    Barbaro Updates: 317

    updates are now here.

Update 2097: A good day's work today for jockey Julien Leparoux: Leparoux Rides Six Winners at Churchill. His principal boss is under scrutiny: Biancone hearing pending.

Update 2096: Roy Jackson has been elected to the Breeders' Cup board of members and trustees: Thirteen Elected to BC Board of Members, Trustees.

I had a long conversation with Mrs. Jackson earlier today. As part of that conversation she let me know that Man in Havana, Barbaro's 3yo half brother (by Quiet American), has been retired. They were unable to get him to the races, and while plans for his future are uncertain (he is a gelding) he has such a nice disposition I would imagine he may have a future in one of a few fields.

Update 2095: I have added a new page to the wiki and linked from the left hand nav bar here: FOB Gatherings. The first summer gathering appears to be July 1.

Update 2094: Another very warm day. I only had one to ride, I guess you might as well call this retirement! I rode Kitty, and went to the dirt track with Tim on a Two Punch two year old. Both are pretty early in their education so they should be a good match. They went well together, galloping a mile and a half. On the way out to the track I saw Mediman grazing. She looked well after her effort yesterday, Tim was pretty upbeat about it, it turns out she only got beaten a couple of lengths for everything. We talked about Nautical Agent, who ate up great last night and was winnying for her food this morning. We are just a little perplexed at her two performances so far.

Some great pictures of Fair Hill: Fair Hill photographs.

Update 2093: Horse racing in the US is declining in popularity. The viewer numbers for the Belmont, both on track and on TV, were down. The Florida Derby, last year won by Barbaro, was not even shown on TV this year despite NBC owning the rights to the race. The first two legs of the Triple Crown belong to NBC. The final leg, ABC / ESPN. Its a mess. It would be interesting if we could have some governance from the top that could enable us to consider something similar to NASCAR perhaps ? Commentary: Follow That Car.

Such a shame about horse racing. We saw last year that everyone is interested in horses. Speaking of horses can we focus on a horse race each week like we did last year Alex??

So true that horse racing is declining in popularity in the US (except for what I observed in Lexington). Many factors involved but I'd like to add a few observations from this neck of the woods: a) as Ray Kerrison wrote last month, the stars of racing are retired to stud so quickly b) Belmont and Aqueduct have made it increasingly difficult to get to the track via public transportion and Belmont's racing times and outdoor smoking restrictions are a bit ridiculous - honestly, I haven't been out there since DancinginmyDreams broke down c) too many well televised grizzly breakdowns (Go For Wand, Timely Writer et al as well as Mike Venezia's death at Belmont turned away a lot of interest and finally d) not as much good writing and reporting about racing (exceptions include Ray Kerrison and Paul Moran) - some of it is truly sloppy or lazy (I'm not talking about you Alex - you've been good for racing). Just my opinion.

NEW: Rockford judge says he can't rule on Cavel | 2 comment(s)

In a surprise ruling Monday, U.S. District Judge Frederick Kapala said he can't rule on a suit by DeKalb horse slaughterhouse Cavel International until a federal appeals court first rules on an appeal by The Humane Society of the United States.

Kapala, a federal judge in Rockford, has been presiding over the court battle between Belgium-based Cavel, the last remaining horse slaughterhouse in the country, and the Illinois Attorney General's Office. Cavel is fighting a law signed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich in May banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption. The lawsuit by Cavel claims the state cannot specifically protect one species of livestock from slaughter and not others and maintains the law does nothing to ensure humane treatment of the animals.

The HSUS filed a motion early this month to intervene in the case. Had Kapala granted the motion, the HSUS would have been considered a defendant in the case, able to call and cross-examine witnesses. Instead, Kapala denied the motion, and the HSUS appealed that decision June 19.

Kapala issued a statement Monday saying in effect that he cannot make any further rulings on the case until the appeals court decides whether the HSUS should be included in the case. Kapala had been scheduled to make a final ruling on the case by Thursday.

DeKalb County Assistant State's Attorney John Farrell said it is not known what impact the delay will have on a temporary restraining order that has permitted Cavel to continue operating while the matter has been in court. The restraining order expires at midnight Thursday.

See Wednesday's Daily Chronicle for expanded coverage of this developing story.

    Good Morning FOB's

    Strategy for Wednesday June 27

The new developments at Caval have upset many. But we must let the legal process work and be patient. I KNOW it's hard to be patient and we've had MANY setbacks. But we're asking you once more to hang in there and not dwell on this new development. Instead, put your energies into getting this federal legislation passed so that we never have to worry about this again!!

The GOOD news is that we have THREE more cosponsors in the House!!! Congratulations to everyone who's been making those calls!!

As you know, we've been informed that the sponsors of this legislation WOULD PREFER NOT to proceed without an appropriate number of cosponsors. It does NOT mean they CANNOT proceed. We MUST get more cosponsors for this to move forward SUCCESSFULLY.

IMPORTANT NOTE Our message is not about PROCEDURE (there are many ways a bill can get to the floor) but it is about STRATEGY. We are very well aware of the fact that a certain number is not NEEDED to bring a bill to the floor. The SPONSORS are looking for the higher number in order to assure passage of this legislation.

    List for Wednesay

    Aide Tasha Bradley

Don't forget to call your OWN representatives! In addition, when you contact your Representatives in the House today please remember to urge them to oppose SECTION 123 OF THE AMENDMENT to the 2007 Farm Bill. Section 123 of the Amendment would nullify any State or Federal legislation that would prohibit transport of animals, INCLUDING HORSES, for the purpose of slaughter. It could actually allow the Texas slaughterhouses to open again. You might want to start with HR503 and end with this just to let them know that this bill is trying to make an end run around the federal legislation that we are trying to pass. This way they can connect the dots!!

There is still a need for state groups..they've been VERY effective in getting cosponsors. Right now we're looking for leaders in for Missouri, Louisiana, Vermont and New Hampshire. To find out how you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

We've received word from several offices that the pro slaughter people have gotten organized and are making a lot of noise this year. We can't let them be louder than us. Remember.WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE.let it be heard!!

Thanks and have a great day.

Courage for all of us today about Cavel. God please make this man get off the dime. It makes my stomach turn to know that slaughter will continue while these legal eagles dick around (sorry Alex) I cannot get the foals out of my head...the foals, for god's sake. FOALS>

    God

God, keep us steady, help us not to collapse under the weight of this. Let Angela be an example for us, of one who stands as a witness to the holocaust, one who refuses to be silenced or deterred.

God: I am only one. But I can do some things to help. Let me feel strength and clarity when I make my calls, let me try not to think of what I cannot do, but value in what I CAN do. And let me be always a support for my brothers and sisters in this work...those who despair or who feel that they too can do nothing of import.

We are the House of Barbaro. We are his legacy.
We must just put one foot in front of the other, and keep our eyes on the prize of ending slaughter, and keep on keepin' on. Give us strength, Father. Give us compassion. Keep us from rage. Help us on our path. Lead the way...

    Good Morning All,
To Famblee still hurting I hope and pray you are finding strength. Love to all of you.

    Jonnagrey,
How greyt your words are, you turned on the tear faucet with your beautiful prayer.

I hope at this time it is OK to share a wonderful day with all of you, I will condence it.

I was invited to a wonderful , equestrian center, rescue, God given place Saturday.
As I entered Hillside Equestrian Meadows my breath was taken away. Horses roamed everywhere you looked. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I had met the wonderful owner a week before. This man rescues animals, horses with one eye, broken down sick mares with a heart on her forehead, a goat abused with jaw problems. The list goes on, the stories that were told to me, both broke my heart and touched it all at the same time. He also trains. I spent all day at this glorious peaceful place, petting and being around horses and this wonderful man, who started it all. The smell and view was wonderful.I thanked God all day for his wonderful gift to me.He reminded me of his presence.

Cupid, has a book about her rescue ( Cupid's Secret) and how Farmer Buck brought her back, taught her how to trust and understand love. She had been abused, had a bad case of skin fungus, was very sick and broken down. She is now the most beautiful mare with a beautiful heart on her forehead. She is Love.

Arrow, has a book of his own to. The difference is he was foaled at Hillside to Cupid, in a world of love and peace where all things are good. he is a character and like a soda every now and then. Sweet Boy with an Arrow on his butt. He is Joy.

Lovie, has a book all her own to. She was a gift to Farmer Buck after he lost his other dog Jack. She has a heart on the side of his sweet little body is the cutest and full of energy. The face of a small angel.

All the animals are so love and well taken care of, it is clean and neat. They have all been given a wonderful life to live. Looking at them I could see how greatful they are. The look of security.

Secretariat's great, great, granddaughter, lives at Hillside. She was in a paddock next to the Tack,Gift Shop. She is just so elegant and beautiful. Her coloring is that of her grandfather. She had a serious injury to her front leg it is incredible how well she is doing. It is the ultimate pleasure to have her here in our state.

I saw, heard and felt things that I had never felt. I hope I can always be a part of this wonderful place, the animals and kids that reside there. Hillside is a place where good things happen, all because of one man.

I pray this Congress, and the judge in Illinois are also able to hear our horses cries, and do the right thing for our horses - stop the killing.

    All,

I do NOT have any confirmation from Harry Mitchell that he has cosponsored. I talked to his aide this morning and he did not confirm this. I will check the Thomas.gov website later. I'm off to work. If anybody can confirm this, I'm ready to celebrate, but I want to be sure.

    Thanks.

It's so easy; all the contact info is furnished by your leader; and calls from a legislator's own constituents are given more consideration, as a rule. Just started skimming comments - OH JOY - Three new cosponsors in the House. Tears again - will they never end?

Don't everybody be holding your collective breath about a Cavel ruling tomorrow. There is more detail on the DB, but here's the skinny: Due to an appeal by HSUS to the Court of Appeals from the District Judge's ruling denying HSUS leave to intervene as a party defendant, the District Judge has ruled (officially announced) that he lacks jurisdiction to continue in the case before him until the Court of Appeals rules on the HSUS appeal. So get set for more litigation that takes more time - and it remains to be seen what will happen to the TRO and the "status quo." We can only watch and hope - AND KEEP CALLING DC.

Alex - enjoyed the pictures from Fair Hill, thanks for the updates.

Renee - just saw your post about the judge removing himself from the Cavel case, what does this mean? Will they still continue to operate, I hope and pray they don't.

    MORNING REPOST

I'm sure I've seen the story of Cupid and Arrow on TV - it was either on one of the rescue shows on Animal Planet, or on Animal Miracles (airs on different channels) hosted by Alan Thicke. Didn't know there were books also! Thanks for the info - do you have a website to post or a way to access the books? THANKS - CJ

We are doing a joint rescue with HR Europe. They have helped us on our rescues here, and they are asking for our help. From the DB:

"We are going to rescue 3 horses from the KB in Belgium and 2 horses in France. This will be our first "cross-border rescue" and we need help to bail them out: it's important to us and part of our CENTAURUS program which aims at rescuing horses across Europe and place them in good loving homes across Europe."

FOB - we are still $500 short on this one. Deadline is tomorrow. See thread on the DB "Help Save 5 Horses HR Europe". I know some don't like for us to come to comments with these requests - others appreciate when we do. I don't ask unless we are so close to completion. We are trying to pull the last horse - a pregnant mare. For those that are interested - please donate. Any amount is appreciated. Paypal information is on the thread.

Woo Hoo!!....3 more co-sponsors. Congratulations to the states of AZ, SC & WI.

In case you're in doubt, the State Call Groups are working.

Yes, the goings on at Cavel make me sick but we have to stay focused on the big picture......passing HR503 & S311. Without this, slaughter facilities can be built in other states and the transport to Canada & Mexico will continue. Keep calling, faxing and most important, enlisting others to join our CRUSADE.

    Hello famblee,

Thanks Alex for posting that article. I agree 100%. This site is absolute proof of what can happen when you can ignite the public. Horse racing has to move into the 21st century. I had read this article in my issue of Blood Horse. Can't you just see horses having the same kind of following as NASCAR drivers? I can. Look at what happened last year: the Breyer models of our dear Bobby sold out, the books, the t-shirts. The interest is there. Someone just needs to cultivate it. Are you listening, Magna? And everyone else? Slots are part of the puzzle, BUT NOT THE WHOLE PUZZLE.

    HORSE POWER!

Jacksons to Receive Congressional Honor at Equine Advocates Dinner

    Date Posted: June 26, 2007
    Last Updated: June 26, 2007

Roy and Gretchen Jackson, owners of 2006 Kentucky Derby...winner Barbaro, will receive a Congressional Honor from U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield as a tribute to their late colt at the Equine Advocates annual awards dinner and charity auction Aug. 2.

“We are deeply honored to have been recognized by the House of Representatives,” the Jacksons said in a joint statement. “It is all Barbaro. He started it by crossing the finish line by 6 1/2 lengths and the other by eight months of fighting to beat the odds. He has brought up many issues teaching us as well. Thank you indeed for such truly overwhelming recognition”.

The Jacksons are outspoken advocates against the practice of horse slaughter and have campaigned and lobbied for Congress to ban the practice. Whitfield, who represents Kentucky’s first district, is one of the active members of Congress working to pass the horse slaughter ban.

“The Jacksons continue to be a leading voice in the fight against horse slaughter," Whitfield said. “I believe their dedication and tireless
work ethic will help lead to the eventual end of this cruel and inhumane practice of slaughtering horses for human consumption.”

The annual benefit at Stone Bridge Farm near Schuylerville, N.Y., will also honor Madeleine and T. Boone Pickens. The couple will receive the
Equine Advocates Safe Home Equine Protection Award for their work and dedication to ending horse slaughter. Entertainer Liza Minnelli, who is currently on a world tour, will perform live in concert at the event.

“This year’s event will not only be thrilling on many levels, but it will also be a call to arms,” said Equine Advocates president Susan Wagner. "The Pickens and the Jacksons are an inspiration to us all. This event will give us the opportunity to honor them and thank them and call on all Americans to urge Congress to quickly pass H.R. 503 and S.311.”

Some limited tickets at $300 per person are still available, but must be purchased in advance. For more information, call: (518) 245-1599.

I have just called office of Rep. Harry Mitchell (to confirm our information) ... and been told by a very pleasant woman ... that ..... YES - as of yesterday ...... he IS a co-sponsor for HR 503.

This is sooo exciting ...... because Daryl and I had a most pleasant appointment with one of their aides last week during our DC trip. Not to say - they have co-sponsored because of US ...... but - it is sure a great validation today ........

I'll be back with another "DC UPDATE" post in a bit ........... with some details of this appointment with Rep. Mitchell's aide .........
and other "tidbits" that I have found valuable in our "quest" for Barbaro and his frenz !

Do you believe in the good work of the FoB?

Do you think that Tim Woolley deserves public recognition for hosting this site?

Do you want to help raise money for a great cause?

Then contribute in any amount you can to the FoB ad (it will look like this ) in the Anna House benefit program in Saratoga this summer!

No contribution is too small, and the money goes to Anna House, the childcare center of the backstretch workers at Belmont Park. Gretchen Jackson sits on the board, and she and Roy will be the honorees at this year's event.

I just wanted to say hello to everyone. My husband and I just moved (across town) and we have been without internet and tv for about a week. I've missed logging on and feel out of the loop. I did read about Invasor and Victor Molina in our paper though. Anyway, I'm still here and have a lot of catching up to do!

Good Morning, FOBs, Alex, and Barbaro,

Does anyone know what is in store for Scat Daddy? I heard he was injured in the Kentucky Derby and is being retired. I worry because I doubt that he's enough of a winner to retire to stud. I hope I'm completely wrong about that. And remembering that he was ridden by Edgar Prado, that makes me even sadder.

If anyone knows anything more, please post. Thanks.

    HELLO FOB 'FAMBLEE' ...

Time is running out on all the horses whose lives continue to be 'lost to laminitis.'

Today is June 27th ... and there are just 2 days until the 29th of the month, and so once again I am here for laminitis research and our $29 on the 29th "Let's Lick Laminitis" campaign. I needed something inspirational to motivate me to encourage all of you to please support this campaign if you haven't already done so, and if you are already a 'charter member' then please, please continue to give from your heart and soul to ending the life of laminitis for Barbaro.

And as always, I will put forth a triple crown challenge for all those who can financially see their way clear to giving more than $29 on the 29th ... $58 for the Daily Double or $87 for the Triple Crown. And here are some further 'incentives' for doing that:

As always, first and foremost, we give because of Barbaro and how cruelly, viciously and brutally laminitis defeated his young life ...

We can give to honor the great Ruffian whose life was depicted so beautifully and with such courage in a moving tribute on television earlier this month ...

We can give to celebrate the incredible victory of "Rags to Riches" in her Belmont win ... the first for a filly in 102 years .... so we KNOW that "Sistah Ruffian" was with her all the way to the Finish Line. And we can donate to 'ensure' that "Ragzy's" life will not be lost to laminitis. WE MUST LICK LAMINITIS!!

We can give to celebrate, honor and pay tribute to Street Sense and Curlin, the winners of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness ... this was one of the greatest Triple Crown Seasons I can remember in a long time ... and they all came home safely.

We can give to celebrate Roy Jackson during the month of June for Father's Day and his great love and dedication to Barbaro.

We can give to celebrate Birthday of Edgar Prado, also in June ... a milestone for Edgar ... 40 years old.

We can give in gratitude that Invasor's life of early retirement due to a fractured sesamoid will be long, healthy, fruitful and foal-bearing.

So, $29, $58, $87 or anywhere in between ... there are more than enough reasons to donate to laminitis research at UPenn. Please contribute to saving the lives of our beloved equines ... give to the Laminitis Research Fund at UPenn

    Love to All ...

Can anyone direct me to a website where I can find the Congressmen/women who where cosponsors of HR503 during the last session of Congress? i know where to find this year's cosponsors, but i want to see if there are any other Texas reps that are not signed on yet this year. Thanks.

Thank you as always, Alex, for all you do.

    Hi All,

    Thought this was very nice.

Just up the road from my home is a field,
    With two horses in it.

From a distance, each looks like every other horse.
But if you stop your car, or are walking by,
you will notice something quite amazing.
Looking into the eyes of one horse will
    disclose that he is blind.

His owner has chosen not to have him put down,
but has made a good home for him.
    This alone is amazing. !
    If nearby and listening,
you will hear the sound of a bell.
Looking around for the source of the sound,
you will see that it comes from the
    smaller horse in the field.
Attached to her halter is a small bell.
It lets her blind friend know where she is,
    so he can follow her.
As you stand and watch these two friends,
you'll see how she is always checking on him,
and that he will listen for her bell and then
slowly walk to where she is, trusting that she
will not lead him astray. When she returns to the
shelter of the barn each evening, she stops
occasionally and looks back, making sure her
friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses,
God does not throw us away just because
we are not perfect or because we have problems
or challenges. He watches over us and even brings
others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by
the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives.
Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see.
Good friends are like this .
    You don't always see them,
but you know they are always there.

    Dear Trisht:

Thanks for sharing this lovely story of faith, belief, and unconditional love.

I would love to see these horses as they take care of each other, because even the horse with the bell is getting something from this animal to animal relationship.

And special recognition to the owner... they get it.

Your comments regarding God's care is right on the money.

Re: Washington DC trip of last week

    HAY, all FsOB -

Last week's trip to DC was, for me, AMAZING ! The time was filled with appointments for 3 straight days - meeting with other FsOB ..... evaluating - learning - talking - listening - a little crying - a lot of laughing !

By day #2 - Daryl and I had become much more sophisticated in our presentation and approach.

With the exception of 2 appointments - all were very upbeat. Aides were pleasant and interested in hearing what we had to say. Many were NOT so well informed. Even though much information has been relayed verbally - or by email or fax - it was clear that many didn't know a ton about the issues. Some, however, were very well informed - and were quite alert to the objections that their particular congressperson had toward the legislation.

These were some important "revelations" to me:

    1. ASK, up front, how much time the aide has to spend with you. This can be done face-to-face OR on the phone. Some had only 15 minutes for us - clearly - we needed to know their concerns and try to address these in the time allotted.

    2. FLEXIBILITY - Yes - if time was short - it was important to be able to "shift gears" and refocus the presentation, while being professional, courteous, respectful and .......... well informed !

    3. I found it extremely beneficial and interesting to ask questions of the aide rather than simply talk ........ some questions asked:

What are the objections to the legislation ?
How do you feel about getting so many calls ? (all but one aide expressed interest and gratitude for the calls)
Do the calls make a difference ? (yes, definitely)
Does the input from the aide make a big difference in the attitude of the legislator ? (YES .... most felt that the legislators most definitely were ready to listen to aide input - backed up with good documentation)

    4. Less is More - do not overwhelm the aide with tons of information at one time. A little at a time ... provides a good opportunity to follow-up with more information at another time.

    5. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS - when talking to the animal rights aides ..... repeatedly - they will begin to remember who you are. Thus - the importance for courtesy - and respect. Send information via fax or email. Let them know it's coming. Check back to be sure it's been received. Check back in a few days to ask about questions. Keep it short. These people are incredibly busy.

    6. Let them know we ARE grass roots - this was a real important issue for many.

    7. IF you meet an aide face-to-face - be prepared with your business card. They all have cards -
it is important, I believe, for each of us to have one also. Mine is a real estate card - with a picture of me and my horse - it is recognition .... it is further proof that I am a "plain person" ... have a job and a life and am not associated with any organizations. They can keep the card - relate to it ........ and hopefully - remember me !

We met with an aide in Rep. Mitchell's office.
She was not the animal rights aide. Two appointments had been booked for the same time ! She thought we were the "other" folk - not related to HR503. Took a few minutes to figure it all out ! She was neat -
ready to listen (for 15+ minutes) ...... but ... the time with her was completely ours .......... and ..... it was a great appointment ! It required FLEXIBILITY .... talk about issues of priority to the Rep .............
be courteous ........ respectful of the schedule ........................

It was fantastic meeting the other FsOB ....... I would have liked more time getting to know you all !
We are involved in a "battle" ........... and clearly - staying power is important . Cry - laugh - have a shoulder available for both ! There are many support systems within our "family." ALL of us do something important - whether it's a call - fax - email - producing material ........ ALL are needed.

It IS my 100% privilege to be part of this amazing "House that Barbaro built !"

As John Wayne said: Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway !"

Thanks for the report and information. Proud of you and all the ones who went with you to DC.
Know it took lot's of courage.

I remember the first call I made to DC was scared to death, guess I thought the senator would answer the phone. LOL. Never called Washington in my lifetime.

That feels like years ago now..

Did not realize how nice the aides would be, and they sound so young. Have only had one that was short, but still sweet. We have all learned they do not bite.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at June 27, 2007 9:04 PM

    Yes - Debbie L.A. -
I used to call at night - and leave a message - so that I didn't have to talk to a "live person!"
That's one of the reasons last week's trip was so remarkable .... sitting eyeball to eyeball with the "right arm" to the legislators ..... and acknowledging that this IS my right to do this as a US citizen !!

I've been asking the FOBs to buy raffle tickets for a "special" autographed Barbara Livingston "Old Friends" book. I believe this book is very hard to find these days. Proceeds go to Miracle Horse Rescue with 25% going to the Laminitis Fund. Both very worthy causes. Recently, Stephanie received yet another call to pick up a severely starved & neglected horse. MaryL started a thread on the DB "Neglected/Junkyard Horse Rescued" in the Horse Rescue column. This is the 3rd horse in 3 weeks that MHR has received due to neglect & abuse. Monies donated to buy these raffle tickets will help feed all the horses at Miracle Horse Rescue and let me tell you they are overflowing right now.
Here's the link to the thread at the forum for info on the raffle. $20 bucks for a ticket or 2 for $35 for an autographed "Old Friends". I KNOW how much we've all donated and that the efforts are ongoing. Please buy a ticket or two if you can.

Hi All: I just want to let everyone know, if you don't know already, The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation also takes in many horses that are no longer wanted. One of my partners is of counsel to the Foundation and they place many unwanted horses. She takes many horses in as well.

The whole premise of slaughter is outrageous. There are so many places that horses can go when they are no longer able to race. They are used in prisons, in specialized camps, they can be trained for dressage or horsejumping competitions as well as being used in the mounted police force. They can just be pets for a loving family. There is no reason whatsoever for these horses to needlessly die. We have to stop this now.

Call you congressman, write letters do whatever you have to do. Donate to the Foundation.

Michael is doing ok. Part of getting out of the hosp. was that he was no allowed to do ANYTHING for 2-4 wks, cause he could start bleeding from his spleen again and has to wear a special bracelet, so if he is out, or alone and something happens, the ER will know right away about his condition. He is very lucky to even be alive, let alone get to keep his spleen.
Thank you for asking. He is staying with Grandma since my younger ones like to jump on him...not good!!!
I on the other hand, as has been pointed out in an email I am to driven for my own good, but I am taking it slower. But, I didn't go to bed till 8am this morning....I know, I know!!! Will go to bed early tonight...( I hope)LOL

    Love Ya'

Yes Verna, it's a beautiful poem, isn't it? It's one of my favorites, and I often include it in letters that I write to politicians, friends and family regarding horse slaughter. The words are so powerful and eloquently state the very reasons why the slaughtering of these magnificent animals is so terribly immoral. One should not be able to read these words without feeling shame for the indignity and brutality that continues to be inflicted upon our horses...our inheritance.

    Sandie,
Sadly an evil heart does not care one way or the other, but I would think anyone with any amount of goodness in them, would have to be moved by it.
I tried that too, but was told not to go with the emotional side of HS, but to hit on the hard hitting nasty side of HS, such as laws broken and such. But it is still beautiful, even if some are to blind to "FEEL" the word.
Have a great night, storms headed in here.
    Love,
    Verna

Last summer we planned an event for a very special member of Barbaro's team. We would like to repeat that event. Please see the thread on the DB under "Barbaro". You will know it when you see it. :)
If you are in personal contact with folks who were not here last summer, please fill them in.

DOG INJURIES AT HINSDALE PARK HIT ALL TIME HIGH

    HINSDALE, N.H., June 21, 2007 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ --

According to state records, greyhound injuries increased to a record level at Hinsdale Greyhound Park during the first four months of 2007, nearly tripling the total from the same time period a year ago.

"These terrible injuries are occurring every day at Hinsdale Greyhound Park," said GREY2K USA Board Member Michael Trombley. "During the first four months of the year, more than a dog a day was injured."

In total, 141 dogs were injured between January 1 and April 30, according to state records provided by the New Hampshire Pari-Mutuel Commission. This represents a 276% increase over a year ago, when 51 dogs were hurt during the first four months of the year at the track. This increase was first reported in this morning's edition of the Brattleboro Reformer.

Reported injuries include dogs that suffered multiple broken bones, and fractures so severe there were "bones protruding from skin." So far, eight dogs have been euthanized at the track due to serious injury.

Earlier this year, the State House of Representatives defeated a proposal to phase out dog racing by 2009. The proposal had been endorsed by dozens of lawmakers, community leaders and local animal shelters.

"We have not given up in our effort to end this cruelty," said Trombley. "Dogs play an important role in our lives, and deserve to be protected from individuals and industries that would do them harm."

GREY2K USA is a national, non-profit greyhound protection organization with more than 20,000 supporters in all fifty states. For more information, contact Michael Trombley at 603-456-3403.

Mind you, greys will KEEP GOING, as did Ruffian and Go for Wand after they're running on bone. Their drive to run and catch their prize is so powerful, so overwhelming. No jockeys: just pure, undiluted heart and will.

Did we see any discussion of safer, better track surfaces in this article? Hell, no.

And people in the dog racing INDUSTRY wonder why greyhound racing is on the decline--just as as the TB business...Hinsdale is known as one of the worst tracks in the country...and is the first track I visited when I was a weepy fledgling at rescue in 1991...all very young dogs, or older dogs in the end of their careers. All pretty much doomed. Not neatly, not cleanly, not humanely.

It lit a fire in my belly that put me on the rescue, adoption and education track I've been on since then...in fact, getting two rescues from a belly-up breeding farm in KS on Sunday.

It never stops--like horse rescue--I read the DB everyday, and help when/where I can...but it's never enough--that's how I feel. I have to say no to GHs every week. I wish we have all of Joe's foster families at TB Friends...all GH groups need foster families, FYI>

I was telling Angela the other day that watching her video on YouTube talking about what goes on at Cavel, her coffee in hand, in full possession of her emotions, just telling it like it is, well, that's me with greyhound rescue--today. Now, I can talk about all of it, feel it, see it...and somehow manage to stay in control. After 16 years...there is a--not immunity--but something that just makes you able to talk and tell and educate people without losing it yourself. You'd never be effective otherwise, would you?

So there's Angela. And here's me. Not being able to get the sound of the Cavel foals out of my head. I listened to Spirit whinnying for his mom at MHR when they were first separated into the big round pen. Little Angel looking at him like he'd lost his little blond head....and so the sound of that whinny--that desperate, scared little I WANT MY MOMMA sound got into my brain and now I can hear the foals at Cavel...well, I don't need to go any further than that. I have told all the aides to whom I have spoken about the truckloads of foals.
Let them chew on that for their lunch.

I aspire to be as calm and contained and as circumspect and effective as Angela someday. She is my Warrior Amazon Horse Spirit. (Just like my friend Annie Weinert in Buffalo was my Greyhound Goddess. She knew I'd get to the other side...she even gave us seed money to begin greyhounds of central ny, inc.) People like Annie and Angela: they fire revolutions.

Keep calling. I heard today from many aides that they ARE HEARING FROM US. We can't stop now. We can't slow down. I see Barbaro leaping in his round, grassy, beautiful Fair Hill ex-pen everytime I boot up, and I think to him in my head; I PROMISE>I AM HERE> I WILL MAKE THIS HAPPEN> And on we go. It's all I can do.

I too once was sure I would lay my hand on that silken neck, and look into those wonderful eyes myself one day. I was so SURE that he would live.

In the Ruffian movie by ESPN, they have the ECU of the horse's eye as she slips into unconsciousness when they put her down...and that's how all my animals enter Heaven. With me the last thing imprinted on their retina. Me, and that look of love that they have know all their life with me, whether that life has been 12 years or 2 years...
or even less...it moved me so much to see this scene. We always use a hind leg vein, and I can hold them in my arms and look into their dear faces...asking God to keep them until we can be reunited again...and what a pack we will be.

So peaceful night to you all, my dears. Be good to each other, before you type and SEND, think of all who enter this website and wonder how the Jackson's would like it to be seen and said.

They shared their Barbaro with us--down to some of the last precious details--for almost 9 months. We owe this kind behavior and tolerance of each other to them and to--in the end--Barbaro.

I will--WILL--lay my hand on his neck one day. How busy he will be greeting all his admirers and frens and famblee....I can't wait.

Hiya, FsOB! It was so great reading about Sherry's visit to DC. The news about Cavel's decision in Federal Court being delayed is awful, however. Please, do whatever you can to advocate for HR 503 and S 311. And I implore any of you willing to do so to post the name and mailing address of your local daily newspaper here and I'll send a letter to the editor asking folks to boycott Belgium. I have already sent letters to Hartford, CT; Long Island, NY; Syracuse, NY; York, PA; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; Albuquerque, NM; Lexington, KY; five cities in IL; two cities in NC; and I am willing to send more! This carnage is so unbelievably awful. Is everything for sale in this country?
What great news that Congressman Ed Whitfield (KY, yeah!)
has nominated the Jacksons for a Congressional Honour. Peace, RMH

    #### To CH: Thanks for the news from Lillian Petroff. I was so charmed by her posting the first time that I found this site a year ago.
To Verna1: Please take good care of yourself as you help Michael in his recovery.
To Renee: Your news of the work at Hillside is balm to my soul tonight.
To Laurie H.: It is so cool to read that Bart has taken up word processing!
To Patty in Dallas: Google on the U.S. Congress-> U.S. House->Find a bill->HR 503->Hit for House & Senate->HR 503.iH->Bill Summary of status->cosponsors. Hope this helps! I think there were 173 names listed for HR 503. Peace, RMH ####

WOW: thank you sherry! my mother gave me words to love when i was a wee thing. i in turn read to my niece when she came to my sister adopted at 2.5 days old!!Now there's a miracle for you. I read to her all the time--so did her parents--and you should see her writing...she blows me away, now my "little" 24-year old. My words are all i have sometimes...the frustration with this horse slaughter is so overwhelming some days...
    *************
Robyn: yes, i think everything in america IS for sale. It is dismal. We have to be shoulder-to-shoulder on this. We will get this done. We're driven by the story of a horse, and as Jane Smiley (Horse Heaven) says, all horse stories are love stories.

    God bless the rescuers.

Thank you, CJ, for being there, so PRESENT>

thank you, my famblee. For your prayers for Jessie. Her sutures come out tomorrow. How can it have been two weeks?! She is well....
    *********
And lastly, at least for this Wednesday night, thank you Tim and most of all Alex. For all you do. All, all, and then for more.

good night all, sweet dreams, that's a big, sweet moon out there tonight, wreathed by fireflies, and a cooling June night. Ah, if only I was in love...

Ugh, just getting home. Still no site access during the day; hopefully that will change...no time to catch up now.

Alex, thank you, and thanks to Mrs. Jackson, for the update on Man in Havana. I'm disappointed he won't race, but I'm happy that he has owners who care about him, and who will make a good decision for his future. This is one young horse whom we know will have a safe future despite not prevailing on the track. Please keep us updated!

Man in Havana, enjoy your layoff. I'm sure you'll have a new job very soon, so roll around in the sun now while you can.
