    Barbaro Updates: 344

    updates are now here.

Update 2238: More on Street Sense's win: Street Sense Just Fine in Jim Dandy, excerpt:

"We learned a lot from this trip," Nafzger said. "We laid a little bit closer today. That was our plan. They got him in a trap and kept him there, but he got out and he responded. I was concerned, you're always concerned until you get out. You don't know how much that can take out of your horse. Once he got out, he came on with his run.

"It was a good, solid prep to get him ready for the Travers. I know C P West will probably be back and probably a couple of others and Curlin, too. It's going to be a tough race. You should see a horse with more timing, more rhythm and more fitness than he had today. He has a race over the track now; that should be an advantage."

Update 2237: Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense returned to the winners circle at Saratoga today in the Jim Dandy. More to follow.

Update 2236: I spent the morning with Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue, interviewing Bev and Ginny for my book. As I left I ran into an FOB and family, I think they were looking at a horse which would be very cool, each horse moved on makes room for another save.

Hawty Creek ran this afternoon at Philadelphia Park. The race came off the turf and speed was holding which did not suite her running style. She finished 6th and appeared fine after the race.

While I have been talking with Tim and Penny about transitioning this site back to them and opening up alexbrownracing.com for FOBs, this transition has not yet taken place. We are still here. The discussion board has however changed names.

Update 2235: Some great racing yesterday with Redaspen's win, Who's Happy's second, Diabolical's win in the Vanderbilt (Diabolical Turns Up Heat in Vanderbilt Win) and a track record set in the Whitney Handicap (Lawyer Ron Romps in Whitney, Sets Track Mark). Today Hawty Creek is off to Philadelphia Park and Street Sense returns in the Jim Dandy at Saratoga. Lets hope its another great day for racing.

Update 2234: I spoke with Victor Molina last night, he was very happy with his win on Redaspen. It was his first win since his month's suspension. He said he got pinched back going into the first turn and was further back than he would have liked. Knowing his horse however he did not panic and when she finally did make her move she was exceptional. Victor knows Redaspen better than anyone and it shows. Victor was also very grateful for all the support he had received, not only from Tim and his owners (he was also second on Who's Happy) but from Fair Hill in general where he was able to come out and continue riding and keep fit. As we know, he is very remorseful about his action, this episode is now behind him and I am thrilled Redaspen got him back in the winners' circle.

Update 2233: I just spoke to Tim. He was very excited. As far as Redaspen's race, it was very nerve wracking. He could not sight her going down the backside. She then made a run up the rail and exploded. She won handily. Awesome. She is cooling out well.

Update 2232: YES, Redaspen won another stakes race. More when I have spoken to Tim.

Update 2231: Congratulations to tongue-wagging Diabolical for a nice sprint win in the Venderbilt. He always looked comfortable. Ricky his exercise rider was confident, he had been training well and it showed this afternoon!

Update 2230: Just spoke to Tim, he was happy with Happy! Victor gave her a nice ground saving ride. When Raging Rapids drew off at the 3/8ths pole Happy hung in there. It looked like she was fading and could be caught for second, but she kicked in and only got beat a couple of lengths in the end. She is now cooling out and all appears well.

Update 2229: Who's Happy was second in her second start in a stakes race this afternoon. More once I have spoken with Tim.

Update 2228: Dylan Thomas got the job done with ease: DYNAMITE DYLAN FAR TOO GOOD .

Update 2227: In all of the excitement with the racing at Philadelphia Park and Saratoga, we forgot to mention the King George at Ascot: DYLAN CAN DELIVER.

Update 2226: My last day at Fair Hill ... really. As I came to the barn there was plenty of activity as Who's Happy was being prepared to leave for Philadelphia Park, her owner was in the barn getting ready to ship her. She runs in an early race, Redaspen in a late race so Redaspen is shipping up later.

I only had two to ride, Mass Romantic and Kitty. Mass Romantic went to the Tapeta track and galloped a mile and a quarter. She went nicely, and for sure my last time on the Tapeta track at Fair Hill! Tim was jogging Real Lace on the dirt. Kitty went across the fields along with her usual partner, the 2yo Two Punch filly and Tim. We had a nice jog around. Finally I took care of Linda's Precious Partner in Linda's absense. She is on her way to Colonial Downs with Pistol.

Lots of excitement today for our horses at Philadelphia Park, we also have racing from Saratoga on ABC, from 4 - 6 pm. Jeannine Edwards sent this short preview:

We have the 4 live races, all graded stakes. We will run a feature on brass hat, and also include several interviews. We are also showing the first of 5 veterinary features with dr. richardson that we shot at new bolton last month (this one pertains to condylar fractures because that's what brass hat had in '05). Finally we will run an update on rags to riches.

And finally from Today at Saratoga.

Update 2225: Some great racing today. Saratoga offers three grade ones and a grade two. These races will be televised and Fair Hill is represented by Diabolical in the Vanderbilt. Today at Saratoga provides some interesting trivia for these races.

Philadelphia Park offers a strong stakes program as part of its "Day at the Races" program. We have both Who's Happy and Redaspen running.

Tomorrow sees the likely return of Street Sense in the Jim Dandy, a Travers prep race: Street Sense Returns to Action in Jim Dandy. Street Sense faces an intriguing challenger in Tiz Wonderful, who was the early Derby favorite before getting sidelined.

Good morning to all my fellow Fans!

I will be watching the racing from Saratoga today with a good friend and fellow Maine Mob participant. I have no favorites picked save Diabolical. And I will be following results from Philadelphia and Woodbine, where Michael Matz has Street Sounds in the Wonder Where Stakes, the 3rd leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara. This one is on the turf and she has won on turf. It will be a great race as she is again meeting Sealy Hill. Safe trips to all today.

Can anyone spare some cool dry weather? We're unseasonable warm up here in Vacationland this week. Hard to sleep as most of us don't have AC!

Happy Birthday to all my fellow Leos! (Mine was the 23rd!)

Prayers and positive energy to all in need.

    CHAPTER UPDATE !!!

    Chapters 16 & 17 ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE ... on the DB.

The diamond sand covered their hooves, as they walked. It lightly flew up and dusted their legs, tails and bellies. The more they walked, the more luminous they became. They sparkled as the sand sparkled. They trailed swirling streams of color, kicking up stardust, and the sands of time, as they walked.

    Enjoy My Dear Frens. ^-^

    Good morning all

Marg - plenty of cool weather free to a good home (call anywhere in the UK).

I think the weather is perking up a bit. Today we have one of the premier races of the year - the King Georg VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Many great horses have won this one - Dahlia and Swain more than once. It's a small field today and the rain has made it difficult to predict. I don't think he'll win, but I'll be cheering Sergeant Cecil home. It is called 'diamond day' and there is a ladies' race with some rather nice prizes on offer.

Elsewhere, some racecourses are suffering from flooding. Southwell's polytrack has been washed away and they shall have to relay it - their turf track is just sodden but still there, so there's one advantage of turf over synthetic.

    ### Lyn Gilbert and Rosemary - just a word about Shambo. I think it is just a matter of semantics (we don't use the term 'euthanize' generally). He was put down by lethal injection and a post mortem has confirmed bovine TB lesions. This was a very sensitive issue as he was a sacred bullock, but we have had a problem with bovine TB for years here and the debate over it rumbles on and on - mainly to do with whether badgers should be exterminated because it is alleged they spread it. They have wiped out nearly all the badgers in Ireland to try to stop its spread but it hasn't worked. The sooner the scientists come up with a vaccine the better.

I'm off to watch the racing now. Oh, and I'm yet another Leo ( birthday next Wednesday)!.

    Hay Liz,

Glad to know that you are drying out a bit...seems to be something shared by many of us hormonal FOBs......um......what?....oh....OH!...the RAIN!!!...(sorry...pinky to corner of mouth).

Have a good day over there, Dear UK FOB. We will be watching some of your races here, on TVG and HRTV.

I have been thinking about you, since last week, when you told us about having to pick your daughter up at school, and about how awful the weather has been.

I hope that you have a much better week.

    Your FOB Fren, O

Think we might be drying out a bit. Wish I could watch some of your racing, but there is a good day's racing at Ascot, Newmarket and York that will do very well. My daughter got home OK - she has actually left school, but parental duties don't seem to have lessened that much. Have a good weekend.

erm..and of course, RedAspen and Who's Happy should be coming in first in their respective fields, as well!

XXXAnna in TX, raising a banana smoothie to toast the beauty of the horses running this weekend and for the safety of the horses, riders and starters.

Saratoga report, today dawned grey, off and on drizzly with chance of bigger storms this afternoon. The last three days have been hot and humid, some horses sweaty going into the gate, so a cooling drizzle feels pretty good considering. Even with the weather a great day is in the works with four stakes races on the card.

Spirits run high in town with this meet promising to be the best ever. Purses are up some 20% so the fields are respectably full. Please if you haven't made the journey to the Spa, make a day of hooky to visit this wonderful racing venue. Cool connecting with NY FOB friends up here - and keeping the Barbaro link strong. Hope to see a bunch more! Peace to all FOBs and a hearty high-o-silver away!

Safe rides to all in Saratoga today.

Especially Mr. Boxcar's virgin turf experiences.Got snaffued (ok HOW do i spell that?) on my calling yesterday and will completed the assignment today on answering machines--those not all really full...

Saratoga is a beautiful place, like Lake Placid, one of the playgrounds of the rich New Yorkers to hitch their opulent specially designed rail cars to for the summer, bringing along the "help," and the entourage, when an entourage was REALLY an entourage.

I love the wide porches on so many of the houses, the miles of white fences...

Enjoy, all: hope the weather is smiling down on all riders and horses during the month.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, many happy returns to you on your final day at Fair Hill Farm! I loved the story about Dylan Thomas' running in the King George today at Ascot. Dylan Thomas was one of my fave poets of the 20th century, so I'll certainly send good wishes his way. May all of the horses at Ascot be safe today!
I hope that Rags to Riches is back at 100%. Isn't she a chestnut beauty? Peace to all citizens of the Barbaro Nation, around the globe. RMH

    #### To Marg, yes it is hot amd muggy here in coastal CT. Nikita is down on the floor in frotn of the bay windows. Brent is in the garage working on his boat (maybe it'll be in working order before the end of the Summer!) and Nikita's trying to catch of glimpse of him if he comes outside.
To Vonda: thanks for the candle reminder. I think that Linnie was the FOB who started a candle group for Rags to Riches, called "Ragsy". I'll remember her as well as our beloved Sweet Prince and the other colts who've passed.
Happy leonine birthday greetings to Marg in Maine & Liz in the UK. Goodness gracious, there are a lot of us on this site! ####

JUST ANOTHER SWELTERING DAY AT JOE'S TB FRIENDS...
TIME TO GO AND AND RISK YOUR LIMBS TO HELP YET ANOTHER HORSE WHAT HAS GONE CAST IN HIS STALL..
(Sparrows frolicking in the water tubs indeed...)

Saturday, July 28th... It was so hot yesterday sparrows were diving into water tubs. Frolicking in the surf. Jealous horses stood close and watched...

Already this Saturday morning is off to a bad start. At 4:30 came bam bam bam from the barn. Hesaonenightwonder was upside down in his stall. We call him Wonder. Finally I get Wonder on his feet, and he is covered with his own smeared poop. In this condition there is not a filly in the joint who will date him. Before my first cup of coffee with praline cream, I am grooming Wonder. He stands quietly. John Melancamp on the barn radio. Flies have started their engines...

And now coffee is made, and new pictures from our silly Kodak program are refusing to load. There is a really good one of me and Sandra Bullock picking roses from our garden. Okay just kidding. We do not have a garden. And Sandra Bullock has not been to our ranch. But once again chat room chatter has her living with us two nights a week. Our friend Tobi Geter phones to pout. How come I never introduced her to Sandra Bullock? Just for that, Tobi promises to never introduce me to Justin Timberlake. I go to bed, wishing I could sleep for a month...

But Hesaonenightwonder had other plans, and now I am fully awake. The second cup of coffee comes with a powdered doughnut from Hostess. Our little friend Allison Martino loves to shop at the day old Hostess store. Cupcakes, two packages for a buck. Allison brings old doughnuts for Porky Pig and Pony Boy, but I intercept. Living like royalty. Our butler should be here soon.

A new gelding from the killer pens, and his name is Sweet. He is in decent shape. There is a racing tattoo which says Sweet is 5 years old. Our shoer Tim Gee says sweet. My friend Mike Baker says sweet. My friend Katie Cooper says sweet. I tell Katie Cooper my foot hurts, and she says sweet. I tell Mike Baker the insects are overwhelming, and he says sweet. I tell Tim Gee this race horse will stand quietly while you remove his shoes, and he says sweet. My friend Ryan in Vacaville loves summer heat. The hotter the better. I tell Ryan we are going to be 102 degrees on Saturday. Ryan says sweet. So it is only natural to name a horse Sweet. Behind each executive decision, there is a reason.

A big Happy Birthday to Natalie Markovic, who today turns 9. Natalie sent us a beautiful pencil drawing of Pony Boy. Natalie is hoping to one day be an artist, but she already is. Tonight Natalie celebrates with mom and dad at her favorite restaurant. The Spaghetti Factory. Happy Birthday Natalie, and come see Pony Boy again soon. He waits at the gate...

A scalding hot weekend on the way. Flies are rubbing their tiny little hands together. A special hello to Jessica Stumes, and she has two tickets to see Carrie Underwood sing tonight. Jessica has yet to decide who she is taking. Little sister Allie wants to go. Boyfriend Mark wants to go. Best friend Jenny wants to go. Uncle Marv wants to go. Aunt Kim wants to go. The suspense is mounting. We all wait on the decision from Jessica.

Enjoy your hot Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses. I am trying to post new pictures. 4 cups of coffee now. And two very stale doughnuts...

    Joe

Oy, back to the phones, cool in the darkened house with 100 fans working hard to keep the greyhounds cool...awaiting the arrival of Boarding GH #2.

PS: for the very well-intentioned but slightly shy FoBs, this calling the answering machines is, as Joes' friends would say: SWEET. Gotta love it. How to polish your phone skills, get brave, help the horses and begin the day feeling POWERFUL!!!

    oNWARD....

Secretariat, Barbaro prints to benefit laminitis research

    'MEMORIES OF GREATNESS' PRINT
    Courtesy of Secretariat.com
Thoroughbred standouts Secretariat and Barbaro are depicted together on a new print that will benefit the fight against laminitis, the painful hoof disease that ended both of their lives.

Titled “Memories of Greatness,” the portraits were produced by equine artist Jaime Corum and capture the nobility and courage of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Barbaro.

The prints will be unveiled at Saratoga Race Course on August 4.

Meadow Stables’s Penny Chenery and Lael Stables’s Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the connections for Secretariat and Barbaro, respectively, sanctioned the poster and print set to benefit the Laminitis Fund at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center.

“The New Bolton Center is making some exciting headway in its laminitis research, and its efforts should be widely supported throughout the equine community,” Chenery said. “These horses have given so much of themselves, and we owe it to them to find a cure for this disease.”

“Roy and I are so honored to have this opportunity to give back to the New Bolton Center,” Gretchen Jackson said. “Jaime’s incredible portraits of Secretariat and Barbaro capture the noble spirits that made them both such endearing champions.”

Memories of Greatness will be available for purchase on August 4-5 at the Secretariat.com booth, adjacent to the jockey silks display. The poster, available for $30, displays both horses together, united in one 16-by-20 inch piece.

The print set, limited to 500 produced and available for $300, features the horses separately, along with the artistic marks representing the colors of the silks they carried.

Hand-numbered and signed by the artist and connections of the horses, each print measures 16-by-24 inches. Both are available through Secretariat.com, in conjunction with publisher Moonlight Press.

Chenery, the Jacksons and Corum will sign items at the Secretariat booth from 11 a.m. EDT to noon on August 4. On August 5 beginning at noon, they will be available for signings at the At the Rail Pavilion luncheon, an annual fund-raiser for the New Bolton Center hosted by Saratoga.

The luncheon is a ticketed event, and tickets must be purchased in advance at $225 per person. For more information, contact Patricia Hall at (610) 925-6500 or or e-mail her at phall@vet.upenn.edu.

I read the article, it is NOT one of our media blitz letters; it is an original editorial that supports the slaughter ban BUT says there are not enough rescues - and needs comments. COME ON people, no call lists today, make your voices heard on this one. Make Gretchen Jackson proud.

POPULAR SONG - SOUNDTRACK OF THE CENTURY

While preprogramming my TV to turn to ABC for this afternoon's racing program from Saratoga, I noticed a goldmine of old music on OVTV (274 on DirecTV) - it is on "as we speak" and for most of the day and night, in a number of hour segments. Rigiht now is "Immigrants Berlin and the Gershwins influence Broadway Musicals," and among those featured in other episodes are Jolson, Billie Holiday, Sinatra, Bing Crosby, you name it - even R&R with the Beatles the Kinks and the Stones! I think I'll stick with the music until time for Saratoga later. Any old music buffs will want to check this out - also on tonight AFTER racing is over.

    MUSICAL HORSE AID BENEFIT CONCERT

My two passions - music and horses - This event has been linked up top by Alex; here's the current DB thread:

    http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=12830.1

MUSICAL HORSE AID BENEFIT CONCERT TO BE HELD THIS SEPTEMBER 15TH IN SOUTHEASTERN WISCONSIN
Event To Increase Awareness And Raise Funds For The Care, Safety And Rescue Of Horses.

Animal Fairy Charities Inc. is presenting the Musical Horse Aid benefit concert September 15th at the Walworth County FairGrounds. Musical Horse Aid is a day long event featuring live entertainment and performances by various bands.

The Event is being held to increase awareness and raise funds for the care, safety and rescue of horses.

Over the past several years the public has become more in tune with the needs of retired horses and have stepped up to the plate to help fund various organizations that provide our horses with a safe haven.

Currently, legislation is pending that could end the slaughter of American horses. This has created a national movement to rescue horses and help fund the organizations that provide care and shelter for our horses.

We must support our Equine Rescue organizations that give these horses the second chance they need. Most can be successfully retrained for second careers as show horses, companion horses, riding horses and even therapy horses for the handicapped. Those that can not go on to a new career are able to live out their lives in peace and dignity with loving people that care for them.

Musical Horse Aid will run from noon until 10 pm. The entertainment line up will range in musical styles from country, folk to rock. The featured bands include: Brian Stace of Nashville; Ronnie Nyles & the Krash Band of Milwaukee; Martha Berner of Chicago; Spiral Trance; Twang Dragons; Brent Mitchell and Twisting Roses, and Musical comedy interludes performed by CJ of the Mythic Figs appearing as Pot Luck.

Various speakers are also scheduled throughout the event including a spokesperson from the Humane Society of the United States, Shelley Abrams from PA, board memeber of the R.A.C.E FUND, Barbara Boubelik from Leland, IL Founder and Executive Director of Lazy Maple Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation, NFP, Shelley Sawhook President of The American Horse Defense Fund from DC and more.

A variety of items from area businesses will be donated for the fundraiser. The MC for this years event is Cindy Huber from FM 106, Milwaukee’s country music station. Various food and beverage vendors will be on site for the days festivities.

Pre event ticket sales are available at www.animalfairycharities.org. Tickets are $25 with all proceeds from ticket sales being donated to Horse Rescue Organizations and other horse related charities such as The Humane Society of The United States, Habitat for Horses, Thoroughbred Charities of America, Lazy Maple Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation, NFP from IL and Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation, Inc. from WI.

Animal Fairy Charities Inc. was organized to foster national & international prevention of cruelty to all animals and aid in their safety & welfare with a special emphasis on horses. [end of excerpt from DB post]

And in case some of you haven't read this article, it's worth repeating for all Barbaro/Secretariat fans out there:

Barbaro, Secretariat Art to Support Laminitis Research
    by: Edited Press Release
    July 28 2007 Article # 10098

A new set of prints and a poster featuring Triple Crown winner Secretariat and 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented By Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Barbaro will benefit the fight against laminitis, the painful hoof disease that ended both their lives.

The works, entitled "Memories of Greatness, were created by equine artist Jaime Corum. They will be unveiled the weekend of Aug. 4 and 5 at Saratoga Race Course. Proceeds will benefit the Laminitis Fund at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center.

The poster, which costs $30, shows Secretariat and Barbaro together in one 16- by-20-inch piece, with their names and stables noted. The print set, limited to 500 produced and available for $300, features the horses separately, along with the artistic marks representing the colors of the silks they carried. Hand-numbered and signed by the artist and respective connections of the horses, each print in the set measures 16 inches by 24 inches.

Both the poster and the print sets are available through Secretariat.com, in conjunction with publisher Moonlight Press, and online orders will begin shipping on Aug. 15.

Saskatchewan plant to process horse meat
    European countries buying meat
    Veronica Rhodes, CanWest News Service
    Published: 2:06 am

REGINA - A southern Saskatchewan meat plant plans to start processing horse meat next month for the European market.

Natural Valley Farms will slaughter horses at its plant near Neudorf and process the meat at its Wolseley facility. The communities are located about 400 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon.

"We don't buy the horses or sell them or sell the meat, we just custom process it," said Ken Piller, president of the producer-owned Natural Valley Farms.

He said he did not know where the meat will be shipped in Europe.

The contract will mean Natural Valley's workforce will once again be at full force, at around 150 employees.

In April, the company temporarily laid off some workers and operated only two days a week.

"The contract is really good for our producers and our natural beef products and everything else to keep volume in here. We employ a lot of people and they want jobs," said Piller.

The company will continue to process beef, elk and bison. Processing horse meat will be a first.

"We built a multi-species plant. That certainly opens the doors for all kinds of processing," said Piller.

Horse slaughtering is a controversial issue in the United States, where the country's last horse slaughterhouse located in Illinois is challenging a state law that bans the practice.

Two Texas-based plants were closed in May due to the enforcement of similar state legislation.

Mae Smith, executive director of the Saskatchewan Horse Federation, admitted it is an emotionally charged issue. The federation does not oppose the practice, but says treating horses humanely and with respect is paramount.

"Our position, in a sense, is that we're not really in the business of making judgment calls as much as ensuring that the animals are well cared for, that they're properly handled," Smith said.

While the consumption of horse meat would be uncommon among many Saskatchewan residents, Smith said it is commonly found on restaurant menus in Quebec.

Mr. Pillar's comment of "treating horses humanely and with respect"...got to me.......killing is treating with respect and a humane practice???? This guy is off his rocker!!!

###GREAT UPDATE ON RAGS TO RICHES!!!!!

Great news from Todd Pletcher and more clarity for everyone who was concerned ...

They were waiting for Dr. Thorpe all along to look at Rags ... he wasn't available ... they sent her to New Bolton .... According to what I heard TAP say, that now they're just waiting for Thorpe, the owners vet for Rags, to give her a clean bill of health and resume her racing schedule. It was also noted that the plan is still in place to race her next year as a 4 year old and, hopefully, enough time to get her fit and ready for The Alabama! And even the sportscasters said that rumors were flying and people were jumping to the most negative conclusion and Todd wanted to put those issues to rest!!!

I just LOVE these Saturday afternoons watching the races with you all. The horses ALWAYS brought tears to my ears, just for their beauty and heart which is so powerful and obvious in these shows. Now, though, when I watch on these beautiful Saturdays this summer, I feel that I know so much more when I watch - no longer just the generic love of horses and their beauty - but it is an experience wrapped in nostalgia, in painful memories, in hopeful memories, when we watched these races last year. Last year, our beloved Barbaro was watching in his stall, he had all our hearts with him as we vicariously lived the season he would have had if he not been in New Bolton. The music of the Emirates Airlines which accompanies these programs creates a viseral, physical response in my body, all wrapped up with Barbaro. And the theme music of the program, well, I can't tell you...

Well, that question is answered. Mr. Boxcar HATED the turf!! It was a huge disappointment. I'm lucky enough to have a jockey who is very into the welfare of the horse. As soon as he realized that he wasn't handling the turf well, he didn't push him and just let him run home.

Boxcar is not used to being last and his ego is bruised but the rest of him seems fine. Back to the dirt for Mr. B!!!!

    hAy famblee!

Home again and have my personal internet access again after a very long week. Spent the better part of the past week in New Orleans at a training seminar, and also, on the side, trying to find out all I can about the recovery down there.

I missed my TWR famblee and have much catching up to do, starting with....we're still on TWR and Alex is still at Fair Hill?? Kewl! Alex, it's your home and it's pulling you back.

Rags, I hope whatever ailed you is gone and that you will stay healthy and happy.

Redaspen and Who's Happy, I am proud of you and Tim and Alex!!

Boxy, yes, for some horses, grass is only for eating. Next time, my grey fren, next time. Shelley A, I'm so happy for you and your afternoon with Mrs. Jackson!

Lizzie and Bagheera missed me, they're well, and Bagheera is changing his color. Last night I slipped up and called him Baby B! Will my kitten turn into a roan, like Baby B??

    bizarre entry
taken from Slate.com...article about the very bad week in sports...
    saying it could be worse

to illustrate "worse" they had this entry (not funny)

"Veterinarians at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center admitted today to misdiagnosing 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, who was euthanized earlier this year. The beloved thoroughbred's X-rays were mixed up with those of a badly mangled quarterhorse named Princess Steve, a hospital spokesman said. "It turns out that Barbaro was on his way to a full recovery," the spokesman added. "Sorry about that."

Hiya, FsOB! What a great afternoon for Tim Woolley & Fair Hill Farm's training team at Saratoga. Kudos! And ditto for Dylan Thomas winning in the King George VI stakes.
A great story for today. I called my late Mother's cousin in KY to tell her that Brent & I eloped on 07/07/07. We had a super talk. Doris told me that she & two of her "Red Hat" delegation went over to Midway recently to visit what I believe is the "Old Friends" horse retirement center. Doris said that the owner was ever so personable and dedicated to the horses. D. doesn't have e-mail, but I'll send her the telephone #s for KY's recalcitrant US Senators, so that the Red Hat ladies can call them and seek support for S-311. Wishing everyone a grand evening. Alex, if you are celebrating with Tim, have a great, safe time. Peace, RMH

    #### To Barb in AZ: You made me laugh, girlfriend!
To Dora J. Crow: How cool that you are a Leo, too. 45 is just a babe; I'll turn 52 on the 22nd.
To Susan E. & Lisa Leach: New Orleans is one of my most revered places. I probably visited there 13 or 14 times between 1991 and 2003. I would dearly love to go back for a visit to show support for the people there, but I am hesitant that seeing all of the changes and closures might really break my heart. My parents went there on their honeymoon so I heard about "N'Ahlins" all through my childhood. My Brit Lit teacher in high school had been born & raised there. What an amazingly unique city! ####

This is great and I plan to use it in my faxs on Monday!

" 1. Horse slaughter is a violation of the Humane Slaughter Act of 1958. http://www.manesandtailsorganization.org/captive_bolt.htm This Federal statute was amended twice, most recently in 2002 when it was strengthened. This is the legal part of the anti-slaughter position. This is irrefutable and no one can defend horse slaughter due to the stipulations of this statute. Therefore, it is illegal to slaughter a horse, or any other equid, in the United States of America. 2. The following zoos no longer feed horse meat to their carnivores: Austin Zoo Lincoln Park Zoo Brookfield Zoo Columbus Zoo These zoos are aware of the drugs that horses ingest that saturate the tissues and are not fully purged by the body. Horse meat is simply dangerous to carnivores. 3. Horse meat has not been an ingredient in domestic animal food for over 25 years, for exactly the same reason that all zoos are moving towards eliminating horse meat from their carnivore diets. 4. From the USDA web site regarding Federal Inspection: "Numbers refer to the amount killed in Federally Inspected plants, and are not necessarily inspected." The plants are not inspected on a regular basis, and that is a direct quote from the USDA web site. No animal has guaranteed federal protection while at the slaughterhouse. 5. The horse slaughter ban is a matter of Law, not an 'animal rights' issue. It is simply folly to assert that the Humane Society of the United States or PeTA will ever ban the slaughter of animals raised for food, which horses are not. PeTA may want people to convert to vegetarianism or veganism, however, that is a personal choice and not one that will ever be legislated. 6. A ban on horse slaughter will not, and I repeat, will not lead to a ban on the production of food animals or the jobs associated with them. 7. Regarding the organizations that oppose HR 503 and S. 311, the American Quarterhorse Association breeders delivered over 120K live foals in 2006. The majority of horses slaughtered in the United States are American Quarterhorses. It follows logically that far too many horses are bred every year by the AQHA especially. How about legislating the breeding of horses? 8. The American Veterinary Medical Association classifies horses as companion animals. See the following brochure on the AVMA web site that discusses 'How do I know it's time?": http://www.avma.org/communications/brochures/euthanasia/equine/equine_euth_brochure.asp There is absolutely no question that the AVMA is catering to the cattle industry as they have many more bovines to care for than equids. The AAEP follows what the partent organization does. That these organizations support slaughter is contradictory. 9. Let us compare the native abilities of the food animals to the horses: A. Horses have carried our cavalry into battle. B. Horses, not bovines, porcines, lambs, or fowl, march in Presidential funeral processions. C. Horses, not bovines, porcines, lambs, or fowl, are service animals; there are over 90 horses on the New York City Mounted Police Unit and the Mounties do indeed make arrests with the assistance of their mounts. It is a felony to strike a police horse in many states that have Mounted Police Units. D. Horses are therapy animals for stroke victims, people with auto-immune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, and for rehabilitation from accidents requiring the improvement of balance. E. In 1973, 'Time' magazine awarded 'Secretariat' the Athlete of the Year. 'Secretariat' was a horse. 10. The 'Private Property' issue. When a horse owner has his or her horse (or horses) stolen and slaughtered they suffer not only material harm, but psychological harm as well. One cannot invoke the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution's 'Takings Clause' as the mere existence of the slaughter industry enables the private property rights of horse owners to be violated via their horses being stolen and slaughtered. Are you able to refute a Federal statute and an amendment to the Constitution? Please give it your best shot. Ellen-Cathryn Nash President Manes and Tails Organization "

I also know if my Murphy Woof goes before me, he will be welcomed into Hevvin and always feel love and happiness there...and I'm even sure there will be a bed for him to share, since he has NEVER slept on the floor in his now almost 11 years!! :) And the best part, peeples, is we can read about our fur/feather kids and still feel a connection to them and their antics:)

Such a small price to pay to ensure that present and future TB champions and all members of the equine species do not have to fall to the ravages of this insidious killer that takes the lives of our beloved horses, like Barbaro, all too soon.

Wouldn’t you have given $29 prior to January 29th if you had known then that you might have saved Barbaro’s life? Well we didn’t have that opportunity because time ran out on Barbaro, all too soon, but we do have all the time in the world now to make sure that Nicanor and Baby Brother might never have to experience the painful debilitation and loss of life that Barbaro did and Secretariat before him, and countless others in between.

So, please let’s make July’s Triple Crown Challenge geared toward these brothers ... If you can, donate $29, $58 or $87 in honor of Barbaro, Nicanor and Baby Brother Dynaformer so that we can stamp out laminitis once and for all ... we can kick it and we can lick it ... so please "LET’S LICK LAMINITIS" today ...for ALL THE HORSES WHO GIVE US SO MUCH PLEASURE ON AND OFF THE RACETRACK!! PLEASE GIVE WHAT YOU CAN TODAY, JULY 29TH ...

Anyone???? Does anyone know, is there a fund being established to help Mr. Garcia, Lava Man's Groom who was so badly injured a week ago???

    Lynne-Barbaro's Forever Friend in CA

Posted by: Lynne Brown at July 29, 2007 5:21 PM

Just sent in my $50 to NBC Laminitis Fund in honor of Cowboy and Nick...
Our beauties who were lost because the odds were just too great...how so many fought for these two horses...what love they took with them to heaven.

    I think Barbaro would approve

Posted by: jonnagrey at July 29, 2007 5:43 PM

FYI: How can it be possible that SIX months have passed since we heard those fateful words out of NBC through Alex.

Births, deaths, Alex's impending adventures. Cavel is closed, Cavel is opened: how many times did THAT happen in the last six months. We must hit the phones heavy tomorrow. It must be stopped...

The DelPark gathering, the birth of the last of B's blood brothers...the coming of another...dear god please make it a filly. Movies, documentaries,
dances, poetry, friendships--so many very human things...

AI: the Spielberg movie is on: the last 20 minutes, when the aliens bring back David's mother because of the lock of hair Teddy had sewn into his furry belly...it is so poignant, so sad, so perfect.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have even one day of Barbaro back? So sweet, so impossible. How many times have the Jacksons dreamt of such a miracle...ah well, weepy now, no wonder the migraine has come to perch in my head...

Love to all. Honor Barbaro's memory in all you do and say. Courage, strength, affection, beauty, power, attitude...how many hearts were broken on that day 6 months ago.

So on we march. And will keep step over the years to bring an end to laminitis, dangerous tracks, a better life for people who live in the backstretch.

And above all else. An end to horse slaughter. On a day when honor should be given to God, people at Cavel are probably slaughtering our beautiful, trusting horses, ponies, foals, drafts, minis, mules, burros...there are too many to name.

So tomorrow. Please remember Barbaro and do whatever you can in his name to destroy horse slaughter in this country, and keep it from Canada and Mexico.

Sorry to be so emotional. It's going to be one of those weeks, I fear...Love to all you wonderful FoBs. Remember how much we have done, how many we have saved, how much money raised for research into the causes/cure of laminitis...we are so strong.

I am so grateful for what the big, bay colt brought into my life: the good and the awful. But I miss him too: I think of him, and I see the Livingstone portrait of him, his head turned towards Barbara L.--having just been bathed, ethereal clouds of steam around his noble head and powerful neck.

That's our guy....He should be at Saratoga. Celebrated, exhaulted, appaluded.

How sure I was that I would see him one day, lay my hand on his silken neck and face; look into those eyes......

    Hay, FOB's!

    ###
Just got home from a birthday lunch with my son and daughter-in-law. One of the things I received was a card that just tore me up with the loving emotion of it. I am so blessed to have them in my life.

I know today is the 6-month mark of Barbaro's euthanization. I thought I was going to be OK - but I am very emotional - have been for the last couple of days. But I have also felt Barbaro's presence very strongly - very loving, very positive and I thank Spirit for that gift. It was very unexpected.

    ###
I did make it to Fair Hill, but the storm was coming in fast so I didn't stay long. Got to finally meet Mass Romantic and take a look at Red Aspen resting up after yesterday. I drove home during the peak of the thunderstorm - at one point, the lightning looked like it was surrounding my car.

Take care, everybody. You are the greatest.

    Healing, Love, Peace,

    Good afternoon, famblee!

Sweet Velvet Nose, missing you. Always. I try not to think of what might have been, but it always sneaks up anyway.

The last six months have sped by with breathtaking speed. My own life has changed so drastically, (and thankfully, finally, for the better now) but I will never forget those last days. The fear, the dread, the innate knowing but hoping for one more miracle....the pain and overwhelming anguish when the news broke. Then, eight days later, my Felix joined you.

Now we are all working for your legacy, to finish what you started. Alex is leaving/has left Fair Hill and is now a roving ambassador for your legacy.

Daily life takes its due, other committments must also be met, we all march onward and forward, but you are never forgotten, never, and never will be forgotten.

..from Chapters 16 & 17, posted yesterday, on the DB BARBARO thread:

He stepped onto a surface of sparkling sand. It was like fine-grained diamonds, and soft beneath his feet. All around him were glistening rocks that seemed to grow out of the ground. They pushed up from crystal caverns below the surface, reaching for the light. The rocks were faceted pillars, tall as trees, of a smooth, high polish. A rainbow of colors swirled around inside of them, and should a color escape its gleaming core, it flashed, bright white, then leaped into the air, leaving a twinkling trail of its own sparkling hue behind. It was from these colorful trails that the flute-like tones came. They were soft little sighs of light, trying to find a voice to express the joy of flight.

"ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE...." posted in memory of our Dear Boy. Created and offered to bring peace and healing at his loss.

They are only a thought away.

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, I have been contemplating how simultaneously far away & close six (6) months can feel. And I've been thinking of the Big Bay One, our sweet prince Barbaro "Bobbey" Jackson throughout this weekend. Otherlyn's saga is so appropriate. This majestic horse stepped into a pool of light and continues to send forth ripples of hope and beauty. Much love to each of you and to all who cared for this fabulous being prior to and following 05/20/2006. Peace, RMH

    #### To Kathryn, yes, I wish I could be with you, traversing the French Quarter. I wonder if the "Fleur de Paris" clothing shop (which had the most splendid chapeaux I've ever seen outside of Churchill Downs) is still open, on the street in back of the Cathedral of Saint Louis. It was across the street diagonally from the "Blue Dog" gallery. gallery. Lisa, had you ever been there? ####

Sad to report that LYRICAL SOUND,a filly by DISTANT MUSIC, went down in the 1st race at Del Mar. She did not survive. Russel Baze was injured. They will report more, later. So sad.

Please Lord, keep the rest of them safe.

Posted by: Otherlyn at July 30, 2007 12:07 AM

I did npot see the two Arlington horses go down. I DID see one, named BLUE SAILOR get hung up in the gate. He was subsequently scratched. No report on him either. !!:(

Posted by: Otherlyn at July 30, 2007 12:10 AM

OY - I came on for a few minutes before leaving for music, and learn there were two down at Arlington and one at Del Mar, and Russell Baze is injured - OY OY OY. If I weren't such a cock-eyed optimist I would be in despair along with the tears.

Just remember they go down off the track as well - I personally had two with broken legs, one in the stall (!) and one in pasture; and remember St. Liam did himself in, in a paddock fall, as I recall. I just wanted to say this to hopefully forestall any negative thoughts/comments aimed at the industry. S__t happens. Period.

Poor babies - my quivering heart goes out to them and their connections. Wish I believed in your Rainbow Bridge . . . but that's not how I'm drawn.

And now I must go and spread cheer and anti HS info amongst the throngs . . .

Alex, proceed on your Mission - and all of our spirits are with you. You are indeed, as I think it was Susan E said, Barbaro's ambassador carrying out his legacy.

Praise the Lord and Pass the Carrots! (thank you, Lillian Petroff)

This was posted one here year ago today - it was written my Melissa Harden.

I love you forever horse - you have my heart always.

    "Barbaro" by
    Melissa Harden

    Who wouldn't be charmed?
    By the most precious sight
    Of a foal being born
    After a long restless night

    Eyes anxiously watch
As he climbs to his feet
    Nuzzling so close
    To his mother's heartbeat

    We think of his dam
    We think of his sire
Will he have her quiet calm?
    While retaining his fire?

    Those answers are known
Only to God it is said
So we leave it to Him
As we go to our beds.

    We watch foals play games
    While amidst their peers
    Whether they'll race
    Is best left to seers.

    Then the time comes
    That all mother's hate
    He must leave her side
To be schooled at the gate

    What's with this saddle?
    Who's this on my back?
    You mean I must run
    Out here on this track.

    He continues to strengthen
    His endurance increases
    Through most careful workouts
    And frustrating breezes

    He could be the one
    If our watches don't lie
Shall we aim for the Derby?
    And give it a try

    He wins all his races
    He fills us with pride
    This is a great horse
    With luck on his side

    He then wins the Derby
    They are calling him great
    He goes to the Preakness
    And meets a cruel fate?

    In the midst of adversity
    He touches our hearts
    We see his ability
    To be patient and smart

    We admire his quiet courage
    As he endeavors to heal
    Each day we're encouraged
    By his very strong will

    There was no Triple Crown
    No jubilant mood
    But his name will resound
    When we think fortitude

    For no claim of greatness
    Ever had such a measure
    As his grace under stress
    More precious than treasure

    And his name, Barbaro
For all those who know him
    Will always mean hero
    His fame never to dim.

In your honor Barbaro, your miracles never cease.
    ***********************************************

    AN EXTRAORDINARY INVITATION

A simple flock of birds in flight.
Filling the skyline as far as eye can see.
Moving as if one, one breathe, one thought, one goal.
Held together by an invisible ancient bond.
An indefinable connection, beckoning, bidding them onward
    To a nameless destiny.

We were like those birds in many ways,
A faceless nation called, connected, mid misstep the 20th of May 2006
“The Barbaro Nation”, summoned by Barbaro
Each person clearly called by name, to come, to become
More than we could ever dream,
    What an extraordinary invitation.

The Barbaro Nation moved as if one,
We filled the skyline, then the heavens with prayers.
Prayers rising from every corner of the earth,
    Collective prayers, tears, healing thoughts,
Rising from many countries, religions, and ethnicities,
All for a horse, a very special horse named Barbaro.
We moved in unison; magically held together by his invisible call.
We moved to the right, to the left, rising quickly to meet each need,
    Swooping upward, then quickly downward,
    Bodies and minds positioned
To fight for his life, for his wholeness.
We were part of one another
    In ways that defies explanation,
    We who called ourselves FOB’s.

Each morning we stumbled from our beds,
    Skipping the bathroom, coffee, tea
Logging on as quickly as our fingers would allow.
    Our first order of business,
    To see if he survived the night;
Longing to read the words, “ACN.”

We devoured each new medical update, every morsel of information.
We wrote stories, poems; poured out our hearts, cried rivers of tears.
We cheered with good news and bore the weight of bad news.
We dug our souls and feet in,
Each of us holding fast to the vision of his healing, his wholeness.
We all sent our love in the form of healing treatments, emails, letters, cards,
Pictures, spearmints, carrots, pears, ginger snaps, flowers, stuffed animals,
Religious medals, Holy Water and so many more un-named love gifts.
We hung banners; sent cards and made calls to people we did not know.
We were a large, powerful Nation
    Tens of thousands strong,
    All pulling for Barbaro.
Our collective efforts, prayers, healing energies and thoughts
Looked as if they just might win his fight for life,
Until that awful day in January.

Months later a large hole remains in our hearts,
For this horse we never knew.
We ask the empty skyline “Why”.
    The question when first spoken,
Echo’s loudly up into the Heavens,
    Then slowly the words disappear
    Into the abyss of silence.

Heaven will continue its silence on this matter
For Heaven does not hold our answers.
People, hold the answers to the “Why” questions.
For there is a truth to be spoken
A truth each faceless FOB needs to hear
A truth that will release us from his haunting death.

Of all the voices our hearts have heard
    One voice quietly whispers,
    This miracle, Barbaro’s miracle
Brought with your collective prayers, was not for not.
    While your prayers were quashed.
When science was awarded all the glory.
    There will be other miracles
    Because of this horse,
This very special horse named Barbaro.

Patiently the FOBs wait for this truth to be spoken
    For the moment when all
Those glorious prayers are given their due.
As we wait, we content our selves with
Lobbing to end Horse Slaughter, Horse Rescue,
    And Racetrack Safety,
    And more miracles,
All because of this horse, we never knew.

All of us called by name, to come, to become
His faceless frens that day in May
    We carry his torch
    And wait for our release
From this feeling of being cheated of our prize
    Barbaro’s miracle,
    His well-earned freedom.

Michael Baze, who led all riders at Hollywood Park and is atop the current Del Mar standings, was thrown in the first race at Del Mar Sunday when his mount, Lyrical Sound, broke down in the stretch of the 1 1/16-mile turf race. Baze was taken to nearby Scripps Hospital in La Jolla for precautionary X-rays of his upper left leg.

He missed mounts in the next five races but when X-rays proved negative, Baze was released. He planned to return for his mounts in the seventh, eighth, and ninth races.

Two horses had to be vanned off after the race for $50,000 claimers. Brice Blanc pulled up Mohawk on the first turn, the 7-year-old mare suffering a possible condylar fracture in her left foreleg that was reportedly not life-threatening. Lyrical Sound fractured her left foreleg approaching the wire and finished fifth. Baze was trying to pull her up and was thrown. The 4-year-old filly had to be euthanized.

Baze was expected to honor his riding commitment on Battle Won, one of the favorites in the $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap (gr. I).

Through Saturday, the 10th day of the meeting, the 20-year-old Baze had 15 winners to lead second-place Victor Espinoza, who had 10.

Del Mar debuted its synthetic surface, Polytrack, at this summers meeting to positive reviews. Horsemen have praised the new main track as safe for horses. However, Lyrical Sound was the second fatality of the meeting on the turf course. Mayor Bozarth broke down in the third division of the July 18 Oceanside Stakes and had to be euthanized after suffering a condylar fracture of his left rear pastern.

Get well wishes to the infamous Dr Scott Morrison DVM of Rood and Riddle fame who recently underwent an emergency operation on his appendix......

I'm sure many of you will remember him as the hoof specialist Dr R consulted for Barbaro????

    SIX MONTHS???
It's a blink of an eye, it's a heartbeat...it's also unbearable and forever and eternity. I am so very thankful for the FOB who coined the phrase ALWAYS COMFORTABLE NOW - it has brought some small measure of comfort. And I also wish to thank the author of EQUINE HEAVEN for a vision of joy, for lighthearted celebration, and hopefulness for an eventual reunion with our beloved equine angels and other furkids.

Beloved Barbaro, big bay colt and Big Boss Horse of forever...I celebrate your life, I mourn your death, I support all who attempt to fulfill your legacy. I await with joy the day I finally get to kiss your velvet nose. Until that time, you will always remain BARBARO - CHAMPION OF MY HEART!
    Love,
    Nancy

Thank you Maribel and MJ for your kind words. It was a labor of love for Barbaro. I wanted it to be just perfect so it took me several months to write it. I would write and then reworked it hoping to capture what my heart heard.
As for reposting it tomorrow, I have to be at a meeting very early in the morning and will have no internet access, so please feel free to copy and paste on the board for Mondays FOBs.

    ***MJ,
The Frozen Tundra is my nickname for the colder regions of the Midwest ;) Right now, however, it is very toasty...

Today I re-visited the grave of a friend of mine who died at 16. I found it when Barbaro died because his death reminded me of the pain of her loss, and I needed to find her as much as I needed to say goodbye to him. I left a flower and a blue, green and white balloon today- to me, it's become Barbaro's grave as well as hers. She was a generous person, so I think she would accept her place being "shared" once in a while.

Two souls lost way too soon- it makes you wonder. But he's with me, all of us. I have a song that comes on whenever I'm missing him- it came on on the way to the cemetary. "Goodbye Again."
"I'm sorry to be leaving you
    Goodbye Again
I long to kiss the tears away and give you back your smile
But other voices beckon me and for a little while
    Its Goodbye again"
For a little while... It's Goodbye Again.

It is good to see the original (and hauntingly lovely) poetry and Otherlyn's epic posted here today, on the 6th month 29th day. Last year the muses spoke, the creative juices flowed freely, and we saw a lot of artistic artwork as Barbaro continued his fight, continued to triumph. It is so fitting to see such tributes today.

Happy, happy birthday to my fren Lyn Gilbert, and to all others who have had birthdays this past week.

No Thank You can ever be enough for sharing Sweet Barbaro´s Journey with us. You and Barbaro will be Forever in my Heart.

Dear FOB Family, family and health concerns have kept me away for some time, but in my heart and memory I will always carry All of You, who always keep me in awe of your many talents, divine poets, gifted writers, gentle souls, pure hearts, fierce devotion.
