Barbaro Updates: 320

updates are now here.

Update 2111: Today's big race was run in Ireland, with Aidan O'Brien taking 1-2-3: FORTUNE FAVOURS O'BRIEN'S SOLDIER. Sue McMullen had this to report:

Aiden O'Brien's Soldier of Fortune today trounced his rivals in the Budweiser Irish Derby, finishing nine lengths ahead of Alexander of Hales and the well fancied Eagle Mountain. Clearly relishing the soft ground, the good looking son of Galileo looked in a different class as he sped away from the field giving jockey Seamus Heffernan his first big victory. Kieran Fallon reported Eagle Mountain disliked the ground and we didn't see the best of him, but the winner has improved at home since Epsom and looks to be a very exciting individual. No decision has been made about his next appearance as Ballydoyle have both Dylan Thomas and Scorpion to consider for the King George, but if Soldier of Fortune does head to Ascot on 28 July he might encounter Authorized and what a race we have in prospect. The weather might prove the clincher in the decision making process as the UK has experienced heavy rainfall throughout June and if July proves as wet, there is likely to be cut in the ground at Ascot. Two classy Derby winners taking on some heavyweight older horses. A middle distance clash of generations, The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes is one of the most exciting races in the UK calandar and never fails to live up to expectations.

Update 2110: A lovely morning at Fair Hill. None to ride, but I went in to see Real Lace after her race yesterday. She looked fine, Tim said she ate up well last night, and likely just did not get the trip (a mile and an eighth may have been a little too far).

A great article that quotes many familiar names: Companions, 'not dinner'

Update 2109: Racing media coverage of the key races on saturday:

Hollywood Gold Cup:
Lava Man by nose in Gold Cup
Move Over 'Diver, Make Room for Lava Man
Lava Man lands historic Hollywood Gold Cup victory

The Suburban:
Political Force scores upset for Jerkens
Political Force Shows Clout in Suburban
Political Force gives Jerkens fourth Suburban win

The American Cap:
Out of Control outduels The Tin Man
Frankel Takes 'Control' to American Handicap Upset
Out of Control stuns The Tin Man in American Invitational

Update 2108: Wow, what can you say about Lava Man, he refused to get beat. A real performance to hold on to win. The Tin Man lost nothing in defeat either, giving up 10 pounds and only coming up slightly short in a great stretch dual. Some great racing from California, both grass and synthetic!

Update 2107: Real Lace set the early fractions in her first race on the turf. She faded towards the end, and perhaps the race was a little too far for her (a mile and an eighth). I just spoke to Tim and she cooled out well and they are nearly home.

Delightful Kiss proved last night that his win in the Ohio Derby was no fluke with his second Derby win: Delightful Kiss Smacks Iowa Derby Rivals.

Update 2106: A pleasant morning at Fair Hill this morning. I had two to ride. First out was Kitty, she went across the fields on her own. This was our first solo trip but all was fine. She ducked to the right a couple of times when she saw some things she was not used to seeing. A hawk, flying low in front of us, was one of those things. My second set was Who's Happy. Her first day out since becoming a stakes winner. She went to the dirt track to jog two miles and she went nicely. She is the first stakes winner I have ridden for a loooong time!

Tim was busy getting ready to leave form Monmouth. Real Lace is running in the fourth race.

Update 2105: Jeannine Edwards sent this e-mail regarding tonight's show on ESPN2 (7 - 8 pm Eastern):

My planned trip to NY Thursday morning to do a taped shoot with Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez revisiting the Belmont Stakes, and an interview with Kiaran McLaughlin on Invasor's retirement, did not materialize. It was a mess. Thunderstorms that passed through Wed night botched up travel all over the eastern part of the country, hence flights were cancelled or diverted and Philly airport was chaotic. Fortunately, my 8:00am flight to LaGuardia took off only 1/2 hour late, but unfortunately, we had a malfunctioning landing gear which forced us back to Philly after 10 minutes of flying. Since there were no other seats to be had on ANY flights due to the weather-related chaos, we were out of luck. Long story short, I never made it to NY and instead went straight to Los Angeles, after spending about 8 hours in the airport!! The camera crew was at Belmont already so they were able to get the interviews, but it still fouled up what we wanted to do with Pletcher. Oh well.

This morning we went out and hit the barns here at Hollywood Park and saw nearly everyone in the Hollywood Gold Cup. Lava Man looks good.... as good as I've ever seen him. He doesn't seem to have lost any weight or bloom since his trip to Dubai and back. His barn is hoping for a big effort tomorrow, a history-making three-peat in the Gold Cup. Trainer Doug O'Neill is on vacation in Ireland, and coincidentally, we have a crew in Ireland for the Irish Derby on Sunday, so we will have a live hook-up via satellite and talk to Doug as he watches our show in an Irish pub. How cool is that! We'll have a couple of live hits with him and get the latest info on Lava Man right before the race.

Molengao is his biggest threat. After some sore ankles sent him to the DL last summer, trainer Paulo Lobo started training him on the Cushion Track here at Hollywood, and he says Molengao is now a much happier horse. He's coming up the race in fine form, had a 2 month respite (by design) since his last start (a win in the Mervyn LeRoy) and Lobo said "he's ready for a big performance, I'm very confident."

John Shireffs, of Tiago and Giacomo fame, told us A.P. Excellent is a one-dimensional kind of runner.... he needs the lead. So he will be dictating how the Gold Cup is run. Shireffs told us he tried working him behind horses in a breeze, and A.P. Excellent had what Shireffs called "zero tolerance" for it. He said at the 1/8 pole when the rider asked him to go, he responded with "I don't think so." It was funny. The colt is gorgeous, Shireffs took him outside for us and showed him off. Just a beautiful, show-quality horse, very flashy too. So look for A.P. Excellent to be carving out the early fractions, and Shireffs said realistically, he'd like to see him go the first half mile in around :47 seconds.

Wilko's camp is hoping for a sudden epiphany tomorrow. Craig Dollase is putting blinkers on for only the second time in Wilko's 28-race career. Dollase told us he "thinks about it all the time" the fact that Wilko hasn't been able to win since his BC Juvenile triumph in 2004 (17 races ago). He said it's been extremely frustrating. He said "we've tried everything, and we seem to always get the same kind of race out of him.... not a disgrace, but not a win either." Wilko is a 5-year-old now, so you have to wonder how long they will keep him in training.

We are also showing the Suburban and American Handicaps on tape, probably just stretch runs unfortunately!!! We had to make time for Doug O'Neill in Ireland.

We have a very full show.... interviews with Hollywood track president Jack Liebau, Molengao's trainer Paulo Lobo, apprentice jockey sensation Joe Talamo, Lava Man's owners Steve Kenly and Jason Wood, and a few others. We'll have reports on Invasor's retirement (including the sound from Kiaran McLaughlin shot yesterday morning) and Todd Pletcher recaps the Belmont for us.

Jerry Bailey and I are flying back to the East Coast on the redeye Sat night, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed there are no thunderstorms in the area and we actually end up getting home!!

Good Morning to All.

Some sad news today. Astra, who ran on the turf, was PTS at age 11 due to colic.

Rest in peace, Astra, and may light perpetual shine upon you. How very sad - she was a new mama - but it sounds like everything possible was done for her, including using a hyperbaric chamber. COLIC - wretched disease...our poor fragile horses!

Barbaro, the heavenly herd, and I enjoyed the Hamden fireworks display. I hope our tiny angel furkids like Felix and Jules weren't frightened...maybe they were hiding under Uncle Barbaro's wings!

Hi, FOB's!

###
Am saddened to read about Astra. Prayers to her and her connections.

###
Alex if I don't have to be at the powwow tomorrow, I may come down to Fair Hill...if not tomorrow, I will try to get there on the 8th. Just want to be around the horses before the workshops start.

###
I have an illustrator for "Cassidy". I saw her portfolio and fell in love with her style - so did Joanna - I feel she will portray Windy, Stormy and Illusion as the beautiful souls they are. I'm going to steer her here so she can get an idea of what the FOB's do.

###
Pamie, loved the video. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face today.

Take care everybody.

ACROSS THE BOARD by Steve Davidowitz
for TrackMaster - June, 2007
The following column represents the private views and opinions of author-handicapper Steve Davidowitz and are not necessarily those of AXCIS/TrackMaster or any of it's management or personnel. Each month, Mr. Davidowitz has the freedom to express his point of view in this forum and encourages comments from readers directed to him at davidwtz@aol.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are more than two years into American racing’s experiments with artificial racing surfaces and it is impossible to make a single coherent statement about them.
From a handicapping perspective the changes in form have been so dramatic that many experienced players feel lost or ready to curse the gods of the game while they toss their past performances to the wind.

From a safety standpoint, which was the principal reason to deploy artificial surfaces, breakdowns have in fact dropped, but not without unforeseen problems that threaten its ultimate purpose. Chief among these problems have been the hit or miss measures needed to keep the artificial surfaces uniform during heavy usage through a wide range of climates.

For instance, at Turfway Park in Kentucky this winter, a cold snap changed the generally loose composition of the artificial mixture into dangerously heavy clods, which became missiles aimed at jockeys and horses in competition, thus forcing Turfway to make serious adjustments on the fly.

Woodbine in Canada also had problems with its artificial track that related to its cold weather.

Meanwhile, Hollywood Park, which is conducting its spring-summer meet in a much warmer clime, is set to add wax to the top layer of the ‘Cushion Track’ surface to replenish the depletion of that important part of the synthetic mixture.

How much wax? No one is quite sure, or willing to say, which tells you all you need to know about the delicate, tricky nature of America’s modern racetrack experiment.

Don’t be fooled. This is no small matter.

The need to replenish wax is an important development in artificial track maintenance as it relates to some disturbing trends and clues that have escaped analysis in the mainstream media. Specifically, many trainers at Hollywood suddenly are seeking X-rays for possible injures sustained by their horses during workouts and/or races.

One prominent California based trainer, who did not wish to be identified for fear of incurring difficulties with management said, he is “three days deep on the waiting list” to get a horse-X rayed. “It wasn’t like that last fall,” he added.

Clocker Bruno DeJulio, who has been watching horses race and train on the So Cal circuit for several years, also reports noticeable differences in the track that hint at why Hollywood is tinkering with it’s ‘Cushion Track’ surface.

DeJulio pointed out that the texture of Hollywood Park has changed from a visual standpoint since the fall meet. No longer is it light in color as it was in the fall of 2006, when Hollywood’s first artificial meet was greeted with unilateral praise from dozens of jockeys and trainers.

“Last year,” DeJulio said, “the track was excellent and you saw very few horses short striding, bobbling, or simply moving like a stiff horse. The track didn't break out from underneath them and it was a very sound surface.

“More recently,” DeJulio continued, “horses have been striding short, and galloping stiff, or bobbling, or taking funny steps down the lane when the ground seems to be breaking out from under them. The track now is playing looser---much like the way the old Del Mar dirt surface.”

All this is not to suggest that California should abandon the artificial track experiment. Far from it. Indeed, California should be applauded for introducing artificial track racing at Del Mar next month and Santa Anita in the fall. While each track will provide more information and will no doubt present more problems to be dealt with, both Del Mar and Santa Anita were long overdue for major overhauls. Both had relatively poor dirt racing surfaces that were difficult to maintain and played havoc with form from one day to the next.

Kentucky also should be commended for taking the experiment forward, even though we saw many aberrantly run races during the two Polytrack Keeneland meets that totally confused horseplayers. At the core of the experiment is the need to bring down the breakdown rate of the animals we love to watch and bet on.

The mounting evidence that precipitated the experiment is frightening to contemplate and rarely spelled out in a way that will inspire people to work harder for solutions.

Listen to trainer Michael Dickinson’s remarks at Horseplayer’s Expo in March, 2007: In addition to his outstanding training achievements, Dickinson helped develop the artificial Tapeta track at his Maryland base:

“The general public doesn’t know it, but we have 68 jockeys (69 with Andrew Lakeman now included ), who have permanent, paraplegic injuries suffered on the racetrack. It is not pleasant for me to also report that we annually average two fatal horse break downs every day, or 750 each year. . .Artificial tracks are going to be an important component in bringing those numbers down,” Dickinson said more than once.

In my view, nothing has changed to alter the urgency of Dickinson’s remarks and the implication of his terribly frank statistics.

Hopefully, the tracks and racing commissions that have chosen to act quickly to address racing surface-safety issues realize they may be making some mistakes along the way. They surely should realize the need to be up front about these issues just as they must limit the invasiveness of excessive track maintenance, which can undo all their good intentions.

As I also see it, the sharpest horseplayers will figure out the way races are being run and will make significant profits by being the first on their blocks to get it right at the artificial track of their choice. I also see the absolute need on the part of all the tracks involved in this experiment to be very careful with the tinkering and the changes they make on a day to day basis.

The horses we love to bet on deserve nothing less than a safe playing field that is kept safe, just as horseplayers deserve a level playing field that is kept that way, with changes made only in the interest of safety not merely to tinker, or to alter the handicapping equation.

BEST OF LUCK AND GOOD HANDICAPPING

//STEVE DAVIDOWITZ

I hope some of you saw the fantastic win by Delightful Kiss in the Iowa Derby last night - thanks for the $12.80, and for the excitement! You are one gorgeous horse, and I hope you came out of your race in good form!

I rarely wager (only when I get "hunchey") but yesterday someone mentioned Butterfly Belle...Russell Baze was riding her when he broke the record....hmmmm, she raced last night at Hollywood and WON big time...I should have bet her to win instead of place because she paid $45.50 for the win! Someone on this board who desperately needs our help will be this week's beneficiary of my "hunchiness."

GO Lava Man!

Be safe, everyone putting hoof to track today.

Thanks for the Steve D. article. I certainly agree with his bottom line. But I wonder, did people assume the synthetic tracks would be maintenance-free? Is anything maintenance-free?

Off topic, but amusing and who doesn't like to laugh on a Saturday morning?

This is in Washington County, Missouri.

"Steer's Owner Ticketed For Excessive Mooing"

You can accuse Wally the steer of a lot of things.

His kisses are a little sloppy and his nudges might be a little too much.

But these days Wally's crazy ways are going beyond the pasture because Wally is apparently a nuisance. Why? Because Wally, shockingly, is mooing, and, apparently, he's mooing loudly.

"I'm being charged with a criminal complaint," Wally's owner Karyl Hylle said.

That's right. The Washington County Sheriff's Department cited Hylle, who owns the 33 acre farm where Wally resides, with a misdemeanor. The ticket specifically cites her for ongoing nuisance cow mooing.

"I honestly am speechless," Hylle said.

It seems Hylle's next door neighbor has called authorities more than 20 times claiming Wally is a moo-maniac. But in the more than an hour we were on the farm, we couldn't get Wally to make a peep.

"I mean he does moo, he's a cow, but it's rare and it's few and far between," Hylle said.

Karyl says Wally lets out a moo about twice a day. Hardly enough, she thinks, to warrant 21 complaints that have been filed with Washington County by the neighbor.

It's important to note too that Karyl's land is a zoned farm. She could have 50 head of cattle if she wanted to.

The beef on the complaints is the mooing, but when officers showed up to the farm, the complaint says the cow didn't moo for them either.

So, after one court appearance, Karyl faces a $1,000 fine and or 90 days in jail for Wally daring to do what all steer have done before. Moo.

The Hugo city attorney says in his 15 years of prosecuting for the city he has never seen a case like this. He says the next step is to find out if this really is an enforceable citation. He says his hunch is that it isn't.

Dear Barbaro

5 months - is that really possible? Somehow it does not feel real. I know our work was never in the physical you and I - only the one time was I with you in the physical. So you ask why do I cry....nothing has changed for us - for you are still with me. But I do cry Barbaro - I cry for all of us, and what we miss because you are not here. I miss your beautiful face and your grace. I know you probably grow tired of it -"get over the grief - we have much to do". And while that is true, and we are doing much, still we do cry for you. Most never knew you in the physical either -and yet Barbaro we knew you better than others didn't we? For each one of us know your spirit. You called us all those many months ago, and we answered you. You chose each one of us. So many came here - we did not know why - only that we could not leave this place. And still we stay - we stay for you Magnificent Steed! We know and feel your spirit - and we hear your call.... And so we go on - for you dear Barbaro. God bless us on our way.

I love you forever horse.

Molina was gutsy and humble asking forgiveness...and so if anyone is asking, I forgive his action. He does need to figure out what made him go over the top...too many mounts? Who knows. He is human. And god bless him, isn't it amazing that he came to TWR to make his apology.
####
Getting two new greyhounds from Kansas thanks to our wonderful GH volunteers across the country. Kansas to upstate NY. Pretty amazing...we divide the routes up into doable chunks--10-2 hour "legs", and off we go. We call this the GUR, the Greyhound Underground Railroad. The Horde will be all riled up for about 15 minutes and then all will settle down...it is truly astonishing . These dogs can manage anything. And have done, repeatedly.
#### Welcome to Steve B: you sure found your way to the right spot. As someone already mentioned, we have great works in progress, and you can choose what to become involved with. The Friends of Barbaro, and the House that Barbaro Built--or the House of Barbaro--whatever you call it...is an astonishing assembly of people of all walks of life, all ages, all parts of the country.
You will feel "home" here, I am sure...don't forget to go to the pull down menu on the left and
go into the TWR: Discuss and Chat. You'll hear this called The Forum, as it was for almost a year. You'll also want to visit the WIKI pages that Alex Brown has been working on for months...and get to know the people, the rescue groups, all of it.We're a mighty force to be reckoned with--as it turns out. And we're kinda liking that...
####
For the shy callers: use the weekend to get your messages in to your senators and representatives...you'll probably find lots of mailboxes full, but try anyway. It'll make you ready for the real stuff on Monday. Becasue the closing of Cavel is--IMHO temporary. We've been there too many times before. We MUST get HR503 or S311 into LAW before this 110th Congress adjourns on or around October 26....yikes. So, onward, you
wild men and women. We can do this. The Jacksons are trusting us. And doing it in Barbaro's name: well, that makes it easy as pie.
####
Wonderful Saturday to all... Alex, thank you for being our guide through all these months.

Real Lace - aka Lacie-girl - run with the wind and come home safely. If I can get there tomorrow morning, I will. You have a place in my little human heart forever.

###
Mary S, I still cry as well - at the strangest times. We were all called to this place to do what needed to be done to protect these amazing animals...once we know they are (immediately) safe, we can go about ensuring that permanent safety. Its OK to cry for these are tears of love - as Gandalf says in "Lord of the Rings" - "I will not say do not weep for not all tears are an evil."

###
One of the horses at the ranch had his pic in yesterday's Reading paper (I got honorable mention as an upcoming author)...and he looks beautiful. So wise, so deep. Its the Windy who I love so much that came thru in the photo. I'll give hime extra carrots today once I get to the powwow.

Gotta go...powwow time

Barbaro helped Finger Lakes....

Finger Lakes sets pace to help retired racehorses

Kevin Oklobzija
Staff writer

(June 30, 2007) — FARMINGTON — At first glance, there was little to indicate that this Friday morning gathering was actually a glorious occasion for the thoroughbred racing industry.

The smile of track veterinarian Margaret Ohlinger told the real story, however.

What began maybe six years ago as a passionate campaign by Ohlinger and a few concerned horse lovers has blossomed into a revolutionary program to save retired thoroughbreds.

Horsemen and management at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack have formed a partnership to find homes for horses that are no longer capable of earning money in racing.

"As strongly as I feel about the National Center for Exploited and Missing Children, I feel these babies are sometimes exploited, too," said Wanda Polisseni, owner of Purple Haze Stables and a major contributor to the program.

"We don't want to send these horses out to stand in a pasture, we don't want to send them to the glue factory. They deserve another chance."

There are other horse retirement organizations in the country, but the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program (www.fingerlakestap.org) is the industry's first to be based on track property.

Thanks to a $150,000 donation by Polisseni and a $60,000 state grant secured by state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, a 10,000-square-foot, 16-stall equine center will be built over the next 10 weeks.

"I pinch myself all the time when I think about it," Ohlinger said after Friday's ceremonial groundbreaking. "I'm dumbfounded that we've been so successful so fast."

Indeed, just six years ago, Ohlinger and trainers such as Phyllis Shetron were volunteering to find homes for unwanted horses from the track.

Then in the fall of 2004, the horsemen and track management joined forces to form the FLTAP. They've held fundraisers and each group donates $1 for every horse that runs in a race during the season.

"This will be the model that other racetracks will follow in the future," said David Brown, president of the Finger Lakes' Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.

Since the group was formed, nearly 200 horses have been adopted. Now, with an adoption center prominently located on track property, more can be saved. The goal is to find homes for 125 more in the next year.

"I look at it as a Lollypop Farm for horses," said track president and general manager Chris Riegle.

The plight of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro actually helped fuel the efforts of the FLTAP. The fate of horses that break down on the track became news, and horse lovers stepped forward.

"That was really the wind beneath our wings," Ohlinger said. "The problem was unrecognized before. But with the help of a bad thing (Barbaro's breakdown), more people became involved."

The program's slogan is "Giving horses a second chance to be winners." Adopted horses have found new careers in trail riding, dressage, as therapeutic riding horses, and even in mounted police patrols.

Adoption costs range from $200 to $1,000, depending on the age and condition of the horse. The average cost is $500, Ohlinger said. There is a screening process for all persons wishing to adopt.

The Purple Haze Center is scheduled to be completed in mid-September. Proposed hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday

Thanks to Alex for bringing Jeanine into our lives. She came at the worst of times...and she stayed. And now, she enlightens--and lightens--us with her news of the racing world, whether from Dubai or Belmont. She is loyal, and true and kind, qualities i search for in the human race, and outside of our Famblee, there isn't much of it around....

I think she is amazing...what a gypsy life she leads. And her devotion to the House of Barbaro is amazing. Think of all the other things she could be doing...she is one of my main resources in learning and listening about racehorses and the people who work with them, love them, and seek to advance the safety of racing in all ways.

So, thanks again, Alex. I keep forgetting to mention this, and with her post this morning, and my being in a cleaning frenzy for the arrival of the two new GH, this was the PERFECT diversion..and the perfect time to say THANK YOU ALEX, THANK YOU JEANINE.

I agree with the synthetic race track. The numbers are too high for the horses and the jockeys getting hurt. I hope the new racing turf would help lessen the injuries. Maybe the tracks will change......

Barbaro, I love you and hope you are doing well in Heaven. I miss you so much! I think about you all the time. I love, love, love you!!!!

Hay All,

BUTTERLY BELLE, the horse that Russel Baze was riding for his Record Breaking Win, last year, won her race, yesterday. It seems, that she had been being "raced down" a bit, since her Baze race, and I have been watching her. She has been consistent, and seems to have a lot of heart.

As a result of yesterday's race, she has been claimed by a new owner, Class Racing Stable, and will be in the care of new trainer, Jeff Mullins.

Way To Go, BUTTERFLY BELLE!

You deserve applause, honor, and ultimately a sweet safe pasture...someday. For now, stay safe, and enjoy your flights.

You are loved.

Way to go Finger Lakes and God bless your efforts.

## Vicki and Renee, concerning my posts yesterday about the Tribune, I was just venting here to my famblee about how hard it was to find, etc, and I didn't write anything negative to them in my post there.
I didn't mean to imply that I wanted anyone to diss the Tribune, I just wanted to get facts and publicity for our fight against HS into the media. I thought that the more responses a newspaper gets, the more interest they see in the public,
the more attention they will pay to the issue.
I am glad to know what you ( Vicki) stated about the Tribune being amenable to printing HS issues since it is not a local paper to me.Of course, dotcom makes it available to everybody!
Sorry if I wrote my post badly and caused anyone to write a negative comment to the Tribune. I will not vent so publicly in the future, or will try to
make what I mean to say clearer. Thanks, BobbieB.

After all the sturm und drang last week waiting for Cavel to close - we darned well sure need all the good laughs we can get. (Isn't it a full moon, too???)

This post by legal eagle Susan E made me LOL - but had to add - this is a clear case of an alleged MOOING VIOLATION . . .

REPOST:

Just attempted to post this as a Comment to Pam's great online opinion piece; don't know if it will go up or not. Here's my contribution:

I couldn't have said it better! Yeah and Amen. As a lifelong horse owner, I know the difference between humane euthanasia with vet and owner present in the horse's familiar surroundings, and what goes on, on the way to and at the slaughterhouse. Please everyone - contact your legislators and ask them to support AND COSPONSOR HR 503 and S 311. Now that there are NO horse slaughterhouses for human consumption operating within the borders of the United States, the bloody business still goes on, but goes on in Canada and Mexico. The federal legislation (HR 503 / S 311) illegalizes (among other things) export for slaughter purposes. WE NEED THE FEDERAL LAW NOW MORE THAN EVER. It's time already. Darn it. C. Corinthian's run reminds me of Discreet Cat's in the Dubai World Cup earlier this year: extremely uncharacteristic, and I suspect that he's off in some way--not necessarily unsound, but maybe sick, or something like that, which turned out to be the case with Discreet Cat, according to the reports.

Having watched him so impressively run the Met Mile a month ago, I was disappointed, and like the rest of you, hope that whatever is troubling him isn't serious.

I have been thinking all day about the Finger Lakes TB Adoption article I posted and how Barbaro helped them get the project off the ground.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were "Barbaro Centers" at various race tracks across the country? The center would be run by a horse rescue that would work with OTTB's to get them adopted into loving homes. The Barbaro Center at Delaware Park or somewhere could house the Barbaro museum. In fact each center could have some of his things.

Barbaro has brought about an awareness of equine health and wellbeing. We have linked up with horse shelters and have become politically aware. I believe they got a grant from the state to build the stable.

I have no idea how to get this done, however we may have the people and the links right here on this board to make this happen. It is just a thought.

The little one is still under the porch...and the one I had just missed seeing born..is w/mom has nursed several times....mom is still expelling after birth...sorry for those of you w/no desire for THIS much info....but daughter and I are concerned for the wee-one under porch..hasn't nursed yet for us to see...is it normal for Mom to leave the other one alone for so long??? Anyone out there know this??? Seems healthy...wobbly, but large and healthy...we just feel badly 'cause maybe it too, is HUNGRY??? But who knows....that one could have been born several hours ago....I don't know...

Thanks for seeing my post Jan....:)

Hay, ALL,

I just found out that the great filly, OCTAVE has won the Mother Goose Stakes.

I am very happy for her. She has too long been in the shadow of other great fillies...always quick and game, but in 2nd place. Perhaps her time is finally arrived. I hope so. She is wonderful.

Anyone else agree?

I have been watching her for quite awhile, now. She was second to DREAMING OF ANNA, last year, in the Breeders Cup Juvenile fillies race, and second to RAGGS TO RICHES in the Kentucky Oaks.

SHE's fast, has great heart, and is a real looker. Her daddy is the exceptionally beautiful UNBRIDLEDS SONG. She is of the MR PROSPECTOR LINE.

(sigh) I had always fancied her as a good match for our Dear BARBARO.

Anyhow, GOOD JOB, OCTAVE!

One of your adoring FANS, O

Posted by: Otherlyn at July 1, 2007 1:42 AM

OTHERLYN - she is indeed a beauty! Didn't realize she's of the Unbridled line...I knew one of Unbridled's sons, he was a police horse NOT a successful race horse, and he was also a looker!

Hiya, FsOB! What a gorgeous day it was here on the banks of the Thames. Our Sweet Prince would've loved grazing in a sunny meadow on such a grand day. And three new little creatures showed up this AM in what we refer to as our Japanese garden outside the great room. They are either gophers or groundhogs (I am unsure of the difference). But they are adorable and were eating some of the sunflower seeds and other seeds for the birds and squirrels, simulatneously as the birds were eating. Nikita was going wild, running from one part of the room to other to watch the little ones. They seemed to adore seeing her and would just stand on the deck outside the door and look up at Kita. Peace, RMH

A few weeks ago in the town I live in a man took a 8 week old dachund puppy and beat him to death with his fists and throwingg him against a brick wall because he had an accident in the house. I was very pleased to see the man will get a 2 year prison sentence. The man should be thankful I wasnt the judge as he would have received a MUCH longer sentence. A person who abuses animals should get a very stiff sentence. The animals are so fragile and for the life of me I dont understand why the man even had the puppy.

Barbaro you are missed

Posted by: Dave at July 1, 2007 5:24 AM

###Good morning everyone. (It's 3:39 a.m. here in the Mojave Desert--I cannot sleep). Thank you Alex and Tim for all you do for us and for the animals through this site. I love reading everyone's updates and news about the horses and races.

###Sandra, about the man and the puppy--had I been the judge he would not have left the courtroom walking on his own.

Snuffy Smith, the puppy I got a few weeks ago, is a Dorgie--a Corgi-Dachshund cross--and he is the smartest little guy. He isn't potty trained yet, but when I ask him if he has to "go outside to go potty," he sits down. (His version of "No," I guess). It takes time to train ANY animal to do almost ANYTHING (except cats--they come box trained, pretty much, and aren't interested in learning anything else ;o) At any rate, I am so glad I am one of those who "GETS" it. We humans have to WORK to "get it" with any animal, but for me that learning process is part of the joy.

###Just watched the Hollywood Park replay show. Tin Man was awesome (again) ;o)

### Have a great day, everybody. July 1. Where does the time go?

Posted by: KAY at July 1, 2007 11:50 AM

I guess it's a good thing I'm not in charge. That piece of crap that hurt the puppy would have gotten the death penalty immediately. Sometimes I wish we would be wiped out so the whole process could start over. We as a human race have taken so many wrong turns. Many talk about making things better but mainly it's all talk. Their are a few out there who mean it though. Not many but a few. It's hard to have faith in people when things like this happen. Sorry just had to vent a little.

URGENT (!?)

Dear Shelley A, Deb, and Everyone,

The 2007 Farm Bill is to voted on SOON.

The information that I received is that Section 123 of the Amendment to that bill, if passed as written, would render VOID, any legislation, State or Federal, that would prohibit the transport of animals, INCLUDING HORSES, for the purpose of slaughter.

What do you know about this?

Why are we not hearing and reading more about it?

Why are we not URGENTLY instructed and encouraged, to contact our Congressmen and demand that they OPPOSE Section 123 of the Amendment to the 2007 Farm Bill?

I have already called and written Vern Ehlers, in Michigan.

Who else should we contact?

They will vote on it VERY SOON.

Today's Anna House update:

We are up to EIGHTEEN contributors to the FoB Anna House ad that will look like this flyer; pledges are above $350, and our goal is $600.

No amount is too small...as I am frequently told by the many organizations that solicit money from me, "It's not the amount of dollars, it's the amount of participation."

So if you are interested in contributing or in finding out more, please go here: Anna House Saratoga Benefit

Thanks, everyone, and have a great day--

Otherlyn,
Shelly and Debra HAVE BEEN urging all to mention Section 123 of the Farm Bill to oppose it when calling.

"...when you contact your Representatives in the House today please remember to urge them to oppose SECTION 123 OF THE AMENDMENT to the 2007 Farm Bill. Section 123 of the Amendment would nullify any State or Federal legislation that would prohibit transport of animals, INCLUDING HORSES, for the purpose of slaughter...You might want to start with HR503 and end with this just to let them know that this bill is trying to make an end run around the federal legislation that we are trying to pass. This way they can connect the dots!!"

This has been in their posts for a couple of weeks now.

Good Sunday Morning Famblee:)

For any of you who might have seen my post from yesterday, 12:20a.m....the new babies and Mom were all 'dine&fandy' as of last night at 11P:)

I put my porch light on to peek...and they were all THREE of them together no more than 20' from my door:) This morning, they have disappeared...my daughter found a great website last evening and we called the lady...she said mom will move them, as even though they are born with NO odor..as they 'potty' they make odor..so MaMa will continue moving them until they are strong enough to keep up w/her if need be:)

If anyone is interested, the website is filled w/all kinds of information...www.fawnrescue.org
They are located in either Marin or Sonoma County CA.

LADEEATTAFENS UPDATE:)

I just couldn't STAND IT one more day, so I stopped by to see Mister and Rosie last evening:)

Mom has been away for a week....didn't want to bother Dad...but called to ask if I might please just stop by for a few minutes and the answer was YES:)

I haven't really spent time with them for WEEKS...because of illness on their 'parents' part or my schedule...so I walked through the gate armed w/a bag of baby carrots...both had just come in from the field for dinner...but somehow Mister heard me walking down to their pens/stalls....his beautiful HORSEY HEAD peeeeeked out from his stall:) He was SO excited to see the ladeeee:) I let myself into his pen and gave him carrots....he was NICKERING AND NICKERING at me:) I pet him, I stroked him, I SMOOSHED my face into his horsey neck and shoulders....it was HEVVINLY!!! And he just 'drank' in every single moment, just like I did:)

Rosie was busy eating, but I let myself into her pen and she came away from her dinner, too! I gave her hugs....:) and carrots, and strokes and lovings...I have learned w/ her to take her 'chin' in my hand..and hold her still...Rosie is a wee-bit skittish...and then she 'comes into me'...and allows me to hold her face and she rests her nose and forehead onto my shoulder/neck...we 'hug' one another:) I spent some time with her...then she went back into her stall and ate more dinner....back over to the Mister's 'house'...and we spent more time together...just 'hangin' out'...I mean that literally...remember him? He gets so 'relaxed' when I'm talking/petting him, that everything just 'hangs out'....:) Cracks me UP!!! He loves his Auntylynneladeeeattafens:) !!!!

So....I spent about an hour with them...they enjoyed carrots and fresh water to drink...and lovings and needless to say Famblee, I came away from there completely rejuvinated and filled with happiness and much love!!

Mom is due home tomorrow sometime, and I am hoping to be able to go visit her and together, she and I spend 'alotsa' time with the 'kids' it is really FUN:)

I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday! Rest have fun...enjoy your famblee's and tomorrow we MARCH....call/write/fax....carry the EVER famous RED/WHITE/BARBARO:) We WILL win...we WILL be heard....we ARE a force to be RECKONED with:)

Wet, wet, wet. Actually, the sun has come out for a change, but I bet it won't be for long. I hope it's drier where you all are. I see Aidan O'Brien has just had the first three home in the Irish Derby, with Soldier of Fortune winning.

### Alex.

Do I remember you saying some time back that you are a friend of Geoff Billington? Well he has just won the Hickstead Derby at the age of 52! It was literally a grey day there... it was nearly rained off but just went ahead in horrible muddy conditions and three out of the top four were greys. Geoff Billington won on a lovely grey called Cassabachus - the only clear (well one time fault). He was so pleased and everyone else was thrilled for him as well. Forty thousand quid richer to boot - not a bad afternoon's work.

july 1,2207.

the trunk of this day
glowing - dappled.-.cool canadian air - bright sunshine

the gifts tumble in front
of the past ten months
to a year
bloom in my heart

i am spell bound
that kindness ,random acts of kindness in fact
blossom
and the opportunity to touch leaders
that sit and often gather stale, stoic indifferent
air

is remarkable testament to
BARBARO
his magnificent spirit
that supports even the vision of dance i do

for LAVA MAN
who returned from dubai with his soul intact

his owners so intelligent it seems
their love very bold and distinct
to have him win yesterday and feel that he must have been privately
vindicated by his own powers
this is an assumption i cherish , all day long
and forever

the way the cosmic humor works
'to have drawn me to create a work filled with the arabian horse
hooves ridden by the janjaweed
evil;elixirs of brutality

and be a a part of a benefit that is
for '''THE INVISIBLE CHILDREN OF NORHTHEN UGANDA.
.THE
the chidlren that are stolen and forced into becoming killing
machines with drug induced powers to not think of what terror and
brutality they are being asked to commit
bodies shaking in terror and altered rage
huge uzis in their little hands

the theater is called BOULTON CENTER, BAY SHORE, NY

THAT OUR new bolton center for animals
IS SIMILAR
IS A HAUNTING LITTLE MOMENT
TO PONDER

THE PRISTINE DEVOTION OF SO MANY
I carry with me alwys that sense of his
HIS GREATNESS HIS GRACE AND HIS MAGNIFICENT TALENT
DISPLAYED WITH SUCH INTELLIGENCE AND RESOLVE
HIS HEART AND VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE
COURAGE ABOVE ALL

I look at the crisp underside of an oak leaf a squirrel dropped on
his way to his nest

if you turn the leaf around, upside down
you see the big veins that carry light to the stem
they pulse with a mysterious strength
and i marvel at who made this
so complete
a ''technical ''wonder

that looking at a horse
its message alwasy so unique
not one a like
the realm of understanding
that can come from just simply considering the joy of
connections EACH littlE and then big connection
down to a hair of grass

where loved ones become dust
in their time to leave for larger terrain
the eloguence of a running brook or fountain near by

the connection of breathing together

looking directLy into someone;s eyes
--------------------------------------------------------
the elephant bent down to gaze into mine

her amber pools- my blue nordic streams
her huge capacity to love slowly infolding in some liquid vibration
and understand with all senses flaring
me lurching a bit
to comprehend-- to understand
until i just let go

standing still
till she reaches out .
.to caress the hair and scan my head.
.
perhaps all creatures do this
in their own ways
invisible and visible
and if i am in a rush i might miss the whole deal
yikes
i slow down today for sure

to feel everything as if i were in slow motion
..the air, the ground
the water the sand..
the birds tossing in the waves
the spray adding a froth to the sharp clean horizon

'i hear the soft nickering
i see the strength and resolve
in each of their steps
..how to
