Barbaro Updates: 343

updates are now here.

Update 2224: Nautical Agent was fourth tonight at Colonial Downs. She was well off the pace, appeared to get stopped as she was making a run, and then had to be redirected to the outside for her final run. She was beaten a length and a half for second. Its storming here at Fair Hill.

Update 2223: Rags to Riches is now back at Belmont Park after a two day stay at New Bolton: Rags to Riches Returns to Belmont, excerpt:

The results of the exam will be reviewed by Dr. Paul Thorpe, the attending veterinarian for owners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, said Pletcher, adding that "Dr. Thorpe will be flying in from Ireland (July 28) to go over the results with us. If everything checks out, well she could still make the Alabama."

Update 2222: A fun article on Funny Cide's new role: A Day at the Spa: July 27, Pony Cide, excerpt:

We keep an eye on Funny Cide while he's on the track. There are spurts of the old racehorse fire -- fiercely pinned ears when a stablemate gets too close, a bow-necked snorting moment when Tagg moves him into a canter down near the first turn. For the most part, however, Funny Cide has adjusted to his new life. He even accepts goodwilled pats on the nose before ferrying his stablemate off the surface.

Update 2221: A warm morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had three to ride, two for Tim and one for Linda. First out was Real Lace, her first outing since her last race. She was to jog two miles on the dirt track. She went nicely and appeared no worse for her most recent race. Tim was on Who's Happy, on the Tapeta track jogging / hacking around. She is running tomorrow at Philadelphia Park in a stake. Next out was Mass Romantic, she went to the Tapeta track, and she galloped a mile and a quarter. Very nicely. Tim came out with Whip Smart, Amanda was on Luke supervising the training. Whip Smart did a little work. Finally I rode Linda's Precious Partner. She breezed a half mile on the Tapeta track, likely my last breeze at Fair Hill. She went nicely, 2 13s and 2 12s.

Nautical Agent is running this afternoon at Colonial Downs, so lets hope she puts in another good effort. Her last effort at Colonial Downs appeared better. Redaspen is also running tomorrow, she will be favorite for her stakes race. A big weekend for Tim, and nothing to do with my imminent departure!

Media blitz week continues.

Update 2220: TeresaNY provides an update on Saratoga after day two: Today at Saratoga, excerpt:

It is a Saratoga tradition that at about a minute to post before the first race, Tom Durkin, the track announcer, coaches us to announce the beginning of the meet. He reminded all of us that this is the 139th season of racing at Saratoga (the oldest meet in the country, though not uninterrupted--racing began in 1863), and got even the most cynical in the crowd to join him in announcing, "And they're off at Saratoga!" as the starting gate opened for the first race.

The Whitney Handicap, to be run tomorrow afternoon and on ESPNs two hour coverage, is a full field as older horses attempt to fill the void established by the retirement of Invasor: Full Whitney field will vie for divisional supremacy and With Invasor Out, the Whitney's Anyone's Race.

Wow, am I 2nd today? May each of you have a productive day today! I am very excited that I've been able to reserve pass for Brent and "yours truly" to attend a "farm dinner" benefit on 08/10/2007 at the Mitchell Farm Equine Center in Salem, CT. I hope to get to give some "scritches" to Dandy, Remi, and Ray of Light that evening. If any CT FsOB are interested in attending, you may reserve space by calling the River Tavern in Chester, CT. Jonathan Rabb from the Tavern will be the chef at Mitchell Farm on the 10th. Peace, RMH

Missing Barbaro!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Carol Nichols at July 27, 2007 12:39 PM

Barb AZ, Chunky & Punky: Sent an email to Cyndi, hope this helps. How frustrating these people are!

Cyndi,

I am appalled at your response in regards to unwanted horses and if someone wanted them at their house. Have you ever witnessed the slaughter of a horse? The fear they sense and smell? The blood the slip and break legs on? The bolts to the neck and head which miss? Many are still alive when they slip on blood, have a chain hooked into ONE leg and are hung upside down, throats slit to bleed out, WHILE THEY ARE ALIVE. I am an educated professional (which I assume you may be too) and cannot understand your lack of understanding of this brutal process. Horses are what established America. They fought and fight in our wars, carried our mail, our wagons across country, children through 4-H courses teaching them discipline, love and respect, help disabled adults and children and the list goes on…..

I work at Fort Bragg, NC and many soldiers here and throughout the world are on the FOB bandwagon and are Barbaro lovers. People here are smart enough to understand horse slaughter and the barbaric operations they continue with. I myself own a few racehorses and grew up around horses. Do you have an pet Cyndi? How would you feel if someone stole your pet and slaughtered it so someone in another country who probably hates America could eat it?

Now, if you were EDUCATED regarding horse slaughter. You would realize that these horses are not UNWANTED. They are usually STOLEN, from pastures. They are bought at auction as owners who bring them there believe people are buying them for good homes or children, when, IN REALITY, KILL BUYERS are buying them for slaughter. They are healthy, young, loving horses. We have rescued dozens and dozens of horses already. Many have had foals, many are helping children already. They are loving, healthy, WANTED horses.

If you would do the appropriate research into slaughter houses. You will then, and only then, understand the thieves who steal horses, portray themselves to be buyers for children or family pets so they can get BLOOD MONEY from a WANTED horse. Not only are these horse illegally obtained (we have done the research already), but they are horrendously tortured BEFORE before slaughtered, and the plants who slaughter pay almost NO taxes due to foreign corporation laws, and they employ illegal immigrants. These horses do not deserve to be slaughtered for human consumption at a foreign restaurant who advertises “Eat an Amreican Horse Here”. Horses sense fear. They are smart and they understand what is happening. .Too bad you can’t…………..

*****HI EVERYONE!!!******

Yes, it’s THAT time of the month again ... IN JUST 2 DAYS it will be July 29th ... that day when we all have the opportunity to rekindle our enthusiasm, dedication and love for Barbaro with a donation of $29.00 in his honor and memory to the Laminitis Research Fund at Upenn.

Such a small price to pay to ensure that present and future TB champions and all members of the equine species do not have to fall to the ravages of this insidious killer that takes the lives of our beloved horses, like Barbaro, all too soon.

Wouldn’t you have given $29 prior to January 29th if you had known then that you might have saved Barbaro’s life? Well we didn’t have that opportunity because time ran out on Barbaro, all too soon, but we do have all the time in the world now to make sure that Nicanor and Baby Brother might never have to experience the painful debilitation and loss of life that Barbaro did and Secretariat before him, and countless others in between.

So, please let’s make July’s Triple Crown Challenge geared toward these brothers ... If you can, donate $29, $58 or $87 in honor of Barbaro, Nicanor and Baby Brother Dynaformer so that we can stamp out laminitis once and for all ... we can kick it and we can lick it ... so please "LET’S LICK LAMINITIS" today ...

Good Morning all FsOB,

The last couple of days, I've been posting urging us all to save $1 a week so we can create a home for the "unwanted" horses ending slaughter will supposedly create. Last night, someone received an email response to the media blitz asking if she wanted "all the unwanted horses at her house;" if we save the money, we'll give the horses a home...we can tell this woman that they already have a home!

FsOB internationally have responded so far saving their dollars. Let's build the Barbaro Bunk & Breakfast. One dollar a week, it's not too much. Pocket change counts too!

We CAN DO IT!

Thank you. A wonderful, heartfelt letter to that unknowing person.

I also thank you for your work defending our country. I don't kow exactly what you do at Ft. Bragg, but I do know (as a veteran) that anything that helps our soldiers do their job is a wonderful thing. Please, next time you have a chance, thank our soldiers over at Smokebomb Hill for me. TGIF - right??

Alex - thank you for your trip to DC.
Deb G. - I ditto Sophie's comment. Bless you!

What is it going to take to wake these people up??? When I hear the legislative aides (when answering the phone) do their "OK, yes, uh-huh" in that flat tone of voice, I want to jump through the phone and grab and shake them to wake them up. They either don't understand or they don't care. Neiher are acceptable. But - I keep my tone of voice pleasant and thank them for their time.

Anyway - let's end this week with a BANG!!!

I just thought of something. When someone asks the question "do you want all the unwanted horses at your house?" The answer should be "As a compassionate society, we make provision for the unwanted dogs and cats, why can't we do likewise for any unwanted horses?" They have to learn that slaughter is NOT the solution. It is NOT the same as euthanasia, which, unfortunately is what many of them think.

All birds, even those of the same species, are not alike, and it is the same with animals and with human beings. The reason Wakan Tanka does not make two birds, or animals, or human beings exactly alike is because each is placed here by Wakan Tanka to be an independent individuality and to rely upon itself.

Please, everyone, if you can spare 1 minute of your day to light a candle for Rags to Riches. She is still at New Bolton Center undergoing a complete physical exam and we don't have any results yet. She has been there since Tuesday and we had hoped to know something either later Wednesday or Thursday, but so far she hasn't been released and neither has any information.

I always believe that "No News is Good News", so I am clinging to this affirmation, but she could really use the warmth, light and love of a candle for her well-being ... please. Thank you so much ...

Good Morning FOB's

Strategy for Friday July 27

Okay…we had a false alarm on Thursday. It was a real let down after so much anticipation. But it wonderful to see how quickly we were able to get everyone ready to rally. That’s what’s so important. We may not get much notice next time either when we are called to action!!

It’s still MEDIA BLITZ week. We’ve gotten lots of positive feedback so keep it going.

Now it’s time to move forward. Once again we must get back to the business of letting our legislators know that this federal legislation MUST be passed in order to stop the horrendous transport and slaughter of American horses!

We will be concentrating on Members of the House for the following week. Please make sure you ask them to cosponsor but ALSO ask them to support any amendment that may come up to end horse slaughter. It’s highly unlikely that this will be a “stand alone” bill and we must be prepared for it to become an amendment to other legislation.

We still urgently need people to be involved with state groups. That is the most effective way to get information out quickly. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out their spreading their message. We MUST be louder!
Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Pennsylvanians, Will you be a voice for our horses? Will you help us end horse slaughter and inhumane transportation for good?

Soon they will kill even more of our horses in Canada, if we don't get this legislation passed. The horses will endure a longer ride to meet their deaths...I cannot live with this idea.

There are 4 or 5 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and assist in strategically targeting our PA Senator and Reps. We are now 53 strong, but we need help winning over the remaining legislators from PA who have not co-sponsored. If you are willing to join our team effort email me at Lor's Email Addy.

Jen faxed me an interesting article...Horses and Ducks. Just like Ducks Unlimited (where farmers get paid to leave farmland aside to attrack breeding waterfowl, there should be Horses Limited.

This would be an organization supported by the indsutry, corporate and individual horse owners to provide financial incentives to leave their mares fallow. Bumper sticker, "Horses Limited"...farm the best, conserve the rest..

They were to thank me for taking care of Bart amidst the "attitude" here at work and to let Bart know that they were thinking of him.

Thank you for asking Kathy! Bart's numbers are still up a bit but we're going to keep him at 3 units of insulin until next week and after a couple of more readings.

Enjoy your day Kathy!

IF J0E AND CATHY OF TB FRIENDS RULED THE COUNTRY--WELL, i SAY, RULED THE WORLD. oH, GOD. i JUST LOVE THIS GUY.
****************************************************

Friday, July 27th... If I ruled America? Huh? A young girl interviewed me yesterday for a school project she is working on, and her questions were not the usual. Normally I am asked about slaughter houses and feed lots and prices per pound. This girl put me of course. She wanted to know about cartilage tissues, strangles, skeleton structure, founder, and race track steroids. When the girl was leaving she asked what would I do if I ruled America? I stumbled and stuttered and said something about a Krispy Kreme store on every corner.

Of course you always think of the best answers when it is too late. If I ruled America there would be immediate change. Issues like war and unemployment and poverty could wait for a week. My first act of power would be to tell foreign countries, if you want to eat horse meat then eat your own horses. You will never again eat an American horse. All feed lots and death camps would be shut down. All police and highway patrol would pull over any horse trailer headed south or north. Just for a peek inside. Anyone caught selling horses to slaughter, or driving horses to slaughter, would be arrested and given a 5 year prison term. Since I rule America I could even order life in prison. I guarantee horse slaughter would stop.

Allowing foreign countries to eat our horses. The ultimate betrayal.

My second act since ruling America would be to shut down all puppy mills. And how simple this would be. You go in, you take all the animals, you hang an Out Of Business sign, and lock the joint up. If they dare to once again produce puppies, you put them in prison. Simple. Maybe 5 years. Maybe life. The puppy mill convicts could dine with the horse slaughter convicts. They could play cards for cigarettes.

Anyone caught fighting a dog, fighting a rooster, abusing animals in anyway, they go to prison. It is time to begin respecting all life. It is time to for a change.

If I ruled America every school teacher would be rich. It is school teachers who shape the future of our country. Each one would have a million dollars in the bank.

And now I need to tell you about a little white mare. On the phone with a horse killer, and he says the mare is too sore to travel. Her feet hurt. Do I want her? On a long trip to slaughter she would probably lay down and be trampled. The killer paid $150.00 for the little white mare. She was living in a back yard, and her owners took the cash and never even hugged her goodbye. The killer said he needs $200.00. The little white mare is being housed at a cock fighting farm in Vallejo. I said okay.

Not far from the cock fighting farm is one of our foster moms. She is currently housing 3 of our horses. I phone and tell her the story of the little white mare. Foster mom says she will move one of her own horses outside, so the little white mare can have a stall.

Gary Duncan lives in Sacramento, and he hooks up his trailer and drives to Vallejo for the little white mare. She can barely walk. Gary Duncan is a big man, and he has to lift and push to get her inside his trailer.

Two days later, and on the phone foster mom says this is not good. The vet came, and the little white mare is suffering from rotated coffin bones. There is no cure. She is around 25 years old, probably an arabian mix. Her pain is severe. The little white mare was euthanized.

If I ruled America, young kids at school would be taught about kindness and respecting life. A required class. Millionaire school teachers would cover this subject every single day.

The young girl who interviewed me yesterday was long gone. Too late to give her my true feelings. In her paper she will probably give the Krispy Kreme response. Whatever...

Of course I will never rule America. It is all mumbo jumbo inside my head. Something to think about while watching moths crash against the barn light. I was not able to meet the little white mare. Foster mom says she was an old sweetheart. I owned her, but never met her. For two days, standing in a stall with a foot of fresh straw, the little white mare was hugged and given carrots. She was groomed. And she drank orange soda from the palm of a hand. For two days she was loved like crazy. I send a special thank you to foster mom and Gary Duncan.

A new day ahead, and time to face the chores. 101 degrees today, 103 tomorrow, 105 on Sunday. Make the most of your weekend...

Jonnagrey: That one quote, one solid quote, could and SHOULD be used for horse slaughter issues: THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL OF ANY AMERICAN POLITICIAN OR ANY AMERICAN FOR THAT FACT, TO ALLOW AMERICAN HORSES TO BE EATEN BY FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

That speaks volumes!

Hats off to Gary Duncan and the foster Mom for loving that "little white mare". Her last days were spent being loved and not being trampled to death.......amazing.

I'll take a horse in my backyard. I already have two dogs and if zoning permitted I'd shelter a horse that was going to slaughter in a New York minute! Who would make a statement like that "do you want one in your backyard?" They don't know FOB's very well.
I get it.

Tell every political office you call about the betrayal:

America allowing its own horses to be slaughtered for foreign consumption!

How pathetic..yes, the ULTIMATE betrayal. They gave and give to us and don't deserve this ending.

Thanks Jonna for posting Joe's words. If a day passes and I don't read him I feel something is missing. After "listening" to Joe I feel centered...completely centered.

He hasn't by chance kept all his writings and considered putting them into a book? It would make one heck of a great fundraiser. Not only would I buy it for myself but I can't think of a better gift to pass along. Just wondered....Thanks again...Tamme

Last night on the Jim Bohannon Radio Talk Show Mr. Bohannon asked for callers to call in and give their suggestion of a athlete living or dead that we would like to see just more time at their prime. I of course called in BARBARO. Mr. Bohannon was surprised and said that he didn't say 2 or 4 feet and then he strongly agreed.

How neat was that.

I did have a horse slaughter statement ready but he didn't come back to me again so I did not get to make the statement.

LATE MORNING REPOST

This Ride for the Cure is an amazing event from what I hear. Everyone dresses up their horses (pink leg wrappings, pink head gear, ear gear, pink blanets, pink ribbons on the horses, etc...) and they ride over extensive terrain for the cause - rain or shine. Obviously, a lot of work for those involved.
Donate for the cause if you can, Mrs. Hillman has rescued a horse of her own and her husband was a supporter for us politically in MA.

Thanks for responding to Ms. Cindy. I don't think I was quite as polite as you were. I was just angry at hearing the "unwanted" horses excuse and I'm afraid I took it out on her.

If anybody would like to email Ms. Cindy, here is her email. Just please be polite, and don't act like a jerk, as I did !

For those of you just joining us (LOL) "Ms. Cindy" was one of my responses to the Media Blitz yesterday. Here was her response:

"Out of curiosity, what are you going to do with all of those unwanted
horses? Do you want them at your house?"

Here is her email: cyoung@brownfieldnetwork.com

Have not been feeling well and am resting today. Just want to catch up with the famblee.

Loved reading about the white mare...with tears running from my eyes. I agree with Joe wholeheartedly. We need to educate as many people as possible about respect and love for all life. That is one reason why we are all here - why we were all called to this forum. My reason for writing "Cassidy's Rescue" is partly to start to teach children the wonder of all life on this planet, starting with horses. I've gotten the first illustration and I have to say she's nailed how I wanted the horses to look. If anybody would like to see it, please feel free to e-mail me at lyn.gilbert@gmail.com and I'll be happy to attach it. If all goes well, "Cassidy" should be in print Sept/Oct. I have 2 sequels planned. I will also autograph any copies at your request. I'll forward details as I know them.

###
GlendaJo, your envelope arrived yesterday and the necklace is GORGEOUS!!! I have something that will exactly match it. Thank you so much. I will treasure it.

###
LaurieH, how sweet of the vet to send you flowers for you and Bart. Keep us posted. Montego sounds like such a sweetheart and I am overjoyed that you are open to her.

This is birthday weekend for me and I will be celebrating in very unique ways. My b'day is Sunday and I will be spending part of the day reflecting on events of 6 months ago...and thanking Barbaro for bringing us all together and for all we have been able to accomplish in such a short timespan. You are all the greatest.

Barb AZ: You did not go overboard. I wanted to be worse. Yes, educating is the right way, but when people, who are being IGNORANT, respond like she did, scarcastic to boot, sometimes educating is not what they need. These people are beyond educating because they already think they KNOW IT ALL. She is beyond educating.....Anyone who believes a horse should be slaughtered to be eaten deserves to be insulted....because they insult my intelligence by trying to make me/us think it is the right thing, hence, HER COMMENT.....poop on em' all.

Glenda in NE PA: It is VERY WELL known that illegal immigrants work at the slaughter houses. I also watched a full show regarding the slaughter plants (can't recall the name), but two investigators to the cause proved illegals were working there. Just what they do. Most came over the borders and were employed in Texas.....I am not sure about the DeKalb plant having illegals, but I KNOW the Texas plants did. So, my sources are: The undercover investigators, several articles I have read in regards to this, watching them working at the plants (via the investigators and videos I have watched, now, I can't PROVE via the videos are illegal, but they fit the bill (usually Mexican looking, not being discriminating, just factual), many articles I have read about this, etc....

Glenda in NE PA: There are many articles on line in regards to illegals working at the horse slaughter plants. Took this blurb from one of the sites in regards to Dekalb in Illinois. CAUTION: Graphic wording....

This plant kills 200 horses a day. Mostly are Illegal Aliens that work here they come in to work 7:00am to 11:00am. The horses here can smell, hear ,and see other horses being beaten in the head 2 or 3 times in the head then torn apart next to each other. The screams are loud crying nightmares. This building is not even 2 acres of land and completely fenced around.

Makes me ill to think illegals are tearing apart our heritage for a paycheck from a foreign owned corporation. Politicians NEED to understand the brutality of this entire operation...to include the outright scam of no or little taxes paid, foreign consumption, illegals working there, etc....

Posted by: Deb G. at July 27, 2007 7:08 PM

Deb G. -

Just because people look like what may classified as "illegals" doesn't necessary mean they are illegals. Has anyone asked them for their permanent residence cards? If they are illegal then why are they still working? I am certain your sources would have been quick on the button to make that phone call to the INS.

I have worked and been around people making comments about Mexicans while I'm standing in their presence. To save them further embarrassment, I politely inform them I was born in Mexico. The look on their faces is priceless, especially when they are choking on their saliva.

You see, I come from Spanish descent and my appearance, apparently from what I have been told, is not your typical Mexican.

Many of the people taking excellent care of horses on backstretches across this country are also here illegally. They work their butts off, in high-risk jobs for little money.

I'm sure that there are a significant number of US citizens who also slaughter animals across this country.

We also have no idea how the people doing these jobs feel about doing them. Sometimes, you don't have the luxury of choosing how you're going to feed your family.

Hi Jan and Rosemarie - Happy BD to you too!

I was asked by my Dear Hubby what I wanted for my birthday this year. I told him I want $50 to go to each of the rescue facilities that I support (there are currently 3). $1 for each year I've been privileged to be alive. He just looked at me for a long minute and said, "I think that's great. Your command is my wish."

Sometimes, I wonder why I got so lucky.

Socorro: Look, I have been on this board since it started and have gone around with you before. You responded because you are of Spanish descent, I respect how you feel, however, I do not tolerate anyone coming into this Country illegally. There are laws for a reason. I, ME, MYSELF, have nothing to do with nor have Iinvestigated the fact illegals work at the slaughter plants. There have been many articles and investigations done on this. Since the beginning of this board, there has been mentions and knowledge of illegals coming across the border getting jobs at the slaughter plants, not just horse slaughter, but many plants across the US. They know the employers hire them because honestly, illegals come much cheaper than an American looking for a job with little or no benefits to boot. The work is dirty, thus, the hiring easy. If you read articles, there are mentions of raids regarding illegals working at plants so YES, they do do something about this problem. However, it is difficult to find every single illegal working at these plants or anywhere for that fact. I am sure you are aware of the problems in America in regards to illegals. So, please DON'T JUST BECASE me because I do not make the rules. Studies, statistics, investigations prove and show illegals work at the plants. If you want to keep your eyes closed to that than that is YOUR choice. If you want to beleive every worker there is a solid stable American citizen, that is your choice, however, I live in reality and I believe illegals work at slaughter plants....sorry, not everyone in this world carries around baskets of homemade biscuits and apple pies for everyone - there are bad people, illegal people and the slaughter houses are a high priority source for all of that.....
I fight against horse slaughter and always mention the fact illegals work there when getting into stronger discussions with the right people. I am of German and French descent - that does not mean I defend Hitler or what the French have done and I would hope you would not defend an illegal immigrant just because they are of Spanish descent. Again, do what you feel is right and what you believe, but allow others to believe what they would like as well, JUST BECAUSE

Posted by: Deb G. at July 27, 2007 7:32 PM

Theresa: True, people don't have the luxury of choosing, but the POINT IS, the very point:

There are laws against being here illegally. If you are here illegally, you should not be. Period. It is against the law. Either be an American citizen, pay taxes like the rest of us or don't come here. Slaughter plants hire illegals because they are here illegally. McDonald won't hire them because they require documentation to prove citizenship, slaughter houses don't. If places like slaughterhouse and other plants would NOT hire illegals, we would not have so mamy illegals here, and PERHAPS, less people willing to work in a horse slaughter plant.

I'm just curious -- I often hear about illegals working in slaughterhouses, but I've never seen anything official to back this up. Does anyone have sites or articles or studies on this?

I generally steer away from this angle to the issue, because illegal immigration is such a touchy subject -- people get easily polarized.

BBC reported earlier today that Shambo was euthanized by legal injection as opposed to being slaughtered. Am trying to see if that is true since subsequent reports say he was slaughtered. But I agree with you...euthanization would have been the better way. When I find out something, will get back to you.

Oh Socorro: I don't need help. You need a reality check. I used to come on here often. It is folks like you who wait to respond to anything in regards to religion, faith, descent. Let it go....the fact is: Slaughter houses hire illegals. Period.

Posted by: Deb G. at July 27, 2007 7:42 PM

Elizabeth: On-line. Plug in illegal immigrants working in slaughter houses. Several articles will come up. Even articles about raids on slaughter houses to catch illegals. They just can't catch them all.

Socorro: Stop already will u. Whoever said I was angry. I don't get angry. Pretty calm actually. You sound angry over your Spanish descent and illegals being linked. Just stop already. Good grief. Get over yourself. When I speak with politicians (some of whom are family friends) and even on base here, they listen regarding slaughter issues. We work on the issues, not whether or not there might be an illegal or not or what a workers passport, ID or whatever says. We work on issues, not someone's descent. We KNOW there are illegals in plants. We don't think "just because", we KNOW. Personally, I don't care if an illegal is of Spanish descent or frog descent, if they are here illegally, they should not be.

Tricia K: I have read articles in regards to successful raids being done on illegals in plants, to include meat plants, chicken plants, hogs, etc....

Read about the place in Canada getting licenses for Japanese imports and other foreign imports. Dang, will this ever stop.

While I do agree that illegal immigration is one in the long list of problems we have in the U.S.,
I have to point out that the total number of people employed at the slaughter plants, (two of which are not in operation at the moment), couldn't top 1000. I don't know the exact number, but I recall having seen a figure for less that 100 employed at Cavel somewhere in my research.

As someone who employs a man from Mexico (who for the record has a green card, social security number, pays taxes and is an exemplary employee and family man), I think we should refrain from assuming that we know anything about someone else's citizenship status until we have the facts.

That kind of talk can be very offensive, although I'm sure you didn't mean it that way.

Christian: Good grief, would u people STOP. Ok, slaughter houses employ illegals. I NEVER said ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. If someone has a green card and immigation status, THEY ARE NOT ILLEGAL. I said illegal immigrants, not hard working, green card, citizens.

Get OFF the illegal immigrant cart. It was said to show that slaughter houses have the tendency to employ illegals. Nothing about hard working americans or green cards or Mexicans, etc....

There is nothing offensive being said here. Re-read the comments. If someone is employed at a slaughterhouse and is an illegal immigrant, they are ILLEGAL. If they have a green card, they are not.

I care about shutting slaughter houses down. The plants employing illegals is just another dark side of what they are all about. Nothing offensive being said - so stop this nonsense....How do you people survive every day under so much sensitivity and ASSUMPTIONS???

# It's not the 'illegal alien' selling unwanted horses to slaughter. From what I can tell, it's mostly irresponsible, unfeeling American citizens turning their backs on an American icon.

So, I don't think the illegal alien worker issue is relevant to the anti-slaughter legistation at all. Even if we magically transported all illegal aliens out of this country overnight, horse slaughter would continue until federal legislation is passed.

Posted by: SarahFromNC at July 27, 2007 8:26 PM

Renee: BINGO! Illegals = bad. Not illegal = Good

Pretty simple.

We have many Mexicans here in NC, working at several plants. I see them in restaurants and know of many who are hardworking family people. It is just the illegal part that is not right. I don't dwell in it, but if they are illegal, they should not be.

Your comments make allegations about people's citizenship without any proof to back them up...

Your words:

"The undercover investigators, several articles I have read in regards to this, watching them working at the plants (via the investigators and videos I have watched, now, I can't PROVE via the videos are illegal, but they fit the bill (usually Mexican looking, not being discriminating, just factual), many articles I have read about this, etc...."

I take offense to assuming someone is illegal
because they "look" Mexican... that is wrong on so many levels.

BTW- many people who "come over the border"
are from Central America as well... can you tell the differenced by looking?

I generally do not post about anything except my state group, NC, but I am compelled to address blatant bigotry when I see it.

Think of the negative publicity that would give Cavel. Perhaps the newspaper people and media would "like" a story like that. What if FOBs conducted some research on Cavel and could substantiate in fact that Cavel does have employees who are working here illegally?

Just as I suspected, you have no real facts to back up your claims. BTW, Attacking Socorro won't change that.

Peace and understanding will never win out as long as tolerance for our differences is not accepted.

And if you have any problem with people of Spanish or Latin descent (I do not know if you do), then you might want to get ready for some major changes in the United States since they are the fastest growing "minority" in this country!

I hope that you might sit back and consider why you are obviously so angry. Is it because of WHO works at the slaughter plants?? I don't really think so, at least I hope not. (And no matter who works there, THEY ARE NOT THE ONES GETTING RICH!!!) The fact that the slaughter houses exist at all is enough all by itself to merit ALL the anger anyone can feel.

BTW, what difference does it make how long someone has been on this board and what does it have to do with this particular discussion?

RENEE - the New Haven "identity card issue" IS A MESS! My friend is a policewoman there, and the demonstrations - both PRO and CON - constantly block traffic right in the central business district. The cards are totally useless outside of New Haven, and the mayor states that they can only be used for city services (such as obtaining library cards, cashing checks at banks in New Haven etc)...but what seems to escape him is that he is aiding and abetting ILLEGAL residents. And guess who is the most upset? LEGAL residents who have come from other countries....the custodian at the church where I worked is a Russian immigrant, came here ten years ago, had a green card, worked his way up, paid his fees and proudly took the oath of citizenship two years ago - he is NOT amused! Oh well, at least the mayor didn't become the GOVERNOR - LOL!

Wow. If we can get so off-track regarding the issue of illegal immigration, I guess I can't fault the politicians for doing the same thing -- I've been critical that they are more worried about immigration than the horses. But maybe we are too. All of your opinions are valuable and valued. But, it's about the horses. And the horses need all of us. They are lining up for the kill chute at Cavel.

Just got this e-mail from Senator Murray, I also called her office.

Dear Carol,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about horse slaughter. I appreciate hearing from you.

Each year, more than 60,000 horses are slaughtered for human consumption in the U.S. or shipped to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. The U.S. processes an estimated 12,000,000 pounds of horsemeat annually, which is then shipped overseas where it is considered a delicacy in many countries. Horses are targeted for slaughter regardless of gender, age, or breed. They can range from Amish working horses to accomplished show ponies. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) "Guidelines for Handling and Transporting Equines to Slaughter," the majority of the horses sent to slaughter are in "good" condition.

Passed in October 2005, the fiscal year 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill prohibited funding of inspections that would have allowed horses to be slaughtered and sold as food. I supported this amendment during the Senate debate on the Agriculture Appropriations bill, which passed by a large margin in both Houses of Congress, and I was pleased that it was retained during final negotiations on the legislation. However, in February 2006, the Department of Agriculture made an end run around this funding ban, making a rule that allows horses to be slaughtered for food. This was contrary to the clear intent of those of us in Congress who supported the Agriculture Appropriations bill's ban on funding for horse slaughter.

As you may know, Representative John Sweeney (R-NY) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV) introduced the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503 and S. 1915, respectively) to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. The legislation would permanently outlaw this practice in the United States, as well as prohibit the sale and transport of horsemeat intended for human consumption. On September 7, 2006, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 503. I cosponsored S. 1915 in the Senate during the 109th Congress but unfortunately it did not come up before the full Senate for a vote.

Throughout my Senate tenure, I have consistently supported efforts to protect animals from cruel and inhumane treatment. I do, however, understand the unease expressed by many horse owners and breeders over the potential impact of the legislation. For some, slaughter is seen as a solution to disposal of their aged or ailing animals. For many people, horses provide wonderful companions and are an iconic symbol of our national culture and history. Should the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act come before the full Senate for a vote during the 110th Congress, I will certainly keep your thoughts in mind.

Once again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any additional concerns.

Please keep your spirit so near. Your presence is needed every moment of the day. We heard from your earthly mom and dad...and they are so proud of the FOBs..for fighting for the anti-horse slaughter bill to get passed. Run, painfree, we love you!

Goodnight Family/Fans of Barbaro

Please, let us all join together as one..for one cause, to get this bill passed. It is depressing enough knowing horses are lining up as I type to be slaughter, brutally, that dogs, cats, all animals are being abused, so let us join hands as family...and keep our promise to Barbaro...

Call, fax, email, whatever it takes...this nightmare will soon be over if we keep up the momentum. We came here and together we are, and together we will celebrate this bill being passed.

Remember the rescues, the ones suffering, the Fallen Angels, the wildlife, and us as a family, and luv one another.

I hold nothing against foreigners, frogs, cats, dogs, germans, french, fat, skinny or whatever other human beings or animals exist. Where on God's green earth do u get anger from???? Re-read the posts, they hardly show anger. The ONLY ANGER I SENSE IS Socorro or others mentioning descent as if they are angry someone would even assume a Mexican is an illegal. I did not do that, she did. As usual, when comments are made here, a few select people, tear the words apart and SEARCH for something negative. There was NOTHING negative in what I said. Slaughterhouses employ illegal immigrants. FOR YOUR INFORMATION and to EDUCATE you: Illegal aliens are employed at the plant. You mean to tell me that hundreds of articles, investigators and raids being written and carried out means I have no information to back up illegal working at plants. Are you kidding me? What rock are you under? That is what I said, re-read the posts. From there, a few others took off with it....you folks are attacking others, and you don't even see it.....

I just read that the farm bill passed the Senate today but that the Pres has said all along that he will veto it. There were not enough votes to override the veto.

Could that be why the ammendment was not attached?

Christian: You're kidding me right? I will not even respond to your sick assumptions actually. Get a grip: If Mexican looking people are working at the plant, it backs up illegals coming in as you are aware that many illegal aliens are of Mexican descent. Surely, you would not think someone looking American would be illegal more than someone looking Mexican coming over the borders there? I am not discrinating or being ahh, whatever it was that u said, the point here is: Slaughterhouses employ illegal aliens. Whether they are Mexican or from central america, whatever.....reality check again: if a Mexican looking person is working at a slaughter plant over the border, there is a CHANCE, a BIG CHANCE, he/she might be illegal.....it is just factual. They might not be, who the heck knows.

do u have anything better to do than sit here and tear apart someone's words?????

By the way: For a living, I protect this country and my ability to look at someone and determine whether or not they MIGHT be a terrorist is used daily. It could save someone's life, including yours. It does not mean I discriminate, it cues me in on what targets to focus on. As would be a Mexican at a slaughter house. If you saw a dead cat and around the corner saw a pittbull, I guarantee you might ASSUME the dog did it. Reality is: He might not have. Stop being so sensitive to reality and facts, it may save your life one day.

Linda H -

Whatever reasons the amendment was not attached, we can be thankful it wasn't.

The saying, "Out of something bad, something good will come out of it," is true in this case.

On Rags to Riches' blog:
http://www.ntra.com/blog.aspx?blogid=10

A thank you from Team Pletcher ...

Team Pletcher would like to thank all of our generous fans and those working at the clinic who reached out to Rags to Riches while she was at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, New Bolton Center these past 2 days; the same place where Barbaro was hospitalized for 8-months.

We were told that as she was unloaded off her royal chariot, (Brookledge Horse Van) at New Bolton that there was a large gathering of vets, assistants, care-takers and loyal fans waiting to meet our regal hero; everyone wanted to see the big filly to pet her and take pictures of her. Rags To Riches was attended by Dr. Stan Martin and his team while at the Center.

It means a lot to all of us here at Todd Pletcher Racing and her owners to know that she was in such good care while she was gone. She definitely arrived back at Belmont Park last night with more luggage than when she left.

Supposedly, Rags to Riches, our extremely spoiled patient, had at least 10 gift baskets sent to her while she was at the clinic. We thank all of you for your support, presents, cards, candy, carrots, apples and good-luck wishes. We have been sharing the beautiful, massive basket of red apples with all our champions here in the barn - including the people!

Having a horse like Rags to Riches in our racing stable has been quite the experience. Not only do we get lots of presents, but more importantly it is obvious that she has affected many people's lives. She has touched all of us here (with her determination AND her sharp teeth), and she has reached out to people all over the country and even her fans across the ocean.

Thank you for your continued love and support for Rags to Riches. Although she shows her appreciation by pinning her ears, kicking and biting at us, we figure deep down inside she secretly loves the attention.

Stay tuned for more updates on our stubborn, yet courageous Belmont Stakes winning filly, Rags to Riches.

- Team Pletcher

Deb & Socorro& anyone else noshing on this illegal alien issue...

How is this feuding helping the horses? How will they benefit from your strife> Come on, guys...don't get distracted...we don't have time for that. 110th Congress adjourns in a little under 3 months.

PLEASE> settle your differences Off-Line.

(BTW: we were all aliens once. My family; mostly Irish, and at one time, the Irish were considered the scum of the earth. Only the most wretched jobs were available for them. IRISH NEED NOT APPLY signs were everywhere in NYC and most of the major immigration ports...and BTW: who's running the show at Cavel: rich white guys...surprise, surprise.)

I have a dear friend who is Mexican actually. She is an Army Officer. Funny, I never for one minute would even think she is illegal.

Actually sounds like a few of you are the ones assuming. That statement never came up in my posts until a few of you caused me to defend a simple statement of "slaughterhouses employ illegal immigrants".......

Anyone going to the Traverse?

3 MONTHS...FOBS....3 MONTHS!

As you all know, time flies...but it does not for our beloved horses...knowing you are loaded in a packed trailer heading to a brutal slaughter house...there is not enough time.

Please, put all difference aside...we are here together to get this bill passed for Barbaro's sisters and brothers...what he did for us, we gratefully are doing for Barbaro and his brethen...
