Barbaro Updates: 339

updates are now here.

Update 2208: Rags to Riches received another vet inspection today and appeared fine, but for good measure she is going to New Bolton for a complete physical: Vet Finds Rags To Riches Sound, excerpt:

Under Dr. Allday's recommendation the filly will be sent to New Bolton for a complete physical. "Although everything seems to be fine, in order to be thorough she will have a complete physical done," said Pletcher. "Though her race plans will be made after the exam, she remains under consideration for the Alabama, at Saratoga, August 18."

I made another visit to New Holland today. I met Bev there who bought a thoroughbred gelding, I saw Christy later and she purchased two from a farm close by.

Update 2207: A bit of a dull and drizzly morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had two to ride. First out was Fortuna, and she went to the Tapeta track along with Tim on Mass Romantic. I galloped Fortuna a mile and a half (she trained yesterday) and Tim galloped Mass Romantic a mile. Fortuna went nicely, her one quirk is she can get a little fired up coming home. With the cooler weather she got a little stired up but not too bad. Next out was Kitty, she went to the dirt track, and the gate, with the Two Punch 2yo and Tim. The gate crew wondered why I had not left (a few others remarked similarly). Both behaved very well in the gate, we cantered out and then galloped a mile. As I was leaving Tim was getting Redaspen ready, she was to do a little work this morning to prepare her for a race this weekend at Philadelphia Park. Real Lace seemed fine after her race yesterday. A nice quiet morning.

Update 2206: There were two decent graded turf stakes yesterday. A Grade 1 at Del Mar: Stock Rising for Eddie Read Winner After Market and a Grade 2 at Woodbine: Sky Conqueror Powers Home in Northern Dancer BC. The latter was won by Edgar Prado. Finishing second was the Michael Dickinson trained Marsh Side.

Today is media blitz day.

We must have an impact on these newspapers and other news organizations. We need the kind of coverage the Michael Vick story got. With the right press, people pay attention.

loved your story about sherman and seeing red dragonflies. i had never seen a red dragonfly until this past week at work. we have a garden with a koi pool and you can sit and eat lunch there...i usually take my break and watch the fish. i've been fascinated all week watching a pair of red dragonflies...does it mean something? ps...good morning!~

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

Pennsylvanians, are you willing to be a voice for Barbaro? Will you help us end horse slaughter and inhumane transportation for good?

There are 4 or 5 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and assist in strategically targeting our PA Senator and Reps. We are now 52 strong, but we need help winning over the remaining legislators from PA who have not co-sponsored. If you are willing to join our team effort email me at Lor's Email Addy.

OUR HORSES NEED YOUR HELP!

A few minutes each day for our Horses it not much to ask…is it?

I GET IT.

I, too, can not access the discussion boards. I assume it has to do with the transition period for Alex's new website.

These are the results from the races on Sunday;

Please don't "do" this list until after completing the TWR Strategy list for today and the marching orders from your State leader. Please contact sbreaux1@verizon.net to join a State group or to form one if there isn't alrady one in your State.

AND NOW THE EXTRA HAHS nat'l target list: (be sure to mention S 311) These people are being targeted by other groups today as well, so our voices add to the impact.

Morning

###Susan Saratoga, Joanne Frank, mikki and Janice - thank you for your posts to me!

##mikki - amazing. We both saw a red dragonfly. The one I saw had the most beautiful bright red body. Yes, I've never seen one either, and to see it on my birthday - I thought it might mean something too. I know they eat mosquitos, so with all the rain....but I've never seen a red one. I looked up dragonfly in my Animal Speak book. There are estimates they have been around 180 million years (who estimates these things?)!! No mention of the red color, but they represent transformation, light, emotions, change and renewal. To some Native Americans they represent the souls of the dead.

If anyone knows anymore, will you email me?

Good day, family -

###
Mary S - I hope your day was fabulous, and I'm very envious of your red-bodied dragonfly. I, too, love dragonflies. We have iridescent blue ones, and they tend to hover around our garden.

###
Lynne Brown - You make me laugh so much! We'll have to get together one of these days. And I was complaining about the average speed on Highway 101 from Monterey to San Francisco, Alameda, Belmont, and other points in the Bay area, which I have driven FAR too often in the last month and a half. I never seem to see ANYONE going anything remotely resembling the speed limit.

###
Robyn Hoffmann and Judy in Ontario Canada - Just a thank you to you ladies for always being so pleasant and thoughtful. And Robyn - I was dying at the idea of you mucking stalls in your shirtwaist... Thank you (and Brent!) for that picture.

###
Liz in the UK - I hope you are well, despite the awful conditions there. We're thinking of you.

###
Amie - Did you get enough responses to know that you are cared for? Have a great day, valued FOB person!

###
Christine - Miss Ari Marie sends her warmest regards to Miss Gracie, and hopes she is having a good sleep-on-the-sofa day.

###
Anyone whose name I forgot as I was posting through my tears (and a glass of wine) on Friday night - (Lee, Kathy B, MJ, Cindy O'Dell, Christine among others) - please, please, please know that you all have a place in my heart. It's just my memory that's faulty! (Way too much fun in the 60s!)

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day - courage and kindness.

As of today's mail, we hit the goal of raising $600 to pay for a full page FoB ad in the benefit program for the Anna House fundraiser, which will honor the Jacksons and take place in Saratoga next month.

More than two dozen people contributed a wide array of amounts.

HUGE thanks to Bonnie, whose idea this was, and to all of you who supported and contributed in various ways: by donating American Express rewards points, artwork, time, and money.

After the benefit (August 22nd), I'll post to the DB details of the event.

Until then...THANK YOU!

Is anybody else out there sick of making these calls? I know I am. I feel like I don't have anything left to say to them, like I am a broken record. I feel like they are as sick of hearing from us as I am sick of calling them.

Why do I bring this up? Because if anybody else is feeling like this, I just want you to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE !

Can we QUIT?

NO ! ! !

I just rattled through all my calls, and I must say it took me less than ten minutes. That should tell you that I don't keep them on the line very long. BUT, it keeps our issue in the forefront and if they are counting calls, it gets my call ON THE LIST.

Here's another hint: If you are doing the Media Blitz, you can do it ANYTIME, day or night, or at midnight if you feel like it ! Since I am three hours behind Wahington, D.C. time, I got my calls done first. Now, I can do the Media Blitz whenever I want.

We STILL need state groups and state callers, so, PLEASE,

GET

Belated Happy Birthday, MaryS Am hoping this coming year will be the best ever. I loved the story of your dragonfly. Someone must have been there to wish you a blessed day, on the anniversary of your visit to this world. On Mother's Day, a day that is usually hard for me to get through because I miss my mom so much, a dazzling blue dragonfly hovered over me for several minutes as I sat on my patio. Was wishing she would sit with me for a while, but instead, she rose up to a spot inside the giant shrub, and hovered at a parting in the branches where I could then see "my" doves nesting. My mom absolutely loved doves, as do I. I knew instantly who my blue winged visitor was.

Hope everyone is well and hopeful.

Love to all

I just read about your new addition. I'm so happy for you and Montego. She couldn't ask for a better mom and I'm sure she will be the most loved horse with the best tuck-in's ever.
I don't write as often as I used to but I still read your tuck-in's to Barbaro. You keep him alive through your tuck-in's Laurie. You make him feel so close.
I still cry for him (as I am right now) like he was my own. All I have to do is just talk about him and the tears start. Most people don't understand how we can miss him like we do. But here, people do understand.
Anyway, enough tears, this is a happy time for you and Montego. I wish you many wonderful years together. Know that Barbaro will be at your side through all of them.

NEW HORSES ALERT!!! Was up at the ranch this afternoon as the family drove back from New Holland with two mares...one is a beautiful dark bay, the other is a buckskin. No names yet, but they are going to be LOVERS!!! I was giving them Reiki before they came out of the trailer. I'm going back Wednesday and Thursday. I can't wait.
The boys are great - was working on all of them at one point.

Today has been unseasonably cool...but at least the sun is now out.

Life is so darn good.

Over a week ago someone posted a link to an article about an invented "contraption" for horses with laminitis or leg injuries. It enables the horse to walk while supported in a sling. There was a little video that went with the article. But, I can't remember the name of the article or who posted it. Anybody!?

From the DB. There is a 10 yr old OTTB, Allen's Sphinx that needs a home. We ransomed him to send to a rescue, but he did not do well at the layover farm, and the rescue could not transport him with 3 young colts, so he was sent back. Now he is in WV and is for sale. I am concerned he could end up at auction. He is listed under horse rescue "OTB for sale cheap". There is contact information there. This is from the first time he was posted:

This boy had career winnings of over $60,000 and now it is his turn to just become a horse. He has a nice pedigree – out of Native Dancer and War Admiral (www.pedigreequery.com/allens+sphinx) – and we’re told he has a wonderful personality. Allen’s Sphinx has no soundness issues.

Posted by: Shirl at July 24, 2007 12:18 AM

OK, FOLKS, I KNOW OUR JOB IS TO GET CO-SPONSORS (and the occasional media blitz) and that "others" are in charge of publicity/media issues.....HOWEVER, I have also read here and on the Forum about how many people have contacted various television personalities/newscasters about horse slaughter to no avail....

....all of which leads up to the story on NBC Nightly News today about "it's time to outlaw Spain's national pasttime - bullfighting" and the story went on about "cruelty to the bulls." Please understand that I happen to believe bullfighting (just like dogfighting) SHOULD be outlawed...but what the hell does it take to get publicity/stories about HORSE SLAUGHTER?????

Sorry, I don't mean to seem crabby (even though I am)...maybe it's just the "Monday blues" but please, somebody, anybody, explain to me why we don't seen spots on national news about horse slaughter?

Nancy CT....I couldn't agree more...yes, we have had SOME coverage...all well done stories, i.e., CBS about the Old Friends Farm in Kentucky...and others which I cannot think of at this moment.

I read your comment posted T/S 12:27A today...I too, just hate bull fighting!! But we are watching a story on NBC Nightly News about how Spain needs to make bullfighting illegal...America was settled on horseback!

I sent Brian Williams-NBC Nightly News a note via e-mail just now and pasted our Media Blitz letter to my note...I hope someone reads it and maybe they will do a story on horse slaughter in America!! I HOPE!

You are so right Nancy CT. I have been wondering that, myself.

Here's something that made me sick at heart. Just about a half hour ago, I turned on FOX NEWS, just in time to catch the last part of Brit Hume's news show (around 6-6:30PM)

As their so-called- lighthearted humorous closing-clip, they showed some of Jimmy Kimmel's Late-Night clip of Senator Byrd's, impassioned speech concerning his personal outrage at the dog-fighting acts of Michael Vick.

Kimmel actually added "humorous" quips, in the poignant pauses between the Senators cries of "Barbaric!" The Kimmel thing made mockery of Byrd's outrage, and deminished the gravitas of the situation.

Not only was Kimmel wrong, to make light of the Senators outrage, but he was wrong not to applaud Byrd, and join him in the outrage.

Shame on Kimmel...AND..shame on Hume and FOX news to show it to us, thinking that we might find it funny too.

Are hearts REALLY so hard? Are they REALLY so cold?

Your Fren, O

Posted by: Otherlyn at July 24, 2007 12:56 AM

Ditto to Nancy in CT, Otherlyn and Lynne Brown about the media coverage. I can't for the life of me understand why horse slaughter isn't considered as "barbaric" as bull fighting and dog fighting, both of which I totally condemn. What is it going to take??

Janice

###
OTHERLYN - for the sake of my dwindling sanity, I gave up watching FOX news years ago! I applaud Senator Byrd's passion about the "Michael Vick case" and pray that he will speak just as passionately about horse slaughter!

You are right, there have been a precious few stories about slaughter in the NATIONAL media....but usually "sanitized" for the viewing public and tagged onto "feel-good" stories about places like Old Friends...it was a wonderful piece, but didn't address the horrors of slaughter faced by the thousands of "unknown" horses...

I would dearly LOVE to see a "wake 'em up" investigative report on America's dirty little secret in a way which would educate the public on the TRUE facts...maybe I'm just dreaming!

VANITY FAIR MAGAZINE - ARTICLE ON BARBARO

Vanity Fair, August issue, on newsstands now, has HUGE article on Barbaro!! Don't know if anyone else has posted this. Haven't finished reading it, but looks good, & has lovely large pics of Bobby, Matz on Messaging, the Jacksons, Brette. On the cover, Bobby is peeking out from the top corner edge!

What's strange (or fated), is that I NEVER read this magazine, but was just passing by the magazines in the store and something caught my eye on its cover & I picked it up -- not even seeing Bobby's head on the corner edge. As I flipped through the pages...I suddenly saw Barbaro inside!! So I wanted everyone to know, who might want to buy the magazine.

Just reported on MSNBC and ESPN - Roger Goodell and the NFL orders Vick NOT to report to training camp. They stated the people have been heard. Goodell stated, Criminal or not his conduct is detrimental to the NFL. Now let's find a way to let the horses who are being slaughtered to be heard. Blitzing the media today is a good start.

Quote from Amanda Conrad, founder/president of the Pit Prints Pit Bull Rescue Foundation/Rehabilitation, the only state licensed Pit Bull specific rescue organization in Georgia and largest in the U.S. "I have been interviewed by numerous magazines, news stations and newspapers over the past week regarding the Vick situation. I sincerely hope to see Vick out of the NFL soon. If he's not removed, I will spend every waking hour gaining public support and boycotting the NFL and the Falcons until he is removed, I will speak to every radio station, news station, magazine and editor in the country until I am heard by all. I have the tenacity of the dogs I rescue and will not stop until I get Vick removed from the NFL."

Promote Responsible Ownership - NOT Breed Prejudice

Busy calling and faxing today but wanted to mention Masseuse who won a stakes at Woodbine yesterday ridden by Edgar Prado. He saved her career and possibly her life over 1 year ago when he pulled her up immediately after an injury. It took her over a year to come back and she won her first stakes on Sunday. Edgar, forever a hero.

From the Forum - please pray for Mr. Garcia!

Lava Man's groom seriously injured
By JAY PRIVMAN and BRAD FREE
DEL MAR, Calif. -- Noe Garcia, the long-time groom for the popular Lava Man, was seriously injured in an auto accident en route to work at Del Mar early Monday morning, trainer Doug O'Neill said late Monday afternoon.

According to O'Neill, Garcia lost his left arm in the accident.

Garcia had taken Sunday off and returned to his Los Angeles-area home. He was near Del Mar when the accident occurred, O'Neill said.

Garcia, 39, is in the intensive care unit of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., O'Neill said.

Lava Man won the Hollywood Gold Cup for the third straight year in his last start. He is on course to race next in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, which he won last year.

Garcia also was the groom for Sky Jack, another Hollywood Gold Cup winner trained by O'Neill.

Garcia has worked for O'Neill for 11 years, the trainer said.

Nancy Jean,
Actually, I have been meaning to ask how your vacation was....I'll email you soon. Some news here, my little baby ratties arrived yesterday. Who would have thought rats could be cute??? I have their cage next to the computer desk so I can laugh at their antics while I do research and such...
Take care,
G.

Wow. I cannot believe what is written above. Alex check the IP. I had nothing to do with ANY of those posts. My last post was asking Verna to check her emails.
