    Barbaro Updates: 342

    updates are now here.

Update 2219: The answer to the quiz, update 2217: Nigel is Congressman Whitfield's (very cute) dog. Terri C was first with a correct answer and the $100 goes to New Life Equine Rescue in Maryland.

Update 2218: Street Sense completed an easy half mile work at Saratoga this morning in preparation for his likely comeback race this weekend, the Jim Dandy: Street Sense Works at Saratoga, excerpt:

"All we wanted to do this morning was to let him feel the track and he came on across it well," said trainer Carl Nafzger. "He's a nice quiet horse; I already know how fast he can go, I didn't need to find out if he has speed."

"He went good," said Borel. "It's what we wanted, to see how he would handle the track, and he went across it like a bear. He's just blossomed; he was a lot more forward with me this morning. He's just an awesome horse."

Update 2217: I had a very interesting meeting in DC, interesting for me anyway. The meeting was with Congressman Whitfield and also in the meeting were Chris Heyde (SAPL), Nancy Perry (HSUS), James Robertson (Congressman Whitfield's legislative aid) and Nigel. The meeting's value was in putting faces to names and getting a better understanding of the workings of Congress and the Senate. As I talked a little about Fans of Barbaro I could tell they were very impressed with what everyone here has achieved as a group. It was cool! Anyway, I am sure the meeting will help build closer relations with groups important to the horse anti-slaughter movement. $100 to the equine welfare charity of choice for anyone who correctly identifies Nigel's role in the meeting.

Update 2216: Saratoga is loaded with stakes races each day (Subtle Aly Wins Tight One in Schuylerville), the first major stake is the Whitney Handicap, to be run on saturday and covered by ESPN: Flashy Bull succeeds Invasor for McLaughlin in Whitney, excerpt:

McLaughlin said Flashy Bull benefited from a 5 ½-month freshening that followed an off-the-board finish in the Haskell Invitational Handicap (G1) last August.

"He's just a bigger, stronger, better four-year-old than he was a three-year-old," McLaughlin said. "We’ve always liked him, obviously to take him to the Kentucky Derby, but we're seeing the real Flashy Bull this year and it's a lot of fun. He's run very well and kind of surprised us last time beating a strong group in the Stephen Foster the way he did it. He opened three or four [lengths] turning for home. The jock [Robby Albarado] might have moved a little bit early, but we got the money, so we don't complain."

Media blitz week is yielding results already: J-S LETTER: Slaughter of horses needs to end.

There will be no update from Fair Hill this morning, I am off to Washington DC for the morning.

    Good Thursday morning FOBs

Well, the week is coming to an end but there is still plenty of time to let our elected officials know that S.311 & H.R.503 MUST become the law of the land. We also have time to go after the media, hoping to get the same type of coverage that the Michael Vick story got. The legislators must hear public outrage regarding horse slaughter.

    Have a wonderful day!

Godspeed to all who are travelling today, those who are meeting with Congress, all who are lending support of any kind and especially to all who race today.

One way we can support all of our combined efforts is to save some money. All I propose is that each FOB set aside One Dollar each week. We had 600 plus FsOB at DelPark in April; if each one saved $1/week, at the end of a year we'd have $31,200 plus!

Does anyone else think that would be enough for a down payment on some land to make a permanent home/rescue facility/safe haven/vacation B&B (the Barbaro B&B?) for the "unwanted" horses ending slaughter will leave?

For the love of the Horse,

    RIDE FOR THE CURE!

Hello everyone! Been a long time. Work, a brief deployment and a few other things have taken me away. A dear friend of our family and a political supporter of horse slaughter, Therese Hillman, will be riding her horse for Breast Cancer. Therese is the wife of Reed Hillman, who assisted us in the political arena of horse slaughter in Massachusetts (he is a former State Rep). If you would like to donate, I have posted a RIDE FOR THE CURE in the general area of chat and discussion. You can easily open the link, click on donate and plug in a credit card number to help. Your name and donation will appear in the scrolling list following your donation. These folks are wonderful people and Therese has rescued horses on her own. Thanks for your help and I hope all of you are doing well! I will be up at Del. Park again next year four our reunion!

    ###Harriette,
We can do it! I know we can. You've already done so much, I'm honored that you noticed. I deeply appreciate your words of wisdom from the grandfaters. I learn so much from them.

I think the B&B idea was yours wasn't it? We just need a "banker and lawyer" now. Someone to set up the "fund" and someone to do the legal work. I just know we have a banker FOB here; think we could get CJ to start practicing again? lol I think she's happy with her music.

Do we have any volunteers? Just think what we could do with $31,000 plus a year! Let's bring the Barbaro Bunk and Breakfast to life!

    Good Morning FOB's

    Strategy for Thursday July 26…….IMPORTANT

Due to the fact that we are waiting for some changes in strategy at any moment, we will not be posting lists today. We have been asked to wait for verification before we post any details. At the risk of seeming “secretive” we must honor that request. Please understand and work with us.

We need everyone to be on “HIGH ALERT” and ready to jump into action very quickly. If this change of events should happen, WE WILL HAVE A VERY SMALL WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY and will need an all out blitz with everyone involved.

If this should take another direction, we will resume our lists tomorrow.

Those of you who wish to make calls while we are waiting, please concentrate on the House and NOT the Senate this week. State leaders will be sending instructions to their groups also.

Thank you for your patience and your dedication. Hopefully, this will be a big week for us!!!

Please check back on the site often on today for updates.

    ### Michael Vick arraignment today. . .a link to some cartoonists views worth checking out:

    http://www.cagle.com/news/VicksDogFight/main.asp

Just learned today that HBO has been working the last 6 months on a documentary on dog fighting which will debut August 14th which an insider described as showing the "people" involved in the sport as "sub-human". Let's hope that this momentum can carry over and that the brutality of horse slaughter can be exposed to a larger audience by our national media. Timing is everything. . .

Posted by: Maribel at July 26, 2007 2:17 PM

The National Horse Protection Coalition took a full page ad out in the Daily Racing Form yesterday. It was widely read because the opening day of Saratoga is one of the most popular all year -

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION, AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCATION AND AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF EQUINE PRACTITIONERS.

STAND UP AND TAKE A BOW

DUE TO YOUR EFFORTS TENS OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN HORSES HAVE BEEN KILLED ANNUALLY IN FOREIGN-OWNED SLAUGHTERHOUSES AND SENT ABROAD FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

We could go into detail about the treatment these horses receive in transport, in the holding pens and during the actual slaughter process but in the interest of good taste, we won't go there. Suffice to say what happens to these horses ranges from casual brutality to extreme cruelt. We have a few words to say about these groups.

The American Quarter Horse Association has never polled its members on how they feel about horse slaughter. And we wonder why the AQHA insists on keeping them in the dark about this brutal practice. Our own attempts to inform their membership about this practice have been thwarted, our gentlemanly ads making the case against horse slaughter for human consumption have been rejected by the AQHA magazine. We're guessing that the AQHA position that horses are mere "livestock" would come as news to much of their membership and to the owners of Traveler, Scout, Silver, Scout, Trigger, Champ, Secretariat and Barbaro. (When was the last time you heard of a cow with a name?)

We think it's time for the AQHA to show some respect for their members and the American people. It's time for this organization to publicly show its hand. It's reprehensible to gush sentimentally about horses while you have a back door open leading to the slaughter house. This can no longer be swept under the rug.

As for the veterinarians, our quarrel is not with them individually (most are our stuanch allies) but rather with the political organizations that purport to represent them. The pitiful positions of the AVMA and AAEP rest on two points - that some of the slaughtered horses might have been in bad homes had they been allowed to live and that horse slaughter is nothing more than a form of humane euthanasia. We find these positions terminally insensitive and hypocritical and reject the contention that our position qualifies us as extreme "animal rights activists." We'd like to remind these organizations that our own board includes vets and even a few hunters, but not a single vegetarian.

We hear lot these days in the public discourse about taking an "up or down vote" on this matter or that. How about the AQHA, the AMVA and the AAEP taking an up or down vote with their memberships on the matter of the slaughter of American horses for human consumption abroad? Or is the outcome of that vote a foregone conclusion? Find out what you can do to help. Go to www.horse-protection.org.

Let's keep the faxes and phones ringing today as we remember all the horses waiting in line at Cavel or enduring brutal trips to Canada or Mexico. This is not acceptable.

I would just love it if the Atlanta Falcons and the courts come down on Mr. Michael with both fists...wouldn't he have a fun time in federal prison. And all for what: money. MONEY> Unless he got off on seeing the dogs destroyed at the end. There is such a sickness in the heart of America. That we turn our faces from dog fighting, cock fighting, the dark sides of show jumping, horse racing, and nearest to my heart;dog racing....

Sometimes I despair that these things can be fixed...who was it who wrote last night: Elizabeth T., I think, that she now know what she'd be doing the rest of her life: fighting horse slaughter.
The confidence of the damned Belgian-owned concerns and as she put it, their shiny, new slaughter house in Canada, scare the hell out of me too...

I almost went onto yet another anti horse slaughter site last night, but realized I would have to see my beautiful white mare having her spinal cord cut yet again...and shut the computer down for the night. It's too much some days...

Please keep your hearts on fire to end this horrific practice of HS. Yesterday, I had some really heartfelt thank-yous from little girl aides to AL senators and Reps...somehow we have to be getting through. We just must be getting through.

Keep on keeping on, my dears. Life is precious. Life is short. Keep marching...

trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Pennsylvanians, are you willing to be a voice for our horses? Will you help us end horse slaughter and inhumane transportation for good?

Soon they will kill even more of our horses in Canada, if we don't get this legislation passed. The horses will endure a longer ride to their deaths...I cannot live with this idea.

There are 4 or 5 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and assist in strategically targeting our PA Senator and Reps. I don't know if Elizabeth Thompson said anything about fighting horse slaughter for the rest of her life, but I know I did. I came to that conclusion awhile ago, just never posted it before last night. I don't want horses from ANY country to face such a horrific death. I want it stopped EVERYWHERE but know that we need to start here in the U.S. But I won't give up after H.R.503 and S.311 are passed, the fight will just move somewhere else.

I just finally had time last night (CA time) to read the comments here....and I, along with so many others, want to say a big FAT "THANK YOU" to all three of you for your wonderful 'burb' stories yesterday!!!!

When I was very young...a VERY long time ago...My Grandma used to help out baby birdies..my Dad built her a VERY large outdoor aviary...people would bring baby birdies or hurt birdies to my Grandma and she'd get them, for the most part, all fixed up and return them to the wild.

One day, someone brought her a baby Quail...she fed it and watered it and took good care of it, but the little Quail wasn't very perky...so my Grandma went into town to the Feed Store and came back with a baby chick:) She put the baby chick into the Avairy and, like Frisbee:), the Quail took on a whole new attitude with life!!

Everywhere the chick went, Quail would follow around...all perky and happy...she named the chick..."Chick" and the Quail became "Trailer"...my Grandma said, "they need someone to follow"...I do not remember what ever became of either of those birds...but I have always rememberd my Grandmother's kindness to allllll her 'feathered frens'....ALL of my famblee were peeples who "got it"....and I, thankfully, NEVER stood a CHANCE in this life of NOT 'getting it':)

I would have posted this last night, but things were beginning to 'head south' on comments so I waited 'til this morning:)

    Hi Everyone:
The Farm bill will soon be discussed and Representative Ed Whitfield may introduce H.R. 503 as part of the discussion. Perhaps as an amendmendment.
Let's keep our eye on this (CSPAN). (Yawn)!
So there is the potential of movement here. Remember, Rep. Whitfield is our biggest proponent. Let's watch and support!
    Thanks,
    Daryl

    IMPORTANT.....

Sorry guys, I just got a call. Todays strategy did not go as planned. They were trying to attach an amendment to the Farm Bill which would have been brought up for debate today. However, the Rules Committee did NOT accept the amendment.

I know how disappointed you all are but it's important now to stay focused. Please concentrate on calling House Members and asking them to support HR503 or ANY AMENDMENT that may come up that would end horse slaughter.

And know that many of our legislators are working hard in DC to make this happen. This is the reason that we needed to wait for a definite answer and NOT jump the gun with information.

We will begin posting lists again tomorrow.

I am concerned, If they were going to try to attach the Slaughter bill to the Farm one, are they concerned that the Slaughter Bill can not stand on its own and get passed?

That is the "message" I am getting from that maneuvering...

Wrote a small story about Michatl Vick, and why

he's in so much trouble, it's really quite simple.

I recently read that there are 73 million dog

owners in the United States, people who consider

their dogs as a part of there immediate family.I

think Vicks problems started when he went against

this old axiom, that says."You don't pull on

Superman's cape" "You don't spit into the

wind""You don't pull the mask off the old Lone

Ranger""And you don't mess around with them",

They're just trying to get the bill to the floor via the most efficient route. We're on the outside, so we'll likely not know the reasons behind the choices that are made, but the bottom line: People on the inside are working very hard to make this happen...and our assignment is to support them however we're asked.

Carol Nichols....here is my letter e-mailed just a few minutes ago...

    July 26, 2007

    Dear Mr. McReynolds,

It is my understanding that you sent a reply to a friend of mine regarding a letter she sent you about helping to stop horse slaughter. Your reply, stated the letter wouldn’t be printed.

None of us expected the letters to be published, Mr. McReynolds, we were hoping you, or others in your profession might be interested in writing an article about the travesties of horse slaughter in America, or for that matter, Canada and Mexico.

I am very sad to read that you won’t publish the letter, and take that to mean you won’t be writing an article on the subject, either.

We are seeking the help of our Congressional Representatives and Senators to pass into law HR 503 and S 311, The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. S 311 would STOP horses being taken across Canadian and Mexican borders and FINALLY end horse slaughter once and for all.

Are you aware, Mr. McReynolds, that each year in this country 30K hoses are stolen for slaughter? Are you aware that each year in this country 100K horses are slaughtered? The meat is sent to Europe for wealthy diners to ingest.

Horses are not raised like cattle, pigs, sheep or chickens for agricultural purposes of feeding people. These horses, the ones not stolen, simply find themselves ‘unwanted’ and often, their owners are unknowingly selling them to ‘kill buyers’.

There are hundreds of horse rescue facilities scattered throughout our country and thousands of people like myself willing to donate money and time needed to give them medical attention and support them until good, loving homes are found for them…..Loving homes they all so deserve.

After all Mr. McReynolds, America was primarily settled on horseback!

    Sincerely,

    Lynne Brown
    Sonora, CA

Donna, I dont know why they race horses at two. I am fairly new to this so I guess there is a reason. Does anyone know? anyway, I hope Vick gets the maximum sentence. If people abuse an animal (horses, dogs. cats, etc) I think they will do it to a child. I wouls be glad to donate $1.00 a week for the B&B. would probably go 20-25 a month. It would be such a tribute to Barbaro. This is part of his legacy. Like the Vanity Fair article said he ran with joy as he almost flew. I dont know why he had to have the accident. God knows and maybe it was meant to happen but how I wanted him to live and go into retirement and be happy and pain free. He was so loved by his people and I cant even imigine what they felt on Jan 29th. well, I guess I have said enough. Just missing Barbaro.

WHERE IS CARE 2? I CANNOT TAKE IT ANYMORE. THESE POOR ANIMALS. I JUST RECENTLY READ AN ARTICLE IN A PETA MAGAZINE ON HOW A POOR COW WAS ABSOLUTELY TORTURED. AN ANIMAL ACTIVIST CALLED POLICE AND A VET. THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING. IT WAS A DOWNED COW ON ITS WAY TO SLAUGHTER. THEY SAID IT BELONGED TO THE MEAT COMPANY AND THEY COULD DO NOTHING. THIS COW WAS TORTURED UNTIL 7:30 AT NIGHT WHEN THE BUTCHER APPARENTLY CAME AND SHOT IT(ONLY BECAUSE THE ACTIVIST WOULD NOT BACK DOWN). I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND PEOPLE AND HOW THEY CAN BE SO HEARTLESS!! I WILL ALSO DONATE TO THE B&B.

Just heard on Fox News as they were showing Vick arriving for his hearing that "Sheriff Joe" in Arizona, who is very active in animal rights (wonder if it's the Joe that Barb Z and her group talked to) is investigating a dog fighting operation in Arizona and he said Vick is a "person of interest."

Subtle Aly, the filly who won the Schuylerville yesterday was bred here in Florida by David and Theresa Palmer, owners of Storm in May.

Keep calling and don't give up, Barbaro never did and neither can we.

    Yes - barb m -
it's the same Sheriff Joe Arpaio - who has been very supportive to our HS issues. He's already written 2 letters of support which have been distributed to all legislators. Arizona FsOB met with him personally earlier this year. He's quite a guy ... and an amazing friend to the animals !

Donna, have not seen an answer to your racing ??? if I missed sorry. They race them so young because of dollars just plain greed. The faster they get on the track the faster the return. It is just plain economics at its worst! Europe thru the decades waited til horses were more mature but they are sliding down to our level which is a shame.Wish it had gone the other way.

On a good note look how fast people responded to the tragic burning of the dog on Long Island. I'm just sorry the cops got him first!

REALITY CHECK FROM JOE IN WOODLAND, CA...JOE HAS SEEN IT ALL...& STILL KEEPS ON KEEPIN'ON. HOW CAN WE DO LESS....
    **************************************************
    Thursday, July 26th...
Up before the roosters, and we are cold and foggy. Weird. Yesterday was warm, and the radio continues to predict a massive heat wave. But the ocean fog is here, and a jacket was needed to do the morning barn check. Our shoer Tim Gee comes today. A gelding from a feed lot comes today. A young girl who wants to ask me questions comes today. She is curious. And I will bet the farm I already know what those questions are.

Because the same questions come all the time, and I am more than happy to answer.

Pressly lives in a place called Baldwin Park, and on the phone she wants to know how can I possibly associate with horse killers?

I just buy horses from them. We do not jump into a hot tub together.

Alanna lives in Michigan, and she wants to know what the going rate for a doomed horse is?

Right now we pay between 35 and 45 cents a pound. Depends on the killer you are buying from. We also have to pay shipping fees, and we include those fees when you adopt a horse from us. We only ask for our money back, and owners are usually puzzled when we tell them the price of a horse. $937.50. Or $826.30. We recently sold a gelding for $888.80.

Julie lives in Arizona, and she says I recently wrote about a horse being cast. What is cast?

Horses do this all the time. They lay against a stall wall, or a fence, or panels in a round pen. Suddenly there is no room to throw out their feet and stand. They are stuck like an upside down turtle. You have to be careful of 4 flying feet when you help a horse become uncast.

Katie Marlow we have known for a long time. On the phone Katie wants to know how I emotionally handle not saving them all. How can I pet a doomed horse at a feed lot and then walk away?

Tbfriends stands for thoroughbred friends. We rescue thoroughbreds. I love all horses, always have. And lately trips to feed lots have grown more difficult. The sadness never ends, yet it was suppose to. When slaughter was stopped in America I truly believed feed lots would go out of business. Instead they are thriving like never before. And so lately I have been buying doomed thoroughbreds over the phone. Instead of a personal visit. The frustration can be overwhelming. Two and three cattle trailers filled with horses are leaving Northern California each week. The horses are butchered in Mexico and British Columbia. A cattle trailer with 17 horses left yesterday morning.

Because of a rogue reputation, there are killers who will no longer sell horses to me. Not even for a bigger profit than they would have earned from a slaughter house. This website does not earn me brownie points with a horse killer. Some tolerate, some could care less. And there are those who would like to see me go away.

I suppose I danced around the question from Katie. I cannot explain what it is like to leave a horse standing in his own muck, knowing in a day or so that horse will experience a brutal death. There are no words to describe the personal hurt. Years ago I quit moaning about what an unfair world this is. How can we, in a country where freedoms were in part given to us by horses, how can we allow disgraceful death by slaughter? There is no solace from the 400 or so horses we rescue each year. Because it is not about the horses we save. It is about the horses we cannot save.

One more question, this one from Amy in Pleasanton. Can she come help? Maybe walk horses, or scoop poop?

I wish. For years we had students from UC Davis coming to clean our stalls, and help with rehabbing a race horse. But liability insurance continued to rise, and now Cathy and I can no longer afford the insurance premiums. We have never filed a claim for a horse related injury. Yet the costs keep growing.

Enjoy your who knows what temp Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. A special hello to Katie Cooper, and I wish we could be there on Sunday. Cathy and I will be doing chores on another ranch. Earning the big bucks. Hit one out of the park Katie...
    Joe

(picture captions below....go to the site to see the pix)

93 degrees yesterday, and for a full second there was not one pile of poop in the north field.

Below on the right is 6:00 this morning. Cold and foggy. The coffee is from Peets, and the glazed doughnut is several days old. Gave most of it to Pony Boy.

My cell number is 530-383-2120. Call any old time.

For tomorrow, Debra has asked that we all re-do our own state, time, energy permitting ! (LOL)

I will be doing South Dakota as well. If a few of you want to do South Dakota also, it wouldn't hurt.

I heard everybody talking about Sheriff Joe. He is QUITE a guy, and a friend of animals. I remember a story (Don't know if it is true, so don't call the authorities!) when Sheriff Joe had a couple of fellows in his "Tent City" jail out in the desert. They had been convicted of animal cruelty in neglecting some horses who had no food or water. Sheriff Joe sauntered up to them, leading the horses, and gave the horses some water, but didn't give the prisoners any !

I just put away my first Loonie. Every Thursday I'll put one away and once a month I'll put away a Toonie to cover the exchange rate. I think a FOB B&B & rescue ranch is a great idea. In a year, I hope many many other FOB have done the same thing.

    Donna 6:06:

I ask these questions too, not because I need answers, because the answer is the $$. All the bad news here was making me sick with worry and I've felt helpless and hopeless, and useless, because my hands are tied. I'm not American. I can't help.

I had to decide to accept the things I can't change and change the things I can. When I feel low, I donate to save/feed/vet a horse. This works for me.

I hope you can find your way.

incredibly, there are TWO cases of pitbull mixes being burned...one in LI the other in Dallas...
I'll say it again, there is something sick at the core of our country....

It's too bad that we don't employ "and eye for an eye" here, in the manner of punishment. A "man" who would do such a thing to an animal, statistically will move to child/wife abuse with ease.

    Heartbreaking.

Posted by: jonnagrey at July 26, 2007 11:17 PM

Wow, I've been off line for a while. I must say, I'm impressed! FsOB are saving internationally! I can't take credit for the B&B idea, that belongs to other minds. But I LOVE the idea!

Can you just picture it? At least 100 acres with trails for riding, horses of all breeds everywhere, a nice place to bunk your body at the end of the day. We have gourmet chefs here, so the eating will be great too! We'll go through apples, carrots and peppermints by the ton!

All we need now is a banker to step up and help us make this money go! One dollar a week is all it'll take. It's not too much. Pocket change counts too.

A home for all horses. What could be better?

For the love of the Horse,

    Shelly & Karen....

Shelly....thx! I had to re-write a couple of times to make it not sound too angry!! I am sick of these media people telling us about Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan and what the stars are wearing to the red carpet affairs....and the STUPID reality shows on TV....there are horses being heinously murdered to benefit the bellies of rich Eurpoeans and pocketbooks, of in my opinion, greedy 'sick-o' people here!! It's like slaughtering dogs or cats in my book...they are pets!!! Or at least they SHOULD be! They surely deserve better than ending up on a kill floor!!

For the LIFE of me, I don't understand why the media won't discuss horse slaughter enough to bring it to the attention of the general public..but that is apparently the way it is...so, I will keep marching, faxing...e-mailing and making my calls....People who know lots more than I do keep saying, "look at the big picture"...and I respect them very much...so I will 'keep on keepin' on'...like one of our OWN always says:)

    ##

Karen....Thanks! My Grandma is in Hevvin smiling realllllly big at your 'loving her'....she was a great woman...and she just LOVED all creatures....'specially burbs!!! We had Canaries and 78RPM records playing 'singing canaries' for hours on end in the house....so her Canaries would learn to sing!!!

One day someone brought her a little Sparrow...he was SO young...no feathers....his little eyes weren't even open yet...He was UGLY...:-0 But my Grandma fed him boiled egg yolk on a toothpick and water from an eyedropper....kept him in a bird cage in a 'nest' she fashioned from, I can't remember what now....he grew up:) She named him "Peeper".....our front door had a brass 'door' in it to open and look out to see who might be knocking...my Grandpa took some balsa wood and fashioned a 'runway' in that opening...Every morning, Peeper would fly to the door and go outside....and be a 'burb' all day long:) In the afternoon around 4-5P, Grandma would stand in the big doorway..hollering, "Peeeeeper....Peeeeeper" and sure enough, Peeper would come in for the night....she made the newspaper in Salinas because of that little burb:) He was with us for some time....can't remember just how long...then...horrors of horrors...one day my Mother's cat got Peeper!!!! OMG!!! It was just SO awful!!!! I know my sweet Grandma NEVER forgave the cat!!! And I'm pretty sure she 'raised a glass' the night the cat died!!! LOL!!!

O.K. there!!! Now there is another story about my sweet Grandma:) She used to call me her "little Chickadee"....she's been in Hevvin for almost 35 years now...but I just 'tellya'...she would have been right here with us ALL, 'cause she would have just LOVED Barbaro:)

    Oh Lynne,

Your story about your Grandma and Peeper is really something! To think she saved him from an immediate and almost certain demise and nursed him to full health!! He must have been so cute on his little runway! Your Grandpa must have been very special, too, for creating the runway for him. I'm so sorry Peeper had to meet such a terrible end with the cat, poor baby. Still, it's amazing to know he was able to not only survive, but to grow into a healthy bird who would come when you Grandma called him! Wow! She certainly had a gift, didn't she?! Looks like it's passed down through the genes as you, too, are a great animal lover. Don't think for a minute that she is not smiling down on you Lynne. She probably knows Barbaro, too, up there in heaven. What a beautiful place it must be.

    Thanks for sharing!

    PANACEA:

Drive to Vickie's Treats and stand in line for a hot fudge sundae. So hot here, I was DRINKING the melted ice cream off before I got into the confines of my AC'd van.

But you know, I do feel better. \I knew I would. Tomorrow is another day...more blitzing, a call in to one of our local news people who is quite a horsewoman and who has always been a strong advocate for the greyhounds...i will email the LETTER to Laura and see if she bites...

Tonight, I will watch a little TV, try to figure out how to crank more cool air out of my weenie window AC unit, hug the greyhounds and try to sleep knowing what is going on in our wonderful country, where "people" try to kill foals at Cavel with equipment meant for full-grown steer...where "people" burn animals alive..where 102 greyhounds grading off at Hinsdale GH track in NH need homes,
where my friend Nancy--one of my sterling volunteers is battling cancer AGAIN: leukemia this time...

On it goes, so I eat a hot fudge sundae for dinner, hug the puppies, go to bed, get up, make strong coffee and start blitzing...

Prayers for all who mourn: still thinking about Cowboy and Nick, and the people who tried so, so, so very hard to bring them back to life...

We are the Barbaro Nation. We can't be defeated. We'll be doing this stubborn calling, faxing, emailing and kvetching till we're in our damned walkers...we will bring horse slaughter to it's filthy knees...

So, remember, when all else fails, every little town in the world has it's own Vickie's Treats. Go forth, my dears, and indulge. Life is short. Hot fudge and ice cream are part of the joy...IMHO>

An evening greeting to Barbaro, our hosts, and my fellow Fans!

I've sent out instructions to the Maine Mob for tomorrow. (Any potential members can contact me through the DB.) Very disappointed that we didn't get to jump into action today but I know that the wheels in Washington turn at about the same speed as those in academia! To sooth myself, I too used the ice cream cure - in my case it was a Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia bar. Worth the $$ and the calories!

    ###
Robyn Hoffmann - I'm still here, just a little more in the background than before, but still reading daily. Thanks for thinking of me!

    ###
Sophie7675 - Where do I apply to be the librarian at the B & B?Or maybe the record-keeper? Or the gardener? (I think that covers all my recent careers!)

Condolences to all of the connections of Massoud. A sad start to what should have been a great meet at Saratoga, my favorite track...a real classic. Someday I will get back there.

Sweet and peaceful dreams and easy rest to all tonight. Tomorrow is another day in the battle.

(Don't you just know that the pro-slaughter idiots and swine just purely HATE this kind of mutual admiration???!)

GET OVER IT, YOU NON-HUMANS. THE BARBARO NATION IS HERE TO STAY. WITH A DETERMINATION--THE LIKES OF WHICH YOU HAVE NEVER, EVER SEEN. TAKE A LOOK AT GRETCHEN JACKSON IN THE VANITY FAIR ISSUE ON HER BIG WHITE TB. DOES SHE LOOK LIKE SHE'S EVER GIVEN UP ON ANYTHING IN WHICH SHE BELIEVED? THAT'S THE LADY, BOYS. WE FOLLOW HER CUES.

    HA. GIVE IT UP. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

O.K., Barbaro fans. I could use some help here. Here is the reply I just got from the media blitz:

"Out of curiosity, what are you going to do with all of those unwanted
horses? Do you want them at your house?"

SORRY JONNA FOR SPELLING YOUR NAME WRONG BEFORE. I JUST NOTICED. I DO NOT USUALLY POST HERE, BUT I ALWAYS READ. I THINK ALL OF YOU ARE GREAT. ALL OF YOU "GET IT", EVERYONE AT MY JOB THINKS I AM NUTS. IT IS VERY COMFORTING TO COME HERE AND SEE THAT OTHER PEOPLE TRULY CARE ABOUT ANIMALS. I JUST LOOKED UP THAT OTHER STORY ABOUT THE DOG IN DALLAS. I OUGHT NOT TO HAVE DONE THAT. THEY NAMED HER MERCY AND SHE WAS A 10 MONTH OLD PIT MIX THAT WAS BURNED, STABBED AND DRAGGED, SHE EVENTUALLY DIED. I AM MORTIFIED. I WILL BE LIGHTING CANDLES FOR BOTH MERCY AND MAXIMUS, EVEN THOUGH THAT SEEMS SO LITTLE.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I loved your story about the visit to Capitol Hill. How great to meet Nigel Whitfield! Wishing everyone refreshing slumbers followed by a productive day tomorrow. Any news about Rags to Riches check-up at NBC would be greatly appreciated tomorrow. Peace, RMH

    ### To Lynne Brown: What an awesome lady your grandmother was! I loved the story about Quail & Peeper (except that the cat got Peeper in the end!). What nice memories you must treasure.
    Hello, Amie!
To jonnagrey! My version of "Vickie's Treats" was a glass of Casal Garcia wine with dinner. Enjoy your treat, jonna, you deserve it! ####

Sirius At the Races had a great interview today with Buff Bradley about the history of Brass Hat. His first race he was in for a claiming tag then he was gelded because his breeding was average and they never expected him to be a stakes winner. He has an awesome heart and is a true rags to riches story coming back from many injuries. What a great Whitney with him, Papi Chullo and my favorite, Flashy Bull. "The Bull" ran against Barbaro 3 times last year.

Larry King's show tonight on CNN was about pitbulls and had a beautiful pitbull on the show the entire time while interviewing his owner, a dog trainer. Way too much abuse suffered by our loyal friends, horses and dogs.

Robyn Hoffman and Dee:) Yes! My Grandma was quite a woman!! She was a single mom back before the Great Depression...worked hard all her life, but always found time for the critters:) Bless her Heart!

She was placed in a Convent at some point in time as a young girl...they were teaching her to play the piano...she LOVED "Rag Time" songs and would play them....the Nuns would come 'round and crack her on the knuckles for playing that kind of music...but she grew into quite a great "Rag Time" piano playing lady anyway..and even stayed a devout Catholic:)

When she got older, but I was still a young girl, I think she was in her mid-50's when I was born. I remember her rheumatoid arthritis was pretty horrid...she'd wake up in the mornings barely able to move her fingers..she would go sit at the piano and belt out that rag time music..sometimes with tears rolling down her cheeks it hurt so bad...but by the time she had played a few songs, the fingers were good to go for the rest of her day! She had a rose garden and she would tend it very lovingly and had beautiful roses for her labor!

I loved her very much and like to think I did get some of her genes...she had a great sense of humor and if life threw her lemons, she pretty much made lemonade:)

This has been awfully nice, Famblee, nice for me to recall and write about this most special woman in my life for a good many years! Thanks for this opportunity.

I'm sorry. I have sinned. I lashed out in anger. I let her have it!
(Don't worry. I didn't lower myself to use any cuss words.)

I guess I was just so SICK of the inane responses we get about the "unwanted" horses, that I lost my cool !
I've been a naughty little girl.

I let MS Cindy have the full impact of my resolve, my restraint ebbing every day I hear this.

Although I didn't call her any names, I didn't flatter MS. Cindy much either. I don't want to post my response here. If you want to hear it, email me.

#Lynne, our Big Boss Horse was 6/1 as the horses were being loaded into the gate. They mention it on the NBC replay of the Kentucky Derby. I think I can call the race in my sleep now,its such a pleasure to rewatch!
