbrand's fine book "Seabiscuit": The love and affection between horses and humans.
Seabiscuit's story is mostly an upbeat saga of how Depression-era America clutched the undersized, overachieving racehorse to its collective heart. But we all know Barbaro finally was euthanized in January of this year, 20 months after the Kentucky Derby champion broke down with an injured right rear leg in the 2005 Preakness Stakes, despite valiant efforts by doctors to save his life.
The unknown is what tantalizes us whenever a superb athlete is forced to end his career early. As racing writer William Nack puts it at the end of HBO's hour-long program, "We like to think [Barbaro] would have gone on to win the Triple Crown. But we don't know that. All we can do is speculate. He's one of those horses who will be in history an eternal memory."
Good taste and overall excellence define HBO's "20th Century" series, and the former quality is very much in evidence here. Executive producers Ross Greenburg and Rick Bernstein must have been tempted to show a zillion replays of Barbaro's breakdown early in the 131st Preakness, but fortunately they resisted. We see it once as jockey Edgar Prado immediately pulls up the horse, and the long battle to save him begins with the commendable work of Pimlico's veterinary crew. Swiftly these men got Barbaro into an equine ambulance that transported him -- with police escort -- to a medical facility in New Bolton, Pa.
Despite HBO's restrained approach, you want to scream, "Don't go!" as Barbaro is led into the starting gate at Pimlico. When he breaks through the barrier prematurely -- "always a bad sign," Nack calls it -- you want to tell owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and trainer Michael Matz not to let him race. Of course, hindsight is always 20-20.
We see and hear a great deal from the Jacksons, Matz and New Bolton chief of surgery Dean Richardson, and the love all of them share for Barbaro is touching. But from the moment the bone in his leg shattered into pieces at the Preakness, the odds were against his survival -- even though, Richardson tells us, the horse behaved extremely well during all the various medical procedures that followed. The intelligence of horses has been debated for centuries, but Barbaro seemed to know what was happening and was grateful for the attempts to repair the damage.
There is great poignancy here, too. After working out Barbaro the morning of the Preakness, Matz says, assistant trainer Peter Brette told him, "It's gonna take a horse with wings to beat him today." Or perhaps merely fate.
Amazingly, Barbaro entered (and won) only five races before running away with the Kentucky Derby. Says Gretchen Jackson of the period before the Derby: "I saw a huge rainbow, and I said my son [Barbaro, of course] is truly blessed." And perhaps before the Preakness two weeks later, a black cloud hovered overhead.
Certainly, Barbaro's plight and pluck touched millions. As narrator Liev Schreiber explains at the start of this fine documentary: "Animals sometimes can take us to a place we can't reach ourselves."

I am a little sad after I watched this documentary on HBO that was about horses being drugged before races. What was really sad the people fined for drugging the horses, are still training today and have one a major race. Very sad because they said when the drugs wore off the horses were like 95 yr old men. They could barely move. So disgusting. I know in my heart Michael Matz would have never drugged beautiful Barbaro. One horse had been so drugged he ran a race with a broken pelvis and then they were going to send him to slaughter. Luckily, someone bought him and called a vet. He is being treated and is able to graze the rest of his life. God bless whomever saved him. I don't know how prevalent this such of awful act is, but it made me view racing a little differently. I hope and pray there are stiffer penalties for people being caught doing it to these horses. If anyone is interested, although it is heartbreaking, it is on HBO on Demand.

God, please save all the horses from slaughter and from being drugged. They don't deserve these evil acts. Please, please, please save the horses!

    I love you, Beautiful Barbaro!!!!

    Hi, FOB's!

    ###
had an AMAZING morning at Fair Hill. Horses are all wonderful, Real Lace is more than ready to race today (I told her to run with the wind and come home safely). Mediman was doing things that Windy used to do to me (to get attention). Grandma and I had some wonderful time together. Saw Red Aspen outdoors grazing and talked with Mike for a short time. He is so nice. Saw Peter Brette. Saw Tim. There was a gorgeous horse (found out it was from Michael's barn) in the large fenced area next to the entrance to Tim's barn. He was strutting his stuff and he and I were communing. Luke and I had about 20 minutes to ourselves - he was outdoors in one of the round pens when I got there and was resting. Saw the ever-elegant Farouche, the ever-wonderful Quick Quest. Was there for about 2 hours altogether.

Am going to rest. You are all the greatest.

Lynne, you'll see your frens real soon! But Luke and Grandma were the ones who were very centered with me - they had much to "tell" me. I wish I knew the name of the horse that was in the fenced area. He was so awesome - so handsome (I love them all...). I'm just waiting to hear how Real Lace did today...I worry about all of them. I just want them home safely.

    ###
Am just getting paperwork done to start the publication of "Cassidy's Rescue". Hopefully by the end of August I should have a hardcover book to show the world. I'm excited and a little scared at the same time. It just seems so natural to promote equine rescue/welfare as my "platform". I just choose to target young children to plant the seeds of compassion as early as possible. I've already got one offer of a book signing. I already have the sequel in the works.

Take care everybody...tomorrow is ranch day - hopefully the rain heading this way won't be too intense.

    LOST IN THE FOG TRIBUTE/DONATION

Sunday June 10, at Golden Gate Fields, LOST IN THE FOG STAKES OF $50,000 will be held. GEVA is planning a booth to raise funds in Memory of the Champ. If anyone would like to donate to GEVA, Pam could use the help. I will be attending and would like to take any donations from FOB's to surprise her. She does not like to ask for help. On that note, I would be happy to take any donations I can gather in such a short notice to her on Sunday. My mailing address is Nona VanDamme

Lyn G....and do they 'tell' you with their eyes?
Because that is the feeling I get when I'm with my frens....especially, Black Jack!

To me, their eyes tell EVERYTHING....and yes, they seem to have MUCH to tell us:)

I'll be looking for your book....let us know when it's ready!!:)

Lynne, yes, definitely with the eyes, but also with the thoughts/impressions. More than one horse today just looked at me from a very centered place and it was wonderful. Windy and Illusion do with with me all the time (at the ranch).Stormy and I touch heads all the time and that's how I get his insights...he can be very affectionate with me). When they look at you directly and are coming from that centered place, I get ready to receive insights sometimes DAYS later...its that deep.

Tomorrow starts another call-in week to our elected officials. Lets show them what we are made of - the strong, united Fans of Barbaro.

Lynne Brown...when I was at FairHill at Tim's barn I had the opportunity to speak with Nonpariel ....I do believe they tell all with their eyes !!! She nuzzled my hand several times and she knew I had nothing to offer her but LOVE !!! You are right it was HEAVEN....she is a very lovely smart horse !!! We talked about many things and her eyes never left mine.... we discussed the starting gate....the race and the importance of passing all the other horses but most importantly coming home safely!!!!! It is no surpise to me that she has placed in her races or that she is calm when Alex puts her in the starting gate...it was ALL in her eyes !!!!!

your words for digger strike a chord within me,
he will try his hardest and for this alone he deserves respect, if his owner, trainer, decision-makers put him there at his peril,
if he will try harder that he should,
pushes more than he is physically able,
to do more than his body can take,
    then shame on them
    shame on them

    no shame to digger,

Hi Lyn & Maribel...yeah...it's in their eyes...for sure! Maribel..when Rosie 'nibbles' my hand and there isn't any treat to be found...I believe she is 'hoping' one might have 'grown there' in the last few seconds...lol! Mister...well, he'd just 'nicker' and 'paw' at the ground....'til he realizes it is all for nothing, afterall...then he just wants his butt skritched and 'please brush me ladeeeee':)

Blackie...well, he's different...I still have to 'stoop over' to get him to come into me...and he takes his treats...after he realizes the treats are gone...then we 'work' together...he takes a little 'convincing'....like I must stay stooped a little bit..and very softly whispering, touch him ever so gently...just a little at first...then he gets the idea he likes it:) And we are 'off and running' with this touching thing:) His eyes will actually become 'heavy'...almost closing completely...and when I 'tickle' his upper lip between his nostrils..he REALLY likes that:) and he leans into my hand...and soon his upper lip is up and no gums are showing, but a big horsey smile sure is!! And then, he will rest his horsey cheek against mine, or his forehead against mine...GOSH! I SURE HOPE THE MOM & DAD GET WELL VERRRRRRRYYYY SOOOOOOOON.....this is making me REALLY MISS THEM.....more:(

Hiya, FsOB! It's raining here now, but was clear enough this afternoon for a good walk and the chance to clip some weeds. Being outdoors and physically active helps me deal with the tumult of emotions that I've felt since Friday's ruling re. Cavel. I told the aesthetician at my hair dresser's yesterday (Abby is a very bright, progressive, politically informed young woman) about the Cavel, Beltex, and Dallas Crown places and she was simply appalled. Just couldn't believe that the word of the people of IL could be set aside by the Federal courts. Here's to renewed strength for us all in the coming work week. Wishing each of you peae tonight. RMH

It was a 30 minute program built around recorded interviews with Dr. Richardson and a narrator.
I have never attended the live presentations that Dr. R. has given since January. This was my first time of hearing Dr. R. talk more of the peril Barbaro was in during the days leading up to Jan. 29.

JAN - those eyes - mirrors to the soul, and what a soul Barbaro had...and what a soul he IS!

MJ - the special was made up of interview clips with Dr. Richardson interspersed with shots of Barbaro at New Bolton. The emphasis was on two things: the extreme difficulty/long odds of Barbaro's medical situation from the moment of the breakdown, which Dr. Richardson always stressed...and, on the other hand, the fact that until quite near the end, Barbaro was healthy, happy, gaining weight...enjoying himself as much as possible under very changed life circumstances....and that the guiding principle for him and for the Jacksons was Barbaro's quality of life...he discussed how "different" and "uncomfortable" Barbaro was on the night of January 28th....

What touched me the most (other than Barbaro's eyes!) was when Dr. Richardson discussed his conversation with the Jacksons on January 29th and said "it wasn't really a choice between (a) and (b)" and that it was a short conversation because they had discussed the possibilities on other occasions, and that Dr. Richardson saw his responsibility as "presenting the facts" of the situation and that "it was hard just getting the words out."

He also reiterated how day-to-day, touch-and-go this type of case was...and is with any horse with that severe an injury and the threat of laminitis always just in the background.

Lovely pictures of our favorite horse, of course, and many nice shots of the fence at New Bolton covered with colorful signs...all in all, I thought it was tastefully presented.

    Jan...additions/corrections?

To me the part on Barbaro's last days was the new information to me.

The program began with the thought that Barbaro's fight for his life began when Barbaro woke up from surgery. The remainder of the program basically was a summary of the progress and set backs from the initial surgery to January.

I was surprised by one other moment when they talked of the expert podiatrist (sp ?) putting that specialized "cast" /boot on. I felt the program laid the blame on that moment as the beginning of the end.

I do not want to leave you hanging....Nancy briught this point up more than I, so I wanted to give her time to voice her thoughts.
That part to me was more about how Barbaro was going downhill over the days leading up to January 29. The suddenness of January 29 seemed to be erased for me through this presentation.
The point was brought up again about how Barbaro was not comfortable, could not lie down for the first time.
Another moment that from Dr.Richardson was when he was making the point that at any moment Barbaro's condition could change, spiral downhill. He said that every morning he had no guarantee as to what he would find when he first saw Barbaro that day. He then made the point that the linnig in his stomach might have been better if there was some predictability on Barbaro's day-to-day condition.

    ## Lisa
I re-read your post and let me apologize that my following post did not follow what you were saying. Initially I was worried that people thought I was starting a controversy on this board by what I wrote. After I re-read your post I realize what you were saying. I always tried hard to ignore the finger pointing but also had that nagging question. So when I heard that thought actually voiced tonight, it made an impression on me. I'm sorry I mixed up what your post was saying. I should know not to try to answer my son's questions while writing and thinking about Barbaro! MJ - that Barbaro was, in Dr. Richardson's words, "a very different horse." He wasn't comfortable trying to lay down, he wasn't comfortable standing...and they had him in and out of the sling several times to try to ease his discomfort...

JAN & LISA - well, we're on the same wavelength for sure. The reason I didn't even mention the part about the "podiatrist" in the program was that I kept flashing back to the ugliness/fingerpointing/insults to the man that I read on this board...it was embarrassing, it was a nightmare on a PUBLIC board, and that's why I didn't want to bring it up. I also thought that it was the narrator of the program who placed the blame, if you will, NOT Dr. Richardson...he is far too professional to ever do that and has, in fact, taken all the "blame" on himself...not that there was a bit of blame to be placed! Laminitis is an equal-opportunity nightmare! You've probably seen me post that everyone I know who has horses uses four-letter words to describe it...one friend of mine describes laminitis as "the goblin in the closet just waiting to spring out when you think everything is ok!"

I do think he went down hill when his foot went in the cast. However, fixing his foot (the reason for the cast) was probably not an option. Thus, it could have happened at any timen with any Doctor. Dr. R. always stressed that Barbaro had to grow back the entire hoof. Also, I remember reading that Dr. Anderson said Dr. R. was worried about Barbaro's foot over the holidays. I think that is why Dr. Morrison was called in.

    Nancy, Jan and Lisa

When I went to Dr R's lecture, he said that Dr. Morrison was called in because they expected Barbaro to be sent to Kentucky and he would be his primary care giver. He stressed that he was called in because he is the best in his field and was chosen after careful consideration by himself, the Jackson's and Michael Matz.
He never even hinted that he caused any problem.

I thought it was interesting that Michael Matz was included in most of the crucial decisions.

I love how all of Barbaro's connections worked together for the good of Barbaro.
Interesting additional info about Dr. Morrison.I so wish I could hear Dr. R. speak about Barbaro before the opportunity does not present itself again.
    Thanks!

    About Erin Brockovich,
I have been e-mailing back and forth with Erin Brockovich/her law firm for the past week. It was by coincidence that I got an e-mail from her because we belong to one of the same environmental groups a little over a week ago.
I have e-mailed her everything about FOB, our story, the Anti-slaughter issues, links, etc. I am hoping to hear from her tomarrow or Tuesday at the latest if she can help out. She responded to me by asking what she could help out with so I assume she was interested. We'll see what happens.
Everything happens for a reason. Have a nice night FOB!
