Barbaro Updates: 312

updates are now here.

Update 2072: Another thursday afternoon, another afternoon spent with Mike Rea at Freedom Hills. My role has now been reduced to driver and watcher. Mike is now jogging around the ring on his own, and he looks pretty good doing it! I also spent time on the phone today with various horse advocates. I am traveling a steep learning curve getting my head around all that occurs with our racehorses that no longer run, go to the breeding shed or are retired to their owners' farms (many owners / trainers simply don't have farms).

Update 2071: Yeats, the overwhelming favorite, won the 2.5 mile Ascot Gold Cup: YEATS STRIKES GOLD AGAIN. He has now won this race twice and they would like to see if they can make it three:

Asked about the Melbourne Cup, for which he is a 10-1 chance with Stan James, O'Brien continued: "All those races are open to him, but it will be discussed with the owners.

"We would love to come back and win it (the Gold Cup) for a third time. Hopefully, we will be here."

Update 2070: Another warm morning this morning, but a little less muggy. I had three to ride. First out was Gator Nation. He went to the Tapeta track, along with Tim on Real Lace. I galloped a mile and a quarter, Tim and Real Lace a mile and a half. All was well. Second set I was on Kitty (My new name for the Tale of the Cat filly). She went to the dirt track with Tim on Nonpareil. We jogged back to the quarter pole and then galloped a mile and a half together. They went nicely, although Kitty was looking around a little at some of the construction work going on between the dirt track and the Tapeta track (we are building a second gap for the Tapeta track). When a horse looks around they gallop with less focus and off the bridle. Anyway, she will learn and she does continue to improve. Finally I rode Nautical Agent, she galloped a mile and a quarter. Tim was on Quick Quest, Robbie Walsh was on Fortuna. They galloped together a mile and a quarter, I galloped on my own. Nautical went very nicely and then high-stepped it home. As we came on to the track we saw Better Talk Now galloping down the lane. He looked good!

Update 2069: Today's feature race today at Ascot is the 2 and a 1/2 mile Gold Cup: YEATS SPEARHEADS IRISH HOPES.

Sabina Pierce and I hosted a presentation last night at Buzzy's. It was fun to see people out there, talk about Barbaro and his legacy, and hear Sabina's perspective as she clicked through her slide deck of images. A fun evening!

Today I post Wisdom from the Grandfathers for my frens Judy and Donna in Canada ( any other Canada frens, too)

How long have I known you, oh Canada? A hundred years? Yes, a hundred years. And many many 'seelanum" more. And today, when you celebrate your hundred years, oh Canada, I am sad for all the Indian people throughout the land.

For I have known you when your forests were mine; when they gave me my meat and my clothing. I have known you in your streams and rivers where your fish flashed and danced in the sun, where the waters said come, come and eat of my abundance. I have known you in the freedom of your winds. And my spirit, like the winds, once roamed your good lands.

But in the long hundred years since the white man came, I have seen my freedom disappear like the salmon going mysteriously out to sea. The white man's strange customs which I could not understand, pressed down upon me until I could no longer breathe.

When I fought to protect my land and my home, I was called a savage. When I neither understood nor welcomed this way of life, I was called lazy. When I tried to rule my people, I was stripped of my authority.

My nation was ignored in your history textbooks - they were little more important in the history of Canada than the buffalo that ranged the plains. I was ridiculed in your plays and motion pictures, when I drank your fire water, I got drunk -- very, very drunk. And I forgot.

Oh Canada, how can I celebrate with you this Centenary, this hundred years? Shall I thank you for the reserves that are left to me of my beautiful forests? For the canned fish of my rivers? For the loss of my pride and authority, even among my own people? For the lack of my will to fight back? No! I must forget what's past and gone.

Oh, God in Heaven! Give me back the courage of the olden Chiefs. Let me wrestle with my surroundings. Let me again, as in the days of old, dominate my environment. Let me humbly accept this new culture and through it rise up and go on.

Oh, God! Like the Thunderbird of old I shall rise again out of the sea; I shall grab the instruments of the white man's success---his education, his skills, and with these new tools I shall build my race into the proudest segment of your society. Before I follow the great Chiefs who have gone before us, oh Canada, I shall see these things come to pass.

I shall see our young braves and our chiefs sitting in the houses of law and government, ruling and being ruled by the knowledge and freedom of our great land. So shall we shatter the barriers of our isolation. So shall the next hundred years be the greatest and proudest in the proud history of our tribes and nations."

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Tim & Alex! Good morning, fellow Fans!

Like many others, I wish I lived close enough to Fair Hill to attend the many lectures and presentations that have taken place. How wonderful it would be to hear all the expressions of love for Barbaro!

I am off to the North woods for a long weekend this afternoon...no phone, no internet access, just me and 6 of my gal pals! I WILL make my calls before I leave, however!

###Robyn Hoffmann - Thank you for your kind words. Things are better.

Congratulations to Correntina from Michael Matz's barn for breaking her maiden yesterday in the 3rd race at Delaware Park. (I discovered that ESPN has live access to a few tracks each day. Shhh! Don't tell my co-workers!) Safe trips to all who are racing the next few days, especially Miss Hawty tomorrow at Penn National. You Go, Girl!

Thank you, Tim and Alex, for all you do for us. And special thanks to our Washington Warriors.

Hiya, FsOB! Harriette, what lovely words for our 'frens', sisters, and brothers to the North. Kita and I shall get two more "boycott Belgium" letters out in this AM's mail before I leave for work.

Wishing eac of you a deliciously delightful Summer Solstice/Midsummer/St. John's Day today. It is a gloriously bright morning here on the banks of the Thames ... just the sort that our Sweet Prince would've loved to enjoy. Peace, RMH

Good morning all (Marg, glad things are a bit better for you).

Foul weather - cool, wet and windy. It may be better at Ascot, though I know "sharp showers" are forecast which is not good for Ladies' Day. The big race is the Gold Cup run over two and a half miles for 4-year olds and older. Yeats is favourite, but the biggest cheer of the day will go up if Britain's favourite horse, Sergeant Cecil, wins. He's a gorgeous 8 year old chestnut. We bet on anything over here - including what colour the Queen's hat will be today. She's had pink and yellow so far, so - blue?

I love that so many of the Ascot races are run over longer distances, AND include older horses...it seems the UK lets it's TBs have longer careers and given them the advantage of letting some age and development make those legs stronger...is this true, Alex?

Good Thursday morning FOBs

God bless our Washington Warriors and open the ears and hearts of the federal legislators. Let's each one of us continue our part and support those in DC doing all the footwork. I hit a lot of red lights driving home yesterday so I not only completed my call lists but picked up some old ones I had left in the car and called them too.

Marg in Maine - I've been out of the loop for the past week or so - only logging on to get callings lists for the day. Family visits have kept me really busy. So I don't know what may have been wrong but am glad it's better. I, too, hope you have a peaceful, restful weekend.

Equine heaven - you are a delight!!

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Good Morning FOB Family,

I was thinking this morning about all the work we have done and will do to save the horses. If one needed a noble, selfless cause in which to participate, this is surely one. We are giving our time, not to receive anything in return. The horses will be rewarded. We are just their stewards. I read a quote that sums up how I feel. Perhaps you share the same feeling.

June 21, 2007

Quote of the Day
"The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it."
– John Ruskin

Keep calling, e-mailing and faxing. Save the horses. Be Barbaro's voice.... Think of his strength nd courage and carry that with you.

Good day to all....

(I know you asked Alex), but part of the reason that thoroughbreds can go on longer in the UK is that they have the option of becoming hurdlers and chasers which means their careers can extend till they are about 12.

The native people have been treated horribly, in history, all over North America. I applaud their efforts to take back what was theirs, as is happening in my country.

My daughter married a man with native blood, giving my granddaughters a connection to this land. I envy them.

Hurdlers or Chasers...I love that. In this country, there are too many race horses, too many retired racing greyhounds. Everything on a grand scale. Waste just accepted as part of that excessive breeding. This morning I had to go to a website for a Kansas greyhound breeding farm that is gone broke and I have to look into these 8-10.5 year old faces and profiles of these sweet animals and know that I cannot place a 10 year old in this area. And try to figure out how we can take even one of the younger animals if there are any left...

I love the older ones. They are truly blessed by God's hand, I have two broods in the house now...and will always have at least two of these wonderful old girls who turn into puppies when you get them into a home. They never look back. And they love their new lives so.

It puts a rock in my heart. To turn and walk away. I don't know how the rescue people who go to the feedlots and the auctions can do it. I love that we saved that sweet, sad-faced mule, Dandelion. Long may he wave...

Wishing good calling to everyone. Wishing best of luck to all who are still toiling in Washington.
Courage. Courage.

Good Morning Fans/Family of Barbaro

May the ones in Washington open their hearts and listen and pass this bill quickly. Please continue to fax, call, email, letters, whatever it takes...we need to be heard. Horses are being brutally killed, and transporting across borders.

Please remember always the resuces, the fallen Angels, all that suffer, human or animal, and each other.

Jonnagrey - thank you for remembering the greyhounds! I have had four ex-racers: 2 horses and 2 hounds. I love them all and their quirky ways. I wish I had a farm so I could take on more kitties, dogs, and horses.

I remember Cesar Millan on The Dog Whisperer was shocked (the only time I've seen him so) when he asked a woman if she'd had any other aggressive dogs and she responded, a greyhound. He queried, "A greyhound? But they're the sweetest dogs in the world!" They truly are. They are so wonderful considering everything they go through. I'm sure there are some more responsible owners/trainers in the greyhound world, just as there are in the TB racing world.

Does anyone here frequent the Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue? They are in MD and frequent the New Holland Auction, saving as many OTTBs there as they can.

###Harriette, I have been humbled before by North America's treatment of the native people. I have hung my head in shame when learning of the depletion of the buffalo herds and so many more. I have wondered how the lawmakers could exile our native people to reservations of poor land not even suitable for farming. And even now with all that has gone before our native leaders still envision a land of harmony.

I am in awe of the continued wisdom of the forefathers, their everlasting beliefs of the balance of nature and all things inhabiting it. When oh when will the white man learn from our forefathers?

Chief Dan George, a wise and brave leader, one day your vision will be true, we will live in harmony, I pray this to be so.

Good Morning FOB's

Strategy for Thursday June 21

We understand there’s good news coming out of DC from those who have gone to lobby their legislators. Can’t wait to hear all about it. We join with everyone in wishing them luck and thank them for their efforts. Here’s hoping for a VERY successful trip. Let’s light up those phone lines this week in support of our friends who have gone the extra mile!!

As you know, we’ve been informed that the sponsors of this legislation do not want to proceed without an appropriate number of cosponsors. The target number they are looking for in the Senate is 60 (we now have 29) and the House is 218 (we now have 167) We MUST get more cosponsors for this to move forward and save our horses.

IMPORTANT NOTE… Our message is not about PROCEDURE but it is about STRATEGY. We are very well aware of the fact that a certain number is not NEEDED to bring a bill to the floor. However, it is the number that the SPONSORS are looking for in order to assure passage of this legislation. These numbers were given to us DIRECTLY FROM DC and we are passing on the information as requested.

This week our lists will be concentrating on Senators. If they are new to the Congress, they will have no previous record on this subject. Please make sure that you SPECIFICALLY MENTION S311 when making your calls in order to avoid confusion with previous legislation that was passed in the Senate.

Cross-posted from discussion board:

Thought folks here would be interested in this message I got from Anna House this week:

"Todd Pletcher's employees are sending a package to the troops in Iraq and asked the children of Anna House to write letters to the men and women over there.

They were more than happy to...The red folder contains letters from all of our preschoolers telling them to 'come home safe,' and 'thank you for protecting us.'"

I have a photo of what the kids made, but a lack of disk allocation space is preventing me from posting it--am trying to set up a website for Anna House photos but no success so far.

Good Morning, FOB's!

Am glad to hear the DC efforts are being so favorably received. I wish with all my heart that I could have been there - the next paragraph explains why I had to cancel.

The news from the ranch is serious. The boys' "grandmother" has a probable abdominal aortic aneurysm - will know more tomorrow, but she is still refusing medical treatment. Spent a lot of time with the boys yesterday while lugging the hay delivery to the barn. They are trying to comfort any of the family that is with them. They are so wonderful.

Anyway, have a wonderful day. SherryVW - last I knew, you are flying home tonight - safe journey and let us know how the DC campaign went.

Hurdlers and Chasers - hmmmmmm.... could someone explain these terms. How I wish we did it the UK way - one could get to know the horses over a career of some length even if one isn't a die hard gambler who only looks at breeding and conformation and probability. Seems like here they win a few races and poof, disappear because they go to stud or become brood mares.

Yes, Mid-Atlantic Rescue does a wonderful job.
Actually, that's where Nickname, the horse that Mr Boxcar rescued (through Friends of Twilight)from his March 13th win resides. Speaking of Mr Boxcar, he saved another horse this week: Dixie Wrap, who will probably be going there as well. This from his June 9th win in the Peppy Addy Stakes...!!!

CONNECTICUT NEWS

A Better Ending For Loyal Friends
June 21, 2007
By CHARLES STANNARD, Courant Staff Writer It was the heartache of losing beloved horses that led Phil Stull and Jeff Blaschke to propose what could become the state's first crematorium specifically for equines and other hoofed animals.

Stull, 62, a retired high school teacher, and Blaschke, 46, a carpenter, met thanks to a love of horses. After boarding their horse elsewhere, Stull and his wife, Joan, wanted to "bring our horse home." So Stull bought property on Roast Meat Hill Road in Killingworth that included a barn and a house badly in need of renovation.

SPONSORED LINKS

That led Stull to Blaschke, who had bought a log cabin home and large barn on Route 81 in Killingworth in 2000. The men quickly became friends, bound by their affection for horses.

Sadly, both men lost horses to sickness in 2005.

"It was like losing a member of the family," said Stull. "They are huge, they are strong, they are spectacular, but they are delicate."

And they're not like a dog or cat that can be buried in a shoebox under a tree. Horses, some weighing more than 1,200 pounds, must be buried in holes dug by backhoes or other professional-grade equipment. Sometimes that equipment isn't readily available, forcing the horse owner to wait to bury the animal. And some farms aren't large enough to accommodate such a burial site.

Stull said a brother-in-law who worked in the swimming pool business helped him dig a hole large enough to bury his horse. "We tried to find an alternative and there isn't any," he said.

Blaschke said the slow process of burial made his loss feel even worse. "We decided there had to be a better way to say goodbye to your friend instead of throwing him into a muddy hole," he said.

So the two came up with the idea of opening a horse crematory.

Stull said they found several horse cremation services in Pennsylvania and the Southern states, but only a handful of such businesses in New England. Balmoral Pet Cemetery in New Milford performs occasional horse cremations, and Whispering Pines Animal Cremation in Dover, N.H., offers a service more focused on horses.

John Silva, who owns Whispering Pines, said the number of horses cremated "goes up and down," averaging about 20 horses per month. Silva said he is willing to "go anywhere in New England" to pick up a horse.

Alan Ade, owner of Balmoral Pet Cemetery, said he has cremated several ponies, and is upgrading his equipment to handle larger horses. "I need to get some new loading equipment to handle the horse in the most delicate manner possible," he said.

Stull said the lack of equine-specific cremation services, and the fact that Connecticut has the largest number of horses per square mile - 60,000 - of any state in the nation, convinced him and Blaschke their labor of love could also be a viable business venture.

Next came finding a location - Stull found the Plattwood Park site "while snooping around in Deep River one day" - and learning to navigate zoning regulations. No towns in the state provide for horse crematories in their zoning regulations, making approval a two-step process, Stull said. He and Blaschke are seeking an amendment to the Deep River zoning regulations to allow livestock cremation under special permit in an industrial zone. A public hearing on the amendment before the planning and zoning commission will be held today at 7 p.m. in town hall. If the amendment is approved, the partners will then seek a special permit to open the crematorium in the industrial park off Route 80.

The service proposed by Stull and Blaschke would be a "one-call type of situation," in which the two partners would pick up the horse using a forklift, a gurney, and a temperature-controlled wooden box, or "cradle." The horse would be transported by flatbed truck to the Deep River facility, where it would be cremated in a brick and steel propane-fired furnace with a capacity of up to 2,500 pounds.

Blaschke said they would be willing to travel anywhere in Connecticut, and to the border areas of neighboring states, to pick up a horse. Stull said the distance traveled would be a factor in the price for the cremation, which he estimated would average about $2,000. He said the type of urn used for the ashes would also be a factor in the price.

Stull predicted the service would probably dispose of several horses a week. "We're not really looking for volume because volume brings challenges," he said.

The proposal has the support of area horse owners. Julie Shepard, owner of Whitewood Farm Equestrian Training Center in Killingworth, said she is pleased Stull and Blaschke have stepped forward.

Noting that not all horse owners have enough land to bury their animals, Shepard said, "It's a much-needed service for the entire state."

FOR BARBARO

When the world loved a horse named Barbaro
And the journalists, they wondered why
A Derby winner brought low would make them cry
Who broke his leg in Maryland and in eight months
Could not be fixed and softly was put down to die.

So many theories about the tears and all those prayers
Those gifts of flowers, apples, carrots, and sugar too
And messages to a horse that could not even read
However bold and brave he was, the undefeated one
Who finished races by his will, the strong of heart.

When the world lost a horse named Barbaro
What stirred a million, million souls for the head-strong stallion?
Juniper torchlight within minds deep recesses and Lascauxs cave
Cro-Magnon stands before a wall, paints a running horse--small head
A bay-- big muscular body, slim limbs, black mane and tail and hooves.

The scientists, they wonder too looking at Cro-Magnons bones,
Why it is in human hearts to weep for horsesbut the ancestors knew:
For their beauty, for their power, for their glory, for their grace,
That will be ruined by Death even as we all are ruined by Death
And for the sense that God is in the horse when he makes his final race.

For a good read about English racing (with a mystery, too), pick up a book by Dick Francis, former jockey to the Queen Mother. Probably one of his earlier books that deal more with racing and especially his autobiography.

Good Morning to all those who love Barbaro. I watched the HBO special last night and can not get him out of my mind. I want to help anyway possible to keep Barbaro's Legacy alive.
I am in central Virginia near the TRF at James Madison's Montpelier. God bless that amazing animal...he was and is truly a gift from GOD.

Nancy,
I was so pleased to read that this morning. It made me proud to love here. The article can be found on ct.now.com and comments can be left. Hopefully it will spread throughout. And yes they are delicate, and should only be treated with respect even a mean one...there is a reason I believe for all reactions. I like the way they remove them it is done with dignity. Finally!

Good morning, all!

Renee, what an interesting article. I thought you said that those people who were pro-slaughter that you met last weekend said that horses can't be buried in Connecticut? Apparently they can, if you have the room... they were sure misinformed about a lot, eh?

What a great service this is. I am still shocked that our state has the most horses per capita. Because I live in what has become the congested part of the state, all I see are cars :(

Belated congrats to Elisabeth for her hard work! Let's pray that Murphy gets on board, the sooner the better.

Posted by: Jane in CT at June 21, 2007 3:08 PM

Jane,
I was shocked to know that we had the most horses. I would have thought other states.

They told me it is illegal to bury a horse on private property here in CT. That does not mean people don't do it if they have the room. Not everyone knows the laws ;)

Go to JustHorses.com,(good site) look at the list of horse farms. We sure do have them here I never would have thoought so.

Hi Friends,
reading the first post of the day, from Harriette Brillianthawk, urged me to want to share my feelings regarding what I "SAW" in the movie "Apocolypse" (spelling??) by Mel Gibson.

What I "saw" there was all about the SLAUGHTER BOUND HORSES !! How those Mexican Indians were living in peace and harmony (the pampered racehorse, showhorse, kid's pony, beloved family horse etc) - then captured and sent on a long journey, taken away from their children, leaving them to fend for them selves and probably die (the horses going on a truck to auction-to feedlot-to slaughter and new mothers/pregnant mares being separated from their foals) - then standing in line, watching in terror their friends getting their heart cut out of their bodies and being beheaded (the fear of those horses at the slaughter house standing in line to be killed and smelling fear, blood, urine and hearing the screams...)...

And then the ONE indian, who managed to escape, to go back to his land (forrest), find his family and again live in peace and harmony, but being changed, always living with the scars after seeing EVIL, and being thankful for his life!!! There I saw THE RESCUED HORSES!!! The lucky ones, who were saved by the rescue organizations and all the FOBs, the mares who where able to keep their babies safe and alive, the ex-racehorse who after seeing the EVIL for a moment, were again SAFE and cared for but forever changed...

Anyone else seeing any on that in the movie?...

from Kat (not posting here very often, but on the discussion board) :-)

RENEE, JANE and anyone else who is interested: I posted this info to the CT State Group in my start-up letter...thought it was fascinating!

according to the November 2006 newsletter of the CT Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, "CT is estimated to have over 60,000 horses - the largest per capita number among the 50 states."

Moring Beautiful Babaro....I Love YOU!!!!

### Nancy.. I sent you an email with an up-date on Dixie and Tarzan. These two horses are in state custody in Portland Oregon and need homes. They have been well taken care of since the woman that abused them was arrested in December... Now they are ready for homes....

The numbers to call are:
Micheal Oswald 503-988-7387 and
Michelle Luckey...... I don't have her phone number....

I cannot put this on the DB so I have to put it here. I am going to check on these horses today..... There was a 6 month old baby that died of starvation and may the little one rest in peace.......

Cheers.............

######### It is really hard for me to help horses when I cannot post in the DB.... I don't know what the glitch is but I cannot go in there.... I would have been able to help a lot more horses if I was able to......

Michaels extension is 25234..... They will be around at 9 AM PST.........

Kathy S.,

Today I brought a breakfast sandwich in, went to help a driver and turned around to find Bart's head IN THE BAG up to his shoulders!

My boss, without any sympathy, explained it was because Bart's Mommy (me) never taught him "no". (I couldn't argue)

Bart was after the egg part of the sandwich so...yes, I shared!

We think he's feeling a bit better. Bart was spotted at the neighboring business this morning, slowly strolling back our way.

Thank you Kathy for asking. He received his breakfast, Kathy pats and some water. He is now sacked out in a co-worker's office. Ah, the life...

Jen...what happened to Astra???

Posted by: JOAN ROYA at June 21, 2007 4:14 PM

Renee

Loved the article on cremation for horses. There is a definite need for this service for the all of the U.S.

It is unfortunate that the cost is going to be about $2000.00. There are many people that will not or more importantly cannot afford that. I think that is one of the reasons that people support the slaughter of horses. They can get money for the disposal of their animal instead of paying to have the animal euthanised and then buryed, rendered, etc.

I still believe burial, cremation, or rendering has to be the better the way to go.

Thanks again for the post

Posted by: Jennie (Kentucky) at June 21, 2007 4:20 PM

### Joan- Astra was euthanized from complications of colic following foaling. Things can get messed up inside when these mares foal and a lot of them colic afterward. Jen

GOOD MORNING FOB'S!!!
THE FIGHT CONTINUES TO SAVE AMERICA'S HORSES!!!

MORNING REPOST

I love Fondmort also, so I read your post with interest and loved seeing the pictures of him! !
I used to ask LizUK to check on him for me and she was great at reports about him. I had lost touch with him but had hoped that he had fully recovered. the last I heard his nurse was amazed at his recuperative ability.
He is such a classic beauty in his pictures.
Thanks for your post and pictures.BB

### Renee.... I just emailed Alex. I called Michael here and left a message on his voice mail. I am going over there this afternoon to see these two horses.... Since they have taken these horses away from the abuser (fined her and gave her 3 years probation, they have put 200 pounds on one and I am not sure how many on the other. There were 6 horses al-together. I only know about the baby being put to sleep that was 6 months old. This all happened in December and they have had them (getting them back to health) and now they are up for adoption. I will have pictures later today of these horses and I am going to be speaking with these people this morning.

##### Alex.... Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze check your emails.

Good afternoon FsOB:
We met with Senator McCaskill and her staff this morning. Senator McCaskill voted yes in committee and therefore supports S. 311. When it comes to the floor, she will vote yes. She will not, however, be a co-sponsor and here's why. She is only going to co-sponsor legislation which she supported in her platform. She will support other legislation, but just not co-sponsor.
Bottom line: she supports S. 311! It is no longer necessary to target her office for calls of support.
Sherry and Daryl (with great fatigue)!

Daryl, Sherry et al

Thank you for your tireless efforts to save our horses. It saddens me that someone who supports the legislation refuses to co-sponsor knowing how critical it is to have the numbers to bring the Bill to the floor. Are you saying that no amount of calls will change her mind on the matter?

Posted by: cathypotter/california at June 21, 2007 5:38 PM

Daryl- thanks for trying. If anyone could do it you could. At least we know she is on her side. P.S. I dont own Astra, she was just a wonderful racehorse owned by the late Allen Paulson (Cigar).

###Bearbear Update. We have been without a new skunk trophy for almost one week. I think the family must have hightailed it out of town when they found out there was a new sherrif in town. (Bear). He is so happy and content. He plays hard with his new best buddy Genie and they fight over who gets to chew on the Antlers that someone drug home. He has been very protective over his new home and is a very good watchdog. (except barking at 2 AM) I am very happy that I agreed to take him. Since he has the same B-day as my deceased Koda, I think her spirit is in him. He has the same personality and a lot of the same habits. I just whisper, I know you are in there girl.

Hay y'all. Haven't read anything here yet - just a glimpse of Harriette's post with a message from Chief Dan George. Can't wait to go back and savor it.

I'm early today with the extra target list from HAHS. PLEASE don't embark on this list until AFTER completing today's marching orders from your State Leader and the TWR national strategy list for today. If you aren't in a State group, PLEASE join one - email sbreaux1@verizon.net - or at least contact your own Sens and Reps who are not yet cosponsors. Info available at Horse AntiSlaughter link (under "Barbaro") at top left of this page.

And one more request:

When you are through with your spiel to each Rep's staff about horse slaughter, please say - "Just one more thing, different topic" and tell them you are OPPOSED to The Farm Bill, HR 2419, because of its inclusion of Section 123 - that limits the right of States to enforce State laws regarding food production/safety - and would apparently invalidate existing State antislaughter laws and State and local laws regarding animal welfare. (Have been alerted by HSUS and SAPL about this teeny provision stuck in at the last minute into this Bill by the last subcommittee it was in.) Just tell them you oppose The Farm Bill, HR 2419, because of Sec. 123 - and ask the staff to check it out for themselves.

Now here's the extra target list - Humanity Against Horse Slaughter daily national target list for Thursday 6/21. These legislators are being contacted by other groups today, so our voices add to the impact.

All are Reps, and apparently all are new with no prior position on the issue. Ask them to cosponsor HR 503.

YES ... take Sen. McC askill off the list !
Sitting here in cafeteria of one of the Senate Bldgs - waiting to meeti up w/Angela and other FsOB .... We've had 3 appts today - one more to go -
for a tally of about 12 ! Tongue is fuzzy from talking so much - smiling - thinking - rationalizing - rushing ..... has been invigorating ... and exhausting. This cow girl from Chicago has stepped back into the fast-moving city life - whew - it's interesting watching the process and meeting the folk - I am, however, ready to return to cowgirl-land .... carrots - apples and doggie treats ! Big trees and beautiful scenery here - efficient METRO system, and the need to walk fast returns w/thoughts of my growing up years in Chicago!
Alotta great work's been done here - and the passion and focus is evident ! In reading the posts - I read of new sponsors and good success. I'm proud to be involved here, in the trenches - and proud of all of you, at home ..... sending other kinds of support. As a "family" we will get this job done ! We will have more thoughts and feedback for you when we recoop - regroup - and get back home.

Anita, hurdles are low fences that are easy to knock over as opposed to the brush fences that steeplechasers jump which are high and solid and sometimes have diches in front of them. The races tend to be at various distances somewhere between 2 and 4 miles (chases are usually longer than hurdle races). I thought you might like to see this site :

Lisa Miller

This has some good paintings of both hurdling and chasing and also has some lovely paintings and photographs of Fondmort. (I'll keep on the lookout for some up-to-date news on him).

### Daryl- when you get home, will you call me so we can discuss in detail about McCaskill. I am not sure if I should be angry with her or not. I know she will vote yes, but how can you support something without co-sponsorship. I really worked on her behalf(on my own) to get her elected last fall. I feel let down, and dont know if I should call her and vent. Jen

##### I need to say this because I was just told in an email that I was destructive to the board. I have done nothing but help the horses. Well I did not get a legitimate reason or anything. No more help from me at all and the only ones that will suffer are the horses. I have done a lot for horses and now I am not going to do anymore.

I did not deserve this and as I was just told, he would post it himself. Go ahead and post it. You are only hurting the horses.....

Good luck with you tasks... You have LOST a FOB and more to boot.... I am not helping the horses anymore because according to the boss, I have been nothing but a what-ever.... I am sorry but why would I want to be involved and help horses when I am treated like that.

Good-BYE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can find a much more professional place to practice my involvement and be of help than this....

I am sorry Alex but you gave me NOTHING and no reason at all.. All you said was I was being destructive to the board... Now everyone knows what you told me........

I feel like that is apart of Barbaro's legacy , and I cannot begin to express how crazy I am about Barbaro. I loved him as much as a family member. I can't explain it, but he touched my heart in such a way. So just let me know what to do. My email is amiegtrotter@yahoo.com, if that helps. SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION TO PROHIBIT HORSE SLAUGHTERING FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

Padavan’s measure will protect all horse statewide from cruel and inhumane treatment

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

The New York State Senate today announced it has passed legislation, sponsored by State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens), to prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

The measure would make it a misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in a prison, for those who purchase, trade, offer, import or export a horse or horse flesh with the intent to slaughter it for human consumption.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 49,000 horses were slaughtered in the United States in 2003, a 16 percent increase over the previous year. The dramatic increase is primarily the result of European and Japanese efforts to find “safer” sources of meat following concerns regarding Mad Cow disease.

“This legislation establishes strong criminal penalties for individuals who brutally slaughter any horse for human consumption,” Senator Padavan said. “Swift enactment of this legislation would help ensure that all horses are protected from prolonged suffering and coldhearted treatment. I urge the state Assembly to join my Senate colleagues and I by passing this bill before the end of the legislative session and show that this callous and inhumane practice will no longer be tolerated in New York.”

“Countless New Yorkers enjoy our State’s rich horse racing tradition, and even more are in awe of the majesty and beauty of these fine animals,” Senator Bruno said. “This legislation will protect horses from a few individuals who would slaughter them for human consumption, and ensure that they are treated properly and humanely.”

The Padavan bill would protect all members of the equine family from slaughter for human consumption, including horses and ponies, along with donkeys, mules and burros.

Many of the horses protected under this bill arrive at the slaughterhouse after being purchased at a livestock auction by middlemen working for slaughter plants. Additionally, the improper use of stunning equipment often results in repeated blows and prolonged suffering of the animals.

While the offense is subject to up to one year in prison, a civil penalty of up to $1,000 may be imposed on an individual and $5,000 on a corporation for the first violation in lieu of criminal prosecution. Subsequent violations would be punishable by fines of up to $25,000.

The legislation is supported by a number of nationally-recognized celebrities, including Bo Derek and Mary Tyler Moore.

The bill has been sent to the Assembly.

AFTERNOON REPOST, SHELLEY A DEBRA WI
LIST WITH AIDES, still includes Sen McCaskill

So the New York bill would prohibit export out of New York of horses for slaughter anywhere. Soumds good to me! AND - this is precisely the kind of State legislation that (probably) would run afoul of that Section 123 in the Farm Bill, that I posted about before.

This is great news - more evidence that more and more PEOPLE are appalled by the industry. Should turn SOME heads in DC, wouldn't you think?

btw - in what States is it NOT illegal to slaughter/import/export horses for such purposes of human consumption? Anybody please?

Cathy Potter and Jen:
Yes, co-sponsors carry weight, but there are many, many other variables involved. A bill can pass with one co-sponsor or fail with many co-sponsors.
Senator McCaskill is fulfilling her campaign promises by co-sposnor legislation on the main issues she laid out: government overspending.
In her case, please remember, she voted yes in committee and that is a powerful committment.
Co-sponsorship holds power in case someone puts a hold on a bill. I'll explain later as Sherry and I are headed into another meeting.
John Holland and I just got done discussing this very case and heres the recommendation, rooted firmly in the fact that Senator McCaskill and her legislative aide promote their constituents to call (on all issues):
1. Keep calling and urge her co-sponsorship
2. Be professional and courteous
3. Provide information to validate why you
support S. 311 and why you believe she should.

CA has a no slaughter law but it doesn't prohibit transport. That's the key. Until transport is stopped horses will still be slaughtered whether here in the US or Canada or Mexico.

I believe the quarter horse assn. is for the slauther plants. same old story "there will be too many to take care of". I think we need lots of media attention since most people are not even aware of the horrible end of our gentle and beautiful friends. I am not sure how to get the media attention. RE - POST RESCUE FUNDRAISER INFORMATION

Regarding the raffle tickets for the Barbara Livingston "Old Friends" book: I have to admit that when I first saw the price of the tickets, I thought it was a little high (keep in mind that I am an old fart and I think the price of EVERYTHING is high, lol!).

But I was looking at this ALL WRONG. And when I really thought about it, I decided to buy a ticket (and I might just buy another, if I can).

Here's why:

1. 25% of the money goes directly to the Laminitis fund at UPenn.

2. The rest of the money goes to CARE FOR RESCUED HORSES at Miracle Horse Ranch.

3. To my knowledge, MHR has NEVER asked for any donations to help care for horses "rescued by FOBs".

4. As Cathy pointed out in her post, MHR has recently been asked to take in horses ravaged by neglect and/or abuse (these horses are particularly expensive to care for)- THIS WAS THE "CLINCHER" FOR ME.

5. AND !!! AS A SPECTACULAR BONUS, you could WIN an autographed copy of Barbara Livingston's "Old Friends" book.....try finding one at ANY price!

So, please do what you can to help - get together with a friend to buy two tickets at the discounted price! Or share the price of one ticket....then share "custody" of the Livingston book if you win it! One of our FOB lawyers could "draw up" the papers for you, LOL!

Thanks for listening,

Just posted this on Joe Biden's blog:

Please come out and publicly stand up against horse slaughter for human consumption, by cosponsoring S 311. I am thrilled to see so many comments about this issue on this blog. As a lifelong horseowner, I am aware of the profound difference between humane euthanasia and what takes place on the way to, and at, the slaughter plants. Please take note that the Senate in the State of New York has just approved an antislaughter bill that also prohibits export out of the State for that purpose - further evidence of the will of the American people. And please take note of the increase of American equines exported for slaughter for human consumption, per the USDA official statistics from the government website, when the first 4 months of this year are compared with the first 4 months last year. As the slaughter plants within the US have been closing down, the exports have more than quadrupled. The federal legislation (S 311 / HR 503) is essential, to stop the export. Although S 311 has come out of the Commerce Committee without amendments, we have been advised there is a “hold” on the bill, so that without greatly increased support via cosponsors, the bill will not progress to a vote. We sure don’t want a repeat of last session, do we? In light of all the facts and the changing landscape - my question is - Sen. Biden - WHY WON’T YOU COSPONSOR S 311 NOW? Thank you. Caroline Jaffe, Hammond, IN

I see lots of great comments by many familiar names. Keep it up!

june 21,2007
the beginning of summer

young with promise and hope
the horses find their new homes
perhaps puzzled and
almost
in shock
to feel the soft hay
the quiet sounds of working feet and
hands holding a sweet something

tender grass near by
clean water and the possibility of having another handful of grain

to match the deep well of kindness
from new owners and caretakers
across our land
quilted indeed
by so many folks..
so many good folks
traveling to washington
-shelley ,angela ,john and many more..
our voices ..voices
.in tune
thank you
is the ever enough?

through summer humid heat
evocations from another age
when cotton,bales thick in texture
piled up in washington square
long expanses of dark brown earth
just a
FEW MILES
AWAY FROM
THE FAMOUS SWAMP
you see
realms of grain and vegetables--suckd up somewhere on a train
..gone
in a steady stream
of commerce--

'The need to knwow
what answers we get and log it all down to hold
THEM
accountable
for sleeping without worry
when horses
like cowboy
cry silently to each other
wondering what kind of hell is about to break from the hard
and concrete and grassless floor

no beat from the earth
hooves on silence..cold hard silence..no breath ..nothing
..NOW, FOR SOME ---

a soft nicker is answered
even in the night 'a soft light
at the end of the barn

to say thank you to all
who hold these invisible ones in their hearts

bless the fans of BARBARO

'to write from one ;s kitchen table
to the marble floored senate halls

the politicians
who often get
so out of touch
for the beat of life
we feel
hurt a horse
you hurt everybody down the line
yourself
that flame inside
that does not turn to the other side
denial
indifference
apathy
yes
the hell of apathy
that barren landscape of no return.
.nothingness
..
its consequences
creeping
even
into cubards and blanket chests and gardens
..fences start to multiply
---
..and in the day
the luster of cowboy;s fight to live
'
'to strengthen and hold him up

with all
our arms..and hands
for all
all the horses
so kindly rescued.
messengers of LOVE
greatness
big hearted gentle forgiveness
skins torn and bones beaten
bullets lodged.
eyes gouged..stinging memory fading with your love

some symphony
that

HUMANE..

what then
is that for
me,,
you

today?

in the light

'martita.

Judy in Ct @ 7:22pm #########
Glad you are back and also glad to hear you were able to make your calls even during family problem.
I hope everything is okay for you now, and welcome back. You are back on a good day with news from the D.C. people doing so well. See ya.

Oh well, I have finished my calls, ( unless CJ comes on later and guilts me out with MORE, lol)

I posted it EARLY today, BB! Here it is again:

REPOST [excerpts]:

Update - without exception, the aides of the Reps. thanked me and were most appreciative that I called sec. 123 of the Farm Bill to their attention.

And I posted earlier of my "aha!" moment with Sen. Bill Nelson's aide (from the TWR strategy list). I will not be surprised to see him sign on in the immediate future. The last several I have made such a prediction on, came through.

Hay Bobbie B~ Thanks for the 'welcome home' and the good wishes! I've missed this place. I've left more voice mails in the past few weeks than talked to a live human, but I got it done just about every day! One of our very own CT FOB's (Corrine) is down in DC and I can't wait to hear from her when she get back. It has been a good day in Barbaro-land!
