Barbaro Updates: 299

updates are now here.

Update 2006: The Belmont undercard is always strong, The Manhattan is one such race and features Fair Hill's leading money-winner Better Talk Now: Sky Conqueror Faces Better Talk Now, English Channel in Manhattan, excerpt:

The duo will break from post 3 and will have to face down Better Talk Now, who has come up with some gigantic efforts in his 38-race career, not the least of which were his victories in the 2004 Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) at Lone Star Park and in Belmont Park's Man o'War (gr. I) in 2005.

Now an 8-year-old, the Talkin Man gelding has bankrolled more than $3.5 million, but has never won at a mile and a quarter, and despite his classy resume, the distance may be a concern to some when he goes to post in the Manhattan. Trainer H. Graham Motion remains unwavering in his faith in Better Talk Now, however. After all these years, he knows what to expect.

"It's always a pleasure to talk about him," Motion said. "I think that getting older is actually helping him a bit. He is so much more settled now, much more mature."

Better Talk Now made his seasonal debut and first start since his half-length loss in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs on November 4 in the May 5 Turf Classic (gr. I) at Churchill Downs. He was steadied at the sixteenth pole and made a valiant effort to finish fourth, beaten only a length and three-quarters by victorious Sky Conqueror.

"He really took the worst of it," Motion said. "I'm not sure if he would have won, but he might easily have been second or third. But let's face it, we all know him by now. That race was only a mile and an eighth and he only has that eighth of a mile kick. If he gets taken out of that game, he's not going to get it done. He ran his race.

"I think he is in a good position for the Manhattan. This is only his second start back. It's not like it is late in the season and he is going into a mile and a half race that can really beat him up. I think a mile and a quarter will be no problem for him. I am very lucky to have him."

Jockey Ramon Dominguez will ride Better Talk Now in the Manhattan.

Update 2005: I spoke to Mrs. Jackson this afternoon on a couple of matters, but the most important being she had just watched the DVD that was made as a result of the Barbaro birthday celebrations. She was very complimentary. Coincidentally I received copies in the mail so I thought I better check it out myself quickly. It was fantastic. I hope those of you who have ordered enjoy it, I am told you can still order, all proceeds go to New Bolton Center's Fund for Laminitis Research. I have also added a quiz question on this discussion thread: VIDEO OF BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION with $100 to the winner's charity choice. From that thread you can also learn how to order the DVD, Because of Barbaro: A Celebration of his life. Its really good!

Update 2004: Seven have been entered for The Belmont, Digger is not one of them. The morning line favorite is Curlin at 6-5. He will break from post position 3, but post positions for this long race and short field are meaningless: Entries for the 2007 Belmont Stakes.

Update 2003: A gorgeous morning this morning at Fair Hill. A little breezy, lots of sunshine and fresh air. That being said I only had two to ride, so it was a short morning. First out was Who's Happy, and she went to the dirt track to jog a couple of miles. Tim came with us on Nonpariel, but took her to the gate to break her out across the shoot. She looked good doing that (from the distance anyway). Nonpariel makes her real-race debut on saturday at Philadelphia Park. My second horse was Gator Nation and we went across the fields. Very pleasant. Victor Molina stopped by and was to breeze Nautical Agent. He left some goodies (donuts etc.) but I had left before they had gotten back from their work. A lovely, short morning.

Update 2002: Steve Haskin examines the addition of Rags to Riches to the Belmont: Steve Haskin's Belmont Report: Belmont Gets Richer With Addition of 'Rags'.

For those with access to HBO, it is the Barbaro documentary tonight at 10 pm (HBO Produces a Winner With Barbaro Documentary). All FOBs who saw this documentary on monday night and provided feedback had only very positive words.

Tomorrow night Old Friends will be featured on CBSs evening news: Old Friends to be Featured on CBS News.

The first American mingled with his pride a singular humility. Spiritual arrogance was foreign to his nature and teaching. He never claimed that his power of articulate speech was proof of superiority over "dumb creation" ; on the other hand, speech is to him a perilous gift.

He believes profoundly in silence - the sign of a perfect equilibrium. Silence is the absolute poise or balance of body, mind, and spirit.

The man who preserves his selfhood ever calm and unshaken by the storms of existence - not a leaf, as it were, astir on the tree, not a ripple upon the surface of the shining pool - his, in the mind of the unlettered sage, is the ideal attitude and conduct of life ..... Silence is the cornerstone of character.

(Ohiyesa)

I post this from the Grandfathers today in honor of the Silent Ones. The Silent Ones are the true strength of this Board. They speak only when they have something to say and they are men and women of action.

Thank you Silent Ones for sharing your Barbaro stories with me and being my frens. I may not win this bet with Cal, but even if I lose..I am the richer. I carry the stories and emotions of all of you in my heart. Thank you from my heart to yours.

If anyone else would take the time to share your
Barbaro story, my email address is
hgill@qx.net

I am still way short of 75 frens, but the ones I have are priceless.

O' GREAT SPIRIT
help me always
to speak the truth quietly,
to listen with an open mind
when others speak,
and to remember the peace
that may be found in silence.

Good morning Alex and everyone!

I just noticed the mention of the Old Friends piece to appear on CBS news tonight! Coincidentally I had received this nice email from Matt Bailis with Old Friends last night! I had contacted Matt regarding War Emblem at the suggestion of an FOB.

------------------------------
Elizabeth -

Thanks for your note. I have every confidence that War Emblem will meet a much better fate than poor Ferdinand. What you've heard about War Emblem is true, in that he's been unsuccessful as a stallion to date, in part due to his lack of interest in covering many mares. This is not to say that War Emblem has not shown *any* interest, and there has been some marginal success in breeding War Emblem to some specific mares that he has taken an interest in. He has had a few winners, the last of which (to my knowledge) was Clan Emblem back in the early December timeframe. At any rate, the last I heard was that the Japanese breeders have not quite given up on War Emblem yet.

Old Friends and its contacts in Japan have been keeping an eye on War Emblem. Though there are no certainties, Old Friends has excellent connections and a stellar reputation with the Japanese breeders and I am optimistic that, when the time is right and he is no longer breeding, War Emblem will be returned to the United States to Old Friends (as Wallenda was recently). In the meantime, we can ensure the present and future success of these operations by continuing to provide financial support for Old Friends and to spread the word to like-minded individuals. It's extraordinarily expensive to secure the rights and arrange the logistics including purchase, airfare, quarantine, a traveling groom, etc. to bring a horse like War Emblem back from Japan. As was recently the case with Wallenda, though much of the cost of returning Wallenda was secured through donations, including a sizeable donation from Cot Campbell of Dogwood Stables (former owners of Wallenda in his racing years), a bank loan had to be taken out to secure the remaining dollars. So help is always needed.

Anyway, thanks again for reaching out to me. I haven't gotten an update in about 2 months on War Emblem so I'll check back with Michael Blowen and see if there's any new status to share. I'll e-mail you back if there's been any change since my last update.

Matt

Hello Alex,

I can't wait to see the HBO documentary about Barbaro. How we all wish we could change the ending.

That's terrific that Old Friends will be featured on CBS evening news. The more publicity the better- people need to know there are wonderful facilities like this around and there are people who care about these retired racehorses, as well as people who don't care. This is terrific and let's hope this is just the beginning of stories about our horse friends and the people who care for them. The more attention, the better- for all horses!!

Always missing and loving you, sweet Barbaro.

HBO Documentary-
Hi Everyone, the documentarty was excellent. I went to school for documentary film making and I can say it was done without trying to get the most tears but giving the most balanced view of Barbaro's life. They unearthed some great footage of Big B when he was a youngster training. Also I thinkif you email HBO they might make it available on DVD for everyone. PS they use 11 of my photos and u can see the back of my head. I know you all having been dying too!
cheers Sabina

MARES AND FOALS AT AUCTION TODAY

Today is the Centennial Auction in Fort Collins,
Colorado http://www.claauction.com You can watch and bid online: http://www.dvauction.com/ ; It is tomorrow and usually starts around 4pm Mountain Time (2 hrs before EST). I will be at work but can bid online (as can anyone else).

I stopped by the auction yesterday afternoon and found 2mares with babies at their side in grave shape that the kill buyer bought TO the auction to sell. The mare and the foal each have seperate hip numbers so that means they will probably be sold SEPERATLY. Mare #8258 and her foal 8259 and getting an upper respirtoey infection. I believe that this very young
foal (#8259) will not survive without it's mother. The mare #8254 may not be able to overcome her hoof injury, but her foal #8255 may be old enough to survive on her own- but they should stay together!

There is a chance that the horses may find good homes, but it is seriously doubtful at this auction. I can almost guarantee that the mares and foals will not stay together. There is a chance the ponies may find private homes. I have attached descriptions of the horses below.

The problem: our facility is FULL.

How to solve our problem: Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue(www.rockymountainhorserescue.org ) can house the pairs until they are healthy, however, we need a long term place for these horses.

What we need: Our small rescue does not have a reserve fund and we would need full financial assistance assistance in this rescue. This would include the purchase price of the horses. The slaughter bound horses have been selling for about 0.20 cents a pound.
We also would need assistance transporting and
medicating these sick and injured horses. Most
importantly, we need another rescue or sanctuary who can take in these horses when they are healthy enough to be moved a longer distance. ALL other local rescues we have contacted are full.

This is a big undertaking, and I understand we can't save them all, but can we try our best to do what we can?

Highest priorty:#8258 & 8259 (sick mare/foal); #8254 &
8255( njured mare/older foal), #8256 (pregnant
pony),#8619 (unbroken 2 y.o.),

Alex,
Thank you for providing info about HBO documentary. I can't wait. I had HBO cut on this week just to watch Beautiful Barbaro. I absolutely can't wait!!! Thanks for providing us with the input....

Can't wait to watch "Old Friends." I have often wondered what happens to racehorses when their racing days are through. I had a horror they went to slaughter houses. Hopefully, the piece will educate me about where they go when they don't race.

Only several hours away from Barbaro documentary.
I can't wait!!!! I already have my Kleenex ready!

I love you, Barbaro, so much and hope your beautiful spirit is running around like you loved doing. I love, love, love you!!!!

I am going to email Sen. Corker and Alexander some more about the horse slaughter plants. They just have to be closed down.

Have a great day, FOB's!

### Frens I am reposting something I wrote for you a long time ago. This was written before Barbaro crossed the Bridge, when we waited every day for ACN...We have lost some of these people I refer to here, I wish they would all come back.
Some of you weren't here when I wrote this. I hope you will enjoy reading it. Those that were here, I hope you enjoy reading it again...

Dear Alex and FOB’s

We have all heard it said “Life is not measured by the breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.”.
When I was a child, I had a toy called a viewfinder, it was like a tiny slideshow, you inserted a round disk into the viewer, clicked and another picture would appear..Think power point Circa 1950’s lol.. In my mind I have so many visual and word images brought forth by all of you and the one who unites us, Barbaro..

###Harriette, thanks so much for your post this morning.

I have saved it in a file called Harriette Brillianthawk June 6 2007.....my 57th birthday...such a beautiful gift from you.

It has taken me most of my 57 years to learn the value of silence, how little personal growth can occur without it. I still struggle to live a life which includes conscious silence, but I GET IT.

Posted by: Linda M. in TX at June 6, 2007 2:00 PM

###
HARRIETTE - I admit that I'm not engaged by the "chocolate capers" between you and Cal because at this point in MY life I have only one goal with regard to my activities on this board...the passage of federal legislation to end horse slaughter! As Glenda posted yesterday, some of us are passionate about ending slaughter, some of us are passionate about rescues, some of us are passionate about track safety...but we are ALL passionate about something!

Ending the scourge of slaughter is the issue nearest and dearest to MY heart...and to the heart of many others who post here and also to many of the silent ones...when I started the CT State Group, 7 people (out of our group of 15) came out of the woodwork to join up...I had never seen their names, none of us had seen their names before, but 7 silent ones stepped forward, and I am SO proud of them!

SO HERE IS MY CHALLENGE TO YOU...I will gladly submit one of my writings about Barbaro to you by the end of this weekend IF you agree to become the state leader for Kentucky! It amazes me that Kentucky doesn't have a state group...Kentucky, the scene of Barbaro's subliiiiiiime performance, doesn't have a state group? What's up with that?

AND, after what will likely be a long, annoying call to tech support so that I can access my email again, I will pledge to email EVERY state leader and ask them to participate in your "75 Frens Chocolate Challenge" in gratitude for you accepting the role of KY STATE LEADER!!!

So what do you say? Whatever your decision, please say it HERE because I won't have email access until the end of the day (if I'm lucky)!

I wish we could tell the senators and congressmen that we are literaly hundreds and thousands of FsOB and that we are dedicated to Horse Rescue...our accomplishments are so impressive....I know that's a NO! NO! NO!....if they only knew that we won't let the horses down!!!

BARBARO NATION WE have the POWER to EFFECT CHANGE!

THE BARBARO EFFECT IS WORKING !!!!!

JUST THINK OF ALL WE COULD HAVE ACCOMPLISHED IF WE PUT ALL THE MONEY INTO THE HORSE RESCUES.....
IMAGINE THE GOOD WE COULD HAVE DONE !!!!
INSTEAD of HAVING TO DO WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING....

WE MUST PASS THOSE BILLS ASAP....

Repost:

We have been collecting money for gifts to Michael Matz, Peter Brette, and Chelokee to celebrate the winning of the Barbaro Stakes.
If anyone still wants to donate, there is a second round of gifts that are yet to be presented.
The FOBs have already presented gift baskets to Michael, Peter, and ..of course...Chelokee, in addition to rose bushes for outside planting. But due to the great FOB response, there will be more presented in celebration of this great moment in horse racing!

If you missed this opportunity and would still like to participate, please contact Kennett Florist with your donation. The deadline for donations is this Friday, June 8.

The telephone number for Kennett Florist is 610-444-6040

STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY JUNE 6

Congratulations to everyone…..looks like we have two new cosponsors!! Congressman Brady (PA) and Congressman Krenshaw (FL). The paperwork takes a few days so, hopefully, we will see their names shortly. AND, it’s no coincidence that both come from states where we have VERY active state groups!!! This is the very reason we are encouraging those of you who have not yet done so to join a state group. They have been VERY effective, especially with members of the House!!

As we all learned last week, our horses will never be safe from harm until we pass this federal legislation. It was a wonderful thing that no horse was slaughtered on US soil for six days but we did not really stop slaughter at all. We just temporarily relocated it. Sadly, we have been informed that slaughter in Mexico and Canada has risen 240%. And our supporters fear another foreign slaughter plant will open up across the borders because of this increase. We have to stop the transport. Also, there is a possibility that another plant will open in this country if we cannot get this legislation passed.
It was a tough lesson but I believe it made us all more determined to get this done once and for all.
With renewed energy, we continue our campaign this week UNITED and with a commitment stronger than ever. A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND!! We have joined together as one voice and that voice is stronger than ever.

While the strategy has changed some, it is with the same purpose…..COSPONSORS. We have been in contact again with our DC connections who cannot stress strongly enough the importance of more cosponsors.

Here are the key numbers…….We need to have 218 cosponsors in the House (we now have 160) and 60 in the Senate ( we now have 27). So, as you can see, we have a long way to go.

The situation in Illinois is frustrating, but it must go through the legal process. While we hope and pray for a good outcome there, WE must put our energies into the big picture. If we are successful, we will never have to worry about Cavel again!!!

For this week, we have been asked to focus on members of the House who were co-sponsors of HR503 last year but who have not yet signed on this year. Also, we have been asked to include Senator Obama and Senator Durbin

Kathy S.,

I was sitting at my desk in front of the window and all of a sudden, there's Bart outside my window, "waving" at me! (Someone was holding him up, waving his paw. We're easily entertained!)

Bart LOVES his charm that Aunty Glenda gave him! He was rubbing his face against it and spending all sorts of time looking at it. He's so cool!

My husband has Bronchitis (sp?). So, he came home with his medicine and is hopefully on the road to recovery. I'm slowly doing better so I won't complain (anymore!)

Thank you for asking Kathy! Bart has gotten 10 minutes of Kathy pats so far this morning!

Take care Kathy and enjoy your day!

### SABINA--It's great to see you posting! Thanks for your great comments on the documentary. Now if I only had HBO!!!

### 3 MORE co-Sponsors yesterday is FANTASTIC!

### Down to the final 8 horses for the Kansas rescue. They are all out of the pasture and most have had their Coggins, so $2400 more to go and it's another 46 horses saved by FOBs! Check out the info on the DB threads. . .

For us to have success...we keep going. The only way we will lose is to give up. To win is to be persistent...and you FOBS have shown that. If you get exhausted...rest and come back stronger....

Then when we win, we will be full of joy and fullment.

HARRIETTE: I HOPE THIS SUFFICES...IT IS SO HARD TO THINK BACK THOROUGH IT ALL...HOW WE WILL MISS HIM FOREVER. HOW LUCKY THAT WE LIVED IN HIS TIME....THE MEMORY OF HOW LOST WE (i) FELT....HARD TO GO BACK, Love you girl: jonna

...Like many others, as Barbaro swept through the Derby like an unstoppable weather front, I screamed at the top of my lungs--totally alone in my little house, "OMYGOD!!"

He took my breath away....and with that, he took my heart as well. I said aloud, "He's going to win the Triple Crown." Yes, we would live in the era of a Triple Crown winner. I was joyous. I told everyone. He's gonna do it.

I began going to the Tim Woolley website to eagerly watch Barbaro's every move on the trip to the Preakness...The Barbaro Nation was quietly taking shape.

We all loved the same horse, and with every moment, we fell deeper in love with everything about him, his intelligence, his stature, his shimmering bay coat. His feistiness. The turn of his legs, the stunning head, pricked ears, all of it. The whole package.

And it wasn't just Barbaro. It was trainer Michael Matz'incredible life story. His modesty and quiet
certainty in the ability of this colt to win it all..and the jockey Edgar. How he grabbed Barbaro's neck after the Derby with, how he sprinkled water on the great colt's head to cool him off--how that felt like a christening.

The Jacksons: so unwordly despite their great wealth. So proud of their colt. They were as excited as the guy on the street...we fell in love with them too.

Here was our Great Hope. Get ready world. Barbaro is an unstoppable engine. He will leave everyone in his wake. His name would stand in time--forever.

Leave lots of blank spaces in future pedigrees to accommodate Barbaro's name in the lines of great horses as yet unborn. As yet unthought of...but the stuff of fantasy breedings.

So when the Preakness came, and details of that, except for Prado's supreme sacrifice and courage in pulling the colt up and stopping him; saving him, really--are well known and be best left untold. We know them all. It was a horror. Most of us see it in our sleep.

The next Barbaro we came to adore was the patient at New Bolton Center. We became the Fans of Barbaro. We were bound together by this horse's courage, his heart; what a tryer he was...How willing he was to cooperate, to accept whatever they asked of him. To remain alert and curious to the world around him: Cats. Cows. New people, fillies to be admired. Peppermints, Stud muffins.
He was still a baby, after all.

We loved the extraordinary partnership between Barbaro and Dr. Dean Richardson...that bond destined to tear hearts. We watched Dr. R. take him out to graze. The buzz that Barbaro was OUTSIDE tore through websites like the announcement of the second coming. BARBARO WAS GRAZING OUTSIDE!!! It was really going to be OK>

Even as we fussily lamented that his rapidly improving condition would dictate his being moved to Kentucky, we fretted. Talk was on about where he would go next--who could care for him as well as NBC? We worried about florists in the area...who could replace Allie and Rachel at Kennett Florists? There were so few warnings that the sky was about to part and fall...all the pale worries eclipsed by Monday, January 29th.

Because in the blink of an eye: it was over. Laminitis. In three legs. And suddenly, he was gone. Leaving mourners the world over, none the least of which were the Jacksons.

The press conference after they stilled the great heart of their hopes and dreams and their beloved horse? Once again, the Jacksons shared with us. This time they shared their controlled grief. The press conference is unwatchable for me. I saw it once, and never again.

We were bereft, ill, stricken, shocked, in disbelief...but we were now The FoB. An unstoppable force. We got our marching orders from the grief stricken but tough Gretchen Jackson: MAKE THE WORLD SAFER FOR HORSES: end horse slaughter, end laminitis, make track surfaces safer.

So that brings us to now. And on we'll go, armed with each other's love and support, plenty of coffee and chocolate. ACN. There is much to do, my beautiful bay colt, and I will do it. I promise.
And as it turns out, your name WILL live forever.
It is God's will, his pleasure in your perfection, your drive, your willingness to carry us all on your back.

BloodHorse, Terry Conway article -- HBO documentary...

Barbaro had good people all around him from the time he was born, and being brought up in that nurturing and trusting way, he responded to that, said producer Grossi. The public invested in the horse because when the horse trusted, it was because people around him trusted. When the horse fought hard it was because the people around him fought hard. It's at the center of the story and why people will continue to remember the good feeling around Barbaro.

AMEN AND AMEN -- That is exactly how God wants it. We are to take care of the animals, the plants, and EACH OTHER.

I hope this goes to DVD. I have not found someone in my circle that has HBO.

###Dear Harriette, your words and wisdom take our collective breath away. Dear FOBs both Silent (which I am for the most part) and Visible, you're here because Barbaro has spoken to your heart. You're working on causes in his behalf - honoring his life and memory. Please take a moment and email Harriette your thoughts and feelings about him, about why you're here after all this time. I believe she said one person simply wrote "Thank God for Barbaro". That one sentence captures what most of us feel for a wide variety of reasons; as many reasons as there are of us. Our efforts would certainly continue without Harriette, but what a void it would create on this board if she were to leave us!! (She is not alone in creating this welcoming, educating and enriching environment where Alex allows us to meet; thank you to all the Others as well). For Harriette to share our Grandfathers' wisdom is a priceless gift - please repay her with a quick email. After all, it's "all Barbaro"!! I BELIEVE

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple.. Please tell ten
friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of
getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

REPOST

I spoke to the aide I have been working with at Ander Crenshaw's office and he said he has definitely co-sponsored. Our great group of Florida callers have been targeting him for 3 weeks as he co-sponsored last year. Please if you have not joined your state group and want to stop the slaughter, do so today. It is working.

There was a radio show in Ocala that aired a piece regarding horse slaughter last week and they interviewed Chris Heyde. This was put together by one of our Florida callers who contacted the station during the media blitz.

For those who have Dish Network, you can order HBO just for the month for $14.95.

I absolutely believe reading Joe everyday will save my soul.

Today, I really NEEDED to read Joe's journal, and there he is, talking about blind dogs in old pickup trucks, exotic food, old friends, Flat Tire beer(??), horses sleeping upside down, cats sleeping with pigs, blind horses who wait for their nightly banana---damn, I am just purely in love with the man. (Sorry Cathy....but I'm sure you're used to hearing this....)
Enjoy, learn and listen to Joe: He never disappoints, and he will teach you many truths: jonna

*** Nancy in CT

Since you are having email issues I guess you did not receive my email to you and some of my frens this morning. In that email I noted that you in particular were working hard on your slaughter issues and didn't have time to write. I noted that I understand that.

You see, frens, and Nancy, if you think this 75 frens is about chocolate you don't know me at all. I have been here everyday for a long long time. I have poured my heart and soul out to this Board. I have cried with you and laughed with you, rejoiced with good news and prayed for your losses.

Since Barbaro died, coming here has given me strength to carry on, the strength of the network of my frens who "get it"
Sometimes coming here day after day and reading of nothing but slaughters and unsuccessful rescues and sick loved ones and dying furbabies is more than my heart can handle. I take on the feelings and hurts of others. I feel the pain ,the grief, the loss..it drags me down.

When I got the idea of the 75 frens it was a way to go back and remember why we are here, the reason each one of us were called. It is a story that needs to be heard. This is my passion.
It has turned in to my platform, my honor.
I feel compelled to tell this story.

Cal is the sweetest man I know, we banter to bring some laughter to the grim business we face everyday. I'm sorry if trying to lighten up the Board offends you.

Your offer I will have to turn down. I have already posted to Friar Tuck and equine-heaven I am taking their hints for me to be a state leader under thought. It will not be part of this
project.

This is the very part about politics I hate..trading favors..you do something for me before I do something for you. My honor is at stake here, it is not for sale or trade.

I love all of you .

Nancy in CT, I too am not trying to offend anyone here, I am sure I have. I try to rally people to call in a manner that may be different than most. Partly because I'm a big Goof, who happens to love horses. I take my call list like anyone else does and do my damnest to make every call.

Please trust me when I say, I RESPECT Your hard work as I do everyone else's. We are all different. But we all are here for the Horse who made Us "GET IT". And I GOT IT BAD.

just spoke to Martin--an aide in Senator Clintons office--he was somewhat encouraging--I told him we need her to co sponsor this bill and she did so in the past--so why not now. I told him I realize there are a lot of imortant issues on her plate but that doesn't mean horses should be slaughtered while she is out on the campaign trail--I implied that I supported her and unless she did something soon she would lose a lot of supporters. He actually took my name and address and was really very nice--he said they were getting alot of calls.
Lets Hope

Cathy Potter,

Thank you for your kind post. I got to thinking about all of us and all that we do last night.

You know, we are not only a Famblee but we are like an old Famblee favorite recipe. Leave an ingredient out, be it a Fan or a cause, and it's no good.

Everyone and every cause needs to be here. Needs attention. It's ALL necessary in the "mix" of horses lives.

Thank you Cathy Potter. I'm going to track down Bart right now and give him the love from his frens!

Harriette,

I wrote my essay to you on the boards but not sure if you got it, so here it is:

I have always considered myself an animal lover. As a kid, I cried for months when I had to read Old Yeller, and avoided Where the Red Fern Grows because I had heard that one of the dogs dies at the end. My sensitive heart couldn’t handle the anguish of the loss. I’d squeeze my eyes shut as tightly as I could to avoid seeing the squirrel that had been run over on the side of the road and pretend that it really wasn’t there; it had been the fleeting dart of a cat paused quickly in the headlights of our car and my eyes were just playing tricks. But I never opened them to make sure.

As childhood transformed into adolescence and then life made its way slowly into adulthood, I became thicker skinned in many ways but I never could develop a harder shell when it came to the animals. I knew now that there was no Santa, no tooth fairy, no Easter bunny who magically hid eggs through the backyard at the birth of spring, but still could convince myself that if I didn’t see the squirrel dead on the side of the road, it didn’t exist. I lived in a world where all of God’s animal creatures were treated well, lived full and long lives, and died peacefully in their sleep when it was time for them to go.

Then along came Barbaro and my world changed forever.

I still cannot explain why I was drawn so furiously into his world. Looking back, meeting Barbaro was like watching an approaching storm, seeing its development on the horizon, facing the ferocity of the wind and rain, hearing the thunderous boom in the sky. Just as quickly as its approach, the storm departs and life settles into the ensuing calm, where everything is fresh and clean but nevermore the same with the aftermath of nature evident in the fallen limbs and scattered leaves all around.

My heart was gripped by the horrors of the realities of those things that I had spent my whole life shutting my eyes to. At first, these atrocities that Barbaro showed me were almost unbearable. After spending 34 years of life insisting that the animals live in utopian-like worlds it was cruelly shattering to learn otherwise. Learning that there was horse slaughter in the very country that portrays the horse as a cultural icon was like seeing the lightning bolt strike my favorite childhood climbing tree. Discovering that beautiful thoroughbreds not able to make enough money for their owners were thrown away like discarded old shoes was like opening my eyes and seeing that it was a dead squirrel on the side of the road, not a fast-moving cat on its way home.

The first few months of this realization almost destroyed me. I spent day and night teetering on the brink of pure existentialism – the feeling that nothing really mattered. I was overwhelmed by a feeling of hopelessness, and the unsettling realization that I had lived for so long in a world that didn’t really exist.

But, as is Barbaro’s way, he softly nudged me and whinnied when I tried to go the other way, as if to say, “follow me friend, we have work to do.” When he lost his valiant fight, it was as if he made a final, forever-statement to me that as much as I wanted to, I could not pretend any longer. My shell is not any thicker, my tears haven’t dried, but I open my eyes to the realities of our world for him and work to make it just a little more like the one I pretended it was.

MORNING REPOST

Everyone, please think about sending a letter like this to your Congressmen and women:

The Honorable Patty Murray
c/o Andrew Rowe
173 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

Re: Slaughter of Horses – Please Co-sponsor S 311

Dear Senator Murray and Mr. Rowe:

As you are no doubt aware Cavel, the Illinois slaughterhouse, was shut down for six days last month, after the Illinois Governor signed legislation banning the slaughter of horses. Cavel started up again, after receiving a TRO from a federal judge.

What is interesting to note is that recently, as U.S. slaughterhouses have decreased in number, the slaughter of horses in Mexico and Canada has risen 240%. What’s happening? As we have been successful at fighting this battle on a state-by-state basis, all we have done is increased the suffering of American horses as they are now enduring even longer trips across the border where they suffer the same fate.

How can we stop this once and for all? There is only one way. We need to enact the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, S 311, which will then make it illegal to transport horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

As you are also aware, the pro-slaughter groups defeated our attempts to pass this legislation last session. This session, the bill is on “hold” in the Senate. The only way to get this legislation passed is for more co-sponsors to step up. Please don’t wait. We need more co-sponsors.

I am asking you to please step forward today – don’t delay – and co-sponsor S311.

** here is a great example of the Barabro effect in action

A couple days ago Lyn Lifshin posted wanting to know if anyone knew where to buy a single issue of the 2 June issue of Bloodhorse. It has an article on her dear Ruffian in it and she hadn't been able to find the issue.

On my way to work, I stopped by a local bookstore to see if they had the issue and sure enough, they did, so I bought it. I emailed Lyn, told her I had it and she gave me her address. I sent it, as a fren no strings attached.. A FOB helping another FOB..

Just now in today's mail..I received from Lyn her book, The Licorice Daughter..how wonderful is that..

It is reported on the forum that Cavel is slaughtering again this morning. If this makes you want to make extra calls, I'm posting the national call/fax list that Gail Vacca usually posts in case you want to call these people as well.

As a member of the PA calling group, I am THRILLED that Casey is on the national call/fax list today. As I posted to the nat'l. group, we in the PA calling group for TWR have been calling Casey for some time & I was told by an aide that Casey is for S. 311, but will not cosponsor because he doesn't want to anger the pro slaughter people who have been calling him. I HOPE EVERYONE WILL CALL CASEY AND LET HIM KNOW WHAT THE OTHER 80% OF THE COUNTRY THINKS ABOUT CAVEL'S SLAUGHTERING HORSES AGAIN TODAY.

Elizabeth -- As I and others in the PA calling group have told Casey, a significant number of these are PENNSYLVANIA HORSES since we are unforutnate enough to have in our state one of the largest suppliers of horse to killer buyers in this country: the infamous New Holland auctions. So there are PENNSYLVANIA OWNERS who are being duped into believing their horses will only be re-sold to good homes, and these are PENNSYLVANIA HORSES that are being driven across our state in double deckers that vioate PENNSYLVANIA LAWS, and these are PENNSYLVANIA HORSES who appear days later on tables in Europe and Japan. We have told our PENNSYLVANIA REPRESENTATIVES all about this -- AND WE HOPE EVERYONE ELSE WILL TOO!!

To Harriette--I sent this to your email address; I am your Fren. I want express to you my gratitude for not only the inspiring contributions you have made to all of us over these many days and months, but also my gratitude for your heartfelt statements regarding the taking in and taking on of energies that weigh down the spirit. Renee, I appreciated very much that you shared your experience with this, as well. Cal--you and Harriette make a great team for encouraging people in a very effective way.
My feelings and reactions are EXACTLY like those expressed by Harriette and Renee. I am not overjoyed to be the way I am, and I greatly admire and wish I could more frequently emulate those who plug on day after day. I can't. I do what I can, when I can, and I feel truly, truly bad that I can't do more. I struggle (and have for years) with depression and anxiety. Medications do not help me (with the exception of an anti anxiety drug I started some months ago after a literal melt down).
I sent this writing to Harriette, I want to share it, in the hope that it will in some way inspire and help others. I became a Silent One because I could not deal with these issues every day, though I dearly wished that I could, and though I did try. I do check in, not every day as I once did--not out of lack of caring, but out of the need to just keep afloat. As I said, I continue to try to do what I can when I can.
With love, admiriation, and respect to all.

Here is what I wrote#######

“Dearest Barbaro”: What Barbaro Means to Me
By: Sue M.
Pittsburg,Pennsylvania
June 5, 2007

Dearest Barbaro:
I can barely say, think, read, or write your name without tears coming to my eyes. When I look at the picture of you on my desk, or see films of you on television, or go through the thick folders of my clippings about you, tears spill down my face. I feel sharp, vibrating pain, as though the cavity where my heart should be holds instead a bird that beats knife-blade wings inside me. And, I feel hollow, as though there is not even sawdust in my torso to hold me in place.
Last night I dreamed about you, Barbaro: you were not in the dream; the dream was about the loss of you. It was chaotic; there was heavy sadness; I was in an equine hospital with blood spattered on the walls and floors, and bandaged horses standing silently with lowered heads.
This hospital was not the pristine and well organized New Bolton Center; it looked like a battlefield hospital. I had gone there to pay tribute to you. Dr. Richardson was there in bloody blue scrubs, his face a mask of grief. I called out to him, “Dr. R.!” I went towards him and hugged him; both of us had tears in our eyes. “You did everything, Dr. R.,” I told him. “You did everything right; it was meant to be.”
The dream swirled into a surreal crowd scene packed with media people, Fans of Barbaro, and some sort of award presentation for Dr. Richardson. Then Harriette Brillianthawk and I were seated at a table with Alex Brown and Peter Brette, having tea and talking about the Fans of Barbaro and what they are doing.
I have tried to make sense of this dream, Barbaro. I am not certain, but I believe that my subconscious was trying to present the battles that are raging in your name, while sparing me the horrors of seeing what is happening to many of our horses. I believe that the dream represented the battle to treat horses humanely, including providing medical care to the sick and injured. I believe that the dream represented the efforts to rescue and provide retirement facilities for horses from all walks of life. I believe that the dream represented the fight to find prevention of and cure for laminitis. I believe that the dream also represented the pitched battle being feverishly fought to end horse slaughter. All of these battles are being fought in your name, Dearest Barbaro. They are being fought because our hearts are broken; because our tears are endless; because the

Page 2
loss of you created a black hole in our hopes and our prayerful attempts to “help” you heal. There are thousands of people in the world who will never recover from watching you break you leg; will never heal from watching you try so hard to heal and to walk again; will never find relief from the pain in their hearts that was caused by your death: the only recovery, the only healing, the only relief will come in actions that honor you by helping other horses.
When you were racing, I knew of your name, and that you were highly regarded. I am not a racing fan, and so I never saw you run until I saw the film clips of your injury at The Preakness. And then, I saw all I needed to see: a brave, strong, beautiful horse, still trying to run on three legs; the right hind dangling sickeningly. I saw Edgar trying to save your life; reining you in, and then supporting your massive body with his tiny body. I saw your put your ears back, wincing in pain and shock; suddenly fragile, and confused about what
had happened. I saw your trust in Edgar; your faith that he knew what was best for you at that time. And, Dearest Barbaro, I started crying then. I started feeling the pain then. I started praying and sending Reiki then. After a year, I haven’t really stopped.
I’m looking at the color picture of you that I cut out of the newspaper, and put on my desk at work. Your ears are pricked; your dark brown forelock is neatly brushed to one side, like the hair of a little boy whose mother got him ready to go to church. Your eyes are deep, dark, and glowing. They are at once heartbreakingly young and innocent and all-knowing beyond your years. Your nose looks soft and velvety—the nose I wanted so much to kiss, just once, to stroke lovingly just once. Your lips are ever so slightly pink, and the tender, fine white hairs are illuminated by sunlight. Your shiny coat is brushed with golden touches of sunlight also. Yes, you were beautiful. The loss of your beauty is a great loss. But your heart and your character were even more beautiful than your physical body. And the loss of that heart that never quit until the pain was too great; the loss of that pure, innocent, brave character that made you incapable of doing one thing in your life that was less than great—those are the losses that are incalculable.
This is my love letter to you, Dearest Barbaro. The tears are streaming again. I sent Reiki to you until my hands were numb; stayed awake praying for you until sleep overtook me at last; woke in the middle of the night and prayed, and sent Reiki again, with tears covering my face. I donated what I could to the Laminitis Fund; to the Barbaro Fund; to wild horse rescue; to the care for a little foal named Twist of Fate. I called my Senators to ask them to support the bill which would end horse slaughter; I called my Representative to praise

Page 3

him for his support; I wrote to the Senators on their websites; I feel that I haven’t done enough, though I have done what I can.
When horse slaughter and transport to slaughter have ended; when laminitis is preventable and curable; when horse racing becomes about strong-legged horses and not about speed and money; when humanity awakes to the power of the Soul and mind of horses and other animals; so much of those events will be because of the way you lived, suffered, and died. All of those accomplishments will be celebrated; most will be linked to your name and to the memory of you. But as time goes by, and people die, and people are born, those of us who lived during your time will still weep at the sight of your pictures and films, at the hearing of your name, at the remembrance of hope, and prayer, and energy healing, and sleepless nights, and caring doctors, and Another Comfortable Night.
Dearest Barbaro, when I die, and pass into the Sweet Bye and Bye, I want to run into God’s field and hug my dogs, kiss my cats, and throw my arms around your neck so that I can kiss your velvet nose.
I love you.

Your earthbound friend,

Sue (F.O. B.—Fan of Barbaro)

**** TIME OUT FRENS

I have been away from the computer for most of the morning..seems like I have caused strife and disharmony when that's the last thing I wanted.

Cal, I am folding.. I'm sending you chocolate, two bags..

I will continue to gather your stories if you send them. If you read what Jonna and Sue wrote you see what I am trying to do..Capture the spirit the love..

What started of as fun now is breaking my heart.

I don't want people trying to take sides..I am everyone's fren here.
I am wearing Glenda's Ben necklace today and Dawn's I get it bracelet. I support the rescues.
I try to do a little of everything..

I've gotten a couple of emails that let me know this is best not to be continued.

I want your stories but I will not ask anymore and please, no one ask on my behalf..

Pennsylvania Fans of Barbaro, we NEED your help! As Shelly and Debra have repeatedly told us, we cannot get these bills to a full vote without MORE COSPONSORSHIP. Pennsylvania is a big Ag state, and we are fighting a tough lobby. WILL YOU HELP US?

We have started a Pennsylvania Strategy like many of the other states have. Our team is NOW 45 strong and we?d like more of you to join us! WE have 10 legislators who have not co-sponsored the bills. That?s about half? Please help us!

We are experiencing success...we secured Representative Pitts co-sponsorship this week.

I am the Pennsylvania State Leader. Please email me if you?d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation. You can email me at Lor's Email Addy.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

So let's get out there and SAVE those horses! Call your REPS and SENATORS...do it in loving memory of our Barbaro and all the nameless, faceless horses being trucked into Mexico and Canada and dying brutally...Please contact me and join our team if you live in Pennsylvania and want to help rescue horses from slaughter.

I GET IT.

Harriette, I am utterly without words. DON'T YOU DARE Send the chocolate. Not a soul on this board won a damn thing. We all just lost.

In case anyone couldn't guess what Harriette and I were trying to do here, well here is the explaination to the best of my ability.
She approached me with the choc. for Barbaro bet. I agreed to go along with it, in hopes that she could get enough material together to compile a book, with the proceedes going to Barbaro fund. Doesn't anyone get it. Is your way the only way?

Nancy, e-mail no longer neccessary.

Done also.

AFTERNOON REPOST
Note:
FsOB: We got 3, count 'em 3 House co-sponsors yesterday, in states with active calling groups...
Coincidence???

REPOST

Oh, for cryin' out loud!!!!! It's not like she was asking for MONEY, the way SOOOO many people do on this board...
She wasn't whacking us over the head, day in and day out, with HER "agenda", the way SOOOOO many people do on this board.

As long as I live, I will NEVER understand people who purposely hurt others who are DOING GOOD WORKS.

WHO OWNS THIS BOARD??? Not me and not YOU. None of us.

There is room for EVERYONE on this board (thank you Elizabeth and others of you who KEEP TRYING TO POINT THAT OUT!) If you have a problem with that, well then----> that is YOUR PROBLEM!

Harriette and Cal
Oh NO!!!! Neither of you are allowed to leave. We NEED both of you...

I was just going to e-mail Harriette asking if all these personal stories could be compiled into a book form and sold to raise money for the Laminitis or Barbaro fund. I think the first page should be a picture of Cal and Harriette. (Harriette you HAVE to be dressed in your tiara, with your wand, mouth smothered in chocolate, sitting at your computer.)
I personally would LOVE a copy of this compilation. This has been an amazing time and experience for me and I believe this pro
