Barbaro Updates: 321

updates are now here.

Update 2115: Both Street Sense and Curlin posted nice easy 5/8ths breezes this morning at Churchill Downs. They are starting to prepare for their second half of the year campaigns which could possibly see them meeting 2 - 3 times: Street Sense, Curlin Work at Churchill Downs.

Update 2114: This weekend I read After the Finish Line which is a great read for those of us who are relatively new to horse slaughter issues. I wanted to read it for background information. Highly recommended.

I just returned from New Holland. This was my third visit, and each visit was similar in experience. Bev and Jo were there and Christy was on her way. I know Bev had made three purchases and Jo one, but likely there will be more. I fell for one of the horses, Bev purchased it!

Update 2113: A gorgeous morning this morning with plenty of air and sunshine. A couple of loose horses around given the sharper morning and the fact it is a monday and most horses had sunday off. I had two to ride. First out was Kitty. She was fired up and it took her a good ten minutes to settle down. Tim was on the Two Punch 2yo filly, and she also was a little fired up. Anyway, once settled they went nicely together on the dirt, jogging back to the 5/8ths and galloping a mile. My second horse was Nautical Agent. Her first day out since her race last week at Delaware. She was in fine spirits, and went across the fields with Tim on Nonpareil. A lovely day to take horses across the fields, a few deer around but this did not cause any problems. Victor Molina stopped by and we had a quick chat. He is not allowed on the grounds at Philadelphia Park at this point so I am guessing is trying to keep busy at Fair Hill so when he is allowed back to work he will be sharp and ready to go.

Update 2112: The Dwyer at Belmont, on July 4, sees the return of a couple of key three year olds after their efforts to contend in the Derby, NoBiz Like ShoBiz and Any Given Saturday, they are joined by Sightseeing (the Wood 1-2-3) and three others: Nobiz Like Shobiz Likely Choice in Dwyer.

Michael Matz's Street Sounds, who appeared to be compromized in her last start by tactics, made a return to the winner's circle on sunday via a disqualification: Street Sounds Invades for Bison City Win Via DQ, excerpt:

"It was unfortunate what happened," said Matz. "It happens to all of us, either way. I don't know exactly what went on out there. We'll take the outcome, that's for sure."

Speculating that he may have had Street Sounds too sharp going into the Oaks, in which she finished third, Matz was much more pleased with how the Ontario-bred performed in the Bison City.

"She rated better today," said Matz. "Ramon had a bit of trouble with her the day of the Oaks, but today she did everything the right way."

Dominguez, whose most recent Woodbine tally came with Better Talk Now in the Sky Classic Stakes last September, was pleased with how his mount finished.

"Unfortunately, in the Oaks, she had a very bad ride," offered Dominguez. "I'm still learning about this surface and the fractions, I realize, were way too fast. Today, I was a little more self-conscious about it. I took a hold of her and let her relax -- more like a grass race. She finished up nicely. I was pleased with the way she ran."

We cannot all sit on the same side of the Fire. A Council Fire forms a circle, not a line or a square. When we move to the side, we still sit at the Fire with our Brothers and Sisters, but as we move away from one we move toward another.

The circle, like the Dream Hoop, brings us ever back to where we start. Any time words of respect and love are spoken, they will return as given. A harsh word runs forever in the circle, eventually vanishing from the wear against itself.

Love settles within the Circle, embracing it and thereby lasting forever, turning within itself. The Medicine Wheel is the circle of life (sometimes referred to as the Scared Hoop) Starting with birth and continuing through out our lifes until death, when we have gone full circle.

The Medicine wheel has four Direction, each direction offering it's own lessons, color, and animal guide. There are to paths shown which cross in the center, at which point for me is the heart. (for when you work from your heart, you can reach all directions.) The path from East to West is the path of spirits, (the Blue Road) the path from South to North is our physical Walk (the Red Road ).
East - beginnings, purity, family, innocence, amazement of Life
South - youth - passions of life, friendships, self-control
West - Adulthood - solitude, stillness, going inside oneself, reflection
North - Place of the Ancient Ones who have gone over - place of wisdom
Above - Freedom of mind, body, spirit below - Nuturing, Mother, life

Good Monday Morning FOBs

As Cal noted, the US slaughterhouses are not operating. For that we can be thankful. But we can not rest until S.311 and H.R.503 are passed. We need the federal legislation to stop the horses being shipped to Mexico and Canada So we MUST keep calling, faxing, emailing, writing to the legislators to pressure them.

Have a wonderful day!!

Good Morning, All,

No horses screaming today, Thank God...but the work must be stepped up, anyway.

The 2007 Farm Bill will be voted on SOON.

Please call your Congressmen. Call both offices (local and in Washington), today, tomorrow, the next day, etc, until we get this accomplished.

Demand that they OPPOSE Section 123 of the Amendment to the 2007 Farm Bill.

That section of the amendment MUST be eliminated, PERIOD.

This is urgent and imperative.

Let's Ride!

STEVE B (and anyone who wants to help the undernourished, orphaned foal Ossie)...if you go to the Pulaski County Humane Society website www.warmhearts.org there are options for donating (including PayPal)...just be sure to note that your contribution is for Ossie's formula.

They are hoping that a large group of people will each donate $20. for his formula because he will need it for several months - he is about 40 pounds underweight!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU...all the rescue stories are worthy of our help and heartbreaking, but this one just drew me in because Gracie, Ossie's mama, was so very, very sick but she managed to stay with her baby until they were both brought to safety!

Steve - if you see this, just post a message to me or by email mllebutterfly@sbcglobal.net so I know you have the info - thank you!

Good Morning FOB's

Strategy for Monday July 2

As of today, there are no horses being slaughtered on American soil. While this may only be temporary, it is a reason to celebrate. HOWEVER, the slaughter of our horses will NEVER stop without the passage of federal legislation. Everyday that passes, more American horses are being transported out of this country to meet their horrible fate.

With all three slaughter houses shut down in America, we must now STOP THE CRUEL AND INHUMANE TRANSPORTATION. Tell your Senators/Representatives how much our horses are suffering on their way to Canada and Mexico. Each day the federal legislation is not passed our horses continue to suffer a cruel and inhumane journey.

In lieu of lists this week, you have been asked to contact the representatives in your district:

This week, your representatives will be working in their District Offices. The best thing you can do is to arrange a meeting with members of Congress who have not yet cosponsored, especially those who cosponsored last year. We urge you to try to make an appointment to meet with them in person. You should try to organize small local groups and request a meeting in their district office. Being constituents will make it easier to get an appointment. If the Representative is not available, then the District Director is the next best thing.

In addition, when you contact your Representatives in the House please remember to urge them to oppose SECTION 123 OF THE AMENDMENT to the 2007 Farm Bill. Section 123 of the Amendment would nullify any State or Federal legislation that would prohibit transport of animals, INCLUDING HORSES, for the purpose of slaughter. It could actually allow the Texas slaughterhouses to open again. You might want to start with HR503 and end with this just to let them know that this bill is trying to make an end run around the federal legislation that we are trying to pass. This way they can connect the dots!!

For those of you who would like to make calls in addition to our strategy and need direction, you can follow the list posted by Habitat for Horses. But don't forget to call your OWN reps.

There is still a need for state groups'..as you've read above, they've been VERY effective in getting cosponsors. Right now we're looking for leaders in for Missouri, Louisiana, Vermont and New Hampshire. To find out how you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

Several offices have informed us that the pro slaughter people are more organized than ever and are making a lot of noise this year. We can't let them be louder than us.

Remember...WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE.let it be heard!!

Thanks and have a great day!
Shelley and Debra

Good Morning All,
No screaming...Thank God!Our horses have peace.
What a wonderful weekend,Villa Secretariat's great granddaughter loved her kisses, carotts and apples from all of you, I was nuzzled by her. She has a bad leg and when I asked her how her leg was she lifted it up to show me. She is so sweet. Everytime Arrow ate his treats he would lean out of his stall and give kisses. Cupid the sweet dainty one enjoyed hers too, she is so nice, I got a few kisses on the palm of my hand. Horse's,horses everywhere. I got nipped twice it hurt. Then the stallion,I said hi and touched his nose, he grabbed a hold of my ring with finger attached and pulled, that really hurt. I stood by and watched him for a while. He is a champion ring horse. He had a look in his eye. I was told he goes after the geldings now, has broken through his door and kicks the walls enough. I keep my distance. It was beautiful outside just enjoying the moring and day, the wonderful smell the nickers, all the horses. It is a God given place. We talked staughter, laminitis and what the FOB's are doing and all the hard work. I was told to pass Excellent Job!!!!! on to all of you. By the way all the horses said thank you for the woderful treats, kisses and hugs. They know the name FOB's now.

Good Morning Darling Barbaro. Thank you.

Hay, Hay Alex.

Susan W., You are in my thoughts and prayers.

An old song for Barbaro on this Monday morning. Thinking of you my friend and wishing you were still here. WE will Follow You Bobby...forever

Its by far the hardest thing Ive ever done
To be so in love with you and so alone

Follow me where I go what I do and who I know
Make it part of you to be a part of me
Follow me up and down all the way and all around
Take my hand and say youll follow me

Its long been on my mind
You know its been a long, long time
Ive tried to find the way that I can make you understand
The way I feel about you and just how much I need you
To be there where I can talk to you
When theres no one else around

Follow me where I go what I do and who I know
Make it part of you to be a part of me
Follow me up and down all the way and all around
Take my hand and say youll follow me

You see Id like to share my life with you
And show you things Ive seen
Places that Im going to places where Ive been
To have you there beside me and never be alone
And all the time that youre with me
We will be at home

Follow me where I go what I do and who I know
Make it part of you to be a part of me
Follow me up and down all the way
Take my hand and I will follow you

Good Monday Morning Dear Famblee:)

Twenty-Two Monday mornings ago, our Boy found his way to the Bridge...twenty two!!

Look at how much positive has taken place in these twenty-two Mondays! I'm sorry I don't have exact numbers...but I KNOW we have gained MANY co-sponsors in the House and Senate to end h/s...there have been COUNTLESS numbers of horses SAVED...through our efforts...all over these United States...new foals born...:)Along with Nicanor and "Dyna-Soar" (unofficial name of B's 'babiest' bro born in April)...we have helped save Nurse Mare Foals...we have given lots of monies to Laminitis Fund at UPENN...we have helped raise awareness in our circle of friends, relatives and even perfect strangers of our horses and their needs...people from this 'table' have and are looking into adopting horses...We have spread smiles from one side of our country to the other East/West/North/South!!All in Honor of BARBARO! And it's only the beginning:)

I have had the great pleasure of meeting Mister, Rosie and Black Jack in these past twenty-two Mondays....:) I'd NEVER have met them otherwise!

I know you each have a story to tell of things in your own lives which have changed because of January 29, 2007...talk about the "Ripple Effect" :)

Remember how awfully sad we were twenty-two Mondays ago....the hole in the world which was SO present? Now these many Mondays later yes...still a sadness...but for myself, certainly not so 'raw' a sadness...and there is light at the end of the tunnel afterall! In fact, there has been light all along the way...I just didn't see it at first:) Our Boy is with us every step of the way...and THIS Monday, I believe he is SMILING....very BIG:)

Lynne-Barbaro's Forever Friend in CA

Posted by: Lynne Brown at July 2, 2007 3:52 PM

Good morning brothers and sisters:
I stupidly went on a cleaning binge while awaiting out two arrivals from the kansas to NJ haul this weekend. Now: do you think I can find ANYTHING i need? DUH.
I am amazed and awed all over again at the racing greyhound's ability to just jump from one "planet" to another. One day they're covered in biting flies and standing in waterlogged runs and kennels, the next, theyt're being transported through many doifferent volunteers along a 1650 route, and then they're here: dealing with my 11 and AND THE BITCH coming into season (oh joy) and the male intact (more joy). So I am on the phone already begging my Vets to get those nuts off thboy asap...she'sll be spayed too, but the neuter is so easy. Zip.Zop: 5 minutes: they're GONE!!!!!
Of course, they can still harbor little live swimmers for 5-6 weeks. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. So she'll get dentalled and spayed as asp as well...

But it is glorious to watch them wander the house, exploring. They are both in their open crates now> fast asleep: the big white guy (Erik) is on his back, favorite GH position for sleep. And she is in the crate next to him: after exploring the refigerator, the bathroom, and counter top (ahem) Jessie's remaining vestigaes of incision on her throat. Watching TV. SHe loves to watch TV>
Her name is Ursula. OOP: she's here with her head in my lap...And just gave me a little kiss. She is still semi slathered with this "homemade" fly repellant: seems to be part crisco and part who knows what....I've already washed most of it off, but she'll have a full bath when I get back from lunch.

They are so brave, so alive, so ready to begin their new lives...and then there's my guys: so tolerant, so accepting. This little Ursula: the tail never stops wagging....
Good calling today, all. The aides are at their desks as far as I know....I will try to contact WALSH>>>sigh.

Safe rides to all working horses today, safe for the riders, safe for the mounts...wonderful story about Secretariat's grandaughter...

Love to all: susan We are still with you, girl. Hope and love to all who mourn or suffer from any malady....jonna and the Horde PLUS TWO

######
UNSOLICITED FRIARLY COMMENTS PRE MORNING REPOST:
Without federal legislation banning the transport of horses (part of the AHSPA) these equines are just being taken further north -- or further south. In other words, they're still not safe.

Great races this weekend, Lava Man has a tremendous heart and so does A.P. Xcellent. He is the grandson of the great Exceller.

Nancy in CT - I also bet Delightful Kiss again in the Iowa Derby and my winnings from the exacta
helped save a horse at the auction on Saturday.

How wonderful there are no horses being slaughtered in our country, now we need to get the bills passed to keep them from going to Canada and Mexico. Please don't forget to mention Section 123 of the farm bill - it would nullify all state laws for animals already in effect including states that prohibit horse slaughter.

Kentucky Callers...I spoke to Cory Hicks, aide to Congressman Ed Whitfield today. He was in strong favor of having Kentucky constituents call their congressional leaders asking for their support of HR. 503 and S. 311.

He said he knows the delegation hears from the pro slaughter side routinely.

Here are the names and current status of the Representatives:

Ben Chandler-co sponsor 2007

Ron Lewis (cosponsor 2006, but not 2007)

Ed Whitfield (wrote the legislation so he is definitely on our side)

Geoff Davis-voted in favor 2006, but not a cosponsor

Harold Rogers-cosponsor 2007

John Yarmuth-cosponsor 2007

45+2

All ! The Kansas rescue of 45 horses and 2 donkeys was a huge "save" and many contributed to save these horses from the "bad" trucks. BRAVO !
The needs to "SUSTAIN" are ongoing - as the horses are mended to, tended to and adopted out.
Check out the Kansas on the Discussion site under "Rescue" ......check out the pix of many of these beautiful horses .... read the heartfelt posts from fellow FsOB ....and consider a SUSTAIN donation. IF each of us reading this contributed even $10 - there would be alot of help headed to the continuing welfare of these fortunate horses (and donkeys). We did it once - we can do it again. Saving the horses, as we know involves:
Save AND SUPPORT.

BARB M - oooooh, the exacta! Aren't you the lucky one? I'm not very experienced, so I just bet Delightful Kiss to win - LOVE THAT HORSE! I did win the Belmont trifecta, choosing the horses with my usual lack of logic - LOL! I actually put in Rags to Riches in the tri because I felt sorry for her - I had read so many articles saying that "she didn't belong in that race" etc. But all the while I was saying to myself, "What on earth are you doing playing a trifecta?" LOL!

I would love to plant a kiss on Delightful Kiss's soft velvety nose...and not just because he won!

Congratulations on helping save a horse with your winnings...I normally use mine for medical issues for horses who have already been saved, but this time Delightful Kiss and Butterfly Belle will help an FOB in need instead!

of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an

corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Hay Pennsylvanians, are you willing to be a voice for the HORSES?

We really need more co-sponsors to be assured that our bills pass the Senate and House when they are brought to a vote. Pennsylvania is a big Ag state, and we are fighting a tough lobby. WILL YOU HELP US?

We are Team Barbaro Pennsylvania. Our team is now 48 strong and we’d like more of you to join us! We have 9 legislators who have not co-sponsored the bills. We are experiencing success! We do need more assistance, however...

Please tell me you are willing to be a voice for the horses! They cannot speak for themselves!

There are 4 or 5 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

I am the Pennsylvania State Leader. Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation. You can email me at Lor's Email Addy.

OUR HORSES NEED YOUR HELP!

A few minutes each day for our Horses it not much to ask…is it?

I GET IT. I bet you GET IT too. Let’s ROLL for the silent, suffering horses!

Hey, family -

Hope all are well. I have not been on the board for weeks - many family/old friend obligations - but have thought of everyone often.

I gather that something is up with Susan W - best wishes, whatever the problem is.

Good news out of Illinois - and a very nice job by the court there. I HATED that the TRO was granted, but knew that only through careful legal work could a lasting shutdown be achieved. Blessings to Angela, Dawn - the whole frontline crew. I could not do that, and can only respect and admire those who carry the flag for the rest of us.

In the interim, until I catch up, love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day - courage and kindness.

A congressional aide asked me a question about Section 123 Amendment to the 2007 Farm Bill. They wanted to know how this amendment would impact federal legislation on anti slaughter. In other words, if this amendment passes, is HR 503, S 311 dead in the water?

I didn't know the answer, do any of you know this answer?

In addition, when you contact your Representatives in the House please remember to urge them to oppose SECTION 123 OF THE AMENDMENT to the 2007 Farm Bill. Section 123 of the Amendment would nullify any State or Federal legislation that would prohibit transport of animals, INCLUDING HORSES, for the purpose of slaughter. It could actually allow the Texas slaughterhouses to open again. You might want to start with HR503 and end with this just to let them know that this bill is trying to make an end run around the federal legislation that would effectively nullify HR503 or S311.....

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION left to help the horses? (I'm addressing FOBs - is this a rhetorical question, or what?)

This is today’s daily target list from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter) Yahoo Group.
The Senators on this list are being targeted by other antislaughter groups today, so our voices add to the impact and IMO that is A GOOD THING.

CAVEAT from CJ, per request from TWR official national strategy FOBs Shelley A and DebraWI - PLEASE do not start on this list until AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE TWR STRATEGY AND INSTRUCTIONS FROM YOUR STATE LEADER (if any). If you're not in a State group yet, PLEASE email sbreaux1@verizon.net to join or form one.

Note - I do not know former positions of all of these Senators; I believe that both Nelson and Martinez of Florida were cosponsors of S 1915 last session. I will repost this list here as and when I learn more of all their track records on the HS issue. #Harriette, could you possibly repost your farewell story from Barbaro today? You wrote it the day we lost him,it was so beautiful, and comforting.

Barbaro's message to Laurie H. would be nice to read again, too.

Everyone,Laurie H. asked the other day if any of the FOBs,Alex included, could let her know about how the weather in Minnesota would affect her decision re. where she will board her future horse? She checked out a place she liked very much, but the horse would not be in a barn. I think this might be extra difficult for someone who wraps our Barbaro nightly in a wonderfully warm, cashmere blanket?

Laurie H,my nephew lives in Finlayson,Mn. Is that anywhere near you? That sounds sooo cold for an outdoor horse with all of that snow, temps below 0!!

#Thank you Harriette, after reading Sean Clancy's Barbaro book last night my heart is heavy with missing him all over again.

Just received this email from michelle tolley; hope it helps.

Hello everyone,

The new Farm Bill will be voted on in the House of Representatives SOON -
Amendment to AG Bill
Bill Number: HR2419

Please contact your Representatives, and urge them to OPPOSE SECTION 123 OF THE AMENDMENT TO THE 2007 FARM BILL.

Section 123 would NULLIFY State or Federal legislation that prohibits transport of animals - including HORSES - for the purpose of slaughter -
And it could also allow the (2) slaughter plants in Texas to re-open for "business."

Please share with your Representative this Bill is trying to make an "end run" around the federal legislation in the House to ban horse slaughter - (HR503).

For the Horses,
Michelle

Visited Longmeadow Rescue Ranch yesterday with Susan E and several other FOBs; what a wonderful place. Met many of the survivors of the I-44 crash near St. Louis, including Twist of Fate (Twister), the sole surviving foal of one of the pg mamas. (The other survivors who were in foal, lost them.)

I had a hard time to keep from breaking up when meeting the horses and hearing details of the injuries they suffered, straight from rescuers who were right there on the scene assisting in getting horses out of the wreck.

We also got to meet goats, sheep, a very big pig, a llama, and various kinds of birds. All in all a very worthwhile experience.

I'm sure Susan E, who masterminded the daytrip, will be posting more details and pics from the trip; watch here and at the DB. She brought the traveling Barbaro Beanie Baby along and I expect to see pics of the said BBB taken at Longmeadow with various of the horses, including Twister.

Hi All,
I just wanted to let everyone know that wrote into the Ranchland News in Colorado last week that they did print each and every one of your letters to the editor! Thank you everyone! If you had not done that, I would've been the only one opposing slaughter. There were two really long letters that were pro-slaughter. One from a woman whose argument was horse prices will go down if the slaughter plants are closed, the videos on slaughter are 15-20 years old, and who are we to tell anyone not to eat horsemeat. She then went into a long story of how she tried to give her horse that had gotten ringbone (and was then "unsafe" for her kids) to several rescues and then also tried to give her to a wild cat sanctuary for meat and noone would take her. So, she took her to an auction and got a whole $163.00 for her, but at least her body was used for something besides being buried in the ground. And, at least the slaughter houses provide jobs for people. She ended it with saying the sentiments voiced by Toni Gibbons were nice and sweet, but she just didn't think that they have any basis in the reality of the livestock business.
Made me sick to read it.

The other letter was from a guy that wouldn't ever eat horsemeat, but if other people want to, then that's nobody else's business. He stated all the plants are regulated and inspected; cattle are killed everyday in that fashion; if there was not "proper disposal" of these animals, it will drive up hay prices and people will start killing them in pastures and have them wandering around without homes and slowly starving to death; it drives horse prices down so people will make less money; he doesn't know why people like Ms. Gibbons don't mind their own business as most people love their horses and would never kill, stab them or bag them up for somebody to eat. If Ms. Gibbons knew that, she would never have written the article. He doesn't like a lot of things in life, but is not out trying to stop something that makes a lot of people an honest living.

I don't even know how to respond to that way of thinking...I'm getting so I don't much like living in Elbert county. Most of the county is rural with many, many horse owners and I was the only one from my county that wrote in opposing slaughter. Unbelievable. So THANK YOU for writing in. At least it made us 7 to 2 insteatd of 2 to 1. I'll let you all know if there are any more letters for pro slaughter or not next week.

You guys are the best!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!

I still have a hole in my heart from Barbaro and it will never be filled, but my love for him does still get me through.

###
Jonna... I just love to hear about your time with the Grey's. But more so, the way you put it... it never fails to put a smile on my face, if not a burst of laughter, thank you for being you!!!

###
Jean Nolan... So glad to see you back. You have been missed.

###
To the rest of my family... Thank you so much for your love and concern for my son and I. We are slowly getting better. He quicker than I...Oh to be 19 - 20 yrs old again...hahaha, at least you heal quicker and have a whole lot more motivation to get out and about, I can't keep him still. Just pray this boy will realize his limits. He has to wear a special bracelet until he is 100%, just in case he is in an accident or position to not tell the E.M.T.'s or ER about his spleen. But, other than that we are on the mend.

I thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and didn't mean to worry anyone. I just took the weekend off to rest. I do still read even if I don't post, but it is usually later in the evening or at night.
I have missed you all and hopefully will be back to my old self and routine very soon.

Love & Hugs to ALL.

Verna1 -
Thank you for the greeting, my friend. I am so sorry to know - (not EXACTLY, but generally) - that you and your son were subjected to problems, but happy to glean that you are recovering!
I'll catch up. In the meantime, you rest, and repair. And yes, the curse of 15 - 30 year old child is that it is deeply convinced it is immortal, and it gets well so DANGED fast! Lucky, foolish creatures!

###By request, Nancy, for you..

For All Of Us who Love Barbaro
I dedicate this story.

Barbaro was having another bad day, he hadn’t slept well. Even with the pain medicine he still hurt. His legs hurt, all of them, his back hooves hurt. He hurt all over and he was tired. He loved all the people here at NBC, especially Dr Richardson, but he was tired of these four walls, he wanted to go outside and feel the warm sun again. He loved his mom more than anyone, she knew him better than anyone, and bless her heart, she always had the blue tote with the fresh Lael grass. Lately, he didn’t even much feel like eating, but he did to please her, He always tried to put on a show of feeling good for mom, even trying to nip her occasionally to make her smile. He loved to see mom smile.
But still, the truth was he hurt and he wanted Dr Richardson to make him well, once and for all.

When Dr Richardson came that morning, he had his “procedure” face on. Here we go again, Barbaro thought. Another surgery, I’ll wake up in the swimming pool. I sure hope Dr R has the cure for me this time.

When Barbaro started waking up, he felt something tickling his nose and when he tried to open his eyes there was a light so bright it almost blinded him. The light felt wonderful, it was so warm, and it was hard to describe, the light felt like love. It surrounded him and felt so good, like all the hugs his mom had ever given him. When his eyes adjusted to the light more things became aware to Barbaro.

He wasn’t in a pool ,he was in a field of clover and buttercups and the tickle on his nose was a butterfly! He also noticed he felt no pain, his crooked legs were straight again ,his hooves were well ! Dr R had done it, he remembered now the last thing DrR had said….Barbaro when you wake up you’ll be good as new!
The Light he felt, he now knew was GOD himself, the Creator of all life.

God himself welcomed him to Rainbow Bridge. He explained to Barbaro it is here that all animals wait for their human keepers
So they can cross the bridge to Heaven together.

Barbaro had never seen so many horses, dogs, cats, animals and birds of every kind, large and small. Everyone got along, no one was sick and all made him feel loved and at home.

A couple of the horse who greeted him were there by special permission from God, they had already crossed over the Bridge but wanted to welcome Barbaro. Barbaro knew of the legendary stores of Man O War, Seabiscuit and War Admiral, here they were to say hello. There were also a couple donkeys that came to greet him. One once carried pregnant Mary into Bethlehem, the other one had carried Jesus in to Jerusalem.

Barbaro was so happy to be here. He thought this has to be the greatest place in all the world . He spent the afternoon racing Secretariat to the fence and eating clover with Lost in the Fog. Yes, he was very busy his first day at the bridge, he even learned he could FLY!! He always knew he could run fast, now he’d become a horse angel and he could fly!! He could look down on Earth and see all the people who loved him. He could finally put names and faces together. All the FOB that had faithfully loved and prayed for him, sent him cards and letters , baskets of flowers, apples and carrots, pears and those green mints he loved.
He was happy but they all looked sad. He wanted to yell to them,
“Hay, it’s me, Barbaro,I’m well. Your prayers have been answered. Don’t be sad.”

Barbaro had had a long day. He thought it was time to go to sleep. But before he did he had one thing he had to do.

Hello Laurie H,
I know it’s been a long day, you look sad & tired. Why don’t we get your blanket.. Honey, tonight I’m going to cover you with my blanket, the sage cashmere one you gave me, it’s always been my favorite. Don’t be sad, Laurie, God made me well.
Tonight, We’ll pull the blanket high on your neck so you can feel my love for you. As you sleep the dream angel will come. Guess what, Laurie, it will be me! I’m your dream angel now. Sometimes when you’re just waking up, and you feel a tickle on your nose or a hair across your face, you’ll know I’ve been there to check on you. That tickle is my mane touching your face.
Shhh time to go to sleep. I’ll be here for you every night when you sleep.

XOXOxoxo Barbaro

That being taken care of Barbaro could finally lay down to sleep himself. He wanted to dream about the First Saturday in May,the day he and his pal Edgar had run the very best race. He could still remember Edgar’s hand on his mane, the smell of roses, his mom’s hug and he fell asleep hearing the song thousands sung that day…

Weep no more, my lady
Oh weep no more, today,
We will sing one song for
My Old Kentucky Home
For My Old Kentucky Home
Far Away………………….

I love you Barbaro

Please read on discussion board

URGENT Kansas 45+2 need your help

There has been very little response to this request. Maybe because there aren't specific amounts being requested but they still need all the help they can for these rescued horses. Many of the horses have special health needs. Its great to save the horses from slaughter but we must sustain them once they've been rescued as well. Thanks.

And what about Salvation with a broken leg, it reads no foals under 6 Months. He was under 3 months. And the blind mare that was rescued, and the ponys. Joke, and a sick one at that! What a law.

_______________________________________________
And this I received from one of my calling group today. It's Unbelievable.

I received in the mail today this letter from Rep. Gus Bilirakis of Florida in reply to my letter supporting
H.R. 503. Since I have not written to him, I assume he got my name and address from the blanket letter I sent for our delegation to Washington to distribute to all senators and representatives:

"Thank you so much for contacting me to share your
support of the American Horse Slaughter Protection
Act. Like you, I too am concerned that the "living
symbols of the historic and pioneering spirit of the American West" may fall victim to abusive treatment.

"While I have not yet signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill, I intend to do so to voice my opposition to any instances of animal cruelty. The bill, now known as H.R. 249, was introduced in the 110th Congress by Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV). It was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources on 1/5/07. I will keep you posted of its progress as it winds its way throught the legislative process.

"As a resident of Florida's Ninth District, your
comments and opinions are an important source of
information to help me carry out my duties as your
federal representative, . . ." etc.

This is obviously a canned response. I am not a
Florida resident, and the phrase about "living symbols of the pioneering spirit" does not come from my letter.

Worse, like Bachus and others, he persists in
insisting that the bill is H.R. 249, when I clearly specified H.R. 503. What can we do when our representatives deliberately misconstrue our
communications?

On the positive side, it sounds as if he _might_
cosponsor a bill that passed back in April!

Flicka
Now that's a joke!

A portion of a repost:

Laurie H,my nephew lives in Finlayson,Mn. Is that anywhere near you? That sounds sooo cold for an outdoor horse with all of that snow, temps below 0!!
_______________________________

Hello Nancy Jean/Huntington Beach,Ca!

I have never heard of Finlayson...it sounds VERY Nordic! I need to see where that is located!

Nancy Jean, thank you sooo much for posting the info. about my concerns and request for advice on boarding a horse.

I have asked so many people about the "outside" situation, the concensus is that the horse may be happier outside and that most times, even when there's protection offered, they will stand out in the elements, with their behinds (can I say that, Alex?!) toward the wind.

But the "Mommy" in me would have such a hard time during cold nasty weather in Minnesota, knowing my little one is out in the elements.

I know that must sound silly to you horse people...

Nancy Jean, thank you again so very much. I appreciate your help.

Posted by: Laurie H. in MN at July 3, 2007 12:02 AM

I have ordered the book, too. Can't learn too much about this issue. The more we know, the more we can educate our legislators. We know the pro-slaughter contingent are busy spreading mis-information out there.

Posted by: Elizabeth Thompson at July 3, 2007 12:03 AM

#### Laurie H, the mommy in me puts my horses up every night now that I've finally got them "home"
They stayed out all the time before. Ky winters are no where near what MN winters are and horses do stand "butts" to the wind, rain and snow, but still I think in extreme conditions they need to be able to get shelter, food and non frozen water.

Of course I admit to being an over protective mom...

Posted by: Harriette Brillianthawk at July 3, 2007 12:16 AM

Why you are so very welcome Laurie H! You are one of our "crown jewels" here on the board,Im so very grateful for all of your Barbaro tuck-ins.

Finlayson is located between Duluth and Minn/St.Paul near the Interstate? 95 I think? It is a Nordic town actually, was settled by a group of Finnish immigrants. Which is pretty cool since my grandmother was from Finland! Lapland to be exact;land of reindeers and Santa Claus.

*I have a feeling your horse will be wearing a very warm blanket Laurie, hope you post pics when that happy day arrives!

You don't sound silly at all! I probably have the two most spoiled horses of all time. Both of mine run around, scream and holler if I don't shut them in their barn before the mosquitos come out in the evening. And...please have dinner waiting as soon as the door is shut, thank you very much. High winds, hail, blizzards and heavy rain also require mommy to bring food first and then shut the door. Running around, screaming and crying gets my attention pretty quickly...and they know it.

They love being outside in good weather, but love their shelter too!!

###
LaurieH, the mommy in me would make sure my baby had a stall, at least that way the cold wind would be blocked. What can I say, I know a lot of country people(some family, some friends) who think a dog belongs outside, but mine are right inside with me. Can't stand the though of them being out in the elements. But that just me... :)

Mary L.,

Are you talking about this from "Brent"?

RE: Awesome thoughts from one good soul to another

That's all that's in my email right now.....

########

Harriette, Nancy Jean, Debbie T., and Verna1,

THANK YOU you guys! I always pictured my horse snuggled in a stall of their own, dimly lit at night and maybe a conversation between a couple horses going on from time to time.

I remember reading that Barbaro considered himself "King" of his stall. Obviously he was proud and must have liked it somewhat to be so confident in there.

I want a horse to be comfortable and happy. ALL of us on this board want that for animals. The problem is, NO place has been perfect...

Thank you everyone! As soon as I recoup from Inventory, I am going to my thread on the forum and post a BIG thank you to those people also for their support, research, (Yes, research!), advice and sharing their experiences.

The time ALL of you have shown me, I am so thankful. You ALL have hearts of gold and I knew you would care about a horse who at this moment, has no name, no face, and no story to share...just yet. If I'm blessed with a horse, THIS will be the first place I will come to! To my frens....

Thank you so much from Laurie H. in MN and her "anticipated blessing!"

####Laurie H. Just to add my 2 cents....

I have 4 big dogs but alas, no horses....yet.

I would have to have a pretty good barn before I would get a horse. Different problem here, though. It is 107 degrees here today. Even in the winter, nothing like MN...I would have to bring my horse inside from the cold.

Everyone teases me about keeping the dogs inside on hot or cold days, but, owell. That is just me.

Best wishes to you and I hope you get your horse soon. Please let us all know how things are going.

Here is a portion of today's post by Joe at TB Friends. As many of you know, he normally posts two photos at the bottom of his daily post, and usually those are photos of horses just arrived or leaving with new owners. Yesterday, he posted two photos of horses recently bought from a killer buyer at the Turlock feed lot. Here is the result of that posting:

---------
Monday, July 2nd... Odd to be typing July, when only yesterday it was November. We begin with two birthdays. Katie Cooper lives in Davis, and today she turns 15. Katie takes pictures of horses and scenery, and sends them to us in the regular mail. When Katie becomes 16 she will have her choice of a car or a horse. So far the horse is in front by several lengths. Katie already has a boarding stable picked out. We also say Happy Birthday to Kristin in Vallejo, and today she is 22. One of our regular readers, Kristin will phone in the morning if there is a mistake on the journal. Hey Joe, you spelled banana wrong. Hey Joe, not enough commas. Well golly gee. There is usually no time to run inside, crank up the dial up, and make changes. Over a year ago Kristin took Cathy and I to a nice restaurant in Fairfield. Hey Joe, elbows off the table. Kristin owns a beautiful thoroughbred mare, and her name is Seems To Me. Kristin calls her Baby.

Yesterday I posted two pictures of recently rescued starving horses. Several parents phoned to say how unhappy they were. Their young daughters were terribly upset. A lady in San Francisco informs me she will no longer allow her daughter to read the morning journal.

There is abuse and cruelty which I never show you. Also horrible injuries from the race track. I know most of our hits come from young girls. The letters and phone calls say so. Posting pictures of a shattered left front leg, or showing you a horse that has been beaten with who knows what kind of tool, what good would that do?

I might have crossed the line yesterday, and I apologize. I should not have posted those pictures.

I disagree with adults who say kids need to learn about the real world. Kids need to see those kind of pictures. I disagree with all my being. And I screwed up.

Because young girls believe horses are romance. Horses are magical. Evil is not allowed. They already see enough bad things on the evening news. Horses are the epitome of beauty and all that is good. And it is many of these young girls who will grow up to own horses. To keep them safe. We must never destroy the magic.

Joe

Laurie H: My guys have shelter, but its funny, they use that the most in the summer when it is hot - In the winter, they tend to stay out in the cold - They do come looking for meals though. They also look more like wooly mammoths than horses - Its amazing how they fur up when the cold weather comes....It takes a howling wind for them to go into the barn, even if its really really cold...Thats what having horse friends is about - you stand together and stay warm.

Ellie,

I didn't realize that it was going to be difficult to find a place that I'm comfortable with to keep a horse. There's that ignorance for ya'...

I feel that I need to approve of the people first. If their kind hearts aren't visible, I will not need their services.

This last place, no stalls, the woman impressed me a great deal.

Thank you for sharing your love for your dogs with me! I feel enormous love for my "kids" and when it's too hot or too cold, we go out, get the job done, and back inside...right away!

Thank you Ellie. Good night to you and sweet dreams...of Barbaro.

O.K. Harriette,

I have to put in my two cents. I just have to get some tissues first.

I remember that post. I was a goner at the time.

It just makes me want to say thank you to all of you. My family just doesn't get it. We're all animals lovers, but they don't understand my fascination with Barbaro. Only you folks here.

Thanks for being here. Thanks, Harriette.

Patty in Dallas,

I don't know what to say... Your post of one sentence to me moved me to tears and took my breath away.

Thank you. Thank you so much. I will tuck him in on the Board again. Emma and I have our time with Barbaro each night. Last night we explained what fire-flies were to him!

Patty, may you feel the rush of a gentle breeze...from Barbaro.

Hay Frens,

Please go to the Discussion/Chat Board (the DB), and take a look at the 7 American horses who need your help to be saved from going to their deaths on foreign soil.

They need to be ransomed by July 4th, or death in Canada of Mexico awaits them.

Please help otherFOBs join resources to save them. They are quite beautiful, and are in need of rescue.

Thank, ) ^-^ O

Harriette,

I really enjoyed reading your beautiful story again. What a lovely perspective you had on such a sad, sad day. I know it helped me tremendously that day, and, although it brought back alot of old emotions tonite when I read it again, it also was, and is, again a source of comfort for me....thank you. Simply beautiful.

God Bless Barbaro, and all who miss him tonite.

ALEX...

I was just thinking...remember that question you asked about the grey horse in the DVD of the Del Park weekend. You wanted to know what the horses name was and what was the horse doing incorrectly?

Well, I was thinking....was that Swaggerstick? From Herringswell Stables? Thing is I dont know anything about training horses so I dont know what he was doing wrong but I could split the donation if someone else knew that half of the question. The only thing I could see was that he was oogling the crowd and showing off.

Its been driving me crazy,.... I did not get to Fair Hill until that Monday after but I did get to visit GM's barn and that horse is sticking in my head.... Swaggerstick.

Three weeks ago, you took flight
taking our hearts with you,
it's no wonder that we cannot feel.

I watch the tremendous finish in Kentucky
The drive, you and Edgar becoming the Centaur,
airborne, flawless, impossible, historic.
I watch your incredible drive; the two of you
bound in elevating your sport above this mortal realm.

Into the clouds you took us all. Novice to dreamer to owner.Trainer to groom, stable kids. Anyone with eyes could see you were starborne.

So...when the moon rises and pulls the constellations along in her diaphanous gown, I glimpse you. Running, leaping, bucking, rolling in God's great green pastures.

You and the White Mare, prancing together, necks arched, ears forward, feet splashing the lesser stars like so much sea foam, left by a retreating tide.

We will win for you. We will safeguard those that come after. We will carry our memories of you into the future, so you will stand with all the greats.
That your legacy may thrill and inspire other generations with what your name meant.

We will warm ourselves on the smoldering ruins of the slaughter houses. We will banish laminitis. We will bring young upstarts breezing onto safe track surfaces...good enough for the likes of you, my sweet.

My sweet comet of a horse. My shining templar.
My reason to believe I can make a difference.

In my dreams, you are so docile that I am bareback, and I am lost in your mane, arms around your neck, crouched like a sparrow hawk on your back, eyes closed, trusting you to seal this great wound, even if it is only in my dreams.

Sweet Dreams Barbaro. You are the horse that has made the difference between good and bad. You showed that "anything" can be accomplished if the will is there. Thank You for being You.

Laurie H,Yes Hope is in the picture, hasn't she really changed?? Now has her true colors back and has gained over 400 lbs since Dec.

Little Laurie is the princess there, is a fast learner but also a stubborn streak!! She will be entered into a horse show in August for foals (confirmation) as they think she will be ready and kick butt as she has the look and a nice body!

You will have more pictures tomorrow! They sent me around 30 of them!

This is from the DB. There is a thread under Horseracing called "Please Help Make Racing Safer for Horses". A group of members has each taken different racetracks across the country and they are monitoring them. Their results are also on the wiki for anyone that is interested. I've copied a post from that thread - and the poster has included a link to a magazine article. I found the article really disturbing. Here is her post:

Found an interesting article on my home track this am.... for those
