Barbaro Updates: 340

updates are now here.

Update 2212: Steve Haskin looks at the older horse division that is devoid of an obvious leader, as the second half of the racing season gets underway at Saratoga: Steve Haskin's BC Countdown: Life After Invasor, excerpt:

This is not to imply that racing is devoid of long-lasting stars. They are just much harder to find. Not to place Lava Man at this time among the elite of racing's enduring heroes, such as Kelso, Forego, and John Henry, but it is difficult in this day and age not appreciate what this talented and durable warrior has accomplished over the past three years. Although he may not be the Gulliver of the racing set, let's remember that Forego's 34 career victories came at only four racetracks -- Belmont, Aqueduct, Gulfstream, and Hialeah -- in two states. Certainly, no one held that against him, and it did not detract one bit from his greatness.

With that said, let us turn our attention to Saturday's Whitney Handicap (gr. I), a race that could launch another everlasting legacy, should the resilient Cinderella horse, Brass Hat, defeat what promises to be a hard-knocking field of stars and potential stars. And there is still time for hard-nosed competitors Sun King, Lawyer Ron, and Magna Graduate to leave their mark before departing the racing scene. And then there are the potential stars who are just emerging as major players, such as Flashy Bull, Fairbanks, Diamond Stripes, and Dry Martini.

Update 2211: FOB Debra Lopez is organizing "Horse Aid" in September: Live aid event for horses, excerpt:

The line-up for the day-long event lineup will range in musical styles from country, folk to rock. Featured bands include Brian Stace of Nashville, Ronnie Nyles and the Krash Band of Milwaukee, Martha Berner of Chicago, Spiral Trance, Twang Dragons, Brent Mitchell and Twisting Roses.

"Over the past several years the public has become more in tune with the needs of retired horses and have stepped up to the plate to help fund various organizations that provide our horses with a safe haven, said spokesperson Debra Lopez.

Update 2210: A gorgeous morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had four to ride, two for Tim and two for Linda. First out was Nonpareil, she went to the Tapeta track along with Tim on Mass Romantic. Nonpareil galloped a mile and a half, and was very relaxed doing so. Its been a while since I have galloped her and she just seems to be maturing well. Second out was Kitty, she went with her usual galloping partner and we also went to the Tapeta track. We galloped a mile and a half together and they both went well. For Linda I galloped Pistol and Precious Partner, and both also went to the Tapeta track. All was well. It was nice to see another exercise rider (Dave) in a Brett Favre shirt, I guess Dave assumed I was gone (having told everyone I was leaving last weekend). A couple of others made reference to beating Fillius Fog's record. It took me a while to figure that one out!

It is media blitz week.

Update 2209: Tomorrow begins the most anticipated meet in horseracing (at last for those of us on the east coast); Saratoga. Winners of each leg of the triple crown are stabled there, the Green Monkey may debut there, the early two year olds will be showcased, and the Travers, which is the meet's marquee race, should help answer which is the best 3yo. The anticipation is covered here: The Green Monkey Could Swing Into Action at Saratoga and here: Plenty to get excited about at the Spa.

Lava Man’s groom loses arm in car accident

by Steve Scheuelein

Noe Garcia, groom of handicap star Lava Man, was seriously injured in an automobile accident near Del Mar early Monday morning, trainer Doug O’Neill reported.

“Details are still sketchy,” said O’Neill Monday afternoon. “But it seems he was rear-ended and his van spun around near the Via de la Valle exit off I-5, probably around 4:15 a.m.”

“He was taken to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla,” O’Neill said. “His left arm was severed, and he had head trauma, but he was alert.”

O’Neill said Garcia had Sunday off and was apparently returning to Del Mar from his home in Los Angeles. O’Neill said he was at Hollywood Park on Monday morning when he learned from assistant Leandro Mora at Del Mar that Garcia did not report to work at 5:30.

O’Neill thought the usually reliable groom had overslept before receiving the bad news from a Scripps official around 8 a.m.

Garcia, a 39-year-old native of Guatemala, has worked for O’Neill for 11 years and has groomed Lava Man since O’Neill claimed him for $50,000 in August 2004. Lava Man, a six-year-old Slew City Slew gelding, has earned more than $5-million.

Lava Man won a third straight Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) in his previous start on June 30, and is being prepared for the August 19 Pacific Classic Stakes (G1), which he won last year.

“Noe won four Gold Cups,” said O’Neill, pointing out that he also rubbed Sky Jack and contributed greatly to his victory. “Sky Jack had a knee that was constantly warm and blowing up.

“Noe was like a church mouse,” said O’Neill, crediting the groom’s quiet manner with calming horses. “His quietness was so good around horses. He was the first one there, and the last to leave.”

### Quick excerpt from Fox Sports story on Michael Vick:

"...(NFL Commissioner) Goodell was meeting with officials from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The league and the ASPCA are working on a program to educate players about the proper treatment of animals."

Great to see they are being pro-active on this issue. I can guarantee that Michael Vick isn't the ONLY player in the NFL involved in dog fighting, so this is a positive step for the league to be taking. Also glad to see that Nike won't be releasing the latest Vick shoe this summer, either.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

G'Mornin' Famblee

unklealexbrown, thank you AGAIN for taking us along on your workouts this morning. I can see, hear, feel and smell the whole experience and it is wonderful.

###Martita, have been thinking of you and little Binky. By now she's crossed over. BC will be waiting for her as she comes through the light. What a purrfest that will be.

###okay you all, wasn't going to watch The Long Shot, because I expected it to be a real tearjerker. It was, but in a good way. Thanks to all who posted that it was to be broadcast last night. Never read the TV guide so I would have missed it. I'm very happy that I didn't.

You know how sometimes things happen in cycles? I'm going to have to start mapping this one, but today and yesterday, each aide I spoke to was cheerful, "thank you, I'll tell her/him you called", "thank you for your call", "will certainly let the Senator/Congressman/woman know", and so on. Not a single "where are you calling from" and even a "good luck with your work" from one of my favorite senator's office.

Have had two canned responses to the Media Blitz of yesterday, but nothing else. Anyone get any sincere interested responses?

Am so sorry to hear of Noe Garcia's accident. What a tragedy. We'll put him on one of the Barbaro Effect wagons, okay?

Back to work. Hope everyone is well and happy.

Love to all,

Cheryl

Rags to Riches

If anyone wants to contribute to a basket for Rags to Riches for her stay at NBC, please call Kennett Florist today, Tuesday July 24, with your donation. There is a quick turn around for this gift to get the basket delivered to Ragsy at the New Bolton Center.

KF is handling all of the details including contacting NBC to coordinate the delivery. All of Rags to Riches favorite treats will be included to keep the girl from nipping the good folks at NBC! Should we place bets as to who will win that battle??? LOL!!!!

Debbie L.A.,
If all the media has been contacted in the media blitz, somebody usually reports in that they have finished their state. There may be several people in each state doing it, but as long as somebody (or several) have contacted all the media, then they need to post on the media link that the state is done. If you go to that link, you will see that people have reported in that they have finished with one state, or more. Does that help, or not? Do you have help? Some states are bigger and harder to do! If you need some help, go ahead and post that. Somebody may volunteer to help out.

The head of the NTRA is calling for opposition to the transport language in the agricultural appropriations bill, according to this from the Blood-Horse online. According to him and head of the American Horse Council, the language has consequences far beyond slaughter:

Language in Federal bill could halt horse transport

Theresa and all,

I went round and round on this one with the Arizona State Horseman's Association (ASHA.)This is the phrase that bothered them:

"To amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes."

Their argument was that the "other purposes" referred to transport, when in fact I think it belongs to the "slaughter" phrase instead.

This may be the wording to which they are referring. I'm just guessing.

Hey Barb,

I hit every media outlet for Pennsylvania yesterday (that was listed on the website) via email and those that didn't have email will be receiving a snail mail letter from me.

I did receive confirmation that my letter would be posted in a publication local to me (Hershey PA) on August 1st (will post a link if there is one on the 1st). Also, one of my other PA Team members was asked for additional source information from the Bucks County Courier Times.

This confirms that we ARE making an impact.

If anyone reading this has not participated, I sincerely hope you will. Our voice must be heard over the pro-slaughter people.

### There is a rescue on the board right now - horses in the feedlot going to slaughter. I know there is controversy regarding helping feedlot horses vs auction horses, and many points are valid.....but these guys are shipping tomorrow with or without controversy. Maybe the auction is a better place, maybe getting them before auction is the best place...but these horses don't know that, and they don't care - I'm sure they just want to live, and I know I don't want them to die. Please don't blast me for this.

I'm a bit tapped financially, so I've chosen this way to help these horses. I am giving a distance Healing Touch session to anyone that contributes $50 or more to this rescue. There are people here that can vouch for me - this is my work, and I am legitimate! Please help if you are able.

I'm getting so weary of the childish excuses for not supporting this legislation !!! They know exactly what that wording means!!! Equine Heaven, thank you so much for another much needed "laugh-out-loud'er". Today's episode and Jerry Finch's description of chasing Naysa around the barn to give her pre-surgical injection yesterday had me snorting and expelling nachos all over my monitor. Thank you sooooooooooooooo much

Excerpts from the article: the main concern is the effect on racing and equine health; I think it's about responsibility, not irresponsibility, and that it's the specific language about transport that concerns them, not the anti-slaughter measures. That's how I read it, anyway.

"The legislation, passed through a committee July 20, would eliminate funding for federal inspectors to 'examine, inspect, certify, or mark horses, horse carcasses, or parts of horse carcasses, or create, distribute, certify, endorse, or file any certificate concerning horses.' Officials said that would affect horses traveling from state to state or internationally.

'Intentionally or not, the bill would impact important international events such as the Breeders' Cup World Championships and Arlington Million (gr. IT), as well as the interstate shipment of horses for breeding and racing,' NTRA president Alex Waldrop said. '(This) would be devastating and would be felt by all breeds.'

AHC president Jay Hickey said the bill was drafted to target horse slaughter plants but has far-reaching ramifications.

'Unfortunately, the language is so broadly written, it would affect all horses,' Hickey said. 'I'm hopeful supporters of the federal ban (on horse slaughter) didn't intend to do that. I think everyone in the horse industry wants to continue things like quarantine facilities, export of horses, and health and safety measures.'"

The Horse Magazine (www.thehorse.com) August issue has a great article - Across the Fence - Industry Opinions titled, "Horses and Ducks." A suggestion of having a "Horses Limited" organization supported by the industry, corporate sponsors, and individual horse owners that could provide financial incentives to horse owners to leave their mares fallow. (Not breed)

Just another example of Barbaro's Legacy at work and the recognition that horse slaughter is not acceptable. The FOB's have brought this forefront and we are keeping it there.

Good job!! All the hard work and effort is paying off. The more media and awareness, the more others are having to make tough decisions. This article even points at Purina feeds and their positive ads on how horses are beautiful, athletic, etc and then states those companies cannot project one image and then support something so horrific as horse slaughter!!

The article is not online yet, but I'm sure as soon as it is, it will be posted.

Also, remember that your legislators will be in their local offices August 6 thru August 31. Try to make appointments to meet with them or their District Managers in person.

Be careful where you place blame. I am a member of ASHA. Just as all the veterinarians are not all pro slaughter, even their organization is, all of us in ASHA are not all pro slaughter, either. We are a HUGE Arizona organization, with thousands of members. When the board realized that not all of their members were pro slaughter, they seemed to mellow a little this year.

we shall;meet in the truth..

..
meeting at the bridge

inspired by theresa's and nick's journey on earth together..
and all ALL ALL

.in corners where so many animals are treated as they deserve
..sentient
living

part of our circle and our depth and my growth

i wonderd why my good neighbors were so invisible in this last month
a local crisis..unfolded.
. in which a abandoned and lost emmaciated
black cat wailed into the day and night to be taken in.
.a group of us banded together to tame him and feed him and give him
some stabilty he was so terrified..
he had been thrown out or lost from his home
some months ago..
and when he picked my door the day cherly's cat passed over
, i knew i had to take a good look if i was doing enough..for him

in the storm
last night
i resolved to birng him in .
.he was already pretty gone
..but i wanted this night --i suspected his last on earth-
-to be full of love and comfort
..i spread many soft quilts and blankets all about and stayed y his
side the whole night

..this am
early
i took him to a loving local vet near by
and we laid him to rest
..he was suddenly
not crying anymore.
.on the table
in my favorite shawl
he gathered himself.
.and as the valium coursed through his veins
he relaxed more and let out a wonderul sigh as if to say wowo
i dont feel any more pain.i can finally rest and turst the moment
we all sobbed..i told him he was a maginificent warrior and a great
teacher to me

.he had cancer in his tummy everywhere.huge lumps and he realy
sufferd ..
.
and the vet was utterly compassionate and tender.
.binky as i called him
received a royal departure and crossed over effortlessly at 8-23
this am
..
many tears later i pulled myself together
inspired by all of you
and NIck
how he set it all up to make it as easy as possible for theresa and
all those who loved and cared for him

i came home and cleaned the whole house
..i had played him some beautiful dalai lama music and he enjoyed
that last night
. it seemed to calm him
as i was calm too.
he was half blind..and maybe hours away from a passing that would
have been lonely and agonizing
very veyr painful one

i recall the words of many sages
who wrote in their scriptures
that seeing a living beingis the
very highest calling
.
i am deeply honoured to have born witness to his fight and courage
..
as i drove back from the animal hospital
the car in front of me had this license plate
OPE--
-\OPE.
. i coudnt not believe it
i re read it and re read it the it turned right and it was gone..
.

the divine hand
always working
.
barbaro
how you give me strength and courage to step it up
no matter
what
and that it is my birthday and that this how the forces asked me to
celelbrate my birth and life today..
..into this world.
i was born .in the beautiful mts of montevideo, uruguay
how great is that

in comfort and in deep gratitude

INSIDE THE MIND OF A HORSE

By DR JACK MURPHY
Tuesday July 24 2007

Horses, like humans are social animals -- probably why both parties get on so well together in the first place. This is also why some horses that are kept in isolation -- stabled alone away from companions -- are often more inclined to develop behavioural problems compared to group housed horses or free-roaming equids.

Indeed, anyone who has witnessed or experienced separation anxiety -- in humans or horses -- knows only too well just how important it is for both species to have access to companionship.

Experimental research has shown that mutual grooming -- where horses stand side-by-side and scratch each other's body in the area just in front of the withers -- has the effect of relaxing the horse and even lowers heart rates.

This particular activity appears to strengthen the bond between companion animals and may well be the best place for a handler to reward any horse for some desired behaviour or response.

Learning

The learning mechanisms of horses are similar to those of humans.

Just like humans, horses are quick on the uptake when exposed to trial and error learning -- learning the right reaction through a reward system, they are very talented in terms of classical conditioning -- learning associations between certain stimuli, cues or aids and they are masters at habituation -- getting used to things.

The horse can also learn to generalise in terms of subtle differences in stimuli, alterations or slight variations in aids or cues and they can even learn categories of things -- based on similar physical characteristics.

However, experimental work to-date seems to indicate that while horses are capable of forming categories, there is no evidence that they can actually develop abstract concepts -- this is a critical difference between humans and horses.

In simple terms, learning in any species is the modification of the internal behavioural organisation of the particular species -- and this essentially depends on the reinforcing properties or experience of the particular species' environment. In short, learning represents changes in an animal's behaviour resulting from experience of some condition or set of circumstances.

Psychological

From a psychological perspective, learning can be sub-divided into three broad forms that might be considered important in relation to general training and learning procedures -- a good understanding of these forms of learning will make working with and training the horse both easier and more appropriate.

The broad forms include: (i) non-associative learning, typically habituation and sensitisation -- where the horse learns to accept tack, rider etc,

(ii) associative learning or conditioning -- where the horse learns the signals for stop, go and turn etc, and

(iii) complex learning or insight -- currently there is very little evidence to suggest that the horse has this level of learning.

Trial and error

What people often erroneously consider as examples of higher-order reasoning in their horses, generally are little more than excellent examples of trial and error learning.

The pony that fiddles with the door latch and learns to open it and escape from the stable is a typical example -- it's very clever, but it is not reasoning on the part of the pony.

In the same way, horses learn within equitation where they simply learn to avoid pressure from the reins, rider seat and legs so as to give the correct response, originally learned by trial and error.

Observational learning of some novel behaviour has long been considered indicative of higher mental processing or levels of reasoning.

This form of learning requires an animal to have the ability to 'see and remember the behavioural sequence' so that they themselves could actually rehearse the novel act within their own mind and then subsequently imitate it for themselves.

The novelty aspect is very important because all animals are instinctively able to copy a behaviour that is already 'hard-wired' into their brains -- in other words something that is naturally part of their behavioural repertoire. Contagious behaviour is initiated as a result of an instinctive triggering device.

Everyone is well aware that when seeing someone else yawn, the observer is almost always inclined to yawn too -- it's just the same with the horse!

Contagious mimicking of instinctive behaviour is adaptive and so when one horse moves, trots, eats, or performs rolling behaviour others are often compelled to do so as well.

Curiously perhaps, unlike chimps, gorillas and dolphins, horses cannot recognise themselves in a mirror.

Furthermore the horse is a poor performer at seeing a detour -- like going further away from the desired goal such as along a fence line to get to a gateway to access things like a water hole or companions.

However, once they have managed to access the appropriate route, they are very quick to remember the path.

It is very likely that the horse is unable to do these type of activities without first learning and subsequently remembering 'how' -- simply because these mental abilities were not required in the evolution of their natural behaviours.

The horse has an excellent memory and, in some respects, the horse's memory is even better than the human equivalent.

Lifetime memory

Horses can remember specific activities and reactions without actually practising a specific behaviour, for many years at least and this probably in reality extends to a full lifetime.

Human memory tends to be affected by recall and reasoning abilities, whereas the equine memory tends to be more stable -- most likely because it is unclouded by reflective thinking and analytical processes.

It is also highly likely that the horse only ever retrieves specific memories of events and/or places when the animal is confronted once again with the original or similar stimuli to the first instance.

Essentially, this makes for a much clearer and more accurate memory and every horse owner is only too well aware of the fact that the horse knows if there is something even slightly different in its immediate environment -- such as a plastic bag on a hedgerow that was not there on a previous hacking out exercise.

Unfortunately and often to the detriment of training within equitation, the horse will remember much more than the rider as to what happened and the horse will invariably remember tension and fear better than anything else -- so these phenomena should always be avoided for optimal learning in the horse.

HOPE.What a beautiful gift you received from Spirit.I wish I could have been with you and Binky last night to just surround you with healing light. I was distance sending as it was and I sensed Binky's relief at finding such a compassionate soul as you.

To those who have been seeing dragonflies - I saw a violet one today whle having lunch with a girlfriend. It stayed with both of us for over 30 minutes. I will not be surprised to read of other FOB's receiving similar visitations.

now twines around your throat forever.

Your act in his defense,
keeping him safe last night,
bringing him home to God today,
giving him the Sweet Death,
the greatest gift of all.

This little one will be with you now forever,
maybe more so
than any other animal

For he stitched himself into your tapestry,
showed you the bliss of release,
showed you the grace of living with dying.

How lucky: you
How lucky: him
Now sealed together in a birthday;
a true birth day forever.

I wish you many, many, more, our poet-goddess.

Partial REPOST:

I'm a bit tapped financially, so I've chosen this way to help these horses. I am giving a distance Healing Touch session to anyone that contributes $50 or more to this rescue. There are people here that can vouch for me - this is my work, and I am legitimate! Please help if you are able.

Received an email alert from SAPL which included the following statement after talking about how Senator Byrd wiped tears from his eyes during his speech regarding dog fighting as "Barbaric."

In fact, during a Congressional hearing just last week a U.S. representative from Georgia derided a ban on horse slaughter as infringing on owner's rights because horses are "private property." The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act has come close to enactment in the US Congress but it continues to languish on Capital Hill due to a few individuals who misuse the democratic process and tout the private property argument. However, private property does not confer a right on anyone to mistreat animals. People who mistreat animals must be held accountable for their actions without being able to rely on this supposed justification."

Otherlyn, your words about the White Mare are so profound, can't stop thinking about her.

Perfect Drift seemed to me like he was protecting himself his last couple races, I know he is injured and I really believe this old veteran was taking care of himself. Good news this injury was found before he raced again.

Fans of Barbaro...

I find myself really missing him this last couple of days. I think back to what Barbaro represented which was nothing but good. He was strong, daring, full of spirit and had a heart of Gold. He was the most amazing horse. I think that sometimes I find myself realizing that the journey that Barbaro started is way so far from being over. We are now in the 3rd furlong. It has been a long bummpy ride but I know that if we believe in ourselves and we do what we can do within our power and love our neighbors we will survive this.

What is happening to these horses is not right. There will come a day when it will cease. I myself need to start working on a plan (would like to work with a couple of others) to get it together to have a "place" for these horses to go when they do get rescued. That seems to be the biggest concern of the senators and reps that I have talked with that are in swing mode.

We have to have a place called "home" for the horses. One that is safe, secure, and full of love. We need to start working on that NOW. I just want to be ready when the ruling does come down from Congress......

#### Dee I feel lots of love with you....

Once again to Alex... Thank you for all you have done....

Renee.. I hope that your hand starts feeling better.

Barbaro.... YOUR simply the best.....

Posted by: N at July 25, 2007 2:06 AM

N,

I too have been thinking that we need a place to call "home." One idea I had some months ago was that if every FOB saved $1 a week, in a short time we'd have enough money to buy a large tract of land and some barns/stalls/etc. I thought we could even set something up along the lines of the Ky Horse Park, others suggested a B&B type operation with horses.

Another idea was to buy an old horse farm or training facility, even a old track. The infrastructure would already be in place to start and we could always expand.

Something solid we could use in our arguments like you said. I'd love to work with you on these and any other ideas the FsOB can come up with.

For the love of the Horse,
Lee
