Barbaro Updates: 308

updates are now here.

Update 2054: Shake The Bank, trained by Graham Motion, was employed as a rabbit for Better Talk Now to great effect a couple of years ago. He has since been discharged of that role and today ran for the first time on his own merits. He was second in a stake at Monmouth!

Update 2053: A lovely morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had nothing to do but decided to go in and see Redaspen after her race. She looked well, if not a little tired. She had been walking a little this morning and was then out grazing for an hour. A nice relaxing day after her major effort. Tim was in good form. I saw Graham Motion at the gas station after leaving Fair Hill, our conversation started with how well Redaspen had performed yesterday.

Update 2052: Flashy Bull, who ran in the Derby last year (not very well), seems to be finding his best form now as a four year old. He won the feature race of the day, the Grade 1 Foster: Flashy Bull Charges to Rich Foster Triumph.

Redaspen's second yesterday looks even better given they broke the track record and she was giving the field 2 pounds: Karen's Caper Sets Monmouth Mark in Eatontown.

Update 2051: Redaspen ran a huge race today at Monmouth in defeat. She was beaten three quarters of a length by Karen's Caper, but was closing well. This was a big step up for her today and she really came through. She was, as usual, at the back going into the final turn. She had to be switched wide for running room, and ran them all down aside from one. A great performance.

Chelokee won the Northern Dancer Stakes under Ramon Dominguez (Chelokee Won't Give In, Wins Northern Dancer BC). He was headed at the eighth pole and it was sheer determination that got him in front at the wire. A nice result for sure.

I was at Delaware Park watching the races. It was a great day to be at the races with a couple of stakes carded at Delaware.

Update 2050: Hard Spun is getting a short break after his triple crown exploits, he was one of only two horse to compete in all three races: Hard Spun earns some time off track: After three legs of Triple Crown, DelPark-based horse won't race again before August.

Windedoc spotted Larry Jones the sunday following the Belmont: Breakfast at Belmont, Sunday, excerpt:

In the paddock I notice Larry JOnes walking quickly, his familiar cowboy hat on. I run to catch up to him. I want to thank him for running his horse in all legs of the TCs. He is too fast for me & disappears down to the jockeys' quarters & back up with the owner's silks, which have been washed & pressed. I realize he is trying to avoid the press & has raced back to the barn where Hard Spun is waiting to ship out. But Larry looks exhausted, his stride that of a very tired, disappointed individual. The rest of the morining limps on. most employeees too tired to converse.

Update 2049: A bright morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had four to ride. First out was Mediman. She went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a half. She seems in good form. Tim stayed behind in the barn, getting Redaspen ready for her trip to Monmouth. Next out was Nautical Agent. She went across the fields. It was her first day out since her race at Delaware Park. She felt great. I also saw two foxes who alertly dove into the woods as Nautical Agent and I got close. Third set was Real Lace. She went to the Tapeta track and literally drug me around for a mile and a half. I was pretty exhausted by the time we pulled up. Tim went with us on Gator Nation. Gator looked good passing me going down the lane. Finally I rode Linda's Pistol. He went to the gate, he is running on monday and needed a six month gate card. He was a little reluctant to load, but mostly fine. He galloped around very nicely. As we were walking home he dropped his head, I assumed to pick some grass. Then he went to his knees, at this point I hopped off. Then he went down ... and rolled!

Update 2048: Churchill Downs hosts the marquee Grade 1 stake today, the Stephen Foster: Master Command sets sights on first Grade 1 win in Stephen Foster. The undercard includes Chelokee's return to the races after winning the Barbaro Stakes on the Preakness undercard. Of course our interests lie at Monmouth where Redaspen will be put to a major test for her first start in a graded stakes.

Good morning, all!

A safe and successful trip to Chelokee and Redaspen, particularly, and safe travels to all racing this weekend.

Last night I finally took the time to watch the DelPk celebration DVD. Wow. What a professional job. I was in tears the minute I saw the pictures of our beautiful boy. I've been such a small part of all this, but you guys have been totally amazing. Just amazing.

Thanks to Alex for bringing us all together. We are a powerful group, each of us contributing in his or her own way, and we WILL prevail.

Amy, great great job with the DVD. It's a keeper! And Sharon, what a fantastic job you and your team(s) did to pull off such a fabulous event. Thank you just doesn't suffice.

Good morning, all.

Safe racing today to all. And go Redaspen and Chelokee!

On Forum, on the Anti-Slaughter thread, you will find a discussion about Cavel. Apparently the Kingdom of Belgium sent a letter to the judge on the Cavel TRO case expressing its interest in the judicial and legislative proceedings, and implying that the outcome could affect Belgium's trade decisions with the US.

A partial list of Belgian-owned companies operating in the US follows.

Effective immediately, I am boycotting all products and services Belgian and will be sending my own reply to the Kingdom of Belgium. If they want to eat horse so badly, let them do their own dirty work on their own soil.

Safe races for Chelokee and Red Aspen today--for all of them, of course. A sweet day for Cowboy, Nick and the LA Mare....I know she has a name now:::but duh: someone remind me. Courage for all on the front lines. On we march.

A wonderful Father's Day to the dads on the TWR boards...and for those who support their wives and SO's, The Aunties.

All is well here with the Horde: Jessie continues to improve and thrive. She has the itchies on her shaved area...so we'll be getting something for that. Otherwise, she's great.

So, keep on marching. We're here. We get it...

Carlspur, horse of iron, returns to Monticello Raceway on Tuesday

You heard of Barbaro but chances are you never heard of Carlspur. He didn't win anything as big as the Kentucky Derby. He didn't have an entire nation praying for his return to health.

No, Carlspur didn't have all that. But like Barbaro, the 2006 Derby champ who died after a courageous fight, Carlspur had a lot of people rooting like hell for him.

Carlspur was always something of an underdog in harness racing. He won 71 races in 251 starts with a purse total of $882,361. Yet he never got the recognition he deserved. He started turning it on as a 4-year-old, a year after being purchased by a group called the Salerno-Trezza Partners 25. He set a Meadowlands record for 7-year-olds by running 1:49.3. As a 9-year-old he went 48-flat, at the time one-fifth off the world record, the fastest time of the day on the stakes-heavy Hambletonian card.

There was never anything resembling a media crush. Co-owner Tom Trezza still finds it perplexing and amazing that he didn't hear from a single journalist after Carlspur lit up the clock on Hambo day. But his handlers fell in love with Carlspur long before that: his even temperament, his guts that helped him thrive as a 10-year-old. "Just a warrior,'' Trezza says. "He fights every fight and he's done it over six, seven, eight years.''

About the only place Carlspur got his due publicly was at Monticello Raceway. About 20 of his starts have been at Monticello. Our Sullivan County track named Carlspur Horse of the Year last year.

Three days later, Carlspur was gravely ill.

Trezza was at a Nets' game on Nov. 1 when he got a call from co-owner Tony Salerno. It's Carlspur. His groom had looked into Carlspur's stall around 7 p.m., only to find him in obvious pain. Soon Carlspur was on his way to New Bolton Center near Philadelphia, same facility that cared for Barbaro, with a bad case of colic.

"We were really concerned about him not surviving the drive down,'' Trezza says.

Carlspur underwent a two-hour surgery. His stomach was cut open and his insides removed. The main problem was his colon displaced by 90 degrees. The owners were just happy that Carlspur was alive. They were thinking how they wanted to find him a good home for retirement.

They certainly weren't counting on him returning to the track.

But Carlspur, now 11, was jogging by March.

He gave his handlers another scare in April, showing the same symptoms as his first bout with colic. But Carlspur was fine after medication and passing manure.

"He slowly started returning to his old self,'' Trezza says. "He was bored. He wanted to get back to work.''

Carlspur ran a qualifier eight days ago at Freehold Raceway. He won by 14 lengths in 1:58.0.

On Tuesday he returns to Monticello, his adopted home. Trezza has fielded a lot of calls the past seven months from folks wishing Carlspur well.

"I'm starting to feel a little connection to Barbaro based on so many people wanting (Carlspur) back,'' Trezza says.

Sometimes it takes tragedy to define our love. Carlspur's official comeback race will take place in a quiet setting in the Catskills. But you can bet people finally will be cheering the old warrior.

Here's the latest on Anna House:

Thanks to the contributions of many FOBs, we reached the goal of donating 100,000 American Express points to buy airfare to the '08 Oaks/Derby; this trip will be part of the auction at the event.

Two FOBs (Anna and Glenda)are donating their artwork (a drawing and jewelry) to be auctioned at the benefit in August in Saratoga.

FOB Bonnie is leading the call for the Fans of Barbaro to buy a full-page ad in the benefit program. She's going to try to work with Alex to adapt ">this flyer into a full-page ad. The ad will cost $600 (to benefit Anna House) and Bonnie will soon coordinate donations to pay for the ad.

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, I lit a candle on Gratefulness early yesterday evening and was saddened to see that our Sweet Prince was at the #2 position. I don't know who Kaleb is, he was at #1.

To Susan E., I have the same sentiments and was on a virtual tirade here and at work yesterday AM. I promise to work on another letter to the Belgian Tourist Board this weekend. They never dignified my prior letter earlier this year with any correspondence. So I have a request to all FsOB: This weekend, when you post here, would you please give the name and address of the daily newspaper that serves your community or metropolitan area? I want to send copies of my letter to the papers, imploring folks to boycott Belgian goods until they stop killing our horses. (They could always run a beef slaughterhouse at Cavel, as noted by the attorney representing the State of IL in the Federal hearing on 06/14.)

And to David, Lee, and any FsOB who are Dads, wishing you a great Father's Day tomorrow! Peace, RMH

ALEX!!!lol, lol, lol!!! Except as 'not a rider' of horses, probably NOT funny!!! I just read your "Morning at Fair Hill' accounting...and saw how your horse decided to have a 'roll' while you were still on top!!! Now! as a 'not rider' of horses...THAT is something I've certainly never thought of them doing!!!! omgosh!!!

Also, haven't had time...I am to be counted among those who will be very anxious to read your BOOK:)

Thanks UnkleAlexBrown, thanks again and again for being here and affording us this most wonderful table to sit around....and as always thanks so much for the 'visual' accountings of your Morning's at Fair Hill:)

Posted by: Anna in Tx at June 16, 2007 4:42 PM

Good Morning Fambleeee!

Hay, unklealexbrown. Good job you bailed when Pistol decided to take a roll. Silly Pistol!!! you aren't sposta roll with a rider. It's much more civilized to say "may I have a quick dismount pleeze? I got sumpthin to do. jump back on in a minit" Naughty BOY!

Best of luck to RedAspen and Chelokee. Be safe big girl and big boy!

Lovely story on Carlspur, MJ. I hope his next race is a safe one, and hope that he'll soon be living the life of a pampered, retired champion that he is and deserves.

Don't get that one, really, but will keep good thoughts for his safety and good health.

###Nina Hope your birthday was wonderful. Thought you were going to see a new vet?? Can't tell anything by feeling the bladder, except that it's either full or not. The new food will cause her to "puddle" more, that's part of the design of the food to get rid of her crystals. If it's excessive, she should be seen again. Maybe more bloodwork. Not sure that films will be of use.

Must be off and running...anyone want to paint my house? no? me either.

Will check in later
Love to all

### Kathy..... Yeah when Nick fell, he was right by the fence and the fence stopped him from falling all the way down so that was a good thing. He seems OK but they said that he needed a huge huge amount of care......

SMITHFIELD FOODS: AMERICA'S CAVEL

Just found this at Http://www.equuseditorial.com/equus/slaughtereurope.html

"Animex (Poland) and Smithfield Foods (USA)
Ironically, Poland, a verdant agricultural country known for its prized Arabian horses — and where horsemeat is not eaten — is Europe’s largest supplier of live horses to abattoirs, especially to Italy, according to various animal welfare organizations across the Internet. Poland’s largest pork producer, Animex S.A. (Warsaw)[5] was founded in 1951 and has always been a major sponsor of that country’s historic annual horse auction, Polish Prestige.[6]

In 1999, Animex was acquired by the world’s largest hog feedlot and slaughter operation, the American conglomerate Smithfield Foods.[7] This acquisition has revolutionized the Polish farming community and economy while leading the way in live export of horses for slaughter (which both Smithfield and Animex do not advertise on their websites). Robert Kennedy, Jr., and Tracy
Worcester write about the reality of Smithfield's Poland in "Smithfield's Invasion of Poland," reprinted online at Animal Welfare Institute.[8]

Horses are herded together on trucks and transported long distances to abattoirs throughout Europe — as far south as the Island of Sardinia, Italy, via ferry — with many horses injured or dying en route."

ALEX! Yikes! There is a film on You Tube...I'll try to find it for you, but it has not one but two different tapes of a rider with a dressage horse (i think) who just refuses to move. At all! Not forward, not back. And then, it rolls, and lays on the ground, fully tacked up, just to have a little tantrum...God bless the rider who is patient, and at several points, just sits on the laid-down horse and waits....talk about a hissy-fit!

PS the Wiki site is great. You are such a blessing to all of us FoBs and the horses who are all waiting to be released from the threat of slaughter...what would we do without this site, the "other board," and now the wiki site... You Are the Best!!!

Hope that doesn't happen too often: love to hear your tales, Unkle Alex....

Nancy Lewis and all,

Don't post here often, but try to read every day. Your comments on Smithfield caught my eye, so I checked out their website to find the list of their brands before I head out to grocery store to NOT buy those products. Also found this on their website:

"Smithfield Foods, Paula Deen Join Forces To Encourage Families to Eat Meals Together

NEW YORK (September 19, 2006)Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced today that celebrity cook, restaurateur, author and TV personality Paula Deen has selected the company in an exclusive partnership aimed at promoting meals that encourage families to spend more time eating together. . . .

Deen said she chose Smithfield as her partner in this joint effort, because Ive been using Smithfield products for years. This is a company I can trust.

Paula Deen is one of the hottest names in the food industry right now. Maybe we should send her the information about Smithfield you posted. What do you think? Think she knows about the horse slaughter connection and the "company she can trust"?

Lissa

Posted by: Lissa in PA at June 16, 2007 5:35 PM

Lissa in PA: I think contacting Paula Deen is a great idea. I'm going to send her a copy of what I just sent to Smithfield Foods.

My message to them is below. I sent it to information@smithfieldfoods.com since Smithfield Foods is the corporate owner of Animex. Also, someone on the threads said the message they sent to an international e-mail address bounced back.

I was appalled to find out that Smithfield Foods, through its subsidiary Animex, is one of the if not the, largest slaughterer of horses in Europe. 80% of Americans are opposed to the slaughter of horses, and I and many others, will do our best to (i) make sure 80% of Americans know about your company's despicable involvement, (ii) to implement an international boycott of all Smithfield Foods products until such time as the company divests itself of Animex and any connection to the horse slaughter business.

Sincerely,

Nancy R. Lewis

HELLO FOB!!

For those who know about the walk against horse slaughter we are planning....
PLEASE CHECK OUT POST 10836.59 and help us pick our name!!!!
Also, if you would like to participate, please add your name and state. Hopefully this week after some weekend FOB brainstorming we will begin to organize and finalize details. WE NEED AS MUCH PUBLICITY AND ATTENTION AS WE CAN GET!!

America needs to know what is happening to our horses and right now I still have too many people tell me they don't know horses are being slaughtered.
Help us pick our name. Forgive the couple suggestions from my Vegas buddies, they thought they were helping out.

Is Paula Deen the lady they broadcast at Walmart stores?

Posted by: Anna in Tx at June 16, 2007 6:23 PM

Hi Maribel !

Yes, that is amazing and wonderful about Akaka. I've spoken with their office on NUMEROUS occasions !

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at June 16, 2007 6:30 PM

Anna in TX -- Here's the link to the contact page of Paula Deen's site which has her picture:
http://pauladeen.com/http/main_cont.html

So far as I can tell, Paula Deen is a very nice woman & she probably has no idea she has tied her wagon to a company that slaughters horses, so we should give her the benefit of the doubt. In my message to her, I said I was sure she had no idea that Smithfield Foods slaughters horses, & said I was sure she would not want her good name associated with horse slaughter. I told her 80% of Americans oppose horse slaughter & that I was certain she was firmly in that 80%.

I think that is the kind of approach that will be more likely to make her do what we want which is sever her relationship with Smithfield Foods.

Posted by: Nancy Lewis at June 16, 2007 6:37 PM

Nancy, I saw her face yesterday on a magazine- but at Walmart I've only heard a voice. Wondered if it was her.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at June 16, 2007 6:40 PM

Nancy, I was also kind. I don't think we should EVER attack anybody, especially if we don't know what their stand is. I try to be diplomatic. It goes back to the old saying, "You attract more flies with sugar then you do with vinegar."

VICTORINA Racing TODAY! Arlington Race 9, approximately 5 pm EDT (her first time on artificial surface...)

------------
Harry Aleo's Victorina Tops Field for Chicago Breeders' Cup Handicap
by Blood-Horse Staff
Date Posted: June 14, 2007

Victorina will confront 10 rivals when she heads postward as the 116-pound highweight in the $175,000 Chicago Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. III) at Arlington Park June 16. The race for fillies and mares, which includes $75,000 from the Breeders’ Cup Fund for eligible horses, will be contested over Arlington’s Polytrack main track.

Greg Gilchrist trains Victorina for owner Harry Aleo, the same connections of the ill-fated 2005 champion sprinter Lost in the Fog and current sprinting sensation Smokey Stover. Jockey Aaron Gryder, who rides Smokey Stover, takes the mount aboard Victorina from jockey Russell Baze, who is vacationing with his family in Europe.
Victorina has won five stakes, including the Azalea Breeders’ Cup (gr. III) at Calder Race Course’s 2006 Summit of Speed. The 4-year-old-daughter of Delaware Township won her only previous start in Illinois, the 2006 Meafara Stakes at Hawthorne Race Course. Victorina has raced at eight different tracks in career. The Chicago Breeders’ Cup will be Victorina’s first start at Arlington and first over a synthetic surface.

Victorina was unable to overcome an awkward start and finished fourth as the 8-5 in the Distaff Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. III) at Aqueduct March 24. Victorina entered the Distaff Breeders’ Cup off a win in the Princess of Palms Handicap at Turf Paradise.

Ten others have been entered in the Chicago Breeders’ Cup, including Coolwind, who is seeking her second straight win at Arlington, having won a third-level allowance race in her last start. Last summer, the 4-year-old daughter of Forest Wildcat won the Sweetest Chant Stakes and ran second in the Arlington Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. III).

Alex, thanks for the article about my favorite 3 year old colt, Hard Spun. It's nice to hear his connections talk about him with so much affection and respect. Hard Spun, enjoy your vacation. I'll be here waiting for you!

Posted by: Susan E. at June 16, 2007 7:27 PM

Thanks for the update Alex,

I had read an article last week in which Larry Jones criticized Garrett Gomez for holding Hard Spun back too long ...that coming on the heels of firing Mario Pino for letting him go too soon.

It left a bad taste in my mouth forr Larry Jones, who I had been rooting for throughout the TC (actually Hard Spun)....but I don't know enough about horse racing to judge whether it was just sour grapes or if he had a legitimate beef.

Even if so, I would think he'd be more discreet in what he said to the press.

Can anyone else chime in here and give an opinion. Was he right in being critical of the rides?

Posted by: Smitty at June 16, 2007 7:38 PM

Hard Spun is still my favorite colt this year. I think, Smitty, that if his trainer criticizes his jockeys too loudly, he'll be seen as un-pleasable.
But that's just my take on it. I think HS was just tuckered out by the time the Belmont was run.

HOLD THE PRESSES -- GAIL VACCA TELLS ME THE INFO FROM THE SITES I POSTED IS OUTDATED:

Anna in Tx, I'm waiting for further word from Gail & I'll tell her to cross post here. FYI, this is info from Viva's site which certainly indicates it is still going on. Nothing would make me happier than to find out this info is wrong, so let's hope that is the case:

http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/horses/briefing.htm

"Journey to Death
The live Export of horses for meat from Poland

Each year, around 30,000 horses are exported from Central and Eastern Europe for slaughter in Italy, France and Belgium in what can fairly be described as one of the cruellest and least regulated aspects of Europe’s live animal trade....."

(Note: Sections deleted.)

"Who owns the trade?
The major registered horse traders in Poland are: Animex SA Warsaw (Owned by Smithfields Foods USA) and Cosmos Czestochowa. The average price a horse fetches is £250."

The following needs comments:

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at June 16, 2007 8:13 PM

Since I cited Viva as a source for info on possible slaughter of horses in Europe by Smithfield Foods and since TWR is constantly monitored by pro horse slaughter groups, I will point out that TWR is a site for ending horse slaughter. TWR is part of the mainstream American movement to end horse slaughter in this country and does not promote vegaterianism as Viva does.

Barb AZ,

I grew up in a VERY small town in PA near Selinsgrove (Susquehanna University is probably the most recognizable thing there). I've lived in the Carlisle area for the past 17 years. One of my best friends from high school went to Indiana U of PA; hard to believe that was nearing 20 years ago!

GOOD NEWS FROM GAIL VACCA (that is until the end):

Cross post:

The Viva document must be several years old.

The AWI document is about Smithfield's factory hog farm operations in Poland.

I found the same documents years ago, and freaked. I called Chris Heyde at AWI/SAPL and he explained that Smithfield dissolved the horse slaughter operations that Animex once operated.

That said, the export of live horses throughout the EU is a huge problem. Transport is better regulated in the EU than here in the US, but even so, horses are still transported thousands of miles under horrible conditions.

Nancy Lewis, thanks for checking into the Smithfield connection. As I understand it, Smithfield does not now own and does not now participate in horse slaughter in Europe or the US, and as far as we know, does not include horsemeat in its products on any continent?

Posted by: Susan E. at June 16, 2007 8:29 PM

Susan E -- That is what Chris Heyde says and Chris Heyde would know.

I am going to follow up with Smithfield and tell them how glad I was to hear that they had dissolved the horse slaughter operations of Animex after they acquired it.

Letter I just emailed to anna, angela & sherry:

To all the Congresspersons (Senators and Representatives) of the 110th Congress:

You are receiving this message because you have not yet signed on to be a cosponsor of S 311 / HR 503, an Amendment to the American Horse Protection Act, that will ban horse slaughter in the United States for human consumption in other countries and - most importantly - will prohibit export of American horses for such purposes.

Of course you are so focused on immigration and the war that you probably have not directed much time/energy to this issue. I beg you to make the time to consider this. Then you can get back to what many consider more important issues.

I have been aware of the horse slaughter industry and the persistent efforts to shut it down for many years, because I get alerts from the Humane Society of the United States. However, I am not contacting you on behalf of any organization; am simply a lifelong horselover and horse owner. And I know the profound difference between humane euthanasia and what a horse endures on the trip to, and at, the slaughterhouse. I work together with many other concerned people (Fans of Barbaro) who gather at and gain information from an internet website www,timwoolleyracing.com - and I know that some of us will be distributing this letter and others from likeminded people.

I have thought long and hard what to say to you ladies and gentlemen. I know you are getting many mixed messages on the subject. While some of you have previously supported HR 503 and S 1915 (last session’s numbers for the bills that this session are HR 503 and S 311), some of you have opposed the prior bills and some of you are members of Congress for the first time and have not previously taken a public position on the issue.

I have been calling and talking to staff in your office until I am blue in the face. I don’t know what to say to make you come on board to cosponsor HR 503 / S 311. This is the best I can do - I hope it may open some minds. It is certainly not a form letter, nor will you get another quite like it.

To those who cosponsored HR 503 in the House, or S 1915 [last session’s number for the present S 311) in the Senate, last session: IT IS NOT ENOUGH to say "I support the Bill and will vote for it when it comes up." Although S 311 came out of the Senate Commerce Committee without amendments, there is a "hold" on the Bill and without a substantial greater number of cosponsors, it will never come to a vote on the Senate floor. And while HR 503 passed the House last session, this session it finds itself in an "unfriendly" Committee and thus may never see the light of day (like what happened to S 1915 in the Senate last session). The best chance for the slaughter ban to pass, is to pass the Senate and then be moved directly to the House for a vote - to heck with the House committees. And our strategists tell us that without sufficient VISIBLE support in the House by way of COSPONSORS, S 311 is unlikely to progress in the Senate. YOU FORMER COSPONSORS DO NOT WANT ANOTHER SESSION TO EXPIRE WITHOUT PASSING THIS BILL - DO YOU?

To those who have opposed anti horse slaughter legislation in the past: Circumstances have drastically changed since last time you had a chance to review this issue. Since last time it was presented to you, both Texas slaughterhouses have been shut down (since late this past January) by a federal court decision upholding the Texas State law banning the practice; and Illinois, where the last working horse slaughter house for human consumption abroad is located, has passed a State law (HB 1711) banning the industry that the Governor of Illinois signed just this past May 24th; however the Illinois plant remains open [presently until 6/28/07] per a TRO against enforcement of the new Illinois law, pending completion of federal litigation of its constitutionality - and before that, the Illinois plant was closed during part of this year by a separate federal court order that had been stayed pending appeal. Why am I pointing this out? Because it means that the horse slaughter industry did not cease to exist; it merely moved out of the country. Horse slaughter for human consumption abroad still goes on even when the plants here are closed; the killer buyers simply transport them across our borders to plants in Canada and Mexico - where there are no safeguards in place for the welfare of the horses. PLEASE have a staffer check the USDA statistics (from the official US government website) on export of horses for slaughter during the first quarter this year compared to the first quarter last year. The number has more than quadrupled! I point this out to demonstrate that with the closing of the slaughterhouses within this country, horses are being transported even greater distances and exported to an even more brutal end with no US safeguards in place. This alone should make you rethink your previous position, if you previously were against a horse slaughter ban.

To those who are in Congress for your first term: What a great and awesome responsibility! I tip my hat to you. PLEASE take the time to familiarize yourself with the issue, via staff that you rely on. I am confident that the materials and links presented by other antislaughter people will give you the information you need to make the right decision.

* * * * * * * * *

Others have sent and still more will be sending you resource materials and information, including graphic visual links. I rely on others to furnish the factual materials - including how little federal taxes were paid by the foreign businesses; how the vast majority of the horses killed are NOT old and sick; how blind horses and pregnant mares are coming to the slaughter floor (two mares gave birth at the slaughterhouse in Illinois within the past month) - in violation of existing rules and regulations; how the meat is "processed" as an expensive delicacy overseas, NOT used for starving poor people; how, because horses are not considered food in the U.S., there is no regulation of the drugs in their systems when they are slaughtered - horses routinely are treated with a host of dewormers and drugs that are labeled "not to be used on horses to be used for food" - and the list goes on. As I said, others will provide materials on those topics.

I just want to point out a few things you may not have thought about, that may answer a few legitimate, rational questions and concerns you may have.

First - I want you to understand WHY you have not heard from the horse rescue organizations who, with their networks of foster homes and adoption programs, will be able to assimilate all those horses who will not be slaughtered, and who are not in need of humane euthanasia due to quality-of-life concerns. These rescues are federal 501(c)(3) not for profit corporations, forbidden by federal law written into their charters, from lobbying. They are not speaking up for fear of having their charters revoked. But they are out there, and can and will absorb the unslaughtered.

Second - all we want is to spare the horses. I am not a vegetarian and am not asking to stop the meat industry in this country - only the horses, that we here do NOT eat. Horses have a different kind of sensibility than other critters, as anyone who knows them, must know.

As I said, I have been talking to your staff until I am blue in the face and am at a loss what else to say or do to convince you to cosponsor. I hope that this sincere plea will get through to some of you and that you will decide to do the right thing - cosponsor HR 503 / S 311 NOW to end this brutal business once and for all.

Thank you on behalf of the horses.

And NOW I'm off for my weekend trip/trailride. Too guilty to leave without getting this emailed off to our ambassadors to Washinton DC. May everybody have a good weekend and may all the horses and riders on and off the track be safe.

Hi, FOB's!

###
Am catching up on posts - got home from showing Jodie around at Fair Hill, Kennett Florist and New Bolton. Here goes:

Alex and Jodie talked for a long time - Alex talked about his book - got to finally meet Basil...sweet dog...REALLY sweet dog.

The same Michael Matz horse who was in the one fenced area two weeks ago was there again today...it greeted us and is soooo beautiful.

Luke was outside today...got to spend some time with him...I told him his FOB "fan club" sends their love and LOTSA HUGS...he is such a sweetheart...he was back in his stall later in the morning, and Jodie and I stood outside under his window - he put his head on my shoulder and just breathed...it was heaven. Simply heaven.

Jodie had the same look on her face as Skyler, Deb Anderson and Sherry had when they went to Fair Hill...bliss.

Saw Nautical Agent - was grazing outdoors this morning, got to speak briefly with Mike and then Jodie arrived.

Real Lace and Mediman were very affectionate today - Real Lace, especially. They both LOVED all the attention we were giving them...

Met a new horse today - Alex is the name correct? Cobra King...am not sure I saw it correctly, but she was another love.

We went down to the track - the weather was perfect today - just a little bit humid, but the sun was out and it was just beautiful this morning.

I took Jodie to New Bolton - we got to see the Memorial Bench and Kathy Freeborn did a beautiful job with the gardening. It was very emotional for both of us. Jodie was soaking it all in.

We went to Kennett Florist - Rachel and Alie were there and they took us in the back to look at Mr. Jackson's Father's Day basket and cards. They both are beautiful and I think he will enjoy being remembered by such a wonderful group of people. Alie and Rachel, thank you so much for showing us how you work your magic.

We ate lunch at Newtons in the center of Kennett Square and then did some "sidewalk shopping". Jodie is a sweet, compassionate person and it was evident that the horses loved her.

Alex and Tim, thank you for letting me come (again) and letting me show Jodie around today. Its a little piece of heaven. Now I'm ready for a nap.

Take care everybody. I am waiting to hear about Red Aspen's race today.

My knee is finally improving, thank you for asking. I am a month and a half out from surgery. They put me on Celebrex about a week and a half ago, and I can tell a difference. Of course, with my "main squeeze's" facial fractures/reconstructive surgery, I have been doing way too much of the barn chores, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. He is turning a corner also. The surgeon did a great job on the exterior incision. Life kinda just goes on...

Posted by: Susan E. at June 16, 2007 11:14 PM

Just came home and first thing I did was check on Chelokee. That Chelokee is one competitive horse. Congrats to Michael and Peter on the win. At Bloodhorse you can see the video of the race. They said this was Chelokee's first graded stakes victory. I thought the Barbaro Stakes was his first graded stakes win?

Barbaro, been thinking about you today and how much you are missed. I love you and think you are the greatest!!!! Hugs, hugs, hugs:)

Oh my Alex! I just read about Linda's Pistol rolling in the grass. Is it normal for a horse to do this when they knew they have a rider?

Awww, thanks. Could have used the help. Our little 2 year old Arabian kicked him in the face - ouch. But he is on the mend. but I sure could have used the help there for a week or two...hard to find people to help you do the morning feeding before you go to work at 6:30 AM! Actually, it was really peaceful, so it all worked out.

You are horse mommy sound like pretty good buds. I am happy for you.

How is the senate going to honor Barbaro? Just ran across it. Its Bill 32 I think.

Posted by: sandra at June 17, 2007 2:40 AM

Here's my horsey humor for the week:

How many horsepersons does it take to change a light bulb?

Western pleasure riders: Oh, my God! Someone change that bulb; my silver
and spangles have to sparkle, and my diamond studs need to flash in the light,
and the highlighter on Old Peanut Head's nose absolutely, positively must
look shiny! You without all the silver on your saddle; obviously you
can't ride; you change it.

Endurance rider: Light bulb? Do you mind, I'm trying to get my horse's
pulse/respiration/ hydration down to respectable levels. Then, I have
another 50 miles to go before I can even think about changing a light
bulb.

Dressage queen: Change a light bulb? Are you joking? I couldn't subject
myself to such a menial task. Change it yourself. Oh, and wash your hands
when you are finished. The very idea!

Classical dressage queen: These things must be approached slowly, with
great patience, and adherence to the principles laid down by the classical
masters, otherwise the light bulb will not attain its true potential, and
will forever be in the shadow of its true self. And, never, ever use any
type of gadget when changing the light bulb; that is an offense to the
principles of classical light bulb changing.

Eventers: Wuss! I'll change it as soon as my arm is out of this sling,
broken after falling off at that large stone wall while riding Hell Bent
for Leather cross country. Until then, deal with the dark; it'll put hair on
your chest. Only dressage riders need lights, anyway.

Natural horseman: You must instill respect in the light bulb using my easy
to follow instructions on the "Light Bulb Dynamics" video set, available
for only $179.00 on my Web site, so that it sees you as the Alpha light bulb.
Once you have done that, you will find there is really no need to change
the light bulb at all, but that the light bulb will, with very little coaxing
from you, when you use my patented "Light Bulb Coaxer" for only $99.00,
behave as all good light bulbs should.

Hunter rider: Well, I'm waiting for my trainer to tell me exactly how, but
he's changing light bulbs somewhere else right now.

Back yard horse person: Do I have to do everything?? !! Oh yeah, I guess I
do. Well, I'll get to it as soon as I'm done mucking stalls, cleaning and
filling the water tank, cleaning and filling the water buckets, raking and
sweeping, stacking the hay, setting up for night feeding, cleaning my
tack, picking out manure from the paddock, brushing and exercising the horses,
and whatever else needs to be done.

Thoroughbred: Who me? Do what? I'm scared of light bulbs! I'm outta' here!

Arabian: Someone else do it. It might get my silky mane dirty and besides,
who's gonna read me the instructions?

Quarter horse: Put all the bulbs in a pen and tell me which one you want.

Shetland: Give it to me. I'll kill it and then we won't have to worry
about it anymore.

Friesian: I would, but I can't see where I'm going from behind all this
mane.

Warmblood: Is the 2nd Level Instruction Packet in English? Doesn't anyone
realize that I was sold for $75,000 as a yearling, but only because my
hocks are bad, otherwise I would be worth $100,000? I am NOT changing light
bulbs. Get the TB back here and make him do it.

Morgan: Me! Me! Me! P-l-e-e-e-a- s-e let me! Just watch; I know how, really
I do! And, when I'm done, we can go over to the neighbors' yard and chase
their cats!

Appaloosa: Ya'll are a bunch of losers. We don't need to change the light
bulb; I ain't scared of the dark. And, someone stop that damn Morgan from
jumping up and down before I double barrel 'im.

Haflinger: That thing I ate was a light bulb?

sweeping, stacking the hay, setting up for night feeding, cleaning my

LAURIE H. AND MARIBEL,

Wow, I just came on the board--and saw both your posts.
I've had a very draining day today, and boy did your posts make me feel better.

Your kind compliments mean so very much to me. It is so rewarding to receive such wonderful feedback from my fellow FOB's. I keep telling everyone that putting the DVD together was a labor of love, but it really wasn't "labor" at all. It was
ALL love, and very little labor.

My first goal, as in all the videos I produce, was to tell a story. This story was about a very special weekend that was shared by the many people who fell in love with a horse named Barbaro.

My second goal, was to honor Barbaro in the most fitting way I could. That's when I decided to donate the proceeds of the DVD to the Laminitis Fund in Barbaro's honor.

As I was editing the video, I kept thinking, "Oh I hope everyone likes what I've done", because as much as I may like what I do, what really matters is how it affects my audience.

To all the FOB's who have taken the time to email me their compliments, I thank you all so very much. I feel very fortunate to even be a small part of this wonderful Barbaro Nation, and as the title says, all of this, everything we do here, is ....Because of Barbaro. I don't know if Barbaro has a DVD player in Heaven, but if he does, and he sees the video, I hope he smiles.

Oh Amy!! I am SURE they must have a DVD player at Heaven's Gate Farm...I think they have EVERYTHING there:) They even have a Pottery Barn there:)

Slew was grilling corn on the cobb tonight for dinner, I read...so maybe after dinner they all gathered to see your wonderful production!

I am waiting for mine; and reading all the glorious comments, makes me just that much more EXCITED to watch it the MINUTE it arrives:)

##

Everyone:) I just came from gratefulness.org and Barbaro had 4,857 candles from SIXTY-FIVE countries glowing in his honor:) If you have a moment every 48 hours, please go light a few for our Big Bay Big Boss Horse of FOREVER:)

I wish you all a wonderful night...sweet dreams and a happy tomorrow!

Did you survive your family event yesterday: it gave me the shivers....ew. We have a similar affliction falling on our heads for the next MONTH or so. It'll be non-stop judgement time. And I'm afraid I'll be doing a lot of hiding. Maybe I should wave Jessie's $1,600 vet bill under their noses. That'd be tantamount to waving red flag at the proverbial bull......oy. (just a moment of Sunday morning hallucination here...)It would guarantee being shunned (as it were) or excommunicated from the family...hmmm that's a thought. In my family, worry=anger, so one tries not to let on to the things which are warping one's brain with concern. I love them all, don't get me wrong...but.

That's why we have our greyound and horse famblee...and here's to you all. I remain humbled and grateful for all you guys do and say and write. The image of Angela standing at the fence at Cavel--with her cup of coffee--calmly describing the events going on beyond our sight--well, that will stay with me forever.
Barb in AZ; the Comment Queen, Harriette, Susan E., Lynne, CJ--all the names swirl in and out of my head...I feel like I know you all, but I would love to know you all better

Ah well: must feed the hounds. Be well all: what a great day for Fair Hill yesterday with the Red Aspen victory at record times, and with Matz's
Chelokee taking control of that race. You must look at the video on that one. How he just reaches inside himself and surges forward, reclaiming the lead right at the end. Thrilling...And all came home safe!

Jessie is now slathered in cortison lotion to keep her shaved area around the incision from driving her nuts with the itchies...

Posted by: Anna in Tx at June 17, 2007 2:58 PM

Kathleen: Blessings on you and ed and Cowboy. And all the other horses you have helped back into life.

After reading your post on the DB, I immediately had the image/the feeling of safe and sound for Cowboy when the storm rolled through last night. There he was, "tucked in." His own stall, deep sweet, clean bedding; clear water, fresh, good food many times a day. One cannot, however imagine the conditions under which he "lived" and suffered in his previous incarnation as a horse in some kind of hell on earth. But: he has been reincarnated into THIS safe, clean, soft, loving world.

God is good, and He blessed you and Ed with the insight into the soul of this young (as it turns out) horse who wanted to live, despite what life had handed him the last time around. Despite his pitiful appearance. It must seem so to him, as he lays in the bedding Maybe he raised his head at the storm last night, anticipating being soaked, and cold and terrified. But no: he finds himself warm and dry. Here are loving hands and soft voices, and God's angels descended to earth to care for him THIS time around. To appease the fear.

Long may you wave, Cowboy, and may you soon be well enough to come back out into the world. You will find it will be as if a huge dome had been thrown over your world, and nothing can hurt you again. Less and less will you be afraid, and if fear comes, those angels will be there with their soft voices, and their loving goodness to ease the fear, and remind you that there in nothing BAD out there anymore....

It's a new world for you, little man. We are all watching your transition with great joy. It feels like you are everyone's horse.
Be well today. It will only get better.
We promise.

She's going to try to work with Alex to adapt this flyer into a full-page ad. The ad will cost $600 (to benefit Anna House) and Bonnie will soon coordinate donations to pay for the ad.

On behalf of the children of Anna House, thank you!

#### Question for anyone that knows A LOT about horses........

OK I need TWO magazines. I need one that deals with mostly racing information, line ups, stats and that kind of stuff.....Up-to Date information as well as schedules.

The second one, I need a magazine that covers a variety of things. NOT just racing but lots of stuff related to horses. I want the racing to be IN the magazine but not the prominate factor of the magazine....

Can anyone help me out here??????

Luv you guys......... :)

Happy Father's Day, to all the folks and to Dynaformer!

A day of celebration for Redaspen and Chelokee and their strong finishes yesterday. Thank you Alex for clueing us in on Redaspen's habit of staying back - next time we won't try to call her cell phone to remind her the final turn is coming up! Our Fair Hill "family" is running for the horses.. with Nina's good hand at the window (you go, girl!) and others, the donations pots are happily full.

This is the year of the strong finish. Let's bring it on for a strong and successful finish for S.311 and HR 503.

Products of Belgium - boycott. Makes sense for going "green" to support products from closer to home, too, especially when a country with a hereditary monarchy tries to intervene in a local legislative process in conflict with our home values.

Warm FOB welcome to the newcomers to this board. Thank you, Alex, for your kind leadership.

The Louisiana Mare Arrives at Habitat for Horses.

Habitat for Horses received the call from Louisiana on Thursday about an injured mare in desperate need of special care. She had been dragged behind a trailer and badly hurt. She had spent 7 days in intensive care. That’s all we knew at that point, and by Saturday morning we were on our way. Arrangements for her new home had been made and the transport team left not knowing what would lay ahead.

As the trip started Saturday further details came trickling in. When found the mare was wearing a halter wrapped in barbed wire. She also had a hole than ran straight through her nose all the way through her sinus cavity presumably from impact with the trailer and of course her hooves had been worn down by the road.

We all began to marvel at the fact that this little mare had made it this far…we had no idea how far she’d really come.

Saturday afternoon our transport team arrived at the vet clinic. More news. The mare had not only been dragged but the trailer had been backed over her and had to be moved before she was rescued. There was virtually no heel left on the mare’s back hoof. The hole in her nose…appeared to be the entrance and exit wounds of a bullet.

There stood a little mare with so much spirit who simply refused to give in.

The Louisiana Mare arrived at her new home late Saturday evening. As the trailer door opened she stood timidly, unsure of what would happen next. Trembling as she was touched by human hands which in the past had brought her so much pain, but at the same time comforted by the gentle voices coaxing her on. She was not forced but allowed to slowly take her time emerging from the trailer. Her small audience watched in marvel. How had this little mare made it through?

She slowly made her way to the barn. Noticeably stiff, sore, and limping, but walking just the same. Refusing to give up.

She settled into her stall greedily munching her hay as hushed voices surrounded her. Bits and pieces of her story floating up through the rafters of the barn. He had paid 35 dollars for her and sold her for 100. Obviously she was worth much less than that to him. The reason for her punishment…she balked when he attempted to load her into the trailer. The photos of her rescue day were passed around. Everyone looking from photos to the mare and the mare to the photos. So hard to believe that she was standing there in front of us. The still lifeless in body in the photos had made her way to this stall.

The Louisiana Mare has a long road of recovery ahead of her. Most of the flesh from her face is missing because of the halter, the dragging and the bullet wound. Her hooves will have to regrow, but even more ne
