    Barbaro Updates: 338

    updates are now here.

Update 2205: Real Lace did not fire this afternoon, and perhaps turf racing is not her game. She sat close to the slow early pace and when it was time to quicken, which she should have been able to do off such a pace, she flattened out. Oh well, time to regroup and perhaps look at other options for her.

Update 2204: Rags to Riches was pulled up in her scheduled work today, nothing was found to be amiss when she was looked over afterwards: Rags to Riches pulled up during workout, excerpt:

"Lauren said she started off the breeze and something didn't feel right so she pulled her up," Pletcher said. "I don't know if she stepped on something. . . . But we got over there she was fine, we got her back [to the barn] she's fine.

"Classify it as a head-scratcher, I guess," Pletcher added. "I just don't know."

Update 2203: Funny story, as I was getting ready to leave for DC I went to check my e-mail for directions. It turns out my DC trip is not for another week, so I am now unretired for a week.

Real Lace is running at Philadelphia Park this afternoon with Victor Molina aboard.

Update 2202: A lovely morning this morning here at Fair Hill. I did not go in to ride today, my first day post Fair Hill! I did go over to Michael Dickinson's farm and interviewed Michael for about an hour for my book. Very interesting perspective on Barbaro and horse racing in general. I then swung back via Fair Hill to interview Eduardo Hernandez, Barbaro's groom. I asked Eduardo a couple of questions and asked him to answer in Spanish. It will be a while before I know what he said. I did interview Michael Matz a couple of days ago, so I only have one more interview to conduct (Kathy Anderson) and I think I will be good to go for a while.

My current plan is to be in Washington DC for next week, come back to Fair Hill next weekend and then head off on my travels while writing a book. I will launch a new site sometime over the next week which will look and act much like this site has done, and on top of racing will document my travel, which I am planning to be from one racetrack to the next across America. I will return this site to Tim. All the while I will work with Tim to make sure this site and the new site work well (I hope).

Update 2201: Racing media coverage of three key races yesterday:

    CCA Oaks:
    Octave scores in CCA Oaks
Octave Scales New Heights in CCA Oaks
Octave a star pupil in Coaching Club American Oaks

    Virginia Derby:
    Red Giant upsets Virginia Derby
Red Giant Casts Pletcher's Shadow in Virginia Derby
Red Giant sets track record in Virginia Derby

    San Diego Handicap:
Sun Boat flies late in San Diego
Sun Boat Wins San Diego With Clear Sailing
Sun Boat rallies to win San Diego Handicap

Update 2200: A nice win by Octave, and not unexpected as the 1-2 favourite. Third place finisher Folk ran a nice race hanging tough to about the sixteenth pole. For those watching the telecast you will have noted Michael Dickinson congratulating Jeannine on her birthday, this explains: Happy Birthday to You! I am interviewing Michael Dickinson tomorrow for my book.

Update 2199: Racing is on at 4pm on ESPN. Prefect Drift has sustained an injury and may be retired: Injury could end Perfect Drift's career.

Update 2198: A lovely morning this morning for my final morning at Fair Hill ... bitter sweet. A few FOBs also came out, which was nice. First out was Fortuna, she went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a half. She galloped nicely, Tim was on the dirt track jogging Real Lace. Second out I was on Linda's Pistol and Tim was on Quick Quest, we worked them together on the Tapeta track, 5/8ths. Pistol worked fine but Quick Quest looked great coming down the lane. Next out was Mass Romantic, my last to the track. She came to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile. She went very nicely. Last out was Kitty, she went with her usual companion, the Two Punch 2yo (with Robbie Walsh) and we went out to the fields for a nice easy day. A nice way to end the morning!

Update 2197: Some decent racing around the country today. Octave heads the New York headliner, the CCA Oaks, which obviously lost its marquee horse when Rags to Riches pulled out (Octave a formidable presence in CCA Oaks). ESPN is broadcasting (update 2195). At Colonial Downs Circular Quay makes his first start on the Turf (Summer Doldrums, Strike a Deal rematch at Colonial). If you need to know how strong Todd Pletcher's barn is all horses mentioned so far are his. On the west coast Buzzards Bay returns on the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar (Buzzards Bay enjoys racing on Southern California synthetics).

Prolific sire, Woodman, was euthanized on thursday: Woodman Euthanized at Age 24.

    ### Laurie H

I just read last night's posts. I am so happy you chose Montego. When you told me about her a few weeks ago I knew she was the one you were supposed to have..I'm glad you changed your mind about not getting her and listened to the whisper.

    ### The famblee came together yesterday, so many names I had not seen in a long time. For the first time in a long time, the famblee's love was united and you could feel Barbaro's presence in every post.

I caught glimpses of him all day yesterday, flashes of brown in my corner vision and felt the swish of his mane and tail across my face and arms. Yes, I would tell him, I know, I know, I read your frens from long ago coming back to tell you how much they love you. He was proud and happy and shaking his mighty head, pawing the ground with his hoof..
He still leads the Barbaro Nation and wants us to stay together and do his work . That's what he told me, so that's what we must do.

    I Believe.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, if today is your final day at Fair Hill, may it be filled with sunshine & good rides. Do you plan to adjourn to "The Whip" for a Tetley with your colleagues? Enjoy your evening, if you do head out for some well-deserved fun & frolic! Peace & good wishes from Robyn, Brent, & Nikita (the horse-loving Husky)

    #### To Laurie H.: Congrats about Montego and I am glad to hear your good report about Bart last PM.
To Otherlyn: A BEAUTIFUL installment of the saga...
To Lisa Leach: How are your sweet boxers doing these days? Nikita heard me come down to the 1st floor and now she is ensconed on the sofa, watching the river, just like in the good old days when I would check for the phrase "ACN".
To Harriette: So grand that Barbaro's presence touched your yesterday! ****

    CHAPTER UPDATE !!!

"ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE..." Chap 15 is on the DB under BARBARO thread.

The white mare, then spoke in words:

"The good and the bad of the otherplace often fades in the peace of Thisgoodplace, but Love stays. Love is always remembered, with songs and honor."

"You, and the Love of your Frens, will always be a part of our song.

...for all who are left, betrayed, and forgotten, the Love of the Frens of the Great Prince, is their only comfort.

Love follows Love, Great Prince, and you are its touchstone. Someday, the peace of Thisgoodplace will find its way to your Frens."

" I tell you now, for THEIR hearts to know:

The 400 did not feel pain as they stepped into the blood. Angels came to hold them. Your frens DID save them."

    Dear Frens,

They are only a thought away. Enjoy the story. It is a gift of comfort.

The weekend, when many of us have a little more time, is a very good time to make your calls and leave VoiceMail at the offices of the Legislators.

Send lots of e-mail too. Yes?

God speed OCTAVE today. I have been watching her since summer of '06. She is a great filly, and quite beautiful too.

    Lord, please keep them safe.

Tim, Thank You. Alex, Thank You. Frens, Thank You.

    Loving you all.

Good morning all ( from a very, very soggy UK)

Two months rainfall in one day (not where I live thankfully), so racing is disrupted today and some of the trainers in Lambourn are awash. I hope the horses are coping.

Thank you to everyone for all the brilliant posts yesterday. Good to see old names reappear and some lovely poems.
    ### Pamela, thanks for a wonderful dollop of nostalgia.
###BobbieB. I hope Nick the Arabian is hanging on in there. Thank you for the invitation (you too Robyn), I'd love to get over the pond and visit.
###Joan Roya. Thank you for the list. I have often thought the FOB names could be incorporated into a list-type poem (a la Adrian Henry) and you can substitute them for the lyrics of 'We didn't light the fire' by Billy Joel.

    ### OK Liz,
You just re-enforced my mental image of "umbrellas in London."
..it's still a pretty picture. I hope the sun peaks at you soon.

    g'morning~
it really hit this morning...I realized that the 'normal routine' (check in here each morning) is going to be different.
I don't know why it just hit, but it did. I was going to say I'd miss y'all, but I'm hoping not to- I'm hoping everyone sticks around.

Here's to a great Saturday and may they all come home safe!

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Maybe just this - there is no such thing as coincidence; everything happens for a reason. And what we put of ourselves out into the world, good or bad, is what will be returned to us. Alex and Tim, in your cases especially, I know there will be many, many blessings to come.

    Best to all, always.

I am a "Silent One," but for the moment I will be vocal. Many thanks to Tim for hosting this site and Alex for "web-mastering" our occasionally fractious yet always devoted famblee. Best wishes to you both.

To read the Comments yesterday was a joy. I hope the new site will embody the spirit, commitment, and sense of obligation to a common goal that was present here yesterday. Barbaro taught us how to live with dignity while enjoying every precious moment, relishing the good and fighting the bad with equal vigor. Let's take that lust for life and the challenges it gives us to the new site.

Borrowing a bit from the Navajo Healing Chant- thank you Harriette- (just one of the wonderful things I have learned here these many months):

...Being as it used to be long ago, may we walk.
May it be beautiful before us.
May it be beautiful behind us.
May it be beautiful below us.
May it be beautiful above us.
May it be beautiful all around us.
    In beauty it is finished.
    In beauty it is finished...

And in beauty may it continue in our new home.

Thank you, Alex. Thank you, Tim.

This has been an amazing journey. We are all embarking on a new chapter built on this emotional bond and the opportunity for hope and awareness Barbaro provided.

Looking forward to more from you, Alex. Will keep checking in on Tim and the wonderful horses in his charge. Thank you for your large part in this, Tim. Alex, I wish you all wonderful things -- this truly changed your life and ours. I have very emotional memories of everything we shared here, whether posting or just reading, and all the updates on Barbaro, Fair Hill , Tim and the horses, all of it . . . Thank you.

It will always be ACN for Barbaro, with hooves that are whole and strong, with a bright eye and majestic spirit, and with NO hitch in his giddyap.

    Thank you all.

It has been a real pleasure sharing the last 14 months with you all. Time to move forward, which is a good thing (I think). I will be there with bells on, wherever "there" ends up being...

    # Morning all. The trip down memory lane yesterday was very special. As someone posted previously, I think it's hard to imagine TWR no longer being our home base because it is where we shared Barbaro's life. Relocating to a new place accenuates that Barbaro is no longer with us on earth. But he lives on in our hearts, and home is where the heart is.

I bet Alex is out shopping for a super duper cyber RV so he can take us all with him on his road trip!

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

    Good morning all,

To all of those who participated in Alex's "little black address book", I wanted to let you know that the book was delivered to Alex yesterday morning. Thank you all for participating. It was a remarkable response, and it was a pleasure to converse with so many of you. I was particularly pleased to hear from so many who called themselves "lurkers" and "silent ones". I had some lovely conversations with them, and I hope that we will hear from them soon. They are not "silent", I can tell you that. They are doing remarkable work, and I thank each and every one of them for what they do each day.

Within the address book, I enclosed a letter to Alex which I took the liberty of signing from us all. I was not able to share the letter with everyone before it was delivered to Alex for obvious reasons. I did want to share it with one other person, at least, and so I did. Now that the book and letter have been delivered, though, I have been asked to share the letter. Alex, if you are reading this, and have actually cracked the book and read the letter, might I ask that you post the letter for all in whose name it was written to read. Thank you, Alex, and thank you all for your absolutely remarkable response!!

Pennsylvanians, are you willing to be a voice for Barbaro? Will you help us end horse slaughter and inhumane transportation for good?

There are 4 or 5 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and assist in strategically targeting our PA Senator and Reps. We are now 52 strong, but we need help winning over the remaining legislators from PA who have not co-sponsored. If you are willing to join our team effort email me at Lor's Email Addy.

    OUR HORSES NEED YOUR HELP!

A few minutes each day for our Horses it not much to ask…is it?

It's here. The end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Thank you Alex and Tim for giving us a place to meet and share our thoughts, hopes, and memories.

cyn, I believe the same thing "there is no such thing as coincidences"-- we were pulled here and found a home for the heart.

This has been quite a journey not only for us but for the people around us. I have seen the rolling of the eyes of my family whenever I spoke of the sight (never Barbaro-they're not that stupid, they know Greatness when they see it) but then the other night, one of the eye rollers (my husband) said you know you guys are like the people at Woodstock-you've started a movement.
May the movement continue. Be safe Alex traveling. Linda Hulett

    # The following is dedicated to Laurie H - who is about to become a horse mommy!

Ten Ways To Get In Shape To Own A Horse

Drop a heavy steel object on your foot. Don't pick it up right away. Shout "Get off, stupid! Get off!"

Leap out of a moving vehicle and practice "Relaxing into the fall". Roll lithely into a ball, and spring to your feet!

Learn to grab your checkbook out of your purse/pocket and write out a $200 check without even looking down.

Jog long distances carrying a halter and holding out a carrot. Go ahead and tell the neighbors what you're doing. They might as well know now.

Affix a pair of reins to a moving freight train and practice pulling it to a halt. And smile as if you are really having fun.

Hone your fibbing skills. "See hon, moving hay bales is fun!" and " I'm glad your lucky performance and multi-million dollar horse won you first place - I'm just thankful that my hard work and actual ability won me second place".

Practice dialing your chiropractors number with both arms paralyzed to the shoulder, and one foot anchoring the lead rope of a frisky horse.

Borrow the US Army slogan; "Be all that you can be'...(add) bitten, thrown, kicked, slimed, trampled."

Lie face down in the mud in your most expensive riding clothes and repeat to yourself: "This is a learning experience, this is a learning experience,..."

    Marry Money!

It's an unusually mild (64!) and non-humid, clear, sparkling July day here in St. Louis. Alex, I hope your last day at Fair Hill is as beautiful. I hope the foxes, geese, and deer come out to bid you farewell from a swirl of ground mist (and without spooking your mounts).

Sara NC- LOL!LOL!LOL! I LOVED reading your 'rules of horse ownership'....and will share with Horsemommy!

I have an older pair of light blue jeans I wear when I go to 'play' with Mister and Rosie. ..and T-Shirts...I ALWAYS come home soooooooo dirty...Horsemommy seems to stay SO clean?? I always notice that, but never take the time to observe how she stays clean :/ I'm too busy getting dirty!

The flies were biting Mister just terribly recently and Horsedaddy put purple medicine on him...as I was giving Mister his last of the 'goodbye' lovings....I realized I was pretty much COVERED in purple....and my yellow T-Shirt had 'alotsa' purple allllll over it!! I was told it might not wash out...I didn't care one bit..'cause I think yellow and purple are great colors together:)

I come away looking alot like Pigpen...wasn't he a character in the Peanuts comic strip?? But you know...I wear alllll that dirt PROUDLY:) Smiling allll the way home! I hit my front door looking as though I've been rolling in the dirt...and I won't wash my hands right away, 'cause I just want to keep smelling those two big ole horseys as long as I can:)

So far, I've not been stepped on...and I don't have to hang onto a lead rope, because I come armed with baby carrots and they follow me EVERYWHERE....I DO however, sometimes, need to pick up my stride so I don't get 'runned over'..lol!

I am SO happy for Laurie H. and Montego...:) That little girlie has found her way into the "Tuck In" home....wanna bet she will be wearing a green cashmere horsey blanket?? Wanna bet Miss Laurie will be having "slumber parties" with Montego on a somewhat regular basis:):):) I only hope someday I will be fortunate enough to have a horsey of my very own, too!!!

By the way...the purple medicine washed out of the yellow shirt just fine:) Spray & Wash is a GREAT pre-wash spray...

Everyone have a great day today....

    Good morning, all -

Foggy here on the central coast of California this morning, and a bit humid, as well, but that will pass as soon as the onshore breeze starts up. I need to go walk the dogs, but had to stop and say hello to all, and thank everyone for the wonderful party yesterday. Wow! And, had to go out last night to hunt for tile for a bathroom surround, so missed the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING news that Laurie H became the mommy of a filly! Congratulations and every wish for happiness to all. That is one lucky filly!

Safe trips and wings on their heels to all running this weekend, and spare a thought on Sunday for a lovely chestnut named Doc, (well, his OFFICIAL name is Doctor Doctor MRMD), who will be running at Lone Star Park in Texas. Our own LynsWins, who was involved in organizing a fundraiser for Sadie's operation, got me plugged into Doc's story, as he is owned by a friend of hers. I have one of Doc's horseshoes, and am now one of his fans. So keep a good thought for this beautiful boy.

    ###
Otherlyn - How beautiful is the White Mare's vision! Thank you...
dee mirich - I love the Beth Moore quote - and agree! It's the journey that counts...
    ###
And, a few other names - how in the WORLD could I forget...

cyn, CarolB, MJ, Karen PA, chris byers, Vonda, Linda Hulett, Susan in Hawaii...

and there are, of course, many, many more that I cannot locate, scrawled, as the names are, on tiny pieces of paper that I'm always just about to add to a coherent list. Ah, me.

It has been an extremely emotional 14 months--so many tears, smiles and cheers as well. It has been a pleasure reading this site everyday.

I wish you the best, Alex. Thank you is not saying enough for all you have done. Thank you Tim. For you guys were the inside track to beautiful Barbaro.

I will carry on in Barbaro's name--for him. I will continue to fight for all horses and a cure for laminitis. I am here in for the long haul. I have always been here and I will continue to be here or wherever.

    Thank you, everyone.

Bittersweet indeed! No further comment from me on the topic at this time. I'm confident the spirit of this place will envelop us wherever we gather to do BARbaro's work. (capitalization unintentional and giving me MAJOR goosebumps, folks . . . )

Safe ride to all today - details please on Shelley A's entry - is it Alibi today? I've been so entrenched in the HS work and making music that I haven't been following the races . . . except to see that RAgs --- OY that capitalization wasn't consciously intentional either . . . OK here's what I came here to post this morning before heading for the Post Office and the health food store.

(btw - how does a health nut commit suicide? By cutting down on their vitamins.) Love to all who love horses and life - I assume that's everyone here. CJ

    Re-post

    Laurie H.,

So you're getting a horse!!! Congratulations, you life is about to change in a very miraculous way!

Ah, I am so easily drawn in to these discussions! Yes, the Missouri Foxtrotters have a natural gait. Ignorant people have tried to exaggerate that gait by using devices or "soring". If there is any evidence of such things these people are not allowed to enter a horseshow, etc. and are usually reported to animal abuse authorities. When I was growing up around horses I heard about this with someone so I am sensitive about it. But, I think congress actually got off their butt and passed a law that "soring" a horse to make him do certain things was illegal. Now, one would think that if "soring" a horse is illegal why isn't horse slaughter!

    Blessings,
    Bonnie

Posted by Bonnie MacRaith at July 21, 2007 6:02 AM

Right on, perceiving these issues as part of the same cloth.

Hey everybody - guess what? The federal law against "soring" just happens to be the very American Horse Protection Act, to which HR 503/S 311 is an Amendment. I didn't realize it either, until I looked at the actual AHPA and the proposed Amendment in context in preparation for my visit with my Rep's District Director; John Holland steered me right. Take at look here for more detail and links to both the original anti-soring law and the Amendment that we are trying to get enacted:

Today is my Father's birthday He would have been 95 today. He was a great horseman. Talk about starting as an adult - he first got on a horse and took his first riding lessons along with me in the early 50's when I was 9 and he was in his 40's. He loved his horse Midnight (retired Saddlebred bought from Arthur Konyot's Chicago riding establishment) more than anything. Also played the violin. The family story was that the only reason my mother married my father although he wasn't Hungarian, was that he played the violin.

Horses and music. My father's legacy.

    Good morning, all!

I'm so sorry about Nick the Arabian. And very happy for Laurie H. and her Montego. Life is a cycle of tragedy and triumph, despair and happiness. At any given time we're either on the "down" or "up", kind of like a carousel ride. Poor Nick will be welcomed by Barbaro into a beautiful new world. Some day we'll all be there too.

Alex and Tim, what a ride we've had with you. Alex, in a way I am glad you won't be risking life and limb out there anymore. I can only add my best wishes for success and happiness in all your endeavors. I'll be in line to buy your book, too!

Gosh, the tears are just falling. How I wish in a way we could turn back time to a year ago, when Barbaro had improved enough that soon (August 11th?) he could go outside and graze. Big boy, I will always love you. What an amazing inspiration you have been. Yes, you helped us start a movement. And it won't end. We will see Cavhell shut down, once and for all. We WILL see this federal legislation passed. We WILL help find a cure for laminitis. And many more FOBs will be hands-on with horses, to give them loving forever homes. It's all part of your legacy.

Everything humanly possible was done. He had an airconditioner, and a sling, and fluids, the works, not to mention, our prayers and love. He had some good times at the end, and I know he knew he was loved. So sad . . . makes me wanna be an activist - oh - I already am! Howbowchoo?

FOR ALEX AND EVERYONE AT FOB NATION ...

It's been a very "long and winding road" that has led us to here, where we are at this very moment in time.

We have gone through more with each other than most "real" families do, even at a distance of thousands of miles between each other.

Some days have been very very good ...
Some days have been very very bad ...
Some days have given us smiles ...
While others have made us so sad ...
    We have laughed uncontrollably ...
    We have wept incessantly ...
We have been give hope beyond our wildes dreams ...
We have been disappointed beyond all measure of description ...
We have endured at times ...
We have hung on by a thread at times ...
We have hugged each other ...
We have cried with each other ...
We have angered one another ...
Yet we have loved one another ...
    We are individuals ...
    We are a team ...
    We are unique ....
We are the Fans of Barbaro!!!

Good Luck with Alexander's Travels, Alex Brown ... thank you for this "home and hearth" that we have all shared and which has given us so much comfort when "Home Was a Wounded Heart." We will never forget you or Tim Woolley Racing and the part you have played in our lives when thoughts were scattered, hearts were shattered and souls were tattered ... having this "home" was really all that ever mattered, beyond the personalities and beyond the pale. Thank You!!

And I can't help but think of these lyrics right now which kind of brings it all full circle, at least for me ... and this is for you, especially, Alex ...

    The long and winding road
    That leads to your door
    Will never disappear
    I've seen that road before
    It always leads me here
    lead me to your door.

    The wild and windy night
    That a rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
    Crying for the day.
    Why leave me standing here?
    Let me know the way.

    Many times I've been alone
    And many times I've cried,
    Anyway you've never known
    The many ways I've tried.

But still they lead me back
    To the long, winding road
    You left me waiting here
    A long, long time ago
    Don't keep me waiting here
    Lead me to your door.

But still they lead me back
    To the long winding road
    You left me waiting here
A long, long time ago (ohhh)
    Don't leave me waiting here
    Lead me to your door.
    #####################

Lead Us to your Door wherever the Long and Winding Road takes you ...

Peace and Love to All ....

    Hello Fambleeee

Tim, thank you so much for your graciousness, and some day I WILL be there to watch the morning workouts. Will continue to follow you and the site and the wonderful horses training at Fair Hill. Thanks is not enough, and this is not goodbye, but see you soon, dear friend.

Alex, I'm going to miss your mornings at Fair Hill. Your writings always give such a lovely visual, and take me back to my very early years. I spent so many days imagining myself to be a jockey ( Marydel and Laura will laugh at this ), fastening my irons as short as they'd go, galloping along with my knees holding fast to my dear Angel's shoulders, ( Gina would have no part in the imaginary derby, Angel was always good for a gallop ) and I was SO there. EVeryone at the stable got a good laugh as well, but to me, we were CHAMPIONS. Thank you for being so generous, sharing such a lovely part of your life, and for taking me back to a lovely part of mine. Again, not goodbye, but thank you for leading us through this episode, and looking forward to the next. And if you ever find your way to Denver, which we dearly hope you will, you'll never have to buy yourself a meal :)

Am so sad to hear of Nick's passing. I awoke this morning knowing he'd gone into the light. Can't explain how I knew, but I knew. Theresa is an angel on earth, and I know she is heartbroken, as are all of us who hoped and prayed that this noble Arabian Prince would be healed. He tried so hard. Once again I am distraught and angry and wishing for vengence for those who would be so cruel to this gentle, kind boy. He showed such gratitude to those who loved him, and was so gracious, I imagine that he never had a moment of fear nor did he question the motives of those who were cruel to him. He was that kind of boy. Run free, Nicki boy. Beautiful Arabian Prince. Run to Barbaro, whole, sleek and fleet, and we'll listen for your hoofbeats across the clouds. See you in hevvin, dear Nicki boy. Your Aunty Cheryl loves you soooooooooooooooo much.

Will check in later Love to all

    FOR LINDA VA ...

Thanks for the "heads up" regarding the CBS coverage of the VA Derby and footage of Meadow Farm, the home of "Big Red!!!" I will be skipping back and forth between CBS and ESPN for coverage of the CCA Oaks!!

    And, MIKE C ...

Speaking of the CCA Oaks and your comment that Rags might be DUCKING Octave in this race, I don't think that's the case because if Ragszy was running today, Octave would NOT be since she just ran and won the Mother Goose on June 30th. As you know, my friend, Pletcher doesn't usually race his horses so frequently with just a 3 week layoff, but because Ragszy had to pull out, he then decided to race Octave instead because she's training very well even with the short turnaround.

Don't you worry about Ragszy, Mike ... just tune in on August 18 to The Alabama!!! Then we can talk!!! LOLOLOL

I don't normally post here, only on the DB, but I wanted to express some of my feelings on this day...

Today, is the end of an era, so to speak, and the beginning of a new. Today is a mix of melacholy and excitement for what's to come.

Foremost, I want to thank Tim for so gratiously allowing us into his "home" and allowing us to become a family, disfuncational at times (what family isn't) but a family none-the-less.

Alex, I look forward to hearing your new adventures on our "new home." Thank you for all you have done. Not only bringing so many people together but educating them along the way; whether they are newbies to racing, slaughter, rescue, those who are already well versed in these subjects or those who just wanted updates on Barbaro and continued to stay. I am continually amazed by the things I learn as well as the warm and caring people I have met.

So with that said... my "bags are packed and I'm ready to set up my new home" when Alex has it ready. As I reflect on my time on this site, I have to say it's been one heck of a ride.

    Thanks again Tim and Alex.

I read on DB about the need for TWR to go back to what it was intended for, and this makes me sad too.
It brings to mind how we all started here last May, how we became the family/famblee we are today. The so-called cyber friendships forged here, are some that are bonded deep as those formed in real life situations. We will have each other to rely upon for years to come.

Alex and Company has made this all possible. With the aid of this site we have as a group saved and rescued horses and made a name for ourselves. A name that will be remembered as those FANS that became FANS OF BARBARO.
We are The House That Barbaro Built.

Prayers for all creatures great and small

THIS IS THE HOUSE THAT BARBARO BUILT

Alex, Eliza, Tim,& Jen brought us the foundation to build this house.

The Jackson's gave us the brick, the strongest ever made-BARBARO.

    Eduardo kept the brick clean.

Mr. Matz & Peter shaped the brick.

Mr. Prado saved the brick from completely breaking when it fell.

    Dr. Richardson repaired the brick.

The brick WAS HELD together and new mortar was added-FOBs.

The brick was decorated by Kennett Florist.

A VERY strong HOUSE was built.

WE ARE THE HOUSE THAT BARBARO BUILT
    WE SHALL NOT FALL DOWN
    WE HAVE THE STRONGEST SUPPORT
    The FOUNDATION is still STRONG

    WE are STILL HERE
    WE WILL ALWAYS BE HERE
WE SHALL NOT BE TORN APART.

I am so sorry about Nick. However, he passed to the rainbow bridge knowing he was so loved and cared for. I have been watching several news stations (fox, cnn. etc) and they are showing live pictures of the dog fights which is good. I wish there could be live pictures of the horses being so cruely killed on the slaughter floors. I wish Senator Byrd could speak before the house and senate and show pictures of the horses being killed. See you on the new web site.

How do we thank you Alex for all you have given us this past year ??? You opened so many doors for us with regard to horse issues. You enabled us to come together as a family to rally behind Barbaro. We gave our love to him and he gave us so much more in return. Thank you for that opportunity. You allowed us to share morning work outs and views from the backside of racing. You gave us so many opportunities to grow in our knowledge of the racing industry. You also helped many of us become more computer literate through this site.

Because of you, we, as Fans of Barbaro, have been able to many good things for the horses in the name of Barbaro. Thank you.

What a ride this has been, Alex. We owe you so much, but, for now our sincere love and gratitude will have to do.

May you never run out of adventures. Be safe. Wherever you go you will have an entourage, the FOBs with you in spirit. I think these words from two of my favorite people say what I want to say best.

"Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
    Some trails are happy ones,
    Others are blue.
It's the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here's a happy one for you."

    ####Nancy in CT ...

I am just a "plain old musical fanatic" ... love it all from Neil to The Beatles to "Just Paul" to "Bruuuuuuuuuuuuce" and now I've segued into country and I "adore" Kenny Chesney!!! And I'm also dabbling a little into Bon Jovi ... where have I been all these years!!! In my opinion, there's a lyric to express every thought, every emotion, every feeling in any and every moment of "life." It fills the soul, warms the heart and nourishes the spirit.

    So, yes, absolutely a fanatic!!
    ###################

I also want to 'thank' everyone for putting up with my endless posts about Secretariat on a Barbaro board, but for me, they are inextricably entwined, never to be separated in heart and soul, and when I think of one, I automatically think of the other. Secretariat was 'first' ... he will always be 'first' and Barbaro isn't second by any means ... he's separate but equal.

You can just imagine how I felt when I learned of the beautiful Secretariat/Barbaro print being offered to aid in laminitis research ... my heart soared knowing and believing that these two "Best Buds" gave their unequivocal agreement and acceptance to be "together" as part of "Memories of Greatness." I know they are up there in EH and Gretchen Jackson's words ring in my ears to this very day:

"At least he's out of his damn stall and running around with Secretariat."

    AMEN!!!

I just hope that Bobby is "Best Equine" for Red and Ruffian's October nuptials!!!
    #####################

TO LAURIE H ... Laurie I just now read that you will be getting a Missouri Foxtrotter horse of your very own. How does one separate 'envy' from sheer happiness in the same breath?? I had no knowledge of this until I just read yesterday's posts ... words can't express how very happy I am for you, Laurie, but I am also extreeeeeeeemely jealous, too! LOL ... But in a very very good way. "Montego" cannot have a more loving, caring, devoted "Mommy" than you! And the Nightly Tuck-ins will be very "up close and personal." Congratulations to you and your family on such an exciting and welcomed "addition"!!!

You just want want to check your local listings for this because the CCA Oaks will air on ESPN from 4-5, but in my area, the VA Derby will air on CBS from 5-6, making it possible to watch both in their entirety ... so please check your own schedules to confirm the times where you live.

OH God, Jean .... I ALSO remember "Montego Bay" ... we must be the same 'age' ... LOL

But I just learned something very interesting about how to share one's age ... instead of saying "I AM 25 or 35 or 45 or ??? years", simply state I HAVE 25 or 35 or ??? years" ... this implies that you have ???? years of wisdom, education, insight, love to share. So, the more years you 'HAVE', the more years you also HAVE of these wonderful components that make up a well-lived life.

    Dear Alex and Tim,

It is with heartfelt gratitude I write a final post. Having somehow found 'this-good-place' after Barbaro's win at the Kentucky Derby, I have mainly 'lurked' here, reading with such keen interest, the most valuable and fascinating writings; first, the daily reports from Alex of Barbaro's condition; then from FsOB- a compilation of the most inspirational and loving tributes to 'our' beloved horse; and, finally, the ongoing vital, incredible work and devotion to rescue, to stop slaughter, to help fund research for laminitis, to help aid injured jockeys and to promote better racetrack safety.

Thank you for providing this God-sent place to begin and take such a journey.

I first posted here when my beloved horse, Keystone, had to be euthanized at the age of 26- we had been together for 21 years! In my sadness I came to the FsOB and recieved such comfort- I knew nowhere else would people be more understanding than this dear group of animal loving souls.

This is a famblee that will continue to accomplish truly miraculous things; no matter how small or significant a part each of us plays, we are making history for the love of horses. That must give each of us a great deal of pride and sense of satisfaction as we move to the next chapter of the story of the Barbaro Nation.

So, again, thank you Tim and Alex for this wonderful beginning point and home for so many months.

Fondest regards to all- "Til we meet again".

    #####Kathleen and Theresa
I am sending out waves of love and comfort to both Theresa who lost beautiful Nick this morning, and to Kathleen who lost Cowboy earlier this week. How lucky, lucky, lucky those two boys were to find these amazing women and people who poured their hearts into the care and love of these two totally diminished equine souls.

God, my heart aches, but I know You will lead them gently together, unused yet to their beautiful, sleek new bodies and healthy spirits to drink from Your pure mountain streams. And then, God, let them rest together....and when they awaken, let them send their love down to Kathleen and Theresa.

What heartache. What passion for life. Love triumphed over evil--if only for a little while...they died in the arms of love, not in starvation, not in slaughter...and to Nick and Cowboy, this was all that mattered.

Hugs from jonna and many greyhounds, the the legions of greyhounds in Heaven...

LINNIE - I believe DF will be too old to be KD material next year...he was born in '04, although I couldn't find the month/day. But you know it's all about that "they were all born on January 1st, no matter when they were REALLY born" stuff that I still don't quite "get."

Posted by: Nancy in CT at July 21, 2007 9:37 PM

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I am reflecting. I remember last year when I posted, all I wanted for my birthday was for B to make it. All any of us wanted was for him to make it. My family was here, and I wanted to hurry up with everything, so I could get back on the board.... The thought made me reflect on his birthday, and my post from that day. We had a vigil for him, remember?

    Vigil in 8 minutes

Four years ago today a horse was born whose spirit would awaken and touch the deepest places in the hearts of many - he represents The Spirit of The Horse.

3 months ago today, Barbaro left his physical form - but Barbaro is not dead - he lives inside each one of us. His form has changed, but his spirit remains the same - just allow yourself to feel him - he is there in your heart. His spirit is the reason most of you are on this board.

The spirit of this Mighty Warrior Horse was always larger than his physical body! His spirit is what called us to this place - his spirit is what awakened our awareness for The Spirit of The Horse - his spirit is why we continue our work for all horses.

I believe there are lessons to learn from Barbaro and his time here - and I believe his sacrifice will not go in vain. Many of us will continue to raise awareness for the Spirit of The Horse. Awareness for all of the horses - the slaughter-bound horse, the rescue horse, and for the racehorse. God bless each one of us on our way. Thank you Barbaro. The day of your birth is a day to celebrate - your presence has awakened many.

My dear friend, you continue to be the best teacher I have ever had. It is an honor to stand with you.....

    I love you forever horse

BIG QUESTION FOR ANYONE WHO REMEMBERS LAFFIT PINCAY ...

When I first turned on CBS's coverage and they showed the two hosts, the name for the male host was Laffit Pincay, but can this be 'THE' Laffit Pincay? This guy looks too young to be THAT jockey.

Also, I thought that Pincay was not of American heritage, but the one on TV speaks perfect English with no accent at all. He's definitely too young, I would think to be the famous jockey ...

LaurieH, I am SOOOO sorry I missed last night. I had to go to bed early because Alex asked us to come to Fair Hill early (and it was a beautiful morning and day at Fair Hill.).

You know I fell in LOOOOOOVE with Montego when you sent me her picture. You know I felt she was meant to be with you...and I am VERY HAPPY that you decided to listen to her. She is going to give you so much joy, open your heart.

LaurieH, I have a short message from Luke...will e-mail it in just a sec.

    ###
We had a fantastic day at Fair Hill today. The weather could not have been more perfect. Along with Donna and Barbara, we had a delightful fourth person...Denise, who I had met at FH back in February. I was hoping I would meet up with her again since her face just gets so radiant around the horses.

Real Lace saw me coming even before I walked into the barn. She was watching me and I felt her joy in my mind. She was great...as always. Fortuna, Red Aspen, Quick Quest and the six horses at the other end (I forget the owner's name, but he showed us all six of the horses.)

We met a sweet man named George Gilbert who stops by Tim's barn two or three times a week and follow's Tim's horses when they race. Red Aspen LOVES him and while we were with her, she let me do direct hands-on work on her...just above her right hip. I was nearly in tears.

There's more, but I don't want to take up too much more bandwidth. It was an amazing day.

    Gator Nation looked great.

Real Lace (Lacie Girl), run with the wind and come home safely tomorrow. I love you so much sweet one.

LaurieH, you are now Montego's Mom...and I'm loving that idea. Please give Bart LOTS of hugs.

I am also so saddened to hear about Nick. I was sending to him last night and he couldn't hang on...

Now to start reading Harry Potter.

Alex, hope you enjoy all the cards. I had so much fun receiving everything this past week. To those who sent me those beautiful letters, thank you so much for your kindness.

Donna and Barbara, so happy to meet you. Denise, it was a joy to see you again...hope you feel better soon.

    OK, I'm in a big quandary ....

I was all set to root for Blazing Dynamo in the VA Derby, but when I saw "Red Giant" on the screen, something inside told me to look up his bloodlines because "Red Giant" reminded me of "Big Red" which means "Secretariat." Sure enough, Red Giant has Big Red lines from Terlingua (if I read chart correctly) ...

Here's the link to his pedigree:

    http://www.pedigreequery.com/red+giant3

Soooo, you know where my loyalty must be on the Secretariat Turf Course with the great great grandson of "Big Red" ...

Can it end in a tie????? Dead Heat with 2 winners? Red Giant AND Blazing Dynamo???

Posted by: Linnie at July 21, 2007 10:39 PM

Thanks, Linda VA ... I knew it couldn't be THAT Laffit Pincay! This one is a hottie!!

LINDA .... RED GIANT RUNNING IN THE VA DERBY ... GREAT GREAT GRANDSON OF BIG RED!!!! HAVE TO ROOT FOR THIS BIG RED CHESTNUT CALLED RED GIANT!!!!

Posted by: Linnie at July 21, 2007 10:43 PM

    Yes Linnie he's Red's great-great grandson.

Posted by: LindaVA at July 21, 2007 10:44 PM

ALSO ROOTING FOR BLAZING DYNAMO TOO, SO IF EITHER WINS I'LL BE HAPPY!!! OR IF THEY COME IN 1-2 IN EITHER ORDER, I'LL BE HAPPY!!!

I will forget a lot of things in the years to come but I will never forget "HERE COMES BARBARO THE UNDEFEATED BARBARO' or "ITS ALL BARBARO IN A SUPLINE PERFORMANCE". Barbaro was never defeated even in death as he still runs and will run forever. See all of you on the new site. Thanks Alex and best wishes.

    11345.94 in reply to 11345.91

Here is some more info on DIamond Fever's win!

He broke from PP 5 and won the race by 1 1/2 lengths. 1:42.96 was the winning time for a 1 1/16th. Caraballo had him well placed up close to the pace. He was 3rd by 1/2 a length by a quarter of a mile. At the half he was 4th by 1 1/2 lengths but outside rivals, so running a bit farther than they were. After 3/4 of a mile he was 4th by 2 lengths but going around the fart turn coming into the stretch at this point, still outside of rivals. AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME!!! (sorry, I had a Dave Johnson moment) Diamond Fever is now challenging for the lead!!! Wheels Up At Noon doesn't want to give up, but he just can't keep up with the great Diamond Fever who now leads the race by half a length!!!! In midstretch Diamond Fever holds on to the lead by a 1/2 length as Wheels Up At Noon just can't keep up, and at the wire its DIAMOND FEVER!!!!!!! His 4th win in a row!!!!!!!!

Sarah, Real Lace is beautiful. I can't get enough of her or Red Aspen or Luke (all of them, actually. I get lost in each of them for different reasons.). Her pictures do not do her justice. I felt her 2 miles from the barn and she was just looking out of her stall watching me when I arrived.

Not to give the other horses any less than they are due...I love them all. They are all so amazing and I love to be around them.

Dear Tim--thank you; thank you for allowing us to be here during the days, during the nights, during the tears, the love, the frays and the fights. Thank you, and may God bless you abundantly throughout your long, long life.

Thank you, Alex--master of understatement, dry wit, spare prose, deliverer of Truth and Fact. Thank you for the updates, the contacts, the up to the minute that brought Barbaro's world to us. And thank you for helping to take us to him.

Thank you Famblee, thank you Frens. Thank you poets, mystics, healers, activists. Thank you storytellers, thank you broken hearts, healing hearts, hard times, good times, thank you for pouring yourselves out into this site, out into the world, out into space. Thank you all who love Barbaro, horses, animals, and people. Thank you for daring, for bravery, for stretching so far beyond comfort that it produced not just pain but anguish--and all for Love and for doing the Right things. Hoofrays and no horse left behind. Another Comfortable Night. Dr. R. Dear Edgar, and Eduardo. It's a mosaic that will take years to sort out, if it can be.

The Fog, Felix, Molasses, Fitch, Buck, Abercrombie, Rosie, BB, Misty, Spirit, and so many, so many--they are all there, all here, but so many I can't put them all in writing. It is the same with all of you: ALL of you--the names, the stories, the pain, the comfort, the love, the acceptance, the falls from grace and the redemptions. All of it because of Barbaro. Barbaro.

A Breyer Barbaro sits on my dining room table. No saddle, no rider. Tail and main flowing, eye keen and intent. Four healthy legs; four healthy feet. This is how I see him; whole; healed; at his best. And I love him, as do all of you here.

And so it is not, as I thought, the Crack of Doom, the End of Times, the forever farewell...there is a passageway opening. It is true, then? That when one door closes, another opens? Thank you for offering hope, and an opening door, Alex. Godspeed and good luck; but then hard work always preceeds "luck".

Barbaro was the ride of Edgar's life. He was and is the ride of all of our lives.

God bless you, Barbaro...we are still here; we still love, we still care. We still get it.

    Love,

    Sue M. Pittsburgh

There is a day I will remember forever: it was a Sunday during the winter. There was snowfall here. There were birds and deer feeding outside my window.

All of us talked; Alex posted, too. It was cozy, it was warm, it was happy and cheerful, and friendship enveloped us all....I believe that I was also enveloped by a glass or two of red wine. But that is beside the point : )Thank you for that day. I remember it as perfect.

Now, in July, so much has happened: my daughter is expecting her first child in January(!!); my mother experienced bleeding behind her right eye--probably macular degeneration. The Frens and Famblee have written beautiful pieces, done incredibly generous and moving good works, talked to Congressional aids, become activists and horse owners.

LINDA VA & LINNIE...oh, dear - I fear we are all exhibiting symptoms of the "Scorpio Syndrome"...and you both know what I mean!

Linda, I added a (paraphrased) song to your thread...

    ###########

Yes I know the SS ... Scorpio Syndrome not to be confused with the SSS ... Secretariat Soul Sisters!!! LOL

    OK #############

ALSO FOR ANYONE WHO KNOWS ...

Why wasn't Diamond Fever "eligible" for any Triple Crown Seasons?

Posted by: Linnie at July 22, 2007 12:53 AM

OK, true confession time...to show you how stupid/uninformed I was before this site and Alex: when I watched Barbaro's Kentucky Derby, I hadn't watched ANY racing since Smarty Jones and before that since Nashua (most of you are too young to remember him). Sooooooo, in the post parade when I saw the pink "blanket" with the #8 on it, I actually said to myself, "OOOOOH, that pink doesn't look good with the colors of the silks!" Hay, give me a little credit - at least I knew the word "silks."

I actually thought that "somebody"...trainer, owner, who knows....picked out the color "blanket" they wanted and I couldn't believe anyone would mix PINK with the Lael colors.

When I was "coerced" into calling races here last summer for people who don't have HRTV or TVG, I discovered that EVERY #8 saddlepad that I saw was pink...just one of the untold things I have learned as a result of discovering this blessed place!

BTW, upper left side of this page - Alex's FAQ section is excellent!!!!

Here's a switch-a-roo. Today on the radio someone was talking about a family in California where the authorities were called in because the family was living in filthy living conditions but their horse was well fed and well taken care of!

Nancy ... I'm proud of you for your "confession" ...

I have sooooooo much to confess that I need a real priest and a confessional ...

Father Alex, forgive me for I have sinned and sinned, and sinned and sinned ... before coming to the TWR site and DB, I didn't know very much about horse racing, saddle blankets, odds, $1 boxes, fractions, furlongs, twelve-clips, breezing, galloping, taking the bit, loosening the reins, leveling out, giving a horse his head (that's a great new addition to my "horsecabulary"),bays, chestnuts, sorrels, and oh so many other 'sins of the Thoroughbred. I'm still not sure exactly what "odds-on" means except I think it means the heavy favorite??????

So, for all these and other sins which I cannot now remember, Father Alex, forgive me.
    ################

    Father Alex:

"My Child you have committed mortal sins of the Triple Crown and TB racing, and I am at a loss as to your penance at this point. First you must make a heartfelt "Act of COLTrition" for all of your transgressions. Then when you leave this confessional, you must say 1 complete "ROSEary" for the Derby leg of the Triple Crown, plus 10 "Prayers of Weakness" for the Preakness Leg, and finally you must run a mile and one half, winning by 31 lengths in 2:24 flat during the month of June for the Belmont Leg of the Triple Crown. Following this, because you have sinned so severely, you must pray at the altar of St. Barbaro for 29 straight hours repeating this refrain: "And Here Comes Barbaro, the Undefeated Barbaro in a Sublime Performance" while clutching your Derby ROSEary.

After you have completed all of this penance ... you must promise to give up your materialistic desire to go from "Rags to Riches" and forever live a life of humility as a "Secretary-at" for the new site of Alexander Brown, whenever and wherever that may be.

If you will do all these things, I absolve you of all sin ... but if you relapse, then ALL BETS ARE OFF AND YOU'LL BE A 100-1 SHOT AT BEST OF GETTING A "COME FROM BEHIND" SPRINT TO THE FINISH LINE!!

I want to add my voice in thanks and appreciation for Tim and Alex. I have held back for the past couple of days because there is so much I want to say that I actually do not know how to say it. Odd huh?
    So.....
Thank you Tim for providing a "home" to the many who fell in love with Barbaro and could not resist to follow his journey. Because of that journey, unforeseen events have occurred. But it all started with a gorgeous bay horse, his connections, and the generosity of you, Tim. Thank you!
Alex- you have given so much to so many. Before Barbaro I would watch the Triple Crown races very casually; always struck by the beauty of the horses.
Now I have an over sized coffee table stacked with books I have read about horses and horse racing. My house is quickly filling up with images of Barbaro and those brown eyes still call me to continue to work in Barbaro's name. Because you thought to post updates, educate us about horse racing, and devote countless hours to maintain this site and the DB, I have found a whole new world.
Thanks does not seem like enough for all that you have given. But from the bottom of my heart....Many Many Thanks! Save journeys... Please know what an impact you have had on many!
    Love to my FOB Famblee....

Hi everyone.......there is a rescue on the DB that needs some help to reach the goal. Just under $2000 to go in next 24hrs.

There are quite a few horses on feedlot, some could be adopted directly, and those funds could then be used to rescue the remaining horses.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Some of the FOBs are donating in honor of Nick, the Arabian horse that died this morning.
    Thanks, Ellie Az.

Posted by: Ellie at July 22, 2007 1:41 AM

Saddle cloths are all the same color so that bettors/spectators can follow their horse around the track. #1 is always red, #2 is always black, etc., so that you can pick out colors around the race track.

My parents owned harness horses when I was a kid, and I learned the color/number corollaries when I was four years old...before I could read!

To answer another question: colts become horses at age 5, and fillies become mares at age 5.

    Cheers!

Your amazement and awe at life! I am very rich for getting to "know" you through this place so many call HOME!
The pictures of my students petting the horses that glorious day....PRICELESS! Pure Joy....
    Smiles..
My principal is always a tad bit suspicious of my brilliant ideas..I wonder why??? That day of the horses' visit..the principal finally strolled away from his office and moseyed outside to make an appearance. The moment was priceless...As the principal stood there..putting his time in...One of the horses looked at him eye-to-eye,a challenge...lifted its tail...and CALLING CARDS...staring at my principal as he registered his thoughts!!
Well...if looks could kill... my principal glared at me and just shook his head.
I fell in love with that horse from that moment on....

I spent about 3 hours with her and her family today and once again, she opened her heart to me. She has a playful side and amuses all of the neighbors. I think I may have a little ham on my hands...

Her family bought her a dog toy a couple of days ago. Fuzzy in the middle and braided "arms" on the side...she throws it around, steps on it, parades it around their pasture. She is very proud of her toys!

Tomorrow I think I will go back and spend more time with her. Her family said that I am welcome to see her any time. I will be calling the boarding place tomorrow to find out when she can arrive.

She is such a doll. She has been surrounded by love her entire young life and everything Good about Montego, I credit to her family. I have made it very clear to them, that they are MORE than welcome to visit her. I hope they take me up on it...

Thank you again every one. I couldn't wait to tell my famblee... Thank you. xxoo

Oh Sweet Laurie:) Did you by chance read a post I left here earlier today? I can't remember time or even to whom I posted it to...but I DID say I betcha Montego will end up with a green cashmere blanket and that you will be enjoying more than just occasional 'slumber parties' with her:)

I will add to my own list of 'wishes' that somehow you might be able to have her at your own property someday...so all you have to do is look out your window and see her...and just walk some steps to her pen/stall...THAT would be SO excellent for you...and your 'girl':)

Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy Laurie H!, spend as much time as you possibly can with her...:) You will LOVE EVERY MOMENT...and your face won't stop SMILING for a long while after you've left to come home again!!! And you won't want to wash your hands right away, either...'cause you'll be able to smell her right there with you:)

Dear Jim, I don't want you to ever feel that I was ignoring you...my silly mama was watching a television program and laughing with her face in a pillow so she wouldn't wake up the two little girls who are right above her bedroom...actually mama was braying like a donkey!

Your daddy was a Persian? This is amazing - my birthmother was a Persian! We don't know anything about my father...the story is that he was a traveling salesman passing through the yard, but I'm not sure what that means. I think it may be adult stuff about the birds and the bees...

I would be delighted to have you call me Maizie...only mama calls me Princess Maizie Lee, because she thinks it sound elegant...I think it sounds a little snobbish, but I humor her once in a while. It's just like my housemate orange tabby Seamus...mama calls him Sir Seamus the Shy, but he's just plain old Seamus to me. And he's not shy, he is the biggest wimp in all of catdom!

You are probably asleep already, but if not then I can say sweet dreams to you...I was sleeping in mama's spot on the bed, which means I had to move again....sometimes that woman forgets who is in charge around here!

    Love,
    Maizie

Yep saw the special about the wild mustangs and how they have proved invaluable in providing access to areas patrolled for drug smugglers. Think it's very interesting they were able to take these wild animals and train them in a very short time. Hope we can use this in the Media Blitz. Plan to contact my congressman who voted against their survival. As time goes by it is interesting to note more and more stories about usual tasks for our beloved equines.

Yes, Margie ... Red Giant reminded me of Ragszy's Belmont win by a "nose bob" and of course, the "original" red giant, Big Red Secretariat. his great, great grandfather. And, Red Giant set a new track record and ran the 1 1/4 mile track in true "Secretariat" fashion, under 2 minutes at 1:59.6!!! He's a beauty and getting better every day under Pletcher who has trained him for his 3rd straight win!!!

Bonnie- thank you~ that drawing is pastel and I had an amazing time doing it!

    Alex, I can't say I'm sorry that you're staying for another week..lol.

sounds like something several of us would do- get the date wrong.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at July 22, 2007 7:20 PM

We attended a horse show yesterday, a "Blue Ribbon" circuit show. It was a first time for us, as we usually can't afford the entry fees. Since my daughter is working now, she decided she could afford it!

It was one of our famous "late start" shows here in Arizona. They start later in the day, to avoid the worst of the after noon heat. The show started at 4:00. The heat was absolutely unbearable at that hour, but it soon began to cool down, and the evening turned out to be bearable.

My daughter entered our big paint in the English part of the show and managed a sixth place, two thirds and a second. Not bad !

When I was feeding the crew this morning, I gave them all a good hug and it brought to mind how GENTLE and DOCILE these animals are normally. I say normally, because they would never mean to harm you in any way unless they feel threatened. They WILL kick, but it is a reflex action, born out of fear. They don't have a "mean" bone in their body.

I just felt particularly lucky this morning, to have them. Don't get me wrong, it is a lot of work, and VERY expensive. We have given up other luxuries, such as eating out and going to movies, in order to afford the horses. But I'm still lucky to have them, and so glad I made the decision to take the more difficult path. I suppose, many years ago, I could have chosen to go buy a big screen TV. That wasn't my thing, and still isn't.

    Fortunately, I GET IT.

Go hug your animals, whatever they are. They bring us SO MUCH.

Just wondrin'...since PERFECT DRIFT is a not-so-perfect-non-winning-anymore gelding, might Old Friends be interested in him?

So many racehorses, fade away, and are lost to who-knows-where. I would think that PERFECT DRIFT might be a "PERFECT" candidate as a nice one to add to the magnificent herd at Old Friends. He also might come cheap, since he is not winning, cannot breed, and still has to eat. Also, there would be no added cost of shipping and quarantine from overseas..he's already HERE.

I found the words of his trainer(?)/Owner(?) a bit disquieting, at the end of the article...when he spoke about not having very many horses left in their barn, and wanting to branch out into other kinds of "business" endeavors.

Just wonderin'...and praying for PERFECT DRIFT.

    Good day, family -

Glad to see we're still here, and Mr. Brown, that is too funny! Thank goodness you discovered the date error before you left!

A little fog this morning, with our Canada geese, who live in ever-increasing flocks in a nearby park, doing their endless training flights overhead, honking away as if it were October instead of July. What is truly peculiar about the geese is that while they fly in loops, for no apparent reason, they cross the street in a line, on the ground. Since the street is actually a state highway business arm, this is frightening to watch, but there are "geese crossing" signs, written and pictorial, and while there is an occasional goose death, they generally manage to project a kamikaze attitude without paying the ultimate price. It's pretty funny to watch people in the morning, mid-commute, snarling and cursing in their cars as the geese make their stately progress across four crowded lanes.

Missed a time change on ESPN broadcase yesterday, so did NOT see Octave's triumph, more's the pity. I, too, love grays, and she's a tough girl. Certainly enjoyed Red Giant, though. You couldn't fault either horse - and I thought it most appropriate that even the photo analysis took a loooooooong time.

    ###
Mary S - Happy birthday to you. Your dignified and structured prayers have been a comfort to us all, and I hope the world is sunnier to you now than it was in the dark days of January and February. Your steadfast care for the Boss Hoss, and all the horses, is an inspiration. Be well.

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, - courage and kindness.

    Love - Jean

Alex, you just can't seem to extricate yourself from us ... LOL ... but we are delighted to have you "sticking around" for another week.

Thanks for posting the article about Rags being pulled up this morning. Needless to say, I am more than "just a little concerned" for her since this is the second "not serious" incident that has occurred since her Belmont win. Is this a commonplace occurrence? I'm wondering if, maybe, too much was taken out of her from her Belmont race and now she is either 'resisting' workouts and training or there is something "underlying" wrong.

Alex, can you or anyone here give some 'words of wisdom' on this situation?

Ellie, let not your heart be troubled. Here's a question, that answers itself: Has there ever been a family without squabbles?

We are a large, and diverse group. We come from all over the country, and the world. We are all different, but come united, because of our love for BARBARO.

EVEN WITH OCCASIONAL STRIFE...(egos, bruised feelings, mis-understandings, overly pointed retorts, hormones...whatever...sometimes our harmony turns a bit sour. None-the-less, our song goes on.

If anyone is here, that does not actually belong here, they eventually fade off. It is the unity of Love that sustains this Famblee...

Believe, Dear Heart...Believe in the power of Love...for BARBARO, and for eachother.

(pimples, spinach in our teeth, bugs up our butts, warts and all)...We DO go on together.

I lived every day last summer to read how Barbaro was doing. Jan.29, 2007, was an extremely sad day for me and I still haven't quite gotten over it. But I am still thankful, Alex, that you had let people express how they felt about Barbaro. It helped me a lot. I wish everyone a great life and may you all continue to save the horses. I believe that is Barbaro's legacy. Thanks once again, Alex! Take Care and God Bless!

    ### You are right Ellie,

We SHOULD be able to make our points without causing hurt feelings..but the fact is that it happens.

I have watched two different points of view be presented, with absolutely NO offense meant, and yet, sometimes offense is taken anyway...all by mistake. Both having missed the mark.

HOWEVER..we DO go on, together, in spite of squabbles or differences.

It used to distress me too, but, it happens, and we deal with it. Things cool down, and we get through it. We have found our level over and over again.

All and all, this group of FRENS is still just the best ever.

I hope that you can get a gathering for CHELOKEE's race at Mountaineer. I will be at Arlington, but a part of my heart will be riding with Edgar and CHELOKEE.

    ###Hay Amie,

Please stay, and come to the othersite, once Alex gets it going.

Just because answers are not always forthcoming, does not mean that you are not accepted. Sometimes, in a large community like this, one feels a bit "lost" and "invisible." Just keep posting anyway.

The posts are read and noted. Each one is a thread. Many threads, make the tapestry.

You'll be surprised at the responses that come, hours later...even after you might have logged off.

Every thought, and comment is important. Each one is a seed planted.

You are a part of the Famblee.

    Hay, Amie,

I get ignored all the time. I post anyway. Whether people respond or not, there are a lot of people who just read, or lurk. Just be brave and keep posting!

No response might just mean that nobody on at that minute has the answer. I have found that if really want an answer, I ask somebody BY NAME. Also, remember, they may be gone, even after you ask. Sometimes I am only on for a few minutes, then I get busy with other things.

Here's another one I found to be funny: one of my friends reads the posts DAYS later. She stays behind for a day or two on purpose, because she says otherwise, she might respond in anger. By the time she reads the posts, even if it is something that makes her angry, it is too late to post !

Don't ever take it personally. I've found that out.

Stay with us and move to the new site. I will look for you !

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at July 22, 2007 9:37 PM

    ##### Is Edgar scheduled to ride CHELOKEE on the 4th. Great. I didnt know that. Yet another reason to attend...

TO Arnie......I wish you would continue with this new site also. I tried to post several times, and like you no one responded. Thats OK. I still post if I feel there is something I want to say. I could probably go on and on to all the posters that I have learned from and wish we could all meet in person. I so wanted to go to the Delaware Park get-together for that reason, but was unable.
    Tnx to all Ellie Az.

posting email from Lillian Petroff, who originated our inimitable battle cry, "Praise the Lord and Pass the Carrots"

EVERYONE - as I mentioned the other day, I reached out to Lillian Petroff because I hadn't heard from her in a few weeks, and was concerned, knowing that she has health issues that have been keeping her from posting. I want to share with you portions of her reply that I received 7/21 [edited to omit some health details]

    Dear CJ:

My Beanie Barbaro has a place of honour on my bed, my mother bought me the Barbaro edition of Vanity Fair. I look to the Big Bay One and all his frens for inspiration. Always. Now and Forever.

I am taking the gold standard of medications re: diabetes.

Please tell the FOBs that more of us can now fit into a stall at NBC due to my weight loss.

Please also tell them just how proud I am for the fight that is being waged against the slaughterhouses.

The Sweet Colt has proved a great teacher--reminding his American humans that they live in the land of government for and by the people.

Thank God, that a new site will be created. There is much work to be done. I hope to emerge from sick bay soon so that I may rejoin the ranks of the Good and the Great in a proper and meaningful way.

Praise the Lord and Pass the Carrots,

    ###
Just got back, and saw a kind note from Lynne. No, love, it's not El Camino Real! They'd all be grease spots were that the case. Hell, I can't drive 101 half the time anymore, because my elderly car and I prefer to stay below 75 mph!

I live in Seaside, which is right next to Monterey, 100 miles south of SFO. The road I referred to is Highway 218, connecting Highway 68 and Highway 1. When we moved here, 28 years ago, there were horses and orchards on both 218 and 68, between Monterey and Salinas. Now, of course, there are many new homes, far fewer trees, almost no horses or cattle, and still no housing for people making less than 75 - 85 thousand a year. Gee, that seems to leave out most of the folks who work in hospitality - our biggest employer on the Monterey Peninsula!

    ###
Ellie - I so agree with you. I have a hard time on the DB, because it seems to get so personal sometimes. Thanks for the heads-up on the rescue, though I am presently FLAT broke - sent my last spare change to Joe and TBFriends! I'll see if we can find more in the couch cushions! Also, I relate to what you, and others, say in response to Amie. Sometimes one posts in a vacuum, it seems, and other times, people are on it. A lot of it has to do with time of day, time zones, etc.

    ###
Amie - Please hang in with us! I am sorry if I have neglected to respond to you, because I have read your posts often, with a feeling of "simpatico". Often, as I just said to Ellie, I read things, and agree deeply, and want to shoot off an answer saying, "YES!", but the topics sometimes go by so fast that I just can't keep up, or I have to take a phone call at work, or who knows what. Anyway, I would deeply regret not seeing you here, so I hope you realize, after the responses here, that you are not unaccepted. Honest!

Good day, all! Sorry about Real Lace, but glad she is well.

All for the love of Barbaro. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Looking forward to hearing about your new adventures as you travel. I will miss the Fair Hill stories. Safe journey. I'm sure that Barbaro will be with you to take care of you as you took care of him. Looking forward to reading your book. You are, and always be, special. As Barb in AZ (The Queen of Comments)says, don't take stuff personally, people are busy, we all have different work schedules, time zones. It's a mighty nation...and most everyone is going in 6 different directions at once...

You just gotta stick with it, and repost if you don't get an answer the first time...that usually works for me, and I've seen others do it too...

As some of you may know, Ragszy was pulled up during a workout this morning, according to the DRF. It was noted as "nothing serious" but something felt amiss with her and her rider, Lauren Robson, jumped off and aborted the workout. After examination, all seemed to be "OK" but she will be given a more thorough exam tomorrow. I am very very concerned ... so

I've just set up a candle group under Ragsy for her well-being because I am very concerned for her. If you are so inclined, please light a candle for her:

    FoBs!! To Arms!

The big ransoming on the DB is now down to about $364. This is such a peensie number compared with where it began: gazillions of dollars, in shifts, foals, mares and stallions, shipping $$, coggins $$, oh, lord: i can't remember now what all has been taken apart, piece by piece--rather, put together, piece by piece. And now? Under $400. So please try to dig in and send anything: $5 will help....

Like someone said: go through the sofa cushions, dig under the car rugs, the linings of purses...

exhausted after another weekend of fundraising for the GH. They're exhausted too...Anyhow: i'll drooling on the keyboard, so tired...

But let's make Alex's last week a record setter with the completion of this huge rescue effort out west.

AMIE, I hope you see this. It's certainly NOT that you weren't accepted. There are different and various levels of friendship and closeness in this community, just as there are everywhere.. Many of us have made lots of unanswered comments..

Just so you know, I read every one of your comments. I've felt your pain since Jan. 29th - I really have, every time. I would tear up, and experience your anguish right along with you. Just because someone doesn't comment back doesn't mean they're not with you in spirit. You are an FOB, therefore you are cherished and appreciated.. Blessings to you..

Hiya, FsOB! Golly, Alex, what a treat to see that you are "unretired" for another week. Yesterday Brent & I had the pleasure of going to "The Celebration of the Horse" hald at the Mitchell Farm Retirement Center in Salem,CT. What a fabulous facility! Immaculate, with 21 very lucky horses in residence (a few are boarders). I hope to be able to do some volunteer work for them, perhaps with some fundraising, grant-writing, or by bringing treats to the horses on a regular basis. Brent is still doubled over with laughter at my suggestion that I could muck stalls. ("You, you don't even own a pair of jeans! You can't muck stalls in a sundress and sandals!") Then he almost became hysterical when I said that I could buy a special outfit, sort of like what Barbara Stanwyck wore on "The Big Valley", to muck stalls. Anyway ... a fabulous place & I made special friends with Remi, Dandy, & Ray of Light (AKA "Ray", who is a mare). Peace to each of you as we prepare for the start of a new week, RMH

    #### To Theresa and Kathleen: I am so sorry about the passing of Nick and Cowboy. They were fortunate to know your love.
To CJ & Jean Nolan: How sweet to see that your Fathers shared a birthday!
To Mary S.: May your birthday be a spectacular one. Your presence here is very comforting.
To Dora J. Crow: So sorry to see that you'd been ill. I missed seeing you here for awhile now and thought perhaps you'd left the Big Board. Hang in there, dear Dora.
To Martita: Your words are always so tapestry-like!
To Amie & Joanne Frank: I've always enjoyed seeing your postings. Forgive me if I neglected to include your names in my stream of consciousness rambling on Friday evening. I was really upset that night and know that I missed saying farewell to probably more than a few regular posters.
To Lou Ann: I hope that your computer is working better today. How awful that it wasn't in top order this past weekend. ####

    ### Maribel, Lynne, Janice, Anna, BobbieB, Robyn - thank you for remembering me with birthday wishes today!

##Jean Nolan - thank you too for the birthday greetings. I loved your post about the fog and the geese occuring this morning. Remember when they had the memorial for The Fog? There were geese that flew over the track that day - Someone said there were 9, and that the 10th one missing, was like they were flying in the missing man formation. Anyone else remember that? I thought it was beautiful. I so appreciate that I was part of your post about fog and geese! I love you Fog.

I made a mighty wish today. I will let you all know if it comes true - I pray that it does. I realized last night, my birthday wish from last year did come true. Never occured to me to wish that B would walk out of NBC - I never had any doubt that would happen....never. Strange now to realize. He has been with me, in my thoughts so strongly for the past days.

Yesterday I gave my favorite horse at HFH, Sherman, a sponge bath. Sherman is a big, black Tennesse Walker with a very strong spirit - power. He is older, and his body is worn, but oh that spirit. It was awesome to do that. Looking at every scar, every muscle... tracing along with reverance.... hard to describe - we were just one during that time - one. He's not particularly found of baths, but we both enjoyed this one! He is such a loner too - but when I was leaving a while later, and looked out at the pasture as I was driving past, he was standing with 10 or 12 of the herd under the big oak trees - head held high and into the wind - beautiful. And today I saw a dragonfly with a red body!! I've never seen one with a red body before - it was spectacular. Very nice couple of days. Thank you God.

Thanks again for the birthday wishes.

    I love you forever horse.

Catching up with the posts of the last 2 days. Mary S, Happy B'day. So much beauty and passion here for the horses, eloquence, wit and wisdom, I am overwhelmed. Maybe it's the aftermath of a long night running IVs for a raisin-eating Lab (he's OK!) but I don't think so. The force of the Barbaro nation seems to be on the rise.

The women from Alpha Mare Media met on the backstretch this morning (Sunday) at Saratoga and prayed for a safe meet for all, riders and horses, the well-being of horses, the end of slaughter, the works. This has never been done before. FOB flyers received with enthusiasm. A fantastic meet is in the wind. Please come to Saratoga, FOBs!

Happy almost retirement, Alex, enjoy your last week at home. Can't wait to hear what Eduardo said about Big B.

Happy trails to all... Here are the words as I learned them.. key of D:

    Happy trails to you

    Until we meet again

    Happy trails to you

    Keep smiling until then

Who cares about the clouds when we'ere together?

Just sing a song, and bring the sunny weather.

    Happy trails to you,

    Til we meet again.

Alex, Glad we will have you for another week, but sorry your plans are delayed. You and this site have changed my life for the past 14 months, can't imagine not "checking in" each day, thank you and Tim so for everything and for sharing Barbaro with us.....

I have booked my room for the Travers and am just so excited. This will be my first time actually going to a track to see races and just hope I get a glimpse of my favorite horses. I have always loved Saratoga for all of its pleasures. Hope all FOB's are well this night.

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep.

I "chuffed" at you softly as you brushed away a tear,
    "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached out to me.

I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to assure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for your key.
I gently touched you with my nose, I smiled and said, "Its me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair,
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me to be so near you everyday,
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over...I smile and watch you yawning
and say"Good-night, God Bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out.... then come home to be with me.

Ohhhhhhhhh! Mary S. WHAT a GIFT you are to us..everyday...but especially this, your Birthday!!

I wanted to respond to your earlier post about your time with Sherman:) I've not been involved in 'bathf' time yet with Mister or Rosie...though I am promised when it IS time, I can come help:) However, reading your words, 'we were one' I could SO relate...because that is exactly how I feel when I'm there with Mister...stroking...smooshing my face into his big shoulders/neck...it is such a peaceful time, and yes Mary, I feel we are 'one' then, too:)

When I read your accounting with Sherman, I could 'feel' it all:) Thanks for sharing! Have sweet dreams tonight!!

Yes it is Verna. But, in a way, it's nice to see. Remember when we we're getting a lot of attention and this happened alot? Then we argued some amongst ourselves and everyone went away? I think it shows we're regrouping and the "bad guys" are scared. We're strong and getting stronger every minute!

Lee, don't know if you are still around, I had some late nigh laundry to tend too but...

yes, you are right, it has felt so good around here the last few days. To see so many names come out of the woodwork to say Hi, I am still here and to wish Alex and Tim their best. It felt like home again.
Hopefully, that will spill over to new site.

    Good night Lee.

    Amie,

    Hang in there!

Whether one of the "regulars", a lurker or, like me, one Harriette's "Quiet Ones", each of us was all drawn to Barbaro and to this site for a reason. We've found something valuable or would not have stayed. The main thing, I think, is that each of us find ways to contribute. I do hope that you come to the new site when it is up and running. Each of us is stronger with the support of the other.

Posted by: Susan In Hawaii at July 23, 2007 7:22 AM

Oh yea Verna, I'm still here. Stuck on the night shift. lol I have the feeling that when we move to alexbrownracing.com we'll feel at home.

    Lee

P.S. Isn't doing laundry late at night a job for the kids? LOL

    Posted by: Sophie7675 at July 23, 2007 7:55 AM

    LOL Lee, not my kids!!!
Actually, I try to do it at night in the summer so it doesn't heat the house up as much. In the winter, during the day so it will help heat the basement.

    On the night shift huh...
Well I don't know what ya do, but at least it isn't as hot at night. But, I assume you are in a comfortable office since you have a computer at hand. Well, of course you could be on a loading dock that doesn't have an office. Now THAT bites. I have been there.

I too think all will go well at the new site. It will be interesting to see how it is set up. I know it is supposed to be like this one. As long as it is not like wiki, I'll survive...LOL

    Love,
    Verna
