Barbaro Updates: 311

updates are now here.

Update 2068: News concerning California tracks, Bay Meadows may race in 2008 as a result of a waiver regarding the need to adopt a synthetic racetrack: Hold All Tickets! Bay Meadows to Race in '08. Golden Gate Fields may also take advantage of this waiver as it is behind on its plans to adopt the Tapeta surface: Golden Gate may also get synthetic surface waiver.

Santa Anita looks set to get a well needed refurbishment as it also adopts its synthetic track: Stronach Tells CHRB He'll Use $24M on Upgrades.

Update 2067: An explanation for dual Guineas winner Cockney Rebel's erratic finish yesterday, he has a broken pelvis, which is not considered life threatening: REBEL BLOW FOR HUFFER

Update 2066: The Royal Ascot meet continued today. The Prince of Wales Stakes attracted a couple of runners who made trips to the US last`year. Dylan Thomas, who was second today, showed complete disdain for the dirt at Belmont Park last year and ran last. Fourth placed Red Rocks beat our own Better Talk Now in the Breeders' Cup Turf: MANDURO MASTERS WALES'S RIVALS.

I was having lunch at Prizzios and caught up with Barclay Tagg. Among things we chatted about he confirmed he is planning to run both NoBiz and Funny Cide July 4th weekend. Both are doing well. He has taken the blinkers off NoBiz. Showing Up continues his recovery and is walking the shedrow forty minutes, twice a day. Barclay was disappointed that Showing Up was injured this year as he felt he had a real chance at championship honors.

Update 2065: A late morning for me this morning, the cable in my house does not work!

I had three to ride at Fair Hill this morning, the same three as yesterday. First out was Gator Nation. He went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a quarter. He went nicely. Tim was with us, he was on Real Lace who was galloping a mile and a half. The rain started to come down a little hard after this set, Tim and I took the next set to the fields. I was on the Tale of the Cat filly, Tim was on Nautical Agent. This was my filly's first venture out back, and she seemed to really enjoy it. Fortunately we were not confronted with deer which could have made the ride a little too exciting for a first day out back. Nautical Agent also seemed to enjoy herself.

Final set I was on Quick Quest, and went to the Tapeta track with Robbie Walsh on Fortuna and Victor Molina on Whip Smart. All went well. Robbie had a spill earlier in the morning, his first spill since his acccident. He survived! I spent a lot of time talking to Victor about the incident he was involved in earlier in the week: Jockey short with horse. He obviously regrets the incident, it is his first infraction in his 27 year career. As a senior jockey at Philadelphia Park, he does a lot of work to support his fellow jockeys and horsemen. This incident is very much out of character, and as Victor noted this morning, perhaps this is a wake-up call that he needs to do more. My personal perspective is I hope he is not made an example of for this incident. He's a good guy who messed up big time. He knows it. He has a hearing on friday from which he will learn his fate.

Where do I begin? Let me start by saying I have a lot of medication cursing through me, and I hope I make sense.
###
Laurie H. In case you ever wondered, Your tuckin's are really a gift from Heaven. I slept like rock last night. Best nights sleep I had in a week. They do work. I am so Honored to be part of your tuck in. I will never forget this. Thank you so much.

Harriette, Thank-you for calling and checking on me. I could really use some chocolate. I can't give up all my vices.

Please everyone, remember we have FOBs in Wash DC today, doing their best to get the message across and gain more co-sponsors! We can underscore the support for HR503 and S311 with our calls, emails, and faxes going to the offices while they are there! Big day on the Hill for our voices to be heard!

CAL-
I certainly hope that the nights sleep helped you feel better. Make sure you are drinking plenty of liquids, dude! Take all your meds and be sure to follow Drs. orders so you can recover faster. We have wondered how you were faring. I have had that dreaded pneumonia more than once, and it is no picnic! Take care of yourself, and BEHAVE so as not to overexert yourself and get all exhausted. It is not condusive to healing, but we all know that CHOCOLATE does help! YUM.

Sorry Alex!-I know we are not supposed to chat. I did not have Cals email. :0)

Jonna
Your right,
I too just got off the phone with an aide in Bachus's office. He doesnt have an aide assigned to the bill. Told him of the letter I received from Bachus and how it referred to the wrong bill. And wish to clear up the matter, and ask why the congressman has not co-sponsored this year. Because he did in 2006

Told him I am a fan of Barbaro and we helped close the slaughter plants in Texas and Illinois is next to be closed. And how important this bill passing is, because the horses are being shipped to Mexico and Canada. Let's just say I did most of the talking. He did not say that they were considering support of HR 503

Just that he would tell Bachus.

Everyone keeping!

I just saw the wonderful film THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY at the AFI documentary film festival in Washingtonits amazing to see it, see the Kentucky Derby in a great theater on a huge screen! And the Barbaro scenes, so poignant since of course no one knew what was ahead.

The Hennegan brothers hope to make people who hadnt been interested in horses or racing see how fascinating both can be and hope for national distribution, hope to be at other big festivals. If anyone has distribution contacts, I know they wont be disappointed in the filmso amazing to see the whole thing after seeing a few clips.
The Q and A was fascinating after the film. I just hope the movie gets to be shown in theaters the audience reaction was so good

A Prayer #####

Lord God, we thank thee for thy servants who
are today in the struggle ,
for the hearts and minds of the Congress.
Bless them as they go about our Capitol city, our halls of power.
Sharpen their minds, make nimble their voices,
let them reach the unreached, the unsigned,
let a thought streak through the walls to the barricaded minds and open them to the cry of the horses of our nation.
Let our elected ones protect our defenseless ones.
In Jesus' name, amen.

Jockey Molina to Meet With Stewards Over Kicking Incident
by Linda Dougherty
Date Posted: June 20, 2007
Last Updated: June 20, 2007

Philadelphia Park jockey Victor Molina waived his right to a notice of a formal hearing Tuesday and will instead meet with track stewards on Friday to discuss his actions prior to the third race on Monday, which resulted in his indefinite ejection from the track.

Molina, a 27-year veteran, was ejected after Philadelphia Park received numerous telephone and e-mail complaints from television viewers who had seen him kick the 2-year-old colt, Yes Yes Ohyes, in the stomach as he was removing his tack after the horse was ordered scratched by the track veterinarian. The horse flipped in the starting gate, pinning Molina briefly, and then hit Molina in the head and chest.

Molina said he was “very sorry” for what he did, and explained that the horse hit him hard and he lost his temper. “It’s the first time I’ve done anything like that … I make a living off these animals and don’t want to hurt them,” he said.

Sal Sinatra, Philadelphia’s director of racing, said he has urged Molina to talk with the media in order to express how sorry he is about the incident, and that he intends to do so.

Jockey Tony Black, the president of the group Philadelphia Park Jockeys, which represents the riders, said he was with Molina Tuesday when they met with Sinatra and track stewards. He said that track management, claiming the racetrack is ‘private property,’ was technically within their rights to eject Molina.

“There’s been a lot of pressure on them to do something,” said Black. “This incident has gotten so much attention because it was broadcast on TVG.”

Black, who has known Molina for more than 20 years, said, “Victor (Molina) is always so cool, calm and collected … he doesn’t even raise his voice in the jock’s room. One of the officials said to him (Tuesday), ‘we don’t even have a file on you.’ He really regrets what happened, and I’ll bet something like this will never happen again.”

Black also added that there has been an overwhelming amount of support on the Philadelphia Park backstretch for Molina, who is known for his quiet nature and hard work.

We join with everyone in wishing them luck and thank them for their efforts. Here’s hoping for a VERY successful trip. Let’s light up those phone lines this week in support of our friends who have gone the extra mile!!

The target number they are looking for in the Senate is 60 (we now have 29) and the House is 218 (we now have 167) We MUST get more cosponsors for this to move forward and save our horses.

This week our lists will be concentrating on Senators. If they are new to the Congress, they will have no previous record on this subject. Please make sure that you SPECIFICALLY MENTION S311 when making your calls in order to avoid confusion with previous legislation that was passed in the Senate.

#####
Senator Patty Murray (WA) has been getting LOTS OF CALLS FROM YOU GUYS...so, imho we should keep hitting them with MORE positive calls. Onward.
#####
Prayer for success for all the FoBs in Washington today...and for all the FoBs all over this big, amazing country of ours who succeed at many things despite the tangled mess in DC. We need to keep in mind that this will all be over for another year in late October. The 110th Congress will be adjourned for the year.

Then we'll have to start all over. And of course, we'll do that if we have to. But I for one, would rather make this world safe for our horses THIS YEAR. (Plus, I'm getting a lot crabbier and demanding as time goes by. God Knows how my long patience will be by 2008.)
#####
Much as I try, cannot forget that horses are being slaughtered in Illinois this day. This beautiful, early summer day. It seems incongruous that this beauty and that obscenity can take up space in the same place. We need to take Cavel down once and for all with S311 or HR503.

Please, keep calling, and those who can, push. Look what it's done for Barb, The Queen of Comments in AZ? We just need to redirect our anger, sorrow and frustrations to the phone work, faxes and emails.

And people who want to be candidates for President need to know that if they DO NOT back stopping slaughter in the US, that 80% of Americans will be informed of their choices...and they may very well lost supporters through that one choice.

It may just be that the overwhelming issues like Iraq, universal healthcare, immigration are so complex and upsetting to voters that they will cling to something to elegant and perfect and simple and humane as keeping American horses SAFE> It just might be.

So keep on keepin' on. The horses are calling to us. Please hear their voices.

Good morning all - as we start our day, here's some inspirational reading to keep in mind when getting down to the business of contacting those recalcitrant legislators.

Crosspost from the Forum - wanted you all to see not only the update from Stephanie of MHR on new arrival Fred, the junkyard horse whose companion died from the same neglect that Fred survived, but also Steph's account of her nephew's reaction to seeing a starved horse. IMO, passing this character trait on to the younger generation(s) is our only hope as a species. Enjoy, and let's save the horses by getting the federal legislation passed. Time's a wastin' . . . CJ

Here is something from Stephanie at MHR :

FIRST THING, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY FOR FRED. WILL BE SCHEDULING VET FOR DENTAL WORK (DESPERATELY NEEDED), SHOTS AND EXAM. ALSO WANTED TO SHARE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, FRED AND HIS STABLEMATE HAD ONLY BEEN IN THE CARE OF THIS INDIVIDUAL FOR SEVEN MONTHS AND FRED HAD OBVIOUSLY BEEN THE STRONGER OF THE TWO. THIS PERSON HAD ALL OF HER ANIMALS REMOVED.

I hope this finds everyone doing well this morning! I went out at 4:30 this morning to check on Fred. He is doing real well. He was a bit timid this morning, but he will get use to everyone coming around him. I sat outside for a bit this morning and watched Spirit chasing the turkey herd out of his pen, he is quite the stinker.

A little story to tell you, my nephew who is 7 years old is out here in Paws Rump, visiting with Grandma and Grandpa. He was here when Fred arrived, he looked at him for the longest time and finally spoke up. He looked up at me and asked why his bones were sticking out, and I explained that he was not being fed and that he was hungry. He was quiet for a few minutes and he looked at me again, and said "well when I grow up I will never let the animals be hungry because they are our friends" That statement really tugged on my heart strings. On a lighter note, he was standing in front of Baby B's stall, she had her head sticking out and they both stood there looking at one another, finally Cody reached out put both of his hands on her cheeks and kissed her on the nose and said, You won't be hungry. Wow, if everyone thought that way. Baby B was totally fascinated with this little person, it was cute.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

Peace Love Hope Music & RESPECT - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother Forever & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

PS - Keep FOB lj's partner, jockey "Diamond Jim" in your thoughts today and send prayers, hopes, good wishes his way; he's undergoing surgery for a badly broken arm & damaged rotator cuff resulting from a recent track accident; his injuries turned out to be worse than originally thought.

***repost before Alex turned the page this morning

From the Grandfathers:
Friendship is held to be the severest test of character. It is easy, we think, to be loyal to family and clan, whose blood is our own veins. Love between man and woman is founded on the mating instinct and is not free from desire and self-seeking. But to have a friend, and to be true under any and all trials, is the mark of a man!

(Ohiyesa)

One can never have too many frens!!!

Barbaro and I are asking his frens to email me your stories about how Barbaro affected your life, what you are doing for his legacy, what made you love him, why you are still here months after his passing, etc.

I am compiling these stories for a hopeful book about us, the Family of Barbaro. I hope to entitle
the book Barbaro: Another Comfortable Night.
Those are the words we waited to hear for eight months. Those eight months are when we laughed together and cried together and bonded forever as a famblee.

I have more than 100 stories. They are all stories that need to be be heard. Barbaro was far more than a horse who ran 6 undefeated races.
Help tell the world the real story of Barbaro, from the people who he inspired, the average person, like you and me.

Email me your Barbaro story to

You can write as much or as little as you want.

Kathy S.,

I'm afraid I've taken the art of spoiling Bart to a new level!

I usually have a cup of Diet Coke at my desk and moisture builds up along the outside of the cup. Bart had started the habit of laying down and licking the water from the cup.

But now, whenever I take a drink, Bart expects me to hold the cup up for him to lick it! This way he can just sit there and drink...

So, here I sit, holding a cup for THE CAT! Not too productive....

I will be sure to give the Little Love some Kathy pats and more attention! Thank you Kathy!

I hope Victor Molina can turn a negative into a positive. People are always watching...

Kathy S.,

I did start on a collection of the tuck-ins. But then I ran into an unexpected disappointment and became discouraged.

But, Barbaro and some Fans have taught me that quitting is not an option. I will be back at the tuck-in project full force as soon as I wrap a couple of other things up.

Thank you for asking Kathy. You have encouraged me...

I should clarify: I called my rep about the Farm Bill, not Biden. Biden I called about S311.

Jonna posted earlier today "And people who want to be candidates for President need to know that if they DO NOT back stopping slaughter in the US, that 80% of Americans will be informed of their choices...and they may very well lost supporters through that one choice."

Jonna - how true! After hearing the news last night that Barack Obama will NOT co-sponsor, I contacted his campaign by every method available to me and demanded to be removed from his mailing list UNLESS/UNTIL he co-sponsors!

Re-post from yesterday, but WORTH REPEATING:

Hi, all. This IS important:

Today I met with the aide from my OWN representative here in Arizona.

I made an appointment, and went in with ALL my information, pictures, websites, Daryl and Michelle's book, Sheriff Joe's letter, armed and dangerous, locked and loaded ! I even brought all the medications I use on my own horses. (To prove a point!)

It was a WONDERFUL meeting !

I was there for over an hour ! But here's the point: my rep voted AGAINST the bill last time !

I took ONE GIGANTIC chance, and went in there to switch him around.

Well, I got the aide ON BOARD. We talked a LONG time about the issue, and horses, and team penning, and roping, and HE IS HONESTLY ON OUR SIDE NOW.

Folks, you've got to get out there and GO to the offices and talk to these people if you can !

I made a difference today. PLEASE, if you can, go make an appointment to actually go in and talk to these people.

This is not in any conflict with our strategies. IF there is any way you can make a difference in your own state, go on !

GET OUT THERE ! ! !

If you're a resident of Vacationland and I don't have you on my list, please email me at loveless3@usadatanet.net and I'll add you.

Re: Jonna's post at 3:57 above - It's not just those with presidential aspirations that we can appeal to. We have a non-cosponsoring congressman here in Maine who aspires to take over a Senate seat from a cosponsor. Even though it would mean crossing party lines, guess who's getting my vote?

Called Biden along with today's national TWR Strategy calls - now off to the Indiana calls and will soon post the "extra list" which I was late in posting yesterday and at least 2 posters noticed. (I had it posted before reading their queries.) I try to discipline myself to complete my State and TWR "marching orders" before even glancing at the HAHS extra target list, as I always ask you guys to do as well. So glad I have unlimited LD and time and patience and determination . . . it's the least I can do. (btw my father used to stop the car to move turtles out of the road, and my first visual memory of my mother was her eyedropper feeding a baby bird. Small wonder I am who I am . . .)

Posted by: C. Jaffe at June 20, 2007 5:24 PM

While making your calls, here is something that might put a smile on your face.

I KNOW THE ANSWER

While visiting England, George Bush is invited to tea with the Queen. He asks her what her leadership philosophy is. She says that it is to surround herself with intelligent people.

Bush asks how she knows if they're intelligent.

"I do so by asking them the right questions," says the Queen. "Allow me to demonstrate."

Bush watches as the Queen phones Tony Blair and says, "Mr. Prime Minister, please answer this question: your mother has a child, and your father has a child, and this child is not your brother or sister. Who is it?"

Tony Blair responds, "It's me, ma'am."

"Correct. Thank you and good-bye, sir," says the Queen. She hangs up and says, "Did you get that, Mr. Bush?"

Bush nods: "Yes ma'am. Thanks a lot. I'll definitely be using that!"

Bush, upon returning to Washington, decides he'd better put the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to the test. Bush summons Jesse Helms to the White House and says, "Senator Helms, I wonder if you can answer a question for me."

"Why, of course, sir. What's on your mind?"

Bush poses the question: "Uhh, your mother has a child, and your father has a child, and this child is not your brother or your sister. Who is it?"

Helms hems and haws and finally asks, "Can I think about it and get back to you?"

Bush agrees, and Helms leaves. He immediately calls a meeting of other senior Republican senators, and they puzzle over the question for several hours, but nobody can come up with an answer. Finally, in desperation, Helms calls Colin Powell at the State Department and explains his problem.

"Now look here, son, your mother has a child, and your father has a child, and this child is not your brother or your sister. Who is it?"

Powell answers immediately, "It's me, of course."

Much relieved, Helms rushes back to the White House, finds George Bush, and exclaims, "I know the answer, sir! I know who it is! It's Colin Powell!"

And Bush replies in disgust, "Wrong, you dumb (censored), it's Tony Blair!"

Another good day at Ascot. Robyn, apparently black and white is very popular again this season. Dora, thanks for explaining about popadoms (poppadoms and all the other spellings);they taste really good whichever way you spell them. So we had a French trained winner (German bred and owned) and Irish winners and English winners - altogether an international day again. A sad bit of news from yesterday, Cockney Rebel has a major injury: a fractured pelvis. The good news is that, unlike Fondmort, it is not a life-threatening injury and they are hopeful of getting him back racing in just a month or two:

Rebel Blow for Huffer

Posted by: Liz (UK) at June 20, 2007 5:50 PM

Good moring, FOBs. KEEP CALLING.

I am shocked at some postings I have read this morning making excuses for a horse abuser. Gee, so the young Yes Yes Ohyes hit him hard and he lost his temper. How many victims of domestic abuse have heard similar excuses? "It's the first time I've done anything like that - I make my living off these animals and don't want to hurt them." Gee, couldn't the killers come up with similar statements and we sure would not take that.

How many abusers of animals and spouses say they have never done that before and never will again. He did it this time for sure and we all know it.

Victor Molina lost his temper and abused a horse because he has an anger management problem. The industry should not take the word of an abuser on his future behavior.

It is not relevant that anyone says he is so nice and hard-working and so helpful to other jockeys and the backstretch. He abused a horse on the track and he should never be allowed that opportunity again. What a black mark on an industry that has more than enough black marks.

We are trying to love Thoroughbred racing; we are trying to see the industry reform itself and the best we can do is make excuses for a horse abuser? Is the industry going to tell the world that it is OK to abuse a horse as long as you are a good guy and go to the media to apologize?

If the industry does not make an example of a jockey who loses his temper and takes it out by abusing his horse, just who should it make an example of?

Philadelphia Park was correct in ejecting him. The industry should do the same.

IT'S ABOUT THE HORSE, REMEMBER?

I've been asking the FOBs to buy raffle tickets for a "special" Barbara Livingston "Old Friends" book. I believe this book is very hard to find these days. Proceeds go to Miracle Horse Rescue with 25% going to the Laminitis Fund. Both very worthy causes. Yesterday Stephanie received yet another call to pick up a severely starved & neglected horse. MaryL started a thread on the DB "Neglected/Junkyard Horse Rescued" in the Horse Rescue column. This is the 3rd horse in 3 weeks that MHR has received due to neglect & abuse. Monies donated to buy these raffle tickets will help feed all the horses at Miracle Horse Rescue and let me tell you they are overflowing right now.

Here's the link to the thread at the forum for info on the raffle. $20 bucks for a ticket or 2 for $35 for an autographed "Old Friends". I KNOW how much we've all donated and that the efforts are ongoing. Please buy a ticket or two if you can.

Of course I do not know Mr. Victor Molina, but I do know Alex and I trust what he has said. All Mr. Molina can do is be sorry, ask for forgiveness, and go on to not let this happen again.

I don't like to think of the times that I have yelled at and said things to my child that is abuse. I have asked for forgiveness and cried about how sorry I am.

Posted by: Linda Lee at June 20, 2007 7:05 PM

### At the risk of drawing ire here, since I did not see the incident, I don't consider Victor Molina giving a horse a quick boot in the stomach as "abuse". Bad judgement, yes, but it probably startled the horse far more than hurt it--the guy weighs what--a hundred pounds? I would imagine that many of us who have worked with horses (or other animals) would admit to at least one brief lapse in judgement--and if you NEVER have, then God bless ya!

Twitches, lead chains over the lip and other methods of restraint can potentially cause more discomfort than what Victor Molina caused this horse, so to condemn a man and his entire career (and compare him to a slaughter house worker beating a horse down a kill chute), based on ONE quick kick is unreasonable.

Posted by: Dawn in Omaha at June 20, 2007 7:05 PM

Linda Lee, I agree with you.
I've seen more abuse in person than I care to admit- and one isolated incident (of course, barring something horrific) doesn't warrant someone losing their livelihood, their friends, what have you.

I've also had judgement passed on me- sometimes warranted, sometimes not. There's always more to a situation than meets the eye.

AFTERNOON REPOST (with names of aides)

STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY JUNE 20

We understand there’s good news coming out of DC from those who have gone to lobby their legislators. Can’t wait to hear all about it. We join with everyone in wishing them luck and thank them for their efforts. Here’s hoping for a VERY successful trip. Let’s light up those phone lines this week in support of our friends who have gone the extra mile!!

As you know, we’ve been informed that the sponsors of this legislation do not want to proceed without an appropriate number of cosponsors.

If you are not from Indiana and not in a State group, PLEASE join your State group, or start up one in a State that doesn't have one yet, by contacting Stephanie Breaux, sbreaux1@verizon.net

Any thoughts on this?

I agree with you, Joy in VT. The horse's welfare has to be first if people are going to race them. Abuse is something that needs to have stiff penalties. Just because it's a one time thing, it doesn't make it right. The horse has no idea why it's getting beaten. I have been around animals all my life and no matter how badly my day has been or how short my fuse was a particular day, I would never take it out an innocent animal. It's not okay to abuse an animal.

Barbaro, I love you and hope you are running free in Heaven. I miss you so much. Love you bunches and bunches!!!!

As far as I know, Fondmort is fine - but I haven't seen any news lately. Red Rocks finished fourth and his connections were a little disappointed in his run. Frankie Dettori is in trouble for his ride on Ramonti yesterday and has been referrred to the Horseracing Regulatory Authority. This is for misuse of the whip - I noticed it and when he was interviewed after the race , one of the first things he said was that he thought he would be in trouble with the stewards. The feeling is he will get a 7 day suspension. This is on top of a 6 day ban he is about to serve for a ride of about a week ago where he got 4 days for careless riding (he barged his way out from behind a few horses) and a further 2 days for misuse of the whip. The stewards are very particular and strict over here. Here are some photos of today:

Yes it was Gordon Ramsay's restaurant. Interestingly, I saw him on a chat show a couple of weeks ago and he was back-tracking very fast. He claimed he had never encouraged anyone to eat horsemeat and would not be serving it in any of his restaurants. He said the item on his TV programme had been done by Janet Street-Porter without his being aware that she was going to accost racegoers. He looked pretty embarrassed - but possibly this was merely worry over the damage to his reputation because of the bad publicity.

URGENT! Please read - major miscommunication! I just spoke with Stephanie, the awesome organizer of our state groups...she has been working via phone with John Holland setting the appointments in DC, and requested I post this for her:

Contrary to previous information, John did NOT meet with Senator Obama, rather he met with two aides and the meeting went "very well!" And it was NEVER stated during the meeting that Senator Obama will not co-sponsor....

Please spread this news....

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple.. Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

#### Ruth Stacey,It is a possible reaction to cleaning products but the vomiting concerns me since vomitting is usually in reaction to ingesting something. However, he may have a form of asthma triggered by the products. Cats having an attack usually look like they are trying to cough up a hairball. Maybe if it is asthma, the effort to breathe may upset him enough to trigger the vomitting. In any event, only a thorough vet check can rule out other causes.

Are you home when your person cleans? Is it possible he/she is giving your cat "unauthorized " food ? Also, maybe next time your cleaning person comes you can keep kitty confined to one room and see if that helps.

Good luck. I hope kitty improves.

BARB AZ - do you have my email address? If so, please get in touch...

Posted by: NancyinCT at June 20, 2007 9:44 PM

The calls will work. It was stated on the national news last night that many reps and senators have had to hire extra staff to handle the overwhelming amount of calls complaining about the new passport requirements and lack of planning to handle the millions of people applying. I know from my business they are on a 6 month wait so that is hurting travel tremendously. They had a hearing yesterday in which Senator Nelson blasted the state department for not having this organized. They have extended the deadline 3 times now due to public pressure, that is the only thing that works and the same applies to saving our horses. Hoping for good news from the meeting with Nelson today. Let's keep those phones and faxes ringing.

Wanted to acknowledge the great horse Waquoit who was euthanized last weekend at 24. He won the Jockey Club Gold Cup by 15 lengths and earned over 2.2 million dollars after being purchased for a mere $15,000. He is the broodmare sire of Sweetnorthernsaint and he will now run forever with Barbaro.

Sad to hear about the horse at New Holland that had recently raced at Penn National. I just had a discussion with a breeder and a friend of mine at Three Chimneys that has a few horses running in low level claiming races and just doesn't care, out of sight, out of mind. It boggles my mind. Thank goodness we get it.

LIZ UK - thanks for responding. I guess "no news is good news" as far as Fondmort is concerned. Sorry that Red Rocks didn't have a better run today - I didn't get a chance to watch. HOWEVER, I did see Ramonti's race yesterday and I was pretty horrified....

By the way, I just LOVE the gating of the horses from the few UK races I've watched...no banging, no screaming, very civilized and almost calming! Of course I mentioned this to my father, who was born in England, and his response was "Well, what did you expect?" I would swoon with delight to see an American race begin that way...sometimes I think it's no wonder some of our horse get so worked up in the gate...with their adrenalin already pumping for the race, all that yelling and banging can only make things worse!

regarding post by Ruth Stacey at June 20, 2007 8:43 PM - absolutely your cat could be reacting to chemicals in whatever cleaning products the cleaning lady uses; sounds like that is happening. How long has this been going on, and has the cat always had this reaction after she cleans? Try having her switch to ALL NATURAL cleaning products, using baking soda for some jobs and vinegar for others. Check with your vet, who may be able to recommend specific products that don't upset dogs and cats. I will google and try to find some info for you and post ASAP. We are a very passionate group working for a great cause but sometimes an almost "lynch-mob" attitude creeps in as is happening with Senator Obama and Victor Molina. As it turns out, Senator Obama has NOT said that he will not co-sponsor. How does that make our remarks look?

Regarding Mr. Molina, I agree that his entire career should not be voided by one bad decision. I believe he deserves another chance and that good will come of it.

None of us know every minute detail of these stories and, until we do, we should not be passing judgement or writing people off.

Also, please re-read what you have written before hitting "post". We have invited many people to this site and we owe it to Alex and Tim to be courteous.

** Pam,
I didn't comment on the headbutting jockey, if I remember right. And I am not saying what Victor did was right...I mentioned that above.

All I AM saying is that we ALL mess up- sometimes WAY bigger than what he did- yet we hope to be forgiven for our transgressions.

Heck yes, he did something wrong. Should he have to account for his behavior? of course.
Should he be hung out to dry for it? If this was the way he always behaved, I'd say absolutely.

But according to parties who've known him for years, it is not his normal method to act like such a jerk- and he's been around long enough that the 'good' patterns he's developed should get some consideration in this.

*********REGARDING OBAMA*********

I want to thank Nancy in CT for posting the message regarding Obama for me.
I was busy scheduling some last minute appointments in DC (great job CT and DE!) and couldn't do it myself.
However, I wanted the correct information to go out right away, so I asked her to do it because we were on the phone at the time.

I spoke to John yesterday about the meeting with Obama's aides, and he gave a favorable account.
I don't go to the DB much anymore (too busy!) so I didn't know what had been reported there until today.
I reverified with John today at lunch that the meeting did indeed go well, because I was concerned about what was being said.
He asked me to please come on the Board and correct the information right away.

I'm sorry I didn't report on his meeting with Obama's aides yesterday, but I would never post anything to the Board unless John specifically asked me to.
I would never want to post something that he didn't want to be public knowledge.
So, I decided to err on the side of caution and not report his comments about the meetings in DC until I have permission from him to do so.

I hope everyone understands!

I started a thread under "General" re Save Prairie Dogs and Grasslands. FYI -

The U.S. Forest Service wants to poison and kill thousands of prairie dogs in our National Grasslands. I just sent a message urging officials to withdraw the proposal, and I hope you will, too. Taking action is easy. Just visit the website below:

http://action.defenders.org/dontpoisontheprairie

Prairie dogs play an essential role to the entire grassland community. They provide homes for burrowing owls, rabbits, salamanders and many other critters.

Prairie dogs are also an important food source for many predators, including eagles, hawks, badgers, swift fox and endangered black-footed ferrets. Poisoning prairie dogs can only harm the balance of life on our National Grasslands.

Here's the message I received from Defenders of Wildlife:

Dog-Gone Prairie?

Prairie dogs play an important role in the American plains. Several creatures depend on these burrowing animals for their livelihood -- including the endangered black-footed ferret.

Tell the Forest Service to stop the prairie dog massacre -- before it starts.

Please forward this message on to friends and family who care about wildlife.

Dear C.,

Prairie dogs are an important part of ecosystems on the American Plains. So why is the U.S. government trying to use your tax dollars to kill them?

Tell the Forest Service to stop the prairie dog massacre, before it starts.

Last fall, more than 35,000 activists like you sent comments asking the Forest Service to stop the massacre of tens of thousands of prairie dogs on our National Grasslands.

Prairie dogs provide food for eagles, hawks, badgers, swift fox, endangered black-footed ferrets and other Great Plains predators. Prairie dog burrows provide shelter for burrowing owls, salamanders, black-footed ferrets and many other creatures.

But the Forest Service wants to use your tax dollars to poison and kill tens of thousands of these furry critters and destroy the vital habitat prairie dogs create in our National Grasslands.

Take action now -- write the Forest Service and urge them to stop the prairie dog massacre.

Tens of thousands of prairie dogs could be poisoned and killed -- but it’s not only these tunneling critters that stand to suffer. Because so many other creatures depend on prairie dogs for survival -- from burrowing owls to badgers, swift foxes to snakes -- the entire grassland ecosystem is at risk.

Help stop the Forest Service plan to poison and kill tens of thousands of prairie dogs. Help protect the balance of life on the American Plains.

After a similar rule change in 2005 allowed poisoning in National Grassland areas bordering private land, more than 70,000 prairie dogs were killed. Poisoning now occurs each year in these areas near private land, killing thousands of prairie dogs annually.

Now, the Forest Service is proposing to make it easier to poison and kill prairie dogs anywhere on three public grasslands. They’re even targeting an area in South Dakota’s Buffalo Gap National Grassland called Conata Basin -- key habitat for the recently reintroduced swift fox and our nation’s most important recovery area for the endangered black-footed ferret.

Don’t let this dangerous proposal see the light of day -- write the Forest Service now!

Thank you for all you do to protect our wildlife and wild places.

Sincerely, Rodger Schlickeisen, President
Defenders of Wildlife

Noteable meetings:

Rep. Joe Pitts (PA): Rep. Pitts office was most accommodating to the group, allowing the group to store their bags there during the day. On their way out of the building for the evening, one of the office staff offered up hugs and thanks to the group for what they are doing for the horses

Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.): Sue had an impromptu meeting with the Senator in the elevator. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Sue mentioned the reason for her visit. The Senator said (and this is a quote) "we're going to help you out with that bill".

URGENT....follow-on actions for CONSTITUANTS ONLY of Sen. Jim DeMint (SC): Please call Sen. DeMint's office ASAP and ask for Stacy. Sen. DeMint needs to hear from all South Carolinians. Tell him you want him to co-sponsor S311.

Yes, it certainly is enough cosponsors to get the bill to the floor. A bill can get to the floor with any number of cosponsors. But the sponsors of this legislation do not want to push it to the floor until they know they have all the support necessary to get it passed. They shoot for certain target numbers to avoid failure.
That's the reason for the urgent plea for cosponsors.

The FOB's are invading Arlington Park on Saturday, August 4th.

We need to support this track as it has taken a huge step forward and installed a safer racing surface after a horrible season of accidents last year. In addition, it is time we made our presence known in ILL while we continue our anti-slaughter battle. This will be a day to celebrate all things Barbaro.

We have about 30+ FOB's from 6 states who have already indicated their interest in attending. Please join us as it will be great.

Total cost is $20.00 and includes: A Box Seat ticket, a daily racing guide and a trophy presentation to the winner of our race. We will be announced on the jumbotron and our named race will be in the program.

Go to the DB and look for the Arlington Park Thread under Horse Racing.

I had an interesting and touching encounter today. I was at a grocery store and this woman asked me for advice on how to get rid of rust on silverware. She told me she had injured her back, and then she started tearing up and talking about how she had to put her 11 year old dog to sleep recently, he couldn't stand on his back legs anymore. I listened as she told me how she took the dog to the vet, fed him and hugged him, and told me that he was never a quitter, just like Barbaro. When she finished, I took my Barbaro wristband off and gave it to her. She was overwhelmed, and said she would never forget me, and I think she felt like it was a signal from her dog. It took a few minutes of listening, and a Barbaro wristband to make a difference. Her name is Stephanie, say a prayer for her!

Hiya, FsOB! May the Force continue to be with Maria, Angela, and our team in DC! Kudos to Elisabeth in Ct for your work educating Congressman Murphy's staff.

And bless Donna in caNADA for your boycotting the purchase of Belgian chocolate! What excellent example you are setting for the youngsters in your family! Peace, RMH

Hello Barbaro,

Tonight I think many of your Fans, myself included, will sleep well.

I was catching the posts from time to time and the push to end horse slaughter is NOT letting up! The attempts and requests to raise money for rescues are heroically continuing...

Honey, some of your Fans are in D.C. actually meeting with aides and Senators. We mean business Honey!

Why don’t we grab the pile of blankets in the corner and start passing them around...it’s time to tuck you and your Fans in for the night.

So let’s put down the phones everyone. Lay the paper down next to the fax machine, it will wait until tomorrow. Emailing? Stop. And those in Washington D.C., kick your shoes off, turn down the bed, and get ready to cuddle up. Barbaro wants to go to bed….

There are Dream Angels EVERYwhere! They are carrying signs of anti-slaughter slogans in brightly printed letters, they have their Barbaro t-shirts on, anti-slaughter pamphlets, articles and petitions. There are PayPal addresses being passed around as well!

Let the Dream Angels work for you while you sleep everyone. They will work...to make your dream come true. Thus, the DREAM Angels!

Honey, you and your Fans will have sweet dreams of horses grazing in lush pastures... yes Honey, you may graze with them… children building their appreciation and respect for animals by spending time with the rescued horses, foals bounding into the world.

The world of hope and promise, love and compassion.

Let’s pull the blankets up high. Be sure to fluff the folds perfect for nuzzling. I’ll do yours Honey...

Good night everyone. Sweet dreams to all...soon, I hope to post,
"Your fight is complete. Our voices will forever carry our horses through their days."

Good night Honey. I love you so much...remember, your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days.

Sweet dreams Honey. I'll be here in the morning...both Bart and I. Good night. I do love you. XXOOxxoox

Hello Hope,

Were you able to get outside at all today? I saw on the computer that there was rain on the Eastern half of the states.

Well, are you ready for bed? We'll fluff the folds and pull the blanket up high on your neck.

Something tells me that Little Laurie is a bit sleepy tonight...I just have a feeling. Is she much of a Cuddle Bug?!

Your Dream Angels have everything "soft" with them. Soft blankets and pillows all fluffed to perfection...all waiting for you!

Sweet dreams Hope. I love you sooo much and think about you often. Good night Little One. xxooxxox

Hello Little Laurie H.,

Did you have a good day today? Was it a "Keeper"?! I would love to see you in action! Oh my, what a sight you must be!

Here's your blanket Sweetie. We left a space untucked on your Mommy's blanket so that you will feel her while you sleep and know you are safe.

Your Dream Angels are patiently waiting and they have some soothing stuff going on for you. Maybe to help you cool-your-jets a bit...

Good night Little Laurie H. Dream sweet dreams and know that I love you. Good night. Shhhhhhh...xxooxox

#### To CJ, thanks for sharing Stephanie's story about her nephew's visit to MHR.
To Laurie in MN: Please tell Bart that his "Tante Robyn" recommends Diet Dr. Pepper.
To Marg in Maine: I've missed seeing you in the early AM. Please know that you are in my thoughts. Peace, RMH
To Liz in the UK: Love the fashion update from Ascot. Yes, neutrals are big on the Right Coast of the USA as well.
To Kathy in SC: Yes, it was Gordon Ramsay.
And to Dale & Kathy in SC: Re. the Democratic primary coming up in your home state, please don't forget that CT's US Senator Chris Dodd signed on as a co-sponsor back in Feb. or March. And his staff sent me a lovely, obviously not "canned" letter in response to my asking him to co-sponsor S-311.
To Katherine D.: Wjat a great story about the grieving lady whom you met, named Stephanie. I'm sure that this meeting was no karmic "accident".
To Jeannette Cavalier: Thank you for the address in Albuquerque! Peace, RMH ####

Katherine,

You should send that to the NTRA. I bet they have no idea the good their bracelets have done. If you go to www.NTRA.com and click on Riding with Barbaro, I am sure you will find some contact info. I bet they would appreciate the e-mail.

Looks like our old friend, Hawty Creek, is running in the third race at Penn National on Friday. Tim's Whip Smart is also running! I have to stop by to get a picture of Hawty! Since Penn National doesn't have its grandstand anymore, I'll have to sneak up to the track, but it will be worth it!

LAURIE H - if there were ever any humans worthy of one of your famous "tuck-ins" it is the valiant group of "Washington warriors" who have dedicated their time this week to making a difference...on behalf of Barbaro's legacy, on behalf of ALL the horses, on behalf of us....thank you for including them!

Re: Green cleaning products. A couple of years ago I discovered Method cleaning products, and I *love* them. They smell good, they're cruelty-free, their packaging and ingredients are environment-friendly, AND THEY WORK! They're also more reasonably priced than a lot of other similar products, though more than the regular non-cruelty-free, non-environmental products. My local grocery store carries them, as does Target, and you can buy online as well.

Hay All,

Here's an interesting tid bit. THE GREEN MONKEY, the gorgeous, and VERY EXPENSIVE colt from last year, worked out at Belmont on June 17. Seems like they are getting ready to run.

HAY ALEX, Is there any talk in horsey-circles about a big debut for the beautiful boy?
