    Barbaro Updates: 309

    updates are now here.

Update 2058: The June 30th Hollywood Gold Cup has lost a star in Buzzards Bay: Buzzards Bay out of Gold Cup.

Update 2057: After Fair Hill I decided to pay a visit to New Holland and understand a little better a piece of the system that is in place for thoroughbreds that no longer race or go to breeding. I went with Sean Clancy (author of Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America's Heart.) I now have a new admiration for horse rescue organizations that frequent auctions on a weekly basis and a stonger belief that horse racing needs to be more responsible for the horses that serve our industry.

Update 2056: A hot morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had three to ride. First out was Nautical Agent and she went to the Tapeta track. Tim was with us on Real Lace. We jogged forward to about the eighth pole and then galloped a mile. Of course Nautical then "high stepped" it all the way home! Second out was the Tale of the Cat filly. She went to the dirt track with Tim on Nonpareil. We jogged back to the five eighths pole and then turned around to gallop a mile. She went nicely, especially given it was gate day and there were a few working out of the gate. This can easily rattle a horse that is relatively new to the track. She handled it well. Last out was Fortuna and she galloped a mile and a quarter on the Tapeta track. She galloped head and head with Tim on Quick Quest. She went well. Robbie Walsh was also with us on Whip Smart. Robbie began riding last week after his bad accident a few months ago. He seemed in good form!

Update 2055: A very cool milestone has been reached, Fans of Barbaro have now helped rescue more than 1,000 horses. You can follow up on some of the recent rescues here: Supported Horses.

    Comments

Hiya, FsOB! Kudos to all the FsOB who have done such sublime rescue work! I have begun work on my letter stating why I am boycotting Belgian goods and travel until Cavel stops slaughtering American horses. Today if you would be willing to post the name and mailing address of the daily newspaper serving your city or town, I'd be truly grateful. My thanks to Jonna for posting her paper's address in Syracuse. Here's to a productive day! Peace, RMH

    ### To Harriette, I hope that you received my thoughts about Barbaro which I sent you by e-mail last PM ####

I am the breeze that kisses your cheek.
I am the sun that warms your face.

When you look at the purple evening sky, it is me.
When you see a majestic mountain, it is me.

When the birds sweetly sing, it is my voice.
When the water gently laps against the shore, it is my heartbeat.

I am the green grass against your feet.
I am the refreshing shade of summer.

In the stars, you see my eyes.
In the blue sky, you see my body.

Feel the air that surrounds you, I am there.
Feel the love in your heart, I am there.

    #####MICHIGAN
Joan has been going it alone in Michigan

    And

    One is a lonely number

    Michiganders, Michiganians, Michiganites, Wolverines

Any way you want to say it we need your help in Michigan

Please join the Michigan Antislaughter Group

    Both Senators are Co-Sponsors.

But the aides in the HOUSE need to be aware of HR503 and it is more effective if they get calls from Michiganites.

It can be as simple as saying “Please become a co-sponsor and support HR503”

You will receive an e-mail targeting the Reps who have not yet agreed to cosponsor. There are 2 or 3 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday.

    Good Morning FOB's

    Strategy for Monday June 18

The last couple of weeks have been filled with many ups and downs. While we experienced a disappointment in the Cavel hearing, the good news is that we did pick up several new cosponsors.

We’ve been informed that the sponsors of this legislation do not want to proceed without an appropriate number of cosponsors. The target number they are looking for in the Senate is 60 (we now have 29) and the House is 218 (we now have 167) We MUST get more cosponsors for this to move forward and save our horses.

This week is also when many will be going to DC to lobby their legislators. We join with everyone in wishing them luck and thank them for their efforts. Here’s hoping for a VERY successful trip.

This week our lists will be concentrating on Senators. If they are new to the Congress, they will have no previous record on this subject. Please make sure that you SPECIFICALLY MENTION S311 when making your calls in order to avoid confusion with previous legislation that was passed in the Senate.

    Go-o-o-o-od Morning FOBs!

New Puter is up and running...But, the office beckons (sigh).

    ### Joan, you are not alone in Michigan. I have been calling and e-mailing Congressman Vern Eghlers. He had been a co-sponsor for last year's HR 503, but his aides seems to be spouting pro-slaughter talking points, as to why he is not yet a co-sponsor this time around. ("what will happen to all of the un-wanted horses...yadda yadda yadda...) SOMEBODY must get to him...not to an aide, and tell him the truth. SLAUGHTER IS NOT AN OPTION!

I will continue my efforts. Please let me know of any otherideas you may have.

    ### Hay Maribel!

    ### Harriet, I await your chapter. The task is daunting. I am humbled by the quality of the work so far. Still very interested in participating, but I am waiting for more to see which direction we are taking.

Also, I am posted the story, ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE THE WIND, on the DB. Find it under the BARBARO banner. Chapters 1 & 2 are there. Chap 3, coming tonight.

    Have a wonderful day ALL.

    Your FOB Fren,

    Alex:
without this website, and the DB or whatever we're calling it now, none of those 1,000 horses would have had a chance. God bless you, Mr. Brown, for all you do.

Just being a website Admin is grueling, add on the updates you give us everyday, the clipped articles, all the great links to the racing world, the new Wiki site(s)...and then figure in getting horses rolled underneath you, bucking, twirling and whirling on your mounts...oy.

Tim and your devotion and affection for Barbaro was one of the starting marks for all this work: That is still my favorite picture of you. The one on New Year's in B's stall at NBC. You with that grin. Barbaro with his wonderful eyes and ears pricked forward; alert, ready to go...

Your Mom raised you right, as we say, that's for sure.

    I am here.
    I get it.
    Keep marching.

A letter from Alabama Congressmen Bachus Saturday

However, after consulting with farmers and other professionals involved in the breeding and care of horses, I was concerned specific language of HR 249
The most recent horse slaughter bill could prove too, restrictive to those with the long-term health and well being of these animals at heart. While the bill has a laudable goal. I could not support it as drafted.

    _______________
The bill he is referring to HR 249 was passed already. It was the Wild horse and Burro bill.
Something is wrong here, I wrote him about bill H R 503 and this is part of his canned letter back to me! Do they not know what is going on? Confused!
This is our Alabama Congress, now I am worried.
He co-sponsored HR 503 last year, and we need his support this year.
Gee who is running the country? His letter said nothing about HR 503
Alabama needs Help badly. We are dealing with morons. But we can not give up. Let's call and educate him, "talk slowly" for they do not understand!
    Thanking you in advance

Congressman Spencer Bachus 202-225-4921 Fax 202-225-2082

I am fit to be tied, if your not from Alabama that means I am Mad as hell!
His blah blah is not on the same bill!

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple.. Please tell ten
friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of
getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

    AGAIN, PLEASE TELL 10 FRIENDS!!!

My recollection is that Sanders supported 503 last term when he was in the House; and I believe that Klobuchar voted against 311 this session in the Commerce committee, but seemed somewhat on the fence prior to the actual vote.

    ## Everyone: does anyone know the date, I think in May, that s311 came out of committee without amendments?
I got a letter from my Senator that says it is in committee! I would like to write back and inform him of the date it came out. I don't know if he is being duplicitous or dumb- either way ain't so hot is it?
No mention of co-sponsorship either, which is what I asked him in the first place. Oh Lord, protect us from politicians.

Good Sunny Monday Morning to Famblee,
I have to share my Saturday with all of you.

What a weekend I had. the Equine show was excellent. I had one negative expierence. I stopped at a booth for a Horse Association. We started talking they told me what they do. Then I asked waht their views were on Slaughter. Both people told me they see the Senate passing the bill BUT only for a year. They said there are too many horses and there is no where to put them. They continued to say that if a horse gets sick and is old where are you going to put it, you cant bury them here in CT. What happens when they are neglected and left to die? They saidthe bill will only last a year because horses will be neglected and left to die, they will be sick. Etc. Like I said I sure wouldn't want anyone I love hit with a bolt and slaughterd alive. We talked about Barbaro and when he said ti was all done for money, It took everything I had not to hit him. He said it was pathetic what he went thorough and that it never should have happened and that he was an expierement. he should have been put down right there on the track. I told him I knew the Jackson's and his team and that was not the case at all, and to please read the whole story before making false comments.I walked away and as I did he asked me haha if I wanted to join this council. I turned around and said no you just insulted people near and dear to me and Barbaro. I was sooooooooooooo mad.

Then the day turned around for the better.I played and got kisses from the horses. They can be so silly and funny to be around. The best part was meeting the Fresians...OMG I fell in love with these great beauties. I was near them and I always offer my hand to animals. These mystical horses kept kissing and massaging my hand with the most wonderful gentleness I have ever felt. At one point I felt something different, I then noticed that the Fresian had enveolped my fingers intohis mouth and he was just caressing them. I felt no fear at all, it was just so peaceful. then I felt myself resting my head on his, he and I looked into each others eyes and we saw each others soul. He just tookmy breath away. Someone walked by and said what a majical moment that is, I realized at that moment I had lost all time and space and it was just the horse and me in our own quiet.I felt like he told me to come closer as I noticed myself move closer to him. The incredible moment was one I will never forget or that horse, all three of them actually.

There are two websites you might be interested in, one has to do with two incredibel horses and a dog. Cupid the mother was a rescue, it makes the story more special. The website is.www.CupidAndArrow.com. I was invited to get involved at his farm. He does rescue.

Another one is a business who has beautiful products and the owners are wonderful to deal with. Their website is www.SilverHorseStudios.com. Their products are of excellent quality.

    Good Morning Alex.

    Barbaro,
Thank you for the sunshine today.

    Good Morning Famblee

Just wanted to report AWW (Another Wonderful Weekend) with the horses at MHR. Rosie, Misty, Baby B & Spirit are such a pleasure to be around. I had the opportunity to handle both of the babies quite a bit and they are each a handful. Spirit is very much a boy. He is defiant but learning. What can I say about Baby B. She is growing tall & elegant. It also looks like she is turning blue. She has a TB look to her whereas Spirit is all QH.

Another filly, Glory, who was one of the 6 saved last October is becoming quite a looker. Her coloring is buckskin and she has the zebra stripes on her withers and legs. Her disposition is very kind. Glory is up for adoption and I sure would like to see her go to a good home.

The other day I was comparing pictures of Cloud when he arrived at MHR last November with a current picture. The transformation is incredible. I've read that slaughter bound horses have a "look" because they know. Cloud's "look" has changed. He is now confidant & holds his head high. He is happy and that makes me so happy.

Great article in the Chicago Daily Gazette, hope everyone got to read it on the DB, last paragraph states, "It's time for Judge Kapala to drop his restraining order and it's time for Cavel to comply with the provisions of our new state law. In the past we've been supportive of Cavel's right to slaughter horses for overseas human consumption but the situation has changed. The people of Illinois, in the person of their elected representatives have spoken. Enough is enough." We have the media involved now so let's take advantage of that and make our calls count.

I finally secured an appointment with Senator Nelson on Wednesday. John Holland will be representing us and will address the reasons he has not co-sponsored yet this year. Hopefully we will be able to add him soon as a co-sponsor. If you haven't joined a state group, please do so. As state leader of Florida I have met so many great people doing this and we exchange ideas that are working! I am having all my callers fax the excellent article by HSUS which is posted on the DB, titled, "Abandon the Myth of the Unwanted Horse." Please read it if you haven't, it is one of the better articles that every rep and senator should read.

Tremendous races this weekend by Chelokee, Take d Tour and one of my favorites, Flashy Bull. He faced the great Barbaro 3 times last year and has developed into an awesome horse this year. And can't forget Redaspen, very impressive run from behind to get second at Monmouth. Congrats.

    Good morning, all!

I'm glad I made my calls early this morning, because I then called the cable co. and got HBO activated--in time to see the last half of the program on Barbaro. I feel so subdued since then. I didn't even realize until later that it was just around the time he was put down, on a Monday, now almost 6 months ago. How can it be this long? Oddly, one of the scenes that got me was seeing how they blocked off the interstate so Barbaro could get to NBC.

1,000 horses are alive to reflect his legacy. Alex, I love what you wrote on the wiki site:

"The unprecedented "internet group hug", originally intended to heal a single horse, has turned itself toward the ills of the entire equine world."

I cannot begin to understand how any equine group like the one Renee mentioned can think it's somehow OK to bolt and slaughter horses! What is wrong with them? How can you partner an animal as noble as the horse and then just let them be tortured to death? Everyone who approves of this ought to walk their horse right into that chamber of death so they can experience it up close and personal.

On a happier note, congrats to Chelokee and bravo to Redaspen! It's wonderful to know that our babies at MHR are thriving, too. There is always so much darkness, but thankfully, sometimes the light penetrates the gloom and provides clarity.

    Jane,
I have trouble with this, how can you be involved with these precious animals, say you love them you understand our stand, and then say here are the realities for salughter.YIKES I wanted to throw up...double standards. I had to leave I did not have a good feeling and would never get involved with a Horse Council like that. I'll take my $20.00 a year membership fee and put it where it belongs...With Horses In Need.

I forgot to mention Cupid was a rescue, she was sick, dirty, abused and broken down and was adopted at the end of the night, by a wonderful man whom I will be working with. He brought her back to health, he told me he saw her and fell in love, she was auctioned for $350.00, and nobody wanted her but him. Lucky Little girl she is. He is very special!

Wednesday, June 13th... 100 degrees today, 100 degrees tomorrow. Flies are having a convention. Yesterday the old man Whitey Ford was beginning to melt, so into a shady pen he comes. Whitey Ford spent the rest of the afternoon yelling for his buddies. Instead of being grateful for nice cool shade, Whitey Ford moans and groans. Poops into his water bucket. Kicks his alfalfa away. 106 horses on our ranch, and happiness is a state of mind. Horses are not big fans of change. The same worn out pair of house slippers every morning...

But change can sometimes be good, and DSL is not far away. A new fire station down the road, so we reap the rewards. Fire fighters want high speed internet. We would settle for slow speed internet. I can never go on line during evening hours. A traffic jam. But at 5:00 in the morning all roads are clear...

This morning new pictures for the front page will not show up. If only this computer would stay on line for longer than 6 minutes, new pictures would appear. Dial up is no fun. I will keep trying...

Last week I wrote about our friend Cassidy, and the organization she belongs to called Kids Against TV. There were several phone calls, and also letters in the regular mail. Sara in Florida belongs to a group called Kids Against McDonalds. Melissa in Idaho is a member of Volunteer Kids, Inc. Rickie and Stephanie live in Washington, and they belong to Kids Against Alcohol. Alyssia, Bonnie and Brook all live in Petaluma, and they are members of Kids Against Meat. Cathy and I live on a ranch with dial up, and entertainment comes from watching a chicken cross the road. Our readers keep us informed, and thank you very much.

Little Allison Martino of Woodland wishes there was an organization called Kids Against Homework. Allison says she would join in a jiff...

An amazing letter in the regular mail from Pete (Pete is a girl and 17 years old) who lives in Reno. Pete went to a feed lot in a town called Fallon, and saved the life of a 22 year old thoroughbred gelding. She named him Barney, because he prefers staying inside the barn. Pete plays softball on a championship team. She has won awards as a member of the debate team. She watched as her older sister gave birth. At a concert Pete met Carrie Underwood, her idol, and they talked for 20 minutes. All that has happened to Pete in her life, and nothing compares to Barney. She would go to the barn before school. To the barn after school. And now summer vacation is here, and Pete is with Barney all day long. She wanted me to know she knows. The overwhelming joy. The giddines she feels each morning. Barney has a racing tattoo and Pete did the research. He made $170.00 dollars as a race horse. Never finished better than fifth. We end with the following from Pete:

I would read your morning journal and think wow, this guy is a radical. No one could love horses that much. Get a life man. And then Barney became one with me, and he is my heart. The day I brought him to the barn he was thin and miserable. He wanted nothing to do with me. A lifetime of neglect, and why should I be any different? A month later, and he was gaining weight. Early in the morning, I was late for first period, and I took off his blanket and put his feed out. Gave him a kiss and said see you tonight. And Barney whimpered. I got to my car and he cried out for me. I turned to see him pacing. He was still crying. I went back to him and he layed his head on my shoulder and we stayed that way for the longest time. He would let out another whimper. I never did go to first period. He is my life. I have never loved anyone this much. And now I understand about the things you say on your morning journal. Barney makes me feel like I know the secret to life. Taking care of each other. And by the way Joe, Barney likes country on his barn radio.

    Pete

Enjoy your scalding hot Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses...

    Joe

We have started a Pennsylvania Strategy like many of the other states have. Our team is now 44 strong and we’d like more of you to join us! We have 9 legislators who have not co-sponsored the bills. We are experiencing success! We do need more assistance, however...

There are 3 or 4 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

I am the Pennsylvania State Leader. Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation. You can email me at Lor's Email Addy.

    OUR HORSES NEED YOUR HELP!

A few minutes each day for our Horses it not much to ask..

    I GET IT.

    Lor in PA

Next week we’ll be in Washington DC to talk to our PA legislators...will you join us?

    Good Morning FsOB:

Wow! What a great work we've done! Over 1,000 horses alive today because of us and the one who brought us together. Incredible. Alex, these horses owe their lives to you; we couldn't have done this without you.

Great races this weekend. Congrats to Tim and Alex and the beautiful Redaspen! I'm so happy she's feeling good and safe.

But I'm bothered by something I saw this morning. I'm watching TVG and it's post time for the 3rd race at Philadlphia Park. The number 1 horse was a late scratch, on the track just before loading in the gate. I was washing dishes and just saw a little bit, don't know why the scratch...BUT, as the jockey was taking his saddle off, it looked like he kicked the horse in the stomach! I could be wrong as I looked just at that moment, but the horse jumped back like he'd been kicked. I hope I'm wrong. Did anyone else see this? (I didn't catch the jockey's name either.)

Have TVG on at lunch and just watched a jockey, I believe Victor Molina kick the heck out of his horse in the belly after he removed the saddle. The TVG announcer was very enraged and there is no debate involved in this act - he must be suspended, hopefully permanently. She said they are being bombarded at TVG with emails regarding the abuse we just witnessed at Philly Park.

Forgot to mention how great it was to see Shake the Bank run on his own, Graham Motion said they owed it to the horse after being a "rabbit" for Better Talk Now all these years, he ran a great second in the stakes at Monmouth yesterday.

I pray few will need it in the coming months and years...that our doors will be closed to the shipping of these magnificent animals for slaughter.

    SHELLEY A, DEBRA WI

Here is what you can do in your own state. This really has nothing to do with state groups or the national strategy, but it is something I think is important.

We have been saying that you need to work the aide. You can bet the other side is doing this!

If you can, schedule a meeting with your OWN Senator or Representative in your own state. This is one thing are working on here in Arizona, and have been, even before we organized as a state group.

Go in and talk to the aide in charge of agricultural or animal issues. This is something Daryl has done. He won over two pro slaughter aides !

Please, in your own state, go make an appointment at the state office. You are a constituent, and it makes such a BIG difference. Tell them how it affects everybody in his or her district, because it is cruelty to animals.

If I, as an individual, were to inflict this kind of pain and suffering on an animal, our Sheriff Joe Arpaio would have me locked up! Why, oh why, can the slaughter houses violate anti cruelty laws and get away with it ? ? ?

Go make an appointment if you can. Go in as a constituent, and MAKE A DIFFERENCE !

NancyCT, Aren't the Friesians just BEAUTIFUL, I know, I know, this is a horse racing site, but the Friesian is MY breed. Love those HUGE black horses with the LONG or should I say EXTRA LONG flowing manes & tails. We have one down the street that I go and visit from time to time, he is the biggest sweetheart. They do draw you in don't they? :)

I cant believe I just read all this about a jockey kicking his horse... for not being able to run of all things, that is uncalled for and I too hope he is banned from ever riding again. Yep, the horse should have given him a good Swift kick right back, maybe he would think twice before doing it again.

So happy about the new co sponsors. Just wish we could get more of Ohio on board. I was looking at the co sponsor list for the Senate and can't believe there is not one for Illinois, unless we just picked one up. Tells the tale in Illinois. Hopefully the article is right and change is coming.
I sure do hope the pro slaughter side thinks the bill will pass, but only for a year is enough to make you laugh. Sounds like we have them VERY worried...hahahahahaha I love it. GO FOB ! ! !

Well back to it. Everyone have the best day you can & know I love & miss you all especially when I am not here.

BARB AZ - I added my 2 cents to the MSNBC blog. You can't change this person's mind. And they just want to get you into a mud-slinging argument. You have done a wonderful job, as have others, posting some very valuable information on MSNBC.
The most important thing to remember is; there have been many anti-slaughter voices heard on a widely read venue. Yours with the greatest amount of information & passion. As a result, people who may have known very little about horse slaughter in this country are now informed. And we march forward.

    Nancy

Posted by: NancyinCT at June 18, 2007 8:51 PM

I thought I'd share my horse's story, he knows all too well what happens when people "Dont get it"

In the fall of 1996, I had sadly parted with my last horse, considering I had outgrown him in size and ability. I was in a bad state financially, and it was a good decision. I sold Rolex to a good friend who was going to use him as a lesson horse. So with a lot of tears (still there occasionally) we parted company. For financial reasons, I also parted with all of my tack, down to my last brush.
Not wanting to fall in love with another horse that I couldn't truly afford, I stayed as far from horses as I could manage. Until Thanksgiving Day 1997 I was successful. The phone rang with a respected friend of mine on the line. She said, and I quote,.... I found the perfect horse for you. I'm like, I can't do it, I don't want to give my heart to another horse. Find someone else. She persisted for two weeks, and finally, to get her off my case I went to see the horse.
We drove the ten miles to a small "farm" using that term loosely. In the field, which isn't much larger then my backyard (1/4 acre.) I could see six horses and ponies. 2 appaloosas, 2 paints and 2 miniature horses. The mud was appalling that they were standing in, they were covered in mud. Their feet were in a sad state of neglect and you could see every rib on every single horse. My eyes caught sight of a small, black and white leopard app gelding who seemed to be begging for help. He was by far the worst off.
I went to the front door of the house, and practically broke it down. I was like, what do you want for that black and white leopard appaloosa in your front yard. They stood there and stared at me like I was an alien. The husband spoke up and said we want 1500 dollars for him. I looked back at this pathetic creature standing there still staring in my direction. At which point I lost my temper and screamed..."What is it going to take for me NOT to call the police?" Its your choice. He said, well if you don't call them, we'll give you Warrior for 500 dollars....... SOLD, kinda
Later I came back with a trailer to pick up "Warrior". The money changed hands and we went off on our way. What I failed to mention to the owner was that I had already contacted the Hanover County Humane Enforcement and they were on their way. The County seized all five remaining horses and they would all survive. They wouldn't have lived much longer with unclean water, no shelter and insufficent food.
Today "Warrior" or Apache as I call him is a happily retired 30 year old appaloosa gelding who is fat as a hog and living life as a babysitter to my best friend's weanling. He worked for 13 years as a lesson horse, as well as a trail guide. HE will never be sold, his future is secured, and to this day he's still my best friend. Thanks Apache, I love you forever

Re-post from Debra, Shelly, and Friar:

Note - the people on the TWR national list for today are all new to Congress with no track record on the antislaughter issue. Something to keep in mind when making the contacts there.

AFTER completing official marching orders - Any extra time/energy? - here's the extra list - 4 more Senators being targeted by other groups today - Monday June 18 - so our voices add to the impact. Be sure to mention S 311 by number.

THANKS everybody for all that you do.

    Goodnight Barbaro

Always...watch for your shiny star. My sounds like your equine friends and heavenly friends have alot going on. Dancing, games, love, and frens...great. Run painfree, sweetie.

    Goodnight Fans/Family of Barbaro.

Stories like Cathy and Gia, and many, many others is what it is all about, rescuing, finding loving homes, stopping horses going to a brutal slaughter. We thank everyone of you. And Congratulations FOB's, 1000 horses...your hearts can soar with the mighty eagle...and be so proud that these horses have homes, to rest their weary heads. Thank you!!!

Please, let us continue to call, fax, email, letters, and even make extras, whatever it takes...we have to be heard. Horses are still being slaughtered and transporting across the borders and it is time that America wakes up, and stops this dirty little secret.

Remember each other, the Fallen Angels, the rescues, the ones suffering, and say a prayer for those who are in Washington...that their voices will be heard.

    Have a lovely evening.

    ####
    Tim and Alex...thank you always.

Renee...your trip to the horse rescue just made me so happy...thank you.

    FYI

I've been asking the FOBs to buy raffle tickets for a "special" Barbara Livingston "Old Friends" book. I believe this book is very hard to find these days. Proceeds go to Miracle Horse Rescue with 25% going to the Laminitis Fund. Both very worthy causes. I just heard from Stephanie that they've received yet another call to pick up a severely starved & neglected horse. This will be the 3rd horse in 3 weeks they are taking in. Monies donated to buy these raffle tickets will help feed all the horses at Miracle Horse Rescue and let me tell you they are overflowing right now.

Here's the link to the thread at the forum for info on the raffle. $20 bucks for a ticket or 2 for $35 for an autographed "Old Friends". I KNOW how much we've all donated and that the efforts are ongoing. Please buy a ticket or two if you can.

Alex: at the risk of being gushy: you are amazing. To go to the New Holland auctions and see for yourself. Yes, breeders must become more responsible for what they breed. We have been singing this song vis a vis the racing greyhound for over 20 years in the USA.

I too have huge respect for those in rescue who go to these auctions and see the ones they can't save. To have to choose. I don't know if I could do this. To be outbid by a KB who knows what you're after and do so just for the spite of it...

Bless the rescue folk of the world. And bless you and Clancy for getting better aware.

I am so proud of being part of the FoB.

GIA! What a great story. Your friends was an angel is disguise for insisting that you go to look at the horses, and then the spirit of your Apache reached out to you in the wretched place.

I LOVE that you just about blew the "owners" away, and then scared the bejezzess out of them and got him for 1/3 of what the idiot had first demanded.

What a tale. Thank you so much for saving them all, and for bringing the tale to TWR so we can all enjoy your fiestiness...you rock. girl. And Apache: long may you wave!

Hey I just got home and reading through these posts.

    ## Nancy your right about the private email thing. I do have one thing to say though...

IMO I feel that both Tim and Alex and of course Michael and Edgar are ALL the rare right type of horsmen. There are a lot of trainers, jockeys and who knows what that abuse horses... On this site, I feel that it is OK to talk about facts as long as they are facts. Remember Tim and the people I just mentioned DO NOT abuse horses. That iz why I feel that nothing has been said yet. I may be wrong but I feel that it should be known who is abusing horses out there. IT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AND IT NEEDS TO STOP!!!!!!

Public Awareness and letting everyone know what is going on is only going to "help" the horses......... Our family is NOT in that categorie so there is nothing to worry about there......

Edgar would never kick a horse. He is a horse lover and abuse? NOT!!!!!!! That is what makes a good jockey.... :-)

It looks like the 110th Congress has a target adjournment date of October 26th. OCTOBER 26TH!!!

Guys: join a state group. Head up a state group. Call. Call. Call. We have a scant three and some change months to get the American Horse Protection Act into law. Please. Please.

We are the FoBs. We need to get tougher about getting to our representatives. We are working hard, but we have to do better. I can't believe this is coming up so fast. It'll be Labor Day before we know it. We need to ask more of ourselves. And of each other.

    For the love of Barbaro.

I am almost finished with my letter as to why I am boycotting Belgian products and travel until Cavel stops killing American horses. I loved reading the story "Enough Is Enough" that Barb M. shared with the FLA Call Group. There was a "Paul Sorvino" who responded in a horse-frienly manner. Does anyone know if that is the renowned film actor Paul Sorvino? Wishing everyone a peaceful evening, RMH

    Hello Barbaro,

Well, the Heaven’s opened up today and doused us with rain! It was nice sitting inside and listening to the thunder and watching the flashes of lightning. It made being at work a little bit cozy...

Honey, I have been working some long hours in preparation for inventory (yuck!) but I manage to peek in every once in awhile on the Board.

I’m going to ask a favor of Alex right now...will you stay by my side?

I know he’s very busy and I (we) shouldn’t ask but he we go...are you coming?!

Alex, you mentioned that you went to New Holland today. Would you please consider giving us a description of your visit?

I know you will be selective with your visual descriptions in order to protect us yet also be accurate as to what is really going on.

Many of us will never have or take the opportunity, to attend such an auction and I would appreciate hearing more about this. Please educate people like myself.

    Would you please?... Thank you.

Okay Honey, you can come out now! It’s all done. We’ll see if he heard us in the next couple of days!

Are you ready for bed? Let’s grab your blanket and cuddle you up for the night. After the rain, the air got cooler but still humid. We'll fluff the folds perfectly for nuzzling...

Your Dream Angels are patiently waiting and they are busy wringing out their wings! Were you guys over Minnesota today?! Ah, running races, of course!

Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days.

Barbaro, there may be a handsome and beloved chocolate lab approaching The Bridge soon. There are already tears here on Earth for him...

Would you please meet him and walk beside him as he crosses? No Honey, he can walk. He likes to walk! Him and his Mommy enjoy their walks together...

His name is Chip. His Mommy has tried everything she can think of to help him but it seems that he is needed in Heaven and will wait for his Mommy there.

Please have some treats and toys ready for him. He won't be in pain any longer so he will be ready to play!

We will be here for his Mommy.

Good night Honey. Sweet dreams to you. Remember, I love you so much. XXOOxxoo

    ####

    Hello Hope,

I hope that the humid weather hasn't made you too miserable these past few days. And I also hope that Little Laurie H. has been a good girl for you!

Are you ready for your blanket? We'll pull it up high and fluff the folds just right for nuzzling.

Little Laurie H. still enjoys touching you while you sleep so we'll leave a bit untucked...

Your Dream Angels are nearby and already yawning! It seems that you are going to nod off right away Hope!

Good night Hope. I love you very much! Sleep well and sweet dreams to you Little One. xxooxxo

    ####

    Hello Little Laurie H.,

So, you know I'm going to ask...have you been naughty or nice?!

I hope you've been a good girl...I really need to email someone about this!

Let's grab your blanket and tuck you in. Tonight is supposed to be a clear night so Little One, when you see your very first star tonight, close your eyes good and tight. Think of a wish...anything at all.

Whisper your wish to Barbaro. He can keep a secret...and he makes wishes come true. Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Edgar Prado, Eduardo...

Good night Little Laurie H. Shhhhhh. I love you. Sweet dreams Sweetheart...xxoxox

Thanks for Talking to Barbaro about Becky and Chip. It is so comforting to know that he will be waiting to greet Chip as he crosses. Chip has fought the good fight just like Barbaro did. He and Chip will have much to discuss. Chip will fit in fine with all his Mom's Frens while he waits for her to come to him someday. Hi Leslie,

Chip will be at my side all the way. He'll have an easy trip, we all do. On the way, I'll fill him in on how easy it is to fit in here, because of the love you all have given us... the care, concern and compassion. We carry it in our hearts and weave that into the most beautiful robe and give it to the newest one here!

There will be more of us to meet him than just me, there always are. I hope you rest easy tonight knowing Chip is in your heart and will be there forever. You can get real quiet at night and he will be there, just like that! That's what I do every night when I remember my people. We'll take good care of your boy, promise.

Fellow FOB Becky has tried everything to help her chocolate lab, Chip. I don't want to post anything specific in case I don't have it correct, but Becky is preparing Chip for his transition over The Bridge.

Her heart is broken. She is going to spend the night and tomorrow, spoiling him. She can't get him to eat...

    Laurie
Thank you so much for including Chip in your tuck-in with Barbaro. I'm still crying rivers of tears but I took Chip out for a little walk tonight and cooked up a Bison steak for him. He did manage to eat that and for a fleeting moment, I forgot about what is going on.

It seems that maybe he is staying with me long enough to help me figure out how to cope with all of this. I really don't know if that is possible.

To all the rest of the Barbaro famblee who have kept Chip in your thoughts and prayers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I'll try to spoil him for whatever time I have left. Grama is down to take care of him this week, while I try to fake myself through work.

Barbaro, please meet Chip at the other side of the Rainbow Bridge when it's his time. He spent many nights up with me, when we worried about you.

What Her Rescue Horse Means To One Young Lady

(get out the kleenex) Excerpt from Joe at TB Friends, Weds 6/13

The giddiness she feels each morning.

    Joe

    Becky,
I know I emailed you earlier but I wanted to say once more I am thinking of you and your baby Chip. It is always the enormity of our love, that creates the severity of our loss. It is so hard to let go and we are never truly ready. I am proud to have gotten to see a beautiful picture of that gorgeous boy. I am proud to know such a person as yourself. You are an amazing friend, as are Leslie and Laurie.

Barbaro, I have a little favor to ask please. Show Chip around when he comes to the Rainbow Bridge. He will be that beautiful chocolate boy with a shiny gleam in his eye, and a big wagging otter tail. He will be missing his mama Becky so much. She also will miss him as he was her best friend/hairy child. Tell him they will see each other one day later on.

I have another friend named Becki. Her 14 year old best friend Jackie,a rottweiler, died Sat. Please help her, she could hardly walk, or see very well and was very arthritic. Let her know that her mama loved her and tried so hard to keep her on earth. She went in her sleep.

BARBARO-I LOVE YOU BIG OLE BOY

PRAYERS FOR ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL

Hi, Barbaro - still miss you.

Confession - I just didn't feel like talking to aides yesterday so for the first time since I can remember I waited until after hours and left messages on voicemails instead. Feel guilty but just needed a break. I did put antislaughter flyers up on Sunday at the last two barns at the edge of the trails in Elgin IL (Cook County). I do that every time I make the trip to the "old" trails.

After playing "catch-up" for the Comments I missed over the weekend (great trailride with Shona in the "old" woods) - HOORAY for COWBOY! I know the situation can change in a heartbeat, but I left for the country having read that he was too far gone due to starvation and was scheduled to be put down; and came back to read that 3 vets pronounced him fit to try to save (apparently no irreversible damage to vital organs, and all vital signs within normal limits) - and that sweet starved Appie is being given the chance. Kudos to all who are striving to save him. (thread at DB under "world's skinniest horse" or something like that)

I wanted to respond to a few posters. Hello and best of everything to all of you - but two I have to single out today...

    #########
Lisa Leach - I got your email with the foal photo and responded via email before I read your happy announcement posted on 6/18 @ 2:34 a.m. and want to say out loud in front of Alex and everyone:
I AM KVELLING MIT NACHAS for you and your famblee. Always felt close to you from when we both learned of our lives with boxers. Shuddered until you got Mink back. FYI - Lisa is one of several FOBs who need extra eyes to let them know of worthy situations needing material assistance; and periodically I send out emails to the effect of "If I could, I would . . . " donate to a particular cause - and they do (if they hadn't noticed it and donated already).

As to "turning blue" - Rosie's Filly (Bobby's Lil Angel) at MHR came out of a red/sorrel/chestnut (?) mare and the daddy was a blue roan. She was born appearing bay (dark points [lower legs] and mane and tail) - but now Stephanie reports she is shedding the baby coat and coming in blue - like her daddy. That probably is happening to your little charmer.

    ##########
Lynne Brown - ladee at da fens - re your post at 6/18, 4:09 a.m. - your description of meeting a friend of a friend, first non-FOB you ever met who knew who Peter Brette was and was totally into the Barbaro story - as you put it -

"...someone I didn't have to explain it all to..."

Priceless. Now and then at a music venue I will run into people like that and boy what a treat.

    #########
Some stuff from my recent anecdotage -

I watched the KY Derby on a bigscreen TV at the home of Jeannette, an old friend of mine who is also friends with (and not too far from) my pal in Elgin who maintains the shareboard on Shona; met for the first time, and was sloppily loved on, by her 13 yr old boxer-pit mix named Bully (short for Bulldoser) who was nearing the end. He died on Preakness weekend. His mom (the one with the big screen TV) waited exactly one week, and then both for her and for the surviving dog, a 6 yr old girl, friendly border collie/lab mix, she and her partner went to a local nokill shelter and came home with Jasper, 7 wk old lab. Met the new baby this weekend. OY!

My Most Memorable Moment of the weekend (and this, in context of what I've described as the most perfect trailride - "into the sunrise and through the mist, and over the countryside" - followed by a dip in my friend's aboveground pool, along with her new 8 week old lab puppy Jasper and his new big sister - what a hoot):

It was a little after 9 am; I was already back from my crack-of-dawn ride, Shona was put up for the day; and before returning to my pal's to drop off the hackamore and saddlepad before heading for the pool - I stopped around the corner from where Shona lives at Shanty's old barn (where I buy eggs from chickens who live like real chickens), to drop off antislaughter flyers (Illinois edition). Met a couple with 3 horses cavorting in the outdoor ring (as I learned, theirs, and a grandchild's); asking me about entrances to the trails, depths of water crossings and such, and when they found out I'd been on those trails since the late 70's - and ascertaining my penchant for early rides - well, they want me to be their "Sherpa" is what she called it. They too want to ride early in the hot weather. Really hope they call! I do so love doing that - passing on what I have learned. Know all the side trails and byways etc etc - but riding alone and without a cell phone, on such a very tall mare, I limit us to the main trails. Will be able to explore more once again. Whoo Hoo! Turns out she used to keep a horse in Dyer IN - that's where my QH Joe was when he died - and knows the guy I got my next two mares from - such a small horse world!

And now, another best friend (who I'd have wound up with if in 1982 he weren't allergic to cats!) just came by and soon as he checks out Fred's new guitar and we hang out a bit, I will get to the phones and call live people today. Being a voluntarily disbarred lawyer, I think of myself as the unlicensed mouthpiece for the voiceless horses.

    ########
Couple more mentions: Thank you to the people who have volunteered to head up the Kentucky and what is the other new State - is it Kansas? - State groups. I really think the concentrated calls/faxes from the people in the legislators' own States is extremely important at this stage of the political game. But what do I know?

As I say in my comical musical act -

    I'm just a half-baked Kosher ham from Hammond . . .

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

Hope Peace Love Music & RESPECT - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother Forever & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

PS - New pics with me & Shona up at my website - click on my sig below and then on "more horsey pics" link at the right under the band pic that's up. The last shot - the cat impersonating the MGM lion - is DeeDee, one of the two girls who live with my pal who shareboards Shona.
