Barbaro Updates: 347

updates are now here.

Update 2250: Godolphin won its second Group 1 race this year in the Sussex Stakes at Glorous Goodwood: Ramonti Claims Group I Double in Sussex Stakes. They followed that up with a nice Group 2 2yo winner: Rio de La Plata Rolls to Vintage Victory.

Update 2249: Victor Molina was by the barn this morning, bringing donuts. Red Aspen's left eye continues to progress. Quick Quest, who showed early speed and then faded and was a little fractious in the paddock, seems to have come out of his race yesterday in good order. Real Lace galloped nicely this morning, Amanda rode Luke and escorted the girls (Kitty and the Two Punch 2yo filly) to the gate. Amanda is now heading back to Scotland. All in all a decent morning at the barn.

Update 2248: Steve Haskin goes down memory lane: Steve Haskin's Saratoga Memories: The Doc and the Storm.

Rags to Riches arrived at Saratoga yesterday along with her barn mate Octave: Rags to Riches Heads To Saratoga, excerpt:

We will miss her here but hopefully she will return to us next month after Saratoga's racemeet ends. She definitely left her mark here, as she bit me leaving a large bruise on my leg this morning while she was on the track. She had to make sure we knew who was in charge one last time before she shipped out!

Update 2247: Its Glorious Goodwood and Asiatic Boy, who was tremendous on the dirt in Dubai, switches back to turf in the Sussex Stakes: Asiatic Boy invades England in Sussex return.

Lawyer Ron's Whitney time, which appeared to quick to be accurate, is deemed accurate: Lawyer Ron's Whitney Time Deemed Accurate.

More wisdom from Chief Seattle..

When the last red man has become a myth among the white men, when your childrens children think them selves alone in the field, upon the highway or in the silence paths of the woods, they will not be alone.

In all the earth there is no place dedicated to solitude. At night when the streets ofyour cities are silent, and you think them deserted, they will throng with the returning hosts that once filled them and still love this beautiful land.

The wind that gave our grandfathers his first breath also receives his last sigh and the wind must also give our children the spirit of life.

Good morning to all,

In digging through a pile of quarters I found in my change purse I came across a couple of state quarters I had not seen before. One was Kansas with a depiction of a bison and Nevada with a heard of galloping horses. It is interesting how many of the quarters depict natural resources of a state including the local wildlife or domesticated animals. From what I can see, horses appear on the Wyoming (bronco rider), Kentucky (thoroughbred) and Nevada. Bison appear on the North Dakota and Wyoming quarters. How telling that we consider these images representative of who we are and what we hold precious and dear. Indeed they are icons worthy of our reverence. I was unsure as to whether or not bison/buffalo meat is consumed in the U.S. for I am quite sure I recently saw it for sale at my local Stop & Shop here in Connecticut, so I did a quick on-line search where I found the following quote which I thought I would share with you:

What is man without the bison? If all the beasts were gone, men would die from great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man.

—Chief Seattle, 1855

Have a great day everyone.

Good Morning FOB's

Strategy for Wednesday August 1

We know many of you were watching C-Span on Tuesday and were disappointed to see things moving so slowly. Hopefully the rest of the week will be more productive! As most of you know by now, an amendment is being added to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill that will change the original language. This is called the Spratt-Whitfield-Rahall-Chandler Amendment. Instead of posting lists today, we are asking you to call all representatives and tell them we urgently need their support to pass the Spratt-Whitfield-Rahall-Chandler Amendment that will put an end to horse slaughter for human consumption. Please call early since we don’t know if this will be brought to the floor tomorrow and we must flood their offices with calls for support until the vote takes place.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven that this the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

House Members and Senators will be working out of their District Offices from August 6 to August 31. Now is the time to call for an appointment and meet with them in person. There is no more effective way to get your message out than a face to face meeting. You have the best chance of meeting directly with them during this month. However, if that is not possible, please arrange a meeting with their District Manager. Some of you may want to form groups for these meetings. It is usually easier to get appointments to meet with your legislators in groups of 3 or 4 constituents.

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do and have a great day!

Shelley and Debra

I apologize for the long post. But I believe this a great example of people that tried to do the right thing by their horses and ended up having their hearts broken.

This is from the Saddle Horse Report On-Line website and will be run in the August issue of Horse World to be distributed at Louisville at the World Championship Horse Show (Largest Saddlebred Show in the nation)

Taken For A Ride
Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Our family has been in the Saddlebred industry for 24 years. We truly love the breed and have all poured our hearts and souls into promoting the Saddlebred in order for more people to be able to enjoy these amazing animals. We have had many ups and downs in our journey, but what we just recently experienced has caused us pain beyond words and certainly constitutes our lowest low.

Our whole family does this for the love of the Saddlebred. Our goal has been to give our horses the kindest, best start possible and to see them go to good homes. We cannot say it has not been a huge struggle and effort to do this. We breed for show horses, but everyone knows that not all horses are meant for the show ring. In an effort to honor our horses, those who do not wish to be show horses we do not push to the extreme. Due to some physical limitations of two people in our family, we made the heartbreaking decision to cut back some of our horses. We wanted to find homes where they could be well cared for and loved for the horses who did not want to be show horses and some broodmares who were hard to get into foal, but who would make wonderful companions for people. We set out to find homes where our horses would lead happy, productive lives.

We were beyond thrilled when we found a gentleman who claimed he had people who could provide wonderful, loving homes where they would trail ride the horses. Two friends of ours had worked with this gentleman before in different capacities and had recommended him to us. We also thought it was a great way to spread the word about the versatility of Saddlebreds by giving them to good homes where they could see how smart and sensible they were. We gave the horses away with their papers so that their heritage would be preserved and the people who received the horses could call us with any questions about the horses and their breeding. We truly thought it was a win/win situation all the way around and that this situation would be a viable option for finding good homes for our horses that we were very saddened about having give up. We were wrong on every level and it ended up being a complete recipe for disaster.

The gentleman assured us our horses were going to good homes and there was no possible way they would be sent for slaughter. He told us elaborate stories of what great homes the horses went to, how much the people loved them and how great this was to promote Saddlebreds in our area. The new owners were just thrilled with their new horses and the horses with their new homes. We were ecstatic. We were all so happy with how this was working out. Then, right after the Syracuse International we received an email from Pat Johnson representing Saddlebred Rescue asking for information about some of our horses that had gone through the New Holland Sale. WHAT? None of our horses has ever gone through the New Holland Sale and we never planned on any of our horses ever going through that sale. But right there in print were the names of three of our horses that we were told were placed in amazing new homes. We were all feeling so many things at once: disbelief, shock, anger and sadness that we were blatantly lied to and now our horses? lives were in jeopardy. We found out that a two-year-old we had given to this man had somehow injured her neck and was in terrible condition. All of our horses were in perfect condition when they left our farm and we were in disbelief to hear what had happened to her.

To be honest, I do not know if we will ever know the truth of how this horrible situation transpired. When people can look you in the eye and lie to you I do not think you have a great chance of ever finding out the truth. All I know is our family has been devastated by this whole experience. We thought we were doing the right thing and it could not have been more wrong.

We have no answers for this situation. We truly wish we did. We have written this to raise awareness of how easily your beloved horses can end up in the wrong hands when you thought they were in the right hands.

Lord God open wide the hearts of these legislators. Awaken their souls, and let them hear and feel the spirit of the horse. Connect their spirits to our spirits, through the love of Barbaro and through our love of the horse - all of this achieved in a right and perfect way. Awaken their conscience Lord - enable these legislators to see and do the right thing for the horse - and let the outcome be for the highest good of all, and the end to horse slaughter.

Ah, C-Spam: They're droning on about 24 billion dollars for children's healthcare again...OK, OK. It's important. But the fact that this vital need is in the hands of these people who make us go out and buy duct tape to keep our brains from flying out our ears, or our heads from exploding scared the beejesususus out of me.

Jonna

We have to stick to House members today because there is a good posssibility this amendment will come up in the near future. We have to get them to support the Spratt-Whitfield-Rahall-Chandler Amendment which will stop horse slaughter.

I think today would be a good day for everyone to call representatives in ALL states once they have spoken to their own. We've been told to flood their phones with calls today for their support.

You can find links on the wiki to all reps and I would start with the ones who cosponsored HR503 last year.

Thanks

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2007 3:38 PM

ShelleyA - sounds like a great plan today. One question, and forgive me if this has been answered - Is this amendment now part of the Ag bill, and is there a chance it will be voted on today? Also, is the amendment voted on apart from the bill? Sorry to be so out of the loop - time constraints, and I haven't been able to follow along regarding this amendment.

Love, Light and Protection for All of The Horses

Posted by: Mary S at August 1, 2007 3:39 PM

Mary S

This amendment should be introduced on the House floor as part of the Ag Bill. Once that happens, it will be voted on. It could happen as early as today but we don't know.

Keep in mind, things change very quickly and we'll keep you posted if there is any change.

It's frustrating -- yes. But you know what? It just gives us MORE TIME TO CALL! Please keep the phones on fire. Let's make sure they are shocked at how many calls they are getting to support the Spratt-Whitfield-Rahall-Chandler Amendment. Let's WOW them all. Let them know this issue is IMPORTANT and cannot be ignored. Guys, this may be our best chance this year to get this passed in the House. HR 503 is in very unfriendly committees, and there are people who will do anything to make sure it never gets to the floor for a vote. We have this ONE chance to get this to the floor -- let's make sure we don't lose this opportunity. I'm calling as much and as often as I can. I am hearing from the aides they are getting calls -- so you're doing a GREAT JOB! Just keep it up, folks. We can win the day. Remember -- for Barbaro. Remember, WE GET IT!

##Hi Elizabeth - I'm in Texas too.....
My opinion - but I don't think there are any silent ones here - some of us just sing louder than others - but we are all singing!

##Beth - I have the same feeling - best chance. Let's get it done.

Hold a vision of them voting, and the outcome is the end of horse slaughter forever. Imagine how that would feel.... Remember how we felt September 7th last year? I believe there is great power in the collective consciousness - and so power on this board - but the specifics are very important. Let's get this done!! The end of horse slaughter.

****jonna, re: your scary medical procedure on Friday... I had an uncomfortable, not scary procedure this week, waiting results..

When you go Fri remember all us are with you holding your hand, remember how many times Barbaro had to go thru a scary medical procedure, how many times he woke up blindfolded in a recovery pool, how many months he had a port in his neck..he was brave , you must be just like him..

And if you falter, and hear a low nicker..well, that will just be Barbaro letting you know he understands and that he is right there for you to lean on.

STRAIGHT UP NOON REPOST

We have to stick to House members today because there is a good posssibility this amendment will come up in the near future. We have to get them to support the Spratt-Whitfield-Rahall-Chandler Amendment which will stop horse slaughter.

I think today would be a good day for everyone to call representatives in ALL states once they have spoken to their own. We've been told to flood their phones with calls today for their support.

You can find links on the wiki to all reps and I would start with the ones who cosponsored HR503 last year.

Thanks

I have made one round of 30 calls so far, working around work, so to speak, and will keep going. I, too, have been hearing, "Wow. Another call on the Gobbledygook-Whatchamacallit-Thingywhat-Doofus amendment! We're getting a lot of them." So...y'all must be doing a great job!

Off to call more...

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

OK: don't give up...just keep calling. You'll be amazed at how well the name SprattWhitfieldRahillCHandler will just ROLL OFF YOUR TONGUE after a couple hours of talking. BUT: as has been said, these kids KNOW what we're talking about, so that HAS to be a good sign? Right? Right?
OK I'm out of duct tape, so must run out to the store...maybe I should get it in a festive new color? Or should I stick with the All-American Silver? I just can't decide....

She was so surprised and appreciative to find out about the info being posted at our DB and got the TWR/AB info from me so she can join the DB and post at the thread including pics of the therapy horses.

The horses are now all living outside in the fields of the property (except one very old mare who was taken to a neighboring stable) and there is a search in progress to find new property to rent or on which to build.

Jonnagrey,

Just a little aside--- I don't know if I told you I have an amazing dog that is Husky/Greyhound. My daughter got him from a rescue place in Arizona as a puppy. He is now four yrs. and the smartest, sweetest dog you could know. He has Husky markings but a body much like a Greyhound, long legs, slightly rounded back, especially when running. He loves to play with toys, knows how to open the toy basket and sings like he's rehearsing for the opera.

Thanks for all you do for the horses,
Bonnie

Bonnie: yes, that rehearsal for high opera is called "rooing." And is beloved by GH owners everywhere.

Many GH and husky crosses can be found up north as mushers seek to make their lines faster...IMHO, that would just be the silliest thing I have ever witnessed: think of all the playing that would take place.

If you go on Google, you can probably find a personal website that will give you a sound file of greys rooing...it's hilarious to watch the effect this has on your own doggie...

best: j

I have two Irish lurchers--terrierXgreyhound--and they're "designed" to work more effectively in the brush for their evil (I mean it) owners, the gypsies...One of these is very GH, the other, very terrier...and routinely brings in voles, mice and squirrels...boy, is she FAST.

Thanks for the note and good luck with your cutie.

Joan, I know I'm not Christian, but I believe polls indicate that around 80% of people want slaughter to end.

I have looked at some of the "horse" publication polls, too. To include the horse community, I usually use the figure 66-82% representing ALL Americans. I believe that is a little more realistic.

Anybody else?

Trainer to Get Hearing In Horse-Abuse Case

Published: October 22, 1981
David Jacobson, the trainer accused by racing authorities last week of having mistreated a thoroughbred in his stable at Aqueduct, was arrested yesterday on charges of violating an animal-protection law.

He appeared voluntarily at the 112th Precinct station house in Forest Hills, Queens, the neighborhood in which he lives, after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had filed the criminal charges against him.

The society says he failed to provide adequate sustenance and medical care to Hugable Tom, a gelding who was destroyed Sept. 26.

A hearing was set for Nov. 16 in Queens Criminal Court, and Jacobson was released on his own recognizance. The violation is a misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum of six months' imprisonment or a $500 fine, or both.

This from the TB horse Petigree Query

Euthanized due to laminitis September 28, 1981. His last trainer, David Jacobson, had his training license revoked shortly thereafter due to the failure to take adequate and reasonable care of the horse.

Unfortunately, buffalo is eaten in this country. I went on vacation to Yellowstone Park and to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming and remember seeing buffalo burgers and buffalo steaks on some of the menus there. I know they make "beefalo steaks," which is a cross between a buffalo and a cow. It's wrong just like HS is, in my opinion.

Information on polls, from the book "After the Finish Line":

According to Equine Advocates, 93 percent of callers in a 1995 national call-in television poll demanded the killing of horses for meat be banned. A 1997 poll in California showed 88 percent of California residents opposed horse slaughter.

In 1999, a study by the New York State Senate showed that 91 percent of respondents considered horses companions, recreational, or sporting animals. 86 percent opposed the practice of slaughter; 73 percent believed that the manner horses are slaughtered is cruel and inhumane. 72 percent would never eat horsemeat.

More recently, a 2003 poll done by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington D.C. revealed that 89 percent of Texas voters (yes, that's "horse country" for sure) were unaware that horses were being slaughtered in their own state for human consumption overseas. Seventy-two percent said they were opposed to the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

A May 18-20, 2004 poll by The Responsible Animal Care Society showed that 64 percent of Canadians did not believe horses should be slaughtered for human consumption.

The return of horseman
Barbaro's sad tale lures Jacobson back to training

By MATT GRAVES, Special to the Times Union
First published: Wednesday, August 1, 2007

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The sad saga of Barbaro has had far-reaching effects throughout the racing industry, and it may have played a significant role in one trainer's return after a 25-year absence.

David Jacobson, a highly successful conditioner in New York in the early 1980s, was forced to relinquish his license by the state after being charged with "failing to provide adequate food and medical attention" to a horse in his care named Hugable Tom in 1982.

Jacobson informed officials that Hugable Tom was mortally ill with laminitis, the degenerative disease that ultimately brought Barbaro's courageous battle for survival to an end after his Preakness breakdown. Hugable Tom had been scheduled to be euthanized shortly after officials raided Jacobson's barn. The incident left Jacobson with a bitter taste in his mouth.

"I had no contact or interest in racing for 25 years," said Jacobson, now 52. "But the one thing that did catch my eye was Barbaro. It was very similar to what happened to the horse that I had. We tried to save him, but he had laminitis. Hours before we put him down, the ASPCA and everybody showed up and said I was being cruel to this horse. Laminitis kicks in very quickly, and that's exactly what happened to Barbaro. Those guys were heroes for trying to save him. For me, it was terminal."

There were rumors that the incident was politically motivated, possibly an offshoot of the 1980 murder conviction of Jacobson's father, Buddy, who was one of America's top trainers before the high-profile love-triangle case that resulted in the death of a New York City bar owner and ended his career. Buddy Jacobson died in prison in 1989, less than nine years after the longest trial in Brooklyn County history.

Through the encouragement of 92-year-old owner Michael Ricatto and inspired by the Barbaro story, Jacobson decided to return to his first love and got his wish when the state reinstated his trainer's license a few weeks ago.

"Mr. Ricatto, who I trained for back in the day, has been after me for a very long time to get back into racing," said Jacobson, who has built a successful downstate real estate business over the past quarter century. "He just asked me if we could get a horse and just get one more picture. I told him if we go back I don't want to go back with one or two horses. He said, 'Let's go for it.' "

It didn't take long for the reunion to bear fruit. Jacobson won on opening day at Saratoga with a 16-1 shot named Again and Again in the sixth race. He needed that emotional lift after claiming Massoud in the meet's first race for $35,000. Massoud broke down and had to be euthanized, leaving Jacobson with the ultimate claiming nightmare. Things have been much better since.

Racing under the name of Ricatto's son, Michael Jr. (his business partner and best friend), Jacobson has saddled five horses at the meet and hit the board with three of them. He's currently training a string of 25 who were racing for trainer Diane Balsamo while Jacobson was operating under an assistant's license from May to July.

"The state felt it was appropriate to give me an assistant's license since it had been 25 years since I trained a horse," Jacobson said. "They just wanted to make sure I still knew how to do it. They felt it could take anywhere from six months to a year to maybe even two years that I'd have to work as an assistant."

Jacobson got an early reprieve from the state and was reinstated fully in July.

"It was nice to run my first race on opening day at Saratoga," he said. "They've been really great -- the state, the stewards and everybody's been so helpful to give me this opportunity, and I really appreciate it."

A lot of veteran tracksiders must have been staring at the sky when they realized the name above Again and Again's in the program was a trainer they hadn't heard of for more than two decades. The thrill wasn't lost on Jacobson.

"Winning a race on opening day at Saratoga is incredible," Jacobson said. "It doesn't beat winning the Derby, but it's close."

Debbie LA,
The horse.com recently did some VERY biased polls, but they backfired, IMO. They turned out to be more ANTI slaughter, as I recall. After getting a bunch of responses from us, and others, I think they quit doing the polls.

Goodnight Barbaro

Watch for your star, and hope you and your frens in heaven have a lovely evening. We are marching on, Barbaro, and you are leading us the way, we thank you and love you!

Goodnight Family/Fans of Barbaro

It has been a long day, and all of us on pins and needles waiting for that moment when we can get the Barbaro Bill, the anti-horse slaughter bill passed. I am praying constantly for this miracle...along with all of you.

Please call, fax, email. Please remember the Fallen Angels, the rescues, the ones suffering, human and animal and each other.

Have a lovely evening.

Debbie L.A. - glad it turned out as it did, because I really wanted to get his story out there. Thanks for catching that the URL I posted was not working. I corrected at the DB as well. (There are 2 DB threads on this, one under "Horse Racing" and one under "Barbaro."

I'm glad you brought it up, because it explains what really was behind his original loss of license. He himself saw his own situation when he learned about Barbaro, and that's really what brought him back. Looks like it's a real asset to the industry that he IS back. (Did you notice it was he who had claimed poor Massoud in that ill-fated claiming race?)

I'm glad to have come across this piece because it really is a great horse story . . .

Are you back yet?? Did it hurt much, I hope
not! Sometimes stitches come out so easily there
is just a little pull- hope it was like that for
you.

I have prayed so hard today, for our horses and
our Representatives to do the right thing and
PASS our amendment!

## Jonna, I'm keeping you and the procedure in my
prayers daily. You know we are all with you.

It always seems in the polls that about up to 20-25 % of Americans favor slaughter. For different reasons but favor they do.
Just think, that's about 75% against.
If a politician received 75% in a vote, it would
be a historic landslide- yet we can't get them to move on the HS vote. That shows us the power of
money and , indifference I guess.
Sorry to sound jaded but I just get tired of it ! !
Just think of it as our HORSES receiving a
landslide vote, yet a small minority keep killing
them and making it legal. Doesn't it make you want to tear your hair out? ? ? ?

Lord God open wide the hearts of these legislators. Awaken their souls, and let them hear and feel the spirit of the horse. Connect their spirits to our spirits, through the love of Barbaro and through our love of the horse - all of this achieved in a right and perfect way. Awaken their conscience Lord - enable these legislators to see and do the right thing for the horse - and let the outcome be for the highest good of all, and the end to horse slaughter.

Hi FOB's....

Barbaro's legacy is reaching far and wide. I received the following letter (edited) from my Assemblyman, Harvey Weisenberg(NY):

"I have received your correspondence regarding the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

"I am pleased to advise you that I have joined Assemblywoman Glick in sponsoring Assembly bill A. 2572 which addresses this issue. As an advocate for the humane treatment of animals, please be assured that you have my strong advocacy, vocal support, and affirmative vote should this bill come before the entire Assembly... At the present time, the bill is being reviewed by the Assembly's Agriculture Committee...

"Thank you for taking the time to write to me about such an important issue..."

We love our sweet Barbaro and all horses so much, and will fight to the end for them. I also have a cool bumper sticker from HSUS on my car... I have never before put any bumper sticker, sign or decal on my car...this is a first for me...

The Court has indeed expedited the appeals process on the Cavel case.

Briefs from Cavel are due on August 4th, briefs by the defendants are due on August 8th, and the hearing on the merits is scheduled for August 16th. We are hopeful that the Court will rule quickly following the trial on the 16th. Considering the Court's expedited schedule we feel confident that the final ruling will be expeditious as well.

Sacramento KCRA 3 has a newsperson who lived there for six years...she said the traffic at rush hour there is 10 times worse than in Sacramento....however, this did happen a little past 6P....but there seem to be MANY autos/trucks/buses involved....WHAT on earth would make the span collapse like that, I wonder. A person who had been on the span said he felt 'tremors' like a jack-hammer and then it began collapsing!

Hi all,

I'm a "silent one" from Minneapolis; have posted here a few times; more on the DB and a few times in chat. The news here is terrible; this is a bridge only a few miles from home and one we are on frequently. Both my husband and I had some very bad moments until we were able to be in touch with all family members. We have received calls from concerned friends all over the country tonight. Pray for all involved - our local news stations are now calling the efforts recovery not rescue; most estimates are that 30 to 50 cars were on the bridge when it collapsed as well as 20+ maintenance workers actually on the bridge. I am glad that, so far, all MN FOB's are accounted for and hope that Mary's niece is okay. Goodnight to all and thanks for all the concern.

PLEASE don't apologize. Your kind heart took flight and ran to help. I thank you.

Pamela,

Thank you so much for your kind post. I hope everyone knows me enough by now to be able to decipher between the "two of us".

Thank you Pamela.

Amazing that this excuse for a human being continues to target Laurie..........we all know by now that she can take whatever the a-hole has to dish out! (and good luck finding anyone to rattle on this board - you're up against a mighty bunch of pretty tough broads here in TWR Land, LOL.) You let 'em have it Laurie!!! No excuses necessary.

I just woke up - went to lie down for a short time, ended up sleeping for hours. I'm watching CNN right now in absolute horror and am adding my prayers and Reiki to all involved out there. I'm praying for the survivors, and for the families who are waiting for news of loved ones. I'm watching footage of rescue personnel in the water. I can't believe what I'm seeing. Am hearing that everybody on the school bus has been accounted for..I am thankful for that miracle.

LaurieH, we're watching your back...not to worry.
We know when YOU post.

Prayers...

God bless.
