Barbaro Updates: 341

updates are now here.

Update 2215: Condolences to Graham Motion and his team for the loss of Massoud this afternoon at Saratoga. A couple of years ago I used to gallop Massoud. Very sad.

Graham had agreed to interview with me later this afternoon for my book. I offered to cancel the interview but Graham asked that the interview go ahead. A very sad day.

Update 2214: A little warmer this morning at Fair Hill. I had three to ride. First out was Mass Romantic, we went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a quarter. Tim came with us on Who's Happy, she jogged / hacked two miles. She is getting ready to run in a stakes race on saturday, as is Redaspen, both at Philadelphia Park. Mass Romantic galloped nicely. Second out was Kitty, she went with her usual galloping partner, the 2yo Two Punch filly, and we went to the gate. We had quite a long wait as Michael Matz also had a set at the gate, a large set. Kitty waited patiently, we stood in the gate nicely and galloped out together well. They are both doing their gate work very well. Final horse was Linda's Pistol, he went to the Tapeta track along with Robbie on Fortuna. We galloped a mile and a half and all was well.

It remains media blitz week.

Update 2213: Curlin breezed three quarter of a mile on tuesday in 1:14 and change: Curlin Breezes at Saratoga; Haskell on Tap, excerpt:

"I was very pleased with his breeze," Asmussen said. "We've very excited and ready for the second half of the season, which we hope culminates in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He accomplished a lot in a short amount of time and he's done well since the Belmont. He's easily recognizable around the barn."

Saratoga's 36 day meet opens today: Schuylerville card kicks off 2007 Saratoga meeting .

Good Morning Barbaro

Barbaro, please keep your sweet presence near and around us. Trying to call, fax, email, and knowing that Cavel and the borders are open for slaughtering is so heartbreaking. Give us encouragement and courage to continue on. We love you.

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

Yes, Dee...The Chairman of the Board is watching and He knows what is going on. I know God is heartbroken with such cruelty as our horses and other animals face.

Please, blitz away, call, fax, email. Someday this nightmare will go away, and we can smile and know in our hearts we are and have done the right thing.

Please remember the rescues, the Fallen Angels, the ones suffering, human or animal, the wildlife suffering in those terrible fires, and each other...we are love.

Have a nice, productive day.

Thanks Lyn for the Saratoga articles link. The article about Edgar Prado is good, but off in one respect:

Edgar Prado Article

"Prado's face hardly ever shows emotion. When he walks to the paddock, there's no smile. He doesn't show anger, sadness or happiness. But he is one of the most approachable people in the game."

We all know that's not true. We saw his emotion with Barbaro...and the day he won on Round Pond and Pine Island broke down at the Breeder's Cup Distaff.

Edgar does GET IT.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

I had the same concern as you do about signing up for their alerts. However, after thinking about it, I decided to sign up. I want to see what they send out. I will share that information with all of you, so no one else needs to sign up at their site. That way, if anything, they only have one more person listed. I decided it was worth the risk to see what they send me. I will keep you all posted.

Thanks Lyn Lifshin for the Saratoga article about Edgar Prado and Barbaro.

http://www.timesunion.com/saratoga/

I loved this excerpt about Edgar:

"Now, wherever Prado goes to ride, he is easily the most sought after jockey for autographs. At this year's Kentucky Derby, children snaked their way around the fence leading to the jockey's room, slipping programs and pictures toward Prado to sign as he walked by.

He didn't turn anyone down. It will be more of the same at the Spa for the next six weeks when he makes the walk from the jockey's room to the paddock.

"It doesn't take nothing to be polite," Prado said. "Putting a smile on a kid's face is the best reward you can have as an athlete. When you are out there performing, kids don't know if you win or lose. Sometimes they just want to see someone who is riding horses."

What a great guy "our" Edgar is!

F L O R I D I A N S

If you haven't joined our state group yet please consider doing so to help the horses. Cavel is slaughtering many precious horses today and many are being hauled in sweltering heat with no food or water. Email me at sirbear@bellsouth.net if you can spare a few minutes for the horses.

I posted last night the email I received from SAPL that stated at the Ag appropriations hearing last Friday many reps are using the "private property" excuse to justify horse slaughter. Let's remind them Michael Vicks' dogs were private property and the law says he cannot electrocute, drown or hang animals.

Why did this animal that had prospered so in the Colorado desert leave his amiable homeland for Siberia?

There is no answer.

We know that when the horse negotiated the land bridge... he found on the other end an opportunity for varied development that is one of the bright aspects of animal history.

He wandered into France and became the mighty Percheron, and into Arabia, where he developed into a lovely poem of a horse, and into Africa where he became the brilliant zebra, and into Scotland, where he bred selectively to form the massive Clydesdale.

He would also journey into Spain, where his very name would become the designation for gentleman, a caballero, a man of the horse. There he would flourish mightily and serve the armies that would conquer much of the known world.

Top Ten Ways to Get Rid of Your Farrier

1. Always wait until the last minute to schedule your shoeing appointments.
2. Do not handle your horses' feet at all. Especially the young ones.
3. Make sure your horses are loose in the pasture when your farrier arrives. The larger the pasture the better.
4. Read horse magazines so you can instruct your farrier on the latest shoeing techniques.
5. Fill the shoeing area with as many obstructions as possible. Dogs and children count extra.
6. Be sure and feed the other horses while the farrier is working.
7. Lead the horses through mud before bringing them to be trimmed or shod.
8. Don't clean your stalls and don't use fly spray.
9. Complain about the bill shortly after pointing out the high price of your new truck, daughter's horse, boat, etc.
10. Delay paying the bill as long as possible.

Hay Fambleee

Thank you, Alex, for taking us on your rides this morning. What a wonderful experience.

Good boy, Curlin! Be safe and well, beautiful boy.

Thinking of Miss Ragz today and always, and feelin' good. She's in such good hands. She's going to be getting sooooooooooo spoiled! She deserves it.

Want to share a little miracle with my fambleee. A few minutes ago, my friend called me from our little courtyard in our building. She had gone out to smoke (yeah, I'm workin' on that, cuz I want her to be around a loooooooooong time) She was frantic. "Come down right now There's a hummingbird on the ground." Ran down the steps as fast as I could, and there in the middle of a circle of my friends and others who were trying to create shade, was a tiny rubythroated hummer. I knelt down to see if there were any apparent injuries, and couldn't see any. I scooped him up in my hand and sat on the grass in the shade. Little hummers have to fan themselves with their wings, and this little one would have expired quickly had he been left sitting on the hot bricks in the sun. We theorized that he had struck a window or the glass walls. They're like mirrors, and birds see the sky and landscape and trees reflected in them, and often fly into the windows and walls. Just hate that.

We all sat and watched in wonder as the little one tried his wings very carefully. His eyes were bright and shiny black. After a few very cautious buzzes, he elevated himself a few inches, and came back down to rest. He tried again, this time resting on my arm. Tried again, this time resting on my shoulder. My friend said the magic prayer, "God, if your hand is on the sparrow, please put your hand on this little one". I was thinking of a couple of special angels I knew. I stood up and walked to a tree nearby, and this time he flew to a branch. He sat for a few seconds, and then elevated again, hovered a few seconds, as though he wanted to acknowledge those who cared for him and loved him if only for a few minutes, and flew far out of sight.

The miracles are everywhere. Sometimes we have to look extra hard, but they're there.

Love to all
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,

I loved your story about the hummingbird. I'm so glad you were there to save him!

That reminds me of a an amazing bird experience that happened to me several years ago. I was outside one morning and happened upon a baby bird that had obviously fallen out of his nest. He wasn't a tiny bird, he looked healthy but small. I was careful not to touch him, and carefully picked him up with a soft hand towel. I placed him inside an old parakeet cage I had kept around just in case a baby bird needed rescuing. Once the bird was safe inside the cage, I put in a small dish of water and proceeded to try and feed him some Gerber rice cereal and water through an eyedropper. (A vet had told me rice cereal would work well to feed baby birds, and it does.) The bird ate some of the rice cereal, which made me happy. I placed the cage in my bedroom on a dresser that sat underneath a window. Since it was a nice Spring day, I opened the window to let in the cool, fresh air. I closed the door to keep my cats out, and went about my day. Later that afternoon, I went back into the room to check on the baby bird. Amazingly, he was chirping loudly and moving about the cage! I noticed there was a bird outside on the grass below the window chirping toward the window. I wondered if this bird outside might be the baby's mommy. I decided to take the cage outside, under the window, and open the cage door to see if the baby might fly out. I placed the cage on the grass, opened the cage door, which laid flat, and scurried away to watch from afar. As I watched, I saw the bird that had been chirping outside the window fly down near the cage. I then saw the baby bird hop onto the cage door, and then watched the two of them fly away together toward a nearby tree! I was so excited to see this mommy and baby reunited!! It was really something. I will never forget it.

Mary S. It showed a well done computerized graphic of just what happend to his hoof...I never realized it before I saw this DVD today...his entire hoof wall was gone..we all knew that..but then to 'see' it ....it's kinda like his whole foot portion sunk into what used to be his hoof...I am probably NOT describing it correctly...but it was very interesting...and when I could actually 'see' what had happened, the magnitude of this disease really hit home...
that is why I think it is so wonderful that ALL PROCEEDS go to the Laminitis Research Fund...

***Karen

That is a wonderful story about the baby bird and mommy were happily reunited.

We recently got a new canary named Frisbee who replaced our former canary (Jules) which had passed on. When Jules was still alive, we had taken a picture of Jules outside his cage and then sent the picture to a printer who superimposed Jules' picture on a small glass mirror that had initially served as the bird mirror for Jules inside his cage.

Well, when we first brought Frisbee home from the pet store, he was very unstable; we figured he missed being with his other bird friends in the cage in the pet store, or maybe it was that he was very young and missed his mommy too. Having tried different food, toys, playing music in an effort to cheer-up Frisbee (all to no avail), we finally placed the mirror with Jules' picture inside the cage and within an hour Frisbee's entire demeanor changed. He sang endlessly, worshipped the picture of Jules as if Jules was his mommy or best birdie friend.

It amazed me how a bird could feel that sense of comfort from just seeing a likeness of another bird. But, truth be told, Frisbee is no different from any human; I'm just happy Frisbee is happy now. In fact, Frisbee won't sleep at night until we turn Jules's mirror around facing away from Frisbee. Seems that Frisbee knows that Jules needs just as much rest as Frisbee does....lol.

If not for the animals, where would be all be?

John Holland Just posted this in the forum:

Here is the report I have sent to AWI and HSUS, but with some updates.
I was not going to go public with it yet, but since this thread has already done that I thought you might like the extra confirmation.

John Holland
-------------------------------------------------------------------

We have had persistent reports of Cavel International opening a new slaughter plant in Canada. This is of course their logical move. I have now spoken to a top person inside the industry (a competitor of Cavel) who confirms much of what we heard. I now have what I believe to be solid information. The reason for this cooperation is that loose horse prices are skyrocketing and there are not enough horses for all these operations (the enemy of my enemy).

The plant is an existing cattle slaughtering operation (expected). It will not operate under the Cavel name, but will be a co-op that will slaughter horses for Cavel. Planned ownership arrangements, if they are to change, are not known at this point. This is a smart move to attempt to avoid the obvious challenge the opening will present to their "irreparable harm" argument that has allowed them to have an injunction.

According to the source and the buyers, the plant has reportedly applied to be permitted to slaughter horses and has received the first level of approval but not the second. We believe that this means they are approved in Canada but not in the EU yet. It is telling its buyers that it will receive the final approval within 30 days. The kill buyers are already buying horses for the plant and they expect it to open as early as next week.

We know the plant is located in Western Canada near a town called Wolseley. Wolseley is just over an hour east of Regina and about two hours north of far Western Montana. The only plant we can find there is Nature Valley Farms (below) , and they are approved in Canada for horses. It also fits the description perfectly. It is possible that it will be renamed. I have called to ask them if they will be buying horses, but got an answering machine.

I would hope this information, when fleshed out, could be used to convince the appeals court that Cavel does not risk irreparable harm.

Best Regards,
John Holland

this is such a terrible way for Saratoga to open for the 2007 season. I am so sad for Massoud and for his connections, for dreams shattered. for the horse in dsitresss and pain.

And we know what that feels like...when will ALL tracks go to safer surfaces? I feel like a broken record...

This new slaughterhouse terrifies me. They are clearly ready for the long haul. They don't think the federal legislation will be passed. And, if it's passed, they don't think we will enforce it. They have a shiny new facility just waiting for our horses. How arrogant.

Thoroughbred Times issue 7-21-07 has two great articles in it. Universal Pictures has acquired the screen rights to a Vanity Fair article about Barbaro. It will be based on the article which focuses primarily on the attempt by the Jacksons, Matz, Dr R to come up with a humane way to stabilize the injury and save Barbaro's life. No release date yet.

The second is the inaugural class of inductees for the Delaware Wall of Fame, includes Kelso, Shoemaker, William DuPont, Jr who designed and built Delaware Park, Henry & Jane Lunger whose Christiana Stables campaigned dual champion Go for Wand and the late trainer Henry Clark.

Can't find anything on Lieutenant Danz either.
What I found on Massoud was on Thoroughbread pedigree Query. They didn't say he was euthanized.
Nothing on Lieutenant Danz. Prayers he is alright!
It's just so sad. Sorry Alex and my condolences to Graham Motion and his team for the loss of Massoud this afternoon at Saratoga.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at July 25, 2007 11:51 PM

What a sad start for Saratoga, the announcers on TVG and Sirius were pretty sure everyone was ok.
Massoud, long may you run in heaven with your Fair Hill buddy Barbaro. I remember reading the story about the day after Graham Motion's Funfair was euthanized at the Breeders Cup in 2005. The empty stall is heartbreaking for all those close to him.

So many injuries lately on the turf, Mending Fences, Three Degrees, Mayor Bozart, Hendrix, don't know what can be done to improve the turf courses, just a sad beginning to a day so many look forward to.

Good evening Family

Not that it really is.
Just checking in to see how things are going and such a roller coaster ride of emotions today.

First I have to ask. Has anyone heard from Cal?
I haven't seen him post lately, hope he is OK.

How many more do we have to loose?

So glad to read the little humming bird was OK and that Ken has a new friend. Thank you all for sharing the good stories. They were so needed today.
It breaks my heart to read your sadness.

Then there is Cavel & Canada, I am just sick, but it did not come as a big surprise. Still...

My heart goes out to all of you, my family.
My heart goes out to all of Massoud's connections. Barbaro will show you the way sweet boy.

OK, I have to go answer some emails.
What a sad day.

Love to All,

Barb's exactly right. This is a numbers game. sometimes it takes the letter being sent 3 to 4 times to the same editor before they "get it!".

Please continue to blitz. Persistence pays off.

Amazing: he knows when the soul is being called, imho...and kind of sits shiva. Animals are "different nations." I think that's why we love them so well, so long, so thoroughly...Little Oscar, going about his rounds--and the wisdom of the humans at the hospice to just let Oscar do what he does...

I too am so saddened about Massoud. Someone I love dearly just shrugged his shoulders when told about Massoud's death and said, "Well, that's racing..."

I hope to god I never say such a thing....

I am so sorry to hear about Massoud. Condolences to Graham Motion and Massoud's connections. Extremely sad.

When I was connecting to the internet, on Comcast's homepage was a link to Fox Sports and a video about tracks trying to make racing safer. Polytrack etc. The reporter was at Del Mar where they said were 19 fatalities last year. They talked briefly about polytrack. They talked about BARBARO being the "tip of the iceberg". Super sad but nice to hear his name out there making CHANGES.

I'm so sorry to read about Massoud. My sympathy to all those caring for him. Reading that was bad enough but then reading the information about Cavel really did me in. Of course we don't want our horses to be shipped to Canada for slaughter, but I can honestly say that I don't want ANY horse to go to slaughter and I don't care what country they're from. They can be Mexican, Canadian or from any other country. The horses don't know what nationality they are. I know that when we get S.311 and H.R. 503 passed in this country, I will turn my efforts into ending slaughter in Canada and Mexico. I guess I know what I'll be doing for the rest of my life.

"Hiya, FsOB!" is my usual greeting, but what an incredibly sad night. To Tim, Alex, Dr. Kathy A., and everyone affiliated with Fair Hill, my deepest sympathies as you deal with the passing of Massoud. Then I read the info that Debbie L.A. shared with us about "horse processing": simply ghastly! Must everything be for sale in the United States? And then the news about Cavel's purchase in Canada.... All I can say is that each of you renews my faith in humanity! Lor in PA shared the nice article about Edgar Prado (whom I consider a "gentle giant" among men!), Cheryl Jones provided the information about the stunned hummingbird, & Sandra spoke of the great public education that she provided in the hair salon.... What a nation - The Barbaro Nation! Peace to each of you tonight, RMH

##

Hello My TWR Famblee...It HAS been a hard day, huh?!

I am so very sad for Massoud's passing! I am sad for his owners and trainers and grooms and our own unklealex and anyone who cared for this amazing creature! I read on comments at Equine Heaven that Barbaro has already welcomed him and they were already briefing him about the next adventure with the 'view crew'....he will be forever happy at Heaven's Gate Farm...but I know it is heartbreaking for those who loved him here.

Cavel opening a new plant huh...in Canada...well, no big surprise there, I guess. But if we can get S 311 passed, I would think there are inspection stops into Canada, and I would think it might be awfully difficult to 'smuggle' truck loads of horses across those borders...or at least it BETTER be DAMN difficult!!!

We just have to remember Famblee, there are hard days...sad days...but in the long run, most days here in this house that our boy built are pretty darn good ones!!

Sleep well tonight, have wonderful dreams and tomorrow is a NEW DAY....It just MUST be a better day:)

This just in from Equine Heaven:

Gallant Secret was a gracious hostess.....Barbaro, Massoud, Ruffian and Secretariat had a lovely dinner....they listened to Massoud and he and Barbaro started telling funny stories about Fair Hill and all the mischief they would get into when the "lights went out".....message from Massoud for that, and I quote, "damn goat", "Stay out of the carrot bag!!! They're for the horses!!"

So, all in all, was a pleasant evening.....Massoud wants you to tell his "connections" that he's doing alright, thanks to Barbaro!!

I just spoke to a fellow parent(who asked me about my "I Love Barbaro" bumper sticker)today, about the hope and inspiration Barbaro brought to non-equine individuals. I will not be deterred by the bad news. Blessings,

***Prayers for Noe Garcia, Groom of Lava Man***

FOBs.....let's keep Noe Garcia in our prayers tonight. Noe is recovering in a California hospital after losing a limb in a terrible car accident yesterday as he was returning to the racetrack after a weekend visit with his family.

I understand a arrangements to create a Fund or collection at Hollywood Park to help towards Noe's recovery is being considered. FOBs should consult the DB for the latest details.

Let's not forget the groomers; they are so much a part of daily care for our horses. Grooms are the "elegance" of horse racing, and unfortunately tend to be overlooked (behind the owners, trainers and jockeys).

Pray for Noe Garcia!!

ALL BEST WISHES TO YOU, NOE, FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY from your FOBs everywhere!!!
